Greetings Modesto I love the holidays. This time of year is so much more important now that the girls are out on their own and the times our whole family gets together means a lot. It is important to keep family traditions alive and those moments special. We are so happy Abbey is well again and back in the Berkeley groove and we are happy when she is home, probably baking in the kitchen. We know we have to share Madison now with Ryan’s family and we are going to make the best of every second. Time goes by fast, so make sure you enjoy the minutes and especially our first annual viewing of “Christmas Vacation”. We get so many notes about bringing back retro holidays, so we did. We are all craving our authenticity, our origins and our history seems to be getting more important. This year was really a milestone as Modesto really embraced its American Graffiti and our Rockabilly heritage and history. More importantly, what it can offer in terms of civic pride, tourism revenue, and as a focus for downtown revitalization. ModestoView created the Historic Cruise Route and the Walk of Fame and now we present to you Rockin’ Holidays. Thanks so much to Sierra Pacific, Collins Electric and JCD for the support. We see those old vintage photos and we want to bring it back. Rockin’ Santa, snow, and everything. We hope you enjoy it. I am so very thankful and proud of our little ViewCrew. The ViewCrew of writers and contributors truly care about making the Modesto area a better place and share their love with our readers and our community. Together, I know we can continue to change Modesto for the better and ModestoView will be a way to promote positive change. Our goal has always been to “Serve Civic Pride Daily”. We celebrate the design and creativity of the amazing Pete Grimaldi who organizes our monthly chaos and the talented Michael J. Mangano who takes a rough idea cocktail napkin sketch and brings it to life. We were honored with three 2014 MARCOM GOLD awards and 3 HERMES GOLD Awards for their creative work and for helping us spread the good news in our community. Finally, I wish you the happiest of Holidays, a Merry Christmas and much thanks to all of our readers that make ModestoView a part of their lives. We thank all of our advertisers that help us bring these ideas to life in print and allow us to keep growing every month so that with every issue, every post on Facebook, every Instagram, Tweet and article, we reach more people each month and spread the good words, deeds, events and happenings. We are so excited to have our new downtown home base at 1218 J Street so we can play an even bigger role in downtown excitement. Thank you for reading and please feel free to share your ideas for a better Modesto and we will get to work. All the best to you and your families,

Modesto Police Chief Galen Carroll told me that he made a vow to never eat a donut while he was in uniform. Well ModestoView readers, he made an exception for you. This season is all about community and looking out for each other. It is about family, friends and local living. This month we celebrate the locally owned family businesses that create these tasty donut treats. We all love and support our local donut shops! That is why Rockin’ Santa took a break in delivering presents all over the world to have a donut with the Chief. Let’s be safe; let’s watch out for each other as these holidays bring peace and safety along with our celebrations and reunions. The ViewCrew wishes you a safe and fun season. We thank the MPD for providing their ’57 Chevy Cruiser for our cover and a guest appearance by Chief Carroll. Photo illustration by Michael J Mangano, Donuts provided by We Donuts. ModestoView would not be possible without the generous support of Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group. We are a family owned warehousing and logistics company, serving some of the best companies in the USA. We are responsible community citizens, supporting arts and community programs in Modesto that make our city stronger.

I don’t know about you but the holiday sea- come a long way in handling difficult situson always does something to me. This is especially true as the years go by and I get older. I tend to feel a bit softer and not only because of the inevitable weight gain that comes with eating way too much pie. Last night for example I was working at a local coffee shop and I noticed a man that looked exactly like Santa Claus. I didn’t sit in his lap or hug him (that would have been weird) but I did sit and chat with him for a while and when I left, I left him with a few donuts that were given to me earlier in the day. Maybe I was just trying to be sure I was on the right side of his naughty and nice list. Maybe I will finally get the semi truck full of cookies that I have been asking for since I was a kid. If you have read my last couple of columns you know that this season is also special to me and my girlfriend and I because we have a baby on the way. Next year she will be eight months old on Christmas and she will no doubt get spoiled silly. I am thrilled about buying fluffy dresses and shiny shoes and starting new traditions as a family. Maybe I will dress up as Santa next year. That would either make her smile or scar her for life. I should probably think about that a little more. A short, fat gnome-shaped Santa might cause her nightmares forever. I don’t want that to happen. What I really want during the holidays is my health to stay stable. I have appointments in Modesto and San Francisco all month long and that worries me. I have
MODESTO ROCKIN’ HOLIDAY
ations better but would I be able to deal with a negative diagnosis or bad test results this time of year? I don’t need to balance mashed potatoes and depression or finger sandwiches and sadness. I need to enjoy myself and stay calm. Let’s enjoy this holiday season as a community and have fun with it. Take the kids to see Santa somewhere interesting that you won’t ever forget and get a million pictures taken.
Bass Pro Shop in Manteca is offering a free Santa experience that includes free photos in a building full of sharp objects and guns, Modesto Harley Davidson will have a Santa that could pass for a character on Sons of Anarchy. Vintage Faire has combined efforts with a cable channel and is now allowing parents to press a button on an app instead of standing in line and Modesto’s Rockin’ Christmas downtown will give kids a chance to sit in a cool sled with Santa as his rockabilly elves serve up candy and photos. Have a ho ho happy holiday and don’t let the stress of things get to you and make it a miserable experience. Focus less on gifts and more on hugs. Do whatever it takes to make a child smile. I’ll be here planning my Santa suit for next year. If you need me follow me on Facebook at: facebook.com/rporraswriter or on Twitter as @writerlifeco. You can also send me an email at ruben@modestoview.com - especially if you need a physical address to send cookies to.
GoModesto! Giving for the Holidays
The best way to truly help the needy this time of year is to give to the organizations that help the most people and use their money the wisest. There are meals and services available every day and you know that the money you give actually goes to food and shelter. ART December is a key shopping month. by Jim Christiansen December is a key shopping month. Here ing Art Walk. Consider a White Elephant of the original PRAP lois my annual suggestion: consider buying art from local artists for holiday presents. If you missed Mod Shop last month, note in our calendar there are a lot of other craft and art events. That includes the annual Dickens Faire December 6, where I am splitting a booth with artist/author Linda Knoll. December 6th, the FASM Creative Battle Art Show, Graffiti Battle, Toy Drive and Music held at “Love Thy Neighbor” headquarters on Page Court in Modesto. This is an ambitious new nonprofit event. Check both if you can. In the spirit of giving, artist Janet Spooner recently donated one of her oil paintings to a benefit raffle at McHenry Bowl, to benefit a family in need. That raised $575 in that one event. Congrats! Mistlin Gallery features its members in “Home for the Holidays”. “Chella” is the headline artist at Trewin Framery with a reception December 8. Shop downtown dur-
gift from Crow Trading. Several off the map spots downtown have local art on the walls, with price tags. A lot of art is for sale down at DEVA, Tokyo Express, & Chartreuse Muse. ModestoView is working toward some Retro Christmas décor. Look for it. At Art Walk last month, my favorite stop was the Crossroads Country Quilters show at Mistlin Gallery. If you missed it, check out their event at Centre Plaza in January. www.crossroadscountryquilters.com. One stop I had to check out was Preservation Coffee, where I’ve noted art sales happening the last few months. November artist Julie Falconer took her show down early. (But posted a statement why on Facebook if you’re interested.) The venue chose to leave the walls bare, and I personally hope folks will check out Julie’s work, and enjoy coffee there. I noticed the expansion of the gallery and affiliated Recovery businesses at the Camera Center location. Five times the size
cation at 13th and J. Nicole Slater opened her new studio, The Artist’s Loft, on the second floor of Slater’s Furniture at 1605 J Street. She is offering private and group instruction and activities. For more information, see www. NicoleSlater.com. I like the space, and wish I had that much room here at my garage studio. Nicole is one of the artists at the 2015 Stanislaus County Artist Open Studio event happening next April. If you’d like to be included on the map, rtist entry deadline is January 15. Open Studio is also seeking sponsors and advertisers for the map program. I’d like to thank the Oak Valley Art Society for inviting me to their monthly meeting, held in the Escalon Library on the third Saturday of the month, to do a watercolor workshop. I got to bring all my eccentric tools for the large format abstracts I do, like rollers, fan brushes, wallpaper seamer, and
water spillage, to show how I actually work off my dining room table. It was fun, and I hope to do more workshops in the future! My 35 minutes was well attended, with 24 artists, and extended over an hour. For more information, send requests to OVAS, P.O. Box 990, Oakdale, CA 95361. I found out at the OVAS meeting, that Auld Lang Syne was born in Scotland! Oakdale Open Studio Artist James “Scotty” Higgins passed away November 4. A very interesting character, and avid oil painter, and his work will be cherished. Buy art for Christmas. It’s the greatest gift to pass on.

BAR
Why Give When You Can Receive? Redwood Café By Kate Serpa Photos by Philip Johnson
On the subject of holiday gift giving, Phil and I were presented with a rather thought provoking question recently: What, in your humble opinion, is the American contribution/gift to the culinary world? You figure Italy has wine, France has cheese (these are stereotypical examples, I know)-- but what are we bringing to the big table? Hamburgers are, in essence, a hot sandwich and French fries and anything potato-related is, to me, strictly Irish territory; so what is our gift? Nick Richars, of Redwood Café , believes with convincing force that, surprisingly, it’s the cocktail. “We created the cocktail -- before the cocktail most spirits were consumed as-is. We perfected the cocktail equation of sugar, water, bitters, and spirits.” You hear that, Modesto? Our gift to the world are superbly crafted cocktails -- and it’s our duty to enjoy them! Richars, a longtime Modesto staple in the wine and spirits circuit, is the beverage director at the Redwood Café , overseeing 150 selections of wine and a bar full of top-notch nectar. Redwood Café is, for lack of a better word, beautiful. The bar area features colorful lights playing over a wood-topped and amply and uniquely stocked bar, high top lounge tables have a window gazing view of enclosed outdoor patio seating by foliage and a water fountain to boot -- venturing to the west side of the restaurant, through the main dining, presents cafe tables under flower laden trees. The difficult part here, you see, is trying to focus on the bar proper. Redwood Café offers, states Richars,
8
a number of different venues within the restaurant -- expanding from extravagant weddings to intimate dinners, thereby accommodating just about any request. The amount Redwood Café offers is staggering, so I’m sticking strictly to the bar area because that’s where the booze is. And the booze is beautiful as well. One drawing aspect of the Redwood Café bar, Richars believes, is a blend of creating notably exceptional craft cocktails through specialty spirits from small producers and a detailed approach to the creation and history of mixology. “Bartending is a trade craft,” states Richars. “Techniques are passed down and taught.” Exemplary technique is evident in every cocktail Richars pours out, combining equal parts alcohol and history -- a Charles Goodnight Bourbon Old Fashioned, enhanced by an orange peel and one of those fun extra large blocks of ice; the Redwood Gin and Tonic with Fever Tree tonic water, grapefruit, rosemary, thyme, and juniper berries; a Corpse Reviver No. 2 with gin, fresh lemon juice, Cocchi Americano, and an absinthe rinse; and a stirred gin martini that would throw its shaken counterpart straight on its’ watery back. Needless to say
MODESTO ROCKIN’ HOLIDAY
Redwood is not the place to drink and dash -- questions and discussions about libations are encouraged, and Richars seems to know more about spirits than do about members of my immediate family. Though Redwood Café has been open as a catering venue for 20 years, the revamped bar and patio area are pretty spanking new. Notable times to experience the bar are Redwood’s Wine Down Wednesdays, a weekly wine tasting featuring six selections, their Tuesday - Saturday Happy Hour, and especially their recently implemented
weekend late night, featuring pizza, desserts, and delicious boozes that goes as late as you’re willing stay. And so, Modesto, Phil’s and my holiday gift to you is an open invitation to experience cocktail excellence at Redwood Café with Nick Richars. And feel free to order the fun expensive stuff, too; Phil said he would foot the bill. 4342 Dale Road, Modesto, CA (209) 545-9248 www.redwood-cafe.com

CHEF Dewz Wine and Dine Wonderland!
FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: See Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month
by Dana Johnson
Dear Santa, I can explain... Yes, thoughts of sugar plums danced in my head and I could hear ring-ting-tingling, too! Come on, its lovely weather for a Mercedes sleigh ride together with you, while friends are calling “Yoo hoo!” After drinking around the wine bar that brings almost as much bliss as the Christmas tree, we frolic and play the Modesto way, singing joy to the world from inside the Dewz dining wonderland! Now if you were able to follow all that; you may already know all about the new Mercedes minibus company (seats up to 14 guests!) www.groupvago.com is located right here in Modesto! Owner, Robert Waterhouse, has brought this luxury style alternative transportation to shuttle his patrons safely and plushy to and from magical destinations whether they are near or far! So I simply gave him a call, got my holiday fancy on, red scarf and all, with drinkie in hand J. We picked up Modesto View’s own mega-talented photographer, Michael Mangano (MJ!) and headed to Dewz! Per my request, Modesto View’s very own Santa all year round, Chris Murphy, joined us for the Dewz experience he’s already been privy to. Then friends of the View, Michelle VanArtsdalen and Susie Fagundes of Intrinsic Elements happened to be there so naturally we invited them to sample the parade of desserts before us. All accompanied with perfectly paired dessert wines, as Dewz features 40 cordials and ports. Yes, we all moaned as we spooned into each dessert made from scratch; Cinnamon Toast Bread Pudding, Tiramisu Parfait, and the Gateaux Riche all having the illus-

trious title of “Dana~licious!” Thank you to Nathan Egerer who served us saying; “You shouldn’t have to touch anything except to your lips in the Dewz experience.” Dewz has been one of downtown Modesto’s premier favorite restaurants for the past 18 years! Owner, Scott Aspesi, husband to Christine, dad to Kelcey 16 and Taylor 13, and son to Judy and employer to 41 employees; Scott still managed to find time to chat with me! He told me of the importance of his family, his gratitude to his Mom as he called her the backbone to Dewz, and how he appreciates his devoted longtime employees, especially Dewz partner, Chef Vincent who has been there since the beginning as he just showed up and said “I’m going to work here!”. Go figure that Scott now refers to him as the best chef ever! Dewz was named after Scott’s only brother Dewayne who passed away too young at age 26 from leukemia in 1996. Dewayne was known for his cool ‘hair-do’s’ and the name Dewz was affectionately born. Ironically, the Modesto View was born in the original Dewz back in 1998 over many amazing meals & meetings as Chris Murphy fondly remembers.
MODESTO ROCKIN’ HOLIDAY
Mo View signature question: 1st to Nathan, Beatles or Stones? Beatles, but the Stones are EPIC! So we high-fived! 2nd to Scott; STONES! It was that simple. But Chris can still come play his Beatles songs at Dewz as they showcase live music on Fri/Sat nights! Find me there indulging in the bleu cheese butter crust NY Steak, crispy duck legs, divine veal escalopes, and, NOT OR baked brie! So Dana~licious! Wow, thinking of all involved in this fine dining experience, I think the Group Van Go is the only way to go! So you see Santa Baby, I’ve been an awful good girl!

WOW what a great year in entertainment it has been. The Live Music Scene was unsure for a lot of people with Fat Cat not really hosting regular shows as the year started out. Nic Padilla Promotions had shows booked at the Sky Lounge which we all had high hopes for, but unfortunately no shows saw the light of day there. Spinnakers and The Other Place filled the void for metal and hard rock bands and became the goto spot for many local promoters. The Brewhouse kept live music coming to downtown on a regular basis along with Barkin’ Dog and Cafe Deva. Big props to all the local business owners who not only allow bands to play but truly support “Live Local Music”. We saw local acts like Good Luck Thrift Store selling out the State and Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame playing the Gallo Center not once but twice. Patty Castillo Dav has wowed the crowd at the Bob Hope Theater opening for Los Lonely Boys and Kenny Wayne Shepherd (no surprise why she won a MAMA this year). The BrewHaHa celebrated one year in October and is

already booked into February of 2015 with plans to take the show on the road at other brewpubs in Northern California. Joan Jett, Huey Lewis and the News, B.B, King, Alice Cooper and other greats have graced local stages proving you do not need to travel to the Bay to see legendary performers. The Modesto Area Music Awards celebrated 15 years of local music in October. It is the holiday season! We stuffed ourselves a little too much with turkey, mash potatoes and pecan pie and it’s officially okay to put up the lights and Christmas decorations. I am encouraging every one of you to shop local and even more so give local. Pick up a CD or T-Shirt from one of our great local and very talented musicians. They make great gifts and stocking stuffers. Here are some great opportunities to have a fun night out and do some shopping at the same time: Friday the 12th at The Brewhouse a rare Juno Circus performance with Callbox and Ray Vazira. (This also happens to be my birthday so come on out and celebrate.) Also over on Yosemite St at the Other Place and Spinnakers 209 Productions is having their annual Toy Drive with Triple D(2014 Blue Collar), Klytoralyk, Nothing But Losers (2011 Metal), Brutal Innocence, Bavmorda, Dying Image, Aborticide, Sworn in Black and Perfect Nightmare (2014 Youth Band) 2 Venues, 9 Bands 1 Great Cause. Saturday the 13th head on out to Chuck’s Place (aka The Local) in Manteca and catch E.A.R.L.(2007 Rock), Terrible Timing (who just finished mastering their new E.P.) and Los Punks all have
music you can pick up and give away. The Valley Favorite Moonshine Bandits (2007 Hip Hop) return to the Fat Cat on the 13th with Pruno and Disturbing the Peace. Friday December 19th the last BrewHaHa of the Year will be hosted by Jimmie Menezes (2014 Comedy) hosting along with local favorites “Medi” Mike Boris, Gloria Magana, Joe Luzzi, Rusty Bawls and Jason Soh. Saturday the 20th Triple D rocks Nino’s
with their last show of the year. Check out the ModestoView Calendar for tons more going on in and around Modesto. Remember that it is just a short drive to Stockton (Empresso, Bus Stop, Whirlows), Merced (The Partisan), Jamestown (the Gypsy Shack) to get out of town and catch some great entertainment. You don’t have to leave the greater 209 for great entertainment. If you are wanting to try your hand at performing or trying out some new material check out one of the areas’ great open mics at Speak Easy (Tuesday), Cow Track (Wednesday), Minnie’s and Empresso (Thursday) and the Queen Bean and Chucks (Sunday). 2015 is going to be a great year! Nic Padilla is going to be focusing on putting on bigger shows about once a month starting with Saving Abel at the end of January. Beat Happy! Music will be bringing The Toasters back to The Brewhouse on February 2nd. Joining them will be Modesto’s own Nesta. There are a few fresh new bands that I think everyone will be excited to see busting out on the scene along with all your favorites continuing to bring the best the Valley has to offer month after month. Remember: “Friends don’t let Friends miss Great Shows”. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Keep Rocking in the 209!

GoModesto! Sierra Pacific Goes Solar
We are so very thankful to Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group for supporting ModestoView and for giving back to the community. Now, Sierra Pacific is going to give electricity back to the power grid as 100,000 sq ft of solar panel are now live on the roof of their Patterson warehouse. This is a monster 823 kw system made up of over 2700 panels. This is a great sustainable move which will make more electricity available to the local grid and is the equivalent of 36,000m000 fewer car miles or 41 million air miles or 793,000 trees planted over 25 years! Pretty cool! Smart, sustainable solar is perfect for the Central Valley. Congrats Sierra Pacific!

in the 50’s and 60’s? The lights, the stores, and the excitement have become distant memories. Modesto is getting its groove back and we are embracing our inner American Graffiti and our Rockabilly sensibilities. We want to bring this back and let the old times blend with the new times and create a new downtown experience that can grow for decades to come. ModestoView created the Historic Cruise Route and the Walk of Fame and now we present to you “Rockin’ Holidays”. We are bringing the good times back, and we take YOU back to the retro rockin’ times in Downtown Modesto when the cars were cool, the lights were bright, and the sounds of the holidays rang in the air. There will be new lights, garland, retro decorations, music, local vendors and tasty treats and many memories to create. And best of all, it will snow and twinkle, and you will be able to meet Rockin Santa and his Rockin’ Elves. Opening night will be December 6th in 10th St Place immediately following the Modesto Rockin’ Holiday Parade at 8:00 pm. There are holiday events all day in downtown Modesto on the 6th, beginning with Breakfast with Santa, the Dick-

lives local and we love doing business with our friends. We had fun with our Chief of Police and Rockin’ Santa with their donuts just to show that like local coffee, local donuts are an important and very tasty part of our community and part of our history. Each of our local donut shops has a great story, and a family that owns and operates it. Recently a large national chain came to town and our community rallied around our local shops. Our local shops don’t use frozen dough and bake their donuts by hand each night. All of the flavors are local and we, our kids and even our parents have grown up with our local donut shops. They are part of our local ritual. We introduce you to a few of our local shops and next time you want a donut, try one of these or another locally owned donut.

DC DONUTS When she was a little girl Sammy Meas would pile up blankets and take naps in the corner of the kitchen in her Father’s donut shop that he operated on 9th Street in Modesto for over 20 years. As she grew up, the beauty industry captured Meas’ attention and she became a successful cosmetologist until recently when the smell of fresh donuts and the taste of sugary toppings called her back. Four months ago, Meas opened DC Donuts in Riverbank and she is determined to make it work for as long as her father did. In addition to delicious donuts, Meas also serves croissants that can be ordered stuffed with items like cheese, eggs, ham and jalapenos or unstuffed. Other planned items include a line of custom cakes and gourmet cupcakes. For something special try the Tiger Tail bar at DC Donuts. Think about a chocolate donut and a plain donut braided together and covered in a sweet glaze. Why can’t these things be calorie-free? 2761 Patterson Rd Riverbank, CA 95367 (209) 300-9600

S T U Mr. T’s DELICATE DONUT
Sandy’s
If donut shops were prize fighters, Mr. T’s Delicate Donut could easily be the heavyweight champion. The smallish shop on the corner of Standiford and Tully has a bit of a cult following among fans that absolutely will not go anywhere else. Visitors to Modesto have written hundreds of online reviews about the business and it has been featured in a number of magazines and newspapers. Lately, food bloggers armed with iPhones and hearty appetites have taken to making Mr. T’s a focus of their work. Recently, a national chain caused a wave of controversy by opening up shop across the street from Mr. T’s. Online petitions demanded that they change their location and blasted them for what some called unethical business practices. The crazy thing is that all of the drama surrounding the mom and pop versus corporate giant battle actually made more people aware of Mr. T’s. New customers flooded the business and discovered that everything they serve is made fresh on-site (the corporate giant across the street has their donuts shipped in from an off-site bakery) and that quality is more than a concern - it is a way of life. Put down this magazine and head over to Mr. T’s. Order a maple bar covered with strips of real bacon or a cinnamon roll that was apparently given a long bath in tasty chocolate. Support the home team. Mr. T’s never closes and their clientele is diverse and always excited. As a proud Modestan, I promise you that my newborn daughter (slated to arrive in April of next year) will take her first bite of a donut at Mr. T’s as soon as she is old enough. I can’t wait to see her little face light up! 3507 Tully Rd Modesto, CA 95356 (209) 522-1614
by Blia Vang: Sandy’s Donuts & Ice Cream has been family owned and operated since 1984. For many of the se years both Ratsamy and Lily, a husband and wife team; kept the shop open 7 days a week. Alt hough, recently they now close the second and last Monday of the month, they hope that their custom ers understand. Ratsamy, the doughnut shop’s long-time baker, works endless hours taking his time to perfect each and every dou ghnut to taste. Celina, their daughter who is currently attending Downey High School, explain s how many of her study sessions were done at the doughnut shop. She recalls, “ever since I was in elementary school it’s usually school and then straight to work”. Lik e most family owned busine sses this shop has a strong family uni ty. Sandy’s Donuts & Ice Cre am is well known for their huge apple fritter. The apple fritter is mo re than five inches in diameter, glazed from every angle, and the fritt er is absolutely delicious.

RIYAKI
On Yosemite Boulevard is a staple in the community. For over 25 years, the familyowned business has been serving an interesting mix of fresh-baked don uts and items such as rice bowls and egg rolls. This may seem to be a combination to some, but it is convenient. It’s nice to be able to have a meal and a treat in one place.
Scotty’s looks lost in time and visiting there takes you back as far as the 70s. Bright yellow tables with funky stools have likely been in place forever and faded signs inside and out could use a touch up. Don’t count on an upscale experience here. Co unt on mouth-watering donuts including two that the y are well-known for - their app le fritter and anything with sprinkles. Don’t forget to try the egg rolls. The next time that you anywhere near Kansas Avenue take the time to stop at Panaderia el Rincon and get lost for a while. As soon as you walk in to the business you are hit with the smell of baked goods that are displayed front and center. While donuts are certainly a key feature of the bakery, other items include Pan Dulce (Mexican sweet bread), Mexican cookies and a variety of traditional Mexican cakes. The bakery and several of the businesses near it are owned by the same local Mexican family and they are the go-to stop for many local Mexican families planning celebrations or looking for an after-church sweet snack. As far as donuts go, face-size cinnamon rolls and apple fritters are two types that that are most often sold. They are priced right (less than $2.00) and you may be hard-pressed to finish one in a single sitting. “I used to live near here,” said patron, Vincent Beyers as be nibbled on a cinnamon roll. “This place calls you back. The coolest acoustic lineup I ever saw in Tuesday 12/2 at the State Theater. AmeriModesto was on the night of December 3, 2009. It was the annual B92.9 ‘Acoustic Christmas’ concert held at the Center Plaza. One of my absolute favorite rock bands - Third Eye Blind. A Fine Frenzy. Matt Nathanson. Green River Ordinance. Ingrid Michaelson. All delivering awesome stripped-down sets. Oh, what a spectacular evening that was. This reminds me of a story that I like to tell about Ingrid Michaelson. I saw her perform in Dallas about six months later. She had just reached the end of a song when someone in the crowd must have decided that she was looking a wee bit malnourished, and tried to help her out. He tossed a bag of Chick-Fil-A food up at the stage, and it hit her right in the head! Ingrid was a good sport, though, and proceeded to make up a song about it right there on the spot. She is such a cool character. So I was glad to see that Acoustic Christ-
can Authors, Matt Nathanson, Echosmith and Andy Grammer are on the menu this time around. But I’m sad now because I failed to act quickly enough before tickets sold out. Fortunately, Modesto Unplugged are hosting our own holiday concert, very much like the Acoustic Christmas format. Wednesday December 10 at 7 PM, we present an intimate evening with pop/rock artist Meiko, appearing at the Prospect Theater, 1214 K St. This is her only appearance in the Central Valley on this tour, and we are most honored to have been asked to host her. Two of our area’s brightest young songwriters, Alida McKeon and Francesca Bavaro, will perform a joint opening set. Both of these supremely gifted ladies are grand prize winners of the annual ‘Valley’s Got Talent’ competition; and Francesca also won top prize at the first MUMfest Songwriting Contest earlier this year. ets for this evening will be $12 advance and $15 at the door. Don’t make the same mistake I did - get your tickets before they are gone. Email modestounplugged@yahoo.com or call 209-543-5306 to order Friday 12/12, this year’s MAMA Award winner for Best Singer/Songwriter, Patty Castillo Davis, shares the stage with upand-coming country stars Will Hoge, Haley & Michaels and Seth Alley at a benefit concert presented by Feed Modesto and KAT Country 103. Doors at 7 & music at 8 at the State Theater. Tickets $75 (VIP)/$45/$25. Sunday 12/14, Focus On will present an evening of Brazilian music with As Tres Meninas (The Three Girls) performing jazz infused with bossa nova, baiao, samba and more. The showcase will also feature dining and a full bar, with the Brazilian national drink, the Caipirinha, as the featured cocktail. Jacob’s Fine Dining, 2501 McHenry Ave. Doors at 4 PM, music at 5. Tickets $35/45, reserved tables of 8 $235/315. For reservations call John at 209-543-4261. Saturday 12/27, the MUMF present our
second annual Elegy showcase. This is essentially the musical equivalent of the slideshow at the Academy Awards highlighting the actors/directors who have departed in the past year. A group of local songwriters including The Heartbeats (featuring Patty Castillo Davis & Brenda Francis), Anthony Edwards, Chris Farris, Randy Mandy Band, and the Valley Forged supergroup will perform the songs of Pete Seeger, Phil Everly and other artists who left this life in 2014. We’ll get going at 7 PM at Peer Recovery Art Project, 1222 J St. Admission is $7. Last year’s tribute night was a fantastic evening, so don’t miss out this year. Happy holidays!

AUTHOR
“The Happiness Machine” by Ken White
For Ray Bradbury and my little brother.
“What is happiness?” my college philosophy teacher asked rhetorically. “Money, health, a fancy car, a thin waistline, a meaningful career, doing for others? As the song says,” he continued, “money can’t buy you love. Or happiness. Is happiness getting what you want, or wanting what you’ve got?” We, his students and the target of his question, sheepishly looked at each other, our hands, or the ceiling. None of us wanted to volunteer an answer, probably because we really didn’t know, perhaps didn’t care (it was the Sixties after all), and even more likely because it was our last class before Christmas break. How could this bozo ask a question like that just before the clock would strike the hour and set us free to happily enjoy our holiday? I asked myself, echoing his rhetorical. For me, the answer was always elusive; always just out of reach. When, in fact, it was there the whole time, right in front of me, just waiting for me to see. And when I finally did, it was so obvious. I always came home for the holidays. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” was my anthem. And Thanksgiving and Easter and Summer. Some of my classmates never went home. I did. And I continued to as an adult. As long as Mom and Dad had a home, I had a place to go. Years later, my then college girlfriend and now my ex-wife would say that our real home was the home we were living in together, not my parent’s home or her parent’s home; not the “family” home. She was right, of course. But, for me, the stubborn and oppositional child, Modesto and the house on the street next to Pike Park, were always home and would always be. So, here I was, home from college for Christmas. All my siblings were there, with their significant others; some of whom stuck, some of whom didn’t. Gary, my best friend and college room-mate, was there with his girlfriend and six-pack of Bud. There were a couple other high school buddies because this was the gathering place. The family room was cozy-warm and smelled of woodsmoke and chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon and pine, beer and cigarettes. Bing Crosby crooned through the ceiling speakers. The egg nog and ribboned hard candy tasted so very sweet. The blanket-draped Naugahyded couch felt soft and familiar. The colored lights glowed on the tree. The mistletoe hung with care. I was in safe harbor and it was good. I stepped out the family room door onto the small concrete backyard patio to get a breath of fresh air and gaze at the witnessing moon. I turned to look back on the scene inside. The large, segmented, rectangular picture window framed everyone and everything. And there it was. All of it. And it was working. In all its glory. The Happiness Machine. It had been around and running from day one; not always well, but still in operation. Sometimes, it needed tinkering and adjusting and oiling. When it was in tune, it was comforting and reassuring in its perpetual motion. It was something you could count on. Always, and mostly, when it mattered. For me, happiness would always be family, friends, and home and my heart would always be there. I realized then, and still believe now, that it wasn’t about getting what you want, but wanting what you’ve got. It wasn’t about having what you want, but wanting what you have. I felt sorry for those who didn’t. “Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.” Art Linkletter, Radio/TV Personality and Author

ALLAGES Holiday Spirit
I hope you all had a memorable Thanksgiving! Continuing with the being grateful vibe, my thoughts turn to giving back. Everyone is getting excited about Christmas, but there are people who don’t wake up to presents under the tree. Instead of only thinking of ourselves through the holidays, we should help out those who aren’t having the traditional Christmas. As Brian Tracy once said, “Love only grows by sharing. You can only have more for yourself by giving it away to others”. I can relate to this in many ways. One recent weekend, the Leo’s Club bought over 70 canned goods and donated them to The House Church. Their outreach organization gives bags filled with food to

people can’t afford to buy it for themselves. Knowing that the food we bought with our savings was going to a good cause we felt we got more than we gave. There are many organizations that are collecting canned goods, so don’t miss out on the opportunity. My favorite thing to do every winter is the Soroptimist Tree with my family at the Vintage Faire Mall. It is a project where you select a child’s name off a Christmas tree that list their needs and wants such as clothing and toys. You then provide gifts for the child based off of their paper. It puts it into perspective that the gifts we are donating will be some if not the only gifts a needy child may receive for Christmas. Doing these projects always get me in the Holiday spirit and remind me that this time of year is about sharing and giving back. See you in 2015!

Holiday time is upon us once again. Brace yourselves for a great month of friends, family and music. I have a few shows to tell you about, starting off with “Latkes and Vodkas” on the 6th at CBS Modesto. This annual event is a benefit for children, and is always a great time. It will feature Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame, Josh Rosenblum Band as well as Kyle Barker. Dressing up is part of the fun of this event every year so, put on your best duds and come shake your tail feathers. On December 13th I am happy to be helping to bring some great local singer/songwriters to Deva for your listening pleasure. This show will feature Patty Castillo Davis, Bethany Joseph and Chris Farris. We are planning on making it a special night with lots of friends and love. Hope to see you there! The final public show of the year for the Cryin’ Shame will be out at The Cow Track
Lounge in Oakdale. We always have a great time at the Track. Charlie, the owner, is one of the best guys to work for ever and the whole crew down there is like family. Please come out and see why I never miss a chance to see a band at this great little place. It’s safe to say that the Cow Track is the heart and soul of Oakdale and that ain’t no small thing. That’s all for me folks, I hope you are surrounded by good friends and love this holiday season.

FIT
An Inspirational Fit by Efren Martinez
Erica Hughes is the founder and co-owner of Get Fit Inspirational Studio. She’s been in fitness for 16 years. She began the journey alone as the lone business owner but recently took on two incredible partners in July of 2014, Tara and Jonathan Crenshaw. Collectively, Erica and her partners have taken the local fitness scene to a new level. I’ve been friends with Erica for some time now and I’ve always been impressed by her determination despite the struggles from her past. Erica is an inspiration. She is a single mother to her son Kai, she coowns and runs a business and still finds the time to get her own fitness in. She is a textbook example of how to get life done in a positive way with no excuses, using her Christian faith. I’ve come across her path at some of the local runs, triathlons and fitness events, and can say she’s amazing and equally impressive in her competitions. Some might think Erica has always been fit and trim, but no she wasn’t always into
living a healthy lifestyle and she struggled very much like most of us in our adolescent years. Erica shared with me: “Growing up, health and wellness hardly made it on my radar. Following a few traumatic events in my early adolescence, I developed addictions to drugs and alcohol. I always felt like such a dichotomy because internally I was deeply struggling but I still played sports and maintained very good grades. I battled so much fear and shame but through my pain I saw people I wanted desperately to help. People that were hurting. I never would have imagined that fitness would have served as the vehicle for me to reach those in need. I turned my life around at 17 and moved from my home town in Colorado
to go to college in California. I had never been a gym member or worked out at a gym more than a handful of times, but I received a $15/month LA Fitness membership opportunity through my new student checking account. I look back and can’t believe they let me become a personal trainer with my two-day certification and no experience, but I thank God that they gave me a chance because that was the beginning of something powerfully beautiful for me. I had a real opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives, and 16 years
later I still thank God every day for the gift of getting to meet people wherever they are at in their lives, and come alongside them to help them reach new heights.” Friends, Erica and I have so much in common. In fact many of you out there might find a little bit of Erica’s past in yourselves. Regardless, she is a breath of fresh air and she gives us all hope of how we can change our lives if we want to, through hard work, faith and living a healthy lifestyle. “I have made nearly every mistake possible. I have taken most steps afraid, but I have taken them anyway. I have hit rock bottoms that I was not sure I could recover from and here is what I know today. DO NOT GIVE UP! Get a vision of a version of yourself that you love. What is that person doing? Think about it, and get as dialed in with it as soon as possible. Then don’t let go of that vision. I am positive that God exists and that He is helping us. You are not alone and you can reach any place that you can see.” Get Fit 2801 McHenry Ave Modesto www.getfitmodesto.com www.facebook.com/GetFitInspiration

the holiday season, some of us are thinking about our New Year’s Resolutions. A study by the University of Scranton reports that 47% of Americans who make resolutions do it for “self-improvement” reasons. That sounds to me like many of us need some zen in our life. But what does that really mean? I met up with Susie Fagundes of Intrinsic Elements to ask her that very question, and how we can all achieve some well-needed zen in 2015. Susie’s definition of zen is quite beautiful. “Zen is peace.” she says. It is being conscious in all that we think, say and do. It is being consciously connected to everyone and everything around us. It gives us the opportunity to experience life from the inside out; to be Spirit having a full human experience. There are some practical ways we can find that inner peace and connectedness in our daily life. Regardless of one’s personal beliefs, you can benefit from meditation. Meditation can be as little as a single moment of inten-
tional quiet. If you find it a challenge to quiet your mind you might use a physical spiritual practice such as chi gong or yoga, until it becomes natural for you to sit and clear your mind. Setting an intention or what is often called a mantra is very powerful. Something positive and easy to remember, that you can recite when you wake up in the morning and before bed, It can be as simple as a word or request for shift , change or healing. As long as it has a special meaning to you. It is said that 70-90% of our thoughts occur in our subconscious, and meditation with a mantra can make those subconscious thoughts obsolete and replace them more relevant conscious thoughts to connect us with that peace we seek. Your mantra will feel very empowering. Your thoughts and words become things...or what is termed “manifestation”. This manifestation can become a selffulfilling prophecy, helping you achieve your inner peace. Your zen. It’s a time-honored tradition that Ms. M visits her favorite man in red and his best lady: Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus! I simply love to catch up with people and it’s a treat to get a peak at the naughty and nice list. This year I stopped by Santa’s HQ in the Vintage Faire Mall to see Santa and discuss his upcoming appearances in Modesto; Check out McHenry Village all month long and The Modesto Senior Citizens Center on December 6th. Since Santa knows you all love giving, he suggested you might enjoy some inexpensive fun between shopping for gifts. Remember, remember the 6th of December. A red-letter day as Modesto heralds the arrival of Christmas joy that promises to delight at no extra cost. Start your morning off right with the Dickens Faire at the McHenry Mansion. More Holiday Happenings Christmas Tree Lane – Ongoing, Ceres Take a drive to Ceres and experience one of the largest decorated neighborhoods to get in the Christmas spirit. There are blocks and blocks of intricately decorated houses and it gets more elaborate every year. Pack up the kids and pile in the family truckster and soak up the scene. Exit Moffett off of Hatch and follow the signs to Christmas Tree Lane. Light Extravaganza – Ongoing, Modesto Thornhill Drive in NW Modesto is the place to take in the most vivid light show this side of Disneyland. The houses on Thornhill Drive (off of Snyder Ave.) are synchronized and tuned in to an FM radio channel. Park your car and walk so you can enjoy the scene and hang out a bit. Make a Special Christmas for a Needy Child – Ongoing, Modesto Soroptomist International of Modesto and Modesto North have opened the Soroptomist Community Christmas Tree at Vintage Faire Mall in Modesto. The tree will only be open through December 19th. This year there are 3100 children’s names on our Tree. Most children are in need of warm clothes and shoes and wish for simple toys. Please visit this giving tree at Vintage Faire Mall. The kiosk is on the second level across from the Food Court and will be open most days from 10am to 9pm. Help give our children a “Magical Christmas Morning”.

Open Early!
DOWNTOWN MODESTO
Many restaurants start serving dinner early so that you can get a nice meal in before the shows and movies that begin at 7 or 7:30.
Open Late!
Downtown Modesto is the place to be late Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. There is live music every night of the week in one of our great clubs or restaurants. After the show, stop and enjoy a nightcap.
Parking
There are parking garages at 9th and L Street, 11th and K Street, 11th and I Street and 12th and H Street. Parking is close to all restaurants!

MODESTO ROCKIN’ HOLIDAY
ModestoView is Downtown There is a new place downtown called ModSpot. This is an expansion of the Peer Recovery Gallery and a partnership with Project YES. This new space will be a community gathering place for art, job training and community support. We are very excited to be opening our new “office” downtown and can’t wait to become more involved in the revitalization of Downtown Modesto. Best of all, we are in the exact location of the legendary Harley’s Records, the store where George Lucas used to buy his records and Bob DeLeon had his Wurlitzer keyboard service. Also in this space will be Tony the Barber and the Good Neighbor Shoe Shine, and we expect our space to be the host of many art and music activities in downtown. Stop by and see us and say hello.
