ments, where you think you have solved all of the world’s problems? I kind of have a lot of them, but so quickly they are gone and I wish I had written them down. Who knows how many thoughts like this disappear? I was watching the Space X launch on Dec 22 and just stared in wonderment. This is what happens when people think big, think smart and really do things that are game changers. That is what I want to do for 2018. It is not about simple resolutions to be more on time, which I need to do, or not take on too much, which I also frequently do, but to try to better capture those moments of inspiration that lead me to something way better. One of the cool things about January is that it gives you time to decompress from the 2017 whirlwinds that literally blew us here before we were ready. And the other cool thing is

that there are less activities pulling at us so we can get our stuff together. 2018 could not have come fast enough. We have all been through so much in 2017, that we really need to make 2018 count and set the wheels in motion for our next chapters. This is the time to figure out what you want to be when you grow up. I struggle with this all the time. Do I spend more time trying to be a better musician, or try to be a better artist as I rarely draw like I used to? How do we sharpen our tools and take the time to be really good at something. Is being mediocre at many things OK too? So many conflicts, but this is the time to think about those things. When you get right down to it, finding those things you love to do, that your friends and family also love to do is some pretty good guidance. Thank goodness my family likes music, art, food and travel. But I will be a better musician by the end of the year. We need to do the same Modesto. We need to tell our story, celebrate our history, and use this to build a future. What do we want to be when we grow up? As much as we talk about a vibrant downtown, we still struggle to make it so. How do we deal with the vagrancy and mentally ill, (not to be confused with homeless that are actually trying to get by and need a hand) so that people want to be out and about on our streets walking. How do we light up our city so it is safe and welcoming. We have an

This is my mission with ModestoView, to bring these ideas forward, provide a platform for the exchange of those ideas and hopefully enough of us will decide that a vibrant and culturally active Modesto is the kind of place that will make us strong for the future. We need to engage the smart, creative and energetic people for the common good. We can do this. Also, please tell me what you like or don’t like about ModestoView so we can make it better. Let’s look at the world around us and bring the best ideas here, and work together. Let’s make sure that we say no to Amazon Prime once in a while and shop local and support each other as when it is all said and done, we have family and friends and the stuff doesn’t matter. Civil rights and labor activist Dolores Huerta to speak at Martin Luther King Commemoration The keynote speaker for the 24th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration is Dolores Huerta, an influential labor activist and leader of the Chicano civil rights movement who co-founded the National Farmworkers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers. The evening also features the presentation of the 2018 Martin Luther King Legacy Award to attorneys Jacq M. Wilson and Jacque Wilson, founders of the Advocates for Justice (AFJ) program which provides pro bono legal representation and assistance and ﬁghts for social, economic & criminal justice. It will be an amazing evening and will feature a Q & A following. The program celebrates the life and legacy of King, and it is open to the public and admission is free.

The New Year has arrived, and time to remind artists if you haven’t signed up for the Stanislaus Artist Open Studio Tour, the deadline is January 15. Applications email is openstudio. stanislaus@gmail.com Maps for the April 7 and 8 Open Studio weekend go on sale in March, which will have all the participating artists, and list this year’s purchase prize give away original art. Purchase award finalists works purchased for 2018 include Don Hall, Linda Knoll, Lorraine Nilson, Lori Sala and Henrietta Sparkman. I’ll be on the map again this year, fun event to come visit, meet local artists in the work space. FotoModesto will come up all next month in various spots downtown. Photographer Rebecca Harvey will get a head start at Barkin’ Dog, as featured artist for the January and February Art Walk. Ed Cesena art will be up at Barkin Dog through January 17. Valetino Alexander will be the featured artist at Ralston’s Goat during Art Walk January 18. Visit all the Art Walk venues to check out what’s going on with local artists, find some original art values to go on your walls. “Abstracts, Figures and Impressions” show opens in January at the Mistlin Gallery. Title tells the tale of what’s on display. I get to be a featured CCAA member artist in the front window area for the month of January, but will also have some paintings in this members show, with all art on display for sale. Fuzio’s Candied Bacon Do Good Old Fashioned By Chris Murphy

Have you ever had a drink that got better with every sip? I am not kidding. I did not want this drink to end, and since it was in the midafternoon, I did not ask for a 2nd one. But boy oh boy am I going back for another one. Gina Lopes of Fuzio Bistro in downtown Modesto teamed up with our friends at Do Good Distillery for a new take on a cocktail classic. At the core of this drink is the Do Good California Bourbon Whiskey. This is a delicious way to start. And here is were it gets interesting. Let’s start:

Bacon, cooked and sautéed in maple syrup and brown sugar and then skewered. Next, take a rocks glass loaded with ice and a splash of bitters. Pour 1.5 oz of Do Good California Bourbon Add 2.0 oz of maple syrup Add a splash of soda water Top with the candied bacon and enjoy

Back before the prohibition, a town wasn’t reNow friends, this is where the magic begins. Sip a few drinks of this tasty cocktail. The first aroma and the taste will take you away. When you have room, insert the bacon and stir and then sip. It gets better as it melts and the candied bacon flavors the drink and the drink flavors the bacon. As you get to the end, you can start eating the old fashioned soaked bacon and before you know, it is over. Gone. Amazing. We think you will like it. We live in exciting times, as we are going back to our roots, with breweries opening in the Central Valley on a regular basis. And we’ve been waiting for this particular tap room to open for 2.5 years! We met them at Central Valley Brewfest in 2015, and here we finally stand, excited to share them with you. Tom & Shelly Lucas come from a long line of farmers specializing in dairy cattle and almonds. Looking for a way to link their farm to new opportunities, they decided to branch out into beerdom. They tip their hat to Tom’s grandpa in the taproom’s interior design. He started farming in 1938, so you’ll see the number “38” nestled among black and white photos

and an old tailgate. The taproom celebrates hometown ag while still looking modern and sleek. The best décor? Their taps are numbered with old cattle tags! Their Almond Brown is made from local almonds, and their spent grain feeds their cattle. It’s a beautiful cycle of life, bringing the farm direct to you in the most delicious way possible: a pint! Our favorite was the barrel-aged, which is going FAST. When it runs out, we suggest you try the Vanilla Bean Milk Stout (tastes as good as its name!) or the Fall of ’38, a mesmerizing mix of mandarin and cinnamon. Their grand opening weekend is January 12th-14th. There will be live music and food vendors!

New Beginnings and New Teamwork By Chris Murphy

John Surla was our very first ChefView interview when I started ModestoView. It is only fitting that we start here again as we head into 2018 as there is a great new beginning. John has been a leader in the Modesto culinary community and he commitment to amazing food as well as supporting community events and donating his time is wonderful and appreciated. As he expanded into Hilmar and plans a new place, John was looking for the perfect executive chef to take the main Surla’s Restaurant to the next level. Chef Vincent Alvarado, one of John’s peers in culinary skill from his history at Dewz, and also part of Dan Costa’s Chef ’s Menu entrée program became interested and a new amazing team was formed. There are exciting things happening in this kitchen. Chef Vincent brings a new look at some of Surla’s traditional dishes. “I am very interested in being able to try new flavors and bring my tastes to an Asian style as well as fill out the menu with some of my favorites that people will love” explains Chef Vincent. As we watched him in the kitchen preparing a beautiful Lamb Shank, you can see that his perfection and introspection in the kitchen is a great match to Chef John’s outgoing personality and style. the menu is going to match. Diners will be very pleased with the new menu in January, many of the new dishes debuted at the New Year’s Eve banquet. They want dining to become an event, a destination experience and really want to make it so people want to go eat out more. It has to really be special and something you want to do again. Chef Vincent is excited to explore more of the fresh fish side of the menu and looks forward to the new teamwork. Chef John explains “we need to make sure that we are developing really good people at our restaurants and build on our knowledge of what Modesto wants and the amazing supply of local ingredients that make this a destination for dining. We want people to go out and eat local. Both of these Chefs started getting serious about cooking early on, Chef Vincent watching Julia Child and getting serious about becoming a professional when he was 18 and training at the Columbia College culinary school. Chef John started cooking when he was in 1st grade for the family, watched Yan Can Cook and his culinary school skills have taken him to Disney’s California Adventure at the Mondavi Winery Restaurant as well as Skywalker Ranch. These chefs are not all serious business. Chef John plays bass in his band the Jam Session and

keeps the hang loose in this business. As Chef Vincent rallies the kitchen team, I asked them what their guilty late night food pleasure was and Chef Vincent said it was Mr. T’s donuts and Chef John likes a Del Taco Chicken Burrito. As we taste the amazing treats at Surla’s, I ask our traditional question; Beatles or Stones. Chef John was all Beatles and Chef Vincent was Stones. You can see how this new teamwork is going to complement each part. We expect great things. We agree with the Chefs, we need to eat local, support our local issues and support those restaurants like Surla’s that give back to the community. This is how it works. AUTHOR Migrant Mother: The Record In early December, 2016, I received a call from Jack Souza, Artistic Director of the Prospect Theater Project, about acting, singing, and playing guitar in the second run of Ken White’s Migrant Mother. Swayed by my own need to get out and perform, as I had not done that in many years, I anxiously agreed to take the part of Doc Guitar. The task of being Doc meant learning nine, ten or maybe twelve songs in about five weeks. As I heard some of these 1920s pop, not-so-charttopping “hits,” it seemed each had an uncovered truth I hadn’t known without the context of Ken’s composition. As his words came off the page and onto the stage, the songs started to present their depths. Even the songs that had grown tired since the revival of Dust Bowl and Depression-era music, found their way into some new understanding, not only for me, but for the cast and crew, as well as audience member, Don Setaro: studio engineer, producer, live sound wizard, and all-around music enthusiast. By the final show, we had made the bond that art makes in collaboration. We were all saddened to see the show end, as must they all. But Migrant Mother would live on, so I was about to find out. Don caught the final performance of the Prospect Theater run and approached me after the curtain call about making a record of the music within the play. Jack’s openness to the new arrangements is really what gave the songs the ability to transform. Learning songs of a particular style is fine, but the songs selected by Ken have now been allowed to become what I hoped the audience might have heard while I was banging away alone on my dad’s old Gibson. They’re not like what you may have heard before, but they play true to their origin. The songs of Migrant Mother are now archived in their full expression, and will soon be available to add to your collection. This project has been a labor of love, from the first keystroke on Ken’s computer to the fading notes of its soundtrack. It has been a journey that reconnected me with my hometown, my family, the vast extended network of loved ones in the theater, and music communities of the Central Valley. It reminded me of how close we all really are. It connects what it means to know Truth, and questions that we do. And, like everything in life, it cannot have been done alone. Time Frame: Songs from the Play Migrant Mother is not only a stand-alone record, it is an ascending “Thank You” to Dorothea Lange for stopping, for seeing truly, and for helping us all

I read recently that the Oxford Dictionary declared “youthquake” the word of 2017. I have no idea what this word means, but I do have a very good idea of two predictions I’d like to make about this New Year: 1. The word of the year on the Modesto music scene will be “StringQuake”; and 2. This stunning world-music trio will be the most innovative group you’ll hear at the Gallo Center all year. It all starts with electric lever harpist Amelia Romano, one of the most fantastic players I’ve ever worked with, and who even inspired me

to attend a harp course after seeing what she can do with the instrument. Her music follows a path all its own, but is influenced by folk, Latin, gypsy & jazz; and her firsthand experiences in South Africa and the cultural hotbed of San Francisco. You’ll have two chances to fall under Amelia’s spell this month. Saturday night 1/20, her more jazzy trio All That Bad will be featured over at Moon & Sixpence Music And Art House. Also featuring Matt Ebisuzaki on trumpet and Tim Renner on upright bass, the ATB Trio forges each composition from multiple perspectives, passing melodies and improvisation from player to player. METAL Happy New Year! My New Year resolution is to go out and occupy a venue, support a musician. Music is good for the soul, my soul. Modesto area metal was on fire this past year, with local bands making music videos, writing and producing albums and touring up and down California opening for nationals. I expect to see more and to keep the scene alive and growing. Stigmurder is working on new music to be shown soon. Sworn To The Black is working on song four and five of what will be a six track EP. “Once again we’re doing a variety of the signature Sworn Groove and Death/Speed style but with a little more brutality in our new material” says Sworn. Nothing But Losers has their first full length album to be released this spring. The anticipation for this album to come out is killing me. I can’t wait! A new artage dawns in downtown Modesto By Chris Murphy

There is no fun in the world without reinvention. Some chapters have to close so that new ones begin. Many of our stories are the same. When I was in high school my culture came from the Bay Area, Berkeley in particular. I moved away for 20 years and returned with new eyes. We need to keep bringing new people into our artistic and creative community so maybe in the future people won’t have to leave to rediscover Modesto. Having done the MAMA Awards for nearly 20 years now, we have seen new musicians and artists that were not even born yet becoming the new driving force of our creative community. We need to embrace these fresh ideas and help support the new creative spaces. You never know where the next hit song, or artistic movement will come from. It could come from a new space in downtown Modesto housing the re-birth of The Shire Community Space. As the great stories go, most good ideas began in a garage so let’s meet to co-founders of The Shire; Theo Souza & Andrew Cardoza. ModestoView: Where did you grow up and what inspired you to create The Shire? Theo and Andrew: We both grew up in Modesto and have known each other since we were four years old! As teenagers, we were constantly looking for something to do besides watching TV and playing video games. We found ourselves making trips out to the Bay Area for music concerts, art shows and workshops. After a while, we both moved away from Modesto to live in other cities where strong communities already existed. We became involved with some really cool organizations and were inspired by how these shared spaces brought people together. Eventually we moved back to Modesto, but with these new experiences and a vision of what a city COULD be, we set out to create the kind of community we had been looking for all along. MV: How did the Shire begin? Shire: We wanted to build a space that could

The only problem was that we didn’t have the money to open up a proper space. But we did have a garage! So with the help of some friends, we transformed our dusty garage into a vibrant community space! MV: What will make the New Shire so special? Shire: The same things that made our original space so special: it was a place that was built and organized by the members of our community. If you wanted to put on a music show or display art in a gallery, you could do it at The Shire! If you wanted to teach a class or start a meet-up group, you could do it at The Shire! In just our first year alone we hosted over 80 community events! We created many opportunities for people to connect over music, art, skillshare and food. We know that as we transition into our downtown space we will continue to operate in this way, creating a space that supports people’s passions and talents while building relationships within our community. MV: What did you learn from running The Shire Version 1.0?

Shire: We’ve both learned a lot over the past two years. In our first space, we learned what the needs of our community were, especially having an all-ages music venue for local and touring bands to play in. In the beginning, it was just the two of us taking booking requests and coordinating with artists and instructors. But as time went on, we grew to six board members, dozens of volunteers, and community partners who helped take The Shire from a small DIY space in a garage to a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts organization! MV: What will be different in Version 2.0? Shire: Well, the new space will have more than one bathroom so that’s a plus! But really, a bigger space means more music shows with better sound and lighting equipment, a larger art gallery, a café and kitchen for food and drinks and a community room for workshops, meet-up groups or just hanging out. Basically, a bigger version of what we had going on in the garage. Our scheduled will be filled throughout the week with fun things for people to do in Modesto. We’re excited to watch our community grow as more people get involved in our new space! MV: Who will be able to use the space? Shire: Our goal is to create a space that is inclusive and accessible to everyone. Admission

to all-ages music shows and workshops will continue to be affordable, which is especially important for teenagers and young adults who don’t have a lot of cash. We’ll be hosting a variety of music genres and artistic mediums, as well as a wide range of classes and workshops that appeal to most everyone in our community. We want to create as many opportunities for people to meet each other, grow together and support each other around positive events and activities. MV: What kind of people would be interested in The Shire Community Space? Shire: The Shire will have something for everyone. Whether you’re a teenager, student, young adult, parent, artist, musician, poet, or anything in-between, you’ll be able to attend fun and inspiring events and meet people who you never knew existed in your city! The Shire will be a space for connecting, learning and free expression with not only the people in Modesto but in surrounding areas as well. MV: What are you raising money for? Shire: We’ve acquired an amazing building on H Street in downtown Modesto but it needs a lot of work. We’ve started a crowdfunding campaign to help raise $35,000 to cover hiring contractors, paying for permits, licenses and insurance. We need to build restrooms, install fire exits, HVAC, etc., basically bringing the

building up to code. We’ve teamed up with an amazing architect and are working with local contractors to begin this process. MV: What are you most excited about with this new opportunity. Shire: The Shire was a little gem tucked away in a neighborhood and was an important space for the people who knew about it. Now that we’re moving downtown we’ll be much more accessible to the public and even more people will have the opportunity to be a part of our space. We’ve had so many bands from around the country play The Shire and were surprised when we heard that Modesto was their favorite city to play in! We’ve even met people from the Bay Area who travelled to Modesto to watch a show in our garage! Having a proper music venue with continue to draw creative people to our area and help build a positive vision of our city. MV: How do we engage all ages of the art community to connect to make art a more vital part of our city life? Shire: The most important thing we’ve learned is to invest in young artists and musicians. Some of the most successful events we hosted were organized by teenagers. And some of the most promising artists and bands aren’t even old enough to drink! They were able to meet and collaborate with older artists and learn from their experiences. When given the chance, these young artists will rise to the occasion and are able to realize their full potential! By having a creative space with little to no barriers for expression, we can continue to inspire artists of all ages, making art a bigger part of our city life. MV: What type of cultural event do you think is missing in Modesto? Shire: There are a lot of cultures that are still under-represented in Modesto, so it would be hard to say that just one event is missing. We’re starting to see a shift in our city’s downtown culture that more accurately represents our diverse community. We have many people of many backgrounds that need cultural events to help make Downtown Modesto feel more like home. As this town continues to grow and change, we hope that we can help our culturally-rich community find opportunities to use public space to better define our city’s identity. MV: How do we change the negative perceptions about Modesto? Shire: There is so much creative energy here in Modesto. The real challenge is finding a space that brings that energy together. If people can’t find that here they move away to places like the Bay Area, L.A. and Portland that already have

robust art and music scenes. With the Shire we aim to create the type of space that gives creative people what they need to thrive as artists. We want to make Modesto the kind of place that people come to, instead of leave from. MV: If you could host the ultimate event at The Shire, what would it be? Shire: We’d love to re-create our Friendsgiving Potluck! That was by far one of the most magical events at The Shire. A lot of people met each other for the first time that night. We shared recipes, reflected on The Shire’s first year and looked to the future for what was to come. For us it was the moment that we saw our community as one big family. We’d love to host another potluck in our new space and add even more people to our family tree! MV: and finally, our signature question …..Beatles or Stones? Shire: Stones, duh! Do you see that spark? Is it lightning? Is a lightbulb exploding?

No, it was another great idea that will help us spark a new era in our city. We can’t let up. It seems like we try some of the same things, maybe get frustrated when things don’t work the way they should, but one thing we do know, is to never stop trying something new. You know the story about Thomas Edison’s quote about the invention process for the light bulb? Edison, when queried by a reporter about the seemingly incredible difficulties associate with his work on the lightbulb rebutted, “I have not failed 700 times. I’ve succeeded in proving 700 ways how not to build a lightbulb.” It is no different today. Inspiration, perspiration and some flashes of brilliance are needed. So here we are Modesto, at the threshold of a new year, loaded with experience and we are all set to try something new. But what exactly? What Downtown is missing is retail, so one idea I had is use one of the buildings and have a rotating consignment store, one month sell old books, baked goods, then clothing and art. Maybe have different high schools run it. The kids will learn valuable retail skills and money goes back to school. Instead of the cheerleading squad having a bake sale in front of a grocery store, they will have use of the space. A football team runs an ice cream shop and so on!

The Cosies have become such a fun event and helps to join together the Cosplay Community not just in the 209 but in Northern California. Celebrating Three years at the West Side Theatre in downtown Newman California on Saturday, January 13th. The day is kicked off with a FREE mini-convention with 30 Artists and Vendors, panels, the first Geek Fashion Show of the Year and special themed performances by Spotlight Dance Company. The Con is FREE and goes 10am-4pm. By 6 pm the venue will have been transformed back into a dinner theatre, and the Red Carpet Award Show takes place with all the glitz and glitter that you would expect. The contestants have already been narrowed down to the Top 3 in 9 categories. Those in attendance are the academy and will vote for their favorite. The Cosplay photographer is the only award that is prejudged(ModestoViews very own MJ Mangano is a finalist). Come out early dressed as your favorite characters from comic books or video games and then dress up in your finest for the Awards Show. All proceeds from the Cosies will be donated this year to Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust.

After the loss of Sam Shepard this past summer, CSC hosted a night to celebrate the late Pulitzer prize winning playwright where the community was able to share energy with others who have been impacted by the man and his body of work through personal stories and readings of his texts. It is a new year, and with it, we all seem to make Resolutions. Maybe work out more, go on a diet, reconnect with old friends or family, go back to school. Unfortunately, most never follow through on these. I would like to challenge everyone who reads the ModestoView to go to an extra local show a month. That would be over 150,000 additional attendees a month. 150,000 supporting local musicians, restaurants, bars and venues. At an average of $5 per person that would come to a 9 Million Dollar influx supporting local musicians and businesses. What an easy and fun way to create and build a vibrant arts community. Need some ideas of what to do? On the First and Third, Wednesday the Poorhouse Millionaires and Felicia Aleman host a show Ralston’s Goat combining music and comedy to create an incredible night out. Every Sunday Queen Bean host the areas longest running open mic featuring some very talented up and

comers along with many of Modesto’s best players. Bauhaus features acoustic music every Tuesday Night and Tesetti’s has music on the Patio every Thursday. Modesto has live music happening every night of the week, just check out the Calendar in the back pages or online at modestoview.com for a full list of things to do. There is a new Community Music and Arts Space coming to downtown Modesto, the Shire Community Space, and they are in need of financial donations so if you are in a position to help out, please donate to this much-needed resource to the community. town. They are bringing together and giving our young artist and musicians an avenue to showcase their work. JAZZ What’s New with the Jazz & Blues View by Eric Benson

If you luv music you’re gonna love this Okay, I awoke at 3 o’clock in the morning with one of those crazy dreams that make you get out the clip board and take notes. I was thinking about the Beatles playing on tour in early days 7 days a week all night long until they returned to Liverpool seasoned and became the Beatles. On the Jazz side there are Jazz residencies in which a band picks a spot and plays for a while as happened in America in the 1950’s on with great players like Coltrane, Monk, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis and others. So I had this Idea of doing a jazz festival with the Ultra lounge band with special guests every night with 8-piece band backing them up and doing this every 3 months year round. Stay tuned. We’re gonna make it happen. Okay on to the New Year with cheers and trepidation. Out with the old and in with the new. Resolutions? Yes, I have mine that may be revised as needed when I don’t live up to them but I’m not ready to go to confession quite yet. For now it is to stay healthy and get in shape, and as Tommy Castro would say quit “all my nasty habits………I believe they’re killin’

me.” For me it is about family and friends and trying to keep the music flowing the best I can to create a scene in the downtown. Blue Monday Party on the Latin Side returns to the Barkin’ Dog Jan 8thth to the Barkin’ Dog Grill with special guests Cuban Percussionist Carlos Caro and pianist Odaly’s Caro. Hosting the jam is House band Ultra Lounge, Johnny Valdes guitar, Tim Allen bass, vocals, Dave Hawks on drums, Horns Kevin Marin, and Marty Martinez, and John Burt Sax, Jamey Duberly on Trombone, Dave Dow and you’re truly Eric Benson on keys. We will be playing some Latin, Jazz, Latin, Funk, and a little of everything else. And all Blue Monday bands are invited to come down and play a few. COMEDY Terrible Videos by Felicia Aleman Hello, hello, hello. Hope you’ve recovered from all those jingling bells, decked halls and falalalala’s. It January and it’s time to start fresh. Also, just going to put this out there--I like fruitcake, so if you have any extra hanging around, let me know... Hey, why hasn’t anyone stepped up and told me how terrible my videos are? I mean, I know they’ve been terrible, but I’m a comic and I need validation for all my feelings and I will personally blame all three of you who pay attention to this for leaving me with metaphoric lettuce in my teeth. I will not despair, I’ve decided that I’m going to step it up. I am going to quickly skim articles on the internet. I will play YouTube videos I barely pay attention to in order to absorb the information for better videos. So, I’m either going to make some monumentally amazing videos or I will bring a new level of bad. This month, I’m going to try for better audio. Last month’s video was shot in a parking lot on a busy street which didn’t work out as well as it does for the TV newscasters. Also, I may actually switch to a camera instead of an outdated cell phone.

FIT Step into Fitness in 2018 by Efren Martinez It’s the new year and I’m sure you’ve been bombarded by now with non-stop advertisements of all types of exercise equipment on sale. My advice would be to hold off before buying any kind of fitness equipment. It can be mind blowing with all the choices you have from treadmills to ellipticals and of course those silly nonsense things you stand on and twist. Seriously? Don’t waste your money on those as seen on TV’s exercise quarks. Instead save your hard earned cash and hit the stairs for free. Sure you can buy a Stairmaster for hundreds of dollars, if not more, to get a decent one but why? Here’s my thought, head off to your local school football field with a running track. Instead of running the track, hit the bleachers/stairs. Start with running up one set of stairs of the bleachers, then walk down carefully till you get the rhythm so you don’t trip and fall. After you master one side of the stadium bleachers, flip to the other side of the stadium and repeat the same workout. Remember! Always run up the bleachers, then walk down. These sudden bursts of stop and go fitness will re-ignite your “fitness twitch” that in most cases slows down to be non-existent as we age. Your fitness twitch is something that we

had when we were young teen athletes. Your fitness twitch is what gave us that ability to bust out that extra effort of energy or sprint at the finish line when most of us in the masters category have nothing left to give at the end of a race. I guess it’s just part of ageism, but just as how you can re-ignite your metabolic rate, so can you re-ignite your fitness twitch. After you’ve mastered your bleacher workout, always remember to cool down by walking the track a couple times after. Below is one of my recommended bleacher twitch igniting workouts for those who’ve reached a steady endurance workout regiment. Note! It’s important that before you start any kind of bleacher workout that you walk the bleachers a couple days prior to your bleacher workout to familiarize yourself with the stairs. 1. Jog twice around the track to warm up, rest for a minute. 2. Burst up one side of the stadium bleachers always remembering to walk down the same way you ran up. Benjamin Franklin once said, “Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every new year find you a better man”. Happy 2018! It’s the year of the dog, and who doesn’t love dogs? Even if you don’t, this is going to be a great year! A year of growth and change for me, as I am graduating high school in the Spring. During my final months in my hometown, my goal is to eat at local restaurants, spend time in our local parks, get involved in community service and of course support local artists! Whenever I come back from a weekend out of town, my go-to meal is a shrimp/avocado burrito from my favorite restaurant, Taqueria Los Compadres, located in Roseburg Square. I also am always in the mood for a strawberry/banana crepe from Deva Cafe, which sometimes

has live music. Oakdale recently opened a new skatepark in the center of their downtown! Skating is a really great way to make some friends and burn off the calories from all those local vendors! ZEN Self Restraint by Mary Layton Recently I went to visit my T’ai Chi teacher who is a 3rd Generation Grandmaster of T’ai Chi. On the wall in his living room hangs a large Chinese calligraphy of one of the most important principles of T’ai Chi : Self-Restraint. Next to the very powerful looking character of self-restraint is a poem written by Mr. Yip. I asked my teacher what it means. He showed me an English translation of it. To make it more accessible I have changed its formal language to sound more like we talk today. Here it goes : “It is better to yield in order to achieve peace. Surrender your position to gain serenity.
