Tour in May, Graffiti Summer in June and then our 4th of July Modestocana. MoBand in the Park and our Stanislaus County Fair events have kept us going at a record pace. We finished off this month with a city-wide concert with Modesto Porchfest. We have seen some toasty days, but we have all kept our cool with the amazing line up of things happening in our daily lives. You think to yourself, we have to slow down, but with all that is going on, we can’t. The greater Modesto area is loaded with good things to do. Last month, one thing I learned is that you don’t try to calm down someone who is road raging. In the middle of all of these things happening, the heat and our business, you need to stay safe and if you ever get involved with an angry person on the road, please go to safety at the Police Station, Fire Station or go someplace very populated. Be safe and take it easy. Speaking of taking it easy, August is the time to slow things down and get back to basics. Let’s explore the great outdoors, feel the wind in your hair when you are riding the rails, or running a trail or a river or riding your bike. Let’s stop and smell the roses, pick some fruit, wander the farmers markets and simplify our dining and

enjoy what the Modesto USA community has to offer. Summer freshness has never tasted so good. Modesto really is a “Classic American City” and in addition to our classic Graffiti history and our Rockabilly music history, one of the things that makes us the most classic is our fresh produce, fresh eats and our farmer’s markets. So this month, we welcome a new ViewCrew member Tasha Williams as she takes us on a Modesto gastronomic Tour de Food. We hope it inspires you to get out there and try something new. Modesto Friends it is all about exploration. Did you go to Music in the Plaza on a Friday night? Did you solve the Clue-game Mystery 3rd Thursday Art Walk? Did you find the pop-up bar in the Art Alley? Have you been to a jam at the Barkin’ Dog our checked out a show on the patio at Minnie’s? There is so much going on that you need to check out. But we need more. Have you enjoyed Sunday Funday in 10th Street Plaza at Ralston’s Goat? What? Not yet? What is super cool, is that many of these bands have just learned to play at the VMI Music Institute and are learning to rock and they get to play alongside experienced rockers. This annual BBQ Festival is now a State Qualifier for the Kansas City BBQ Society and a Team of the Year (TOY) event for the California BBQ Association. Art is Hot in August By Jim Christiansen It has been a Hot Summer and art events aren’t cooling off in August. First Friday has become populated with more events that coincide with Music in the Plaza and First Friday Market. At Tri-Chromatic Gallery it is First Friday Craft Grab. August 4 is the next Black Hearts Market at Queen Bean put together by artists Kristy Moore and Patrick Barr with 25 artists on display during their July event. Mistlin Gallery has extended Friday hours all month, 5 to 8 pm, exhibiting “We are Not the Last” and the CCAA members “Summer Splash” combined shows. The first is a special installation by artists Juan Rodriguez, Laura Stokes and Jimmy Abuan. August 3rd is the Central California Art Association monthly meeting at Mistlin Gallery. Cyndy Davis will give the Artist Talk based on her travel sketch books. These Meetings are open to the public. The Gallery also fields a Life Drawing class every Wednesday night, for those artists wanting to explore drawing or painting the human form with a live model. $10 for the no instructor sessions. August 5, the Valley Suncatchers and Mistlin Gallery offer a FREE Introduction to Plein Air painting Workshop, led by Rick Ingraham. If you don’t know the term, it is about painting live in the great outdoors. Space is limited, call the gallery if interested 209 Downtown Turlock hosts “Art About Town” at various venues August 10. Most of the action on Main Street near Carnegie Arts Center and the CSUS Gallery on Main area. Tracy also has an art walk, August 11. Both start 6 pm. I usually get enough of that looking up art walk artists for this column. The August theme will be Pirates Booty Treasure Hunt, encouraging sleuths to visit all of the galleries and win prizes. Lots of new people at ArtWalk. Meanwhile, I will replace Rita Barbano at Barking Dog. She and Clay Bedford will move over to Doubletree to show with Patrick Barr and Kristy Moore. Last month was huge, incorporating all of our participating galleries, a pop up bar, and prizes with a Cluegame-style mystery hunt to find out who stole the American Graffiti Statue from 5 points. DYI View - Paint for Fun! by Abigail Murphy Have you ever wanted to learn how to paint like a professional? Have you ever wanted to enjoy a glass of delicious wine or beer while doing so? Look no further! Susan Wagoner opened Art Time and Sip Wine, a wine and art experience that creatively combined her longtime experience of teaching art and bartending, back in January of 2017! Each class is taught by a local artist that guides the participant in step-by-step lessons that can make anyone a successful artist. Canvases, paints, brushes, easels, and aprons are all provided in the class, but wine and beer are available for purchase (or you can even bring in your own bottle!) The studio is located in Downtown Modesto on the corner of 16th and J Street in the Damrell building. Classes range from 2 to 3 hours and prices range from $40-$50 per class. Jeff Brown and Blake Humble, were in Chicago and they popped into a bar for some refreshment. They ordered one of the local specialties, a Radler and it was refreshing, but it just didn’t have enough punch. So they added a shot of gin and aperitif Campari. This was a winner. Now, this beverage has a whole new life here in Modesto at Churchkey. New this month is a full new bar, that features our very own DoGood Distillery and their very own Gin, Rum and Whiskeys. So that brings us the CK Raddler. You will notice, when you walk in the front door, that the bar at Churchkey is huge! But keep your eyes to the right and you will notice something new, a full bar! The best of both worlds now fellow ModestoView cocktail lovers. Amanda Martin is the master of the mix. We start with a mix of Do Good Distillery Gin and Campari over ice and add fresh squeezed lemon juice. Shake and pour over ice. This already sounds delicious, now Jeff pours a refreshing Shofferhofer Shandy with Grapefruit over this mix and stir it up. It is then topped off with a nice wedge of Grapefruit and it is time to enjoy this refreshing liquid treat. This is some serious citrus flavored summer refreshment friends. The blend of DoGood Gin and the Shofferhofer is magic. The MJC Dance Department has been selected by the American College Dance Association and the esteemed Jacob’s Pillow Dance directors to perform for the Inside/Out Festival on Thursday, August 24th. The dance, “Vanishing at the Water’s Edge” choreographed by Kim T. Davis and performed by 12 dances from the MJC Off-Balance Dance Ensemble in an outdoor amphitheater in Berkshire Hills. Talent and Where to Find it - Robert Ulrich by Chris Murphy

Modesto is a treasure trove of talent. From the elementary school theatres, to YES Company to the Modesto Performing Arts, Prospect Theatre, Gallo Repertory, Denair Gaslight and more, we have so many great options. Live theatre performances really make our cultural scene come alive and these shows take you to another place. Many famous people on the silver screen and TV got their start here in Modesto. One of our hometown heroes learned his craft on our local stages, and has gone on to Hollywood to cast some of the most popular shows on TV and in film. Robert Ulrich and his Ripon native actress wife, Kim Johnston Ulrich are comfortable both onstage and behind the scenes. The smash show Glee has been one of his most high profile casting gigs and this year, he has the honor of being nominated for an Emmy. He previously won an Emmy for Glee in 2011 and has been nominated 7 times. I feel a special connection to this family as I was lucky to purchase their parents home in Modesto, and from everything I have seen in the house, they were raised by creative fun parents and this has been passed on to Robert, Kim and their two kids. Robert was recently back in Modesto for the 50th Anniversary of Modesto Performing Arts, and he will be back in town for the Valley Talent Project, where his advice and direction are like magic dust then sprinkled on these local up and coming talents. Let’s get to know Robert. ModestoView: What first attracted you to live stage performance as a youth? Robert Ulrich: I was always obsessed with show business from the time I can remember. When I was a child, I would go to shows at the Modesto Jr. College. When I was in high school, I attended Modesto Youth Theatre’s production of OLIVER. I was blown away. I vividly remember Richard Tierce and Jennifer Davis being incredible - I was forever hooked. MV: What actors really inspired you? Robert: Too many to mention. I grew up loving Jack Lemon, Marlon Brando, Jimmy Stewart, Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe and my favorite, Steve McQueen - in college Robert DeNiro was the all time greatest - I had his picture on my wall in my NY apartment. There are too many ones now to list - I love Denzel Washington, Leonardo DiCaprio, Emma Stone, Mahershala Ali, Ryan Gosling, Octavia Spencer and on and on and on, but obviously Meryl Streep is the queen.

MV: What does it feel like to win an Emmy? MV: How did your parents encourage your Robert: It is the best. of Cooper. He is a real talent and he takes his work extremely seriously. I produced a movie that will be coming out soon, Billy Boy (now Juvenile), and Cooper did a day of reshoots on that and the work is stunning. I just visited him in Kentucky shooting another film which I produced, Mail Order Monster. MV: What is that special something that you look for when you see a new talent? Robert: It is just that special something that is indescribable. The IT factor. MV: Any advice for the performers in the upcoming Valley Talent Project at the Gallo Center on Aug 25th an 26th? Robert: Just to be themselves. Not to be anything more than they are. I always tell actors “you are enough” MV: Describe your perfect day. Robert: With my family and friends, seeing a movie, and working on a project. I am the ultimate work-a-holic. MV: Our signature question – Beatles or Stones? Robert: Beatles

The Valley Talent Project is seeking out the next stars, and you never know, who will be the next Jeremy Renner, Grandaddy or Lindsay Pierce. At the Gallo Center on August 25 and 26, Emmy Winning Casting director Robert Ulrich and TV and film star Kim Ulrich will be part of the judging team so see who’s got the most talent. There are categories for singers, songwriters, actors, performers, dancers comedians and more. Over the last few months, the judges have been watching auditions and picking the finalists. They will take the stage on Friday the 25th to perform for an audience vote and then will perform again on the 26th for the final judging. I ran off on an adventure with one of my favorite songwriter friends a few weeks ago, on a weeklong tour through a few states. It was high time to escape from this valley heat for a while. We went to Phoenix. Brilliant plan, right? Well, in fact, it was. Because it was during our thankfully brief stay in Phoenix that we got to spend a few hours

roaming through one of the most magical places I’ve visited - the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM.) This sprawling space houses thousands upon thousands of rare treasures, with a separate room for each continent. Just about every country that is or once was on the map has its own wall display featuring an array of instruments. Peruvian whistling water vessels; a “walking-stick fiddle” from Germany; a goblet drum from China dating back to around 4000 BC (the oldest piece in the MIM collection); instruments fashioned from garbage and played by Paraguay’s Recycled Orchestra, as seen in the documentary ‘Landfillharmonic’ which screened at our State Theater

a few months back; and June Carter’s autoharp were just a few of my favorite pieces. We even got to play around with a theremin - a dream come true for me. The MIM was founded by Robert J. Ulrich - a name you may be familiar with if you’ve been enjoying the Valley Talent competition over the past several years. (Okay, their Ulrich is not actually the same person as our Ulrich - I checked - but it makes for an uncannily cool segue.) Valley Talent is back at the Gallo Center this month, with two nights highlighting the best in local music, dance and more performance art. Last year one of our Modesto Unplugged team members, Lisette Sims, did us proud when she and her trio Lisette & The Loudmouths took down the Best Band prize. I’ve always felt that the right people won their categories. Unlike that time on ‘America’s Got Talent’ when those performing dogs beat the guy who played the giant Earth Harp. I still haven’t recovered from that heartbreak. The first round of performances begins at 7 PM on Friday 8/25. Finalists will return 24 hours later to share their talents a second time, followed by prize announcements including a special Audience Favorite award you can vote on. ROCKABILLY The Powerful Delta Bombers by Jennifer Allsup When the weather gets hot, it is time to turn up the heat on Modesto’s most famous music. Ever since 1938, Rockabilly has been a part of our music culture. Back then it was called Hillbilly Boogie, and this music lives on in living color. Big slappin’ bass, driving guitars, great looks, pinups, tattoos and more. Yes, this is our music, let’s go party at the Central California Boogie featuring the Delta Bombers on Aug 11. We caught up with lead singer Chris Moinichen while he is on tour in Europe. Jenn Allsup. How did you and your fellow band mates come together? Chris Moinichen: In 2008, Andrew and I found one another on MySpace through a listing to start a rockabilly/rock n’ roll band. We found our first drummer and bass player that same year. JA. Since being together in 2008, what was the most memorable journey touring? CM. They are all memorable in their own way,

but I’d have to say the first time going to Europe to play back in 2011. I fell in love with a small town called Bruges in Belgium. All of the original buildings are still standing from the 1100s! JA. Chris, as the power-front man of the The Delta Bombers, what was the reason to start singing? CM: I started singing when I was about 3 years old when my father would put on Elvis records and would sing for the neighbors. I used to play a plastic guitar and sing next to him, it’s been that way ever since. JA. Why the name Delta Bombers? CM. To be honest, we didn’t really know at the time. We all have a love for blues music and especially delta blues. JA. Can you tell us what songs you have written that describe your life? CM. There are a lot of them really. Most of them have something to do with something that has happened in my life, but “Run and Hide” is

always a close song to me I’d say. JA. What was your most memorable party traveling on the road and why? CM. All of them really...it’s hard to pick just one for this question. We’ve always loved weekenders where we can actually have a chance to hang out and relax with friends and fans around the world like Psychobilly, via Las Vegas, The Rave, and Nashville Boogie. Lost Horizons formed in late 2016 and hail from Modesto. Members include Cody Nye Vocals, Eddie Biedebach Guitar who started writing music together. They eventually recruited Aaron Kelch Bass and Jonny Avila Guitar to join and start a full band with Jojo Jorgensen on Drums. They now have eight songs and are working on more. Their plan is to record an EP by the end of this summer and follow that with a full length album. Lost Horizon’s biggest influences are Motionless In White, The Amity Affliction, Hearts Wake and Parkway Drive. The guy’s tell me their music is about “self-realization and development”. They focus on hardships to make it relatable to the listeners. I can understand that as well as some of you out there. Hardships are a part of life. The hardships we endure make us the people we are today. These guys are best friends that like to do crazy shit but manage to stay out of trouble. Practices are held at the bands managers house Mr. John Kuhn, he

is Lost Horizon’s heart, giving them a place to practice, write and create. He provides the push to be the best band they can be. The guys listed off some of their favorite 209 local Metal bands including Painting Chaos, Nothing But Losers, Hellheart, Hard Knox and Whitewolf. I personally enjoy hearing local bands supporting their brothers and sisters in music. Currently they are writing new material and enjoy being on the road playing out of town shows. But they love playing local with all of their friends and say everyone’s support and sticking by them thru their ups and downs means enough to them that they mentioned it for this article. Values determine the future.” Stephanie Gallo, Vice President of Marketing at E&J Gallo Winery, quoted renowned Canadian designer, Robert L. Peters, in welcoming the more than 150 Modesto-area designers who gathered at Gallo for the inaugural Modesto Design Collective (MO.DE) on June 27th. This was the first and likely the largest such gathering of designers in Modesto’s history. Designers of all types – architects, fashion, graphic, interior, product, and UX/UI designers, students and other design allies – came together to socialize and network, to celebrate the rich history of design in Modesto, and to share ideas to elevate and support our local design community. The event affirmed the valuable role designers play in society. Designers are creative problem solvers and the process of design (often referred to as “design thinking” or “human-centered design”) can result in innovation across all sectors of society. “We need the creativity and innovative thinking of designers to address critical social problems in our community,” said Marian Kaanon, President and CEO of the Stanislaus Community Foundation. “Cities from Austin to Portland to Salt Lake City are thriving in large part thanks to burgeoning design communities that are making, creating and innovating in all areas.” The gathering was an opportunity to evolve a collective vision for MO.DE going forward. The MO.DE brand, designed by the talented local designer Eric Le, was unveiled, as was a mission statement: “The Modesto Design Collective (MO.DE) is a community of designers, innovators, makers, and creative visionaries. We are committed to making Modesto a vibrant design capital that values, celebrates and supports design and the broader creative community.” The 170 designers who registered for the MO.DE event were asked the simple question “What do you think makes a city a vibrant design capital? What would you like to see in Modesto/Stanislaus that would support you in your creative practice?” Their many ideas shaped the strategy of MO.DE going forward. The Collective is committed to building: • creative community: At the heart of a vibrant design capital is a vibrant community of designers (and other creatives) who are connected, encouraged, supported, and valued; • creative confidence: We need to elevate the profile of design and design’s value in the community. To become a vibrant design capital we

have to believe that we can be one. We need to look back to uncover and celebrate our rich design history and heritage. And we need to look forward with our community of designers helping us to imagine an inspiring future vision for our city; • creative capacity: We need to attract, retain and support local design talent and provide educational and professional opportunities for them to excel in their creative practice. We need designers in bring creative problem-solving and innovation into all sectors of the community (e.g., agriculture, business, education, government, and social sectors). And we need to create a buzzing, physical space where designers can convene, connect and collaborate. In 1919, a small group of designers gathered in Weimer, Germany, a city with a population today of under 70,000. Together they created the Bauhaus, the most influential modern design movement. Bike Riding and Foodie Dreams with Modesto’s Very Own Tour de Food by Tasha Williams

Bicycles riding through Modesto is quite a common site. But what if your next bike ride included you, your friends and family, plus, a few friendly strangers? What if the entire group rode together, stopping their bicycles periodically, to experience a taste of the best food in town? A sort of bicycle, “Tour de Food” adventure, if you will. . . . . Would you be up for it? Would you be into it? Modesto View Magazine is cordially inviting you create your own Tour de Food. We have prepared a sample road map with the goal of sampling as many places as possible. As a true “foodie,” you can ride all day, or simply join in at whatever restaurant you desire, during the time frame that best suits your Foodie Dreams! Debra Martinez happily owns and operates the establishment. Coffee is top-notch, prepared by barista’s Mayra and Sarkis. Do not ride off without saying hello to Catering Coordinator, Kevin Williams. He is a real kick! 8:30 am - Crepes at Deva Café – Here, cyclists will taste the savory fresh fruit crepes filled with strawberries and bananas, topped off with whipped cream and a chocolate drizzle. A friendly and artsy presence is felt here, due to the kind-hearted owner, Lorena Loftis. Decorated with paintings and photos

created by local artists, including the beautifully hand painted tables done by Jamie Souza, you will love the vibe. In fact, (pictured here), notice the table displaying Lorena’s likeness with a yummy crepe plate resting gently in her hand. If we are lucky, we may meet downtown Modesto celebrity of sorts, 92-year-old, Mr. Harley Cooney. Known lovingly to most as “The Mayor of J Street,” he has a table painted in his likeness as well.

A Harmonious Harvest and a Happy Birthday Ladybug

by Middagh Goodwin August is upon us and without X-Fest happening this year, for many to look forward to going to or performing at we will all have to look elsewhere for our entertainment. Local promoters have already been looking outside the box to host or create events but we need to make sure we support them to keep the arts and music scene growing and strong. July ended big with Porchfest 30 homes hosted bands in Downtown, College and Laloma Neighborhoods. What a great first-year event and a fantastic way to showcase local musicians. I know I can not wait until this happens again next year. 37 regional acts also performed the Center Stage at the Stanislaus County Fair this year. These two events and the continuance of Music in the Plaza give our local talent additional outlets to show their stuff. We all need to look outside the box to create opportunities for our artistic community. I hope that you all took some time to get out and support old favorites and catch new talent. The Modesto Area Music Awards will be held at t the State Theatre on October 10th.

BLUES Dog Days of Summer by ‘Big’ Earl Matthews Hello everyone. We are entering the dog days of summer and I hope you are ready for some great music. Starting the month off on Aug 3rd New Orleans legends The Subdudes are coming to Santa Cruz. These guys have been hard at it since 1987 and are still finding new ways to mix all the best flavors of southern American music in the way that only New Orleanians know how. Staying on that South Louisiana tip Mr. Sonny Landreth is coming to Harlow’s in Sac on the 11th. While his music is steeped in the blues his style has also been called Slydeco because of his mastery of the slide guitar and his obvious Zydeco influence. Are you excited? I am, I have seen this fella before and he is one of the best. On the 12th I will be up in Sonora at the Bourbon Barrel with the Poorhouse Millionaires. It’s a great little spot with excellent food and an out of this world Whiskey selection. Also on the 12th Rob Hill Band will be at P.Wexfords. Rob’s Jazzy Blue style is out of this world and will put you in the perfect weekends chill mood. Now if you like your blues light on fire and

turned up to 11 check out Anthony Gomes at Moe’s Alley on the 13th. Anthony has been burning a path all over the world and winning over new fans every day with his blues rock guitar mastery. He has toured with Eric Clapton and Tedeschi Trucks Band. I honestly can’t say enough about how good he is. I have been the this location over in Grass Valley as well a couple times, its pretty cool. Now on the 19th I’m going to be back on that Oakdale Beer Train with the Poorhouse Millionaires for a little fun run up the hill and back while the sun goes down we turn the party up. Don’t miss it. Just a few days latter on the 24th at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in San Jose, the show is called Guitarsonists featuring Chris Cain, Daniel Castro, Mighty Mike Schermer. Three monster Guitar players, three great singers, each one with a style all their own. It’s going to

be a great show for those who go. On the 26th I will be heading north again to Sacramento to Mango’s for a fun little sit down dinner show. We are excited to be checking

We have some great local talent and many of them have their own showcases. August 3rd at the Queen Bean join AJ DeMello for Stand for Charity a monthly Comedy Showcase for a good cause. This month it is MyTV26 our local Non-Profit Station. Helping raise funds, awareness and have you laughing is Connor Martin with Jacoby Bruton with special musical guest Mattea Overstreet. Anthony K presents Comedy at Cheroots every First and Third Tuesday of the month. Some very funny comics in a very intimate Lounge. Did you know that they have a full bar and you can smoke inside? Willpower by Mary Layton On some level everybody deals with some kind of compulsion or addiction. It takes willpower to face this problem. We may be addicted to all kinds of substances and desires, to shopping, to working and busyness, to thinking and talking all the time. We may be obsessed with perfection, collecting or hoarding. We love the adrenaline rush that comes with any sort of excitement. Without it we may feel empty, lonely, bored and useless. Recently a friend of mine told me that she wanted to change her pattern of addiction. She feels that she is overweight and also that she has been battling different health issues for quite some time. After some research she decided that she needed to go on a special diet. Knowing that this was going to be tough for her I suggested that I would go on the diet too and that we could call each other every day and compare notes. She liked the idea. Even though I don’t have health issues I could see that losing a few pounds wouldn’t hurt and also that it would be a chance to see first hand what it would feel like to change my programming.

Would I have the willpower to stick to the diet? I decided to follow the diet faithfully. It was tough the very first few days. I felt hungry in my mind without feeling hungry in my tummy. That was interesting. Sometimes it helped to talk to friends or I’d get involved with an activity to distract myself from the feeling of deprivation. I reminded myself what prompted me to do the diet : To keep my end goal in mind which was to learn more about willpower and to give my friend support. Pretty soon my energy started to increase. I felt lighter, more flexible. Internally I moved from being on autopilot to a more sensitive assessment of my needs. I was able to control my emotions better. It made me feel stronger. From a Zen point of view it was an eye-opener to see that we can overcome our primal instincts. It’s an interesting challenge to go against your basic wiring. Summer was great, wasn’t it?

Modesto sure knows how to create good ways to beat the heat. My #1 activity this summer was going to shows. From live music to movies to theatre productions, I was beyond entertained during these scorching hot months. All of these fun things don’t have to end with school starting. Live performances are a year round favorite of mine. The way I stay up to date with local musicians and concerts to attend is by following the artist’s social media’s and checking flyers at local venues and staying up to date on the calendar at www.modestoview.com. The Juline Foundation for Children is a remarkable program that gives all children the opportunity to be self-expressive through dance. The goal of their ‘Outreach Program’ is to benefit and inspire kids in schools that may not have access to a dance institution. By providing lessons and costumes, the dancers at Juline’s are positively inspiring much of our youth. At the very end of this project, all the involved students get to perform, as stars, at Modesto High School for their friends and families. If you would like to support this wonderful program, purchase tickets to the JFC fundraiser at Gallo on September 21st. The month starts with a sizzles and a rocking good time with the 6th annual Modstock in Graceda Park on August 6th. Cruise down on a Sunday afternoon to the free all ages event hosted by VMI rocks. From 5:30pm-7pm, the I Am Project Photo Exhibit seeks to help us learn a lot about humanity through seeing faces and connecting their stories.
