EDITOR’S Greetings Modesto Fans

Happy Holidays from the Murphy’s: Abbey, Madison, Chris and Becky This has been a fast year. It has been an exciting year and it has been a year where we have really brought our community together. As we all celebrate our respective holiday traditions, we are also very thankful as we spend our Thanksgiving weekend on the doorstep to December. We are so very excited to introduce you to our very own Modesto Rockin’ Santa. You will be seeing a lot of him. I am so very thankful for my wonderful girls and my family. My wife Becky is so creative, talented and caring. Seeing our girls off on their own, I realize what an amazing mother she is and her decision to be a full time mom instead of a hot-shot architect after college was truly the best decision ever. I am thankful that Madison and Abbey are smart and successful as they start to fly and we are so proud seeing how caring and thoughtful they are to their friends and new relationships. It is wonderful to see that our advice and direction as parents really meant something to them and are ready for the next chapters. It makes our holiday times together even more special. I am so very thankful and proud of our little ViewCrew. The ViewCrew of writers and contributors truly care about making the Modesto area a better place and share their love with our readers and our community. They are truly an amazing group in our community and I am so lucky to share these times with them. Together, I know we can continue to change Modesto for the better and ModestoView will be a way to promote positive change. Our goal has always been to “Serve Civic Pride Daily”. There is so much talent here in Modesto and we celebrate the design and creativity of the amazing Pete Grimaldi that pulls all of our wacky wishes together into one beautiful magazine every month. I am amazed every time the talented Michael J Mangano can take a rough idea sketch and bring it to life beyond my wildest wishes. We were honored with three 2013 MARCOM awards for their creative work, 2 Gold Awards for our July and October issues and an Honorable mention for our August. Amazing. It is so cool how the ViewCrew all fits together to do something good. Finally I wish the happiest of Holidays, a Merry Christmas and much thanks to all of our readers that make ModestoView a part of their lives. We thank all of our advertisers that help us bring these ideas to life in print and allow us to keep growing every month so that with every issue, every post on Facebook, every Instagram, Tweet and article, we reach more people each month and spread the good words, deeds, events and happenings. Best to you all and thank you so much,

FAMOUS December in Modesto Words and Photos by Ruben Porras I’m sitting alone in the loft at Preservation Coffee and Tea and I can’t help but stare down and look at the world happening below me. It is a chilly Saturday morning and the few people that are here are bundled up like their next stop is a mountain climbing adventure in the Swiss Alps. California is funny that way. Other places in the world endure extreme cold for months at a time but when we have one day of weather when the temperature is anywhere near 40∞F we tend to act as though we will simply perish in the streets. Beyond the weather change, November was rather uneventful for me. I spent part of the month scared to death to leave my house because I didn’t want to get sick. My immune system will always be weak because of the anti-rejection medicine I take and the winter will always freak me out a bit. I can’t fight illness like normal folks. As this is just a part of my life now, I need to just accept it and move forward as best I can. A common theme in my column this year is the speed at which time seems to be moving. My girlfriend reminded me yesterday that Thanksgiving was but a week away and that was hard to believe. I wanted to argue with her and explain to her that her words had to be lies. It feels like the year just started. I’m certainly not ready for another birthday but I know March will be here very soon. December in Modesto will be exciting and colorful. Light parades will send colorful moving sculptures into the streets, Santa Claus will be a common site and shops will be bustling. Do Modesto a favor this year and shop at local shops. Opt for gifts of a more personal nature that will benefit the community that we all call home. Flip through this issue and you will find some of my favorite shops. I love purchasing gifts from places such as Jaunt Adventure Gear and Intrinsic Elements and I will likely buy a few gift certificates from local restaurants also. Get even more personal and take someone out to show them our local

scene. Spread the love. We all could use a little more love.

battles and how I’ve survived them.

I’ll keep this article short this month. I really don’t have a whole lot to say but I do need to do something that I promised to do-

87th year be one of your best!

I received an email from a man named Brent a couple of weeks ago and he asked me if I could wish his Aunt Leigh a happy birthday. According to Brent, Leigh reads my column every month and she really looks forward to it. He said that her health is not all that great anymore and that she derives a bit of inspiration from my health

Happy birthday Aunt Leigh. May your Smile as much as possible this month. Enjoy the holidays with your family and friends. Play in a pile of leaves, take a walk in the rain and listen to Christmas music even if it drives you a bit crazy. The photos this month are from a quick outing to downtown Ceres. Old towns always have great photo opportunities. Follow my adventures on Facebook at facebook.com/rubenwriter or on Twitter where I am @rubenwriter.

Modesto is truly the city of “Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health.” The City of Modesto and the Central California Art Association (CCAA) announce a joint venture in the production of a vibrant “Modesto-centric” themed environmental calendar. The City and the CCAA have a 42-year history of working together to promote the visual arts in Modesto. The calendar features original artwork by CCAA artists and provides useful tips for preserving the natural beauty of our central valley. The calendar can be viewed at http://www.modestogov.com/pwd/docs/Environmental-Calendar.pdf Calendars are available for purchase from CCAA at the Mistlin Gallery, 1015 J Street, Modesto.

ART Buy Art by local artists. Shop your local Art Walk stops. by Jim Christiansen

Local artists encourage you to buy art for holiday gifts. Downtown Galleries and Art Walk stops are open most of the month, with art jewelry, paintings, sculpture, fabric art, ceramics for sale at reasonable prices at the Chartreuse Muse, Picasso’s Gourmet Deli and Gallery, Crow Trading, Mistlin Gallery. Café DEVA and Concetta have art on the walls you can purchase, for yourself, or that somebody you need to get an original gift. They also stock cards and prints. All sorts of styles and designs await you. At Picasso’s, you can find one of Jordi Camps specially painted books. And while you’re at it, stop at Beckles Candy on Tenth Street for your chocolate needs. Downtown Modesto Third Thursday Art Walk is December 20, but most locations open for shopping during the holiday season, so don’t wait to get the right art for your gift giving needs. The Chartreuse Muse and Gift Box section at Mistlin Gallery, usually do a bustling holiday business for small items, jewelry and cards. David Glaister is the Muse featured December artist. Intrinsic Elements, C’est Joli and more are open, along with the mix of antiques, collectibles, local and other art at Crow Trading. The Central California Art Association members holiday show is open, each grid loaded with art for sale. And this is the last show at Mistlin Gallery for the year, and for the current décor. January has the gallery slated for new paint, new layout, to open the 2014 season. The CCAA has executed a ten-year lease, in collaboration with Mistlin Gallery namesake and patron Tony Mistlin, so a gallery facelift is on the agenda of this ten year run. Expect a brighter Mistlin Gallery when the painting is done, and the “Art in the Family” show opens. Support the gallery painting effort by purchasing a City of Modesto Environmental Calendar, featuring local artists Linda Knoll, Jack McBride,

Ana Barber, Virginia White, and more, only $15 at MIstlin Gallery. “Art in the Family,” is chaired by artist Milt Bullard, with its theme inspired by Milt’s grandson expressing a wish to show his art with his grandfather. The show is open to CCAA members and non-members by application and jury, where a family gathering of artists on display in small groupings. Pick up a prospectus at the Mistlin Gallery, 1015 J Street, Modesto. Mistlin Gallery is also shaking up its show schedule, with the “Young at Art” Young Masters show moving from the first of the year to March, a new format for its annual Spring Show, a Dan Petersen Retrospective show in the Summer, and a Graffiti Summer event themed members show in the Spring. Check in on other changes, schedule notes at the web site http://ccartassn.org. Membership for the nonprofit Central California Art Association is $50 annually A note on some North Modesto local art spots. In McHenry Village there is Hale Frame Shop in the back corner of the center. Trewin Framery and Uno Sergento Gallery in the One Stop Design Center are out on Pentecost Drive off Kiernan. Trey Reed has his studio/gallery by appointment out behind Green’s Market North Modesto location, and NASCO West out on Stoddard for a variety of art supplies. Kudos again to Modesto Junior College Art Gallery for recent show of Alumni Masters, and subsequent High School Art

Teachers Show on the East Campus. I don’t get the information quite soon enough for the column, so pays to check in and see if the MJC Art Club has the Gallery Open during the week. And thanks to John Griswold and local Lions Club for calling me out to help judge art for a Lions art competition featuring students from Shackleford Elementary School. Good to

see what students come up with. To get an art event into ModestoView, email me at mercenary_graphics@yahoo.com Finally, if you want to give a gift to our community, consider a donation to the State Theatre’s effort to raise $200,000 for its digital film transition so our historic film house shows well into the 21st Century.

BAR Noel at Nino’s Place (To be sung to the tune of “Jingle Bells”)

By Kate Serpa

Dashing down McHenry,

Photos by Philip Johnson

In your big fat lifted truck. Why are your brights on? Tailgaters freaking suck. But I know I’ll be just fine, Left turn at the neon sign, Two ‘Excuse Me’ shots if you please! Got to Nino’s just in time! OH Nino’s Place, OH Nino’s Place, Ten beers on tap and more, Hot bartenders pour great drinks, It’s your ultimate December score! OH Nino’s Place, OH Nino’s Place, It may seem really far. A short drive is worth your while though, Because it’s a fantastic bar! … you people should consider yourselves lucky. I was going to write the whole damn article in holiday singsong fashion until Phil poured the rest of the peppermint Schnapps down the drain. I called him something that was very un-Christmasy, and he reminded me that 3 a.m. is not the time to be composing drunken lyrical interpretations of holiday classics. Bah humbug, Phil! Don’t you know Christmas caroling is less fun sober? Why do you think carolers always have thermoses? You think they’re really carting around cocoa? No, sir. It’s liquefied Christmas cheer (otherwise known as brandy -- it’s good for the vocal chords). ‘Tis the season, Modesto! It’s easy to get caught up in your own snow-globe bubble of home bar/downtown scene, but sometimes it’s good to burst out and go somewhere off the beaten path. I for one am guilty of not straying far from my regular circuit and often do forget about all Modesto has to offer. I confess. I am guilty; stick me on the naughty list. Usually when Phil and I set up a bar interview, we go during the week at a pre-Happy Hour time in order to catch the bar at its

8

slowest so we can have a nice, uninterrupted chat with the bartender, however, Nino’s Place bartender, the lovely Tarah Viscarra, had a different approach. Nino’s Place was my first midnight-Saturday night concert and Crown-fueled interview. It was packed on the patio, and there was a live band playing and people were dancing and playing pool and smoking and drinking and laughing and I had to yell my questions at Tarah while she was slinging drinks behind the bar and she yelled her answers back to me and it was awesome. And Nino’s does not short you on the awesome; pool tables, darts, free line dancing lessons, karaoke, HDTVs playing whatever reindeer games you fancy, no-cover ongoing live music, beer pong, a sizable back patio for dancing and drinking, two bars, a diverse mix of fun patrons, Tarah making shots behind the bar like a boss with bar manager Mike Haley, constant drink specials, and a partridge in a pear tree, people. Lovely Tarah has been at the locally owned and operated Nino’s since it changed hands six months ago. She states, “It rocks here! We’re on the outskirts so we get a really

mixed crowd. We have an inside bar and an outside bar; we do tons of live music -- I love it.” I did bring up with her that many perceive Nino’s as strictly a biker bar, to which she responded: “Hell yes we’re a biker bar! But people also should really know everyone is welcome here -- the more the merrier!” And ‘tis the season to be merry, my friends. When talking to Nino’s patrons, one word is consistently kept coming up: rocks. The

bar rocks, the b a n d s rock, the pool rocks, the customers rock, Tarah undeniably rocks, the location rocks, and I had a whiskey on the rocks … and now I’m all rocked out on the Christmas cheer. I have to go, everyone. I have some serious caroling to do. Happy Holidays, Modesto! 5219 McHenry Ave, Modesto, CA www.facebook.com/ninosplacerocks

PERFORMING

Holiday and Tax Break Gifts

A Time to Perform in December by Kaye Osborn They sing! They dance! They act! Pass by Center Stage Kids while the students are in class: you will hear laughter, applause, and singing. You will see smiles, bright eyes, and team building! Center Stage Kids located at 1217 H Street in downtown Modesto was founded by Dawn Peterson. The staff consists of nine amazing women who teach singing, dancing, and acting. This year eighty children from the ages of 5-18 attend classes. They come from all over the county and as far as Tracy, Newman and Manteca. The environment is nurturing, very positive and fun! Children gain confidence and make new friends while increasing their self-esteem and self-worth. Special guests are invited to provide unique workshops and share their knowledge of the show business industry. This year Chris McPherson, a former Modesto resident who works at the Disney University, choreographed a special dance for their upcoming variety shows on Dec. 7 at Johansen High School at 2 PM and 6 PM. Christmas Town will include songs and original sketches. Tickets are $6. They can be purchased through the CSK website, Centerstagekids.net or by calling 604-0411. The 2 PM show will be interpreted for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing by Mark Medina and Kaye Osborn. Edwin Hawkins, who is an uncle of one of the students, gave a Gospel workshop. Hawkins is a 4 Grammy winning artist who wrote “Oh Happy Day”. High school students are encouraged to direct and cho-

reograph. They are always expanding and challenging their experiences. Lin Sexton writes original sketches (mini-plays) and songs for CSK. Bailey Johnson, a 16- year -old Enochs student, loves CSK because it is a supportive, learning environment. Her dream job is to become a co-anchor on The Today Show. Tibari Devone, a 16-yearold Gregori student and Edwin Hawkins nephew says CSK stretches him more. He dreams of becoming a musician just like his uncle. Each year some of the CSK teachers and students travel to Slovenia to direct a Performing Arts Summer Camp for young people. CSK is accepting new applicants on Jan. 6. There are a couple of big things you can do to make a difference here in Modesto. Besides the traditional and holiday gifts this season, there are the gifts that can be a big help on your taxes next year. One of the best things you can do to lower your tax liability and help our community is help the State Theatre go digital. Without digital projection, we will miss out on many new indie films as movie studios discontinue actual film distribution. The State will still maintain its 35mm system so we still get the best of the vintage films. How can you help? We turned to one our local lawyers that specialized in estate and tax planning, Lou Friedman. Here are his tips. Year-end Gifts Can Save Taxes Now is the time to think about some year-end charitable gifts that can reduce your estimated tax bill on January 15 and your balance due on April 15. We have some great charities serving this community. Now is a time you can help them fulfill their mission and help yourself with a reduced tax bill. To take a charitable contribution deduction you must itemize your deductions. If you are close to going over the standard deduction amount try to get next year’s charitable contributions into this year and also pay your April 10 property tax bill before year end. Next year take the standard deduction and then alternate years between itemizing deductions and the standard deduction. If you are over 70 1Z2 you are required to take Minimum Distributions from your retirement plans. For 2013 you can direct up to $100,000 from your IRA account to a charity and count that toward the RMD for the year without having to pick the amount up in your taxable income. You do not get an itemized deduction, but the exclusion from income works out better. For more information: Lou Friedman Gianelli & Associates LFriedman@Gianelli-law.com (209) 521-6260

UNDERGROUND Center Stage Conservatory

by Kate Serpa

Live theatre is probably not your number one choice for weekend entertainment -understandable. Theatre is something reserved for weekends in the city and trips to the Gallo Center and isn’t as casual as, say, going to a movie. Au contraire, señor. Unbeknownst to me and a majority of Modestans, there are a number of very alive and forward thinking independent theatres scattered throughout downtown. I normally write the bar column in this fine publication, but Phil recently informed me of a hidden theatre downtown and their very fun upcoming events. Being the good, sometimes sober person I am, I took it upon myself to share the knowledge-wealth with you fine people. Located across the street from Tresetti’s (last month’s featured bar) on the basement level of the legal building is Center Stage Conservatory -- literally the most underground theatre in Modesto of which Traci Sprague and Megan James are the queen

bees. “I think we have to train Modesto to realize there’s stuff going on here and to go out and experience it,” states Sprague. And with an ongoing season of shows, an expansive youth program, and the Rebels Without Applause improv group, there’s a lot to experience at CSC. And, for those

Prospect Theater Project

of you who are interested in getting involved, auditions are open to everyone, no experience necessary. If you’re a local writer, Center Stage can host cold reads of your work to hear your genius read aloud/receive feedback on your work. And space is available to be rented out for any art-driven event you may want to throw. “We want to fuel the arts in the area,” says James; “and inspire local artists to continue to produce their work,” added Sprague. And before I let you go, two more important points. One) CSC’s newest show, Mother Courage, is coming up in January and should be a fantastic production, and

I‘m sure many of you have been to see some

12

Two) Four words: Princess Bride Drinking Game. December 13 &14, CSC actors will be putting on an interactive performance of the classic film with beer to boot. Inconceivable? No, my friends -- most excellent. www.centerstagemodesto.com Facebook Group Page: Center Stage Conservatory

“PTPs brilliant, situation desperate” is a quote by August Strindberg and the inspiration for the name of the PTP theatre Project. of the great plays put on by the PTP over the last 13 years. Whether at the Current location of the theatre, at 520 Scenic Drive in Modesto or at one of the larger theatres in town. If not, you should try and make it out to their latest effort, Mauritius which runs through Dec 8th. I myself have attended 4 plays that the PTP and have plans to see many more, including the current one which is billed as a mystery. The reason I am writing about the PTP is that it is going through some big changeschanges for the better to be sure. The PTP is moving to a new, larger location downtown on 1214 K Street. For those of you who love the versatility of the old theatre, fear not.

The new layout will be larger and will accommodate nearly twice as much seating. It will however, remain a fluid space. All of the seating and staging will be mobile as in the past. This allows for a lot of freedom and as PTP fans know this freedom is not wasted. One of my personal favorite things about visiting the theatre is seeing how it is transformed from show to show and this tradition will carry on in the new location. This space will also be available to rent for

special events and concerts as permitted by the theatre schedule. Now is time to get down to the nitty gritty. This new space is a complete tear-down-tothe-studs remodel, including wiring and some plumbing. Most of the work is being done by volunteers - which is wonderful but it is still going to cost money get this boat in the water. In fact, the estimated total cost of the remodel is roughly $150,000. This is where you can help. Please take a

moment and go to prospecttheatreproject. org and give whatever you can by locating the 2013 Capital Campaign button. A thriving arts community is very important. This cannot be overstated in my opinion. We are lucky to have places like the State Theatre, The Gallo Arts Center, Center Stage Conservatory and the PTP in Modesto. In my opinion, these are the jewels in the crown of our town. It is the responsibility of all of us to help make sure these places don’t just survive but thrive in our community. People like myself and many others dedicate our lives to making sure Modestans have a chance to see and experience art and all we ask is for your support. In closing, I encourage you to visit the PTP web page and take a look at the calendar section of the ModestoView. Go out and see a show or visit a gallery this weekend.

ROCKABILLY

Rockabilly Rockin’ Wranglers By Jennifer Allsup Chris Murphy’s note: We have had a very exciting year here in Modesto now that we have taken our place as the birthplace of Rockabilly and celebrated the legendary Don Maddox of the Maddox Brothers and Rose. Now we move ahead to actually become a global home base for Rockabilly music. Rockin’ Rick Tores is one of the fireballs of the new Rockabilly generation. Not only is he local, he is taking Rockabilly to the next level with his Hi Ho Silver Records that will soon be moving to Modesto and touring all over the USA and spreading the Rockabilly gospel. Modesto is so lucky to have people like this in our community and our own Rockabilly Princess Jennifer Allsup caught up with Rockin’ Rick Tores.

ModestoView:

When did you find your comfortable place in the Rockabilly Scene? Rockin’ Rick Torres: I don’t feel that I set out to find comfort in the rockabilly scene. I have always been influenced by 50’s rock’n roll. Every thing from my childhood from 50’s diners, to films, my moms’ obsession with Elvis and the Beatles and my dad always listening to classic rock and some cool stuff like Commander Cody. The very first show I went to as a kid was a festival known as Strawberry Festival that was the year LaBamba was filmed and Los Lobos was there playing all of Ritchie Valens Hits. I think that and watching LaBamba and the Buddy Holly story over and over again really influenced me. As a teen I was into Punk but still liked the primitive sounds of 50’s rock roll. I always wanted a band, and at the time all our friends were playing in punk bands. I didn’t jump on to playing gigs until my 20’s and all I wanted to play was Rockabilly and Rock’n Roll, basically hepcat music. Now when we started I hadn’t found our sound and were going under a name like Frankenstein 59 at the time. We would get booked with psychobilly bands which I love, but when it came time for us to play we didn’t sound traditional or psycho more neo. We changed the name of the band the rest is history. This is our best line up yet. MV: What do you see happening with HiHo Silver Records in 2014? Do you have new artists that are waiting to hit the scene? RT: Hi Ho Silver records has many new and exciting things happening in 2014! We have decided to pack up the family and studio, and are relocating to the city of Modesto in December of this year. We have new artists signed to our label, and plan

on focusing on putting out these new and old acts on 45’s and CDs. So far we have been focusing on the booking and finding new acts and producing songs that have been featured on the Viva Las Vegas compilations. It is time to record our current acts. Once again, we (Rhythm Wranglers, Geronimo and the Skalpers) will be booked on one of the largest rockabilly show in the world, Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend #17. We are scheduling a tour through California and Nevada during April 11-21 in 2014 with special guests Dale Rocka and the Volcanos. The Volcanoes are very excited for their first trip to the US visiting all the way from Italy, ending our tour with us in VLV 17. We will also will be having the legendary Roddy Jackson (of the Merced Blue Notes/Kent Whitt & the Downbeats) touring overseas and stopping off at several locations throughout Europe and the United States And we will also have Roddy and Jailbreak playing a killer event in Texas the very first annual Viva La Grasa with a whole bunch of other great act from some of the other Record Labels that are hot such as Wild Records & Rhythm Bomb Records. MV: What has been your biggest accomplishment and biggest failure as an artist and company owner? RT: I would have to say my biggest accomplishment would being able to find talent in people now mind you I’m not doing any thing special, just pointing out to the person or band their hidden talents that they need to focus on or little hooks that can benefit their sound but also not losing their original vision. My biggest failure would have to be losing time with my family due to touring but thank goodness they are very supportive.

MV: How has your recording process evolved over the years? RT: Now when it comes to the recording process, we have pretty much have stayed the same with recording live in one room with the band being mic’d. The main thing that has changed is location over the years. When we started we only had a few bands and were recording out of a small garage we called the dungeon due to it being so small dark and under our home at the time. When I recorded the Midnight Trio’s recordings they had driven all the way from Visalia and the whole garage was flooding. So you could imagine how nerve racking that was. You have a vintage drum set submerged in water and a bunch of electrical equipment plugged in. I wasn’t sure if some one was going get bbq’d. Those recordings to this day happen to be some of the best stuff I’ve recorded. MV: Best advice for younger generation? RT: Now advice for younger gen is to just keep at it . You will have tuff days and some rough non paying shows but truly that is not what it’s about it’s that feeling of satisfactory that is felt down the road that I have created this music for people to enjoy . It’s the one of the best things that ever happen to me . MV: Your first vinyl influences? RT: I think the first LP and 45s I owned were hand-me-downs, every thing from Kiss, Stray Cats, Misfits, The Boss, Billy Idol, Cramps, Bowie. Honestly I think every thing in its own way is inspiration. We are also going have a killer Christmas show on the 22nd of December we are planning on having several of the new and old acts to play for this event and are trying to raise money for toy drive You will see acts such as Geronimo & the Skalpers ,Darlin’ Clementine, RRRW, Jailbreak, The Thirsty Three, Miss Michelle, and special guest Betty Ann & the Lonesome Three & DJ Savage Salvador !!!!

ast month I asked people to nominate buildings for Modesto’s first endangered buildings list. These are structures or landscapes that have become part of Modesto’s identity either because of their design or history and are in danger or threat because they are under used, abandoned, vandalized, not maintained, or may be torn down. The nominations so far are: - Greyhound Bus Station, 10th and G, has been the depot for Pacific Greyhound since the company began in 1930. The present building is a 1941 remodel. - The Tower Club on Camellia near Yosemite, now an Eagles Lodge, was constructed in 1926 and was infamous as a prohibition era speakeasy. - 101 Magnolia, was the boyhood home of Richard Bare, Hollywood director (Maverick, Twilight Zone, Cheyenne. The house was built in 1917; George Hilburn designed an expansion in 1928 when it was a model home showcasing modern design and appliances. - The former World Savings Building, 10th and I, was designed by Mortensen and Hollstien and opened in 1965. It’s one of the best modernist buildings in the area. - The McClure House was built by Confederate Civil War veteran Bailey Peyton Hogin in the 1880s. One of few 19th century buildings left in Modesto. - The KTRB building on Norwegian be-

came the home of the radio station in 1942. KTRB championed the music of the Maddox Brothers and Rose from this station and featured legendary DJ and musician Chester Smith. - The Lion Bridge was opened in 1916 and designed by John B. Leonard, the forward thinking engineer that advocated for the use of reinforced concrete. - The sunken garden at the old city hall building at H and 11th - The former Elk’s Lodge at 13th and I was built in 1924 and is one of the great build-

ings downtown. - The Victorian house on the corner of Tully and Orangeburg was probably built in the 1890s. - The former Southern Pacific Depot was designed by the Southern Pacific Architecture Bureau and opened in 1915. In the coming weeks, members of Modesto Heritage will research the nominations and select the buildings for Modesto’s first endangered building list. You can still make nominations, send them to modestoartmuseum@yahoo.com

BIG by Chris Murphy and Ruben Porras

Everyone has their special holiday memories. It seems that people love to remember the good ol’ times, those cool retro Christmas songs, the vintage movies and even our friends at Disney, create a holiday scene right out of old Route 66 with Cars Land. We all cry when Chevy Chase is watching old movies in his attic in Christmas Vacation. Well my holiday hipsters, we have our own retro holidays that can be our super spiffy future. As you have been reading here in ModestoView, our Rockin Holiday scene began here in 1937 when Rockabilly music was born. Musicians like Brian Setzer, Deke Dickerson, Big Sandy, Chris Isaak, Reverend Horton Heat, Lee Rocker and our own local musicians like Rockin’ Rick, Tony T and Tess Boyd keep our Modesto music history alive. Disney does it. Elvis did it with Blue Christmas now Modesto can do it. It is time Modesto USA to be the home of Rockin’ Rockabilly Holidays. We take you back to the cool 50s of 10th St and create something that is our own. Yes indeed friends we introduce you to our very own Rockin Santa, his Rockabilly pin up “elves” and we celebrate our new back to the future Rockin Holidays at Hero’s. You will meet Rockin Santa, his elves, and take a look at the new Rockin North Pole and you will be treated to a Hi Ho Rockin’ Silver records holiday musical treat, with enough big slappin bass and holiday cheer for everyone. Not only that, it will snow at the Rockin’ Holiday Big Show December 22. You have to go to find out. So much more Rockin Holidays mean so much more than Rockin Santa and the Holiday show. It is about a time when we shopped local, sang Christmas Carols and baked holiday treats. It was a time when we watched out for each other. It is a time when we shared our holiday cheer with our friends, and we really felt that spirit of community. This season is a time for giving and thinking of others. When we give, we are giving ourselves. Here in ModestoUSA, we give the work of our local artists, our local musicians, the food of our local restaurants and the support our local shopkeepers, craftspeople and service people. Rockin’ Holidays is the way to recognize our history, celebrate our local culture, support the small business economy and make Modesto different and unique. This is how we wrap up our Rockabilly history, our American Graffiti History and our desire to be a vibrant city that that small town feeling all together. Modesto’s Christmas Gift Ideas — Dec 2013

Our local shops count on us to support them all year long and especially during the holidays when they go above and beyond to offer special incentives and new inventory all while working longer hours for our convenience. The following gift ideas might help you choose something that you might have otherwise not considered purchasing for someone special.

The Gift of Beauty, Tranquility and Peace

The crew at Intrinsic Elements at 1214 J Street is all about helping you find gifts that are more than just gifts. Buy an inspirational or motivational book or CD, bath products that offer relaxation, jewelry that will remind your gift recipient of you all year long or maybe a beautiful wind chime that will make windy days more enjoyable. Intrinsic also stocks a number of handmade gifts so you can get even more personal. The downtown area is a fun place to walk around in search of fun boutiques and antique stores that are owned by locals. Give them a shot before you head to the mall.

Color a Life

Modesto has a number of art galleries and many of them are featured during the Art Walk on the third Thursday of every month. As a gift, take someone special out to enjoy an evening of art. Show them around a bit and maybe let them choose something special to take home. Chartreuse Muse on 10τη Street is a beautiful place to start and they will give you a map to other stops along the way. Check out Mistlin Gallery, Crow Trading Co, Barkin’ Dog Grill and others. Many offer snacks and drinks as you make your way around. Details: modestoartwalk.com

The Gift of Music

Take a look at our event calendar at modestoview.com and you will find a number of local music shows listed. Give tickets to these shows as gifts or while you are at a show, buy CDs or other merchandise to give as gifts. Local acts don’t get the exposure of acts that get radio play. It is up to us as fans to share folks such as Big Earl Matthews, Josh Rosenblum, The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit, Francesca Bavaro and more with the people that we know and love. The gift of music is an everlasting gist that never goes away.

Feed the World

Give Someone an Adventure

Not enough people realize that downtown Modesto is the home of a store that specializes in adventure gear. Located next to Camp 4 Wine on 10τη and Needham, Jaunt Adventure Gear sells all sorts of items that you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else in the 209. Buying gifts here might just change the way that someone lives in away. For instance, give a pair of hightech, lightweight snowshoes to someone and they just might head to the snow for the first time in years. Give a GoPro camera and you might just inspire the next George Lucas. Add a one-year pass to Yosemite to your gift for just $40. That’s a real deal. Details: nps. gov/yose/planyourvisit/feesandreservations

Like local musicians, local eateries don’t get the massive exposure of national chains. Stop by your favorite local restaurant and pick up gift cards to give as gifts. Once your friends and family members realize that Modesto has so many tasty options, they might never walk into a chain restaurant again. Local restaurants often have the reputation of being expensive, but that is rarely the case. Many offer great prices that beat or match their huge rivals. For instance, Fish and Chips at a national chain might cost you $10-$14 and for that you might end up with thin filets of fish, greasy batter and manufactured sauces. Give Firkin’ and Fox or P Wexford’s that same amount of money, order a pint of Guinness and prepare to get full on fresh eats made with local ingredients by people that you know.

AUTHOR “White Christmas” November 22, 2013

I

n the movie, The Bishop’s Wife, there is a scene between the Professor and Julia inside Maggenti’s flower shop. The Professor becomes wistful and says, “I like to have a Christmas tree because it reminds me of my childhood. I find, for some good reason, that this is a good time of year for looking backward. Can you imagine me ever having been a child?” My mother was so much the child at Christmas that she had two trees. A living green tree in the family room and an artificial, 1960s silver Alcoa in the living room. Each year, when Christmas was over, she would ask my dad to plant the green tree outside the family room window so she could continue to enjoy it until it turned dead brown. Like most families, our Christmases were a collection of rituals. It always began with stringing the large, multi-colored bulbs around the house exterior. It wasn’t engineer precise, but it was festive. And staking out a flat plastic Santa in his sleigh and eight tiny reindeer on the front lawn. Then the Alcoa landed and the green tree was purchased and installed and covered with old and new ornaments, one of which featured the smiling face of country singer Slim Whitman. But, that’s another story. These ceremonies would be followed by the baking of peanut butter, chocolate chip cookies and the making of my dad’s classic fudge. Mom would purchase her favorite fruit-filled and ribboned hard candy that always ravaged someone’s tooth. We’d write our letters to Santa, mark the gifts we wanted in the Sears and Penny’s catalogues, and visit the basement of the downtown Sears store, which was transformed each year into Santa’s Toyland. My youngest little sister, Cindy – AKA Sammy – remembered that the Sears & Roebuck “Wish Book” always arrived in brown paper. She would use a Bic pen to circle and circle the things she wanted until the circle was imprinted on the pages below. It really didn’t matter how many times she circled her wishes because Mom bought us pretty much everything we asked for. Her childhood Christmases had been pretty bleak and she wanted to make sure ours weren’t. And then the Santa games would begin. As the oldest, I became the first non-believer. My next oldest brother, Tommy, and I would start looking for the gifts our parents had squirreled away. In closets, in drawers, under beds, in the garage. And we’d try not to leak the deflating truth to our younger sibs. They religiously continued to put out milk and cookies for Santa and Santa always ate them. On Christmas morning, for some strange reason, Dad just couldn’t eat another cookie. Sammy remembers Mike Cannizzaro, Tommy’s father-in-law, playing pinochle on Christmas Eve with our folks and threatening to start a fire. Sammy was on the verge of realizing that Santa was a myth, but she still made sure there was no fire that night before she went to bed to dream of sugar plums. Inevitably, my father would have to assemble something each year. The directions were horrible, usually written by someone in Taiwan, Hong Kong, or the Philippines, and the toddy for the body didn’t help. From bicycles to cardboard kitchens, he put them all together on countless Christmas Eves. As I got older, I helped. And I passed the responsibility down to Tommy and then to my next youngest brother, Wendy. One Christmas, I remember rousting Tommy, who was 15 months younger than me, out of bed, scurrying down the hallway, and peeking through the hallway door into the kitchen where my dad was busy wrapping gifts on the gray Formica table. I recall with a smile the year he tried to wrap our football helmets. My oldest little sister Debbie still remembers the breathless anticipation we all experienced when Mom made us all wait in our rooms, so the parents could get their coffee, pry their eyes open, have a cigarette, and make sure everything was perfectly set up before we could burst into the wonderland of

by Ken White gifts. Only to be blinded by four, white-hot lights. One holiday, my father had bought an 8MM camera with a light bar to capture the festivities. The lights were so bright, every movie featured people squinting in pain, their hands thrown up to cover their faces. His footage was pretty much the same each year. Up the tree and down the tree. Then shots of presents piled under both trees. And close-ups of sleeping animals and dozing humans. One year, somehow, my father double-exposed the film. He must have forgotten that he had already recorded Christmas when he shot the family vacation to SeaWorld. When the film was developed, it featured dolphins dancing through the Alcoa. For my family, Christmas was all about the music. And still is. I can never get enough of Bing singing “White Christmas,” Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” or “Run Rudolph Run” by Keith Richards, or “Mary, Did You Know?” by Kenny Rogers. It was the quickest way to get into the spirit. And the movies. Holiday Inn, White Christmas, The Bishop’s Wife, A Christmas Carol, and It’s a Wonderful Life. And, over the years, like the music, more classics were added. The Nutcracker, twenty-four hours of A Christmas Story, a Muppet Christmas Carol, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, thirtysomething Christmas, Scrooged, Love Actually, and The Family Stone. Then there were the gifts. The wonderful, every-kid-had-to-have-one presents, like the testosterone-fueled, hand-to-hand combat of the Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots; the eloquent, loquacious Chatty Cathy; or the very cool, just-like-the-movies 007 gadgets. There was athletic gear, like the full football uniforms we three boys got which, Wendy always reminded me, let Tommy and me whomp on him without getting into trouble. And my sisters’ vanity sets, which were full-sized, hard plastic make-up tables with flip-up mirrors, little side drawers, and fake make-up. There were gifts that changed everything, like the year Wendy got his first guitar and amp. A Sears Silvertone. And who can ever forget the bright shiny spokes of brand new bikes flashing in the winter’s sun. Once all the presents were distributed, Sammy and Wendy would then stage their annual who-gets-to-openthe-last-present contest, with both of them tucking away at least one present to be “discovered” after everyone had opened their last gift. And what would Christmas be without the food. Turkey stuffed with oyster dressing ground up in an old hand-cranked meat grinder. Dips that made our mouths water. Clam, onion, bacon. Crackers, chips, pretzels. A salt overdose. Egg Nog, hot chocolate with marshmallows, Tom and Jerries. A sugar overload. And the rest of the traditions. Mike Cannizzaro coming to the house dressed like Santa Claus and stealing presents from under our tree. Debbie making cowboy jackets and shirts for us older boys and my best friend, George, who had his own routine of making sugarcovered walnuts, which always seemed to have a shell or two left intact because he’d had a few too many Buds while making them. Singing Christmas Carols in our neighborhood and with our step-mom Jo’s family after Mom passed away. Searching out creative stocking-stuffers for my wife Robin, my step-sons, and her family. Each year, we added more rituals. The Nutcracker Suite ballet at the San Francisco Opera House, La Pastorela at El Teatro Campesino in San Juan Bautista, Christmas in the Adobes in Monterey, the Modesto Symphony’s Candlelight Concerts, the gift exchange at Tommy’s house, cruising Christmas Tree Lane, decorating sugar cookies for Robin’s cookie exchange, holiday open houses, and the Christmas parades in Twain Harte and Modesto. They say Christmas is for kids. At this time of year, I often wish I were a kid again.

childhood, when we took our first steps, and it will remain a challenge throughout our adult life. We need it to bicycle, to climb a tree, to do sports and physical activities. We also need emotional balance, because being too anxious, too angry or too impatient, too relaxed, too sad or too happy create problems. We need balance in everything we do. As a T’ai Chi instructor and practitioner I feel that balance is a cornerstone of this art. For example, balancing on one leg as you move and step slowly from one direction to another. It requires focus and strength. “I want to improve my balance!” I’ve heard this request from a lot of our older students in their 70’s. Wanting to improve one’s balance is smart, because the lack of it can cause crippling falls and break bones which are harder to heal as we get older.

Balance is not something you can get under your belt quickly. It requires patience, which many people don’t have. Here’s a list of what goes into having good balance : 1. Good posture, refraining from overextending 2. Correct focusing of the eyes 3. Shifting weight correctly 4. Even speed 5. Being in the present moment 6. Relaxing, slowing down the mind. That’s a lot! But Rome wasn’t built in a day. This is certainly true for good balance. It takes time, a commitment to yourself and regular attendance in an exercise program. Good balance gives you a great feeling, no matter your age. Exploring all the many aspects of balance and finally conquering it really is fun. Once you have good balance in your life it gives you the confidence you always wanted. For more info : taichi4modesto.com or call (209) 572-4518

BUSINESS Crow Trading Co. Editor’s Note: This is a conversation with Skip and Jennifer Williams of Crow Trading Co. If you are looking for unique antique or vintage home decor or a special gift visit them at 1208 J St in Modesto. They can be found online at crowtrading.com. Q: First, thank you for taking the time to work with us on this feature. I know quite a few people interested in your story just based on the few items that I have in my home from your store. Let’s start with the basics – Please introduce yourselves and briefly explain your history with antiques and your history in Modesto. Hi Ruben. Thanks so much for talking with us. We are Skip and Jennifer Williams. We’ve been in our current J Street location for over nine years, but we originally opened Crow Trading Co over on I Street way back in 1996. Skip’s been in Modesto his whole life and started with collecting

by Ruben J. Porras and selling Native American Indian items back when he was just nine years old. (Skip is part Crow Indian, thus the business name) Jennifer found her way to Modesto via Angels Camp in 1986, married Skip in 1990. And the rest is history, well history in the making. Skip’s 84 year old mother Helen also helps out in the store a few days a week. We’re all family run. Q: What keeps you excited and interested in what you do? What keeps you wanting to unlock the shop every day? We truly love making people happy. When someone finds a piece of furniture, accent piece for their home or just the right gift, it’s wonderful. We love when a customer tells us that a friend saw a piece of furniture in their home from our store and told them ‘I’ve never seen anything like this before, but I love it and it’s perfect in your home’. That makes our day!

Q: I’m sure that you have come across some very interesting items over the years. Is there one piece in particular that you have been really excited about? We got a super camel saddle blanket; it’s real, used on camel and is really pretty. And a trophy for winning a bicycle race in San Jose in 1895. Q: I notice a focus on Asian art and furniture in your store and I understand that you just returned from a trip to China. Was that trip personal or for business? Yes, we were lucky enough to go on a trip to Beijing a few weeks ago. We had a great time buying for the store, as well as some sightseeing and fun with friends. We were able to visit and buy from workshops where antique furniture is refurbished. Most of these pieces are 50-120 years old and are literally hauled from the countryside and cleaned up, repaired and made ready for our homes. We’ll be putting together a look-book from the trip in the weeks ahead that will show the workshops and the furniture. It’s hard to explain how primitive some of these places are, and how the fur-

niture that was used for years is rustic yet beautiful when they are done with it. While at the workshop we were cooked an unbelievably good meal from a very primitive country kitchen. The hospitality was amazing. Jennifer took some really great photos of the Great Wall of China that highlight the unique graffiti that has been carved into the bricks of the wall over the years. We have the photos for sale in the store. Read more of this interview and see more photos at modestoview.com

BLUES & JAZZ 24 Shopping Days ‘til Christmas Well

only 24 shopping days till Christmas! Have I started shopping yet? Well no, not yet. I am one of those that enjoys that stress of being in the mall when hearing the “mall will be closing in 10 minutes… please make your purchases and go home to your families.” That’s when I break into a sprint and rastle with someone over the last Xbox on the shelf. As you can see I’m getting into the spirit. December should provide us with time to reflect on the year and the reason for the season so here’s hoping you can get out and enjoy some of the magic holiday moments in the downtown as well as those at home, home fires burning. The downtown with music, restaurants and the Art Walk scene continued unabated year round so get out your mulled wine and come down. On the Christmas front there’s plenty to do and see. Locally Dickens’ Faire with music and vendors on the street Dec 7th in front of the McHenry Mansion all day, Handel’s Messiah sing-along 12/15 church of the 49th, Columbia. But this month is special, I want to invite all those who over the years came out for Blue Monday Jam at Timeless Cuisine, Clayton’s, or Jax on H street to a Blue Monday Christmas Party Monday December 9th at the Barkin’ Dog Grill. The Jam has been down a few years since Jax Restaurant closed but will bring back the Johnny Valdez & Straight Ahead band to host the Jam. So if you came out over the 364 Mondays we did the Jam over 7 years please come down for the Christmas show. The State Theatre, home of the MAMA awards continues with some community friendly booking: with film the Polar Express 12/1, and A Christmas Story 12/3, and It’s a wonderful Life on 12/8. And the Slam continues with the Ill List Poetry Slam 12/7 for live in your face comedy improve. The Gallo this season with booking: John Tesh 12/2 for a big Band Christmas show,

And of the new venues on the scene is Rivets restaurant and bar. Some of the seasoned acts that play at Boardroom, Johnny & Kelly, Tim Allen, Joe Barretta are playing there weekend nights. The food & drink is good moderately priced but there is no cover charge. Another place for a quiet listen to music in ambient environment is DEWZ Restaurant’s Wine Bar colander for the month. An Interesting Ride

The Ladybug In Winter

by Tru Luv Lopez

by Aaron Rowan

2013 has been an interesting ride. This year we covered on many topics and interviews. We touched on subjects such as distributing your music online and your options. I had the opportunity to revisit a band gaining national attention, “Los Reales del Norte”. Interviewed with DJ Luis Dominguez, one of many influential personalities from the central valley. We had one on one interviews with rappers such as Cobalt and 2LE. We spoke on representation in the music industries the do’s and

don’ts and offered advice on when the best time to release your music to the masses. Promoters such as Reg Evens get up close with and personal. One of our Urban highlights was a behind the scene look at an XFest talent competition and our interview with Mr. Latino which may seam kind of odd an magazine writing about another magazine. All these topics in one year, which inspires and motivate the masses. My thanks to the continued efforts by all those who contribute to the local music scene. For the first time I am offering the public a chance to message me questions or request topics you would like the UrbanView to cover regarding the local music scene. The

Durango Songwriters Expo, held twice annually - southern California in February/March, and Boulder, Colorado in October - selects 200 songwriters out of thousands of applicants for each event. Patty Castillo Davis was among those chosen for the October 2013 installment. These songwriters are given intensive mentorship with top music industry professionals, many based in Nashville, where Patty’s music had already begun to gain a foothold. Her original song ‘Ladybug’ had captured the attention of a few people working music row, including music publisher Jennifer Johnson, president of The Song Factory. In fact, one of Patty’s more recent compositions, ‘Stay With Me’, was written as an assignment from Jennifer to craft a country song meant for a male vocalist. And so, in the first week of October, Patty found herself walking in the wintry wonderland of Boulder. Her main musical mentor during the Expo was Anthony Smith, who has written songs for the heavy hitters of modern country - George Strait, Tim McGraw and Trace Adkins, to name a few. The judges in the songwriting competition were impressed by a number of Patty’s tunes. ‘Ladybug’ was a hit with all of the genre-specific panels, even the pop category. ‘History And Love’, one of Patty’s newer works (and one of the first to have been recorded to CD - featured on the recent ‘My Friends And I’ compilation album showcasing several Modesto-area songwriters), was called radio-worthy by a panel of judges. Like ‘Ladybug’, it appealed to judges in various genres, but fared the best in the Americana category. Patty returned home to us with (what else?) a song in her heart, but also a new mission inspired by her experience in the Colorado Rockies. Among her goals for the near future are to see a women’s songwriting festival established in Modesto, and to work with organizations like Modesto Sound to mentor young student songwriters. She is a woman full of vision for the local arts

scene, so be on the lookout for many great projects from her in the year to come. Patty and myself will be two of the judges of the songwriting contest we are adding to next year’s Modesto Unplugged Music Festival. More about this next month, but in the meantime you can email me at crashdog3@yahoo.com for more info. Deadline for entry is February 1. Patty and I will also be co-hosting a special event on Saturday December 28. We’re calling it ‘Elegy’, and it is a tribute to the musicians who have left this life in 2013. Any and all local players are invited to cover 1-2 songs by any such musician/band. Already slated to perform are singer-songwriters such as Rob Hill, Andrew Alvarez, Chris Ward, and of course Patty herself; giving renditions of songs by departed greats of the past year ranging from George Jones to Patti Paige to Lou Reed. This will be held at Peer Recovery Art Project, 1222 J St., at 6 PM. Anyone interested in performing a tune or two may email me to secure a spot and song selections. We hope to see you there!

FIT Zumbalicious by Efren Martinez I

met Andrea Zahra a few years back at a Fun Sports bike charity ride. I was very impressed by the lady, after all she’s married to my good friend Brian who’s a fellow cyclist enthusiast. That being said, I wasn’t really sure what she did for a living; well outside of being a super mom and great wife to my buddy. One day while I was getting my swim laps in at the club, I noticed her come out of a fitness class and I asked her if she had just taken a class? Her reply was, no I just finished instructing one, Zumba! So there she was, all of that and a Zumba instructor too. Sure, Zumba it’s a form of fitness that’s geared more for women right? Clearly I was wrong, Andrea shared with me that Zumba not is not only popular with ladies, but she also has a popular fallowing with the men. Men? Apparently Andrea gave a perspective that I wasn’t ready for. She informed me that Zumba will not only give you a great workout, but it can also help you gain some cool dance moves. According to her, women love a man who can dance!

WOW Move over Magic Mike, here comes Efren. Andrea’s been a Zumba instructor for a little over a year and has come a long way since she took her first Zumba class with her twin sister. Back then, she was a bit nervous and like many of us, she hung out in that back row of the fitness class. Andrea shared with me that she loves to dance and it didn’t take her to long to learn the routines and instantly fell in love with Zumba. It fact, she credits those lost 10lbs that’s she always had trouble losing to Zumba. I asked her, what’s the best part about being a Zumba instructor? Her happy reply, “It’s the weight loss stories.” She also enjoys seeing so many in her class having fun and making new friends. What really makes her dance a jig is when people tell her they had to buy smaller fit-

ting clothes because of Zumba. Hold up! Let me take 2 steps back, at this point I’m forgetting the kids/family aspect of it. Like all parents, she wants her kids to be healthy and have a positive self image of themselves. In fact, even before she was a Zumba instructor her family lived a very active lifestyle that includes riding their bikes, dancing, gymnastics, and taking a family walks. Now that’s Zumbalicious. If you would like to find out more about Zumba, check with your fitness center. Andrea teaches Zumba at The Brenda Athletic Club in Modesto. Class times are Wednesdays at 9:00am and a Kids Dance class on Wednesdays at 4:15pm. Andrea’s Modesto View Fitness Message. Life gets really busy with work, kids, school, etc. Many times we are too tired to squeeze in time to go to the gym. Whether it’s, taking your dog on a walk, playing soccer with the kids, or turning on some music and dancing with the broom while you clean your house, get moving! Make that time for yourself because you deserve it! You will feel great after you have worked up a good sweat!! If you have not tried Zumba yet, do it! Every gym offers a Zumba class,

check the schedule and make time to attend. There are even Zumba video games and DVD’s available. Fitness Tip Studies have shown that when athletes consume carbohydrate and protein soon after completing a workout, their muscles are repaired and refueled faster, and they perform better in their next workout. ALL AGES

BLUES

by Leia Johnson Modesto is filled with excitement for the holidays! I absolutely love the way that the shopping centers and houses are decorated for Christmas! In the spirit of “The Twelve Days of Christmas”, I have decided to list my top twelve things to do during this time of year! 12. I love to watch my favorite Christmas movies with my family. Our tradition is to watch It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, Charlie Brown, Miracle on 34th Street, and Elf! 11. Grab a sled, some warm clothes, and your friends and head up to the snow! 10. Decorate the house festively! 9. Go Ice Skating and sledding at Del ‘Osso farms 8. Snowflake, snowman, green and red holiday cookies! 7. Go support Modesto’s aspiring ballet dancers at The Nutcracker performance. 6. There are tons of Breakfast with Santa’s all around! 5. Go visit Santa in McHenry Village and on the weekends you can even go on a sleigh ride! 4. Walk or drive Christmas tree lane and look at all the cool houses! 3. Support local choirs, or-

by ‘Big’ Earl Matthews

Leia (r) and her sister Sofia chestras, and bands doing Christmas performances. 2. Find places that you can donate your old clothes and toys to 1. Spend time with your family, watch movies, play games and enjoy your time together! A couple years back a close family and ours would go to dinner and exchange gifts as a tradition. We decided that we wanted to spend time together, but give back to the community. We now go to the Velvet Creamery then go to the Soroptimist Tree in the mall. This is a place where you can “adopt” a child for Christmas. We buy presents, clothes, and special things that were on their wish list. Then give the gifts back to the station and the Soroptimist Organization will give the gifts to those children on Christmas. It’s so nice to know that you made someone’s Christmas better. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday!

December Nights

Hello

everyone, I hope you have had a good year, I know I did. Family, friends and music all make for a full heart and a happy “Big E.” Well, it’s December and that means tons of events big and small, holiday parties and family get togethers. I am kind of taking it easy this month as far as live performances go so that I can focus on getting ready for a huge 2014 but that doesn’t mean there isn’t lots of great stuff to do throughout the month. First, on December 7th at Congregation Beth Shalom in Modesto (best known for their CBS Sunday Afternoon Concert series) is their annual fundraiser called Latkes & Vodkas. My band, Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame have been honored to play at this event for the last few years and now it is time to change things up and bring in some new blood. This years event will feature John Clifton from the MoFo Party Band (the only Fresno band to ever win a MAMA Award) and his drummer Brian Bischel, along with Randall Niemann and Eli Lester from BEatCS. I already have my tickets. I look forward to seeing some of the best blues players in the valley on stage together for the first time. If you are looking for a reason to dress up and go out dancing this holiday season look no further.

On December 13th Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame will be in Merced at the Partisan for a night of blues, music and dancing. This will be our 3rd time playing at the Partisan and I know its going to be a ton of fun. On December 14th I am honored to be sitting in for a song or two with one of the funnest bands in Modesto, The Wrong Doers. They are hosting the Prospect Theatre Project’s Last Waltz event. This is the final music event that will be held at the theatre’s Scenic Drive location before their big move to their new downtown location on K Street. There will be many other guest performers throughout the night and as I said, this is your last chance to spend a little time in a great room filled with a lot of love and many friendly faces. One little note about last month- the Poorhouse Millionaires and Ryan Russell and Friends went out on the road for the first time to Phoenix and Tempe, AZ. We had a great time and met some great folks. I for one was overwhelmed by the love and support we received from the ModestoView and from many of our friends and family. It has filled my heart to know how much you all care and I want you to know that I am forever in your debt. Special thanks to Felicia Aleman, Chris Murphy, Tara Madigan, Schuyler Grace, Jeremy Marcanti and Red Chair Recordings. The list could go on but, you get the idea. We look forward to hitting the road again soon. Happy New Year everybody- 2014 better look out ‘cuz here we come!

Light Up a Life Holiday Tree December 6 at 6pm at Memorial Medical Center, Coffee and Briggsmore Come celebrate the 28th annual Light Up a Life Holiday Tree lighting to honor, celebrate and remember loved ones.
