Greetings Happy Valentine’s Month! ModestoView Loves Modesto

This is a really fun time of the year and is especially good as we start our second year of

ModestoView Magazine Version 2.0. This has been a very exciting year and I am really proud of the group of people that come together each month to really make a difference for a positive Modesto life. I hope you have liked our issues, our new look and have met some new people in our community. ModestoView is created and produced by the people in town that make things happen. We are so very fortunate to have the artists, photographers, the promoters, the singers, the songwriters, the trainers and the thinkers, not to mention (as cliché as it is) the movers and the shakers all teamed up to spread the positive word about where we live. I hope that everyone that logs on or reads ModestoView learns a couple of new things about our Modesto USA, finds something new to do, and that they then help spread the cheer that we provide every single day. The number one goal of ModestoView is to celebrate the good in our city and ways that people can get involved, connect and make Modesto USA, “A Classic American City”. Now go out and tell some friends about the things you read here today. We can’t spread the positive word about Modesto without our wonderful advertisers. You are the best companies in Modesto for helping us print and deliver ModestoView to thousands of homes, hundreds of businesses reaching nearly 90,000 people. If you want the best way to advertise in town and support a positive message at the same time, ModestoView is for you. Support the businesses you see in ModestoView. Thanks to my wonderful family and my company Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group for allowing me to support this great city. Make sure you tell us what you like, what you want us to cover and how we can make ModestoView better each month. Wishing a Classic American Graffiti Modesto USA Day to all of you. Plethora of Performances By Kaye Osborn High School Highlights! Gregory High Drama Department is presenting “Love Struck”. A Valentine Dinner Show takes place Sat., Feb. 11th in the GHS multi-purpose room at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12.00 and will include the one act “Check Please,” musically themed performances based on love, and an enchilada dinner.

Gearing up for the second month of the

year! Hope you were able to catch some productions in January. February has a plethora of offerings! Please check the Modesto View calendar at the end of each issue. And people say there is nothing to do in Modesto? I am showcasing one special event happening on Feb. 17 and Feb. 18 at the Martin Peterson Event Center Ernest Zulia’s adaption of Robert Fulgham’s wonderful book All I Needed to Learn, I Learned in Kindergarten. It is a brainchild of director Kimberly Ogden. She is the person responsible for discovering a book about Children of the Dust Bowl that was professionally performed and embraced last fall at the Gallo Center for the Arts. Kimberly first produced this show last fall at Valley Christian High School in Dublin. The high school performers did an admirable job but a lot of material was beyond the reach of their years. All I Really Need to Know focuses on the milestone of our live and the experiences that form our character. The things we learn about ourselves on life’s journey and the common ground that connects all of us. It is not a straight narrative but rather a string of vignettes illustrating a snap shot in time. The vignettes run the gamut from silly to sublime. The script is heart touching and pert. The show is presented as a Readers Theater and for those unaware of this particular style, it is drama presented through story telling. Musical performances are woven throughout that enrich and enhance the evening. The show

6

is a fundraiser for the Stanislaus Literacy Center. There will be Silent Auctions both nights. All I Learned features three seasoned performers familiar to Modesto audiences. I was selected to perform in this event and have performed in many local productions, last seen in Prospect Theater’s acclaimed To Kill a Mockingbird at the Gallo Center. Charlene West was most recently seen in A Delicate Balance at Prospect Theater and Children of the Dust Bowl at the Gallo Center. Daniel Ogden is making his return to the stage after performing in many MJC productions. Don Lundy is retired from Superior Court. He is an accomplished musician. This is his first dramatic presentation. Two musicians Stephanie King and Megan Osborn from Turlock complete the cast.

The Beyer and Johansen Performing Arts Departments present the beloved musical Grease. All Performances are in the Beyer Little Theater. Performance Dates: Feb. 10th, 11th, 16th, 17th and 18th at 7:30 pm and Feb. 19th at 2pm. Tickets prices: $10 general admission, $8 students/seniors. No children under 5 admitted. Tickets may be purchased on campus or reserved by emailing hildebrandt.m@monet.k12.ca.us. Any questions, please call (209) 576-4370

Becky’s Hearts

A VALENTINES STORY

Their relationship grew to the point that Buck made a proposal to Beatrice. He proposed that since they were doing so well apart, they should be able to do even better together. Beatrice told him that she needed time to think; after all, they were from separate worlds. Buck worked at The Horseshoe Ranch in Oklahoma and she was from the city. Buck’s response was to send Beatrice a letter telling her he was going to join the army if she would not be marrying him. She decided to marry him and he borrowed twenty dollars so they could get married.

Buck told the story of when he first met Beatrice. Buck’s father was going to meet a friend who served with him in WW I. Buck’s father suggested that he accompany him to visit his friend and meet his friend’s daughter. Initially, Buck was hesitant about meeting the daughter, but when he saw a picture of Beatrice he became enthusiastic and went to meet her.

Reflecting on their marriage, Beatrice said that Buck is a very patient and easy going partner. In addition, she mentioned that their deep faith has made a positive impact on their relationship. Buck also has a sentimental side, he has been carrying the same picture of a young Beatrice in his wallet for seventy years. The room was full of joy and cheerful conversation. Family members and friends of Buck and Beatrice Hudson were genuinely happy to be there for the celebration. Seventy years of marriage did not come easy, but according to this Waterford couple, it was worth the effort. Also in attendance at the banquet were Buck’s brother and sister-in-law, Dannie and Darleen Hudson, who will celebrate fifty five years of marriage this coming November.

BACCHUS

By Kate Serpa

F

or whatever sick, sick reason, I absolutely LOVE Valentines Day; it just so happens to be my favorite holiday. I usually keep this declaration to myself as it often earns me skeptical looks and raised eyebrows coupled with a condescending ‘why?’ Why you ask? Beneath my compelling, beautifully cold, and perfectly eyeliner-ed visage, I do believe I may be a bit of a romantic. Or it may have to do with the abundance of See’s chocolate and cheap champagne circulating that day. And despite the fact my closet is about as color-diverse as Johnny Cash’s, Valentines Day is the one day I will voluntarily wear pink and not hate myself for it.

8

Valentines does pack quite the high-expectations-for-date-night punch, however, and some of you may be unawares as to where to actually take your date. Never fear, ModestoView readers, for I have written this article specifically for you. Consider it a Valentine from me to all you uniformed types. So with my father, Rick, as my Valentines interview date (cue audience: aww!) off we went to Bacchus. I originally went to Bacchus for the mojitos. I have a barfly friend who states you can always judge a bar by their mojitos and Bloody Marys (however I think he’s a bit biased since those are just his two favorite drinks). I had heard tales of Bacchus’ fantastic mojitos (thanks to Ben, the “Mojito King”) and extensive wine list so obviously I had to make a trip on by. Upon entering Bacchus, I was struck by how damn pretty the interior of the establishment is. Bacchus boasts a ceiling-high wall of liquors, with a rigged library ladder to aid in reaching the top shelves, a huge above-ground wine cellar, and a sizable area for dining/ dancing/dancing while dining. Bacchus also boasts an enormous wine list with 30 by the glass and available split bottles. For those of you who like tequila

For more Modesto info: www.modestoview.com

(most of you know I do not), there are over 20 tequilas available; if scotch is more your speed, the list reaches over 20 as well. In summary, there’s a ton of really delicious stuff there. Be sure to try the delectable Cappuccini. Rod Oldfield has been working at Bacchus since day one (which would be five years ago this month), has been in the restaurant business since he was 15, and has earned major points with me for that one time he brought me out a shot glass full of bleu cheese-filled olives. Rod is also a substitute teacher for City Schools and wants to eventually become ajunior high/high schoolteacher. He was born and raised in Modesto, went to UC Santa Cruz to get his degree in politics (a perfect degree for a bartender if I do say so), and moved out of state thereafter. He ultimately decided to move back to Modesto because he fell in love with hiswife, Stacy (audience cue: aww!). So what, according to Rod, makes Bacchus extraordinary? “This place has two phases,” he stated. “On the weekdays it’s a great restaurant and on weekend nights the tables get pushed back and becomes a great bar. The food, drinks, and atmosphere concept

is basically upscale comfort. We deliver a good mix and we keep it affordable. My best experiences in bartending have been in local and independent places. They are the best spots. I never have to wear a nametag. It’s better for everything, for the city and the employees.” Rod just saved me a whole paragraph of writing with that fantastic quote; thank god I can write in shorthand so could get it all down. In short, Valentines Day people, Bacchus is a pretty ideal location for any romantic schmoozing you may be up for on Feburary 14th; and if things don’t work out as planned, you’ll at least have quick access to a delicious drink. Either way it’s a win-win. The staff is incredibly nice, the atmposhere is lovely, and Rod always delivers out fantastic drinks. Wed: 6-8 pm is wine tasting and food pairing night! Fri-Sat: DJ, dancing, debauchery (kidding). Sun-Mon: Closed Happy Hour is 3-6 pm every weekday: $3 well & beer, $5 mojitos, $6 appetizers

t is a great winter here in Modesto. School has been fun and I love the excitement and the school spirit during basketball season. The noise, the cheering, the game and I am proud to be in the MoHi Black hole and it is great to see the school spirit from all of the High Schools’ cheering sections. I am on the board of the Modesto Peace Life Center and this month, we take a look the elementary schools projects that really makes kids think. It is called “Reflections” Every year there is a theme and kids can create arts, poetry, multi-media or anything else that reflects the goal of creating peace and understanding in the world. This year, the theme is “Diversity means…”

We need more all ages places to hear music and hang out and Queen Bean is one of the best places, nice big patio, comfy living room and general peacefulness. I also like Serrano for coffee and smart culture and it is cool that Barking Dog and Deva host so much all ages music.

Queen Bean Schedule

SHAYLIN NICHOLE...MONKEYKNIFE FIGHT...JUNO’S CIRLeia Johnson of Lakewood Elementary School was recognized recently at CUS...VICTORIA BOYINGTON the 8th District Reflections Award Ceremony for her poem “I’m The Only Me”. Leia’s poem won first place for literature at the district level and has been submitted for judging at the state level. We are so very proud of her and expect great things from this amazing and talented Girl Scout.

I’m The Only Me If I were a rose and you were a tulip, would everything be the same? Because it doesn’t matter if you’re different; there would be no one to blame. Live your life fully, and joy try to seek, Nobody’s perfect, but we’re all unique. If every baby was born to look the same, What uniqueness would life bring? What sense of style would each one have? Wouldn’t it be horrid, scary and bad If everyone had the same hair and eyes; no chance to change no matter how man tries? So I’ll remember next time I’m down, I’m the only ME; that shouldn’t make me frown.

This is the second article in our series of features about folks that live right here in Modesto that our readers have expressed interest in. This month we sat down with Randall Padilla who was recognized by Guinness Book of World Records in 2010 for being the world’s fastest guitarist. Padilla has since endured some wild ups and downs but has reappeared in love, full of faith, hope and promise and best of all- Ready to rock!

RANDALL PADILLA

MF: There must be a good reason why you are referred to as “The Official Monster Guitarist.” Tell me about what you accomplished in 2009. Do you still hold the record? RP: I was recorded playing exactly 6 notes per beat at 235bpm, or 23.5 notes per second. At the time I was considered the world’s fastest guitarist. I no longer hold the record but that is a blessing in a way. When you are noted for something in particular you are often stereotyped. To break the record I was asked to play “Flight of the Butterfly.” I was frankly tired of getting requests to play the same song over and overagain. MF: You have been under the radar a bit lately. Have you been doing anything in particular to keep your hat in the ring? RP: I demonstrate guitars for Kona guitars at the National Association of Music Merchants event held in L.A. annually. This allowed me to meet inspirationssuch as Carlos Santana and Joe Satriani. I have also met musicians such as Lita Ford and Michael G. who I plan to collaborate with on my upcoming album. Locally, I give free lessons on Comcast channel 23 every Tues. at 8pm and Thurs. at 9 pm. The show is designed to give kids a chance to get free guitar lessons but anyone is welcome to watch and learn. MF: Where can locals find you now? Are you still giving lessons? RP: I am really all over the map lately. I will be opening Modesto Advanced Guitar Instruction in February. I also continue to pump out books, DVDs, online columns and magazine articles. I am also teaching lessons online at shredacademy. com and shredaholic.com. MF: You mentioned that you try to promote positive organizations that you really believe in. Tell me more about that. RP: I was a foster child from ages 4-18. I dedicate my life now to giving back to programs involved with foster children, animal rights and veterans. I believe that God put me here as his tool and gave me a talent and an audience. I feel like it is a duty not to squander the fame and the audience that I have developed. MF: You seem pretty happy. I have followed you on Facebook through some pretty dark times. What turned it all around? RP: A failed relationship and a new dedicated life partner added the fuel to a fire that has sparked a new sense of creativity and purpose. Life has never been this positive for me.

By: Modesto Famous

Padilla credits his girlfriend, Tysh Baria with his most recent success. He claims that she is the only thing that he has ever held tighter than a guitar.

Judy Garland lives on in Lorna Luft By: Chris Murphy

LORNA LUFT “This show is for your family, to bring your kids, your significant other, it is a show that tells the story of a mother and a daughter and it is a really cool valentine”

Nearly every human being in the last 80 years that has ac-

cess to at TV or movie theatre has seen the Wizard of Oz. Millions of Pink Floyd fans have watched the film simulcast to Dark Side of the Moon and the dialog in the movie has become part of our modern day lexicon. Lorna Luft was walking across Manhattan earlier this year and encountered blocked roadways due to a presidential motorcade and asked a local policeman, “How do I get across town?” and he replied “Click your heals together three times”. If he only knew that he was talking to the daughter of Judy Garland, who famously played Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, who then clicked her heals three times and returned to Kansas. Lorna however had to wait until the motorcade was cleared. Well Modesto is clicking its heels this month because Lorna Luft will bring her amazing multi-media performance Songs My Mother Taught Me to the Gallo Center and will be drawn into a Valentine’s story about the most famous female performer of all time and her relationship with her daughter. ModestoView was fortunate to spend time with Lorna to learn about this show and about her life. Lorna is the daughter of Judy Garland and Sid Luft and at age 11, made her television debut on the Judy Garland Show. She is married to Colin Freeman, who is also her musical director. ModestoView: Performing at the Palace on Broadway in 1967 with your legendary mom must have been surreal, do you still remember those performances? Lorna Luft: Yes, it was a wonderful introduction to the world of entertainment. It felt so warm, so amazing and I was still young. When I got stage fright, I felt confident as my mom (Judy Garland) was watching from the wings. I was raised in a family to give 110%. She gave me so much self confidence and strength. She was everyone’s legend, she waseveryone’s icon but she was my mom.

MV: You have had a career with a lot of variety, stage, song, film, TV, what do youfind the most enjoyable and rewarding? LL: The stage is so rewarding as your performance is recognized immediately. In live theatre, you get your acceptance right away. TV or Movies are so much different as you wait for a long time after the film is wrapped and the response from the audience is delayed and out of your control. I just finished Irving Berlin’s White Christmas and did 8 shows a week. I like the relationship with the live audience and I do nothing but wake up every day and be grateful. I am so very lucky to be working all the time, doing something I love and I don’t take it for granted. MV: What is your favorite song of all time to sing? LL: I don’t have one that is my favorite as that would mean that the songs I didn’t pick are not my favorites. This show is really created around some of the songs I bring me the most joy and that I have a relation-

ship with and that mean a lot to me. The songs in this show are very personal and tell an amazing story. MV: What is one thing you want people to know abut your mom that they may not know? LL: This show says to so many people, is look at the work that she left us and look at the joy that you got from watching these films. Every single little girl from the age of 9 to the age of 90 can enjoy what she left us. The stories I tell are of of how I grew up in my home. You are walking in to my living room hearing stories about a woman who was the world greatest female entertainer and you’re hearing it from her daughter. MV: Have you ever watched the Wizard of Oz along with Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon? LL: Oh …Duh…seriously, every single story or clue about the Wizard of Oz, we have checked it out and we kind of roll our eyes. I did seriously listen to side one of the

INTER VIEW

M

It just shows how much this film and the work of my mother is loved around the world.  MV: I understand that you have one of the Ruby Slippers in your own collection? How does it feel having something so well known around the world to look at every day? LL: The Ruby Slippers and my mom’s Oscar are in a bank vault. These are very special treasures and they are very well protected. There are so many stories and documentaries about the shoes, but to my mom, they were just shoes she wore in a movie, and then she went on to the next movie.   MV: What is a hint of the exciting things that we can expect at the show. It is amazing how we blended the orchestras from her recordings with my orchestra. Each song is related to the screen and connects to tell how I grew up and how special my mom was. It is a wonderful night of family entertainment.  I am very very fortunate that I have songs like “Over the Rainbowâ€? and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmasâ€? that are part of my family and loved all over the word. It will be exciting to perform at the Gallo Center.  Lorna Luft Songs My Mother Taught Me, A Celebration of the music of Judy Garland. THRASHOCALYPSE 2012 By Mike Vanek I

t took almost a year to produce, with problems at three different venues and Modesto Police and multiple delays, the 2nd annual Thrashocalypse actually happened. This 2-day event started with a jubilant mood as people slowly rolled in. It was a great day of heavy metal with bands like Aimaora. This Times Brutal, Attackacardia, 3 Luna’s & Aborticide among others. At 6pm I was reminded of an email I was sent a few days earlier. I booked 2 bands that belong to an organization called The New York Death Militia (NYDM) and a band cancelled because he was told the NYDM was going to jump everyone at the show. We had an agreement with the Venue and the NYDM Bands that they wouldn’t be able to wear their vests at the show, as is the norm for venues in the Modesto area. I got a call from the band CURSED, the NYDM band from our area that their members were coming and NOT removing their vests. The next thing I knew there were 40 of these people wearing their vests vs. my 6 security guards. The things I heard being said about my show could not be repeated here but they reflect a GANG mentality that has NO PLACE in our metal scene! Luckily cooler heads prevailed and the situation was handled and nobody was hurt. THANK GOD! Due to the NYDM Situation we lost 4 bands and Day 1 ended on a somber note at 8pm but it was a memorable day of music. Now Day 2 was a History making day for local metal! With bands like Decomposition, Forever Obscured, South Africa’s Contrast The Water, Reno Nevada’s Pain Clinic who made history by playing 2 songs with Rick Hunolt of Exodus, Nothing But Losers, Hatchet, Witchaven, Bonded By Blood and Warbringer. One of the major highlights was The A.F.A.R speech by Mr. Chris Kontos (Attitude Adjustment/ Ex-Machine Head) who Introduced South Africa’s Contrast The Water who were one of the best bands I’ve ever seen! Also the Pain Clinic Set with

Rick Hunolt of Exodus plays Thashocalypse Thrash Metal pioneer Mr. Rick Hunolt, formerly of Exodus, who after making a guest appearance with Exodus at Gary Holt’s (Exodus/Slayer) Wedding, played 2 song’s with Reno’s Pain Clinic. Soon after it was announced that he would play on their next album and would start a band of his own. All in all Thrashocalypse was a show we will never forget. I would like to thank our friends at CENTRAL VALLEY DEATH METAL for supporting underground metal in the Modesto area and for letting us have our event at their venue, The Workshop. I will always respect these 6 gentlemen. We had a great time all weekend. These guys have supported local metal for 10 years or so and without any fanfare or notoriety. They are all about the metal as it should be and these guys have bands that just crushed Thrashocalypse like Decomposition and Aborticide. Thrashocalypse will return next year so watch out for it! That’s all for me this month. Keep one foot in the gutter and one fist in the gold Mike Vanek facebook.com/mike.vanek 209 Productions Presents... BRETT DENNEN By: Chris Murphy The YMCA’s Camp Jack Hazard has been a very important part of youth develop-

ment for over 87 years. Thousands of kids had amazing experiences at the camp over the years and many adults today remember how important it was to their childhood. With the financial problems of the the YMCA in 2010, Camp Jack Hazard was at risk. A new non-profit foundation was create to keep this important camp alive for a new generation. The world famous Oakdale native singer/songwriter Brett Dennen is an alumni of this camp and has stepped up to return to Modesto for a very important benefit show at the Gallo Center for the Arts on February 29, performing along with his brother Nathan. Brett Dennen is one of Oakdale’s most amazing secrets. Travelling the world, touring with musicians like Guster, John Mayer, Dave Matthews, songs featured on TV shows like House and Grey’s Anatomy and working on the Chimes of Freedom Bob Dylan projects and as an ambassador for the Mosaic Project, Brett has become one of the most critically acclaimed singer songwriters. With all of this success, Brett is just getting going as 2012 starts. As he works on a new album and readies for a trip to the Middle East, Brett took some time out with ModestoView. ModestoView: It has been a while since you head out on the road from Oakdale. It is amazing that you have become so well known and critically acclaimed around the world and yet so many people here in town, don’t realize that you are from this area. Are you able to get home very often and enjoy your family and friends? Brett Dennen: All the time. I spend a lot of time in the mountains, up highway 108. My parents live in Oakdale, so I come to see them quite a bit, and I have a few friends from high school and CJH that I’m still really close with.

MV: Who were your early musical inspirations? BD: Paul Simon, Neil Young, Graham Nash, Van Morrison, Metallica, Primus, Beastie Boys, Journey, Tiny Tim, Smothers Brothers, New Kids on the Block, MC Hammer, Nelson, blah blah blah MV: This last year was amazingly busy with the Loverboy tour and then the fall European tour, do you find the road more interesting now than you used to? BD: I used to travel around in a pickup truck with a camper shell. It was interesting back then because I was free to doanything, Like sleep on the floor of somebody’s house who came to the show that night. The less you have, the less you need I guess. Now I have a crew and a bus and a tight schedule. A lot less freedom. But that doesn’t stop me from appreciating life on the road. I’ve made friendships in every town and have favorite places I like to go. And I know all the places not to go too, I suppose. MV: Loverboy was one of the best albums of 2011 and now you are in songwriting mode this spring, what do you want to do differently with your next album? BD: I want it to be a little more acoustic. Slower songs. MV: Where is the most interesting place you have every put your guitar case out and played (if you ever have)? BD: A miniature flying saucer building competition in Humboldt. MV: Where was your very first gig? BD: Campfires at Camp Jack Hazard MV: You have a house up in Strawberry, do you spend time up in the mountains writing and does the Pinecrest area create inspiration for you? BD: Absolutely. I spent so much time in the mountains growing up. Its a huge source of inspiration. It will always be. Hopefully I can live up there full time someday. Tuolumne County is a secret gem of central California. I encourage everyone to go visit. Camp Jack Hazard is up there. Pine Crest Lake. Dodge Ridge Resort. Amazing hiking, fishing and camping. Bigfoot. Clampers. Toothless dentists.

MV: Where do you live now? BD: Santa Monica MV: Modesto is very lucky to have you play a rare show in town at the Gallo Center as a benefit for your childhood camp, JackHazard. Why was this camp so special to you? BD: First of all, I’m lucky to play there. I’m lucky just to play I guess. But the Gallo center is beautiful. Everything Gallo is. They’re peacock collection is stunning. Camp Jack Hazard made me who I am today. It nurtured a love andconnection with the mountains. It taught me the importance of community and family. It inspires me to be the best I can be and live up to simple core values. It’s also where I learned to play guitar. MV: The YMCA and youth camps like Jack Hazard have a challenge in raising money and staying open, what can we do in the community to help? BD: Send your kids to camp. It’s anincredible experience that lasts a lifetime. Tell your kids to tell their friends. Have more kids and send them to camp as well. MV: You were involved with children’s music and boosting self-esteem early on with your Mosaic Project and Peace and BetterWorld CD. Were these songs inspired from your camp and childhood years? BD: Those songs are actually curriculum for theMosaic Project, which is a non-profit program that works with children in the bay. The Mosaic Project brings kids of different backgrounds together and educates them on building peaceful diverse communities. So the songs are very literal to the program. All the things I sing about in those songs are things we talk with the kids about. MV: You have really put your effort into youth programs including the amazing Invisible Children project donating from proceeds of Loverboy sales and as a musical ambassador; what do people need to know about this to help inspire contributions? BD: It’s easy to not feel connected because we are so far away and don’t see it every day. But just imagine yourself living in a conflict zone and having your own child, stolen in the middle of the night and taken as a prisoner and trained to become soldier.

MV: The winter ski season really didn’t deliver here, have you gotten some snow time in yet this season? If not, what’s your plan? ND: Not yet. I’m praying for some more storms. If Dodge Ridge doesn’t open, I’ll take up badminton. MV: One of the people you like is Pete Yorn and he was friends with the Grandaddy crew a few years back. Did you all connect with each other around this time and did you ever collaborate with that group, producer Lucky Lew, and the other Oakdale musicians like Dave Hanley and Built Like Alaska? BD: I never really connected with Grandaddy. I know Hanley from the Strawberry Music Festival. I’ve always admired his playing. Built Like Alaska was the band in Oakdale that we all looked up to. Don’t sleep on the Good Luck Thrift Store Outlet and the solo meanderings of Willy Tea. There’s some amazing music coming out of the area. MV: Who would you most like to do a duet with? BD: The Dixie Chicks MV: People don’t realize that Brett Dennen was released in 2004. From Oakdale to UC Santa Cruz to touring the world must have quite an impact., how do you think you have changed the most since then? Are you more introspective, more or less outgoing? BD: I think I’m much more outgoing now. Ithink you can hear the change in the music. MV: You are heading off to the Middle East in Feb, visiting places like Dubai the very day before your Gallo Center show, will you be performing there? BD: Yes, I’m playing a festival there. It’s mostly a bunch of ex pats and vacationers that come to the festival. Not many locals attend the festival. MV: Your brother Nathan just released his CD and he will be opening for you, how do think that you influenced his songwriting style or has he developed on his own? BD: I don’t think I’ve influenced him at all

really. He has his own brand of music that is totally unique and true to him. He’s awesome. Not only is he talented, he’s probably the funniest guy I know. He’s always got me cracking up. He has devoted himself to working in the non-profit world with organizations that benefit children. He has a huge heart and he’s way better looking than me. In seventh grade he had the highest math scores in school. He’s pretty much amazing. MV: Anything special that you really want to dowhen you are back home for this show? BD: Hopefully there will be snow up at Dodge Ridge and I can go skiing. MV: Do you have a favorite Modesto area food that you miss the most when you are away? BD: I think Modesto has amazing Mexican food. Specifically all the little taquerias. They’re all good. I used to eat at the Brighter Side all the time. Amazing sandwiches. MV: One of our regular ModestoView questions is: Do you prefer the Beatles or Stone and why? BD: Two completely different types of music. I don’t even know how to answer that. They’re both great. Unity Music By Jennifer Allsup

Skate Jams, Skateboard competi-

tions an Underground California Amateur Skateboarding team out of the Bay Area, Livermore Ca. to be exact!!! In 2003 Unity was a little old skate shop, which consisted of doing skate competition, poetry slams and live music. Many well known skaters, record labels and musicians supported Unity back in the day, such as Tony Hawk, Thrasher Magazine, Dead Kennedy’s, Wild Records, Road Lords and Mark Gonzales. In 2007, Unity made a big jump to Modesto and changed Unity to more of a musical adventure, with founder Tony T. of The Pendletons and Tony T. and the Headhunters. In 2010 XFest had their first Rockabilly stage in Modesto and Unity Music was a big part in gathering all the bands to perform. This is where Tony T. met the love of his life Miss Lauren, who is now the womanly-hand in the Unity Music adventure. Along, with their lovely lady street-team Valerie Gray and Lindsay Atkinson. Unity Music adventures in Modesto consist of “Day at the Altamont “ which, would be Mike’s Roadhouse Bar, it is an amazing little bar in the middle of the Altamont with the Modesto Throttles car show and live music with DAM and the Pendletons.

18

Also, Wreckin Rita of the Belladonna Beauties where in attendance. In June of 2011 right along with Modesto’s famous Graffiti Nights, Unity Music threw their first big show at Minnie’s on McHenry called “The Tiki Party” live Rockabilly, Pin-ups, and Classic Cars. Needless to say it was a huge success for Tony T. and Lauren. Look for it in June of 2012. You will not be disappointed! Tony said in so many words “They say when you retire from punk music, you jump onto a swinging grand time with Rockabilly”! Even though back in the day Tony T. and Lauren of Unity Music were huge Ska and Punk fanatics, rockabilly lives within their souls. Unity Music not only does “Rockabilly” bookings but would love to hook-up with other genres as well. Unity Music strives on supporting local talents and our community of Modesto! Tony T. and Lauren encourage you to contact them for shows near and abroad. Advertisement for Starving Musicians By Tara Tinsley There’s nothing like getting things for

free especially when you’re a starving musician. Being creative and knowing a little bit about marketing can help but here are a few tips to start you out there without having to pay for it. #1 Social Media. In today’s day and age this is the most obvious answer. The more people you reach, the more people you reach and so on! Askyour friends to “share” your posts on social networking sites and offer incentives such as telling everyone that whoever likes your band page on Facebook will be entered to win a free autographed CD or free ticket to a show (or something you can offer) and who ever shares that post will have an extra entry. Not only will they like your page but they will share it. #2 Get printed. Do something for the community as a band or as a musician. Put together a charity show, plant a tree, or do something worth printing so the newspapers and magazines will want to write about it. Establish relationships with local or regional writers and make sure they always knowwhat you are doing and if it’s press worthy, they’ll print it! Send music mags your CD for review and put writers

greens M

A

R

K

on the guest list to your shows for possible show reviews. #3 Get on the Radio. It’s hard to get into regular rotation especially with major stations unless you have big bucks like the major labels do. You might not get into regular rotation at a big station but trying to hop on a station promoted event or creating and playing an event that is press worthy (for the community, cancer benefit, opening for semi-major artist etc) can get you an interview in studio and the possibility of playing songs live on the radio. If they have a local hour, send music in for that. You never know until you ask! College stations and the smaller non-corporate stations are good to look into as well because although they don’t have as wide of a reach, they can give you a good start into getting your songs in rotation if it fits their format and their DJ likes you! The more places you are the better. So be creative, take a marketing class or see what other people are doing and do it better. Use the money you save to better your equipment or head out on tour. You’ve played for free enough, now it’s time to make the “free” system work for you.

Benefitting the Community By: Guadalupe Ruiz, Alex Rendon, and Ryan Wilson

Winter is here! The question now is

where are the youth going? Having nothing to do in the Stanislaus Community leaves the youth out in the streets getting into trouble. In order to help and protect our future leaders we, the community, need a safe place for them to have fun. For instance, the community may use a gym or community center for events like movies, dances, games, and carnivals. Who will make this happen? If the community has a coordinator, he or she may be the first person to get things started. If the community does not have one, then the community should seek a responsible citizen to take charge. The person in charge of community activities could create a flier to advertise youth events. Some suggestions may be placing

them around town, in The View, and at schools. Opportunities to get together will give a chance for the youth to meet each other, and for some youth it may be an opportunity to develop better social skills. How can this benefit the parents? It relieves them from stress by giving their children a safe environment to hang out under adult supervision. All in all, it provides them an opportunity of free time or a chance to volunteer for the benefit of the children. Opening the community center to the youth benefits everyone in the community. It gives the youth a safe and fun environment. Volunteers need to step up and help our future leaders. College view continues to take opinions of local college students and allows them to be heard.

Can Love Last A Life-

time? In the thirty years that my husband, Casey, and I have been together, my thought was WOW we’ve made it. But, how is it possible? How do we communicate and interact with each other on a daily basis that allows us to be not only married, but lovers and friends as well? I’ve asked several couples with 40 and 50 + year marriages, “How has your love lasted?” Here are some of their responses

“Love That Lasts A Lifetime”

Top Ten Steps for Love To Last A Lifetime 1) Communication. Couples need to talk about anything and everything, no secrets. 2) Say “I Love You” daily, and also show it. It really is the little things, a cup of coffee without asking or filling up the car with gas. 3) Have a spiritual connection. God is first. Do unto your spouse, as you would have them do unto you. Dannie Hudson says, “God brought Darleen to me.” 4) Share your dreams together. Buying a house, children, wonderful vacations all of these are dreams you have together and this makes the fairy tale of happily ever after. 5) Promote good health. Having a mutual concern about health keeps you healthier in the later years. Romie and Gert (53 years) “In our lives, we try to eat right as well as exercise on a daily basis--at minimum, a walk each day. Above all that, we cherish the love we have for one another and maintain that also.” 6) Sex is more than just a physical act; it’s also an emotional connection. Touch and kiss each other every day. As years go by deep love and passion for each other bridges the stresses of family, work, and physical changes that come with age. 7) Make each other your BFF (best friends forever). Acknowledge and respect what the other person is; don’t try to control or change them. 8) Love is a choice. Choose to make each other happy every day, focus on the positive qualities. Don’t keep score. Most marriages have ups and downs, and there are times when we will not like our spouse

one bit. Choose to love during these difficult times. 9) You never know how strong your relationship is until it’s tested. When you do make it through a crisis together you will find you are tighter than ever. Sandy & Danny Emfinger (40 years) “I believe that our love has lasted so long is because we both have a great capacity to forgive. When one of us have maybe grown in a new direction the other has always been willing to adapt to changes that life brings. It simple easy to be with Danny he knows me better than anyone else in the world. I don’t believe that I would ever trust anyone like I trust Danny. Life is hard we have to just love and care for each other. Pitbull mentality. Never give up!“ 10) Take interest in your spouse’s hobbies. Don’t do it grudgingly, put a smile on your face and who knows, you might try that 25mile bike ride and he might go to the mall

and actually have fun. Dannie and Darlene Hudson (54 years) “We share common interests and we like being together.” When you come to the time after years of being together and you have that connection when you can almost read their mind, you have a shared history and the inside jokes, you can make eye contact that says volumes or the flirting with just a crooked smile - that is when you know your love has lasted a lifetime. It’s the first thing any non-poetry enthu-

siast tells me when I wax poetic about my love for the art. I get it; I really do. Pick up any Robert Frost or Emily Dickenson poem and read a few lines to yourself. You’ll likely feel confused at first pass. Let me share a little secret: read it aloud. When you speak the words, they make a lot more sense. They come to life. That, my friends, is why I love spoken word poetry. It’s why I think you’ll like it, too. I’ll be covering the local Modesto poetry scene in this feature, sharing special events, noteworthy lines from local poets andpointing out what I think you shouldn’t miss in the upcoming month. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Slam on Rye first. This poetry slam happens every third Wednesday of the month at Modesto’s Prospect Theatre. Sign-ups are open to any poet; consequently, it’s a real wild card. Of-

By Michelle Diemer tentimes, you’ll find professional-caliber poets behind the mic. Others, you’ll sit with bated breath watching a first-timer try to read their work through violently-shaking hands. It’s always worth a trip, though, because they feature professional poets at every event. These masters from around the country make the five dollar entry worth it. January’s Slam on Rye was perfect. It’s the

reason I venture out in the cold winter months. Here’s a line from that night from The Saint, a local legend. You said that you can do better than me Question is: Can you do better than yourself? Beautiful, right? Modesto’s poetry scene is popping this month. Check our event calendar for all the details. I’m definitely going to be at Smooth Grooves and Att-i-tudes featuring The Fine Line Feb. 17th at Deva Café. It’s an open mic, poetry and live blues music event hosted by Jai, Jennifer Hamilton and Elizabeth Sousa. I can virtually guarantee a good time. Can I get an amen?

When you meet Barbara Miller for the

first time, you meet what we all see up front, which is a polite and soft-spoken person on the outside. But when you run with her, you get a feeling of amazement and MC Hammer’s “You Can’t Touch This”. Barbara’s 72 years young and is what I consider a local running Hero. She’s been featured in Runner’s World, Running Times and was just recently on the cover of Norcal Running Magazine. Barbara has also received The USATF Outstanding Athlete Award for her age division 8 times. She was Runner’s World Female Master of the year at age 60 and in 2009 she was United States Track & Field (USTAF) Pacific Association Master Female runner of the year. In 2000, she was the SOS Female Outstanding Athlete of the year, which includes all sports and all age divisions. There’s more, but I’m sure you’re getting the picture post card/ video here, “You Can’t Touch This.” Like I said, when you first meet Barbara, she’s polite, soft-spoken and by all means a

very humble person. Her running accomplishments includes setting a world record at The Boston Marathon at the age of 60 with a time of 3:11:57 and she currently holds the Boston course record for her age division. She also has set other American records in the 5K, 8K, 10K, 12K, half marathon and marathon. She started to put up world records in the 55-59 age divisions and has continued all the way to her current age division 70-74. Some of her records have been broken, but she still holds records in several distances. The one she’s most proud of is her Boston half marathon record at age 60. She ran it in 1:29:49 and as far as she knows it hasn’t been broken. Barbara has been running for over 30 years and is an active runner and still races. In fact, she has signed up for a 4-mile race in Sacramento in February and a half marathon in March. She also plans to compete in the Buzz Oates Series in Sacramento. This is a series (13 in all) of races ranging from the 5K to the Half Marathon. She will also compete in some

PA/USTAF races mostly in the Bay Area and of course, some of our local races. Yes, Modesto View Readers, “You Can’t Touch This.” I asked Barbara what advice could she share with our young people today that find themselves too busy for exercise? She replied, “Just do it! You will feel better for it. Being physically fit really raises your quality of life. When you feel good about yourself it spills over into all aspects of your life. Your selfesteem goes up. Your confidence goes up, etc. You do not have to run to stay fit and healthy, but you do need to exercise everyday and make healthy food choices. Running is a personal choice for me. It has been a complete life changer. I feel blessed to have been able to travel to so many places and have so many running friends all over the United States. But, if running is not for you, do something that makes you move and keeps you happy and physically active. Your life will be much better for it.” In memory of Doug Braasch

Modesto View Readers, you can meet and greet our World Record Super Star running sensation on February 5th at The Super Sunday Relay’s in Modesto. This is a fast and scenic two-mile loop through a community park. Each of the three-person team will run the loop once. Individuals can choose to run the loop three times for the entire six-mile time. This is its only race like this locally and there are plenty of chances to win awards (given to top 3 in each age division) & raffle prizes. Get your family and friends together and form a fun Relay Team. For more information log onto www.cvrunning.com/super_sunday.htm or www.shadowchase.org or call 209-986-8446 email info@ cvrunning.com
