EDITOR’S Greetings Happy New Year Modesto Friends!

Happy New Year from the Murphys

Can you believe it is already 2014? What? You didn’t know either. I guess the fact that you are reading the January ModestoView magazine might give it away. It seems so cliché to be shocked that it is already 2014, but this year did in fact blow by. I am feeling the time warp as my oldest daughter is now off working for Adobe and living in Los Altos. My youngest is doing great at UC Berkeley and Becky is more busy than ever with her art and other projects. We have just been through a couple of crazy years. The economy has been tough and it has really made living local more important than ever. I am optimistic that 2014 will be a year of new positive changes, a growing economy and most importantly, a new way of looking at what we want Modesto and the surrounding area to be. You realize that Modesto is US, WE are the change. What we do, where we go, where we eat and drink, where we shop and where we spend our hard earned dollars and our even more valuable time really makes a difference. This year was exciting, we took our place as the Birthplace of Rockabilly Music and celebrated the living legend KC “Don Juan” Maddox. We honored our native son George Lucas and thanked him for creating American Graffiti and so much more (like this little thing called Star Wars). We gather for MoBand, fundraisers and community activities. We sometimes mourn those we lost, like Ramona Hansen-Saben of Salty’s Records and Peter Mah of Minnie’s. These are our friends, and they are a part of who we are. This month, we ask what you want Modesto to be and we take some time to talk to Mitch Maisetti, who was so instrumental in bringing downtown Modesto back to life in 1994. We look back and we look forward with our classic American City optimism and want you to be a part of it. Modesto is what you make it. So forget resolutions, we want your real ideas on how to make Modesto great. What do you think our goals should be? It is up to us. Politicians and civic bureaucrats are hopelessly inefficient without pressure and ideas from the community. Are we the city of car theft or are we the home of American Graffiti drawing tourists and visitors from around the world? Are we the city of meth or are we the birthplace of Rock and Roll and Rockabilly? Are we the city of unemployment or are we investing in our downtown, rejuvenating 10th St and our core so that we attract new creative businesses? There are so many cities that have left their downtown to die, and the city crumbles. One thing we know for sure is that cities with energetic downtowns, vibrant art and music scenes, local 5-star dining are the places where jobs are created and where economy thrives. We need to get just a few of the 100,000 cars that drive through Modesto every day to pull off the freeway, spend some time and money and we need to tell the world what we are. This is really easy, we just have to want it. Even Ceres and Merced have signs on the freeway encouraging people to visit. Why don’t we? We have so much history and we need places that can show it off and welcome people from near and far. My 2014 community goal is that we have a bold vision and execute it. We know what to do. We know who and what we can be. We know the possibilities. We don’t need another study, or visioning. In the words of Nike, we need to JUST DO IT. Ok, let’s go. Happy New Year. Chris Murphy

Well this is it folks – The last FamousView column that I will write in 2013. The year has been interesting but more than that it was fast. I sit here and think about all the good things that happened throughout the year and I am happy but I will miss some of the people that left my life or that touched me in one way or another as we crossed paths along the way. This edition of my column is not meant to be sad. It is meant as a goodbye to one year and a hello to another. I have so much to be grateful for and that good fortune will carry over to 2014 in several ways. I am healthy and that is a big deal for me. I have survived for five years after a liver transplant and there has been no sign of Cancer returning to my body. I have to live differently than some folks with more frequent naps and rests but that is fine by me. Every day is a gift and every day is a blessing. The hardest part of going from one year to the next is always watching my daughters age. My oldest will be an adult in 2014 and that scares the heck out of me. How can she be ready for that when she still can’t seem to wash her dishes or finish all of her homework? Maybe she is more ready than I know. Maybe I just want to see her as a baby in my arms forever. One day she will be married. One day she will have children of her own. I will cry like a baby on those days but those tears will be happy tears – tears of strength and hope. As far as the ModestoView goes, we are really stepping up to the plate ready to fight for our voice in 2014. Our social media following is growing every day and we are becoming more and more recognized in the community. The best part of our growth is that it is built on a foundation of positive words followed up by positive actions. For instance, we love local music and we know that we need more of it to enjoy in our city so we will be promoting more shows than ever before this year. That is a promise. Personally I want to step out of my comfort zone behind the keyboard more this year

Hopes & Dreams....

and try new things. I want to work closer with my team and help to create more multimedia projects. Video is an awesome platform that we are all itching to get more involved in. We tell you how much we love Modesto. It is time to show you. I will make an effort to be more balanced and happy this year. I will get off the couch more and exercise more. I will hold my beautiful girlfriend as close as I can and embrace my daughters as much as I can. I will cherish every day like it is the gift that it is. I am ready for 2014 and I am proud and honored to embark on another year

of promoting the good people in the best little farm town in the world. Thank you for reading my words and for all of the encouragement and good will that you have shown to my family and I. I fully believe that I would not be alive if I lived anywhere but Modesto. That means the world to me. Thank you. ART Bring on the New Year Resolutions by Jim Christiansen Jim Christiansen Sharpie art on display at the Barkin’ Dog and other Jim C art

Going into 2014, I find I am in my seventh year writing on Art in Modesto View, give or take our print hiatus. At the end of this past year, I find more people recognize me on the street or at events, from the photo usually on page seven, and the art I’ve got up around town. My photo is still posted in large format on Tenth Street. People ask me to add them to the Tresetti’s sharpie bar mural. The Barkin’ Dog hallway gallery is getting noticed and more people visit my Tuesday 2 to 5 docent shift at Mistlin Gallery. Crow Trading’s display of my work in the window has really generated the comments, and that keeps me in the Modesto public eye at least, and the column helps me let others know of my artist friends in the area, and the events we have in the Modesto Art Scene. January brings on the New Year Resolutions, and mine is to work out an out of town solo show in October for my birthday. In order to get to that, I first have to clean out the garage artwork area and be ready for Open Studio coming up in April,

and get several columns done for Modesto View. After that, it is work on the signs and set up for the Riverdance Farms Pick and Gather Festival May 31 and June 1. Then I take the summer to frame what parts of the portfolio I plan to show in the Fall. Would be nice to add a trip to Boston and East Coast to visit my brother the Grandmaster chess player, and see where some of my art and cartoons hang outside Modesto. The first thing for Art in my New Year, is hanging out with friends in art and music here in town. Acoustic Rock Society sets up shop at the Center Stage Conservatory Lower Level Studio Art and Music show. Doors open at 6 pm, music starts at 7 pm. Featured Visual Artists, Jen Coffey, Mark Holden, Nadine Barret, Kristy Tribuzio and Jim Christiansen. Featured musicians: The Dust Bowl Children, Tony Trevino and Stage Coach Drifters, The Old Refrain, and featuring Tiffany Rose. All Ages show. After that is the Third Thursday Art Walk, January 16. This event happens every month, so come on downtown and check it out. The Art Walk is Free, All-ages and each venue changes up their show of local art each month. www.modestoartwalk. com The Mistlin Gallery will be closed for renovations until January 20, and will reopen with the Art in the Family show.

BAR New Year, New Bar: The Tap Room By Kate Serpa Photos by Philip Johnson

You see, my problem with New Years is the whole bit about resolutions. Around the 1st, people expect us to have some life-affirming statement as to what we’re planning on changing to better ourselves for the upcoming year. When someone asks you what your New Years resolution is, they are essentially asking what it is you hate the most about yourself; be it the extra 20 pounds, the cigarettes, drinking before noon, stealing quarters from public fountains -- you know, the universal issues. Here’s the thing though, dear reader: your New Years resolution (just like your tombstone inscription) does not, in fact, have to be factual. You can make it all up! Just picture: “Why yes, (insert name here), for 2014 I’m resolving to finally stop mailing Johnny Depp locks of my hair.” Trust me, it’ll be fun. All this being said, MY 2014 resolution (since you asked) is to try to be more honest. I have a big problem with little lies that tend to get me in trouble. For example, I hate Bloody Marys -- all of them; even the one that you make that is ‘way better’ because you use bacon salt or whatever. I hate them, I lie about hating them, I end up drinking them, and then I’m miserable. I also steal olives from the bar caddy. Hooray honesty! I’m feeling better already! And without further ado, here goes an honest article: The Tap Room is nowhere near any bar circuit -- actually it’s nowhere near much, but that’s the beauty of it. When Phil and I pulled up on a Wednesday night, the entire place was (not exaggerating) wall-to-wall packed -- on a Wednesday… for no reason. The Tap Room is obviously working some

8

sort of beer magic. Now a full bar is usually a turn-off for me; I like having my own space and a bit of face time with the bartender because I’m needy like that, but as Phil and I are standing at the packed bar, getting in the way of many beer tray-toting waitresses, the energy got a bit infectious. Phil started snapping photos of other patrons’ plates full of Chef Chow’s chicken and waffles, Cajun gumbo, deep-fried mac & cheese squares with bacon jam, Thai tacos, and heaping plates of fresh oysters (!), while I enjoyed a pint of Dust Bowl and looked over a faultless tap list. Tap Room’s beer list was like listening to a favorite playlist -- every new bit made the whole progressively better. Firestone, Snowweizen, Anchor Steam, Langunitas, Dust Bowl, Arrogant Bastard, and 21st Amendment were my highlights of the 20 rotating taps offered. Obviously, beer is not the only option; wine

Hopes & Dreams....

and spirits also flow aplenty. I enjoyed one of the more unique cocktails in my life -the Ellis Island, consisting of Jameson and straight pickle juice. My new go-to drink? Most probably not, but was actually -- dare I say -- good? So the Tap Room, owned and operated locally by Randy Rocha and Nathan Wilson, has only been open for under two months. The natural initial reaction is -- eh, no wonder they’re packed, it’s the honeymoon period. Normally I would be inclined to agree with you, reader, but I really do believe the Tap Room has real staying power. Tap Room’s Chef Chow is delivering fantastic bites and fresh oysters (I love oysters so damn much, people), I thought the beer selection was great, patrons seemed they had already been coming for years and eas-

ily struck up conversations with Phil and I -- and with a big photo of the Modesto Arch on the main wall, it appears to me as though Tap Room is gearing up to be an exceptional addition to local dining and drinking. Good times were honestly had. So I guess I have two resolutions: 1) Frequenting Modesto’s newest bar for the new year 2) Severing all postal ties with Johnny….wait, I mean being more honest. Yes, honesty. Happy 2014! The Tap Room Pub & Grub 3948 Sylvan Ave, Modesto, CA www.facebook.com/theTapRoomPubandGrub

Happy New Year to all my Modesto View faithful readers! I hope your season was merry and bright! There were many local productions last month. Were you able to attend one or two? I had a joyous time playing Mother Ginger on Dec. 15 with the Central West Ballet’s annual Nutcracker! It was so much fun to see what happens backstage! I embraced every moment! The dancers, the music, the costumes and the sets were glorious! My grandson, Glen who is four and a half, relished every minute! It was his first time seeing The Nutcracker! How lucky we are to live in a city that supports dance, opera, music, drama, poetry and art! We are the lucky ones! Rehearsals have started for Lakewood Youth Theater’s musical Totally Awesome 80’s! It is a joy to collaborate with young performers! Our shows will be March 7 at 6:30 PM and March 8 at 1:30 PM and 6:30 PM. Save the date and come to a performance! After 13 seasons and 65 successful and amazing productions, Prospect Theater Project is moving downtown on K Street. They will be showcasing their new home with Next Fall by Geoffrey Nauffts in February.

CHEF

FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: See Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month

Dana~licious’ Word of Mouth! by Dana Johnson

! r a e Y w e N y Happ Happy, Hungry, and Healthy New Year to all of the Modesto Viewers that give me reason to think about getting a gym membership or at least find an outlet to plug in my dusty treadmill sitting in my garage! Seriously Mo Viewers, I do all this decadent dining all year round just for you! “Word of mouth!” Isn’t that one of the best ways to find out about where the best of the best is when it comes to local dining and amazing cuisine in Modesto and its surrounding areas? Let’s review 2013… January- Olas Mexicali Grill, starting the year of right with mega fresh and healthier choices like the bare-naked bikini burrito and the lard-free menu items featured at Olas Mexicali Grill in McHenry Village. February- Barkin Dog Grill, where live music lives via local musicians while scarfing down a fat-stacked burger followed by a rich and thick milkshake with my flavor of choice, chocolate! (Next to a tasty basket of fries, of course!) March Skewers, succulent meats on a stick, I can’t ask for much more than that! But then there’s the lightest-fluffiest rice that’s like no other I’ve ever enjoyed, followed by baklava that can’t seem to get enough of! April- Redwood Café, ultra fine, wine and dine! Lollipop lamb chops and this crazy super juicy pork chop that has my mouth drooling just thinking about it! Plus flight nights and romantic ambiance under the

10

Modesto stars on their patio graced with gorgeous redwood trees. Perfect setting as they really know how to do up a wedding! May- Safari on salads as my waistline needing a break! Vito’s has hands down the best Waldorf salad ever, Mediterranean Grill has an extremely popular salmon salad full of flavor, and Greens table has array of organic salads that it becomes very difficult to pick just one! June- A&W and Sno-White Drive-in… I got my American Graffiti on as I sampled on the long time classics from the menus that have timeless nostalgia. Each bite can hold a favorite memory of back in the day. Plus, I introduced another place in time from my youth by re-experiencing the moments/bites with my own kids! July- Oodles and Loard’s Ice Cream, What a cool thrill to build my own frozen yogurt dessert (or breakfast, lunch, or dinner… don’t judge me!!!) with countless combinations of mix-ins and/or toppings at Ooodles. Scoop after scoop at Loard’s Ice Cream I found myself convinced I had room for one more! Haha that’s a true story as each rich and dreamy-creamy flavor had a personal message just for me! Aug- Chopping Block, what an incredible find as this butcher shop and deli that

Hopes & Dreams....

boasts meat and yes my favorite more meat! Fine cuts of beef, pork, chicken, and many original handmade sausages great for grilling all year round. I also like the local specialty grocery products they carry in store that I no longer have to search for. Sept- Deva Café, what a thrill to have breakfast with Earl Matthews of the Poorhouse Millionaires Band! The band performs live on Sunday mornings to smooth me right into a relaxing afternoon while devouring Deva Café’s incredible crepes and homemade baked goods accompanied with aromatic coffee specialty drinks (Yes! I had champagne too!) Oct - Oakdale Cheese, what more did I need to say after CHEESE?! Picnic area, live animals to feed, specialty food shopping and cheese galore! Flavored goudas, quark cheese, and yes cheesecake! And then there is the best chocolate truffle I’ve tried thus far in my quest to find the best! Nov- Rockin B’s, WOW! Every bite, every burger, every time is the rightful claim to fame of the Fantastic burger stop! Handmade juicy patties, not greasy, make their burgers dang near to die for! The garlic fries are the perfect component to transport you to Shimmerville, you have to go there to know what that means!

My adventures through out the valley and Modesto have taken me to great spots that are new to the city or new to me. Each time I get to be a part of one of these adventures I will give you a view of it. Next to media my other passion is sports and Modesto has been blessed to have a top-notch soccer complex in the west coast. Opened this past summer, it is not only feeding the needs of the thousands of soccer players in the valley but teams of all ages from all over California have already

taken to the fresh turf. The complex has it all. More than 10 felids, snack bar, soccer vendors during tournaments and it’s open to the public to rent. I’ve been a sports fan all my life. Football, baseball, basketball, etc. As for Soccer, I didn’t play until I was in high school and caught the bug and after playing for Hilmar high I thought I would be done. Then at 21, I started at Modesto JC. I took a soccer class, where we just played soccer for about 90 minutes. I had the bug again then

played for Modesto JC, but then wrapped it up. I do play indoor soccer now, yet nothing compares to playing on a full field, with a full team, out in the elements. When I heard the soccer complex started an adult league I jumped all over that. I found a team with a few friends from the old days with the Modesto JC team and it has been a blast. I’m not great yet, but I’m working hard and having a fun. Make your next adventure a soccer adventure and find

a team to play on, or if your friends play, go out and cheer. Play hard and have fun. More info on the Complex Mary Grogan Park 3601 Litt Road, Modesto, next to Enoch’s High School. http://www.mysa-ajax.org www.AlanSanchez.Net www.facebook.com/TeamAlan Twitter @AlanSanchez alansancheztv@gmail.com

INTER Mitch Maisetti

by Chris Murphy

Downtown Modesto used to be the hub of everything in Stanislaus County. Highway 99 went right down 9th St and then in the 1960s, the freeway went in diverting thousands of cars. Then in the late 70s, Vintage Faire mall was built and commerce in downtown evaporated. The grand dame hotels Hughson and Covell were closed and the Strand burned. This could have been the end of the story like it is in so many midsized cities. But in the early 90’s Mitch and Tammy Maisetti along with Paul Tremayne created Tresetti World Café. This would set the stage for the return of fine dining to downtown Modesto. At the same time, the State Theatre was reopening and this leap of faith lead the renaissance of downtown Modesto. Mitch, Tammy and Paul are still leading the charge for a vibrant downtown today. Many people know Mitch and have been standing strong with him as he battles cancer, but many don’t know his history and views on Modesto. Let’s get to know Mitch. MV: Where did you grow up and where did you meet Tammy? MM: I grew up in Patterson and went to Patterson High School, just like my father did. I had a great small-town childhood and was raised in the country as well as the city. When I turned 20, I started bartending for weddings and Mexican quinceañeras. After I turned 21, I worked for the Wong Brothers at the Frontier Club; I worked for $30 a shift and became manager after two years. The Frontier had a wide selection of diverse customers. In the daytime most of our guests were older, ‘salt of the earth’ working people; but when nighttime came all hell would break loose and our bar crowd turned young and brash -- great place to cut my teeth in the bar business. Hank Wong taught me almost everything I know about the bar business and how to succeed, and to him I am grateful. When I turned 27, I became restless and began looking for new ventures. It was at this time I bought the Tiki and left Patterson for good. The Tiki quickly turned into my home and is also where I met the love

a mutual love for New Orleans for its culture, weather, and of course, amazing food. NOLA Food is true comfort food and has almost always used local, homegrown ingredients. We live in California, where so much of the world’s agriculture is grown, and we should really be taking a page from their book. That’s where the local farmers come in. New Orleans has been doing the local thing for many years with its farmers and fishermen. Simple, great food -- we love it! MV: What is your very favorite thing in the world to eat? MM: I don’t necessarily have one favorite food, but I can honestly say I love red meat and cheese. I had a great night in downtown Modesto last week at Camp 4 where I had an amazing salmon and cheese platter. If I had one last meal, that just might be the one. MV: You and Tammy are such go getters and are so very quick to volunteer and make a difference, what drives you to support the community like you do. MM: Volunteering is essential for the restaurant business in downtown Modesto. We ‘small guys’ are truly at war with the corporate houses that lie, cheat, and steal our customers. The big guys spend millions trying to make our customers think that they are like us. Their marketing strategy is to make you think you’re getting local food and local service. I think there is no way to duplicate what Marcus and Charlene do at Harvest Moon, or the job Brad does at Skewers, not to mention the long hours Hannibal spends at Barking Dog taking care of every aspect of his business, yet you still see people waiting in line at chain restaurants to be fed boiled-in-the-bag pasta that might not even be made in this county, or country.

When we get our message across, there’s no way a person would pick corporate over local -- not to mention where the money goes. I don’t think everyone realizes how much non-profit help our local restaurants provide to this community, and that is why Tammy and I always quick to volunteer. MV: There is a new generation of Maisetti coming in to the business, how does it feel to be able have the next generation step up and lead? MM: In the last couple of years my sons, Jordan and Jaxon, have become more of an integral part of our business. They are still very young, but they have the game in their blood! Our niece, Christina, has been with us for over ten years at Tresetti’s and is a very important part of our house. No matter how important the children are to our business, it has always been apparent to them that we want them to choose what they do, not that it chooses them. The three of them are not allowed to work at Tresetti’s unless they are in school. Their choices in life have to be ones they want and not what’s forced upon them. MV: Downtown Modesto is in flux right now and needs a shot in the arm. What do we need to do to bring it back to life? MM: Downtown Modesto needs a shot in the arm right now. Most of our problems now seem to be economical; large corporation restaurants do not face the same scrutiny by the local law enforcement and governmental regulations as local businesses suffer. These corporate restaurants get a free pass from the city constantly. One example: I have to have a security member with a white shirt which must display “Security” clearly written in block letters on the back of their shirt in order to allow a acoustic performer -- who usually plays for about ten people -- to play a set. Meanwhile, Applebee’s has a ‘club night’ with more than a hundred people and no security and, more importantly, no police parked in the parking lot looking for an excuse to make a DUI arrest. Have you ever seen Highway Patrol circle the parking lot at BJ’s in the mall to ‘keep the peace’? Tell me how many times has that happened in downtown Modesto. Why is the focus on downtown? Maybe that’s the shot in the arm I’m looking for: equal enforcement.

Mitch and Tammy with Mike and Kim Callizo at the Tiki Anniversary party

Mitch Maisetti with Paul Tremayne MV: If you were king of downtown for a day, what would you do? MM: King for a day? Well, I already feel like I’m the king of downtown! Don’t get me wrong; I’m not the only one. I believe any local business owner is a king -- when we have the great customer base that downtown has and when our customers actively care about how our business is doing -how could we all not feel like kings? MV: ModestoView is all about living local, why do you think supporting our locally owned business are so important? MM: Local is what it’s all about. I believe Modesto citizens would buy more local if they completely understood all of the ramifications of their actions. When you buy local, all the money spent stays here! When you get brunch from Joey at the Fruit Yard or John at Surla’s, you’re getting a better product, and then they in turn donate to your kid’s football or water polo team. Keep the money in Modesto! MV: What advice would you give to someone that wanted to open a new business downtown? MM: Opening a new business in downtown can be incredibly difficult, but we need new business! Look at some of the successful people in the field you’ve chosen and try to emulate what they do. Susan at Bonnie J has been very successful at retail in downtown. I know it has been an up-

For more Modesto info: www.modestoview.com

hill battle for her, but with brains and hard work she’s triumphed. We need about ten more Susans in Modesto! Talk about a shot in the arm! MV: What do you think about making it a priority to have live music in downtown? MM: Music in downtown Modesto is the magic that makes our community’s wheels go round. We already have the fantastic Gallo Center that provides us with talent no one could bring to smaller clubs (thanks, Lynn Dickerson!), and we should all continue to support and promote local talent for both the performers and the local venues. We could all do better! Check out what great shows Sue at the State Theatre is bringing in for the month, or who is playing at the Queen Bean this weekend. When we all work together, we are much stronger than any corporate house.

MV: If you could visit any place in the world, where would you go? MM. If I could visit only one place, I think I would go back to Zurich and stay in the small hotel Tammy and I stayed in about ten years ago. One night, we were in bed around midnight and decided to throw open the windows. It was very cold, but we had a huge down blanket on our bed. Lying there with church bells ringing with my wonderful wife is about as close to heaven as I can imagine. MV: Describe your perfect Modesto day? MM: I live my perfect day on a regular basis. I get up late, make it to Tresetti’s about noon for lunch, meet up with the family, and take care of business for the rest of the day. My afternoon is usually spent trying to figure out where to have dinner -- always local! Then it’s home, a little TV with the family, and off to bed. You really can’t beat that! MV: Beatles or Stones? MM: Beatles all the way! How could four guys change this world anymore than they did, and continue, to do?

art of one kind or another has been popular since ancient times. Statues, monuments, murals, and landscaping are examples familiar to everyone. There are thousands of pieces of public art in United States including the State of Liberty, the Washington Monument, the St. Louis Gateway Arch, the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park, the neon of Las Vegas, the Sundial Bridge in Redding, Seattle’s Space Needle, and the Modesto Arch. Outdoor or publically displayed art is expensive and not necessary to the continued existence of these cities or any city, but every one of these cities would be significantly diminished without it. Publicly displayed art that is well done and well selected has benefits that are not immediately tangible but still important; it can memorialize, provoke, educate, inspire, entertain, and delight. It can beautify the appearance of a building or a street and help create pleasing urban design. A work of art can even provide an identity for a city and at the same time celebrate its cultural and historic heritage. There are people in Modesto working to bring more publicly displayed works of art into our city. Most noteworthy is the work of Classic Community Murals and Murals in Motown. They have facilitated the completion of several murals including some in the design district. In 2012, the community restored our famous arch, and the Modesto Art Museum, using funds provided by Artplace America, is working with the city on a public art project that will be completed this year. Besides the intangible benefits listed above, good public art also has serious financial benefits for a city. People travel and spend money to see works of art. Perhaps no one is more surprised by the connection between art and its financial benefits then the people of Redding where people come in large numbers to see their art bridge. A second serious financial benefit is that public

art attracts new businesses. Art alone won’t bring new companies to Modesto, but it is part of the mix that corporations look at when profiling a city and deciding on new facilities. When it is done well, public art is a worthy investment. To see an interactive map of publicly dis-

ROCKABILLY

Darlin’ Clementine

by Jennifer Allsup

Three bands you should check out in 2014, Lets’ start with our local Rockabilly band “Darlin Clementine”. Tess Body had a moment in her crazy music world to chat with me about their exciting news for 2014. Darlin’ Clementine started out as Tess and Devon Boyd doing an open mic at The Cow Track. Tess wrangled Devon into doing it, but afterward, people were asking where they were playing next. It sorta got out of hand from there; adding Lance Martinez on bass and Steve Manson on drums and, in time, creating the sound that has set them apart from other local acts. In a short time since, they’ve made a name for themselves kicking around.. Recently, they signed on with Northern California-based, and nationally known, Hi-Ho Silver Records. The Boyds have been friends with Rick Torres (of Rockin’ Rick and the Rhythm Wranglers and cofounder of Hi-Ho Silver Records) for a few years and the timing couldn’t have been better to sign with them. Hi-Ho Silver has just joined forces with London and Berlin-based label, Rhythm Bomb Records, a move that will take many of their artists over-seas. Recording has already begun for Darlin’ Clementine’s freshman release on Hi-Ho Silver and new music is being written to continue the forward momentum of the group. Release date TBA. A tour is planned following the release to promote the album and generally spread the gospel of Clementine. It’s a must see show, a three piece band, that loves Rockabilly along with punk and Surf. These three gentlemen decided to mix the genres together. ”The Chop Tops” Santa Cruz based Sinner (vocal & stand up drummer), Shelby (Lead Guitar) and Brett(Stand Up Bass) are no strangers to playing Modesto and aboard. The Chop Tops have headlined their own National tours and have open for many greats such as John Lee Hooker and Chuck Berry. Performing large music festivals as well “Vans Warp Tour” and “Viva Las Vegas” to add under their belts. I suggest you wander yourself up to

Great pizza and a

Jamestown on Jan 11 at the “Gypsy Shack” and see what you might have been missing. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Let’s switch it up a bit. Adding a little American Punk Rock to our souls. Guttermouth. Yes, the name serves them well. Since 1988 when Mark Adkins started the band in Huntington Beach, Ca. Guttermouth has no slack when it becomes to releasing records. They have released nine full length albums and two live albums since 1988. Touring around the states. As for many bands Guttermouth has also had the experience of playing “Vans Warp Tour”in 2004. I remember in the past year when “Guttermouth” opened for “Reverend Horton Heat” in Modesto. Their stage presence was off the charts and had the crowd jumpin & slammin’ the dance floor. If American Punk Rock is your thing, I suggest you check them out on Jan 30th at The Brewhouse/Hero’s along with local support of ICK three young talented men showing they can strut their stuff as well. Also on the bill for the night are PinATA PROTEST and Trashboat. Super excited to watch the shenanigans on stage that night. All ages starts at 7pm $12 in advance/$15 at the door or purchase on-line at brownpapertickets.com Not only should you support local and traveling musicians. Support local artist that have another trade that fit the music scene in Modesto and beyond. I know of two local artist trying to do their part and share what’s most important to them….art! for painting our Rockin’ Christmas facades! Art programs continue to disappear and specialty art programs are becoming less accessible to these that can’t afford tuitions, fees, or even art supplies. The AYNIA project hope to produce a beautiful collection of the kid’s art, class photos, personal travel photos, sketches, funny stories and interviews with established artists on what motivated and inspired them to follow their path and eventually become successful in their field. They will not only visit youth facilities, group homes and after school programs during their travels, but also hold local workshops to share knowledge and hopefully spark a creative fire that continues to burn throughout their adult lives. Brook and David will work with kids talking about different techniques, color theory, as well as the creative process. They will provide art supplies to keep, some of their own reference materials and mostly, a lasting desire to continue on an artistic path. The first class was held a couple weeks and was a huge success!! Please go and find more information and ways to donate or contribute on their blog: Allyouneedisartproject.com they’re going to be using this blog throughout, their travels to keep you updated with any new info, classes and photos. Although their Kickstarter did not successfully fund, they raised enough money to apply for a Non Profit and move forward with hope. BIG

by Chris Murphy

T

his is that time of year when we reflect on last year and what we want to do differently this year. I think that as the Chinese will be celebrating the year of the Horse, Modesto should be celebrating the year of community. This is where we truly work to connect the dots to make our community better. There are so many giving and talented people here in town and if we all focus our energy on some key things, we can truly make a difference. ModestoView talks about Downtown Modesto a lot and there is a really good reason. Cities with healthy, vibrant and active downtowns are better community wide. There is a sense of family and connection that we share, when we all get together and see what our city can be. ModestoView is all about you, our amazing readers, community leaders and writers and we asked two simple questions as we try to find where our hopes and dreams connect. We can truly make Modesto a better community if we all work together. Thanks for all of our dedicated readers and writers as you are the glue that will help our community stick together. Post your hopes and dreams at www.facebook.com/modestoview and www.modestoview.com

Kate Trompetter, Center for Human Services

Personal Dream/Goal: In 2014 I want to continue to find more time for things that create physical health and emotional well being. I want more balance, more time with my family, more time to be creative, to read, to cook and exercise. I’m going to make it a great year. Hope: My hope for Modesto is two-part. Let’s continue to celebrate Modesto and celebrate each other. Also, I hope the generosity of spirit I’ve seen in people during the last couple months never goes away. People need people all year round.

Mary Layton

Modesto street music. Modesto street arts and crafts. Like on Telegraph ave. in Berkeley. Safe outside places for people to gather to hang out and have fun, socialize. I wish I could go to one of those big barns and learn basket weaving. Doing large creative projects on a volunteer basis Having outside dances like in the good old days Wish there was a spring festival so we don’t have to sweat so much.. Wish we had better air. Wished we had better public transportation, an airporter bus at least.

Jim Christiansen

I am hoping to do a showing of my art out of town this year. And I want the State Theatre, Prospect Theater Project and Center Stage Conservatory and Art Walk to prosper.

Lynn Dickerson

My personal goal is for my son to finish his education and find meaningful and fulfilling work that brings him joy and satisfaction My community hope is for continued economic rebound, good jobs for our citizens and a beautiful, thriving downtown Modesto ( with the Gallo Center in the middle of it!)

Hopes & Dreams....

Our hope for 2014 is that we all continue in the best of health and that all of our local talented artist dreams come true. We love you all.

John Black

This year I’m going to be careful not to let my ego outpace my intentions. Wise man once said: The higher up the ladder the baboon goes, the more his rear end will show. I hope that downtown Modesto becomes an even better place to operate businesses, where folks come and bring their families to shop, dine and experience the arts. That we continue to work towards this goal and maybe together with all the king’s horses and all the king’s men we can finds way put our least understood citizens back together again. Patterson age 71/2 I dream that one day I will go to a good college and learn a lot of things so that I can help other children. I hope for our community that people get better at helping each other and being nice to each other so that we can have a stronger community in Patterson.

Taylor Salsman,

,

Jessica Moilanen

I have a lot to look forward to in 2014. I recently graduated from CSU Stanislaus, so in 2014, my personal dream is to attend graduate school, possibly in Southern California, or back East. I will also embrace the opportunities that come my way and will not let fear or uncertainty step in my way. For my community, I want to see unity. I want people to set aside their differences and support each other throughout the community in any way that is needed.

Jeff Cipriano

Personal Dream- Is to have Jaunt Adventure Gear become a thriving business where our community could get their outdoor needs met. Hopes for the community - Is to see our community take pride in where we live. To take back our parks, so our families can feel safe. And make our local rivers a place where our community could go for recreation.

Cecil Russell,

CEO Modesto Chamber of Commerce Personal Goal: My personal goal is to develop and open a Graffiti Museum that will showcase our city’s heritage and be a catalyst for reinvigorating our downtown. lead the Chamber and its volunteer resources in a way that will enable us to partner with the City of Modesto to find solutions to help the city regain control of its finances so that our citizens can receive the services that a vibrant city, like Modesto, should provide. My hope for the community is that the City of Modesto regain control of its finances so that our citizens can receive the services that a vibrant city, like Modesto, should provide. I hope that the City will partner with community organizations, like the Modesto Chamber, on issues like ways to balance the city’s budget so that all of our collective resources can work together to find solutions that will benefit the entire community.

Josh Bridegroom, Modesto Planning Department

My goal: When Modesto View asked me to come up with a personal hope or dream for 2014 and a hope or dream for the community in 2014, I realized that these are one and the same: I want to be a part of making downtown Modesto the most amazing place it can be! Over the course of the last two years, I’ve been collaborating with a broad cross-section of the community to develop a program to do just that. I believe that any limitation is self-imposed; there is no limit to what can be accomplished when we work together!!

Ellen Burchett

Personal Dream - I hope that 2014 sees me branching out in my volunteering, whether it is personally lifting up people I know or giving to the community at large. With a pregnancy and now two small kids, 2013 saw me focused on myself and my family, and I am hoping to re-broaden my view for 2014. Hope for the Community - I hope that 2014 sees Modesto focused on positive change in our community. Each time that someone posts a positive Facebook status or picks up a piece of trash, tells a friend about a new show or retweets a positive message about Modesto, we collectively change our attitude for the better. The more positive energy / words we put out there, the more positively people act.

Kaye Osborn

My hope for our community is that more people learn American Sign Language and provide qualified interpreters for theatrical productions. My personal goal for 2014 is to embrace each day with smiles, kind words and exercise daily!

Earl Matthews

My goal for next year is to travel to as many states as possible, if I could hit the number 20, I would be thrilled. I would like to see live music in Modesto be more well known, both locally and nationally. Kind of a mission statement for me.

Marian Kaanon

I turn 40 in 2014, so it’s a big year for me. My personal goal is to continue nurturing the many amazing relationships in my life. As a mom, my main goal is to help my kids achieve their own goals: whether that’s acing a spelling test or mustering up the courage to swing off the monkey bars. My hope for the community in 2014 and beyond is that we continue collaborating and working together, even among setbacks, even when facing detractors or long odds. The spirit of collaboration is more important than ever before, as our challenges are increasingly complex and require many of us to come to the table and get to work.

Galen Carroll, Modesto Police Chief

My personal goal for 2014 is to be a better husband and friend. Too often I get wrapped up in the day to day living as well as shifting into work mode that I don’t let those closest to me know how much they mean to me. My hope for the community is the numerous community groups currently working on individual projects come together as one large voice and force for positive change in our city.

Kenni Friedman

Personal Goal: To be the preeminent Boys & Girls Club where we can showcase how we offer our youth an opportunity to reach their full potential. Community Hope: To gather community members to chart a plan for the future and to print the report in ModestoView, December 2014.

Kathy Molina

2014 is going to be a special year for me, since I will be turning 40. Since I am a Yankees fan, a personal dream is to be at the Yankees game, in New York City, on my birthday. My hope for the community is simple, more people smiling. Amazing things can happen when you smile.

Keith Boggs

Personal Goal: Atop my lengthy personal goals list for 2014 is to try and convince one of our local art galleries to allow me a small showing of my multi-medium art. It has been several years since I last showed my work and I am very proud of how it continues to evolve. I would hope that the City and County would continue to build upon our strong, open and inclusive working relationships through 2014. Each of us share so many common goals and our objectives remain intertwined on so many key issues. We can get there from here.

Dana Johnson

My personal hopes/dreams for Dana~licious in 2014: More air time on FOX40 News and fill my calendar with my growing business doing private in-home local cooking parties, book one today! Community goal for Dana~licious in 2014... continue to support local restaurants that rely on our patronage to keep their doors open and our mouths happy! In the words of my handicapped daughter Amanda “Happy New You!” Patterson, age 9 I dream that one day I will go to a good college and learn a lot of things so that I can help other children. I hope for our community that people get better at helping each other and being nice to each other so that we can have a stronger community in Patterson.

AUTHOR “About Time” by Ken White

“How did it get so late so soon? It’s night before it’s afternoon. December is here before it’s June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?” – Dr. Seuss

It’s about time. Slipping away. Being wasted. Running out. Standing still. Flying. Being lost. Filling, making, and killing it. Or, having enough of it. We worry about it being the last time, or the last time around. It’s always time to do this or that. We think about time zones, time outs, and real time; just in time or the nick of time or putting in time. We tell stories about once upon a time and share proverbs about a stitch in time. We fondly recall the first time and agonize over the only time. We try to take things one step at a time. We long for the time when time was on our side. Time and again, we talk about prime time, big time, me or my time, good time, nap time, in time, alone time, night time, hang time, Christmas time, every time, lost time, quiet time, any time, wintertime, sleepy time, strange time, short-time, parttime, all-time, the right and wrong time. We read Time Magazine or the New York Times, Of Time and the River or a Brief History of Time. We watch Time Warner or Lifetime. We nostalgically look back to the times of our life and hope we had the time of our life. We set our clocks to Greenwich Mean Time and Pacific Standard Time. From time to time, we ponder time management, which we’ll get around to when we have time, and time travel which inevitably requires a time machine. We try to imagine what having time on our hands or the end of time actually look like? We question if there is world enough and time. We sing “Time has come today,” “Time after

18

time,” “Time in a bottle,” and “By the time I get to Phoenix.” We often don’t have time to take our time. What came first, life or time? As one brainiac pointed out, if it weren’t for time, everything would happen all at once at the same time. And, finally, there comes a time when we discover that Father Time waits for no one. The older we get, the less there seems to be of it and the faster it goes. Something we thought took place two years ago was actually five. And we insist on rushing toward then without living in the now, this moment. Only to look back and wonder why we were in such a hurry for the arrival of tomorrow when today will soon enough be gone to yesterday. In the romantic comedy movie, About Time, a young man named Tim learns from his father that the men in their family have the ability to travel back in time. Not forward, just back, which provides our hero with the opportunity to change his past so he can have a better future. Near the end of the movie, Tim learns that his father has terminal cancer, which cannot be changed by time travel. When Tim reels back in time to visit his father the day before he is to be buried, his father counsels him to live each day twice. The first time to experience it in real time as it happens with all the stresses a “normal” person faces. And a second time, now knowing what to expect from the day, in order to savor each moment; embracing the day and enjoying it for exactly what it is. Like a good son, Tim follows his father’s advice. But, he soon realizes that it is a far, far better thing to live each day once and enjoy it as if it were his last. It has been said that yesterday’s the past, tomorrow’s the future, but today’s a gift and that’s why it’s called the present. As we start a New Year, this seems like an incredibly profound and valuable way to live each day.

ZEN The Year Of the Horse While we already had our New Year’s Eve party, the Chinese New Year is still coming. Following the lunar calendar it begins this year on January 31. The Chinese New Year is the most important holiday in China. Festivities can go on for 10 days, with lots of eating and drinking and lots of noise. They’ve got good firecrackers. A legend says that in ancient times, Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year. Twelve came (rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake , horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and boar) and Buddha named a year after each one. He declared that people born in the animals’

year would have some of the animal’s personality. The five elements (metal, water, wood, fire and earth) present at the time of birth also impact the person’s nature. 2014 is a Wood Horse year. Some say it will be a time for fast victories, high energy and unexpected adventure. Sounds like a nice year to me. Come celebrate the Year of the Horse with us ! BUSINESS Urbano Open for Business On

by Ruben J. Porras

the day after Christmas downtown diners received a belated gift in the way of a new dining space. Located on H Street in the space most recently occupied by Jax, Urbano offers patrons an open and airy feel clearly designed to bring a city vibe to the downtown scene. The eatery boasts vivid colors and blocky loft-style counters and doors and the walls are adorned with colorful modern art including images of San Francisco and London. Modern is definitely the theme throughout the space. According to owner, Noe Sanchez, the restaurant will be open for lunch until the later part of January when dinner will also be offered. Lunches will include pizza, gourmet sandwiches and robust salads among other choices. A full bar menu will also be offered. Modesto foodies won’t be unfamiliar with the menu or the type of food to expect

tion in so many ways. It is one of the most authentic and vintage Polynesian restaurants and bars anywhere. It has been a hangout for over 6 decades and it is the oldest restaurant in Modesto. It is family. Everyone that goes to Minnie’s feels like family. At the bar, in the restaurant, on the patio, people were greeted by co-owner Peter Mah. Pete was the front man and had a smile for everyone. I remember one night my band Third Party played there for 3.5 hours straight and we were just fueled with Jerks and Planters Punch and he told me what a great night he had at the bar and wanted to know when we could play again. As the inventor of one of Modesto’s most toxic cocktails, the Jerk, Pete hosted so many for traditional food, drink and a walk back in time to the age of vintage

Tiki. No one will forget the pot lucks, parties upstairs and on the patio and Pete will live on with so many in Modesto. My family have been regulars in the little room off of the bar and we felt like family every time thanks to Pete, Suzanna and the rest of the Minnie’s family. Make sure you stop by and say hi to the folks at Minnie’s, and have some pot stickers, sizzling rice soup, a drink, or two, or three, and tip one to Peter Mah. - Chris Murphy

BLUES & JAZZ Blue Monday’s back in town. by Eric Benson Well out with the old and in with the new, year that is. The hollidaze pass with feverish pitch with all the extracurricular affairs of friends and family and well wishers. Wow I need a nap right about now. Time to reflect on the resolutions and salutations to bring us into the next go round. Hoping that all of you survived the holidays with health and poise and that you got out of the mall alive. We had a Blue Monday reunion Christmas party in December with a packed house so while once a year is too long and every week is too often we are bringing back Blue Monday Party once a month in the downtown. Please come down Monday Jan 6th to the Barkin’ Dog Grill at 6:30 and hang with Ultra Lounge, Jam, listen, dance, or hoist a glass and enjoy!. We would love to have you help continue the tradition in the downtown. One highlight for December I went to was a private party at Urbano Restaurant, (formerly of Clayton’s/Jax Restaurant), in which Spencer Day played duo to a packed house with great food and beverage. Richard Mulholland hosted and the demographic was folks 40 yrs and up. The hope is to do more quality shows for us that shall we say are not going to the disco, and too young to be card-carrying AARP members. More shows to come at Urbano in the New Year. The State Theatre, home of the MAMA awards continues with some community friendly booking. Jan 24th John Corbett in concert comes through. The Gallo continues to amaze me with their booking: Yellowjackets, Three Dog Night, Blues Traveler, Straight no Chaser, wow! For January: 10th with Forever Tango, 11th Ricky Nelson Remembered. Another place for a quiet listen to music in ambient environment that is catching on is DEWZ Restaurant’s Wine Bar. The Saturday night music is from 7:30 to 10:00 or so and features solo and small groups of musicians playing at acoustic volumes in the informal environment with folks enjoys wine

URBAN

Masterpiece

by Tru Luv Lopez

Wake up to the sounds that played in your head moments before you open your eyes. The base, the tempo, the kick. This is it. No matter how you go about constructing your composition or shall I say, your music, grabbing the elements that play in your mind then relaying this sound to the keys on your board is only the beginning. Your gut feeling will only grow by adding the elements piece by piece. You’re a genius. It has become natural. Maybe you’re an inspiring up and coming rookie with passion. Ether way, you ask yourself, is this good enough to inspire the masses or just junk? Do I scrap it and start from scratch? My friend you’re only as good as you allow yourself to be. Giving up now is like allowing sound to travel with no end. Allow yourself to be as critical about your work as you would be

of that piece you heard the other day. Stop. Listen to it from a different perspective. Writing your song like your writing to the one person you admire. Love it. Embrace it. Imagine how many people will play this to drive an emotion. Bring joy or bring back memories. This is your body mind and soul. to perfection. This is truly yours and sharing this with the world is your drive. This is your masterpiece. January is a new year for some and just another year for others. Here are some of my hopes and dreams: Dreams are a film strip of ideas and emotions. Setting a goal is closer to realty than dreaming. One of my many goals is to provide you as a reader with more education, information and stories. My hope is for our community to be more aware of the violence and crime affecting our families. A Rumination Regarding Resonance by Aaron Rowan

Hopes & Dreams....

music is a fundamental force of the universe, on the same level as gravity and magnetism? Famed Russian pianist Sviatoslav Richter once gave a concert in Sofia, Bulgaria in the winter of 1958. A flu epidemic was raging during that time, and there was a great deal of coughing going on among the audience that night. But a recording of that recital reveals something interesting: there were passages of Richter’s performance during which the coughing fell silent. It is as though Richter had the power to suspend the physical symptoms of an entire theater full of people through his music. This intangible power may also extend beyond affecting the emotional (and physical?) tides within the human soul, and into the larger realm of nature. A few years ago I viewed a documentary exploring the relationship between music and the natural world. I do not usually go for documentary films, but this had me mesmerized from first frame to last. It’s called ‘The Reach Of Resonance,’ directed by musician and writer Steve Elkins. It follows four pioneers working in the fringes of the musical realm: -Bob Ostertag; creating a symphony using the movements of a street riot as a template, and exploring other social/political issues through the lens of music; -Jon Rose, inventor of unique musical instruments, traveling the globe playing barbed-wire fences with a violin bow; -Performance artist Miya Masaoka, using

music to interact with insects and plants; -and composer John Luther Adams, discovering the music-like structure hidden within the geophysical phenomena of Alaska (such as the Aurora Borealis.) The film has been screened and won awards across the globe. You can find more info and upcoming screenings at www.reachofresonance.com. I cannot recommend this highly enough - it will change the way you think about music forever. This year’s installment of the Modesto Unplugged Music Festival is seeking all those who wield the power of music to submit their original work in the Americana, bluegrass, folk, country, and related genres to our songwriting contest. For a $10 entry fee, singer-songwriters will have the chance to win a cash prize, and more. Five finalists will be invited to perform their songs as part of the closing night Festival showcase, and the top 3 as judged by a panel of accomplished songwriters will receive a share of the prize pool. The entry deadline is Saturday February 1. You can email modestounplugged@yahoo.com to get instruction on where to send your entry package and what to include. This songwriting competition will serve as a segue into the as-yet-unnamed women’s songwriting conference being spearheaded by our very own country-rock ambassador Patty Castillo Davis. This will be held a few weeks after MUMfest wraps, in late April or early May. It will be a whole day of memorable performances and workshops featuring noted songbirds from around California and beyond. More info in the coming months!

FIT Resolutions For Life by Efren Martinez

BEFORE

As the New Year is upon us, so are the many resolutions that go along with it. I admit, I too have been one of those people who start off the year with a New Years resolution. But like most, didn’t get the memo that it was supposed to last longer than two days. Regardless of this, there is one fellow out there who woke up one day and made a resolution to live a healthier lifestyle and has stuck with it. I’ve been friends with Frank Leguria for a few years now and I met him through the Shadowchase running club. Frank is an amazing person, friend and family man. Just recently I asked Frank to share how he lost so much weight with our Modesto View. At one time Frank weighed in at 300lbs and after a healthy amount of time, he was down to 183lbs. For Frank, the

AFTER phrase “healthy amount of time” sounded exactly what it felt like for him, “a long time.” It actually took him 18 months to lose the weight a healthy natural way in “a healthy amount of time”. He did it the right way. I asked Frank what had motivated him to lose the weight, was it a New Years resolution? In truth, no. He simply woke up one Sunday with a headache, stepped on the scale and noticed he was at 300 lbs. At that point, Frank knew he needed a lifestyle change and decided to join weight watchers. Frank was so ready and had the full support from his loving wife of 27 years, Sherry Leguria. Shortly after that he found himself walking into a weight watcher’s meeting with his wife by his side for support. He knew he needed help and Frank

wasn’t afraid to ask for it. In fact, he gathered his friends and family and joined in on their healthy lifestyle running clubs as well as another one of Frank’s proudest teams he belongs too, Team Challenge. Between the support of his family, the fitness teams and clubs he belong to, he discovered it to be much easier to apply the meal planning point system he was learning from weight watchers. Frank was on his way to losing the weight and kicking those blood pressure meds to the curb. So long potential heart disease. His doctor couldn’t be happier, and soon as he got the Ok from his physician, Frank went from struggling with walking 5 laps with a his fitness buddy 4 days a week to running 5ks. Today Frank is an inspirational man in fitness. His workouts are consistent and his accomplishments are many that would include 3 full marathons,16 half marathons, and more 5k’s than you can shake an Oreo cookie at. Make no mistake, Frank is no different from you or me. Like most of us he has fallen off the fitness wagon from time to time but it’s his determination and love for himself and his family that reminds him there is no other way to live from here on.

I asked Frank to share some advice to help all of us along our journey and here’s what he had to say. “The advice I would give would be to stay strong and have the mindset of understanding that not every day in your weight loss journey is going to be a good day or the day you have expected. Some weeks or months after working so hard your results might be depressing, but stay strong and NEVER GIVE UP! Edison failed at successfully creating the light bulb one thousand times, and never gave up trying. Instead he learned from his mistakes, and that is what a person struggling with weight loss needs to do. Learn from what has not been working and never give up. Some weeks are not your week, but most will be your week if your try hard and stay true to yourself.” Healthy Eating Tips - Stay away from finger foods. - Have a full glass of water prior to your meal and during. - Stay away from sugar loaded soft drinks and juices. - Eat your biggest meal in the morning and gradually decrease your portion size by dinnertime. - Enjoy more fruits and vegetables as a snack.

Happy 2014!

Chicago Art and County Trash by ‘Big’ Earl Matthews

This year will be filled with new and exciting things for you to do in the Modesto area. What’s your new year’s resolution? If yours is doing more for (and spending more time in) your community, then you have opened the right magazine. My new year’s resolution is to spend more time with my family and friends in the downtown Modesto area. Even if it’s just getting on a bike, skateboard, or in a car and going to your favorite restaurant. One of my favorite places to go downtown is The Barkin’ Dog Grill. I believe that they have the best milkshakes and fries in the area. Besides the great food, there is live music almost every other night. I am in my junior high choir, It is a tradition to go there for milkshakes after our performances. Recently I went with some choir, band, and orchestra friends. We listened to a band play Christmas tunes and we had a great time. I have also attended an open

mic poetry reading there and the writers were so gifted they inspired me to write more. Check out the Barkin’ Dog’s website www.barkindoggrill.org to see the dates for live music and to see the menu. I hope to see you there! I also love to go to the State Theatre to see movies, plays, and you can even rent it for a Birthday party. I went a while ago to see a professor talk about prehistoric times then we watched Jurassic Park for the first time. There was even a little dinosaur in the lobby that we took pictures with. I hope that you have a great month and make your way to The Barkin Dog and The State Theatre!

Hopes & Dreams....

Happy New Year everyone. I hope you are ready for a great year in local music. There is lots of great stuff on the horizon this year. Let’s start from at the beginning of this monthOn Jan 4th BEatCS will be back at the Torch Club. This is our first time heading up a Saturday night at this beloved Sacramento Blues joint. If you are looking for a good reason to get your after holiday ya ya’s out this is the place. On January 18th we are welcoming, all the way from Chicago, one man band Lou Shields. Lou is a Professor of Art at Prairie State College in Chicago. Lou’s art and his music reflect his love of American Roots and Blues music. He is on a national tour right now, driving, skating, playing and making art across America. While he is here we are doing two shows, one on the 18th at the Cow Track Lounge in Oakdale along with the Ryan Russell Band and again on the 19th at Rick’s Saloon in Knights Ferry along with Willy Tea and Tom V. Poorhouse Millionaires will be play both dates as well. This is a great chance to see a very unique act from a great music town. A little later in the month on Thursday Jan 30th we are welcoming Country Trash. Formerly from Sonora, CA now hailing from Oregon, Country Trash is coming to the Log Cabin in Turlock for a night of high-energy Americana music. Last but certainly not least, on friday January 31st, Mofo Party Band is celebrating 25 years as a band at the Brewhouse at Hero’s on 9th and L Streets here in Modesto. Mofo

is one of my favorite bands and has the distinction of being the only Fresno band to have ever won a MAMA award which was well deserved I might add. My band, Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame will open this show that night. This will be a night to remember so make sure you get your tickets ahead of time and come early so you can be sure to get a front row seat. I want to give a quick update about “My Friends and I”. We are going back into the studio starting this month to begin recording our second compilation. This CD will feature a whole new lineup of local bands. We are very proud to see the family grow and really looking forward to doing the good work of promoting local original music here in the Central Valley.
