tude to the American Legion Post 74 for the honor of being named “Citizen of the Year”. This is something that was truly unexpected and it is a recognition that means a lot to me and my family, but most importantly, it shows the value of teamwork and friendship. No one alone can make a difference without the support of family and friends who share goals and dreams. I am so very grateful for the people in my life that share some of these crazy visions

RIP Gary Duncan
We lost a legendary performer last month. Finding fame globally as one of the founding members of Quicksilver Messenger Service, with amazing hits like Fresh Air, Gary Duncan, formerly Gary Grubb from Ceres started his music career in the local band The Ratz, and they made quite a name around town and then in 1965 after a quick stint in The Brogues, formed Quicksilver. There performances at Monterey Pop were quite electric and they helped define the bay area sound. Their album Happy Trails is # 185 on Rolling Stone’s greatest albums of all time. Gary performed and toured in and out of Quicksilver until his passing at the age of 72. The Ratz were an important part of Modesto music history that lead to great things for rock and roll. and believe that we can all make our community better by thinking bigger, aiming higher and building better connections and friendships. Deepest thanks to my friend Al Menshew for always showing that you can get involved, lend a hand and accomplish things and have a great time doing it. He is truly an inspiration. Thanks also to Dick Hagerty, last years’ recipient for his wonderful column in the Modesto Bee. If you haven’t read it, you can check it out here. https://www.modbee.com/ opinion/opn-columns-blogs/communitycolumns/article232422542.html Thanks to the team at Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group. I am fortunate to have the support of my company to be able to get involved in our community. Most of all, I want to thank my family for always supporting and participating and most of all my wife Rebecca, for without her, my life would be so different. Thank you all so much. What is crazy is that it is back to school already. I mean really, August? But this is where we are, and it’s time to get back at it. Education is so very important and education means so many different things. We have a very diverse population and abilities and we are working hard to make sure students are ready for the future, a future that needs to include more good jobs here in our area. There are so many opportunities to get a unique public school education and that’s why we wanted to feature our Stanislaus County Office of Education Superintendent Scott Kuykendall. I hope you find this interview as interesting as I did. You know that ModestoView is all about the food and drink in our area and we are very proud to be showcasing the new Fina Restaurant by John Surla in Ripon. John was our very first chef interview when
I started printing ModestoView back in 2006. It is so great to see what John has accomplished and we celebrate this new venture. But what is really important, is that our community work together, support our locally owned business and champion our locally created ideas and make this all work together to make a better community. There are good ideas in many places. We need to embrace the creative thought, and put it all to work to create the place we call home and make it exciting for both our own citizens and visitors. That’s why the ModestoView mission has never wavered and still remains to “Serve Civic Pride Daily”. Our ViewCrew, that scours the region for the most interesting happenings each day and in each monthly issue, is really an amazing group of people that really share this mission. The more we love our city, the more the word will get out and everyone else will be in on the secret. I know we can do this. Finally, I hope you come out to see my band Third Party rock the Music in the Plaza on Aug 2 and thanks to those that are coming to the Citizen of the Year event on August 3rd. I am thankful to all that go the extra mile, create the next idea and then bring us together to make it happen. Best to you all, Chris Murphy Founder and Publisher, ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

WOODSTOCK VIEW
By Chris Murphy
Woodstock changed music
forever in August 1969.
One million people descended on Max Yasgur’s farm in Woodstock NY. The promoters had planned on 50-100,000 but as the gates opened, 400,000 were there and people streamed in, over the fences, overwhelming the facilities to see some of the most memorable music performances ever. This was a bold plan and the promoters ended up upside down and as the crowds grew, but still had to keep peace and convince all of the acts to go on, despite the conditions, people and the rain. 50 years later, Woodstock stands alone as the greatest music festival of all time. Artie Kornfeld was one of the founders and promoters and in one of the more memorable moments in the film, is shown trying to convince Pete Townshend of the Who to go on as the festival unraveled.
If you have not watched the film, it is an essential view. Watching Jimi Hendrix play his much delayed set on a Monday rainy morning to a half full crowd. I had the pleasure and honor of meeting Artie. We played golf, enjoyed cooking dinner and in what is one of my favorite experiences, watch Woodstock with Artie’s commentary. I learned more about music in that session than at any other single time in my life. To hear the real life, and in many cases different from the legend, experience of being behind the scenes of Woodstock from the man that put the show on, was nothing less than amazing. Artie is still high energy, connected and still a driving force in music and promotions. Thanks to my friends, Ken McCall and Gary Granger for this great opportunity and experience. Yield to crossing guards and be aware of your surroundings on the road. 4. Yield to school buses. Don’t try to overtake the bus or go around it. If a bus has a flashing, alternating red light, you are legally required to stop and wait for the light to turn off. 5. Give yourself extra time. 1. Make sure to practice crosswalk safety. Parents tell your kids to cross streets only at crosswalks or stoplights and to always look both ways before crossing the street. 2. Use the buddy system(it has worked for generations). Make sure you have the contact information of your child’s walking buddy and know their route. If a child is under 10 an adult should walk with them. 3. Make sure you wear proper bike safety equipment. Make sure you wear your helmets, light colored clothes. Parents also make sure the lights and reflective devices are in place.
Back to School Modesto August 12
What?? Is it that time already? Aug 12 is the big back to school day for Modesto City Schools. Be safe on the roads out there. Most of the kids in Modesto will be going back to school earlier than ever this year. The new school clothes, the reams of binder paper, the calculators will be n the backpacks as kids go back in search of higher education. Donate to your teacher’s need list and make sure that our kids have every chance to me successful. Backpacks including paper, pens, and glue are just a few items that you can donate to help a child be successful in school. By providing backpacks for school you are giving a child the opportunity to walk into a classroom with confidence, the tools they need to be successful in the classroom and a feeling of belonging with their classmates! Sierra Vista Children’s Center is distributing to many of the children that in the variety of programs/services they provide such as Sierra Vista’s family resource centers, clinics throughout the County, non-public schools, mentoring programs, and foster care. ART VIEW Back to School By Jim Christiansen August is near back to school shop-
ping and end of summer time. Third Thursday Art Walk comes up middle of the month August 15, and a good time to take a saunter downtown to the various art walk venues, and make a deal with local artists on a piece of original art. Have met some new artists on the scene, including some in their teens who have taken the suggestion to check out the art walk map, talk to other artists, find out who you talk to in order to show, and get out there with their art. Besides art walk, you can also get in to events like DoMo Market, the Black Arts Market at Queen Bean, and give it a go. Peer Recovery Art Project is back in the mix, with recent concert with art downtown at 1010 Tenth, and part of the Blues Extravaganza show August 24 at State Theatre. Follow them on Facebook or check out my “Artists of Modesto” page to keep up with calls for artists and regional events. July Art Walk featured Christmas in July at Dragonfly Art for Life where workshop in Story Stones happens August 3 and 10. Tri-Chromatic Gallery’s show The Fool’s Journey by Scott Woodman, and the unusual assemblage of artists at Still Smoking. Carolyn Huff Gallery is often overlooked over at 13th and K, so drop in. Every so often, I get to help an artist hang their first solo show. Got to do that at Barkin Dog with current featured Artist Vann Thompson, who has some very nice work up on the five display boards, such you might be surprised meeting him, as a 15-year-old student in his first
show. His work will be up until August 15, when the interesting drawings of Mike Haack go up as the featured artist in August. Chartreuse Muse will open a new show “Tiny Anomalies” with artist print exchange during Art Walk. Fall class sign ups in painting and ceramics open in August. Check in with the Muse for more details. Mistlin Gallery features its Autumn Art Festival juried show this month, with the big fundraiser gala August 24. The Gala is $30 for tickets, and includes food, music with Mattea Overstreet, silent auction and awards ceremony. This should be a quality show, and generally a fun event to attend. End of the month, Central West Ballet dance in the gallery in production of Rat Pack in Revue, August 31. For both events, check with the gallery, and Central California Art Association/ Mistlin Gallery event pages for ticket information. Mistlin will also be offering classes for kids and adults for Fall, space sometimes limited. Carnegie Arts Center will present Yosemite Renaissance 34 from August 8 through October 6, 2019. The show will display will be 60 works by 59 artists, interpreting the majesty of Yosemite National Park and the Sierra region. Opening reception will be held on Thursday, August 8 from

Renegade
Home Brewing Supply
By Bill Coffey
Leaning back in a plush leather captain’s chair and sipping on a home-brewed light lager, I’m quickly transported back to the early days of homebrewing. The Renegade Home Brewing Supply store in Turlock is a friendly, organized, and extremely clean facility where individuals feel very welcome and at home. Family owned and operated by Luke and Megan Henslick, the store has earned a well-deserved reputation for going beyond customer’s expectations. To say they would take the shirt off their own backs to help a customer is not much of a stretch. I personally witnessed a customer come in the store during this interview, on the one day that they are “technically” closed. The item the customer was hoping to pick up was out of stock at the moment so Luke offered the customer his own personal version of the item. “We want customers to feel like family and friends,” Luke said matter-of-factly. The store has humble beginnings as The New Bern Home Brew Supply store from New Bern, N.C. When they took over the operations of the shop in 2013, the culture and growth of homebrewing in North Carolina were very different and considerably smaller than that of the California scene. Luke was involved in Federal Law Enforcement at the time and the opportunity to move closer to extended family in California presented itself a couple of years later. Soon after relocating to Turlock, the Hemslicks pondered the possibility of opening a new shop and received such positive feedback that they pursued the opportunity shortly thereafter. Around May 2017, the Renegade Homebrew Supplies Store was conceived. Located in a small shopping area on Monte Vista Avenue in Turlock, the store carries the essentials needed to brew beer at home, make wine, mead, kombucha and soda. The Henslicks create kits for begin-
8
ners and advanced brewers. The formulas for the kits are often based upon successful recipes the couple produced on their state of the art brewing system. Customers are encouraged to taste a variety of the shop’s very own creations that are available on draught. Surrounded by comfortable chairs and couches, it is common for patrons to sit, relax, have homebrew. and engage in a variety of topics from hobbies to family life, and more. “Beer is the great unifier.” Megan states.” People from all walks of life can sit, enjoy some beer and have engaging conversations.” If the thought of producing your own beer at home is intriguing, yet intimidating, then you may wish to take one of the shop’s Saturday classes. At this time, Renegade offers 2 class levels, including “An Intro to Brewing, and “All Grain Brewing.” The emphasis of the classes is to provide background on ingredients and techniques necessary to produce quality homebrew. Special care is given to explain sanitation and it’s the role in the process. Another great source of information and comradery are the local homebrew clubs. Central Valley Brewers Guild and The Brewin’s Clubs are just two of the local clubs you may encounter at Renegade. So, what does the future hold for the Henslicks? They are excited about the possibility of expanding soon. Luke and Megan are planning to eventually brew on their system and have those beers available for purchase on draught and in growlers to go. “Nothing really big. We aren’t looking to distribute.” The possibility of moving from their current location as they grow remains an option. The couple says that many of the local commercial breweries have been very supportive and helpful as the explore their expansion goals. In the meantime please support this locally owned and operated family business. In their accommodating fashion, they have also been known to make home deliveries if you are not able to get to the physical store.

A Time To Perform in August By Kaye Osborn & the ViewCrew The dog days of August have arrived.
There is still a lot of good theater to see and embrace. Season subscriptions are available with many theatrical companies locally and out-of-town. You can get more for your buck! There are different ways to access and enhance a live performance. You can borrow a listening device with allows you to set your own volume for hearing the performers plus it blocks out annoying conversations or candy wrappers. Some shows have open captioning and even personal rolling computers with the complete script. If a Sign Language interpreter is preferred, give the theater ample time to make those necessary arrangements. Personally, I like all three options. Now, let’s take a peek behind the curtains! CHEF VIEW
By Chris Murphy Photos by Michael J. Mangano
Fina by John Surla Fina is out of this world Our very first issue of ModestoView featured an up and coming Chef who was new to Modesto. We knew then that he would do great things. Chef John Surla has become one of Modesto’s leading culinary voices. His namesake Surla’s has become the standard of excellent cuisine and his Lola’s Bistro in Hilmar added a new range of flavors and now Fina in Ripon will be a game changer for regional dining. This is a true destination dining experience. I would be remiss in that this innovative circular design, does remind me of the Millennium Falcon. Coincidence. Maybe so. But the similarities end there and Fina is a new take on traditional fresh Italian cuisine. For those of you that are Surla’s regulars, something you won’t find at Fina is soy sauce. Nada, Zip. Zilch. But what you will find is an amazing array of fresh pastas, wood oven baked pizzas and sauces with imperfect textures, grilled meats and fish all prepared in an amazing glassed-in exhibition kitchen. John and I have known each
10
other a long time and early on learned that of his first gigs was at the premier Mondavi Restaurant in Disney’s California Adventure. Since then, John has dreamed about what his dream restaurant would be if he could start from scratch. “This is most definitely my dream space, and it turned out to be so beautiful and inspiring inside, that the food had to be over the top too”. He teamed up with the late Conrad Sanchez to design the innovative Fina. These original illustrations will be featured in the restaurant. The menu will have many favorites, and when asked about what should not be missed on a first visit to Fina, he replied “the fresh pasta. It is really amazing”. The food is light, flavorful, grilled and fresh with a new twist on Italian sauces and preparation. The ingredients are fresh and local from Rodin, Ratto & Cipponeri Farms, Stanislaus Foods, Sciabica Oils, and Fiscalini and Nicolau cheese and others. Have no fear as there are gluten free and low carb options too. Fina is a showcase of food preparation, with an exhibition kitchen, central bar and an ambience that takes you to a different place. Seating in the round offer so many different views and an open bar with big windows and a patio that is in shade every evening. It takes a lot to build a restaurant from scratch and bring it to life, and he has done it with local suppliers and builders, with beautiful lighting from Phillips in McHenry Vil-

UNPLUGGED VIEW It Ain’t Beethoven, But It Sure Bounces By Aaron Rowan
August Movies
“Jazz is the art of thinking out loud.” - Barbara Januszkiewicz If you mention the names Léa Freire or Amilton Godoy to any Brazilian musician involved in that country’s highly creative instrumental music scene, they’ll give you a big smile and a list of glowing compliments. Flautist Freire has performed her original music throughout the Americas and in Europe, breaking many barriers and inspiring countless Brazilian women to follow their artistic visions. Pianist Godoy is a major figure in the development of Brazilian instrumental music. A classically-trained virtuoso, at an early age he shifted his focus to Brazilian popular music and American jazz. These accomplished players are joined by San Francisco saxophonist/clarinettist Harvey Wainapel, who has toured internationally with Ray Charles and Jovino Santos Neto among others, to form the San-São Trio. Combining the worlds of Brazilian music and jazz in a chamber music setting, they have produced a body of work that blends the swinging exuberance, virtuosity, and
charm of Brazil’s varied rhythms along with the country’s characteristic tender lyricism. They’ll appear at our series on Thursday 8/22 at 7:30, in the Gottschalk Music Center recital hall (entrance at 1502 E St.) $20 at the door; free for kids twelve and younger. Limited seating: email modestounplugged@yahoo.com to reserve. Friday, August 2, Opera Modesto’s ‘Summer Opera Institute’ program culminates in a free concert with 45 singing students who’ve trained with some of the Valley’s best vocal talent. I attended last year’s inaugural final showcase and it was a real highlight of my summer. 7:30 PM in the
Snider Recital Hall at CSU Stanislaus. The second in our limited summer run of young vocalist showcases will star Summer Opera Institute standout Luca Mitchell, whose multitude of talents include singing in Romanian, writing original piano waltzes, and doing a very decent Josh Groban impression. In 2017 Luca was awarded Best Original Composition at The Valley Talent Project. Saturday, August 10 at 7 PM in the Gottschalk recital hall, $10. That very same night, once we’re wrapped with Luca, I’m hoping to be able to zip up to - of all places - Lucca Winery in Ripon. Masterful music presenter John Griswold and Red Tie Arts welcome Julia Vari, an international recording artist, songwriter and pianist based in Miami, LA and Mexico. Her music dynamically crosses many genres, including world music, Latin, and jazz. Julia will perform backed up by Ernie Bucio’s Big Band for part of the evening. www.red-tie.org. Live music continues every weekend at our series at the Dragonfly Art For Life, 1210 J St. 8/2, Yohan & Katy Partan - 8/8, Nick Ailes, Lisa De Novo, & Tim Burns - 8/9, Anne & Robert Whitehurst - 8/16, TBA - 8/23, Lisette Sims - 8/30, Briget Boyle. 7:30-9:00pm, $10 admission. This is for the teachers, the rogue carpenters who build houses out of books without a hammer, without nails because there is no money left for supplies, but you still make a safe home for students to live inside. Watch them paint walls with their laughter and scream their names down the halls. You hear their echoes, their prayers, their calls, and you answer them all. This is for the innovators who do not simply reach for the stars, but instead rip them straight out of the sky when everyone says they are reaching too high, but look how their classrooms suddenly glow, how their whole school is visible from space. Not even gravity can hold down their dreams. This is for the designers not the fashion kind who fiddle with swatches, but the coders, the creators, the digital artists who build worlds with a keyboard and learn to shoot with a camera instead of a gun to show everyone what is possible when given a chance.

This is for the administrators who hold a safety net beneath the limbs of a tree— a hundred feet high—where great teachers have found themselves stranded without help, without funding because they risked it all for students, but you are there to help them land softly and to whisper: Try again. Nothing worthwhile comes easy. This is for the community that helps lift up children whose backpacks are filled with the weight of the world on their shoulders, their parents’ dreams tucked inside the pockets with notes that read, “Little boy, if you study, you can find cancer’s Kryptonite.” “Little girl, if you listen closely, you will hear the heartbeat of the universe and learn how to keep it alive.”

The social butterflies and the lonely caterpillars still inside their cocoons. This is for you. This moment. This dream. This hope called education that we serve every day— one cup at a time—until you are grown and successful and thoughtful and kind, until you are so full of knowledge that you are compelled to stand up and turn to the long line of learners who have followed your light all the way to our classroom doors. INTER VIEW By Chris Murphy A quality education has never been more important. As our global economy changes quickly, the need for our education system must change quickly as well. We need a world class of academic education so we can compete in a high tech global world and at the same time, we need rich arts, creative and vocational program so that we prepare all of our society for the future. Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE) has been at the forefront of innovation. Not only are our local graduation rates increasing, there are new innovative vocational paths like the VOLT Institute, the Culinary academy and enriching programs like YES Company. New Superintendent Scott Kuykendall is following in the footsteps of other innovative leaders like Tom Changnon and Martin Petersen. Scott grew up in Patterson, attended Orestimba High, graduated from CSU Stanislaus and received his Masters at St. Mary’s. He has been active in new program development at SCOE and has many new initiatives to help the students in our county succeed. Scott lives in Turlock with this family and has a strong desire to make our community better though education. Let’s meet Scott. ModestoView: Why education? What is it that drew you to this field and why do you find it so rewarding? Scott Kuykendall: I always gravitated toward careers that focused on service. Originally, I wanted to go into medicine. However, my freshman year of college made it clear that math and science were not my strong suits. It was only after studying a year abroad in Spain that I changed direction and pursued education. Besides marrying my wife Alison, it was the best decision I ever made. MV: Education is complicated, and add to this so many ethnicities, abilities, and languages, how do you make sure we are delivering a great education? SK: A well-rounded education includes arts integration, student leadership opportunities, career options, academic and athletic competition, and activities that encourage students to explore and grow. MV: Dropouts are down, graduation rates are up and proficiency seems to be on the rise, what do we need to do to continue this trend? SK: We will continue focusing on innovative programs and partnerships within the community. An example of this is the

Stanislaus Cradle to Career Partnership which is building a strong foundation focusing on five actions areas. 1) StanREADY – focuses on preparing children from birth to kindergarten and getting them ready to go to school. 2) Stanislaus READS! - focused on the critical milestone of reading at grade level by the end of 3rd grade and implementing programs at schools to support this area. 3) StanMATH – promoting to parents good practices in the home to help develop numeracy. 4) StanFUTURES - trying to broaden the significant work of previous efforts for an even wider impact ensuring that more students and their families are prepared to enter and successfully navigate college. 5) StanCAREERS is dedicated to ensuring that the local industry will have an educational partner to train, certify, license and prepare residents to fill urgently needed jobs. Additionally, current employees may choose or be asked to “upskill” so that they can take promotions and increase their wages. MV: SCOE has been focusing on some strategic career paths, like the culinary school, what are some of the other opportunities? SK: We provide options like the Sup-

ply Chain Technician Program where students are learning about hydraulics, electrical circuits, mechatronics, robotics and virtual welding. We also partner with AgSafe for agriculture industry training programs and for those 18 years and older, Northern California Construction Training Program, and Valley Occupational and Learning Technical Institute (VOLT). Our newest partnership with Provident Care provides patient care assistant certification. MV: I was part of the original team that helped develop the Valley Business School, now the Valley Charter High School, how has this been successful? SK: Students attending VCHS are able to go to college through dual enrollment. We’ve had success with students who have completed one and even two years of college at the same time they are graduating with their high school diploma. These students complete their four-year degree sooner and their parents save money! VCHS students come to us from all areas of the county. We are meeting the needs of students who want an early college experience. MV: Do you see that there are more
possibilities to get kids college credit while they are still in high school? SK: “Guided Pathways” is a current effort lead by local community colleges to increase the number of high school students completing college courses prior to graduation. Students can opt to attend classes at MJC or at local high schools. Many of our local high schools are now offering opportunities for students to take college classes while in high school. MV: What do we need to do to strengthen our school at that critical 7th and 8th grade range? SK: Communicating to parents of students in 7th & 8th grade so they understand how important language arts, math, and academic rigorous course work is during this time really leads to success in high school and sets their children on the path to college. I encourage students to look for opportunities by taking enrichment classes, summer academies, and utilizing after school tutoring. By joining clubs, taking extracurricular classes and participating in community service, it really creates the most ideal student portfolio. MV: My daughters really thrived in the Modesto High International Baccalaureate program, what are some of the other ways we are innovating in our regional education system? SK: Many of our local high schools have done a great job creating career-oriented pathways that pique student interest. Examples include veterinary science, visual and performing arts, agriculture, logistics, child development and advanced manufacturing. Our elementary schools are expanding dual-language immersion programs and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) opportunities. MV: If you had unlimited resources, what change would you make in our educational system? SK: Additional teachers – and likely not for the reasons you’re thinking. Most folks quickly link more teachers with smaller class size, but student achievement doesn’t improve unless you can maintain classes of fifteen or fewer – and that’s not feasible because schools would quickly run out of classrooms. Finland has a proven model that assigns experienced teachers with newbies as mentors. They are given time during the regular school day to collaborate by creating lesson plans, critiquing lessons recently taught, and sharing best practices in teaching and learning. This would not only improve student learning, it would also bolster strong teaching and increase teacher retention.

MV: Describe some of the successes and innovation you have experienced during your career? SK: I’m most proud of our Come Back Kids (CBK) charter school that began in 2013. This program was created for local dropouts to “come back” and finish their high school diploma. We currently enroll over 700 adults and CBK has graduated over 1000 students since its inception. That’s over 1000 local residents of Stanislaus County that now have a high school diploma and who can further their education or obtain needed employment. MV: SCOE has so many different departments and projects like SPIE, what are some ways that people or companies can connect and get involved? SK: We continue to expand business partnerships through Educational Options and welcome mentors in the 6 Cups to College program and volunteers at Student Events like Academic Decathlon, Mock Trials, and Science Olympiads. MV: Describe your ideal day? As much as I appreciate my job, my ideal day truly revolves around family. SK: After a long Saturday morning walk with our dog (and simultaneously listening to a great podcast), I love making a big
breakfast for Alison and my three boys. The remainder of the day includes playing guitar, taking a nap and spending time outside BBQing with family and friends. MV: What one piece of advice would you give a young student? SK: The advice would be the same advice that I give to my own kids. Success in life - and that includes health, careers, and relationships – can only come about through hard work and honesty. MV: Beatles or Stones? SK: Stones. I love both, but The Stones have endured for so long. Plus, I play a Fender Telecaster ala Keith Richards.

BIG VIEW
Once Upon a Time
in Modesto By Chris Murphy
1969 was a time of great music,
expanded awareness and horizons and nothing showed this to the world like Woodstock, held in August 1969. Along with Elvis and the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, this was one of histories greatedst music happenings. 1969 was a creative space in Modesto USA. Modesto Junior College, Merced College and the fledgling Stanislaus State brought a lot of music and students to the area, bands were plentiful and there were a couple of cool venues to host creative shows, many that attracted big name artists, sharing the stage with our locals. Earlier in the 60s, bands like the Ratz, Eisage, Weathervane and others shared the stage with the big name bands, Van Morrison and Them in 1966, and then new to the scene The Doors in 1967, and then in the spring of 1969, an amazing show by the Grateful Dead at MJC that featured local musicians (see Note from Michael Lingg). There is an excellent recording of this show here: https://gratefuldeadoftheday. com/03-28-1969 Nightclubs like the Purple Turnip brought in bands from everywhere, and 10th and 11th Streets were the places to be. The California Ballroom, the Fable Room, the Amory, and the Playhouse were jumpin’ and the Uptown Arena had wrestling and concerts too, even hosting Montrose, led by Sammy Hagar. In 1965, local musician Gary Duncan moved from the Ratz to Quicksilver Messenger Service and Modesto’s proximity to the bay area provided good access to bands that lasted into the 70s. As the 70s evolved into the 80s and the
16
department stores abandoned downtown for the mall, the venues changed, with the Pavilion opening on Prescott, The Vintage opened in downtown and the Tree Frog and Carmen’s became the places to be and the legendary Fable Room in the basement of the Covell Hotel became Dazzles Underground and local bands California Zephyr, Silvermoon, and Homegrown became local household words. The Disco age saw the conversion of the Pavilion to the Sports Page, the Black Angus was jumpin, teen discos like Charlie Tuna’s brought in the crowds as well as Gilligan’s. Bands like the Lights, Jet Red and Raven brought the rock and bands like Collage and Strayheart delivered the new wave. As Day on the Green brought the superstars to Oakland, Mountain Aire brought the big bands to the foothills and Oakwood Lake had great summer concerts.

MODESTO ROCKS ON!
In the 90s, bands like Fathom and DAM took hold and the super innovative and critically acclaimed Grandaddy found fame around the world while operating out of Modesto. Venues like the Mustang, Dirty Duck and Charlie’s is where it was happening. In the late 90s, the scene really began to catch on with the help of B93 FM that presented annual Summerfests, showcasing local bands like Flying Blind, UVR, Built, Tara Tinsley, Megan Slankard side by side with national acts. Now superfamous, Matt Nathanson got his start in his many Modesto gigs downtown and showcasing the annual Acoustic Christmas shows at the State.

The 90s saw an end to cruising, a new renaissance of downtown Modesto thanks to the Modesto Downtown Improvement District, Tresetti’s, Deva, and the State Theatre. Soon with the redevelopment and construction of 10th St Place and the opening of the Gallo Center in 2007, new business started bringing downtown to life. The Barkin’ Dog has been one of the biggest champions of local music of all types. With music being front and center at the Monthly Art Walks, Patio Fests, Samplers, and the summertime favorite Music In the Plaza, Modesto music is front and center again. 2000 was a milestone year of music in Modesto, with great concerts in the plaza, street corners, Center Plaza, and it introduced X Fest to downtown. X-Fest was one of the region’s biggest catalyst for live music, with our downtown streets filled with stages, featuring music of all genres with over 80 bands performing on one night. This was an event that worked for so many different groups, genres and cultures and it was good for our community. X Fest was an annual milestone that bands prepared for. Sadly X Fest was shut down and hopefully something that showcases so many bands in our community will come back again.
Cruising was a huge part of Modesto’s history and it was going strong and even bigger than ever in the 70s. McHenry was the place to be and Graffiti night would bring the crowds and cars back to 10th and 11th St over the years, but for most, it was 5 points all the way out to Mervyns or Gemco to turn around. It was quite the sight when Grease played at the Briggsmore and then you cruised afterwards. Former Modesto Bee photographer Al Golub had a front row seet to the Modesto of the 70s and 80s and his photos really capture the spirit of the day. Cruising was one big giant gridlock in those days and got bigger as it became sanctioned with Graffiti Night events and concerts.
Modesto still needs a couple of good venues that can hold a couple of hundred people. The California Ballroom is still here and still rocks and the State is showcasing more live music and events. The Queen Bean regularly hosts bands and open mics, and Rivets, P. Wexford’s and Nino’s are reliable for live music and Ralston’s Goat has become one of the places to be seen and heard in the local music scene. We are counting on you, the music fans to get out and check out bands. But standing tall through all of the changes, Crocodile’s still rocks with a full disco light stage and classic jams, fun times and the best dance floor in the area. If you haven’t been, you need to go. It still feels like the Sports Page back in the day. Continued on page 18

Once Upon a Time...
Continued from page 17
Today, there are new generations of new musicians and there is even a school of rock in downtown. VMI Rocks, under the guidance of MAMA winner Darin Morris is teaching new rockers every day and they have amazing showcases at the Gallo Center, the Stanislaus County Fair and host their own music festival in Graceada Park called ModStock, that will be held on August 11. This is especially appropriate in this 50th Anniversary of Woodstock. Somebody scream!
The MAMAs
In 2000, Chris Murphy and Chris Ricci hatched a plan so celebrate local music on a grand Modesto scale, creating the Modesto Area Music Association, aka the MAMAs. Every October, the local music community gets together to celebrate all genres of music and honor a person for their lifetime of supporting local music. Nominations will be posted soon, so it is up to you to vote for your favorites. There is no academy, it is all up to you. The MAMAs are supported by ModestoView, Chris Ricci Presents and our amazing friends the State Theatre, the home of the MAMAs. The 2019 MAMAs will be held on October 15 and is managed by MAMA winner, Middagh Goodwin.

Grateful Dead at MJC
Note from Michael Lingg: I played in the band that was the opening act for the Grateful Dead. Band was called either American Dream or Superband, depending on the day of the week with Myself, Patrick Durr (guitar), Dennis Durr (guitar), Greg Habid (bass), Herman Costa (drums), Bruce Young (tenor sax)and David Patton (alto sax and flute). I only remember that the concrete and glass octagon (?) that was MJC Student Center had horrible acoustics, but I was thrilled that Jerry Garcia played a Gibson SG just like mine. I think that it is reasonable to assume that neither Murphy or Ricci had any idea back in the year 2000 that the Modesto Area Music Awards would be going strong after 20 years. Starting out with only seven categories and being held at Club Maxx and now having over 20 categories with over 200 MAMAnees. Over the years the event has been held at Gallo Center, Fat Cat and the DoubleTree with the State Theatre hosting the event for most of the last two decades. Returning to the Historic State Theatre once again this year on Tuesday, October 15. Since 2000, the MAMAs have been a showcase for the best local talent in all kinds of music from metal, to acoustic, jazz to blues and hip hop to reggae. Amazing performances over the years have come from Good Luck Thrift Store, Flying Blind, UVR, Megan Slankard, DAM, Moonshine Bandits, Puffin Billies and so many others. More incredible performances and surprises are planned to happen as we plan the biggest award show yet celebrating 2 decades of Modesto Area Music.
Voting will go live later this month and will feature over 20 categories, you the fans are the academy, your votes determine who will be the recipient of the coveted custom laser cut Car Hop Trophy, provided each year by Beeler Industries. All the nominees regularly perform in and around Modesto, so we encourage you all to check out the bands, the venues, the comedians and DJs to help make an educated decision on who you think should win. Music in the Plaza is one of the events that the Modesto Area Music Association curates, every band that is performing in August is a past winner or nominee. We also book the local bands at the Stanislaus County Fair, Patio-Fest and the Sampler. Performers send us your contact info so that you are not just on our radar for the Awards Show but also opportunities to perform. Email name, website, email address and genre to mamarecords209@ gmail.com.
Thanks so much to Russ Allsup, for the posters, collections, band listings and timelines and his Modesto music knowledge. Now just about every month there is a new blockbuster, there shows on just about every network and streaming service and local and regional conventions just about every weekend. Some may say things are oversaturated but for the diehards, we say bring it on. As always there will be a fantastic vendors floor with everything you could hope to find. There is going to be a ton of special guests including Sam Jones(Flash Gordon), cast members from the Office, from WWE Kurt Angle, Lita, Chavo & Vickie Guerrero and comic artists Art Adams, Alan Passelaqua, Chris Marrinan and more. There will be comic, toy and collectables. Darth Vader, C Andrew Nelson will be signing

BLUES VIEW Hello everyone. I honestly think this is going to be my best month for the whole year. Let me tell you about it. We, Fearlisha Presents have partnered with Peer Recovery Art Project and Ava Grace Music to put on a big show at the State Theater in Modesto with headliner Chris Cain. Chris Cain has released a dozen albums and is considered to be one of the best blues guitar players alive. He has shared the stage with Albert King and Albert Collins and on the 24th of August, he is coming to Modesto with openers Gravel and Grace and Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame. You don’t want to miss this one. I have a few other cool suggestions for you to check out this month. On the 3rd the Soul Food Festival in Stockton will host Modesto own Gloria T & Innervision. They are an excellent new addition to our local blues scene. BluesBox Bayou Band is going up to Black Oak Casino on the 8th and on the 9th they are hosting Briefcase Blues Brothers Review. Best of the Blues By Earl Matthews this month at the Mancini Bowl with tons of local acts including My newest act Gravel & Grace on the 11th. That same day at the Fruit Yard you can catch Jimmy Vaughn, Buddy Guy and Charlie Musselwhite. If you came out to the fundraiser we did at Ralston’s Goat in May you had the pleasure of seeing The Galvan’s in action. This is official notice that they will be back on the 30th of August at Ralston’s Goat. I’m planning on being there and I hope to see a lot of friends out supporting this fantastic band. Have a great month and I hope to see you out at a show.

COMEDY VIEW Hello, hello, hello ModestoView-ers. I’m back. I couldn’t decide what I wanted
to talk about first, so I drew names out of a hat. The first person to talk about: Saul Trujillo. If you follow local comedy you know Saul Trujillo. He has a way of telling a story that will have you laughing from beginning to end fighting to catch your breath. He’s a member of the Deaf Puppies comedy group and has been working hard not only performing but producing shows. Now the payoff: On August 2, Saul will be featured on the Amazon Prime show Laugh After Dark (season 2, episode 8 for those who need to run to the TV right now). Congratulations, Saul! We’ll be watching. The second bit of news about Saul: he’s ready to keep climbing to the next levels so he will be moving to Los Angeles soon. He will still be around the 209 performing, visiting and being a 209 comic at heart, so hopefully, you’ll still be out there rooting for him. Safe travels, friend. Next bit of news: Anthony K is bringing another big comedy show to Modesto. August 31. This time he has paired up with the DoubleTree to bring comedy downtown. Tickets will be $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Anthony has promised a ‘dope comedy show’ (which for those not up-to-date on your slang means ‘super groovy’). This is advertised as an adult event, so get a sitter for the kiddies now so you don’t miss this show. Anthony

By Felicia Aleman always brings a mix of national and local comics that bring the laughs. In fact, bring tissues, you may start crying, too. Last bit of Modesto comedy news. On August 7 at 6:30 at Barnes and Noble in Modesto there will be an appearance from the comedian Nina G. Barnes and Noble seems like a weird place for comedy, but not a weird place for a woman who is not only a comic, but an author, professional speaker, disability advocate, part of the The Comedians with Disabilities Act. Nina G. is promoting her new book “Stutterer Interrupted: The Comedian Who Almost Didn’t Happen” published by She Writes Press and available at bookstores and Amazon “Stutterer Interrupted,” tells her story of growing up as a stutterer and overcoming learning disabilities to not only achieve her dream of becoming a comic but also becoming a college professor. The book is written in a conversational style that to me, feels like part guide to breaking barriers to achieve your goals and part confessional. One chapter she talks about how her family works to convince the school to provide the services she needs, later we hear how a first kiss ended up being an awkward headbutt. Nina is funny and fascinating and I look forward to interviewing her. You should be there. So, Modesto-Viewers. That’s it for August. Stay hydrated.
We have some truly great people here in
Modesto USA. These are the people that go above and beyond, the extra mile, make things happen and really make change in our community. For over 45 years, Nancy Young has been a driving force to make Downtown Modesto better and more vibrant. Nancy in 1973 joined the Downtown Improvement District that started in 1966. This was when there were still department stores downtown, before the mall. When the mall opened, scooping out the core of downtown retail, it was tough going, and the downtown business rallied together. Nancy Young was there, promoting, organizing and working to bring people downtown, supporting the business owners that open up everyday across the entire downtown. To put this in perspective, the DID works to support the operators of downtown businesses, from G St to Needham and from 6th St to 5 Points. This is a huge area. The Downtown Partnership

represents property owners in a smaller section of Downtown Modesto. For 45 years, Nancy has been promoting downtown, working hard to create new ideas and projects that are designed to bring new people downtown and has developed a great relationship with the many people that are the face of downtown. She has worked to create and help execute very successful programs like the Downtown Sampler, Patio Fest, Trunk and Treat, Art Walk, Dia de los Muertos, Harvest Festival, and Celebration of Lights, Graffiti Cruise Parade, 4th of July Parade and many others. She also coordinates the volunteer Downtown Events Group that executes some of these events and is the liaison with the city officials. Her expertise enables one-stop support for downtown events and assistance to business owners and has delivered amazing results with a very modest budget. Nancy has served with style, respect and dedication and love for downtown Modesto. Nancy is a true asset to our community and has accomplished so much to make Modesto a special place. She is a true friend to many and has the support of so many of our local businesses. Let’s celebrate our Modesto Champion, Nancy Young. Connect with her at motowndid@sbcglobal.com

FIT VIEW Going Anaerobic By Efren Martinez
You lace up your shoes, plug in your
music and you’re off to get your run on. Somewhere between mile two and three you suddenly feel that your jog has become easy so you pick up the pace. At mile three you’re no longer at a joggers pace but more so in a full run and still you find yourself handling the pace with ease. Now your initial jog pace has become more of a sprint. Congratulations! You’ve broken through the fitness
wall. At this point you feel as if you’re flying and the endorphins in your brain have scattered throughout your body. You feel no pain. You feel as if you’re a super hero. These super endorphins are primarily made in the hypothalamus and pituitary glands, though they may also come from other parts of the body as well. This wellknown phenomenon is also known as a “runner’s high” that is felt during and after lengthy, vigorous exercise due to an increase in endorphin levels. But wait! You also at this point may have put your body in an anaerobic state. Although this may help you to win races there is always a price to pay for everything that we do to our bodies in fitness and/or in life. According to the fitness gurus, the difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercise is; aerobic exercise produces energy using a continuous supply of oxygen to sustain the current level of activity without needing additional energy from another source while anaerobic exercise prompts your body to demand more energy than your aerobic system can produce. In easy science, it’s now pulling energy from your muscles instead of building them. You are now burning off more muscle instead of fat. This isn’t necessarily good
if you’re trying to lose (fat) weight or if you’re a body builder looking to bulk up with “Hulk” size muscles. As a tri-athlete it’s always a controlled science to stay lean instead of getting too bulky with muscles. At the same time I don’t want to lose what I’ve worked so hard for; and that’s muscular strength. It’s true, muscle weighs more than fat and having too much bulky muscle can slow you down in a race. My advice is this: if you’re into fitness for your health or perhaps to lose a few fat pounds in the process, keep your workouts at an aerobic level. You can do this by wearing a sports heart monitor or by using the heart monitor on the fitness machine. These devices are geared to help you stay in an aerobic or in anaerobic state depending on your own personal fitness and health goals. Cheers to your Health!
5 Anaerobic Exercise Examples Running sprints rather than a steady jog for an extended period of time, sprints are completed at maximum running effort and potential. Skipping Rope for an extended period of time. Using a Stairmaster or running up several flights of stairs. Open water Swimming in an ocean or lake or swimming sprints in a pool. Rowing

ALL AGES VIEW Happy August Modesto!
A Simpler Life
By Sofia Johnson
Happy August Modesto! I hope everyone is having a great summer and looking forward to the upcoming school year. Last month, I had the opportunity to watch a Poetry Slam “The Chill List” at the State Theater and it inspired me to write about the poetry scene right here in Modesto. Poetry is such a creative way to express anything whether it be political issue or just a beautiful story. To start, I would like to talk a little about the amazing show. Four teams from Northern California competed in Slam Poetry for a $2,000 prize! There were lots
24
of laughs and plenty of tears. The poems ranged from talking about the stigmas that come with race to body confidence to a dedication to the anniversary of the moon landing. Sam Pierstorff, professor at MJC and the one who put on this wonderful event, even wrote an unbelievably amazing slam poem about Modesto. He hosts this show twice a year and I highly recommend it. If you are interested in writing Slam poetry yourself, I recommend looking into Pierstorff ’s class at the JC. MoSt Poetry with Gillian Wegner or open mic nights at the Queen Bean and Barking Dog Grill. I really hope you can enjoy this scene in Modesto as much as I do, whether you’re watching poetry or even up there reading it.

There once was a time, long ago, when people dealt with common problems differently. They relied on home remedies, on common sense, tricks of the trade, and natural cures for common ailments, like colds, headaches, dizzy spells, stomach problems or aching feet. Have we forgotten all about these wonderful simple cures? For depression and anxiety people used herbs and special concoctions that they made themselves. Or maybe they turned to find help from a clergy man or a nun. Today we get on the internet and google about advice on anything that ails us. We believe the written word. For example, there is a machine that stretches your calves in the opposite way. The cost: only $15. We think we got a deal. Because the machine isn’t expensive we feel that we can buy some other ones, and pretty soon we have lots of healing robot friends sitting in our closet. New products are continuously being produced and are brought to market. We can order
the ultimate solution to any problem, be it the best shoe or the best bed. Or the best supplement that promises to keep us young and healthy. The choices are overwhelming. Maybe the time has come to remember things we used to know. When I was a child, my mother would lower a fever by wrapping cold towels around my calves. It felt soothing and actually helped. When we had the flu my mother would boil a pot with chamomile flowers and we would inhale the herbs by putting our heads over the pot, a towel placed over our heads which created a private mini - steam room. I remember that after this simple treatment I could breathe again. I have a lot of respect for the old healing arts, Reflexology, Shiatsu, Acupressure and Massage. The good old “hands-on” experience. You can also do a lot on your own. Massage your feet and hands. Eat well, take a walk, have good thoughts, do good things. Like our ancestors, we can learn how to heal ourselves. My idea is: Keep your life simple. Slow down. I think it’s cool to be able to bring comfort to yourself in a more simple way. We all know what is good to eat and what isn’t and that we need to get enough rest. It’s time that we look to using knowledge that’s been there all along. Dog Days of August By Monica Barber
The dog days of summer are
here and they are bringing the August heat. The only thing that can beat the heat is your wallet right now and that’s because Ms. M has some fun ways for you to save while you play. Take the night off from technology and enjoy your community. National Night Out is August 6th. From 6-9 p.m., Modesto area residents and neighborhoods across the country are invited to step outside their home, turn on the lights and spend time getting to know those in their in neighborhood. In the past, many neighborhoods in Modesto have hosted a variety of events such as block parties, barbeques, potlucks and cookouts while playing games and spreading awareness to prevent neighborhood crime. For more info how to organize in your area: https://www.modestogov. com/295/National-Night-Out August 11th welcomes one of the area’s most amazing events, Modstock at Graceda Park. The 9th annual free musical festival kicks off at 10am and rocks the day away until dusk. The event includes over 20 musical acts, which include local favorites and many of the youth bands produced from VMI rocks. Take in music, food, art, crafts and plenty of family fun. http://www.modstock.org One of the best ways to enjoy the summer in
Modesto are Family Film Nights in the Park. Beginning August 16th, every Friday night starting at 6pm, you can experience a great family film in Graceda Park. Family film night brings back the nostalgia of watching a film outdoors that going to the drive-in used to capture. The Family Film Series is presented for free, every Friday, by the City of Modesto through September 20th. Come out, bring your snacks and watch a free flick and fun things to do for the family. The first movie will be The Incredibles 2 starting at 6pm.
