last month and that your gatherings of friends and family filled you with love and hope. We had so much fun in downtown Modesto creating Rockin’ Holiday and now, with the our creation of the 50 foot tall Rockin’ Tree, the Miracle On 10th St Parade, ModShop, Spirit of Giving Run and the amazing fun that was created at Modesto On Ice, Downtown Modesto was really something special this season. We hope you enjoyed it and all of us at ModestoView are proud to help create these experiences for our community to enjoy. Now let’s get down to business. Let’s make something! This is a new year, full of opportunity, full of hope, full of do overs, full of first dates and firsts of all kind. We have a big chance to make peace this year. We have a chance to make a new economy. We can make Modesto the city it is destined to be. We can make it the home of American Graffiti, the home of the best food and wine production in the world, and we can be the home of a new industrial revolution with programming, 3-D, and craft products that will attract the brightest and best. In this issue will meet Brie who has opened the TinkerTank, a place for people to experiment with high-tech manufacturing. There will be a Hackathon, and there will be some of the best music and art in all of the region. These are the things that make our community a desirable place to be for our new professionals, both young and old. Check out our center spread as we have

asked people in our community what they want to “learn to do something new”. We have asked “if you had a magic wand” as well and I think you will enjoy the response. We have already built and created momentum. The trees are all lit up on 10th St and will stay that way all year long. ModestoView and Collins Electric teamed up and made this happen. New restaurants like Ralston’s Goat have opened, Commonwealth is packed, and Sandude Brewing will be moving to 11th soon and Modesto On Ice will be open through Jan 21. Every little piece fits together. Thousands

of people rediscovered downtown Modesto last month. Why is this important? Cities with healthy downtowns win. These are the creative vibrant cities and this sends positive waves all the way across our city to Village One. We all connect together, we all need to work together, and in the same way, local and world peace is created, we create the community where we become our own champions. Each local business and resident benefits for every new connection we make. I want to wish our ModestoView community peace and prosperity as we go into 2016. We need to unite around our city, we need to embrace each other and welcome those with different backgrounds as this will make us even better. ModestoView stands for positive living. It is so easy for people to throw rocks and have a negative voice, but together we will rise above the din of negativity and reach the sky. Thank you for being ModestoView friends. Paul Thorn - Higher Purpose, for both kids and music. By Chris Murphy Kids in foster care need a higher purpose. They need a goal, something to reach for and one of the places that kids and go is camp. Royal Family Camp is a lifesaver for so many kids that have been abused, or have been in Foster care, or are in need of a family experience. You can lend a hand to these kids and you can experience one of the most critically acclaimed performers at the very same time. Paul Thorn played Modesto a few years back and blew the house away. Show organizer Joe Swain told me, “Paul has the right blend of higher purpose and raw rock sound that sends a great message, both for our program, and for the Modesto audience”. Paul has just released a new album, loaded with more road experience and will deliver a set that will inspire you, make you feel great and set your world right. Thorn’s new album “Too Blessed to be Stressed” delivers just that message. “In the past, I’ve told stories that were mostly inspired by my own life,” the former prize-

fighter and literal son of a preacher man offers. “This time, I’ve written 10 songs that express more universal truths, and I’ve done it with a purpose: to make people feel good.” Paul explains. Thorn’s has soul, rhythm and drive and his music has this 1950s rock vibe with an undeniable blues and modern roots feel, the gospel undertones, evoking the feel of a preacher addressing his congregation. Before issuing his 1997 debut, singer-songwriter Paul Thorn was a boxer, actually fighting against Roberto Duran, you can check it out on YouTube and then worked in a furniture store making chairs. That colorful past informs the working class ethos you find on his first studio albums. Elvin Bishop is one of Paul Thorn’s biggest fans and you can detect the inspiration drawn from Elvin and many others. You can feel the passion of his performance, passion that was inspired when he was young, watching his Pentecostal preacher father inspire

Volunteer Yolanda Newell “Pays it Forward” to Local Job Hunters Yo Knows Modesto (YKM) is a popular, onestop Facebook page connecting job seekers and employers from Modesto and surrounding areas, as well as sharing local resources for those in crisis, and affordable activities for all ages. Launched two years ago on January 13, 2014 by volunteer Yolanda (“Yo”) Newell, YKM has attracted almost 9,000 members notorious for positive networking and connections. Through the forum, they’ve coordinated everything from holiday meals to interview clothing. The secret of YKM’s success is one part fun, and one part empathy. The “Happy Bee” is a bright and cheerful visual notification that

Here is one example of the hope the Happy Bee inspires someone has landed a job or interview. Yo’s then 10-year-old daughter designed the Happy Bee on August 20, 2014. While the Happy Bee congratulates progress, the “Wake Up Call” encourages those who are still on the hunt. Most mornings, job seekers will wake up to a short, inspirational quote. Today’s (December 26, 2015) Wake Up Call reads, “HOLD YOUR GROUND. May you refuse to be bullied by your fears or pushed around by your past mistakes.”

STREET Rockin’ Thanks! By Chris Murphy We did it! The 2nd Annual Rockin’ Holiday was a hit. We have a new Modesto holiday tradition and brought back our past in a new fun Rockin’ format. We super upped our game and created the amazing Rockin’ Holiday Tree with an animated light show in 10th St Plaza. Rockin Holiday blends our American Graffiti History, our Rockabilly History and the nostalgia of days gone by, mixing it all up and adding a dash of Rockin’ snow and created Modesto Rockin’ Holiday. Hearing the screams as the snow started, the smiles on the faces of the kids and families when they were sitting with Rockin Santa, and the huge crowds of people after the parade and the Spirit of Giving run, made it all so exciting. With Modesto On Ice around the corner, downtown Modesto was the place to be this holiday season. Great to see so many people in the downtown stores, restaurants, cafes, and theatres. This is what teamwork is all about.

Thank you to all that supported this crazy idea and now we have a new Modesto tradition that people are talking about all over the region and Modesto On Ice is the icing on the cake. We are already excited about next season and what we can do to make it more spectacular. Thanks so much to my colleagues at Sierra Pacific and ModestoView for the support to make this happen. BREW It Is Time For Something Fresh, Something Exciting By Chris Murphy

As we go into 2016, let’s change everything up. Let’s make every day special and celebrate living and enjoying our community daily. Now what can we do to make this statement? How can we put our zest for life on display and share it. DING! Let’s have a fizzy fresh sparkling wine now and not wait for a special occasion. Now what? What to drink? Let’s bust out our Italian dictionary and put a new favorite on the top of our list. Prosecco it is. Pop the cork, drink it straight and …wait for it…. Even mix it! Now we are celebrating. I have been a fan of Prosecco for years now. I was introduced to the amazing taste when I was working as Global Marketing Director for Specialized back in the late 90s by our Specialized Italy team in Milano. My relationship with Prosecco was rekindled in Italy a couple of years ago with the addition of Aperol aperitif, over ice mixed as a spritz. My cocktail life has never been the same since.

rather than waiting for special occasion. For this reason, Prosecco is growing at more than 10-times the rate of the total wine category. MV: How would you compare Prosecco to Champagne? EG: They’re different, but they are both delicious. Prosecco, which is made in the Prosecco region of Northeast Italy primarily from the Prosecco or Glera grape, is a delicate sparkling wine that often has notes of green apple, citrus, white peach and hints of white flowers. Champagne, which is made in the Champagne region of Northeast France from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and/or Pinot Meunier, often shows a

yeasty character (think biscuit or brioche), and can display notes of apple, stone fruits, citrus and even cherry or raspberry. MV: Why is Prosecco better for mixing with apertifs and juices? EG: Prosecco’s approachable ripe fruit character makes it a very versatile mixer that has led many bartenders and mixologists to use it in a variety sparkling wine cocktails. It works in sweet drinks, like Bellinis, and bitter, like Aperol Spritzs, which are a frequent guest in my household. MV: What are some of the secrets to Prosecco? EG: Unlike Champagne, Prosecco doesn’t undergo a secondary fermentation in the bottle, which leads to an easy-to-drink style and an easy-on-the-bank account price. MV: What makes it so special and easier to drink? EG: Prosecco comes in a variety of styles based on where it’s grown within the Prosecco DOC, but they almost all share a light, delicate character that both drinkers new to wine and hardened oenophiles will enjoy. We have two in our portfolio: Cupcake Prosecco, which is ripe, delicious and easy to drink alone or as a mixer, and Chloe Prosecco, which is primarily grown in the Asolo region of Prosecco and is made in a drier, more elegant style that one can enjoy casually or as an accompaniment to a formal dinner. I don’t know what kind of food frenzy you were on during the holiday season but if it was anything like mine, it’s time to clean up the food act!!! 2016 gives each of us a clean slate thank goodness to make some fresh choices. Seriously, even if you are not a fan of clean eating, you will love this “big salad”. UNPLUGGED Fantastic Beats And Where To Find Them by Aaron Rowan 2016 looks to be a vintage year for fun and fiery acoustic sounds around town. Modesto Unplugged is moving into our new monthly home in the small recital hall at the Gottschalk Music Center, 1502 E St., where we will continue to curate intimate listening events in a wide range of acoustic genres. Our season begins on Saturday January 16 with Clyde’s On Fire, on tour from Asheville, NC. ROCKIN’ Hey friends, Nic Padilla of Beyond the Limits Promotions here. It’s been a while since I’ve written anything, and I’m excited to be working with ModestoView again. As we kick off 2016 and reflect on the past year, we look forward with anticipation to the exciting changes this new year brings. The music industry is an ever-transforming machine, and we must evolve to keep up! This means adjusting the way shows and events are handled. All of the details involved have to be reviewed; from promoting, choosing venues, and even band choices and ticket sales. I’m looking forward to everything this year throws our way, and am eager to share new ideas with all of you. I am excited to start working with new venues all over the central valley, and combine elements that we haven’t seen together before. Starting with the first of it’s kind, ROCKAMANIA! A music and wrestling show that pits promoter against promoter. Details for this once in a lifetime collaboration between Pro Wrestling Bushido, Beyond the Limits, and 209 Productions are still being worked on. They stormed their way into the scene in 2014; releasing their debut album, GENERATE, in May. Their live show is definitely one to see. Featuring former members of Motograter and Riven, they bring amazing power and energy to the stage. With Mike Woodruff at the helm, they can only go up. His passion for music is inspiring, and gives hope to the future. I look forward to big things from these guys in 2016, including national tours, and (hopefully) a new album. So we start anew. Just recently, I heard a young man from the Sonora are named Jack. He is the front man for “Johnny Devil and his Sins”. Jack started playing and singing a few years ago. According to my conversation with his mom at Rockin’ Holidays, Johnny Devil has a strong backing band, with Rick Torres of Rockin’ Rick and the Rhythm Wranglers. Rick switches from guitar and keyboard. Steven Huntoon is an amazing drummer and spoon player. David St.Germain is doing his slappin techniques on his upright bass. This foursome force will be gigging around between the foothills and the valley in 2016. Another band you should keep your ears open to hearing grow is “The Voodoo Killers”. Brie Parmer owner of the Downtown Tinker Tank The Downtown Tinker Tank is a new shop in the heart of Modesto that promotes creativity and tinkering! It’s much like a gym but way more fun! You can either become a member to use their equipment for a monthly fee, or you can take different kinds of classes on 3D printing, wood burning, laser etching, welding, to get a feel for what kind of tinkering you like to do! Have you ever wanted to turn a sketch you made in a boring college English class of an octopus into a sculpture? Now you can. Make a light sabre in case Kylo Ren comes for you? Yes, you can do that, too. Owner and entrepreneur Brie Parmer is ready to show Modesto how fun technology can be. ModestoView caught up with her at the shop to immerse ourselves in imagination, creation and learning, and we sure accomplished all three! MV: What inspires you? BP: So many things! As a consumer society, we can forgot how to make something, or don’t have the time to fix something. What I love, is empowering people to be creative. Worst-case scenario, you don’t fix what is broken. Who cares, it was broken anyway! Take it apart, see how it works, and try to fix it. Just try, you might learn something! MV: is there a STEM void in the valley? How does the Downtown Tinker Tank fill the STEM, engineering & programming void? BP: There’s more stuff than there used to be for high schoolers, but less for junior high. I remember wood shop in junior high, and now there aren’t such classes at every school. The workforce has lost a lot of skill in these areas; some because humans are being accompanied by or replaced by computers, but also because they don’t have the computer skills necessary to keep up with the changes in technology in their fields. But these skills are teachable! There needs to be more places to learn STEM skills, places to play with and learn equipment and software, but then there’s a void for those types of places. That is how we hope to fill this void: come here, come play, come learn, come tinker, and get the training to be a foundation for your career or life. The majority of our classes are small, so you get a lot of learning, a lot of one-on-one, and a lot of time to explore ideas and try things. You can practice engineering and math in a tangible way. Take geometry: by measuring and planning, and using math in a

relatable way, engineering becomes less scary. It’s isn’t just building a massive building, it’s building anything. Even sewage is engineering. There’s environmental engineering now. It’s a HUGE field. MV: Why Modesto? BP: Because I like Modesto! Born and raised. There’s no reason NOT to have this in Modesto. We can have the tech benefits other cities have, and be a tech hub if we want to. We have such potential for that! Sure it would be easier in a bigger city, but why choose easy? It’s important to have this here. Modesto needs it. If we give people awesome and fun things to do here, Modesto will be a place to stay [and set roots]. We deserve this! MV: What challenges have you faced making this dream a reality? What challenges do you think are coming? BP: All of them! Really! We are a social mission

company, but couldn’t start off as a non-profit, so then we tried to get investors and insurance, and hit road block after road block. We don’t fit any formula or category. The community didn’t really know what to do with us or what to think of this shop. By the very nature of who we are and what we do, people looked at us like we were crazy! “We don’t understand this, or how it will work!” But we educated,-we showed people what it would look like, we made Standard Operating Procedures to get insurance. Because the issue shouldn’t be worrying about people getting hurt on equipment, but rather getting people to not be afraid to try something they’ve never done before! You want to learn to laser etch? Come try. Want to 3D print something? Come try. Don’t be afraid. We will have “Fix it Fridays” at some point, where you just bring in your broken things, and we help you try and fix it. We will all learn and help each other. MV: What is the coolest thing you have made so far? BP: The tables in the classroom! They are adjustable!

There is SO much wall on this building, and we want to make really cool signage to cover it all. Once side, we’d even like to have client-based, so they feel like they’ve invested into something really cool, and a part of our memories. MV: What do you hope to accomplish in the next 10 years? BP: We’d like to be a non-profit (with an awesome board!) that runs congruently with the membership side, the class side, and to have an industrial shop further downtown for bigger projects and robotics. We’d also like to have a commercial kitchen. We’d like to invest more in the community, and provide jobs for other knowledgeable tinkerers to come share their wealth of experience, and teach classes. If you have a good idea, tell us. We want to help you foster it and make it a reality. It would also be cool to have a rotation of art, statues or statement pieces, outside to show the community the talent of our local artists. And rotating it keeps the art from becoming part of the landscape. It will stay attention-grabbing. We don’t want to JUST teach classes, we want to invest in the community and future entrepreneurs. MV: Anything else you want our readers to know about the Tinker Tank? BP: Unlike some other shops we’ve been to… we are not exclusionary. We are opposite of that, completely. Don’t be afraid to come try to make something. Don’t be afraid to break equipment, we can fix it. None of this is daunting! We are free of judgement, and welcome any skill level. If you are creative, or think you might be, and want to try laser etching, 3D printing, welding, anything, stop in and see us. You don’t need an appointment. Come hang out and tinker! Imagine yourself exactly a year ago...today. It’s absolutely insane how much you change in just twelve months. Within these twelve months you have had hundreds of experiences that help shape who you have become today. For the most part, you get to pick and choose the places you go and the people you go with. That is what is so lovely about the ModestoView because it gives you so many great ideas yearround. As you may already know, I am a sophomore at Downey High School. In the last couple of years, I have found a great group of friends who love to take part in all the fun Modesto

by Leia Johnson has to offer. Our favorite thing to do is Geocaching. Geocaching is basically a scavenger hunt...anywhere you go in the world. After downloading the app, it will give you the locations of all the “caches” in your area. You would be surprised how many are hiding right under your nose! Some are easier to find than others, but all are doable. Within the container (depending on the size), there are sometimes prizes, but always a name log. This is my favorite part because you get to see all the people who got it before you! Once you get good, you can even set up some caches of your own. Also happening downtown, the ice rink is open until the 24th of this month, so make sure that you don’t miss a great opportunity. It’s getting colder outside, so why not spend some time inside at the McHenry Mansion or the McHenry Museum. They are so rich with history and lovely people, so I highly recommend going. I hope this year and month are good to all, we will see how much we have changed this time next year. Until next month!

very year we are all for New Years Resolutions. Sometimes it’s about having better diet, exercising, learning something new, sometimes it a monetary goal like saving a certain amount, or getting a new job. But this year we want to delve deeper and find out what really makes Modestoans ticks. It is not just about losing weight or being able to run 10 miles every day. What are we going to do to challenge ourselves and others? What can we do to change everything we know? Living is not just about routine. Humans are designed to learn and grow, to foster ideas and create things. We need more of a “maker and developer” mentality. We need experience new things. Modesto needs to be a creative city with innovative thinkers and most importantly, filled with doers, so that we have a vibrant and exciting future. So with this heavy goal in mind, we asked a few folks what they wanted to learn this year. Let’s change this game and do something new!

I’ll start off, I want to learn how to sculpt or weld and explore my art side a lot more.

I know there are many types of meditation, but I have found over the past few months that I am going to continue to explore four types; breathing, mindful, prayer, and gratitude. My magic wand is called “Lights and Action”. I’d light up the city of Modesto! Make the downtown area really pretty. In the winter Modesto is just too dark to want to come out and play...at least for the homebodies which we have lots of. It would be great to have a dance place (with a minimal entrance fee to cover the rent) with a relaxed atmosphere in which you can dance to your favorite music. Certain days or evenings could be devoted to different eras, the 40’s, 50t’s, 70t’s, etc. It would be nice to have instruction as well, in Tango, Cha Cha, Waltz, Salsa or African dance! - Mary Layton With the wave of a magic wand I would like to see Modesto have something much like the Plea for Peace Center was in Stockton. A venue that would accommodate small and medium events 50-500 but was also a community center. A venue that had a separate area for those over 21 could drink but was all ages so that that next wave of fans had a place to not only see their favorite bands but could perform as well. Lots of wall space for local artist and a stage that was open to all styles of music, spoken word and theater. Space to do workshops and classes. First, I want to learn to roast coffee...actually bought a coffee bean roaster because my husband Aaron is all about “the fresher the better” when it comes to coffee and the home roasting movement is a science that fascinates me. Second, I love to dance and watch people dance. There is so much love, passion and energy in dancing. Rhythmic expression...it’s beautiful. And I feel like I could use a tune up. So I am starting a hip-hop dance class in January. Because, let’s think about this, are we human or are we dancers?! Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I want to become a better listener. In my profession I talk a lot. It’s just part of what I do every day. But great communicators are not only relentless about the perfect message, they find ways to make conversation reciprocal. It is equally important to be a great listener as a great talker. I want to be a better listener a year from now.

You knocked out Ronda Rousey, turned her face into a punching bag, but you didn’t stop there. You turned Bruce into Caitlyn Jenner—made a 66-year-old man the sexiest woman alive. You turned everyone’s favorite pediatrician, Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable, into the world’s most feared gynecologist. It was on your watch, 2015, when Kimye brought forth a Saint into the world just months after his mother’s a** broke the Internet. You gave birth to Kim Davis who gave life to anti-gay marriage crusaders. You gave us 50 Shades of Grey and Miley Cyrus’ tongue. Worst yet, you stood still as Ferguson and Baltimore rioted—black clouds still visible from blue flames that ignited liquor stores and schools that had no books inside left to burn. You gave us Syrian refugees, divided the country by fear and love, and left us searching for common denominators. But soon you will be a shadow as the bright lights of 2016 rise above the almond orchards you forgot to water. Clouds will rain love. People will find gratefulness in the smiles of children. SAVE METAL IN MODESTO by Mike Vanek 2015 has been a interesting year in the metal scene... What started with great promise has dwindled down to the bleakest of futures. Modesto has shunned the metal scene. We only have 2 bars to play at which many people in the downtown community are choosing to boycott due to an incident at the MAMA awards. Businesses refuse to hang our flyers and attendees at our shows are starting to dwindle as well. Some shows do well while most do not. With infighting between promoters an unwillingness on the part of veteran bands, bands breaking up, and a lack of new bands in the area the future looks bleak for what once used to be the flagship of the Modesto music community. But alas there is a light of hope. Bands like 2015 MAMA award winners NOTHING BUT LOSERS fight the good fight with help from Perfect Nightmare, Sworn to The Black, and Stigmurder and Etched in Stone we have a glimmer of hope. In 2015 Nothing But Losers added former Brutal Innocence drummer Dave Ussery on a interim basis while Aaron Jones toured the country with Etched in

Stone and when Jones returned, “Lunchbox” as Dave is known moved over to percussion duties and the band is now working on a new set that vocalist Jojo Rush promises “may actually turn people metal” they will be traveling back to the Fresno area to open for Puddle of Mud. Merced’s Stigmurder has welcomed former Rebels Mother bassist “Topher” to the fold and the continue to play shows all over California. Merced’s Cursed also struck gold in the Fresno area this year and opened for Exodus twice among others. Manteca’s Fortress entered the studio with money they won from a huge 5 round battle of the bands and Forever Obscured and Sworn to The Black have both released albums this year which are available on Spotify & ITunes. So there is hope for our metal scene but we need more or else metal in Modesto will be a memory like cruising McHenry and The Modesto A’s... #SAVEMETALINMODESTO We need more bands like 17Ten, Sovereign, and Dragons of The West to bring the spirit back to Modesto Thanks all for me this month as always Keep One Foot in the Gutter and one Fist in the GOLD!!

MAMA The Holiday Season By Middagh Goodwin Time flies when you are having fun and that is just what we do here at ModestoView. It has been two and half years since moving back to Modesto, and I am looking towards the future and reflecting on the past. I recently accepted a position at the Gallo Center for the Arts and I am so looking forward to that new chapter in my life. The Gallo Center is truly the gem of not only Modesto but of the Central Valley. I can’t wait to be a part of such a fantastic team. 2016 also marks my 30 year anniversary of booking and promoting in the 209. Look for Beat Happy! Music putting on and promoting events in the greater 209 to celebrate. I am also looking forward to continuing my role with the Modesto Area Music Awards; over the last couple years we have mixed things up a little and I think, all for the better. Brew Ha Ha at Deva Café on January 15th. As always the Brew Ha Ha is hosted by the award winning comedian Jimmie Menezes and showcases some of the best comics from the area. Plans are to do at least one event a month with a couple bigger things in the work over the next year, so look out for much more coming your way from us in 2016. Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame will be performing at the Gallo Center for the Arts on January 16th. This is their CD release show and will for sure be a sell out. If you are a fan of good rockin’ blues and have not caught this band live, you are missing out. Big Earl will be up at the Torch Club in Sacramento on January 29th so if you can catch them at the Gallo or just want twice the fun head up for that show too. With a new CD, new merchandise and a new logo, they have everything going for them in

spades and I expect 2016 to really be their year to shine. The Gypsy Shack has moved to a new spot in Sonora and from the sounds of it will be even better than the old location. They won the MAMA for Best Venue in 2015 and I know they hope to keep the momentum going. In fact, they will be celebrating the new space and their four year anniversary on January 29th. On January 15th Pamsterdam Promotionz will be having a birthday bash of their own with Nothing But Losers, Taking Fox Hollow, Bombs Overhead and more. holder. This is especially true when it comes to one’s home town. In recent years, Modesto has unfortunately and undeservedly been included in the top ten on a number of lists about places to live, work, or retire. Most haven’t Photograph by James A. Ewing been flattering. These are lists compiled by people who don’t live here. People who look at us through the prism of statistics and interviews with jaded refugees. Bloggers who sit at their computers and use Wikipedia for their facts and figures. News readers who get their information from less than reliable or objective sources. Few, if any, have ever set foot in our little town. Some are folks who grew up here, had a bad experience, left, and continue to blame their malaise and misfortune on the town. Regrettably, these people have not, do not, and will not look below the surface. Or spend time here. It’s impossible to know a place without being a part of the fabric of that place. Yes, we have homeless, but we have people and agencies that try to help them. We have crime, but we have a conscientious corps of vigilant law enforcement and charitable volunteers to counteract it. We have eyesores, but we have devoted community activists who work very hard to beautify and maintain our city. We have pollution, but we have committed citizens working diligently every day to reverse that. We have poverty, but we have organizations and schools, selfless advocates and educators dedicated to assisting people to change their circumstances. We have auto theft and meth labs, but we also have Graffiti Summer and farmers’ markets. We are far from the urban cultural centers of San Francisco or Los Angeles, but we have a symphony orchestra, an opera company, a performing arts center, a theater company, a minor league baseball team, and a ballet company. For every Scott Peterson, there is a George Lucas, Jeremy Renner, or Ernest Gallo. A town is its people. And ours are stellar.

JAZZ&BLUES If You Luv Music You’re Gonna Luv This by Eric Benson Season’s greeting to you and yours And so it goes another year comes to pass, wrapped up and tied in a bow celebrated at Midnight to chortlings voices to “Old Auld Lang Syne.” The resolutions made, some realistic and some not but we all have good intentions do we not? And in keeping with the reason for the season we hope that in the New Year, we make our piece of the world a little better, a litter brighter. And whether you pay it forward or as Mother Teresa said: “do good things… some will be jealous and question your motives but do good things anyway… because in the end it is not between you and them but between you and god.” With all the struggle and strife in the world most of us are good people, we do good things. There may be an isolated incident of violence somewhere that the press gets a hold of and blows it up into front page news. But the reality is when I am out and about at Blue Monday or wherever there are groups of people most of us behave well, we are the good

people doing good things, taking care of each other, doing the right thing. So keep on being good people cause when it comes down to it there is no dichotomy of “us and them”, there is only us and no other. So keep on being good people, pray for peace and pray for rain. Hello everyone and happy new year. We are kicking the year off in a big way this month with a ton of great events for you to check out. This month is especially big for me personally because we (Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame) are releasing a new CD on January 16th, titled Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame, Live at the Gallo Center with a release party at the Gallo Center on January 16th as well. Latter in the month on the 29th we will be having another CD release party at the Torch Club in Sacramento. I can’t tell you in words how excited we are to share this new CD with you all, so please take a moment and check us out at one of our upcoming shows or go to our website and order by mail. Many of you have read in my column about the Sunday breakfasts at Deva Cafe. This tradition will continue in 2016: Jan 3rd Patty Davis and Tim Allen will host from 10 to noon. Rob Hill band will be hosting on the 10th and the 24th. Another recurring event that you should keep your eyes open for is the weekly blues jam at Garlic Brothers in Stockton which is taking a

couple weeks off and restarting on Jan 14th. It’s hosted by Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood. You can also catch Jeramy Norris and his band on Jan 1st playing a hangover show on Moore’s Riverboat starting at 1pm. They will be at the Torch Club on Jan 7th and on Jan 8th at the Railroad Saloon is Livermore. Also at the Torch Club on the 14th you can catch Matt Rainy and Dippin’ Sauce. Matt does a great mix of blues and dead covers. He is really worth checking out. There are as usual tons of great events out at Black Oak Casino. Some of the ones I find the most compelling are on the 7th Little Fuller Band, 16th is Chains Required and on the 22nd Roem Baur. I am saving one more Black Oak date for the end of my Column so keep reading. At Barkin’ Dog this month on the 8th Tony and the Tough Times will be playing harmonica driven blues. On the 29th Patty Davis Band will be at Barkin’ Dog. I had the pleasure of sitting in with Patty and her band the last time they played at the Dog and it was a great time so make sure to try and make this one if you can. I am going to close out this month by telling you about someone you may have already heard of, his name is Paul Thorn. Mr. Thorn is good, he sounds good and plays good and his

songs are fantastic. The part about his music and his personality that really strikes me is his realness. Listening to him talk or play and sing, just makes you feel like you are with a personal friend. That my friends is magic. You can’t bottle that feeling you have to go out and experience it for yourself. Well you are in luck because he is making 2 stops in our area one at Black Oak Casino on Jan 21st and again the next night at the Gallo Center on Jan 22nd. As of the time that I am writing this there are tickets available for both shows so if you are lucky you can still get yourself a seat. ZEN Health and Wealth by Mary Layton For those of those you haven’t noticed yet, Modesto’s city slogan “Water Wealth Contentment Health” has found a second place to shine in form of a welcoming inscription on one of the pillars supporting the new Pelandale overpass. Seeing this again, I was reminded once more of what this slogan meant to me in terms of Health. 2015 was a super busy year with lots of changes. Throughout the year, we were running to keep up and finally during the holidays we were able to catch our breath. It is during those busy and overwhelming times that we can easily forget to pay attention to our most precious asset: Health. My grandmother who lived in another country used to end every phone conversation with, “remember, health is the most important, my child”. I think she’s got a good point! A headache, a toothache or a stomachache and our momentum is compromised. Health will trump even Wealth because even with all the money in the world, the lack of health makes

life less enjoyable. The inconvenience of poor health affects our life, our work, our relationships, our lifestyle. A little change in our lifestyle, a good diet, good thoughts, regular exercise and walking in fresh air can already do a lot. The health of our environment ties into our own health, our own well being. For example water is important to the vitality of our environment as much as our own well being. Extreme climate changes are difficult to ignore and should in themselves rally us to adjust our routines accordingly. We then are more able to help our community and families. Health brings contentment. People usually make New Years resolutions which often include taking better care of themselves. FIT Running in El Nino by Efren Martinez Lately we have been hearing a great deal about preparing your home and family for another wet El Nino year from all sorts of media outlets including the National Weather Service. This is smart advice and if you are into fitness as I am. It would be wise to prepare for your Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon with this valuable information I’m about to share with you. With March being one of the wettest months of the year, and it being an El Nino year, the odds are that you will have a very rainy and windy run for your 2016 Modesto Marathon. But don’t let that discourage you, just acclimate yourself. Let’s be honest, it’s really no fun to compete in freezing, windy and rainy conditions. I should know, I’ve been there and done it as a few of you have in previous Modesto Marathon El Nino years. The best way to conquer this unfavorable weather challenge is to train in it prior to. Back in 2013 I competed in The Escape from

Alcatraz Triathlon in the dead of winter. The conditions were horrible and the bay water was 14 degrees colder than it would have been in the summer. In fact, many of the San Francisco media sources referred to all the 2013 Escapees as the new 49er’s because this was the bay temperature that wintertime, 49 degrees. Knowing that competing in this triathlon in the winter was going to add a level of uncomfortable difficulty, I switched out my training to help me get through as you too should if you are running The Modesto Marathon in 2016. One of the most important parts of my training for my winter triathlon was getting acclimated in swimming in very chilly waters. So my trips to Santa Cruz and to San Francisco’s Marina Green were frequent for my swims. As far as the other two legs of the triathlon, biking and running, Modesto was a perfect for it. My best advice to you if you are running in the Modesto Marathon is to train in the most unfavorable

wet and rainy conditions possible. Keep your eyes on the weather forecast and pick the days that will be filled with the worst weather conditions to run in. The windier and wetter the better. Will it be uncomfortable, sure it will, but this type of training will help you get through if mother nature decides to throw her worst on you as she has in the past. This type of training will be exceptionally worth it in two ways: if it rains it will help you get through. If your race turns out to take place on a warm California sun shining day, it will be a picnic compared to what you’ve put your body thought prior to, with training in the worse weather conditions.

As far as me competing in another winter triathlon, I won’t be doing that again. I should have gotten a clue not to do it when many of the professional athletes decided to pull out of it early on. It was much too cold for them and as it proved deadly when one of the tri-athletes that year had a heart attack and died soon after he hit the water. Some say it must have been the initial shock of the freezing water that triggered his cardiac arrest. Despite that, it was the most miserable and saddest triathlon I’ve ever competed in. A Night of Spoken Word & Dance

January 8th & 9th at 8:00pm Center Stage Conservatory, 948 Eleventh St, Lower Level inside the City Center A 2 night fundraiser to support the development of an original piece of conceptual theatre featuring spoken word and dance. The show will consist first of a series of Spoken Word artists: Basil Overfeild, Briana Hammerstrom, Chad Sokolovsky (only January 8th), Cristina Sandoval, David Mendez, Elizabeth Sousa (only January 9th), Melchor Sahagun, Nandi Matthews & Summer Krafft. Delta Kappa Gamma Society, a group of women educators is sponsoring a fundraising event to raise money for Modesto City Schools Music Department, for the purchase of music instruments for its elementary schools. The cost is $25. This is a Cuban event, with Cuban food, music, and a film about Cuba called “Santiago es Santiago”.

Teen Author Juliana Presto Releases New Novel

One year after the release of the debut novel “Fire and Ice: The Awakening”, teen talent Juliana Presto has just released book two of the trilogy, “Fire and Ice: The Turning”.
