Maybe you didn’t know this, but I love

Modesto. I didn’t always, and it took a long time and a different perspective after leaving and travelling around this planet. Sometimes it takes a different set of eyes. You know, like when you’ve known someone a long time and things change so you see them differently? Or maybe you felt love at first sight? Maybe you had that magic moment where you knew that it was the right thing? You can feel that way about people, a song and even your city. What I have learned about loving your city, is the more you get involved, learn about things, plan some events and really become part of the fabric, that’s when you can really feel the love, But at the end of the day, what’s love got to do with it and what does it all mean? Part of really loving your community is to really try to understand and involve all of different cultures and genres so you really feel that cosmopolitan experience. Cosmopolitan doesn’t have to be all hoidy toidy, but it can be the rich experiences that make life interesting and create variety. For example, we have an amazing

African American community here in Modesto and as February is Black History Month, we wanted to reach out to our friends at the King Kennedy Center and the innovative Sankofa Repertory group that is presenting Raisin in the Sun this month at the Gallo Center. It is really important that Modesto embraces all of our cultures, engaging them all in the mainstream and making sure we all take part and understand. When this happens, we will truly have a city that gives and gets love. But the most love in the world I have is for my family and February is so special as both Madison and Abigail were born in February. Both girls were given Feb 14 due dates, but they fortunately they spread it out a bit, but they were still Valentine’s babies to Becky and me. The family network is so very special, but it is key to remember, as in all things in life, you have to give to get love and true love comes from honesty and trust. Without that there can’t be true love and some-

times you have to let things go to find real happiness. My friends and my family are my happiness and I am so very grateful for all of you that make Modesto area living so special. I can’t thank enough the local businesses that we work with that are our friends and together we all make Modesto a place to love and can publish ModestoView and get it out to so many people. When you do business with friendship, trust and honesty, things go right and that’s why we are here. Hope you find your special moments and your special places and make those Modesto memories and connections that will last a lifetime. Thank you for sharing your time with ModestoView. There is always time for some romance. A quick date with your wife, partner or significant other is always possible. It doesn’t have to be a big deal, it can be a quick love note left on the nightstand or an extra hug and a smile. Don’t save your romance just for Valentine’s Day. There are little things you can do that have the look of love and be really romantic and set the tone for a great time. What are your romantic places? Is it a walk on the bike trail? The corner booth at your fave restaurant ? The back row of the movie theatre? The garden at the McHenry Mansion? Walking across the Knights Ferry Bridge? You never know where your magic moment will be. But when it does, take the time to enjoy it, and everything around you so it stays with you the rest of your life.

Cost of the license and ceremony is $121 or $126 for confidential marriage licenses. Certified marriage certificates are an additional $15 and must be paid by check. No blood test is required. Guests are limited to 15 for each wedding, and children must be age 12 or older to attend in the Mansion. While we are on the subject about affairs of the heart; to celebrate this year, the American Heart Association is hosting an inaugural Modesto Wear Red Day celebration at Vintage Faire Mall at on February 1 between 10am-2pm and at the Stockton Heat’s “Heat with Heart” Night at the Stockton Arena, 7pm. The Vintage Faire event will feature free health screenings from local Go Red For Women cause sponsor Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute, CPR training, lipstick matching from Macy’s, and more activities for the whole family. Our high heels are on and we are training to “Walk a Mile” in her shoes. Why? We are walking to raise money and awareness to stop sexual abuse and domestic violence. There is no room for abuse in our society and we have to walk for those that are defenseless and need the strength to get away from abusers. FOTO Modesto month long celebration of our award-winning regional photographers, this year in a revised format. “Best of the Best” is the central Show at Mistlin Gallery, where the participating photographers exhibit their best works. Show opens at the gallery February 5 and runs to March 1, with artists reception and opening taking place during Art Walk, February 21. Other events involved with FOTO Modesto will be presentations by David Schroeder on “The Art of Photography” February 7, a part of the #Expose yourself to Art” lecture series. February 15, Noah Wilson presents “The Constructed Nature of Landscape Photography” exploring alternative approaches to the natural world. Noah is head of the photography program at Modesto Junior College and this lecture described as a mind-bending experience. Both programs start at 7 pm at Mistlin Gallery, FREE to public Would you like to move beyond taking “snap-shots” and learn to create photographs? Join John Wynn and David Schroeder as they give a Crash Course in DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) photography. The course will focus on the “Exposure Triangle” which includes the effects of shutter speed, apertures, and ISO settings. February 5th is Chinese New Year, and

this year is Year of the Pig! We will all be blessed with good fortune. What better way to celebrate Year of the Pig than with a hearty meal and drink at the Twisted Pig Bar & Grill in Modesto! We started with the sweet and savory Belly Bombs- slow brined pork belly that’s smoked and deep fried then topped with maple bourbon drizzle and garlic chutney. If you haven’t encountered pork belly before, it looks like very thick and tender

strips of bacon. It’s like a bacon steak! If you’re at the Twisted Pig and can’t decide between all their incredible menu items, go for the brand new Kitchen Sink Burger! It’s got all your flavors covered in one dish. This burger is a hand-formed Angus beef patty topped with lettuce, tomato, pepper jack cheese, bacon, deep fried mozzarella, onion rings, jalapenos, and chipotle-ranch drizzle. We ordered ours with their house-made chips and a Modelo Especial with lime! Chef Ryan

Breshears thinks this burger is going to be a big hit- he said “It’s got quite a kick to it. The deep fried mozzarella sets it apart.” Another new item soon to grace Twisted Pig’s extensive menu is the Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich. We were blessed with good fortune and treated to an exclusive preview of this delectable monstrosity! This sandwich centers around a large, breaded and deep fried chicken breast that has been stuffed with ham and swiss cheese. This is then topped with bacon, lettuce, and tomato, and served with a very flavorful house-made Alfredo sauce. Try it with Garlic Fries or with a Garden Salad! The Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich was artfully paired by Bar Manager Alena Crabtree with a popular Twisted Pig cocktail- the Chili

Pineapple Paloma. This is a tequila drink with grapefruit and lime juice, as well as pineapple, with a spicy Tajin rim! Come celebrate Year of the Pig with us and with Randy and Amber Rocha, the owners of the Twisted Pig, who opened the Bar & Grill for business in 2015, after opening the Tap Room Pub & Grub in 2013. Modesto legend Gene Winfield, class of 1945 is being inducted into the Modesto High Hall Of Fame. There is an amazing roster of people that have graduated from Modesto High and now the celebrated car customizer will be added to the Hall of Fame along with the Gallos, Harve Presnell and others. Gene Winfield revolutionized car customizing at his old Chicken Coop shop on Figaro. He later moved to 451 Tully where he created

masterpieces like the Jade Idol. He later went on to develop concept cars for TV and film and many of the early Hot Wheels were modeled after Winfield creations. His cars also appeared in movies like Star Trek and Blade Runner. Gene was Grand Marshall of the Kiwanis Cruise Parade and was inducted on the Modesto Graffiti Walk of Fame in 10th St Plaza. Gene is still creating cars and attending shows around the world and we are so pleased Gene is in the Hall of Fame. He will be inducted by his fellow Legends of the Cruise. There will be a special induction ceremony on February 23 at the Elks Club Hall in Modesto.

but with better music.” That’s how my dear friend Hillari DeSchane once described this art form rife with absurdity and intrigue. Hillari is Modesto Unplugged’s renaissance-woman-in-residence: opera lover, historical pet mystery author, and member of Modesto’s ‘Becoming Jane Austen’ book club recently profiled in Oprah Winfrey’s ‘O’ magazine. She’s been advocating for an Austen-inspired opera performance, and it’s finally going to happen when Opera Modesto presents an entire Jane Austen MiniCon event next season. INTER VIEW U.S. Representative Josh Harder

In our January issue, we talked about the

future of our region, and we learned that we are better when we work together and create a smarter economy. The recent election was hard for many, but we have an opportunity to bring our community together and find common ground, free from politics. No matter who you supported, we need teamwork help our region. Josh Harder was raised in Turlock, CA. He grew up the son of an optometrist, had a local paper route, graduated from Modesto High’s International Baccalaureate program, got a Rotary scholarship, studied at Stanford and Harvard, helped small businesses in Kenya, and spent time in the real world of business working with startups to help them grow and succeed—all before he was 30. Most recently, he taught at MJC to share his knowledge and get the next generation started in the business world. Feeling like the Central Valley was getting left behind, he decided to run for Congress in the 10th district in 2017. Despite a long and difficult campaign, he was able to make time to marry his sweetheart Pam and they worked hard together all the way to victory and engaged a lot of people along the way. If the campaign was hard, now comes the harder part for Mr. Harder. How do we bring our community together after the campaign? How can we focus on what needs to be done? And can we build a stronger local economy and shine a light on California Congressional District 10? Let’s get to know Rep. Josh Harder. ModestoView: What motivated you to run for office? Josh Harder: I love the Central Valley, and over the past couple years I got the feeling that my home wasn’t getting the kind of representation it deserved. Especially after the 2016 election, I realized that progress on the issues I cared about most--healthcare, immigration, jobs--was being held up not by a lack of entrepreneurs or civic leaders, but instead by a lack of political leaders with the courage to stand up for their communities. I knew we could do better, and I was inspired by the grassroots enthusiasm that swept not just the country but our community as well. And so after talking it over with Pam and with my parents, I made the decision to run for office. MV: How did your parents react when you won the election? JH: Relief, joy, excitement...all of the above. California’s system for counting ballots kept my folks in suspense for a little longer than they would have liked, but it made the final result extra special in the end. If anything, they felt joy for my team as much as anything else, the

young campaigners they got to know well over the course of several months. MV: What was one of the most surprising things of your campaign? JH: The sheer enthusiasm behind our race. It was impossible to imagine at the start just what kind of grassroots support we’d see in the end. Yes, we knew that the community was motivated, but to see it translate into thousands of volunteers shows the power of politics at its very best. The most important thing to remember about our campaign is that in the end over 100,000 people voted who sat out the last midterm election in 2014. That’s amazing and that level of civic engagement needs to be the new standard for the Valley. MV: There are so many challenges for our area, what do you think the top 3 things are that we need to address first? JH: Water. We must meet this critical challenge head on, beginning with sensible solutions to expand our water supply, better manage our existing water resources, and help our communities better prepare for droughts. Secondly, we need to focus on lowering the cost of health care. This was one of the central messages of my campaign, and it’s something that’s impacted virtually every family out there, mine included. It’s especially true in this district, where half of the people here are on Medicaid. Folks should never have to choose between going to the doctor or buying groceries, yet too many find themselves in that sort of dilemma. It’s unacceptable. Agriculture—farming is the economic

and cultural bedrock of the Central Valley. About a third of all jobs in the district are connected to agriculture and the combined agricultural output of Stanislaus and San Joaquin county exceeded $8 billion in 2017. Supporting our farmers is going to be one of my top priorities in Congress. That’s why I’m thrilled to have secured a spot on House committee on Agriculture … it’s one way I’ll be able to fight for the priorities at the top of people’s minds. MV: Governor Gavin Newsom has said he will make the needs of the Central Valley a priority in his administration. How can our area better work with state level leaders to make even bigger strides? JH: I’m encouraged by what the Governor has signaled over his first few weeks in office, especially by his visit to our region and by the conversations we’ve had over the phone. I hope he continues to give the Central Valley the spotlight it deserves and I’m ready to be an ally to get things done. The biggest key to success will be aggressive advocacy and a united front between all our regional elected officials--we’ll need to work together regardless of party and office to get results. MV: No matter who people voted for; what are some of the ways we can bring people together to move us forward? JH: Over my first few weeks in office, I’ve heard again and again that people want leaders in government to work together. It’s why I’ve made a commitment to have breakfast with ten democrats and ten republicans once a week to talk about those issues that we can work on. MV:What was the first thing you did when you got to Washington DC as a Representative Elect? JH: On day one, I voted to re-open the government. Before we can get to work on the issues that we ran on, we’ve got to figure out a way to get both sides together and bring this shutdown to an end. By now I’ve voted at least 8 times to do so, voting on the same package that passed with bi-partisan support in the final month of the last Congress. MV: Did you score a good office? JH: We got ourselves a nice office on the first floor...with a good view of construction! It will go away soon enough, but that’s what happens when you are a first-timer I guess. Absolutely anyone is welcome in our office anytime they visit DC--after all, my office really belongs to my constituents. MV: What would you tell someone that is considering being a public servant and making the move to run for office? JH: The first piece of advice I’d give is to take time to understand what drives you. A lot of the new freshmen members, myself included, didn’t come from political careers. None of us ran because we were chasing an office—we ran because we weren’t satisfied with what was happening in our communities, and we had a clear vision in mind for how we could make it better. The other thing I’d say is to understand the commitment from the start. Running for office takes a toll on yourself and on loved ones. MV: What do you think your best accomplishment could be in this term? JH: Excellent question—and to answer I want to point to the core issues I mentioned a moment ago: agriculture and the Central Valley economy. My goal is to ensure that a kid growing up in the Central Valley has the same opportunities to succeed as someone growing up anywhere else in America. I’ll add another quality: accessibility. Two years from now I want my constituents to say that they could get in touch with me, that I listened, and that I was responsive to their needs. MV: You have been in business a long time, what characteristics do you have that you hope to make you successful in Washington? JH: We need to be pragmatic in Washington—in this era of divided government, the only way we’re going to make

Local singer songwriter Brett Dennen developed a lot of his music skills at Camp Jack Hazard and has gone on to become a globally famous performer. So you never know what can happen. It is that time of the year where we cele-

brate Black History Month, which is also celebrated in Canada, United Kingdom and the Netherlands. However, in all actuality, one month out of the year does not begin to celebrate the work, life, accomplishments, achievements and challenges of African Americans in the United States and around the world. Literally, every day is a day in Black history. The recognition of Black history began in 1926 as Negro History Week by the Harvard educated and noted American Historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Dr. Woodson chose the month of February because two men he admired most Frederick Douglas a former slave and outspoken abolitionist and President Abraham Lincoln, architect of the Emancipation Proclamation which ended slavery celebrated their birthdays the second week of February. As a former slave, Fredrick Douglas designated his birthday February 14, because he did not know his exact birthday and so admired president Lincoln that he chose the same month and week of his birthday. Over the years, Modesto has been host to many icons of the civil rights movement including, John Lewis, Julian Bond, Dick Gregory, Maya Angelo, Cornell Wes, Maryum Ali and Danny Glover. As we prepare to celebrate the accomplishments, work, life advocacy and achievements of African Americans in the greater Modesto area. I will focus on the arts and

in particular Theater Arts. Four friends who had a love and appreciation for theater founded the Sankofa Theatre Company, the first and only African American theater company in Modesto in 2013. Co-Founders John Ervin III, Elizabeth Garmon, Cheryl Mitchell-Knox and Greg Savage wanted to bring more of African American experience to the stage in Modesto. They began to charter the course for Sankofa after performing in the Prospect Theater and Gallo Center for The Arts production of To Kill a Mocking Bird. Since its founding Sankofa Theatre Company has produced many plays and conducted a few theater workshops for youth. Sankofa has produced such plays as August Wilson’s Piano Lesson, and Fences. In addition, other noted work such as Looking over the Presidents Shoulder, Tawawa House, Freedom Riders, Exonerated, African American Journey, and Colored People’s Time, which were all staged at the Gallo Center for The Arts. Freedom Riders was also performed at the Grand Theatre for the Arts in Tracy. Sankofa also produced Coretta …The life and times of Coretta Scott-King at the State Theater. Sankofa continues to bring to the forefront of our community the African American experience through the performing arts. Sankofa’s upcoming play co-produced with the Gallo Center for The Arts is A Raisin in the Sun. This classic work written by

Sankofa will continue to bring to life the African American experience, while introducing, cultivating, and mentoring a new generation of actors and behind the scenes talent from our young people in our community. been known as a central focus of excellence within the Modesto Community for years. For people of color, the center means much more than that. Year after year, people travel from all over the country to experience the ambiance of love and happiness shared by all who attend the events held in the venue. For those of you who are not familiar, February is Black History Month. African-American people reserve this month in honor to pay homage to the people and events that contributed to the positive uplifting of our culture. We celebrate Black History all twelve months of the year, but in February, we pay even closer attention to educate and inform our youth about the important African-American leaders who came before them. Presented by Audrey Spearman, (who is the writer, director, and producer of the entire show), and Sterling Fountain, (President of The King-Kennedy Memorial Center, as well as the event caterer), this powerful and dynamic Duo has mesmerized audiences with a FREE, three-hour original presentations, filled with stories of black history FOLLOW US:

from the past and the present. Black History Celebrations at The King-Kennedy Memorial Center have always been phenomenal. Performers would come to sing, or a keynote speaker would come to share a life experience. Still, there always seemed to be a little something that was missing. Eventually, Sterling and Audrey got together and decided to join forces and do something extra with the intent of encouraging more attendees to come out and see the Black History Month Celebration and they hatched a brilliant plan of execution. By creating a stage event that would keep a crowd fully engaged, catering a meal, (made by Sterling Fountain), and served by community volunteers, these women unlocked a treasure. By the end of the program, both Audrey and Sterling had each received rave reviews! Last year’s show, titled “A Walk down Memory Lane through Black Music,” included local talent selected to act out and showcase different entertainers who performed soulful music, all the way from slavery through present day. That show consisted of a vari-

ety of performances of local talent, dressed as and singing songs with the likeness of Billie Holiday, Etta James, and Diana Ross and the Supremes. None of these events could take place without the help of community volunteers such as Bruce Lockard, City Liaison and Culinary Staff Chef, Mark Kullers. Pam Brazil, Willie Mae Dill, Doris McCarter, Sarah Johnson, Beverly Jones, Diane Nichols, Janay Rivinius, The Boys & Girls Club of West Modesto, and The King-Kennedy Memorial Center Board of Directors, are all included by helping to solidify these yearly, extravagant presentations, ensuring that they continuously take place. One particular community volunteer, Helen Nettles has been regularly assisting on the culinary side for over four years. Nettles never fails to offer up her services at any time it is necessary. She enjoys coming to volunteer for as many King-Kennedy Memorial Center events as she can. Sterling Fountain put it best when she said, “The King-Kennedy Memorial Center is a place that our forefathers, from the West Side of Modesto, fought to attain and preserve, while leaving a legacy for the African-American youth to be proud of, while educating them about our rich history here. The King-Kennedy Memorial Center, stands as representation of the African-American leaders that will follow, for generations to come!”

What’s new with Jazz and the Blues News? By Eric Benson Well I hope everyone survived the Hollidaze and are on to the resolutions at hand! I haven’t got all my resolutions in hand, but what can I say it’s a work in progress. One however is to treat my body better, at 61 years young I’m beginning to feel it when I don’t. Well each day is a blessing with family and friends even if sometimes my back reminds me of when I was young weight lifting without good body mechanics. On to the new year I say, even if sometimes I am walking with a limp. Blue Monday Party invitational jam at the Barkin’ Dog Grill celebrates February 11th with special guest Conrad Johnson Bass player vocalist and front man bringing on the R & B and Funk. Love is Warhammer

One of the great things about being a geek

in Modesto is the community itself, which has steadily grown over the years and shows no signs of stopping. We have the relatively new presence of various nerd-themed stores to thank for becoming hubs for geeks to get together, discuss their favorite hobbies, and even forge new friendships by playing the games they love. And perhaps none of those games are more detailed and grandiose than “Warhammer”. Warhammer (the store, not the game), located on 3020 Floyd Avenue in Modesto, opened two years ago and has become the one-stop destination for anyone wanting to battle against friends and strangers with their armies of carefully assembled and painted miniatures. “Warhammer” is actually a sort of umbrella term that covers a variety of games, the two current most popular being “Warhammer: Age of Sigmar” and “Warhammer 40,000” which are fantasy and sci-fi themed, respectively. While there is a rich lore behind both games, it’s not required reading and players can just as easily read the rules and dive in... after building their army, of course. And arguably, assembling your units of miniatures and decorating them with paints

can be just as rewarding an experience as playing the game itself. While I was given a tour of the store by owner Ben Bird-Jones, he informed me that many people who are into “Warhammer” as a hobby find that painting the miniature figures, monsters, and landscapes is about as far as they go, rarely if ever playing the game itself. And for those amassing their forces to fight or just display, there’s a painting station in the store that’s free to use. Just bring your paints, brushes, and miniatures- or purchase them on-site from their wide selection, and you’re good to go! Walking into the store, you may find it a little intimidating at first if you have no idea how to play or what to do. Fortunately, the front of the store also serves as the location of a free demonstration you can request, where Ben walked me through an abridged how-to on everything from assembling and painting a miniature that you get to keep, no charge, to how the game is played, using a handy pre-assembled battlefield to guide me through the rules of movement and combat. With absolutely no experience in playing “Warhammer”, me and a friend found ourselves fighting each other as Space Marines versus the Death Guard, rolling dice, measuring distances, and getting just a taste of the fun that “Warhammer” games have to offer. What I noticed the most while looking around and learning to play, though, was the camaraderie shared by others in the store. War was being waged, but there’s no anger at Warhammer. Rather, it’s friends and strangers, seasoned vets and beginners, all under one roof and celebrating the hobby that’s brought them together. And if you’re curious about it like I was, Warhammer (again, the store) seems like the ideal place to start. For more information, call Warhammer at (209) 552-2318

COMEDY VIEW Hello, hello, hello. It’s February. Everyone is talking about the normal holidays like Valentine’s Day, Chinese Lunar New Year, and Black History Month. The card companies, media and what not have these covered with cards and TV specials and stuff so all the information you need is out there. The only mystery is why there is Valentine’s Day chocolate and people still buy “candy” that tastes like chalk covered in baby powder. February 2 is Groundhog’s Day which is where scientists are pushed aside so we can consult with rodents. I don’t believe this should be a holiday since vermin are notoriously bad at predictions. My gerbil hasn’t picked a winning lotto number even once. February 15 is Susan B. Anthony’s birthday. You may remember her from history class as a pioneer fighting for women’s suffrage or her later work in making dollar coins that look like quarters. Lastly, we have my personal favorite holiday: February 15 is All the Valentine’s Candy is On Sale Day. Are there any shows this month? Funny you should ask... First of all, there are two Valentine’s Day shows. First is HA HA Happy Valentine’s Day comedy show at the 108 Sports Lounge in Riverbank. Dusty Bottoms Taking it by Storm By Efren Martinez

I’ve always been a

lone wolf in my training but I can’t help wanting to shadow The Dusty Bottoms Trail Runners. This fitness group is all about running and celebrating with each other at the end of each run, generally with the beer of your choice. I don’t drink beer and quite frankly I just like to train solo when I’m focused on fitness, but that’s just me. Here’s the skinny, if you’re looking to join a running group or club in 2019 I recommend The Dusty Bottoms. If you like positive fellowship, running and not looking to break the piggy bank this is a great group to join. I’m not alone in this recommendation, so many of my running friends have joined this awesome group. They seem to have put together a great combination. Below is more information on The Dusty Bottoms Running Club and one of their fun runs scheduled for February. They meet regularly at Fuzio in 10th St Plaza on Thursday evenings for fun training runs and fellowship. 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Turner’s Tuff 10 Join in a fun run in a beautiful location! A lollipop course which will take you through an aid station twice before finishing the 11.25-mile course! Yes, we know we said “10”, but hey, who doesn’t like bonus miles! This course is rocky with a lot of technical terrains. Plan for water crossings and possibly a bit of mud. Welcome to all runners of all abilities who want to have a nice time and a change of scenery. There won’t be a clock so you will be expected to time yourself. At the end will be custom finish prizes for top 3 overall male and female finishers. Happy February By Sofia Johnson

Happy February everyone! For the month of love, I would like to share some experiences I love around Modesto. While I was in Sacramento for the Women’s March I noticed how many murals there were and was reminded of the great art scene we have here in Modesto. Of course there is the Chartreuse Muse as well as the stunning murals on their building and the Modesto mural on Downey Avenue, but there are many other locations that can be found on www.modestoview.com. Galleries and restaurants such as The Mistlin and Barkin’ Dog Grill showcase many pieces of art that I highly recommend you check out! You can also make

art of your own for or with a loved one at places such as Pottery Magic and The Dragonfly-Art for life. All of these local businesses allow for unique experiences for you to express yourself through art or enjoy the art of others. I will also be starting something that I am very excited about: I have taken the liberty of making a Spotify account where I will be posting a playlist of all ages music each month. The account username is MoViewAllAges and the first playlist is already up! Anyways, I hope you have an amazing February filled with lots of art, music, and of course, love.

2019 is the year of the female Earth Pig. From what I read this year promises to be a joyful year of friendship and love and a year to make money. In Chinese culture the Pig is a symbol for wealth. The Pig is said to attract success in all spheres of life. Your lucky numbers will be 4, 6 and 8, your lucky colors are yellow, gray, brown and golden. How do the Chinese figure this out? It beats me but I still find it intriguing! Brown is a beautiful color, the color of the earth. Of course, putting on a golden dress may impress some but to be successful certainly takes more than that. Go to the qualities of the Pig: Generosity

and gentleness. This year we will do well to express those qualities. We need to be more attentive to others. Success in 2019 is going to be based on teamwork rather than individual accomplishments. Initiating selflessness will be favored. The Pig, however has weaknesses too. It can be a dreamer and procrastinator. The Pig is known to be naive and needs to be aware of treachery. It is wise to be a little suspicious. But all in all, the Pig loves life! 2019 is a year to profit, in an intelligent sort of way, from everything that’s beautiful in life. A Scottish Celebration

Saint Andrew’s Society of Modesto presents a Scottish Celebration: The Life and Poetry of Robert Burns. Robert Burns is one of 3 celebrated Scottish authors, the others being Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson. Burns is known mostly for his poetry, and his poetry is distinctive as well as culturally and historically important. One of the major reasons Burns is considered something of a hero in Scotland is because while he wrote largely in standard English, he also wrote in Scots, a language variety that is widely spoken throughout Scotland (this is not to be confused with Gaelic, which is spoken primarily in the north). There will be Dinner, Bagpipes and other entertainment and Raffle Prizes.The event is taking place on February 22nd at the Fruityard 6 pm tickets are $40 available online at standrewmodesto.org.
