about something that was created by a person from ModestoUSA? From the north pole to the south, Star Wars is everywhere, dominating the Disney parks, pop culture and heck, the entire galaxy. Even the galaxy next to us is talking about it. Read further in this issue to learn the new 12 Days of Star Wars Christmas we created. Using the Force for a Rockin’ Holiday where Princess Leia skates to the Star Wars theme with Rockin’ Santa on Ice in our own local galaxy makes Modesto one of the best places to be this holiday season. Sure, you can go stand in lines with hours of traffic to ice skate in SF this season, but instead, you can explore downtown Modesto, enjoy fabulous food and drink, catch some falling snow with Rockin’ Santa, catch a great movie about the Modesto of Tattooine and skate into the dark of night and hyperspeed your way home, well ahead of your friends that are still stuck on the Bay Bridge. Yes friends, we have one awesome month on our hands, and we even have 34” of snow in the mountains at the nearby ski areas. Are you as excited as I am for this holiday season? Friends, ModestoView has always taken the lead in what we need to help make Modesto better. We have been championing the need for 10th St to be a beautiful promenade from the Doubletree to the Gallo Center and created the Modesto Historic Cruise Route with a tourist walking tour. We helped create the very first parklets that have now lead to the remodeling of 10th St to attract new business and create better foot traffic. Last year ModestoView with Sierra Pacific and Collins Electric reimagined the world of our retro Christmas holidays and presented Rockin’ Christmas. That was so fun that Jerome and Andrea Murray created Modesto On Ice to be in downtown Modesto

as new businesses are popping up on 10th and 11th St. We now have some momentum. This year we make a new mark creating a new 50 foot tall Rockin’ Tree that we will light up on December 5. We are creating a gathering place, home for music, art, fun, families and visitors from around the world. Yes, friends, we can all make a difference and that is what makes me so proud of ModestoView and our ViewCrew supporters, we can all work together the be the change we want for our city. We ask you to join us, come downtown and celebrate with us. Change your habits, stroll our streets that have new lights and decorations and most importantly, tell a friend and spread the word. Stop and thank our ViewCrew writers, as they do this for their passion for a better Modesto. We are the solution. We are all the ones that change forever how and what people think about Modesto. We need to encourage people that don’t get involved to do so. So let’s explore, let’s shop local, let’s walk our streets, let’s ride our bike trails and let’s work together to really do something that changes our city forever. We can do it. Thanks to each and everyone of you that pick up this magazine, log on to ModestoView.com,

This is the original “Parklet” we created that started the 10th St Place transformation hashtag your Instagrams #modestoview as we are creating a new buzz and our readers are clearly the best people in our region. Thanks for patronizing the businesses that advertise in ModestoView as they make it possible for us to spread the good word and fulfill our mission to “Serve Civic Pride Daily”. Who knows, maybe your kids or friends will move back home and make a career here like my kids have done. Wouldn’t that be a great holiday wish? Thank you all for being a part of this and contributing. We can way to see what we all can do together next year and I, on behalf of all of our ViewCrew wish you and yours the happiest of holidays and a Happy New Year. Best to you all, Chris Murphy Publisher and Founder, ModestoView 209-534-1704

ModestoView has won 3 fantastic national MarCom design awards! We are so very honored as we create ModestoView each month and every day online to celebrate Modesto and showcase the positive and good about our community. That being said, it is especially wonderful to win a design award for doing this. What does this say about Modesto? It means that there are so many good things happening in our community that we can make a magazine about it and the people, places and things in Modesto deserve awards. This is only possible with the amazing talents of Michael J Mangano, our amazing Photo Director and our Creative Director Pete Grimaldi, both of whom take our crazy ideas, cocktail napkins sketches and make it real, an real pretty. My deepest thanks go out to these guys for their amazing creativity, skill and teamwork. – Chris Murphy

This time of year is gorgeous! Fall as we go into winter is one if the best times to take a walk. The homes are decorated and it is fun to go explore neighborhoods you don’t normally visit. Ride your bike or walk through the big treelined streets in the College Area or around Graceada Park. Modesto has planted so many trees that are now mature and canopy the entire streets. As the leaves turn and fall, they open up the night skies. As we enjoy this holiday season, one of the most surefire ways to stay fit is to walk. Worried about those big holiday dinners or did you go crazy at Thanksgiving? Get out and take a walk. Not only will you stay fit and feel good through the holiday season, you might find a new neat neighborhood, meet new friends and have a whole new view of Modesto. Send us your fall pics to photo@modestoview.com or share them in Instagram #modestoview and we might use them in our magazine or online

Great Graffiti Gifts! Show your Modesto cruising pride and stop by our downtown ModestoView lounge and see the cool gifts from Modesto Graffiti USA. There are cups, t-shirts, Onesies for babies, shot glasses and so much more. Get in your holiday Graffiti groove, take a break in our diner lounge and catch up on the latest issue of ModestoView.

Artist Vern Fergel at Carolyn Huff Gallery

Winter Gifts

by Jim Christiansen The Winter Gift buying season is upon us. I hope you will consider getting “Original Art”. I have Art in the Mistlin Gallery CCAA members Home for the Holiday Show. This year, the show has a price range low to high, in various styles, all by local artists. The art is for sale, available to take home upon purchase. Check in at the docent desk for payment options and details. The docent desk is also where artists sign up for shows, classes, or get information. Have patience, the docents are volunteer members of the CCAA. More holiday art options across the downtown Art Walk landscape include: Chartreuse Muse, Peer Recovery Art Project, Modspot, Crow Trading, The Artists Loft at Slaters, Carolyn Huff Gallery, and more. A reminder, the Stanislaus Artists Open Studio Artist registration ends January 15. The steering committee took a trip to Turlock’s Second Thursday Art Around Town, stopping at Carnegie Arts Center to marvel at the Mucha exhibition and companion shows that run into mid-January. We also checked out the upstairs theater, lecture hall, now also used for their Music Series. Hot Club Faux Gitane will perform there December 8. We stopped at the Main Street Gallery and Building Imagination Center. Very Impressed with the printmaking demo by CSUS Student art club, and displays inside. Students have an additional art stop downtown, where they shared portfolios with us. We visited First Street Gallery and Frame Shop, and caught the current displays, and over 50 artists Miniature Show that runs to December 19. My first time to this Turlock Art Event.

Interaction with the Stan State Students was part of our Open Studio Tour objective, working out ways to get more artists, art programs and venues onto our Open Studio event map. www.stanislausaos.wordpress.com I was late to the November Downtown Art Walk, so here’s a note on what I missed. Trevino’s Barber Shop had lamps and sidewalk display, pretty well attended. Jennifer and I ran into MJC Art Club students at various stops. Preservation Coffee had colorful show I could see from across the street. PRAP and ModStop looked stocked for Mod Shop. We got to Still Smoking Late, but I saw the photos of Gerardo Alatorre at work on new body painting demo. I did get to meet Vern Fergel, and his colorful watercolors at Carolynn Huff Gallery at 13th and K. Vern is a retired architect and I believe featured all month. Art Walk Is December 17 this month. Art at work in the community: the Art Scholars, Youth at Risk program conducted at Mistlin Gallery. Artist referrals end this month, and the classes of this program helping 7th to 12th grade students, will start up its new session in January, with exhibition in April. The truth of the matter is that the sugar plum is not a plum at all, nor does it contain any plum-like substance. The sugar plums of Christmas fantasy are in fact sugar, and any resemblance to plums is entirely superficial! Well, it still had me at SUGAR! ‘Tis the season to taste all that is sweet and rich in dreamy flavors! Merry Christmas Modesto Viewers! Whether you have been naughty or nice I’m sure you can explain, right? Haha! I’m also thinking your sweet tooth will get the best of you this holiday season. Myth: The average person gains 5-10 lbs. during the holidays. According to most studies on the subject, the average person gains one to two pounds from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Therefore, given this glorious new information I‘m delighted to share with you where you can indulge on endless desserts on even given Sunday all year round! The Fruit Yard’s Sunday brunch boasts 2 sprawling tables covered from end to end of confections galore! Before arriving at the dessert tables, you will pass through a loaded salad bar, a biscuit station, several food warmers with a parade of choices from eggs benedict to sautee’d NY steak, French toast sticks to potatoes, bacon & sausage to chicken fried steak, all leading to the fresh seafood like crab & shrimp conveniently located next to the self-serve drawn butter! Yes, my daughter Amanda & I braved it past that to the omelet station where a chef was waiting with linguica, spinach, peppers, mushrooms, and more to create each of us an individual omelet to our liking! Right when our plates appeared to be full, I glanced down

10

at a carnivore’s dream, a prime rib! The chef with a willing carving knife in hand slicing me off a thick & juicy slice of meat! Mmmmm so Dana~licious! I know, I know, we should be full by now when in fact we happen upon the dessert tables! Give me an empty clean plate I’m going in! Apricot bars, baked apple bites, cinnamon rolls, pumpkin pie bars, peanut butter cookies, chocolate cream puffs, berry pastries, and then I spy this little square that is covered in nuts and caramel, so I tried it. I almost wept! It was decadent, something had my taste buds dancing like those sugar plums in my head! Out of the corner of my eye I could see a young boy with a skewer in hand, spearing marshmallows &

grapes that he placed into a fountain of melted chocolate! Beyond words at this point! I took my nut and caramel square & followed his lead! As close to a Wonka moment that I’ve ever had! My Amanda was looking at me as if I had totally forgot she was there, so I made it up to her with a cheese blintz covered in hot berries and powdered sugar! Modesto View Signature Question: Beatles or Stones? ME in the theme: “Brown Sugar” from the 1971 “Sticky Fingers” album of course! The Rolling Stones!!!

UNPLUGGED The NFL (Nifty Fiddling Lady) Sunday Ticket by Aaron Rowan The NFL (Nifty Fiddling Lady) Sunday Ticket This is the way the 2015 Modesto Unplugged concert series ends. Not with a clang, but with a timbre. On Sunday afternoon December 6, bluegrass fiddle superstar Megan Lynch Chowning is going to whip up a whirlwind of music for us, not unlike the twister that recently visited our county. Megan has been touring with country music stars Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan for a few years now, along with her songwriter friend Mary Sue Englund, who is joining her for this short California run. Their Modesto appearance will take place in the cellar at Greens On Tenth, 953 10th St., which has recently completed its remodel and expansion to become a multi-purpose event venue. We’ve enjoyed holding a string of beautiful concerts in their cellar for the past eight months, and Mary & Megan are the perfect finale for our run of presentations there. Doors will open at 2 PM and the concert kicks off at 3. General admission is $20. Megan scored her seventh National Fiddle Championship earlier this year, and has won the California Fiddle Championship six times. She and her fiddle students have also earned state championships in more states than I have even traveled to; and she has garnered an IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Award, among numerous other honors. She’s the Lance Armstrong of the fiddle, in other words. Perhaps I should not make that comparison - she might be accused of doping with the blood of Antonio Stradivari himself (his body is frozen right next to Walt Disney’s, you know, so it’s not impossible.) Megan is the founder of FiddleStar Camps in Nashville, and has taught the instrument at camps across the U.S., Canada and the U.K. Mary Sue Englund has appeared numerous times at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, and at venues around the world, backing up Pam Tillis on guitar, violin, piano and harmony vocals for the better part of a decade. Mary wrote and recorded her first solo album at 17, and has won the USA Songwriting Competition. This golden afternoon of bluegrass & country sounds will be far more entertaining than the

football game, I promise you. So remember: NFL stands for ‘nifty fiddling lady’ on this special Sunday. In a city where cover bands are king, the annual Elegy showcase stands out as a special tribute to those musical greats who have passed from this life during the past year. Overseen

by MAMA Award winner Patty Castillo Davis, Elegy returns for the third time, with local songwriters honoring B.B. King, Allen Toussaint, Lesley Gore, Percy Sledge, Three Dog Night and more with their own renditions of classic tunes. This year Elegy will double as a benefit for the great local theatre outfit, Center Stage Conservatory, and will be held in their basement-level studio on Friday night December 18. Admission will be $10 and will include light fare, wine and door prizes. Center Stage is nestled inside the City Center building, 948 11th St. Doors open at 6:30 and concert begins at 7. Modesto Unplugged has quite a lineup of diverse musical offerings slated for next year in our new venue home. Our monthly series ‘Live At The GMC’ will premiere in mid-January at the Gottschalk Music Center on the corner of Burney & E St., just off downtown. Many different genres, and sounds from around the world, will be featured. Be sure to check our website, modestounplugged.com, for information on the series. Happy New Year to all!

ARCHITECTURE

Bringing Tenth Street Back to Life by: Barrett Lipomi, AIA

December Movies

If you have been downtown over the past few months you likely have noticed city crews working on the block of Tenth Street between I and J Streets. However this isn’t your typical road project. This section of Tenth Street has been a significant part of Modesto’s history from the bustling storefronts a century ago, to teenagers cruising this block in the late 70’s. However in recent years vacant storefronts have replaced once thriving businesses and we are left with a block that has very little life. This is all starting to change however thanks to collaboration between the City of Modesto and the Downtown Modesto Partnership. The Urban Design Group, part of the Downtown Modesto Partnership, has been working together with the City of Modesto over the past

year to develop a plan to improve this block of Tenth Street. The goal of this project was not only to beautify the streetscape, but also to provide a safer and more enjoyable experience for pedestrians. This block is significant not only because of its history, but also because it provides the final link between the Modesto Center Plaza and the Gallo Arts Center. The plan developed by the Urban Design Group and City of Modesto has now been realized on this block and addresses both the inter-

sections on each end of the block as well as the mid-block area. At the corners of the block, the pedestrian zones were bulbed out into the street creating urban parklets in what was once unusable space. These parklets create fantastic gathering places that can be used by both the public and adjacent businesses. In addition to their function as a parklet, these “bulb-outs” also shorten the distance of the crosswalk making it easier and safer for pedestrians to cross the street. Trees in raised planter beds now line both sides of the street and they will mature to create a wonderful rhythmic canopy shading this block. Lighting will also be added to these trees to provide a pleasant place to walk during cold winter evenings. If you haven’t been down this block recently, I encourage you to take a walk and see the transformation. It is very promising to see the City investing in this block and in the future of downtown. My hope it that this project proves to be the catalyst needed to bring Tenth Street back to life.

INTER

by Chris Murphy

This has been a busy year and so much has happened in Modesto and our surrounding cities. Each month, we interview someone that is making a difference in our community in some really cool way. As we look back on 2015 and make our plans for next year, we wanted to check in and see how it all went. Here are what the people in our community thought went great this last year. We asked them all: What do you think was the best thing that happened in Modesto during 2015? For me the best thing in Modesto in 2015 was the ongoing success of the Gallo Center for the Arts. The entire community is buying into it as an important venue of culture and entertainment. It is an anchor for growth in our downtown, which needs to be the area that defines our unique community spirit. Gary C. Nelson, Attorney/Musician Best thing of 2015 ? I would take look at the Elephant in the room. Who’s wellbeing or interests are classed in the best category? That my friends depends ones class or social economic standing. Looking in particular to our downtown core district with all its nooks and crannies, the “ Finding our Way Home Summit”, a gathering of over 500 community members engaged in conversations about finding solutions that may impact Stanislaus County’s homeless and vagrancy epidemic was a highlight. John Black CEO, L.E., Peer Recovery Art Project Incorporated The camaraderie that is developing/emerging between community leaders, government, non-profit and faithbased organizations. The communication that has fostered many community based initiatives, including those led by Stan Risen CEO and Ruben Imperial to address homelessness and other community concerns. Lonnie Davis, Hope Haven West/Uncle Lonny Presents Modesto On Ice! To have ice skating in Modesto, on real ice, for the first time in 40 years, and to have it in Downtown Modesto attracting the entire cross-section of our community to the heart of our city... It’s hard to think of a more exciting happening in 2015 than this truly monumental event. Reggie Rucker, Engaged by Reggie Rucker

Aaron & Amy Vickery The improvements on 10th St and the passing of the Community Benefit District. I realize not everyone approves of the CBD but I believe it’s the only way we will be able to transform downtown into a place that is vibrant, safe, lively, clean and beautiful. We have so much potential! Lynn Dickerson , Gallo Center for the Arts My vote would be getting the Community Benefit District passed for Downtown Modesto. That may seem like a simple thing but it’s something that will make a huge difference in the future in my opinion. The Community Benefit District will secure the resources needed to help make Downtown safe, clean and enjoyable to our residents. David White, Stanislaus Alliance I had a hard time picking one thing so I made a list of a bunch of great stuff and found themes. For me, 2015 in Modesto was about collaboration and partnerships. From amazing cultural and musical events to tackling important social issues, I feel like our community is getting better and better at remembering we’re all in this together. That came alive for me more than ever in 2015. Kate Trompetter, Center for Human Services I’d say the Elvis tribute show in June was one night to remember. Triple D teamed up with the fabulous Sensations singing group and played to a packed house at the State theatre!

Modesto Boys & Girls Club So many talented friends came together that night to make it a success. Doug Robinett, Musician / Tile Contractor The planetarium at Modesto Junior College along with the new location of the Great Valley Museum. I love the planetarium shows with one of the newest and most state of the art projectors in the United States. On science night they are able to show the sky in real time. All the shows I’ve been to have started with a laser show with Beatles music who can beat that? Kelly Gregerson, Modesto Commerce Bank The music scene in Modesto is the most important thing to me and the youth of Modesto are the future of that scene. At the beginning of 2015 Benz engineering made the rock ‘n’ roll warehouse available to the Valley Music Institute/VMIRocks youth rock music program. This helped these young musicians be able to rehearse and perform in two highly professional rehearsal facilities. Hundreds of young musicians were able to experience the excitement, Camaraderie, confidence and skill building of a music program in a state of the art performance environment. An important milestone in preaching the gospel of rock ‘n’ roll! Darin Morris, Musician, VMI Rocks One of the best things that happened in Modesto during 2015 was music. Don’t get me wrong, this happens all the time but this year

was exceptional. The variety, the venues, not to mention the caliber of artists should be recognized and celebrated. Whether it was Gallo Center for the Arts, Fat Cat, X Fest, Barkin’ Dog Grill or 10th Street Plaza, Modesto attracted nationally known musicians, in addition to showcasing local artists. It was an impressive year for music in Modesto and I am eager to hear what is on tap for 2016!! Dana Ferreura , Congressman Jeff Denham’s Office The 2015 event is the opening in of the Stanislaus County Boys and Girls Club on Modesto’s West Side, at the King Kennedy Center. There are more children on waiting lists for after school programs on the West Side than such programs have space. We desperately need to engage more youth on the West Side. The West Modesto Club opened this summer with a soft opening that expected 30 to 50 children. Over 175 have signed up and that number is growing. The West Modesto Club is in the process of securing a 3500 sq. ft. modular building to accommodate the demand. They have already produced positive results – improved behavior in many of the children and a safer Mellis Park. Dave Gianelli, Attorney, Community Volunteer To me, the Focus on Prevention Summit was the best thing that came out of 2015. Modesto’s growing concern over the plight of homelessness brought 500 people together for an entire day to focus on what can be done immediately and how we can prevent homelessness in the future. The County and City are working on a ten year plan to meet local needs Many cities in California and all over the globe are looking at creative solutions to address the issue. What made the Focus on Prevention Summit stand out was the fact that the conversation wasn’t the typical “what they are doing” or “what government and nonprofits should do” but “what WE can do together” across sectors and belief systems. This will take a huge amount of energy and a lot of time but I have hope that we can change our situation. Amy Vickery, City of Modesto This is just a few of the responses we were able to include in the Magazine. More answers are featured on www.modestview.com and we will continue to collect answers all month. If you want to send in yours, please email to info@modetoview.com We want everyone to be a part of this.

ALL AGES Happy holidays, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Let’s keep the spirit thriving for another month. In this article, I will be giving you 5 things to do to make your December better. I hope you can incorporate some of these ideas into your month. First you can donate! Out in the Vintage Faire mall the Soroptimist tree is stationed. This gives you the opportunity to make someone’s Christmas what it never has been by giving them toys and supplies that they need. It always brings my family closer and helps us become more thankful! There are also a lot of groups collecting cans of food, so be sure and contribute to feed the less fortunate. Second, you can spend time in the community. A great way to boost the holiday spirit would be going to the Hospice Lighting of the Christmas Tree on December 6th at Coffee & Briggsmore at 5pm. Another classic Modesto way of celebrating is going to the Christmas Parade on December 5th, downtown at 5:30pm and the tree lighting at Rockin’ Holiday in 10th St Plaza at 7:30. The friends of hospice will be turning the Gallo Center into a winter wonderland on December 4th and 5th. On Friday from

by Leia Johnson 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM there will be a designer Christmas trees auction, holiday luncheon and boutique. On Saturday from 8:00 to 11:00 AM there will be treats, gifts to purchase, and a special visit from Santa himself! To purchase tickets, go to http://www. hospiceheart.org or call (209) 578-6370. Third: Celebrate the arts! Go see The Nutcracker, a Christmas Carol, or Modesto Symphony choral program. All of these can be found on www. galloarts.com Fourth, spend time with family and friends! From November 21 to January 24, Downtown Motown will have an ice skating rink! Also downtown there are some groovy art studios that offer classes. This would be a great idea for a homemade gift! To register for the Mistlin Gallery, or look up dates, go to mistlingallery.eventbrite.com and to sign up for the Chartreuse Muse workshops, call (209) 522-0935 The Muse holiday workshops are geared towards children, and the Mistlin are families/children and some for adults. Finally, I encourage to buy your holidays gifts in local stores. We have so many cool stores downtown and McHenry Village so make a day of it! What better way to spend your holiday, than the best place in the world?

time of year, but many need it all year long. The best way you can help the homeless or those in need is to give to our local organizations that get food and shelter directly to those that need it. We have compiled a basic list of groups that we know for sure are getting your valuable and important support directly to those that need it with the lowest possible overhead. ModestoView is always looking for the smartest way to lend a hand.

Soroptimist Giving Tree Upper level – Vintage Faire Mall

Help a child have a happy holiday by choosing his/her name off of the Soroptimist Community Christmas Tree. Take a name tag, shop for a gift at Vintage Faire stores, (many have discounts if you show them the tree tag) and return the items to the Soroptimist booth. Volunteers will wrap the gift and deliver it to the child before Christmas Day. The Soroptimist booth and tree will be located on the upper level outside of Forever 21 and opens at 10 am most days through December 1.

Toy and Coat Drives Salvation Army Needs You

The Salvation Army needs new, unwrapped toys very much this season. Bring your donations to 625 I Street (corner of 7th and I). The Salvation Army also needs basic essentials like toiletries, socks, sanitary products and more for the winter homeless shelter at the Berberian Shelter at 9th and D. There is a Christmas dinner for all who come, Thursday, December 24, 11:00 a.m. at The Salvation Army Modesto Citadel, 625 I Street.

Rockin Holiday Coat, Shoe and Toy Drive

All of the Rockin Holiday groups have linked up to make sure that the Foster Children of Stanislaus Country are receiving much needed items. Foster kids are some of the forgotten in our area and there will be pick up points at all of the Rockin Holiday events in downtown Modesto as well as drop boxes at the following locations. Modesto DID (11th) Trevino’s Barber Shop (10th) Twisted Pig (on Coffee & Floyd) Daydreams & Nightmares (7th) Keller & Keller Assoc. (Sylvan) US Bank McHenry) City of Modesto (10th Street Plaza) Tangled T’s (on Downey) Talk of the Town Barber (H St)

Toys for Tots

You can really make a difference and put toys on hands of kids in need. Our friends at KAT Country 103 are really helping a lot with this organization. http:// turlock-ca.toysfortots.org/local-coordinator-sites/lco-sites/default.aspx

Fill the Boat

Join the Hawk December 12th at the Modesto Walmart on Plaza Parkway for the “Fill The Boat” Annual Toy Drive! Help Walmart & the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary with new unwrapped toys for the children staying at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Central Valley! If you have a Toy, Coat or Food drive, please let us know and we will spread the word. Events@modestoview.com

MAMA

The Holiday Season By Middagh Goodwin

The year is almost over, we are officially entering the Holiday Season and it is finally getting a little chilly around the 209. Regardless of how you celebrate this time of year, gifts are going to be given and why not make those purchases right here at home. Over the last year several bands have released new material and all would make for a fantastic gift. If you need something heavy and loud check out the new albums by Zombie Death Stench, 17Ten, Sworn to the Black or Forever Obscured all have new material for Metal fans. Do you or yours like indie rock pick up new releases by Medusas, Pacific Lung and Boy on Guitar. They all have music available on vinyl and are well worth the price. KCSS released Take 1 a compilation of bands from all over the area in a 2 CD set. This is a great way to find out about new bands and support your local college radio station all in one fell swoop. Terrible Timing are a great SKA Punk band and has a new E.P. out and it

is fantastic. Way Grimace and Ronald Records are both local labels and have so much available that you need to check out their respective websites and start picking things up now. Most every band worth their weight in fans have T Shirts. Stickers or other merchandise that would also make for fun gifts and stocking stuffers. What about a picking up a gift certificate for a favorite venue or local restaurant? Barkin’ Dog, Deva Café, Queen Bean, Rebels, Minnies and just about all the other great local places that showcase live music. You can spend as little as $5 and are supporting local business at the same time. Tickets to a show large or small also make for thoughtful gifts, regardless if it is a show at the Gallo Center(Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame tickets are still available for their CD Release show) the State Theater or for any of the great live theater and music events at the Prospect Theater.

and art in the 209. I started booking shows in 1986 while attending college and was a part of ASMJC. Over the years I have booked shows from Merced to Lodi, was a founding member of the Modesto Organization of Bands, on the board and booked events for the Central Valley Music Festival and ran the Plea for Peace Center in Stockton. Look forward to the Brew Ha Ha continuing at Deva Café, shows planned at the Prospect Theater in Modesto and Rebels in Stockton. Plans are also to have live music and comedy booked in local venues as part Modesto Con July 9th and 10th and a few bigger events are in the planning stages to celebrate such a milestone few ever see. Hope everyone has a Rockin’ Holiday and a Happy New Year and remember friends don’t let friends miss out on great local events.

Do you have young musicians in your home? Did you know there are a few really great “Schools of Rock” in our area? What a better gift to give than the gift of music lessons. GK Music in Manteca and the Valley Music Institute in Modesto are both fantastic schools, that also group kids together in bands that eventually perform live all over the area. It

is really amazing how talented these kids are and is testament of the instructors and schools themselves. You just can’t go wrong, not only are you giving a great present, but you are supporting someone’s dream. Speaking of dreams, in 2016 Beat Happy! Music will be celebrating 30 Years of music

“Christmas Star”

POETRY

by Ken White

They sat on the curb across the street like three jaybirds, the thick Tule fog swirling around them. Not talking, not pointing, just staring. Transfixed by my Christmas tree, all lit up in the living room window, with the bright star on top. They were homeless. They had nowhere to go. But, for a moment, the tree took them back to a time and place when they were somebody else and Christmas was a celebration, not a day on the calendar when the shelter served turkey with all the trimmings. I felt sorry for them and realized how lucky I was. To have had a wonderful childhood, a caring family, a loving wife, great friends, and a supportive community so that Christmas truly was the most wonderful time of the year. I thought about offering them something – food, drink, a gift, but realized that might embarrass or offend them. Instead, I opened the curtains wider.

Dear Syrian Refugees, You are welcome in my home.

by Sam Pierstorff

Not everyone welcomes you, not in their country, not in their city, not on the streets where they walk their dogs, stopping only to let them urinate on trees. These are sacred lands, they say, and your hands are dirty. But my porch light is always on. My door is always open. I have a futon in the front room and a bookcase full of poetry from Levine to Rumi if you get bored. And there are picture books too, leftover from my children who have graduated to bigger words like scared, like starving, like survival. My 7-year-old son has a bunk bed. He says you can have the bottom because he likes the top. It makes him

feel like an airplane pilot every night when he climbs into the cockpit of his bed where his dreams take flight. He’s even set aside stuffed animals for your sons and daughters who might want to cuddle something more than fear and the heartbreaking chill of despair. Our house is warm. I know the oceans you’ve crossed have been cold. Rain and winter have beaten your bodies down, but still you have the strength to keep your spirits up and moving. When you get to my house, there will be rest. There will be hot tea and dinner. There will be laughter. There will be safety. You will be home. At least, I hope it will feel that way if only for a moment.

Skip’s Music of Modesto closed their doors this month after being in business here for decades. Why you might ask? Well it may be the economy, buying online, less people playing music or buying at other locations in the area, whatever the reason it is loss for the community and a personal loss for me, The guys, you know the fellas; Gill, Travis, Mario, Tom and many others that not only sold you the merch but told you how to use it and helped you when you had a problem. Skip’s sponsored many showed many of us did over the years and loaned gear when I had an 11 hour problem with a show, fixed my piano with broken keys at a jam session numerous times and helped when I needed advise in what to buy. Please support your locally owned music stores so they can thrive and keep it happenin’ here locally. Think global, please shop

ZEN

by Mary Layton

The holiday season is here again and everyone is extra busy with shopping, cooking, cleaning and projects around the house. Finally we can set aside time for close, as well as distant, family members, friends and collegues and have a good time. Whether you are surrounded by many or only a few people, by your pets or are alone during the holidays, the whole experience can still be overwhelming and personally challenging. Whatever the case may be, it’s all about how you set your mind. It’s always better to remember the things that we can be grateful for. As we look back on 2015, everyone has probably gone through some negative and some positive things. Keep the focus on the good stuff. Surprise yourself this holiday season and do something you normally would not do. Personally, I enjoy walking in one of the many beautiful parks in our area. The brilliant fall colors of our Modesto city trees are amazing! Seeing trees and the sky uplifts the spirit. Moving through the crisp air is stimulating and totally invigorating. Out of nowhere a good thought may come to en-

lighten you and cheer you up. It’s gotten pretty cold lately, but nothing compared to other parts of the country. Finally we got some rain. Thank God! In between storms we get beautiful sunny weather. We are lucky indeed. Still in a funk? How can you turn it around? Put candles around the house for a warm atmosphere. Just don’t forget to blow them out. Listen to music; it soothes the soul. People need love and warmth and that is what Christmas and the holiday season is about. Getting gifts for people or receiving them is only one way of experiencing love. There are many other ways to feel and express our innate and most essential asset : Love. Love is giving of yourself. Coming out of your reserve. Aside from celebrating the birth of Christ, why not celebrate your own life as well? Loving and caring for yourself and focusing on the positive will connect you to feelings of love. A Chinese proverb says: “We earn a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give.” Merry Christmas, everyone! Make it the best ever; make it special. BLUES by Earl Matthews

Hello Friends, I hope you are all doing well and excited for all this wet weather we have waited so long for. I know folks in other parts of the world struggle with seasonal affective disorder, but we here in Modesto take our rain with a nice bit of sunshine so I hope you are feeling good and ready to get out and enjoy some of the fun shows and events going on the December around the valley. I am happy tell those of you who don’t already know about a friend of mine who has just released a new cd. It’s his first solo CD and it’s titled “Let Yourself Go”. The artist I am talking about is a fella by the name of John Clifton, you may already know John as the frontman for the Mofo Party Band from Fresno. John has been tearing up stages in the valley and around the world for many years now and is just back from his most recent tour of Europe.

22

D E C E M B E R

John Clifton is a man of many talents: he is a writer, producer, harmonica player, singer, guitar player and dynamic frontman. If you want to meet a guy “in the know” about music you need look no further; he can can tell you who wrote what when and on what label, whether it be Country, Blues, Rock or Rockabilly, John knows his stuff. So when I tell you that he is someone I look up to, you know it’s not put on. I have had the chance to open for, play with, and see John with the band he formed with his brother Bill many times and it’s always a treat.

On Dec 18th John Clifton Blues Band will be performing at ModSpot on 13th and J St in Downtown Modesto. This is the first show at this new venue and what a show it will be. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. On December 4th in Turlock at the Vintage Lounge, B-4 Dawn Band with Terrie Londee will be performing R&B, Classic Rock and Blues for your dancing pleasure. Terrie and her band are a hard working band who play all over Cen Cal and are not to be missed. Also on December 4th, Roy Rogers and the Delta Rhythm Kings will be playing at Black Oak Casino. Roy has been a staple at the biggest and best blues festivals in the world since I was a little boy. He has recorded with music legends such as John Lee Hooker and Allen Toussaint. Mr. Rogers is considered to be on of the greatest living slide guitar players in the world. I have had the pleasure of seeing him myself on a couple of occasions and I would recommend you do the same. On December 18th there is a benefit concert at (and for) the Lower Level Theater in Down-

town Modesto. Featured artist are Josh Davenport, Anthony Edwards, Patty Hughes and Patty Davis. There will be light food, wine and door prizes, too. $10 from 7 to 9. On December 19th you can catch Tony and the Tuff TImes over at the Barkin’ Dog Grill. On NYE, if you are looking to get your blues fix, look no further Stockton’s own Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood will be out at Moores RIverboat in the Stockton Delta. Jeramy and the guys put on a great show and always pull a friendly crowd. It’s a guaranteed win for your new year celebration. To wrap things up, let talk about Jams. Jams the best place to go if you want to meet other musicians to start a new project of just hear some great spur of the moment music, live and alive. There are 2 now in this area that I know about. One is in Stockton on Wednesday nights at Garlic Brothers hosted by Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood. The other is brand new and it’s at the Tilted Turtle in Modesto, also on Wednesday nights. Well folks, that’s all for me in 2015. I hope you have a great December and I hope to see you out at a show.

FIT Staying Alive by Efren Martinez Well you can tell by the way he uses his walk he’s a racing man with no time to talk. When Bob Tennent takes his place at a race you can bet that he’ll be “Staying Alive” speed walking with no “Jive Talk’n.” Eat your heart out John Travolta AKA (Tony Manero), with this 69 year old unlike any other racer, he’s a speed walker. Although some may think that pushing 70 might be a bit too old for racing, in Bob’s mind age is just a number and his racing finish times more than prove it. In fact you might have been past by Bob at any one of his local races. He’s the guy who speed walks to the finish line with his arms swinging in motion as if they were propelling him through the air. Although Bob may not consider himself a speed walker, more so “just a guy who walks faster, and farther than the average person.” It was back in on April 2, 2013 when a friend of his challenged Bob to walk the Modesto Peace Officer’s Memorial Half Marathon that was to

happen in September 2013. This was Bob’s first timed race and his goal was to finish in under 3 hours. He ended up crushing his goal with a time of 2:38:08. His amazing pace was 12:04 per mile. That’s smoking fast even for a run, but Bob wasn’t running or even jogging, he was walking. On November 1st, 2015 he participated in the Fresno Half Marathon Walk. He ended up doing extremely well with a finish time of 2:37:56, placed 2nd in 60-69 age group, 2nd in Master 50+ group, 3rd in Men’s Division and 3rd Overall/out of 130 walkers. With such great times under his feet I asked Bob how often does he walk per week and what’s the distance? He replied, “When I first started walking in April of 2013 the first week I started with 3 miles and did just 10 miles for the week. By the end of April I had walked 49 miles. Prior to the Peace Officer’s Walk in September I had walked 345 miles. In the first

three months of 2014 I walked 639 miles and in 2014 I walked a total of 3004 miles. Now I usually walk 7 days a week, but normally don’t walk much the day before a race. The distance can vary from 3-5 miles a day to 12-15 miles when I have the time. In the past three months August-October I’ve walked 700 miles.” What an inspiration to us all! As we get older it’s even more important to stay active for one’s mind, body and soul. With that being said, I asked Bob if his overall health has been changed in anyway from his choice of fitness/walking. He said, “In January 2012 I weighed over 250 pounds and had a waist of

44”. I hadn’t exercised in 20 years. In May 2012 I weighted 232 with BMI 33.2, Body Fat at 36.9% and Muscle Mass of 26.8%. I was 4” short of being able to touch my toes. I started working out at the gym, three days a week, and over time increased to working out 5 days a week and added walking. I actually got my weight down to 160 after walking a half marathon, but my body told me that was too low. In November 2013 I weighed 168, which is less than I weighed in High School and I had lost 12” off my waist. My BMI was 24.1, Body Fat was 15.4%, Muscle Mass 37.7% and I could wrap my fingers over the ends of my toes a 7.5” improvement.” WOW!

King, Percy Sledge, Ben E. King, Allen Toussaint and Rock and Roll pioneers, Lesley Gore, Three Dog Night and many more. This year’s Elegy concert is a fundraiser, all proceeds benefiting The Center Stage Conservatory’s Lower Level Theater. Light fare with wine and door prizes are included in the all-ages ticket price of $10.
