Greetings Friends

February is the month of Love. Well

heck, every month should be the month of love right? But this is a really special month at our house. Not only is this the month of love, it is Heart Health month and that means a lot to me. It is also special as both of our girls, Madison and Abigail were born in February, there is Valentine’s Day of course, but it is also about loving our community, our history, and even more important, loving the diversity that is Modesto as we celebrate Black History Month. The more you learn the more you want to know, about the places, the people and the events that shape our community and that is what I love about Modesto. We continue to celebrate the Modesto 150th. This month we are looking at the time of 1900-1920 when things really started to happen for Modesto. It was nearly a complete rebuild and so many of our monuments that we have to today were built during this time. I hope you find this as interesting as I do. Look for many new events and activities as we navigate this year to celebrate the origins of Modesto USA. Great cities celebrate their history and build on it. Authenticity is the key, and Modesto has it.

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

Another really special thing about February is the FotoModesto program. This year it features one of my favorite people, Adrian Mendoza, long time Modesto Bee photographer who has one of the most sharp and creative eyes out there. I really hope you will check out his exhibit of photojournalism, photo art and even his tweaked images at the Mistlin Gallery. He will be doing a special presentation on the 13th. We have so much artistic talent in our community, it really gives us a lot to be excited about and you know, creative cities win. And finally, this is a leap year! For those with February 29th birthdays, you get to celebrate and we hope everyone makes the best of this extra day. Take some time to check out all the cool businesses that advertise in ModestoView. These are the companies that give back, make a difference and build our local economy and create local jobs. Please support them as they make it possible for us to design, print and distribute ModestoView. ModestoView reinvests all profits back into our local events and no income is taken so we can be true to our mission of “Serving Civic Pride Daily”

Thank you for reading and telling your friends about ModestoView. Make sure you follow us on line at @modestoview on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. On the Cover

One thing is for sure, pets give unconditional love and they can be one of our best partners. Sure we celebrate our significant others this month, but we also need to celebrate our pets. On the cover this month is Lucy the Lab and rescued stray Norfolk Terrier Truman. They are there for each other, dining on pasta in Modesto’s art alley surrounded by murals. Make sure you check out our Puppy Love article and see about rescuing a dog that really needs you this month. Thank you MJ Mangano for bringing this iconic scene to life with our own Modesto twist.

Valentines for the Single People

IG @VictoriaPopoff Twitter @VictoriaPopoff

When we were in elementary school, we’d

exchange Valentines Day cards and treats to everyone in our class, giddy with excitement. It was a day to celebrate friendship, your peers and what innocent love looked like. When we all got older, it morphed into a day to celebrate romantic love with the one we chose. It became more pressure to present your loved one with red roses, chocolates, gifts and expensive dinners. But, what do all the single people do on Valentines? Some choose Ben & Jerry’s in dark depression over their independence, and some celebrate their freedom with friends. So, fear not! Here are some ideas to utilize during this season of love. In a recent Instagram poll, most women stated if they were single on Valentines, they would create a date with their friends e.g. “Galentines” or with their children. They would celebrate their freedom, and ability to love on their friends, children and peers. It ranged from board games, Rosè tasting, dinner together at home, to cheesy movies and treats. Most men polled stated they went about their day unaffected. There are lots of things going on around Modesto to embrace our single community!

- Bookies - Speed Dating - Thursday, Feb 13 - Blades & Bottles - Thursday, Feb 13 - a singles night hosted by Madden, 95.1 KHOP host - Gather your gang and join in on the “Onesie Bar Crawl” in Modesto, hitting all the local hot spots. Feb 15 - Take a fitness class with your friends! Grab a workout at Orange Theory and a healthy drink at Nektar, the new smoothie bar. - Grab a ticket to the live music of Sankofa Theatre: Seven Gutairs at the Gallo Center. Feb 14-16 - Take a spa day, get a facial or massage to destress and pamper yourself. If you can’t find something to do, to celebrate the independence you have, create something! Invite your friends over, feel grateful for friendships and toast to that! Reach out! I’d love to hear about your Valentine’s ideas and solutions!

PUPPY LOVE VIEW Shelter Pets We know that some of our closest

loved ones on Valentine’s Day are the pets we celebrate and take care of everyday! They love us unconditionally. If you are married, single or looking, Valentine’s Day is always good when you have your pets. As in real life, there is a match out there waiting for you, and in case, needing you. Did you know that it is both super easy, super cost effective, and super rewarding to rescue a pet here in Modesto? Harrison and I rescued Truman, our dapper coverdog this month with the classic bow tie, from the Stanislaus County Animal Services Shelter out on Cornucopia Way. All animals are listed on their website and updated hourly to help you know if the right pet is available for rescue. Each pet has a number or a name that you can write down and take with you to the shelter so that you can meet and get to know your new potential pet. Or, if you just want to browse the shelter, you can walk in and see which animal speaks the most to you. When we rescued Truman, we worked with the most wonderful staff and we were able to adopt and rescue Truman within a couple days, for only $100 (+ just $12 for neutering). That saved us FOLLOW US:

literally THOUSANDS of dollars when we thought about the option of a “perfect” posh dog, but it turns out our little stray found on 2nd Street on Thanksgiving was the perfect guy for us! His teeth were worn from eating rocks, but he was healthy and loving and he truly needed to find a family. Pro Tip: All animals are adopted on a first come, first serve basis – so make sure you get there early on the day your pet is “available” to make sure you get who you want. Also, the Stanislaus County Animal Services Shelter is a no kill shelter! That means they do not euthanize when they are overfilled or at capacity and work with other shelters to make sure everyone has a chance to be adopted. Win, Win! Artist Open Studio

It is that love month, February. This year with an extended leap day along with Valentine’s Day. More time to express love for art and local artists. That love of art and artists and art events, main reason I write this column. After mourning losses last month with the year change, the closing of Tri-Chromatic Gallery, and moving on for the Shire Community I love the fact that both groups continuing pop-up events, concerts, shows and special events. Art is not tied to any one location. If we take a seeking art tour of Modesto, you find it all around town. Look for both on Facebook and Instagram and our Modesto View Calendar. Stanislaus Artist Open Studio is FREE admission this year, free access to in print maps, and first time available online. If you see a free map, pick it up. Check it out. Keep it for reference to contact artists, visit studios and display locations, during Stanislaus Artist Open Studio weekend. Share with friends and plan your visit in advance. 64 local artists participating this year, with different media specialties, different work spaces. The adventure originated nine years ago with the Stanislaus County Travel and Tourism Roundtable to invite the public to meet the artists in our area, where they work and create, outside the usual gallery and formal display experience. Art lovers get to know us better, get to know our work and what goes into it. I hope to have my carport conversion to my art studio workspace finished a few months in advance, so it shows off new projects and old, with space for my fellow artist Richard J Bradshaw. There will be galleries and other venues making room for artists to participate, show you what venues in the know on our local art scene. Look for the maps by March 1, the FOLLOW US:

Open Studio weekend is April 25 and 26. Invite friends to join the party, in town or out of area. I love art education. One of the Art scenes I don’t cover enough are the galleries and resources, events at Stanislaus State and Modesto Junior College art departments. MJC has an ongoing change in student created murals, and dedicated Art Club and student shows in the East Campus gallery. Stanislaus State Art Department gallery just finished a show of Turlock Regional High School Student art, the up and coming artists. There are classes for students and adults at Chartreuse Muse, Mistlin Gallery, Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock, Modesto Conservatory of Music, Art and Theater on 10th Street, Dragonfly Art for Life on J. There are numerous paint nights going on for recreation, and for learning more. That includes a new spot in Riverbank that I will get more info on soon. Modesto has location for easy access to pretty good art resources in the 209. Multicultural Center in Merced, to Haggin Museum in Stockton. A cadre of Modesto area Artists will be showing in the annual Tracy Art League Expressions show, or annual fine art show at Delicato Winery in Manteca. February in recent years has ben FOTO Modesto, our 209 love of photographers and photography. I love that beginning February 4, Adrian Mendoza will have a retrospective 45 years show of his works on display at Mistlin Gallery through February 28 with a special conversation with Adrian on the 13th. Renegade Brewing Supplies to Host Desert Fox Brewing

Fifteen years ago, Luke Henslick had just

left Holland from serving in the military and Megan his wife, was longing for the beer they left behind. Searching for anything reminiscent of comparable flavor left them empty-handed. “I got him a kit for Christmas that year. But we went to brew it, we realized we didn’t have a pot big enough so it’s 7 pm and we go to Bed Bath and Beyond to find a 2 and a half gallon pot. It was also really rough brewing a beer that late at night, but we didn’t know!” says Megan. Luke chimes in, “I asked her, ‘How will I know when the water is boiling?’ And she promptly kicked me out of the kitchen.” That late-night led to a drinkable beer and the birth of two brewers. After 4 years, they were taking brewing very seriously and winning competitions. They had the opportunity to buy a little homebrew shop in New Bern, North Carolina-a town of maybe 30k people-and they took it. Laughing Luke says, “We thought we are either crazy or we’re going to make this work. We made it work.” Life eventually moved the Henslicks to California and in 2017 they opened Renegade in Turlock and then found their new home last month at 400 I Street, Modesto. They moved to the new spot to open a small brewery alongside their shop and they continue their small town attitude by treating every customer like a long-lost friend. “We started by treating every customer like the only person we would see all day, so it was like, hey, hang out and chat with us, let’s drink a beer.” Says Luke, “We offered what they couldn’t get online, a friend, a handshake, being a positive resource in the community, being an open-source of brewing information. And here we are, we made it.” Luke reiterates that Megan is the artist of the two-he boasts about her ability to come up with recipes and grain bills and says he is just the guy who picks the hops and yeast. But don’t let that humbleness fool you, yeast and hops are equally important to the grain bill when making a beer. Making beer might sound intimidating but you can make a one-gallon batch at home on your stove; you don’t need fancy equipment! All you need is a drive to learn and a little bit of imagination. You can enter this hobby with barely an investment and still make great beer. “This is basically grain tea that you add hops to,

GRAFFITI USA VIEW

We are bringing 1962 back! What’s your story? Were you there? By Chris Murphy

by Christopher Mitchell and Brandilyn Brown it’s very basic and from there you can get creative,” Megan tells us. MV: What do you want people to know about Renegade? Luke: First and foremost, we are a homebrew shop. Once we open as a brewery, we’ll still be your local homebrew store. It’s my goal to be a brewing university and take on apprenticeships to teach and give back and then release educated brewers into the field. I’m very passionate about education. So many brewers make one batch of beer and because it isn’t perfect they give up. This is a very challenging hobby and the discouragement I see hurts me. I don’t like seeing people not want to be creative. I’ve had some of the best beers of my life brought in by customers. I enjoy them so much more than anything you could find at BevMo. MV: What beer is your favorite to drink or gives you the most inspiration? Luke: I don’t have a favorite, it all depends on my mood, geographical location, what’s local, but I never turn down a Brew Free or Die IPA from 21st Amendment. I would say my inspiration is a Hops of Wrath from Dust Bowl. Megan: A Dutch Heineken is very nostalgic to me, it’s clean, just a beautiful pilsner and it’s nothing like the Heineken we have here. I think anything can be my greatest inspiration; I will sometimes drink a beer and think oh, I can’t wait to make this myself. Follow them on Facebook for updates on Desert Fox Brewing (Set to open by next Spring) and for information on their classes and when they host homebrew club meetings. If you are wanting to try their beer before then (cause who wants to wait that long?!) visit Crust & Crumb at 428 E Main St Turlock on a Thursday night. Get their course dinner for $12 and you’ll get a Henslick brewed beer with your dinner! Mark your calendar for their Grand Opening February 29th from 10 am to 6 pm, where there will be food pairings by Crust & Crumb.

There is only one home of American

Graffiti in the whole galaxy and it’s here in Modesto USA. This is were George Lucas grew up, went to school, created his stories and raced his cars and then went to Modesto JC before heading off to USC film school and then changed the cinematic world forever. A group of local businesspeople and car and history fans have gotten together to create a place to celebrate our Graffiti, Car and Music culture. The Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum is a 501(c)3 corporation and is now ready to bring this to life! The museum will celebrate our love affair with the automobile, celebrate the 10th and 11th streets that were home to Modesto’s cruising experience. It will bring to life a night in 1962, immerse the visitors in the sights and sounds of the Graffiti USA experience. Guests will be able to walk the “10th” Street, check out KFIV radio station, check out the stores of the time, go to the Drive In and even eat in a functional recreation of our classic diners. We will celebrate our Legends of the Cruise and will create a place that will

attract classic fans from around the world and build an educational center that will excite the next generation of little cruisers. This interactive museum experience will tell more of the stories that created the Graffiti days. The Graffiti USA museum needs you, your donations, your ideas, you collectibles and possibly even your cars. We are looking for community minded people to help up build this museum and make it a reality. Hopefully soon, there will be a new building to house this museum and we need you. Please visit www.graffitiusemuseum.com and see what is happening and to make a tax-deductible donation. Isn’t it past time that we bring our history to life, create this place for the people of the entire world to come visit? You can help us tell our story, change our future and become the Graffiti USA center of the universe. Please join and donate today at www.graffitiusamuseum.com For more information - info@graffitiusamuseum.com

W E I V F E H for great “Q” C it ’s Doc’s

By Tasha Williams / Photos by Middagh Goodwin Hey Positive Peeps! It has been a while since I have shared a “Fun Food Ride” with you guys and it sure

feels good to be back! I couldn’t have returned at a better time either, because I’m covering my favorite food subject: SOUL FOOD! Nothing says, “YAAAAAAAS,” like some good old-fashioned Soul Food and nothing says Soul Food, like Modesto’s own Doc’s Q’In Pit Shop! Doc’s restaurant has the best barbecue in the Stanislaus County and with the business being open here locally for more than fifteen years - that has to tell you something! Doc’s Q’In Pit Shop came about by way of the owner, Derek Taylor’s uncle. Mr. Taylor’s uncle was known as a great cook and people always told him how much they enjoyed his food. As time passed, numerous people encouraged him to open a restaurant and finally, he did. Now don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of different factors that come into play when I attempt to explain the wonderful thoughts that cross my mind when describing my opinion about the elements of flavor I experience from the very moment that I begin to enjoy an extraordinarily delicious meal. I mean sure, we all enjoy eating good food, but at Doc’s, things are a little different. . . . First of all, the meat, seasoned to absolute flavorful perfection, is out of this world! Honestly, I have a hard time explaining it without telling you that you simply MUST go and try it out for yourself. Otherwise, you just won’t believe me! I’m talking ribs, tri-tip, hot links, chicken, fried fish, black eyed peas, collard greens, yams, barbecue beans, macaroni and cheese, and peach cobbler! You can never exclude their peach cobbler! Is your mouth watering yet? I know it is! But you need not worry, I’m going to provide you with the address shortly! Erika Taylor, the owner’s stunningly beautiful and gracious daughter was kind enough to talk with us while I continued eating my desert, (a bowl of peach cobbler)! I say “us” because as usual, I was not alone on my “Fun Food Ride.” This time, my regular food companion, (famed local photographer), Michael J Mangano, was unable to join me. Instead, I asked Modesto View Magazine’s very own Middagh Goodwin to come along. It’s always a treat spending time with Middagh because he and I share the same off-brand type of humor. He enjoyed his meal just as much as I did. Chicken was his pleasure, while I enjoyed the ribs! He passed up on desert though, and to this very day, I cannot understand that! Who skips peach cobbler at a Soul Food Restaurant? Still, I respect his will power, that’s for sure! As Middagh and I continued to converse with Erika, I asked her what she loved most about being at Doc’s through the years. She responded, “The people. I love seeing them enjoying our food. That’s what keeps me happy.” Her happiness is contagious too. Erika’s smile is genuine and meaningful. So if ever you’re coming down Highway 132, (on a Tuesday through Sunday, between the hours of 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM), stop in and have a meal at Doc’s Q’In Pit Shop. Located at 421 Maze Boulevard, Modesto, CA 95351, the food will have your taste buds jumping for joy and craving more! Stop in and have a chat with Erika! I promise - you’ll be glad you did! UNPLUGGED VIEW Forces Of Nurture

“Any form of classical music is made for youth.” - Ilaiyaraaja

By Aaron Rowan

February Movies

This Valentine’s Day I’ll be celebrating

one year of hosting music at The Dragonfly Art For Life on J St. I have found the crew of this unique art gallery for be the nicest and best to work with of any venue where I’ve set up my various series. Last year’s theme was the ‘Friday Night Folk Flight,’ but a new decade calls for a new direction. The Dragonfly is now the official home of the Modesto Unplugged Young Artist Series, which began last summer as a monthly happening but will now take place each weekend. Students in junior high through college are devising and starring in their own recital programs for us, both vocal and instru-

mental. Several of these have won awards at ‘Valley Talent Project,’ including last year’s Grand Prize champion. February 14 will feature Zoey Rae, the only double prize winner from VTP 2019; followed on 2/22 by Jacob DeBow who recently appeared in ‘Broadway Dreams’ at the Gallo Center; and on 2/28, Elizabeth Barton, a graduate of the Summer Opera Institute who made her solo debut last fall in Opera Modesto’s RIGOLETTO. Music starts at 7:30pm on Fridays and 3pm on Saturdays, with $10 admission at the door. I know my fair share of teen talent, but will still need to find plenty of fresh voices to keep this going week-to-week,

so if any promising Young Artist comes to mind as you read this, I hope you’ll bid them connect with me at modestounplugged@yahoo.com. Where else can you enjoy the next generation of vocalists and songwriters this month? Opera Modesto is a good start - they also have an excellent young artist series which put on two of the best concerts to take place at Moon & Sixpence last year. Sunday 2/2, 2pm at the Mistlin Gallery, the kids will put on a ‘Valentine’s On Groundhog Day’ program. Admission $30 general, $20 student, $50 VIP table seats. Buy tickets at www.operamodesto. org. That same night at Moon & Sixpence, local award-winning youth rock band Esoteric opens for touring orchestral-folk group Her Crooked Heart. 7 PM, $10 at the door. Saturday February 8, my friend Lisette Sims hosts a recital featuring the students of her vocal studio, a few of whom I’ve poached for my own series. Free concert at 4 PM, at Turlock Covenant Church, 316 S. Laurel St. in Turlock. Let’s hear it for organizations like this which nurture the musical theatre stars of tomorrow. Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. MODESTO UNPLUGGED. www.modestounplugged.com.

Sterling Fountain W E I V ER

INT

Interview by Tasha Wilson

I should not be doing a simple article/ interview on the history of the family lineage that Mrs. Sterling Fountain has here in Modesto, California. Instead, I should be writing a book about her life! Better yet, I should be drafting a movie script! Surely, her story would follow-up with an Oscar Award-winning film. I have had the privilege of knowing Mrs. Fountain since I was a child. Still, I had no idea about her beautifully rich African-American family history. She began sharing it with me, during an easy and laid back Friday afternoon conversation, held at Modesto’s King Kennedy Center, (where she serves, as a member of the board). For me to give you a full picture of why an interview with Mrs. Sterling Fountain is important to have for the history of Modesto, and why her genealogy is so relevant for the African-American youth in our community, I must start from the beginning. So get comfortable, and allow me to introduce you to Mrs. Sterling Fountain. Here, you will learn how Modesto, California came to be a precious piece of the heart and soul that lies within her. ModestoView: How did your family first settle here? Sterling Fountain: My grandmother, Mrs. Willie Mae Williams, came here initially from Ventura. The family she worked for was related to the owners of the JC Penny Company and when they were asked to transfer to the Modesto JC Penny Company location, my grandmother came too. My father didn’t come at first, but arrived in 1936, at the age of 15. MV: What obstacles did AfricanAmericans face during the early days in Modesto? SF: There were quite a few that I can recall. It was sometimes made difficult for blacks to better themselves here. In 1955/1956, the city was expanding and the freeway would soon be going through the area where my grandmother’s house was located on 6th and K Street. Due to the upcoming construction of the freeway, her family received a settlement. The settlement enabled them to purchase about four acres of land where they would soon have contractor’s build them a new home – from the ground

14

up! Sadly though, (as a black buyer), in order for her to view the property, she had to see it at night. There was no way for her to view it in daylight because the neighbors would not have been able to accept the shock of seeing the first black family having the possibility of living on their street. Well, when it finally came to the move-in date, the neighbors thought my grandmother and her family were the help! When they found out that she was actually the homeowner, the whole street got together and financially offered her the amount she paid to purchase the home – in order for her family NOT to move in. She refused the offer! MV: Wow! It sounds as though your grandmother was business minded even back then! She turned what was meant to be an obstacle, into a major milestone! What other milestones did your family make after getting their feet planted here? SF: Very often, there were a lot of fun things that black people couldn’t do

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

in this city back then. My grandmother made sure that black families had a place to go. At the time, black people were forbidden to stay in hotels, so my grandmother made sure she kept one room in her home open for black families who were passing through, and she always made sure there was a pot of food too! MV: I know that for me, it is very heartwarming and enjoyable to hear these stories about your grandmother. I love the fact that you have similar qualities in your personality that your grandmother instilled within you. Can you tell me more about the milestones your grandmother achieved here in Modesto? SF: Yes. In the 50’s, there were many places that we were not allowed to enter. There was even a roller rink and a public pool that were closed to us. But my grandmother changed all of that! She decided to build a pool in her back yard! Kids would come and swim for 10 cents, a nickel, a penny, or for free – (if they couldn’t afford it). My grandmother just wanted to make sure everyone felt loved and included.

MV: That helps me understand where your kindness comes from even further! Do you think Modesto is thriving now, compared to the way it was back then? SF: Yes, I think Modesto keeps getting better and the unity we have within the African-American community is what keeps us strong! MV: Thank you for sharing about your family and my final question is our Modesto View Magazine signature question. I am always required to ask it at the end of every interview. This question comes from the editor himself, Mr. Chris Murphy: Beatles or Rolling Stones? SF: What? Neither! And please, tell Chris to instead include four choices in the future. For example; Aretha Franklin or Ray Charles OR Beatles or Rolling Stones. On a personal level, I would like to end this article with a story about Mrs. Fountain’s first name. The beautiful name “Sterling” is not a common one, and the way her name came about is yet another beautiful story. You see, prior to her birth, her mother had given birth to two other children. Both children were born with disabilities. On her day of birth, the doctors were looking her over and informed her parents that their new bundle of joy was completely healthy. Her parents repeatedly asked, “Are you sure? Is she really okay?” They would have loved her just the same, but naturally, they were anxious and concerned. After her father had calmed with his questions, the doctor turned to him and said, “Yes. She is perfect. She is Sterling!” That is how she got her name. The dictionary defines the word this way: ‘Sterling: (of a person or their work, efforts, or qualities) excellent or valuable, conforming to the highest standard.’ The story behind Mrs. Fountain’s name means so much to her heart and she tries to live her life matching that definition. Everything she does is “sterling” and for that, she is one of the most highly respected and loved people in Modesto’s AfricanAmerican community and she 100% lives up to her name. We thank you, we honor your life, and we love you STERLING FOUNTAIN, we really do! Learn more about how you can get involved with making sure our community is truly unified and connected.

February is Black History Month

By Tasha Williams Photo by Greg Savage

Tasha is the Human Services Program Mentor at Modesto Junior College, as well as a contributing writer for Modesto View. She is also one of the actresses in this month’s presentation of playwright August Wilson’s Seven Guitars

February is Black History Month and Modesto View is focusing and shining a light on great African American leaders, interwoven within our city, who are accomplishing incredible things. I am a bit partial to this spotlight section, as these two women were of my own personal selection, and are women I happen to know on a professional level. Both women are employees of Modesto Junior College. The first, Dr. Cheryl Williams-Jackson is my Supervisor/Boss, while the other is my friend, Lakeisha McDonald. While both of these women work at Modesto Junior College, the extension of their community outreach is much farther and neither of these women can be placed in a box! Dr. Cheryl Williams-Jackson is the Program Coordinator and a Professor of Human Services at MJC. Also the CEO of her own company, WJ Developmental Consulting, her organization takes a good look at D.E.I., (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion), within the educational and mental health community. Her goal is to build a bridge between both professions and people, helping to enable a better understanding to others when it comes to mental health issues, and this includes families. In addition to WJ Consulting, for the past five years, through the BANDTEC ECE Equity Institute, (an Oakland based organization), Dr. Jackson has been a lead educator. Through PITC, (Program for Infant Toddler Care), A Collaboration of The California Department of Education and WestEd, Dr. Jackson teaches other educators techniques on how to bring equity into their classrooms. Through educating other instructors, Dr. Jackson travels the country giving these seminars, providing an opportunity for them to reflect upon their own work, as she is a strong believer that, “Helper’s need help too.” If you would like to come and meet Dr. Cheryl Williams-Jackson live and in person, she will be a panelist at the upcoming MLK Panel Discussion on Thursday, January 20, 2020, in the Student Center. Then, on Saturday, February 29, 2020, at 5:00 PM, Dr. Jackson will be the MC for the 2020 MJC African American Education Conference. That will take place on MJC’s West Campus, in the Mary Stuart Rogers Building.

LaKiesha McDonald is the Career Services Program Specialist at Modesto Junior College. She too is a dynamic force to be reckoned with! Modesto Junior College picks up the “Positive Speaker, Stories of Inspiration and Motivation” Series again this year and LaKiesha McDonald will be the speaker. Ms. McDonald is also a business owner and is the CEO of LRM GrowthSolutions. She provides organizational collaborations with large corporations and teaches professional development and training strategies, while contributing to the uplifting and empowerment felt within the hearts of each and every person she is fortunate enough to connect with. Affectionately known for her business hashtag/catchphrase, (#wewinningeveryday), it rings 100% true when you hear LaKiesha McDonald’s story! Her talk: Thursday, February 6, 2020 at 7:00 PM, MJC’s West Campus, Mary Stewart Rogers Building. These African-American woman desire to give “Heart Help” at every turn! Pioneer in the field of sports civil rights, Dr. Harry Edwards will speak the 26th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration on Saturday, February 22 at Modesto Junior College, East Campus at 7:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. He will meet with students at 4:00 p.m. at the King-Kennedy Memorial Center, 601 S. Martin Luther King, Dr., Modesto. At 5:00 p.m. there will be an open reception there The Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Award will be presented to Frank Ploof by Leng Power for his years of community service to the homeless. These events are FREE so the public can attend but costs are considerable. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation payable to “Modesto Peace/Life Center-MLK,” and send it to Jim Costello, 1849 Richard Way, Ceres, CA 95307-4504. Seven Guitars / Feb 14 - 16 - Gallo Center for the Arts

Sankofa Theatre Company’s previous productions of August Wilson plays—Fences and The Piano Lesson— thrilled Gallo Center audiences. Their presentation of Wilson’s Seven Guitars is sure to do the same. The play, published in 1995, focuses on seven African American characters in the year 1948. The play begins and ends after the funeral of one of the main characters, showing events leading to the funeral in flashbacks. Seven Guitars represents the 1940s entry in Wilson’s “Pittsburgh Cycle,” a decade-by-decade anthology of African-American life in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania during the 20th century. The play was critically acclaimed for its exploration of African American struggles with identity and self-acceptance, winning a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play.

Modesto really got it in gear as the 1900s began. After the wild times of the late1800s and the devastating fires, the commerce and trade really began to get going with the rebuilding, the success of irrigation and civilized culture rolled in. Modesto had electricity, air service, sewers and theatres! Let’s recap and talk about 1900-1919 with our friend and historian Carl Baggese. Let’s review

By Carl Baggese

Early photo of Modesto train station

One of the trains that took visitors on a trip through the irrigated farmland of Stanislaus County during Modesto’s 1904 Irrigation Jubilee. Modesto’s first electric lights were turned on for the event.

For the first thirty years after its found-

ing in 1870 by the Central Pacific Railroad, Modesto had been a wild west village, not much different than those places envisioned by western writer, Max Brand, who had lived with his uncle, Thomas Downey, in the town during his formative years. The young Frederick Faust never forgot his western experiences and used them over and over again in his many stories, including “Destry” and “Destry Rides Again.” Modesto’s Front Street became home to saloons and brothels, and its China Alley a place of opium dens. The streets were muddy quagmires in the winter and dusty horse routes in the hot summer. It was a hearty soul who ventured into the town and traversed the wooden sidewalks in front of its establishments. By the 1890s, a vigilante group, the San Joaquin Regulators, had cleaned up most of the town and a semblance of order. The early 20th Century would see unprecedented change in the community.

A new century! January 1, 1901 brought with it a new century which would mark, at its beginning, incredible growth for Modesto as Stanislaus County’s commercial hub. The county seat was located in the middle of prime agricultural land, which would become a breadbasket to the world since irrigation finally brought stable and varied crops to the fertile region. The growth in these early

16

years reflected the prosperity of the country as a whole. In the 1890s a series of fires destroyed the earliest buildings in Modesto, some of which had been brought to town at its founding from nearby Tuolumne City and Paradise. The final block of early structures located at 11th and I Streets went up in flames in November of 1901. Modesto was now a clean slate for new, modern structures as the forerunners of a booming downtown. Soon hotels, banks, offices, apartments, shops and entertainment venues would join the remaining existing structures, all becoming a retail and cultural magnet for the growing population. There were hospitals and churches to address the needs of body and soul, and early entrepreneurs built new businesses that flourished and grew with the bounty of the region. The early years of the new century can be put into perspective by looking at the Fourth of July celebration in 1911. When reading George Henry Tinkham’s 1921 book “History of Stanislaus County”, the festive nature comes to life. “The natal day of the nation was celebrated in a splendid manner. The previous evening the band gave a concert in the courthouse park. Early in the morning an immense crowd began assembling from the surrounding country and plenty of amusements had been provided for their

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

entertainment. In the afternoon there was an aeroplane flight, dancing, broncho busting, parade of ‘horribles’ and a carnival dance in the evening in Rodgers Hall. During the morning, following the parade, literary exercises were held in the plaza . . . with Miss Caroline Foley as reader of the Declaration of Independence, and Edward F. Taylor, poet and reader of San Francisco, as orator. During the exercises the chorus sang several patriotic selections, among them ‘Hail to the Flag,’ composed by the director of the chorus, Professor Twicher.” Modesto was first chartered as a “city of the fifth class (under 4,000 population) on August 1, 1884. The incorporation of the city resulted in law and order being brought to what, up to that time, had been a wild western town. After the depression of the 1890s, Modesto began to blossom again with growth and prosperity. By 1910, work began on a new charter to revise the governmental structure of the growing community. Tinkham reflects on the new charter in his “History of Stanislaus County” (1921): “After twenty-six years of [political] party city government, during which time the saloons and gamblers dominated every election, the citizens resolved to try what was known as the commission form of government . . . The charter, which was ratified by the voters September 10, 1910, provided for the election of a mayor and four trustees. A board of education, five in number, was also elected by the citizen voters. Additionally, the new government could “purchase land for any public purpose for buildings, parks, playgrounds, theaters, art gallery, swimming pools, in fact, anything desirable or useful for the public, and erect buildings thereon.” Modesto also took a first step into a totally new realm when it

included in the charter the possibility of creating a city-owned airfield. (This was 1910, seven years after the Wright Flyer had flown at Kitty Hawk). Thus, Modesto was the first city in the nation to recognize the possibilities inherent in the future of flight. With a new form of city government in place and new city officials elected on June 5, 1911, the city of Modesto entered a period that marked phenomenal growth in the downtown core, along with a great population increase of 94% for Stanislaus County and 129% for Modesto between the years of 1911 and 1921. The city was well-prepared to weather any calamity including a World War and the Spanish flu pandemic of the teens. From 1900 to 1920, Modesto gained many landmarks, among them “The Memorial Arch of Prosperity” completed in 1912 over I Street and 9th by the Modesto Businessman’s Association, a forerunner to today’s Chamber of Commerce. On its 100th anniversary in 2012 it was refurbished and LED lights were added to make the slogan,

C.C. Wright, father of irrigation and a state assemblyman from Modesto. Wrote the Wright Irrigation Act

Modesto Municipal Field, dedicated in 1919. It was located on Tuolumne Boulevard where the Municipal Golf Course (soon to be sold) is now located. It was later renamed Coffee Field in honor of Harold “Bud” Coffee who died in an airplane crash in 1921.

The Hughson Hotel (corner of J and 10th Sts.). Built by Louella Hughson, the widow of the founder of the city of Hughson, the hotel opened in 1914

This is the Panama Pacific Road Race in 1913. A 444-mmile race from Los Angeles to Sacramento. The race cars are passing under Modesto’s new “Prosperity Arch.” The race was won by Frank Verbeck driving a Fiat for Barney Oldfield – who reached speeds of 110 miles an hour

The forerunner to today’s MoBand, the Modesto Boys Band was founded in 1919 by William W. Higgins.

“Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health” standout. That same year, as a result of a bequest from Oramil McHenry’s will, Modesto gained a library at 14th and H Streets. The building served as a library until the 1970s when a new building replaced it. The library became the McHenry Museum. In 1914 Modesto was big enough to support a residence hotel with a basement ballroom and all the fittings of the more elaborate hotels of bigger cities. Henry T. Crow and his partner, Oscar Hogin, built their four-story hotel at the corner of 11th and H Street. Over the years the Hotel Modesto was expanded to five stories and was in the midst of another expansion in 1944 when it burned in a spectacular fire. Prior to the opening of the Hotel Modesto, Louella Hughson opened the Hughson Hotel at the corner of 10th and J Streets. Designed by Bernard J. Joseph who had designed the Modesto arch, the hotel boasted 98 rooms, a tiled indoor swimming pool and a fine restaurant. Southern Pacific Railroad, the successor to the Central Pacific, built a new passenger station blocking J Street between 8th and 9th streets. Taking their lead from St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, which had been completed in 1913, the new station was designed in a California-Spanish style. Other landmarks built during the period of growth included the Modesto Theatre on 10th Street, a venue for live performances and silent movies. After opening in 1913, a fire destroyed the interior, but it was quickly rebuilt by owner, William B. Mensinger. Modesto made good on its charter promise of a municipal airfield by taking land originally set aside for the county fairgrounds on Tuolumne Boulevard to create Modesto Municipal Aviation Field (later Coffee Field) and now a city golf course (sadly soon to be closed). By November 11, 1920, Modesto was ready to celebrate not only the second Armistice Day after the end of World War I, but also the city’s 50th Anniversary. Over 30,000 people attended (the city’s population was 9,241). Eight of the 60 parade floats depicted the history of the city. Some 2,000 marchers took part. The Modesto Municipal Aviation Field was dedicated and war ace Eddie Rickenbacker flew in to help celebrate. The Evening News called it “the greatest gathering of airplanes ever held in California. Historian Colleen Stanley Bare says that Casey Stengel’s National League All-Stars played the Modesto Reds baseball team, with the first ball dropped from an airplane! There were vaudeville shows, band concerts, fireworks, street dancing, and a masquerade ball. Modesto had come a long way in its first 50 years. FOLLOW US:

Brand New Year

By Middagh Goodwin It is a brand new year and what kind of resolutions as musicians, have you made? Are you going to play out more, record a new album or release a video for a new single? It is important to make plans and follow through to develop not just as an artist but your fanbase. Even mixing up the setlist you have been using for years, add a fun or unique cover or even better some new originals or old favorites that you have not played in a while. Get some new promo pictures or for some of you get some promo pictures taken. Work on your press kit and start using it. Winter is a slow time of year for gigging so why not get prepared for the Spring and Summer so you can start booking those festivals and outdoor concert dates. It is also a perfect time to work on new merch for all those shows you will hopefully be playing. Remember to email events@modestoview.com so we can add them all to our calendar. Speaking of gigs did you know that one of the missions of the Modesto Area Music Association is booking several events each year? We curate Music in the Plaza, PatioFest, The Sampler, the Center Stage at the Stanislaus County Fair and Third Thursday Artwalk. Hearts and flowers, the ultimate culmination for the Church of the NFL, a groundhog, some dead presidents, letting the good times roll, the Day the Music Diedall worthy of observance this month, this Leap Year, this last time before the thaw. February ushers out the frigid temps and lull and becomes a harbinger for a sense of revival. ANTICIPATION. As a Musician, the start of a new year, a new season always creates hype. Songwriters take inventory of their muse and start giving life to their projects. In these parts, it’s no secret that every Central Valley born and bred musician wants to bring their artistry to the coveted venues in our own backyard. Every now and again an opportunity presents itself and this dream gig materializes. On Saturday, February 8 at 8 pm, one such moment will happen at the Gallo Center For The Arts. Joe Barretta & The Modesto All-Star Band will perform a concert as eclectic as it is supreme. All the folks in the scene know Joe, played

Waiting For Our Ship By Patty Castillo Davis music with him or have heard his work in television and film. He is a local boy made good by way of San Francisco by way of Detroit, so his influences are an array of sounds and styles and then he hand-selected a support team, this band of homegrown musicians who are a Who’s Who in the scene for their specific virtuosity. David Rogers-percussion Guru, Patty Castillo Davis a Singer’s Singer of every style, Steve Ashman-a bandleader bassist who has worked with the greats, Tim Allen a keys player with the repertoire of a jukebox and very special guests Gary Nelson and Marlon Yamzon. Stuff like this only happens once in a great while and then it’s gone. Bring your family and friends to hear the best Modesto and much of the region has to offer. For one night only. FIT VIEW

Health Versus Wealth By Efren Martinez

It’s February and time has flown right by us since we made those New Year’s Resolution to eat healthier, exercise and lose some weight. Last month you were all in and hit the gym running. You’re not alone if by now you’ve pushed those healthy resolutions aside. Back in January you were determined to fit in those skinny jeans once again. You were on track, exercised regularly and worked hard. Perhaps way too hard. This is most likely why you crashed and burned. The mistake many of us make is that we think we can start a fitness program at the speed of light, just like when we were kids. If this is you, surprise, you’ve aged. Let’s face it, you are exhausted and by now going to the gym is comparable to getting a tooth pulled. No fun! In order to re-ignite your New Year’s fitness resolution, you need to step back and focus on a new plan. Back when I was extremely obese and unhealthy I was realistic with how to reach my fitness goals. Even if I wanted, there was no way I could run as I use to when I was a kid. Lifting weights wasn’t a healthy alternative for me either. I just got too tired. My advice to you is to start slow. Instead of joining a gym first take a nutrition class. Knowing that 70% to 80% of losing weight is knowing what to eat and when

to eat it, depending on your metabolic rate, that is the real key to success. It’s also much easier to eat healthier instead of exercising yourself to the point of exhaustion. But wait! Fitness is also important. Instead of hitting the gym like an Olympian right out of the gate, ease into it by walking for time instead of distance. Start with 10 to 20 minutes a day at a normal pace. Then increase your pace and time gradually. Once you have started to see results and it getting easier, start to pick up the pace to a jog, then run. If running isn’t for you, try cycling with the same concept. Time versus distance. If fitness isn’t something you can do for whatever reason, it’s OK. You can still get amazing results just by sticking to daily healthy nutrition. Bottom line is that counting calories works extremely well and that’s how I was able to lose so much weight so quickly without exercise. Read more online

February is where the heart is!

It’s said that home is where the heart is and

there’s plenty of love to go around in our hometown. Ms. M has spent this winter morning enjoying a Mocha at Preservation Coffee before devoting a little love to her favorite downtown Modesto locales. While taking a stroll in the wonderfully cool weather, she wonders why more people don’t devote a little love into their own neighborhood when it has so much to offer. There are so many things to enjoy in Modesto and February is a great time to fall in love with all that our hometown has to offer you without going over your budget. The romance with words begins on February1st at the 8th Annual Modesto Poetry Festival. The all day festival will convene at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with its popular Poetry Contest, Luncheon and Workshop. This year’s festival welcomes Lee Herrick and Camille Norton as its guest poets. 9:30am-4pm. Tickets GA: $35/MoSt members: $30/Students: $10. On February 15th at 4:30pm, the Valentine’s Day themed Pub Crawl kicks off at St. Stan’s Brewery. The event encourages and gives everyone a heart (sticker) to wear for the event. Each color is a conversation starter, (Pink=Single, Purple=Ask me, and Red=Here for a beer) and a great way to meet new people. Come out and put a heart on it, wear anyting with a heart or valentine’s themed. 21+ Lyft encouraged for participants. Check in: 4pm at St. Stan’s. No Door Tickets. Online Tickets: $12 or 2 for $20. Benevolence By Mary Layton

Do you know that song “Show me what love is“? Just heard it again the other day on AGT. Pets, no doubt, are the best in showing us what love is. Thank God for them. But when it comes to relationships with humans many of us wonder what

love is, how to find it, how to keep it. We have been told that the prerequisite of being able to love another person is first to be able to love oneself. Not an easy task. I had this inkling that the path to love would be helped a lot by a willingness to be doing good to others. I started to think about benevolence, a disposition and desire to do good. To be benevolent takes strength and energy. I think when we are feeling cranky kindness is hard to come by, so is the ability to listen and respect other people’s choices. What takes our strength away? I believe it is what we have been focusing on in our thoughts. Maybe we have been condemning ourselves or others for their imperfections, may be we have been impatient or had unrealistic expectations, tried to force a certain outcome or fix someone else’s problems, or may be we worked too hard or been too busy. All these things can make a person loose sight of the goodness and love in their lives. Being kind and forgiving, helping people and good causes on the other hand, does feel really wonderful. One day at a time, moment to moment; Awareness and willingness to do good to ourselves and others can turn things around for the better. All we need is Love! Happy February Modesto! It is the month of love, which means it is the

perfect time to talk about all the things I love about Modesto. Did you know Modesto has a Sister City in Laval France near the City of Love? Each year Modesto and Laval host a youth exchange. High school students from the area spend three weeks in France and then the French students come to Modesto. The dates are approximately June 15th to July 5th in Laval and July 5th through July 25th in Modesto. This is an amazing experience to discover a new country. The exchange has been going on for over 25 years. My mom actually traveled to Laval as a teenager and hosted as well. The other exchange through Modesto Sister Cities is with Kurume Japan. Students from Modesto will travel there July 19th - August 1st and the students from Kurume will be in Modesto August 1st - 12th. My sister participated in this exchange a few years ago with her closest friends and had the most amazing time. The cost for Japan is just the airfare and spending money. When my sister returned we were able to accommodate

her host, Momoka. The Japanese students are on a program with lots of activities during the week, but we were able to show her some of our favorite places on the weekend. Even if you are unable to travel abroad this year there are plenty of opportunities to host students. For information about either of the exchanges or hosting please contact John Mensinger at jmensinger@hotmail. com or (209) 602-4515. I encourage you to get involved in this organization it is a great way to learn about the world and an opportunity to share the wonderful place we live - Modesto. Of course Valentine’s day is another thing to look forward to this month. When I was in 4th grade I organized Valentines for Veterans at Lakewood Elementary where I had the students write letters to the war veterans and then I proceeded to deliver them to the VA Hospital. You can also use the same idea and write letters to those in retirement homes and hospice and just keep spreading the love around Modesto as we love to do! I hope everyone has a lovely month this February and I look forward to the rest of what 2020 has to offer in this wonderful city.
