Happy New Year! My batteries are charged up!

Even with the craziness of the holidays, Rockin’ Holiday, New Years and our crazy remodel of our house, I am fueled up with the strength of my family and friends. We are so blessed to have had some great times of gathering and these are what powers me up. Sure it is all super busy, just like everyone else, but the holidays really bring you together to be with each other. And now we strap in, fuelled up and ready to blast off into 2017.

All kidding aside, we really are the home of Star Wars. It seems like we are all living at hyperspeed these days and that is what powers me up. The passing of Carrie Fisher and so many in 2016 gives pause. We need to accept the urge to slow down, linger, and to not drive through. Let’s eat nice long dinners, share experiences and ideas.

That is truly what will make us a better community. Our visit to Camp 4 brings us back to this centered way of being. I know, many of you who know me think it is insane for be to be advocating sitting and slowly enjoying something, to eat nice long dinners instead of fast food/drive through, but in 2017 I really intend to try to be more like this. Life is moving way too fast and moments mean more. Like Steve Miller once sang, “Time keeps on slippin’ slippin’ slippin’….

Into the future”. The question is, where do we go from here?

A new hope. This is a pretty bold statement, but 2017 needs to be a new hope. The global politics not withstanding, this is the year that Modesto

needs to pull together and be the city we can be. We have to control our own destiny and that takes teamwork and vision. We have to be honest about where we are, what we think can actually happen, and most importantly turn our wishes into reality. That’s why we asked these questions to a wide group of people in our Big View this month.

My head explodes every time I walk into Camp 4, as this is the secret sauce to bring us together about who and what Modesto is and what it can be. We must celebrate our history, our classic culture and make it all about the future. These go hand in hand. This doesn’t mean everyone has to like Elvis or drive a 57 Chevy, but that true authentic American Graffiti and Rockabilly history is our foundation for our future message.

It gives us legitimacy to be that cool amazing city where young people want to come back and people want to visit. People crave authenticity and this brings us to the farm fresh to table, the craft cocktails and a culture that includes all of the people and ethnicities in Modesto. Every good new story starts with a good history and this where we need to go.

For 2017, ModestoView will focus on some important projects. 1) We intend to make sure that our classic history is part of our future branding and message. 2) We will be champions of live music. Live music makes the world go round and it is fundamental that we have live music friendly ordinances and policies. The new NonProfit MAMA Association will play a key role.

3) Downtown must be friendly, walkable and

arts friendly. A strong downtown makes the entire city stronger. Sure we sound like a broken record sometimes, but this is key. 4) We want to encourage people to get involved, donate their time, knowledge and ideas to give strength to those that need it. A family is only as good as their weakest member. 5) Make living here fun.

Period.

We love Modesto and our goal here is to share the fun, share the excitement so that you can share it too. Tell your friends, tell your kids, support your favorite bands, bars, and local businesses and post good stuff on social media about our community. Carrie Fisher In memoriam this issue is dedicated to Carrie Fisher.

Her passing had a powerful impact on Modesto USA, the home of Star Wars. There is no doubt that many ideas from this movie and American Graffiti were based on Modesto native George Lucas’ Modesto upbringing. Being the #homeofstarwars and the #homeofgerogelucas is a badge of honor for Modesto. Carrie Fisher was the common bond of strength, bravery and reassurance in the Star Wars series. There is a lot of Princess Leia in so many women and that connection means a lot to Modesto. In fact, our All Ages editor Leia Johnson was named after Princess Leia. We mourn her passing, we celebrate the gift that she gave us and may the force be with her and her family now and in the future.

COMMUNITY Looking Forward to 2017

By Maryann Spikes As we look ahead to 2017 in our focus on prevention of homelessness, we must first take stock of what led us here. David Moore was one of 39 people remembered on December 21, the first night of winter and longest night of the year, when the Salvation Army hosted the Not Forgotten homeless persons memorial honoring those who died experiencing homelessness in Stanislaus County in 2016. I’ll never forget how Kristi Ah You coordinated a memorial at Franklin and Downs after David passed away from cancer March 8.

The first name on the list of people remembered at Not Forgotten was Nicholas Kliewer, the victim of what appears to be vehicular homicide on December 17. In this City of Great Neighbors, we appear to have let - and even caused - some of our neighbors to fall by the wayside.

That is our reality despite the County’s Focus on Prevention initiative that began in May of 2015, and now includes excellent Neighborhood Homelessness Engagement Training that is starting to take off. Have you ever noticed that when you first start addressing a problem, it sometimes gets much worse before it gets better?

Regarding the low-barrier shelter projected to open late spring or early summer next to the Salvation Army Berberian Shelter on D Street, Christina Kenney with Turning Point Empowerment Center (and all around angel) assures that “there are lots of conversations around coordination and partnerships. Many agencies are at the table, every single week, some of us for several hours atop our regular contracted duties for our respective programs. At these tables we are all getting closer to reasonable expectations. As anything worth having doesn’t come easily, ensuring all contributors are heard and roles are considered is very important in these stages.”

The Housing Innovation Workgroup, in which everyone is invited to be involved, is working on increasing transitional and permanent supportive housing by building or remodeling affordable housing units, and cultivating successful landlord partnerships. The next meeting is set for January 18, 2-3pm, at 917 Oakdale Road in Modesto, Room 2 (County Learning Center). Families can turn to Modesto Family Promise (549-9454), the abused can turn to Haven Women’s Center (577-5980), those on the brink of homelessness can request a housing list from CHSS (527-0444), and those needing to detox can do so at Stanislaus Recovery Center (541-2121).

ART What’s Coming Up in Art View?

By Jim Christiansen Art in Modesto…. What’s coming, and what would I like to see? Our listings and artists on display change, but often the venues the same.

So what’s new?

I want to see Chelsea Torres Addison Bavaro’s solo show of her paintings at MJC Art Gallery.

Title is “Homebody.” Jan 10 to Feb 2. This is likely the biggest show of Chelsea America’s work to date, and I hope more people than usual show up at the MJC Gallery. I’d like MJC Gallery to send more advance notice on the shows there to get the word out. Rumors in downtown include a new gallery up on J Street by local artists, and a new spot of Art & Wine events near 16th and J. I hope both come to pass.

Third Thursday Art Walk comes up January 19. Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock will have a new show schedule, as will CSUS student gallery Art Spot on Main. So stay tuned!

Next month, we’ll see the kind of arts initiative I like. Big. The “Foto Exhibition” up the entire month, all over downtown Modesto, will feature 22 photographers, of many genres.

Art Walk is great, but it’s nice to see art viewable and celebrated more than a single night a month. The scale of this exhibition puts the visual art scene front and center. Thank you to the organizer Dave Schroeder.

Stanislaus Artist Open Studio 2017 has a new preview show format, at Mistlin Gallery for three days and after hours after 5 pm, March 27, 28, 29. New Artists should consider being on the map for the April 22 and 23 Open Studio format. Final Deadline to enter is January 15.

It’s good to get out of town to explore art; you may run into your 209 artists when you do. Quite a few area artists show out of town, regionally and nationally. While we anticipate these awesome events, we encourage you to get a flight of beer somewhere and taste the hoppy rainbow. Introduce your taste buds to new flavors and genres!

We decided to sip the world with a flight of beer from the new Dust Bowl in Turlock. We started in India with an India Pale Ale (Cherry IPA), visited Germany for a Gose (aptly named Gose), took a detour to a Mexican inspired Amber Lager (Taco Truck), and drove shore to shore of the US of A with an American Blonde Ale (Ginger Spice Blonde) and an American Barleywine (Brain Spear).

After many years of tasting beers, this trip finally resulted in Brandi finding an IPA she loves! This is quite an accomplishment. She encourages you if you are timid in the IPA department, to try their Cherry IPA. The Cherry gently tames the hops so they are not overpowering and adds quite a bit to the aroma with a hint of citrus from the hops. Very enjoyable!

The German Gose was an extremely light beer that tricks you with an incredible full-bodied flavor. This is drinkable all day every day. (Not that we recommend that of course!)

The Taco Truck Amber Lager…. thin, clean, yet lightly creamy and very gentle on the hops. This maltier upgrade from the Taco Truck Lager definitely reminded us of a Dos Equis Amber. Its low flavor profile makes it a great beer to pair with something spicy.

If you like ginger beer or Henry Weinhard’s soda, you will also appreciate the take on the American Blonde Ale, the Ginger Spice Blonde. Creamy and light, with just a hint of spice in the nose, it’s a pleasant sipper. Don’t expect to chug this, it’s for nursing. The bulk of this beer is in the aroma, so be sure to keep smelling it. It is divine!

Our favorite of the evening though was the Barleywine. These are hard to come by in Central Cal, so go enjoy this while you can. It’s fruity in the front and hoppy in the back!

This goes down like a thick IPA, rich with malt, and sweet enough that your brain might confuse it for a stout, though it’s certainly a traditional barleywine. The sweetness fades as it warms up, so this is another nurser if you want to savor all its layers.

With a full 20 taps, you can sample most of the world in one stop. Come out and enjoy a flight and some of the beer cheese soup (but dip some fries in it! Delicious!) If you see us there, challenge us to a game of Jenga! We’re not very good at it after a flight of beer but it’s about having fun and not winning, right? Right??

DESIGN DesignView: How Might We…?

by Lee Davis, Founder, Modesto Design School Design shapes all aspects of our life. Design is a creative and collaborative process that helps to uncover different and better ways of making, doing, and thinking. Designers create all of the objects we interact with and all of the spaces where we live, work, play and pray. Designers imagine innovative ways to solve complex business, government and social problems.

Designers also imagine, envision and create the processes and systems that we experience around us. Design can inspire us to envision and imagine new approaches, possibilities and opportunities.

Modesto’s design history is anything but modest. Our city has a rich and remarkable heritage of design, innovation and invention dating back at least as far as 1873 with John F. Stewart’s design for a “duplex windmill,” the first registered patent of a Modesto inventor. This culture of design has continued over nearly 150 years with design innovations and inventions across all areas, industries and sectors of Modesto and across all design disciplines – architecture, graphic design, interior design, product design, fashion design, urban design, and design for social innovation. The “Modesto Design” exhibit I curated for the Modesto Art Museum in 2014 demonstrated that Modestans have created inventions, innovations and designs in all sectors and segments of our city, including in agriculture, the arts, health, industry, transportation, public service, etc.

According to the most recent Otis Report on the Creative Economy of California, design-led

industries created 1.6 million jobs in our state (more than New York and Texas combined), representing nearly $375 billion dollars in economic activity, and generating $15.5 billion in tax revenues for the state. A vibrant creative economy that elevates and values design creates employment, attracts and retains top talent, generates tourism and cultural attractions, and improves overall economic development and quality of life in a city. Simply put: design creates value far beyond simply making things look pretty.

When designers approach a new creative challenge, we often start with a “How Might We…” question, i.e., “How might we find a new way to improve X, reimagine Y, or accomplish Z?” “How Might We” questions open us up to more possibilities, creative options and solutions.

As we embark on the new year of 2017 and approach our proud city’s sesquicentennial in 2020, we should draw inspiration from our rich design heritage and collective creative spirit to ask: How might we reclaim Modesto’s long and strong heritage of invention, innovation and design? How might we spur a culture of design, invention and innovation in all sectors and segments of our city? How might design help us to move Modesto to the forefront of innovation across the business, government and social sectors? How might design help us to create an ambitious, inspiring and collective vision for Modesto for 2020 and beyond?

It Is All About the Lingering, and the Questioning?

The Camp 4 Team From Left Lauren, Ian, Ashley, Mike (in the back), Ashley “G”, Damon, Marissa A visit to Camp 4 is more than a culinary taste sensation, it’s a walk into a space both steeped in history at the same time pointing the way to the future. In a way, this place is a metaphor for Modesto, where we have so much classic history to build on at the same time we have to be fresh and exciting for the future. At Camp 4 the legend of Royal Robbins looms large in ambience, but the vibe and the experience is all in the capable hands of Damon Robbins. This is truly an analog experience, like listening to both sides of Abbey Road on vinyl with friends.

I was born in Yosemite, so it has always been a special place for me. I remember ratting around the original Camp 4 at the base of El Capitan, Happy Isles, Indian Caves and other places as a kid. I bought one of my first racing frames from the Royal Robbins sport shop that was the originally in the Camp 4 restaurant location. There is authentic history to every bit of this place and one meal, snack or sampling of wine will take you to another place. “The best meal is one that makes you ask questions, or linger for a time talking with friends” say Damon, a soft spoken, focused and naturally curious person.

Trained at culinary school, Damon received most of his experience working and operating restaurants, notably Frisson in San Francisco with long time friend and Modesto native, Joe Hagraves. Those experiences and his passion for life outdoors lead to the return to Modesto.

Growing up in the Robbins family was

amazing, with Royal climbing and kayaking around the world, and Liz climbing, designing and making sure home cooked meals were a priority, no matter where the family would travel. Wine and spritz drinks are alone worthy of an afternoon or evening at Camp 4. Damon and his team will introduce you to new wine flavors. I usually just put myself in their hands to choose. Europeans have long known that you can make a tasty spritz cocktail with fresh in-

gredients and tasty aperitifs. They are meant to be sipped and enjoyed and the Lizard and the Lion are tasty. Don’t even think about leaving without tasting the chocolate Panini.

Prospect Theater Project is presenting a full production of my play, Migrant Mother: A Legend of the Strength of American Motherhood. It tells the story of the encounter between Dorothea Lange and Florence Owens Thompson that led to the iconic photograph, “Migrant Mother.” The subject is of interest because Florence Owens Thompson lived in Modesto for a time and is buried at Lakewood Cemetery in Hughson.

The Prospect will be hosting a special event during the run of the play on January 18th.

We will be inviting local photographers to have a conversation about the concept of “framing reality.” We will discuss the following statement: “The camera, as theorist Andre Bazin long ago believed, is essentially an objective recording device; as such, it cannot lie. If one accepts this notion, then neither can the camera be used to express the subjective vision of an individual artist.”

That quote will be the departure point for a conversation about “documentary photography,” especially as it relates to the work of Lange. There are those who believed Lange never staged any of her photos. There are others who believe she may have. The event will take place on Wednesday, January 18th at 5PM. It will be a free event, although donations will be gladly accepted.

We will start the conversation by posing the above statement. We will then ask each photographer to give a short statement about who inspired them to become a photographer and who influenced their style, as well as their view of the statement. And perhaps show an image or two of their own to illustrate their point. We are also inviting each photographer to showcase and sell their work. The exhibit will remain at the Prospect for the Third Thursday Artwalk on January 19th and throughout the run of the play and the rest of the month of January. The director, the actors, and I will also participate and discuss the process of bringing this play to life. Tickets are available at www.prospecttheatreproject.org

entertainment we can only hope that scores of heroes were born, only we just don’t know it yet. “ That’s what my sister said over the holidays. I hope she’s right.

One of many people’s country music heroes was taken away from us in 2016, the late Merle Haggard. His musical influence can be heard from the honkytonks in Nashville to the local music scene in Modesto.

The Hag actually drifted into Modesto in the early 1950’s during some of his misspent youth.

For a brief time he worked as truck driver, short order cook as well as other odd jobs. At 14 he and his friend Bob Teague wandered into the FunCenter, a dive bar on Crows Landing Road, and sang a few songs for $5 and all the beer they could drink. (Imagine that happening today!!)

Merle Haggard eventually found valley native Chester Smith singing up the road at the Riverbank Club House. That’s when he realized singing country music was his calling. Not

just singing though. It was his gritty lyrics of life in the valley, surviving jail and fighting his demons that people identified with and made him a big singing star.

The Hag even pays tribute to Modesto in his song “Makeup and Faded Blue Jeans” “In downtown Modesto I was workin’ the Holiday Inn,” That refrain always rings in my head whenever

I pass the Holiday Inn on Hwy 99.

In 2017 the scores of restaurants, bars, event centers, harvest festivals and fairs will help many local musicians develop their unique sound. Maybe this bright music scene that Modesto has always been known for, will bring about someone with a similar way of interpreting life through song. But there will always be only one Merle Haggard.

If someone huge played here, I have no doubt we could sell it out. Our metal scene is very fun, supportive, and I strongly encourage you to get out there. If you are at home and playing your metal, practicing out of the garage, come on out. We will get you on some shows and join in on the fun. Or attend a local metal show. Come up and say Hi. See what we are all about. We will welcome you with horns up.

Hpmk, (Horror P*rn Machete Koks) is a newer band onto the scene. These dudes formed in early spring of 2014 and had their very

first show at the Workshop in Ceres. We’ve seen a lot more of them recently. With Dustin Kelley now on Vocals, Guitarist Kyle Oldham, Bassist Chris Velasquez and Michael Potter on Drums, they bring you metal and old school punk. I’d like to recognize and give a shot out to Potter.

He has just recently put on a coat and blanket drive to help with the needy in Modesto. He runs sound at a lot of our local metal shows and is just an all-around good person who lends a helping hand wherever he can. He’s happy to help out bands with missing members and always volunteers his time to the metal community.

A huge thing we all want to see is our friend, guitarist and vocalist Abraham Guerrero, come home. He’s been in a San Francisco hospital for some time now and we are rooting for a complete recovery. He plays in a band called Brutal Innocence out of Los Banos. He is well loved in

our community. We shall celebrate and throw him a metal show with his favorite Modesto bands when he comes home.

We have a local metal show this month. It’s Dave Bell, Bassist from Nothing But Loser’s 32nd Birthday. The party is on Sat. Jan. 14th at The Spinnaker Lounge. Bands to be performing are Nothing But Losers, Sworn To The Black, Stigmurder and Perfect Nightmare. The special feature entertainment for the evening will be a local all-star lineup playing a Korn Tribute.

INTER There are many of us that think about this all

of the time. Many times we view it through the lens of history and it may magnify or shrink our ideas. Sometimes we have to have a fresh view and mix things up a lot.

When my phone rings, the name “B.V. Bridges” comes up, and on the other end of the call is Reggie Rucker. Reggie is the innovative founder of Engaged by Reggie Rucker, a social media and PR company. I first met Reggie when he was a hip-hop artist and was nominated for a MAMA (Modesto Area Music Association) Award. He even had a cool video and owned it. Years later, Reggie is even more innovative and he is shaking things up in a different way, looking at Modesto with a fresh perspective and taking us in new directions.

He was celebrated by the Modesto Bee’s 20 under 40 campaign.

After graduating from Washington University in St. Louis, Reggie eventually found his professional footing in 2008 with Republic Marketing creating brand messages and effective campaigns. He is known as the “social media guy” and that title is well deserved. I have had the pleasure of working with him on a variety of fun projects. He is changing the game, creating new events, blazing trails and pushing our community to think bigger and fly our flag higher and louder. He is the founder of Modesto Fashion Week, of which ModestoView was proud to support and more great ideas are on the way. Ever well-dressed and armed with mobile devices, let’s meet Reggie.

ModestoView: How did you land here as a hip hop artist after graduating from Washington in St. Louis?

Reggie Rucker: I actually grew up here for the most part. I moved to Modesto from Alameda, CA in the 5th grade, and started messing around with music in high school with some buddies. At college, all that was on my mind was getting back home to create more music. I think I always appreciated how hip-hop artists represented for their hometowns. At the time, it was Nelly putting St. Louis on the map. That was a large part of what drew me to St. Louis, along with the Cardinals being hot with Mark McGwire breaking home run records, and the Rams being the “Greatest Show On Turf.” I saw how this sort of cultural explosion could be so powerful for a city, so it’s something I wanted to create for Modesto.

MV: What’s wrong with Modesto?

RR: I would argue at the core is that we have an imbalance in our population where we lack enough 25-40 year-old college educated people without children to really propel this community to the next level in minor and more meaningful ways. This is a population that has the

right amount of time, energy, optimism, creativity, naivete, fearlessness, disposable income, and connectedness to make world-changing things happen. They’re young enough to not have been beaten down by what’s “possible” in this world, and don’t have family demands on their time or finances that restricts the type of risks they can take. To be clear, this isn’t to say we don’t have any people like this, and it’s not to say that people who don’t fit this demographic can’t have the same impacts. But, I’d argue that this demographic is best suited to really push our economy and culture to another level, and if we find ourselves doing more to attract this under-represented demographic, we would see exponential improvements in our overall quality of life.

MV: What’s right with Modesto?

RR: The people. The people like Chris Murphy (ModestoView) and Chris Ricci (X Fest) and Andrea and Jerome Murray (Modesto On Ice), and Sam Pierstorff (Ill List) and Kate Trompetter (Mod Shop) and I could go on FOREVER listing bright, visionary people who just go and make things happen. These are the people that keep me hopeful about our future, and proud of our present, and confident that our destiny is one of greatness.

MV: How do we blow up our stereotypes?

RR: There are two parts to this. There’s an internal perception that we have to address by just connecting more of our residents to what’s great about our community. Rather than the “haves and have nots” we have the “dos and do nots.”

The people who are connected to and participate in our community offerings love it here. If you’ve even slightly been paying attention, the holiday season in Modesto has just been non-stop really cool stuff. From Mod Shop to Rockin’ Holidays to Ill List to productions at the Gallo Center to ice skating to fun-runs and so on. But, there are still too many people that are just not connected, and so to the extent that we can bring them in to what already exists, and create even more cool stuff,

we’ll eventually break free from our self-esteem issues.

The second is external, where we are only national news for tragedy – murders, mall fights, etc. And, because of our self-perception, too many of us are too quick to in a way take pride in our tragedies, as almost to internalize them so nobody else can make us feel bad about it first.

So, to the extent that we can be intentional about making national news for positive stuff, and give people something to hang their hats on that is easy to boast about rather than a list of “you had to be there,” to appreciate it, we can win this battle.

MV: What would you tell a young professional if they asked you about moving to Modesto?

RR: Be ready and willing to create. It takes a little bit of effort to get the most out of this town. You’re not going to just step through your front door, walk down the street, and find something you love on every corner. We just don’t have the population to support 10 different ethnic foods on every block, or a mall with high-end retailers in every quadrant of the city. But, if there’s something you want to exist here, you can make it happen. And, if you’re willing to pick up the ModestoView and look at the calendar, you can find more than enough to entertain you until your hearts content. And, if you’re willing to seek out and connect with the people doing all the really cool stuff in this community, it’ll change your life and you’ll experience a community like you couldn’t experience any other in the world.

MV: Fashion Week was a big success and engaged a whole new segment of our community. What made you the happiest about fashion week?

RR: Not compromising on the vision. There were times where it would have been easier to MV: It’s January and we have ice-skating in go smaller and do less. But, we had a vision downtown, what has this done for our downtown and we fought to see it come all the way to culture? life. RR: Wow, it’s literally every audience you can think of. I’ve been working with Modesto Symphony Orchestra, which has a mature audience, to X Fest, skewing to a younger but aging adults, to Modesto On Ice really focusing a lot of families and teens and new adults.

Maybe even a question mark blended with an exclamation point. (I think that this was called an “Interrobang” back in the 70s) This year more than ever begs the question about what will happen, what may happen and my favorite of all, what could happen.

Modesto will be the new Saudi Arabia.

WISH: We could find a solution to the problem of homeless mentally ill in Modesto. MAMA MAMA-looking to the future.

How many of you have made New Year’s resolutions? How many of you plan on keeping them? We are looking to the future of our local music and art scene and we want to help you all develop and grow.

Over the last few weeks, we have been looking over the MAMAnees from this last year to see what little things they could do to make a bigger impact. What we have seen is that it is not a lack of talent or effort that is holding most of our artists back. It is not even the lack of local venues. Two things seem to be the case time and again.

Most of our local performers do not have any merchandise and most of those who do, have no online store for fans to buy what they have to offer. These are both easy fixes, but are necessary for the artists and our music scene as a whole to do more than survive, for it to Thrive.

Social media is expanding like the universe after the big bang. How do you as an entertainer keep up with it all and give the best online experience and grow your fanbase? Well, every entertainer today should have at least Face-

book, Twitter, Instagram and a Youtube channel. Make sure your content is easy to find and control your message. Keep your events updated and post regularly. If you don’t have your own website at least set up a Bandcamp page. The more you do the better position you will be in to advance to the next level.

You do not need to break the bank to have something to sell to your fans. Buttons, stickers and patches are all inexpensive ways to promote. If you do not have the money to go into the studio, we suggest giving a few bucks to the sound guy to record your show off the board.

This way you have something for your fans to listen to, share with their friends, and more important something to help you book more gigs.

So take the time to put your promotional engine in order; link your social networks together. Make sure people can find you not just online but when you performing live.

Work on having not just merchandise at your shows but online (remember people are paying to advertise you).

Greg: We had a film, a feature about the writer Charles Bukowski, lose its option with a production company down in LA. The day after we got the bad news we went right to work on The Last Alleycat, a project we originally hoped to do for around $10,000. We didn’t want to waste another two years waiting around for nothing.

Mark had been playing around with a screenplay blending an unproduced play with his own experiences as a cyclist. It was a lean script,

by Middagh Goodwin Northern California Second Annual Cosplay Award Show returns January 7th to the Historic West Side Theatre in downtown Newman CA. The NorCal Cosies encompass a mini pop culture convention during the day along with a red-carpet cosplay awards show.

The Cosie-Con is Newman’s own Pop-Culture Convention. There will be vendors, artists and special guests including Ava Kolker(American Horror Story/Girl Meets World) and James Weston(Matrix-Reloaded/Transformers Dark of the Moon.) Additionally, there will be panels on bullying, cosplaying, crafting and special

performances by Spotlight Dance and Powers Dance and Choreography. There will be something for fans of comic books, cosplay, fantasy and science fiction.

The NorCal Cosies is Northern California’s only Red-Carpet Awards show. There are 10 categories ranging from child to professional.

James Weston and Ava Kolker will be co-hosting the Awards Show. The finalists have been narrowed down to the top 3 and the winner in each category will be chosen by the audience.

Mindless Imagination Studios will be filming and live streaming this year’s event.

Last Year the Award Show sold out and over the day about 800 people attended the minicon. Expectations are for this year’s event to meet or exceed those numbers. So make your plans, dress up and come out and spend the day at this great family friendly event.

Hope you all survived the hollidaze and came back reinvigorated with plenty of New Year’s resolutions to catapult us into a brighter, optimistic new year. I myself am still working on last year’s resolutions and cannot bring myself to face the new one quite yet, yes I am a procrastinator but I like to think of myself as a person that needs more time than most people to adjust to change, contemplate things and ah show up late! Well with that said plenty of things goin’ down in the Motown downtown in the New Year Blue Monday Invitational Jam returns to

the Barkin’ Dog Grill this Jan 9th with Ultra Lounge, with special guest Prince tribute with Tim Allen on piano and vocals and Conrad Johnson on bass and vocals from the Before Dawn Band. They will do a set of Prince’s hits. We will be playing everything from straight ahead Jazz, funk, Latin, Rhythm and Blues and yes some POP with special guests sitting in for dancing and listening. The band is a super group of all the best players in the area with 7-piece house Band hosting. The Blue Monday Band features: lead vocalist, guitar and bass player Dave Sousa, Johnny Valdes guitar,

Tim Allen bass, vocals, Dave Hawkes on drums, Eric Benson & Pat Governor on keys, and horn section: Andrew Rosenblum Sax, trumpet, and Jamie Dubberly trombone. Hello everyone! Welcome to 2017. This big world keeps spinning and the music never stops. For those of you who know what’s up and like to set a tone for your year starting on day one, I invite you to head out to the Delta on January 1 first to see one of the best bands around: Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood at the Rusty Porthole for this rad Sunday afternoon party at the Rusty Porthole in Bethel island.

On the 6th my friend and MAMA award nominee Terrie Londee with B-4 Dawn Band will be shaking up the Vintage Lounge in Turlock with their mix of Blues, R&B, Funk and Classic Rock. It’s a party when they show up, so you should too.

On the 13th in Modesto, Rob Hill Band will be down at the Barkin’ Dog playing their Jazzy Blues music for you. Or if you feel like smelling that mountain air, the Poorhouse Millionaires Duo along with Tiffany Rose will be at the Waterwheel Pizza and Pub in Sonora.

Either way, you can’t lose.

On the 14th I am excited to announce that The Poorhouse Millionaires will be at the Knights Ferry Saloon. This is going to be the debut of our new 5 piece band. It’s going to be pretty cool and I hope you can make it.

The last show I want to tell you about is an annual tradition on the west coast, every January Mark Hummel’s Harmonica Blowout brings a great big lineup of some of the best harp players in the world along with an all-star backing band. I have been to this several times and even got to open the show once. This year’s line-up is just as star studded as you would expect, boasting Duke Robillard among their ranks.

You can catch them Saturday the 21st at the Harris Center for the Arts in Folsom or Sunday the 22nd at Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz. Worth the drive!

As always on Thursday nights, you can jam with Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous mood at the Garlic Brothers in Stockton or with David Dow at the Barkin’ Dog in Modesto.

It is only when we feel like a victim and blame others for a bad situation that we end up feeling hopeless. But when we are motivated by a sense of self-directedness and hope, life begins to change for the better. We may seek support from family and friends. A social network can offer help as well. We may re-evaluate priorities, set new goals and develop new skills.

Instead of complaining and lamenting we can get involved in making positive changes, which benefit not only ourselves but our communities as well.

FIT 2017 The Year of the Bicycle & New Store Fun Sport Bikes

by Efren Martinez his may be the year of the Rooster accordT ing to the Chinese New Year, but I’ve got my own Zodiac Signs to get me moving: Swim, Bike, Run. In 2015, I celebrated the “Year of the Run”, that was a very fast year for me. In 2016, I celebrated the “Year of the Swim”, that year was all wet! This year, I’ll be celebrating “Year of the Bike” and with good reason. This May, the Amgen Tour returns to our beautiful city. Yes, 2017 will be a very exciting year for bicycle enthusiasts. In summer, my friends at Fun Sports Bikes will be opening up their new location at 1533 E. Briggsmore in Modesto.

According to my buddy Brian, the new Fun Sport Bikes will have 14,000 square feet of with everything that has to do with bicycling. As Brian said, “We are not changing too much from our Mchenry store. Excited to add more inventory to better serve families, recreational riders and serious riders. We are most excited about setting ourselves to serve our county for years to come.” Just recently my friends over

in Oakdale expanded their bicycle shop as well adding of 1250sq feet to their store. This allowed them to move the entire repair shop and storage space to this new area which is a plus because they now have more product to show, with a new expanded bike fit area that includes a lounge for cyclists to gather, sit, plan their rides, sip coffee, eat snacks, and relax before and after their rides. Another bike shop that is centrally located for a quick fix is the fairly new Economy Bicycle Shop located at 937 Coffee Road in Modesto. They strictly specialize in repairs and tune-ups. So if it’s a quick fix you’re looking for, this may be the shop for you.

Another alternative is the old school stand by bicycle shop, World of Wheels” at 1544 Standiford Ave in Modesto. Don’t let the word “Old school” fool you, the folks over there may be the most experienced in cycling with their long history serving Modesto. Friends, regardless of what bicycle shop you decide to use, I invite you to join me this year, “The year of the Bike,” for your healthy lifestyle in 2017.

A steady companion of many years or a new addition to the household, a dog can bring so much happiness to the new year. What most people don’t know is that many Modesto establishments have outside patios and encourage you to bring your furry friend. Harvest Moon, Barkin’ Dog Grill, Twisted Pig, Camp 4, Chefs of New York and Redwood Cafe all have these outdoor patio areas that are completely pup friendly. Whenever my family brings our Goldendoodle, Ali, out with us, we have a stellar time. Beyond the fact that Ali is the cutest dog in the world, people love to approach us and pet her, which leads to great acquaintances.

It is also great fun to take your dog to less urban areas of Modesto. Some extremely accessible dog-friendly places are Dry Creek, Tuolumne River Trail, Virginia Corridor Trail

and Knights Ferry. There are also multiple dog parks in Modesto, one of which is right off of the Virginia Corridor Trail! One of my favorite spots this time of year is the completely deserted Pinecrest Lake. Though it’s impossible to hike the whole lake during winter, there’s still a ton of open space for your pup to roam.

If you’re already a summer in P-Crest lover, I highly recommend planning a trip in the winter.

A dear friend of my family, Darcie Kent, caught wind that my theme for the month was dog friendly establishments in the valley.

She was excited to tell me that her vineyard in Livermore is fully dog friendly and all ages!

Between the location, Darcie’s amazing art gallery, and (for those of you over 21 years) the wine tasting, it is a highly recommended outing.
