Back to School Already? Well it’s back to school already. It is so amazing that school starts so early, but I remember when I was a kid, I was kind of ready for school to start back up and see all if my friends after a summer of travelling and hanging out with my friends. Summers around here were always fun, riding our bikes all over, cruising the canal banks, running out to Knights Ferry. No wonder we ended up as bicycle racers. But it’s time for kids to hit the books and the iPads. School sports are heating up, literally, and it is time for some Friday Night Lights. In the middle of all of this late summer toastiness, we need to find time for a cold and tasty beer or other refreshing beverage. Last month, we had fun rocking the Stanislaus County Fair and ate fair food in downtown Modesto and now we turn our sights to the amazing local micro-brew community, that began way back in the early 1900s on 10th St. and got a big jump start with St. Stan’s in the 80s and 90s. Today there are many to choose from and we will get a tour from our friend @thatonebeergal Kelsi Brink. Live music gets a big push this month at the annual VMI / Roberts Auto ModStock at Graceada Park featuring a full day of local bands featuring both brand new bands and long time favorites. continues each Friday evening. Come rock with my band Third Party on the 19th in 10th St Plaza. But our music scene is lacking in some things that we need to take action on ASAP. We need some music houses, we need more places to play as the local music scene is being propped up by our local restaurant and bars, already under a great deal of financial pressure following the pandemic. We open up the nominations for the 2022 MAMA Awards and you can send your suggestions to mama@ modestoview.com so we can get ready for the MAMA Awards on October 18. We need to upgrade our parks, trails and neighborhoods and maybe even get our groove going on some roller skating, and we will catch up with my friend and city councilperson Chris Ricci. Let’s tap in to the new energy on the city council and let’s let our civic leaders know what we want and need and get involved to make your voice heard. As toxic as the local political climate is nationally, we need to do all we can to make our own community better, treating all with respect, equality and the empathy that people deserve. Freedom means being who you want to be and respecting those that are what they want to be. Otherwise it is simply oppression and disrespect. There is a very fine line there we must understand.

Good things happen when we support local businesses. I am so grateful for the local businesses and organizations that support ModestoView each month so that we can bring good news, ideas and information all across our county, reaching more than 160,000 people and thousands more on line and on social. If you want to be one those businesses, please let me know at advertising@modestoview.com We can do good things together and take the time to shop local and keep our dollars here in town. Lets help our kids go back to school with the right supplies and support. A good education can change your world, and it takes a good community to help kids succeed. Check out the sneak peak of the Modesto Children’s Museum this month and see where the excitement leads. See you out and about and please make sure you tell me what you like and what you don’t like about ModestoView so that we can continue to make it better. Where Were You In '62?

By Middagh Goodwin

On August 1st, 1973, American Graffiti, the coming of age film co-written and directed by George Lucas, premiered at Los Angeles’ Avco Center Triplex. The film’s release was staggered across the country, opening on August 12th at New York City’s Sutton theatre and, on August 15th, 23 more theatres, including 9 in Detroit and 5 in Denver, would begin showing the film. American Graffiti opened with great fanfare in Modesto on November 21st, 1973, at the Briggsmore Theatre, with George Lucas and his family in attendance. Lucas was presented with the Key to the City by Mayor Lee Davies. Releases of the film across the country would continue into January of 1974. Throughout its original release, American Graffiti became the second-most successful movie in the history of Universal Pictures and number eleven on the industry’s alltime. The most-successful North American theatrical engagement of American Graffiti was a 63-week run at the Varscona in Edmonton, Canada. The movie’s longest run in the United States was a 54-week run at the Colorado 4 in Denver. American Graffiti was inspired by Lucas’s time at Thomas Downey High School and dragging(cruising) 10th and 11th streets in Downtown Modesto. Every June, Modesto celebrates our history, car culture, and one of the best movies of all time with the American Graffiti cruise, car show, and festival, along with dozens of other car shows all summer long. Along with the Legends of the Cruise markers on 10th Street, the Cruise Route signs on 10th and 11th and the opening of the Graffiti USA Cassic Car Museum, Modesto truly is the Home of American Graffiti. The film’s iconic tagline, “Where were you in ‘62?” holds special significance to Thomas Downey High School’s graduating class of 1962, having inspired classmate George FOLLOW US:

The class will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of their graduation on Saturday, September 22nd, at the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum in honor of their shared history. All graduates of the TDHS class of ‘62 are invited to join your classmates for dinner, drinks, a DJ, and dancing. Share old memories and new stories with classmates while surrounded by classic cars and memorabilia. Invitations have been sent out to every-

Exciting things are happening in our community. We are on the verge of the having a major renaissance of our history and cool info-educational opportunities. Just last month, we had the ground breaking of the Awesome Spot playground for all abilities and the Graffiti USA Museum is taking shape and tours of the site are being given and there are a few events taking place and the Museum store is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10-4. Now, there is something really exciting happening in downtown Modesto. The Modesto Children’s Museum is going to open it’s doors and show what they have been planning over the last few years. This has been a project that has been championed by Jake and Katie Barber and Ryan

Abigail Power Eric Benson Middagh Goodwin Harrison Power Efren Martinez Patty Castillo Davis Grace McNamara Salvatore Salerno Mary Layton Monica Barber Brandilyn Mitchell Tasha Wilson Carly Russell CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHERS Efren Martinez Diane Moody Michael J Mangano Philip Johnson

By Chris Murphy and Chelsea Foy. These are parents that really care about our community and our future and they have put a team together that will truly bring some positive change to our community. There has been a lot of hard work and fundraising behind the scenes to get it to this point and now, you can see what is going to happen. We NEED, great things for kids, and youth to do and we need experiences that will make young professions stay or return to Modesto to raise their family. Located on 11th Street, the Modesto Children’s Museum, aka MOCHIMU, will be an interactive experience, with fun and tactile things to do and special features for kids of all abilities. Kids will be able to “shop” for produce, learn about water hydrology, air currents and so much more. Don’t miss this free community event on 11th St between I and J to learn about what his going on and celebrate this new experience at the ground breaking on August 13, from 10 to 1 pm. You won’t want to miss it and hopefully, you will plan on making a contribution to bring this to life. Modesto Children’s Museum 928 11th St. www.modestochildrensmuseum.org

GO TAKE A HIKE!

By Salvatore Salerno

What’s there to do in Modesto? Does everything have to need money? Yes, there is plenty and no, it does not! Come along and take a walk with me, If not side by side, at least stroll down This paper lane of stairstep lines, Then use that free and perfect exercise For which your body’s well designed. For those with an urban trailway bent, There is the old Tidewater Railway Line, Now the Virginia Corridor, and newly Re-furbished along its four miles With picnic spots, canopy shades, Barbeques and bright garden plots. What’s to do on this through-city path? Push baby in the stroller, go for a run, Have a sandwich and coffee, meet up With friends for a chat and step out, Let your dog take you along for fun, Maybe ask of some new people there, “What do you do in Modesto?” For those of you with a naturely bent, You could follow the Tuolumne River Flowing along, at Gateway Parcel Or other locales, or hike by Dry Creek Along the Peggy Mensinger Trail— Or roam circles around the urban groves In any of your parks, with miles of Paths for those who will seek them. There’s a colorful cast of characters, sure, Including yourself and your own gadabouts. For those with a nostalgic bent, You could circle that cluster of stars Marked as the Legend of the Cruise, With George Lucas and other folks named, To mark that movie, stroll your memory lane When classy cars formed informal parades, When being seen and heard made the scene, When boys will be boys to be roadsters for life. Take your time to think of those times, Then amble the streets for art, food and drink. For those of you with a neighborly bent, You could start from your home, turn right, Then left, then do a random meander Past houses and yards known and unknown, Past people creating their fluid tableaus, And perhaps chat with a neighbor to ask, “What do you do for fun in this town?” So up from the couch or that easy chair, Out of the door, and out to the open air Of both green and human natures; Use that free, healthy exercise to ask, How do I love and enjoy Modesto? Take your mind for a good look around; Let your footfalls discover the many ways.

ART VIEW

Hot August Nights in the 209, a time of car shows, late summer cruising, kid’s art camps, heated Art Walk and pop-up Art and Crafter shows. Modesto lost a longtime supporter, and sometimes guerilla promoter of many of these fun community activities in Carman King. Otherwise known as Modesto Americana and always as the “angel lady” in her art jewelry and angel giveaway projects, she even reached out to foreign destinations. A unique, cheerful personality, I got talked into working many an event, or put up to some new project for over a decade, and will miss our friend very much. Many of you have her angel charms. Carman shared my Open Studio spot, kid’s art contests, and got me to sit in parking lots with art, to support various crafter markets, and poster contests. Think of Carman as classic cars roll by. In the spirit of car shows, the Kruse-Lucas Gallery at 525 Tully Road still has the Graffiti Summer Events and California Car Culture photographs of Rick Raef through the end of the month. Gallery is open Monday through Friday 9 AM to 5 PM, just across from MJC. Rick Ingraham will be the featured artist there in September and October.

HOT August Art

The 8th edition of the START or Stanislaus Art Magazine is in print, soon in the mail this month. Art magazine for kids and adults, with activities, and art news. Quite a bit of kid’s art in the publication. The Magnolia Avenue Pop-Up Art Fair will be on August 13, 9 AM to 1 PM at the corner of Magnolia Avenue and Mensinger Avenues in Modesto. Local artists on sale in the neighborhood community event. Dragonfly Art for Life will host a Robots and Zombies watercolor class on August 20. Dragonfly, Lo-Fi, The Farmacy, E and E Studios, State Theatre, Bouquet Bar, Reform Pilates, Mistlin Gallery and The Chartreuse Muse are regulars for Third Thursday Art Walk. The third Thursday is August 18. Not part of Art Walk, but full of art, Jeff Moore and new artists are featured this month at Peer Recovery Art Project on Tenth Street. Looking for new to be seen local artists check out the Chartreuse Muse Emergence Show, with quite a few names I did not recognize but loved this very strong show, worth seeing. If you can’t make it during hot daytime hours, check it out during the Art Walk. The show ends this month. People, Places and Things is the current

show at Mistlin Gallery, ending August 6. Best of Show winner is Emily Crimmel, “Don Replica” pen and ink drawing. A lot of interesting and good work in this show, with many new artists in the gallery. August 4 is the current deadline for the Annual Autumn Art Festival member’s show and fundraiser. I’m planning to enter. Meanwhile, stop by the gift shop area. I favor the coffee cats, but much to choose from, and supports the gallery and local artist members.

Shout out to artist friends Jonathan Troxler and Phil Murillo. Jonathan was honored to be a featured artist during the McHenry Museum 50th anniversary celebration. I got a couple of his photo-realism painting images on tee shirts I picked up at Art Skull. I missed the notice on the Museum last month. Phil is moving away from the 209 and will be sorely missed for the many public arts and personal projects he has done over the years.

MAMA VIEW

Music in the Plaza - Things are getting Hot!

A Call for MAMAnees

.By Middagh Goodwin

23 years ago Chris Murphy and Chris Ricci had discussed a vision over lunch at Harvest Moon to celebrate our local musicians and the Modesto Area Music Awards were born. The first year was held at Club Max at the then Red Lion Hotel(now the DoubleTree by Hilton). 7 MAMA Awards, all handmade out of Mrs. Butterworth bottles by Rebecca Murphy were given out. By year 2 the awards show had already outgrown Club Max and was moved to the State Theatre(which has been the home of the MAMAs for most of the last 20-plus years: being held at the DoubleTree Ballroom, FatCat and Gallo in 2007 its inaugural year.) It is that time of year that we start gearing up for the Modesto Area Music Awards

By Middagh Goodwin

where we celebrate the performers and the places that host live music. As always we want to know who you think is deserving of taking home a coveted stainless steel car hop trophy. We had nearly 2 years off with limited to no live entertainment, the MAMA ceremony came back last year with a stripped-down lean and mean ceremony and we are ready to do it again at the State in October. Just an FYI, asking your fans and family members to send emails saying you should be nominated, does not move the needle in your favor. We are looking for input from venue owners and staff, promoters, performers, sound and stagehands. Feel free to throw your hat in the ring but please give

us your picks of who should be going up against you or your favorites in the other categories. What acts have you seen or played with that really stood out? This input is invaluable in helping narrow down the field in each category and determining who will go onto online voting. Voting is scheduled to go live at the beginning of September and it will close at 11:59 pm on October 16th the Sunday before the Awards Show. Once again the MAMAs will take place at the historic State Theatre on Tuesday, October 18th. MAMAnees and their guests(one per) are invited to attend the Modesto Area Music Awards at no charge to celebrate and cheer on each other. The event will be live streamed by Central Valley TV on the ModestoView website www.modestoview.com to thousands of viewers around the world. I hope you will take the time and check out www. modestoareamusic.com and check out the nominees and please vote. Most importantly, make a point to go see live musicit as it iss one of the things that make Modesto vibrant. Please join Modesto in celebrating Modesto Area music.

Music in the Plaza came back in full force in April and so far 16 bands have rocked 10th Street and we still have 13 more performers before the season closes. August 5th is First Friday and we have two fantastic indie/alternative bands performing Sloome and Paper Space both have some great music you can check out before coming out and seeing them live, Delve into Sloome’s jangly indie pop at https:// sloome.bandcamp.com/ and Paperspace has a bit of 90s indie rock and silly punk and maybe a little grunge to their sound https://paperspace. bandcamp.com/. August 12th Threshold is a Modesto favorite and brings the horns and the greatest hits of the 60-90s and maybe a few surprises. You will definitely want to make sure you bring your dancing shoes. August 19th Third Party fronted by ModestoView’s own publisher Chris Murphy will return to the Plaza. Songs from the American songbook from the 50s-90s with a fair share of Beatles thrown in for good measure. August 26th Crashboat will bring the island rhythm and sound of summer with their own brand of Cali-Reggae. Don’t miss this talented band from Merced at their debut at Music in the Plaza. Music starts at 7 pm and goes until 9 pm, make your reservations at Fuzio, Ralston’s Goat or T-Cups patios or just bring your lawn chairs and set up in front of the bands.

UNPLUGGED VIEW The Amtraker’s Guide To The Gallery (Vol 3)

Time to wrap up this travelogue trilogy for now. I spent the better part of July playing tour manager + roadie, collecting memories and material for a future volume of The Amtraker’s Guide, which probably means I’ll spend the better part of August catching up on sleep and other trivial matters. Before I Rip Van Winkle it, here are some more highlights from my years riding the rails across America. Sioux Falls, SD is among my favorite cities. The downtown area is heavily populated with stunning sculptures. Grab lunch at 22TEN Kitchen Cocktails, where elk ravioli is on the menu. The city’s most beautiful feature is Falls Park, where the river winds through canyons of pink quartzite. Adjacent to the park is the Levitt amphitheatre, where a free summer concert series introduced me to the best new act I discovered last year: Chicago cabaret-blues-pop quartet The Claudettes. They’re at the top of my wish list to bring to Modesto; until if and when that day comes, treat yourself to their music at www.theclaudettes.com. Fort Worth, TX is an old favorite. I hadn’t been back since before my career as a music presenter began until I passed through to see some old friends this past winter. A sequence from cult classic ‘Logan’s Run’ was filmed at the Fort Worth Water Gardens, a half waterfall, half whirlpool structure with

by Aaron Rowan steps spiralling down to the basin. Lonesome Dove Western Bistro, opened by an ‘Iron Chef America’-winning challenger and where I once enjoyed the most expensive dinner of my life, is still going strong and serving treats like kangaroo nachos and rabbit-rattlesnake sausage. Recommended local music: Ginny Mac, who I met at a speakeasy show during my recent visit. Ginny puts her own twist on vintage jazz & western swing. Make the short hop over to Dallas while you’re at it to catch a live set by Glitter (the artist formerly known as Glitter Rose), who once headlined my acoustic festival. She’s won all kinds of awards for her songs & music videos in both country and rock categories. On the homefront: Valley Talent Project grand prize winner Kalea Jackson returns to my Young Artist series this month at The Dragonfly Art For Life. A performer in numerous Gallo Center musicals and other productions, Kalea is eager to lead another program of musical theatre and pop favorites, and likely a song or two on her ukulele. Friday August 12 at 7:30 pm, 1210 J St., $10 at the door. Bring some extra cash in case Kalea’s infectious creative energy moves you to paint during her show; there are rock and canvas options for an added price. And speaking of young artist alumni of my concerts, several of them appear in the cast of MPA’s ‘Seven Brides For Seven Brothers at the Gallo, five dates between August 13 and 21. Ought to be a fun show, grab your ticket at www.galloarts.org. Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. MODESTO UNPLUGGED. www.modestounplugged.com.

The Secret Garden By Chris Murphy

This is a classic story of a person that had a chance meeting and then fell in love with Modesto. Norma Moreno met the former owner of Ridgway’s at a Sierra Nevada casino and decided to come check it out. She really liked the place and told her if you want to sell it, she was interested. Not much later, she got the call and a new love of Modesto began. “This place had great bones and a great story and was the perfect place to build something new”, she said as we enjoy a nice flight mimosas in the beautifully remodeled Secret Garden Restaurant and Bar. It is truly a stunning transition thanks to Norma’s long experience in food service, managing restaurants and concessions in the Bay Area. Norma and her partner Chef Andy Chhay have taken what people liked about the former Ridgway’s and have created a bright new fresh space with new floors, garden greenery and some bright pink neon that invites you in for a fresh new menu, great craft cocktails, and some of the staples that you have loved for years. Chef Andy is trained in French cuisine and brings his Vietnamese and French experience to a new level here. I have a particular love of this place. When my girls were little, we would run with the jogger stroller and bikes to breakfast on the weekends. As they grew

up, we would walk and ride and enjoy our favorite breakfasts. True to this history today, the fresh milkshakes are back, the big hearty portions you remember along with some truly amazing tastes that will make you re-imagine breakfast, lunch and dinner. In the kitchen, along with Chef Andy, long time favorites Jesus and Oscar are there. Jesus has been in the kitchen there for 37 years, so it was no surprise, that when I ordered my Carnivore meat loaded omelet with hash browns, it was a good as ever. What is new and fresh are the Fruity Pebbles, Bananas Foster and Churro French Toast. Holy moly these are amazing. Fresh whipped cream, rich dipped French Toast and you are good to go. Match this up with a mango mimosa or an Irish coffee and you are set. The savory breakfast offerings like country-fried steak are good solid go-to staples. And yes, hash browns since no breakfast is complete without them. Of course there are lighter offerings like fruit and oatmeal. For lunch, there is a great new line of sandwiches and one of our favorites, the buffalo chicken wrap, with a nice spicy sauce and great chicken. The Chinese chicken salad features fresh strips of grilled chicken and will keep you running but don’t miss the great burgers with crinkle cut fries. Originally, Norma thought she would do breakfast, brunch and lunch, but very soon after they took over, they realized there are a multitude of regulars for dinner and she and Chef Andy have delivered a great evening menu. If you love salmon like I do, the baked salmon is wonderful with fresh veggies and rice. Fridays are a special day at the Secret Garden with a Prime Rib special and fish and chips as well as

their shrimp and oyster plate and taco trios. For you happy hour fans, there is a special menu you will love. One thing to remember, do not forget dessert! They have a wonderful fresh made Crème Brule, they hand spin their own cotton candy, and make a loaded brownie that will knock your socks off and you can even get a dessert sampler! One of Norma’s main wishes is for the Secret Garden is a great place to gather, spend a few hours eating, enjoying cocktails and sharing good times. The bright and fresh garden look makes this real and there are many sharing cocktails and some that are truly eye openers. One of the most striking cocktails is the Walk in the Clouds, featuring a big cloud of spun cotton candy covered with edible flowers and butterflies. There are many new customers now, many

that never knew what it was before and love it for what it is now. If you have never heard of this place, you should go check it out today for a fresh new experience. If you have been a regular for 30 years, you will love it. Don’t forget to get a selfie by the entrance and help spread the word.

National Coffee Month By Middagh Goodwin

August is National Coffee Month and if you are like me, you start your day off with a cup of coffee, I am and have been a serious coffee drinker my entire life, I buy whole beans and grind fresh daily(no Folger’s Crystals for me). Back in the nineties when friends would be out at the bars drinking I would be at a coffee shop(even going on trips to find cool cafes around the region.) I am even part of a rock n’ roll coffee-drinking gang(let’s call it a club)the US Mugs whose motto is Death Before Decaf. If I am addicted to anything it would be caffeine and music. Those living in Modesto are pretty fortunate to have so many great locally owned cafes to choose from.

The iconic Queen Bean located at 1126 14th St, offers a very relaxing setting to enjoy your coffee drinks such as espresso & mochas plus salads, pastries & sandwiches. Check out their calendar for pop-up markets, poetry reading and acoustic jams.

Cafe Deva 1202 J St. is another gem in the middle of downtown walking distance from the State Theatre. Great caffeinated drinks along with delicious baked goods, do yourself a favor and stop in for breakfast or brunch(they offer vegetarian options). Greg Edwards has started hosting Off the Air again and we could not be happier about that.

Preservation Coffee & Tea 1030 J St. The baristas at Preservation take coffee brewing seriously, and if you do too you know what I am talking about. No blenders, no artificial flavors just great speciality drinks made with the finest ingredients. Also, one of the best spots to people watch in downtown Modesto. Culture Coffee Bar 2801 McHenry Ave Ste A. If you are a regular at the Farmers Market you have most likely had a wonderful drink from Culture Coffee but may not know that they now have a brick and mortar cafe down McHenry. Stop by when you are out shopping or just make a special trip to check out their wonderful location and curb your java urge. Giacomo’s Espresso 525 Scenic Dr, is a wonderful little drive-thru espresso shop for people who are looking for fast, quality coffee, mochas, lattes and more. just a little off the beaten path. Great staff, and delicious drinks all at a reasonable price.

Breaking news:

The Secret Garden (this month’s Food View) 2401 E Orangeburg Ave, will be putting an espresso bar this month, so that will be something to look forward too.

If you are serious about your java like I am, stop by and order your favorite drink or be a little wild and let the barista make you something special. FOLLOW US:

INTERVIEW By Chris Murphy

Chris Ricci

is a great example of someone that came to town for work, and decided that he would want to live here. Back in 1998, we did a fundraising concert together with B93 to raise money to rebuild the Graceada Park playground and produce Summerfest concerts. Soon after, Chris moved to Modesto and has made a huge positive impact. A brief history will tell you that Chris is an action oriented person, creating and putting on events both large and small, most notably X-fest that brought music and fun to downtown Modesto, managed the Fat Cat Music House, Taco Fest and more. Over the years, Chris became passionate about local issues, got more involved in the community, and successfully ran for Modesto City Council. Chris, his wife Kimberly and sons Connor and Henry, make their home in the College area and when he is not working on Modesto related issues, works for a national political organization on progressive and common sense causes. Let’s catch up with Chris and see what he is working on and what issues face our community. ModestoView: What has surprised you most since you have been on the Modesto City Council? Chris Ricci: How well the city council works together to solve problems and how hard the staff works to execute our vision. Our city has a lot of challenges and it gives me confidence to know there are people working with me that are just as dedicated as I am to making it right. MV: What are some of the day-to-day things you deal with that may not be obvious to the average citizen? CR: I wish Modestans knew just how much influence over the government they can have. People don’t realize that every resident has ownership and influence on the government. Far too few make their opinions and visions known and as a result, their contributions that would make our city better never come to be. MV: It has been a long road since you brought X-fest to downtown; how has the landscape changed for large festivals and how do you think the community has suffered since it ended? CR: The expenses keep going up and it has become more difficult to navigate the permitting process due to staffing difficulties. On the positive side, our local government tends to be more inclusive of diverse events than was the case when X Fest ended. The community had a real regional music festival in X Fest. As we have seen, events like that are hard to replace.

14

MV: You and I share a love of live music and founded the MAMA Association 22 years ago, but our local music scene is in a bit of a funk with few places to perform that aren’t on the backs of our local restaurants. What do we need to do to really become a live music city? CR: Creative pursuits are going to be a huge part of our future economy. AI is popping up everywhere, but it can’t replace human creativity and impulse. Hopefully with programs like Stanislaus 2030 we as a community start to recognize the importance of training and supporting local musicians, entertainers, writers, and poets. It wouldn’t cost a whole lot, but the impact would be substantial. An example could be a free community recording studio connected to our public access station, access to airtime on cable for comedians that can be easily translated to youtube, tiktok, and facebook. It needs start-up spend, marketing, and management, but it isn’t a massive lift. MV: You have lived in the entertainment side for most of your life, what can Modesto do to encourage more festivals and activities to bring our people together? CR: We need to recognize and support communities that have the ability to execute events and activities and marry them to the industries that could benefit from their success. We have groups like the shire that have been budding for years, but have never really bloomed. The community needs to find gems like that and give them what they need to make their idea happen and see if it succeeds. MV: You have been very vocal and visible about posting new ideas and possibilities like concessions in our parks, micro housing and Pride crosswalks; what can we do to bring these to reality? CR: The best way people can support change in our communities is to speak at council meetings, write letters to the bee, or send us an email at council@modestogov. com. Tell your friends to do it too. Government basically lives on a stove full of sauce pans, whichever pan gets the most heat gets the results.

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

MV: I am a huge supporter of the MPD Park Ranger Program, how do you think this group can succeed in creating safe places for our community to enjoy and what support is needed to expand it? CR: Make sure to communicate with the rangers and tell them what is happening in your local park at parkrangers@modestopd. com. We can help them by reporting the issues that we are seeing in the parks every day like drug dealing, prostitution, drug use. On the homeless side supporting common sense solutions like safe camping will also be helpful. MV: For people that are hesitant to get involved, what is the best “first step”? CR: Just write a one line email to your city council (council@modestgov.com). It can be as simple as “Please do something about the fireworks” or “We need more housing because I can’t afford rent” or “Please do something about the homeless”. Do it every week. It takes 15 seconds and it makes a massive impact because now your representatives know how you feel. MV: From your point of view, what areas is Modesto doing a better job than other communities and where are we behind? CR: Our updated Police response models, whether it is CHAT (Community Health and Assistance Team) that answers homeless and non violent mental health calls, Park Rangers, or the work the community is doing on Forward Together Modesto is making strong progress in making our city safe. The statistics show it is working with crime going down. We are behind in properly funding our city departments. Modesto has some of the lowest funding levels for Police, Fire, Parks, and Forestry of any city of our size in the state. MV: One of my philosophies is that many of our regional valley towns suffer from the same negative issues, and that it is our job to high light what makes us different and better, do you agree with this? CR: I agree, but I will take it a step further. To be perceived as different we need to change the fundamental similarities. Bold local initiatives like the Graffiti Museum,

the Awesome Spot, the Children’s Museum, Gallo Center, Prospect Theater, and the State are the types of local institutions we need to develop, support, and most of all market to change our local brand. We also need to go further. We need a Star Wars Museum. We have the biggest winery in the world, but we don’t have a tasting room celebrating that in Downtown Modesto. We have to continue taking advantage of our heritage because no one can take it away from us. A regional festival or two wouldn’t hurt either. MV: If you had to rank the Top 10 issues that need our attention and where people can get involved and make a difference. CR: 1.) Homeless Solutions - Support Safe Camping - Unhoused people need a place to go and the just shelter solution isn’t working. 2.) Parks Reboot - Launch public private partnerships to use currently abandoned public parks. 3.) Establish Local Media - We need real local media that provides news and opinions that don’t publish stories based on the need to monetize clicks or Sacramento based television stations that only come to Modesto when something big burns down. Using PEG money Modesto has the ability to create a public media center that can tell the real story of Modesto and then distribute content on cable, internet platforms like facebook, tiktok, youtube, podcasts and beyond. 4.) Rebuild American Legion Hall Modesto needs a state of the art concert facility that is designed for acts that don’t fit in the State or Gallo Center much like a Catalyst in Santa Cruz, Slims in San Francisco, or the old SOMA in San Diego. 5.) Outdoor Roller King - Roller Skating in Modesto never really went away. Tell the council you want an outdoor roller rink that is owned by the community. 6.) LGBTQ Sidewalk - Modesto is a wonderful, loving, and kind place. People from the LGBTQ+ have earned our support.

FOR MORE MODESTO INFO: www.modestoview.com

7.) Add Residential to McHenry Ave McHenry Avenue has so much extra space and Modesto needs infill and 10,000 more housing units. It’s a perfect match. 8.) Warehouse Market - Create a space where local vendors can rent a space monthly and house a local butcher, baker, produce suppliers, artisans, coffee and more. 9.) Rolling Bicycle Bar - They’re fun. 10.) Blighted Commercial Building Ordinance - Abandoned buildings are a magnet for crime, vandalism, and blight. Tell your city council member to approve the new blighted commercial building ordinance. MV: As a parent of both small kids and teen-age kids, what do you think we need to do to keep these kids here in town as they grow up? CR: The biggest thing we can do is build Modesto’s culture. In the world of remote work and competing with AI people are going to stay in communities with entertainment and amenities. Modesto has a good foundation. We just need to keep filling it out.

THURSDAY'S UNTIL NOV. 17TH

August Movies

&SATURDAY'S UNTIL DEC. 17TH 8am-1pm 16th st. Between H & I sts. in Modesto

MV: How important is the sales tax initiative this fall? CR: The sales tax is critical to the future of our city. This year’s city budget has an $8 million deficit. We’re filling it in with one time federal dollars. We can’t do that forever. There is a reason we have gone from 300 police officers to less than 200 over the last 10 years. There is a reason our fire department can’t respond to calls as fast as they used to. That doesn’t begin to address decimated departments like Parks and Forestry that are so hollowed out by budget cuts they barely can function at all. With current revenue things will get significantly worse in coming years. I know that is hard to believe, but the numbers are what they are. Passing the tax will get us the peace of mind of knowing we’ve guaranteed that our community is safer. We’ll all know that the services we assume are a given will be handled like they used to. Our city trees will be cared for and our parks will be cleaner and maintained. MV: Describe the perfect Chris Ricci day. CR: Taking a quick walk with my family from our house to Roseburg square and maybe get a coffee at O’Briens or some tea at Dragonfly if we’re feeling fancy. If we want a beer we can grab one at Divine Swine or drop by Yogurt Mill. End up the afternoon at Graceada watching our 4 year old at the playground or the splash pad and finish things up catching Moband. MV: Beatles or Stones? BIG VIEW

By Chris Murphy

Modesto has been a beer place since the turn

of the century. Hard work, agriculture, culture and the fast growth of Modesto drove a big thirst. Back in the day, when 9th St was Front Street, and the economy revolved around our railroad, there were plenty of thirsty Modestans and visitors. In this rich central valley, all of the crops needed to make beer were all at our fingertips.

O! T S E D O AROUND M Modesto Brewery

Located on a then bustling 10th St, the Modesto Brewery saw a lot of action. There were many saloons in the downtown area, hydrating the thirsty guests at the new hotels under construction at the time. Setting the stage for a bright future of brewing, that would be later overshadowed by the evolution of the Gallo Winery.

St. Stan’s BREWING

Autumn sounds like Amber and that makes me think of the original Modesto area microbrew, St. Stan’s, who was a pioneer of Altbier (a style of beer brewed in the Rhineland) in the USA. Allegedly, it was the 7th Microbrew in the USA. Back when I used to work at ZAPCO in the early 80s, we would have our after work “meetings” at St. Stan’s back when it was in a barn out on the west side on Shoemake Road. Founded by Garith and Romy Helm, huge fans of German beer, they worked hard to brew Altbier and became micro trail blazers. They hired our friend Bill Coffey in 1981 who would become an expert in brewing craft beer. The brewery was in full production with kegs in 1984 and started bottling in 1987 . The Amber Alt was unbelievable and there was even a custom line of Graffiti Beer back in the early 1990s! With their brewhouse in downtown Modesto, St. Stan’s was available on many continents and members of my family even saw St Stan’s in the pubs of England. I still have an unopened 12 pack of the 1992 Graffiti Ale. The road has been rough for St. Stan’s over the last few years, but read on to the end of this story.

In our area, there are so many great new tastes in our area you need to check out so this month, we turn this over to our friend and soon to be married Kelsi Brink. My girls grew up with Kelsi, her sister and her parents and it’s wonderful to see our friends return to Modesto after college and make their homes here. Let’s get to know Kelsi as she takes you on a little beer tour.

Hi! My name is Kelsi, otherwise known as @thatone-

beergal on Instagram! I am 26-years-old and have my Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications with an emphasis of Broadcast Journalism! I graduated from California State University, Fullerton in May 2018 and moved back home to the Central Valley later that Summer to pursue my job in collegiate athletics. I stayed in that field until recently when I decided to pursue my career in marketing where I focus on social media. When I’m not working, I love traveling to different breweries and restaurants. I have played the guitar since I was seven and also LOVE sports. I grew up watching and playing all different kinds of sports but eventually fell in love with swimming when I reached high school. Since I don’t have access to swim as much as I used to, I just go on runs and work out in my free time. I got into my love of craft beer from my sister and brother-in-law because I always used to go with them to all of the craft breweries in Southern California. Now, my fiancé and I share this together and love to hang out at the local breweries. Something I love most about the brewery world is not just the beer but I absolutely love the people, I am also a foodie and these often have great creative food as well. This is a huge reason why I gravitated toward craft breweries!

That’s a little about me so let’s take a little beer tour... FOR MORE MODESTO INFO: www.modestoview.com

Back to the future

So our tour ends up at Contentment. My fellow Stanislaus State alumni Alejandro Serrato, Owner & Brewer at Contentment Brewing Company is coming on strong as we exit peak pandemic. Contentment has a great gathering space, live local music, DJs and games. They specialize in small run flavors like cantaloupe and apricot, graffiti-themed brews like Impala Lager, and Just Cruzin’ Wheat. These are the refreshing brews we need for Modesto Summer. This is a great place to hang out over by MJC in the shadow of the Modesto Silos that are featured on our cover. But the real big news that brings us full circle is that St. Stan’s has a new home at Contentment. Earlier this year, Alejandro secured the rights to the name and has a great space to recreate some of the classic beers that made St. Stan’s famous. This is just the start and we know it will be a great new journey. The ViewCrew is hoping that the classic Amber Alt will be coming soon. Maybe we will spot our old pal Bill Coffey there soon, too! So whatever you do, try something new this month, and hang out for a bit. It is all about exploring, meeting new friends and enjoying this place. Early Modesto Brewing

Stanislaus Brewery, circa 1880 With beer being the theme for the August issue, it only made sense to attempt to delve into Modesto’s own history of brewing. With limited pictures available and conflicting accounts even going back to the 1880’s, here is a look at the breweries and individuals who partook in early Modesto brewing. It seems the honor of first brewery in Modesto, churning out steam beer and porter to nearly every saloon in town along 9th Street, belongs to the Stanislaus Brewery which started producing beer in the mid1870’s. It was housed in a large two-story wooden building located at the corner of 9th and G Streets, which in Branch’s 1881 History of Stanislaus County was referred to as “one of Modesto’s best buildings… everything about the brewery is neat and orderly inside and out…the beer manufactured by proprietors Sorenson and Petersen was of excellent and much in demand.” The brewery was started by R. A. Sorenson,

who was born in Germany and came to Stanislaus County in 1872. Sorenson’s brewing endeavor was joined by his brother-in-law, C.A. Petersen. Stanislaus Brewery had the distinction of also operating its own saloon at the corner of the building, which advertised also serving Tom and Jerrys and Hot Scotch, and in 1889 had a bowling alley added by Petersen. A brewery with an onsite bar and bowling alley certainly sounds like something we could expect to find today, however in the latter half of the 19th century was completely unique. When Sorenson passed away in 1903, it appears the brewery ceased production and was later converted into a lodging house, which ultimately was razed around 1930. The other early brewery in town, aptly named, was the Modesto Brewery which started producing beer around 1880. The Modesto Brewery was started by M. Modesto just enjoyed a wonderful 103rd year of Moband. The crowds in Graceada Park loved the summer sounds, the blankets were plentiful and it was great to see the kids in the park so that a new generation will love Modesto’s amazing summertime tradition. As always, the band played a mix of old and new songs, and of course, the marches of John Phillip Sousa were a highlight. Now MoBand needs you. If you have been to Mancini bowl recently, you know that the benches and seats are in desperate need of repair. MoBand was instrumental in creating and actually building the “Bowl” seating (Proof Mancini pictured during installation). In cooperation with the City of Modesto, we are pleased to announce that we will be replacing the seating that is missing and/or damaged. We need to raise $150,000 to complete this project for Seating and Bowl improvements. We want to have it ready for next year’s MoBand season and of course all of the other community groups that use Mancini Bowl all year long. Please help us with this mission to make this park better for everyone. Let’s make this happen and get ready for the 2023 MoBand Season.

GRAFFITI CLASSIC CARS Consignment Service Over the last 3 months, Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum has successfully sold nine classic cars through Graffiti USA Car Sales, led by Charlie Fernandes, former owner and operator of County Ford in Ceres, CA. With over 50 years of car sales experience, Charlie and a team of dedicated Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum board members and advisors now utilize their unique expertise to help automobile collectors sell their vehicles for the best possible price. The team provides hands-on support, assisting sellers in evaluating their cars and making recommendations when cosmetic or mechanical improvements can significantly increase the vehicle’s desirability and sale price. Cars for sale are displayed alongside the museum’s permanent collection of vehicles, viewable to the public every Friday and Saturday from 10 AM-4 PM and by appointment Monday-Thursday. Each car features a special placard, including the sale price and vehicle features. A salesperson is available to answer any questions, provide test drives, and complete all necessary sales and licensing documents. Cars for sale are listed using various websites and publications, including Hemmings and Cruisin’ News, and multiple websites to increase interest and sales traffic. As a result, buyers have traveled from as far away as Los Angeles to purchase vehicles from Graffiti USA, and prospective buyers call to inquire and schedule appointments to view the cars for sale from all over the United States. Graffiti USA Car Sales charges sellers a nominal fee for the consignment of their vehicle. All proceeds earned from vehicle sales help cover the renovation and buildout of the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum. The sales team generously donates their time and expertise to support

Thank You Vito...

I love our local businesses. These are the people that make our community thrive. When I was in high school, we had to sell advertisements for the Beyer Band Marathon and the first ad I ever sold was to Vito’s Tuxedos. That was back in 1977. Opened in 1972, Vito Baccelleri took over the business opened by his father in 1972. Since then, he has been helping our community dress sharp, outfitting countless people in tuxedos along with Sylvia Titus and his expert tailor team. Vito has donated to so many local organizations over the years, including the MAMA Awards and so many others. He donated most of his inventory to local organizations that help new job applicants. He has always been a great community supporter, member of Modesto Sunrise Rotary and has always been keen to volunteer and serve in Modesto. Modesto has always been keen to support Vito’s Tuxedo. We will miss this great local business that can be an example of how to do it right. Thanks Vito. FOLLOW US:

When They Listen

SONG WRITER VIEW

I have opened sold-out shows in support of national artists. That all feeds my soul for many different reasons. But, there is nothing like being in an intimate setting where you can see the audience’s faces, they are hanging on your every word and you can feel the laughter and appreciate their tears because they too have experienced what you are singing about. I had the honor and the pleasure to perform with my good friend, Rick Fletcher on guitar, at the Haggin Museum on July 21. No one spoke a word while we performed. Everyone’s eyes were forward. No one was on their phone unless they were taking pics, videos or streaming. There was no painting or crafting going on. No one had food in their hands. We were surrounded by beautiful art and beautiful people who were engaged, they were there because they sought me out. They came to listen. I had the time of my life. A memory was etched into my heart. They were polite and gracious and generous with their attention and appreciation. It felt like the old days, like the first time. Let’s bring back the listening concerts. Let’s open listening venues. Music for the sake of music. No exhibitionist solos, no light shows, no “Hello F-ing Modesto!” No smoke show to hide inadequacy. We deserve it, we want it. Let’s do it. I hope to see you at the Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market on August 6 from 9 am to noon. I’ll be playing an intimate outdoor show on the lawn of the Gallo Center for the Arts Brown Bag Summer Concert Series 2022 at the Modesto Rotary Music Garden at noon. On August 27 from 7-8 pm, Gary Nelson and I will be giving you some tasty acoustic offerings at Lucca Winery in Ripon brought to you by Red Tie Arts. Thanks for listening.

Celebrating 10 Years of StocktonCon

By Patty Castillo Davis

I’ve been a musician my entire life. I started humming melodies and making up lyrics by the time I was two years old. I started writing poetry and singing in organized musical groups in elementary school and started to refine my work in middle school. When I started performing as a solo artist in my teens I became heightened in my awareness of the magic of applause. The first time someone presented me with flowers after a performance, I started to get intoxicated by the adulation. It was thrilling and daunting at the same time. Outside of the fascination with the clapping and gifting-I felt HEARD. The public was genuinely paying attention to my words and melodies and the stories and views I had to share. There is no feeling better than hearing a theater full of people, a majority of whom you do not know, singing your lyrics as if they’ve been listening to your recordings for years. This, to me, is the best that it gets. Performing is a privilege and the validation of applause is the approval that all the hard work and barriers and navigation amid inequity is worth it. I have performed at festivals for tens of thousands of people. I have performed at the Vatican for His Holiness Pope John Paul II. I have produced unparalleled segments for the Modesto Area Music Award live shows.

StocktonCon is celebrating 10 years of geeky fun at the Stockton Arena on August 13-14th 11 am-5 pm each day. Overwhelming fan support has helped StocktonCon move from a one-day event at the University of the Pacific in 2012, to one of the top pop culture events on the West Coast, bringing thousands of fans of comics, cosplay, sci-fi and fantasy to Stockton Arena each year. Every year Mike Millerick and his team bring some of the best guests in geekdom to Stockton and this year being the 10-year anniversary they have spared no expense. The announcement of their first guest Ron Pearlman(Hellboy, Sons of Anarchy, Blade II, Conan the Barbarian and voice acting in more animated series and video games than I have space for) got people excited once again for this event. Add to that Jon Harder(Napoleon Dynamite, Blades of Glory), Bary Bostwick(Rocky Horror Picture Show, Spin City), Karyn Parsons(Fresh Prince of Bel Air) and Ryan Hurst(Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy). If that wasn’t enough WWE Hall of Famers JBL and Mickie James will be at the show as well. But wait there’s more, you can not have a comic con without creators the legendary

Arthur Adams(Batman/Fantastic Four), Amy Chu(Rick and Morty/KISS/Wonder Woman), and Lee Kohse(Star Wars/Speed Racer) and many others. This is just a short list of the number of guests that will be available for autographs pictures and more. A large array of artists, exhibitors and special guests will once again be in attendance at StocktonCon. More than 200 exhibitors and artist booths will be a part of the fun – with fans in attendance able to find lost treasures, comic books, action figures, Funko pops and much more.

FIT VIEW It’s been an odd scene at various tennis courts lately and I’m sure I was not the only one to do a double take. What I saw was this new kind of fun fitness called pickleball. It looks to me like a cross between tennis, badminton, and ping pong and all that happens on a tennis court. After some research, I found it appears to have as many rules of the game as any other competitive sport. Hey! I guess that’s what makes it so fun. All you need is a paddle, pickleball, and a net. Below are a few basic rules to help you along on your outdoor family fun fitness of pickleball adventures. Mind you this new sport will give you a great workout as you may find yourself chasing after the pickleball to get your game on. The additional plus to it is that it’s played outdoors so you’re able to enjoy some fresh air as well as our California sunshine. What I found interesting about this new sports craze is how it got its name. One strong opinion I found on the internet is that when the game was in its infancy the game creator had a dog named Pickle. Well, Pickle, the dog, would totally get into the game as the ball went out of play or out of bounds Pickle would go fetch it. WOW! I’d say sign him up as a “ball boy” at the next

Basic Rules Of The Game.

Rule #1: The ball must stay inbounds. Rule #2: There should be one bounce per side. Rule #3: Serving must be done at the baseline. Rule #4: The serve can’t land in the novolley zone. Rule #5: The game ends at 11 or 15 points.

BARGAIN VIEW It’s August Already?!

By Monica Barber

It’s the part of summer, where everyone says: “It’s August already?!” but don’t give up on summertime fun just yet. In this final month of the summer, Modesto really shines brightly. There are fun cultural, musical, cinematic and outdoor experiences and the best part is that these things are available at a bargain. Check out some of the fun things to do. Starting the month is National Night Out on August 2nd. This annual event seeks to promote cooperation between the community and law enforcement. From 6-9 p.m., neighborhoods across the nation are encouraged to step outside, participate in some activities and spend time getting to know the neighbors in order to prevent neighborhood crime in our community. There is a variety of ways to participate: block events cookouts, barbeques, and gathering. For additional information, to register your neighborhood event in your area: https://www.modestogov.com/295/ National-Night-Out Modstock festival returns live and loud on August 7th. This free annual music event is a local favorite showcase that includes 30+ VMI bands as well as dozens more local area professional bands along with food, art and crafts. Enjoy a Sunday in Graceada Park by checking out this all-ages event!

The show will run from 10 am to 8 pm. Info: 209-543-2066 or www.modstock.org. Joining a Drum Circle is a fun and great way to participate in the community. Drum Love will be holding their free monthly drum circle in the MoRo Music Garden in front of the Gallo Center on August 20th. From 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. all attendees all are encouraged to come, bring their own instrument or join in by chanting, singing or clapping. There will be extra drums or percussion to use on site. Because the MoRo Music Garden is a musical space there are seven built-in instruments in the garden that will be available for use. Info: https://fb.me/e/3u89nrf3Z Getting outdoors means less screen time because it doesn’t if you’re watching a movie outside. Come check out Movies in the Park at Graceda park. This free family film series Friday nights at Mancini Bowl is one of Modesto’s favorite events. The series returns on August 19th with a showing of Disney’s Encanto. Enjoy a family favorite every Friday night under the stars through September 23rd. Bring the entire family and enjoy the last days of Summer with a unique experience. The Croods: A New Age shows 8/26. Films begin at dusk. Movie info: (209) 577-5344 or recreation@modestogov.com

What’s up Modesto! I hope you have all enjoyed your summer. I know I have. I love living in this beautiful city because there¹s so much to do here, and there¹s always something going on! With school starting back up again, I know it can feel stressful to go back into that environment, but there is still so much to enjoy here. There are many things to pass the time. One of my new favorite activities to do is playing tennis. Now I am no tennis player, but it¹s still fun to try new things. Modesto has many tennis courts that are completely free to use. I usually go to the one at Roosevelt park or Graceada park. Both of these spaces are well lit when the sun is down. I prefer to practice in cooler temperatures, and these courts are very nice. This is an awesome activity and super good for you. But, don¹t forget to bring your sunblock and a hat if you plan on playing mid-day! Be sure to look and find a tennis court near you. With this hot weather we are having, there¹s no better way to cool off than taking a dip in the water. Another place I recently discovered this summer is Mavis Stouffer park. Stouffer is a beautiful park that has nature sightings and a river. It is super fun to swim in or even use the rope swing! If you get tired of the water, there are also many

Time for Tennis By Grace McNamera

sports fields and volleyball nets to use. This is also a cool place to go for a nature walk. There are multiple trails you can take that are gorgeous. You can even use their picnic tables and bring some food into the picnic pavilion. This is a great place for kids, or adults. There¹s lots of shade and room to run around. It is located at 1000 Stouffer street. It¹s a beautifully maintained park, and I highly recommend checking it out! I hope you all enjoyed your summer!

Progress and Survival Mary Layton Some days are hard to take. I am sure that’s true for all of us these days. It’s been so hot and the news is mostly bad. The constant Spam Risk calls are annoying. We pray that things will get better and they will in time. Nothing stays the same forever. Staying in the moment is all we can do. Putting one step in front of the other. Focusing on the good stuff! Little by little we learn and progress. Sometimes I search in my wise books for a larger view on things. One of my favorite books is the TAO TE CHING, a book written in China more than 2000 years ago. It is one of the true classics in the world of spiritual literature. Scholars believe the author was Lao Tzu (“Old Master”). The translation makes the language still sound fresh and up to date. Here is Chapter 71: “To realize that our knowledge is ignorance This is noble insight. To regard our ignorance as knowledge, This is mental sickness. Only when we are sick of our sickness shall we cease to be sick.

The Sage is not sick; being sick of sickness; This is the secret of health.” The TAO TE CHING is an amazing book, speaking about life’s possibilities. Sometimes the meaning is clear, sometimes it is obscure. To understand you have to approach it with a still mind. It is well worth to try to wrap your mind around some of these ancient insights. Those who do may find answers to many of the questions and problems we are faced with today. Who is the Sage? Maybe we all have a Sage living inside of us. Top 5 Summer Energy Saving Tips

1. The numbers to live by are 78–85. Keep your thermostat at 78 or higher when you’re home. Set it at 85 when you’ll be away for a few hours. 2. Portable and ceiling fans can circulate air and help you feel cooler for a fraction of the cost of air conditioning, but always make sure to turn them off when you leave the room. (Plus, if you install a whole-house fan, you could get a $100 MPower rebate as a bonus.) 3. Avoid heat build-up indoors by keeping your blinds and curtains drawn during the heat of the day and limiting your daytime appliance use. You’d be surprised how much heat ovens, dishwashers and clothes dryers can add to your home. 4. Open windows at night to catch a cooling breeze. 5. If you have a high energy efficient home, on super-hot days, pre-cool your home by running the air conditioner for a short time in the early morning.
