EDITOR’S Greetings Happy Valentine’s Day to my love Becky and my wonderful girls Abbey and Madison. You are the best.

Love is in the air. It seems like February is the real start of the new year. January is so hectic and just blows by so fast and in February things start to settle in. Here at ModestoView, we are powering up to make sure that ModestoUSA is loaded with positive events and news. That is our mission since we started this back in 1997. Love means supporting our family and friends. Our awesome readers and our ViewCrew all feel like family and friends as we all share our collective experiences. ModestoView has become the #1 monthly magazine and media group in our area. We are so very excited about our growth and it has been a lot of hard work. No one connects the community like we do. We are home delivering, connecting people on facebook, via twitter and Instagram and we have really been firing up the jets so that well over over 150,000 people each month in our region know the good things that are happening and can find the best businesses. It is all about love really. We love our community and we love doing business with friends and we all want our friends to succeed. That is why ModestoView is here, to support the good things and our friends and families. We were so very honored to be nominated for the Small Business of the Year award by the Modesto Chamber of Commerce. Thank you. This month, we welcome a new member to the ViewCrew, the MAMA Award winning Middagh Goodwin who will share his music promotions skills and MAMA winning outlook for our music scene. We are so excited to have the award winning Rob Ely and his wife Stephanie on our Love Me Tender cover. This is so fun. Living here should be exciting. Live music, amazing food, public art, creative cocktails, classic Graffiti, charity events, picnics in the park, food festivals, Sloshball, bike rides, trail runs, cruise legends, song and dance, pubcrawls, fabulous restaurants, successful students, high school and youth sports are all just a sampling of the things you will read about in ModestoView. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I don’t know if you feel the same way, but the conversation at my house is not “what is there to do?” but rather “what can’t we do because there are so many things?”. You, our readers are why this is happening. You make things happen! You love Modesto. You love making a difference and changing the way the world looks at Modesto. It is really up to us. Each and everyone of us are our own cheerleader. We are all Mr. Miss, Mrs., Ms. Modesto. ModestoView readers and advertisers are a special kind of people and thanks to you, I am excited for our future. Living here is special to and your excitement is contagious and it keeps us going month after month to make each issue better, more fun and interesting. Take time this month to tell us what you like and love so we can continually improve ModestoView each month. My email is below.

I’ll let you know right out of the gate here that I’m typing this month’s column on my iPad. I mention this because I am experimenting here and things may get funky. I have a keyboard connected to the thing and I’m using a stylus as a mouse. Let’s get more visual - Imagine a confused goofy writer stabbing at a delicate piece of computer equipment with a stick. It’s as ugly as it sounds. How many of you are in love? I ask of course because February has arrived and the economy is counting on us to spend billions of dollars on candy, flowers, cards and figurines of a fat guy in a diaper aiming a bow and arrow. Those things are supposed to convince the one we love that our love is true. I don’t get it. If my girlfriend wants to prove her love I’d like to receive a gift that I really love and not something mass-produced. I may leave a note on her makeup mirror soon. It will read simply, “Love me forever, love me true - Buy me a plate of taco truck tacos that I can share with you!” If you are madly in love and looking for a way to show it, let us help. Flip through this issue and find our Valentine’s Day contest. You can score a gourmet dinner, hotel room, flowers, candy and gifts to help make your special night even more special. You’ll need to get creative to win. We are looking for the most interesting proclamation of love. Tell us how much you love your lover or tell us a story of how you showed it once. Maybe start with something like, “This one one time while we were deer hunting near a camp where we were trying to learn basket weaving...” You get the idea. You are about to look like a romantic hero! February in Modesto should be a lot of fun. The Moonshine Bandits will be at Fat Cat closer to the end of the month to debut their new album, The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit will take the stage at the Gallo Center to support Camp Jack Hazard, a Santana tribute band will rock the State Theatre and really big dudes in really tight pants will fight to win the NFL’s top prize at the Super Bowl.

Photos this month were taken during a road trip to Yosemite to celebrate the new year. What a pretty place in the world! While you are doing what you do the ViewCrew will be doing everything we can to keep you informed. We are experimenting with social networks such as Vine and Tumblr to figure out how they can benefit our efforts and we will be practicing our video editing skills as well. This summer in Modesto will be wild and busy and we want to be ready. Have a good month. Don’t eat too much

candy. Find sweetness in the heart of your one true love, buy little kids something special to make them feel loved, listen to great music and slow dance in the street (watch for cars) for no apparent reason. Connect with me at facebook.com/ rporraswriter or on Twitter at twitter. com/rubenwriter. Email me anytime at r.porras@me.com with story ideas or love letters or invites to exotic locations.

ART Sharpie and Napkin in Hand by Jim Christiansen

Chris Murphy and Jim at January Art Walk – photo Jen K Johnson

Last month I spent Art Walk with Jennifer

and Modesto View’s Chris Murphy, starting at Crow Trading viewing Julie Hawk and Joshua Danner’s great collaborative collages. At the door, I ran into artist Nadine Barrett showing at Designz on 15th, with a sample of carrot cake from a gallery down the way. Chris got himself some Chinese Food Boxes from Crow Trading, perfect to store his 45 records, and only a slight delay from our trek to Concetta for Campari Spritzes. There, we hooked up with photographer George Osner. Moving on to Barkin’ Dog, we enjoyed the Art Walk edition of Dave Dow’s regular Thursday Jam, and helped Debbie Fredrickson add a sold sign to her son in laws photos on display at BDG. Chris is one of the artists in the back hallway sketch gallery, and we hope to add another set soon, when I bring the shared sketch paper and sharpies. Many of you readers know I draw sketches of the bars, music events, musicians and friends around town. That started back at the Barn Coffee House in Riverside, but really kicked into high gear when I started hanging out in the bistros and venues in Modesto. The frogs I drew in my UC Riverside comic strip, perfectly adaptable to Tree Frog Tavern. Other characters populated bar napkins at Tiki, The Vintage, Bookey’s, Mallard’s, and even the Satin Dolls topless club out on Kiernan. In December, some of my friends who

owned or were in pieces of my art, passed on. Janice, who I drew on napkins at the Vintage; Wendell White, who played in bands I sketched all over the place and at Tees to Please printed some of my designs; and Peter Mah of Minnies. Pete posted my napkins, and later my first permanent art show collection anywhere in Modesto, in the upstairs bar alongside the collectible art of Stockton born artist Burke Tyree. I miss them all, and just note they all had an influence on my art produced here in Modesto. Talking over a cocktail with sharpie and napkin in hand, watching the band as they played, and sharing the finished drawings with bar owner after the sets were done at last call. Cheers to all. If nothing else survives of my art when I’m gone, the recording of these fun times around town would be worthy. A new collector of my concert sketch art in Austria, is singer/songwriter/storyteller, Christene LaDoux, who was visiting her MAMA Award roots with family in an acoustic set in the Allsup’s back yard where she was drawn in action around the fire. While she might be considering it for a cd cover, Jamie Dubberly announced that my “Jazz Squared” oil painting is going to be the cover of Orquestra Dharma’s new album, “La Clave de la Gumbo”. I’m also a kickstarter backer for that project and you should check it out too. I added the new Mark Holden “Lizards and Frogs” coloring book to my collection at last month’s Acoustic Rock Society Art and Music event . Mark has more copies for sale. In other news, Monica Gunderson

You can find more of Randy’s work at Chartreuse Muse Purchase Award Winners for Stanislaus Artist Open studio are: Jack Morris, oil on wood panel- “Muse Lot” Elizabeth Ingebretsen, unframed watercolor- “Yes, We are happy Cows” Barbara Gill, ink- “Sunflower and Caterpillar.” Lorainne Nilson, photo scan- “Chinese Lanterns” Tom Donalson, mixed media- “Landscape serving tray.” These original pieces of art, were purchased by the Open Studio steering committee, and will be given away by drawing during April’s Stanislaus Artists Open Studio Tour.

Maps will go on sale March 1. Map booklets are $10, students 18 and under, free when attending with a map holder. Open Studio weekend is April 12 and 13. Mistlin Gallery reopened January 21 with the new lighter color décor, and the “Art in the Family” show. New class schedules now available with the Central California Art Association, and over at the Chartreuse Muse. Third Thursday Art Walk resumes this month, February 20. BAR All Them Raw Emotions: Valentine’s Day By Kate Serpa at Raw Sushi Bistro

Photos by Philip Johnson

Do

you know what’s disgusting? Valentine’s Day happens to be my favorite holiday. I can’t make a sandwich to save my life, but ask me to sacrifice hours to tweezing individual flecks of glitter into the shape of a heart and I would happily oblige. My card theme last year was old movie monsters, inscribed with such charming nuances as: “Roses are red, violets are blue, be my Valentine or I’ll murder you.” Oh, sweet love! I can, however, understand how Valentine’s Day got its’ bad rap; I work in a restaurant setting that is forced to witness those special individuals who spear-head the cliches of engagement ring-festooned desserts and public butterfly kisses (vomit). It seems as though there was some evil mastermind plan to stick good ol’ V. D. hot on the heels of your failing New Year’s resolutions. Like the calendar gods are trying to kill one with two by giving your ego a sucker-punch to the face by reminding you that -- oh, you’ve just given up your Paleo diet and restarted smoking? Better remind you that you’re also utterly, utterly alone on the day that revolves around dishing out the love. I understand how the hatred got attached; yet, comrades, Valentine’s Day is coming... I know it hurts, but sake bombs will heal that aching heart. So I dragged poor Phil to a number of locations to find ze perfect Valentine’s spot, and the obvious choice and winning suitor was Raw Sushi Bistro! (Cue: Wild applause) Raw is a lovely new addition to the downtown restaurant circuit having been open for only seven months, but they are delivering staying power in my boozy heart. Raw houses, in my humble opinion, the prettiest bar in Modesto. This back-lit and laddered-shelved beauty holds over a hundred bottles, with the majority being devoted to vodka. A healthy variety of sakes and wines are also offered for those of us on the liquid-dinner diet, along with a with a chocolate box assortment of colorful cocktails, Japanese beers, and champagne for you romantic types. I know I’m buzzed, but it might just be love. This sleek family owned restaurant is managed

8

by Alex Phongsavat -- its sister location is in Stockton and managed by Alex’s brother. Alex credits the restaurant’s beautiful interior, terrific bar, and top service for its success, but I think he’s missing the whole bit about the instant love rush I felt when bartender Melissa Quesada brought out my Peach Fuzz martini, hamachi nigiri, and SCS roll (tempura asparagus and spicy tuna). Swoon! Kate + sushi & Peach Fuzz martini = Luv 4ever. So we all know Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday this year, right? And we all know because it’s on a Friday extra effort has to

be put in, right? Well, for those of you who are behind on the count, Phil and I have figured out a pretty fantastic game plan for you. Raw Sushi is a two second walk away from Gallo Center, who is showcasing Modesto Symphony Orchestra’s Classic Series featuring Brahms and Tchaikovsky. Sushi, cocktails, and classical music, people -- if that’s not going to earn you some Valentine’s special time I don’t know what will. Speaking of, I hope you’re all very proud of me for refraining from all of the cheap pun humor I could have spun with this article --

read: ‘Raw’ as an adjective, oysters, fleshy, etc. That’s how much I enjoyed Raw Sushi’s fantastic cocktails, rolls, and atmosphere; it was lovely, and I want to be ensure that I’ll be allowed back. Let us bow our heads and share a moment of silence for the tasteless humor that might have been. By Katie Jones, Marketing and Public Relations Manager, Sixel Consulting Group Sick of driving 100 miles just to get on a plane? Right now, Modesto’s air service is only to San Francisco, and it’s often cheaper to drive to the Bay Area rather than fly. But what if there were another alternative? A major airline is interested in flying nonstop between Modesto and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). But before the airline will commit, it needs to know that the community will actually use the new service. To that end, the City of Modesto and the Modesto City-County Airport have launched DestinationLAX. DestinationLAX is a campaign to collect $1 million in nonbinding pledges from businesses and individuals as proof that the community will support the new route. Los Angeles is the perfect new destination for the region. It’s the most popular city for Modesto business travelers, and LAX is the largest airport on the West Coast. This means that hundreds of destinations across the world are one stop away—no driving required. If enough pledges are collected, the new service to LAX could begin as early as this summer. The service would be so good for the city, but it isn’t a done deal. In order for the airline to start operations, we need a million dollars in pledges. That’s why Sixel Consulting Group, on behalf of Modesto Airport, needs to collect your commitment. The campaign ends February 28, so there isn’t much time. No cash is required upfront, and we’re not asking that you spend more money—simply that you spend your existing travel budget in a new direction. Eliminate drive time, parking costs and fog delays. Commit your travel budget to supporting your local airport. Make a pledge today.

CHEF Mama Mia!!!

by Dana Johnson

FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: See Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month

Kim Humke and Gabby Arguelo

I’m

so breaking out in song right now! When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore! When the world seems to shine like you’ve had too much wine, that’s amore! When I’m dining at Vito’s Ristorante on 13th Street Modesto, that’s amore! Almost 3 years ago Mr. Modesto View, Chris Murphy, said Dana you really should go check out Vito’s, you’ll love the Italian food and the bread is addicting! Chris said I’d really want to do a feature article on this place. Mind you, I was just getting to know Chris at the time and I didn’t know for sure if his palate was as ‘specific’ as mine. After the first bite of the hot bread, the addiction ensued! I remember panning over the impressive wine list as I recognized this was the beginning of a long-term relationship for mi amore of primo Italian dining and trusting Chris’s supreme culinary suggestions from that point on! 3 years later I’m still here! May and Ray Ashak are the dedicated owners of Vito’s Ristorante for a number of years now. They previously lived and worked in the infamous restaurant world of Chicago. The couple has a son Nicholas, age 9 and a new baby boy named Noah. Naturally a family and restaurant keep them busy, but they somehow find time to attend, support, and donate to locate charities like the Modesto Police and Fire Departments, United Cerebral Palsy, and direct food donations to the Salva-

10

tion Army. BIG Thanks!!! When it comes to food I don’t think I’ve ever seen Ray eat the same thing. As for May, she is fabulous shape and doesn’t look like she just had her second baby, probably because she often enjoys the salad favorites on the menu like the avocado shrimp salad and the Waldorf. She did confess she splurges occasionally on the new gluten free flourless chocolate cake from the dessert menu. Young Nicholas, go figure, is a huge fan of the Italian cheese stuffed pork chop with a divine creamy pesto sauce with sides of risotto and sautéed veggies just like ME! Someone is raising this kiddo right! So I recently found out that Vito’s has 8 new menu items, plus 3 new dessert items, new additions to the wine list, and a new executive chef, Sam Gonzalez! Wait! Time out! I’m not sure any changes were necessary as I’ve been perfectly happy with things just the way they are! So Ray looks me straight in the eye and assures me that my old favorites are still on the menu while Chef Sam is a fortunate new addition to Vito’s. So I said, “prove it!” He had me at Rib eye steak salad! Then he proceeds to share about the strawberry chicken salad, ahi tuna salad, chipotle seafood salad, and all gluten free. I’m still trying to listen but I’m really thinking which salad I’ll try first! Ray says get your scaloppini right here, veal, chicken, or pork! It’s on! Then he really throws me a splitter with a new Sicilian pasta penne! Dana~licious thoughts all

May, Ray, Nicholas and Noah Ashak ramped as I want to try it all! So I pretty much did just that! New Year, New Menu, all Happy! I don’t always mention the sous-chef in my articles, but Gabby Argulo is amazing to watch in Vito’s kitchen. She is always smiling and creating dishes with raw passion. That always is carried over for an overall memorable dining experience. But what else I really like about Gabby is that she doesn’t get upset or judge me when I want something special created from within the menu. Go ahead ask for your veggies sautéed in pesto, create your own steak and artichoke custom pizza with Alfredo sauce! Oh yeah, a Dana~licous pizza pie at Vito’s, that’s amore Vito’s uses many local food companies to

thrive and to continue to deliver freshness to our plates. Stanislaus Foods, Sysco Foods, Sciabica’s Olive Oil, Jimenez Meat products, and you will likely see Ray at Cash & Carry almost daily. Vito’s has new Happy Hours! 4-7pm! $5 Appetizers, $5 martinis, $5 margaritas, $3 select drafts, and $5 house wine. Now on the wine list is Silkwood’s Alicate Bouschet a new Dana~licious favorite! Also worthy new additions are Napa Cellars, Mossimo, Clean Slate from Germany, and Michael David Ink Blot Petite Verdot! That’s vino amore! Live music on Tuesdays 6-9pm and happy hour extended til closing! I’m thinking its party time, so have it catered or reserve private parties up to 50 guests during business hours. Though Vito’s is closed Sunday, you can have your very own private party with me, Dana~licious as the guest chef, call Vito’s for details! Saturday afternoons also available for these type special events! Modesto View signature question: Ray, Beatles or Stones? Beatles of course. I’m like, it’s like I don’t know you at all! He said 3 words why; Peace John Lennon. Alright then.

NON-PROFIT Keeping Camp Fires Burning

Jack Hazard’s by Earl Mathews

We are fast approaching the 3rd annual fundraiser for Camp Jack Hazard at the Gallo Center for the Arts. This years event being extra special because it is also the 90th anniversary of CJH itself. Yes, you read right 90 years, its a long time. So many generations of campers turning into counselors and then turning into parents and grandparents. What a legacy to pass on. As many of you know CJH was rescued a couple of years ago by a group of camp alumni who formed a nonprofit called The Jack and Buena Foundation, named after the founders of CJH, Jack and Buena Hazard. Their goal has been to bring CJH back to its full glory and then some. So far it has been a rousing success and with continued community support CJH will live on for another 90 years. The fact that CJH is still going strong after 90 years is a testament to its power to change lives for the better and to create a community of people who know how to stay connected and work together to insure its future. Camp holds a sacred place in my heart as well. I spent two summers and one off season working at a camp. During that time I washed a lot of dishes and made a lot of pancakes, I also climbed my first mountain. It was at camp that I first got a taste for singing in public. So many great memories, I could write a book. This years concert is all local music. We are happy to welcome back from Oakdale California, The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit. TGLTSO is one of the best country bands in the world (my humble opinion) and they are from our own backyard. Their list of accomplishments is huge, from playing their first show at the Fillmore last year to being invited back to Strawberry Music Festival again and again. These guys are one the rise with more great things coming every day. Their 3rd full-length album entitled Old Excuses has received rave reviews and we couldn’t be happier to have them back. The Ryan Russell Band is also on the bill, they are a rocking blues band from Modesto. The Poorhouse Millionaires will be performing songs from the CJH song book. Tickets are available at galloarts.org. Special VIP meet and greet tickets are also available. Call 209-338-2100 for information.

Turning Moonshine Into Gold Imagine

being told that something that you really believe in is simply not viable. You would have to live day after day going about your life and you might be happy but you’d never be completely satisfied. That is what happened to the Moonshine Bandit nearly 10 years ago. At the time the band was approaching record companies with their idea - the idea that they had been working with for over five years to perfect. They had had some local success and had some big moments come up such as being able to open for rap stars, Digital Underground but record labels just didn’t get it. In the mind of record executives country music was promotable and profitable as was hip-hop but combining the two seemed crazy. Simply put, they didn’t see dollar signs. This is the part of the story that you can share with your kids to inspire them to fight for what they believe in-The Moonshine Bandits buckled down and vowed to fight through the rejection. This is not to say that there were not some very tough times to get through. “There was a point when my wife (Nicole) had to break up a fistfight between Bird and I,” said Tex, one part of the band’s two-man front line. “She looked at us and said that we’d already worked too hard to quit and that we had to shape up keeping going.” Tex attributes much of his personal success and the success of the band to Nicole. She has been by his side since they were seniors in high school. Together they have a son, 15 and a daughter, 10. “Nicole understands what I do. She knows about groupies and she knows that I autograph body parts. The key is what I do after nearly every show,” said Tex. “When I get off of stage I call her and let her know what

Editor’s Note: We published a story on the Moonshine Bandits in March of 2012 after interviews that we conducted while they visited Modesto to play a fundraiser. At that time they were starting to really make waves in the music industry. We are following up now because those waves have formed into a tsunami. This article is written based on an interview with Tex.

The Moonshine Bandits latest effort “Cali Country” will be released on Feb. 4. The album is infused with strong whiskey, blue collar sweat, fire and good old-fashioned American pride. Photo courtesy Kerosene Media. is happening in the next few hours and that keeps us connected.” Distance is a big issue with the band. The day after this interview they flew to Nashville, Tennessee to record a video. From there the band will come home for a short time before heading to Wichita, Kansas for a show on Feb 8. After that they will be home to rehearse and play a record release party at Fat Cat on Feb 22. From there their life changes. The band kicks off the biggest tour in their history on Mar 20 in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Country Gone Wild tour will continue on for months and will take them from one end of the US to the other. They will coheadline the tour with another successful hip-hop/country duo known as the LACS. This tour is beneficial to the band in the

way that it will put them in front of thousands of fans that they have never played for that already like their type of music. The most meaningful day for the Bandits in 2014 will come on Feb 4. This is the day that their new Album, Cali Country is released. The tour will support the album and keep the word on the streets and in the stores. Like the tour, the album will put the band in front of an audience that they have never had. For the first time, fans will be able to pick up a Bandits record at their local Walmart store. Their records have been on shelves in retail outlets such as Best Buy and FYE in the past, but the size and power of Walmart is undeniable, especially for a country act in the United States. Unlike some bands, research indicates that the Moonshine Bandits still move hard copies of their albums and not just digital files. A bigger retail presence will likely boost their sales and no-toriety. “The record companies that we are working with say that fifty-percent or so of our fans still want a real CD with artwork,” said Tex. “They want something to throw on the dashboards of their trucks.” Beyond all the hype, endless autographs, honky tonks and fancy tour busses with

A relentless in-your-face attitude has propelled the Moonshine Bandits to a place in the music industry that seemed impossible to achieve at one point. Photo courtesy Kerosene Media.

(L-R) DJ Chopstiqs, Tex and Bird have created a formula for success that is as strong as their own brand of moonshine. Members of their “Shiner Nation” fan base consider the band to be the center of a certain outlaw lifestyle and not just a musical act. Photo courtesy Kerosene Media. their band’s name splashed on them is still a group of three guys doing what they love and staying tight with those around them. Sharing the frontline of the band with Tex is Bird who is a commanding presence with his signa-ture dark shades and roof-reaching mohawk. DJ Chopstiqs keeps the beats alive and keeps the crowds rowdy. He has become so popular that he is now booking solo gigs nationwide. The bottom line here is that the Moonshine Bandits never gave up when they were told to walk away by record companies. They are currently represented and supported by two major record companies and their booking is handled by Nashville icon, Buddy Lee. The band’s merchandise is stilled shipped from Central California and orders are heading to fans around the world. Canadian and Australian fans seem particularly interested. A world tour seems inevitable.

ARCHITECTURE Bike Racks and Movies for Modesto Design District by Bob Barzan Photos by Modesto Art Museum

The Modesto Design District is already home to a few pieces of publicly displayed art and has several bike racks, but not near enough of either. The Modesto Art Museum is planning to increase their number with three artistic bike racks and this is a chance for you to leave your artistic mark in Modesto. The museum invites California artists, architects, engineers, designers, fabricators, and others to design and produce functional art bicycle racks to be located in the Modesto Design District and on the Modesto Historic Graffiti Cruise Route, the area between 10th and 16th and I to K Streets. Rack designs can be inspired by either the cruise route, made famous by George Lucas, or the design district, the museum’s newest city gallery where residents and visitors can experience and en-

joy design of all kinds. Three different racks will be selected and each of the three selected artists/designers will receive a fee of $3000 to cover the costs for design, fabrication, finishing, insurance, and transportation of the completed rack to the installation site. The project is in partnership with the City of Modesto and is funded by a grant from ArtPlace America. Â Deadline for proposals is February 28, 2014. Complete details and entry information is on the museum web site at http:// modestoartmuseum.org/pages/bikerack. htm The 7th annual Modesto International Architecture Festival is seeking entries of short movies (3 to 25 minutes) about architecture, architects, landscape, public art, and urban design. Only one entry per person or organization and the movie must have been completed on or after January 1, 2011. There is no entry fee. Movies can be any genre including narrative, documentary, experimental, or animation. Highest scored movies will be selected for screening at the festival; three cash awards will be given with a Grand Prize of $500. Information: http://modestoartmuseum.org/pages/ movieentries.htm The seventh annual Modesto International Architecture Festival is hosted by the American Institute of Architects Sierra Valley Chapter and the Modesto Art Museum. The festival, September 13-21, 2014, is nine days with dozens of exhibits, tours, talks, workshops, movies, and events. We expect about 5,000 people to participate in real time and space, and more than 25,000 to participate virtually.

ROCKABILLY

Dee-Jay Savage Salvador

by Jennifer Allsup

Spinning tunes that have you “Jumpin, Jivin Away!!! Here is a little history behind those musical tunes of a Dee-Jay. Leon Scott invented and was the first to record sound in 1857with the phonographic. Shortly, thereafter the phonographic cylinder was introduced for play back of sounds recorded by Thomas Edison. Skipping along to the point. A young man 16 years of age from California by the name of Ray Newby started spinning records to college students from a small transmitter in 1909. Where, radio broadcasting became a reality in 1910. Twenty years later is where the word Disc Jockey fell into play with the first Dee-Jay Jimmy Sarile introducing a worldly dance party, spinning his jazz records. In 1947 the Whiskey A Go Go in Paris jumped on the bandwagon of spinning musical beats. Francis Grasso in 1969, started continuous beats the kept the dance floors juvenating with people mixing from one record to another. Here is what brings us today. A young stylish man with a passion of beat matching old school style with the musical influences of “Rockabilly”. Time to chat with Dee-Jay Savage Salvador. MV: What got you started Dee Jaying with the Oldies?? DJ: I’d been an avid listener of Rhythm ‘n’ Blues, Rock n’Roll and Rockabilly for some years but I started Dee Jaying kind of on a whim. I heard of a good deal on a set of turntables’ & I figured “Hey…I could DJ” hahaha. Then I started furiously collecting all the tunes on vinyl I felt would really get people dancing. MV: Passion seems to be the key to any success, what makes you passionate on the genre of “Rockabilly”? DJ: I have the innate quality of wanting to endlessly dig deeper and discover any and all artists and songs I can in all musical genres I’ve ever had an interest in. Natu-

Great pizza and a

rally this is an aspect of my personality well suited to my role as a Dee Jay. Also, there’s just something about that rockin’ beat that puts the rhythm in my feet ! When I hear it I can’t help but get to Boppin’ and there ain’t no stoppin’ ..hahaha ! MV: I know you have played several events in Modesto recently, how did you hook up with the Modesto music scene, living in Visalia? DJ: I’m a Dee Jay of ambition and I don’t limit myself to Visalia or the Central Valley. I’ve been as far out as Burbank to Dee Jay and I have plans to branch out further. The first time I DJ’d in Modesto I contacted John Black about his J Street block party and had a blast spinnin’ tunes for the fine folks of Modesto and I was well received. Rod Piazza’s band was playing that day and one of the members of his band came up and commented about an Ike Turner tune I played, “Man you never hear anybody play stuff like that anymore”! Coming from a veteran of the blues scene I definitely took it as a compliment.

MV: When beat mixing; has there ever been a strange situation with a request from your audiences? Maybe one you couldn’t fulfill and their reaction?? DJ: One night at Audie’s in Fresno this girl asked why I was playing “old people music” and if I had and “Hippity Hop”. She clearly didn’t have the smarts to assess that it was a certain type of “club night” despite being surrounded by guys wearing pompadours and cuffed jeans and girls with Bettie bangs and victory rolls. I was spinnin’ tunes to cater to that demographic. MV: If, someone would like to hire you for an event or house party, what is the best way to contact you? DJ: I can be reached by phone 1-979-4762546 or they can search my FACEBOOK “Savage Salvador”, to message me and add me as a friend, Also” like” my page at wwwfacebook.com/deejaysavagesalvador. P.S. Jenn wishes her husband Mike a Happy Valentine’s Day

BIG Happy Valentine’s

Day

for being such Honey! Thank you om! a great Wife and M

I love you!

M e T e v o L Return to Romance

by Chris Murphy & Ruben Porras

In 1956, Elvis sang, “Love me tender, love me sweet, never let me go.

You have made my life complete, and I love you so”. Love means so many things to so many people. You can say that Valentine’s Day is too commercial, or just a ploy for flowers, but here are ModestoView, we are not that cynical. We believe in love. Whether it be for people, places, things, songs or something you don’t even know about yet, but whomever that you love, February is that time to think about why and how you love. We can all be better at it, we can always show it more and we can always say it more like we mean it. It doesn’t matter who you love and all love is equal and we are free to love anyone we want. The most we can ask is that we are loved back. And in the end, as Elvis sang in 1956 and the Beatles sang in 1970 “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make”. Love is real, love is truth, love is kind and take time today, tomorrow and the next day to show it. It doesn’t cost one penny to say I Love You. It is free to say and you will receive riches in return. Most importantly, don’t forget to say it and don’t forget to believe it.

First Date Ideas-

Valentine’s Day always brings to mind a sense or romance. That’s really the point, right? If you are looking for longterm romance start at the beginning and start slowly. Focusing on money when planning your first date is not the best decision. Focus instead on being you and being unique. He/she doesn’t know you well yet. Show them who you are. Show them who they can expect to enjoy time with in the future. If you are not on a first date, adapt these ideas to fit your relationship. They will all work and show that you really care enough to take the time to plan special time together.

Bowl Them Over

Bowling is casual and can be silly. You don’t need to be a pro. Relax and feel free to mess up a bit. Share a few laughs while you try to play with greasy fingers after a beer or two.

Get Your Groove On

You’ll want to talk a bit on your first date but it doesn’t need to be a chat fest. Take your date to Hero’s Brewhouse for a local music

. . Tender. show. Sit on the second level above the crowd where the sound is lower so you can chat a bit. If all is going well, take your date’s hand and head to the front of the stage for a spontaneous dance.

Take a Trip Around the World Downtown

Sampling local eats from sandwiches to sushi is always a fun way to spend a day.

Enjoy a day of dining downtown. Go from place to place sampling a bit of everything from Italian dishes at Vito’s to Chinese food at Tokyo Express. By the end of your date you will be known to be a bit adventurous and creative.

Become a Tourist

Hit up all the touristy spots in Modesto with a camera. Pose and act afool a bit. If you really want to get crazy wear the gear and invite your date to also. Break out a tropical shirt, straw hat and khaki shorts with long socks and sandals. By the end of the date you’ll have laughed and played and if all goes well, you’ll have a lasting memories in the form of photoThe McHenry Mansion offers free tours graphs to look back on forever. and you’d be surpassed by how many Modestans have never taken one.

Put Your Back Into It

If you and your date are fitness buffs, explore that. Take in an afternoon at the gym or at Stonehenge downtown where you can climb rock walls together. A jog, driving range session or bike ride would also work for this date. Get sweaty while getting to know one another.

Get Wild

Show off your wild side with a spicy night of dancing and a drag show. ClimaX on Seventh Street and the Brave Bull both have Sunday night drag shows and there is no cover charge for either one. Drag shows are gaining popularity because laughter and diversity is always fun and interesting. Don’t forget a handful of dollar bills for the talent!

Manners matter...

Be Polite. Turn your cell phones off at dinner or in a restaurant. Take a

break. Enjoy and focus on your date. They are the reason you are going out. Try on a tie

Get dressed up. You don’t have to be Gucci, you can go thrift store and spiff it up. Fun tie, sharp shoes and maybe some cool retro or punk pants or skirt. Really get it going and learn to tie a bow tie. Show your date you care and think they are special. Linger and take your time

There is no need to rush. Talk, people watch, order a coffee or after dinner drink and enjoy the extra moments of silence. You can still feel even if you are not talking.

It’s time for homemade Valentines with Grace Lieberman and Friends.

AUTHOR “What Are Little Boys Made of?” What are little boys made of, made of?

by Ken White

What are little boys made of? ‘Snaps and snails, and puppy-dogs’ tails; And that’s what little boys are made of. What are little girls made of, made of? What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice, and all that’s nice; And that’s what little girls are made of.

Mother Goose must not have liked boys. Each time I heard that nursery rhyme growing up, I realized it was true in so many ways, but it made me mad at girls. We were nice, too. We just enjoyed playing in the dirt more. On any given day, little boys were also made of greed, envy, sloth, gluttony, wrath, pride, and lust. Pretty much some variation of all the seven deadly sins. We wanted what we wanted and we wanted it now. We wanted what our friends had. We were lazy and would do as little as we possibly could, for as long as we could. We ate and drank anything and everything, any time we could. We got mad and held grudges forever. We believed the whole world revolved around us and were angry when it didn’t. And we craved what we couldn’t have. My brothers and I were close because we rolled out of the womb one-two-three. I came out butt-first, but that’s another story for a different time. Then Timmy. We did everything together, until Willy arrived. When he was old enough, he became the Third Musketeer. Any time you saw one of us, the other two were lurking nearby. We played sports, explored the neighborhood, victimized small creatures, threw rocks, played Monopoly and Chutes and Ladders, ran through mud puddles, dressed up for Halloween, wore hand-me-downs from older cousins, chased bees and butterflies, teased little girls and sisters, watched TV, played with matches, climbed trees, skinned knees, ran with scissors, caught polliwogs, nearly broke our necks on the Slip ‘n Slide, played Cowboys and Indians and War, got brain freeze from ice cream cones, swam at Playland and in the canals, watched Saturday afternoon Westerns,

18

rode horses at Grampa Owl’s, gigged frogs with Dad, protected each other from older cousins and neighborhood bullies, sang songs, danced dances, and ate everything but peas, Brussels sprouts, and scalloped potatoes. We were boys, and boys being boys, we naturally enjoyed the same things. We were inseparable, until someone got sick or hurt. Then you’d think we had lost an arm or leg. We shared everything. Disneyland, Christmas, family vacations, Easter, friends, bedrooms and bathrooms, school, summer, wagons and bicycles, sports, clothes, enemies, pets, chores, colds, heroes, and our hometown. It was a common experience and shared memory that only the three of us would have. Ever. Nobody could take it away. Ever. We were the only ones who could finish each other’s stories and dream each other’s dreams. (This is an excerpt from my novel Getaway Day, which was published this past December. I gave copies to my siblings on Christmas Day. All but my younger brother Wendell, who had missed our family Christmas due to illness. He passed away on January 2nd. I’m sorry he never got a chance to read it so he would know how much I loved my little brother.)

ZEN Perfection

Most people strive for perfection. We want to get the perfect score, find the perfect mate or business partner, the perfect happiness, have perfect children, the perfect job, perfect health, perfect looks, write the perfect article. Meaning to say : We want everything perfect. But is there such a thing? We call a person a perfectionist that has taken the pursuit for perfection to the highest level in all aspects of life. This type of person never wants to make a mistake and must excel at everything. He or she may be working harder and longer hours than other people, but that stubborn striving has a price. How things ought to be and how things really

by Mary Layton are, don’t line up all the time. Life is not perfect. We suffer when we can’t accept it. Perfection taken too far can be stifling and rigid. You can see this in interior decoration, architecture, graphic design and various art forms. The Persian carpet weavers, for example, know this and intentionally incorporate one single mistake into the design of each carpet, which only a trained eye can discover! But it is this little mistake, i.e. an added petal on a flower, that does not only bring more vitality and charm to the carpet but also shows humility. Human beings are not perfect. Only the Creator is. We can certainly try to be and do the best we can. Striving for perfection is a journey, an often humbling endeavor that keeps us busy evolving and entertained for a lifetime. BLUES & JAZZ Blue Monday’s back in town. by Eric Benson Well it’s official, drought! It harks back to the 70’s when in our communal household we used to use the run off from showers to water our veggies out back. And remember that slogan that hung on many bathroom walls “if it’s yellow let it mellow…if it’s brown flush it down.” We the waxing and waning of supply and demand brings us back to the basics, conserve, conserve, conserve. Water Wealth Contentment and health don’t go too far if you’re out of that flow that makes it all happen so let’s go back to the well that hopefully springs eternal and pray for rain! And in the mean time conserve, conserve, conserve. On with the music at hand, that does not seem to be short in supply. One of my favorite slide guitarists on the scene Dennis Johnson is returning this year to the West Side Theatre Sat March 7th. Dennis is steeped in the history of the slide rubbin’ elbows with all the guys back in the 1960’s Blues scene in SF. Fellow players Ron Thompson and Roy Rogers among others helped shape his style, and Dennis has done his homework able to play the styling of his mentors Robert Johnson and Elmore James to the present day electric/ eclectic slide artists. Now hailing from Sacramento CA he is active touring and writing and his new album coming out is “Slide Avenue,” which features his 61 Martin New Yorker guitar with D-Armond pickups and his 12-string Dobro. Also on the album is Joe Craven who lends a Jazzy New Orleans pianistic approach. If you love the Blues guitar with great grooves to dance to come down, you won’t be disappointed! Check out: DennisJohnsonslide.com. Blue Monday Party is back in business with monthly events in the downtown. Please come down Monday Feb 3th to the Barkin’ Dog Grill at 6:30 and hang with Johnny & Kelly with special guest on bass and vocals Tim Allen and horn section. Come down to Jam, listen, dance, or hoist a glass and enjoy! We would love to have you help continue the tradition in the downtown. Also on the down low Johnny Valdes is doing

a monthly Jazz guitar and all instrument clinics with food and beverage on Sunday afternoon. So if you want to learn to burn give a holler and I will hook you up, Eric at: Mbenson@fire2wire.com. And speaking of the who’s who of Jazz guitar shredders Taylor endorsed guitarist John Stowell coming at you for a house concert with Johnny Valdes in duo setting on Monday Feb 17th at location to be announced, email me for the info. The State Theatre, home of the MAMA awards continues with some community friendly booking. Feb 8th Caravanserai does a great job of Santana in tribute band, March 7th Tommy Castro returns, and May 9th Asleep at the Wheel plays. Get tickets early for Tommy as he sells out! The Gallo continues to amaze me with their booking. The lineup for Feb: 5th with Celtic Nights, 16th: Lonestar, and 25th: B.B. King. Facebook is ablast with local Blues groups getting the vote out to open for B.B., pretty cool stuff. Who am I voting for well tough call: Joe Barretta, Jeremy Norris

and Dangerous Mood, John Rosenblum all would do a great job. Another place for a quiet listen to music in ambient environment that is catching on is DEWZ Restaurant’s Wine Bar. The Saturday night music is from 7:30 to 10:00 or so and features solo and small groups of musicians playing at acoustic volumes in the informal environment with folks enjoying wine tasting and a little noshing bites. In February you will hear from: Francesca Bavaro, Pat Durr of Home Grown, with special guests, John King & Robin Montgomery dueling Jazz guitars, and the mighty Tim Allen piano & vocals with the best of Elton, Billy Joel and the standards, and Patty Castillo, and others. Come any night you won’t be disappointed. On the clubbing side: Hero’s sports Lounge highlights: 2/7 Big Earl & Cryin Shame, Rob Hill, Jeremy Norris, Prof Max Smith, 2/14 comedy show, 2/28 Levee, Josh Rosenblum, 3/8 Marirose & the Gypsies, Surla’s with Thurs night bands for 9:30 on, Vito’s Ristorante with Al Medina Tues 6:00 pm, Tresetti’s World Café with Patty Castillo Fridays, and Boardroom with music Tues to Sat nights. On the kickin out the jams side: Barkin’ Dog Thursdays with Dave Dow, (Jazz), Queen Bean Sundays hosts jam with acoustic, rock music. Need to get, give me something to promote get me at: mbenson@fire2wire. com, or cell 209-918-7033. Peace out, Eric Benson

I _ Wave Editing “The how to in audio wave editing”

Top Of The Barrel by Aaron Rowan

by Tru Luv Lopez It’s beginning to look a lot like MUMfest!

Yes, I _ wave editing.

Let me explain. I started behind the scene observing recording engineers watching them go back and forth with band members. On traditional recording consuls, rerecording instruments or vocals, punching in new recordings all in order to fix mistakes during the recording session. This was a hassle. Today we find ourselves in a new age of computing. There is great software that can bypass all the hassle by cutting, copying and pasting vocals or even instruments in wave formats. Wave Editors are digital audio editors and there are many sources of software available to perform this function. Most can edit music, apply effects and filters, adjust stereo channels and so much more with waveform editing views. Many are freeware programs without any limitations. Let’s begin with understanding the wave file and what it is. This will be the format you always want to begin editing with. Do not start off with MP3s as these are “compressed files”. Waveform Audio File Format (WAVE, or more commonly known as WAV due to its filename extension is a Microsoft and IBM audio file format standard for storing an audio bitstream on PCs. This is the main format used on Windows systems for raw and typically uncompressed audio and high quality.

Tip: Import your music in the editor and begin by cutting the vocals. Highlight the clip and begin playing with the equalizer and volume. Familiarize yourself with your available tools. Practice make perfect. You can find many tutorial YouTube video online that can give you a step by step on editing. There was a point in my life when I was very quick with editing on the fly during recording sessions. I found it easier to edit popping noise or to punch in vocals and edit the audio curve to cut out any extra unwanted words or sounds with wave editors. This saved time and money. For any question drop a comment on the page at www.modestoview.com www.facebook.com/tlmusica Tips: This is how I start my recording process. 1. Compose the music 2. Record the dry vocals 2. Edit the vocals using edit software 3. Mix the tracks 4. Master the song.

In addition to the upcoming main weekend festival (April 4-6), which features a wide range of acoustic sounds, there will be a succession of daylong, more genre-oriented mini-fests throughout this year. The first such event is called ‘Americana Hustle’ and will take place on Saturday afternoon 2/15, at two venues just a short block apart: Café Deva (J & 12th St.) from 3-6:30 PM, and Peer Recovery Art Project (J & 13th) from 12-6. Comb over….. eh, I mean, come over and enjoy Americana talent from around the northern San Joaquin Valley including Bethany & The Pick ’N Pull, Tractor-Boy Chris Ward, Andrew Alvarez, Chris Farris, Erin Odessa, Ben Vogel and more; plus visiting headliners including bay area Americana/punk group Vagabondage and a trio of Aussie songbirds: Carrie Henschell, Sue Ray and Melissa Fraser. 14 wonderful singer/songwriter acts total! No cover at Deva, and a $10 donation at Peer Recovery. Future mini-MUMfests will be devoted to string music, country/western, bluegrass, and vintage/lounge/jazz tunes. My good friend Roy Dean has recently found his way back to Modesto, and is as hard at work as ever making music, now performing as Sparrow Grove with his better half Cortnee. I’ve been acquainted with Roy for years but have only had the honor of really getting to know him over the past couple months, and he has been a blessing like few people I have known on the local music circuit. Roy has just released a new album, ‘The Gospel Road’, featuring 7 songs in the oldtime/gospel vein. Roy’s gritty, down-home songwriting is as cool as ever, and Cortnee’s backup vocals on a song or two make things all the sweeter. Standout tracks are the opening duet ‘Come The Sunrise,’ and ‘Golden Shores.’ No preachiness here, just a guy sharing what’s in his ten-sizes-too-big heart. You can find that album as well as an archive compilation at sparrowgrove.bandcamp.com. The somewhat nomadic indie folk out-

fit The Breaking Yard, currently based in Portland, bring their orchestral sound back to Modesto on Wednesday 2/5 for an unplugged show at the Hotel Euterpe (my house concert series.) Stockton songwriter Sue Dean will open the evening. You can email me at crashdog3@yahoo.com for more info. Saturday 2/8, a special treat: a bluegrass double bill at Tuolumne River Lodge (2429 River Rd.) featuring Nu-Blu on tour from North Carolina, and The Sisters Grim Band from southern CA. Show starts at 7pm; advance tickets $12 by calling 529-5910 or 534-9284. Friday 2/21, catch Nashville songbirds Jessica Campbell & Sara Beth Geoghegan giving a wonderful listening-room set hosted by my good friend Sue Cotter starting at 7 PM. Email cottersL@yahoo.com for details. Friday 2/21, country/western crooner Juni Fisher (three-time Western Music Association winner for female performer and 2011 WMA entertainer of the year) is featured at the Great Valley Songwriter Series held at Central Grace Church (918 Sierra Dr. @ 1st St.) at 7:30 PM. $10 donation at the door.

FIT Dangerously Thin? by Efren Martinez At 137lbs some might say I’m too thin, but according to those Hollywood media images, I’m at a perfect visual weight. Regardless of that, 137lbs is a good weight for me when it comes to racing; but may not be so good when it comes to me maintaining my own health and well being. In photo A, you’ll notice that I’m very slim at 137lbs and even though toned and fast when I’m this thin, I tend to catch colds more often as well as succumb to more fitness injuries. In 2013 I experienced more fitness injuries than in previous years when I was few pounds heavier. In fact, in 2013 I developed a nueroma in my right foot that kept me out of a few races. I still did fairly well, but having to race with this neuroma discomfort and maintain my speeds made it a bit more challenging. Nonetheless I just rolled through it. At the beginning of 2014 my doctor advised me to have a cortisone shot and that I should stop running for awhile. This came as a blow to me since I am a Tri-Athlete and running is my forte. In fact it’s my favorite part of any Triathlon and also where I gen-

A

erally take down my competitors for the win. Needless to say I was crushed, then during a swim secession it came to me that since racing will have to take a back seat for awhile why not add on a few more pounds of muscle to regain some strength as well as maintain my happiness in fitness. Well the more I thought about it the more I liked this idea, after all just as it can be unhealthy to be overweight, it can also be just as unhealthy to be underweight. Yes,

being extremely thin can have it’s own unhealthy drawbacks as I previously mentioned above. I came up with a fitness plan to add on a few more pounds of muscle. As we all know, muscle does weigh more then fat so in order to accomplish this I had to do a 360 degree turn around in my fitness training and diet to increase my weight with muscle while still holding a very low fat count. I ended up accomplishing this by taking my doctors advice, I stopped running all together and substituted it with weight training. In fact I dropped my cardio workouts by more then half and increased my weight training repetitions, added pilates in my workouts with several sessions of resistance training. My nutrition had to change too and changed to mostly protein meals at certain key times of the day with very few carbohydrates in between. The results came on fast. As a runner I had always struggled to keep weight on, but once I stopped running my body structure began to form with a more healthier curved muscular shape. In picture B I’m at 145lbs and my upper body has a great deal more muscle verses a slim-

mer me. I’m not exactly sure if I will continue to build more muscle, but I do know that I will race again at any weight and as soon as my doctor gives me the green light. I feel it’s important for all of us to go by our own comfortable weight standards and what is healthy for each individual instead of those extreme thin images that the media instills in us of how we should look. Having curves on our body structure isn’t only a healthy thing, but beautiful too.

Fitness tips to build muscle fast

Warm-up for 15 minutes on the elliptical prior to weight lifting. This gets your blood moving to your arms, legs and chest. Right after you’re strength-training workout: consume 30-40 grams of whey protein. 5 grams of creatine. 70-80 grams of dextrose. “sugar” 5-10 grams of glucosemene. “optional” 5 Muscle Building foods: #1 Mackerel #2 Chocolate milk #3 Vinegar #4 Raspberries #5 Water

BLUES Country and Rock Alive and Well in Modesto This Month

Valentine’s Day

by ‘Big’ Earl Matthews

by Leia Johnson Valentine’s day is a great time to give people little gifts showing them that you appreciate them. If you are like me, and you procrastinate until the last minute, here are some easy but creative ideas. Decorate a miniature cereal box and draw on a little card. “I CEREALisly like you” its corny, but its creative. If you’re into making friendship bracelets, make some and write a letter saying “Life would knot be the same without you!”. I recently went to Chartreuse Muse; a local art shop downtown. There are cute origami earrings, woven bracelets, scarves, knit coffee mug sweaters, and a ton of other unique presents. You can really be shopping for anyone there, a sibling, parent, grandparent, or a friend. I hope you all have a marvelous February and enjoy this little word search that I’ve made!

Hello Friends, I hope you are all enjoying the winter that wasn’t. We have had so much sun that my girlfriend got a sunburn the other day. Let’s get down to business — This month is going to be a lot of fun. I am trying something new this winter, my own blues fest. It’s called Rock Away Your Winter Blues and I really hope you can all make it out to Hero’s Brewhouse on Feb 6th to see all the great music we will have in store. Most of the acts are local inoculating the Rob Hill Band, Professor Maxx Smith, the Jeramy Norris Band and of course Big Earl and the Cryin Shame. We do have one out of town band and I really think you are going to like them. From the shores of Huntington Beach come the Harlis Sweetwater Band. HSB released their first cd last year to great reviews and are playing all over California and beyond now. They have a really aggressive sound, not the kind of a band you can ignore. I really feel like this show will have a little something for everyone to enjoy. On Feb 8th Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame will be in Dublin at Delaney’s Dublin Sports & Grill with Blue VooDoo. This is a great spot with great food, a huge selection of beers on tap and a nice stage and sound system. This should be a great night for those who like to to dance. For Valentine’s Day, Feb 14th I would like to suggest you check out Willy Tea up at the Gypsy Shack in Jamestown, there will be music and some Burlesque. A special package is available that includes strawberries and fresh whipped cream for added romance. The Gypsy Shack is a great little place right on the main drag in downtown Jamestown. It’s got character for days and lot of great places to curl up and watch a show. On Feb 15th is the Camp Jack Hazard fundraiser at the Gallo Center for the Arts. You can see all the details for this show in the featured article in this months issue. On the 22nd Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame

The Harlis Sweetwater Band are riding a wave of success from the shores of Hunting Beach to Hero’s Brewhouse right here in Modesto on Feb 7th. will be playing over at the Cow Track Lounge in Oakdale. Its always a lot of fun at the Track and I do hope to see you there. Last but, not least at the end of the month, the Poorhouse Millionaires and the Ryan Russell band are heading out on the road again and this time we are going north. We are going up to Humboldt County for a few shows in my old stomping grounds. Its a really exciting time for us and I just wanted to share with all of you. Thanks for all your loving support. As always I look forward to seeing all of you out at a show.
