It is amazing how fast this summer went by and how August has now become a workhorse month. When I was growing up, August was filled with summer play days, and vacations as we counted down to Labor Day. Now, it is back to school, days of preparing backpacks and school lunches and those famous first-day-ofschool pictures. It also puts a lot of pressure on the first two weeks to squeeze out any last bit of summer vacations; so in this issue we will give you some last minute fun tips. Most importantly in August, gotta wish my amazing wife Becky a very Happy Birthday. There is a new era in local music beginning. It has been hard over the last few years since Fat Cat closed to get a lot of the touring bands here in Modesto. Sadly, we have lost the Portal operated by Lonny Davis that had a nice capacity and we are still looking for that 200-400 person live music venue. The Gallo Center has been working hard to fill the void while the State Theatre has focused mainly on movies. Our local restaurants like Barking Dog, Rivets, P Wex, Grand Cru, Udder Place, the Bistro, Nino’s, Moon & Sixpence and Ralston’s Goat have been filling in as much as possible. But this August marks a new era with the FruitYard Amphitheater that can host up to 3,500 people and puts us on the map with Wente, the casinos and some of the other larger regional places that can attract top-flight star quality. We will learn a lot more about this in our interview with Joe Traina. Finally, I want to thank all of our ViewCrew and
See Global View on Page 15 for more updates the team at Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group that worked so hard during July while Abigail and I travelled to Mongolia and China to fit and distribute wheelchairs to those in need in 5 cities across Mongolia from Ulaanbaatar to the Russian border. It was an incredibly enriching experience for us and changed our lives. The realization that we can have such an amazing impact on those in need is unreal. I have created a journal of our trip at www.modestoview. com . I am grateful to all that supported us, Lonny Davis and the Hope Haven West team that performs this mission all over Central and South America and now in Asia. We also close and open a new chapter this month as our All-Ages Editor Leia Johnson pens her last column for us as she heads off to Chico State as a journalism major. Very cool. Just as my daughter Abbey took over from her
sister Madison, our very first All Ages editor, we now welcome Leia’s younger sister Sofia Johnson to the ViewCrew team. I love the youth point of view here in Modesto. We are an amazing family and community here in the greater Modesto area and it is a wonderful place to live and work, thanks to all the great people that really reach out to support each other, in friendships, in business and in volunteerism. Thanks for being part of the ModestoView family and let’s continue on our own mission to “Serve Civic Pride Daily”. Thanks and gratitude, Chris Murphy Publisher & Founder ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

This summer, our community gathered together to celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting of a brand new playground structure in Graceada Park in Modesto, California. This play structure was built to replace part of the Graceada Park playground structure that was damaged by fire in August, 2016. The playground was rebuilt with funds raised by the Leadership Modesto Class of 2018. Leadership Modesto is a program partnered with the Modesto Chamber of Commerce, the City of Modesto, and the College Area Neighborhood Alliance (CANA), which gives its members a unique perspective on Modesto’s

community and leadership. Members of Leadership Modesto are enrolled in a ten month program designed to provide “a unique opportunity for participants to meet and exchange ideas, grapple with current local and regional issues, and begin the important self-development of place and purpose required to assume leadership roles” according to modchamber.org. By several accounts, this Class of 2018 has made a name for themselves in the community with their impressive Graceada Park project. I spoke with Ashley Weaver, City of Modesto Recreation and Neighborhoods Services Manager, about her experience with Leadership Modesto this year. Ashley said, “three years ago, our pool and our splash pad were actually set on fire. Then, a year after that, our playground was also vandalized. So half of our playground structure has been out of commission for the
Photo Credits: ModestoNews.com last two years. This year’s Leadership Modesto Class of 2018 came to us and said ‘we want to help with bringing that playground structure back to the park; we want it out there for the kids to play on in the community.’ We said, ‘great! What’s your plan?’ And they said they were going to raise $60,000 in three weeks. They raised the money, and it was full steam ahead at that point! It was such an awesome experience to see the group come together, the community come together, to get the playground back out to the park for the kids to play on.” Kirstie Boyett, a member of the Leadership Modesto Class of 2018 responsible for the restoration of the park, described the process of selecting the park as their class project. The members of her class would meet the first Friday of every month and do anything from tour manufacturing plants to role play making legislation in the City Council chambers to glean insight on the many facets of infrastructure that make our city run. In February of 2018, after considering a dozen other projects, her class selected the restoration of the Graceada Park play structure as their class project. Once they had picked the project, they “needed to go for the money” said Boyett, “and we needed local support because this was going to be $60,000!” Through the skills and connections their class had made through Leadership Modesto, they were able to find a donor to contribute a third of the funds needed almost immediately. They quickly raised the remaining donations needed to complete the project, and have gone on to raise a total of $87,000 in just four months. Mayor Ted Brandvold praised the class for their commendable effort, saying “it’s an amazing project that they took on to get this playground replaced after two years. They worked very tirelessly on this thing and produced this for our community. It’s been a great project.” We have just passed the deadline for enrollment applications for the Class of 2019, but anyone interested in being a part of Leadership Modesto and affecting real change in our community should check out the application process online via www.modchamber.org/leadership-modesto/ or speak to an alumnus of the program. Kirstie Boyett said it’s “one of the best things I’ve done in Modesto, and I’ve been here for twenty-two years!”

ART WALK
Hot August Nights
3
by Jim Christiansen I hope Hot August Nights aren’t as hot as July Art Walk. But rain or shine, downtown Third Thursday Art Walk goes on. In case you missed it, there is some carryover into August for show openings you might missed. First one to close is the Celebration of Fiber Arts at the Mistlin Gallery, with the Country Crossroads Quilters. This impressive collection of art quilts, sewn constructions, small to large closes August 3. Over at the Chartreuse Muse, the Emergence Show has opened. Geared to new and emerging artists, I got to see some new stuff from artists I didn’t know. On exhibition at The Muse through August are: Kolaya Wilson, Taylor Berchtold, Rachael Payne, Nikki Dettinger, Sharon Bear, Kathy Tuchalski, Robert Merritt, Victoria Hardy, Morgan Andre, Laura Webb, Dottie Lo Bue, Melissa Stabi, Cynthia Biles, and Neko McDaniel. It was a crowded reception for Art Walk, but I look forward to returning before end of the month. I spent some time Wednesday before Art Walk hanging 5 large paintings by Chella Gonsalves at Barkin Dog. 5 large paintings. Walking by during the start of the art walk usual Thursday Jam, I found Chella in the patio sun greeting patrons in for art and music. Across the street, on the shady side of 11th at Tim Allen sweating at the piano, with the side walk filled with artists and art from Tresetti’s to Preservation Coffee. About that time, I’d faded in the heat and missed the artists at Still Smoking, and a very good show at the Carolyn Huff Gallery, 13th and K., Huff features Rick Ingraham and Vince Welsh on display through August. Hope to drop in August 16th Art Walk night to check that one out. Artists seeking a place to display of their work, St Stan’s has an Open Call to Artists, any media for Art Walk nights. Drop in the venue, or email jill@ststans.com to get on the roster. Potter, Don Hall, will share his experiences with the group Potters for Peace, who establish ceramic water filter factories in the developing world at the Mistlin Gallery quarterly meeting. Refreshments will be served starting 6:30 and program starts at 7 pm. August 14 opens the Autumn Art Festival III at the gallery. This is members juried show. Awards will be given at a CCAA fundraising gala on August 25 at the Mistlin Gallery. Gourmet food, wine and music are included in the $30 ticket, which can be purchased in the Mistlin Gallery at 1015 J Street Modesto, CA, phone 209-529-3369 or online www.ccaagallery.org The show can be visited free during Mistlin Gallery regular hours.
THURS
5:30PM - 10PM If that isn’t Hot enough, you can head down to Turlock for the Carnegie Art Showcase. Bill Harris won the Best of Show award for his watercolor, “The Laundromat.” It will be on view with the other showcase artists and award winners until the end of the Month. Awards of Excellence were given to Vickie Boese, Jack Morris, Donna Wayman-Maurer, Virginia White and Linda Abbott. Honorable Mentions went to Margarita Anderson, William Conrad, Dave Dolan, Barbara Gill and Nathaniel Oliviera.

In our voyage to “Drink Turlock”, we’ve stumbled upon another gem in our favorite neighboring city. The Pizza Factory, which opened 9 years ago, introduced iPourIt Technology to their taps back in October, and it has been a big hit! They have 10 digital taps, which feature a rotating selection of (mostly) California-based craft beers. All 10 happened to be Californian when we were there, but every once in a while they will feature something from out of state. When you order your pizza (and they’re delicious by the way- try the Pride, whose namesake hails from local High School Pittman’s mascot, the lions), let the staff know you also want to get a beer wrist band. The staff will check your ID, and take it along with a credit card to begin a beer tab. The bracelet contains an RFID chip, which not only activates the taps for you, but keeps track of how much is poured. You are allowed 32 ounces before your bracelet no longer activates the taps, but fear not beer fans, you just have to go back to the counter to reactivate your bracelet. How does it work? The bracelets contain a round, watch-like tag that houses the iPourItchip. Tap the chip against the Pizza Factory slogan on the sign above the tap you want to pour from. You’ll know it worked if the sign emits a green light (green for “go!”). Now is your chance to show the world your secret talent of how to pour the perfect pint! Oh, you’re a newbie? That’s ok! Watch the training video on
8
the screen and become an expert in seconds. The beer normally ranges from $.30 to $.45 an ounce, making a full pint between $4 and $7, but they have special nights where beer is only $.25 an ounce. Keep an eye on Facebook to stay in the loop of their daily deals. What did we like about it? We were able to sample all the beers on tap, without having to order a flight. We like flights, but you risk the beer getting warm before you get to drink them all if you are out with chatty friends (as we often are). This way you can walk up to the tap, pour 2 ounces, walk back, drink it, and go get more without any wait, ensuring every sip is ice cold. After sampling them all, we each picked our favorite for a full pint: Brandi picked the Blaker Brewing Hazy IPA (Ceres, CA) and Chisto picked the St. Stan’s Red Sky Ale (Modesto, CA). You can’t beat the price, and you can’t beat the fun. This makes a great date night, or invite all your friends to have a “pour off ”, just because it’s a weekday. Every day there is reason to celebrate, so pick something to toast to and honor the heck out of it. Sip on, friends!

PERFORMANCE A Time to Perform in August By Kaye Osborn Here’s what is happening in our neck of the woods: Gallo Center for the Arts The Valley Talent Project August 3 & 4 Come support our local talent!
Summer is in full swing and there is still time to enjoy theatrical productions! I am very excited about one in particular at Prospect Theater Project. They are staging Master Class about the opera singer Maria Callas. Imagine trying to cast this production. Well, you are in luck as Annalisa Winberg, a friend of mine, who is an international opera singer, is playing the lead. And guess what? The show is directed by her daughter, Carolina Stevens, a recent graduate from Southern Oregon University and a 2014 Valley Talent Winner. Another good friend of mine, Margaret Zabel, is the accompanist. The rest of the cast has been commuting from outof-the area. Do not miss this show! I’ve got my tickets. The August shows will be on Aug 2,3,4, and 5th. The Prospect is on K Streets between 12th and 13th.

Gervasoni’s Food & Spirits
Piccadilly Deli & Sandwich Shop
Right in the heart of Downtown Modesto. Delicious meats cut fresh daily along an all you can eat salad bar. Address: 941 10th St. Modesto - Phone # 523-0748
By Tasha Williams Gervasoni’s Food & Spirits has been a staple in Modesto California for years! This lovely and picturesque restaurant, nestled in and tucked tight, down at the end of McHenry Avenue, is a place that you do not want to pass up! Mother/Daughter co-owners, Rosalie Clark and Serena Sisson took over the restaurant in 2012. At that time, it was located in downtown Modesto. However, five years later, in 2017, they relocated to 5801 McHenry Avenue. They now have a brand new look, with the exception of the original bar that they brought with them from the previous location. The old bar adds a touch of nostalgia. There is a banquet area where parties are held and very soon, the patio will be open. No doubt, many reservations will be made for hosting private parties outside. Now let’s get to the most important business at hand - The food! Oh, what a delight! I could say I was “lucky” to sit down and feast on my 20 oz. ribeye steak, partnered with french fries and fresh zucchini. But “lucky” is the wrong word choice. I wasn’t “lucky” at all . . . . . . I was “BLESSED”! Before the steak even hit the tip of my tongue, I knew it was going to be delicious! How, you ask? How was I so sure of myself? The answer was simple. When I first placed my fork into the steak and began to carve it with my knife, I could feel the tender juiciness of the center. Honestly, I could barely take the intense standoff between my right hand and my taste buds. I knew this steak would not disappoint, and I was right! With each bite, flavor erupted. It was as if a burst of perfectly seasoned lightening hit the roof of my roof of my mouth and landed like a soft and subtle pillow of heaven on my tongue. But wait, it didn’t stop there. You see, Rosalie went to culinary school, and that’s where she perfected her art when it comes to making all of these fabulous meals. Therefore, not only can she cook the steak and prime rib to perfection, but everything she touches, seems to be gold. There is a large selection of menu items to choose from at Gervasoni’s. You can take your pick from sandwiches, burgers, and various

chicken dishes. My personal favorite is the appetizer list. It consists of frog legs, fried oysters, pigs feet and lobster bites. But please, don’t just take my word for it. Regular customer, Mr. Ed Nunes of Nunes Dairy put it best. He happily chimed in on the conversation Rosalie, Serena and I were having and said, “I appreciate the owners, the atmosphere, and all of the food here, but there is nothing like the Lamb Shanks they serve!” Rosalie is also known for making the best cheesecakes in town! If you’ve got a cheesecake on your mind, you can bet your bottom dollar that she’s got you covered! The house favorite is her Banana Cheesecake. However, she makes cheesecakes in all of the following flavors as well: blueberry, apricot, and strawberry. Rosalie doesn’t stop there though. She also makes a key lime pie that is to die for!
August SPLASH 2018
Somehow, between bites of my meal, I managed to get our signature question into the conversation. I asked, “The Beatles or The Rolling Stones?” Rosalie replied, “I like both of the groups equally. The Stones were the wildest, hottest group ever and The Beatles always made fun and happy music.” Faithful customers who have frequented the restaurant for years now, have in no way slowed down when it comes to their visits. For them, this place, as Serena put it, “Feels like the old television show, Cheers!” Hip-hip-hooray and cheers to Gervasoni’s Food & Spirits! Long ago, Rosalie once made a promise to Serena, (who was tired of bartending elsewhere at the time), “Don’t worry! One day, we’ll own our own restaurant - Together.” It looks like Mom made good on her promise! As always: Let’s love our Modesto! Let’s embrace our Modesto! Let’s continue to spread our smiles in Modesto. C’mon Positive Peeps – IT’S WHERE WE LIVE!

August Movies I remember thinking that if Neil Young were here to witness this, he would have offered her a slot at his Bridge School Benefit concert then and there. Of all the musical moments I’ve curated, this is the one I recall most vividly and fondly - Effie Passero putting her own wailing
take on ‘Harvest Moon,’ which I asked her to do as part of a local supergroup, Valley Forged, assembled specifically to close out year three of MUMfest. I’ve heard this homegrown star do many amazing things with her voice and lyricism over the years, but none quite as stunning

as when she belted out that classic. That same night she also became the first artist I would sponsor to attend the Yosemite Songwriting Retreat, as the winner of our first songwriting contest. You may have seen Effie this year among the Top 24 of ‘American Idol.’ Her journey there began with an original song audition, and I’d like to think that Modesto Unplugged & YSR had our own small part to play in sharpening her career. Effie returns to NorCal this month to headline a fundraiser concert for the 2018 Yosemite Songwriting Retreat. Friday 8/10, head down to Sierra Meadows in Ahwahnee for a real fabulous evening. Dinner will be served at 6, with an open mic starting at 6:30 and the main concert at 7, which also features sets by Retreat directors Gail Dreifus and Adam Burns. Tickets are $10 advance; more info at www.yosemitesongwriting.com. We had great fun at the Modesto Unplugged World Music Jam last month, with a meshing of musical elements from India, Sweden, Latin America and more. The jam is back for round two on Tuesday 8/21, 7-9 PM back at the Barkin’ Dog Grill. This month’s special guests will be the N.Wanda Trio, on tour from Japan. They’re a groovy group with keyboard, guitar & bass, and you’re welcome to come make music alongside them. If you have some cool and exotic instruments & percussion, we’d love for you to jump in. The best of the rest for August: MPA stages ‘Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical’ from 8/11-8/19 at the Gallo Center. The cast list includes local ‘Roosevelt’s Got Talent’ winner Kalea Jackson; and soprano star Christine Capsuto, a veteran of more than one of the finest music series in town. Info/tickets at www.modestoperformingarts. com. Saturday 8/11, Nashville country songwriters Brinley Addington and Emily Hackett appear at the Denair Gaslight Theater for a special benefit show. Find more info on that at 209-664-9514. Friday 8/17, Modesto’s premiere Cajun players, the BluesBox Bayou Band, are featured at Music In The Plaza on 10th St. from 7-9pm.

I am a part of a program called the Modesto Leos Club; we are basically the younger brother of the Modesto Lions Club. We are hoping to recruit some teenagers to join us in making the community a better place. We meet only once a month and do fun activities. The main reason our group formed was so we could help out people in need. We used “flocking” as a way to fundraise for our projects; Flocking is when people pay us to stick pink plastic flamingos in their friend’s yard. Using the $150 we earned from flocking; we went to Wal-Mart and bought kids who were less fortunate school supplies.
nations throughout the world. Last time we cleaned over 2,000 glasses. We hung out, listened to music, and laughed while being able to help someone see better. The se are just some of the wonderful opportunities you will have by joining the Leos Club. We also would appreciate donations of good condition prescription glasses. Did you know 153 million people worldwide are By of Evecorrective Oberlander in need lens, but don’t have them. Lions and Leos clubs collect millions of eye glasses each year. If you would like to try Leos out to see if you want to be a part of it then you are more than welcome to join us for a day. We have a membership drive May 9th at Modesto Bowl. If you are interested in participating, donating, joining, or trying out Leos, call Karin at (209) 595-3202 for more information.

This is a wonderful event in Modesto and the track is lined with really incredible booths where teams show their support, sell crafts and food to raise funds. There is an amazing luminary walk at dusk that is mazingly powerful. Please consider supporting this event, support a team or just make a donation. www.relayforlife.org and then type in Modesto, CA

INTER Joe Traina and the Fruityard By Chris Murphy
The Traina family has long been synonymous with locally grown fruit and vegetables. Long timers know their Traina dried food that’s produced in Patterson, California and many know the great prime rib and the Sunday brunches at the Fruit Yard east of Modesto. Over the years, the Fruit Yard has grown into an event center and now they make their boldest move yet by opening a new amphitheater that will host 3,500 people and will present concerts and performances by top-flight entertainment as well as the ability to host local performances. Many music fans remember the B93 Summerfest shows that were held there and for nearly 30 years, the Fruit Yard has been home to Back to Graffiti, that showcased Little Richard, the Beach Boys, The Isley Brothers and many others. This is an exciting time and Joe Traina has been working round the clock to bring this new facility to life for the gala opening with Amy Grant on August 24. We were able to tour the fast-rising stage canopy, the grassy hill for blanket seating and all of the new back stage support areas. These should be some of the best services that will be a great draw to touring artists. Parking should be pretty easy and best of all, this is only a few minutes east of Modesto. Joe and his brother Willie Traina own and operate the family’s Traina Foods that was incorporated in 1976 and they started the Fruit Yard in 1977. We caught up with Joe during the construction and wanted to know how this is all developing and what the future brings and also became intrigued with something called a “Fruiton”. I guess we will have to wait for that. ModestoView: The Fruit Yard has been an important part of our culture for quite a while, what does it mean to you? Joe Traina: I have been at it so long, it has become my identity. MV: Traina continues to innovate in foods like the Sun Dried Ketchup, what do you think about the opportunities for food production in our area? JT: Farm to fork, it’s great. We’ve come out with our own BBQ dipping sauce and also a Fruiton (not a cruton) and we are developing new and exiting new food products you will in the near future.

MV: Did you ever see yourself being in the event business when you were growing up? JT: Yes, I thought I would become a country western singer. MV: There has been a long history of events at the Fruit Yard, what was your favorite memory? JT: Cooking and eating ribs with Mary Wilson of the Supremes after she performed to a sell out crowd at the Fruit Yard. MV: Back to Graffiti was started in 1994, what is the future of Back to Graffiti now that you have an amphitheater? JT: There are so many possibilities, but we really want to provide bigger and better entertainment. MV: Do you have a wish list on what and who would you like to book at the Fruit Yard? JT: Yes I do have a wish list, but you will have to wait and see. MV: Beyond concerts, what would you like to see at the Fruit Yard?
August SPLASH 2018
JT: We would like to present more theatre, comedy, church services and community events. MV: Is your whole family involved in the Traina businesses? Over the years, everybody has participated in one way or another. JT: If you had a wish for the greater Modesto area, what would it be? People being more caring and kind to each other. MV: Who do people connect with The Fruit Yard to book the facility? Go on our website at www.thefruityard.com and contact our office JT: Our signature question: Beatles or Stones? Stones. Everybody needs a little rock and roll in their lives.

Chilly Dogs and Cats Have you ever walked barefoot on the black asphalt in the middle of the summer? Ouch! Remember to always walk your dogs and cats early in the morning or later in the evening so that they don’t burn their paws or overheat. Dehydration is something to keep in mind, too! So make sure you have water ready for your furry friends when you get back home.
FORE!! Take a walk along Dry Creek in East La Loma Park and you’re sure to see poles with chains and wonder what on Earth they are for! Fear not! This is Modesto’s very own Disc Golf Course! Like traditional golf, there are 18 holes (9 easier holes by the tennis courts and 9 more challenging ones further west) and all you need is a frisbee and maybe a snack or two to keep yourself going. Grab some friends and a water bottle and we will see you out there!

Schools are providing less each year and Teachers just can not keep up with their student’s needs. Here are a few great resources to help those in need start off the new school year ready. Please let us know if we are missing any and we will share them online. August 3rd 6 pm, Modesto Parks & Recreation Department and Modesto City Schools Stude nt, Parent and Community Support Services are once again teaming up with the “Welcome Back to S chool Backpack Giveaway.” Taking place at Marshall Park, the event features an evening with health, safety, and community resources information from area agencies and organizations. It will also feature entertainm ent, guest speakers and children’s activities. A backpack giveaway will be featured. Parents must be present with children. For those who are in the giving mood, August 11th 10 am-3 pm Center for Human Services is hosting a BackPack Drive happening in the Walmart parking lot 2225 Plaza Parkway in Modesto. So please drop off a backpack or two for those in need. Stanislaus County Office of Education, Student Support Services division works with Stanislaus County school districts’ McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Liaison to provide backpacks to students in need. If your child, or a child you know, is in need of a backpack please contact the local scho ol district liaison your school site for more assistance. bchandler@ceres.k12.ca.us zamora.h@monet.k 12.ca.us ebeltran@stancoe.org In Turlock, there will be a Backpack supply Drive Thru in 10 East Parking Lot. Accepting drop-offs of paper, binders, pencils, notebooks, folders and other supplies to fill 1,000 backpacks on August 3rd 7 am to 7 pm. Supplies will be given to the City of Turlock, United Samaritans and the Westside Ministries to be distributed. I have said it before, and I will say it again, for a “geek” it is a great time to be alive. When I was younger we were lucky to have one or at most two movies released in a year, we watched reruns of Star Trek and Batman on TV or played D&D. Now just about every month there is a movie released, there are shows for all fandoms on TV and Pop Culture Conventions happening just about every month in our backyard. Modesto has two great comic book stores Invincible on Orangeburg and Modesto Comic on McHenry behind P.Wexfofds; there is also Fantastic Collectibles in Manteca. If you are into gaming check out Utopia Games on Tully and Area 51 on Coffee Rd in Modesto. Speaking of Conventions, StocktonCon is back, taking place at the Stockton Arena on August 18th & 19th. StocktonCon is the crown jewel of Local Conventions, two days 15,000 plus people and so much fun. One of the things that makes StocktonCon a little different is the addition of Pro-Wrestlers, this year meet Sting and Christian along with a few others. Stockton always has fantastic guests and this year is no exception, meet actors John Noble, Rachel Leigh

MAMA MAMA The Choice Is Yours By Middagh Goodwin Modesto is fortunate to have so many talented performers in the area. Over the last few months, the Modesto Area Music Association has sifted through hundreds of nominees to narrow down the up and comers, the grinders and the acts that keep on rockin’. We have reached out to venues, promoters, previous winners and fans to find out who we should be paying attention too. Now it is almost time for you to Vote for who will be the winners of the 2018 Modesto Area Music Awards. Voting will start on August 15th and go until Midnight on October 14th. Remember you only get one Vote so make sure you go through all the Categories from Alt-Indie to Youth Bands. I always recommend going out and catching as many of the nominees as you possibly can to make the most informed decision. Quite often local venues will do MAMAnee showcases to make things easier for you to see several in one night. Tuesday, October 16th the nominees and their guest will all converge on the historic State Theatre, and the winners will be announced.
The show is hosted by Chris Murphy and Chris Ricci, and as always there will be live performances from the pool of MAMAnees. There will be special guest presenters, city and county representatives, radio personalities and more who will be paired up with some of last years winners in each category to help pass the torch. The ceremony is always streamed live and fans and families will not want to miss watching the world over at www.modestoview.com.So keep your eyes peeled for your favorites to announce their nominations and help them take home the elusive Car Hop Trophy. We are encouraging all nominees(actually all performers) to set up a Plink account. Plink is a new resource that’s goal is to help you play more and in turn, get paid more. Modesto is
one of the beta test areas so you all will be able to get in on the ground floor. Here is your link to Plink, www.plinkyou.com/ modesto, a donation to the MAMA scholarship fund will be made for every completed account. Over the last few years, the Modesto Area Music Association has worked hard at pairing those in need with great local performers. We have curated Music in the Plaza, the local stage at the Stanislaus County Fair and PatioFest just to name a few. We are currently working on several scholarships for either Valley Music Institute or Modesto Sound. Our goal is to support and help build a better musical community. Thanks again to everyone who goes out on a regular basis and supports live performances and the venues, bars, cafes and restaurants that give them a space to play.

The Best Month of Summer
Summertime Blues
by Patty Castillo Davis

After months of sweltering conditions we finally feel a tempering in the weather and a swell in music festivals. You know what I mean, dirty feet, mosquito bites, stringed instruments like you’ve never seen before, 11 part harmonies, smoke for days and memories. A whole lot of local players will be giving their all on these stages. River Ranch Music Festival 8/17-19, Snelling River Music Festival 8/18, and the Strawberry Music Festival-Fall 8/309/3 will satiate your music/campout/tailgate/ party hankering. Sunday Breakfast Music at DEVA has a GIANT lineup of favorites packed into August, reservations are suggested. House Hosts Tim and Patty 8/5, One Man Band Nathan Ignacio 8/12, the long awaited return of Doug Robinett, Marirose and Patty Castillo Davis in a combined collaboration 8/19 and favorite chanteuse Mattea Overstreet on 8/26. Friday, August 17 Rubber Lizard will hold a show at Deva with The Cazadores. Doors 7pm and show time is 8pm. This is an all ages show with a $5 gate fee. The Third Thursday Artwalk venues host music for every taste. August 16, the Modesto View stage at 11th and J will feature US-
4Love, fresh from their cd release on August 3 coinciding with their appearance at the Valley Talent Project. We send best wishes and good juju to our great friend and Songwriter Josh Rosenblum as he moves into the next phase of his career with a relocation to Southern California. The great work he has laid the foundation for will not fade away. Mattea Overstreet will carry on the Wine Down Wednesdays at the Redwood Café and Jesse Tracy will host the open mic at P. Wexfords on Mondays. The Cow Track in Oakdale brings back their open mic every other Wednesday at 8 pm with Ffej Moore at the helm as Host. The Modesto area music nonprofit DB Project, a proven and transparent organization whose mission is to help underserved youth has been painstakingly working for a year to provide shoes for students. On Saturday, August 25 they will be partnering with Mitchell’s Harley Davidson to raise money to purchase shoes for back to school. The event is FREE and the BBQ meal is only $5 a plate. Music will be donated by The Patty Castillo Davis Band and Gary Gervase & Kickstart Blues Band with a promise of some smooth collabos and a grooving good time. The party is from 10 am to 2pm. Db project is a 501c3 tax exempt organization-tax ID# 81-4785136.
Hello everyone, the dog days of summer are here again, and for some crazy reason, that means there is a ton of fun stuff going on. In fact, there is so much to do that I hope you look at the calendar because I don’t have room to talk about it all, so I am just going to give you the highlights. Kicking things off with a bang is Rob Hill making his West Side Theater debut on the 3rd. Rob calls his music Jazzy Blue but, I would call it SOUL music. His brings so much energy and leaves it all on the stage for you. So don’t miss this one. The Hotel Leger is continuing their Summer Blues Series this month and through September. Every Sunday afternoon, with some great acts including yours truly with the Cryin’ Shame. On the 10th you have to check out the Blues and Brews fest at Hutchins Street Square in Lodi. This year Featuring a great lineup including Shad Harris and the Groovinators and Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood as well as several other acts you won’t want to miss. On the 12th you can see Gary Gervase and Kickstart Blues at Stewart & Jasper’s in Mchenry Village for an Alzheimer’s fundraiser. Great band and a great cause. That starts at 4 and then you can head straight over to the Barkin Dog to
CliliYi 01 MODESTO
catch the Bourbon Street Blues Band later in the evening. On the 17th you have a few good options but, I’m going to recommend you head over to see Bill Clifton’s Chicken and Whiskey Band at Valley Brewing in Stockton. Bill is a founding member of the MAMA award-winning band the MOFO Party Band and one hell of a player. This concert series is a ton of fun, and I’m sure you will have a blast. I will be back at St’ Stan’s on the 22nd with the Poorhouse Millionaires hosting my monthly jam. The last few months have been great, so if you like blues, it’s a great way to see us all at once. The DB Project is back at it raising money to provide Shoes to kids in need with a show they are calling Bikes and Blues for Shoes at Mitchell’s Modesto Harley Davidson. This show is featuring Patty Castillo-Davis Band and Gary Gervase and the Kickstart Blues Band, and it runs from 10 am to 2 pm. DB Project is an excellent local charity and one that is worth supporting 100%. As always friends don’t forget every Thursday you can check out David Dow’s Open Jam at the Barking Dog, or you can be a part of the show with Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood at Stockton’s Garlic Brother for the Blues Jam. I hope to see you guys out at a show.

JAZZ If you luv music you’re gonna love this by Eric Benson Okay it is hot, hot, hot with no reprieve in sight. Stay hydrated and come out from the airconditioned safety zone when you can. The heat is great for the tomatoes but not for us. I used to cry about the heat in the east bay when it hit 80 degrees, Okay I will stop whining as the weather is gonna do what it is gonna do, the best we can do is run for cover. And hopefully the fires will be contained and we can all breathe easy. On to the business as hand! One of our music community, friend and great Jazz drummer Rootie Marino has passed, RIP. Rootie and Cindy his wife ran their jazz club in Merced and brought in a lot of great music over the years and Rootie played with a lot of great players over the years including John Wyatt - Piano, Marti Martinez - Sax, Neal Griffin - Sax, John Ady - Bass, Mario Flores Latin - Percussion, Dave Wallace - Piano, John Albano - guitar, Carlos Caro - Latin Percus-
sion, Joel Nixon on bass and vocals and many others. Rootie was a great drummer and ever better human being, no matter what he was going through in life, on the band stand he played his heard out with great musicianship and humor. He had a big heard and a lot more soul. He was a musician who loved and encouraged other players, always a team player, when not gigging he would come down to gigs in the area with Chris Cain, Dave Mathews, and the Blue Monday Jam and always enjoy others playing and encourage the younger musicians. He will be missed. Blue Monday Party returns to the Barkin’ dog August 13th to the Barkin’ Dog Grill with special guest Cliff Payne once again and Saxophonist Darnell Robinson. Hosting the jam is house band Ultra Lounge, Johnny Valdes guitar, Tim Allen bass, vocals, Dave Hawks on drums, Horns Kevin Marin, and Marty Martinez, and John Burt Sax, Dave Dow and you’re truly Eric Benson on Keys and Pat Governor on organ. We will be playing a whole lot of Rock and groove music, Blues, Latin, Jazz, Latin, and a lit-
tle of everything else. Call the Dog for reservations: 572-2341. If you play, come on down and sit in with the best musicians in the area, or to listen and dance, it’s gonna’ be smoking! Darnel has a new album out in the smooth Jazz groove format, so come down and check it out! And the Barkin’ Dog Grill, one of my favorite family friendly venues continues with some live music coming at you for August; 4th Craig and Dave Rock, 10th Valley Jazz Company, 11th Bourbon street Blue Band with Izzy Alvarado, 13th Blue Monday with Eric Benson with guest Clif Payne Jazz vocalist and Sax extraordinaire Darnel Robinson, 18th Ernie Bucio Little big band, 21st Aaron Rowan showcase, , 24th Blues with Gary Gervase , 25th David Dow & Friends, 31st Blade Runner Band. And every single Thursday Dave Dow pianist Extraordinaire hosts a Thursday Jazz Jam session. Come back out for Third Thursday Art Walk 5 to 9:00 PM for some great art and music in the downtown! Lowdown on the jam session in the downtown: Queen Bean Sundays open mike night also in an all age environment. So take some time out to hear some live music and the arts of our own town as well this month, think globally and act locally. All the best, peace out! FIT Fitness Don’ts by Efren Martinez
Last month I turned 50 years young and I’m the healthiest and happiest I’ve ever been in my life. It’s taken me 15 years of a dedicated healthy lifestyle that included a strict diet and long hours of fitness to be fit at 50. Sure I’ve had a few fitness injuries and fractured bones from training for various runs and Triathlons but it goes along with the territory if your going to be a competitive Athlete of any kind. Oh sure I still ache at times like anyone who’s put in so many long hours of extreme fitness. Outside of that I’m the kind of healthy man that my doctor tells me that would put him out of business and he’s OK with that. Friends I have good news for you. You too can become a healthier you at any age! As many of you know I once weighted in over twice as much as I do now and smoked like a freight train till the age of 34. If
you smoke, you can repair your lungs. Just quit! If you’re overweight and have health issues, you can lose the weight and get healthier over time. Our bodies and the time we spend taking care of them is the most God-given blessing we have. No I’m not saying you have to spend vast amounts of time working out nor do you have to live a life of eating nothing but healthy food that taste like cardboard. Well not unless you want to. No matter what age you are right now you should give it some serious thought. If the idea of living and enjoying a retired life without pain, pills and spending loads of money in doctor visits sounds good to you then educate yourself to the fullest on how you can reach this lovely goal at whatever age you’d like to retire. As for me, I’ll keep racing for the finish line for a continued healthy and happy lifestyle.
A beginners workout • 20 bodyweight squats. • 10 push-ups. • 20 walking lunges. • 10 dumbbell rows (using a gallon milk jug) • 15-second plank. • 30 jumping Jacks. • 3 x 10 Squats would look like this: 10 Squat
COMEDY Hello, hello, hello Hello, hello, hello. It’s August, it’s hot, I’m over summer and want my hair dry. You too? Go to a show--air conditioning is included with admission. Might I suggest you check out an open mic? Open mics are a place where anyone can show up and try comedy and established comics work new material. Two years ago I burned up the road and gave up sleep to go to the Bay and Sacramento. Now, 209 comics can stay close to home. There are monthly open mics in Patterson at Francesca’s run by Jeff Moreno, Stockton at Finnegan’s run by Saul Trujillo and Modesto at St. Stan’s Brewing. Weekly we have the Clarion run by Jimmie Menezes and the old standby Queen Bean every Sunday in Modesto. Check out the events section for details. Did I leave your event out? Find me and let me know. After I started my story last month I found out there are people reading my column and some of them aren’t even related to me. Last month we introduced our narrator and their love interest and mentioned how they were brought together by their Aunt Carol who wasn’t really their aunt, so it’s not creepy. This month, The Meet.
by Felicia Aleman Self-serve gas stations are not for everyone. There’s a lot that can happen. At this point, you’d expect examples of gas station disasters, but I’m not that kind of narrator. Use your imagination. Why should I have to do all the work? It could have been a day like any other, with your narrator pulling in with smoke under the hood, fumes in the tank and head in the clouds, but today the narrator decided to be a mechanic. To most, cars are a mystery and opening a car hood is losing a Pandora’s box of questions. I wonder what that does? Is the engine supposed to be that dirty? That probably needs fluid, I wonder what kind. Your narrator is no exception and foolishly removed the radiator cap. Flipping the release on the radiator cap sent a geyser-worthy fountain of boiling hot antifreeze into the air. The narrator barely registered the severity of this error until she was shoved away by the shell of a man who would then begin to yell at her. “Hey lady, what were you thinking? You just squirted radiator juice all over my car. Oh crud, you ok?”

ALL AGES Happy Leo Season
“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” -William Butler Yeats Happy Leo season! With the Sun in Leo, there are feelings of independence, expressiveness, and playfulness! These are the perfect tools for beginning the school year. You can use your elevated independence to spend time on your own, studying and preparing for classes. During my High School years I spent a lot of time at The Queen Bean and local libraries for quiet studying! If you ever need to escape reality, read a book in one of Modesto’s peaceful parks (we have so many). My mother recently bought a
By Leia Johnson comfy chair and small carpet from a garage sale and set up a reading area in our backyard! This could be a fun project for your family to do. You can be expressive by signing up for art classes at The Chartreuse Muse, starting a garden (Westurf Nursery is locally owned and has great options), or immersing yourself in a new subject! If you are interested in the planets and how they affect your daily life/self, check out cafeastrology.com! As for the necessary playful aspect of our lives, you could go on a hour-long horseback ride in Pinecrest for only $25! I recently did this excursion and it was incredible! The horses were gentle, the trail had beautiful views and a diverse terrain, and our host was informative, funny and helpful! Check out http://aspenmeadowpackstation.com for all of the information you need! I am sad to say that this will be my last Modesto View article ever. I have had such an influential 5 years writing for this magazine, but I am happy to announce that I will be passing it on to my younger sister, Sofia! We are two very different individuals, so get ready for fresh ideas filling up your school year! As
for me, I will be moving to Chico this month to attend the CSU with a major in Journalism. I’m extremely excited for my new adventure, and I am thankful for how much the Modesto community helped me grow and thrive.
ZEN The Essence of Learning by Mary Layton Our body benefits from a variety of physical activities, i.e. T’ai Chi, swimming, walking and bicycling. But in order for our mind to stay sharp and healthy we need to give it some variety and new input as well. When we exercise our memory we are improving our mental faculties. Anytime we give our mind something new to chew on we are feeding it. When I learn something new I feel a sense of renewal and joy. Suddenly I feel that my imagination is expanding and I am having fun. To learn a new language for example, makes me feel like a new person. It changes my perspective because that language expresses things differently from what I am used to. The sound of it has a different music and rhythm. My face expression and hand movements change. My tongue gets to exercise and move differently.
Recently I started to learn to say a few words in Italian. What a beautiful language! How cool it is to say to my friend : “Tanto piacere!”(Nice to meet you) And he says to me : “Piacere mio.”(Nice to meet you too) We can learn something new or we can learn to do what we have been doing all along, except better. We can learn how to paint, garden, play an instrument, learn how to sing, dance, sew or cook. Why don’t we learn more? We may have all kinds of reasons. Bottom line is that learning new things can combat self pity, mood swings and depression. Learning something sends you off on a journey of self-discovery. You may find out that you need more patience, that you need to learn how to concentrate and not compare yourself with others. Go people and learn something new, learn more! So far this year’s Music in the Plaza has had consistently great crowds, and we have seen some of the area’s best musicians performing every Friday in Downtown Modesto. GO DOWNTOWN MODESTO - OPEN MIC NIGHT
Traditionally Open Mics have served to be both an incubator for performers of all style and an opportunity for established performers to try out new material. Most open mics will have an established artist(many of which got their start on the same stage) hosts or close out the show. Are you looking to get a little stage time or just see some new acts on a small stage? If so you have several options from the Queen Bean every Sunday nights at 7 pm and P Wexford’s every Monday at 8 pm. A few newer ones include Tuesday nights at Ralston’s Goat and Thursday at Shooters Pub both at 8 pm. The Cowtrack which used to host a weekly open mic is once again hosting, for now, every other Wednesday, the 5th and 19th this month. The second Tuesday of each month you can practice your comedy chops at St Stan’s and last Thursday every month at the Outpost Saloon in Waterford. So why not grab that guitar or dust off your banjo and hop on stage, who knows you might be the next MAMA winner.
