I hope that you all had a very happy holidays and great New Year and wish you an exciting new 2020. Wow, we are at the doorway to an exciting new Roaring 20s, the 2020s that is. There are so many parallels in where we are as a culture, but we need to act responsibly in planning this decade so it doesn’t end like the last 20s. I encourage you to really get involved this year, find local projects that mean something to you and let’s make our community with more participation, more activism, more engagement so that we are all working together, making the city that we want. This should be a decade of historic preservation and creativity. Modesto turns 150 years old this year. Sure there are cities in Europe that are 2,000 years old and in the middle east and china that are thousands of years older, and there were native villages here before us, but we have accomplished a lot in our 150 years and have a lot to be proud of and do we have stories to tell. This year will be a special project with ModestoView and the City of Modesto as we try to condense our 150 years of history into something fun and readable that will make you want to learn more. We are going to look at each of the decades each month this year and please let me know if you want to contribute to this effort. We want to make Modesto history fun and interesting. We are unique, have some very special stories and people that have brought us to where we are. I am convinced, that if we draw on our history, and what makes us unique, we will have a brighter future. We have so many local resources that we can go to like the McHenry Museum, the McHenry Mansion and www. historicmodesto.com and we are all richer

and more independent when we know our history. It will be fun as we go through the 10s and 20s and lead up to the cruisin’ and midcentury 50s and 60s and then finish the year in real time. Finally we can create a cultural experience, celebrating our classic car, cruising and rock n roll history that will attract fans from all over the world. Modesto native George Lucas gave Modesto a great gift in the film American Graffiti. Celebrated as one of the top 100 films of all time, it captures a great time in Modesto. People already come from many countries to experience Graffiti Summer, and now we will have a museum that will bring it all together, attract more tourists, and educate our own citizen about how cool we are and why our history is important for our future. Millions visit the retro CarsLand at Disneyland because of a movie, let’s make the same magic happen here. Read more on page 8. Remembering
Dave Lopez
We lost one of Modesto’s champions last month. David Lopez, former Modesto City Council member passed away last month at the age of 53, an innocent victim of a car accident. Dave believed in “ModestoCana” our own brand of hospitality. He was long time local businessman and an advocate for community service and had a smile for all. He is survived by wife Sheri, children Josh, Chelsea, Boyd, Amanda, and Desi, and granddaughter Claire. Dave’s passion for our community will be missed.

Yay, Rockin’ Holiday 2019 was a big success! Thanks to all that made Rockin Holiday
2019 a Rockin’ success and make it better every year. We delivered a lot of magic to the Modesto holiday season and put a lot of smiles on kids’ faces with our Rockin’ North Pole, Rockin’ Santa and the Rockin’ Elves, the Rockin’ Snow and Rockin’ Music in the Plaza with special amazing Rockin’ Tree animated light shows. It takes an amazing team to bring Rockin’ Holiday to Modesto each season and we could not do this without the amazing teamwork of our supporters and sponsors. Working together, we are creating new spaces, events and activities that make Modesto vibrant and interesting. We made it through some vandalism that set us back, but we delivered on our mission to create classic Modesto winter wonderland, that is free to all that visit and encourages people to come to Downtown Modesto. It is amazing to be able to deliver mobility in some of the poorest parts of the world. It
really means the difference between life and death to the disabled and is transformative for their families that have cared for them. Upcoming wheelchair distribution trips are Puerto Escondio Mexico from March 21-28 and Cuernavaca Mexico April 18-25. Volunteers pay their own way, but the costs are reasonable and you will return transformed by the project of delivering mobility to those that have never had it. Volunteers are needed to continue to complete the assembly of the Hope Haven pediatric chairs on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Wheelchair assembly will resume the second week of the new year. It’s ski season and it is wonderful when people of all abilities are able to do sports like skiing. Join the Society for Disabilities for their Winter Ski program! The adapted ski program is for children and adults with diverse abilities. The program provides access to the sport of snow skiing with helpful volunteers that utilize adapted equipment to assist with the learning process. In solidarity with women’s marches all over the country - let’s join and march with our sisters in Modesto! We will meet at the Starbucks near the rally spot at 9:45 a.m. so we can find each other. There will then be a one-hour rally that will start at 10:00 a.m. on the corner of Briggsmore and McHenry. The rally will last an hour at the corner then will continue with a march down McHenry Avenue and ending at Graceada Park (approximately 2 miles). At Graceada park there will be tables with information and speakers supporting women in government and leadership positions and time to mill around with women’s march allies! Signs optional!

NEW BEGINNINGS January starts at that nexus of out with the old, and new beginnings. Auld Lang Syne to favorite all woman cooperative Tri-Chromatic Gallery, closing early 2020. This hot spot will be missed, but indelible impression on Modesto Art Scene, with it’s on the edge and mystical art presentations, performance art, poetry, artist talks and workshops. The Writer’s Workshop was held there, craft nights, parties, Broadsides, concerts and music, hosted by a vibrant group of partners. Chelsea America, Brook Heathcoat, Zoe Toscano, founders, with Dana Koster and Summer Kraft added in, ran an all-female managed gallery, with massage therapy studio up on J Street. If you believe in reincarnation, there may be a future ahead, but the lease at current location will not be renewed. New artists and old can still participate as exhibiting artists in Stanislaus Artists Open Studio Tour. Final registration deadline is January 15. The event is April 25 and 26, and maps this year will be FREE. Look for the new Instagram page for this Ninth Annual event at #stanislausaos. 30 artists had signed up by the October 31 early bird entry deadline, and is open to Stanislaus County artists in any media, with studio, or by arrangement to share a space. Originally developed from the Stanislaus Travel and Tourism Roundtable, the studio tour focuses on how and where art is created locally, and art is for sale during the event. The Purchase Prize Awards will continue this year, so fill out your forms to enter the drawing to win an original participating artist creation. Leonardo: The Works, remembers Leonardo Da Vinci’s career in an 85 minute documentary January 8 at 7 pm. On the Big Screen at the State Theatre, the film features some biography and history of Leonardo, and images of his attributed paintings and drawings of the Renaissance Genius. I have art at Barkin Dog Grill this month, until a new artist opens the new year for the January 16 Art Walk opening of the 2020 season. The art is for sale, with a mix of watercolors, ink wash and acrylic paintings. If interested in purchase, call me at 209-241-7130. American Graffiti, one of the 100 greatest movies of all time was made about growing up in Modesto USA. Those who where were there will tell you, the film got it right. Others will tell you that it was the greatest time to grow up, the cars, the fun, the boys, the girls and of course, the music. There is only one home of American Graffiti in the whole galaxy and it’s here in Modesto USA. Even though the film was made in Petaluma, Modesto’s where it’s all about. This is were George Lucas grew up, went to school, created his stories and raced his cars and then went to Modesto JC before heading off to USC. A group of local businesspeople, car and history fans have gotten together to create a place to celebrate our Graffiti, Car and Music culture. The Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum is a 501(c)3 corporation and is now ready to come to life! The museum will celebrate our love affair with the automobile, celebrate the 10th and 11th streets that were home to Modesto’s cruising experience. It will bring to life a night in 1962, immerse the visitors in the sights and sounds of the Graffiti USA experience. Guests will be able to walk “10th” Street, check out KFIV radio station, check out the stores of the time, go to the Drive In and even grab a burger and fries in a functional recreation of our classic diners. We will celebrate our Legends
of the Cruise and will create a place that will attract classic fans from around the world and build an educational center that will excite the next generation of little cruisers. This interactive museum experience will tell more of the stories that created the Graffiti days. This is not just a car museum, it will be a immersive experience, like Cars Land at Disney’s California Adventure that will take you to another place. There will even be a functional hot rod shop that will be making new cars, and celebrating the creations of the legendary Modestan Gene Winfield. Hopefully soon, there will be a new building to house this museum. The Graffiti USA museum needs you, your donations, your ideas, your collectibles and possibly even your cars. We are looking for community minded people to help up build this museum and make it a reality. Chef’s of Italy Goes Big for 2020
If you are craving authentic Italian food, you need to look no further than Chefs of New York. Vinnie Altadonna and his daughter Kim have been serving up amazing flavors for years at their original location on Oakdale Road, and their location at 14th and J Street, has become “the corner” for great food and now it is becoming known also for great music. Chefs of New York has also become a destination for diners from Napa, Sacramento and outside of Modesto at the same time remaining a local favorite. But first, it is about the food. The word here is “legit”. The Chefs of New York delivers a rich variety of flavors, from chicken, veal, to salmon and some of the most tasty sauces that grace their favorite dishes like their lasagna. The sauces are based on Vinnie’s mom’s recipes. These are 300 year-old recipes, handed down for generations and the sauces and flavors are amazing. I asked Vinnie what he was still the most excited about and he was quick to respond about his lasagna, made from his Mother’s recipe. “My mother, Emilia Galati Altadonna is an amazing chef. She turned 100 years old this 4th of July. Her cooking methods and sauces are what really sets Chefs of New York apart.” The Chicken Piccata is stellar, the Shrimp Scampi is so flavorful, the Veal Marsala is amazing and you can order the marinara sauce options on most entrees and should not to be missed. You can also find lighter options as well with the Tarragon Salmon and Vegetarian Baked Manicotti. But, if you can’t decide, the Lasagna is a winner. Diners will regularly see Vinnie in and out of the kitchen, greeting diners and making sure everything running well. This is the key reason why his new partner, Clay Rosson invested in the company to help make sure that the restaurants run well, with great consistency while allowing Vinnie to be more involved in the dining rooms. Clay, a local business owner, has long been a fan of the food and now had the free time and the resources to help take Chefs to the next level, offering stability and guidance and a dose of classic rock, blues and jazz. The fact that Chefs of New York occupies a former record store from the 50s and 60s is not lost on Clay and he hopes to create a better link to the music. You can find blues and jazz Thursday through Saturday nights with David Cutler doing both acoustic and small combo sets right inside the front window for all to see. Clay and Vinnie want music to be a big part of the experience and have even added a Sunday Blues Brunch beginning 11 am. And, the breakfast sandwich as a fresh Italian roll and is super delicious. One of the great things about Chefs of Italy is the dining experience with great servers like Terri Utne who will guid you through the variety of options and make sure you close out with a tasty dessert. We talked about the benefits of delivery via Doordash and Clay and Vinnie were very strategic about this. Vinnie feels that it exposes their restaurant to more people that may want to try their Italian food and they may turn into regulars. So when

you are tabbing through your mobile phone, you can order from Chefs of New York. What about the future? Some of the new things you can expect at the corner of 14th and J Street will be new extended Sunday hours, a new outside patio, possible new upstairs space, and earlier hours for brunch during the week and even maybe some breakfast. Vinnie was quick to add in, “A Hot Dog Cart”! Wow, we agree! Having a good authentic New York style hot dog cart would be fantastic. So make sure that you always slow down when you get to 14th and J Street, and peek in the windows to see who is playing music, check out your friends that are there waiting for you and the tasty authentic food coming out of the kitchen. You will love the tradition and be excited for the future. Oh yeah, don’t forget the thin crust New York style pizza, so delicious.

You are proud of our culture and history; be it innovations in agriculture or irrigation, the awesome graffiti car culture or as home to great companies like E&J Gallo, the rockabilly underbelly we cherish or our incredible symphony, the family oriented neighborhoods or the genuine warmth of our people. Yet how do we want the rest of the world know about us? There are conventioneers, sales/business travelers, tour groups in buses, sports teams and even weary travelers on 99, 120, 132 or the 5 who all visit can Visit Modesto. In 2018 the City of Modesto chose to reboot and relaunch Visit Modesto. In July of 2019 Visit Modesto became independent again with a new visitors center at 1008 12th Street (between J & K), some new team members and keen focus on sharing the bounties of our community. Tourism includes film crews, business conferences, tour groups from abroad, travelers to/ from Yosemite and more. They all need information about where to stay, where to eat, where to visit, what’s playing, what gallery is open, what car show is happening and how to get there. That’s where Visit Modesto comes in. The new team, lead by CEO Todd Aaronson, is hard at work rebuilding the social, digital and marketing strategy to meet the information flow of 2020 and beyond. The new Visitors Center is a restored mid-century modern building that is warm and welcoming to locals and visitors alike. Todd’s background is steeped in the hospitality industry (Westin, Fairmont, Ritz Carlton) and he’s been marketing destina-

MV: What do you see as the biggest opportunity for Modesto? TA: Honestly, we need to stop looking in the rearview mirror. No one ever saved their way to innovation. We need to look at our community and invest in the physical assets, invest in our cultural assets, invest in our people, invest in our digital/social presence, invest in education, invest in beautification. I believe we should look at our future as if Modesto is a startup and march forward with a clear vision of embracing the future while honoring our cultural and agricultural heritage. MV: This year, ModestoView did a feature on our amazing location in proximity to San Francisco and Yosemite; what kind of opportunity this presents to Modesto? http://www.modestoview.com/bigviewthe-great-outdoors/ TA: I was interviewed by Yosemite Magazine and they ran a great story about Modesto that says it well in the opening, “Stop in Modesto, half way between Yosemite and San Francisco, for a much-needed break from the car and grab a bite to eat, visit a farm stand or see a show.” Modesto should be the “home base” on everyone’s radar who is considering a northern California trip that includes San Francisco, Yosemite and Sacramento. MV: What is the value of a 3% increase in our travel and tourism? TA: Dean Runyan Associates recently completed a study that displayed county tourism as providing over 6,400 jobs, $620M in spending and over $54M in local taxes. Figure 3% growth alone provides 200 jobs, $2M to local businesses and $1.6M in tax revenue. That supports our families, our schools, our roads and much more. MV: Describe some of the plans being made for to re-launch the CVB during Modesto’s 150th Anniversary ? TA: Visit Modesto is excited about a few specific programs to promote; there’s a 150 Murals group we can promote for walking/ photo tours, there’s a history tour being developed we can promote, we are working

with a group to create 150 music events in one weekend just in downtown and more in the planning. Our marketing executive, Andres Mendez, is working with the city and local community to promote all the events that support Modesto 150 in the social and digital media. MV: Do you see that we have some really obvious assets that are attractive to the traveling public? TA: Location, Location, Location – we are truly at the heart of traveling North-South and East-West in California. Our agricultural bounty truly is ‘low hanging fruit’ and travelers should know to stop here and enjoy. Price Value – Modesto is so affordable. Our hotels offer incredible value with fantastic amenities. Our robust dining scene is not expensive plus the variety and quality of cuisine is incredible. Quality – did you know the Chevron station just off 99 on Kansas cleans the pumps, mops the pavement in front of the pumps and more at least 3 times a day? That’s the kind of quality our community offers travelers. Those types of examples are what display the humble pride of Modestans when presenting our businesses to guests. We need to promote the “little things” that make us great! MV: What fires you up about this opportunity ?

TA: We can only grow our visitor/tourism. That means we provide more jobs, which benefits the families of our community. That means more tax revenue to build on our assets. I get fired up thinking of the benefit Modesto and Modestans will receive as we grow our visitor base! MV: Describe your ideal Modesto day. TA: Morning jog on tree lined streets and down the Virginia Trail Coffee before work at any one of the great local shops Meet with at least one ‘new’ Modestan per day to learn about their perspective of our community Our staff shares a quote of the day – that’s always something I enjoy! Grab a webinar to learn something Eat local – try to hit a farmstand for something fresh to take home Have a soft drink or cocktail and hear some great local musician(s) complete my day with music. Modesto turns 150 years old this year.
Throughout 2020 as part of the Modesto 150 celebration, we will be featuring Modesto’s history all the way from the early days through today. We will try to make this interesting, fun to read, and lay it out in bite sized pieces that hopefully will encourage you to learn more at the McHenry Museum, and other history sites like HistoricModesto.com where some of these images have come from. You have heard bits and pieces about our history over the years. You have heard names like Ralston and McHenry. You see streets named Coffee, Veneman, Briggsmore, Carver and wonder who are they named after. You see power black outs in other areas of the state but why don’t we have those? What city was one of the first in the USA to have an electrical grid, or even a municipal airport? What city became the county seat, thanks to the expansion of the railroad? Modesto USA. A Classic American City.

The Railroad changed everything.
When you think about it, the railroad built the USA and created our cultures. In the 1800s, as the settlers spread west, the railroad would link both coasts of our growing country, where people moved safely cross country where just a decade earlier, it would take months and cost lives to venture west. Needless to say, gold changed California in the 1850s and mining cities like LaGrange popped up across the foothills. The regional Central Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads of Crocker, Stanford, Hopkins and Huntington, aka “the Associates” would create new cities and vital stations for goods and services. Many cities that were on the intersection of the North South and the east west railroads would become major national hubs. When the Golden Spike was hammered in 1869, transcontinental travel was born and our county would be connected. Before the railroad, there were a bunch of towns along the rivers that served as ferry stops as California started to evolve and commerce moved along the rivers. The towns of Paradise, and Adamsville located west of Modesto were early thriving settlements with river ferries. In an early bout of NIMBYism, Paradise and Empire both rejected this new “railroad”, so it was built through a new area, that would become Modesto. These towns quickly disappeared when the new town was built. The Central Pacific Railroad was built through Modesto in 1870, then an unnamed community.

Robert McHenry and William Ralston were both farmers and financiers. William Ralston was a San Francisco financier who founded the Bank of California and built the famous Palace Hotel. He also served on the Board of the Central Pacific Railroad. In the 1870s he was also part of the team that surveyed what would become Modesto Irrigation District and help pass the Congressional act of 1873 to implement irrigation and water supplies. When Modesto was to be named Ralston in his honor, he declined prompting the Spanish word for “modesty” and the city was named Modesto. He would die in 1873 following a financial collapse of his bank and empire. Robert McHenry, a descendent of the Mayflower, was born in Vermont, later moved to Ohio and then married Matlilda Hewitt of Farmington, just north of Modesto, and he began his farming and banking career building the Bald Eagle Ranch located north of what’s now Modesto. In 1883, he built the McHenry Mansion at 15th and I Street that would be one of the grandest homes in the region. With the railroad and the rivers, Modesto would grow quickly as wheat was planted we irrigation spread. Soon a wide variety of crops were growing. Located on the railroad, and now connected to Sacramento and Oakland via rail, Modesto would become fairly cosmopolitan as founders like McHenry began to expand their empires, build churches and many of the early businesses. His son Oramil would take over the business when Robert passed away in 1890 and Modesto would be begin to grow rapidly, ending the century with a population of 4,500 people. We need to preserve what little history we have left. As you can see, we lost so many of our historic structures. Many cities fight hard to preserve their old buildings and we have a project right now that needs our help. The 1915 Southern Pacific station (originally Central Pacific) is being upgraded for the upcoming ACE train service. We can upgrade safety AND keep the historic structure at the same time. – 1855 - Modesto Cemetery - 1001 Scenic – 1856 - Pioneer Cemetery - 905 Scenic – 1870 - Oldest House In Modesto is the Church House, located at 302 Burney St. It was originally built in 1868 in the former town of Paradise and then moved to Burney in 1870 after Modesto was designated the rail road path. It was built by Luke Ancil Church (December 28, 1831 – February 6, 1901), who used lumber from his hotel at Don Pedro Bar. – 1871 - The Turner Hitching Post 1104 14th 1871 – This one of the few remaining elements from the founding days you can still visit today. – 1874 – First 4th of July Parade that still runs today, thanks to the Modesto Kiwanis Club. – 1877 – Wright Irrigation Act passes paving the way for Irrigation Districts – Named for Modesto City Councilman CC Wright. – 1879 - Modesto starts to “clean up” with San Joaquin Regulators who, vigilante style, cleaned up and closed down the opium dens of Chinatown and the places of ill repute along Front St, (now 9th) and other downtown places until 1884 – 1882 - The McClure Place was built on the banks of Dry Creek in 1882 to replace an earlier home destroyed by fire in 1875. Bailey Peyton Hogin, a Confederate army veteran, who arrived in California in 1870. The farm was sold after the turn of the century (1904) to Ernest McClure. – 1883 - McHenry Mansion - The grandest of all of the homes in early Modesto, built by Robert McHenry. Take a tour today at 15th and I St. – 1884 - The first newspaper in Modesto was the Daily Evening News and would later change names and evolve to the Modesto Bee of today. – 1894 - The Modesto Herald Building - 726 10th St was built by J.D. Spencer, editor of the Modesto Daily Evening News stands today as the oldest commercial structure still housing a business – 1890 - Lish Residence, 125 Poplar Avenue, 1890 – 1886 - Modesto High School’s First Graduating Class with 10 people – 1891 - Electric lights first lit Modesto – 1880s - Modesto’s first baseball team, the Modesto Red Caps evolved from a community team that began in 1872

Hello everyone and welcome to 2020. I’m excited for a big start to the new year and am grateful to have ended 2020 with a great show at the Prospect Theatre. Thanks to everyone who came out to see any of the bands I play in over the last decade and thank you all for supporting the blues. Big news I will be going into the studio to record an album this month with Gravel & Grace with Producer John Clifton of the MoFo Party Band fame. Look for it to be released this spring. I am sure we will be doing a big release party so keep your eyes and ears peeled. Gravel & Grace will be doing a couple of shows this month too, the closest one will be at Louie’s Place over in LaGrange. I hope you are keeping your eyes peeled for fun local shows this year. I recommend checking out newcomers Western Bound, they play a variety of styles including blues and will be holding court at Bookies, Rivets and Grizzly Rock this month. and times.Don’t miss Tiffany Rose & the Outlaw Hearts at Ralston’s Goat for their first show of the year on January 4th. Roaring into a New Decade
By Middagh Goodwin It is quite hard to believe that it is the year 2020. It seems like just yesterday that many of us were celebrating a new century or were worried about Y2K. I like the rest of you do not know what the next decade has in store for us but I do know if we do not work together and support each other it will not be what it could be. I hope we will be entering a new era a 21stcentury roaring twenties. I am urging everyone in this New Year to at the very least share your fellow artist’s events, make plans to go out to them and to bring a friend or two. We all need to take ownership of our arts community for it to thrive. Over the last decade, we have lost some key live music venues, Fat Cat, Hero’s, Plea for Peace and annual events like X-Fest are no more. If we want to see new venues open and events to come back or new ones to grow we need to all support what we have. We need to show that there is a market for live independent music in Modesto and the 209. This year make a resolution to go out and support the art. Buy some merchandise, create a podcast, zine or maybe a label and put out a compi-
lation of your favorite band. Help spread the word about your favorite musicians any way you can think of. I have been spinning local music on KCBP 95.5 FM our local community radio station since the end of November, tune in to Modesto Area Music, weekly, Monday 5 pm, Friday 9 pm, and Saturday at 6 pm. Several artists are in regular rotation on the station as well. If you are interested in having your music played email beathappybooking@gmail. com and musickcbp@gmail.com. Hopefully, with regular airplay, we can help build our local music scene. Looking forward to some great events coming up this year booked by the MAMAs, Music in the Plaza, PatioFest, the Sampler, the local stage at the Stanislaus County Fair and bringing back Acoustic Christmas to the State Theatre. We hope to see you at these and many other events in the coming year.

Reflection is clarity. Sometimes. It is educational for sure. We learn a whole lot about what is important or perhaps what we should have cared about. This year Modesto celebrates 150 years. How has our city changed? How are we honoring its gifts? Our local culture defines our evolutionary identity. In 150 years have we been inclusive to diversity? Are there more businesses owned by people of color and women? Are there more spaces available for art? Have women musicians found equal opportunities and pay and sponsorship avenues? 2020... This is going to be YOUR year By Victoria Popoff
New Year, New Me! How many times have you said that as a new year has approached? We all want some type of change; less clutter, less debt, less stress, more sleep, better health, more vacation. Sound familiar? So how does REAL change happen? Change that at the end of 2020, we look back and feel great about our accomplishments? 60% of us make resolutions and research shows only 8% of us actually achieve it. Change is hard, and we start with your big goal. Write it down. You want less clutter in your home? Thats not a one-day goal. Decluttering your home is going to take time, Think about every drawer, cabinet, closet and garage. You have to break down each section, allow time, and schedule it accordingly. Any goal we want has a few elements: organization, time, scheduling, and priority. You need a plan to successfully accomplish any goal. Hence why, just writing down a resolution, without a plan, is not enough and only 8% of resolution makers actually accomplish it. So, the top three changes people usually make at the new year, are as follows:
Eat Healthier Exercise more Lose Weight
Sart with your total goal. How can you measure the goal? A percentage of body fat lost? A better HDL cholesterol number? More visits to the gym? How will you track it? Quarterly physicals? An app that you log and track your journey? A monthly check-in with your personal trainer? Break down your goal into smaller goals. Each month set a mini goal that are realistic. Then quarterly, re-asses your total goal. How close are you? Make sure your smaller goals are inching your way toward the goal of health. A few helpful hints that I have seen work is recruiting a friend to work towards the goal with you. Anytime we have accountability, or work toward a shared goal together, the likelihood of success increases. These three goals remind us, the WHY for resolutions - we want to live longer, healthier lives where we feel good. More muscle on our body, eating healthier options, and moving our body more are ways to accomplish that. But also, sleeping more, hydrating our body, and being outside will help us feel better and live longer. Don’t deny the impact of fun and play while you are on your journey of any goal as well. One thing I have found through chasing a goal, is always have a grateful heart. We won’t always be an easy path in change, you will experience some hard times, but not to allow it to derail you. Health Versus Wealth By Efren Martinez
As I’ve aged with my friends, unfortunately, I have seen more of us opting out of vacations, working more and leaving the paid daily breaks at the door. Some of us even work two jobs only so we can afford the latest and greatest tech gadgets or that big house we never spend any time in because of our commute. Sure you can afford all of that, but the price is much higher than most can imagine. Here’s an out of the box kind of thought for 2020. Why not spend all that extra time you’d be working and/or commuting and instead invest in a healthier lifestyle? Imagine this, getting up in the morning and spending time exercising instead of in the car sluggishly moving on the freeway during your morning commute for those two hours. Being home shortly after 5 pm every night to either get some fitness in before dinner or spending quality time with your family. Sure this would take a full lifestyle change from where you like to settle on not having the latest gadgets or new car. I choose health over wealth. In my life, I’ve devoted my extra time to health and a few favorable hobbies like writing for the ModestoView. My IPhone is a few years old, I don’t drive a new car, nor do I

eat out 4-6 days a week. I’m aware that this inspirational thought may not apply to you. Some of us have to work two jobs to keep food on the table, and some are single parents just getting by. I salute you, you’re a champion! Thank you for hanging in there and being proudly self-sufficient. But if you find yourself being some flexibility, think about having the courage to scale back work and invest in your health. The rewards will come in so many ways. You will live happier, longer and healthier. You will be fitter, sleep better and with all that you might even be able to kick most of those meds you may be taking for things that are making you sick. Friends, instead of going with those common un-kept New Year’s resolutions, I’d like you to think about this inspirational fitness piece for 2020. I love you all, I want you to age healthy and well with me. Do it for yourself and do it for your family. Let this new decade be known as the “Healthy 20’s” instead of the Roaring ‘20s. It’s a new decade Modesto and we are
carrying over all the excitement Modesto offered and continues to offer as we enter the 20s! Of course we all make our resolutions at this time so I would like to share mine with you. My goal for the year 2020 is minimalism. I will create minimalistic habits for myself that I hope to carry on even after the year is over. One of the biggest polluting industries in the world is fashion; we buy clothes just to decide they are not in style and throw them out a few months later. Instead, try second hand stores and maybe even clothes swaps with friends. I, personally, am in love with the new Mad Monk on Sisk Rd, Modesto. This store has such a wide selection of used clothing for every style (highly recommended!) Other minimalistic habits would be giving experiences as gifts rather
than material items. This could be taking a friend to a concert, an art class together, a hike, a ski trip... whatever you think they would like. The most significant change that is better financially and environmentally are reusables and compostables! I cannot stress enough how easy this lifestyle change is. Something as simple as a reusable water bottle or a reusable bag to bring to the grocery store with you can make a major impact. I even keep a bag of paper straws in my car so that they are always there when needed. I am going to start my 2020’s embracing ideas from the 1920’s spending time, not things on people and using resources wisely. Modesto has so much to offer to help my resolutions be successful.

Amazing, it is the year 2020! Happy New Year to you! May it bring you success, health and peace. The golden 20ties are here! 2020 is the Chinese Year of the White Metal Rat. It starts January 25th 2020 and ends February 11th, 2021. Because the rat is the first sign from the 12 animals cycle of the Chinese Astrology, 2020 is thought of as a year of new beginnings and renewals. It’s a good year for progress, exploration and insight. The number 2020 rolls off so nicely from one’s lips, it has allure and a modern ring to it. May be we will try something new, look into a new direction or improve and revamp our efforts in the areas we have been focusing on already. Hey, how about 20/20 vision? That means we are all going to see better, right? With the Rat setting the mode of operation for this year that may be quite possible. I read in my Handbook of Chinese Astrology that “Business will be on the upswing”, it will be a good time to make long-term investment plans with an eye to survival and an ability to sense danger which are qualities that the rat is known to be very good at. But we will have fun too. The year of the
