Greetings Modesto Fans! Greetings & Happy New Year! It is a new year already. Unbelievable! So much happened in 2011 it makes your head spin. I love new things, new music, new tastes, new movies, new appetizers, new cocktails, new experiences and 2012 is set to deliver in so many ways. People think that you have to leave our town to experience the newest, best and tastiest. Not true, you can experience it right here. We have the urban feel of the big cities in downtown Modesto, we have the neighborhood bars and grills, we have amazing history with our American Graffiti heritage, and we have the locally owned businesses that do so much for our city and give back so much. This combination of giving and creating makes Modesto special. Modesto USA is the Classic American City. My New Year’s resolution is first and foremost is to continue to be a better husband and parent. My other resolutions including getting more fit on our local bike and running trails, experiencing more of our local dining and continuing my quest to make sure that people in our area know how much there is to do in the Greater Modesto area and to encourage people to be more creative and make a difference. Modesto View is 100% positive about Modesto. That is the Modesto View mission. We want to get people out and about. We want to get people connected on-line, in print, on the radio, on Twitter and Facebook. We will not rest or sleep until people know all there is to do in town and to be aware of the amazing local things here in our community.
profits, new events, new chefs, new recipes, interesting people, movers, shakers, singers, artists, unicycle riders, designers, photographers, students, songwriters, poets, actors, students, bartenders and the people in town that make life interesting. You can get your events listed by simply emailing events@modestoview.com. This month you will meet Modesto City Manager Greg Nyhoff who is making a strong push to make our city vibrant, alive, interesting, and a place that is easy to do business. The right person is on the job and you will see good things from Greg and he is a classic car guy that is champion for Modesto’s Graffiti heritage. What is your resolution? Get involved and make a difference. Buy a local music CD, take a photo tour and put your pics on our Modesto View Instagram page, purchase a local artist’s painting, eat at a place you haven’t tried before, and get out there and experience life. As our own Modesto Famous says, “be good humans”. We thank you, our readers, for making Modesto View the go-to place for things to do. We thank you, our advertisers, for making it possible to print this magazine and spread the word. I thank you, our writers, designers, and sales people for creating something special. 2012 will be amazing and I am proud to be your friend and colleague.

Gong Hey Fat Choy! January 23, 2012 is Chinese New Year! So what better way to celebrate than dining on Chinese Food in an amazing Chinese Restaurant? Dynasty Restaurant has a signature menu and is the place to get your Dim Sum on! Gong Hey Fat Choy! Owners and brothers, Robert and Chang Wu, opened their establishment 6 years ago. Originally from Canton, China, the entire family moved to Modesto 17 years ago. Both brothers are chefs that learned their culinary craft in China culinary schools along with hands-on training with their father in his restaurant in China. Chef Robert is single with one 13 yr. old son he loves to play baseball with. He also likes to play a little golf and visit with friends at the Del Rio Country Club. He loves to travel to Hawaii and Hainan, a breathtaking resort island in China. He was once an avid volleyball player and

now stays in shape by running a couple days a week. Chef Chang is married with 2 grown children in college. I asked Chef Robert how he would be spending Chinese New Year, he was happy to say he’d be creating specials for the menu (crab & steamed chicken) and enjoying cooking for all his loyal customers! Robert is not much of a drinker but he said he might sip on a glass of wine to celebrate. Robert says he’ll still be there years from now as his customers are like family to him and this is more than good enough for him. He attributes much of Dynasty’s success to his staff of 15 people that have been working with him for the past 15 years. Robert’s faves are the Crispy Sea Bass and the Prawn Dumplings. Customer faves include Dim Sum, Honey Walnut Prawns and Coconut Pudding. Dynasty also has several vegetarian items on the

Manny’s Cocktails I consider my dear friend Samantha to be a champion drinker. I don’t flatter myself when I say that I can hold my own better than most, but I’d have to have a sick death-wish to ever put myself up against Samantha in a shot contest. She would shut me down instantly a la intro to Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark. No matter the quantity or how late into the night/morning it may be, girl will still be standing and trying to persuade me into having ‘just one more.’ Best part is, she’s an excellent drinking buddy and won’t ever get drunk-weepygirl on me. So when Samantha, my favorite Modesto drinking partner, told me I had to go to this fantastic dive which dished out even more fantastic cocktails, there was not a shred of doubt in my mind that she was speaking true. So with my good faith in her drinkinghole judgment (because I’m an old lady set in my ways and have a hard time going to new bars), off we went for Thirsty Thursdays at Manny’s Cocktails. Stephanne Rumbaugh, our lovely January featured bartender extraordinaire, was managing thirsty Thursday like a pro. Instead of ordering something specific, Samantha gave a ‘surprise me’ line which resulted in Stephanne making us both one of her secret-signature tri-colored, fruity, fantastic cocktails called the Rocket Pop. As a person who limits her girlydrinks exclusively to Minnie’s Jerks, I was blown away with how damn good the drink was. Every drink Samantha and I ordered with the ‘surprise me’ line that night (never fear, we thankfully

had a D.D.) was unique, fantastic, and surprisingly colorful; and with fun drink names like the Captain’s Dessert, the Horny Housewife, the Sipper, Hawaiian Delight, to name a few, who would be surprised? This is, amazingly, Stephanne Rumbaugh’s first bartending gig. Armed with a deadly combination of innovation, knowledge, her bar-back Rico, and some mean-ass eyeliner, Stephanne has been pouring out fantastic drinks at Manny’s for the past eight years. When asked how she comes up with all of her original concoctions, she stated: “A lot of female customers didn’t want the taste of alcohol in their drinks, but wanted the strength. I’m the same way, so I make drinks that I would want to drink.” The result is absolutely delicious and I’ve rarely seen so many grown men walking around with such colorful drinks, because those drinks are that delectable. The muraled corner bar has been around for ‘forever’ and was originally a pizza joint by the same name. Inside you’ll find two pool tables, darts, a healthy sprinkling of TVs, a scratcher machine, a well-endowed bar, and an ominous black telephone that only accepts incoming calls. Needless to say, Samantha and I had an

On December 8, the McHenry Mansion barely survived a devastating fire, thanks to the quick response of local citizen Pierre Noghli. The fire was primarily exterior, but small interior fires, smoke and water damage will force closure and restoration. Insurance is covering the primary repairs, but a $50,000 deductible is a challenge. Together we can restore the mansion better than ever.

dinner is based off the old legend where a community comes together to make soup by each individual bringing something to share, then eventually, the soup that was made is incredible! I’m letting you know about this ahead of time because the tickets will be sold throughout January. You can contact me atlittlemissabbey@gmail.com or Michael Chiavetta atchiavetta.mi@ monet.k12.ca.us for more info and we will gladly sell you tickets to come to this event! So bring a canned food or two to this dinner and I can guarantee that this will be a great place to get an amazing meal and see videos and presentations that will empower you to help the world, but especially in Modesto as well. Throughout the past year, our Social Media Manager, Madison Murphy (aka my beautiful sister), and I have had the incredible opportunity to attend many concerts and music festivals throughout central California. These experiences have opened my eyes to so many more genres, vibes, and styles of music and I’m the first to advocate for exposure to music. Right here in Modesto, local bands play allover and the Queen Bean often gives us the chance to go out and see them show off their new projects. Here are some upcoming shows you should definitely check out.

The holidays are over and all the magical feelings may be left behind with December, but now it’s time to bring in the New Year! Rumors are that this year, 2012, may be the last, so the youth in Modesto need to make it count! Okay, so as a student at Modesto High and a dedicated member of THE BLACK HOLE, our spirited cheering section for basketball games, I’m sure I’m not the only high school student who is absolutely stoked for the upcoming basketball season. Make sure all of you students, whether you’re cheering for Beyer’s Red Sea, Downey’s Blue Crew, Davis’ Green Machine, Johansen’s Purple Reign, Enoch’s Eagle Entourage or Gregori come out to support your basketball team that has worked extremely hard in the preseason to try and win the desired MMC Title. The rivalries are heating up and the season’s fast approaching so work on those cheers and bust out that spirit. I’m sure that many of you have heard about poverty and hunger throughout the world, but many of us don’t realize that these issues face us right in our hometowns. On February 4th2012, The Stone Soup Dinner presented by Modesto High’s Project Hope will be an event to help raise awareness for families and people of all ages. The

A few months ago, while campaigning for local office, I was fortunate to meet a group of students at Modesto Junior College and discuss local politics. While discussing issues, we talked about how news is provided to the public in small cities. One of the local publications that the students were familiar with was the ModestoView and I was able to create with Chris Murphy an opportunity for students to have a local voice in this magazine. This month, ModestoView is printing the first in a series of articles written by those students I met at Modesto Junior College. I applaud each for their efforts and desire to engage in the public discourse! – Todd Aaronson
KEEP YOUTH BUSY “Sports Corner” for the Youth by: Christopher Corcoran & Renee Munson The younger members of the community need to be able to find athletic teams and venues for play. Keeping the youth busy is vital to their futures because it keeps them involved and gives them goals and the opportunity to interact with other youth. The issues that are the most apparent are the lack of recreational facilities and opportunities. Children and young adults need facilities to socialize
with others that share the same interests and also expose them to diversity and keep them off of the streets and from getting in to trouble. I believe that the community needs more activities for our youth. The following are examples of activities that can be created for the youth. • 3 on 3 basketball at La Loma Junior High School on Friday and Saturday nights. • Game night in a local church basement with volunteer adult
experience. • Chess club could be held for youth ages 9-17 years old. Come down to the Maddox Youth Center Saturday mornings from 8 a.m.-noon. Adult supervision would be from volunteers. Free snacks and drinks could be provided through adult sponsors or parents. Youth could come and enjoy the fun!
supervision and minimal charge for soft drinks and snacks. • “Open Gym” at Riverbank High School Gym. Monday nights from 5:008:30 pm. $2 to get in and stay as long as you want! • Tiny Tots Soccer Camp for children ages 3-5 years who would be interested in learning ball control, trapping, kicking, movement and scrimmage. Volunteers are needed to help supervise and guide them through each drill and make this a fun learning

VILLAGE BAKING COMPANY & CAFé The Village Baking Company on McHenry is not the same as you may remember from years gone by. About two years ago, Joanne Ramos purchased this Modesto landmark. After a successful accounting career, Joanne wanted to own her own business and “pay it forward” for all those who supported her over the years. She dreamt of a business where she could help young people in need of a stable working environment. When presented with the opportunity to purchase the Village Baking Company, Joanne reviewed the books and found herself a winner. Though she says she has never worked harder, she is having the most fun working ever. One of Joanne’s original goals was to create an atmosphere where people feel welcome; both customers and staff

(she employs 36 people). This has led to several changes in what you now see, hear, and taste. First, the décor changed; the café is painted a different color than the main bakery so guests can relax in a warmer environment. Secondly, several of the recipes have changed – to the point where Joanne even told a customer who missed the old cupcakes, “I want you to have the best cupcakes ever.” And Joanne set out to find the best recipe (go by and try them – you’ll agree). The shop is now open for dinner three nights a week – Thursday thru Saturday. The dinner features comfort food (and Joanne’s new favorite dish, the nuttela crepe). Along with expanding the outdoor dining area and patio, the Village Baking Company features a
Sunday mornings hot breakfast, new roasted coffee, and music that provides a gentle background. In addition, they are offering outside catering and food trays for all types of events. The staff and quality of the pastries and food let you know that Joanne’s other goals of “Great Food” and “Great Service” are being achieved. No matter how she crunches the numbers, Joanne knows that this combination of service and food quality relate to sound business growth. Joanne believes she has created an atmosphere that makes a difference on people’s day as well, recounting the story of Angelo and Wally, who, in their 90’s, still visit weekly. They recently told her, “We love what you’re doing.” It’s comments like this that make Joanne happy and the register ring.

By Fiesta Boyz As we go in to 2012 with our DJ turntables spinnin’ and we finish celebrating our new year and resolutions, we turn to one of the local DJs that has been working the radio airwaves over the last few years as well as making hot mixes. We introduce Darren “D. Ferreira”. FiestaBoyz: Give me a short story on your uprising in becoming a DJ? D Ferreira: Ever since I was 12 years old, I knew I wanted to be on the radio. I had a real passion for music and for talking about music. I used to spend hours in my bedroom playing albums on an old school turntable and I would do my own radio show and record it with an old school tape recorder that I saved up to buy, took forever to save up that $20. My love for music soon had me DJ’ing parties and other events by the time I was 17 which is something I’m still doing tothis day. FB: Iwould love to know how you jumped into radio? DF: In 1998 I remember hearing one of those commercials on the radio that said “Have your ever wanted to be on the radio?” It was a commercial for a place called the Academy of Radio Broadcasting in Fremont, Ca. I seemed to have heard that commercial at just the right time in my life. I was veryunhappy at my current job and was looking for a change. Being married, the decision to quit my job and go back to school was one that had to be made as a team. I talked with my wife Michelle about it and she pretty much said “this is what you have always wanted to do, I can take care of our bills while you go back to school so go for it”. Did I marry the right woman or what!! I graduated in January of 1999 and was on the radio on B93.1 here in the Central Valley less than 2 months later. And then just 5 years later I was actually Program Director of Mega 100. FB: .During your time in radio any moment that really stuck out for you and made a impact on your carrier. DF: Ihave given many lectures at schools since being on the radio and I always tell
12
the students about my greatest day in radio, which also happened to be the worst day in our nation’s history. September 11, 2001. What should have been a normal 4 hours on the air, turned into about 12 hours on air and working behind the scenes. I was asked to anchor the news on the station I was on at the time which was also being simulcast on 3 other stations. It was that day I trulylearned first hand that radio is about getting information out to the listeners, something I think many stations have forgotten. FB: Give me more info on your most resent gig on radio. DF: I had spent the last 4 years at KHOP @ 95-1 where I had the chance to wear many hats. I was Assistant Program Director, I had done afternoons, middays, weekends. I was the mixshow coordinator, Public Affairs Director and I also did production. KHOP gave me the opportunity to show the valley my skills as a mixer and opened the doors for me to mix for a nationally syndicated show which played my mixes on more than 30 stations. KHOP also gave me the opportunity to get more involved with community events and charities which has put me in contact with some really amazing people. FB: Iunderstand you and a few other where let go due to Cumulus Cuts, tell me how this all come to play and your feelings about the ordeal? DF: Only one bad thing has ever happened to me during my time in radio and it happened on November 2, 2011. That was the day I was let go from a radio job for thefirst time in my career. I had left for the day and had picked up my son. Ireceived a call that I needed to come back to work, I knew cuts were being done and had a feeling I was about to be a victim of them. I was just upset that I had to bring my son with me and he had to sit in what just about to be dad’s old office. I loved being on KHOP, but I was kinda of relieved that I no longer had to wonder if
I would lose my job. Not knowing is a very stressful position to be in. FB: Now that is all behind you, word is you still continue to work, and sounds like you may have a new radio gig lined up? Is this true? if so what can you comment on? DF: First of all I would like to say, I have no ill will towards KHOP. I had been working to establish my mobile DJ business since I was with MEGA 100 in 2005. Once I was let go from KHOP, I went full on into booking gigs. Matter of fact, business became so good after I was let go from KHOP, that there were a couple of radio stations that contacted me, but it wouldn’t have been a good fit for the direction my life is going now. Now with that being said, there is a possible return to radio in early 2012 that would still allow me run my ownbusiness and be back on the air. (fingers crossed) FB: Any personal shout outs to your fans? DF: I really hate the word “FANS”, at least when it comes to me. The people who like what I do have always been considered supporters and friends. I have actually seen an increase in the number of Facebook Friends I have since losing my radio job, and I’m hoping that’s because people enjoy me more as a person, father, husband than as THAT GUY on the radio. Those who support me know how I feel about them because I always make sure to let them know I appreciate them for their support. For those who love my mixes, they will always be available on my Facebook Page www.facebook.com/ darren.d.ferreira. And to those who hope to hear me on the radio again, hopefully that will be happening very soon. Inter-Faith Ministries An Interview with Tom Elrod – Board Chair Most of us get up and go to the kitchen cupboard and get something to eat EVERY MORNING. Most everyone has lunch EVERY DAY. We’re sure the majority of us have dinner EVERY NIGHT. Typically, the biggest decision we face is “WHERE ARE WE GOING TO EAT?” or “BEEF OR CHICKEN?” not “WILL I HAVE ENOUGH FOOD FOR DINNER?” However… the luxury of having two or three meals per day is something that thousands of people in our community do not have. Tom Elrod, Sr. Vice President of Morgan Stanley/Smith Barney here in Modesto, has been involved with InterFaith Ministries (IFM) for about 7 years. Recently, Tom told us ‘what’ Inter-Faith Ministries is all about. “Years ago, I was a skeptic. I believed that the food pantries and food banks were mainly handing out food to the lazy
or addicted. I was wrong: The majority of the hungry in our community do not look like the person at the intersection holding a cardboard sign offering to work for food. They are not the active drug user looking for money to satisfy their next drug craving. Surprisingly, the hungry in our community don’t look much different than me… or you. “One face of hunger in our community looks like a mother of seven who lost her job, the children’s father gone, and her unemployment benefits running out. She came to our pantry on a Saturday hoping to get food for her growing children. She had nowhere else to turn. Because of the faithful giving of time, talents, and treasures of so many in our community, IFM was able to provide this desperate mom with groceries to feed her entire family, three meals a day, for several days. “Another face of hunger is, of the
approximate 40,000 to 50,000 people served by IFM each year, over 50% of them are children. Children, who did nothing to deserve to go to bed on an empty stomach night after night, if not for the support of a caring community. Hunger among the needy does not discriminate between the color of skin, gender, or age.
the hungry and needy that Inter-Faith MV: What month is the ‘toughest’ month for IFM to service clients? IFM: July and August. MV: What do you need the most of at IFM (milk, bread, clothes, etc.) IFM: Of the foods purchased, Tuna, Soup and Peanut Butter are the most expensive items and most needed.
IFM was founded over 40 years ago by a small group of congregations with the desire, and more importantly the willingness, to provide food and other basic needs to the most vulnerable in our community.
MV: Many of us want to volunteer with our children. Is there a way we can do that with IFM? IFM: A young boy named Theo Miller started a food drive for IFM that helped us tremendously. Food drives are a great way to get children involved in charitable giving and understanding the needs of others. Clothing drives are also needed. There are not many tasks available or safe for small children.
Recently, IFM successfully added fresh fruits and vegetables to the pantry through the implementation of a gleaning program that supports local farmers with volunteers to clear excess harvest and to provide fresh food for those in need. “I’m proud to be part of Inter-Faith ministries,” Tom stated, “and amazed by the work of our staff and volunteers. Inter-Faith needs your support… rather,
If interested in volunteering, children and parents are welcome to come for a tour of their facilities. Please call the office and Barbara or Christ will arrange a time (209) 572-3118.

Keepin’ It Local Happy New Year!!! So extremely excited for 2012! As a New Year approaches, so many things go through my mind..... What should I change?... What do I wear?... What do I want to accomplish this year? At this point I start to do some self-reflecting to figure out what exactly I want out of this New Year 2012. At least one of these questions is easily answered and can be easily accomplished. As we welcome the New Year we should welcome new additions to our wardrobe too. So let’s get going and start this New Year off right by revamping our wardrobe and keepin’ it local. Downtown Modesto is filled with interesting shops, especially when walking down J St. and Bonnie J is one
of my new favorites. Elegant clothing, an enchanting chandelier, and a gigantic Audrey Hepburn print hang from the wall. Susan, the owner, named her beautiful boutique after her inspiring mother, Bonnie J. It started as a shoe
from major designers can be found throughout the boutique. Upscale clothing and jewelry make you feel like you are shopping in Nordstrom yet the prices are within a decent budget. Steve Madden and French Laundry are just
warm knit beanies. Rhinestone hoodies and sequin accented sweaters are also nicely displayed around the boutique and match perfectly with the blingin’ jewelry. Susan only orders about 3 of each design and size so if you want something special
store in a smaller space on J St. and expanded into a larger floor space with many more boutique items. They have been open for four years now and love the new location. The latest fashions
a few brands they carry. My favorite shoes in the place have to be the studded out Vince Camuto pumps. OMG, so cute!! Blingin’ bags full of studs and rhinestones along with jeweled out caps and beanies make perfect additions to the heels or knitted sweaters. Handmade local greeting cards can be found by the register counter. The wallets and I-Pad cases are perfect necessities to match those holiday gifts.
you better go shop fast before it’s ripped off the rack by someone else.
The best-selling items for winter are the knit scarves and the tall boots. The jewelry pieces are also great sellers. What I loved about the jewelry here is that different type of pieces are offered, like bronze colored charm bracelets, grey and black crystal necklaces, and gold and silver earrings. It is also quite easy to find a variety of matches by mixing textures and colors of the jewelry. Flowers made with crystals are sewn into
The boutique also plans Fan Parties for popular demand events. Recent special Fan Parties included the Breaking Dawn Movie Premiere and the Holiday Fan Party. Check the website www. shopbonniej.com for more details and upcoming dates.

Interview with Greg Nyhoff Interview Conducted by Chris Murphy
Modesto, USA is a Classic American City. We are different than any other city in the world as we are the home of the stories and the legends that created the film American Graffiti. Our small town experience, big city culture and our agriculture economy feeds the world and attracts companies large and small and families new and old. We are the same in many ways as our area has been battered by a global recession and local issues for which we have beenvictimized by uninformed national media. Modesto, USA stands poised to tell our real story, share our opportunities and plan the way for the decades to come. Who do we want to be? What can we be? How will our arts and culture make us a shining example of future city planning. This month we check in with City Manager Greg Nyhoff as he shares his plan on how we evolve as a leading city. Greg was born in Denver, Colorado and has been married to Cindy nearly 30 years. He has one daughter Anna and two sons Phillip and Luke. College graduate Anna works in Manteca, Phil is a senior at Patten College in Oakland and Luke is a Junior at in the IB program at Modesto High They all have made a nice transition to California. With over 25 years’ experience in municipal government, 17 in City Management most recently in Colorado Springs and he arrived in Modesto USA in 2008. Let’s meet Greg. ModestoView: What is the most enjoyable part of being a city manager? Greg Nyhoff: Watching the community grow and believe in themselves as they realize their opportunities and assets and
16
grow them, taking great pride in calling themselves “Modestans.” I have yet to see a community that is thriving without a strong business foundation, a first class arts and culture environment, and a nonprofit community of volunteers stepping forward every day. MV: What about Modesto interested you?
GN: Before I accepted the position in Modesto, Cindy and I visited three times. The community neighborhoods, the world-renowned businesses, small businesses, afirst-class dining and entertainment environment, and a strong and beautifulagriculture setting and economy is what we found. Plans for downtown residential/office/ commercial development indicated great promise and hope for strengthening downtown. MV: Modesto was hit especially hard in this economy just after you arrived in
2008, do you see positive change soon? GN: The building industry and our property values have been impacted most severely. These have been the two greatest factorsleading to our high unemployment and foreclosure rates. Over the past couple of quarters we are seeing increases in sales tax revenue, which indicates business improvements. This, in turn, leads to the City’s ability to stabilize our public safety general services. We find our city government in no different situation than the average homeowner or business owner. Revenues have declined significantly
and we have had to cut our budgets by over 20% overall. The anticipation of a new day is raising hope for a brighter future for Modesto. How we will spend our time and efforts now will determine how bright we shine in the future. MV: What are the two most urgent issues facing Modesto? GN: Solid job creation and improvements to our severely reduced
property values are the two most urgent issues we face today. The City Council recently took action to reevaluate impact fees and reduced them for businesses wanting to grow or expand. The City Council has established the growth of business and creating jobs as its highest priorities, so much so that they unanimously voted to provide incentives to businesses creating new jobs. The Alliance recently announced a goal to create 1,000 new jobs over the next six months. Every business hiring at least one new employee will get us there. We must invest in ourselves, buy local and support our local economy. Each time a job is created, an employee receives a paycheck. If that employee spends that paycheck locally, they support a local business who then hires another employee … and the cycle begins again. We must SUPPORT AND INVEST LOCALLY!! MV: How can people in the community get more involved? GN: Acommunity must be able to manage its interpersonal relationships in a positive – civil and respectful – manner. Allowing an open culture of ideas breeds solutions that make a difference. I would like to see Modesto residents reporting and stamping out tagging. Tagger’s create blight and blight causes a decline in property values and creates an inhospitable landscape. LOVE MODESTO – Volunteer your time to participate in city-wide cleanup efforts that occur several times throughout each year. Become a part of the solution. It makes a difference. What can the youth of our community do to help with our next generation
planning? My son, who is enrolled in the IB program at Modesto High, is required to volunteer for a specified number of community service hours. I think all of our youth should have the same requirement. Through service, they will gain such a better understanding of their community and get the satisfaction of making a difference. Is there really a good partnership for structure and planning with the County? In the past our relationship with the County has been one of a competitive nature. Responding to the downturn in the economy both the City and County have realized the need to partner on services where we have the most in common. These have included the Animal Shelter and the Regional Fire Authority. We are also discussing regional transportation and transit. We believe that there are still many more opportunities to evaluate. I look forward tothis successful regional partnering to grow to higher levels in 2012. MV: Why is a healthy Downtown Modesto important for the entire community?
GN: Successful cities have a successful downtown core. It shows strength, creates a center for our community to gather, live, work and function efficiently. Healthy downtowns send a message and are a beacon of civic pride and character. It attracts interest and business.
look at parking, outdoor dining, vacant store fronts, policing, and the likes. Formulating a community-wide assessment of areas for improvement will help us develop recommendations of how to do it better and implement a new “Hospitality Zone” in downtown Modesto.
MV: When will we have downtown housing? GN: It was so close to becoming a reality right before the housing bubble broke. The City recently made the land use codes very flexible in order to make mixed uses the preference for downtown. Unfortunately, until real estate values climb, downtown housing projects are not economically feasible.
It’s time to create and market a theme. Our heritage of American Graffiti seems to be a great fit!
MV: What plans do you envision in 2012 to make downtown Modesto even more vibrant and attractive? GN: The City recently adopted design standards which will, over time, enhance the attractiveness of downtown. The business community, the city and our citizens should perform an audit or “hospitality assessment” of our downtown. The assessment should

MV: How do we tell the rest of the world how good Modesto is and can be? GN: Modesto has tremendous assets. I often tell City staff to show your value to the community. I think it is time for us to unite as business, citizens, neighborhoods, non-profits and government in a concerted effort to positively market Modesto. The momentum to accomplish this has already begun with a number of groups. In order to have the greatest marketing impact, we must unite and add positive to positive to positive.
GN: Iusually start my day by sharing a coffee with my wife at a local coffee shop. Then I work on my trees and yard for a couple hours, depending on the weather. On a good day, I’ll work out in my home gym and then go watch either the Modesto Nuts or Modesto High baseball team. I like to have a nice early dinner in downtown Modesto before I catch a movie at the Brenden Theatre. The evening will end with a great dessert in one of our downtown restaurants. MV: Beatles or Stones? GN: It would have to be the Beatles, but Chicago is coming to the Gallo Center, that is definitely a concert I won’t miss.
MV: Describe your perfect day in Modesto.

TELL ME A STORY As a Senior citizen you might want to make some New Year’s Resolutions too. 1. INCREASE YOUR SOCIAL NETWORK: If you have not been to our local senior center you truly don’t know what you are missing. My mom has created some wonderful friends from taking a step and going to Modesto Senior Center and now goes to the Ceres Center at least weekly to play Aggravation with a group of friends. There is a calendar of events at each center and you can participate in what you like to do. Call the center, ask for the Director and make plans to go. That way you have someone to meet you when you arrive. And who knows, You may make a new friend or two along the way. 2. GETTING HELP: If you live alone or do not have family that you see regularly and are finding it hard to get out to shop, do housecleaning, do laundry, or get to doctor appointments call the local agencies. A couple of our local agencies are Senior and Caregiver Information & Assistance (209) 558-8698 and Multipurpose Senior Services Program (209) 558-2346 they can provide you with information regarding a companion or home-helper for a few hours a week. Don’t be embarrassed to reach out, just remember that we all need help
sometime. 3. TELL YOUR STORY: Make a scrapbook, video, journal or tape record your life. Tell your life story; where you were born, your family, from your earliest childhood memories to the present. Make it as detailed as you can; include pictures and other mementos. How many times have you been asked “tell me the story about where you grew up, how did you meet grandpa/grandma, what was it like riding a horse to school?” 4. SCHEDULE REGULAR EXERCISE: As we age, even a little exercise will help us feel better, maintain muscle tone, improve balance and keep our joints moving. Walking is a great exercise, free and easy. Walk with a friend or meet up at the senior center and participate in their scheduled exercise program. There are walking clubs everywhere, have a grandchild find them on the internet, the Vintage Faire Mall opens early for walkers and every September you can join the Senior Stride Program at Dry Creek Park. Making New Year’s resolutions creates a time when we can plan to make a difference in our lives. Choose at least one thing and make a plan to become better, happier and healthier this year.
MODESTO VIEW TESTED GalloCenter Sippie Glasses This is a huge breakthrough at the Gallo Center. ModestoView loves symphony, ballet and special events as much as anybody, but rock and roll, music, theater sometimes need a liquid refreshment during the event. Now, you can get wine and beer in a custom designed spill proof cup. It is clear so you know how much you have left and the top is easy to operate in the dark and delivers that much needed taste of Chardonnay or Cab while the pliets and pirouettes entertain. ModestoView gives the Gallo Center Sippie Glasses a thumbs up for convenience, efficiency and thirst relief.

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

Happy New Year everyone! 2011 was a great fitness year for Modesto with opportunities for fitness, fun and healthy living. Here is the rundown of some of our fantastic local races I was able to participate in 2011.
Everyone Loves Henry and it shows by the amount of people who show up for this run. It’s at Stan State University and the 2 courses are within The University. It’s a good family fun event from The Turlock Running Club is always right on.
Don Osborne Memorial Run: Oakdale This event is generally the start of my racing season, the weather can be unpredictable but the course isn’t. Start the year on in the competitive frame of mind.
Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon: No two ways about it, a year in planning went into The 2nd Annual Modesto Marathon; but nobody expected on having hurricane force winds and rains the night before the event last year. Just the same, the organizers made the best of it including this DJ/Entertainer.
Almond Blossom Run: Ripon A very well organized race, it offers two courses, the1-mile race and the 8K. It’s always been a must race for the year. Henry’s March: Turlock
Run for Health: Modesto I love this race! It happens in The Spring and as many of you know, I’m a sunshine kind of guy. It takes place at Dry Creek

Park in Modesto and the course is just as friendly as the people who attend it.
during my sprint, but it’s a good, fun, family race and they got the job done.
Chocolate Festival Run: Oakdale Who doesn’t love Chocolate and Running? It’s a good race, well organized and you get a free entry of fun to The Oakdale Chocolate Festival. Weather is usually nice and warm.
Spirit of Giving Run: Modesto Trained for this run all year long, not because I wanted to out-run the other adult racers, but more-so to out-run the kids. Ultimately, I didn’t race this event at all as rumor has it that The Grinch and the Event DJ are one in the same and the Grinch had to run away fast after the kicks to the shins he received from the children at The Turkey Trot Run and his scolding from Santa. Heaven help The Grinch if these kids ever catch him. A great race to end the year on!
Park Fete: Escalon This screaming fast race happens in Escalon and it’s grown in popularity. Starts kind of early, but that’s a must to beat the heat. A good run followed by a fun festival. Cancer Awareness Run & Ride: Modesto My favorite race of the year! We get to run or ride our bikes for cancer awareness. The plus side of this event, it’s a huge festival that brings in as many as 3000 people. Not all of them run or ride it, but they do take advantage of the free health information available. Friends, if youjust do one race next year, you have to do this one. It’s super-sized good. Wine and Cheese Run: Riverbank The timing was right on, the course was well covered, and outside of running low on water for the runners last year, no complaints here. But, please keep me in mind for next year’s race “Shadow Chasers,” rumor has it that I have an amazing sound system that will bring the party to life like K’TEL’s “Mr. Microphone” did back in the 80’s. Turkey Trot: Modesto It’s always a full turn out, but this year I couldn’t stop thinking of that song after the race by Carly Simon, “Nobody does it better.” The organizers did do another fantastic job, but I would have preferred that the crowds where sectioned off from the finish line, a few got in my way
Looking back at all the races I entered in 2011, a nice thought entered my soul: when we enter a race/run, we not only get the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle, but with each race we run, we also help out the non-profit that benefits from these races. Modesto View readers, I’ll ask you to take this thought into the new year. Keep your faith strong in fitness and remember, when you enter a local run, you are not only giving yourself a healthy heartbeat but also helping much of the need in our communities. So there you have it! It’s all good with the only “ugly” here being the weather. As for the “bad”, well that’s on me because I wasn’t able to race in all the races I wanted to last year. For more information and the 2012 dates of these races and others, log onto www. shadowchase.org or www.active.com/

BANJOS & BASS My editor has to be really hating me this morning. This piece was due last night but I had to pump a little local life into my head to get the job done right. I had to get out and experience killer local eats, heartbreaking live tunes, and amazing folks. Those things are the best part of all of this. I love being in the middle of it all. I started last night out with one goal in mind- To see my favorite local band debut their latest album. Now when I say album, I really mean album. Not an Airplane sauntered into Cafe Deva last night like they owned the placed and promptly set down a big box of good old-fashioned LPs. They did not have a single CD to sell. This was their night. They were doing it their way and they did it right. They did it oh so damn right. They did it with banjos, a stand-up bass, pounding percussion and a pure almost painful set of lyrics that clearly explain why I have heard people compare their lead singer, Nick Shattell to a young Bob Dylan. When it was over I was satisfied but craving more. That is the point in my head when I know that the music was good. Music is my drug I suppose. I need an injection as often as possible. Dinner took place at Harvest Moon where I made their Dinah burger my new friend and my beautiful date found comfort on a cold night in a steaming plate of pasta primavera. We really enjoy Harvest Moon. Give it a shot if you are looking for a special dinner infused with color and creativity. Check out the hallway on the way to restroom where photos and autographs from local icons like Granddaddy and Flying Blind sit side-by-side with photos signed by people like Loretta Lynn. All of this
memorabilia tells a story about Modesto that was nice to hear. Tonight will find us at a house party hosted by Mike and Jennifer Allsup. Live music will be featured and something will probably be grilled up and delicious. They always make sure to really take care of their friends. That can’t be an easy task when someone has an entire city of friends. One of the folks that has promised to meet me tonight is a guy named Hippie Dave. I saw Dave for the first time in a long time last night at the not an Airplane show. He explained to me in his hazy perfectly unclear way that he has attended and chronicled over 900 local music shows of every type imaginable in the past nine years. Then he said something that blew me away. He has been collecting articles about me and clips of my words published in Modesto for as long as he has known about me. He plans to hand me a folder tonight. This will go to my kids one day. I am grateful I am honored. I am typing that into my computer right now as a live version of Bob Dylan’s “Rolling Stone” plays in the air and a few tears make their way down my face. I believe those words to be true. I have not been totally healthy lately but I am totally happy because I am finally home. It will all be ok as long as I stay home. Let’s have an amazing 2012 in Modesto. Let’s eat good and spend our nights lost in art and color. Let’s make new friends and lovers and memories that we can share when we are as old as Hippy Dave. I love this place. Thank you for letting me ramble. I appreciate you. Make sure to buzz me on the old Twitter machine. I tweet as @ ModestoFamous.

POETRY & JAZZ And now that Christmas has come and gone once again we lift a glass to Auld Lang Syne and it’s time to make those resolutions or at least some darn good intentions for the New Year. I am resolving to continue to push and support live music, whether at our upscale venues or on the street corner by any means possible to keep our community alive and vibrant. As Mike Wolf Steinwayendorsed Jazz pianist- says “in this economy everybody’s a Jazz musician, everyone is struggling,” but this too shall pass. Smoking hot shows for January: Harmonica Blowout, Jan. 26th; Eric Johnson, Jan. 27th; Ronnie Montrose, Feb. 4th. Find more info at: www. thestate.org The Gallo Center is continuing to bring in a wide variety of regional and national acts with sold-out shows for Dave Koz and Myth Busters. Gallo Hits For January: Lily Tomlin, Jan. 14th; Big Bad Voodoo
Daddy, Jan. 15th; and Judy Collins, February 1st. Check out www.galloarts. org for more shows! The bands play on at the Barkin’ Dog Grill supporting live music in an all-age environment. The food is good in a casual setting and the mighty John Black of JB Presents continues to bring in smoking local and regional R & B acts. The Barkin’ Dog also has a Jazz Jam with David Dow on Thursdays where musicians can sit in and network. Camp 4 Wine Café, Fuzio Universal Bistro, Chefs of New York, and Galleto are all supporting weekly live music. Deva features the weekly Thursday Night Ramble, presented by Eli Lester and house band Big Earl. If you get out only one Thursday make sure it’s the Third Thursday’s Art Walk in Downtown ‘cause even in the chill of winter there are a lot of events happening that night. The Boardroom, also in Downtown, continues an ambitious schedule of live music 4

This is the first article in a series that we have planned that will feature local folks that we see almost daily but do not know much about. Robert House is the madman that rides his unicycle on McHenry Avenue every day. It was nice to chat with him a bit. There is a storied history behind this single-wheeled street pirate that is quite interesting. MF: How long have you been doing this? Some people remember you doing this as far back as the 90s. What got you started and motivated to really never want to stop? House: I have been riding daily in Modesto for 15 years. I was trained by an old friend and as soon as he showed me the ropes I knew that I would want to keep on riding for as long as I could. Learning to ride and balance was like

getting set on fire. I was hot for it right away! My firstride was from Yosemite to Briggsmore on a unicycle I bought for $5 at a yard sale. MF: What is the craziest thing that has happened to you on the road? House: People are crazy! I have things thrown at me all the time. I have been soaked with Big Gulps, coated in egg yolk and almost knocked over by shoes. I really hate classic Converse Chuck Taylor’s. They seem to be thrown at me the most. MF: How many unicycles have you ridden over the years? Do you have a fantasy cycle that you would love to own one day? House: I have ridden six different unicycles over the last 15 years. I would love to own a Torker unicycle if I can save
the $280 to makethat happen. I’d like to have a shot at the 96 mile record one of these days. MF: People are curious to know more about you. What is the one thing that you would really like them to know? House: I carry a photo of my friend, mentor and teacher, Terry Don Vanaman in my wallet wherever I go. I ride for Terry more than I ride for myself. He died this year on April 20th after a battle with Cancer. I miss him but I plan to honor his memory every day that I can. MF: Give it to me in one line. Tell me what really keeps you motivated to keep riding in the heat, cold and rain. Tell me why you don’t stop. House: It’s pretty simple- McHenry Ave
is my stage and I want to dance all over it.

JILL’S PLAYLIST I hope you had a wonderful Christmas! I love January. Everyone is motivated, and in my particular circle of musicians and music lovers, that usually means new bands, music, and ideas. So with no further small talk, let’s get down to the music.
Hit and Run- “Walk with Me” – Rock/ Hard Rock In the spirit of the New Year, I would like to start with the newest band I know of in the Modesto scene. I was able to hear this band before they’d had recorded anything, and saying I was pleasantly
surprised by the amount of talent is the understatement of 2011.They only have one song recorded as of now, but do yourself a favor and go check out the live show… made me an instant fan. Chad Seiverson - Acoustic/ solo
If the name sounds familiar to you, it should! The lead singer of We The Same can now be found flaunting his mad skills by himself, all stripped down, (musically of course, don’t get your hopes up girls!) Now we get double the entertainment with We the Same and Chad both gigging

Setting Attainable Goals for your Music Career in The New Year
By Tara Tinsley I am sitting here right now relaxing after a long walk along the canal nearest to my house and I am happy. I was stressed forever living away from Modesto and it feels great that the stress stayed where I was. I feel an overwhelming sense of ease here and that is how I enjoy living. This is nice. It has been just a couple of weeks since I have been back and I have already been contacted by a number of old friends. I have had the chance to get some great inside information and learn about some interesting places that I have never experienced before. I was contacted today by my friend Nick Shattell of the band, not an Airplane and he was excited to tell me about his latest
album, “It Could Just Be This Place” that will be released online via iTunes, Amazon and Spotify on November 8th. I am listening to the pre-release copy that he attached and I love it. I always get lost in his passionate lyrics. I have followed Nick and his various efforts for a long time and it is nice to see those efforts really paying off. The coolest thing about not an Airplane is that they are not doing what they do for the money. These guys just want to be heard and have a chance to celebrate music. To make that a bit easier they are tweaking the online music distribution system with this album so more people can afford to hear it. They will release the entire album as two
tracks titled “Speak In” and “Speak Out” in the spirit of a classic LP. Fans will not have to pay a high album price online to own the collection of songs. Shattell feels confident about this plan but understands that there could be a glitch with the idea. “This album was designed to transcend the media forms and remain in tact as a true LP, side A and side B. The other beautiful part about this is the fact that even iTunes system of pricing will be baffled by this, and most people should be able to get the album for only $2. It will also be on Spotify, and Amazon, with hopefully the same pricing confusion,” explains Shattell. In addition to listening to music, I have also been trying to eat my way through Modesto. In the last few days I rediscovered the “Drag It Through the Garden” pizza at Extreme Pizza and the “Starbucks Roll” at Tokyo Express. I also believe that I have discovered the premier destination for fried food buffs in Modesto. I walked into Bleachers Grill at 222 McHenry Ave. to get a burger and discovered an interesting list on their menu. These folks serve up 20 different types of French fries along with other fried goodies
including green beans and pickles. This is chubby guy foodie heaven. I am going to ask if I can live in the back room and be their official taste tester. I think this is a brilliant plan, but I’ll have to ask Sharlene and her crew for permission. Enjoy November in Modesto. Eat a really big bird, hold someone close and explain that you could not be more thankful for them, challenge your children to a leaf fight at Graceada Park and enjoy a bit of shopping at the Handborn Modern craft Bazaar on November 26. Handborn will be taking over the streets at seven different locations downtown to display their cool homespun gifts and crafts. Killer music and good eats are usually also involved. Good times! Thank you for reading my words! Find me online on Twitter as @modestofamous or help me build a network for locals by adding me to a circle on Google+ at tinyurl.com/plusruben. This little city is growing up and getting diverse. Let’s keep that vibe strong! Photo caption: not an Airplane is set to release their latest album, “It Could Just Be This Place” on November 18. Rockin’ Rick and the Rhythm Wranglers By Jennifer Allsup Rockabilly is fun and what is so exciting is how many great local Rockabilly bands are playing around the area and even crazier how many greats our local bands have played with. Facebook got a facelift with its new “Timeline,” and I am a fan. I’ve seen mixed reviews, but both as a user, and a marketer, I think it’s genius! As a user, what Facebook has done is developed a platform for me to create a virtual scrapbook of my entire life. From the baby pictures, to when I first learned to ride a bike, Prom, first day of college, graduation... My entire life can be loaded to Facebook, sequenced by date, tagged by location, so that I have an easily catalogued accounting of my life. In addition to how you can catalog life events, one of the great tools is how selective you can be in sharing them. A trip to Vegas that I only want available to my eyes. Done. The birth of a child that I want close friends to see, but not my boss. Done. What this is going to force me to do

Murder Men, and many more! They have also had the great privilege to play at car & bike show events such as - The Bella Donna Beauties Presents: Everyone Gets Leid 2; D-Day at the Altamont 1 & 2; D.T.M.C. Presents: 2nd Annual Motorcycle Camp-Out; SO-Cal Invades Nor-Cal; Dave Bombers presents: Night of the Living Werewolf; The Rollin’ Roulettes Presents: Rock ‘N’ Roll Luau; Mike Miller Presents: Rockabilly Invasion 2; Rumble Co. presents: Suck, Squeeze,& Bang Blowout Car & Bike Show; the Summer Sultry Shindig; and the Vaudeville Road Show. Rockin’ Rick has been burnin! Rockin’ Rick & the Rhythm Wranglers are also signed to a record label based in California called HI-HO Silver Records (which is Rockin’ Ricks label). This label
deals with Rockabilly, Americana, and Western Music including these other killer acts: Pat James & the Nite Crawlers, Miss Michelle, Boraxo Jones & The Electric West, Sagebrush Bob & the Double Barrel Boys, Drivin Nails, Anni Boelyn, The Drift Alley Lobos, Little Jessie & the Pussy Hounds, The Midnight Trio, & Gearbox. Rockin’ Rick is also planning a European Tour next year to spread their swingin’ ways. You can also find Rockin’ Rick & the Rhythm Wranglers at Viva Las Vegas 15, HI-HO Silver Records on Myspace, Youtube, & Facebook! If you are interested in doing some recording, Rockin’ Rick is always looking for new and upcoming artists to record. They are based out of Sonora and the Los Angeles area and do not miss the chance to see them and make our Rockabilly scene hotter and hotter.

as well is be more aware of my “friends” list, and the groups that I have them in. As a marketer, this makes Facebook that much more attractive of a marketing channel. As soon as I put the life event of getting my first car in 2001, with no new cars since, and change my job status from Associate to Manager, I’ve just identified myself as someone who is likely to be in the market for a new car. Jackpot for all the car dealerships. This type of selfidentification is almost limitless, and an incredible tool for marketers. I know some people get weirded out by what they consider an invasion of privacy, but the way I see it, I’m going to get ads one way or another. I’d rather them be relevant than SPAM, so I’m okay with it. Additionally, all of the time that will go into creating my Timeline, and grouping
my friends, goes into making Facebook a better user experience. This in turn will keep me coming back more often, staying on the site longer, which in turn, gives advertisers more opportunities to reach me. Well played sir. I know there will be those who disagree. I’ve heard Facebook needs to stop
changing. It’s too complicated. It’s an invasion of privacy. Perhaps. But if nothing else, I give Facebook credit for doing its best to avoid becoming MySpace. By innovating, refreshing, and trying to stay ahead of the curve, while they may not always be able to please everyone, they have a fan in me, and I’m sure that makes Mr. Zuckerberg sleep well at night.
GO MODESTO! Which came first
the strategy or the ad? Have you seen my girl? Flying Blind has taken flight again and they are doing new music, their favorites, and a Flying Blind live show is something you shouldn’t miss. Go hear one of Modesto’s favorite bands on Jan 13. Doors open at 6 at the Fat Cat Music House.
