GREETINGS Greetings Modesto Friends! Ahhh, the sights and sounds of summer. You think you have a few more months, then snap, it is over. But ModestoFriends, we can’t let summer off so easily. We need to make sure we squeeze every drop of summer out and enjoy every taste. We have ModStock and Xclamation Fest this month and friends from all over the region will come together here in Modesto. We had an awesome Graffiti Summer, we celebrated our 4th of July and soon, the kids will be hitting the books and kids will be going back to college. So what are we going to do with the next few weeks? Well, one thing you can do is help contribute to the One Purpose Scholarship program to raise money for CSU Stan students. I am a proud alumnus of CSU Stanislaus and we all need to rally around our local 4-year university. Students in our area are getting fantastic

educations, masters and doctoral degrees and we are educating the next generation of brightest and best. Friends, we need our college kids to come back and be the turbochargers of the next 50 years. We need new start-ups, new companies relocating and we need expansion from our existing companies. We need to reverse the brain drain and bring our kids back to a vibrant Modesto. I am so excited that my daughter Madison and her new husband Ryan Leupp have moved back to Modesto from Los Altos. We need more stories like this. We need a downtown that is welcoming to the young professional and other that makes the want to be here. Places like Commonwealth, Concetta, Boardroom, Tresetti’s and Raw are really creating some good vibes. We have a new Rockabilly barber on 10th St, Urbano on H and Jacob’s is opening on 12th St, not to mention our other fave places. X Fest will bring this all together on Aug 22 and this will be a party for everyone. We need you, our ModestoFriends to get out and explore our city. Have you been downtown to check out the new places that have opened? Did you go to Music in the Plaza on a Friday night? Have you been to a jam at the Barkin’ Dog our checked out a show on the patio at Minnie’s? There is so much going on that you need to check out. But we need more. We need to make our 10th St an epic promenade from the Doubletree to the Gallo Center. We need to spiff up J St from 9th all the way up to 5 points. What can you do? You can start by checking out the calendar of events at ModestoView.com and try something new a couple of times each week. The more people come downtown, the more people will want to open new businesses.

The more you tell your friends that things are happening, the more will get involved. Our friends at the city and the county need to step up and make it easy to open a new business, whether it is a legal firm or a new restaurant. We need cooperation and a can-do attitude that fosters new start-ups. We all have to work together. We need a Graffiti Museum, we need more nightlife, we need more galleries and boutiques for art and clothing as well as gifts and snacks. We need an aggressive Convention and Visitor Bureau that will be reaching out and attracting tourists and business to Modesto. The economy is bouncing back and we need to help Modesto bounce big! This is our call to action. This is the time to put our heads together and see what we need to do to attract other new business to area. We need to continue to make Modesto, THE destination of the central valley and welcome visitors from around the region and the world. We want people to shop locally for everything possible so we build our economy from the inside. Now is the time and Modesto is the place to live, work and raise a family. ModestoView is the place for you to learn about all that is going on. There is something for everyone to do. ModestoView is the best and most complete way to learn about our city and get the positive buzz for things happening. Modesto Needs More Cool Stuff by Ruben J. Porras Modesto needs more cool stuff. That may be a simple-minded statement but that’s how I feel. I think more cool stuff would make our little city more exciting, more approachable and more interesting. Imagine people flocking here to see and experience our cool stuff! It will be a renaissance in our history! Our very own cultural revolution! What we need need to think about is what cool stuff we want in Modesto. I have an idea that may seem wacky (but you have come to expect a certain amount of wacky from me over the years) so we will go with wacky as our “cool stuff Modesto needs” concept for the purposes of this article. impersonators and babies in casinos are cool and all but we could only take so much of that fun and excitement so we decided to take a walk. Just a few blocks down from the blinding glare and glitz of The Fremont Street Experience we came across what we thought might be a mirage in the desert. There are some weird things in Las Vegas but this was seriously weird. In the middle of the street a gigantic neon high heel shoe rotated endlessly and casted a glow onto a giant metal praying mantis. We learned later that every once in a while the long antennas on the rust and greencolored scary bug come to life and throw hot red and orange flames high into the air. I’m not saying that Modesto needs a giant flaming bug - although that would be pretty

cool - I’m saying we could use what the giant insect appeared to be guarding. Just beyond the bug was a series rectangular metal buildings stacked on top of one another like Legos to form a very artsy-looking park and shopping area. Upon closer inspection we realized that these metal buildings were actually repurposed shipping containers. After years of toting plastic spoons, funky party hats, shiny cars and dog toys back and forth from China and Hong Hong to US ports these particular containers had apparently been retired. Instead of dropping them off at a junkyard - like the time we left Aunt Edie at a random retirement home - someone decided they would make cool buildings out of them. Downtown Container Park in Las Vegas is home to an eclectic collection of galleries, restaurants, salons and shops with names like Crazy Legs, Indian Soul Art, The Perch and Blowout Dollhouse just to name a few. In the middle of Downtown Container Park is The Treehouse which is a massive play area that kids and adults are equally encouraged to use that includes a slide that is an impressive 33-feet long. In the shadow of The Treehouse is a stage where live performances occur often and an area where families picnic and watch movies under the stars during the spring and summer months. If a trip to Las Vegas is not in your immediate future, check out The Yard at Mission Rock in San Francisco. This is a smaller version of the Las Vegas Downtown Container Park concept that was put up very quickly and also features businesses residing in retired giant metal boxes. I’d bet there are businesses in Modesto that would donate metal containers and maybe someone could volunteer some unused land to place them on. Overall this would be an affordable project that could be built quickly and would infuse some cool into Modesto with or without a massive flaming bug. What do you think? LET THE GAMES BEGIN by Sam Pierstorff This is for the first letter learned—etched with a fist around a blunt pencil, circling the page like a tornado. His name is Oscar, and these are his Os, drawn like targets or springs bouncing across a page. And this is for Violet, her Vs like empty sugar cones, the arrow of her initial pointing down though her head is always up. This is for the first syllable of the first song on the first day of preschool. This is for the hug at the door—and for the first kid who cries when he arrives and when he leaves. This is for the child who is safe now—whose neighborhood walls are crumbling under the weight of poverty and divorce. This is for the kid who has felt a leather belt against his bottom, or an open hand across the same lips God made to smile. But this is not where the story ends. This is where it begins. This is for the sandbox where castles are first built— where boys become kings and girls do not wait for a prince to feel alive. This is for blue food coloring that turns water into oceans, and for glue that makes imagination stick to brown paper bags. Yolanda makes a puppet with curly black hair like her own. Kevin makes a wolf. All morning he howls. Today, pencils are sharpened for tracing the alphabet. Tomorrow, the Pulitzer Prize. Before the Sistine Chapel, there were finger-paints. Before ballet, the Hokey Pokey was what it was all about. So this is for the teachers who will lead marches across grass even in the rain and strum guitars, the room echoing with the voices of children who should never be told to shut-up. This is for the surrogate mothers and fathers of America— the teachers—who will play all day on bended knees so our kids can stand tall for the rest of their lives.

by Jim Christiansen The end of summer finds many of us still on vacation, while others working on the start of school activities, or just working through the heat. It’s not a complete hot bed of activity, and I have to admit, hard to work in my garage/studio without air conditioning. One thing I’ll miss are the air conditioned sessions for life drawing in the Upstairs Studio at the Chartreuse Muse. Jack Morris announced last month, the July 25 session to end the several run at the Muse, and the life drawing group will be looking for a new site. My last run of coffee for the Life Drawing group, took me to Preservation Coffee and Tea, where Martin Baker let me know of their art contest limited to 3 entries by end of July. All reviewed by public for a people’s choice result displayed in August. During July Art Walk, Dana Koster and Chelsea America presented Hypervelocity Star, an Art/Poetry show collaborative, with art, a reading of Dana’s poetry and artist questions and answers. Debra Barr works were on display at Barkin’ Dog Grill for July Art Walk with the Thursday jazz jam. Get your maps for August. I keep reading about all sorts of fun going on at Nicole Slater’s Artist Loft above Slater’s Furniture. Nicole has her studio up on the second floor, with various events, classes, and fun. Artist-Quilter Sue Siefkin, will be among artists on display with a piece in the Annual South Waterfront Art Exhibition in Portland, Oregon. Show opens August 7 and runs through August 22. This is juried show of living artists, and those in the South Waterfront Neighborhood. If in Portland, drop in. In Turlock, Carnegie Arts Center featuring a show by the Photo Collective, which will continue through August 9. Arts around Town, features all the Turlock Art galleries, and stops downtown the Second Saturday of the Month. Tickets still available for the Carnegie Gala opening the Alphonse Mucha show. Photography also on the agenda in August for Mistlin Gallery. The Invitational Photography Show will open August 18, and

Do we only have one more month of summer? So many of us all have to be working and doing the regular things when kids go back to school. Does that mean we will miss happy hour? Will we get creative? Ok, this is the easiest way to cruise some tasty rum. There is an easy way and a healthy way. Easy – Stop by any of your favorite 7/11s and pull down a nice big Slurpee. Cover and insert straw, take home or to a picnic. Healthy way – Stop by your favorite fruit smoothie place like Yogurt Mill and get a nice tall one. Pick a nice fruit flavor, we like the mango, pineapple blends. Cover, insert straw and take home. Once you have your place to enjoy, we recommend a nice dark rum. Remove the lid, slurp down some of your ice cold beverage (watch out for brain freeze) and then slowly stir in your favorite dark rum. Relax and enjoy. This is really basic and 100% foolproof. It was an unassuming Tuesday when I was pondering what the Chef Viewers might like to sample in the hot month of August. I asked my friends Colleen and Ron of Direct Appliance if they had a recommendation for amazing Thai food in Modesto; it seemed like a no-brainer when they both said Tasty Thai. I immediately headed over to check it out. What a wonderful surprise to walk through the door of the 2nd location on Floyd that opened back in 2007, it looks brand new! It smelled incredible at my first hungry whiff. Yep, I was about to Thai one on! Laureano Salva. Jr. is the general manager who is better known as “J” and who is involved in many areas of the restaurant. So naturally I wanted to begin my dining experience with refreshment. The cocktail menu was filled with numerous concoctions that I’ve never come across before. A lychee martini, x-rated cosmo, and a few drinkies that are made with homemade Hibiscus syrup! See recipe on this page. The Hibiscus Martini was a stellar choice for me looking to cool down from another temperature rising day. The lunch menu possess an impressive 23 selections to choose from and are all only $8 including steamed rice, salad, and eggroll! Now that’s a tasty outstanding deal! I learned that “pad” in Thai food means fried rice noodles and tasty Thai has many varieties to choose from including; Pad Kraprao, Pad Sweet & Sour, Pad Cashew Nuts, and so much more. Since everything is made to order Tasty Thai prides its dishes and is well known for accommodating its customers as the spicy level can be modified! Owner, Park Praneet, explained to me how on his menu there are 4 different kinds of curry; red, yellow, green, & panang. He provided me insight to a few differences in Chinese & Thai cooking. Thai food can be a lil’ more spicy, but easily adjusted to a milder taste, it’s less sweet, and I now know what I love about Thai food, it tends to have more garlic, mmmm so Dana~licious! Calling all songwriters of the Central Valley and beyond! Take a weekend to rest, write, and record at the third annual Yosemite Songwriting Retreat this October. Growing in popularity and now in our third year, the YSR recently announced a heavenly lineup for our 2015 weekend event on October 9-12. Grammy-nominated songwriter Eliza Gilkyson will be joined by internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter Joe Craven, central coast favorite Jayme Kelly Curtis, renowned luthier and musician Rick Turner, and several more instructors highly skilled in the art of facilitating fun, relaxation, inspiration and education. I’m over the moon about the quality of talent we’ve been able to attract to our little corner of the world in just three years. Our headliner, Eliza Gilkyson, is the winner of three Austin Music Awards and four Folk Alliance Music Awards. She is one of the most active songwriters on the Americana scene, with 20 albums to her credit. I’m equally thrilled that Joe Craven, a veteran of our first retreat two years ago, will be back for more musical hijinx. As a world class rhythm master and instrumentalist for whom most ordinary objects are fair game for making music, Joe brings a unique point of view to the craft of songwriting. Last year, we had the pleasure of having Modesto artist Francesca Bavaro attend the retreat, as the winner of the Modesto Unplugged Music Festival’s songwriting contest. A Mid-century Gem in Downtown Modesto

When you think about historic landmark buildings, what image comes to mind? For many, I imagine you are seeing a building with a symmetrical brick facade, carved stone, ornate detailing, maybe a rhythmic colonnade. We often think of historic buildings having these

classical forms as this has most often been the style in which our country has built its great public buildings. In fact this neo-classical style of architecture was still very prevalent during the 20th century. A local example is the beautifully restored former post office on the corner of 12th and I streets in downtown Modesto. Built in 1933, this is a historic landmark building that shares this “historic” look. However directly across the street is a different style of historic building, one that has likely remained unnoticed by many. Built just 6 years after the post office, Modesto’s Hall of Records building stands in stark contrast to its neo-classical neighbor. Designed by local architect Russell deLappe, the Hall of Records is an amazingly well preserved example of International Style architecture. Horizontal rows of glass slice through the rising unadorned concrete walls. Steps lead up to the open glass entrance while a concrete canopy cantilevers overhead.

Flanking the entry is the stair tower with its tall expanse of glass block stretching from the ground to the roof above. The building is void of ornament, allowing its carefully detailed proportions and form to shine through as a marvelous example of this mid-century modern style. As we have engrained in us this mental image of what a “historic” building should look like, buildings like the Hall of Records often get overlooked. As a result many great midcentury buildings have been demolished. It is important for us to understand, appreciate, and preserve these modernist structures as they truly are landmarks for our communities. There are plans in the coming years to build a new courthouse a few blocks away and vacate the Hall of Records and adjacent courthouse building. When this happens, I hope that our community understands the value of these buildings and steps up to preserve them. Just as we observed across the street at the post office, we can preserve our historic buildings while giving them a new purpose. So I hope the next time you are walking down I street, you can look up at the Hall of Records with a new appreciation and imagine the endless possibilities for its future use.

Meet Collin Smith

Editor’s note: Meet Collin Smith. At only 15 years-old he has traveled across the world to perform and has been trained by superstars in their field. You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone at any age that enjoys what they do as much as this kid does.

The ones that stand out and have had the most impact on my life are Ivan Moody, Chris Broderick, and Eddie Veliz, Tony Castaneda and Pepe Clarke from the band Kyng. I admire all of them because they have achieved success in this industry while staying true to themselves and their music. There are also a few local musicians that have supported and inspired me in this journey. They are the aforementioned Darin Morris, Mike Gonzales, Greg Knoll, Jerry DeLeon, Larry Lopez, Joe Braxton and Val Popovic. They are all really talented!

ModestoView: Hey Collin - The last time I talked to you you had just performed at The Other Place here in Modesto. It’s only been a few weeks but in that time you have really added to you rock resume. Tell me about your recent journey to Peru. Collin Smith: We went to Peru because X-Method (the band I am currently in) booked a show at the Nuclear Bar in Lima. After a conversation with Abby, the lead singer of the band, he learned one of my life goals was to play out of the country before I turn 16. This had also been one of his life long dreams so that conversation got him thinking and bam, the show was booked. We stayed in Peru for a week. One of the highlights was on the first night we arrived, the school across from the house we stayed at was practicing for a parade or festival. They were all dressed in traditional Peruvian outfits and the street was filled with dancing, music, happiness and pure culture. From the moment we got there, we were made to feel like family even with a language barrier. I can’t wait to go back! ModestoView: I understand that you play a couple of instruments. You seem to favor drums. Why is that? How long have you been into music? Can you see this being your future? CS: I do love playing drums, but it is hard to narrow down my favorite instrument. I have been into music for what feels like forever, but really started learning how to play when I was 10. I found Darin Morris and the VMI School of Rock then and I owe a lot to Darin for all of his encouragement and for teaching me how to play all different kinds of instruments. Even when I wouldn’t put my face to a microphone, he never gave up on me. He kept saying, “I want you to be able to taste the lunch of the last person who used it”. ModestoView: It seems like your mom is very supportive of your music. How does your family help you and inspire you? Are they ok with you making music your future?

ModestoView: What has been your favorite musical moment? Maybe it was a concert that you played or a concert that you watched? CS: One of my favorite musical moments was a show at Hero’s when my band warmed up for Midnight Ghost Train. The other mega moment was the show in Peru. To be able to play a show on another continent at 15 was more than amazing and I will never forget it! Other highlights are going backstage at Aftershock last year and attending the Golden Gods in LA. The Golden Gods was cool because it seemed that anyone who was anyone in metal was there. ModestoView: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? CS: In 10 years, I am going to be a rockstar. Period. That’s the dream, that’s the goal and I am going to work hard to get there.

CS: My parents are always supportive. My first thought is they buy me instruments and drive me to shows and wherever I need to go. Honestly they have always been 100-percent supportive of me and my music. I’m very lucky to have a lot of amazing friends and family that have stood by me and support everything I do. They are not only ok with music as my future, they encourage it. ModestoView: Let’s talk genres - You are currently performing with a metal band, right? What other types of music have you played? Is metal your favorite? It seems like an awful lot of strength and stamina plays into drumming

for a metal band. How often do you practice? CS: I have always played classic rock, hard rock and metal. My favorite is definitely metal! I practice drums everyday. I’m usually playing some sort of instrument or tapping on something! ModestoView: Is there a particular artist that inspires you? If so, who and why? Have you met any famous artists? CS: All artists inspire me. Everyone has something to bring to the table. My favorite drummer is Alex Rudinger. He is really fast and he breaks traditional boundaries. Very inspiring. I have met several famous artists.

Now, 16 years later, X fest is the Central Valley’s best summer party. Our friend Chris Ricci told us “I am most excited about the lineup this year. It’s strong and diverse. I am really proud to throw this show for the young adults in this city they deserve it.” You can go for the amazing line up of national and local bands, the awesome mix of DJ and house music or you can get your body dancing with some big time hiphop from Wacka Flacka Flame, Tech N9Ne, Tribal Seeds, party with the fantastic Dancetronauts, sing along with the amazing over the top Tubes headbang at the local metal stage, raise your glass with the Moonshine Bandits, celebrate local and tribute bands. New this year will be SKA stage so you can really get down. One of our favorite stages will be the Rockabilly Stage on J St. This is Modesto’s music. This is our history and it is some of the best swingin’ and dancin’ music in the whole place. You will dig it! This will be a cool space next to the Roller Derby and the Modesto Graffiti USA booth. There will be so many places to just dance the night away, eating and drinking and partying with your friends. X Fest has something for everyone and it is a fun night in the Central Valley. The stages are loaded with great line ups from 6 pm until 1:30 am. Also performing are: Andre Nickatina, Baeza, Chingo Bling, Moonshine Bandits, Los Rakas, Sadistik, Fortunate Youth & Nick G. Not only are there great bands, DJs, food and drink everywhere you look, there will even be Bushido wrestling fun and you can’t 20 feet without running into some you know and you will meet new friends all evening long. When it all began XFest was designed to be a great party, with fabulous entertainment and cool commmunity feel for a great price. Modesto View and Jennifer Allsup are bringing back Modesto’s roots to XCLAMATION Festival 2015 for the third year. ModestoView has been a champion for celebrating Modesto as the birthplace of Rockabilly music and we all need to spread the word. We are going to bring it to life at Xclamation Fest on Aug 22. This is a pure vintage real roots rock n roll stage. Located at J & 11th streets, downtown. The lineup this year has its diversity in the roots rock n roll persuasion. Let’s chat a little about each band that will be taking the Rockabilly stage. GREASEHOUND came together at the end of 2014. Playing the Rockin’ Christmas event in the 10th street plaza. Since then, Greasehound has been entertaining all around Modesto. For XCLAMATION Fest, Greasehound is stepping up their game and will be performing at 5-5:45. Front man Rikki Romero says “ Playing music helps escapes life’s struggle” Three on the Tree, recently signed with Hi-Ho Silver Records. They also, just announced they have made it through the auditions of “Valley’s Got Talent”. Now, in the top three of the band category. If, you don’t get a chance to see them at Valley’s Got Talent, then XCLAMATION fest is the place to be. Three on the Tree play at 6-6:45. Love Core front women Irene Machillo has now established a new crew of members. You might be familiar with Irene, she was the front lady for “House of Orange”. Now, throwing back those 50’s oldies. You can catch “Love Core” at 7-7:45. You’ll be dancing and singing along. Yes, Mr. “Kent Whitt and the Downbeats” will be taking the stage as well. Lifetime MAMA Award Winner Kent lead Modesto’s first Rock n Roll band...back in the day. So if you like to go down memory lane? They’ll be performing from 8-8:45. Switching up the mood with “ The Pendletons”, long time jamming Rockin’ psychobilly band. You also might know the front man Tony Trevino of “Trevino’s Barber “ shop, now located on 10th street next to “Cheroots”. In the past when “The Pendletons” have performed the streets were going crazy so don’t miss their set from 9-9:45. They have made a name for themselves in Modesto. Hailing from Columbia, Missouri. the “Hooten Hallers” will be taking the stage at 10-10:45. This three piece band has a musical talent that is rare to come by. John Randall playing the guitar, Andy Rehm plays a three piece drum standing up, with high pitch vocals following John’s lead. Of the very talented Kelly Everett on baritone sax. If have not got a chance to catch the “Hooten Hallers” in Modesto, then this is the time. You’ll be blown away on their talents. A bit of Country,Americana and Graveyard Blues. You get “Hellbound Hayride”! These fellas are base out of Santa Ana and Dana Point Ca. This Is what gets the adrenaline pumping. A bit of twangy country with some rhythm and blues. “ Hellbound Hayride” performs at 11-11:45. Just remember bring your higher heeled sneakers, because you’ll be going out tonight ! I really can’t believe how quick this year has flown by. So many good times are already behind us, and we are just half way through. This is year two of my involvement behind the scenes with Modesto Area Music Awards and so far things are looking great; adding a new category (Latin) and changing a few other things to make this year even better. Voting is set to go live on August 15th with the Awards Ceremony on October 20th at the State Theater. Thanks to everyone who came out to see Broken Toys at my first ever show at the Gallo Center. Hello everyone, I hope you are enjoying your summer. It been one for the books, I gotta say. The weather has been like a yo-yo. One the upside there is so much going on this summer that it’s hard to pay much attention to it. I am going to try and give you an overview of what a lot of different folks are doing in the area this month. Please understand that new shows are always being added and so you should always check artist’s websites to see all their dates. Our Blues brother Jeramy Norris is busy all over central California this month. with and whip-sharp band and a horn section that makes his sound both big and bold. The last time he came through we had so much fun at the Track that he said he wanted to do it all over again. Harlis is a real up-andcomer in the music scene in his home town of Huntington Beach and has been making a name for himself by delivering hard-hitting passionate music with soul. Harlis has shared the stage with everyone from Walter Trout, Jimmie Vaughan, ZZ Top, Los Lobos Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Everlast, and Brian Setzer to R&B/Blues legends Etta James, James Cotton, and Wilson Pickett to name a few. What I’m trying to say is that you will like him. On July 29th Carolyn Wonderland will be taking the stage at the State Theater. I have to be honest, I had never heard of her before I was asked if I would like to open up the show for her. So I gave her a listen and it only took a minute to know she was the real deal. Since then I have been listening to her more and more. Let me tell you, there is a good reason that Bob Dylan is one of her biggest fans. This band is fantastic, the songs are great and she can sing, like really sing. She can sound sweet or she can call down the thunder. Carolyn Wonderland is on par with some of the best guitar players I have ever seen.

They always found us. They always knew they could get a handout, or a helping hand. The hobos could smell what house to mark. Because we just couldn’t say “no.” We didn’t care what you’d done, were doing, planned to do. If you needed a friend or a home, you had one. The reasons they came searching were as many and varied as they were. Parents who fought all the time or were divorced or too busy. Castaways just looking for safe harbor. Mothers and Fathers who didn’t get it; who didn’t understand that music was just as important as math. Kids just looking for someone to listen, or spend a little time being asked about their day. Children who liked to laugh and enjoy life. Anyone who welcomed being left alone, not judged, and accepted for who they were, or dreamed of being. Unfortunately, some of our strays got too comfortable. Once we removed the thorn from their paw, they never left. The good times, good food, and good company were just too good. They started getting a little fat. Some expected the acceptance to always be there, no matter what they did. So they did some things they shouldn’t have done. Suddenly they found the door was no longer open; that we did not forgive easily. Once that door was closed, it was very cold outside. Like F. Scott Fitzgerald, we didn’t believe in second chances or second acts. If you burned us, or took us for granted, or didn’t appreciate what we had to offer, you’d soon learn the meaning of long memory. However, those who did know better, those who could read and respect us, never left. And never found any deeper, more loyal friends; nobody who would go to bat for them like we did. And they are still part of the family.

JAZZ & BLUES If You Luv Music Your Gonna Luv This by Eric Benson I’ve been around a while and often amazed but rarely surprised but I was recently when I saw the Tim Allen Band in the Center Plaza Friday 24th of July. Now Tim Allen has surprised me before. Once at a garden party gig he was playing bass and me keys, on break he went in the house and sat down at a grand piano and pounded out 20 or 30 tunes of Elton John and Billy Joel with vocals to a stunned crowd. I asked him “when were you going to tell me you played piano?” Tim’s response “you didn’t ask.” Tim Allen plays with me in the Blue Monday Band that hosts the jam session at the second Monday event at the Barkin’ Dog Grill and he always plays and sings great but when I saw him on the plaza playing the music of his choosing with his own arrangements and even original tunes I was blown away. He sang a cover of “Signed Sealed Delivered” by Stevie Wonder, I closed my eyes and he sang every bit as good as Stevie. The band was smoking also with Joe Barretta on guitar and vocals, Dave

The material spanned 80’s material from Beatles to Yes, Level 42, Kool & the Gang, James Taylor, Billy Joel with tunes you don’t hear bands try and play everyday. I hope to hear more from the Tim Allen band in the future, ‘cause they’re smoking! Blue Monday Party & invitational jam returns to the Barkin’ Dog Grill the second Monday August 10th, with special guest Modesto’s own singer songwriter and guitar slinger Joe Barretta. Joe is probably one of the best songwriters in popular, R & B, Jazz that the valley has ever produced. Joe’s vocals and guitar playing are influenced by Robin Ford, Bobby Caldwell, as well as others. ALL AGES Absolutely Ridiculous by Leia Johnson This summer was absolutely ridiculous! Thanks to all who made it so great. Let’s start this school year with a bang! As you may know, one of the best lakes in the world is only a two hour drive from Motown. Pinecrest Lake! I went about 4 times this summer and I’m planning on going back soon. There are so many different things that you can do at the Lake. You can start your morning on a beautiful hike around the lake or a longer hike to Cleo’s Bath. My whole family of all ages hiked the lake; it’s not a very difficult venture. After that, you can relax on the beach or go for a boat ride on the lake. There are some quiet coves that you can hang out at towards the back of the lake. There are some awesome rocks to jump off of just past the dam. Next to the parking lot/general store area, there is a snack shack that sells amazing root beer floats and burgers. It should be on your to-do list

METAL when you go. Later that night, you can relax and watch a movie under the stars. Pinecrest Amphitheater shows movies that are still in theaters like Inside Out and Max! Check out the dates of certain movies to plan your trip around it at pinecresttheatre.com Pinecrest is an absolutely wonderful place to be and you will notice that tons of Modesto people go there. X-FEST SEASON by Mike Vanek It’s that time again folks... X Fest season!! And once again it features a metal stage. This year, like the past 2 years it will be hosted by the band Eroszion and the bands were hand picked by them. It includes bands from all over the area fully representing the Central Valley. This year the bands are Nothing but Losers, Eroszion, Stigmurder, HARD of HEART, Sworn To The Black, Sektor 209, Scorptrio, Eyes Bleed Hatred HQ, and 17Ten. This year has a solid local lineup that I’m sure will all be battling to sell those coveted $20 X Fest Pre Sales tickets. The draw back is this is pretty much the only hard rock or metal at the giant festival and the bigger the stage gets it remains pretty much the same every year, with local bands all fighting to sell those valuable tickets which they all get a split of and all pretty much promoting to what looks to be the same crowd and the selling point being the local bands that all play pretty much the Yosemite

Strip or around the Area if not for free for $5$10 on a super regular basis and in a lot of cases within weeks or days of X-Fest. I believe that if they brought in a few out of town bands with a buzz like Jill Ferris did at last years Luckyfest or a smaller touring band to headline I think it would improve the selling point of the $20 tickets and bring a new life to the metal stage at the year’s biggest music festival. But it is what it is and for what it’s worth it is a solid lineup including a great mix of styles and genre’s most likely headlined by Nothing But Losers who has played every X fest that has allowed a metal stage in recent years and Stigmurder who are one the longest playing bands in our area. But the band I’m looking forward to is Sworn to the Black. They are a heavy metal masterpiece in every sense of the word!! I will be in attendance to cover the metal stage so look for a full review of my X Fest Experience in next month’s issue of the View!! FIT Aged By Weather Defined By Fitness by Efren Martinez Within the last 5 years I’ve watched my body and skin age faster than in any normal time span. It has all to do with my outdoor endurance training and competitions. My continued exposure to the wind, rain, cold, chlorinated water and especially the sun have added years to my appearance and I’m now starting to notice that I’m getting that leather type of sun skin tone. It’s been between all that and a few broken bones and more fitness injuries than I can count with training so much over the last 10 years; some may think, so is it really worth it? My reply, you bet your sweet Astronauts it is. Nothing makes me happier than seeing my wife happy; OK with that happily said, nothing makes me happier than seeing my wife happy as well as me being able to swim, bike and run outdoors. Sure I belong to one of the most coolest gyms in Modesto and I also have a gym in my home that would include loads of free weights, a

treadmill, an elliptical, and a spin bike as well as a mirror ball on the ceiling of my gym to give me an effect that I’m actually going somewhere while I spin on my spin-bike. Still for me it doesn’t compare to training outside. In fact some of my best training secessions are generally done outside. Over the last year I have had to really rethink this whole outside training thing. The sun’s UV rays can be very dangerous and although melanoma can be treatable, it still can kill you. This is why I’m encouraging all of us who either train outdoors or for that matter have to work outdoors to make sure you are protected from all the harmful elements that come along with natures

beauty. Here are a few suggestions to help you minimize those harmful outdoor elements that could be harming and aging you. If you enjoy running or cycling, try to get it done at the crack of dawn and don’t forget the mosquito repellent along with the sunscreen. Apply your sunscreen 20 minutes prior to your sun exposure, it takes at least 20 minutes for your sunscreen to really get into your skin thus this will give you the best sun block protection. Wearing sunglasses, a visor and a long sleeve running/biking jersey will also help minimize your skin exposure to your arms. Staying well hydrated daily will not only will help you with your fitness challenges, but it also helps with your skin/complexion.

If you train as hard as I do make sure to wash your face as much as you wash your hands per day. Taking care of ourselves goes beyond exercising and eating right, we must also include that we are caring for our skin and hygiene. On a personal note, my evening bedtime hygiene ritual generally takes about 10 minutes, but that’s also why I’m so gorgeous, well at least my wife thinks so. All kidding aside, I love training and competing outdoors, triathlons preferably. While we all strive to better our fitness challenges we shouldn’t forget about following Gods lead in caring for our bodies as a whole, or for myself as it is a temple of Christ. Efren Martinez

ZEN WATER by Mary Layton With the drought upon us water is on everyone’s mind. Or at least we hope so. When I moved to Modesto in1994 I was touched by that simple but very significant Modesto arch holding the city’s motto : Water Wealth Contentment Health. Wow! It says it all. Water brings all these things. We all need water. I couldn’t live without water. Who could? There’s nothing better than swimming in a pool or the river, or to take a cold shower to beat the Central Valley’s summer heat. And now that water is becoming scarcer - and more expensive - it makes me appreciate it even more.

The old Chinese culture has made many acute observations of water such as water cleanses and refreshes all creatures without distinction and without judgment. Water freely and fearlessly goes deep beneath the surface of things. Water is fluid and of all things is the softest. It cannot be broken. If you throw a heavy rock on it water will yield. Water yields to the rock in it’s path, yet eventually wears the rock down. Even though water is soft and responsive, it is extremely powerful. T’ai Chi players learn that in assuming the nature of water they will be able to overcome a forceful opponent; the soft overcomes the hard. Thurs & Sats 7am-1pm Kaiser Medical Center, Modesto Perfect location for people who want to take out two birds with one stone: Grab your week’s produce at the same time as your doctor’s appointment, or picking up a prescription. 4601 Dale Road, Thurs 8am-2pm (year-round) Turlock- This is their first season on Saturdays! Aside from the usual fruits & veggies, they are known for their cupcakes, shaved ice, and beef jerky. You can also find soaps, crafts, honey & lavender here. Center & Main St. Sats, 8am-1pm Oakdale- A night option for our busy schedules, and this year brings a twist! Local produce on one side, car show on the other! Bring your blanket, buy your dinner for your picnic basket, and let the kiddos play while you listen to live music. The third Wednesday of the month will also include wine tasting for those 21 and over. North 3rd Avenue & Bianchi Plaza, Weds 5pm-8pm Riverbank – The City of Action offers another evening adventure option for those seeking cooler temperatures or who have to work during the day. Valley’s Got Talent ModestoView loves local talent and there is a huge event at the Gallo Center on August 28th & 29th. The 7 pm performance on Friday, August 28, is the audience voting show. The audience vote will count as the equivalent of one judge’s vote when the prize winners are announced after the performance at 7 pm Saturday, August 29.

Mancini Bowl - Aug 9th Free. Modstock Music Festival, 10 AM Bring on the peace and break out the tye dye, local hippies! Graceada Park’s Mancini Bowl will be turned into a mini Woodstock on August 9th as local youth bands, vendors, crafters and foodies come together for a circus-like festival that grows bigger every year.
