No, both of my Murphy girls were born in February. That makes this month more special than anything. Happy Birthday Madison and Abigail. Your mom and I so very proud of you. There is something beautifully cathartic about February. January sits under the haze of the New Year and people are still battling their resolutions. In February, there is freedom to shift into the new year gear, start new things, make changes and learn how we need to operate in the crazy new world order. It is up to us, our friends, our family, our workplaces and our community to rally together to make sure we are doing the things here to make this our home. It is so very important for us to live local and be strong and connect with each other. Which gets us back to romance, love, Mardi Gras and President’s Day. Abraham Lincoln and George Washington represent the best of the American Presidency. These are the ideals we must stand for. Which gets me to love. We must love the different
people of the world like we love our own families. This makes our family and friend units all the more important. Which leads to romance. I love my valentine Rebecca more than ever and my Abigail and Madison make my heart warm with love and pride. Make sure you tell your significant others how much you love them. It doesn’t have to be on Feb 14, it should be everyday. Which brings us to Mardi Gras. This wraps all of this up into one amazing celebration. Fun, family, friends, food, frolic, festival, and French-American culture and music are all rolled up into one fun time. Lassaiz Les Bon Temps Rouler. All you need is love. It is really so simple as a guiding light, and John Lennon was pointing out the obvious. But if you let this be your outlook, then you will do great. Do the things you love, love where you live, love each day and most importantly, love yourself, and you will be ok. I really do love living here. I love working here. This is really what it is all about. Thank you to all of the people and places that make it
good to be here. Even as work continues on the movement to reduce and prevent homelessness, the Stewardship Council has moved to launch a second related effort under Focus on Prevention. This effort will focus on individuals who are, or have been, engaged in the criminal and juvenile justice systems, and their families. In the March session, we will review additional data about this population, and begin developing plans and structures to move to action. wine or mead, the Brewins HomeBrew Club is the place to be! Get out of the house and come hang out with a fun group of people, at various restaurants and locations around the Central Valley. A group of homebrew enthusiasts established the club a year ago, and meet monthly to share tips, recipes, bottle swap their concoctions, and have an educational talk on a topic that changes monthly. Past topics have included German styles, Seasonals, IPAs, and have also challenged club members by randomly selecting ingredients that the club member then has to brew into a (hopefully drinkable) beverage! The motto of the club is, “To promote and enjoy the hobby of Home Brewing within the Central Valley region of California” and although that sounds basic, they do this very well. Their current schedule is the third Friday of the month at 7pm, but the location changes every month to be accessible to both Stanislaus and San Joaquin Counties. Like them on facebook for news and updates on not only their monthly meetings, but also club events such as the annual Chili Cook Off, and group events like Central Valley Brew Fest and most recently, a full, behind-the-scenes tour of Dust Bowl Brewing Company’s Fulkerth location in Turlock by headmaster brewer, Don Oliver. Many of the items are purchased from the local brewing equipment shop, Barley and Wine, who host meetings from time to time. They sell everything you need from grain to bottle, and have a wide variety of beer and cider kits, for the newbie brewer. All experience levels are welcome to join the meetings. Whether it’s your first brew or your 50th, there is always something to learn and something new to try! Not only does the group of over 20 people meet to discuss what they’ve got fermenting currently, they love to give back to the community. Last year they participated in several fundraisers, such as the Sips ‘n Suds Ripon High Fundraiser, the Manteca K9 PD fundraiser, and coming up on Feb. 18th, they’ll be at Ripon’s bi-annual Elegant Edibles, an event similar to the Center for Human Services of Modesto’s Edible Extravaganza. Picture Day is magical because the cast comes in full costume and make-up! It is thrilling, exciting and energizing! beautiful Lake Merritt, an effort is underway between the city and citizen volunteers to preserve an iconic 40-foot play sculpture from 1954 that has appeared on album covers and in countless family photos of blissful climbing children. Its creator, Robert Winston, was a renowned jewelry designer and teacher at Oakland’s California College of Arts and Crafts. Few of these valuable modernist play structures still exist. But the Oakland “Monster,” as Winston named it, is nearly identical to one recently rediscovered in Modesto’s now closed Beard Brook Park, nestled along Dry Creek. Modesto’s 25-foot play sculpture has been attributed to Winston, following an in-depth study by Modesto Art Museum’s founder and architecture curator, Bob Barzan. It’s one of our city’s great mid-century design treasures but sits neglected amidst a growing tent village of citizens experiencing homelessness. As most designers (and fans of “Mad Men”) well know, what is often referred to as “retro” is a significant design movement called “midcentury modernism.” Mid-20th century designers across the country (and especially in California) were heavily influenced by the modern aesthetic formulated in 1930s Europe and brought across the Atlantic by many famous designers fleeing the Nazis. Modesto itself was a hotbed of mid-century design. What is now known as “Modesto
Modern” or “Central Valley Modernism” received national attention in architecture books, journals and magazines – among them a 1944 exhibition cover of New York’s Museum of Modern Art. The Modesto Art Museum has already documented (and created a walking tour of) over 85 modernist buildings and landscapes across the city by notable local and national designers. Architecture lovers flock to cities like Palm Springs, a bona fide mid-century modern capital, stay in “retro” hotels and take architecture tours to admire the many gems of notable architects. How might we embrace and value Modesto’s own heritage of mid-century modernism and establish ourselves as a unique destination for design-minded tourists? It wouldn’t be a stretch. The design assets are all here. All weneed is the right vision, creative leadership and community will to preserve and promote them. According to an October 1962 Modesto Bee article, the funding for Winston’s play sculpture was raised by dozens of Modesto citizens, 69 businesses, and 41 community organizations. I’m convinced there are many here today who agree that we need to preserve this mid-century icon and realize the huge potential of its cultural, historical and economic value. Aaah February, my birthday month! Yes, throughout the month you will see me celebrating at numerous local hot spots! I do share this month with past President’s B’days, St. Valentine’s Day and Mardi Gras! How perfect is that? The biggest party of all is held annually at Tresetti’s on 11th St. in downtown Modesto. This year the celebration is going old school, out of the street and back inside the walls of Tresetti’s. On Saturday Feb, 25th Tresetti’s will be hosting a traditional New Orleans Style Buffet with all the southern Louisiana fixin’s: Gumbo with andouille sausage & chicken, red beans and rice, jambalaya, andouille sausages, jalapeno corn bread, & corn maque choux! Corn what? Pronounced “mock shoe” is a Louisiana staple similar to succotash. Tickets must be purchased in advance! Tickets must be picked up in person, no exceptions. No doubt this carnival cuisine event will sell out quickly at $20 per ticket! You get the buffet and Mardi Gras beads! Cool old school price, too! Plus there will be drink specials! On Tuesday Feb. 28th, aka Fat Tuesday Tresetti’s will be hosting a low-key celebration worthy of a night out as well! Tammy and Mitch Maisetti opened Tresetti’s back in 1994, 23 years and still a Modesto favorite. It was heartbreaking news for so many in February 2014 when Mitch passed away. Mitch and wife Tammy would have been married 30 years. They had 3 children, Jeremiah who also sadly passed away in August 2004, Jordan who is 26 and actively running the family business with his Mom, and Jaxon who is 21 and also works at Tresetti’s. Though this family has had too much sorrow, it is inspirational how the family remains close while still committed to their employees, the community, and their long time patrons in this fine establishment. They continue to donate to local elementary school fundraisers, Justice For Families, CA Women’s Music Festival, and more. Modesto View’s own Rockabilly writer, Jen Allsup was gracious to join me in our full

METAL BAVMORDA by Eve Oberlander Bavmorda is making a music video! “Titled Debt to a Witch”, this death metal song is based on three witches who eat the young and beautiful to obtain immortal beauty. I got off work Friday to receive a phone call. Bavmorda had lost their location for their video shoot. They asked if they could use my place and I said no problem. I went home and quickly cleared out my garage, moving things out and sweeping the concrete floor. I knew at some point I’d be on that concrete floor, acting as a witch’s victim. Cast and crew showed up. We set up an altar, rope and cameras. And I threw a party during the video shoot. We had some laughs at a few mishaps. Things we will laugh about when we get together and hang out later. It was so much fun being in a metal music video with friends and one of your favorite local bands. Final filming will be done by the time this article is printed. The song is tight, the video is going to be sick! Look for the song on their upcoming EP. Bavmorda formed in 2014 as a grind project to perform at Joe and Jamie’s wedding. They were thinking, “Screw the first dance!” They wanted

live metal at the reception. What better way to play your first show as a new band but at your very own wedding? The Bavmorda wedding set was fun and they continued to create music in a heavier direction. What is now a female-fronted Death Metal band with Jamie Salazar on vocals and her husband Joe Salazar (Forever Obscured) on Guitar and their new lineup change of Mat Zahn (Zombie Death Stench) on Bass, Roel Guajardo (Forever Obscured) on drums, they sound more death then grind. Their live performances leave a chill on my skin with Jamie’s deep growls and higher pitch screams, Joe’s heavy, beefy tone and Mat’s thundery low end sorcery on guitars paired with Roel’s powerful blast beats. I’m looking forward to Bavmorda and what they have in store for this New Year.
Breaking news, longtime favorite local metal band of mine, Forever Obscured is still together. Forever Obscured wants to remind all of you metal heads that they are still alive and kicking, writing and practicing new material. The band has merchandise on sale. T-shirts and Cd’s are available. UNPLUGGED The Unsinkable Mali Blues By Aaron Rowan
While Modesto Unplugged has been most closely associated with the Americana and folk genres, several of the most satisfying moments for me as a music curator have been those when we featured sounds from around the globe. One of my favorite showcases involved a classically trained soloist of the erhu, the two-stringed Chinese fiddle - one of the most beautiful instruments I’ve ever heard. Traditional tunes from South Africa, Russia, Finland and more have also been
among our programming. Now, with an increased focus on world music this year at the Music At The GMC series, we’re ready to explore new and dynamic instruments and styles. Mamadou Sidibe hails from the Wassoulou region of Mali in West Africa. Twenty-five years ago, he played a groundbreaking role in transforming the music of this region from its origins in hunters’ sacred melodies, played on six-string donso ngoni (hunter’s harps), into music of philosophical observations, politics and daily life. The donso ngoni originated several hundred years ago and was traditionally played for hunting ceremonies. Mamadou has helped expand the instrument’s range, creating 8-, 10- and 12-string versions called kamale ngoni. Mamadou and his wife Vanessa perform original, soulful, poignant and uplifting music in-
fluenced by West African rhythms and southern American blues. Vanessa Sidibe, originally from New York, is an accomplished Afro-Cuban and salsa musician with an impeccable rhythm on percussion. She brings earthy depth and ethereal sensuality to all her vocals, singing in English, Spanish and Bambara (the predominant national language of Mali.) Mamadou & Vanessa are winners of several prestigious music competitions including the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. They’ll be with us on Saturday February 18, in the Gottschalk Music Center’s recital hall which you’ll find at 1502 E St. As always, doors are at 7:00, music’s at 7:30, and it’s $15 general or free for kids under twelve. Also appearing this month at the GMC is Native American songstress Susan Toney, with her fusion of country, pop, rock, and R&B. Open Your Heart to Love Jane Seymour

role in Young Winston to a celebrated remake of East of Eden and then as a Golden Globe winning Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Jane Seymour has been blazing trails throughout her career. Besides her talent both in performance as well as art, Ms. Seymour dedicated much of her time to helping others, and assisting organizations that assist those in need or crisis. She created the “Open Hearts” design that now has become a symbol of giving and openness and this year, becomes one of the symbols of the American Heart Association Wear Red Campaign. She will be the keynote speaker of the Go Red for Heart event in Modesto at the Gallo Center for the Arts on May 11 & 12 We were fortunate to connect with Ms. Seymour and learn a bit more about her contributions and future plans.
ModestoView: When did first realize that you had fine art talents? Jane Seymour: I used to draw as a child and I loved to paint in high school. In fact, I could have gone to college for art, but I didn’t. I started painting seriously after I went through a terrible divorce when I was 40 and lost everything, my house my money, everything. I was given some free art lessons by a gentleman who had donated his time and I later commissioned a drawing of mine as a donation. He taught me basic color techniques and after that it was my favorite thing to do. I was in a book called Actors to Artists and was then involved with private issue Discover card where they asked me to paint for Discover card and 3 of my paintings were shown at the Guggenheim. One of my paintings on the credit card was sold for 25 thousand dollars and that money was donated to the Open Heart Foundation. I realized that painting was something that I could do everyday for myself. I didn’t have to wait for someone to hire me, it was something that I could do for myself and it was very healing for me. Also, it can help raise funds for important charities and highlight important issues. MV: Your path has been amazing, what was one of your most memorable moments on film?

JS: I’ve had so many it’s hard to pick but obviously Dr. Quinn, Somewhere in Time and War and Remembrance because I spent 9 months shooting that film and in many ways it depicted WW2, which both of my parents were very much involved in. Also, Wedding Crashers gave me a whole new career using more of my comedic skills. MV: Is there a role that you have done that you would love to reprise? JS: Maybe Dr. Quinn. But I’m much older now so it’s hard to reprise. MV: How does it feel for you know that your Open Heart art has been such an inspiration for so many? JS: It thrills me to feel that somehow I came up with a universal symbol of giving and receiving love that helps people understand challenge in life and to accept and let go of the negative things in life and use their experience to reach out to help others. I feel that life is about the journey of life and how we grow, and we grow from adversity and challenge and the Open Heart message really speaks to that. MV: With Dancing with the Stars, you were
able to fulfill a dream from your early dancing days, what is another dream you hope to realize? JS: I have to learn how to sing and play a guitar! I’m currently filming a pilot called His Wives and Daughters where I play a country music star. I am going to start taking lessons soon and even if it isn’t my own voice or guitar used in the series, I’m going to do it just for myself. MV: What message do you send to women when it comes to heart smart living? JS: First, stay closely intact with your cardiologist take the test, take the meds they tell you take and the advice they give you like meditation and eliminating stress as much as you can in your live also heart healthy exercise and heart healthy foods. I personally love blueberries, almonds, pistachios, fast walks on the beach and I love to mediate as well and sometimes I paint which puts me into a meditative state. MV: What is something that you want the people of Modesto to know about you after this event?
JS: I would like to share my passion for giving back and spreading the Open Heart philosophy. That is why we started the Open Heart Foundation. I want to empower other underserved charities to do the same. I would love to create ambassadors throughout the world that embody the open heart message. I really believe that each of us in our own way can make a difference in the world with our unique abilities. I am fortunate enough to have a celebrity platform that allows me to convey messages that I believe in. MV: What is next for Jane Seymour? JS: As I mentioned, I am currently filming a new pilot for CMT network called His Wives and Daughters. Also, I recently finished filming the movies Bereave Me Not, Mistrust and Praying For Rain. Besides my acting career, I have a fulltime design business. The most exciting upcoming events are a new home collection with Michael Amini and an Open Heart fragrance to launch on Mother’s Day. MV: What do you think about the fact that Modesto is the home of George Lucas, American Graffiti and Star Wars? JS: I’m very happy to be there. I am such a huge fan of his. We all have these pictures in our head.
What are the images that are really burned into your brain? Photographs are powerful. They can excite, please, anger, provoke and inspire. Many people react to different things and this month we turn the camera back on ourselves. FotoModesto is going to blanket downtown Modesto in photographic imagery. This 23-location show will showcase over 50 photographers. But it doesn’t stop there. These photos are there to inspire the photographer in all of us. Maybe photography is an amazing Ansel Adams portrait of your dinner, a Salvador Dali inspired selfie. No matter what it means to you, we celebrate the images of our community and invite you to be part of this. At ModestoView, we try to think of really cool ways to celebrate Modesto through art and photographs every day. Our covers have won awards in the way we celebrate our city, but there is an award winner in each of us. Your eye, your take, your view is so important. We are fortunate to have the talented Michael J Mangano to bring amazing ideas to life and his work will be featured in this show. Our friend David Schroeder has captured images all over the world, some of my favorites are from Cuba, and his library of work inspired this project. Legendary local photographers like Adrian Mendoza, Bill Harris, and David Shroeder will be showcased along with new up and coming talents. Many of you have watched as Adrian built his “11th St Story” showcase and David produced a beautiful show from Cuba and many of these images will be showcased. Aaron Draper has a new series that will really touch your soul. Their eyes have seen things that are beautiful, terrifying, inspiring and simply amazing. In a world of selfies and cell phone cameras do the photographic arts still have a place at our visual table? Does fine art photography still exist, or has it been buried by the endless stream of instant gratification images that flood our social media? These, and similar questions, were the stimulus behind the creation of fotoMODESTO. David Schroeder, John Wynn, and Edward Mendes conjured up the idea of taking a look at the current state of photography, in all of its’ various forms, and presenting it in one grand event for your consideration. So check out this amazing show this month that is hosted all across our downtown. Dig into your archives, your soul and your mind and see what images you can do and share in this smorgasbord of amazing imagery.

Center Stage Conservatory Brings a Haunting New Season By Summer Krafft Photo by Jeffrey Truong
Center Stage Conservatory will premiere the first
play of their 2017 season, Shining City, opening February 10th at the Lower Level Studio at 948 11th Street. It is a different kind of ghost story, following a man through counseling after the loss of his wife, which turns out to be not as simple a story as it once seemed. The play will run weekends through February 26th. The season will feature a total of six plays, all on the subject of what haunts us. On that subject, Artistic Director Traci Sprague said, “This past year it has become evident how haunted people are by things from their past. Something that I will call beautiful, even if at face value we would not define it as such. But beautiful they are because they are a part of this rich complex and messy world that makes us who we are. When we explore these hauntings, we can shine a light to see love in the darkest of moments and help us see what we need to hold onto in this often harsh and cruel world. Theatre is known for its power to shine a light; to bring the necessary awareness,
to help us heal and provide this inspiration to make changes in our world and thoughts both small and large. These are tremulous times and it seemed most important to explore what haunts us with the 2017 season.” Next up, in April, will be the theater’s second annual Devised Theatre Project, a piece of the new theater built from the ground up at Center Stage by local writers, performers, and Sprague herself. Later in the season, the theater will be producing heartwarming The Miss Firecracker Contest, the comedy Dog Sees God, the family drama The Effect of Gamma Rays on the Man-In-the-Moon Marigolds, wrapping up in December with the classic holiday ghost story Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol. The season will also offer a variety of special events including music, a dance showcase, and drop-in yoga sessions. In addition, Center Stage is offering season subscriptions which include tickets to every show of the season at a discount, as well as discounts on special events. HISTORY History In Your backyard: E. Clampus Vitus Chapter 58 by Lloyd G. Ploutz, Historian You live in a very historical area of Stanislaus and Merced Counties dating from the Gold Rush days. These are the established areas of responsibility of your local Chapter of E. Clampus Vitus, AKA, “Clampers”. Estanislao Chapter 58 was established on June 21, 1958 at Knights Ferry. This meeting of historical and fun loving men joined their original founding group of gold miners who organized the first Clampers at Mokelumne Hill Mining Camp in 1853. Why did these hard working, hard drinking, hard fighting men with total irreverence towards any organized structure or fraternal organizations want to have one of their own? The elite organizations like the “Masons”, “Oddfellows”, “Sons of 76”, “Order of the Star Spangled Banner”, or “Knights of Columbus”, would not let the preconceive low life miners join and they would then “Black Ball” them. These elite organization members where the store owners, large mine owners, saloon owners, attorneys, judges, business managers and other business owners Over time these rejected miners decided to fight back by organizing their own selective Fraternal Group, were by E. Clampus Vitus was formed as an answer to the rejections of these special groups of people, Their rules were very simple: #1 E Clampus Vitus would be a fun, hell-raising organization. #2 Each new candidate must go through an initiation before the present members, and if they passed, then (#3) the new associate would then buy every member in the saloon their drinks for the night. Then and only then he would be a member in good standing. The members of E. Clampus Vitus would “not” purchase any mining supplies, materials, or services from any businessman that was not a member of their organization ECV. The
business owners had no choice but to join E. Clampus Vitus if they wanted to sell their wares. Join they did. As I stated E. Clampus Vitus had simple rules of having fun at the expense of the new initiate. Humor was paramount, no limits were had toward practical jokes and tricks played upon the unexpected. Good times were had by all. As any sound organization must be, it should have a foundation of principals. These principals were to “Protect the widows and the orphans, especially the widows”. and live by the creed, “Credo Crea Absurdom”, which literally means, “It is absurd because it is.” So to summarize, the beginning of E. Campus Vitus was born out of social frustration of the day, and to have something extremely fun and fun it was because someone else was paying for the party. Today your local Estanislao Chapter 58 of E. Clampus Vitus still ensues these principals with its on going work to identify, record, and expose to the public the history in your back yard. Stanislaus and Merced Counties have over 10,000 members on our registration rolls. Once you’re a member, you’re a member for life. There are no dues and no requirements, but to have fun twice a year. Your local Chapter 58 has researched, resurrected, and recorded the physical locations of importance at more than 45 sites. Many of these historical location have an established monument denoting the local events that took place. You will note also the plaques mounted upon special building and structures. Please stop by and read them. For the most part you will see E. Clampus Vitus Chapter #58 and its then Noble Grand Humbugs, AKA, past president name.

This is a good thing and means a whole lotta folks out there are involved in making things better for the music and arts community here in the valley. My hat is off to Chris Murphy the energizer bunny that makes this happen and to all the staff that do their part. BLUES Full Strength by Earl Matthews Hello everyone, winter is in full strength and as wet as she pleases this year and I can think of no better way to warm up on a cold night then to go out to a show. Kicking the month off, the Poorhouse Millionaires Duo will be at the Bourbon Barrel in Sonora for some songs and fun. On the 4th Rob Hill Band will be at Knights Ferry Saloon, one of my favorite places to enjoy music. Rob calls his music Jazzy Blues, I think it perfectly describes his sound. His band’s sound is built on a rock solid rhythm section with 3 talented lead players and Rob’s impassioned singing style. You really can’t go wrong. On the 10th Terrie Londee in at Vintage Lounge in Turlock with her group the B-4 Dawn Band. They play Funk, Soul, R&B and Classic Rock. Terrie has a beautiful voice and a vivacious spirit that is sure to keep you smiling all night long. Let’s all make a note of the annual Johnny Cash Birthday Bash at the Prospect Theater.
This event always slays the crowd, bringing together a whole bunch of different singers and musicians from our local music family to celebrate the legacy of Johnny Cash and raise money for the Theater. Two days later at the Gallo Center 10 time Grammy Award winner Bonnie Raitt will perform. She is listed on both the top 100 singers and top 100 guitar players of all time by Rolling Stone. She mixes Blues, Rock, Folk and Country sounds together to great effect. I have been a fan most of my life. What an amazing human being; I hope I get to go. Finishing things off are a couple of Poorhouse Millionaires shows, a full band show at the Knights Ferry Saloon on the 25th and on the 26th the Duo will be doing acoustic breakfast at Deva Cafe. As always you can jam away your blues every Thursday at the Garlic Brothers in Stockton with Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood. Or in Modesto with David Dow at the Barking Dog. ZEN Happy New Year of the Yin Fire Rooster 2017! by Mary Layton According to the lunar Chinese calendar the New Year began on January 28th. The internet has all kinds of amusing but also interesting comments about what this Rooster year will be all about. So I learned, while the last year was the year of the Fire Monkey, full of surprises and unpredictability, the energy of the Fire Rooster is supposedly the opposite. There will be more planning and things will be resolved in a step by step approach. We may feel more grounded and less anxious. That would be nice. It would make 2017 the perfect year to take responsibility for the direction of your life. Instead of getting fancy, think of practical solutions, of what you want to achieve and how you want to get it done. The word “Yin”(in Chinese : female) in front of the Fire Rooster means that this Rooster has a feminine energy. Along with all the planning and preparing it will be important to inject a feminine quality: To trust and follow one’s instincts and intuition. For example, if something doesn’t feel quite right
we need to pay attention! The other thing that can be said about the Rooster is that he is the early riser in the yard, waking everyone. 2017 may be a much-needed wake up call. A year to renew and restore, replace old furniture and buy new clothes. The Rooster is proud of his plumage and struts around as ruler of the barnyard. This archaic and masculine(yang) role makes the rooster a conservative with unfailing dedication. My Tandem Valentine

It’s no secret that exercising with a friend can be more beneficial to one’s fitness than exercising solo. So why not invite your best friend to join you? For me, my best friend would happen to be my wife. When it comes to cycling one of us obviously has a stronger speed advantage on the bike verses the other. For the sake of loving kindness, I won’t mention who that might be in our marriage. Regardless, when my wife and I go biking together I’ve always been more about keeping her safe with me on the road instead of bolting way ahead to pull the pack as how my group rides. I admit I know a bit more about cycling etiquette and the laws of the road than my spouse. So consequently I am constantly being more concerned about where she’s at and that she’s OK on a ride, which doesn’t really make for the best cycling workout. This is why I turned to Tandem Cycling. With Tandem Cycling I always know where she’s at and taking the lead on the front of the bike. I also educate her with riding skills to get stronger and wiser when it comes to riding with traffic. This is just one of the many pluses with Tandem Cycling.
My personal favorite is that we can stay together during the entire ride. We can carry on a conversation and enjoy not only some oneon-one time together, but also some cardio fitness. We have great fun, and outside of that she continually lets me know she’s drafting me. No kidding. Tandem bikes are fairly inexpensive and I personally enjoy the extra weight of such a bike because the benefits of having to work a lot harder to get moving on a tandem bike makes me faster for my road bike which weighs about 190% less, extra rider included. This Spring, I invite you to invest in your relationship, fitness and riding skills because the couple who tandems together, stays together.

Over the winter holiday, I had the awesome opportunity to practice the Olympic sport of curling while in Lake Tahoe. It was such an interesting experience and inspired me to continue trying new and even unusual sports. I highly recommend looking out for clubs and events to expand your ‘game repertoire’. Spring is such a wonderful time to get out into the air and enjoy Modesto’s weather heating up! And there are so many cool, unique programs in the Stanislaus area for all ages! Clubs that surround sports like fencing, rugby, archery and rollerhockey are all accessible near Modesto. In the last month, the Central Valley Rugby Club has begun sign ups! Coached by two local, experienced rugby players, this could be an awesome way to familiarize yourself with a dif-

If practices and giving up weekends for games isn’t your style, there are still tons of neat ways to try a new sport in Modesto. One of everyone’s favorite additions in 2016 is the new ‘MB2 Raceway’. As mentioned in the last issue, the Stanislaus Dry Creek River Trail is an ideal location for biking, running, tennis, picnics, walking your dog and even frisbee golf! Yes, it’s not just a game invented for the wii! With a full course at East La Loma Park, frisbee golf is a great way to get your dose of vitamin D.
