Greetings Modesto Friends! Awwww, isn’t February the cutest thing. February is always that time of year when shake

off our January, start to make sure our year is all planned out and it is also time for serious cuteness and endless adorableness. When you think of that song, a “My Favorite Things”, it really does cheer you up, “Raindrops on roses & whiskers on kittens”. When you are down, had a tough day or feeling blue, when you think about the good things in your life, it brings you back and cheers you up. Even Life of Brian says “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”. That is what February is all about to me. The wreckage of failed or unreachable New Year’s resolutions are in the rear view mirror and we are about to spring ahead toward the future. Take time Modesto to find the adorable, the cute, the special and the truly fun things about living in our community. If you have great ideas, tell us so we can help spread the word so more people learn about them. I am counting on you, my ModestoView friends to be the leaders, the helpers and the cheerleaders about things we are doing, need do to and can do. We are a “Can do” group of people. Valentine’s Day is so much more than a night out to dinner or a bouquet of flowers, it is really a reminder to think about doing the little things, making sure people know how much you love them, that simple thank you note, or that extra kiss before you leave to work. Happy Valentine’s day to the girl of my dreams Becky + Chris Forever

February 14. I love the rain. And we are all so very lucky that we have been getting some thumping rain storms and the mountains have the biggest snowpack in 5 year. Not only do we celebrate some drought relief, we can ski. Dare I think it? Spring skiing? That would be fantastic and our farmers are getting much needed relief and our aquifers are filling up again. Let’s hope it keeps going. We love the rain so much we even put a rainy day on the cover of this issue featuring one of Modesto’s most #adorable couple. This is a fast month. Not only is it physically short, but everything is happening so quickly. If you can believe it, Mardi Gras at Tresettis is happening on Feb 6 and the month is loaded with crab feeds and great music events. It is a leap year so we get an extra whole day, but we wrap up the month at the State Theatre for the Academy Awards on the big screen. How do you say “this is all a blur” in 10 different languages. Anyone how does this and sends me the answers, will get a cool ModestoView prize. This month we really think about matters of the heart. We have some dating tips for young lovers, we have fantastic events and contests for couples all over the community and we even take time to talk about heart safety and staying healthy and recognizing the sounds and feelings

of both heart break and heart ache. We want you all to stick around to share more great Modesto area events together. Modesto is filled with fantastic people. This is what makes our community special. We love our Modesto friends and family. We love living here and we love sharing good times and even the bad times if we all have each other to make sure we all have each other’s backs. Modesto is about teamwork, friendship and love, and few people exemplify this like Grace Lieberman. You can meet her on page 14. Our February goal is to: Find the good, Find the interesting, Find the creative, Find the adorable and then celebrate them all together. Let’s make sure the world knows the good stuff. One of the birthplaces of Rock and Roll is gone. With one day’s worth of demolition, the building that gave the world the first beats Rock and Roll was leveled. In the 1940s, the Hillbilly Boogie/Rockabilly slappin’ base sound that would lay down the foundation of Rock and Roll, blasted from the airwaves of KTRB. This music was heard across the land. The power sound of AM radio reached up and down the valley, found its way to records and into the hands of musicians all over the USA. Fred Maddox convinced his family in 1938 to start playing music and started a radio show with his brother Cal and much younger sister Rose. The sounds of Maddox Brothers and Rose would change music forever, inspiring a young bass player in Elvis Presley’s band, Bill Black of the Blue Moon Boys who would record the “first” rock and roll song, That’s Alright Mama”

Modesto shares a spot with Nashville, and Memphis in the birth and history of Rock and Roll and our last physical place where these music legends played their music is now reduced to rubble. Hank Williams performed in this building, Chester Smith broadcast our hillbilly boogie music to the world and the world of music was changed by radio signals from KTRB on Norwegian Avenue. To have a positive future, Modesto needs to celebrate our history. We are one of the birthplaces of Rock and Roll, we are the home of American Graffiti, the birthplaces of George Lucas and the home of the largest winery in the world. Our music created rock and roll, our hometown heroes changed cinema forever and our agriculture companies feed the world. Modesto, we have something to be proud of and we need to make sure we do not forget our history as we lose these physical structures. Speak out to celebrate our history and make sure city leaders know that you think this is important. Save our history.

International Baccalaureate meetings happening in February. One of he leading academic programs will host informational meetings at ModestoView High. ViewCrew members Madison Murphy and Abigail Murphy participated in this rigorous program that delivers a world class education and does an excellent job in preparing students for a top tier college experience. Both girls attended UC Berkeley following graduation and they have reported that they were very well prepared for college with the IB curriculum and study habits while enjoying a good social life and participating in sports. For the Love of Art, buy your Valentine original art from a local artist. Downtown Modesto Third Thursday Art Walk is February 18, so a reminder most of the art walk venues and area galleries feature original art for sale the rest of every month. Next month, look for a new Art Walk map starting in March. March 1 is also first day of Stanislaus Artist Open Studio map booklet sales, your guide and ticket to the Open Studio Weekend April 23 and 24. Maps are $10, and students 18 and under get in Free with a map holder. 75 artists on the map for 2016. The map booklet will be available to purchase at Mistlin Gallery, Carnegie Arts Center, Oakdale Chamber of Commerce and Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau. Other locations will be announced, or buy from a participating artist. Mardi Gras is February 9, and this month I not only have the new bar painting for the February 6 Mardi Gras Party at Tresetti’s, but also three paintings in New Orleans itself at the Degas Gallery on Julia Street. It’s the closest I’ve gotten to spending Mardi Gras there, rather than our annual street celebration on 11th Street. I was contacted by the gallery after posting my art on my facebook page. February 6 is also the Artists Reception and awards ceremonies for Delicato Family Vineyards Art Show. I got honorable mentions for watercolors “Cocktail Cats” and “Vintage Wine Frogs”. Best of Show went to Gerald Boyd, for his pastel “Liam and the Butterfly.” Many of our local artists will have entered the Tracy Art League Expressions Show. Artist Reception is February 12, with the public

Forget the expensive flights across the ocean; Modesto is full of little gems when it comes to romantic get-aways. This year, be different and head over to our own little “izakaya” (translated “stay in sake shop”), Kimoto Sake & Sushi. This Japanese pub is a place you will fall in love with, while your date falls in love with you over your great taste in adult beverages. You will never get bored trying all their different cocktails made with Japanese whiskey and sake. Or drink ‘em straight! (Which is just as delightful!) Why a Japanese pub in Modesto? Because who doesn’t love drinks, sushi, hanging out with people you enjoy, and eating delicious plates of food? The culture is rich in Kimoto, down to the traditional red paper lanterns found in Japanese pubs. While you won’t find the French fries or chicken wings you’re used to at most pubs, what you will find is finger food to drool over, like the uber-delicious bacon wrapped mushrooms and tempura veggies! Owner Brandon Dodge met with us to take us on a taste-bud journey to Japan! Did you know the Japanese went to Scotland and learned to make their whiskey right at the source? We tried a wide array of his amazing cocktails, and our favorites are the Manhatten East (made with Do Good Distillery’s Rye Bourbon, Domaine De Canton, Tyku junmai sak, Peychaud’s bitters with a slice of orange peel) & the Harajuku Fizz (made with Tyku junmai sake, pomegranate liquer, and ginger ale). The perfect amount of dry

with a bit bubbly, this is sure to be your favorite Valentine’s drink! Craft beer is also taking the Japanese pub culture by storm. Try the sampler, it is sure to please! It comes with Shikkoku (a smooth dark lager that can’t quite be called a stout), Coedo Kyara (a not-too-hoppy IPA that even those who dislike IPA’s should enjoy), Shiro (a Hefeweizen with notes of banana), and Coede Beniaka (a light sweet potato beer with hints of vanilla). What do we recommend? A full glass of ice cold Beniaka! Before ending our little excursion into another culture, we asked Brandon if he prefers the Beatles or the Stones. “Stones!” Sorry Beatles fans, maybe next time! With elements of Japanese culture, large TVs for watching sports, a relaxing atmosphere and mouth-watering food like this baby Cthulhu (oh ok, it’s really a grilled squid!), you are sure to have a great izakaya experience right here in your own city. We will certainly be back for more Beniaka, and to try some items on the new menu like the Sriracha honey chicken bites and fried oreos. We hope to catch you there!

month. Yes, it’s perfectly acceptable for me to celebrate all month long! This means raising my glass and my fork on numerous occasions! Lucky for us, Modesto has a new restaurant, Ralston’s Goat! The menu is highlighted by a genuine French chef! Bonjour and beinvenue to Chef Laurent Katgely! From the moment we met, I could see a twinkle in his eyes and a warm smile upon his face when we talked about our love of food. Chef Laurent comes to us from Grenovie French Alps and I do believe he’s staying! He shared with me the importance to “Just feed other people. The fun is the first thing- everything else comes later.” I concur! Curious, Ralston’s Goat, where did that name derive from? Owners, Mike Shelton, Chelsea and Paul Bavarro must have done some stimulating brainstorming! Mike explained an interesting fact with me that at one time Modesto could’ve been named Ralston. So that made sense, but I don’t see any goats running around Modesto! Lol, Mike said “Nobody has Modesto’s goat!” Aaaah the connection was made and Ralston’s Goat came to life! I’ve enjoyed 2 visits to Ralston’s Goat. The first one was with Modesto View’s Rockabilly writer, Jennifer Allsup. She was already a huge fan of the menu and the folks directly involved with opening this welcome establishment to downtown Modesto. I can’t seem to get enough of her fabulous company! We started with the delightful bartender, Darlan Kamerdula! She introduced us to her specialty cocktails including her margarita, her version of an old fashioned, and an aperitivo, Aperol spritz (Aperol is based on a selection of herbs & roots) which is a most popular happy hour cocktail in Italy. I also brought a bottle of wine in to share and welcome the new business. Lots of reasons to cheers! What a tasty thrill when the food parade started to come to our table! The squash soup was smooth and nicely flavored. The beet salad had genuine eye appeal and each bite matched the appeal. Skeptical about my first time to try chicken and waffles, I found the waffle prepared golden good! And the fried chicken moist and tasty, but together it must be an acquired taste that Jen has because she loved it! Separate them & I’ll devour them both! Then came the no-noodle lasagna. Again, not sure how my taste buds would react, but OMG so Dana-licious, I would order this every time! Jen

The other day someone came into my bar, and asked me a question. This was something I hear very often, and it’s a question I’m sure that every bartender, and anyone in the beverage industry have heard at one time or another. So, I will answer this to the best of my knowledge. I was asked, “What’s good here?” When you’re out on the town, and having drinks, you have to consider where you’re at to determine what may be good at any particular establishment. For instance, I work at a place that specializes in American Whiskey, and craft beer. So, we take a little more pride in those types of drinks at my bar. In that case, as a bartender I may suggest a nicely aged bourbon, or a malty stout. Although that could be the correct answer in that circumstance, it usually is not. When that question comes up, the customer usually wants to try something new that they may not have tried elsewhere. So, what’s a bartender to do? We can show our guests a cocktail menu, and maybe give a few drink options. But, if you want a really good cocktail you’re going to have to give your bartender some type of guidance as to what you prefer. With all of the liquor, mixers, and tools behind the bar; we can make what seems to be an infinite amount of different types of cocktails. The drink possibilities are endless. So, you have highballs, coffee drinks, martinis, shooters, smashes, sours, tropical drinks, and the list goes on. Most bars, and restaurants around this area can cater to those types of cocktails. So, think about what style of drink you’re in the mood for, consider what type of establishment you’re at, and ask for a really good (-----------------) So the answer to the question really depends on what each individual person considers to be good.

Since moving to California just over a year ago, my husband Evan and I have discovered some wonderful local music organizations to become part of. One of those groups is the Gottschalk Music Center Concert Band (GMCCB) conducted by Matt Cover and Ulices Chavez. In this group, Evan plays trumpet and I play bass clarinet. The GMCCB has an upcoming concert on Sunday, February 28th at Ripon High School’s Multipurpose Room in Ripon. The concert will start at 2pm and will feature piano soloist John Hildebrandt performing ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ by George Gershwin. In a nutshell, the Ripon Arts League undertook the goal of purchasing a baby grand piano for their community and were successful. It will be housed at the Ripon High School multipurpose room and used for the Ripon Arts League annual concert series. I also happen to be the Assistant Conductor of a unique and amazing orchestra in Oakland, California. The Community Women’s Orchestra (CWO) was founded as a community adjunct to the professional Women’s Philharmonic. Although the Women’s Philharmonic disbanded in 2004, the CWO continues to grow and flourish as an independent organization. In the past 31 years it has grown from the original six-member ensemble to more than sixty female members. The Community Women’s Orchestra is preparing a concert in celebration of International Women’s Day. When I think of all the amazing musicians we have had the privilege to meet and work with, there is one that stands out in my mind.

Matthew Cover, conductor of the Gottschalk Music Center Concert Band for this Rhapsody in Blue concert in Ripon, grew up in Modesto and has degrees in Performance, Music Education, and Conducting from Modesto Junior College, California State University East Bay, and the University of Michigan. In addition to now teaching at Modesto High, and has taught at Davis High School, Hickman School Middle and Charter Schools, and the Modesto Junior College. At Modesto High School, Mr. Cover teaches Band, Orchestra, Guitar, and a Musical Theatre class. He also has Marching Band, Pep Band, Color Guard, and Winter Percussion programs running year-round. During the summer he is the Assistant Conductor and Manager for the Modesto Band of Stanislaus County - or MoBand. He has also been co-directing the Gottschalk Music Center Concert Band, with Ulices Chavez, for several years now. They have performed all over California and even at Carnegie Hall. When not conducting, Mr. Cover is

a woodwind specialist. His primary instrument is the clarinet but is proficient in performing on all woodwinds. His involvement in the music community is exemplary and if you have not had a chance to work with him in a community production, or have a student in one of his music classes, you are missing out!

Senior Housing taking shape in Downtown Modesto By Barrett Lipomi

When I see a new construction fence go up around town, I always find myself very curious about what is going on. Too often lately I find myself worrying what will become of that site. I think to myself, I hope it’s not another big box drugstore or chain restaurant. So last spring I noticed a construction fence going up around the former park on 17th and G Streets and found myself feeling this same curiosity. I was happy to find out, however, that the project on that site wasn’t another discount big box retailer, but rather was a new affordable senior housing complex. Modesto hasn’t seen a housing project in downtown for decades, so I was very excited to see this becoming a reality. The project, managed by Beacon Communities, is called Tower Park, giving a nod to the history of the site which formerly housed a large iconic water tower. The L-shaped building sits right up against the sidewalk on both street frontages freeing up the back portion of the lot for parking and any outdoor areas. The three story structure is now nearing completion on the exterior. The design of the building is contem-

porary, yet also incorporates some traditional detailing and materials. We often judge architecture by what we see of the materials and what we see on the surface. As such, this building has very familiar surface materials for most of us as it is clad with stucco, tile, and horizontal siding. What often isn’t discussed is the function, context, and proportions of buildings. In multistory apartment projects like this with identical stacked floor plates it is always a challenge how to articulate a large blank wall with equally spaced windows on each floor. The architect in this case incorporated full height pilasters that pop out from the building and cant outward towards the street at when they reach the top of the structure. These vertical elements draw the eye upward and also provide rhythm to the façade. Although I would have preferred the building be painted the color scheme shown on the

Tower Park website, it does still feature a five color paint scheme that helps to further break up the massing. This design is certainly not the progressive architecture that I would personally prefer to see, but I understand the budgetary restrictions and limitations that go along with a project of this type. So given this context, I think it is well executed project. I’m still holding out hope for modern lofts to rise up within our downtown core, however this project is a positive addition to our downtown and a step in the right direction.

Amazing Start to the New Year I hope everyone is having an amazing start to the New Year? Typically, I like to chat about the upcoming bands or even throw a little Rockabilly history your way. In the past years I have attended many,many shows and thrown numerous shows as well. In this process of being as supportive as I can. I always seem to overlook those with many talents in many different genres and backgrounds of what makes their passion in music so incredible. There is one man in particular that I seen perform with so many other talented folks around town. You can catch walking the streets of downtown, having coffee with friends at Preservation. A friendly man who’s never ceases to amaze, especially being self taught. Mr. Ray Vazira born and raised in Iran. Ray’s family gathering were always filled with music. So, When Ray moved here in the 8th grade he decided he was going to teach himself the drums. Putting a pair of earphones and listening to the HAWK, Ray began his own journey into the music wonderland. Around, 2003/2004 Ray met Jacob Canada Stand up Bass Man) and Chandler Pratt (guitar). They started out as Fat Skeleton, just a simple little jam band. This grew into something more and as time went on, switching up some musicians took Ray to another level of music. He met a man with the spiritedness of African World Music, Mr. Lumemba. Ray took a liking to being a hand percussionist. In 2006/2007 he was on another expedition with more of a musical change, thanks to his friend Jacob Canada. Whom finally was able to convince Ray to attend Strawberry Music Festival. This opened up yet another avenue of music. Singing the gospel and folk music in the wilderness, I do believe at the point Ray was hooked. Ray met a Dave Hanley and made a great musical connection. Ray was then able to travel with Dave to Oregon. This is where Ray got his very first paying gig. The Panhandlers started introducing Ray to Cole Thomason and Joey along old friends gathered as well Jacob and Chandler. It was so much fun playing with all these talented local musicians. Which brings us to 2008, Ray met Irene Machillo which formed the band LoveCore. This was a name Irene loved and went by. Irene and Ray would sit on the porch at the house on

Orange, wail, strum and create. At this time Ray was switching back and forth between his first love drums to the Uke. Then along came Paul Muncy, Amanda Wood and Adria Bray. Of course, unpretentious as these musicians are, they all sound astonishing! Irene shortly, came to the conclusion that LoveCore and the House of Orange was a bit too much. So then there became two bands. With all this being said, Ray loves being in multiple bands. This takes us to his meetup with Mr. Rob Hill. Ray, really enjoys the sound of Rob Hill’s voice, a Joe Cocker if you will, kind of style. With so many musical groups knicked into his belt, they have all played for me at one time or another. YAY for me!! As the years past his trek on that music highway he met one of our other local talents. Ms. Tiffany Rose DeLaCruz. Ray has been stepping in and thrown down some spectacular riffs to Tiffany’s soul driven country /rockabilly style. Along with other like Amie Alton and Tony Trevino. It is never to late to expand your musical genres and just ROCK! Always practicing, always having the passion for music Ray has taken his music to the next level. He has just opened his own musicians’ place called Ray’s Workshop. With the vision of making this workshop interactive, where bands can rehearse, come in and just jam. Become a member of the workshop. Ray has two Ukes, 2 drum sets, bass guitars, guitars, 88 keyed weighted keyboard and amps. Band rehearsals are evenings only and lessons from Ray are from 4-8pm, unless otherwise prior arrangements have been met. Located right in front of Tangled T’s on Downey Ave and Kimble ,Modesto Ca. INTER Grace Lieberman - Modesto’s Sweetheart by Chris Murphy

No one showcases love like “Modesto’s Performer” Grace Lieberman. Eighty-six years old and going strong, Grace, a caregiver and teacher by profession, is a multi-faceted performer, singer, motivator and at the core, a wonderful friend. Grace lives to inspire others to be great, to excel and to dream. She has helped and mentored so many people in all generations and she has tirelessly worked to support the arts in Modesto for over 40 years. She shines every time she is on stage. One of the annual highlights of each year is the Grace Lieberman Valentine’s Showcase that will be presented at Congregation Beth Shalom on Valentine’s Day, February 14. Grace was born in Rhode Island and grew up in Providence. Her father was a chauffeur for Mr. Cluett, the owner of Arrow Shirts and he filled Grace with ideas and a desire to help others. She married Dr. Myron Lieberman who hired her at the College of Rhode Island after an interview question, “Do you smoke?”. She said “No” and was hired immediately. Ultimately, they moved to Modesto by way of Beverly Hills and USC, as Myron was a enthusiastic tennis player wanted to play against Fritz Earle. Grace earned her degree in teaching at State University of New York at New Paltz then as an Asst. Professor at the College of Rhode Island. She earned her Masters at Stanford. She has one daughter living in Texas and she has two granddaughters. Modesto is very lucky that the Liebermans found Modesto to be home. She has been honored with many awards and served as the Executive Director of the Stanislaus Arts Council, the Culture Commission and along with her good friend Marie Gallo, helped push for the creation Gallo Performing Arts Center. Dr. Lieberman has since passed away, and today she is a regular inspirational speaker for a variety of organizations and is a soloist for a few symphonies. But her talents

as a performer and champion for the arts put Grace in a league of her own, and I am so honored to have been her friend for many years. When you talk with Grace, the conversation goes everywhere so we tried to narrow it down. We asked Grace a couple of key questions: MV: What was your first performing experience? GL: Don Vance urged me to try out and my very first role was in Little Mary Sunshine at the Denair Gaslamp Theatre. Soon after, I auditioned for Man of LaMancha, one of my favorite musicals ever. I went to audition for the role of Aldonza. Despite an initial ambivalence by Buck Townsend, Dennis Clark and Paul Tischer were sure that I was their Aldonza. MV: What is your favorite role you have played / sang to. Fraulein Schneider in Cabaret. I sang the lyrics “Go on; tell me, I will listen. What would you do? If you were me?” It is a magical song from a really complex character. MV: You were celebrated with a MAMA Lifetime Award in 2003. What did it mean to you to have the community support and a presentation by Marie Gallo? GL: “I carried three loads of red roses back to my house after the MAMAs. Marie and all of her friends hand delivered roses to the stage while “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” played. It was such a special night and I felt so loved by my friends and colleagues.

MV: What do you think that Modesto needs to do to take our arts community to the next level? GL: We need to encourage Modesto to discover the variety of arts. Poetry, Folk Art and Fine Arts all need to be explored and encouraged. More people need to attend the less popular events like the Poetry Readings. We need to teach poetry to kids and have them do it in front of people. MV: Who have been your role models and mentors? GL: Donald Vance has been one of my greatest friends. He got me to do my first role. We sang in the MasterSingers and did many shows together. He really encouraged me to do more. For by 54th birthday, he did my will. (She laughs.) Sandor Salgo, maestro for the Modesto Symphony in the ‘70s gave me the role of Queen Of Sheba in Soloman after hearing me sing only four bars. MV: Since you are only 86 years young, what is your dream role to play? GL: I have played every roll I wanted to play. I have been lucky enough do Man of LaMancha 3 times and the Full Monty 66 times! MV: What is it that makes you keep going? GL: Baroque music, singing in the symphony chorus. I love singing alto in the Modesto Symphony Chorus. I love sharing my inspiration with others. I love collecting inspirational quotes, and I try to share inspiration with

others. MV: What are you looking forward to? GL: I am so excited to be cast in Modesto Performing Arts “Bye Bye Birdie” this summer. At 86, I still have it. MV: How special is the Valentine’s show that you do every year and why? GL: This is the feel good show of the year. We have so many fantastic performers and the theme of the day is “Celebrate yourselves and have fun”. Many of my friends will be performing including Dr. Joe Wigget, Claudia Ridgway and will even feature a high tea and tasty treats, wine and chocolate. You shouldn’t miss it. MV: I know you love quotes and carry around a few, what is your favorite?; GL: From Sister Corita Kent, who said in ’67, “Be, of Love (A little) More Careful, Than Of Everything.” MV: And our signature question, Beatles or Stones? GL: Beatles of course. I have all the Beatles records and I treasure my White Album. I have all of my old records. I have over 2700 records. Now you know why we love Grace, Modesto’s Sweetheart.

Though the holiday festivities are coming to an end, the winter snow is here for a while. Dodge Ridge Ski Resort in Pinecrest will likely be open through April. A classic family resort, Dodge Ridge is a great place to learn to ski or Snowboard. (But extreme shredders like it too!). Dodge has a variety of classes to accommodate any skill or age. Mom and dad can sign up the kids for a lesson and go hit the slopes, or take a lesson themselves to take their own skiing to a new level. Classes are available for groups or as private lessons. I think it is important to showcase the bands I think are a shining beacon of hope for our scene. For the next few months I will showcase a few bands in our scene a few at a time with more coming Next Month. 1. Nothing But Losers. NBL is a band that has evolved many times over the years and has a fascinating story. This band is a close family unit that appreciates other bands in the scene and new bands that they meet here, or while on the road playing in other cities. This current lineup is the strongest it has ever been adding former Brutal Innocence drummer Dave “LUNCHBOX” Ussery on Percussion/Drums. Most recently they have raised the bar when it comes to image, showmanship and all out brutality with a savage live show, and hopefully a album in the near future. When I think of Modesto Metal, I think of Nothing But Losers

years ago and attacking the local scene they lost 2 members at what seemed to be the height of their popularity, but original members Stephani and Mari didn’t give up, they totally rebuilt the band and came back better than ever!! These guys are definitely a band to go out and see if you haven’t already!! 3. Sworn To The Black Sworn is one of the heaviest bands metal bands Modesto has to provide!! With mind-blowing musicianship and riffs to match a seasoned vet in Kirk Salazar who has played in a few of the best bands in town at one point like And All Was Lost and Epidemia along with Sworn drummer Pelon. Pelon was also in SEIP with Sworn guitarist Jared Davis who were also a legendary band in our scene. This past year they were joined by former Reclaim and Conquer guitarist Tomas Peinthor and longtime 209 area bassist who has played in bands such Bind and Better Left Unsaid. These guys have become a brutal metal band that borders the line of death metal but are by far one of the heaviest and sickest bands in town and are one of the most sought after bands in the 209 area!! 4. 17Ten The final band I have for you this month is the band that brings the party to every show they play. 17Ten is throwback to old school hip hop influenced metal with sick and rhythmic vocals that keep the energy in the room at a full tilt. Anchored by 209 metal

legend Captain Chuck Gaither tied together by vocalists Joe Young, KC Agar and Sektor209’s Jr. Guzman who bring excitement and energy to the crowd and they add something different to every show!! These guys are all cool guys and their level of energy was captured on cd this last year when they released they freshman release entitled S**t eating Grin. This cd is the perfect cd to listen to while at work or doing something ya really don’t like because it is a constant source of high-energy knowledge and it totally rocks!! As a new author, I always enjoyed reading from a young age. I had entered several poetry contest in the pass, that were published. Reading many genres, I found many great authors and their books. Reading “Twilight” got me thinking about writing my own story. It started out as fun for me, but later when I told my sister and oldest son, they convinced me to take it further. When I finally finished the manuscript, my son paid to publish “Trinity” then later “Horizon”, and the saga continues in the last book of the trilogy, “Serenity”, which will be out later this year. I continue to love reading and writing, it has now become my passion.

When you live in a small town where Legends are told, you begin to question yourself. Can they possibly be true? In one town named Ketra, such stories were told from generation to generation traveling into the minds of citizens that had feared the legend to be true. One cozy home, the Starr residence, lives Elizabeth and her mother. They didn’t believe the stories. It was summer vacation when their class mates, Danny and Jared, had plans to hike Teak Forks Trail, and invited Lizzy and Sara to join them. No one had hiked the old trail for a long time due to mysterious deaths. Hope you all survived the Holidaze and Nappy New Years; I stayed home and waited for the ball to drop. I found out in the morning that it had dropped after I fell asleep. Okay on to the New Year with resolutions and keeping things rolling, I am excited about another venue complete with live music in the downtown. Café’ Urbano in the location behind Gallo Center formerly of Clayton’s Restaurant has their Cabaret license so is ready to roll with live music! I did Blue Monday Party in the intimate nightclub setting for 7 years every Monday and I would like to invite those that attended and newcomers to come back for some great music. We will be doing Blue Monday Party Feb 8th at Barkin Dog to help get the word out to come out Friday Feb 12th for a grand opening with live music at Café’ Urbano, hosting from 7 to 10:00 PM will be some of the musicians from Ultra lounge with some special guest play-

BLUES the Twisted Pig and catch Patty Davis. Now on the 17th, it’s the don’t-miss-show of the month. We have Charlie Musselwhite and the North Mississippi Allstars at the Gallo Center. Charlie Musselwhite’s career goes all the way back to the heyday of Chicago Blues. He was one of the first white performers to be accepted by the black artists and has the resume to prove it. As for the North Mississippi Allstars: if you love blues or rock or specifically hill country blues this is the band for you. Their music is all about feeling, groove and dynamics. They come from a part of the country where this music is bread and butter and they love bread and butter. I mean, I can’t say enough about how much this stuff speaks to me. FIT Running in El Nino by Efren Martinez When you look at 38 year old Marla Vargus, you see a young, attractive and healthy woman. Marla’s been a runner for over 16 years. She runs three to four times a week averaging around 15 miles. According to Marla, she also eats right most of the time and takes pride in living a healthy lifestyle. Although Marla doesn’t smoke nor is she obese, she still had a heart attack which caused her to fall and in the processes got pretty bruised up. So after her heart attack you can see why many of us were dumbfounded. Thankfully she’s ok. According to her doctor, Marla had a piece of plaque that broke off from an 80% clogged artery that stopped her blood flow. Is eating right, exercise and living a healthy lifestyle enough to keep you from having a heat attack, especially at such a young age? Most would say yes, but the truth of the matter is that there are a great deal of variables in each person’s genetic makeup and the lifestyle one lived in their adolescent life. Since we all know the dangers of second hand smoke, I asked Marla, “are there any smokers in your household and or where you raised by parents who smoked, had a job that required you to be in a smokers environment. Marla; “My dad smoked around me when I was a child until I was a teenager both in the car and in the home. I spent a lot of time with him so I was around smoke a lot. I wasn’t around any smokers after I was a teenager.” Only God knows why this build-up of plaque in her artery happened, perhaps it might be part of her genetic makeup or even heredity such as high or low blood pressure can be. My other thought that came to

mind was that it’s well known that mostly all endurance runners generally have slightly enlarged hearts. Some more than others. Why? The heart is actuality a muscular organ, in my opinion it’s the most important muscle in our body and it’s the one that keeps us alive. It’s like this, when you exercise your biceps and triceps they get larger. The same thing happens to an extent with your heart when you’re an endurance runner. This is why some endurance runners have had heart attacks during a run with the cause generally being from an over enlarged heart, a product of so many years of endurance running. But wait, Marla isn’t an endurance runner, she actually prefers short trail runs. Friends, Marla isn’t really any different from most of us who are recreational runners. Like you, she has her annual checkups and lives a healthy lifestyle most of the time. My advice, if you train regularly, always listen to your body. Your body will let you know most of the time if something isn’t right. Listen and look for these signs, a shortness of breath, dizziness, a lack of speed or endurance from your regular workouts. I’d also invite you to keep a fitness journal like I do. Record the date, your time, distance and how your training session went and how you felt. At the end of the month, study it. If you see any kind of anomalies in it and your struggling to keep up your fitness for no apparent reason. Chances are there might be something going on so speak up and talk to your doctor. Friends, here’s some food for thought. Some theories say that each one of our hearts is preprogrammed in our genetic makeup to have a certain amount of beats per our lifespan. When we race our hearts, by that theory, we are racing to the end of that program much faster. As for Marla she’s doing a lot better, thanks be to God, and I’ll ask you to keep her in your good thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.

GO DOWNTOWN MODESTO 7th Annual Modesto Marathon Movie & Wine Night Feb. 20th, State Theatre Modesto Sponsored by Hillock Family Dental, will feature the film McFarland USA. The movie is the true story of an underdog Central Valley cross country team’s fight for the California State Championship, starring Kevin Costner. This fun evening will include food, wine, silent auctions and drawings followed by a Q&A with film representatives. The event is a fundraiser for the Teens Run Modesto program.
