Greetings friends,

Spring is springing. If you have been driving around lately you are seeing signs of life, a new spring, buds in your garden, blossoms on trees and a new cycle and some new growth. No matter what happens with us humans, the cycle of nature keeps moving. Coming off of a wet winter, there are signs of new life everywhere. Let’s hope we can keep it going as so much depends on it. Here we are in February already and it feels like we are in a race. 2022 is off to a fast start, and here we are still talking about if we are going to turn the corner on COVID. Every time we seem to get ahead, the wheels come off and we fall back. One thing we do know, that this is the way it is going to be for a while and we have to do our best. Our local performance venues are taking many precautions, and fortunately the weather is allowing us to maintain a level of outdoor activity and that keeps our head straight. We are making adjustments, but we are travelling again and enjoying what our world and communities have to offer. I am vaxxed, boosted and I still contracted COVID a second time, but I am confident that I will not be seriously ill and didn’t have many symptoms and I focus on how I can protect others. That’s really our job isn’t it. It’s not about us, or our needs, it is really about keeping each other safe.

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

Feeling safe and needed is really what love is all about. February is the month of love and when you get down to it, it is what you for someone else that really makes love work, whether for a person, a family member or our community. Because at the end of the day, you get what you give and that is really what our message is. Get involved and make something better, volunteer and help others, give your time and resources to improve the lives of those in need and that is how we get the love we need. Sometime is it simply that base attraction that lights the fire, but you have to give of each other to get that love in return. Pretty simple huh? We are compiling a list of service clubs that need your participation. It is always better to help someone or something when you do it as a group. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, sign up for a Love Modesto project, volunteer in a needy part of our community, or join a service club and you will truly feel fulfilled. This month it is about the beauty of nature as the almond blossoms start popping. If you haven’t seen this or are from out of town, it is amazing. Almonds are tasty, many of the local restaurants have special almond enhanced items, milk shakes, and so much more. It is truly unique and as we do in Modesto USA, we cruise, so check out Visit Modesto’s Almond Blossom Cruise. Having done this a few times, we have some helpful tips on page 16. No matter what you do, you have to wrap up the day somewhere, and music is the best therapy. Making music is so enriching for me and playing for people is a blast. Modesto has so many talented musicians and my and ModestoView’s 2022 goal is to make sure that everyone knows we are a live music city, and encourage more venues, and work with the City of Modesto for music friendly rules so we can truly shine. One thing we know for sure is that live music makes a more creative city and creative cities win. That should be us. We need to do it. Check out our calendar and look at all of the places that host music and you should be able to find something

7-days a week with a couple of options wherever you are. ModestoView is all about keeping our history alive and we have a very special Black History month recognizing some of our groundbreaking citizens that broke barriers. Harrison Power also takes you on a historic romantic date night. We will have a better future if we recognize and celebrate our history. It’s a solid foundation to build on. Thank you to the local businesses that advertise in ModestoView. I get so many people that love what ModestoView means to the community and how we can help promote positive living in our community, but we need our advertisers to help us make it happen. We are the largest and most effective magazine in the central valley region and ModestoView works and reaches the people you want to reach. Please consider adding us to your marketing mix and it will work for you. I hope to see you out and about and let’s catch some music together. With gratitude, Chris Murphy Founder and Publisher, ModestoView - Since 1997 chrism@modestoview.com

Help Count the Homeless

This is an issue that is near and dear to my heart. Heart health is so very important and it can affect anyone, no matter how healthy. The first Friday in February (February 4) is National Wear Red Day. On this day in February, which is considered American Heart Month, everyone across the country dons the color red in order to raise and spread awareness in hopes to help eradicate heart disease and stroke in millions of women all over the nation. So put on your reddest red — whether it be a lipstick, a pair of pants, or your favorite hat — and paint the city red. We are in a world worried about COVID, but these heart and health issues can put you at even more risk.

Consider this: 1 in 3 – The number of adults who sufferfrom high blood pressure. 17.9 million – The number of people who died from heart diseases around the world in 2016. 80% – The percentage of heart diseases that are preventable with regular physical activity, avoiding tobacco, and maintaining a healthy diet. 12% – The percentage of stroke victims that die from it. 50% – The percentage of women who die within five years of having a heart attack. 33% – The percentage of women who do not engage in sports or physical activity.

Due to health and safety concerns brought on by the current surge of COVID-19, the 2022 Point-InTime Count has been postponed. Now scheduled for Thursday, Feb 24, 2022. It is really important that we really find out how many people are in a homeless and food risk situation. There is still time to register as a volunteer. https:// stanislaus.pointintime.info -Register by February 4th. 43 million – The number of women who currently have some type of heart disease. 655,000 – The number of Americans who die annually from heart disease. Let’s make a difference and be heart healthy and Go Red! Stay tuned for the Go Red For Women Luncheon coming in May. We will keep you posted for more details.

Help Stop Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse

We are gearing up to “Walk a Mile” in their shoes. Why? We are walking to raise money and awareness to stop sexual abuse and domestic violence. There is no room for abuse in our society and we have to walk for those that are defenseless and need the strength to get away from abusers. Our team is ready and we hope that you will help us support Haven Women’s Center. This year, everyone is invited to walk, in high heels or comfy sneakers. Domestic violence can affect everyone and we all need to walk together, not just for the victim, but for the family as well. We can do this and any contribution will help so very much. Best of all, we are all walking together and you will have a great time. Please join us April 23rd in downtown Modesto. Dr. King’s God was of a fair, equal justice In a country where all were divined to be free. His preaching left church and took to the streets, Where those who believed placed their bodies In civil and calm courage against bigotry. That wave of peaceful resistance rolled up To the Lincoln Memorial, White House and beyond, A truth force unleashed that could never be stilled. Kennedy worshipped the laws of equal justice Inside the courts and up to the citadels of power. His target was the fruition of true civil rights, Equality in schools, at work, and on the streets, With protections for all as his constant aim. He brought Lincoln’s pledge closer, to form a union Ever evolving towards King’s “moral universe,” The force of compassion that could not be stilled. King and Kennedy, on parallel tracks of fate, Were martyred by cowardly weapons of hate. What’s the abiding value of people’s names? That lives on from their character and deeds. What these men achieved remains, a firm Cornerstone of whatever is built in their honor. Let those who would enter this public place, Whether the servers or those who are served, Remember the civic spirit of those two men And work for securing their own good names.

artists in person. That is Third Thursday, so the Muse, Mistlin Gallery, State Theatre, Dragonfly Art for Life, The Farmacy, Reform Pilates and E and E Studios all be on the map and open 5 to 8 PM. If you love country road trips, I have a new opportunity to display some art at West Side Theatre out in Newman. Get your google map, take Crowslanding Road out that way, and meet this iconic landmark in the West part of our county. Noted for music, it is also the hub for the arts out that way, and in future columns, I will pass on the projects the board is working on. I am the inaugural artist for the theatre display but there will be ample opportunities to take my place in future. The Shire Arts Collective, well known for local music does a featured visual artist each month on their Facebook page. For January that was Zoe Toscano. See who Is noted this month. Peer Recovery Art Project has art, but during Third Thursday have been doing music with the Vibes. Come make family valentines at Mistlin Gallery, Saturday, February 12, as a dropin Family Open Studio event from noon to 4 PM. $5 fee Looking ahead to March, expect the maps available for the Stanislaus Artist Open Studio Tour April 23 and 24.

W E I V BREW

Five Eye Brewing;

By Christopher & Brandilyn Mitchell

A Thirst for Quality and A Desire to Understand Beer

This month we got to meet the brewers at Five Eye Brewing and, man, were we impressed with this operation! Founded by three partners (with five eyes between them-hence their name), they have a surplus of ingenuity and vision at their fingertips. The latest members of the Valley’s growing beer scene should not be missed on your next venture out. The two brewers, Alan Atkins and Steve Verner, are both Valley natives and are all-around do-it-yourselfers. They don’t just craft brews, they craft it all. Both work as contractors and designed, built, programmed or amalgamated every inch of their brewery. Seriously, it might not look like it from the outside, but this is one of the highest-tech breweries we’ve seen. This brewery is a DIY-ers dream come true. This place is filled with ingenuity, and it’s blended with technology to create an automated, perfect process offering the customer consistency with their flavorful beer. As Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” That’s their intention and they are succeeding. They started out homebrewing twelve years ago, and quickly fell in love with the process. The business was started in 2017, but the brewery didn’t open until 2021. Their desire to understand the process is

8

only second to their thirst for quality beer. A good example of this is their “Shade 10” nitro stout, made with grains that were cold-steeped for 24 hours and cacao nibs; or their “Orange You Glad” wheat beer, made with 35 hand-zested oranges. Monkey Nuts is one of their flagship beers. Originally a nameless beer, it was christened by a drunk guy at a beer festival who took one sip of this banana-forward Belgian strong ale and kept recommending to fellow drunk people to, “Go try the Monkey Nuts over there.” Steve considers himself a basic BMC man (Bud, Miller, Coors), and Alan’s favorite beer is a West Coast IPA. They offer a well-rounded selection of beers, so we are confident that you will find one you love. What do they want readers to know about them? “We are here! Come meet us!” Bring a friend, pick out your flight, and make some memories. Play a round of cornhole, or listen to a live band. Whatever you do, you will enjoy yourself. Sip on, friends!

Most people like music but there are some who love it, it is a lifelong passion maybe even an obsession. The soundtracks for movies are as much a co-star as any actor. We read books about music and watch documentaries, We buy music in a physical format, I buy viny whenever possible, We are archivists, historians and collectors. I myself have dedicated a large part of my life to promoting music, by putting on shows, hosting radio shows or writing about it. Music keeps you young and has the ability to elicit memories long forgotten. There is nothing like original music performed live; it is electric(even when it is played acoustically.) Unfortunately, even before the pandemic, there were few places to hear original music played on a regular basis. We have a wealth of talented and creative players in the greater Modesto area and it is something I love about living here. The talent is here but we need more outlets for them to be able to showcase that talent live. Until then musicians please send me your songs(mamarecords209@gmail.com) so I can play them on KCBP 95.5 FM.

For the Love of Music By Middagh Goodwin

Christian E. Boyatt(The Flowers/Freak Radio) and I have been discussing organizing a festival later this year in hopes to jumpstart a resurgence of Live Local Original Music. I also recently saw a post from Jordan Waters of Horizon Point/Koala & the Golden Boy that had a similar idea to put on a festival. I have long been a fan of the idea of multiple one block street fairs that showcase different styles. I think that by taking up a smaller footprint than has been done in the past and creating more genre-specific events Modesto can get back to where we once were. I really was enjoying the 4th Sunday Downtown Blues Crawl that Eric Benson and Earl Mathews were hosting. I would also love to see a Rockabilly Fest happen in Modesto like the Belladonna Beauties used to host. I personally want to put on a ska festival to go along with my world syndicated show This is Ska. It will take the effort of those who love music to make events like these happen and the support of all of you who like music to keep them going. It is a group effort from the venues, to the crew, the musicians and of course the fans.

Brandilyn Mitchell

Modesto has a vibrant history; just when you think you’ve learned everything about it, there’s always more. Every time I interview someone for the magazine I learn something new about the city and our community. We are lucky to be a short drive from the beach or the snow. There is always something fun to do, even with the pandemic keeping us from the traditional things we used to do. We now visit our great local parks and walk Dry Creek or the Virginia Trail on the regular. So many breweries and restaurants still offer outdoor seating so we can be out and about and invest in our community. We are excited for the vaccine to be available for the under-5-year crowd so we can go to the new children’s museum!

Your Slice of Heaven Awaits at Dragonfly Tea Room

If you are looking for something out of the box (er, from another era?) for Valentine’s this year, I have found the perfect date for you! Whether you want to take your partner, your best friend, your mom or your kids, Dragonfly Tea Room is the decadent special treat you need this year. I will not be surprised if you have never heard of Dragonfly before now, because I hadn’t either! After visiting Columbia Kate’s Tea House in Columbia in 2011, and deciding that is what she wanted to do, Judy Robinson learned all she could about tea. She crafted bags of loose leaf tea to sell at the Modesto Farmers Market and even attended the World Tea Expo in preparation for her own tea room. She developed menus and hosted at-home tea parties to practice. She was ready and excited to open in 2018! Things were going steady until January 2020, when she was afraid she might have to close the tea room. That first year of the COVID-19 pandemic almost took the tea room with it. It got to the point she was looking to sell what product she had on the shelves and have another business take over the lease. Things were dire! But the wonderful Modesto community and those that love this little slice of paradise, came through to help her financially survive. Tea and grab ‘n go orders increased enough to pay the rent, month after month. Then in November of 2020, a grant from the Stanislaus County Workforce got her in a position to no longer need to sell, and helped

her pay off her debts and hire staff. The tea room hours increased, and the doors are still proudly open. When asked about how Covid affected the tea room, she humbly replied, “It taught me I can do it all, everything fell to me, and I -through my faithwas able to hold fast and stay the course. Every time I struggle, I remind myself I am exactly where I am supposed to be, and my faith gets me through.” When you drink tea in your beautiful glass and ceramic teaware on your date, just know you are a part of the Dragonfly tea room history, keeping it open for yourself and others to continue to enjoy! The menu this month will be Parisian themed, a collaboration with Boho Buttercream featuring delicious macarons. While I was there to interview Judy, I ate from the Narnian menu called “Tea and Toast with Mr. Tumnus” inspired by page 16 of C.S Lewis’ book, “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.” Lewis once said, “You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.” I feel the same way! My favorites were Mrs. Beaver’s pot pie, the White Witch’s Chocolate Mousse, and Edmund’s Downfall Turkish Delight (which I also ate for the first time in

my life and ohmygosh how did I ever live without Turkish Delight?). I really think the French menu will give Mr. Tumnus a run for his….whatever they use for currency in Narnia. (A quick Google search tells me they used coins called “lions”!) So grab your favorite person (or persons) and make your February reservations for this great little tea room for only $26 lions per person. I mean, dollars, per person. My party and I had a lovely afternoon filled with chatting, making memories, eating delicious sweet treats and savoring every morsel. Judy’s favorite tea is the Lavender Earl Grey so that is what I ordered

and it was HEAVENLY! I know you will enjoy it, too! For reservations call the store at 209-622-0811. Sip on, friends!

There is really nothing better than being greeted by a restaurant owner. It says a lot when the owner knows what is happening, how the food is served and who is dining. It makes a difference. Vinnie Altadonna is that guy. Warm, friendly, outgoing, and proudly Italian with lots of ideas. He wears his Palermo family history and his Long Island upbringing well. Best of all, it shows up in the food and now in the restaurant he has been dreaming of. A little background, Vinnie’s grandfather left Italy for America before WWII and Mussolini. He and a partner started a tomato sauce company in Riverbank and then later had a dairy in West Modesto off of Vivian Road where Vinnie would later work. Italian food and culture is a part of Vinnie’s fabric and today, many of his recipes are based off of his Nona’s wonderful tomato sauce recipes. Most of us got to know Vinnie when he opened the Chef ’s of New York on Oakdale Rd. I became an instant fan of his New York Boardwalk-style pizzas. Thin crust, tasty, big and foldable. When he expanded into downtown, he once told me how he dreamed of having a full restaurant, with a full real bar. Now,

12

along with his business partner Clay Rossen, this dream has come true and now it is one of Modesto’s best dining experiences. The 13th Street location is easy to find with plenty of parking. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a growing evening crowd and a great weekend breakfast. Chef ’s is welcoming, comfortable and friendly and suitable for a nice romantic dinner. The chairs and booths are comfortable, the noise level is good and everyone has to walk by the kitchen on the way to their table. They know it is going to be a nice meal.

First up, it’s the food.

The entrees and specialties are flat out great. This month, in a nod to the Visit Modesto Almond Blossom Cruise, there is an almond encrusted Salmon that is amazing. I couldn’t wait to dive in, getting a bite of the almond crust with nice moist salmon. It was truly tasty and the rice, vegetables and a nice bruschetta. The almonds are a great match. Chef Austin Thom, with Italian cooking experience that even includes Alaska so he knows his seafood, runs a very efficient exposition kitchen and everything is cooked carefully under his watchful eye. the occasional big flame as the sauces and specialties are sautéed while everything is plated perfectly. It is extra fun to see the amazing New York Style pizzas coming out under the watchful eye of Raphael so grab a slice and fold it up if you desire. There are many fresh tastes on the menu if you want a salad on the side or a full meal salad. Oh did I mention the calamari? It is so hard to find where you want to start on their menu. Our specialties where the Chicken Florentine, the Nona’s Trio, and of course, their special lasagna. Wow, just wow. The flavors are rich and bold, not too blended and each dish stood out. The Manhattan style clam chowder is good and spice and pairs well as a starter. Big thumbs up. A quick word about breakfast. Amazing. For those looking for the big breakfast classics of the Sundial and Sabatino’s, they have ebelskivers, the big downtown breakfast, awesome hashbrowns, scrambles and so many more big plates. Oh yeah, and avocado toast too. But let’s get back to the bar. Star Podesto is quick with an amazing Negroni, one of my sipping and lounging favorites. This is one of Vinnie’s favorite parts. He has long wanted a full bar, a full New York style bar and Star blends up the classic favorites to any of the new craft cocktails. The G&T is perfection and they have a good selection

of great cabernets and chiantis. The vibe is good, and if you have been to the Iridium, Village Vanguard you get what this place could be. Vinnie and Clay have decorated the bar with legendary rock and roll, blues and jazz posters to get in the groove. Eric Benson brings in Grammy-winning musicians with the Blue Monday Band and long time rocker Dennis Gilmore, (started touring at 13, played all over, Vegas and more with Thunder Road. More about him soon) is both a house musician, host and purveyor of the amazing big Oysters that Chef ’s serves on Fridays and Saturdays. It’s fitting that Chef ’s is located where Modesto Music used to be back in the day. You can say that music is in the bones. There is a lot going on, the music is amazing and when I asked Vinnie how he was feeling about this right now, he exclaimed, “we are on the runway, in a jet, getting ready to take off ”. So now it is up to you. Time to check out Chef ’s of New York, for breakfast, lunch or dinner and don’t miss a great evening with great Italian food, some first class music and great cocktails. Oh yeah, take a pizza home with you for the morning.

Daren Williams W E I TER V – Almond Board of California By Chris Murphy

Daren’s home made Almond encrusted filet.

Almonds

Where did all of these Almonds come from? It seems just twenty years ago we were all peaches, apricots and tomatoes. But then came almonds. Almonds have actually been an important part of our economy for decades. From the old Blue Diamond ads, “just a can a week” commercials, to the almond being the center of a health and fitness revolution, a staple in trail mix, flour, “milk”, and is the cornerstone of healthy eating. The California almond holds a special place of premium quality, exporting to over 100 countries and is the gold standard for almonds. Modesto sits in the middle of the largest almond growing region in the world and to all that live around here, know when it is harvest season and whether you call them ALL-monds or AAH-minds, they are a huge part of our local agricultural fabric. So why are we talking about almonds? Almonds have one of the most beautiful growing seasons of any ag product. Like the cherries in Japan and Washington, the Almond blossom is one of the most beautiful things you can see. Miles and miles and acres and acres of white blossoms are stunning, so stunning in fact, that the Almond Blossom Cruise attracts people from all over the world. During the pandemic this driving tour really exploded and this year, we are expecting an amazing blossom season. Seriously though, Almonds are big business and our region is at the middle of it all. It is complicated as our ports have backed up, our exports have suffered, but all along the way, new uses for almonds are found daily. We needed some expert information so we reached out to Daren Williams, the Senior Director of Global Communications for the Almond Board of California, based in Modesto where he oversees communications to almond growers to drive adoption of best practices throughout the industry and, in turn, share the positive story with customers and consumers. Daren is a native Kansan and began his ca-

14

reer in Washington D.C. working on Senator Bob Dole’s 1988 presidential campaign. When that effort fell short of the White House, he joined a Washington, D.C.-based agricultural public affairs firm, representing clients in the halls of USDA, FDA, EPA, and Capitol Hill. He later worked with Fleishman Hillard International Communications in Kansas City and most recently the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association in Denver. Daren holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Ottawa University in Kansas, where he met his wife, Leslie. Daren and Leslie have two grown daughters, Shelby and Haley. Let’s meet Daren. ModestoView: First and foremost, is it AAH-mind or ALL-mond? Daren Williams: It depends on who you ask! At the Almond Board we say “ALLmond” but a young woman on my team, whose family grows them in Escalon, they are “AAH-minds.” When I first got here people told me they are “ALL-monds” growing on the tree and “AAH-minds after they are harvested, because the harvest process shakes the “L” out of them, but I think they were pulling my leg. The bottom line is we don’t care what you call them as long as you enjoy them! MV: Almonds have been a key part of the Central Valley Agriculture for a long time, what happened over the last 20 years that made almonds a superstar crop? DW: Actually, the story of how almonds became a global health nut began in Modesto with the Modesto Rotary club! As former Almond Board CEO Rodger Was-

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

son tells it, MoRo members were provided a daily serving of almonds in exchange for submitting to a regular cholesterol check -and apparently the results were dramatic. Of course, that first “research” wasn’t enough to support a heart health claim but years of nutrition research since then has substantiated the claim and almonds are widely accepted as an important part of a hearthealthy diet. This “health halo” drove global demand which, in turn, led farmers to plant more almonds. MV: How many acres of almonds are there in California and how big is the almond economy in dollars? DW: Almonds grow on approximately 1.5 million acres (about twice the area of Yosemite National Park) in California (120,000 of which are in Stanislaus County), making it the largest crop in both acreage and economic value, creating 110,000 jobs and adding $12.7 billion to the state GDP (64,000 jobs and $7.95 billion in the Central Valley). With our hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters, the Central Valley is the best place in the world to grow almonds! MV: What made you want to join the Almond Board and what does the Almond Board actually do? DW: The Almond Board is a growerfunded commodity marketing board. Our primary charge is to grow global demand for almonds grown in California. I have spent a good part of my career working for these types of organizations – from Beef (It’s What’s for Dinner) to Pork (The Other White Meat) to Dairy (Got Milk?) – so was very familiar with the Almond Board.

When I learned the Almond Board was looking for someone to lead a new department (Global Communications) I jumped at the chance for several reasons. First, I love almonds! I start almost every day with a handful. Second, I love California! I have family in Sacramento and California farmers lead the way in the production of many agricultural products. It has been everything I hoped for and more – living in Modesto has exceeded my expectations. I’m a big fan. As a foodie, the biggest surprise was the vibrant food scene. But I know I don’t have to convince you! MV: How have the backups at the Port of Oakland affected the harvest and the exports? DW: We export 70% of the almonds grown in California to more than 100 countries around the world (consumers everywhere love California almonds!). Most of those exported almonds – about 85% -- leave the state via the Port of Oakland. While this year’s crop is down about 10% from the record crop in 2020 (3.1 billion lbs.), it is still the second-largest crop in history (approximately 2.8 billion lbs.). The good news is we have strong global demand, and the supply to meet it, but that doesn’t do much good if we can’t ship it. So, resolving the port issues is a major priority for the industry. MV: People go to Japan and Washington DC to see the cherry blossoms, what is so different about the Almond Blossom Cruise? DW: I lived in Washington, D.C. for almost 20 years and experienced the Cherry Blossom Festival many times. There is no denying the beauty of the cherry blossoms set against the backdrop of the Jefferson Memorial, but I was blown away when I arrived in the Central Valley during the middle of the bloom in 2018. The miles and miles of pink and white blossoms dotting the countryside are unlike anything I had seen. I couldn’t stop taking pictures and posting on social media to encourage my friends to visit. Now, when they do, I can take them on the Almond Blossom Cruise! MV: What do you think the future of almond production is? DW: Having gone from beef to nuts I am bullish on the future of almond production in California. We are growing trees, which are good for the environment, to produce food that is good for people (and dairy cows, which eat the leftover almond hulls!). It’s a win-win-win. Do we have challenges?

Certainly. Water availability is a major issue. With improvements in irrigation efficiency, we use one-third less water to grow almonds today than in the 1990s but the multi-year drought we’re in has strained resources. Growers want to be part of the solution and are looking at ways to use orchards to recharge groundwater during the rainy season, but we also need more reservoirs to hold water during the rainy season so we can balance out irrigation throughout the year. MV: What is your personal favorite almond product? DW: I like to go to the Modesto Farmers Market and buy whole, natural almonds grown locally. I eat them with cottage cheese and blueberries for breakfast. But I also love the Applewood-smoked almonds from Rodin Farms (mix with their dried blueberries for a sweet, savory, and healthy snack) and almond butter milkshakes from Roberts Ferry Nut. Co. (for a more indulgent snack!). By the way, both are stops on the Almond Blossom Cruise! MV: If a local restaurant were to make the most amazing almond dish, what would it be? DW: When I made it Facebook official that I was leaving beef to come here I made almond-crusted filet mignon for dinner (and posted the pic, of course!). I’ve never seen it on a restaurant menu, but it was amazing! MV: Local restaurants, if you are reading this, almond-crusted filet sounds amazing! Just sayin’ MV: What do you enjoy most about representing almonds here in our area? DW: The people – from the almond growers to my colleagues at the Almond Board, I have met many wonderful people who are dedicated to “making life better by what we grow and how we grow,” which is the vision of the Almond Board. MV: Beatles or Stones? DW: Stones. I saw them on the Steel Wheels tour in 1989 at RFK Stadium in D.C. Amazing show. But if you had a third option it would be Pink Floyd. Dark Side. Wish You Were Here. The Wall. These are the albums that I wore out on my turntable! BTW, did you know the Allman Brothers were originally called the Allman Joys? Or was it AAH-man Joys?

Sweet and Savory Almond Magic By Abigail Power

It’s that time of the year! Almond Blossom season is here and local restaurants and cafes are embracing our Central Valley treasure, the almond! Though I’m cursed with an allergy to the delicious nut and couldn’t try the treats, my husband and I ventured to discover the delicious delights that our favorite spots have to share.

Something Sweet Now, you can find almond milk in almost any cafe, but one cafe in town is embracing the almond in MANY ways that are sure to get you in the Almond Blossom spirit. Aside from their delicious almond milk lattes and coffee treats, Mocha Magic has two almond treats that stand out above the rest. You can enjoy and Almond Joy Blended Mocha! A reminder of your favorite candy bar and a blast of caffeine is the perfect start to your day or a delicious dessert wind down. My husband’s personal favorite is the Honeybee Pastry. With two layers of delicious pastry and a creamy filling, the honey almond top with a dusting of powdered sugar gives the crunch and flavor that brings out the nutiness of the almonds and tastiness of the season! Plus, they have delicious French macarons made with almond flour in new flavors every week!

Try Mocha Magic today and remember that every they make is baked in house and has fast and friendly service to start your day on a wonderful, nutty note! Mocha Magic 920 16th St Modesto 209522-8955 @mochamagic Open 6:30 am weekdays and 8 am Sat.

Something Savory After a morning enjoying treats at Mocha Magic, it’s time for some delicious restaurant specialties from Fuzio Universal Bistro! Fuzio has a wonderful, diverse menu that has something for everyone, but during almond blossom season Chef Fuzio likes to showcase fresh fish dishes with local almond crumbles and crusts. Year round, you can get amazing treats that highlight the local nut, like the Pan Seared Brussel Sprouts and Red Quinoa Pilaf, both made with local almonds! The brussel sprouts are sticky and gooey with delicious bacon and Sciabica balsamic and the crunch of the almond rounds off a perfect appetizer. The Red Quinoa Pilaf is a healthy dish featuring spinach, mushrooms, feta, and of course local almonds. Finish off the meal with the delicious coffee or cocktail (Pear of Dice or Fuziotinis are our personal favorite!) and enjoy a night supporting local business and agriculture. BIG VIEW

By Chris Murphy

Here in Modesto USA, everything is a cruise.

From Graffiti Summer, to Crab Feed Cruise-ins, to Cruise Trunk-n-Treats to any evening all summer long, we know how to cruise. Thanks to Mother Nature and a recent abundance of rain, the 2022 Almond Blossom season should be amazing. Launched during COVID in 2021, Visit Modesto had the great idea to tell the world about our Almond Blossoms, the bright white flowering trees that are all over our region, free for all to see. The Almond Blossom Cruise was born and people were excited. This is an easy cruise, just drive down any country road, or along the freeway or walk on the canals and you can see a brilliant display, with rows of trees lined up for miles and miles.

Almond Blossom Cruise Route

There are a lot of things to see and places to stop. You can check out the oldest and largest Walnut tree in Wood Colony west of Modesto, you can stop at Fiscalini and Oakdale Cheese and Sciabica Olive Oil along the way and it will be a great experience. Friends now remember, almond orchards are private land so please be respectful and view the blossoms from the street. Have no fear though as some of our local orchards are open to the public with special viewing platforms and you can even take a train ride through the blossoms, but please, enjoy the blossoms from your vehicle. Last year people from all over came by car, plane and train to Modesto to experience the beauty and the magic of the Almond Blossom Cruise.

My favorite direction

of the cruse begins and ends in Modesto, traveling counterclockwise heading out Highway 132 east of Modesto, passing by the Gallo Winery, (the largest in the world) stopping at the Fruit Yard for a hearty breakfast and to check out their produce stand. (good idea to get gas) Then continue east to Roberts Ferry.

Finally it is time, to CRUISE into downtown Modesto to the Historic Cruise Route. McHenry was home to the legendary Graffiti Nights in Modesto and as you head back to downtown, you will reach 10th and 11th Streets, the original cruising streets, made famous by the film American Graffiti. These are the streets where George Lucas cruised and spent his evenings, creating the stories that would change film forever. Make sure you walk the Cruise Route and find the 25 different Markers that feature a different story, each with a QR Code that pulls up a video and message from a Legend of the Cruise.

East out 132 - past Gallo, stop at Fruityard, to Roberts Ferry Store and Bridge North on Crabtree / Warnerville Willms to Kinghts Ferry Orange Blossom to Oakdale – Oakdale Cheese South on Albers to Claribel - to Rodin at Oakdale Road Then down McHenry - McHenry Village for Stewart & Jasper... to downtown Modesto!

Then head west to McHenry and cruise back into Modesto USA.

A perfect stop on the Almond Blossom Cruise is in McHenry Village, at the Stewart & Jasper store. There are so many gifts there made with almonds, many that are chocolate covered. The gift packs are a great thing to give to friends, family and as business gifts. Save this stop on your tour for when you can take a good break or wrap up your day as they have a great wine tasting area, where you site and sample many local wines and enjoy almonds as you reminisce about your cruise. This is one of the great local fruit and nut companies, based in Patterson Ca.

132 You can end at Rodin Farmers Market at 10th and J and taste a wide variety of dried and fresh fruit treats, chocolate covered and roasted almonds, local honey, fresh salads, whipped feta and so much more from Marie Rodin and her family farms. Now it is time to take a break and enjoy dinner at one of Modesto’s amazing restaurants within walking distance, many with special almond entrees and cocktails for you to enjoy. Sconza Chocolate Company

You won’t miss the giant Sconza factory. Unfortunately, you can’t tour this company, but back in the day, this was the Hershey Factory. Today, the Sconza family uses a huge amount of our local almonds for their chocolate covered almonds and the candy covered Jordan almonds for which they are famous. You can find Sconza treats in local retail and grocery stores. After you turn west on Claribel, head directly to Rodin Farms Produce Stand at the corner of Oakdale Road. This is one of our areas great fruit stands.

120 The Rodin Family came to Modesto from San Francisco where Grandfather Antonin Rodin founded Original Joe’s. The family settled here in the 1940s and have been farming since along with many other Italian families that grew grapes and many other fruit crops. You can even enjoy a “train” ride through the blossoms as the orchards come right up to the fruit stand

When you take the back way out of Kinghts Ferry, it is a beautiful trip down Orange Blossom Road, also a great song by local musician Dave Hanley. (It’s one of my faves and you will like it too) When you arrive in Oakdale, check out the Oakdale Cheese Company. I love their Gouda and their Curds and Squeakers. (don’t ask, just try a bag) If you are from Wisconsin, you are hip to these treats. Head south through Oakdale down Albers Road to Claribel Road.

Not too far east of Roberts Ferry, you will make a north turn onto Crabtree Road. This will take you wandering through the hills, and encountering some of the largest almond orchards. This will ultimately turn into Warnerville Rd and then Willms Rd that will take you across Highway 120 into Knights Ferry, by the 50s Road House and into old Knights Ferry, where no visit is complete with out walking across the historic old covered bridge and you can find the River’s Edge in the town center.

One of my favorite stops on the Almond Blossom Cruise is Roberts Ferry Store. Not only do they have amazing produce and almonds and other nuts, they make milk shakes. If you are doing the Almond Blossom Cruise on your bike, your car, or your motorcycle, most definitely stop in and order one of their famous ice cream milk shakes. Truly amazing. Normally, I get the fresh banana and hot fudge shake, but during February, I will try one of their Chocolate Almond Butter shakes. This is crazy good. Don’t miss the Robert’s Ferry Nut products that you can purchase there or have mailed anywhere. Across the street is the historic covered Roberts Ferry Bridge. More Big View on next page FOLLOW US:

This year, Celestial Sound Studio is celebrating 25 years of service to our Modesto community. It is only a stone’s throw away from the home of studio owners, Roger, and Jo Hanner. In fact, together, Mr and Mrs Hanner built the studio on their own. Talk about teamwork that made a dream work! Roger credits his wife every chance he gets for assisting him with his dream. Roger always had a love of music and the rock and roll lifestyle. Even his long flowing hair reflects that. To this day, when Roger is questioned about his long hair, he responds with a smile and says simply, “I do music.” With Roger’s free spirit, it is no surprise, that from a young age, he desired to go off and start an independent life of his own. The minute he became an adult, he left his New York home. “I was only 18 years old, and I told my parents that I was going to hitchhike from New York back to California to live my dreams. All I had was my backpack and the drive to succeed. Originally, I was from California anyway, but my mother had remarried and moved us to New York. But at 18, I was ready to go back to California,” he said. Years later, Roger returned to New York and ended up reconnecting with Jo. They were friends from their High School days. When they saw each other again, sparks flew, and they married. Roger went on to say, “I went to school for music and my wife was my main supporter. Gary Van Scyoc, who was John Lennon’s bass player,

became my Music Theory teacher. Music was in my family. My great-aunt was a singer in The Benny Goodman Band in 1934, so music has always flowed through my veins, and I always knew I wanted a recording studio. In 1995, Jo and I moved back to Modesto and bought this house. We began to build my dream studio next door to it in 1997.” It was then, that Celestial Sound Studio was born! Inside, there are three separate areas of space. Throughout the years, many beautiful artifacts have been collected and housed inside. There is a grand piano, a gong, similar to the one used on the original seventies tv sitcom, The Gong Show, and a beautiful symbol that was given to Roger by the rock band, Slayer. There are far too many bands that have recorded at Celestial Sound Studio to mention them all. However, Slayer, Boston, Oakland rapper, Too Short, Modesto’s own, Flying Blind, as well as Roger Hanner’s own band, Wisdom, have all recorded here. I asked Roger the Modesto View Magazine signature question, “Stones or Beatles?” Roger replied, “Led Zepplin but I love the Beatles. Their music speaks to me on so many levels.” Celestial Sound Recording Studio has brought Roger Hanner a great abundance of success here in Modesto, California and after twenty-five years of service, he says, “There will be no stopping!” For more information or to schedule a recording session (209) 575-4338.

“If music be the food of love, play on.” Shakespeare, ‘Twelfth Night.’ The first MU showcase of 2022 welcomes back one of our youngest headliners, the multitalented Zoey Rae, to lead another Valentine-themed program at The Dragonfly Art For Life. Zoey performs with multiple groups including cover band Funkhaus and the Central Valley Youth Harp Ensemble. Since she last headlined for us at last year’s Valentine concert, she’s gone on to make her professional opera debut with Opera Modesto in ‘The Magic Flute’; and taken home her first MAMA Award for unplugged artist. Zoey and a few friends will deliver this romantic concert on Saturday 2/12 at 7:30 pm, at the gallery at 1210 J St. Admission is $10 for music only, but we encourage you and/or your date to try your hand and painting while you listen. Fees vary depending on which medium you choose. The following weekend, we have another Young Artist program for you at the Dragonfly, this time starring born crooner Michael Balerite. Michael is no foreigner to the performing scene, having been involved with Opera Modesto since 2018 as a youth artist, singing in various operas, concerts, and showcases, including a recent

collaboration between OpMo and Modesto Unplugged this past December in our “Around the World in 80 Minutes” concert. In addition to music, Michael competes in speech and debate competitions, having performed the spoken word at the local, state, and national levels. Friday 2/18, 7:30, $10 at the door. You can catch some lovely locally-sourced music onstage at the Gallo Center this month: February 4, trumpeter Joe Mazzaferro brings his jazz quintet back for another close-quarters concert - the seating is actually ON the stage in the smaller theater, with only about 100 spots available. Joe is a prolific player in the NorCal jazz scene and the associate director of jazz studies at UoP’s Conservatory of Music. Enjoy songs from Joe’s latest record ‘Only Time Will Tell.’ The show starts at 8 pm, tickets are $39. On February 19, the BluesBox Bayou Band bring their zydeco party music to the Gallo stage. These ragin’ Cajuns have been making music together for more than a quarter-century. Their playlist includes unique shout-outs to New Orleans, Cajun, Creole, classic rock, R&B and Tex-Mex styles. 8 pm, $15-$30. Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. Tennis Anyone? By Efren Martinez

As we move forward into a New Year I can only be extremely optimistic. I anticipate a fast end to the Omicron surge and remain hopeful that we may finally see an end to this terrible virus. Much of January I spent trying to figure out ways to best enjoy fitness while still keeping myself and our community safe. One day as I was driving by many of the Tennis Courts in our area I thought, why not Tennis? It’s outside, spacious and you can really get a fantastic workout while sharing time with others. Another added benefit to playing tennis is that it provides much of the sunshine our body needs. That natural Vitamin D the sun gives us is a plus to enriching a healthy immune system. Honestly you don’ have to be a tennis pro or even very good to play. The truth is the worse you are at it the better the workout can prove to be. You can get a great workout just chasing after the ball trying to hit it

while having fun. You certainly can have a great time just being out there trying something different. It can be a great diversion to your routine workout regimen. Friends the weather was exceptional last January and even if February doesn’t turn out to be a carbon copy it doesn’t matter. You can still get out there in the chill of a cold morning or night and quickly warm up chasing the ball while getting in some healthy outdoor fitness. So try one of the many tennis courts available in our parks all around town for free. The sporting equipment need is minimal to purchase or think of borrowing from a friend to try out. Cheers to your health.

Race Relations in Love Teacher, Mrs Doreen Gordan Carvalho By Tasha Wilson This is a short and sweet tribute going out directly to the beautiful Mrs DoreeGordon Carvalho. Mrs Carvalho was never my teacher. I knew her strictly from the playground at recess. Her beautiful soul was a protector to me. You see, my brother Jabbar and I were only 2 of about 10 African American students at Sylvan Elementary School during the 1970s. Easily, we could have felt alone, lost, and unprotected, but Mrs Carvalho made sure that instead, we felt included, equal, and loved! Some 30 plus years after I left Sylvan School, my two children would end up attending there. She was never either of my children’s teachers either. Still, on their first day home from their new school, they mentioned a teacher they met on the playground that loved on them all day. Her name? Mrs. Doreen Gordon Carvalho! Mrs Carvalho is retired now, and I don’t go to visit her the way I should. I just want her to know that Black History Month always causes me to remember her heart. Openly, she demonstrated love towards my brother and I, during a time when that was uncommon! For that, our family will always love you Please donate to Graffiti USA Museum

Happy February Modesto

ALL AGES VIEW

By Grace McNamara

Here’s to hoping you had a great first month of your 2022. I see small signs of spring every day! Sometimes, it can be hard looking for fun things to do, so I am here to help you out! First, I want to talk about my favorite things to do here in Modesto. One of the many things I missed in 2020 during Covid was the Gallo Center for the Arts. The Gallo Center has several performances every day. I’ve seen some of my favorites, such as the musical “Once” and the Central West Ballet of “The Legends of Sleepy Hollow.” I have even performed at the Gallo a time or two! There are two theaters in the building: the Mary Stuart Rogers Theater and the Foster Family theater. There are many refresh-

ments to choose from, and it’s absolutely astonishing inside! You can bring your beverages inside the theater in a fun Whirly cup. Don’t forget to look up the different performances for this month! Another one of my favorite places to visit is the McHenry Mansion. It’s a Victorian Italianate historic house and museum. It was built in the year 1883 as a residence for Robert McHenry. I used to visit it all of the time when I was younger, especially during Christmas time because the home was decorated beautifully. If interested in taking a look, there are tours on Fridays, Sundays, and Mondays from 12:30-4 pm. Free of charge! Another fun activity to do in Modesto is heading to the Vintage Faire Mall. I love shopping with my friends there and trying on clothes and accessories. I went there just this weekend with my friends and ate at the food court. I got one of those delicious giant pretzels. They have a huge amount of different stores, restaurants, and places to eat. This is a great place to go when bored, looking for a fun activity to do. Well, I hope you all have a lovely February and find some awesome things to do here in Modesto!

The Year of the Water Tiger 2022

modestoview.com

Have you sufficiently celebrated the New Year? If not, here’s another chance! This year’s Chinese New Year is the Year of the Water Tiger beginning Feb 1st of 2022 and lasting until January 21 of 2023. Chinese New Year is celebrated across Asia and around the world with fireworks, firecrackers, parades and family dinners. In China the tiger is thought of as the king of all beasts. He is not only a symbol of strength and courage but also a gorgeous creature! Reading about the meaning and predictions for the 2022 Water Tiger on the Internet gives me some kind of imaginative jump start on what may be in store for us this year. The Tiger is the 3rd animal in the zodiac, proceeded by the Ox and the Rat. Each of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac is

characterized by a certain energy : “The year of the Rat (2020) was about survival and the year of the Ox (2021) was about anchoring ourselves in a new reality. The year of the Tiger will be about making big changes “A year of risk-taking and adventure.” The element of Water is attached to the 2022 Tiger. It is said to bring out our emotions, but will also help to balance the passionate, masculine energy of the Tiger. The capacity of listening and adaptation will help to make sound choices. “For all of us this will be the year to give the best of ourselves in order to significantly improve our living conditions. Also a good time for all those of us who wish to forget our stormy past, heal our wounds and find a legitimate place in society. Going for it with all we got with a calm and lucid mind that is aware of ethical values, can bring remarkable success professionally, in romantic relationships and in the family.” Wish you all a happy New Year of the Water Tiger! Twenty Five Years of Sundays Thinking how quickly 25 years can pass since the early stages of the Bluesbox Bayou Band (a funny name, I never could explain). I have been honored and blessed to have played with some mighty great players and personalities through these years, and tragedies were bound to happen. Losing Rudy Knight on drums and the unexplained sudden passing of Brian Krilanovich and Cari Lasee, they’ll be so gratefully remembered for what they brought to our family table. These old photos only memories of our first gigs in 1997 at Pacifica Grill with my great friend and bassist Danny Rogers, who I dared to play stand up bass live, he never looked back. On the drums, my ever so talented nephew Pete DeMattos, it was all his idea in the first place! Never forgetting our roots playing those early wild wild nights at Wilma’s Flying Pig, the Murphys Hotel, Confidence Inn and all those little haunts and hotel bars in the Mother Lode. We shook them up pretty good with just

three guys and squeezebox. Along comes “mayor” Jimmy Hildreth with his shiny new rub board, and swept us all away with trips to the holy land and after that, our music was never, ever the same. What was just to be a temporary means to survive, turned out to be something more then I or any of my cohorts could imagine. They all laughed when I sat down to play the accordion (I still do). So here we are now, thrilled to be doing a concert show with my new “old” crew at the Gallo Center for the Arts, Modesto, February 19th. I’ve been making music with my brother Frank Grimaldi, Julie Johnson and Debi Ribeiro Krilanovich for a very long time now, as new members are just coming on board with us. I welcome Michael Ray on fiddle, and David Rogers on drums to the “Bluesbox Bayou family”, we’re all going to shake it up again, hope you’ll join us. Tickets are available online and at Gallo Center Box Office: https:// tickets.galloarts.org/8243/8244
