EDITORS Greetings Modesto Friends!

Time is slippin’ slippin’ slippin’.. into the future.

Steve Miller sang it right when we think about how much is happening, and how fast the world is spinning these days. I am shaking my head thinking about how fast this last year blew by. Modesto friends, we did some cool stuff this year and I am so proud of our ViewCrew team. We created and launched the Modesto Walk of Fame in 10th St Place. Along with the Historic Cruise Route, we now have a really cool tourist attraction for our American Graffiti history. In December, we brought our retro Christmas Holidays back to downtown with Modesto Rockin’ Holiday complete with Rockin’ Santa, Rockin’ North Pole, Rockin’ Snow and more. These are the first new holiday decorations since the ‘70s. This was a huge team effort. Our new location on J St is bringing art, neon and music to our downtown core teaming with the Peer Recovery Gallery. Our ViewCrew writers not only write about what is happening in our community, but they are creating what is happening. They created The MAMA Awards, MUMFest, Thrashocalypse, Studio Art Tours, Women’s Music Festivals, Rockabilly Shows, Brew Ha Ha Comedy, Luckyfest, Summoning and so much more. That is what makes ModestoView so fun and so different. We are making things happen that change our community and for this I am so proud. Can’t wait to see what we are going to accomplish in 2015. I am excited for our future. I am excited for the things we can all do together. The economy is on the upswing, and we have new leadership at the City of Modesto with City Manager Jim Holgersson who believes in community teamwork. Our downtown is coming to life block by block and business by business. We are a city that loves music, good food, interesting culture and we can be a beacon for central California on creating

a great city to live and work. ModestoView is there for local business day in and day out. We are all about living local and celebrating the people that make good things happen. I like that and hope you do too. Most of all, I look forward to great times with my family in 2015. In so many ways, we all start over every single day when we wake up. What will we do? Who will we meet? What new direction can we go together? What traditions are important? How can we be more loving and caring people? I am excited to be a Father of the Bride in 2015 for Madison. I am excited to be a Father of a Cal Berkeley student for Abigail and I am so happy to be the husband of my talented wife Rebecca and look forward to so many new and creative experiences together I look forward to enjoying my Modesto friends and experiences and look forward to creating new ones and brining more crazy ideas like Rockin’ Holiday to life. Best to all of you, your businesses, your health and your families in 2015. Chris Murphy Founder and Publisher, ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

Rockin’ Thanks!

by Chris Murphy

We did it!

We created a new Modesto holiday tradition and brought back our past in a new fun Rockin’ format. We blended our American Graffiti History, our Rockabilly History and the nostalgia of days gone by, mixed it all up and added a dash of snow and created Modesto Rockin’ Holiday Hearing the screams as the snow started, the smiles on the faces of the kids and families when they were sitting with Rockin Santa, and the huge crowds of people after the parade and the Spirit of Giving run, made it all so exciting. Thank you to all that supported this crazy idea and now we have a new Modesto tradition that people are talking about all over the region. We are already excited about next season and what we can do to make it more spectacular. Thanks so much to my colleagues at Sierra Pacific and ModestoView for the support

to make this happen. Thanks Mark Haynes and Nick Crockett. The folks at Collins Electric are Rockin’ stars. Matt Paine, you are amazing and thanks Brian Gini for believing in downtown Modesto. Brian Friend of Laser Voodoo is a snow and laser genius. Legendary air-brush artist

Rockin Rick and the Rhythm Wranglers play in the the snow.

Tom Nye who brought Rockin’ North Pole to life. The City of Modesto team, lead by Andy Johnson was epic for making all the lights turn green for this project and the downtown businesses that rallied around it. Thanks Greg and Tyler at JCD for making me realize that this was all possible to create. Thanks to Jennifer and Mike Allsup, Rockin’ Santa Steve Waldron and our Rockin’ Elves and our local musicians of Modesto for bringing Santa and Rockin’ North Pole to life and creating so many memories. Thanks to the Modesto DID and the CVB for the endless support and Jeffrey for the art talent. Thanks to Saul at Brenden for the Rockin’ tunes and for allowing the Rockin’ 57 Sleigh to live in the lobby on off days and through Christmas. Again, thank you Modesto so very much for celebrating our history by making it part of our future. We have created something special. You can check out a lot of Rockin’ Holiday pics at www.facebook.com/rockinholiday Hope your Rockin’ Holidays were great and we wish you a Happy Rockin New Year! The Rockin Holiday Production Team. Hello 2015! It seems as though someone attached 2014 to one of those karts that buzzed all over downtown during the summer. Time just flew by! Now that a new year has arrived, let’s think about what will want to take part in this year. The basics such as Grafitti Summer, X-Fest, Modesto Marathon and the new Rockin’ Holiday promise to be bigger and better than ever before and there will no doubt be other great events that pop up throughout the year. I’m hoping for more family fun! It is always nice to see families really enjoying where they live. One thing that I am really excited about this year is the new Great Valley Museum and Planetarium on MJC’s West Campus. Yes, Modesto has a world-class learning and exploring venue and it is affordable to visit. Try to catch the planetarium during one of their evening tours. Telescopes atop the building offer long views of the valley

Don’t get stuck in 2014 in 2015. What I mean is, do something different. I always end up learning something new about myself when I step outside of my comfort zone. If you love miniature golf, try bowling. If you love working out at a gym, challenge yourself to an outdoor adventure. This is your chance to learn the inner workings of the entire experience while noshing on gourmet eats and rubbing elbows with the likes of famed scientists and local political stars. That website also links to event calendars and other important data. Geez - I just spent two paragraphs writing things that Leonard and Sheldon on Big Bang Theory would write. I get it now. Science is cool! When I’m not staring at preserved animals and planet models in 2015, I may take the time to feed my inner creative monster. I’ve played comedian a few times and it was fun, but I think I’d like to try acting or playwriting this year. Luckily, Modesto offers plenty of opportunity for rookies to

YEARS

Have you ever woken up in a stupor with a headache that feels like Willie Wonka’s Oompa Loompas have somehow managed to do their little song and dance inside your head? Hangover cures are something people all over the world have tried to figure out for as long as they have been partaking in spirits. It is said that ancient Romans deep fried and ate a whole canary to get back into shape after a night of drinking, while Haitians still practice Voodoo by placing 12 pins in the cork of the bottle that helped them need a hangover cure, and Puerto Ricans to this day go au natural by rubbing limes or lemons into the pit of their drinking arm. While these may work, not everyone wants to eat the family pet or practice a religion they have no experience in. These tips have been proven effective by science: Get to a Grocery Store Eat foods rich in the amino acid, cysteine, which includes poultry, oats, yogurt, broccoli, red pepper, garlic, onions, brussel sprouts, wheat germ, and dairy. This amino acid will help the liver process the alcohol easier and faster. You need to play nice with your liver. You need it. Go Bananas It’s no secret - Drinking will require you to take more potty breaks than usual, and this will deplete your body of needed nutrients. One nutrient that you really need is potassium as it is necessary to help your nerves and muscles work correctly. Eating bananas is an obvious choice, but potato chips and avocados will each also work. Bonus - If you are drinking margaritas, complement them with fresh guacamole and chips. Your friends will consider you a genius! Find a Tropical Island Your body needs electrolytes (salt is a key electrolyte lost when urinating) such as those found in sports drinks like Gatorade. While you may dig the fruity taste of Gatorade, coconut water beats it when it comes to effectiveness. Gatorade replaces two electrolytes found in blood while coconut water replaces five. Bonus - coconuts can be used for a variety of fun party games! Bowling, anyone? This One Will Freak You Out As you urinate, your body will become dehydrated and begin to steal water from the brain, which causes it to decrease in size and pull on the membranes which connect it to the skull, which in turn results in a headache. So, be smart and drink lots of water during and after drinking. Keep your brain happy and maybe it will help you remember not to drink so much next time.

January marks that rush to New Year’s resolutions, January Clearance Sales and starting new things. With that in mind, here are a few things for Artists and Art fans to consider this month. Get 2015 off to a good start. Did you forget to get that application in for Stanislaus County Artist Open Studio Tour? You’re not too late. January 15 is the final deadline to get your application in, with the photos and $75 entry fee, to get on the map. Open Studio Weekend is April 25 and 26 and maps will go on sale in March. For more information email openstudio.stanislaus@gmail.com Were you ignoring Turlock in 2014, and missed the Joan Miro show at Carnegie Arts Center. You can fix that old business by stopping in before the show ends in January 15. Great show. Miss the Fiber Show at Misltin Gallery in November, or want an encore to start your New Year? The Country Crossroads Quilters host their Heart of the Valley Quilt and Textile Arts show at Centre Plaza, January 17 to 18. Admission is $7, kids 12 and under in Free. www. countrycrossroadsquilters.com Delicato Family Vineyards 27th Annual Fine Art Show is open Jan 14 to February 7. If you’re reading this column at the start of the month, entries open until January 8, with application, fee and delivery of art for

consideration at the Tasting Room in Manteca. For a look at the application, click on the web site at www.dfvtastingroom.com The Central California Art Association New Members show will the featured event at Mistlin Gallery. The show will be open all month, and featured during Art Walk. This show is limited to the newest members of the gallery, to be followed up next month with the annual CCAA Members “Almond Blossoms’ show. 2015 is also time to get those new calendars. I’ve noted the City of Modesto Environmental Division calendar featuring local artists in previous months. Get one now that you can use them, at Mistlin Gallery. The Parks Group, formerly known as Parks Printing, issued their first Annual Art and Photo contest calendar, and I’m one of the local artists on that one. My month is April. Other Artists include Yvette LaForce, Jen Coffey and nine other local photographers and visual artists. The calendar itself is an interesting design and worth taking a look. The Third Thursday Art Walk map changes are coming up soon, but new displays will take place across the art walk map.. Best recommendation I can make for January is a new show, “Selfies” by artist Don Hall at The Chartreuse Muse. “Selfies”, is an imaginative trip of self-portraits of Don, as

done in the style of other artists. I got to see some of the paintings in advance in his Turlock Studio. This is a fun show, and the artist reception at the Muse will be January 15. Don is also doing work with Potters for Peace, and on the steering committee for Artists Open Studio. Ed Cesena and I are still showing work at

BAR Dive into 2015 at

he whirlwind of December parties, spending, drinking, and general hall decking can leave anyone feeling a bit holiday-hungover come January. I think a big, fat palate cleanser is on the booze menu after two months of holiday peppermint, chocolate, and pumpkin freaking spice flavored martinis. I’m implementing a no whipped-cream-top or graham-cracker-rim bar on January drinking, and I’ve given Phil a stun gun and instructions to look out for offenders. Time to detox from that sugar and get back to the basics, like whiskey. The Log Cabin Bar basically has all of your New Years resolutions covered: Want to get in shape? Saturdays mean live music to get your flabby butt dancing. Want to save money? Log Cabin Happy Hour is absolutely unbeatable. Want to get out and travel more? The place is in Turlock! Take more risks? Karaoke is on Wednesday and Friday. And, hey, if you’re trying to eat better, get your week’s worth of vegetables in during their Sunday Bloody Mary bar. Resolution success can be attained. I believe in you. This is not your cheese plate, martini, and inside voice setup -- it’s more of a big mugs of beer, big shots of whiskey, and loud live music situation. Bar manager, Lolo, the lovely lady responsible for keeping your resolutions alive through January, perfectly sums it up: “No frills; all fun.” Log Cabin proudly wears its dive bar badge. Taxidermy, marked up dollar bills, retired beer taps, and worn baseball caps cover the ceiling and walls. Add in Lolo pouring big ol’ shots, a resident one-eyed cat, and a back patio for smoking, drinking, and live music watching/dancing and you’ve got yourself a choice January hideout. The Log Cabin has been around since the 30’s, giving the place over 80 damn years of staying power; so obviously they’re doing something right. Whiskey and beer are the bar’s big contenders, catering to both the daily regulars and the late-night music-goers. And this might be a tad sentimental, but Phil and I couldn’t stop laughing during the whole interview. Lolo was hilarious and personable, the bar patrons were hilarious and personable -- Larry, the gentleman sitting next to me, told me more about Turlock over his Crown and water than you could read off any Wikipedia page; all this prompting Phil to make a rare statement on our trek back to Modesto: “That is a great place.” Affordable? Check. Off the usual track? Check. Got your New Year’s resolution bases covered? Damn straight. Fun? Log Cabin has been officially Phil approved. Happy New Year, Modesto. Taste of Fuzio!

has been with Fuzio for the past 10 years; they hope to wed by February 2015. Gina was the mixologist who made my specialty cocktails, but she also has the title lead hourly. Thomas has 3 kiddos, Madi 20, Matthew 18, and Kadyn 9 who told her dad “Just so you know, I will be your boss someday!” Love it!!! To keep up and in shape, Thomas is an ultra-runner; meaning he runs up to 100 miles at a time, whew~wee, not me! He is the VP of Shadow Chase Running Club, too. Thomas and Gina also enjoy dining at Modesto’s Bella Italia and Past Pronto. In the kitchen is Chef Justin Seward, who makes all the soups from scratch, like the roasted red pepper, as well as 90% of the desserts are made in-house including the blueberry cheesecake, a customer favorite. So next time I’ll have to save room to try the dessert menu! Modesto View signature question: Beatles or Stones? Gina, “I’ll say Beatles”, but I could instantly tell she felt bad about that, while Thomas was all happy as he answered “Stones!” like was that really even a question! Chef Viewers, thank you for continuing to trust me and my dining experiences as we all have choices in the New Year to make ourselves happy and well dined! Happy New You as my daughter Amanda says!

Start the New Year with the Taste of Fuzio! So what’s new at Modesto’s beloved Fuzio Universal Bistro that has been around for the past 14 years you ask? Thomas Lopes! He is the proud new owner with fresh energy to maintain all the customer favorites that will remain on the menu while he has a few new plans as well. Come spring time we can all look forward to some new outdoor seating on the inviting patio, some fresh paint, and lastly, new menu specials that will be inspired directly from local farmers markets with seasonal culinary delectable dishes. Making Fuzio even more exciting each time the guest comes back. Upon my dining experience at Fuzio, I decided to throw caution to the wind and let Thomas order for me! Yes, me, the mega control freak about what goes from utensil/ glass to my mouth, I went with it! New for me: Fuzio specialty cocktails; 1st was the Watermelon Itch Martini, that was sweet and tasty. 2nd was the signature Fuziotini made with Chambord, a raspberry liqueur, that was surprisingly refreshing opposed to sweet. I enjoyed both cocktails with the Firecracker Lettuce Wraps that are totally Dana~licious and I was off to a fantastic new start! Next came the Firecracker Pork Fusilli which packs a lil’ kick with the habanero pesto! My fork went straight into the center of the Rigatoni Alfuzio that thrilled me to find creamy garlic sauce and bacon, yes bacon! That was more than enough or so I thought, then came the sirloin steak entree with cheesy layer potatoes, and asparagus that paired beautifully with a lovely glass of Frank Family Zinfandel. Yep, I was feeling every bit of a new kind of spoiled and I was thinking Thomas must be some

kind of mind-reader knowing exactly what filet mignon, and coming from me, ultraI’d find to be Dana~licious. Please note: the carnivore, that’s high praise! sirloin steak was almost as awesome as a Thomas is engaged to Gina Pascan who

ROCKABILLY Rockin’ the End of 2014 & Welcoming 2015 with a BANG!! by Jennifer Allsup

Great pizza and a

In closing out Modesto’s Rockabilly Scene of 2014, I met up with three fine gentlemen. A newly formed Rockabilly/Psychobillly band just three months fresh to the scene. Let me introduce you to “Grease Hound” ! Frontman Rikki Romero has this to say about his passion for music: “I love playing music for the love of playing enjoyment and to escape the struggles of life. It puts me in my own little world. I am one of those guys if you told me not to do something I did it. We are kinda rockabilly/psychobilly/punk. I love this style cuz nobody really does it anymore, and it’s the most fun style to play; no rules involved. For Grease Hound we have only been together for three months, and with the bass player a little over a month. My influences are Buddy Holly, Charlie Feathers, Chuck Berry, the Brains, the Living Dead and many more.” Rusty Murry, drummer and heavy machine operator is a very easy kick back kinda guy. He loves the family life. His passion for playing music is very fulfilling and he loves the rush he gets playing live. Rusty loves the combo of jazzy rockabilly/psychobilly punk rock because it’s so different and exciting at the same time to play....and a challenge thats makes it fun. His influences are Phil Collins, Neil Pert, Buddy Rich, Bill Bruford, and Carl Palmer. Seth D. Baker is the bass man. “I’ve been in bands of every type of music and style because I love to play music and that’s what I do. I enjoy the rockabilly/psychobilly style because it’s blues-based punk rock that rocks; easy to play with plenty of openings for me to fill. I’ve been playing music since I was 6 years old and joined my first band with my older brother at the age of 10. My musical favs are Whole Some Goodness, Porno and the Perverts, Riff Junkies, Greg Scudders & Beer Thirty and my

full bar featuring St. Stan’s microbrew. Hero’s is all ages, so join the fun! most recent like is Scorptrio. My influences are Frank Zappa’s Mother of Intervention, Capt. Beefhart, the Stray Cats, The Cars, Muddy Waters, etc.” Sometimes I find these quirky questions most entertaining: JA :Where do you see yourselves in the upcoming 2015? GH: We hope to see ourselves in more big events. Modesto has lots to offer. Playing more out in the valley and surrounding areas, and just keeping people on their toes. JA: In the three months you have been together, what kind of strange occurrences happened while on stage? GH: Well we blew up a bass amp. I got shocked by a mic that I thought took my face off....had the cops called on us at our practice...but the cops told us, “Keep playing don’t worry about it.” and then they stayed to watch us! We finished our practice and loved it. That was awesome. I am pretty sure we will have more to come, since we

haven’t been together that long. JA: A world of “no rules in music”, what would be a rule you would let future musicians know? GH: Well.....have fun playing...it’s all about having fun at what you are doing. Work hard to get shows! You gotta get out there and put in your own work. And whatever sounds good to you at what you write or do....that’s all that matters. It’s for the love of your music. JA: If your evil nemesis was attending your show, how would you greet them? GH: Greet them with open arms...and show them this is a rocking good fun time and probably buy them a drink! That’s the kinda guys we are. Music to me is like one big family no matter what styles of music others play. Everyone is after the same thing: a good rocking show. Wishing you all a very Rockin’2015! Make it happen, invlove yourself and support local talents !

MAMA Happy New Year Modesto by Middagh Goodwin

THE INTERVIEW (R) Starring Seth Rogen and James Franco Now Playing!

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL (R) Nominated for four Golden Globes Now Playing!

Happy New Year, Modesto! Looking toward the year ahead, let’s all make a resolution to go out and see more bands, support more venues, and buy local whenever we can. Together we can create something greater then ourselves. Together we can make Modesto and the greater 209 a better place to live, work and play. Here is a little math for you. If an extra $100 per person was spent locally in Modesto, we would contribute an extra $20,810,700 into the local economy. If everyone in Stanislaus County did the same it would increase to $51,437,000. Calculations show that 48% of each purchase made locally is recirculated locally. This action doesn’t just benefit our friends, families and neighbors, but also ourselves. Each month you can check out the Modesto View and find a thousand or more things to do from live music to plays to what cool movies or events are happening at the State Theater, fun activities to help you spend that extra money in our community. Let’s talk about a few new places to check out in the New Year: First, Seasons Event Center where you can catch Beyond the

The Latte Handbook by Brandilyn Brown

It’s established that I love coffee. My adoration of the sacred bean is why I’m here. I love it in many of its forms. Liquid, of course, and solid, such as cakes and ice cream. But this time of year has many of us focused on our New Year’s Resolution. A study by the University of Scranton in 2014, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, reports that 47% of Americans who make resolutions do it for “self-improvement” reasons. My friend Vanessa Bradford, who owns Gem Perspective, is going to help me continue my coffee obsession despite eliminating processed sugar with her new e-book “The Latte Handbook”. I lived through Gem Perspective’s 24-day sugar shred last year, and I felt so good afterwards, that my resolution is going to be to get rid of processed sugar completely. (Honey and maple syrup come straight from nature, so I can use them in my coffee.) This e-book contains 10 coffee recipes using whole food ingredients. (Such as Butter

Coffee, Pumpkin Spice, Minty Mocha and even a Baklava, made with pistachio milk.) Yes, the coffee in the pictures look amazing, and of course the idea of “healthy coffee” is enticing, but how do these recipes TASTE? Can you actually make a delicious “whole food” latte? Vanessa and I met for a minitasting in her cozy abode, and I can tell you without a hint of hesitation: This is damn good joe. My favorite is the Sweet Cinnamon. BB: “Why did you start Gem Perspective?” VB: “I created Gem Perspective as a platform to help other women realize that health isn’t just about having abs or eating kale. [It’s for the people who wonder] how to not obsess about making healthy food choices, how to build physical strength alongside spiritual strength, or how to calm your cravings for junk food, this is the place for you. About ten years ago, I started a diet/ fitness routine for the same reason many other women do — to lose weight. But my

so much more than skinny jeans and salad. Think of the Gem Perspective as a mindset. An attitude. A movement. It’s the ability to appreciate and celebrate everyone’s unique path toward wellness.” BB: “Stones or Beatles?” VB: “Stones.” Check her out at gemperspective.com. If you want to purchase “The Latte Handbook”, use the link gum.co/ latte. It will automatically subscribe you to her website updates. (Which often include delicious recipes!) I’ve heard rumors there will be a second edition coming out in early spring, so stay tuned and follow her on Facebook for updates. Sip on, friends!

journey was missing two key pieces: spiritual and emotional wellness. Like many other women, I focused on eating less and fitting into smaller clothes. Everything I did was all about deprivation and minimization. I never educated myself about the most ideal ways to get healthy, much less gain a better overall perspective of how my body relates to my calling. This eventually led to an eating disorder, but that’s a story for another day. It took me nearly eight years to realize that health is about

Johnny Rivers –

Secret Agent Man for the Ages by Chris Murphy

One of the greatest opening guitar licks ever came from Johnny Rivers. Known around the world for “Secret Agent Man”, Johnny Rivers was a bluesman from the swamps with an ear for a great pop sound and dedication to the craft of songwriting who represented a new generation of American music. Breaking out at the Whiskey A-Go-Go in Hollywood the same week that the Beatles released their first hits, Johnny Rivers became the face of American music, and his hit live albums put the Whiskey on the map. LA and the Whiskey would become the breeding grounds of new music and it started with Johnny Rivers. He later went on to create Soul City Records and was a co-founder of the legendary Monterey Pop Festival. We caught up with Johnny between gigs. He is busy and touring quite a bit but his guitar skills are better than ever. Let’s meet Johnny Rivers! Chris Murphy: We are excited to have you play in Modesto. As you know Modesto is a music city too, home of American Graffiti and the Maddox Bros & Rose. Johnny Rivers: I’ve been through Modesto a few times and have played there before. It is a good music city and I am looking forward to coming back to play. CM: Were you inspired by 50’s rockabilly? JR: I grew up in Baton Rouge and I was inspired by the music of the south, the swamp music. I was influenced by rockers like Chuck Berry and the Louisiana blues sounds. That has always been the basis of my music. I play a really choppy rhythm that gets it going, and the band is able to follow it and make a really good sound out of it. CM: Right place, right time at the Whiskey. What was it like there in 1964 when the GoGo thing and the Beatles were starting to happen? JR: This was not right place [at the] right time. This was planned. I was the headliner at another club called Gazzarri’s and had a big following. They signed me to the Whiskey to bring my crowds and get the place going. It was a great time when so much was happening. During that time I had my first big hit “Memphis”. It was so happening that even the Beatles hit the Whiskey when they were in town. The Beatles came to the Whiskey one night after their show at the Hollywood Bowl. John Lennon had Jayne Mansfield with him and it was a pretty crazy night. CM: As a guitarist, I have played the lick of “Secret Agent Man” a million times, how does it feel to have something you created ingrained in pop culture? JR: It is just a really cool basic lick. I have a lot of good opening licks on my songs. I usually work them out on my Gibson 335 and find something that really can start a song up. CM: I’m a big Cleveland Rock and Roll history and Alan Freed fan. I love that story about how Alan Freed gave you the name Johnny Rivers. JR: Alan did so much more for me than that, I went to New York looking for him in 1958. I stood outside the building at WINS and the Brill Building to meet him. I played my songs that I had recorded. He then helped me make my next record and publish my songs. I was performing under my own name Ramistella. Well back in those days, long ethnic names weren’t popular. Dion just used his first name, Tony Bennett shortened his name, Bobby Darin shortened his and we were talking about how I came from Baton Rouge with the Mississippi River and he suggested Johnny Rivers, and I had my songs recorded.

CM: What band or musicians inspire you now? JR: Not many really. I am a real blues and rock and roll guy. People like the Stones, and Bob Seger are the people I listen to. There aren’t that many new bands that really practice the craft of songwriting that inspire me. I like the Black Crows and that guy who does the analog recordings with his band, Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters. I like that. CM: Have you seen the show “Sonic Highway” where he goes city to city? JR: I have seen some of those shows, and they are good. He has the right idea about this and showing the roots of music. CM: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? JR: I really don’t care about that. When people ask my why I am not in the Rock and Roll hall of Fame, I answer “Just lucky I guess”. I am in the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame and that means the most to me. CM: This is a great benefit show for Royal Camp, sending kids that are recovering from having been neglected or abused for a camping experience. JR: We are really proud that we can lend a hand to this organization. I means a lot to us to be a part of this. I am very active in youth programs. (Chris’s note: Johnny has his own organization that supports music education in public schools, the John R Ramistella Foundation. Music in the schools is a key ModestoView as well.) CM: Tell me about the band you are touring with and what we can expect at the Gallo Center. JR: We have a great tight band, guys I have been playing with for a long time. Most of us have been playing together since the 80’s. My son Michael is playing drums and he is really good. The 12 bar blues are the roots of the music. People are going to enjoy a great night of solid rock and roll and some good memories.

– Jim Holgersson

Modesto’s New City Manager Modesto’s new City Manager grew up in Moline, Illinois, a place that had many similarities to Modesto. Jim has been a city manager in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Germantown, Tennessee and Waco, Texas. From 2005 to 2011, he was city manager of Arlington, Texas and from 2000 to 2005 Deputy City Manager for neighborhoods in San Jose where he met his wife Sandra Esbobar. She works with the San Jose Redevelopment Agency and is a land use consultant as well as a community and special event organizer. Let’s get to know Jim. ModestoView: You did not intend to stay in Modesto as you were here for an interim role. What changed your mind? Jim Holgersson: I have enjoyed working with the Mayor and City Council. We share a common commitment to work together to make a difference. The city organization, though very lean in resources relative to challenges and community needs, continues to strive to do their best with what they have. When we benchmark our city service delivery efficiency with other cities you are hard pressed to identify cities that are more efficient with their resources than Modesto. But my third reason for seeking the permanent position is the community. The business community, the nonprofits, the other governmental agencies and neighborhoods are much more active, committed and willing to work together to make Modesto a better place to live, work and play. So as an individual whose life’s passion has been public service and working to make a difference, I admit to becoming attached to Modesto.

we did walk on the moon! We believed that “The American Dream” was in reach of us all. We were a generation that believed we could change the world for the better... And still do. It was not until a junior in college that I decided local government would be a good place to work with people to make a difference. After all, local government is closest to the people. MV: When you look at Modesto, what do you think that our key strengths are to develop as platform for the future? JH: We have strong manufacturing base, much of it related to agriculture, to build on and a pretty diverse economy in general. The Beard Industrial Park alone has a $4.1 billion impact on the economy. We are only 80 miles from the greatest entrepreneurial and job creating technological center in the world, Silicon Valley. Silicon Valley businesses are moving east and many workers are choosing to live here, where it is affordable, and work there. We have a great transportation network which can be enhanced. We need to work with our educational partners to enhance educational opportunities, especially

MV: When you were growing up, what did you want to be when you were a kid? JH: My childhood, high school and college years were the 60’s and 70’s. From Kennedy’s election and “we can go to the moon”, to “War on Poverty “, to MLK and civil rights, the struggles in the country with Vietnam, and the fact that dog gone it,

by Chris Murphy at the higher education levels. But our best asset is the work ethic and hard work that the residents and workers display every day. Finally, the County Economic Development entities are developing strong capabilities and a growing partnership to work together for success. The Alliance, Chamber, governments and business know the importance of working together and having “one voice” in seeking to grow our economy and to bring the jobs here so more people can live and work in their community. MV: You have spent a lot of time during your transition in downtown and been exploring our nightlife, dining and mingling with our people. What have you enjoyed most about this? JH: Downtowns are unique and a very valuable asset to a community’s success. Vibrant downtowns provide opportunities for entertainment, cultural activities, celebration of diversity, tourism and visitor destination, economic growth and alternative life styles. Modesto’s downtown has a great foundation to build on and offers over 100 businesses including every kind of restaurant you could want and many shops and service providers. I have enjoyed mostly the restaurants, the easy walkability, and the special events that occur only in the downtown. MV: How important do you believe the arts, music and cuisine are for economic development? JH: The Gallo Center is a remarkable asset for our community. The same cultural and music events that go through San Francisco, San Jose and Sacramento come to Modesto. We need to continue to grow events and cultural festivals in our downtown. Music and arts bring people together. They create the opportunity for our youth to discover talents they never knew they had. We celebrate life through the arts and music. MV: Over the last few

NEW

years, we have been championing our history of the home of American Graffiti and the birthplace of Rockabilly as a keystone for our community branding. How do you feel we should best make this part of our fabric and our community story? JH: Having experienced the Graffiti parade and several related events, as well as being a fan of George Lucas, why would we not build on what we have and what we are? Rockabilly has a huge following and can surely be a great opportunity for Modesto to build on. Adding to our existing events and festivals, creating new events, stronger marketing as a visitor destination and engaging all of our diversity in the community will strengthen our downtown as a cultural and music destination for all music and art. Building on Graffiti and Rockabilly makes sense. Let’s rock Modesto! MV: As we go into 2015, what are your key priorities for the operations and function of the City of Modesto? JH: Establishing a strategic plan and performance-driven organization; financial and economic sustainability; improving efficiencies and effectiveness; organizational development and investing in our employees; investing in infrastructure, economic development, redevelopment and jobs; neighborhood engagement and partnership; leveraging community assets; building intergovernmental and community partnerships; helping our youth succeed; building trust and transparency. MV: Your wife is very active in cultural arts and events, what is her desire to get involved in our community and what issues does she see as opportunities? JH: Sandra is very active and we share the joy of being out in the community and working to make a difference. She has lived in San Jose most her life and loves community organizing, coordinating community events, doing redevelopment and land use in the downtown and salsa dancing. She is very impressed with Modesto’s downtown and sees tremendous potential. She is also excited about finding a home in Modesto. MV: Our key questions; Beatles or Stones? JH: Tough question... Get off my cloud or “All You Need Is Love”, The Beatles. Contact Jim with your ideas and comments www.modestogov.com

Happy New Year head bangers!! I hope everyone had a great holiday season! Starting new is this year’s theme and there seems to be a lot of that going around! First we will start with my favorite sport, Independent Pro Wrestling. Modesto based Pro Wrestling Boshido has overwhelmingly supported our scene for years and it is time to support them. PWB has been tapped to participate in KING OF INDIES!! The King of Indies tournament founded by the late great Roland Alexander has helped launch the careers of many top wrestlers such as former WWE champ Daniel Bryan among others, and will be held on Wrestlmania weekend at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in the Bay Area. For more info go to www.prowrestlingboshido.com We will be dedicating our March Issue to PWB and Wrestlmania Weekend. In Metal News, this month we start with a new band and a few names you may already know: 2014 MAMA Best Youth band winners PERFECT NIGHTMARE have been tearing up our scene! They have been playing a great number of shows including an opening slot at the famed Whiskey AgoGo in Hollywood on the legendary Sunset Strip!! Speaking of LA, local legends DAM have been hard at work getting new material together for a new album will be heading into the studio soon. Bassist Russ Allsup promises a heavier album and we can’t wait for it. Now as I said, speaking of LA, Russ Allsup has relocated down south and has been spreading the good word of the DAM/Levee gospel passing on CDs to many influential people including Cheech Marin of Cheech and Chong, Keith Morris of OFF!!, Black Flag & the Circle Jerks among others. I cannot express the impor-

tance of what he is doing; getting his music to people of importance. You never know what will happen, but I have seen this work wonders for many bands. We wish our brothers of the FamDAMily the best of luck in 2015!! Also we have sad & positive news to report before we go...Modesto heavyweights NOTHING BUT LOSERS have parted

ways with Long Time bassist Dustin Oliver who will carry on with his band Divest Dreggs. Former Blastlung bassist Dave Bell will fill in for NBL in the meantime. When asked about the situation NBL vocalist Jojo Rush gave the following quote: “Dustin will be missed he was and always will be an integral part of the band. With that being said, Dave Bell is an excellent bassist and will be a great fit in our band of misfits. We will be back on schedule of recording real soon.” NBL has been tearing it up as of late and we also wish them the best of luck in ‘15. Now last but certainly not least, we will leave you with this: Zombie Death Stench is also hard at work on a new album. The yet to be titled project for Turkey Vulture Records should be released sometime in 2015 and snip-its can be heard on ZDS’s Facebook page. That’s it for me this month as always... KEEP ONE FOOT IN THE GUTTER AND ONE FIST IN THE GOLD!!!

UNPLUGGED

New Year’s Revolution by Patty Castillo Davis

Welcome to the new Unplugged View column. I’ve had fun composing Acoustic View over the past year and a half, but now you’ll have a chance to enjoy pieces by some of the other members of the Modesto Unplugged Music Federation as well. These are some of the finest movers and shakers of our local scene, and I do believe you’ll appreciate what they have to share with you. Enjoy! – Aaron Rowan

While 2014 has proven to have been a year full of opportunity, collaboration and accolades for the acoustic musician, especially the original singer-songwriter, I cannot help but be optimistic that January will open a year of High Art for our genre. We are witnessing the cultivation of quality, prolific songwriters in a place where covers rule, great shows in store brought by insightful promoters featuring Grammywinning artists playing alongside homegrown musicians. We have answered the global question posed to Modesto, “How should we balance access and excellence in the Arts” By supporting our grassroots music movement! Our needs are getting met; this is shaping up to be a great time of abundance. We have more events and listening choices than ever before. I am thrilled to be a part of this hometown club of singer-songwriter types, who have long been labeled and reticent and now are auspiciously managing the mainstream locally. I am so proud to have the “Queen of Everything” Grace Lieberman’s endorsement. She calls me her “Pop Singer Songwriter Girlfriend”. I will continue to host the “In the RoundSinger Songwriter Series”, the first being on Friday, January 23, 7pm at the Barkin’ Dog. We’ll be sharing the room with the exceptional Indie Southern Rock artist, Chris Farris. I’ll see YOU at DEVA Café for Breakfast Music on most Sundays. Purchase my EP and continue your nod to hometown cooking and homegrown music! www.pattycastillodavis.com Here is a little heat for your frosty Enero/ January: Friday 1/2, 2014 MAMA Best Americana duo Cottonwood Creek, with Brian Laidlaw and the Family Trade and Josh Davenport at the Barkin Dog Grill 7PM, $5 cover. Kali Dreams

by Javier Lopez

18yr old Kali Dreams is an inspiring up

and coming rap artist from “Young California”. This is a story about a young man living the California dream. We begin in a small town Ceres. I met up with him and the first question I asked was.. JL: You are working on a mixtape project? How many songs are you prepared to release? KD: I’m working on a 7 song EP, title not yet decided. Should be released this month (January). JL: Tell me about a day in the life of Kali Dreams? KD: I’m in college studying to become a lawyer. When I’m not at school, I’m in my studio, vibing with other artists and close friends. JL:What plans do you have for the upcoming year? KD: My plans are to get to the top of the ladder, get better and better at what I do. Prove that I’m not just another “rapper”. I’m serious about what I love, and that is recording music. JL: Where can we find your music? KD: G:Kalidreams Soundcloud: ‘Greedy

NEW

JL: What inspired you to pursue music? KD: I would see my two older cousins in the studio, one on the mic and the other engineering. The sound of good music coming from studio speakers is the rush I get when I record. JL: You engineer your own music what are you using? KD: Yes I do but its nice to know other engineers so I work with others such at TL and Doctor Bern. I have Pro tools ELEVEN. Javier’s Note: Congratulations to Jesse Ramirez and Emily Gertreu on their engagement. You are an inspiring young couple may you be blessed on your future ventures. Happy B-day to Humberto Sanchez and Juan Morris.

AUTHOR “Think of Me” “I’m not dead yet,” he said, echoing the line from Monty Python’s Life of Brian, one of our favorite movies. Then he smiled that half-a**ed, s**t-eating, ball-busting half-grin of his. I must have had that look again. The look that hinted at the reality no one wanted to face. The look that said he’d be gone soon. “I know that,” I replied. “You’re acting like I am.” “I’m sorry.” The Band was playing “The Weight” in the background. Jeopardy was on the TV. I was wondering what this world would be like without this goofy guy I’d known since third grade. “We should go out on tour,” he continued. “Call it the ‘Not Dead Yet Tour.’ Invite the Stones, Van Morrison, Rod Stewart, McCartney, and whoever in The Dead isn’t dead. All those old farts who aren’t dead yet, but should be.” I was reading through the diary he’d kept while we traveled through Europe together just after we graduated from UC Davis. He was looking through the photographs we’d taken on that trip. He had gone to see the world one last time before starting work. I had gone to see the world, too, because there was a good chance my next tour would be in Vietnam. This particular afternoon, we were trying to cover as much territory as we could in the time we weren’t sure we had left. He tried to play flute along with the music, but didn’t have enough breath. He tried to eat, but had no appetite. He tried to recite a poem, but couldn’t. “I’d like you to read this at my funeral,” he said “You’re not dead yet,” I paid him back and smiled. “Just read it, a**hole.” Much too soon after that conversation, a fellow poet and friend read this poem at his funeral because I couldn’t. Work like me in gratitude Glad to be alive Then at the end of all of this Sing and laugh and cry

Think of me – share the smile The one you can’t forget The smile that lasts past midnight And know we’re not there yet

Wrap me up, a gift of God Lay me in the earth I’ve known my life as dark and light Half of what it’s worth

Rest like me in fullness Beyond knowledge, beyond fate Trust the love that’s everywhere Rest now, sure in faith

Play like me inspired by The songs that are your own Some may try to silence you But don’t stop until you’re done George A. Rogers, “Think of Me”

Think of me from time to time When you hear a song You will know that love’s not lost And I’m not really gone.

My best friend would have turned 67 on January 24th.

BLUES&JAZZ What’s new with Jazz and the Blues News? If you love music, you’re gonna love this

by Eric Benson

And so it goes another year comes and goes, the calendar days race by with the hour glass telling us where and when and when we are running late. The acceleration of the holidays reaches a feverish pitch with shopping and checking our list and checking it twice until that morning ready or not when presents are rapped and tied in a bow, as is our year and it is time to move on to the next year with our glad tidings, our hopes for renewal and resolutions made. Wishing you all peace and renewal in the year to come until we meet again. Blue Monday Party & invitational jam returns to the Barkin’ Dog Grill the second Monday Jan 12th with the Ultra Lounge Group hosting with special guest Jamie Duberly Trombonist and arranger, and Ross McGinnis master Caribbean steel drum and percussionist. The Gallo Center for the Arts continues with their diverse booking in January features: the legendary Marcus Roberts’s solo Jazz & Classical piano, Johnny Rivers the 16th, Beatles Tribute 28 & 29th. The State Theatre brings in one of my fav’s in Blues and popular music Elvin Bishop on Jan 24th. His platinum hit “Fooled Around and Fell In Love” is all good but Elvin puts on an amazing show with Blues and R &

B with seasoned musicians. If you love the blues and a good time, come down, he never disappoints! And new to the downtown is Restaurant Urbano’s, ( in the location formerly of Clayton’s Restaurant) is in process for being able to have live music at that venue with great food and full bar available. They hope to have live music brought in by January. We did Blue Monday 7 years in that location and was a wonderful room for the music. Live music in DEWZ Wine Bar in Jan returns on Friday and Saturday nights 7 to 10:00 PM, incorporating the best local musicians playing in the intimate wine bar environment. What I have booked for all you music lovers: Friday Jan 2nd TBA, Sat 3rd,

BLUES

ALLAGES Happy New Year by Leia Johnson The new year is a big event for all of us. Each of us tries to create a resolution that will help us to be a better person. This usually means trying to give something up, right? Well, I read that 88% of us won’t go the entire year without “cheating” on our resolution. So, my suggestion for the New Year is not to make one huge change for the year, but instead that each day we choose to do something for someone else. Whether it’s opening the door for someone or paying for someone’s food, it will make a difference. As Aesop said, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” So for the New Year, and hopefully forever, I will try to perform at least one act of kindness each day.

GoModesto!

Another important event that is going on in January is Martian Luther King Jr. Day. Dr. King did so much for our entire world. To honor what he has done, January 19th is dedicated to giving back to your community. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a way of celebrating and honoring the legacy of MLK. If you want to learn more, check out the website www.mlkdayofservice.org So in January, and throughout the new year think of Dr. Kings words, “Life’s most persistent question and urgent question is ‘What are you doing for others?’” What great words to live by. So, have a great first month of a beautiful new year, and to those of you in school, have a great second semester!

Hi Folks and Happy New Year. by Earl Mathews I have some really exciting shows to tell you about to get your new year started off right. I am happy to announce we are playing 2 nights in a row with our friends “The Harlis Sweetwater Band” from Huntington Beach. On Friday January 9th we will be hosting a show with them at the Brewhouse at Hero’s on 9th and L Sreet in Modesto. The following night we will be at the Torch Club in Sacramento. Harlis and the guys came to play for us last February and were a big hit. We are really excited to have them back! Harlis describes the band as “Blues, Soul, Rock ‘n Roll”. I would add to that the word “passion”, because when you hear these guys dig into any one of the great classic blues tunes or one of their great original compositions you know it is coming straight from the heart. The band has been on a mission promoting the new cd, “Put It In The Dirt” for the better part of a year now and have been get-

ting great reviews and showing up on all kinds of bands-to-watch-for-lists far and wide. Just last year they have opened for “Robert Randolph & The Family Band”, George Thorogood and Ace Frehley of the band KISS. Last April I had the pleasure of going down to HB and sharing a stage with Harlis and his fans were out in force. We had a great time and I am so excited to have him back in our neck of the woods. Give him a warm welcome back! These are the only 2 shows that the Cryin’ Shame and I will be doing this month so please take the time and make your way out to the show for what will be a great night of music and fun. 9th Hero’s with Harlis Sweetwater band and Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame. 10th at the Torch Club with Harlis Sweetwater band and Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame. FIT Everyday is a Blessing-Walk to it! by Efren Martinez As we enter 2015 I reflect on so much that I accomplished in my fitness competitions in 2014. But I’m also reflecting on so much more of what I lost. That would be the borrowed time we have with each other and our pets. In the fall I wrote a piece titled “For Pets Sake” for The Modesto View Website. In it I discussed how important it is to not only take care of our own health through nutrition and exercise but also for every member of your family, including our pets. Sad but true, one of my little dogs got up to a whopping 39lbs in a short period of time. For nearly two years my wife and I struggled with countless ear infections with our dog. So out of love, we gave her just about everything she wanted to make her happy including her fill of food with little exercise. Over time this started a few health problems for her. On November 1st I made the decision to

give up racing for a while and start to exercise more with the family. This included my 4-legged family members, my dogs. It started out slow, but we got up to 3 walks a day, and nearly covered 3 miles per day in those 3 walks. The benefits of walking for my wife and dogs were suddenly very noticeable, within a week we all had more energy, we slept better and felt happy that we were all exercising together. Heck, all of us even started to loose some weight and my little dog Zoey’s ear infections seem to keep themselves at bay. But, my little Zoey couldn’t break 39 lbs even with smaller food portion sizes and exercise. It turns out that she actually had a fast-growing cancerous tumor in her abdomen. This tumor grew to the size of a grapefruit within two months and on the 9th of December, it ruptured and she began to bleed out. My wife and I made the painful decision that morning to end her suffering and we gave her back to

our Lord. Friends: everyday is a gift. Please make sure that you and every member of your family love one another daily, eat right and exercise together. It’s easy, just push everything aside and put your family’s health first and go for a family walk with your dogs. You’ll find that walking will benefit you and your health beyond belief and the satisfaction you’ll get by exercising together as a family will far exceed any medal or win at any competition. The ShadowChase running club has a walking group too. Log onto ShadowChase.org

to learn more about the benefits of walking. In loving memory of our little girl Zoey:

Fitness tips: ~Walking is more beneficial for your body in the long term versus running. ~Walk at an indoor mall if weather doesn’t permit outdoor. ~Walk your dog in an indoor pet store if weather doesn’t permit. ~When walking your dog outside, please pick up after them.

ZEN Change Your Mind by Mary Layton

The ability to change one’s mind is a pre- in an instant. So does the experience of recious possibility. Miracles can happen. It’s about changing one’s attitude and course of action. Changing your mind puts expectations of success and happiness, principles, belief systems, fears and doubts into a different perspective. If a certain approach didn’t work, try another way. If you thought something will never happen, tell yourself that it can. Strive to improve your life. Even if it appears that all doors are closed, another door may yet open. The key is to keep a positive attitude; to be receptive to opportunities that pop up, and allow oneself a brand new experience. The amazing thing is that the mind can change

ality. The other day I cut my finger. It hurt like crazy. All I could think about was my finger. Then, looking outside the window I discovered that my car was sitting in a rising flood of water. I ran to get my keys. After I rescued my car and got back in the house I realized that I had forgotten about the pain. There was the miracle: My mind changed! My focus was no longer on my finger but on my car. In this new year, as we make our resolutions, maybe we can make them come true by simply knowing that we can change our mind. There is a new community space that will change the face of arts in our community. The arts reach into our thoughts, dreams and connect people in so many ways. ModestoView has teamed up with the Peer Recovery Gallery to expand into the former Camera Center to create a community arts place called ModSpot. This “Spot” will feature visual, musical, spoken and performance art presentations and will showcase artwork across our community. All inclusive, all are welcome and we hope that this will be an art incubation place. Also teamed up are Project Yes Youth Employment Services, Stanislaus Magazine and we welcome Tony the Barber to this new J Street location and you can now get a Good Neighbor Shoe Shine. I am so excited that the ModestoView space is in the old location of Harley’s Records that occupied the former 1218 J location and is where George Lucas purchased his records growing up. Soon, the ModestoView “M” neon sign will hang where the Camera Center sign used to be. This will be Modesto’s “spot” for community arts. Please come by and visit, bring your shoes to get shined and leave with great art and a spiffy new haircut and a new copy of ModestoView and Stanislaus Magazines. ModSpot, 1220 J St. Downtown Modesto, 95354
