What a difference a week makes! Rebecca and I are so very proud to be grandparents to the amazing baby Vivian. She is only a few days old now and she has already brought so much joy to our family. Abigail and Harrison are both doing well and we are so very happy for them. Also very special is that Vivian is named after Abigail’s Grandmother and Rebecca’s late Mom, Vivian McNulty. I know that she would have loved this little girl and the other grandkids we are enjoying. These are magic and special times. February has become a powerhouse month and is loaded with really important events. In addition to the always interesting Valentine’s Day and the President’s Day holidays, February is time to recognize Black History Month. Modesto has a very rich and

diverse community and it is important that we are aware, educated and respectful for our many cultures. It is great to have so many energetic people that are champions for Black History efforts in our community and we are happy to celebrate some of our newer movers and shakers along with those that have paved the way on our cover this month. There is so much to learn. Modesto has another February secret weapon by the grace of Mother Nature. Millions of almond trees put on a show that rivals Cherry Blossom season in Japan or Washington DC. Thanks to the team at Visit Modesto, the Almond Blossom Cruise is known across the USA and beyond. Also cool, that because we are the home of American Graffiti and the under-construction Graffiti USA Museum, everything

The Beatles could not be more clear about the simplicity of the role of love. It is really so simple as a guiding light, and John Lennon and Paul McCartney were pointing out the obvious that fundamentally, you get what you give and treat those in the world with respect. Think how much better our world would be if we really lived like this. Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe asked “what’s so funny about peace love and understanding”. We should ask ourselves these questions that make us think and truly understand the people and the world around us. Do the things you love, love where you live, love each day and most importantly, love others as yourself and you know it’s going to be all right. A few years ago, local photographer David Shroeder and John Griswold created Focus on Havana, a gala event that celebrated places like Cuba. This evolved into FotoModesto showcasing local photographers with a common theme. Today, this event is now the Stanislaus County Photo Contest by StanArts that will be presented this month at the Mistlin Gallery. This is a unique contest for photographers worldwide to showcase their perspectives & artistic expression. The contest is comprised of two different competitions open to all photographers and all types of

photographic work; including but not limited to work with DSLRs, film cameras, cell phones, large format & pinhole cameras. Each competition will have 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place winners, in addition to many sponsor awards. The exhibition will be on display for the month of February with a special celebration February 15 at the Downtown Art Walk. Over 450 submissions from were received including submissions from Bangladesh, Germany and Canada.

On February 17th, 12-6 pm at Twin Rivers Saloon, celebrate John’s life through music and help raise funds for his family. Taking the stage wil be Blue Line, Triple D, Weekend at Jimmy’s, Mike Allsup, Zoey Rae, TMR, G’psy Soul, Kickstart, Sweet Taunts, Randy Ray, the Whiskey Skulls, and many more. $10 at the door and all proceeds go to John Shaw’s family.

We have a very special cover this month with 2 different generations of romance. Grandparents Joe and Hattie Pope enjoy a non-alcoholic cocktail at the new romantic Intermission at the State Theatre. Joe and Hattie are longtime residents originally from Florida, then Boston, where Joe was the first African American Cadillac Manager. Later relocating to Modesto, they had Pope Chevrolet on McHenry. Joe and Hattie are leaders in the community, Hattie working with the NAACP and Joe is a mentor and leader for the Men’s Group. He currently serves on the Graffiti USA Museum board of directors. Brennen Shearer-Pope is Joe and Hattie’s grandson. Brennen is an Expanded Learning Coordinator for the Modesto City Schools and was a basketball star at Davis High in Modesto before playing ball and graduating from Easter Oregon University. He is committed to helping kids make a difference. Fallon Ferris grew up in the Modesto City Schools and was a leader in the Downey Black Student Union and later won state office. She earned her Masters while working for Walt Disney World. She returned to Modesto and founded the Stanislaus County Youth Empowerment Program. She is now an Equity and Intervention specialist with the Modesto City Schools. Shared passions for both of these couples make community leadership romantic.

February is the month when you might find Valentine’s Art gifts cheaper than chocolates in our downtown Art District. The galleries have art and crafter gifts at The Chartreuse Muse, Peer Recovery Art Project, Mistlin Gallery, Dragonfly Art for Life, along with Intrinsic Elements, Beads of Contentment, Picasso’s Gourmet Deli and Gallery. You need to shop during regular hours as Art Walk is a day late on February 15. Big Earl Matthews will be giving a Macramé workshop at Peer Recover Art Project during Third Thursday Art Walk hours on the 15th. This is among the classes, workshops, and gallery opportunities PRAP hopes to offer in 2024 as they celebrate their 15th Anniversary as a nonprofit organization on February 24 with an Art, Music, and Car show in association with Brian Friend. The Official Third Thursday Art Walk announced that a collaborative effort, Visit Modesto, D.I.D, D.O.M.O, and the Stanislaus Arts Council are joining forces to elevate the Art Walk experience. This partnership brings together the resources and expertise of Visit Modesto’s market-

ing team to amplify the reach and impact of Art Walk. The aim is to showcase more artists and highlight local businesses on the Art Walk route. Some other changes moving into March are going on with what is still called the Mistlin Gallery. Featured this month is The Stanislaus Arts Council International Photography contest exhibit, which opens on January 30 and runs until March 1. With this show, there is the opening of the Grace Lieberman Cabaret Series, featuring “Moody Moments in Music” by the Synergy Chamber Players on February 17 at 7 PM. The show includes Classical and Contemporary music featuring a String Quartet and artist Nicole Slater’s paintings to live music. Tickets are available at the gallery, 1015 J Street, Modesto. This month is also open for entry in the Young at Art student show from March 5 to 30, complete with a music, dance, and poetry concert on March 9 featuring young artists from our community. Among the changes already in progress with the Mistlin Gallery, now operated by and home to the Stanislaus Arts Council, is the new website address. http://www.

stanislausarts.org/mistlin-gallery The first message that greeted me in bold print as I checked the link for writing this column was that the Arts Council is offering a $5000 Arts Grant, with applications due on February 29. If you are an artist, educator, or a member of an arts organization, you may be eligible. Click the new link for more details. The Stanislaus Arts Council will be partnering with Stanislaus County on social media during February to spotlight the amazing talent of Black Artists, of all different disciplines, from our county to celebrate Black History Month. Social Media Posts will be on Thursdays, beginning on 2/1. The annual “Expressions” show at Tracy Community Center, 950 East Street in Tracy, is open from February 16 to 23. Modesto artist Henrietta Sparkman was the Juror for this exhibit. She also curates the

art displays at Kruse-Lucas Imports Gallery, 525 Tully Rd across from MJC. This month, multimedia artist William Taylor. If you venture down to Turlock, the Carnegie Arts Center Ferrari gallery has more displays of the “West Side Story” mural project and is viewable until May 18 as part of a larger show of the artist’s work. The clear winner for the exhibition in January’s Modesto art scene was “Single Exposure: A Don Hall Show” at Mistlin Gallery, complete with a Big Al from Good Day Sacramento interview listed on their YouTube page under Stanislaus Arts Council. An upcoming exhibition to look for is the Heartland Creative Corps Grant Project with Modesto Art Academy and artist collaboration Paul Harmon and the Boys and Girls Club of Stanislaus County called “Bottled Ecology”. The installation will be announced.

Black Sheep

Kitchen & Cocktails Outcast? Hardly. Least favourite? Unlikely. By Ren Fantastico

Date night on the books? Important guests to impress? Bougie family tired of same ol’ same? If you’ve been craving something new, Black Sheep will draw you to Riverbank. Picture fun decor, lively atmosphere, and open arms. From the windows to the walls someone is showing off a passion for decor. Subtle nods to its name are found throughout. The moody interior welcomes you to join in the fun and take part in something unique and unexpected. The owner, Randy Rocha, opened Black Sheep Kitchen & Cocktails this past year in the heart of downtown Riverbank. He lost his brother and dad a few months prior to opening. Losing his dad and brother so close to the opening led Randy to focus on what is most important. Connections. Building up networks to form bonds that reach beyond customer relationships and focus on joining together to help everyone. With a background in construction Randy

went a different direction. “I like food and booze!” His reason for jumping ship into the restaurant business is solid and inspiring. With previous successes of Twisted Pig and Tap Room under his belt once again he branched out again to newer heights. Recognizing the need for deeper connections in our community, his focus is placed on creating a third space outside of work and home to congregate and broaden the horizons of his visitors. The atmosphere has been curated to welcome friends old and new. The staff go out of their way to accommodate all of their guests. Little ones and furry ones are treated especially well. With a full bar at the ready you cannot go wrong! First on my list to try was the spicy Margarita with a Tajin rim. The flavors were balanced and really allowed the tequila to blossom through the layers of flavor. Next up was a Hot Toddy… or 2. I went in with allergies and left cured. Local honey and fresh lemons were just the beginning of

my healing journey. The spices were well rounded and HEAVENLY. Did I share? Somewhat begrudgingly. All were in agreement that a second was necessary. What’s a night out with a bit of cuisine? I’m a sucker for a good Mussels and Clam Boil, paired with Silva’s Linguica. I have a strong suggestion, do not skip. Of course every balanced meal must have fries! Linguica topped fries! These are some Po-ta-tos that would make even Gollum turn his head. Fresh pico and slices of jalapeño with just enough cheese to have crunchy fries to the last bite. Before we left we accepted the sheep’s highest recommendation to try “Love Spell”. He

socked it to me one more time with a fresh fruity finish to the evening that made me glad I brought a designated driver. High praise for Black Sheep of Riverbank. I’m gonna tell you one more time they cannot be beat. Randy’s closing argument, “I don’t want to be the best if I’m the only option in town.” Welcoming friendly competition and working with other local businesses make our corner of the world well-rounded and representative of the community it enjoys.

Honoring our Past, Present and Future

In the heart of our bustling Modesto community, resides a remarkable woman whose dedication to preserving African American heritage has left an indelible mark on those around her. Ms. Audrey Spearman, a visionary leader and community advocate, has dedicated her life to recognizing the invaluable contributions of African American figures throughout history. For that

reason, during Black History Month, I have chosen to share who Ms. Spearman is and the valuable contributions she brings forth to promote our beautiful city of Modesto! Each year, Ms. Spearman orchestrates captivating shows that pay homage to the slave survival, leadership, and creative arts within the African American culture, highlighting the extraordinary individuals who have shaped the course of black history. Ms. Spearman’s annual shows are a testament to her unwavering commitment to the education and empowerment of our youth and community. Through the medium of art and storytelling, she brings to life the narratives of iconic African American figures, shedding light on their resilience, fortitude, and enduring impact on society. Her shows serve as a powerful platform for educating and inspiring the younger generations, instilling in them a sense of pride and identity rooted in their cultural heritage. This year, The King Kennedy Board of Directors Presents the show, titled, “Black History: We Are Here to Tell the Story.” It promises to be yet another stirring tribute to the enduring spirit of African Americans

Black History Month Modesto has such a rich and diverse culture, and that’s a great thing. The more we know and understand each other and recognize and respect our history; it’s good for our community. There are many ways to engage, understand and team up.

Her tireless efforts have not only brought about greater awareness of the rich tapestry of African American contributions, but these entertaining shows have also inspired countless individuals to embrace their cultural roots while striving for continued excellence in their own lives, and most importantly, within the lives of our own Modesto youth. Our high heels are on and we are training to “Walk a Mile” in her shoes. Why? We are walking to raise money and awareness to stop sexual abuse and domestic violence. There is no room for abuse in our society and we have to walk for those that are defenseless and need the strength to get away from abusers. Szyndler’s List

A few summers ago, I came up with one of the coolest ideas I’ve had as a music curator. Quite the experiment, really: a run of four monthly World Music Jams, held at the Barkin’ Dog Grill where I hosted my very first evening of music downtown over a decade ago. There were combinations of Latin percussion, Irish fiddling, Swedish nyckelharpa, a touring pop trio from Japan, Indian sitar, and Native American flute. That last element was contributed by Merced-based artist Katt Szyndler (pronounced like “Schindler”), a young lady who shares my passion for bringing ethnic sounds to the region and is a cultural force in her city. Katt has managed the facilities at the Merced Multicultural Arts Center (MAC) for the past five years, booking and overseeing events and curating the galleries. She plays flute, didgeridoo, and various percussion instruments. She’s a visual artist, a stage manager, and a host of manifesting workshops, among other endeavors. Her personal gallery project ‘Community Spirit,’ now in its third year, is a celebration of diverse artistic talents from across Merced County and surrounding areas. She describes it as a melting pot of creativity, that allows all ages to create anything in any medium. This year, a fashion show element will be added. Katt is dedicated to igniting the community with exciting activities and events for all ages, all styles, and all mediums. The community is her canvas, and she’s painting it with joy, creativity, and

boundless energy. I asked Katt about her top five creative ambitions for the coming years, and her answer reflects the spirit of artistic community running deep within her. #1: Produce a community project involving all ages and all cultures. #2: Perform more with others locally in Merced and expand out to the county. #3: Create a Sound Circle space for others to come and explore music together at the MAC. #4: Have a Szyndler family art show within the next two years. #5: Visit New York again and be paid to perform or teach there during that time. On Saturday, February 10, you can party with Katt and the MAC crew at their annual Mardi Gras fundraiser at the Arts Center, 645 W. Main St., Merced. With live music on two stages, a NOLA-inspired dinner buffet, a beignet bar, and a ‘Voodoo Lounge,’ the good times will be rolling from 6-10 PM. Tickets are $50, available at artsmerced.square.site. My lady happens to hail from New Orleans, and this happens to be our anniversary weekend, and what incredible timing! Modesto Junior College is a treasure. Community colleges are one of the true lifebloods in our country. I am a believer that education is so very important and the quest for knowledge is paramount. It’s our job to learn about and understand how the world works in addition to acquiring skills for a job or vocation. There are so many paths one can take, whether it be academic or vocational, but learning how to think and understand the world around us is so very important. Community colleges make this possible and offer a transition that is accessible to all. Modesto Junior College, a.k.a. MJC has been a key stepping stone for so many, like George Lucas, who famously studied Anthropology at MJC after crashing his car in a near fatal accident and superstar Jeremy Renner who also made his jump to Hollywood via MJC. MJC has been the starting point for generation after generation of our local citizens, providing foundational learning for local businesspeople who now lead us in industry, trades, and many of whom transferred to universities for additional learning. A significant percentage of MJC faculty members and a much higher percentage of MJC staff members began as MJC students. After a recent series of Presidents appointed from outside the area, local leaders asked, “Hasn’t MJC been able to grow a qualified leader from within like other agencies such as SCOE and Modesto PD have done? Isn’t there someone within the organization with the qualifications and experience for the role who is already committed to the college and the community? The answer turned out to be a resounding, YES!. Brian Sanders is a professor of Mathematics who has been a leader in our educational community. He has the support of the staff at MJC and he has MJC’s best interests at heart. Brian has a doctorate in education from UC Davis, a masters in mathematics from University of Oregon and a bachelors from UC Santa Barbara. He has lived in Modesto for almost 30 years with wife Debbie. Their three daughters attended Sylvan Schools and Beyer High School, participated in Modesto Girls Softball League, competed in the Beyer High School Marching Band and Color Guard, swam for Beyer, and ran in the Modesto Marathon. Let’s get to know Dr. Brian Sanders.

ModestoView: What first interested you about Mathematics? Brian Sanders: As a freshman in college, I learned that I was good at it – and good at explaining math concepts to others. I got a job in the tutoring center, helped others overcome their fears of math, and decided to go into teaching. It was actually an Introduction to Proofs class in my sophomore year that showed me different aspects of math, such as multiple levels of infinity, that moved beyond the typical sequence of algebra and calculus concepts that triggered my interest in math. In teaching Math for Elementary School Teachers at MJC, I was able to pass along this sense of wonder and joy to many others which, I hope, they passed along to their students in turn. MV: How did you originally come to Modesto? BS: I interviewed for a full-time job in Spring of 1994. I was given a campus tour by longtime math instructor, Jim Johnson. We saw the campus together, talked about possibilities, and he mentioned that they were hiring two faculty, but a third retirement was in the wings. I didn’t get tapped for one of those two, but after the interview I contacted the dean, Lance Thompson, and asked about part-time work. He assigned me three classes as a part-timer in Fall 1994, and I made it a point to meet the rest of the faculty and demonstrate my interest in the full-time role. I was blessed to be interviewed again in Spring of 1995 and offered a full-time teaching job, beginning in Fall 1995. My wife and I moved here from the Bay Area and never looked back.

MV: How would do you describe the role of MJC in our community? BS: MJC is a “stalwart” in our community. That’s an old-time word, usually referring to a person who is rock solid, always there, consistent, strong, and can always be counted on to deliver. That’s MJC. Your readers, their parents, and their grandparents before them all had opportunities to advance their lives and careers by starting at MJC. There, they received terrific instruction, grew as individuals, and prepped for their futures. Later on, they gave back by attending events, contributing to the MJC Foundation, and spreading the good word about the college to everyone. MV: What are the strengths of MJC? BS: Check out our catalog of offerings! We have incredible faculty in an amazing variety of fields. With the support of our community through Measure E, we are blessed with excellent instructional facilities in STEM, theater, and healthcare, among others. Despite unrest among upper administration, the faculty and staff and leadership team have remained committed to the good work of helping students fulfill their educational goals. Someone recently mentioned to me, “MJC’s reputation has been tarnished.” That’s a good metaphor. Tarnish is a surface condition. The underlying silver platter remains fully formed and functional. With the right elbow grease and cleaner, you can restore the shine to match the functionality. That’s where we are now. We have some work to do in restoring relationships with the community, but at the core the college is incredibly strong. MV: Now that you are at the helm, what new directions would you like to explore? BS: The great thing about coming from within is knowing that our strategic plan

is already pointing us in the right directions. We have three goals. First and foremost, our goal is to help each student achieve their goals – whether that’s an entry level technical position or transferring to a university to cure cancer. Our second goal is to strengthen the college from within, and the third is to expand and improve partnerships with the community. All these goals are broad, yet they are fulfilled in the specific situation of each student or community/corporate partner. One key area to continue to grow is in our partnership with BEAM Circular and the bio-industrial manufacturing foreseen as the future for our region. MJC has always been, and will continue to be, the cornerstone technical trainer for the region. As the area develops new manufacturing techniques and facilities, MJC will be right there along the way training up the leaders and technicians to make it all work. MV: Can anyone attend MJC? BS: Absolutely! We are focused on training adult learners – traditional transfer students and folks prepping for the trades or healthcare careers. At the Great Valley Museum, we receive busloads of third- and fourth-graders every week who visit the museum and planetarium and envision themselves as future MJC students and scientists. In our MICL program (Modesto Institute for Continued Learning), we have a committed group of retirees who come together regularly to study and learn new information. On our graduation stage every year, we have everyone from concurrent high school students earning their associate degree before their high school diploma up through grandmothers walking alongside their granddaughters. MV: What is the most popular AA degree? BS: Popular programs include nursing, business, psychology, science, and agriculture. These are well known pathways selected by incoming students. But the nature of college includes exploration and learning about new areas, and we find students shifting their focus from one area to another as they learn more about themselves. MV: What is a great way to get kids involved with higher education? BS: At MJC, we have a goal to get every local K-12 student on campus as many times as possible so they can really see themselves as college students, and see that MJC is their college! In addition to the GVM noted above, we host high school students for theater day, host the junior high science bowl, host the Regional Science Olympiad with SCOE for high school students, and this year we’re adding the History Day competition with SCOE. Music and dance events on campus are prevalent. And our agriculture program is the best in the state, with every local ag student attending multiple events on campus. MV: MJC offers 4 year degrees in certain studies, what are they and how are they working? BS: MJC offers a bachelor’s degree in respiratory care. This week, we had our latest site visit with the accrediting agency, and received extremely positive feedback on the quality and effectiveness of the program. It’s a fully online degree designed for working respiratory care professionals seeking advancement opportunities in their careers. We need to get the word out, as we have some available slots to fill. MV: For students that wish to continue with a 4-year degree, do you articulate with CSU Stanislaus? BS: Oh yes! CSU Stanislaus is our most frequent transfer destination. We participate in the Warriors on the Way program, and a CSUS counselor has an office in our transfer center on campus to connect with our students. In addition, though, our students transfer all over the state. Common destinations include CSU Fresno, CSU Chico, UC Davis, and UC Merced. We are partnering closely with UC Merced to grow the number of transfer students headed that way. MV: You are a member of the North Modesto Kiwanis Club. Why do you think community service is so important? BS: There are so many needs in our community. We can’t meet all of them. But we can meet SOME of them if we put our time and energy into it. It builds community. It builds camaraderie. And it inspires you to do more to serve others. MV: If you had unlimited budget, what would you implement at MJC? BS: For students, I would provide sufficient financial aid to support their living and family expenses so they could be full-time students. Research shows that students enrolled full-time are more successful and complete their programs far more efficiently. But MJC’s students don’t have those luxuries. They must work part-time (often full-time – and often more than full-time!) to support their families, leaving little time for study. They take a class or two at a time, and it’s such a struggle. On the facilities side, we’re going to develop our Facilities Master Plan in coming months. But big picture, we need a new joint training facility for agriculture and industrial technology on the west campus to properly support the Stan 2030 initiative. And to properly support our student athletes, we need a major upgrade of athletic facilities and training rooms on the east campus. Unlike other students, athletes are required to be fulltime students, and their success reflects this commitment. With unlimited resources, I’d love to invest in athletic facilities to help recruit and retain these student athletes.

MV: How do you think your career at MJC has influenced your new role as President? BS: I grew up here! I was 25 years old when I moved here, fresh out of grad school. I have worked my entire adult life in the Yosemite Community College District. I served as part-time faculty, full-time faculty, union negotiator, district negotiator, dean, VP, and now President. I have watched each president over my tenure here – adopting their effective methods, and learning what NOT to do. I know what our people value and can work alongside them. I also know many of the traumatic events they’ve experienced and can navigate those with empathy. MV: Describe your ideal Modesto day. BS: My favorite Modesto day would be a 92 degree Saturday, with a round of FlingGolf with friends in the morning, lunch with my wife and friends sitting outside at a local restaurant, then heading down to the Gallo Grounds for Picnic at the Pops. MV: Our signature question: Beatles or Stones? BS: Beatles. But I’d pick 80s rock over either. Grew up on Journey and Foreigner. Imperial Garden By Chris Murphy

Candy Chen-wu and Raymond Wu and Susanna Lau. ModestoView has been on the hunt for the perfect Potsticker since the demise of Minnie’s. Minnie’s set the gold standard in so many ways for great drinks, Polynesian atmosphere and most importantly, Potstickers. They were the best and I remember being there on the last night they served them. Allegedly, we had the last ones they ever made. SO, the quest continues to find the perfect Potsticker. We have been trying so many, Fat Wong, House of Potsticker, Dynasty, Ming’s, Imperial Garden, East China Town and so many more, and we will keep looking. Some are pan fried and steamed, some are deep fried Gyoza style, but they all have something unique. We have found an amazing new Potsticker at Imperial Garden. This place has an amazing story and best of all, my all-time favorite server and friend Susana Lau, who was our go-to at Minnie’s is now at Imperial Garden. Following the sad closure of Minnie’s, Susana told me that Imperial Garden is her go to and best of all, it is owned by her friend Candy Chen-wu. In 1994, Candy arrived in Modesto. Originally from Guangzhou, China, she was actually on a path toward Seattle as she had allergies. But she happened to find out that a restaurant was for sale, in a great location and she decided to take a leap. She and her husband at the time, invested and opened the Imperial Garden. It was first a small location and they jumped in and made it successful and developed a good following, especially with the Asian community and then developed a larger following. Soon, Candy encouraged her helpful landlord to

let her expand into the space that is there today. In 2018, she became a realtor with PMZ and is investing in our community. With hard work, good food and a wonderful attitude, it has been a success and we are glad she is staying in Modesto. Imperial Garden is traditional Cantonese cuisine and many of the recipes reflect the tastes of Candy’s home city. Candy is not a chef and has always surrounded herself with the right people. Years ago, she found herself without the right team and she worked very hard to find Raymond Wu who has been there for over 15 years. Raymond is a talented tradition chef and shops every Tuesday in San Francisco to find the freshest and unique ingredients for Imperial Garden. Candy also has Vincent Li to run the front of Imperial Garden. Her son is a culinary trained chef and is currently at a Michelin starred restaurant in San Francisco. First, let’s get to the Potstickers (#3). We had a very special version that is steamed and then pan fried on both sides. This creates a nice crispy, but still soft fresh handmade dumpling dough outside. These are wonderful and I will be having these regularly. Also, the potstickers at Imperial Garden are also available with chicken and they have the traditional single sided potstickers that most people recognize. This is great news for Modesto potsticker fans. And you can ask for Susanna’s special hot chili pepper sauce like she used to make a Minnie’s. I have never had egg-white fried rice be-

fore. Most fried rice is made with soy sauce and the complete egg, but the Imperial fried rice is a tasty white fried rice offered with shrimp, pork, beef or chicken. It is really tasty, bright, fluffy and refreshing. If you love spicy green beans this is the place. Fresh green string beans (#67) with peppers are wok fried, crisp and spicy. One of my favorite dishes is the Honey Walnut Prawns, #89. These are rich and deep honey mayonnaise base sauce with cooked and sweetened walnuts. If you have never tried this, please check it out. I used to get these many time in Taiwan and it’s one of my favorite dishes. You can’t visit Imperial Garden without having their Mu Shu Pork. Amazing plum sauce and thin pancakes with a pork and vegetable filling. These are prepared tableside and should not be missed.

Imperial Garden has all of your favorites from sweet and sour to egg rolls, chow mein, beef, seafood and vegetable dishes. They feature traditional Peking Duck as well as a variety of chicken offerings; ginger, almond, lemon, garlic and more. Don’t forget dessert, you can get treats like glazed bananas or apples and sweet sesame balls. Imperial Garden has a “secret” menu. Many of the Chinese style dishes served are American versions that have evolved over time. They also have a Chinese menu of traditional dishes prepared in the traditional Cantonese style with a special menu that you can request featuring dishes like Abalone mushrooms and greens with tofu and Chicken Fried rice and salty fish. For this year’s Chinese New Year of the Dragon, try something new and check out Imperial Garden. They serve beer and wine

It’s Almond Blossom season

and people from all over the world will be coming to the

Modesto area to enjoy one of natures most beautiful scenes. Just like cherry blossoms in Japan or Washington DC, or the turning of the leaves in New England, a similar experience can be found here in our backyard. As by magic, thousands and thousands of acres turn white or light pink with almond blossoms. There are some darker pink peach and cherry blossoms mixed in too, but you can drive, ride or walk for hours checking out this natural wonder. There are millions of trees and the views are amazing. Since this is Modesto USA and home of American Graffiti and the under-construction Graffiti USA Museum, Visit Modesto has put together a great Almond Blossom “Cruise”. This cruise has been capturing the attention of travel guides from around the world. When visitors get here, they can visit great places like Rodin Family Fruit Stand to begin your travels. Some of these tours you can do on your own, and Visit Modesto has a couple of pre-planned tours and even a luxury coach tour where you can enjoy while someone else drives. You can download a map for the Almond Blossom Cruise and go at your own pace and do your thing. There are great restaurants, parks, cafes, and bars along the way so you can enjoy the parts you want.

The easiest place to start is from downtown Modesto. You have two choices, there is a west side tour through Wood Colony where you can explore an orchard at Richard’s Ranch and maybe even do a painting. If you head north, you can visit Stewart and Jaspar in McHenry Village (see more below) on your way to Rodin Farms Fruit Stand on Claribel Road and Oakdale. You can really get a feel about what is going to happen in their orchards and the abundance of their produce stand and even walk in the orchard and get some selfies. Note, let’s make sure that the Rodin Fruit Stand gets preserved in the wake of the North Valley Corridor project.

When you reach Highway 132 (The John Muir Highway), go east to Roberts Ferry. There are many viewings along the way and enjoy snacks at the Roberts Ferry Store. Then head back into Modesto. You will then find yourself back in Downtown Modesto, where many fun watering holes and restaurants will make a great place to relax.

It all starts with the pollinators. Without these hardworking bees, this amazing blossom show would not happen and produce fruit and nuts. Produced at their family farms on the West Side near Patterson, these faves can be enjoyed at their beautiful showcase store in McHenry Village. Make a point to stop by, taste some of the almond treats, do some wine tasting, relax for a bit, and even pick up a gift basket or two or three. When you finish your cruise,

take time to relax in downtown Modesto. You can enjoy a movie, a show at the Gallo Center, State Theatre or the Prospect Theatre. There are many places offering live music and great place to have dinner, many with almond specialties. They offer almond treats of almost any kind and even have honey roasted almond butter, gift baskets and items to take along with you and they have fresh produce, juices and salads to complete your day. ...and there are more ways to celebrate romance. Very important to know that it is so important to love yourself first. You don’t need anyone else to validate who you are and what you can be.

Find yourself some romance and love whomever you want to love. Sharing respect for each other equally is key for love and most importantly, you need to love yourself and cut yourself some slack to give love to others. Everyone has a special place or time of day, whether a special place for just yourself or with a significant other, take some time to enjoy those places and linger for a while. Do you have a favorite booth at a restaurant, favorite bench in the park, or trail to walk or TV show, movie or song. Is it a certain day or night of the year? Take time this this month and find something that is special and celebrate and it doesn’t have to cost a thing. If you are not in a romantic relationship, it’s ok; take time to celebrate yourself and who you are. Love all starts with yourself.

8th Annual Egg Hunt @ Modesto Reservoir

I can not believe it has been Ten years since I first started writing for ModestoView. In that time I have interviewed members of The Monkees, The Stray Cats, Cherry Poppin Daddies, Foreigner, actors Doug and Sam Jones, and more. I have written the GeekView, ComedyView, and written numerous GoModesto. I have covered performing arts and even contributed a few times to the ChefsView. I have written about the Class of 1962 and Lowriders and Modesto’s love affair with classic cars. But I have consistently written about local music since February 2014, 119 MAMAViews written(we took one month off during the pandemic.) I have highlighted local artists, promoters, and venues and encouraged readers to bring their friends to go see our local talent performing. Over the last decade, we have seen bands, breakup, new ones form, long-time venues shuttered and new spots pop up, the ebb and flow. 2020 hit hard with the pandemic but we are finally seeing new growth, new events, and more spots for bands to play. Next month I am going to focus on the permitting process for venues and events in Modesto. Just as the pandemic hit I started hosting This is SKA on KCBP 95.5 FM. Things are ramping up again for the season in our local performing arts community. There are full schedules on our local stages and there is so much to see and experience across our county and into the foothills. One thing is for sure, there is something for everyone. The Gallo Center season is full speed. Everything from Modesto Symphony, country, opera, stage performance. Gershwin Spectacular An American in Paris is a vivid musical postcard with sweeping, romantic melodies punctuated by blues and jazz-inspired rhythms. Be transported to the City of Love with this Gershwin classic that inspired the movie-musical of the same name, starring Gene Kelly February 9 & 10 7:30

Australia’s own The TEN Tenors return to the stage in 2024 celebrating their greatest hits with a new show. The Greatest Hits Live tour will feature the most loved and requested songs from their 28-year history. You Can Dance If You Want To We all understand the importance of regular physical activity for maintaining good health and managing our weight. While our metabolism naturally slows down as we age, it’s crucial to stay active. This FitView is for those who dislike going to the gym. If you’re one of those who equate exercise with a trip to the dentist, you’re not alone. I get it! We all have different preferences, and that’s what makes us unique. Here’s some exciting news: you can incorporate physical activity into your routine without even realizing it. It’s quite simple. Many of us have homes, families, and plenty of household chores to tackle. The thing is, we don’t always get around to doing those chores for various reasons. But here’s a great reason to prioritize them: you can burn calories and improve your surroundings at the same time. It’s a win-win situation. Gardening, for example, allows you to enjoy some sunshine and fresh air while burning off calories. I find taking care of my yard and maintaining the appearance of my house to be a fulfilling way to stay active. According to Harvard Health Publishing, a 150lb individual can burn 205 calories in just 30 minutes of gardening. fascinating, isn’t it? Imagine, you can have a beautiful lawn and get some exercise too. But wait, there’s more! Did you know that vacuuming your house for 30 minutes can burn 99 calories for a 150lb person? The number of calories burned increases with the weight of the individual for any enjoyable household chore. Now, let’s get a little adventurous and have some fun! How about combining all of the above into one afternoon? This includes sweeping the floor, dusting the furniture, changing the sheets on your bed, and if you’re feeling ambitious, doing the laundry. Sure, this may not earn you superhero status on social media, but it will impress your significant other when they see your efforts. By investing more time in taking care of your house both inside and out, you can exercise without even thinking about fitness. The benefits are incredible when you live in a well-maintained and organized home, no matter where you live. Your house is always clean, your yard is the envy of the neighborhood, and your home is free of clutter. And the best part? You’ve burned a significant amount of calories while accomplishing all this! It’s a life worth celebrating with a Happy Dance. This is the lifestyle that works for me. Yes, I can dance!

PHASE 2 CAPITAL DRIVE HAPPENING NOW

The Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum’s Education Room recently received a generous donation of furnished work and materials, transforming this space into a remarkable showcase. Technical Engineered Coatings Inc. of Folsom, California, donated $50,000 towards this project, while West Coast Industrial Flooring of Rancho Cordova, California, contributed $25,000. The Museum is deeply grateful for these substantial contributions, which have allowed for significant enhancements to our Education Room. A dedicated team of craftsmen worked tirelessly to grind, repair, level, sand, and polish the floors in this 6,000-squarefoot room. Not only has this effort significantly improved the room’s appearance, but it has also improved the overall safety for our guests, leveling areas of the floor that once contained underground equipment and mechanics to move agriculture products into the original Lyng’s Feed and Seed building. The collaboration between Technical Engineered Coatings Inc., West Coast Industrial Flooring, and the Graffiti USA Museum exemplifies the power of community and the shared commitment to building public spaces that will be shared for generations to come. Their generous donation has elevated the Education Room, creating a beautiful foundation for the Museum to create a welcoming and inspiring learning space for visitors. Over the next year, the Museum will continue fundraising for this space to add additional access points, a video wall, and more. This space will allow the Museum to begin offering educational programs and provide our community with a widely usable space to host meetings, seminars, academic events, and more. The Museum relies upon the support of our community. Donations from individuals and businesses are essential to this monumental project, transforming this historic building and bringing new life and experiences into our community. February is a busy month. It marks the start of Black History Month, it heralds in the Lunar New Year, it encourages everyone to love a little on Valentine’s Day, there’s a groundhog and past Presidents with holidays and this year there’s an extra day at the end. Ms. M isn’t reliving the same day over and over but love is already everywhere and spring is right around the corner in Downtown Modesto.. May your February arrive with love and things to do that won’t make you break open your piggy bank. Start the month with one of Shakespeares’ most beloved plays, A Midsummer Night’s Dream! On February 2nd. Grace Davis High School Drama Club presents a unique and ethereal experience retelling of this timeless comedy. You’ll journey through moonlit forests, and watch mischievous fairies weave spells and star-crossed seeking solace. It will be a night of whimsical transformation that’s not to miss. Modesto has a great art scene. One of the things I love to do is drive around the city and look at all the different murals. Chartreuse Muse is an amazing perk we have in the city. It is an art gallery, clay studio, and an art school! Muse teachers and visiting guest artists offer classes to suit all interests of students. Students range from kids to adults! Don’t be shy because all skill levels are welcome! The gallery is open from 11 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Friday, and they have open studio hours on Saturdays from 1 pm to 5 pm. This is something I have been wanting to try, and I encourage you to try as well! I hope you all have an amazing February filled with happiness, art, and, of course, love!
