Don’t you love it when it gets cold and grey, maybe sunny and cold or just plain chilly. There is something magical about the Thanksgiving weekend, where something is in the air makes it seem to start feeling like the holidays. Maybe it is the family, or the friendships, or seeing everyone at ModShop and tasting your first Irish Coffee in a downtown café, or the giving spirit but there truly something special that happens as we start December that wraps us up in a warm blanket as the leaves fall. Usually, we take a look back in December, but this month we stay focused on what’s happening now. Man it is exciting. So many changes a foot. As you know, I like downtown a lot. ModestoView has been a champion for downtown for nearly 20 years. Why? Because a truly good city has an awesome downtown and we

won’t rest until we get there. There are things happening. Rockin’ Holiday is here. We have a Downtown Modesto Partnership that was created solely to make downtown better. We have a new Visit Modesto effort that needs guidance and focus from those of us that can lead the way to what makes Modesto tick and showcase what Modesto really can be. There are new efforts to light up the streets and sidewalks, there are more classic art murals, and the downtown restaurants have been busting it hard to create an experience for both new residents and our regulars. The 3rd Annual ModShop was bigger than ever and our streets and stores were bustling with action, music, sights and sounds. What do we want for the holiday season? Let’s keep it going, let’s spread the word, let’s all go to the shows, and try a new place to eat and take part in Rockin’ Holiday and go ice skating at Modesto on Ice and stay around afterwards for an Apres Skate experience, and yeah we hit a high note this month when Brian Setzer brings his Rockin’ Christmas Orchestra to Modesto USA, the birthplace of Rockabilly. Oh yeah, we have a Star Wars Premier on December 15, and yes, we are the #homeofstarwars and #homeofgeorgelucas. So in summary, the gift we all need to give ourselves is the “Gift of Civic Pride”. It is free, and is available everywhere,

give it to yourselves and everybody else you know. You don’t even need gift wrap. The Murphy family is finally getting close to actually occupying most of our new house this month and that will make our holiday season a little more functional and fun. For many, this is not the case and the holidays are a tough time. My new route to work takes me by the Interfaith Ministry buildings and the Modesto Gospel Mission and it is a stark reminder that there is a little something that everyone can do. Our short time of transition is nothing compared to those who are truly in need. In this issue Maryann Spikes highlights the ways we can lend a hand. Whether it is socks for Rotary, or coats for IMF, or donating for the Christmas meals at Salvation Army, we can all do something. And there are good ways we can all make a difference. This is all part of the gift of civic pride, everyone needs some pride in their lives. This is how it all works Modesto. We celebrate the things that we are doing or have done that make our community better and we work hard to do the things that we can do to make our community better for the future. We are truly living local. ModestoView friends, you are the best, as just as you are holding this magazine in your hands, you have already chosen to make this a better place. Just like it is Graffiti Summer in Modesto all year long, it is May the 4th in Modesto all year long too. The Force will be especially strong December 15-17 in 10th St Plaza when the new Star Wars Rogue One premiers. It will be a great night in 10th St as Rockin’ Holiday will be in full force with live music and snow, and 501st Storm Troopers will be there as well as our other squadrons of Star Wars characters. You won’t want to miss this evening be first to see the movie. ModestoView will be doing a ticket contest the week before the event, so be watching our Facebook page Facebook. com/modestoview to get a chance to win. got a chance to walk the Art Walk map up K Street, with great plein air paintings featured at Carolyn Huff Gallery. This month she features Vern Fergel. Went up to see Phil Murillo’s art at Never Boring Design on 14th paired with Carrie Arnold inside. David Boring on guitar with drummer Dave Rogers on sidewalk. I worked my way down to the ever expanding artist line up at Still Smoking, and watched the laser cut art by Linda Knoll and her dad at Tinkertank. At Tresetti’s I met the artist, and art of Traci Bradford-Simonson. Beautiful Watercolors, reasonably priced. Mistlin Gallery features the members Home for the Holidays Show, and I have my own affordable art there in a bin of unframed original watercolors and printmaking back in the gift shop area, from $40 to $80. In the show are four of my framed Coffee Cats at $125. Mistlin features art jewelry and other items besides paintings, so check that off as one stop. Gallery commissions contribute to keeping the nonprofit open. Chartreuse Muse continues showing the work of Don Hall and Suzanne Staud, and other artists, and a place I go Christmas shopping for jewelry items, ceramics, and assorted items. For older stuff, check out Crow Trading. Other stops downtown open beyond Art Walk are Nicole Slater’s Artist Loft, Beads of Contentment, Intrinsic Elements and Carolyn Huff Gallery. Art on the walls at several of our

local restaurants including Deva, Preservation Coffee, Tokyo Express, Papachino’s and Barkin Dog feature art on the walls, available to purchase. Peer Recovery Art Project Gallery and Mod Stop also worth a look. December 15 is also the early deadline to enter the 2017 Stanislaus Artist Open Studio Tour, and submit art work for the Purchase Prize competition, where top juried works will be purchased for give away to patrons by raffle during the April 22 and 23 event. Final Deadline to enter is January 15. Entry forms available at many of the local galleries and art stops in Stanislaus County, including Mistlin Gallery, Chartreuse Muse, Carnegie Arts Center. Brown Ale

Brown ales tend to be lightly hopped, and often have a mildly flavored nutty taste. English brown ales first appeared in the early1900s, and the style became popular with North Americans in the early 1980s. Try the Deschutes Jubel Ale or the Ninkasi Sleighr, both seasonal winter ales, if you couldn’t tell by the names! (And not a typo-they really are spelled like that.)

Scotch Ale

While the full range of ales are produced in Scotland, the term “Scotch Ale” is used internationally to denote a malty, strong ale, amber-todark red in color because this particular ale is usually barrel aged in Scotch Whiskey barrels. The malt may be slightly caramelized to impart toffee notes; generally, Scottish beers tend to be rather sweeter, darker and less hoppy than English ones. You can’t go wrong with a creamy, dreamy Devil’s Canyon Full Boar Scotch Ale, which they often serve on nitro. Honorable mentions, (also pictured too!) are The Bruery’s 9 Ladies Dancing, as well as the delicious Madonna and Child sour by The Lost Abbey, which is a lime and salt flavored ale, aged in tequila barrels. If you love sours, you’ll like this take, and if you’re new to sours, try it, because it’s a great lead-in. See you next time! Sip on, friends!

COUNTRY Shane Minor By D.J. Walker – Kat Country 103 Country music performers usually spend the

early part of their career playing bars and various other gigs hopefully making it to the next level of becoming a national recording artist in Nashville. But those Big Stars wouldn’t be where they were if it wasn’t for one thing. The song. It’s the song that makes or breaks the artist. And the craft of creating the right combination of lyric to melody is an art unto itself. One of those craftsmen is Shane Minor. Shane grew up in Modesto. He went to Rose Avenue Elementary and graduated Modesto High School. While he was listening to his favorite California Country Singers, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and Dwight Yoakam, he was also writing his own lyrics and creating his own stories. Eventually it was legendary producer Dan Huff who heard his talent and Shane was signed to Mercury Records Nashville. “At the time, it wasn’t easy to convince Nashville that someone from California could sing country music.” Says Shane. “ ‘ What does a California boy know about country music? ’, they’d say. I’d tell them there is more agriculture and cowboys where I’m from than Palm trees and beaches!” But, eventually all things come

to an end, and becoming a country artist wasn’t meant to be for Shane. It was always songwriting that was closest to his heart and what Minor happily returned to. “Beautiful Mess” by Diamond Rio was the big breakout song for Shane as a writer. “Originally Faith Hill was going to cut the song, “, recalls

Shane, “but she passed on it and Diamond Rio recorded it.” Good thing, because It quickly became Minor’s first #1. Since then, he’s penned several #1 songs for singers that include, Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney, Cole Swindell, Steve Holy and Chris Young just to name a few. And the hits keep coming! He has several cuts on recent albums from Jason Aldean, Justin Moore and Drake White.

I can only imagine that when Shane co-wrote Craig Morgan’s #1 song “International Harvester” he was thinking about the country back roads of Modesto. “I’m a God fearing hardworking combine driver, Hogging up the road on my plower, Chug-a-lug-a-lugin 5 miles an hour, On my International Harvester.” Yup. We’ve all be behind that tractor on that ‘State Paved Road.’ “I can keep writing until I’m 75 if I want to!” Says Shane. “Every now and then I see Whispering Bill Anderson in the office. I said, ‘ What you doing Bill?’ , ‘Still at it baby! ’, he said! That’s the beautiful thing about songwriting.” It’s all about the song. Singers can deliver a great performance, but it’s the lyrics and the melody that have to resonate with us for us to fall in love with the song and want to sing it over and over again. Shane has a knack for finding the right combination of words and music to keep the hits flowing. So the next time you’re driving in Modesto past the acres of nut trees and breaking for the slowing moving tractors, listening to your favorite country song - chances are it was influenced and crafted by the memories of those same orchards and dairies that raised that Northern California country boy turned Nashville songwriter.

METAL by Eve Oberlander The Modesto Metal scene has seen its ups and downs this year. With mostly ups we have experienced some downs; with the passing of 17TEN’s Joe Young, we all lost a part of our lives. We have respect and love for you and your families, Joe. We will see you on the other side. 17TEN continues to strive with their band, playing shows, opening for nationals and writing new music. They have opened for The Mentors this year along with Doyle from the Misfits, John 5, Joe Buck, and M.O.D. These guys always get the party poppin’. We lost Fat Cat this year. A fun amazing venue that brought metal bands for years….and The Workshop in Ceres. At the same time this makes our Modesto Metal scene branch out and play and visit outside cities and venues. We need more places to play Metal and have Metal acts come to Modesto from all over the states and world. We will keep Metal alive in this town. We are very fortunate to have what is OUR local metal scene. There are many talented metal musicians in this city and awesome supporters; friends, fans and family.

Band members from around the state, keep telling me, “We like playing in Modesto because our towns and cities don’t even have a metal scene…. then we get here and everyone’s so kick ass, and supportive and having fun”. No joke, I’ve literally heard this from many musicians and supporters alike. Nothing But Losers has had a stellar year living up to their 2015 Best Metal MAMA Award. They have opened for 12 national acts this year, including Death Angel, Otep, Dope, Sid Wilson from Slipknot and American Headcharge just to name a few. But most importantly is their upcoming show opening for Mushroomhead

on Wednesday December 7th at The Boardwalk in Orangevale. These guys always get the crowd head banging. Sworn To The Black took home this years Best Metal MAMA award. I’ve been playing their album Delusions of Existence all year long. UNPLUGGED I saw that Charlie Daniels and his band are coming to the area this month. They’ll be at the Merced Theater on Thursday the 8th, which happens to be the night before the final Music At The GMC concert I’m presenting this year. That got me thinking about Charlie’s most iconic song. You know the one. I’m convinced there’s another verse or two to be written talking about our featured GMC artist, Megan Lynch Chowning. She’s a 7-time National Fiddle Champion, a 6-time California state champion, a state champion in 4 other states, and an International Bluegrass Music Association award winner. A talent like this deserves to be immortalized in song, so here’s my attempt: “The devil done learned his lesson. He fled north to Tennessee. Along the road he heard a sweet sound flowing from beneath a willow tree. The Fiddle Star was caressing her strings in the glow of the morning sun. Mary is a staple at the Grand Ole Opry, and has toured the world with country legend Pam Tillis as her pianist, guitarist, violinist and harmony vocalist for the past decade. We have a special event happening this month where our history meets the most popular Rockabilly musicians. On December 22 Rockabilly and Rockin’ Christmas blasts onto the Gallo Stage with Brian Setzer and his Orchestra. This is extra special as the man that re-lit the flame of Rockabilly with his band the Stray Cats in the 80s for the whole world began to Rock this Town and do the Stray Cat Strut. Modesto friends, the flame that the Stray Cats re-ignited was actually lit in 1938 here in Modesto USA when Fred, Cal and Rose Maddox took their “Hillbilly-Boogie” to the airwaves of KTRB 860. After World War II, their music with the “slappin’ bass” sound of Fred Maddox, spread across the USA, discovered by Elvis, Bill Haily and more. This foundation put the beat in Rock and Roll and history was changed. It is so very cool that Modesto will be home to Rockabilly royalty with this amazing Christmas show. You will hear some vintage Stray Cats faves along with rockin’ Christmas favorites. INTER Stanislaus State Connects Students with the World By Chris Murphy

President, California State University Stanislaus There is change afoot at “Stanislaus State”.

There is a new student centric focus at our local four-year university and the university is showing signs of blooming into a major educational force for people that are looking to get a great college experience that is a bang for your buck. This year they welcomed a new President. As a Stan State alumni, I find this to be exciting news. Dr. Ellen Junn has a Ph.d from Princeton and she graduated cum laude from University of Michigan, so we have a intellectual rocketship on our hands here. Formerly in leadership positions at Dominguez Hills, San Jose, Fullerton, Fresno, and San Bernardino, Ellen Jung is bringing a lot of what she learned to take Stanislaus to the next level. As a Stanislaus Alumni, I know the value of an education at our local college, and if you look around any local meeting, it is loaded with local leaders that are Stanislaus Alumni. So how can we take this amazing local asset, and turn it into a magnet for new students, new jobs and an amazing new cultural asset? Let’s get to know Ellen: ModestoView: What made you want to take on the Stanislaus job? Ellen Junn: I happily have been in the CSU for more than 30 years, and I have always thought the Stanislaus State campus is one of the most beautiful I have ever visited. Furthermore, after serving as Associate Provost at Fresno State, my husband and I were excited about the prospect of coming back to the Central Valley, especially in light of the number of national rankings recently awarded to Stan State, and given the strong success of our vibrant students and the outstanding programs and faculty we have on campus. MV: What do you think the community can do to even more embrace Stan State as our local four-year college? EJ: First, it may help your readers to know that Stan State is not just a local four-year college, but we also offer excellent graduate degrees, including nearly two dozen master’s degrees and a doctoral degree in education. Second, our degree programs have earned national recognition for excellence. Third, I believe that Stanislaus State is on the cusp of no longer being a “hidden gem” within the CSU system. Recently, Stanislaus State has received a number of prestigious national rankings, and we need to spread the word about our excellent students, academic programs and services. Consequently, I and others on campus have been hard at work

to meet with as many governmental, community, business and industry leaders; artistic and civic groups; and K-12 and community college partners in our region to spread the word about the quality of our students, programs and services. MV: Your first priority when you got to Stanislaus was to connect with students. How did that feedback change the way you thought about how you were going to approach being president? EJ: At the core of any institution of higher education is the central purpose of educating and preparing future generations of students for life after college. Success means providing students with vital knowledge and skills that will prepare and enhance their future professional careers or graduate studies, and ensuring that their time on campus will continue to enrich life-long learning and happy, healthy futures. As president, I want to be connected with all of the various student leadership groups and to offer ample opportunities to meet with and mingle with students. For example, this fall the campus hosted a newly invigorated Freshman Convocation, which brought together the largest entering freshmen class of more than 1,300 students in the history of the campus! Similarly, as the new president, I welcomed new freshmen and their parents and families on move-in day in the residential halls. I also host biweekly lunches with students at our dining facility, and I co-host “Pizza with the Presidents” along with the president of our Associated Students Inc. (ASI). MV: Many people think that college is out of reach. For new applicants if you meet the GPA and the requirements are you guaranteed admission? EJ: Currently, Stanislaus State remains a campus that maintains CSU eligible students as freshman. So as freshman, if students meet the regular CSU standards, they are eligible for admission, provided they also meet the campus’ normal deadlines and submission of documents. Transfer students also must be aware

of transfer agreements and articulation in order to ensure timely admissions eligibility. The great news is that families should know that Stanislaus State’s tuition and fees are very affordable, and depending on the student’s family income, many families will qualify for full state and federal financial aid that will significantly offset or cover the costs of tuition, fees, room and board. Stan State’s Financial Aid Office hosts various workshops and would be happy to provide information on costs to prospective students and their families. MV: We have been ranked as one of the highest value universities in the United States by variety of publications, what does that mean to you and your increase in applications or perception in the community? EJ: It has been exciting and gratifying to see that a number of prominent organizations and publications have ranked Stanislaus State among the top performing universities in the nation on a number of measures. What this means is that increasingly larger numbers of students are applying to our campus each year and this has been raising the visibility and prestige of Stanislaus State, both within California and beyond. As this recognition spreads, we continue to attract the keen interests of business, education, civic and governmental entities, which benefits employment opportunities for our graduates and increases economic growth in our region. As you might guess, this makes everyone at Stanislaus State so proud and excited to be a shining campus in the Central Valley! MV: There are so many great arts and music programs offered at the school; what can we do to get more community engagement? EJ: We have many distinguished alumni from our arts and music programs, and we hope to highlight their accomplishments in the near future in order to help more students understand how instrumental their Stan State education was in their lives. Additionally, the campus hopes to expand community events and activities to bring more people to campus to learn about, enjoy and participate in a whole host of activities that will include important artistic, music, theatre and intellectual events and activities. The campus also looks forward to hosting many more family-friendly events, such as our annual Fourth of July fireworks, outdoor concerts and outdoor movie events in the coming year. Finally, the campus will expand the events and activities offered at our Art Space on Main, located in downtown Turlock. MV: What is your favorite part about being a university president?

EJ: My favorite part of being a university president is the opportunity to meet with such a wide variety of people — students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members, K-12 teachers and administrators, government and business leaders, other college and university leaders and many more — all of whom care about education and helping the next generation prosper and become life-long learners. The stories that people share about their own pivotal college experiences, their dreams and aspirations, and their struggles and achievements, help me as a president to consider how to create a campus that is mindful of the vast and diverse array of experiences that our students bring with them when they come to the university. In this day and age, there are so many challenges, but with each challenge comes greater opportunity to think outside the box, to innovate, to dream and to implement new ways to forge ahead making Stanislaus State an integral and deeply embedded part of our community’s success story. It is such a privilege and a joy to work on this collaborative vision.

MV: Describe your ideal day. I think my ideal day is one where I get to meet with a variety of groups including students, faculty and others. I have loved meeting with community members because everyone has been so warm, welcoming and interested to learn more about Stanislaus State. In the more than four months I’ve been on campus, I’ve met well over 1,200 people and it has been a delight! The ideal day should also have some time to reflect and plan, and of course some personal time to spend with my husband and get some sleep and exercise, too! MV: Beatles or Stones? JAZZ&BLUES And the seasons accelerating into the hollidaze and the inevitable, CHRISTMAS TIME! But when calm thoughts prevail, ah yes I remember the reason for the season, to be thankful and generous of heart to those around you whether they be family of stranger. As Leon Russell who passed recently said in verse, “always be kind to a traveling stranger; always keep your love light burning….. cause it might be the prince of peace returning.” And we also lost Mose Allison one of my favorite Jazz pianists of lyrical whit. I remember being at a beach house in half moon bay in the 1960’s with Psychedelic posters and LP’s from Hendrix to the Grateful dead. Pawing through some LPs to spin unearthed an album: Mose Allison, Mose in your ear. The quirky cover showed Mose grinning, I noticed tunes name “your molecular structure”, “your mind is on vacation” and had to give it a spin. While listening I read the liner note by Ralph Gleason on Mose and was intrigued. Over the years I saw Mose coming through the west coast many times in different venues, always a blast. His lyrics are timeless and even speak to us today: “this world is just one trouble spot, some have plenty and others have not… you know I used to be troubled but I finally saw the light... now I don’t worry about a thing cause I know nothing going to be allright. Mose toured 65 years, recorded 31 albums and had a life well

Well folks this is it; the last month of 2016. Alongside mourning all the great musicians we have lost this year, let’s spend this month celebrating those who are still with us. Kicking things off on the 3rd at P. Wexford’s is Rob Hill Band. Rob’s signature Jazzy Blue sound is just the perfect accompaniment to the great atmosphere always on tap at one of the area’s best pubs. The following weekend sarting on the 9th we have funk and soul at Turlocks Vintage Lounge with the B-4 Dawn Band. Then on Saturday the 10th up at Black Oak is a favorite Shane Dwight and the next day, you can catch me with Ray Vazira at Deva Cafe for some breakfast tunes. Friday the 16th you have a whole bunch to choose from, Rob Hill will be back at P. Wexfords. The Portal is hosting a Blues night featuring Slingshot, Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood along with yours truly Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame.

Finishing things out on the 30th you can choose from Jeramy Norris in Sonora at the Bourbon Barrel and Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame will be up in Sacramento at the Torch Club. One final note, don’t forget that every Thursday in Stockton at Garlic Brothers Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood Host a Blues Jam open to all. I hope to see you out at a show.

first time Dania Hall was mentioned in the “Modesto Evening News” was in 1924 when the Danish Society dedicated the building to the city’s inhabitants. From that point on, Dania Hall was rented for meetings, theatre productions as well as music performances. Lo and behold, Dania Hall was even used as a skating rink in 1926. On the opening night the admission wasn’t only free, but ladies were given free skates as well! Hey! Those were the good ole days. To sum it up, Dania Hall, located on 5th and I streets in downtown Modesto, was kind of a happening place with many different purposes. There was no shortage of good times to be had there. I talked to a man from Danish descent who has fond memories of the Christmas Parties at Dania Hall. Coming in as a family you would enter the side of the building to enter “The Orchid’s” dining area, being greeted by the smell of the food; potatoes and gravy. After a scrumptious meal, the adults could get a high

ball at the little bar which was in the corner of the restaurant. Everyone would then go upstairs to the main hall where there was a big Christmas tree in the middle of the room. The stage had a background on it, where the kids were singing, accompanied by a pianist in front of the stage. Later Santa Claus would come out and give all the kids presents. Tthe kids would dance around the tree singing Danish songs that they didn’t necessarily understand. It was great fun and an event that a kid looked forward to all year. In this same place, for the past 12 years this Danish man has been practicing his martial art at the T’ai Chi Ch’uan Academy of Modesto. People still have a good time at Dania Hall. It has become a place for exercise, health and rejuvenation, good energy, friendship and peace of mind. Merry Christmas, Dania Hall! Come one, come all! Four wheels per leg multiplied by two equals Roller Skating Fitness! It’s been years since I put on some roller skates; they pretty much went into storage shortly after Roller King closed its doors. Since then I’ve seen the sport of roller skating evolve into roller-blades, long-board skateboards and some crazy kind of skating contraptions that use your entire body to propel you forward. They all do a great job when it comes to getting your workout with wheels on your feet. In fact, a 160-pound person will burn about 548 calories doing 60 minutes of roller skating, while a 200-pound person will burn about 683 calories in that same amount of time. As for me, I’m old-school and prefer 4 wheels on my skates instead of two. Inline skating is cool, but I’m thinking inline skating might be a bit harder and if you haven’t skated in a while. It’s probably best to start back with the basics, 4 wheels per skate instead of advancing to inline skating first. Ready, Set,

What an amazing year it’s been. Now that I am in retrospect, it’s making me insanely happy to think of all the awesome shops, galleries and restaurants Modesto has added in the past 12 months. Take a second to name three great things that you witnessed in our great city in 2016. Now keeping that thankful trend going, it’s time to give back to our amazing organizations. The Society for disABILITIES is showing pro-skier, Warren Miller’s films, which benefits the society’s Winter Unlimited program. So, on top of helping a fantastic cause, you also receive a free lift ticket to Bear Valley. I highly recommend this event to everyone, be sure to buy tickets ASAP because it is being shown December 2nd and 3rd. Though this event is super early in the month, there are still ways to participate in this program for the whole ski-season. Society for disABILITIES Winter Skiing Unlimited program gives blind, deaf, paraplegic, quadriplegic and disabled individuals the opportunity to ski and try snow activities. This stellar organization needs volunteers of all ages and skill levels from the commu-

nity to help at these events. Check out the website www.societyfordisabilities. org to see what you can do. Downtown will be the place to be this holiday, between the State’s Christmas movie marathons and the ice skating rink a couple blocks away and Rockin’ Holiday in 10th St Plaza, so much fun is in a compact area. I also couldn’t disregard Modesto’s easy access to a winter wonderland. Pinecrest and Dodge Ridge are way too close to us for you to not take a trip! This is going to be such a phenomenal month, we are so lucky to have Modesto’s organizations and volunteers.
