EDITOR’S Greetings Modesto Friends! Wishing you a wonderful 2013 from the Murphy Family Chris, Madison, Abbey and Becky

W

here did 2012 go? Everyone I talk to feels the same way. Whenever anything comes up, it is “Is it January already?” Yes it is. You can look at it two ways. First, that time is just going by too fast or secondly as I see it, there is so much to do that we are all so busy, our weeknights and weekends are full of amazing things we are doing. Yes my fellow Modestans, we have had an action packed 2012 with a list of events that much bigger cities would envy. And from the looks of things, 2013 appears to be on track to be even busier, or crazier if you prefer. At ModestoView we have a front row seat to this craziness as our writers are the people that are making many of these event happen and changing the Modesto Area for the better. The ModestoViewCrew have created Thursday Rambles, Millionaire breakfasts, developed the Historic Cruise Route, restored the Arch, and presented acoustic, jazz, blues, indie, metal and rockabilly shows, artwalks and art projects, Project Hope events, lead fitness races, Sloshball, Santa Con, peace rallies and so much more. ModestoView is for people that do. Pretty awesome huh? You, our faithful readers and friends are the ones in the know. I can always tell someone who reads ModestoView as they seem to be connected and know what is happening in our town and are there to lend a hand an play a part of making our city better. That is really what it is all about. 2013 has so much promise. The economy seems to be on the mend and we all may have made it through the toughest times, but how do we come out of it? How do we emerge stronger? We have to focus! We need to make sure downtown Modesto is alive and vibrant. Why? A healthy downtown makes a healthy community. Simply put, cites with dead downtowns are a mess. We have to make this happen. We need to encourage the arts city-wide. Modesto can be known for art, murals, creativity and economic energy. Supporting arts and music in our schools creates smart creative kids with high test scores. There are many creative people in town, but this only works if we all support them and their work. For example, we can be a city of music. The MAMAs showcase over 220 nominees just for the best in our local music scene, but we all need to go see live shows, buy local music, and reward the places that host live music, big or small with our business. If we don’t do our share, these creative things can disappear. ModestoView is here to help highlight the good and the creative. Your job is to dive in and experience all we have and tell your friends so that they can tell their friends and so on and so on. In 2013, “we” are the change we need. We can change how people in town see Modesto and more importantly how the rest of the world sees us. Like the Beatles said, “All together now”. Let’s do it, let’s make the 2013 the year of creativity. Because of you our readers and our advertisers that allow us to print and deliver this magazine, we can make it happen. I am counting on each and every one of you to become an evangelist for Modesto creativity in 2013! Happy New Year!

Publishers Note:

Dawn Quinn, Ruben and Chris

As I am typing these words into my magical Apple laptop machine I can’t stop thinking that I may be writing this only for myself. Were the Mayans right? Did the world end? I sure hope not! I was rather enjoying my time on Earth. Anyway, I’m going to finish this column no matter who reads it. I’m a rebel I suppose. Who knows - Maybe someone out there is reading this online from their secret bunker where they will spend an eternity eating canned green beans and drinking Tang. If so - Good luck with the zombies! Those things can get mean! If you read my column last month, you know all about the health fiasco that I am currently dealing with. I should address that because I get calls and emails all the time from concerned Modestans that say things like “Hey. Can I get a number for your apartment manager? That location of yours is pretty sweet!” In all seriousness, I’m doing well out here. My body is accepting the new meds like a champ and my blood tests are getting more and more stable. Unfortunately, the overall prognosis is still the same but that is ok by me. I’ll get through this. I have chosen to live by the gospel of Joe Cocker and get by with a little help from my friends. I can’t really go wrong with that plan. I hope that you are looking forward to 2013 in Modesto as much as I am. I am excited about getting involved in as many projects as I can and helping to make our community a better place that more people will want to visit. Think about all the cool things already announced for next year - George Lucas at

the American Graffiti Parade, Shrek and Dreamgirls at the Gallo Center for the Arts, amazing new murals all over town and a newly reinvigorated focus on local artists at the State Theatre. This is all going to be great! Stick with the ModestoView this year. Let us help guide you. In 2012 we published guides to help you find the city’s best taco trucks, hamburgers and coffee and we plan on doing more of that sort of thing this year. Be aware that we are always open to suggestions. Contact us anytime and tell us what you are interested in reading. ModestoView is a team effort backed by awesome sponsors and advertisers that are right here in our community. That’s a big deal folks. We couldn’t do what we do without you. Take care of yourself this month. Work on your resolutions but don’t let them make your life miserable. Sure, you may plan to live on salad but don’t feel bad if you find yourself at Camp 4 in front of a chocolate panini or at Phoenix

Noodle House getting lost in fried bananas and coconut ice cream. Life is meant to be enjoyed. Enjoy it. Embrace it. Infuse as much vigor and happiness into it as you can. Follow me at facebook.com/rporraswriter or laugh at my ridiculous sense of humor at twitter.com/modestofamous. If you need a friend or some local advice, email me directly at r.porras@me.com. This is way more than a job for me. This is my life. I love what I do and I really appreciate your support. Happy New Year!

We get letters! Here is a really nice one and a great suggestion. Anyone else interested? “Rec’d my Modesto View today and I love that Snow Globe. Is a poster of it or the real thing gonna be for sale any time? I was born here (77 years ago) and love Modesto memorabilia.” Janice Rhea

California Art Association’s 37th Annual Young Masters Show at the Mistlin Gallery. Open to young artists pre-school to High School, the show runs January 15th to February 9th . An awards reception for all entrants, friends and family members finishes the show on February 9. Award winners receive art ribbons and art supplies. Entry into the show is $2 per art piece submitted, with submissions via art instructors and classroom teachers Friday January 11, and other entries Saturday January 12. This is a fun show with a view of the future of local artists in our area. Children and Adult Class sessions also start up in January, at both the Chartreuse Muse and Mistlin Galleries. Check the schedules and rates. Clothed Model sessions, illustrative figure drawing, oil painting, watercolors, and other class sessions are available at varied proficiency levels, times and costs. Some of the Central California Art Association art classes at Mistlin Gallery are arranged through the City of Modesto Parks and Neighborhood Department. Check with the galleries for more information. Mid month, check out the Quilt and Textile Arts show at Centre Plaza. The show title is “Heart of the Valley” and put on by the Country Crossroads Quilters. Admission is $7, with kids under 12 free, and runs two days, Saturday and Sunday January 19 and 20. For more information, call 209 5216843. This month usually features the fine art show at Delicato Family Vineyards tasting room up in Manteca. Many of our local area artists enter this annual regional juried show that runs in a setting where it is easy to get a glass of Gnarly Head or other Delicato vintage wine to enjoy your visit. Around the downtown scene, Mark Holden is on the walls at Serrano Social Club, and even the upstairs area ceilings, and down in the basement in the Center Stage Conservatory Theater lower level studio at 11th and J Streets. Jen Coffey is up in the red room at Café Deva, with a very nice show. Take a look at the various venues downtown, and

you will find more than the art walk map venues have art, locally produced and otherwise. More events combining our music and theater scene, with the visual arts are in the works, and the December Art Walk featured a film project by the Runnels Brothers on Modesto as a Mecca for same. Walk past Concetta and peer into the windows of the lunch room to see art is up there. I’ve found Cortney Bubek paintings at Papachino’s on J Street, and different paintings at Tokyo Express. In case you’ve seen the start of a mural at 303 Downey Avenue, that’s no illusion as you drive by Savemart. Art Walk this month is January 17. The new year brings news for the 2013 Stanislaus Artists Open Studio tour. Map booklets should be available March 1 for the April 6 and 7 weekend. A free preview show at Gallo Center is on the schedule, with maps available for purchase April 4. The 2013 Purchase Prize Award winners are Barbara Gill Salerno, Don Hall, Linda Knoll, Morgan Andre and Thom Rudholm.

ew Years is my least favorite holiday for two reasons. The first is that New Years Day guarantees you your third worst hangover of the year. The second reason is because, without any real warning, all of your attractive and fun friends turn into the most boring, health-conscious people ever OVERNIGHT. To you people I say NO. Why do we insist on giving up our vices on January 1st? Our bad habits give us individuality and keep us young and interesting! Well, that is unless your vice is particularly bad (you know, like stealing martini olives from the bar caddy), then maybe you should rethink some of your life decisions. Phil and I had a rough time finding a bar for January; I think we’ve finally succeeded in scaring everyone away (which was secretly our intention all along). Driving around downtown Modesto, mere hours before deadline, Phil was struck with a genius idea: “Bacchus!” One legal, and exceptionally executed by yours truly, U-turn later we ventured into the newly reopened and always beautiful Bacchus on very, very last minute notice. I was unsure how an impromptu bar

8

interview would be received, Chad Jackson, general manager of Bacchus, however, could not have been more excellent and accommodating. I am still of the opinion that Bacchus has the prettiest bar in Modesto. I love the ladder-and-shelving set up, and if I was always the terrible person I sometimes am, I would only order top shelf. So what spurred the closing and revamping? Jackson states: “We wanted to upgrade Bacchus and reorganize ourselves from top to bottom. We wanted to create a new energy. We still have our bar, but we really wanted to enhance the dining ex-

d d d d d d d d d d d d d d

perience.” Lucky for me, I usually enjoy a mostly liquid dinner, and with 100+ bottles of spirits, over 70 bottles of vino, and the Bacchus winter cocktail list as my guide, my dining experience will most certainly be enhanced. With live weekend music, an excellent selection of whatever your alcoholic tastes may be, a lovely bar and restaurant as your backdrop, and Mr. Chad Jackson (who has a totally kick-ass Buzz Lightyear outfit) as

your host, I think Bacchus is a perfect location to ring in 2013 properly. My resolutions you ask? To starve my body and mind from the rarified thrill of petty shoplifting… wait, I mean world peace? Yes, to promote world peace. And to drink more…. water. Right. Happy New Years Modesto! Stay out of trouble! 1200 I Street, Modesto 209.576.8994 www.bacchusfoodandspirits.com

Bar Bites The ViewCrew enjoys their cocktails and here is one little treat you need to know about so you can enjoy and drink wisely. Bread. Oh yes ModestoView friends, you can order the tasty Manhattan or one of your favorites and order up a small loaf of home made bread at the Boardroom or a Crab fondue at Bacchus to lay down a base. Perfect way to enjoy a cocktail in Modesto. If you don’t order enough bread, call a cab. See page 30 for Taxi list

A Time to Perform in January By Kaye Osborn Hope your holidays were bright and magical. Can’t believe how quickly 2012 zoomed by! Hello 2013! May it be prosperous and filled with Drama! My friend, Mark Medina and I, enjoyed interpreting The Giving Tree at Center Stage Conservatory Theater. The all ages show was interactive and memorable. The Conservatory Theater will be doing an all ages show every other month. The show’s length is perfect for children because it involves audience participation, the price is right and is about 40 minutes. After the show, get your picture taken with the actors! Tracie Sprague and Megan Lynch were so happy to have the show interpreted for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing. It is my wish that more productions would include one interpreted performance for our Deaf community. Guess it is time to do another show with Central Valley Theater for Deaf. I will keep you informed, I promise!

Bikini Bare Burrito!!!

By Dana Johnson FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: see Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month

Happy New Year Modesto or as my daugh-

ter Amanda says “Happy New YOU!” I’ve resigned myself to the fact that my bikini days are long gone, but I am always interested in feeding my bod healthier choices that I actually crave before eating. Ola’s Mexicali Grill (OMG!) is just the place to delight my palate and trim my caloric intake. Especially after a holiday season that for me was well sugar-coated! I knew I needed to truly impress my friend and colleague, Efren Martinez, Modesto View’s own Fit View with a dining establishment that he’d completely approve of! OMG doesn’t have a microwave oven, no deep fryer, and they do not cook with lard. They only use high quality ingredients, no cheap cuts of meat (like chicken thighs) and no iceberg lettuce in the fridge. I like their commitment to the freshest of foods right down to their spices and herbs that are dried by hand. Katina and Ismael Perez have been proudly living their Modesto dream of owning a fun, unique and successful restaurant in McHenry Village for almost 10 years now! Way to go! The couple also has a young son who is eager to help out with the family business. They have strong ties to the Modesto community as they’ve lived here all their lives. They love it here! The Perez Family is most generous when it comes to donations for numerous local charities like: Kendall School for Autism foundation (that hits close to home as they have a niece with autism). Fun Sports “Ride for A Cure for Cancer”,MYSA, Bel Pasi Baseball, Modesto Sunrise Rotary, Kids First, Downey High Booster, Enochs High, Beyer High, and St, Joseph’s Catholic Church. Katina and Ismael hope their loyal and new patrons will continue to enjoy their cuisine as much as they enjoy creating it! Mexicali Grill recently added “Olas” to the name because there’s already a Mexicali

10

Watermelon Cilantro Salsa Tropical Grill in San Jose. They needed to be able to service mark the name for upcoming sauces and dressings. They always answer the phone “Ola” and think of their restaurant as a little piece of the foods they like along the beaches of Mexico. Olas means “wave” in Spanish. Now that’s just cool! The taco salad is the most popular on the menu and it sounded like an excellent choice. I was not disappointed! So very Dana~licious and yes I’m craving another just thinking about it!!! I was pleasantly surprised that night to chat with some regular elementary school age diners who were excited to shout out the healthy favorites on the menu! “You gotta try the quesadilla!” “No she has to try the chili verde, it’s the best!” “You know she’ll go for the taco salad, all the grown-ups do!” Loved their suggestions and enthusiasm especially when there was no trans-fat or toy prize included to sway there food choices Bikini Bare Burrito (BBB): Spinach, red & green bell peppers, onion. Zucchini, jalapeno, barley sautéed in their Dana~licous garlic lime sauce, with black beans, served over romaine lettuce, & topped with sliced avocado. Studio V (Pilates & Fitness) Wellness of Modesto inspired the BBB via Studio V’s Bikini Boot Camp. Participants must adhere to a “clean” diet of vegetables

d d d d d d d d d d d d d d

and proteins to meet the program requirements so OMG enhanced the challenge in a delectable way! Modesto View signature question asked to Katina and Ismael, Beatles or Stones? Simultaneously Katina said Beatles and Ismael had the superior taste to answer Stones! Another prime example of how opposites attract! Whether you are thinking bikini, speedo, or just how to incorporate another Modesto great dining choice in the New Year, Olas Mexicali Grill is a great place to get start! Dine well Modesto! By Dana Johnson FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen Studio V Bikini Bare Burrito Info The Studio V Bikini Bare Burrito at Mexicali Grill was created especially for Studio V Bikini Boot Camp participants. Participants must adhere to a “clean” diet of vegetables and protein. Mexicali Grill’s BBB is a delectable menu creation that meets the requirements perfectly! Fresh and Light Ingredients: 2 cups chopped seedless watermelon 1 cup chopped fresh pineapple 1 cup chopped fresh mango Juice from 4 fresh limes 1 cup trimmed and chopped scallions 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro Salt and pepper to taste Instructions: Toss all ingredients together in a mixing bowl and season with salt and pepper just before serving. Brand New Year... by Monica Barber Brand New Year… Brand New You Happy New Year! Last night as I rang in the New Year in my own fabulous way I realized that seldom do people really ever change when the year changes over. They make their resolutions which last a week or two only to realize they had to give up a part of themselves. Why give up anything when you can reinvent what you have already? Honestly, there’s no better way to kick off a new year with a new version of you by transforming what you have already. And I can think of no better way to change up your style than with a few stops around town that will definitely be a deal that both the old and new you will appreciate. Change your style again? Haircuts and Manicures come a dime a dozen but why should they? Step into something different by visiting the Paul Mitchell Academy for your next head-turning look. The Premier Salon boasts some of the best up-and-com-

ers to the hair profession classically trained to make you look like a classic. Get styled professionally for a reasonable price. 3100 McHenry Ave - 577-0644 Add a splash of excitement to the new year with a bit of culture form the Gallo Center for the Arts. In addition to theatre presentations there are plenty of musical acts to take in this January and tickets range in price to fit any budget Dance lovers can check out the Rasta Thomas’ Bad Boys of Dance on Jan 22nd. You might just find yourself revitalized

with movement and form. For those wanting to really enjoy their love for good oldfashioned guitar sounds in a delightful way, look no further. Clint Black stops into MoTown on January 23rd and will deliver a one of kind show you won’t want to miss. galloarts.org Craving finesse ala The Rat Pack? Then head down to The Boardroom. It’s a great place for the modern day swinger looking to escape in a classy way with a gal on his arm or a sweet dame to enjoy the company of fine gentleman without the racket. Big

modern sounds are swinging most evenings from an in-house band and there is never a cover charge unless a special planned event is taking place. Drinks are especially guaranteed to give you bang for your buck. facebook.com/theboardroombarandlounge If you’re looking to get pumped and spare yourself the expense on the way to a new you, stop in and take a look at Planet Fitness. Alan Sanchez – Good Day Sacramento by Chris Murphy ing to Miami this past April. I kept telling myself I had to get fit, then it was only 2 months to Miami and I had done nothing about getting fit. I got into the gym lost a few pounds, started to feel great. And I was off and now I’ve lost over 50 lbs. With a nutritional plan from locally owned Max Muscle and Fitness at Cross Fit Modesto. I’m stronger and more fit than ever. MV: Tell us about one of your interviews that went surprisingly different than you expected. AS: About 4 years ago, I did an interview with a Blue Angels Jet Pilot, while flying just under 800 mph. Doing turns, flying upside down, and rolls was fun and a bit scary. It was a wonderful experience but doing an interview was a bit hard because I was in amazement.

ModestoView goes way back with Alan Sanchez. We always knew Alan was going to go big. From his early days at Hilmar High and MJC and Central Valley Report, his way with people and his energy in front of the camera was engaging and everyone he talked to related to him. Alan soon became “The Intern”. Alan sensed an opportunity to break into the TV world. Since Modesto is not it’s own demographic market (a position we strongly disagree with) Alan decided to take his “fun man on the Modesto street message” to Sacramento in 2006. Fast forward to today, Alan is no longer an intern, but one of central California’s favorite TV personalities. Alan is still Modesto based and the good things in Modesto have been front and center daily on the popular Good Day Sacramento thanks to the efforts of Alan Sanchez. Alan has the honor of hosting the Modesto Area Music Awards (the MAMAs) more than anyone else and has showcased Modesto

12

musicians on his show. We all want to change the way people perceive Modesto, and what Alan is doing is one of the most high profile ways to do it. Let’s get to know our highly televised, energetic and caffeinated Modesto Ambassador, Alan Sanchez. ModestoView: Tell us about your Modesto roots. Alan Sanchez: I was born and raised in Turlock. I went to a Turlock School until I was in 6th grade. Then moved schools and went to Hilmar until graduation. Before Freshman year, my family and I moved to Keyes and that’s where my parents still live. As for Modesto, my family and I were poor, and couldn’t afford many things, even the 15-20 minute trip to Modesto. We would shop at the mall when we had a chance and check out the American Graffiti celebrations downtown. Which are always great memories. I finally got a job in Modesto at the Longs Drugs (now CVS) off of Scenic and Oakdale and haven’t left Modesto since. Only

a few moths before my 21st birthday, I decided to try school out, and signed up for classes at Modesto JC. My initial plan was to go for pharmacy tech. Yet I took 1 Beginning TV class and it happened to be my 1st class. I was in that class for 5 minutes and that was it. I knew that I wanted to be a reporter, and NOTHING was going to stop me. I made sure to involve myself into school. Thus allowing me to discover Modesto. And I love it. MV: You have traveled throughout the valley covering a variety of events, what is it that makes Modesto special? AS: Modesto truly has people who love the town. Who have passion for the city, to keep it thriving more everyday. They get excited about event and charities. That makes it easy to cover event and positive stories about Modesto. MV: You recently have gotten super fit. This is a great healthy message how did you do it? AS: I knew for over a year that I was go-

MV: Modesto is a giving community, what is your perspective about how the people of Modesto support each other? AS: The Love Modesto event is a wonderful example. Getting thousands of people to take over all parts of Modesto to help in anyway possible. Modesto does a great job in making sure they’re opportunities for anyone with any skill to help. MV: What is something you have learned about Modesto that most people don’t know? AS: There is so much to do, see, and shop. From great events like X-fest, MAMAs, and fun charity events. Cool movies at the State Theater, plus so many shops that you can only find in Modesto that get people from outside of town coming in. MV: How did you get the Good Day Sacramento gig? AS: When I was an intern a reporter called in sick, they needed a someone to help out. They took a big chance with me, and I did the segment. I did ok, but they saw the passion in my eyes. they kept me on every weekend for the next 6 months. After that, they offered me part time reporter job. I did that for a year and then they offered me a contract. beoming the youngest reporter in Sacrameto market history.

Ever-Present Past By Ken White "There are places I'll remember All my life, though some have changed Some forever, not for better Some have gone and some remain All these places have their moments With lovers and friends I still can recall Some are dead and some are living In my life, I've loved them all." – Lennon and McCartney, "In My Life." anuary is the coldest month of the year. Named after Janus, the Roman god of doorways, it is the month of new beginnings, comebacks, and second chances. Janus is the god of doors, transitions, gates, and change. A two-faced god, he looks at what was and will be. Janus is the master of time because he can see into the past with one face and into the future with the other. As the god of beginnings, he represents the harvest, marriages, and deaths, as well as the limbo between barbarism and civilization, rural and urban, youth and adulthood. Like Janus, I am forever suspended between two worlds, two realities; standing here in the now contemplating the road behind and the road ahead. One face looking backward, one face looking forward. I am reminded of Neil Young caught in the act on the cover of "Buffalo Springfield Again," staring at what's gone before while the rest of the band gaze at what could be Every day, I encounter people and places, sights and sounds, memories and mementos that are or symbolize the then, now, and yet to be of my life. It is a chronicle of the immediate past, present, and future. At each stage of life, we journey down roads that are familiar and well-traveled, having driven them our entire life. They are the roads taken and the landmarks we pass are beloved and well-known. Although

14

many are the same ones we've travelled before, we are different. We may pass someone along the way who looks familiar, only to realize that it was, is, or will be us in an earlier, current, or imagined incarnation. Like Albert Finney and Audrey Hepburn in Two for the Road. Joan Didion, a Central Valley refugee, once wrote that "a place belongs forever to whoever claims it hardest, remembers it most obsessively, wrenches it from itself, shapes it, renders it, loves it so radically that he remakes it in his own image." I believe that. Modesto belongs to me and the Central Valley is mine. I am a Flatlander. I tell stories that take place here and involve those who live here. Tales inspired by an actual locale, genuine people, and true events – real, imagined, and/or recollected. They have all shaped who I am and how I see the world. They are my personal remembrance of things past. The five senses conjuring déjà vu and the familiar as surely as Proust's tea-dipped madeleines. Collectively, I call them "The Flatland Chronicles." In the coming months, I will share short, short stories about this place we call home. Each New Year's Eve, as I stand in the doorway listening to Auld Lang Syne, I am reminded of the ever-present past. "And the seasons they go 'round and 'round And the painted ponies go up and down We're captive on the carousel of time We can't return, we can only look behind From where we came And go round and 'round and 'round In the circle game And go 'round and 'round and 'round in the circle game." – Joni Mitchell, "The Circle Game"

Put the year together with the good, the bad, the highs and lows and wrap it up and tie it with a bow. On the A-side, the bigger venues brought in some great shows: Straight No Chaser, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy at the Gallo, Hugh Laurie at Turlock Community Theatre, Ronnie Montrose and Tommy Castro, Lisa Lisa at the State and Fat Cat, and yes, Reba at Ironstone. But for me the real invigorating story is how the grassroots blood, sweat and tears of our local artists, musicians and businesses support the arts. No matter what your thing is you’ve got to love Mike Vanek promoting the heaviest of Metal; Big Earl Mathews pushing his Thursday Night Ramble and his Cryin’ Shame’; Ron & Doug’s Productions with their tribute shows & a high light for December their stocking stuffer Beatles Tribute; Jennifer Allsup with the rockabilly scene; Reg Evans for the regional Latin night shows and small club shows with the best in local talent; and Greg Edwards with the Off the Air thing, and many others. And there are so many bright moments gracing us on the scene: Francesca Bavaro, Patty Magdaleno, Josh Rosenblum, Joe Barretta, Tim Allen, Ross McGinnis, Marirose & the Gypsies, Johnny Valdes & cohort Kelly Ramirez, Stop Motion Poetry, & the High Voltage gang. So go see the regional and national acts and think globally but nurture our scene and groove locally! More bright moments in store for the month. New Years Wishes and Resolutions

By Chris Murphy, Ruben Porras our writers and ModestoView friends

Happy New Year Modesto!

The new year has so many opportunities! So many fun possibilities! But why should we only have great ideas and wonderful resolutions on January 1st? How many resolutions have you made and then promptly blown off?

Get Fit! Run 10 miles a day! Keep your room clean! Pick up litter! Wear skinny jeans! Never wear jeans? Only eat organic nuts and seeds! Eat French fries for breakfast lunch and dinner! Learn to slam dunk! We have been asking our Facebook friends, our friends about town and our editors to offer insight- These are their New Year’s Resolutions and/or Wishes for Modesto in 2013. We wish them the best and we wish you the best. The top answer from across our city is “Get out and explore Modesto more.” That was really cool because we hope you learn something new about Modesto every day you visit with us. We live in a very special place. Get the most out of it!

Chris Murphy – Publisher My New Year’s resolution is to enjoy my wife Becky and my girls as much as possible and not waste a second. There is so much change in our lives as our daughters get older and time together means so much more. My Modesto Wish is that we really become a city known for creativity and vibrance. We need to be an incubation zone for live music and we need to share our talent with the world. The City of Modesto needs to make it easy to present and host live music. I wish for Modesto to continue to build on our American Graffiti heritage and authenticity and attract people from around the world to share our unique history.

16

Ruben Porras - Editor I resolve to be as happy and healthy as possible in 2013. Can you keep a secret? I’d like to make my beautiful girlfriend Dawn my beautiful wife this year. We don’t have a fortune. We don’t have a fancy home. We have love and hope. Foster love and hope in your life and you will be happier.

d d d d d d d d d d d d d d

Jim Christiansen - ArtView I hope to be out walking the streets of Modesto more in 2013 and I wish that Modesto’s visual arts scene gets even more noticed in 2013.

Kate Serpa - BarView My resolution can be either the “To drink more... water” and/or “To give more love to the McHenry Museum, and to encourage others to do the same!”.

Philip K Johnson – Contributing photographer My New Year’s resolution is to start my book of photographs of the people that are Modesto. And maybe quit smoking.

Jennifer Allsup - RockabillyView I am wishing for Modesto to become a closer community in whatever positive path we all choose.

The date can be with a spouse, friend, child, co-worker -- it doesn’t matter who just as long as it’s in Modesto. I would love to see a “Win a Date” contest (perhaps in collaboration with Kate of BarView) for a night to remember for being a loyal ModestoView reader!

ModestoView friend Felicia Aleman I had a pretty great 2012, so I resolve to keep up what I’ve been doing -- Spending time with people I love and keeping lots of music in my life.

ModestoView friend Deidre Silva My New Year’s Resolution is to live life to the fullest -- Enjoy things I have never tried, visit places I have never been and experience moments that take my breath away. Take comfort in knowing that I have people here that love me and will do anything for me and vice-versa. Only allow those in my life who truly bring me happiness and joy and inspire me to be a better person. To branch out into the unknown to not only chase after my dreams but to make them a reality. Reach out to those that I would usually just walk passed as you never know who someone truly is and what type of battle they are fighting. In short, my New Year’s Resolution is to live life to the fullest and as if every day is my last day on Earth.

ModestoView Friend Lloyd Gomez Founder/Creative Director of Bass Brigade My New Years resolution is to travel more. Blaze new trails, find fresh perspectives, inspire creative thinking. As the saying goes, the world is a book, and those who don’t travel only read one page. ModestoView friend Leah Tamez My New Year’s Resolution is different this year. My goal is to slow down and spend as much time with my family and loved ones as possible. To make magic moments, listen intently to heartfelt words, and enjoy special smiles. I’ll make every second count and be sure that every moment matters. Oh and the usual -- lose weight. Hehe.

ModestoView friend Nicole Van Dyke 2012 will always be a year for great loss to me. So 2013 will be the opposite. My New Year’s resolution will be to enjoy life. I will do more things I want, such as sit outside, discover new music, and read a lot. I’ll take a class and learn new things and meet new people. I’ll keep things I don’t want to do to a minimum, and learn to say no. I’ll be true to myself and have lots of conversations and laugh more with friends. I’ll memorize as much as I can and worry about things less. I’ll play with my pets, and niece, spend time with my family -- because I am so lucky to have family I enjoy. I’ll hug my parents more, they are awesome and I’ll make myself remember to tell my husband every day that I love him, even on the rough days. I’ll basically just live a good year the best way I can. That’s my plan for 2013.

Send us your resolutions and wishes and we will add them to our Facebook and ModestoView.com. This is our city and our lives so let’s make them better. d d d d d d d d d d d d d d

Eric Benson - JazzView I resolve to make more time to play music and promote live music in my life. I wish for Modesto is to see more networking between artists for the arts and the community at large to create an all-ages community arts space that the Modesto View can promote the heck out of to make it successful. Build it and they will come!

By Jennifer Allsup Holy Jumpin and Jivin’!

Now that we have another year of Rockabilly , Psychobilly, classic cars, pin-ups and burlesque behind us, I am looking forward to what’s in store in 2013. Let’s start with a young man making his way out to the Modesto music scene. Born in Modesto, Ca. in June of 1997. With music in his blood, now this 15 year old young man that has a passion for the oldies such as Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, Son House, Etta James, Ray Charles & Nina Simone just to name a few of his favorites (you may recognize). He first recorded his first CD at the age of five, strummin’ his guitar with his mo-hawk flying and mean grins of expression on his face. Standing out on the ranch on a sunset evening. Singing about Wasp & Sprinklers and how everyone likes to BBQ. With all the musical influences in his life, no wonder he has such a passion for music. At, the age of six he started piano lessons in Riverbank, Ca. As, a seventh grader at Teel Jr. High in Empire, Ca. he began playing with the Johansen Marching Band. Mr. Tyler Buer was his teacher at the time along with Mr. Alan Davis. They gave him the encouragement to make him want to make more music, outside of his musical family. His freshman year he was drumming for the band “Vomit Party”, pounding out those punk & metal beats . Along with “Vomit Party” he was the drummer for “ICK” which opened up for “Joe Buck” the bass player for “Hank III”, “The Pendeltons” with the fabulous Tony Trevino, and “The Hooten Hallers” out of Columbia Missouri. He has joined his dad on many acoustic shows in the Central Valley as a duo singing originals and covers of “Johnny Cash”. Last year he performed at the “Prospect Theater” on Scenic Ave in Modesto for a birthday celebration to Johnny Cash along with an all-star line-

18

up.....The Wrong Doers, Poor House Millionaires, Nick Shattell and many more. This past year he won his first MAMA in 2012 along with his dad as “Best Acoustic “ Mike Allsup & Eli Allsup as a duo. Eli is following in his dads’ footsteps and his other musically talented family. Dad Mike Allsup started an acoustic scene in Modesto called Mike Allsup and Friends Acoustic Shows and is also singer of DAM. Big Mike Allsup ( Three Dog Night ) guitarist is also from Modesto, Ca. Jesse Allsup an amazing drummer which use to play with Christy Hollywood and The Walk of Fame with

Skeez and Christy Neva and Russ Allsup is the bass player for DAM. Now, Eli Allsup has returned the roots of music with his full band Eli Goodtimes & the Oldtimers with Jacob Canada (on bass) and Nathan Ignacio ( on drums). Playing music influenced by Rockabilly and Country, Eli Goodtimes & the Oldtimers have played a few shows to end the year, one in particular opening for Lucky Tubb and the Modern Day Troubadours. Ladies and Gentlemen keep your eyes and ears always open for the future of young talent in the valley in whatever genre of music they decide to embark upon. Eli Goodtimes & the Oldtimers will be performing at the Barking Dog on Jan. 29th with The Deltaz. This is an all ages show. Wishing you the best in 2013. Jennifer Allsup 209-214-0137

Happy New Year everyone, I hope you all had a great time. I am really excited about all the new things going on in local music this year and one of the things that has me the most fired up is, drum roll please... The State Theatre is going to be embracing local music like never before. It all starts on Feb 9th with a Local Artist Night featuring House Of Orange, The Pine Box Boys and the Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit. This is just the tip of the iceberg folks, expect to see many more of your favorite local acts playing the State over the next year. In the Blues world this month I have a couple of bands coming through Modesto from Southern California. On the 9th of Jan at the Barkin Dog, The Deltaz from L.A. will be playing with Eli Goodtimes and the Oldtimers, as well as Nathan Ignacio and the Ramblers. A little later in the month on the 19th at T’s, I have Black Market III from San Diego. Black Market III is an international touring band that is not to be missed. There is no cover charge for this show and I can say with confidence that this will be the last time you will get a chance to see these guys for free. As for my bands, BEatCS will be playing the Cow Track Lounge on the 26th, Poorhouse Millionaires will be playing at the Grizzly Rock Cafe on the 18th and you can always come see us at Deva Cafe on Sunday Mornings for Breakfast with the Millionaires from 10am to noon. In Ramble news, we are coming back from winter break on Jan 17th. January bands

include Boscoe’s Brood, Whitey Slim, Juno’s Circus, Broken Injun, Jeff Moore Band, CISUM, Boy Girl Boy, James Lawry and Rob Hill. If you are a musician looking for a place to try out new songs, check out the Cow Track Lounge open mic. It’s an acoustic jam, sorry no drums, that happens every Wednesday night, starting at 9:30pm. It’s always fun to see the great local players who stop through. As always, I look forward to seeing you out and about at one of the many local music events happening every week in the Modesto area.

As I look at a calendar for this upcoming year, my thoughts start to race as sounds flood my mind. We, as The Acoustic Rock Society, have had a distinct opportunity to witness and be a part of some amazing opportunities within our own community of downtown Modesto. I will never forget the crowds that came out for Marirose in the plaza last August or being able to watch a dear friend, Doug Robinett and his daughter, share the stage for the first time and absolutely shine in

the process! Local music is alive and we are so proud to be a small part of the vast Modesto music scene. So, knowing that we need a winter venue, the last few months we have been searching for something that could accommodate what we do. The Acoustic Rock Society has

signed on for a series of shows at The Lower Level Studio located in the basement on the corner of 11th and J Street. We will be working hand and hand with Traci Sprague and Megan Lynch who are the amazing ladies who run the black box theatre at the venue. We had our first show on December 9th and in our opinion, it was a huge success. We are extremely happy to have a stage for our local musicians to stand and grow upon in front of their own families and friends.

Best time to release new music By Tru Luv Lopez “Best time to release new music” is the first quarter of the year We survived the “Mayan prophecy” and now it’s back to music business. record labels have been preparing for the first quarter of the year to release their artist’s latest work. January trough March are one of the most important times to release new music. Albums by Backstreet Boys, Alice In Chains, Cher, Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine, The Black Keys, Eminem, AC/ DC, Beyonce, Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osbourne, Katy Perry and Mariah Carey are set to be released during the first quarter. In addition to LL Cool J -- Authentic HipHop on Feb 2nd, 50 Cent -- Street King Immortal on February 26, Akon -- Stadium, March 2013, and Ashanti -- BraveHeart, 1/29. There is still money to be made in a tough market where album sales have dropped since the early 2000. Consumer’s tastes are unpredictable and the trends change rather quickly. To compete with the market, producing good music is what’s most important. Assuming that your marketing budget (if you do have one), is solid enough to compete with the big releases, releasing your music during this time frame is no guarantee if you can’t produce good music. My best advice is to change your strategy beyond your demographic. has been the busiest time of my life as I, as well as all of the other high school seniors, have been working on college applications. So many essays, so many applications, so many letters and due dates and of course, our last semester grades. I couldn’t wait for winter break. Instead of doing homework, it was so nice to go to breakfast at Deva or grab a late lunch at Harvest Moon or a tea at the Queen Bean. There are so many fun places to enjoy right here in Modesto! A new year has arrived and I am looking forward to seeing new faces and hearing new sounds at local venues. My goal is to get out even more than I already do and meet up with artists that I have met before so that I can better learn about them and experience their work. I’ll start here by introducing singer-songwriter, Madie Boyd whom I recently met but have yet to see perform live. Boyd is a baby-faced lanky young man that you might not expect to be as powerful an artist as he is by the way that he looks or speaks. He is soft-spoken and quiet when you talk to him and those attributes carry over into his deep thoughtful lyrics and tender vibrant singing voice. Boyd becomes a dynamic force by bringing his songs to life with solid careful guitar playing and a forceful effort on the harmonica. Boyd has played at Queen Bean, The Thursday Night Ramble at Deva Cafe and at other and venues and events that tend to host local artists similar in style to Boyd such as Nathan Ignacio, Ryan Russell, Daniel Edwards and not an Airplane. At an international level I would compare Boyd’s sound and style to that of Bob Dylan, Wilco, Ray Lamontagne or Ryan Adams. Boyd recently released an EP with Turlockbased Quote Your Pulse Records that can be downloaded or streamed for free at quoteyourpulserecords.bandcamp.com. The following is my take on the EP, Reno-

vations by Madie Boyd. -Linen Reverie - An introspective confession of love infused with a painful sense of desperation. Boyd’s harmonies carry the track as it rolls along at a playful pace on well-played acoustic notes. -False Teeth - A soft sad tale of a man trying to figure out who he is while looking within himself for answers and reassurances. The track is shaped by a certain sad crying sound that only a harmonica can produce. Boyd conveys sadness in a very intense way. -Overlooked - More desperation and sadness here and served up this time with a dose of loneliness. Set to upbeat acoustic strumming and powerful harmonica playing. -Renovations - The guitar work on this moody track is changed up to produce several different sounds and that makes for quirky switch-ups that end up working well as the song flows along. More sad desperate lyrics focused on self-exploration and selfquestioning. Overall, Renovations is a very solid and well-written effort. The album is very pleasant to listen to. This is not a pop album with bouncy beats and computer-enhanced voices. Look to play this album in a dim room when you need to just relax or when you are looking for something to inspire you to take a look within yourself. FIT M

By Efren Martinez I have always made it a point in life to look

Racing Fitness Tips from Jesse Santana

Fitness Event of The Month Andrew’s Run For The Children January 5th 2013 9:30AM, a 5K run/ walk that benefits the George Mark Children’s House. There is also a free kids 1Ž2 mile fun run at 9:00AM Jesse started this charity run in 2011 in appreciation to The George Marks Children’s House. More info log onto shadowchase.org

For a 5k it’s best to start hydrating the day before as opposed to a half or full marathon which I’ll start the week of the event. Just before a race, try to get in 8 to 10 ounces of water in. Pre-race nutrition. The morning of, keep it simple with some toast or a bagel and more H20 and some type of sports drink. 15 minutes prior to a race, Jesse warms up, stretches out and does strides prior to. He also includes a Gu energy supplement 15 minutes before the start.

Modesto View Friends, Team Challenge helped Jesse through a most difficult time and even though nothing will ever take away the pain of loosing a loved one from cancer, Memorial Medical Center’s Team Challenge just might be a team that could comfort you if you’ve experienced such a tragic loss or are even in the fight of your life against cancer. As for Jesse’s exceptional running skills, you might say they where rekindled through Team Challenge because at age of 12 he broke the national age record for a 10K with a time of 36:01. Jesse shared with me that he’s only been running off and on since he was 11 years old but never had the motivation to stick with it for more than 6 months until he started training for his first marathon in 2009. He hasn’t taken off more than 2 weeks from running and that’s usually only after a marathon. Some of Jesse Santana’s fastest races were recently at the Wine and Cheese race last October. He ran a 5K in 16:49. Jesse is not just amazingly fast in short races such as a 5K; he recently weathered the awful storm that hit at The California International Marathon last December. With winds gusting as hard as 40MPH during the race and the sheets of rain that where coming down sideways, Jesse still managed to pull a finish time of 2:52.51. I asked Jesse to share a final thought with all our Modesto View Readers. “Running for me is a way of life and I know it’s that way for most. All I can say is the sooner you start the sooner you’ll be hooked. But I have to warn you nothing rewarding is ever easy. So join a team and if you’re lucky enough you’ll find great training partners that will push you to do things you thought were once impossible. Runners make the impossible possible” If you would like more information or would like to register for Team Challenge, call 209-569-7789 For more Modesto info: www.modestoview.com

to those ahead of me and follow their lead. It’s no different when it comes to racing; in fact some of the best racing tips I have ever gotten were from my competitors who beat me to the finish line. That would include my friend who is an amazing runner, Jesse Santana. Jesse recently entered into my age group, so when I see him at the start line I know it’s going to be a hard race for me. A few months ago I got with my friend Jesse after a race and asked him how he got so fast and what ignites the fire within him when he races. His reply, well it came with a loving answer and in the name of his son Andrew. Back in 2007 Jesse’s son Andrew was diagnosed with cancer and lost his battle to it when he was only 15 years young. No doubt, this has to be the hardest thing any parent could ever have to go through. Shortly after his sons passing, he met a lady named Cheryl Casey from Memorial Medical Center’s Team Challenge. Cheryl recruited him and explained what Team Challenge was about and how most shared a common experience. Surly, the timing on their meeting had to have been written in the stars because Team Challenge was in the processes of training first timers like Jesse to run their first marathon. He decided to join Team Challenge and dedicated his first race to his son Andrew. The day prior to the race, Jesse shaved his head in remembrance to his son. It’s a day he and his family will never forget and what that race meant to them. For Jesse the pain is still there and it will always be there, but Jesse shared with me that there’s something therapeutic about putting one step in front of the other. He says it has really helped him cope with some of the pain of losing his son. So when it comes to what ignites the fire within him, it’s the memory of his son. Make no mistake Modesto View Readers; Jesses fire is bright with the love of Andrew and his racing times show it. In fact, as Jesse told me, “Efren, I run to honor my son, his strength, his courage and his life.”

2012 The year in Modesto Metal By Mike Vanek

012 The year in Modesto Metal 2012 was an up and down year for local metal. With an all-out abandonment of the all ages venue it has been rough for local metal bands. Our scene has been stricken with the need for all ages heavy metal venues in Modesto. We salute The Workshop in Ceres for continuing to keep the all ages flag flying for over 10 years strong and it continues to be the last remaining strictly all ages venues in our area. 2012 was a year of awakening for some bands. Hang The Kode had a banner year as did California Medication who played a masterful set opening for nationals TRAPT at The Fat Cat, Nothing But Losers continued their dominance of the scene and local favorites Warpath Assassins embarked on their 1st US tour with

fellow local touring heavyweights Better Left Unsaid! Now, I’d like to shine some light on an out of town promotion company doing great things for our scene. J-Max productions out of Chico CA has been bringing some of the biggest bands in the world to Modesto like Trapt, Seether, POD, Soulfly, 5 Finger Death Punch just to name a few!! We salute Ben & Justin for supporting and strengthening our music scene and this February their bringing the legendary Marilyn Manson to Modesto Center Plaza!! 2012 was a tough year for metal but we hope that 2013 is a new era for Modesto Metal!! As always Keep one foot in the gutter and one fist in the gold.

There are many exercises that are centered on the body and mind connection. One, from India is Yoga, based on Buddhist philosophy, another is T’ai Chi Ch’uan from China based on Taoism. T’ai Chi Ch’uanwhich means ‘Grand Ultimate Fist’ was founded during the Song Dynasty (960-1127) by Chang San Feng,a Taoist philosopher. One day he observed the fight between a bird and a snake outside his window. Every time the bird tried to swoop down to the snake and make it’s strikes, the snake would turn its head right away and dodge the attack easily. As Chang San Feng kept observing this fight he noticed that the snake’s feigning weakness was what incited the bird to be even more daring with its

strikes. Yet each time the bird tried to strike at the snake with its beak, the snake would respond with its ready and waiting defense. Finally frustrated, the bird flew away and the snake was left in peace. Chang San Feng was very inspired. He applied the T’ai Chi principles of the firm and the yielding – the Yin and Yang forces of nature - and created a unique martial art for both self defense and self cultivation. He alternated Yin and Yang in a continuous set of movements, the idea being that the quiet can control the active. By embedding within these movements special techniques to strengthen the mind, focusing the concentration, and increasing perception, he was able to generate harmony between thought and action, thereby achieving that “tranquility even when under attack” that he had admired in the snake. There are parking garages at 9th and L Street, 11th and K Street, 11th and I Street and 12th and H Street. Parking is close to all restaurants!

McHenry Mansion Docent Training The McHenry Mansion at 15th & I is up and running after this year’s restorations required after the fire that so luckily was extinguished before it could to catastrophic damage. The mansion has been thoughtfully restored and volunteers are needed for a new wave of docents, tour guides and various other positions. Become a vital part of the Modesto community by giving tours and maybe even serve on a committee. Training begins the end of January. Call Les Clements for information at (209) 527-6589.

Ballet Folklorico Xochipilli y Los Falcones will perform at the Modesto Library on Saturday, Jan 19 at 12:30pm. The performance will display Mexico’s rich dance heritage as dancers perform in traditional costumes to time-honored music. The audience will be amazed as dancers twirl across the stage in their beautiful costumes! More information- Modesto Library Reference Desk - (209) 558-7814.

There are some new things happening in Downtown Modesto! The Copper Rhino has closed and is soon to reopen as the Surf Bar. VW Buses, vintage theme and great cocktails and a new focus on live music.

Hero’s is back! Bill Coffey is back at the helm of Hero’s and St. Stan’s Brewery. New beers, new flavors, a pastry chef that is using beer as an ingredient in the menu and get this, drum roll please… live music! The Stage is being redesigned with new lights, new sound and a line-up that already includes: The ChopTops- Jan 26, Melodramatics- Jan 30 and The English Beat on March 2. Keep an eye on our event calendar at modestoview.com for event listings. Publishers Note: Took them forever to get through the Entertainment Commission ( a process that seriously needs to be revised.) We need more new nightclubs, venues for live music and restaurants and cafes that host live music and events. This is good for Modesto and we need to make it a priority. Stay tuned with us for a new project from Roman Wagner, owner of both the MAMA-Winning P Wexford’s Pub and The Boardroom called “Rivets – An American Grill” on Oakdale Rd. Should be just as well done and great for the east side.
