Happy New Year!

Stating the obvious, it is January 2022. This time last year, we and me personally were down for the COVID count, and didn’t have a January issue. So we were exited about building this new 2022 edition. I thought after 2020, 2021 would be amazing but it was a sequence of starts and stops, but 2022 really feels like it is time for a reboot. We are still dealing with COVID in many varieties and this current wave we are in is throwing us all off, but now that there is a pill on the horizon, home testing is available and the people that care about community and others are vaccinated, there may be chance that this year we get a chance to have a real reset, a reboot, and a restart that actually gets off the ground. It’s totally in our hands to get this right. Is it possible that we will celebrate May the 4th together, Love Modesto downtown, ride our bikes to the different houses on Porchfest and hang out at MoBand and Music in the Plaza? This could be our year to get this back. Graffiti Summer is scheduled to be back in June and we should see some great progress on the Graffiti USA Museum. We have had nearly two years to recalibrate and decide what Modesto can be. Now we need to do it. BUT, if we make plans, let’s do them. We have a Downtown Master Plan that reimagined a 9th and J as a new gateway for Ace Train, but all we got was a

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

drive-through Starbucks, no housing or building up. This plan also included a new downtown ballpark and that is now on deck. We will do it right and build it so many groups can use it? The thing that always seems get lost is downtown housing. True vibrancy will evade us unless our plans for people of all income levels to live and exist in downtown, near jobs, freeway, train and our center core come to life. Let’s stay focused. One thing we do know, our road is going forward. It may be a long and winding road and we will have to adjust, but forward we go, pressing into the future. Maybe the wishes and dreams we had on New Year’s Day in 2019 will come back into view, and we can try again to make the best future we can. I reached out to many of my local friends that are making good things happen to get their reboot and you will find many of their stories in this issue. Now, more than ever, we need teamwork, good cooperation and smart directions. We need all of you. Speaking of teamwork, THANK YOU to our Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group team. ModestoView would not be possible without the support of SPWG. Our warehousing and logistics team has been working so hard through this pandemic, keeping the food industry supply chain moving and just recently, our hard working team helped deliver Christmas and helped keep the shelves stocked and packages delivered on time. You hear all the bad stuff in the supply chain, but there are local companies making good things happen. Speaking of local companies; ModestoView is 100% local and it’s for you. A lot of people come up to me and tell me how they really appreciate that we are constantly delivering great local news and information that is 100% positive. This is fantastic and our readership truly represents the best people our region that care about making a positive difference in our community. If you are a local business, these are the people you want to reach and ModestoView is the

best way to reach them. When you advertise with ModestoView in these pages, your ad is prominently featured, you don’t get swiped or scrolled by, your message gets read. That’s how you find new customers. We need our local businesses to advertise in these pages so we can design, print and distribute what we think is the best thing printed in our area each month, and found 24/7 online at ModestoView.com and @modestoview on the socials. Please consider joining our team and your message will actually make Modesto better. Email me at advertising@ modestoview.com to get started. Looking forward to seeing all of you out and about and the many things we should all be able to share in this year. Our intrepid editor Middagh Goodwin has compiled a list of the things that should be back on deck this year, community health willing. If you have a community event, please let us know at events@modestoview.com I look forward to a good 2022 with my wife Becky, my family, our grandson Jamie and my friends. I do hope to see you out and about, listening to music and enjoying what our community has to offer. With gratitude, Chris Murphy Founder & Publisher, ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

On the Go for 2022

2022 Todd Aaronson

Want the definition of free money? It’s people visiting Modesto and spending their money here. Yes friends, this is the alchemy of the 21st century Modesto. We have the businesses, the downtown, the performing arts, the history spots and an amazing location. What does that get us? Access to people that are visiting, either to a local business where they fill our hotels and restaurants, visiting friends, also hotels along with theatres, restaurants and museums. There are also tourists on the way to somewhere else and find Modesto to be a valuable way point, but instead of just waiting for people to drop by, we have a local organization that is aggressively marketing

asked our CEO Todd Aaronson about his optimism for 2022 Todd Aaronson: As we prepare to step into 2022 there are choices; we can look back, we can look just in front of us stepby-step or we can look far forward and seek opportunities on the horizon. At Visit Modesto we are looking towards the horizon and the endless possibilities that can benefit the Hospitality Industry in our region while sharing the many reasons to

to people and organizations to visit. With a strategic and measurable ad campaign, in print, social and digital, Visit Modesto has changed the game and is delivering solid results. This is an example of money well spent with programs like MoCheer for the holidays, Almond Blossom tours and Graffiti Summers that attract people from around the world, good things are happening. I serve as the Chair of the Visit Modesto Board of Directors and we

“Visit Modesto”! There’s the Almond Blossom Cruise coming up from mid-February through mid-March where we’ll release an audio guided tour with interviews, fun history, contests and much more to welcome visitors coming from near and far. There’s the return of the Modesto Marathon in April where we’ll be celebrating all things outdoors in the region from running to cycling, from fishing to kayaking and from hiking to long walks in Modesto’s great parks. After that we’ll be launching a celebration of stone fruit and the bounty of the agricultural heart here in California and how that translates to an incredible food culture. Then there will be a revitalized and modernized Graffiti Week followed by the Furiously Fast Weekend. Not to mention our goal of launching in the spring a bi-weekly celebration of local music that will rotate around Modesto on Wednesday nights (more on that later). And that just gets us halfway through the year! So, even though the past two years have worn many out emotionally, we recognize that nothing will ever be the same as it was. That’s why at Visit Modesto we are looking forward with fresh ideas and a fresh attitude to tell the world about Modesto and the incredible region we call home.

POET VIEW YOU MAKE IT A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Salvatore Salerno, Poet Laureate of Modesto Bring out those whistles and bells, Pour the champagne and raise your glass, Ring out the battered, bedraggled Old Year, Cheer for 12 months that you can make new! Out with the false, and in with the true! Believe in what actually happens And not in that unproven chatter. Act upon choices that help all of us; This world is worthy of more than just you. Out with the bad, and in with the good! Don’t rush out to put up your fists, But reach out to offer your hands. Act with patience and care, just as if You’re part of Modesto’s neighborhood. Out with the ugly, and in with the fair! Plant a garden made from your style, Donate some goods or clean up a trail. Beauty your life for others to share, As you do for trees, your water and air. Go, sing and play some welcome-in tunes, Gather your family and friends once again, Send out that broken-down, bad Old Year, And do better yourself for Two-Oh-Two-Two!

New Begginings

By Jim Christiansen

New beginnings and Auld Lang Syne. 2022 is here, but first, wrap up old business from 2021. Iconic venue Barkin Dog Grill has hosted its last art on the walls with the announced closing in December. Hanibal Yadegar has been a stalwart supporter of the arts in downtown Modesto for 17 years. Barkin Dog will be sorely missed for the music, poetry, art and photography, community events as much as the loss of great milkshakes, variety of hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches. Home away from home for the Ernie Bucio band, long time spot for Blue Monday jam, MOST Poetry 2nd Tuesday nights. I did a lot of sharpie drawings and sketches of staff, players, bands, and patrons, that we began to hang on the walls in the hallway, bathrooms finally peeking out into the main room as we turned the corner over the drinking fountain. Chris Murphy, Mark Navarro, Sarah Machado among the other sharpie artists. Hanibal had a slew of drawings by young patrons decorating the walls of his office. Many artists hung on the special art display panels over the years, along with the collection of concert photographs, special photo collection of music greats and the Adrian Mendoza photo tapestry. An art walk spot for many years with a featured artist, dinner and music. Barkin Dog Grill closing is our Auld Lang Syne nostalgia note for ArtView. January 15 is the final deadline for the 2022 Stanislaus Artist Open Studio weekend. April 23 and 24 are the new Open Studio visiting dates. Return to the Spring Schedule will be FREE admission, with printed maps and online maps available in March for route planning. The first show for Mistlin Gallery is “Abstracts, Impressions and Fantasy.” This is a Central California Art Association member show, with juried entries, and some prizes to be awarded for Third Thursday Art Walk, including a People’s Choice award. I was surprised to get in five out of five entries into the show, which is an open category, so should be an interesting display of anything but realism on the walls. The Third Thursday Art Walk is Janu-

It is that time of year where it is sometimes too cold for the sidewalk displays, but you may see them in the area of Tresetti’s and Preservation Coffee. Beads of Contentment, Intrinsic Elements, Papachino’s and Picasso’s Gourmet Deli and Gallery also good stops when in the art blocks downtown. During December Art Walk, I found the trio of Gary Nelson, Patty Castillo-Davis and Steve Ashman

LOW KEY By Chris Murphy Photos By MJ Mangano and Low Key Cam Low Key Saloon is one of Modesto’s coolest reboots. The White Hawk lounge had been around forever it seems. At the beginning of the COVID, this long-time watering hole, loaded with regulars, was transformed into a cool 70s vibe modern dive bar called Low Key. One of Modesto’s promotional, bar and restaurant experts and former Fly Boys founder, Clint Shaw brought his theme and management skills to the partnership of James Marsden and Seth Bassett. Throughout the starts and stops of COVID, LowKey began to thrive again, and even recently bringing their dance party nights and karaoke back. Now where is this cool place? If you remember the Heat Wave skateboard park that was in the parking lot of Beno’s, the iconic Modesto department store that was

8

in the same location where the WalMart Supercenter is on North McHenry. Take the road that used to go back to the theatre and Low Key is there. It brings back great memories be in that space where Modesto’s skate scene thrived in the 70s. Now it is a cool dive bar, with a retro Americana theme. Other thing that makes Low Key cool is that it is “veteran owned”. Owner/Partner and Modesto native James Marsden is a proud Marine and he makes sure that Low Key is a veteran friendly place to hang out. Look for many vets events throughout the year and make sure you speak up if you are a vet. James grew up here locally and wants to make sure that this is a local friendly place where people can be comfortable and welcome.

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

One of the best things about Low Key is the regulars that mix with the new fans. Even more than that, Becky Bean has been bartending in this space for over 15 years. Her relationship with her long time customers rubs off on the new people that are joining and are expanding the family. She quickly pours your regular cocktails with ease, delivers the craft cocktails in a breeze and is quick to make sure your cold tap beer is full. There are so many options at this full service bar. When you’re not tipping your pint, Low Key has the fun games like pool and darts to help make your days more fun. DJ Tease spins regularly there along with DJ Dade, DJ Suga Shane and others. Better dress to impress as the Low Key Dance cam is always checking out the action and you can

be social famous @lowkey209. They also have the rum I like and hope to see you there at the bar.

MAMA VIEW A recent post on social media stated the importance of a professional headshot when booking comedy gigs, of course, this is true for any performer aspiring to do more than open mic nights. Now no one is saying to go out and spend thousands or even hundreds of dollars on promo photos(but if you have that kind of money I will put you in contact with our very own MJ Mangano). We are talking for comedians and solo acts a clean shot torso up and for bands one that has you all looking in the same direction and looking well, like a band. something that will represent you on flyers, newspaper articles, ads etc. Make sure you have high resolutions files of these that can be downloaded or sent to bookers and press alike along with any logos or samples of what you do, songs for bands, and short clips for comedians. All at the highest quality you can create and afford. Musicians, it is better to have a single song well recorded than 10 that are not. Comedians work on getting a good video that showcases what you can do. Creating a Youtube channel is not necessary but if you do have one make sure that it has

New Years Resolutions By Middagh Goodwin

quality content(that goes for all your social media). You want to represent yourself in the most professional way you can. As you get more gigs and have more money, invest it on better promotional material be it headshots or band photos, recorded music and videos. For musicians, good video content is essential these days. Bookers want to see how well you perform and the crowd interaction. These are the things that not just bookers and promoters see first but also your potential fans. You can print up extra photos to sell or give away to fans, videos and music can be great perks if you have a Patreon or to give them an idea of what they can expect from live shows. One more thing that is a big help not just to bookers but to your fans and the press alike; make sure your events are updated on your social media. I personally input all the local gigs in the ModestoView calendar and it is the same thing every month trying to track down dates before we go to print. Often times I do not see event details until the day of. Let us help you promote and give your fans a chance to plan on going to see you.

ROCKABILLY VIEW

Rockabilly Rumble

By Chris Murphy

2022 is going to be a Rockin’ year here in Modesto USA. Our Rockabilly heritage is known around the world and for the last few months, the scene is jumping back to life with our monthly shows, rumbles and rampages at the Speakeasy Bar on 12th Street thanks to Tony Trevino. Great bands like the Rocketz, Infamous Swanks, Hotel Circle and more have been ripping it up building back the foundation with ModestoView, Tony Trevino Barber, Modesto Area Music Association and other local supporters. This month, it will be jammin’ on January 29th with System 86, the Pendletons and the return of the Rocketz who have been hitting it hard on the road. This will be a night of amazing Rockabilly, dancing and of course, great kickin’ fashion. So get it going, bring your hot rod and let’s make the Speakeasy a rockin’ and rollin’ place on January 29th . Look for more Rockabilly coming this season and we are gearing up for some larger venues and bigger national acts and the Wild Records artists. We hope to create a Rockabilly festival this season and hope you can join us and be a part of this. Learn more about our Rockabilly history at www.modestomusichistory.com and in the pages of ModestoView. Stay up to date at www.modestoview.com and on our socials at @modestoview

Things to Ignore Virtual Reality. Really? Why?

We need a more connected soc iety, not a more detached one. Pokemon GO is good as it encour ages people to get out and blend their realities with a real reality. My plan is to stay even more connected to the rea l world, as the virtual world will not exist without a real pla net with real food and real people. Make sense?

G O Modesto! Winter Blues

Blues guitarist Tommy Castro is performing with his band the Painkillers on January 15 at the State Theatre and it is a not to miss blues experience. Since his solo debut in 1994, he’s made 16 albums-the last seven for Alligator-each its own unique chapter in the book of Tommy Castro. Ranging from horn-fueled R&B to piping hot blues to fiery, stripped-down rock ‘n’ roll, each release is solidly built upon Castro’s unshakable musical foundation-a dynamic mix of 1960s-influenced guitarfueled blues, testifying Memphis-soaked blue-eyed soul and Latin-tinged East San Jose funk, all driven by Castro’s grab-you-by-the-collar vocals and passionate guitar work. Castro will be joined by AJ Crawdaddy(some may know him from his early 80s stint in Poco). Go to thestate.org

F

W E I V OOD By Chris Murphy

One of north-east Modesto’s favorite places is getting a new groove for 2022 and beyond. The Twisted Pig has new owners, a new vision and a new menu under development that will make it more appealing to more people. Thom Guerrero and James Marsden and Seth Bassett teamed up with long-time Modesto bar and restaurateur and promoter Clint Shaw to take Twisted Pig to a new place, building on the current success of Low Key Bar and seeing opportunity to be a full service restaurant with expanded dinner menus and an expanded space. New partner Thom is a regional mortgage broker who has really become involved in this community and was a fan and regular at Twisted Pig. He has a great network of friends and a focused vision that have encouraged this new move. His family is from Southern California and have restaurants so it is in his blood. James Marsden, (not the actor, but he does say the confusion is welcome) is a local Modestan going to school in the same neighborhood at Somerset and Beyer. He served our country in the Marines and has a passion for great customer and food service. Clint Shaw makes sure everything runs right, ensures that everything is well branded and each experience is an event that’s somethin people will remember and come back for. New chapter openings and renovation have begun, with plans to join the two dining rooms, bring more live music and fun events like karaoke nights. One of the big plans will be to expand the dinner menu with new and tasty entrees like the Pasta and Potato Alfredo. The team is working on new entrees that will appeal to families and offer a wide variety and a nice multi course dinner experience and you may even see a kids menu. “We wanted to

12

Twisted Pig 2.0

move beyond a neighborhood bar and really start serving great meals that everyone can enjoy” explains James Marsden. The amazing pork and burgers that are the foundation of the Twisted Pig are front and center too. These are big, hearty burgers, and with an appetizer menu that will satisfy everyone. Plus, did I mention tots? Yes, amazing tots. One of the things has not changed is the man behind the bar, Griffin Dye. W E I Dillon Olvera V R E T CEO Beard Land IN

By Chris Murphy For years and years, we have heard about new visioning processes, big urban redesign plans and paths forward. Some good things have happened, but most of them by accident. Not since Stanislaus County and the City of Modesto worked together to build 10th St Plaza and change the direction of downtown Modesto, have we really had a plan that is embraced by a diverse group of stakeholders. This time, there is a good chance the outcome will be different. A new generation of planners are at the table now. As a person that has been on these “visioning” teams before, it can be pretty frustrating to see the resulting inaction. Currently, we had a whole Downtown Master plan, where people wanted downtown multistory housing with retail below, and so far, we only got ourselves a drive through Starbucks where a multi story development should have been. Can it be different this time? There are talks about a downtown ballpark complex, but a true plan should be even bigger, jobs, infrastructure, training and so much more. Opportunity Stanislaus has teamed up with the Stanislaus Community Foundation to gather a group to work on a 2030 plan. Presentations have been made to key stakeholder groups, but for this to really work, more people need to be brought in to make it a success. One of the key companies at the table is Beard Land Improvement Company. Despite their land grant projects in the 1800s, the company was formed in 1909. In a sense, it was actually one of the first companies to expand out of Modesto, connecting the Union Pacific (then Central Pacific) to the Santa Fe, now the BNSF with passenger rail service connecting Empire where their industrial land there. Today, Beard Land is the leading industrial park serving Modesto’s largest companies. Dillon Olvera became CEO in 2018 and has become one of Modesto’s leaders for job creation and industrial planning. Dillon is an active swim and waterpolo parent and

lives in Turlock with this wife and family. Let’s learn what Dillon is working on. ModestoView: Why do you think it is so important to have a vision and a blueprint for the future. Dillon Olvera: In order to execute on anything, you have to a vision and a plan. Why are we here? What are we trying to solve for? Our community’s future shouldn’t be different than what we do in for our business. In our business, we have a vision and a plan. Every employee needs to know what we stand for, and also know the blueprint, or plan to achieve. The blueprint/plan should be measurable and allow us to determine what defines success and achievement. MV: What are the elements that are currently missing in our planning?

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

DO: Having a few specific areas of focus helps. Sometimes plans are too overwhelming and become unachievable if they include dozens of elements or too many areas of focus. In addition, the planning needs to come together quickly, have assigned stakeholders, and have the resources and funding to implement. These elements are included in the planning related to Stanislaus 2030. MV: Why is it so important to get many groups to agree on a direction? DO: We live in a diverse community, and we need the entire community to define areas of direction and then implement them together. Leaving a group out, or behind, limits the benefit for the community. Uplifting an underdeveloped group within our community benefits the entire community.

MV: How does the Modesto / Stanislaus area continue to be the leader in agribusiness as we take a bigger role in supply chain. DO: Agriculture is the leading traded sector in the Stanislaus area. That said, we should be on the forefront of Agriculture technology and possible reuses of agriculture byproducts. MV: What are the skills that are most needed in our work force? DO: Given our large agricultural and manufacturing sectors, there is a high demand for mechanical skill sets and technological professionals that can assist with the growth of our agricultural industry. MV: What are the obstacles to new company attraction that we need to solve? DO: We need to expand our existing workforce pool, and develop more people into value-add employees. We also need to consider offering significant tax incentives to attract business from outside the area. MV: Is there a silver bullet in your recommendations? DO: I think we have a couple of silver bullets. The first is funding. Funding is the difference this time around. There are significant funds coming into the county and cities from the America Rescue Plan Act, and specific dollars have already been set aside for economic and workforce development. In addition, there are opportunities to get additional state and federal funding. The other bullet is the engagement of the Brooking Institution, a Washington D.C. based consulting firm that has been very successful in putting development plans together for communities all over the nation. The Stanislaus 2030 project is slated to put specific plans in place with specified resources needed to implement these plans. MV: Modesto / Stanislaus is unique that we are less dependent on the bay area economy, how do we maintain this ? DO: We don’t want to be a bedroom community for the bay area. This doesn’t help us, we need to have something unique to our region. The obvious area is around agriculture, but other areas of expertise can be derived as well. MV: CEOs choose to locate companies on more than just available land. What are the attributes about our community that make this the most attractive to a potential new company? DO: Although there are many companies looking to leave California for a variety of reasons, they will not be able to replicate the beauty and weather in California.

FOR MORE MODESTO INFO: www.modestoview.com

Northern California is still more affordable than other areas in California. Stanislaus is a very desirable location, with the proximity to our agriculture, Yosemite, Sierra Mountains, and the coast-line makes this area very attractive. MV: What do you think we need most to encourage our young people to return after college? DO: In order to attract young people with degrees, we need more good paying jobs, and jobs with promising or potential growth. In addition, our community lacks young firms, companies that have been in business between 0-10 years. These companies typically have higher paying / more promising jobs and are more attractive to young people. MV: What do you enjoy most about living and working here? DO: This is home for me! I’m very fortunate to have a lot of family and friends here. Vacations outside the area are fun and easy to get to. A few years ago, my wife and kids skied at Bear Valley for the last two days of the season, then we loaded up and spent the next several days at the beach, confirming that we are about two hours from the mountains and two hours from the ocean. MV: Our cultural scene is pretty amazing, what can we do to make it even more important to our future? DO: We can make it easier to access and have more of it! I am really excited about the new Children’s Museum and Graffiti Museum that are coming soon! MV: Beatles or Stones? DO: The Beatles of course, they changed music forever! You can learn more about the Stanislaus 2030 Blueprint and the process at https:// www.stanislaus2030.com/ Learn more about Beard Land Development at www.beardland.com/

Reboot / Resolutions

Whatever plans we had for 2022 are all different now. We have had nearly two years to recalibrate what our community can be. Now that we have all worked from home, rediscovered our local treasures, found the excitement of a local staycation, and have apps for nearly anything, how do we take our new learnings and jump forward? One thing we do know, that if we reinvest locally make something great, we all win. There are more tools and opportunity for those on the streets and those that can choose to be where they want to be will choose to be here. Vibrancy, jobs, infrastructure, housing and culture make a great city that will thrive into the future. So we reached out to our friends and colleagues for direction and what they are optimistic for in 2022 and how will we reboot / restart differently?

I feel a sense of optimism that comes with change. Good or bad, change is a constant. It’s my hope that as a community, we use this moment as an opportunity to reflect, mend a few fences (literally and figuratively) and use what we’ve learned over the past few years to be kinder, more compassionate, and maybe most importantly - able to become something new and different than before. As a community, for us to rally together is key, and could even make us stand out in the best of ways. I do feel a real sense of optimism about what’s next. But I truly believe in order for our community to thrive, we must come together in a time of increasing separation all around us. We can be different than the others, and a great role model for other communities that have similar challenges

After two years living in a pandemic mindset dominated by fear and uncertainty, I am optimistic that our community will emerge stronger and more resilient in 2022. The transition to an “endemic mindset”— where we learn to live and manage COVID variants, will be a healthy and positive change. In a recent survey, 72% of moviegoers indicated being “comfortable or somewhat comfortable” attending movies right now, an encouraging statistic that bodes well for the new year. The State Theatre will continue to follow county safety protocols that protect the health of our patrons and delivers entertaining cinema and live performances reflecting our commitment to excellence in cultural, educational, and entertainment experiences.

Many things will improve not only Downtown, after many years of planning the new Courthouse has begun construction. ACE train service to Modesto connecting a fast and reliable transportation to the East bays day cities in between will become a reality. We will also have two new features to our City, one a new concept for our youth a Children’s Museum and our Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum complete with street scenes of vintage downtown Modesto, Radio Station, Record Store, simulated DriveIn Theater, Event Center, Classic Car Sales and Education Center, Gift Shop and 50’s style Diner. Change is hard for some however easier for others. Conquering Obstacles, Visioning, Internal, and Destiny. Normality is gone, which helps us create a new beginning of innovation, mentally, physically and economically. We now have to think outside of the box and rearrange our lives and expand our thinking. We are a resilient people there is no challenge to hard for us to overcome or conquer. When we as a people see a mountain we not only get to the top but we go to the other side because we are the people white, black, brown, Jew and gentile large and small, with means or without. We are many communities but yet one community. United and divided but one people with one purpose to rise from any and all ashes and build are tomorrow on Yesterdays’ platform. Normality is gone but perseverance will take us into 2022 with renewed purpose and passion to become a better community without walls and without fences. We may wear masks but we know who we are, our identities are set and our purpose is clear ,we keep moving forward and we never stop growing our families our friends and our neighbors, because we are stronger together. I expect 2022 to start off pretty badly, but end better than 2021. I think we are all waiting for someone to say, hey things are normal now, but they probably won’t for a while. I think that by summer things should get even more normal, but if we are thinking 2022 is just going to be normal like nothing happened I think that we are mistaken. At this point omicron hasn’t landed in Stanislaus County yet, but I am certain it will in the next several weeks. If the numbers from South Africa are any indication it will take about 90 days to run its course. As far as my events go, at this point I am planning to do Taco Fest in May, but that is it for now. I might build up to Lucky Fest in 2023, but I am not sure.

Stanislaus Community Foundation As I look to 2022, my optimism is tinged with realism. After the hard lessons of 2020, many of us began this past year with anticipation and even glee. And yet here we are, two years into the pandemic and facing challenges as a nation and as a civil society. So while I’m looking forward to the next year, I also am taking what I’ve learned forward in new ways. As an individual, I commit to listen more, and speak less. I commit to holding my expectations or assumptions lightly, but holding my boundaries strongly. I commit to love reality, just the way it is, even as I seek to change it for those who are suffering. As an organization, Stanislaus Community Foundation is committed to working with our many partners on boosting educational outcomes through the Cradle to Career Partnership and advancing our economy through the Stanislaus 2030 initiative. We’re committed to supporting our nonprofits through continued philanthropic funding, and supporting young leaders through the Next Gen on Board program as well as the Youth Empowerment Blueprint. After two hard years of lessons, our optimism and realism are still rooted in love for our community.”

Ben Balsbaugh - PMZ

Porchfest Sam Pierstorff Ninja Poet, MJC English Professor

It’s easy to be discouraged by the political divisiveness, the violence, and the fatalism that permeate our society, especially in the wake of a pandemic. But also, in spite of all of this or because of all this, when I go downtown now, order a cup of coffee, and say good morning to a few friends before I start my work day, I notice that we linger longer, we smile more, and we feel grateful for the moment in a way that we never did before. So that’s what I look forward to in 2022: the little things. More billiards with friends, more dates with my wife, more trips to the State Theatre. Small, intimate moments like these can no longer be taken for granted. So my wish for 2022 is for all of us to gain the perspective necessary to live happily no matter how chaotic the world becomes.

Life is fragile and fleeting. We have been reminded of this over the past couple of years. Many have lost loved, and many are caring for loved ones. As we enter 2022, maybe we should tiptoe, so it doesn’t see us coming. Or maybe we should go into it with confidence and a feeling of gratitude. Let’s smile more. We know smiling releases endorphins into our brain that makes us happier and less stressed. So why don’t we do it more? We get so wrapped up in our daily grinds we forget to take a moment and smile. Smile at a stranger for no reason at all. I like to begin each day by writing down 3 things I am grateful for. Today, I am grateful for coffee, the rain and my son. What are you grateful for? Just think, if we all did this every day what kind of world would we live in, regardless of things out of our control?

We’ve been at it for a while now, learning how to navigate this pandemic. We see unfiltered what we must do to stay healthy, stay employed and stay sane. I learned that this deadly global threatening virus didn’t do much to stop the greasy, sweaty, underhanded loopholes so that a dollar might still be made and self-serving gains to be had. There was plenty of gratitude and looking out for one’s fellow man, but, hiding in plain sight the egocentricity behind the deeds spoke volumes. It’s ok to elevate others for no reason and be anonymous about it. I know plenty of folks who do just that. 2022 is the fresh start. 2022 will be the proving ground. Everyone, even the fortunate, got the crap beat out of them, in all kinds of ways. I’m not a master of anything, I am no CEO or legacy trust fund person- all I have is this heart and this voice. I’ll be using this for change. I will be of service in all the ways

I can. You can too. You have gifts. Take some time to sit in the quiet and ponder about what you have to share. Start by getting vaccinated so that you might give the gift of safety and life to others. See yourself in your neighbor and imagine what it would take to create something better for them or to alleviate some of their suffering. Use mindful discovery to learn about inequities in the community and ask questions. I am a musician. It’s the only thing I got. It’s everything I am. I can make a difference. Let’s partner together to bring happiness and balance and justice and peace to this place and fill in the blanks born of deficiency and indifference. Many of you have heard me say, “ If I could write the big fat check I would.” I am a musician. It’s the only thing I got. But, it’s enough. Your gifts matter. But, only if you share them.

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

With the New Year of 2022 officially here, that means that 2021 is in the history books! Many of us hoped that 2021 would allow us to get back to some semblance of pre-pandemic life, but with 2022 now underway, we will hopefully have the resources and community support to get things going again in a safe and healthy matter. As we move into 2022, and as things hopefully continue to safely return, Modestans have an opportunity to re-commit to civic engagement and re-engage our passions in the community – both for continued city planning and for local landmark preservation. Using the start of the new year as a point of reflection and optimistic planning, we can see plenty of opportunities for the community and the City to commit to preservation efforts and to keep the overall conversation of preservation active. The City of Modesto Landmark Preservation Commission has not met recently, but hopefully 2022 will allow for the business of the Commission to carry on and for opportunities to arise where community members can present potential considerations for city efforts. Modesto has a wonderful list of designated city landmarks, all with their own unique contributions to Modesto’s history and the lives of prior generations. One of these places, McClure Country Place built in 1882 and designated a landmark in 1991, has spent the last several years being fenced off with conditions that have deteriorated putting the structure at risk. This landmark home, with its long local history, deserves a new lease on life and has the potential to become a true showpiece of civic pride. With the variety of architectural styles and rich history in Modesto, there are many buildings in the city not deemed landmarks that have important contributions to the progression of our city and our community fabric. With the ongoing master planning

of downtown underway, the handful of buildings dotting the Modesto skyline not currently designated as landmarks warrant the attention and appreciation they deserve as local historical structures. For instance, the Beaty Building has been at the heart of downtown since the 1920’s, was the first building in Modesto to have an elevator and was one of the most modern buildings in the Valley at the time. Modesto’s Fire House Number 1, built in 1939, is the City’s oldest firehouse in use and the only one with a functional fire pole. These places, and others like them, are tangible parts of Modesto’s history that have lasted and remained part of the Modesto story today. Some structures that passionate community members love may not meet the checklist of requirements for formal landmark designation, but even then, there ought to be a way for these iconic sites to be acknowledged and protected for their contributions to the lives and memories of Modestans. From past experience, great strides and successes have been made when there are group partnerships to formulate and energize preservation efforts. As we start of 2022 with fresh eyes and optimism, take a moment to think about the places in Modesto that meant something to you growing up, or a building that caught your eye when you first moved here – chances are there are others like you with the same appreciation and desire to see it saved. And so it goes another year laid to rest full of Christmas cheer and resolutions on that list checking it twice and seeing who’s been naughty or nice. A lot of change in our lives, business, and music. Shout out to Hanibal Yategar of Barking Dog Grill who closed his doors. Greetings and Happy New Year Cats and Kittens,

Als and Sals and Guys and Gals and all of the rest of our friends that love our Modesto Graffiti Culture. Here we are in 2022, revving our engines and getting ready to start building the Graffiti USA Museum. This will be a place to celebrate our classic car culture and the rock and roll spirit that made American Graffiti one of the great movies of all time and put Modesto USA on the map. So much as happened at the museum during 2021. Much if it seems invisible as the walls have seismic reinforcement, the old tiles are out, the 90 year old wiring has been removed and replaced and there is even a new sewer line and new water connections. All of these contributions are amazing, but now it is time to start the creative part and we need you. We need your donations, we need your creativity, we need your sponsorship as we start to work on air conditioning, building our new Classic 10th St scene, developing our Classic Diner and begin selling and consigning Classic Cars. There is so much to do that needs your help. You can donate your car, your time, your money and help us build this dream that will inspire and educate our own local people and attract people to visit Modesto from around the world. This is one risky column to write this month. Here we are, crossing the threshold into 2022 and we are still figuring out what the immediate future of larger events in our community and other gatherings. The Gallo Center, State Theatre and the Prospect have specific mask and vaccination requirements. Please check with these venues so you know how to prepare. Right off the bat this year, are a couple of offerings from Opera Modesto. 2022 could really be their year and Roy Stevens and the crew were very active through COVID, even making an award winning opera film, and then doing some really cool shows that are making opera pretty accessible here in Modesto. This month there are two performances at the State Theatre with their annual Story Into Song Literacy Initiative at The State Theater on January 8th & 9th at 2:00 pm. BLESS ME, ULTIMA is based on the famous “Chicano” novel by Rudolfo Anaya, which is read by students in high schools across the country. DULCINEA is based on DON QUIXOTE DE LA MANCHA, by Miguel Cervantes. The opera about a boy who doesn’t want to read the book and has it come to life in his dreams, is by the leading European composer (from Spain), Mauricio Sotelo. Performed in Spanglish and Spanish, the two operas star a diverse cast of national level leads combined with recent and current students from Modesto Junior College, CSU Stanislaus, CSU Sacramento, CSU Fresno and San Jose State University. Ticket range from $25-40 and student tickets (with ID) are $20 and can be purchased at www.thestate.org Mother of the Maid by Jane Anderson is story of Joan of Arc’s mother, a sensible, hard-working, God-fearing peasant woman whose faith is upended as she deals with the baffling journey of her odd and extraordinary daughter. An epic tale told through an unexpected and remarkable perspective, highlighting not only the conflicts that divide mothers and daughters but also the profound bonds that unite them. Food Indulgences By Efren Martinez

As the New Year starts so do the resolutions for living a healthier life. Unfortunately many won’t always succeed in their resolutions. Why? Most of the time it’s because we bite off more than we can chew. No pun intended. It’s like this, we are all so

gun-ho with losing weight and exercising regularly that we do it for the wrong reason. We want to look our best, maybe in those skinny jeans. In fact, a great deal of us put the healthy lifestyle pretty much in the backseat with mainly focusing on the vanity part. This type of extreme could be one of the core reasons why so many of us fail after just the third week into the New Year. A key component in this way of thinking usually consists of depriving ourselves of the simple pleasures in life. I’m talking about great tasting food. So my advice to you is to go easy on those healthy resolutions. Start and/or continue your exercise programs but don’t over-commit yourself. It should not consume your entire life. Remember it’s not a mortal sin if you skip a workout. Just hit it a bit harder the next time around. Another great reminder is to always have your rewards and cheat days. Reward yourself with some of life’s simple pleasures after you’ve put in the 5 day fitness week. For my simple pleasure, it would be taking my wife to our “inspiration point”. Unlike the Happy Day’s kind of Inspiration Point mine would be at Rite Aid. I’d be sitting in the parking lot enjoying some good old fashion Thrifty Ice Cream. So if you ever see me just chill’n in the Rite Aid parking lot, don’t come kick’n if you see me lick’n, Happy New Year!

THE BIG YEAR by Aaron Rowan

Happy New Year, dear reader. In the world of birding, there is an annual contest called the “Big Year.” You may have seen the Steve Martin/Jack Black film about this challenge to spot as many species of birds as possible over the course of the calendar year. In the world of live music, every year is a Big Year for me as I strive to support as many songbirds as I can. Someone actually had the nerve to say to me at one point, “You go to too many things!” Even during the still-somewhat-barren year of 2021, I enjoyed an average of over one music event per week between attending and hosting, and I’m ready to do it all over again. I would encourage and challenge you to do likewise. Look beyond whatever normal local venue or artist you might gravitate towards, and seek out some fresh talent to listen to. A venue like the Gallo Center may get most of the press, but it has been my experience that many of the most interesting musical experiences in town take place at out-of-the-way locations. And those independent programs need your practical support now more than ever. Two excellent presentations you might start with are happening in the second weekend of January. First up, it’s a double feature brought to you by Opera Modesto, continuing its Story Into Song Literacy Initiative with a pair of one-act operas based on classic novels. BLESS ME ULTIMA is a chamber opera commissioned by OpMo, adapted from the book of the same name by Rudolfo Anaya, and this world premiere will be performed in Spanglish. DULCINEA is a reimagining of Cervantes’ ‘Don Quixote,’ making its U.S. premiere here, and will be sung in Spanish. Both works will be staged back to back on both Saturday & Sunday, Jan. 8-9 at 2:00 pm, at the historic State Theatre. Tickets $25-$40 / info at www.operamodesto.org. FOLLOW US:

Then on Sunday 1/9, the San Fransisco Yiddish Combo make their Modesto debut. This ensemble is made up of classically trained musicians who enjoy stretching musical boundaries, presenting their own unique blend of Klezmer mixed with years of experience in the jazz, blues, folk, and even hip-hop worlds. They’re fronted by Rebecca & Jason of Dirty Cello, who are no strangers to Modesto or my own series, but this will be my first time experiencing this band project and I anticipate an explosive start to the concert year with them. The show starts at 3 PM at Congregation Beth Shalom, 1705 Sherwood Ave. Tickets run $10-$25, available at www.cbsmodesto.org/ concert-series. Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. Mural Tour of Downtown Modesto

Take a walking or, even better, a bike tour of the Murals of Modesto. There is so many located Downtown that it is the perfect start to enjoy the 100 public art pieces found around Modesto. You can start at any point but let’s begin on 7th Street, the Pursaution Brewing Parrot. Then a block over and up the bright Modesto, California mural on the back of Redeemers on 8th between G and H Streets. Swing by Urbano’s, located across from the back of the Gallo Center and check out a very cool Cat. Head over to 9th and I Street and Bauer’s for a pair of incredible murals on the front, a beautiful train and on the rear an excellent interpretation of the Valley with the Modesto Arch, a nod to American Graffiti and California poppies. At this point, I would recommend travelling up to J Street and checking out the mural across from 18Seventy Brewing and on the side of Ralston’s Goat, a piece entitled Pollination. Next head down 10th back towards I Street and check out about a dozen pieces in the alley that Ls back around to J Street. Several vibrant pieces cover three walls painted by world-renowned muralists, including a tribute to Modesto’s own George Lucas and Star Wars. Head up J St to 11th and take a left to check out the mural at

Commonwealth(looking like a pub crawl at this point and why not create one.) Head back to J Street and check out the 57 Chevy painted on the side of the Chamber of Commerce building, you can follow the alley over to I Street, and you will see the Harvest Moon mural. Travel up a block and turn left on 13th and J and see another tribute to American Graffiti and the 32 Duece Coupe. A half a block from there, you will view the newest murals downtown located behind the State Theatre. Continue up J Stree to 15th on the side of Dewz to find a beautiful mural depicting the Modesto Arch and the bounty of the San Joaquin Valley. On the other side of the building heading towards McHenry, you will see another tribute to cruising and the MPOA. On 16th Street, there is another locomotive mural. Several others are nearby, including an automotive mural at Neville Brothers and a little further down a tribute to Yosemite and Royal Robbins. Head the other way on Downey, and you will encounter the remarkable monkey and Forbidden Lands murals. Finally, head up McHenry, and you will see several more murals depicting Modesto’s cruising culture. Several of the murals have been sponsored by ModestoView along with other community-oriented businesses and organizations. Looking forward to more community art including the proposed Star Wars mural at Never Boring’s downtown office building. Make sure when posting photos to tag @ modestoview when you post on social media so we can check them out.

BARGAIN VIEW Start the New Year!

The start of the New Year brings new things to do. The season for trying new things never ends. Luckily, most things continue on, so that we can give them a go. Ms. M. is currently sipping on a cup of Earl Grey while browsing the class offerings for Modesto Junior College’s Community Education this spring at www.mjc4life.org. She knows it is never too late to learn a new skill or take up a new hobby and easy to sign up for. Nonetheless, the New Year is a great time for everyone to try something out. Here are some things to try out that will be a bargain. Yoga is a great way to get to know your body and practicing Kirtan is a tradition that can still the mind and open the heart. Elevate yoga is hosting an Evening with MahaShakti Music’s Tim “Tio” Lechuga for their first Friday Kirtan series on January 7th. This is the first event of the year for this monthly series at Elevate Community Yoga. While the event is donation based, members are encouraged to donate $15 and guests $20. Attendees are encouraged to bring anything they would like to sit upon such as blankets, pillows, bolsters or chairs. Happy New Year Modesto

ALL AGES VIEW

By Grace McNamara

I hope you all had a wonderful time with family and friends. Were you able to stay up to midnight? Over the holiday, I spent some quality time with loved ones! A new year means new beginnings. Many tend to have resolutions during this time for the new year. For one of my resolutions, I plan to help continue to support our local businesses. These include some of my all-time favorite places to eat, such as Deva Cafe, Churchkey, and Chefs of New York. Maybe, even grabbing a coffee every now and then at Queen Bean! The Chartreuse Muse has some art classes that I would be interested in taking as well. They have many different classes like, “take a spin pottery class.” You can check out their website for the classes by searching

www.thechartreusemuse.com. I’d love to seek out a new spot to shop here in Modesto as well! In 2021, Intrinsic Elements became one of my all-time favorite shops. They have hand made jewelry, crystals, candles, and so much more. The vibe is super cool there, and I am so happy I discovered this shop. I can’t wait to see what I will find this year for 2022. During my winter break, I have highly enjoyed going to the movie theaters as a fun activity. I love going to the State Theater located on J street. The theater has been around 88 years and is still inspiring and magical after all these years. It opened in 1934 on Christmas Day! It’s gorgeous on the inside, as well as outside. The state theater not only shows new films, they also show your favorite classic movies. I recently watched “The Outsiders” with my family, and it was nothing but a joy to see! The State Theater also hosts many events all the time. This includes comedy shows, dance performances, operas, and much more. If interested, I recommend looking up some of the fun upcoming events! I hope you all had a wonderful 2021. Let’s make the most of the new year!

Rockin’ Thanks

By Chris Murphy

GET BACK TO THE ROOF • 10th ST PLAZA Celebrating ’ legendary Apple rooftop concert in Modesto

FREE SHOW - Coming to a roof top soon! All rooftop songs performed in order! Special Beatle Hits to Follow. Featuring members of Third Party, the Vibes and Friends

Presented by Gianelli Law, ModestoView, MAMA Association, Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group

Yay, Rockin’ Holiday 2021was a big success! Thanks to all that made Rockin Holiday 2021 a Rockin’ success and make it better every year. Despite our challenges, we delivered a lot of magic to the Modesto holiday season and put a lot of smiles on kids’ faces with our Rockin’ North Pole, Rockin’ Santa and the Rockin’ Elves. Families enjoyed the Rockin’ Snow and Rockin’ Music in the Plaza with special amazing Rockin’ Tree light shows. We even had a Rockin’ Hanukah celebration! It takes an amazing team to bring Rockin’ Holiday to Modesto each season and we could not do this without the amazing teamwork of our supporters and sponsors. Working together, we are creating new spaces, events and activities that make Modesto vibrant and interesting. We delivered on our mission to create a classic Modesto winter wonderland FREE to all that visit and encouraging people to come to Downtown Modesto. Thank you Nick Crockett and the Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group, our ModestoView Crew, the City Of Modesto, and Collins Electrical Company for the amazing support and creativity over all these years. There is a big crew that makes each night come to life and huge thanks to our Rockin Sponsors: Visit Modesto, Ralston’s Goat,
