I hope that you had a great holiday season and are looking forward to 2019. Time has sped by this year and I get the feeling it is going to be faster this year. Each new beginning is exciting and always a good reason to take a fresh look at everything. These winter times with family and friends are the best and it always feels like relationships are rekindled over the holidays. If you ask my wife, she would say I never plan on growing up, and that’s why we have so much fun presenting Rockin’ Holiday this year. It was a big success and we put a lot of smiles on faces and it was good for downtown business. Thanks to all that reached out to help when the Rockin’ Tree was vandalized as it means so much that people really care about these cool classic community events. (even the hubcaps!) But let’s talk tech. Last year, we were looking to create an ap for ModestoView. We asked around, and really didn’t get anywhere. So we ended up working with a template package and it is good. I have later learned that all of that technology is available right here. We are involved in a new musicians networking application called Plink. Did you know that is being coded right here in Modesto? Did you know that there is a fast growing coding and systems development industry here in Modesto? All of those things you hear about in the big cities are happening here, although on a smaller scale at a lot lower cost of living. It is time that we start

talking about the high tech developments that are happening in Modesto and how it could affect our regional economy and change our trajectory. That’s why we are taking a good look at the future this month and helping to map out how our city can build on our classic culture and make this a place that blends Classic Culture and a digital economy that will power our next generation. Hope you enjoy our futurology beginning on page 14 with an interview with tech star Phillip Lan. We need to be careful though. We can’t let tech keep us all inside and not interact with each other so even though the ap is cool, it is more fun to go out to dinner than do a Doordash. Be social as we get technical. That’s why there are new group work spaces popping up in Modesto and coffee shops and cocktail lounges are still the best places to innovate. So what is your ModestoView? What do you want Modesto to be over the next few years? There are some really good things coming, some big, some small but we want it to be good smart changes. Real change only works if we work together and really have solid teamwork. It is our local businesses that will be the catalyst for change. We get stronger if

our local business network is strong and that’s where the fabric of our community strengthens. Modesto gets better if we all get better together and most importantly, if we keep our dollars local. At ModestoView, we are “Shop Small” all year long and the teamwork we have with local businesses allow us to bring the good news of ModestoView to you each month. Please tell me what you like about ModestoView, what you don’t and how we can make this more valuable for you, your family and your business. Our goal is the same as it has always been to “Serve Civic Pride Daily”. And we hope this mission works for you and our community. We need good news, we need positive reinforcement and we need to know that we are all in this together. Thank you for reading and on behalf of my family and our amazing ViewCrew, we wish you a very Happy New Year, filled with peace, prosperity, friendship and love. Best to you, Chris Murphy Founder & Publisher – ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

His dad and mom, Nick and Whitney think he is the kid of the future too. We all have to remember that the world we are innovating is for kids like Chase and millions more around the world.

BREW VIEW

The Resilience IPA Supports the Camp Fire Relief Fund

The Camp Fire in and around Para-

dise California last month was beyond devastating, and many of our families here were affected due to loved ones living in the area. You wouldn’t think that BrewView would have anything to report on the subject but we are proud to tell you we sure do! Sierra Nevada Brewing in Chico started a domino effect in the brewing industry by brewing the Resilience Butte County Proud IPA and sharing the recipe with any other brewery who wanted it under one condition: All profits from sales of the beer go to the Camp Fire Relief Fund. From the website, “When the Camp Fire started in the hills above our Chico brewery on November 8, 2018, it soon became the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in Califor-

nia history. The fire burned more than 153,000 acres, killed at least 85 people, and destroyed more than 13,000 homes. Many of our employees and community members were severely impacted by this tragic event. We sent out the “bat signal” calling our friends in the industry, asking our suppliers to donate ingredients, asking other breweries (our competitors) to donate their time and labor costs, and asking our wholesalers and retailers to carry the beer for free. It was a big ask, and we never could have anticipated the response.” We didn’t anticipate it either! Our local breweries Last Call in Oakdale and Blaker Brewing in Ceres have answered the bat signal and are serving up pints of this while it lasts. Please stop in and raise a glass in honor of a city lost, the strength of the people rebuilding it, and the unity this event has brought to our glorious state. Why not drink AND do so for a great cause? a cocktail brag-worthy are the ingredients! Of course fresh is best, local is great, and a mish mash of flavors is what we look for, but not everyone has time to create a delicious cocktail from scratch and that’s ok! We still have the answer for you. Whether it’s laziness, lack of time to shop, or lack of creativity keeping your cocktail making skills less than par, your tastebuds don’t have to suffer for it. (Or in the case of a pregnant partner or friend, we will help you surprise them with the best mocktail they will ever consume.) Fresh Victor is located in the Sierra Foothills on Apple Hill and was founded by Ken MacKenzie and Tim Brown. Their all-natural premium juice blends are designed to be mixed with anything: your favorite liquor, wine, or even soda for a low calorie mocktail. (And before you laugh, what I miss most being pregnant is my alcohol. These

cocktail mixes do not disappoint!) They come in five flavors: Mexican Lime & Agave, Three Citrus & Mint Leaf, Poblano Heat & Wild Lime, Cactus Pear & Pomegranate, and Pineapple & Ginger Root. We tried both the Cactus Pear and Three Citrus and both were dreamy juicy drinks you’ll savor to the last drop. Fresh Victor doesn’t use artificial sweeteners, flavorings, or preservatives-yahoo! I’ve been making a virgin version of the Pomegranate Rum using Sprite instead of tonic water, but Mr. Mitchell has been enjoying using Corbin Cash Sweet Potato Vodka or Corbin Cash Sweet Potato Liqueur. There are some fantastic recipes & a list on where to buy these locally on the website www.freshvictor.com. We are sure you’ll find a favorite!

FiTness Meal is Amazing & Local!

Pictured is Brian Sherwood Photo Credit: ModestoNews.com

By Jessica L. Sule & Mick V. Rubalcava Have you ever bought a box meal from the frozen section with a yummy looking picture on it and the promise of “delicious and healthy” food inside, only to be disappointed? Yeah, us too. But, we’ve just discovered the new FiTness Meal and we are excited to tell you that things have changed! These are a new locally produced product that has just hit the market and are already making big waves. Wether you are committing to a new resolution or you are continuing or renewing a fitness journey from the past, you should check out these amazingly delicious frozen delights from Proof Smart Food and Brian Sherwood, the owner of Max Muscle in Modesto. They are so worth all the praise they have been garnering! We just had Mr. Sherwood on the ModestoNews.com Radio Show so we got to try the Carne Asada with Cilantro Chimichurri FiTness Meal and were very pleasantly surprised by several things: the flavor, the texture of the meat, the quantity of food, and the balance of nutrients. The meal comes packed in three com-

partments. The carne asada is covered in the cilantro chimichurri in the main compartment. The accompanying sides are each in their own compartments. The two sides are seasoned riced broccoli and seasoned cauliflower rice. First of all, the flavor is incredible. Big flavors from good ingredients in the chimichurri sauce carry the whole dish. You can taste the onion, cilantro, jalapeno, garlic, lemon, and lime juices all at once and its a really powerful flavor experience that has a freshness you wouldn’t expect from packaged food. We also enjoyed the riced broccoli and cauliflower, which we hadn’t tried before. The riced broccoli was more delicately seasoned with herbs and garlic, and the riced cauliflower was more spiced with flavors of turmeric, cumin, onion, and lime. These sides paired really well with the main dish, the carne asada. The carne asada was moist and very tender. We couldn’t believe it came out of a microwave! From the first bite to the last, every morsel was hot, juicy, so tender, and so incredibly flavorful. We think the

spice is just right- though the chimichurri was made with jalapenos and we generally prefer food on the spicier side, this dish managed to balance in that sweet spot where we could eat the spicy dish without requiring water, but it was just spicy enough that we didn’t feel that it needed any additional spiciness added to it. This is a bigger box than you’re used to from the freezer isle. At 11.09 oz, this is almost double what you might get for a similar calorie count meal. With only 330 calories and boasting 34 grams of protein, this is exactly what we have been looking for to keep us satisfied and truly full until the next (FiTness!) meal while keeping an eye on our caloric intake. It cooks up in about 5 minutes.

We couldn’t be happier with the Carne Asada Fitness Meal. This will be a new staple menu item in our freezer as we watch our waistlines after the indulgent holiday season. We can’t wait for the new flavors to be released- the chicken with olive tapenade is already available and is next on our “to taste” list. You can find the FiTness Meal at select SaveMarts: the SaveMart on Pelandale, on Whitmore in Ceres, and in Lathrop off I-5, as well as in the freezer section of Max Muscle at 250 Dale Road in Modesto. The FiTness Meal is expected to be carried in all Save Mart locations by the end of this year. Happy New Year and Happy Eating, everyone!

A Beautiful Frontier “I see my life in terms of

music.” - Albert Einstein.

Shortly after Einstein’s death in 1955,

future Pulitzer-winning playwright Jerome Weidman published an account of a chance meeting between the two at a dinner party. Following the meal, guests were treated to a chamber music performance. Weidman found himself sitting next to Einstein, who struck up a conversation about classical music only to learn that Weidman suffered from tone-deafness and was unable to appreciate the evening’s entertainment. Einstein led his new acquaintance upstairs and proceeded to play a series of phonograph records,

By Aaron Rowan asking Weidman to sing the melodies back to him, slowly acclimating him to more and more intricate music. After this session, the two headed back to the concert, and for the first time in his life Weidman was able to enjoy the sounds of Bach. After the performance, Einstein explained his absence to the hosts: “We were engaged in the greatest activity of which man is capable…opening up yet another fragment of the frontier of beauty.” Modesto Unplugged is at its finest when we manage to give that same gift to people. I sometimes hear remarks such as “It’s like I never heard music before” or “I didn’t know music could be like that” after our listening concerts. And, I have fabulous friends and colleagues who have opened up fragments of beauty for me (let’s call it ‘fragging’ for short) with their own music and arts series. One of these is the recently re-branded Opera Modesto, which has been keeping the operatic art form alive in our area for 35 years. I challenged new artistic director Roy Stevens to develop a unique program to kick of

my 2019 run of concerts, and oh my, has he delivered. Sunday January 6, witness a groundbreaking collaboration event between our organizations. ‘Around The World In 80 Minutes’ will feature selections of opera, folk and pop, performed in no fewer that twelve different languages. Among the more exotic tongues are Sanskrit, Tagalog, and Nahuatl (an Aztec language.) A few of Opera Modesto’s young singers will also be sharing original compositions. Things will be heard on this afternoon that have never been experienced live in Modesto. Come enjoy our historic collaboration at Moon & Sixpence Music And Art House, 500 9th St. between E & F, at 3 PM. $20 general admission cash only at the door, but seats can be saved by calling 209-543-5306. The frontier of beauty awaits! Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. MODESTO UNPLUGGED. www. modestounplugged.com.

By Chris Murphy

Phillip LAn – Bay Valley Tech and Valleyworx

Many times when you hear Modesto

described in the national news, it is often prefaced with “sleepy farming town”. We all know that’s not even close. We are getting better, being referenced as the Home of American Graffiti and George Lucas and the worlds largest winery. But even still, that isn’t a complete description. Would you be surprised if we start being identified as a fast growing coding and technology zone? Well don’t be, that time is coming faster than you think. Our home of Star Wars may start delivering the hot shot programmers that bring the leading global tech companies to life and best of all, if you want to be a part of this amazing world, you can grab a hold of this rocket ship and learn how to do it too. The Modesto area is home to a couple of amazing tech companies like Clear Wave, Oportun, Varsity, and Bay Valley Tech that are coding and doing software and program development for many of the global companies you have heard about. This is the Modesto USA of the future and there is a growing skill force in our community that we need to know about and support as it quite likely be the key to our future in many of our industries. Who knows, we may have satellite offices here soon and create our own tech giants. As we know, it costs a fortune to live and exist in the Bay Area and getting there is a nightmare. So what if you could work in this high tech world, live and work here at home, with an earning potential that that is amazing. This is happening and there are many in this world that have gone from minimum wage jobs to earning $40-70 per hour or more or even create a new start up. This is really something our community should be building on. These are the people and the companies we want to attract, to build on to our great community culture and show that Modesto is not only a great Classic American City, but a city for the future. Phillip Lan has been a success in the tech world, leading at tech teams for the Gallo Winery, Hearst Media and many others and currently runs Bay

Valley Tech. Phillip, a proud UC Davis alumni, teamed up with fellow UC Davis alum Paul Draper of Centerra Capital to create ValleyWorx, an innovative coding collaborative in northwest Modesto that develops talent with true collaboration. During our recent conversation my takeaway was that the team’s mission seems to be “Changing Lives, Changing the economy and Teaching with Experience”. Let’s meet Phillip. ModestoView: You have created a new space that actually defines teamwork. What inspired you to do this? Phillip Lin: Several years ago while at Gallo, I was asked to be a judge for a Valley Hackathon event (https://valleyhackathon.com/). Through that experience, I began to understand the need for local software developers to connect, learn from each other and collaborate. The hackathons were beginning to effectively draw the local tech community together, but Modesto lacked a central innovation hub. I lived and worked in the Bay Area for 15 years and there are lots of co-working spaces and tech incubators there. We even have them in Sacramento, Stockton and Fresno, but Modesto lacked one. At that point, Opportunity Stanislaus was graciously allowing a few software developers use two of their conference rooms in downtown Modesto. However, the 400 square-foot space couldn’t support growth of the tech community. Fortunately, a fellow UC Davis alumni and author, Ken White, introduced me to another fellow Aggie, Paul Draper from Centerra Capital, who also saw how a tech co-working space like ValleyWorx could help transform the region. MV: How many companies and how many individuals are working at ValleyWorx? PL: In the short time since we opened, the ValleyWorx tech co-working space has become a growing hub for innovation in the Central Valley. There are now 10

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

companies and 30 individuals who use the space regularly and our events have drawn in as many as 150 Central Valley and Bay Area people interested in technology and innovation. MV: Many coders have to drive over the hill to the bay area, how many would rather work locally? PL: As a former commuter, I would guess that EVERY commuter would love to get those FOUR or FIVE HOURS a day back. MV: What are some of the basic skills people should have to embark on a career in coding? PL: Proficiency in math and logical thinking along with curiosity, dedication and grit are some of the things we look for. Anyone can get started by taking a few programming courses at MJC or online at http://www.freecodecamp. org or http://www.codecademy.com. People skills can also be helpful, since much of software development is done in teams and is highly collaborative now. MV: Some people have come to you out of minimum wages jobs in our community, how have those people been changed through this program. PL: Through the tech community’s friendship, support, mentorship and networking, these individuals now have access to six-figure career paths. Some Bay Area companies are now paying over $300K/year for software developers due to a talent shortage there, so it is creating opportunities for us here in the Central Valley.. The local tech community is very generous. Those who have successfully transitioned into software careers give back by mentoring others, sponsoring tech events and

teaching computer literacy classes at area rescue missions. MV: If my business wants a mobile app for my company, can I get it at ValleyWorx? PL: Yes, there are software consultants who work at the ValleyWorx co-working space who can help your company create apps or websites. However, as a digital marketer, I would encourage all companies to start by defining the challenges and problems they are trying to solve first. A good technology consultant can help you decide whether an app or other technology is the best solution before spending time and money to create it. MV: What is an example of some cross team development you have experienced? PL: At ValleyWorx, different companies regularly collaborate on projects for external clients. Recently, several teams with complementary front-end and backend programming skills worked together to deliver an agtech solution that will benefit our local almond industry. MV: What can parents do to help prepare their kids for a career in coding? PL: Local programs such as CodeX and the Modesto Academy of Music and Design teach coding and robotics classes appropriate for junior high students. Many

area high schools now have fantastic software development instructors such as Andrew Johnson at Enochs High School and Sean Derrick at Ripon High School. For older students 18-years and older, we teach web development as well as a video game design class using Unreal Engine at ValleyWorx. MV: What advice would you give someone who wants to make a jump to this? PL: Start taking some programming classes and connect with the local tech community. You can check out local software meetups at https://www.meetup. com/Valley-Software-Developers/ MV: What do you need most from local companies to make this a bigger success? PL: Employers who benefit from software professionals can help accelerate growth of our local software talent base by supporting our apprenticeship program and scholarship fund. Contact us to get more information on how to partner with us. https://www.bayvalleytech.com/contact MV: You are currently expanding the workspace, what are some of the current projects? PL: We are partnering with Varsity Technologies and others to build out new conference rooms, offices and shared co-working spaces to accommodate growth. Beyond the physical space, we are expanding our software apprenticeship program, working to help launch an Agtech Summit on February 7th and continuing to grow our Hackathon events. MV: Describe this tech community in 3-5 years from now. PL: We’ve made tremendous progress in building a self-sustaining ecosystem here. Our local software talent base is already drawing interest from Bay Area companies, so I would anticipate that within a few years we will have more tech employers in Modesto driving eco-

nomic growth for the region. MV: What do you feel people should know about this program and the tech community in general that they might not know? PL: We have amazing, talented people here in the Central Valley. Our local tech community is growing rapidly and Bay Area companies would do well to invest in this region. MV: Describe your ideal day in the future Modesto USA. PL: Doing what we already do every day--working in this innovation hub with talented friends and colleagues who love technology and want to use it to transform our region economically.

GO Pokemon Go Players New Years:

The slogan “new year, new you” is played out, but one thing I consider this time of year is the concept of time. It might be a “new” year but it’s still a continuation of your life, and your current time line. This makes me think of Foucault’s Pendulum. It’s a simple device conceived as an experiment to demonstrate the rotation of Earth designed by Leon Foucault, a French scientist, and was first introduced at the World’s Fair in Paris 1851. A swinging pendulum appears to travel around the pit knocking over the pegs. In reality the ball is always swinging in place, and rather it is the Earth’s rotation causing the illusion that it moves. Modesto Junior College West Campus hosts a small version of this pendulum outside it’s science building, and it’s a poke stop for Pokemon Go Players. Who says you can’t learn and play games at the same time? Stop by and check it out. Catch ‘em all trainers!

BIG VIEW

By Chris Murphy

THE BIG JOURNEY AHEAD

Since the beginning of Modesto, we have thrived on technology to make real progress, from the early Modesto Irrigation District, early civic electricity, one of the first municipal airports to the innovation of wine making and food production that feeds the world. At the same time our arts and culture grew along with it. As Silicon Valley has revolutionized the world, that area has become unlivable for many, and this new tech world is setting up shop in Modesto, setting the stage for new exciting innovations, maybe even taking our agriculture and the food we make to a new level requiring new scientific developments that need research science to build on the ag science. Far fetched? Not really. It is happening now as our traditional old school economies start to blend to create a new Modesto Matrix. This matrix is being programmed right here in Modesto as you read this. More and more people can work remotely and the quality of life in Modesto, with a high tech job is really good.

How does this make our community better

The world needs to know that the people capital is here, we have the talent and many are still forced to go over the hill to make it big. We need to showcase what is happening at ValleyWorx, Oportun, Bay Valley Tech, the Volt School, our local colleges and other innovators. As we see a community that becomes more connected with the tech world there are more opportunities for smarter jobs. All of the coding in world serves to make the aps we love work we move from old ag to smart ag if we show the world what the talent in Modesto can do.

Smart Food

What is smart food? Almond milk, soy milk, wine packaging innovation, aseptic packed shelf stable beverages, insulation for direct to consumer shipping, ready-to-eat frozen food, block chain food chain farm to fork traceability, targeted drone managed field irrigation, sun tracking solar panels and large scale organics are just a few ways that our ag industry can innovate with the proper coding, controller processing development and blending with the equipment fabrication we have here with companies like Beeler Industries that put manufacturing in our own local hands. There is so much more to what you find at the store, and at the core of it, the source is our own local farming community that you can find at the Farmer’s Market. See how this works? We need to tell our story, show young talented people they can live and work here by encouraging our local companies to hire and invest in these people. Yes friends, Modesto USA is a Classic American City and we will build on our rich history and traditions to build a new economy for the future.

Alt Fuels Innovation

We have a lot of dairies which means we have a lot of methane. Wouldn’t it be cool to make Stanislaus County an alternative fuel research leader? Methane reclamation is a high tech solution that is actually in production at Fiscalini Cheese and Joseph Farms and is a much needed solution that solves a regional air and water problem and is a green energy solution. Algae? Switchgrass? These are all things that we can grow in our agricultural region so we are a natural. UC Berkeley and UC Merced should be teaming up with us, maybe creating a lab at the Crows Landing facility to be a alt fuel leader for the next century requiring highly-paid research scientists. Sun? Every home and business should have solar as we get 330 beautiful days every year delivering free power. Water, we have to get Don Pedro recertified and continue to lead. So you’ll aim toward the sky Anyone remember how cool it was to go to the San Francisco planetarium on the 6th Grade Field trip? That was one of the best days of

the year and now you can have that same cool experience right here in Modesto. I believe that is fundamentally essential for our kids to know and understand science and the universe we live in. It is so mind blowing to try to understand the concept of endless. MJC Planetarium offers this view of the universe right here in Modesto at MJC West. The planetarium itself consists of a Zeiss Skymaster ZKP-4 LED/fiber-optic star projector coupled with the Zeiss Velvet Projection System to display unparalleled images of the night sky and full-dome planetarium films onto a 40-foot suspended dome ceiling for an audience of up to 100 people. You really need to check it out, and maybe even take the kids. Who know, maybe they will do Pink Floyd laser shows there too someday. One day, you may look through the telescope and see the digital web of the Matrix. Maybe it’s there already. Wow man, far out. www.mjc.edu/instruction/sme/gvm/ planetarium.php

Old is New Again

There will be some important milestones celebrated this year. One of the most exciting is the 100 Years of MoBand, the Modesto Band of Stanislaus County. Formed in 1919 as the Modesto Boys band, MoBand as evolved over the years to one of the largest annual events that our city has ever had. I have tried to find other cities that have something like this and Modesto appears to be quite special. There have been thousands of local musicians who have played in MoBand over the years and each summer, for 6 amazing Thursdays, the 200 musicians in MoBand perform in Graceada Park creating one of the best slices of Modestocana you can get.

Blade Runner was set in 2019 ! Who remembers the house of the future in early Disneyland? Remember the vision of Orwell’s1984

16

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

Blade Runner 2019 or the clean white-trimmed modern world that was promised in 2001: A Space Odyssey? Have we really made it to the dystopian cyborg filled world that was portrayed in Blade Runner? It is kind of weird how our world has progressed. As we speed toward the future, we seem to be running in split screen. As one of our worlds veers toward Artificial Intelligence, automated cars and drones and refrigerators that think for you, our other world as moved into the late 1800s in search of the mechanical age of hand made shoes, hand crafted spirits and knowing the name the farms from where your Brussels sprouts come. It is two parallel paths that Jules Verne or Arthur C Clarke did not predict, but here we are, and it creates some interesting counterpoints. As we launch into 2019, the Modesto USA connection to Blade Runner leads to our local Legend of the Cruise and soon to be inducted into the Modesto High Hall of Fame, Gene Winfield, who created the cars of the future in Blade Runner. Amazing how these worlds converge. There are some other really cool milestones in our community. Our friends at TSM insurance will be celebrating 100 years this year. The Community Hospice will be celebrating 40 years with care so vital to our community. The Modesto Area Music Awards turn 20 this year and will celebrate with a special gala MAMA Awards this fall as we celebrate our amazing live music culture. www.moband.org www.tsminsurance.com www.hospiceheart.org www.modestoareamusic.com

VISIONS OF THE FUTURE We need to think big. We need to think beyond the streets and neighborhoods that we have here today. Every community needs to try to have a guide to the galaxy...

Elliot Begoun

a universe road map as it were. It we set big goals, plan for the possibilities, what could we become. We asked a few of our local leaders to put their future goggles on and tell us what they see.

Amy Vickery Jim Christiansen Artist - mercenary_ graphics@yahoo.com Think the murals and art related businesses, creative spaces will expand and fill out more of the Arts Block areas. If the City of Modesto took a more direct funding interest, in consultation with the artists, musicians, performers as well as venues supporting the creative arts, over directing a rote schedule of events, we would see more inviting spaces. At present, its been the creative community and partner venues that have generated a living scene. Modesto View a big sponsor in this. Some items a good idea, but need some follow up, more durable paint to the Gallo Center crosswalks, Some rework or rebuild of the Tenth Street planters falling apart, so it reflects the area in a state of good repair. A couple of decades in the making, the arts scene beginning to really flourish.

Director of Legislative Affairs & Communications, Stanislaus County VickeryA@stancounty.com In the new year and years to come, we’ll start to see fascinating changes in how we live based on advances in technology, particularly in transportation. Electric and even autonomous vehicles will become mainstream, innovations in public transportation like high-speed rail, electric scooters, e-bikes and, transportation sharing options will be everything. People will Uber everywhere. Eventually kids won’t need to get a driver’s license. In business, people will favor new ways to prioritize their health, our environment and efficiency. Can I get from here to there, while I answer emails, join a conference call and maybe squeeze in a mini work out? Yes, please!

Founder, Intertwine Group www.theintertwinegroup.com I believe Modesto can/will become the Silicon Valley of food. We are at the intersection of growers, processors and venture capital just over the hill. We need to establish a culture of entrepreneurialism, teaching our kids how to be the future founders of companies. We also need to create a hub for innovation building commercial kitchens and co-working space for creators. If we do that, Modesto has all the tools needed to become the leader in the new food economy.

Ruhi Sheikh Co-founder ModShop and Ill List Co-host www.modshop209.com There needs to be a bigger focus on protecting our environment. We need to make sure we have a healthy Earth left for our kids and their future. I hope to see more incentives to go Electric and Solar. I’d love to see more Electric vehicles on the road and for them to be affordable for everyone. We can’t come up with fancy tech and move into the future without a safe planet to live on.

Ann Endsley www.greensontenth.com Greens on 10th, community volunteer and so much more. Modesto will embrace its rich multi-generational agricultural heritage and become the Valley’s premier destination for agritourism and artisan food products. Our community will have access to the bounty of goodness produced right in our area and we will have a community kitchen for entrepreneurs to develop new products from the abundance coming from our fields.

These Modesto 2020 projects included refurbishing, restoring, and painting heritage buildings;

housing, clothing, and feeding those in need; cleaning streets and lanes; replanting parks and gardens; restoring playgrounds; painting murals and creating public art; tutoring students and providing college scholarships; public performances of poetry, music, and other arts; exhibits and talks about Modesto’s heritage; building and cleaning walking and biking trails; and dozens of other projects all over the city. It was a year of amazing community involvement and cooperation with each group doing its own thing but with a common goal.

Downtown will be a place for live music culture and the arts as that quality of life is key to new business attraction and the creation of downtown residential living. Large local companies will invest in downtown living spaces to attract new recruits and support even more local restaurants. Our local city and county government will realize that the cultural investment in downtown will create a healthier city from edge to edge and encourage infill development to make it easy for transportation and access to jobs.

Future City Competition The future is being designed right here in Modesto. Five teams from two Stanislaus County schools will participate in the Stanislaus County Future City Practice Competition on Saturday, January 12. The final round of the competition is open to the public and begins at 11:30 AM. This event, sponsored by the Stanislaus County Office of Education and supported by the Education Foundation of Stanislaus County, is designed to help prepare Stanislaus County students for this year’s Northern California Regional State Finals Future City Competition on Saturday, January 26, 2019 in the Sacramento area. The winner of the Regional State Finals will advance to the National Finals in Washington, D.C. in February. The Future City Competition is a national, project-based learning experience where students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade imagine, design, and build cities of the future. Students work as a team with an educator and engineer mentor to plan cities using SimCity™ software; research and write a city description; build tabletop scale models with recycled materials; create a project plan, and present their ideas before judges. The theme for this year is “Powering Our Future.” Teams will build a future city with a resilient power grid that can withstand and quickly recover from the impacts of a natural disaster. This could be really cool. January 12 10:00 AM – 1:30 PM Stanislaus County Office of Education 1100 H Street, Modesto 209-238-1710

MAMA VIEW

New Beginnings By Middagh Goodwin

Happy New Year everyone.

Hello and thank you Modesto, this month I celebrate my 5th year of writing for the ModestoView. I am grateful to be a part of such a great institution, working with people who do not just write about events but are the ones who make many of them happen. I am honored to be part of the Modesto Area Music Association and be able to help book so many great musicians at community events sponsored in part by the View and helping to create new ones like May the Fourth-Star Wars Day, Graffiti-Con, Patio-Fest and bringing back the Downtown Sampler. Along with Music in the Plaza, the Cruise Route Walk of Fame and Rockin’ Holiday. Being part of the ViewCrew has kept me quite busy. This year the Modesto Area Music Association celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the Awards Show and we are already planning on making it extra special. MAMA also plans on creating a series of local music showcases and record release shows with full production. If you have a new release let us know also make sure to keep us up to date on all your gigs and

other news so we can help you promote and increase your fanbase. We also have set aside funds for a couple scholarships to VMI or Modesto Sound so if you or your child are interested, send an email letting us know why you should be considered. We want to help create the next generation of musicians and or sound people. I am also going to start booking Music in the Plaza and the local stage at the Stanislaus County Fair soon, so if you are interested in performing, please make sure I have your current contact information. If you are looking for entertainment for an event, conference, grand opening, get in touch so I can help you out. This year we will be teaming up with Plink.com to help facilitate and streamline the booking process. More info on that to come. Let’s all work together to make 2019 a bigger and better year for local entertainment. Go out and support each other and the venues that host live music. Pick up that CD from your favorite local player, throw a buck in the tip jar or buy a beer for the band. As always music is best enjoyed with your friends.

SONGWRITING VIEW Welcome to the new year! We are creatures of habit-call it loyalty, call it routine, whatever you name it, it’s comfortable. Step out of that place and discover. Vanessa Valencia is a name to notice, an artist to follow, a fresh face to learn about. An Alternative Independent Singer-Songwriter, her sound can be described as acoustic, Alternative-easy listening. Her voice hearkens Harriet Wheeler meets Alanis and she handily accompanies herself on guitar. Valencia is quickly garnering a following because she never adopted that “trendy Indie-Girl vocal”, her sound is thoughtful and unique. You can listen to Vanessa show her artistry on Saturday, the 19, as a featured performer at the ModestoView stage located in Graceada Park during The Women’s March and the 27 at DEVA. Tuesday, the 15, Jim McCutcheon, six-time Grammy-nominated Folk Artist is returning for his 17th benefit concert for the Modesto Peace/ Life Center. Local husband and wife team, Mark and Cindy Lemaire will open the show at the Modesto Church of the Brethren at 2301 Woodland Avenue Modesto. Doors open 6:30 Deva Cafe keeps their lineup of music moving with a full calendar. Saturday Live Music Matinees will bring Ava Grace 1/5, Sophia 1/12, Ava Grace 1/19 and Abraham Steve Lackey 1/26. Mondo has solo shows at O’Brien’s Tavern on 1/10 from 9 pm, Rivet’s on 1/17 at 8 pm and the full band will perform at P Wexford’s on 1/24 at 8 pm and The Vault in Ripon on 1/31 from 7 pm. John Denver will be remembered as a prolific songwriter and storyteller who wrote some of the most memorable songs of the 70’s. Jim Curry pays tribute to Denver is his touring show-Take Me Home The Music Of John Denver. Recreating a “vast legacy of multi-platinum hits” for a 209 audience happens at the Gallo Center for the Arts on the 25 at 7:30 pm. Start this new year off with a pledge to create and encourage beauty. Treat yourself to a concert, host a touring band in your home or turn your space into a venue, contribute to a crowdfunding source to help an artist achieve their dream or just show up and leave a tip. BLUES VIEW Blues Beginings By Big Earl Matthews Hello everyone and happy new year to you. 2018 was a great year for music and I am really excited about what is in store for us this year. I honestly believe that the music scene in Modesto is growing and getting better in a lot of ways. I also believe that it is in no small part thanks to the Modestoview and its Champion Chris Murphy. From the stage on 10th st which hosts concerts on the plaza during the good weather months to Rockin’ Holidays to working to promote everything that happens in our area and tons of stuff that is done behind the scenes to keep things rolling. I want to say a big thank you to Chris and the whole ModView staff for being a driving force behind so much of what makes Modesto a place I am proud to call home. January is usually a slow month and this year is no exception. So I thought I would take a moment to tell you about something I have talked about many times but that bares repeating. I want to tell you about Jams, Jams are events where spontaneous music lives. They are spaces where the musical com-

munity come together and mixes and mingles in an open fun, anything could happen kind of way. You may ask yourself, self why haven’t I ever gone to a jam? I would also ask you the same thing. They are almost always free to attend and you will for sure have a one of a kind experience. If you are a musician and you haven’t even gone then I challenge you to make it a point to make a point to check out some of the rooms in our area. If you are not a musician but you love music and musical folk then you should also attend. Jams are known for their casual atmosphere and warmth. If you are looking for some leads on places to check out, I recommend The Barkin’ Dog and Nino’s in Modesto, The 133 Club in Manteca, Haven Acres in Lathrop, Garlic Brothers in Stockton, Mr. D’s in Stockton, Fired Up Grill in Ceres and if you are curious you can always look around in the Modesto View calendar for more. At its best music is more than entertainment, it can build community but, you have to take the first step and head out to a show. Again happy new year and I hope to see you out at a show.

JAZZ&WORLD VIEW What’s new with Jazz and the Blues News? By Eric Benson “If you luv music you’re gonna love this” Well out with the old and in with the new. I have resolutions a plenty to work on but when you still haven’t taken the weight bench out of the box from last year this gives me pause. You know you can’t rush these things. I believe we can re-invent ourselves with what we do and so I bought a Tenor and Alto Sax and have been taking some lessons with Martin Martinez of Gottschalks Music. Will I be John Coltrane? A resounding no, but it is a gas to play something musical and feel the vibrations of the sax. Next on the list is getting my mitts on a Vibraphone. Well I hope the year ahead is a blessed one and finds you and yours well and thriving. Blue Monday Party invitational jam celebrates January with a Latin Explosion. GEEK VIEW

Things are Looking Super for Invincible Comics in 2019 and Beyond

COMEDY VIEW Winter Cooties by Felicia Aleman

by Alan Falconer

For any geek, Wednesday is often the

best day of the week; when new comic books arrive on the shelves at our friendly neighborhood comic book stores. For Modesto, one of those stores happens to be Invincible Comics, a relative newcomer to the geek scene in our fair city. I managed to get a moment with owner Sean Beck to talk about the secret origins of Invincible Comics and what we can expect in the near future from them. ModestoView: What inspired you to open Invincible Comics here in Modesto? Sean Beck: Well I’m a nerd, and I love geek culture, and I just wanted a place where people could come in and talk “geek”; where people could have this community. From the art to the writing, the inkers, the pencilers, everything about comic books. There’s a lot of television shows and films that people don’t even realize are based on comics. I just saw it as an opportunity to be able to enjoy our Modesto geek community. MV: Where did the name “Invincible Comics” come from? Beck: I don’t want to get in trouble with (comic book writer) Robert Kirkman, but “Invincible” is my absolute favorite comic book and comic book character. It’s also based on my faith: Philippians 4:13 - “I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me.”, and to me, that really personifies “Invincible”. We liked the name “Invincible Comics” and just went with it. MV: As we’ve seen in the past, we had Bonanza Books and Comics, who were around for decades. It was a touchstone of the geek community here in Modesto. I know you personally had a friendship with the owners there, too. Do you feel that Invincible Comics continues the legacy of Bonanza Books and Comics?

22

Beck: I’d like to think that, yeah. The Allen family are very special to me. I mean, I grew up going to Bonanza. My first comic book was from a spinner rack at a gas station in Manteca, I begged my mom to take me to the closest comic book shop there was, which was Bonanza. When they moved to McHenry, that’s where I shopped for decades. I’ve become good friends with Terry, and he’s taught me a lot about comics. I’d like to think that maybe the torch has been passed on, and we’d like to carry on what they’ve been doing for so long. To be in business for 44 years, they were doing something incredible. MV: Speaking of the future, what’s next for Invincible Comics? Beck: We’ve got some plans for the future. We’d like to build a website an online store, and hopefully, we can grow to the point where we can have store-exclusive covers for comics. So that’s kind of where we want to go in the future. We’re going to be locked into this location for a few more years, but for our next location, we’d like to purchase it ourselves.

Hello, hello, hello. Happy new year. A time for new beginnings and changes and welcome the baby New Year. I’m sorry to say that it is also time for another visitor: The Cootie. Cooties and I have been getting to know each other well. The kind of cooties that have you freezing one second and sweating the next. The kind of cooties that have you coughing up a lung, but only when you’re trying to say something important. Cooties that have you sneezing your eyeballs lose. Cooties that make your stomach feel like an out of control merry go around. Of course, if you don’t have a cootie of your own, there are plenty of others who are more than happy to share--the person at the grocery store coughing all over the cart you’ve

gotta use, the kid with a crazy damp face who wants a big ol’ smooch. Yes, it’s cootie time and I have been celebrating by hosting all kinda cooties. But let’s move on. Way back in 2009 was the first MAMA Comedy award and that winner was a hilarious lady by the name of Marcella Arguello. Since then, Marcella got busy becoming a comedy club regular across the country and has established herself as a comic to watch when she made the MSN. com top 10 list of “Top female comedians working in film and television today”. Most recently, she has been writing for “Bill Nye Saves the World” and was a regular contestant on Comedy Central’s @Midnight among so many other credits. January 25, Marcella will be performing at the Gallo Center a show that should not be missed. Contact the Gallo Center box office for tickets. Last time I checked they were going fast, so get your tickets. You won’t be disappointed See you next month--hopefully without my cootie. Stay tuned for this month’s interview, too.

YOUR LISTEN AT WORK STATION

MV: Sounds like Invincible Comics has lots of long-term goals! Looking into 2019, what would you say are some things on your to-do list for this year? Beck: Well 2019 is going to be a big year for us in advertising. Even though we’ve been here for two years now, we still get people coming in and saying “We had no idea you were here!” And that’s to be expected, we’re the new kid in town and that’s fine, but I’d like for us to have a bigger presence and grow our visibility in Modesto and beyond. Invincible Comics is located at 1035 W. Orangeburg Ave, 95355, or you can find them online at Facebook.com/InvincibleComics. They can also be reached by phone at (209) 409-8027. Fitness for your Health

By Efren Martinez

Happy New Year! It’s 2019, and most have us have put on an average of eight-holiday pounds. At this time of the year, it’s always the same resolution ideas and behavior of going on a diet or joining the gym for a thinner you. My advice is to forget about those resolutions and strive for a continued healthy lifestyle. So yes most likely you did indulge over the Holiday’s with your food choices more than you would during any other time of the year, but that may not have to do much with those eight pounds you gained. Research has shown us that during the Winter and colder months our metabolic rates slow down to as much as 62% for most people. That’s as huge as those eight pounds that make you unable

to squeeze into your skinny jeans. Friends food is and can be a very powerful source on how healthy we can be. There are hundreds of different compounds in much of the vegetables, plants, seasonings and fruits that can do a great deal more for our health when it comes to weight loss. Since my healthy lifestyle change in 2004, I’ve made it a point to study the nutrition in much of what I eat. I’d like you to do the same for 2019. So instead of starting some fad diet or starting some hard to reach fitness goals from the start. Open up an old fashion paperback book and research the foods that can help you live a healthier life. Make it the year of nutrition and fitness but not so much for vanity, do it for your health! I think Judge Judy said it best; “Beauty Fades, Dumb is Forever.”

Nutrition tip Eating 3 cups of Brussels Sprouts per week can ignite your metabolic rate and studies have shown that you can lose as much as 8 pounds throughout three months. Results may vary depending on the rest of your nutrition. You are what you eat and drink.

Happy New Year!

Choices for the New Year

By Sofia Johnson

By Mary Layton

Happy new year! In honor of resolutions I want to share one of my favorite things to do that I learned from some of my closest friends, Hannah Johnson and Lauren Stone and that I try to incorporate into my daily life. While we were at six flags they taught me a game that they called 100 smiles. The game was played how it sounds. We tried to make 100 people smile before we left the park that evening. We has small conversations, complimented people while we stood in line, and we even danced with people and made friends with the staff. These small

interactions were unforgettable and were what made the trip even more enjoyable. I recommend trying this in any public setting as it will spread positivity and and inevitably make you, yourself more positive. Some places you could try this in January are the Gallo Center for the Arts where you can find Elvis & Me: Priscilla Presley on the 11th or The Wizard of Oz on the 22nd and 23rd. Don’t forget that the Modesto On Ice rink is still open until the 21st! You can also keep your eye out for events at the state, in the plaza or live music at your favorite restaurant. I had the honor of playing at Fuzios a few weeks ago and it reminded me how great our music scene is. I hope everyone had a relaxing break and I look forward to keeping you updated on all the fun events in Modesto this year! If you have an all-ages tip or activity, please tell us at info@ modestoview.com

I confess in 2019 I would like to have more

time. After giving it some thought I came to the conclusion that the biggest thieves of my precious time are the acquisition of material things and obsessive busy-ness. What I’d like to do is to lighten my load and simplify my life. Most of the time, but especially during the Christmas season we are made to believe that we need more new stuff or better stuff. I’ve made a pact with myself that I’m only allowed new things if

I let go of a lot of the old ones. I can give them to people that like or need them. To me having less stuff means that I have less to protect and maintain. It will give me more space and tranquillity. I have time to draw, or play music or watch the wind play with the Queen palm outside the window. It’s nice to be in the present, not in the past or in the future. To me decluttering my closets is such a good way of feeling the newness of the year! My plan is to go slowly about this task. One day at a time! Wishing you all a great New Year full of the incredible lightness of being and a sense of new possibilities and new vigour. Cherish what still works, let go of what stands in your way! For more information, you can go to taichi4modesto.com or call (209)572-4518

You know ModestoView is all about the local, but we have a soft spot for Trader Joe’s.

There is a possibility that there we could get one in Century Center. A new group has purchased the shopping center is going to completely redo it and we are trying to show Trader Joe’s that we would be interested. If you are, please go the the Trader Joe’s website and request a new location in our city. Modesto is on the list, but let’s get them to do it.
