Going for a walk on these fall days is just about the best thing going as these last few days when the rain fell and cleared the air and brightened our sky. It has been a long time since rain made such a difference and those big rainbows were a welcome sight. There is normally a sense of calm when the leaves change, we get through Thanksgiving and then all of a sudden, everything speeds up again as we race toward the end of the year. It seems like yesterday Rockin’ Santa was in the Rockin’ North Pole but here we are, ready for opening night. But November was not calm as California rallied to support those who lost everything in Paradise and so many of our local people, companies and non-profits made amazing contributions. It will be really important that after the TV cameras leave in a few weeks, that we don’t forget and are still ready to support those who have lost everything as we get close to the holidays. We need to lend a hand here at home and we will need to lend extra hands this winter. We will keep you posted as opportunities to help are announced. If you have a donation program, please let us know so we can help you spread the word to events@ modestoview.com or message us @ modestoview One of the reasons I love Modesto is that there is a good group of “doers” here in our community. Many of these doers are the writers here at ModestoView, constantly creating events and activities and we are proud to support the others in town that are doers. Great to see the success of ModShop and Ruhi Sheikh, Kate Trompetter and Trisha Rosenow are making an amazing difference. Andrea and Jerome Murray are doers and have created Modesto on Ice that has changed our downtown. We here at ModestoView and Sierra Pacific wanted to bring the classic Christmas holidays back to downtown so we created Rockin’ Holidays five

years ago in 10th St Plaza and it gets bigger every year. Best of all, the people of our community have responded by supporting and attending these events. This is where it all works and becomes part of our community. We can’t back off. We have to keep innovating and creating and most of all, make these current events even better and make sure we support the new doers that are going to make a difference with new events and ideas. We hope to see you out at Rockin’ Holiday this year and we would love to hear what you think about all of these events so they can get even better. As December unfolds, we turn to our family and friends and make sure that we are all looking out for each other. I am so happy both of my girls are back living in Modesto and so excited for their futures. As kids grow up, get new jobs or start new families, these times when we are all

together mean even more. As we plan on giving, we hope you will keep it local and make sure that we keep our dollars here in town. Many of our locally owned companies make some of the biggest contributions to our city. This is how it works and I hope that you will check out the local companies that are featured and advertise in ModestoView and know that these are the ones that give back and invest in us, so we should support them back. Let’s finish our year strong Modesto. Let’s show that we care, have the talent, the creativity and the will to make this year better and begin our planning to make 2019 even better. the fires up north and those here in our community in need, there are so many ways you can lend a hand. One of the best organizations to help is the Salvation Army as they can help you connect to the Salvation Army office that is assisting Paradise and your donations go directly to programs. There are many needs here at home and you can help by being a bell ringer this season. Captain Breazeal has let us know that the local priorities are 1) Volunteering to be a bell ringer and you can sign up at www.registertoring.com 2) You can sponsor a family from the Angel Trees www.SalvationArmyModesto.org The Salvation Army and ABC10 are encouraging viewers to pick-up an Angel Tree tag and fulfill the wish of a child in our community. Jim is working on a new piece of art to share with our community, shared his bodies of works. He says that his paintings explain the “Meaning of Life,” through his creative mind, body, and soul. Jimmy uses latex house paint, glue, canvas, newspaper and magazines to create his thoughts & dreams. Laura is a self-taught artist, has a true passion for visiting MOMA museums across the county. tic Modesto business and civic leaders developed a wide-reaching campaign to promote the booming city of Modesto, then one of the fastest growing and prosperous cities in California. Alongside an advertising campaign to attract businesses and new residents to the city, these so-called “Boosters” also sponsored the erection of Modesto’s iconic centennial arch in 1912. A new initiative draws inspiration from these twentieth century Boosters in an effort to foster civic pride in Modesto today. Glorious Modesto is the brainchild of five modern-day Modesto Boosters – Amy Vickery, Jay Pink, Kate Trompetter, Lee Davis and Reggie Rucker -- who are passionate about Modesto and our creative community. The idea for Glorious Modesto emerged out of our participation in the Irvine Foundation New Leadership Network, organized by the Stanislaus Community Foundation, to bring together diverse emerging leaders across issues, sectors and generations to learn, build relationships, collaborate and innovate for a better future for their region. Glorious Modesto is a catalyst of creative initiatives that engender civic pride and connected community in our city. There are many amazing, creative things already happening across our wonderfully diverse city, and we celebrate that. And we want to identify and support more of them. I coordinate the annual Dickens Faire at the McHenry Museum and invite community members to volunteer their time to enrich the event with their enthusiasm. Dancers from Central West Ballet will perform in costume to music from The Nutcracker. Ken White, a local author, will be in attendance to sign his books. Come decorate an ornament, ice a cookie and listen to holiday stories while exploring the McHenry Museum between 9 AM and noon. December Movies Nobody has ever yelled “Freebird!” at one of my listening concerts. And that’s just the way I like it. The Modesto Unplugged live music series divides its programming between beautiful originals and re-imaginings of traditional folk tunes from all regions of the globe. The slate is full of styles and instrumentation you’re unlikely to find anywhere else in our area in a public setting. But each December, I break my own rule for one night only, when I gather some of my favorite culture companions together for a bit of fun. Our annual ELEGY showcase pays tribute to those notable musicians who have passed from this life during the calendar year. The sixth instalment of this always-popular evening will take place Saturday evening the 15th,

with a diverse lineup giving their renditions of Aretha, Dolores, film composer Johann Johansson and more. This year’s players include Alzara & Brother Spellbinder, Bethany Saint-Smith, Boscoe’s Brood, The Darcys, Grace Carrillo with chamber orchestra, and Taken Roads. These are wonderfully cool and supportive people who you all ought to meet and enjoy. INTER VIEW Jim Johnson – Gallo Center Repertory Company By Chris Murphy

Modesto is so fortunate to have local stars that are champions of stage and theatre performance. Not only that, we are fortunate the drama and performing arts are strong in our local schools and notably at Modesto Junior College. One of these local stars was responsible for bringing the entire performing arts department back to life in 1981, leading to decades of amazing performances, the development of new performers and the complete renovation of the MJC Auditorium complex. This was an amazing effort. His efforts were revolutionary and he was given the Stanislaus County Arts Council Excellence in Arts for Lifetime Achievement. Now today Jim Johnson has taken on the challenge of developing a completely new arts group at the Gallo Center for the Arts with the creation of the Gallo Center Repertory Company. Over the last few years, there have been some amazing performances like Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, The Exonerated, The Piano Lesson and To Kill a Mockingbird and recently Stand and Deliver. Jim holds a B.A. and M.A. degrees in Communication from California State University, East Bay and a PH.D. in Communication Arts and Sciences from the University of Southern California. Let’s find out what Dr. Jim Johnson has been up to lately. ModestoView: When was your first experience with theatre? Jim Johnson: I majored in Speech-Communication in college. All three of the colleges I attended--Diablo Valley College, Cal State, East Bay and the University of Southern California had combined Speech/Theatre programs. My first theatre production was a Reader’s Theatre performance of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milkwood. I’ve been hooked ever since It must have been a huge undertaking to rebuild the drama program at MJC; what was your biggest obstacle? In the late 1970’s a decision was reached to cancel all theatre productions at MJC. The decision was based on interpersonal staff communication problems. I was invited to head up a committee to look at the situation and to propose alternatives to the current program. The biggest challenge was starting from scratch--hiring new staff, creating new courses, defining the roles of personnel and creating a realistic budget. Thankfully, we got things right and the program has successfully been in business for over 30 years. MV: You were involved in the operations of the performing arts, but you wanted to get back into teaching. Why was that? JJ: After nine years in MJC administration, first as Dean of the Arts, Humanities & Communications division and Interim

This is where I started, where my heart was and where I wanted to end my career. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. MV: Tell us about your first partnership with the Gallo Center for the Arts. JJ: After a year of retirement, I received a call from Lynn Dickerson asking if I would be interested in talking to her staff about taking an Arts Education Coordinator position on a volunteer basis. The position would put me in contact with city and county school teachers, administrators and students. I would coordinate the Pathways to Creativity program which brings thousands of area students to performances at the Gallo Center. I enthusiastically accepted the position and coordinated the program for five years. MV: How do you describe the opportunity to create the Gallo Center Repertory Company? JJ: During my tenure as Arts Education Coordinator, I reached out to area theatre groups such as Prospect Theater, MJC Theatre, Cal, State, Stan Theatre and Merced Theatre to look for ways in which we could combine forces and present theatre productions at the Gallo Center. During this time, I also helped Sankofa Theatre mount their first African-American theatre production, “The Piano Lesson,” at the Center. After several seasons of producing collaborations, I recommended to Lynn Dickerson that I felt that we were ready to go on our own occasionally and produce our own shows. Our first solo effort was “A Christmas Memory, The Musical.” It was presented in honor of Bette Belle Smith.

MV: What was the first Gallo Rep performance? JJ: The first official Gallo Rep production was “The Diary of Anne Frank.” I produced the show and it was directed by Heike Hambley. It sold out, too. MV: The Gallo Center has now taken on the YES Company. What opportunities do you see there? JJ: The main goal here is to continue the excellence of this program. Melanie MelaneeWyatt created one of the finest community youth programs in the country. We will continue to partner with the Stanislaus County Office of Education in the running of this program. Some of the opportunities that I see include expanding our after school youth program to include additional classes. Also, to bring new staff on board to help coordinate the touring bully show that performs throughout the school year MV: This season’s holiday performance is “Tiny Tim’s Christmas Carol.” This is not your average Dickens presentation. What makes this so interesting? JJ: It is a wonderful reimagining of the Dickens classic. It is written by the prominent American playwright, Ken Ludwig. Ludwig is also the author of our Christmas offering last season, “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Kimberly Ogden is directing. In this version, Tiny Tim and his friends conspire to get Scrooge to let Tim’s father to have Christmas day off from work. They come up with tricks and magic to show Scrooge what the meaning of Christmas really is. The play is full of humor and surprises. The show will appeal to children and adults of all ages.

MV: Tell us something that people may not know about the Gallo Rep. JJ: In the two years that we have been in existence we have been fortunate to secure the talents of so many creative people in our area--actors, directors, designers, technicians, videographers, photographers, etc. The Center has recently hired a new digital marketing manager who now helps us get our message out in exciting ways on social media. I am thrilled about the number of people who want to be involved with the GCRC MV: Is it difficult to take a new twist on these classic characters and stories? JJ: This is one of the things that has always excited me about theatre--the opportunity to approach a story in a new and exciting way. A classic has endured because it is open to interpretation. Also, a classic may be presented in a way that reflects the time that it is presented in. This is why Shakespeare’s stories will last forever. I recently directed the stage version of the film “Stand and Deliver.” The play takes place in the 1980’s. We were able to give the text a new spin by emphasizing its relevance to today’s immigration controversies MV: What can we look forward to in the upcoming season? JJ: After Tiny Tim we will be presenting “Steel Magnolias” and “Tuesdays with Morrie.” “Steel Magnolias” is one of the most popular plays of the past 20 years. It is a comedy with some strong dramatic content. It takes place in a southern beauty parlor where the women meet and discuss life. “Tuesdays with Morrie” is the play version of Mitch Albom’s best-selling memoir about his Tuesday meetings with his dying professor. Morrie helps teach Mitch how to face life and live. I’m privileged to be playing the role of Morrie in this production MV: Describe your ideal day in Modesto. JJ: Coffee and the newspaper in the morning with my dog by my side. Then some work on my current project. A five-mile walk on the Virginia Corridor. Touch base with my colleagues at the Gallo Center. A glass of wine and a nice dinner with my friends MV: And the most important question: Beatles or Stones? JJ: Beatles all the way

the Season to Celebrate!

The weekend after Thanksgiving when the leaves turn and the excitement in the air turns festive. Whether is it the holiday parties, the new snow on the ground or the anticipation of winter break, there is just a cool feeling in the air. We are getting ready for Warren Miller Ski films, The Ill List and of course the festive nights of Rockin’ Holiday and the excitement of Modesto on Ice, ugly sweaters and spiked hot cocoa with family and friends makes it all special. There is so much happening and a million places to be, so we are to help. A night on the town means a night on the town. If you are going to get all spiffed up to head downtown to go ice skating, you need to think about what you are going to do before, especially after skating. This is what we call Aprés Skate. You had a great time, skated singles and doubles, and now it is time to relax, with a special holiday cocktail, and enjoy downtown Modesto. Right around the corner from Modesto on Ice is our own Rockin’ Holiday, where you can meet up with Rockin’ Santa and experience the Rockin’ Snow and the Rockin’ Tree. You can walk down 11th St and find so many tasty options, or walk over to the Gallo Center, Prospect Theatre or The State Theatre for a show. Amazing Holiday Performances There are some shows that you just can’t miss this during the holiday season. The Central West Ballet production of the Nutcracker is a rite of passage for any dancer in our area and this is a great Christmas performance that gets you in the spirit and there are some good matinee shows. One of the biggest shows to hit Modesto has been the Brian Setzer Christmas Rocks Tour on the 20th and the Dave Koz Christmas on the 21st. There are some other really good shows at the Gallo Center. It would be easy to list every musical happening of worth in our scene from 2018-Grammy Winner John McCutcheon, the incarnation of the Drum Love Drum Circle, the first annual International Woman’s Day Music extravaganza, the incomparable Porchfest, the Buddy Holly Tribute, Red Tie Arts’ phenomenal concert series, the Sensations reboot, Bikes and Blues for Shoes, Music on the Plaza, Dia De Los Muertes de Modesto bringing musica suavecito to THOUSANDS of folks, Zasu Pitts Memorial Orchestra conquering the MAMA awards like no other before, brave, steadfast Modshop Buskers and the Rockin Holidays! Although December ushers in a finale of sorts, we get a jump on what the future holds in local music. On Saturday, December 15 a very special benefit for Inter Faith Ministries of Greater Modesto will bring a unique stable of uber talented musicians performing tasty, eclectic personal versions of holiday music (see the many A Very Special Christmas album collection for reference). This all ages concert will be hosted by owner Lorena Loftis and the staff at Deva Cafe. Downbeat is at 6 pm and 100% of the

$5 gate fee will serve families in need via the IFM agency services. Enjoy fantastic music by artists like Neil Buettner, Ava Merchant and Willie Hines- just to name a few. Reservations strongly suggested. Most every Songwriter found their voice as a choir member in their musical history. For a true treat in acoustic harmonies, attend the Gallo Choral Christmas celebration on December 14 and 15. Deva Sunday Breakfast Music is bringing back the powerhouse Americana combo of Patty and Pete on December 9 from 10am to noon. These pilots of two beloved Roots bands-The Patty Castillo Davis Band and Blues Box Bayou Band will play their combined brand of Bluesy-Folk on the Bayou with some bilingual and holiday tunes thrown in. It’s with a heavy heart we say goodbye to those who’s music entertained us, gave a voice to a cause and created limitless beauty for us to enjoy into the future. BLUES VIEW Closing The Books on 2018 By Big Earl Matthews Here we are friends, closing the books on 2018. It was a good year in many respects. Kicking it off on the 1st Tony and the Tuff Times will be at Ridgeways in Modesto. December 3rd is a huge tribute to the late great Lazy Lester. You can check out some of the best blues players central CA has to offer including Kyle Roland and Rusty Zinn for a night you won’t forget paying tribute to one of the best harmonica players that have ever lived. On the 6th in Sacramento, you can check out Joe Louis Walker at the B Street Theater in Sac. Joe is a phenomenal guitar player and has a high cutting voice that he uses to great effect. If you love great guitar you can also check out Elvin Bishop in Santa Cruz at Moe’s Alley on the 9th. Stockton’s own Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood will be at The Brick House in Elk Grove on the 14th. Jeramy is a smoking hot guitar man and can work a crowd like no other. He is one to see if you haven’t yet.

It’s December already. I can’t be the only one trying to figure out where the year went. It seems like summer just ended and threw us into winter. Did we even have fall? Who’s the fat guy in red? We couldn’t possibly be ready for holidays yet, right? Ick! Should I be shopping or something? And a resolution...Quick! I need an un-attainable goal so I can hate myself more than usual. I resolve to not wait to write stuff until the last minute... Join me in saying hello to new Sacramento Friends. Comics from the 209 have been a part of the Sacramento scene and vice versa so I am happy to make one more connection. FIT VIEW Clean Air Fitness By Efren Martinez

During the month of November, we experienced some of the unhealthiest air unfortunately from all the massive forest fires all across California. During this time we were advised to spend as little time outdoors as possible. This is a real drag for those of us who enjoy exercising outside, myself included. Honestly, if your home isn’t equipped with the latest air filtering systems than the air you are breathing in your home may not be that much healthier inside than outside. Sure there are Elevation fitness mask and N95 mask that one can use to filter the air, but it’s not 100% full proof especially if you have facial hair plus they are real germy. For myself, I don’t care for any kind of mask for the reason that the air we exhale is roughly 78 nitrogen, 15-18%

oxygen, 4-5 % carbon dioxide, 0.96 argon the CO2 being of course used by plants during photosynthesis. That’s all fine if your a plant, but my body requires the cleanest and highest amount of oxygen for exercising. I can’t get that while wearing a mask not to mention the carbon dioxide I just exhaled in the mask is not the smartest thing to inhale back into my body. My biggest recommendation to maintain your fitness level when the air quality is unhealthy is to go to your local gym where the climate control is carefully and cleanly monitored. If you have a home gym as I do, make sure your Hepa-air-filter in your heating/cooling system is changed once a week versus once a month. Another idea is to invest in a portable room Hepa-air-filter system. Keep your doors and windows closed and don’t push your bodies to the hard winded extremes during your workouts. You’ll have plenty of time to get back up to speed just as soon as the air clears. Right now let’s stay focused on maintaining your fitness and being smart about it during bad air quality days. This winter if you have a fireplace, please check before you burn on any given day.

Happy holidays! I hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving break. There is so much to look forward to this holiday season in the area. If you have not been to the Modesto on Ice rink yet, I highly recommend it, especially during the nighttime when the rink (literally) lights up! Now that Thanksgiving is over and we have said our thanks it is the perfect time to give back to those who are not as fortunate. The way my family does this is through Soroptimist. This organization

allows you to pick a tag from the Christmas tree set up at Vintage Faire mall and buy gifts for a child who might not receive any gifts otherwise. Some other favorite traditions of mine are Central West Ballet’s performance of the Nutcracker, which will take place at our lovely Gallo Center for the Arts, and the Celebration of Lights Parade followed by the Rockin’ Holiday tree lighting, both on December 1st in downtown Modesto. There will be live music and lots of local businesses participating, as should you! Modesto Hospice center will also being holding a Christmas tree lighting the following day at Memorial Medical Center. Still can’t get enough of all of these events? The State Theater will be holding a Warren Miller Film Tour on December 1st, Sinatra at the State on December 6th, and a poetry slam December 8th, as well as much more! Well, I hope you have lots of plans for the holidays and if you didn’t already, now you do!

Foresight, having a sense of the future, is essential to our survival and safety. The Chinese have two good proverbs about foresight: “Weaving a net is better than praying for fish at the edge of the water” and “Remember to dig the well long before you get thirsty”. This is what I get out of it. Prosperity, health and happiness are things we have to work for and defend. Good foresight means that I don’t sit idly hoping for the best. Or leaving it up to others to figure things out. It means that I do all I can to understand the situation at hand as best I can and act on it. I might want to get even more educated in order to make prudent provisions for the future. And I must be realistic. Hopes and dreams alone won’t cut it. I must be aware of the circumstances, the way things actually are. Only then can I grasp what needs to be done and solutions will become evident. There was the amazing story on NPR last month of the Yuba Community College chancellor who was the only one who

didn’t have to be evacuated at the time of the Butte fire because he had had the foresight to clear the land of trees and brush through the years around his house. He had always known that living in a remote, rural area would require him and this wife to be prepared for devastating fires. And so they resolved to get two fire pumps and hoses, and whatever they would need to have or do in order to be safe. It worked. Not only did their place survive because of their foresight, but they were also able to save the livestock of their neighbors and look after their properties. A very inspiring story! The question is: How do we develop good foresight? Most likely through experience and observation, listening to others and learning from mistakes.
