Greetings Modesto Friends!
February is the month for love. Love of so many things. Your valentine, your kids, your friends, your family and even the place you live or your favorite song. February has always been really special for our family as both of our daughters Madison and Abigail were born. There have been so many special times in our Februaries, as the rush of the new year wears off and we get introspective as we look forward to the rest of the year and how we really make our lives better and stay true to our goals and resolutions. This month, not only do we celebrate Valentine’s Day, we have Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday just a few days later. I always think about our eternal good friend Mitch Maisetti on Mardi Gras as his larger than life soul lives on and watches over all sorts of revelry in downtown Modesto. A tip of the glass to Mitch and all the Maisetti/Tresetti family. Plan on being a part of this fun event on Feb 17. There is a hole in the local music scene right now as Hero’s as closed, for what we hope is a short time. It is times like this when we need to remember that we need to be out there supporting live music, whether in a bar, café, performing art center or at an auditorium filled with student musicians. Our local group of musicians is amazing and with their teamwork, so many events live in Modesto. While Hero’s rebuilds, lets look around and make sure that we are encouraging the arts and music with our participation, our wallets, our planning ordinances and public support. The arts give Modesto character and excitement. Next on deck will be Luckyfest in March. Living here should be exciting. Live music, amazing food, public art, creative cocktails, classic Graffiti, charity events, picnics in the park, food festivals, Sloshball, bike rides, trail runs, cruise legends, song and dance, pubcrawls, fabulous restaurants, successful students,

I Could Have Been a Rock Star Interview with
MV: First, thank you for taking the time to chat with us. That means a great deal considering your big day of shooting people with arrows and making them swoon is coming up. So, what do you think of this whole Cupid gig? We’ve heard talk of you wanting to be a goat farmer or a weaver. Did your mother, Venus, the Roman goddess of love, beauty, sex, fertility, prosperity and desire have anything to do with your career choice? Cupid: I wanted to be in a new age rock band, but mom talked me into the “family biz”. I’m not saying she’s controlling, but she’s a goddess and when a goddess/mother talks, a good son listens. I rock the harp. I could have been in a sweet rock band! MV: Tell us how this Cupid deal works. How do you find people to shoot? Have you ever been sued, arrested or attacked? Cupid: I’ve never been sued, but I’ve been attacked in New York City. But hey, it’s New York City! About finding people to shoot - It is actually pretty easy. I mean, who doesn’t like love except bankers, right? The problem is getting people off their cell phones long enough to know they’ve been struck. I need bigger arrows! MV: Internet dating is a big deal nowadays. Do you find that more people are going that route instead of relying on you? Seriously, the arrow in the butt thing freaks us out. Match.com seems more logical. Cupid: Hey, I only aim for the butt because it’s meaty with no vital organs. I’m no freak! The Internet is about lust and I deal in good old-fashioned love. I feel like I’m under appreciated. You can’t google love buddy! MV: Tell us about one couple that you are really proud of hooking up. We want juicy details. Was he a feared pirate? Was she a princess with troubling mental issues? Cupid: I once got this famous R&B singer to fall in love with this camel-faced guy. I’m not saying I’m good, but he put a ring on it! MV: You mentioned on the phone that if given the chance you’d change your required uniform. Let’s be honest, that diaper is a bit ridiculous, and those wings look

like they have survived a war. We brought a stylist along with us today. Tell her what you need; our treat. Is that cool with you? Cupid: Cool! I’d like my wings bleached with some silver tips - you know, feather bling. I’d also like black leather everything. Think motorcycle rider meets love bandit. Think crossbow instead of this cute lil’ bow and arrow so people will listen when I say, “Hey, you’re in love dummies! Go make babies!” MV: We wish you luck, man. It sounds like your life is rougher than we thought it was. Can you promise to make just one change this year to make yourself happier? Any idea what that change would be? Maybe adding a Mrs. Cupid? Maybe buying a fancy new carriage or sweet new Greek love den? Cupid: A condo in Hawaii would be nice and maybe I’ll look into some part-time help. I especially need help when everybody gets desperate in February. I mean, love should be all year and not just one day a year. I’m not angry, but sometimes I just want to look at people I shoot and say, “Pick it up, people! Get off your phones!”

Who’s in love out there? I got the old arrow to the bottom almost two years ago, and I’m still all goofy over the same pretty lady that jumped in to save me from bleeding to death. Nice girl. Really hope she sticks around! Learn more about Cupid and his ways later in this issue. I had a chat with him. He’s grumpier and more sarcastic than you might think. Actually, he’s a lot like me if I was really into wearing diapers. So it is February, but that doesn’t mean that all there is to talk about is the silly holiday in the middle of the month. The last thing I will say about the holiday is to recommend that you buy your sugary treats, shining jewels, fragrant flowers, and recycled cards with mushy notes from local shops. They need you. Support them. Several years ago when I started writing in Modesto, I was interested in finding famous people around town or those that have left here to become stars. This is why my column is called FamousView. It makes sense I suppose. Last month was interesting for Modesto’s celebs. Jeremy Renner made a fool out of himself at the Golden Globes with a comment on Jennifer Lopez’s “golden globes”, George Lucas released his latest project, “Strange Magic” to theatres to attract families, and Timothy Olyphant fired up his horse for the last season of his hit cable show, “Justified.” Think about all of that. These guys became rich and famous from right here in our farm town. You might wonder who could be next to find a bigger stage and brighter spotlight. I have my money on the amazing Francesca Bavaro. She won the 2011 run of Valley’s Got Talent and she will open for the famed group 2CELLOS at the Gallo Center on March 19th. Sadly, the show is sold out. Let’s hope that one of the ticket holders is a producer looking for the “next big thing”. I’m confident that Bavaro has the chops to make it work. Enjoy the month of February. Do the sappy love thing, try a restaurant that you’ve never tried before, get to a Reggae show if you re-

ART
For the love of Art. by Jim Christiansen
Valentine’s Day month opens with notice from the Stanislaus County Artists Open Studio, there will be 65 Artists in the 2015 Event. Modesto View is a sponsor of the event that features local artists in a variety of media, on display, and working demonstrations in studios around the county. The Map booklet, with artists statements and art sampling will go on sale March 1. Price is $10. This includes admission to all studios in the self-guided tour with map. Students 18 and under get in free if accompanied by map holder. A preview show will be held at Gallo Center April 17 & 18, in conjunction with Modesto Symphony concert events. Open Studio goes beyond the usual gallery show or Art Walk. Many of the sites are the actual work spaces of the artists, with access to full portfolios and works you don’t always see in shows or gallery display. It’s a good day to ask questions, get to know the artists, and pick up some tips on creating art. www.stanislausaos.wordpress.com January’s Art Walk was chilly, but the action was hot at Mistlin Gallery, as Central West Ballet dancers performed in the environment of the CCAA New Members Show. With the Art Show as a backdrop, the Ballet troupe performed in various dancer combinations, and challenged audience members to come up and learn a few steps. I think this was a great collaboration between arts nonprofits, and hope to see more of this sort out of the mold thinking in future art walks. I attended Merced Art Hop on Saturday, where their signature dance troupe and flash mobs were missing, but DJs and light shows on downtown
business walls provided the sort of Arts Action that make their quarterly Art Night a real multimedia exploration. Don Hall’s “Selfies in the style of other artists” show at Chartreuse Muse is up through the month. Chartreuse Muse is still offering life drawing sessions, about every other Saturday, 10 am to 1 pm, $10. Next Art Walk is February 19. Preservation Coffee and Tea is back in action with art by Ryan Tesluk. Modspot in the Old Camera Center is open, next door to the Peer Recovery Art Project Gallery. Barkin Dog Grill always has art up, and the Thursday Night Jam on Third Thursday. Get a map. I get mine at Crow Trading. Carnegie Art Center is hosting “Valley View” featuring art educator’s works of the landscape, activities and events of the Valley. Artists are Dan Kasser, photographer of Lodi and UOP, and Chella, well-known Modesto painter and art instructor. The show runs to March 22. Tracy Art League open for entries to its annual “Expressions” show. Entries due and art receiving is February 7 and 8. Drop off at the Tracy Community Center. Artists Reception is February 13, and the public show is Feb 14 to 20. February 7 is also the Awards and Artists Reception for the Delicato Family Vineyards annual Fine Art Show. Show is up at the Tasting room until then, during regular business hours. I have to go up to the reception, sample some wine, as I have a painting to pick up from the show. Nothing gets to an artist’s heart like your choice to buy your Valentine an original piece of art.

BAR
Happy Firkin Valentine’s Day! By Kate Firkin Serpa Photos by Phil Johnson
Did you freaking see that Modesto ranked #8 on the ten most boring cities in California to live? EIGHTH? Eighth place means no medals, no trophies, no good. Eighth place doesn’t even get us a sympathetic pat on the back. The survey was compounded by the number of bars, clubs, activities, and musical events per capita. Pause. Have you seen the back of this here paper in your hand? PAGES of sh*t to do, events, social functions spanning Oakdale to Turlock. There’s so much going on we have to print it in type so microscopic I have to use the bottom of a pint glass to enlarge it. People, your Valentine’s date is officially the City of Modesto -- and we’re going to make it sexy, spread local love, and the Firkin & Fox is going to help. Firkin manager Devry Thayer is not an often sung hero, nor is he documented in any history books, but, damn, is he an excellent bartender. Not to get too mushy on you, but Devry played cupid for my ongoing relationship with the Fox, because let’s face it -- anyone can pour a drink, but to do it with personality? That is a fine tuned talent. Devry states, “What we sell is ourselves; we sell a great relationship with our customers, we appreciate everyone, and we hope they always come back.” And I do come back, nearly every damn weekend. I just can’t quit you. If you’ve driven downtown, you know Firkin is at the heart; it’s within walking distance to the State, Fat Cat, Gallo Center, and Brenden. Devry states about the Fox’s prime location: “There’s a definite sense of community here because of where we are. We’re a great in-between place for anywhere you’re going.” So what does Firkin have to do with

Modesto being the 8th ‘Most Boring’ place? Absolutely nothing! Aside from their 12+ rotating taps, ample spirit selection, twostoried pub dining, multiple TVs broadcasting all of your teams (including a giant projector for the really important games), and a patio perfect for people watching, the Fox is also delivering constant live music, beer tastings, $8 flights, and exceptional bartenders such as Devry and the lovely Courtney Boyd. Being at the heart of downtown is one thing; generating a beat is a altogether different feat. Nearly every day at Firkin is packed with diners, drinkers, and a brimming patio because the establishment is absolutely everything but boring. Obviously our survey-takers didn’t make it to the Firkin & Fox, or I gather we’d have a quite a different ranking. Lightweight losers. “But, Kate!” Cries Phil. “This is supposed to be a Valentine’s-themed bar review! Put down the Dust Bowl and focus!” Now, I genuinely love Valentine’s Day, but I think it gives most people a case of the barfs because of the stress. I don’t blame you. Non-Firkin restricted time-slot dinner reservation seatings? Non-Firkin jacked-up dinner and drink prices? My sanity and wallet say, “No, thank you.” Sanity and wallet do say “yes,” however, to a no-frills fun atmosphere, excellent bar service via Devry and Courtney and the rest of the Firkin & Fox staff, delicious burgers, beer, and Irish Nachos all delivered at the center of downtown Modesto. Modesto, make this Valentine’s Day anything but boring with some excellent Firkin. 1111 I St., Modesto, CA Www.facebook.com/the-firkin-fox Www.firkinfoxmodesto.com

CHEF
For the Love of Pastas!
FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: See Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month
by Dana Johnson
When I think of “love”, especially in the month of February, I realize there are too many definitions to count. Some make our hearts beat faster, cheeks blush, goofy smiles, passionate racy thoughts, licking of the lips, and unfortunately on occasion love can hurt ya, too. Luckily, when it comes to love, we all have the opportunity to feel more. Which brings me to a prime example: I love Italian food! Yep, I’m not one to fight my feelings; I love pasta, pesto, marinara, antipasto, olive oil, bread, Chianti, and there’s nothing quite like a scoop of spumoni ice cream! Want some instant gratification? Pastas Pronto is an ideal place to start this love affair! It was 1988 in Michoacán, Mexico when Sergio Zamora Sr. set out to “steal his wife!” A common Hispanic phrase that means he was going take Rafaela for his bride, while her father would remind the groom “It’s all YOU now!” (Haha, I like that!) The marriage was consecrated. Eventually the couple moved to the USA . The first restaurant they went to meet family at (20+ years ago) is ironically now the location of their original Pastas Pronto location on H St in Modesto! In November 2014 a second location was opened on Coffee Road. When I drove up to the Pastas Pronto on H, I was pleased to see the charming, old school Italian theme building. Inside was equally warm and quaint. Both restaurants are family owned and operated by the Zamora’s, including their 2 children Sergio ( Jr.) age 23, and Elizabeth who graduated MHS and now attends MJC. Gio, our food server, was wearing a genuine welcoming smile that lasted until we left. She provided outstanding service to all the patrons. Jr. spoiled us silly with plenty of culinary dishes that would have even impressed a top food critic. Jr. has an intact soul, good business sense, and a love for food, family, and people that will keep him in the competitive restaurant business for many years to come. Like me, Jr. is also a big fan of Rockin’ B’s on McHenry! The meal started with bruschetta boast-

ing fresh ribbons of basil, calamari frite golden fried, and the grigliata di polenta that was a first for me. The polenta appetizer was divine; a wild mushroom and white wine cream sauce, topped with gorgonzola & roasted almonds. Three entrées followed. First, penne siracusa made with Italian sausage, onions, peppers, mushrooms, spinach, & a white wine marinara sauce, so tasty. Jr.’s favorite was next, the pollo putiara made with capellini, chicken breast with a spicy white wine sauce, fresh spinach and diced tomatoes, very good! Finished by the pollo di parma made with chicken breast, garlic, spinach, prosciutto, cream sauce topped with mozzarella cheese, served with mashed potatoes & sautéed veggies. It was my hands down favorite; totally Dana~licious! No room for house made crème brulee, bread pudding

from Modesto’s Donut Deli, cannoli, or the classic spumoni, so next time! Feeling full of culinary love! Modesto View’s signature question for Sergio, Jr.; Beatles or Stones? He simply answered “Beatles”. I was baffled & questioned “Why?”. He told me because he’s a laid-back guy, but being a mere 23 years of age, he’s most willing to try the Stones! Pastas Pronto - 2 Locations: Original: 310 H Street Modesto, CA 95351 (209)-521-500 New: 2509 Coffee Road Modesto, CA 95355 (209) 549-2099 Facebook: Pastas Pronto Hours: Mon.-Thurs. 11am to 2:30pm & 4:30pm to 8pm Fri. 11am to 2:30pm & 4:30pm to 9pm Sat. 2-pm to 9pm Sun. 2pm to 8pm
Recipe
Ciabata bread sliced 1/4 thick brush with olive oil and garlic. Grill until crispy on the outside. One roma tomato diced thinly. Mix in 1 tablespoon chopped garlic. Add salt and pepper to taste and mix with olive oil. Best taste if left marinating overnight. Add topping to bread and top with fresh basil and parmesan cheese.

ROCKABILLY
Romantic Rockabilly Top 10 Love Songs & Serenading Your by Jennifer Allsup Partner Rock’n’roll love birds, Johny and June Cash, Buddy and Maria Holly
Music to the ears is always a great start to serenading your partner. Let’s begin with some Buddy Holly “Love Me” & “I’m Going to Love You”, Elvis Presley “All Shook Up”, Wanda Jackson “Rockabilly Fever”, Gene Vincent “Ain’t She Sweet”, Johnny Burnett “Kiss Me”, Carl Perkins “Glad All Over”, Patsy Cline “Hungry For Love”, and lastly, Ritchie Valens “Little Girl”. After asking several friends what their ideal date is, I have compiled the top 10 responses: 1) taking walks in the moonlight, 2) sitting in the back of a 1955 Chevy truck sipping PBRs, 3) a cheap restaurant with greasy food, 4) watching movies at the drive-in, 5) camping out by the river, 6) fishing, 7) sitting by the beach with the bonfire, 8) sharing ice cream sundae banana split (one of my favorites), 9) taking long bicycle rides, 10) bowling. When it comes to dating in this day and age my friends, I have this advice for you: Honesty is much harder to come by so trust your instinct. Your heart may be broken, but your true love still awaits you. Make every moment of laughter count. Love who you are before giving yourself to another. Make the final decisions for yourself. Never cheat. Always be true and love your partner. Have a great time in your adventure because you’ll never know where it might end. Always enjoy the ride. Don’t date anyone from the bar! Love is in the air; not only for couples but for those passionate about life and music. Let’s go back to February 26, 1932: Happy birthday Johnny Cash! May you still rest in peace! In 1968 Carl Perkins composed a little rockabilly didley for Johnny Cash called “Daddy Sang Bass”. Another great rock ‘n roll legend that left this earth too soon, Mr. Buddy Holly. He was killed on February 3, 1959 in a plane crash along with Ritchie Valens, JP Richardson “The Big Bopper” and the pilot only a year and a half into his success. This was “The Day the Music Died”. Holly was a huge influence on the Beatles. Leaving you with my own final thought:

Wow has it been a year already? Seems like only yesterday that Chris Murphy asked me to be the MAMAView columnist. Over the year I have written about the varied and vibrant music scene that is Modesto and the surrounding area. I have spread the word about great bands local and national that were playing at venues from Merced to Stockton. Along the way I got involved behind the scene with the Modesto Area Music Awards and booked about a hundred shows. It has been my privilege to be the liaison between all the great bands and artists that graced the stage of the Brewhouse(2013/14 Venue). It is with heavy heart and sadness to inform that as of now the Brewhouse at Hero’s is no longer in business. If things work out, and I have my fingers crossed, the Brewery and Pub will be back up and going strong once again later this year. Until then I will be out and about supporting the scene and more then likely putting on shows at various venues around the area Metalheads you now have another venue to bang your heads at. Metal Mondays are going strong at Climax and Nothing But Losers(2011 Metal) perform with Hang the Kode and the return of a Metal favorite California Medication kicking things off for the the month. January 7th join 2014 MAMA Winner, A La Lune(Reggae)with one of the best new bands from the last year Terrible Timing(SKA/Punk) with Reggae Legends Jr Ried and Natural Vibrations at the Fat Cat, This will be another great and most likely sold out Reggae Show at the Fat Cat. Pacific Lung 2014 Pop Rock Modesto Area Music Award Winner has just released “Visitor” an LP Record(Vinyl not a CD but you can pick it up for digital download from iTunes, bandcamp, Amazon..) and it is quite amazing. “Visitor” is a Psychedelic-Pop Rock laced album with influences ranging from The Beatles to Pink Floyd with hints of Miles Davis, Bowie and Radiohead. They celebrated with friends at a packed Deva’s on January 16th and I had to pick up a copy for myself and suggest

you do yourself a favor and pick up a copy. Nothing beats the warmth of vinyl playing especially when it is from such a great local band featuring members of A La Lune(2014 MAMA Reggae Winner), 17Ten(2014 Metal Mamanee.) You can catch Pacific Lung at the 207 in downtown Stockton on March 7th and performing live on KCSS(date to be announced.) Jimmie Menezes(2014 Comedy) and I are working on expanding two comedy brands the Brew Ha Ha and Gold Rush Comedy currently happening at the Brewhouse and Gypsy Shack(Jamestown) respectively. Look for the Brew Ha Ha expanding out to Tioga Sequoia in Fresno and Gold Rush Comedy at the Murphy Theater and Blackwater Cafe. The greater 209 Comedy landscape is getting bigger and better. Remember every Sunday morning at Cafe Deva live music to get you going, so enjoy a bite to eat and a cup of coffee while listening to some great homegrown tunes. Sunday Nights at the Queen Bean you can find tomorrows MAMA winners today with the Queen Bean Open Mic(2013 Small Event) always something different and someone
new. If you have not been to the fabulous State Theatre in awhile do yourself a favor and stop in, they have a brand new state of the art digital projector and marquee out front. Each year the MAMA Awards are hosted at the state and it is one of the gems of the Central Valley. Middagh Goodwin beathappymusic@aol.com

COFFEE
From Plantation to Cup by Brandilyn Brown
When you’re sipping your delicious morn-
ing “wakey juice” do you ever wonder how it got there? I met with Don Palazzo, who owns Clayton’s Coffee Roasters, to ask him all about it. All coffee is grown near the equator (in places like Brazil, Indonesia, Guatemala, Ethiopia, and Hawaii), and shipped everywhere else in the world. (Switzerland and Germany are the only countries that create decaf coffee, but that is another article altogether!) Did you know coffee is actually fruit? It grows year-round, so it needs to be harvested by hand when the individual fruits are ripe. Once plucked, they are taken to have the fruit removed, which tastes similar to a cranberry. Then the membrane that surrounds the bean is removed, leaving the green, raw beans to be bagged and shipped off to a roaster. That’s where Clayton’s comes in. Don roasts in a very traditional way. His grandmother, Virginia Palazzo, left Italy to work on a
coffee plantation in Brazil. When she returned to Italy later she brought roasting and brewing methods back with her, and bestowed her passion upon Don. Don uses an oven, and pours the beans into the drum, where they are heated to around 440-degrees. The first step of the process is called endothermic. During that phase the bean is soaking up heat. The water and oil inside the bean steams the bean, and it puffs up a little bit like a puff pastry. Then the beans start to make noises that sound like a bowl of Rice Krispies, and that is the sound of the dried membranes popping off. Then phase two starts, which is called exothermic. At that point, the sugars in the bean start to caramelize and the oils begin to seep out, and it smells like baking bread. Depending on how long the beans are in exothermic phase gives you the degree of roast you want. The darker the bean, the less sugar and oils are in it. Lastly, the beans need to cool. Though
roasting is not rocket science, it does engage all five senses. Unless you want to hone your skills and make a deep connection with your beans, it’s best to leave roasting to the experts. Beans from Africa are going to taste more floral, and beans from Hawaii and Ethiopia are going to have heavier hints of cocoa.
Go S on or a !
Arabica beans are rare, since they can only be grown in the highest altitudes where the air is densely moist. Nothing smells (or tastes!) better than freshly roasted coffee beans. Don, who is also an avid Beatles fan, can make you any special roast you need for your mug, so please stop by and tell him what your favorite roast is. Coffee isn’t just about a jolt to get you going, it’s a precious accessory in making memories with loved ones, fuels you in your travels and it silently supports you while you study or plan the next chapter in your life. Sip on, friends. Clayton’s Coffee and Tea 502 Tenth Street, Modesto 209.576.1120 claytoncoffee.com

UNPLUGGED Valley Roots...
An Arc Of Time And Heart Long dirt roads connecting small towns;
The central valley is rich in musical talent and some of the most hard working musicians, singers and songwriters are women. It only makes sense that the Northern California Women’s Music Festival would be created. The 2014 events were fantastic and showcased a wide range of talent, raised money for Haven Women’s Center and set the stage to grow in 2015. On February 6th, the first fundraising concert for the 2015 Northern California Women’s Music Festival (October 23 & 24 at the State Theatre) will feature local players Francesca Bavaro, Randy Mandy,
Bethany Joseph and others, as well as visual art and more. 5-10 PM at Cafe Deva, 1202 J St. $10 admission. Please put this on your calendar. The fabulous women of the Northern California’s Women Music Festival presented a check for $500 to the Haven Women’s Center on 13th Street. Proceeds were from the Women’s Music Festival at Prospect Theater in 2014. You can learn more about the festival and how to get involved at http://northerncaliforniawomensmusicfestival.com/

their main streets three blocks long; a mix of horse-drawn wagons and Model A trucks creeping along the street, leaving trails of low little clouds of throat-clogging dust. That was the Central Valley in the Thirties and Forties. Add a moderate amount of pavement and take away a few horses, and the Valley was still much the same; its broiling summer climate in a pre-air-conditioned era, with long dank winters fending off all but the most hardy of folk, or at least the most desperate. Taverns and road houses dotted the sparse country, providing Saturday night entertainment for the region’s numerous ranch and farm hands. String bands were the norm early in the twentieth century, with the arrival of swing music. By the Depression, destitute migrants, Okies and Arkies, were flooding into the state, bringing with them new fiddlers and singers who played the old music with upbeat tempos. Soon the honky-tonks were jumping to raucous bands like the Farmer Boys and the Maddox Brothers with Sister Rose, all pre-cursing rockabilly. The infectious, hard-driving rhythm of these and like bands, and later their Bakersfield country kin, were a musical contagion spreading across the continent. That musical heritage is not relegated to the museum; it is alive and robust today. Homegrown Valley bands, be they rockabilly, country or folk, usually reflect the themes borne by the people leading hard lives in a hard place. One such band is Red Dog Ash - a self-professed bluegrass band, their lyrics evoking comparisons to Dylan, Woody Guthrie, and the writings of John Muir. RDA has begun a concert series staged at the West Side Theatre in Newman, a beautifully restored art deco movie house with cabaret seating, a bar, colorful neon lights and a location that is reminiscent of a small Texas town in 1948! Every show opens with RDA followed by a main act, usually a wellknown band from outside the Valley. This year’s series was kicked off by Front Country, an award-winning band from San Francisco that has played at Rocky Grass and the Father’s Day Festival among their many ap-
by Marcos Alvira pearances at prestigious national venues. The next show on Saturday, February 14, will feature AJ Lee, a teenage sensation from the farthest northern reaches of our own Valley. At the age of 17, she has received recognition across the country and Mother Jones Magazine has posited that she may be the next Alison Krauss. Playing mandolin and guitar on stage with her band, she croons melodies and stories that belie her age. She eschews writing about trucks, beer and one-night stands, choosing to compose about broad themes and conjuring ethereal images. For further information about this show or the rest of the Bluegrass series, checkout www.reddogash.com or www.westsidetheatre.org. You can hear a live recording session with AJ and short interviews at www. aissalee.com. A few of this month’s musical happenings: Friday 2/6 - first fundraising concert for the 2015 Northern California Women’s Music Festival (held in October) will feature local players Francesca Bavaro, Randy Mandy, Bethany Joseph and others, as well as visual art and more. 5-10 PM at Cafe Deva, 1202 J St. $10 admission. Sunday 2/8 - Sunday Afternoons At CBS presents the fifth concert of its current season, featuring Grace Lieberman and friends. Grace guides and cajoles audiences with her infectious wit and charm through a landscape of romantic and unrequited love songs, an audience sing-a-long, and a surprise or two. 3 PM at Congregation Beth Shalom, 1705 Sherwood Ave. $20 adults, $15 seniors/students, $7 children. Wednesday 2/11 - Modesto Unplugged presents a night of twangy Texas tunes with two great acts straight from the Lone Star State. Fort Worth-based songwriter Courtney Patton will share her solid Americana and country/rock sounds; and alt-indiecountry outfit The Lonesome Heroes (Austin, TX) will also be with us to rock the house. 7 PM at Barkin’ Dog Grill, 940 11th St. $10 cove

METAL
DEATH METAL IN CERES & THE LOCAL KID DONE by Mike Vanek GOOD...
Greeting and salutations friends and neighbors!! I’m back to spread the word of 209 Area Heavy Metal. This month we have a couple topics that need to be discussed. First of all we need to take a trip to Ceres. Deep in the dark depths of Ceres California, yes a small little spot where for the last several years where extreme music has had a home in the Central Valley. The place is The Workshop the home of Central Valley Death Metal. Ismael Alvarado has been putting on shows for as long as I can remember and he has supported bands that are not mainstream and are as underground as it gets. Teamed with his partner in crime and sound tech Jason Graff these guys have hosted hundreds of hardcore, Punk, Death Metal, Doom, and Grind bands such as The Mentors, The Meat S%&T’s, All Shall Perish, Origin, among many others. The coolest thing about the Workshop is that this is a friendly place that welcomes anyone who wants to enjoy a night of music that you can’t really see anywhere else in this area. Ismael and Jason are also in a local Death Metal band called Aborticide which is THE heaviest band in town!! Please do me a favor and support these guys who have supported our scene for many years... Next is a story of a local boy done good. Kosta Varvatakis is a local guy you see around our scene or around town at Oil Can Henry’s he may have changed your oil.

Happy Valentines Day
Kosta is actually one of the best guitar players in metal today. A former member of former local heavyweights Kranial Damage, Kosta is now lead guitarist for the Bay Area Thrash powerhouse HATRIOT! HATRIOT is fronted by Bay Area Thrash legend Steve ZETRO Souza of Exodus and Legacy (Now known as TESTAMENT) and the band includes his sons Cody and Nick Souza on Bass and Drums. Hatriot has released 2 albums over the past few years and their current release “Dawn of The New Centurian” was heralded as one of the best Thrash Records of 2014. The band has traveled to Europe and has plans to go to South America with thrash legends Heathen!! Hatriot will be coming to town on February 7th at The Other Place 2003 Yosemite Blvd here in Modesto. This will be a rad show and a rare opportunity to see our good friend Kosta shred in his home town!! Before I go I must remind you that our March column will be Titled PRO WRESTLING VIEW!! We will once again cover the local Wrestling company PRO WRESTLING BUSHIDO and the heritage of Pro Wrestling in Modesto and the highlights of local Wrestlers Bobby Hart, Daniel Torch and Savanah Riley and what they have planned when Wrestlmania Weekend comes to Northern California!! If you want to be part of the action you can see al the stars of PWB at the Grape City Con on February 8th in Lodi!! That’s all for me this Month!! As always “KEEP ONE FOOT IN THE GUTTER AND ONE FIST IN THE GOLD!!” MV

DJ Uniqu3

DJ Uniqu3 and check out some of the beats that make our local urban music come to life. Javier Lopez: Tell me about your early beginnings when you got started? DJUniqu3: When I was younger, my friends and I would go out and party on weekends. Since I had the best taste in music, I was usually the designated iPod player. A couple years ago, in 2012, I went over to my friend Daniel’s apartment where I discovered his DJ equipment. It wasn’t advanced equipment, but I’ve always had a desire to learn the art. I asked him to show me the ropes, and he did. From there I invested into my own beginner equipment. Eventually, I saved enough to upgrade all my equipment to what I use today. It was a blessing to learn from someone as skillful as him. JL: Tell me about who you are? DJU: I’m a Modesto man who acknowledges every blessing in his life. I have amazing friends and family who have been with me though all my ups and downs, not only with DJing but life in general. I’m currently in my last semester at Stan State pursuing my degree in Business Administration. From there I will be deciding where I want to attend graduate school. Regardless wherever I go, Modesto will always be my home. JL: What drives you? DJU: My mother. As a single parent she raised my sister and me on her own. She pushes me everyday to be the best I can be in my academics and everyday life. All the confidence I have today is because of her. JL: Tell us about your travels? DJU: I just got back from New York with Def Jam’s artist YG. Had the opportunity to
see the most beautiful sights I never thought I would see. Aside from that, my networking has provided me with the opportunity to go numerous places and meeting people I never thought I’d meet. JL: Who have you graced the stage with? DJU: There have been plenty of concerts I’ve had some part of as a DJ, but the most notable being Summerfest 2014 in Turlock last June with YG as the headliner. I was put on for that through a friend of mine, Chris, who was already a part of YG’s group. Other than that you can say I’ve been a part of shows with artists like Sage The Gemini, Adrian Marcel, Eric Bellinger, MC Magic and others I can’t remember from the top of my head. Out of them all, I actually had the pleasure in meeting YG, MC Magic, Sage The Gemini and Teeflii. I can genuinely say I’m a big fan of Sage, the humblest, most down to earth guy I’ve ever met. He makes you feel like you’ve known him forever. JL: Where will you find you next in 2015. DJU: Where ever God takes me. I owe it all to him and my friends who believe in me more than I do. All this started as a small idea because I was tired of being the guy on the iPod at a party. Looking back today at everything I’ve accomplished in this journey I always tell myself “look what God did”. It was never supposed to get this far but it’s a blessing that it did and that I’m still having fun with it.

AUTHOR “The Loner”
For Borges and the Mudcat.
by Ken White
Weary, he wanders the crucified landscape. Alone. Exotic in his moustache and goatee, floppy straw hat and shoulder-length hair. A haggard, scimitarfaced Bedouin, falcon at hand, red hound curled at his feet. Sipping espresso, smoking Gauloises, and peeling blood oranges. Lean as the flank of a hungry jaguar, his jaded smile is wreathed in rings of smoke. The artist, the aesthete, the author. He, of the tortured soul, speaks in parables, metaphors, and similes; labyrinths, webs, and mazes. Spinning and spiraling crystal blue notes into the air. He seeks solace in vast geographies of ink and infinite constellations of words, not a lover’s arms. A slave to his incomplete and viciously tyrannical visions, his fountain pen relentlessly spins tales in endless black-bound notebooks. With gentle cruelty, he mocks himself, his world, and the others. He dwells in prosaic imagined places named Aleph, Ituzaingo, and Timbuktu. And in that silver valley of the moon where wasted youth and squandered dreams abide. Deep into the night, he conjures images of Lorca and Aranjuez, Borges and Buenos Aires, Balmont and Petersburg, Neruda and Machu Picchu. Cloaked in his anonymity, he is at once the dreamer and the dreamed. He doesn’t need anybody. Or want anything. He is splendid in his enigmatic isolation. Through the years, he has traced shadows of peoples, places, and things in a vain attempt to define, manipulate, and control his world and, ultimately, delay the patient insanity. One day, he discovers that the infinite labyrinth of lines he has been zealously pursuing traces the contours of his own face. At last, he understands there is not a single thing in this existence that time does not wash away or memory alter. Beaten down by the common monotony of the day-to-day, he contemplates falling on the open blade of now. One day, he disappears into his imagination. Never to return.

ALL AGES Hi Everyone
by Leia Johnson
Hopefully your first month of 2015 was spectacular! February is a beautiful time of the year, filled with positive vibes and nice weather. Despite the cold, I want to spend more time outside. Recently I went with my family on the bike trail at Dry Creek. It was a wonderful way to spend two hours; much better than wasting time on my phone. If you are planning on spending time indoors, do it at the wonderful theaters Modesto has to offer. Mamma Mia, a funny play with all ABBA music, is coming back to town! I saw it a few years ago and it blew my mind. And don’t miss this: On February 8th at The State Theatre, come show your support for young musicians at Modesto Music Instruction’s Student Performance. And after the show inspires you to take lessons, go to www.modestomusicinstruction.com and sign up. Also playing at The State is one of my favorite Disney movies. Come see Tarzan for free (WHAT?!!) on February11th.
BLUES
Reward Yourself by Earl Mathews
Hello, everyone! Since you are reading this, Backing bands TBA
The show starts at 4pm. On Valentine’s Day, the 14th, Rockin’ Jump in Modesto is holding an event called “Rockin’ Saturday”. It’s going to be a great time with fun music and delicious food. Of course, you need to make your way to “Third Thursday Art Walk”. It’s a great time to catch up with friends Downtown while appreciating Modesto’s talented artists, young and old. Hope to see you there on the 19th. So whether you are on a trampoline, a bike, or a guitar, I hope to see everyone being active and having a great month in the best town there is!
you are one of the lucky folks who survived the first month of 2015. Congratulations! As a reward to yourself, take some time and get out to some live music this month. Start this month off right by heading over to the Barkin’ Dog on February 4th to see The Urban Pioneers. The Urban Pioneers are have a great old timey folk sound with a kick, not the puck/folk sound that is becoming more common, but a really great up-tempo barn dance kind of kick. They will be sharing the stage with Tiffany Rose and Bethany. If you like great original music and fun, this is the show for you. Then on the 12th in Oakdale at the Cow Track, I will be welcoming a really fun Alt-Rock band from LA called Patrolled By Radar. They are coming off a run of shows opening for the legendary Dave & Phil Alvin. I couldn’t be happier to welcome them to the Track. These fellas are working hard and have been on the road a ton over the last couple of years, both solo and with some of my heroes including Taj Mahal. I really think this is a band that could appeal to any fan of American music.
but, don’t be too surprised if you see me get up and sing a few. On February 21st the amazing Lyle Lovett will be coming to our very own Gallo Center. One of the best musicians to ever come out of Texas and you know that’s saying something. Fourteen albums with no sign of slowing down in his 34th year as an artist. Tickets are still available as of the time of my writing this. Last but not least, on Feb 27th at the West Side Theater in Newman, my band Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame will be doing a rare performance. Not rare as in, we don’t get out much, but rare in that we are going to be playing acoustic and electric sets. This should be a really fun night. If you haven’t ever made it out to the WST this is a great chance to check out this great little jewel of a spot. They really do get a lot of great shows coming through their doors throughout the year. Feb 12th Cow Track Lounge, Patrolled By Radar Feb 27th West Side Theater, Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame

FIT
Lose Weight & Maintain By Efren Martinez
The holidays are over and so are all of the wonderful memories of 2014, including those delicious delectable delights. Or are they? It’s February, and for many Americans we are now being continuously reminded of how much we indulged at the end of the year just by looking at our waistline. The food temptation cards were stacked against us, and during the winter our fitness concerns may have dropped off with so much going on during the holidays. It’s OK. I too scaled back my fitness to less than half to spend and appreciate more time with my family during The Holy Season. I made sure I was able to maintain a healthy weight throughout the holidays and into February 2015. Friends, maintaining your weight throughout the year is easy, and has less to do with your traditional pushups, sit-ups, or even pullups, and more to do with what I like to call “Push-Backs”.
Push-backs are easy to do and don’t take any type of physical strength or endurance to get them done. Just do them like this: every time an excessive amount of food or second helping is pushed in front of you, push it back. Shazam! You’ve just completed your first push-back. Do this several times a day and you’ve saved hundreds of calories from your daily intake. At the end of the week, you’ll have shaved off thousands of unnecessary calories. What also helped me maintain my healthy weight while exercising less during the winter was pinching calories off of each meal. Here’s an example: every morning I eat the same breakfast during the triathlon season which
is 2 eggs on a wheat muffin with honey. During the holidays I cut back over two hundred calories from this meal simply by eating only half of the English muffin, 1 egg white and instead of covering it with honey, I put a little red onion on it. Delicious! This is just a small example of how I pinched calories off my meals in the winter. Honestly, it’s all about maintaining. Friends, regardless if you’re into fitness to compete or to have that bikini bottom, I’m sure our Heavenly Father would prefer if we spent more time practicing discipline through control and moderation with our food and drink instead of spending long hours working out trying to burn off those
guilt-filled calories we just ate at the local fast-food drive-through. Please remember this is 2015 and 70-80% of maintaining and/or losing weight is calorie intake through nutrition and the other 20-30% of it is fitness. Push-back those unusable and unwanted calories that are placed in front of you throughout the day, and pinch out those unnecessary calories at each meal, or even your latte. Doing so will help you as it did me to maintain a healthy weight with less fitness. For most of us you might even lose a great deal of weight depending on how much fitness you incorporate in this ideology. Eat clean, eat healthy, and eat smart portion sizes daily.

ZEN
The Year of the Goat by Mary Layton
Because the Chinese follow the lunar calendar, Chinese New Year will be celebrated on Febraury 19th. Festivities usually go on for 10 days with lots of eating, drinking and noisy firecrackers. Up until Feb 19th,it is still the Year of the Horse, a year of great speed and energy. If you felt like you’ve been running a race all of last year with time just whizzing by you can relax now. 2015 is the Year of the Goat (also known as Sheep). Things will progress at a slower and more gentle pace, allowing time to make peace with oneself as well as others. The goat is supposed to bring out lots of creativity and imagination. Good for the arts and aesthetic ventures. The Goat has been a beloved subject of painters, like Picasso and Chagall. It’s a fascinating animal. The eyes of the goat seem strange because the pupil is not round but oval. Goats are otherworldly and mysterious. I wonder how they perceive the world! With their unusual but elegant looks and strange behavior ( goats like to climb trees) they inspire us to dare go off the beaten path. Come celebrate the Year of the Goat with us! When : Saturday, February 28th, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM Where: Tai Chi Chuan Academy of Modesto Dania Hall, 416 I Street What: Refreshments, Music and Tai Chi demonstrations For more info call (209) 572-4518 visit us on the web at http:\\taichi4modesto.com

BARGAIN
The Simple Joys Words and Photos by Monica Barber
The fog of the day has yet to burn off entirely and there’s a few birds dancing in the trees. The day is fairly grey as Ms. M finds herself writing in Downtown Modesto. A smile crosses my face with the sight of a man and his wife walking their puppy. Every fiber of my being knows that this is one of the joys in life you take in without worrying of trivial things. Life shouldn’t be an expensive treat to enjoy. Here’s a few ways to save a little with those you love this February… An unforgettable evening of music is a lovely way to start your month and help to raise funds and awareness for a cause. On February 6th Café Deva presents A Night to Remember fundraising concert. The event features some of the area’s most celebrated female musicians to raise awareness for the Northern California Women’s Music Festival. Doors open at 5pm and tickets are $10. Lineup includes: Amy Obenski, Francesca Bavaro, Randy Mandy, LoveCore and Ruby Jaye Fradkin among more. Info: www.northerncaliforniawomensmusicfestival.com Sometimes it’s best to let your inner animal run wild. And where else can you do that but in nature? Well if you can’t escape to the natural elements, then head over to the Great Valley Museum. The Museum is newly reopened with great exhibits to discover celebrating wildlife and science. Don’t miss out on Telescope nights with two planetarium showings! The First takes place on February 6th at 7:10pm. Admission is $5 for 12+ and older. http://mjc. edu/instruction/sme/gvm/events.php Good people willing to do their best still need to take a break to enjoy a little fun for Valentines Day. A great diversion whether
you are paired off or single this year check out the Fat Cat’s Stupid Cupid Comedy Night and Valentine’s Day Party. Starting at 10pm you can get enjoy the best party music ranging from Freestyle to Hip Hop and more. And not to worry your memories of this magical evening will be captured by photographers on hand. Tickets are $10. Don’t miss out! http://www.fatcatmodesto. com/
Now and then you want to retreat to the dark recesses of your house for some R&R but there’s not a better, darker place than a movie theater. If it’s been a while since you treated yourself to some eye candy then it’s time to head over out to see a movie at Brenden Theaters. Money shouldn’t be a problem with their matinee rates at $6 every day until 6pm. Don’t miss out and FOCUS in with the new Will Smith comedy premiering on February 27th. Reward yourself!
