tively and literally. As we race into the summer harvest and food processing season with high temperatures, we are also running hot with so may activities and great things to do. We have raced into July at 100 MPH with chrome pipes a blazing! We just finished an amazing Graffiti Summer and opened our Modesto Historic Cruise Route “Walk of Fame”. We are so proud here at ModestoView for being the driving force in the creation of our downtown Modesto American Graffiti history tours and markers. It is so rewarding to see both our locals and our tourists, reading about our history and checking out our sidewalk markers celebrating our Legends of the Cruise. Best of all, we had a monster party for the unveiling with stars of American Graffiti Candy Clark and Bo Hopkins. Modesto is celebrating the good things about who and what we are. The lesson now is that we have to do more to tell our story. We need to tell our story about the good things that happen here. We have to show our visitors and welcome our new businesses. Every single person here in town needs to make it their mission to tell our positive Modesto stories. ModestoView is here to help as each issue should bring you new insights to what is happening here in town. Folks, we need all support locally owned businesses. This is really a simple math problem. If you see me around please say hello and give me a hug. I’m going through a bit of a tough time lately. I suppose that is a solid way to open this article. The opening is always the hardest part for me. It’s where I try to ease readers into the rest of the article. I usually am vague when I write the opening but this time you are probably wondering what the heck is wrong with me. Those that have read my column over the years in one form or another know all about my battle with Cancer and my liver transplant. You know that I have through some pretty hard times. You know that I have wanted to quit fighting a number of times but that I kept charging ahead like an angry rhino for my daughters. Without going into too much detail I can say here that my fight has been reignited. The fire has been rekindled. My body is not a happy camper. It seems that even with the transplant, I cannot seem to fight off inflammatory disease. At the the moment three different diseases are playing havoc within me. They seem to be playing King of the Mountain. They are fighting for total supremacy. You may wonder why I can be so free and giving with this information. You may wonder why I seem comfortable and at peace when I should be a wreck. Here’s the deal and a bit of friendly advice - Fight adversity by focusing on the good. When I was first diagnosed about 10 years ago I was given six short months to live but I dismissed that timeframe by thinking about my daughters. This year I have watched Grace (13) walk the stage during her junior high graduation and I was able to send Lauren (18) to San Francisco to celebrate her milestone birthday. That’s good stuff. That’s all positive. The other thing that I focus on is my love for this city we call home. I wasn’t born and raised here but I’ll always consider Modesto my one true hometown. Travel a bit and take the time to live in different places. I have lived in and visited some of the most natural and beautiful places in the world. I

SUPER KARTS ARE COMING!

enjoyed each place for the natural features, the cultural and the history but in every case, I was unimpressed by the people. Modesto folks are good people. They wrap their arms around others and support their community like no other place I have ever been. I receive kind words, hugs and handshakes almost daily here and those are the simple cost-free things that keep me moving forward. Spend some time with your friends and neighbors this month. Fire up the grill, swim, float down a river and take in a few local productions. July brings a Fourth of July parade downtown and a variety of shows at the Gallo Center for the Arts and

the State Theatre. Get some rest this month and relax a bit because August is going to be very busy. Professional Kart races will start the month and X-Fest will end it. You can find event details at ModestoView.com where we are really trying to grow our efforts by sharing more events scheduled in and out of the area. Feel me to email me at r.porras@me.com with ideas and suggestions. I’m also at facebook.com/rporraswriter and at twitter. com/writerlifeco. Do something fun in July. Let others in on the action. Take the time to meet people outside of your common circle. Enjoy all that is Modesto, USA.

It’s Bastille Day and French film Redux! And why not? Last year’s Bastille Day food and film festival was such a success, that it is back this year. This is the perfect way to celebrate with our friends in Europe with croissants and Champagne to celebrate an uprising in France 223 years ago that would forever change France and Europe. So if you can’t be amongst the millions on the Champs Eyses, you need to be at the State. Films include Midnight in Paris and Girl on a Bicycle with Crepes and accordion music. Don’t miss this. $13 for both films and fun. 12:30 pm State Theatre.

ART Art July 2014

by Jim Christiansen

Roger Hanner sent me a note on my facebook page, to let me know we had an Emmy Award winning, Navy Veteran visual artist living in Modesto. That artist is Bob Davidson, who has shown work at the Smithsonian and Cooperstown in relation to his sports figure portraits, and who in a 45 year career as an artist did such iconic images as paintings of the Campbell Soup kids, and the A and W Bears. Bob was the focus of the story for an Emmy awarded to journalist Brandi Hitt, then of KOVR Channel 13 in 2007 for his “Portraits of Fallen Heroes of the the Iraqi War” done of local veterans killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The aired episode was titled “A Soldiers Portrait” and featured Bob painting the portraits on air. Bob recently put up a facebook page, and has a youtube sampler of his 8 CD and bonus DVD audible edition of his book, “A Life Through a Canvas. “ Bob Davidson Productions on Facebook. July seems to be the month for art related fundraisers. Mistlin Gallery will host “Light up the Night” in an effort to bankroll new lighting for the Central California Art Association run gallery. July 26, 6 to 10 pm, with live music by Tim Allen, silent auction at the Gallery. All proceeds got to the CCAA. Tickets are $25. Murals in Motown has their Off the Wall Pop Up Art & Fashion July 11th, for their next mural. Takes place at Bella Vagos, 521 McHenry Avenue. Classic Community Murals will be adding their 7th mural very soon in an exciting location. See the other 6 locations at facebook.com/classiccommunitymurals

Artist Sara Rea at Artwalk Art in the Alley Group McHenry Museum will host a free public discussion sponsored by the James Irvine Foundation, July 10. MoBand conductor and director George Gardner, singer-guitarist Patty Castillo Davis, and Modesto street performer Dellanora Green visit the McHenry Museum to discuss “How Should We Balance Access and Excellence in the Arts?” One way, add a visual artist to the mix. Chartreuse Muse will be ending the run of “Cats and Dogs” with their annual Emergent Artists show. Mistlin Gallery will replace its American Graffiti, Faces of Clay and CCAA members show mid-month with a Sixties Theme show. Into guitars and rock memorabilia. Catch the Rock the Carnegie show in Turlock. Some art events you can attend free this month, every Wednesday 5 to 8:30 Oakdale Farmers Market Artists Corner. Merced

Art Hop comes up July 19. Second Saturday Art Night in Sonora, and Sacramento. And Downtown Modesto Third Thursday Art Walk July 17. For those of you buying art, remember most visual artist have some expense beyond creating the painting, like frames and mats, but also variables like

booth fees, show entry fees, investment in pop ups and tables, easels, to get that bargain you can’t live without. Visual artists often have investment, even in shows free to them, in time spent to get a sale. My favorite Art Walk spot last month, the Artists in the alley on J Street.

BAR

Veni, Vidi, Vino, Vito’s

by a lushed out Kate Serpa Photos by Philip Johnson

The 4th of July is the ultimate drunk girl of preferably indoors, and, most importantly, all the calendar holidays. Respectable, reasonable holidays have the decency to come at the mid or end of the month -- they give you something to look forward to, and give you time to plan and prepare. The 4th is a no-go for planning pleasantries; it’s like, “I’m coming in immediately, so you better buy expensive fireworks that leave you feeling unfulfilled and smelling like sulfur, and you better go to your boring neighbor’s bbq in the heat and sun with a whole lot of people you don’t care for and have to talk to while you sweat your face off, and you better tell everyone you love me or else you’re unpatriotic.” If those aren’t some drunk girl demands there, I don’t know what is. I do want to confirm, however, that I am not unpatriotic; I support all things American, I just don’t like being teased. After the 4th, nothing is really happening until freaking October, which leaves an ocean-sized blank space of not a whole lot to do. Boo. My July-October promise to you, ModestoView, is to keep my outings with Phil fresh,

8

classy as hell. You know that euphoric feeling you get when you go into a restaurant you’ve never been to? You eat amazing food, drink amazing drinks, look around and wonder, “Why the hell haven’t I been here before? And where is the damn Lyft that is going to cart my lushed-out sensory-overloaded body home?” See, I’ve worked downtown for quite a while now. I feel fairly confident I know about the places that should be on the map; what I like about downtown Modesto(Tresetti’s), and what I don’t so much care for (waiting in line to get into anywhere) -- and yet Modesto, being the elusive town she can sometimes be, never ceases to roll out surprises. Right when I think I’ve been everywhere and downtown stagnancy starts to set in, Phil always finds something fantastic that’s been right under my nose. Phil says there’s only one place in Modesto he’ll go to for Italian -- seriously, how have I never been to Vito’s Ristorante?

SUPER KARTS ARE COMING!

Vito’s refers to itself as “A taste of Italy in downtown Modesto.” The dark interior, frescoed walls, exposed full kitchen, breezeway patio dining, lush foods, smooth cocktails, and elegant bar send out a more East Coast sumptuous vibe to me -- which makes total sense as owner and manager Ray Ashak is a windy city native. I’m fairly certain Ray and Ben Mello, bar manager, were trying to seduce Phil and I with amazing food and drink porn: Ray brought out seared tuna, caprese salad, and crab cakes so decadent you had to cut them like cake, while Ben poured out pomegranate martinis, manhattans (both restaurant favorites), and mojitos. Mojitos (along with anything blended) usually top the list of most-hated to make cocktails, so any bartender who will willingly make a mojito without so much as an eye roll deserves a firm handshake and a big tip in my opinion. “Don’t you hate making mojitos?” I asked Bartender Ben. “I don’t hate making anything,” he responded. “I love making cocktails. It can get boring pouring wine and beer all night. I enjoy building drinks.” Vito’s bar is full of everyone’s favorites; they have the right balance of everyone’s choice

poison without the frills. A cut and clean wine list spells out perfectly pairable bottles for dinner and house sangria -- absolutely everything is also offered by the glass, which is a bit of a rare sight. Reading the menu and looking around the bar, one can’t help but notice all the big local names are heavy in play: Sciabica, Stanislaus Foods, Cold House, Dust Bowl, Gallo, to name a few. “We always try to do fresh here at Vito’s. Fresh opens up your taste buds,” states Ray. And before I forget, since the last MoBand is hot on our heels, do be sure to inquire about Vito’s Moband special -- any two sandwiches, or a pizza off the lunch menu, PLUS a bottle of house wine for $35. Basically a super impressive date spread for you uncreative sorts. So I am formally inviting you, ModestoView fancy people, to keep skanky July classy with Phil and me at Vito’s Ristorante bar. 918 13th St., Modesto, CA 576.1851 Vitosmodesto.com

So, dear readers, were you able to attend a local drama, dance or musical production? Our area has lots to offer if you are driving 10 minutes or an hour to attend a venue. CHEF

Dana~licious Goes Direct! by Dana Johnson

Direct Appliance (DA) since 1995! Where New to me, a speed oven! Yes, as a Mom have I been? I was like a kid in a candy store as I marveled at all the culinary discoveries in the cutting edge major appliance store! No chef training required to shop for the latest and the greatest upgrades that would surely bring new life to most any kitchen. Ron and Colleen Winter are the owners of both DA stores here in Modesto. The gorgeous newly remodeled showroom is on McHenry; while the outlet and service center is on K St. I love the fact that DA has close ties to the community and regularly supports Modesto. DA generously allows Modesto Junior College (MJC) to hold hands on adult culinary classes in their functional showroom kitchens on a weekly basis. Yes, I do occasionally teach a class for MJC at this amazing location as well. Also, every year for the Color the Skies charity event in Ripon, DA donates the use of a range for a free demonstration culinary booth. Jessica Coleman the director and founder of this awesome charity benefitting Children’s Hospital of Madera have enlisted me to be a part of the culinary stage along with several chefs and students from the Institute of Technology (IOT) program here in Modesto. I love how we all can come together and make such a positive difference! Let’s shop! Induction cooktops have been around since the 1950’s according to Ron. I love this type of cook top, it’s flat, no actual specific burners, no grates to scrub, extra room for more magnetic pots that are required, best to go see this wonder for yourself! DA has steam ovens that open up an entirely new way of preparing healthier and I imagine moister meals. Yes, they have indoor grills by the top manufacturers like Wolf, Viking, and Thermador with infrared heat.

10

of 3 kiddos, numerous jobs, and love my social life, speed cooking may just become my new way of life! It’s a combination of a microwave and a conventional oven. Microwave starts the cooking process and the conventional oven does the browning. Why am I thinking roast with all the goodies and licking my lips?! As my shopping continued I met a sweet elderly lady browsing the showroom. She was excited to tell me that her children had remodeled their kitchens through DA and how impressed she was that she was inspired to update her kitchen. DA has its own contractor license that’s a huge incentive when considering such a large home project. Suddenly my mind is racing with thoughts of a custom cooking island, new counters with a custom backsplash, glass or tile, so many possibilities, including granite that comes factory sealed and a lifetime. Did you know you could have a built in coffee machine? Check this out; pour in the coffee beans, it grinds it, measures it, and makes a fresh cup of Joe at a time, or latte/ cappuccino, what a way to start the day! Perhaps you have imagined a free standing or built in 4 bottle wine dispensers? Ron says it so well, “To present the wine in its most favorable environment.” I was thinking a crystal stemmed glass to my lips was my most favorable environment! Cheers darlings! Modesto View‘s Signature Question; Beatles or Stones? Ron, “Oh Beatles, I’m a musician, don’t get me wrong I like the Stones, too.” Yes Ron plays in a local band called Remedy out of Oakdale see them at the Sierra View Music Festival August 23rd in Oakdale. Colleen, “Beatles because they made music.” Since I was completely thrilled with my shopping experience I let that slide!

AUTHOR

Dedicated to Ray Bradbury, Mr. Electrico by Ken White

“Deep in winter they had looked for bits and pieces of summer and found it in furnace cellars or in bonfires on the edge of frozen skating ponds at night. Now, in summer, they went searching for some little bit, some piece of the forgotten winter.” – Ray Bradbury, Dandelion Wine I’m a lizard. I love the heat. I could never live where it snows or rains all the time. My safe harbor is way out in Summer Country. The Summer Solstice is my favorite day; the longest day of the year. The day the darkening begins and we slide toward winter. The gardenia is my favorite flower. It smells of summer and new beginnings. It’s like a botanical time machine. I smell it and I’m there. Once more. Déjà vu all over again. Summer means baseball and chlorinated swimming pools; cool mornings, warm breezes, and late nights. It means camping and golfing, fresh-cut lawns and BBQs. The Boardwalk, county fairs, home-made ice cream, and cruising. It’s the time of year when I want to smash the clock and burn the calendar. It reminds me of my favorite novel, Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury, and the magical summer of 12-year-old Douglas Spaulding, who realizes he’s truly alive and learns many things about life. It’s a book I read every summer to remind me. It is summer bottled and stoppered so you can taste any day by simply sipping a little Dandelion Wine. When summer is here, all is right with the world. Summer is the musty scent of old Boy Scout tents and sleeping bags in my friend’s backyard, moving mattresses into the living room because there’s no air circulating in the air condition-less bedrooms, and watching Johnny Carson until Dad comes home from his second job at the gas station. Summer is itchy legs and backs from wrestling in the grass, black-bottomed feet and bee stings from never wearing shoes, and beet-red backs from too much sun. Summer is fishing at Pine Crest Lake, freak rain storms, and MoBand concerts in the park. Summer is pesky mosquitos, Slip ‘n Slide, fresh tomatoes, and cooling off in the canal. Summer is the 4th of July parade, fireworks, and burning your bare feet on a smoldering sparkler. Summer is Playland and Zero candy bars, girls in bikinis, and riding with the rag top down. It is the perpetual summer of California where everyone is Peter Pan and no one ages. And every ending is a happy one. I wish summer could last forever.

Owner Vandalism and Building Restoration by Bob Barzan

I’d like to think that the days of covering the façade of a Victorian house with asbestos shingles or the brick walls of an early 20th century building with stucco are long gone, but this type of owner paid for vandalism continues today. Owners, especially with properties in economically challenged areas, are misguided into thinking that “modernizing” the exterior of their buildings will lead to new tenants and economic stability. We’ve known for decades that this is almost never successful. A recent sad example in Modesto is the painting of the concrete walls of the Wells Fargo branch on McHenry Avenue. The original World Savings Building was designed by the noted trio of Peters, Clayberg, and Caulfied in 1972 and was a remarkable example of brutalist modernism. The once textured and shaded concrete walls are now duller and flatter than any wide expanse of stucco. You don’t have to be a fan of brutalism to realize the aesthetics and the architectural integrity of the building are significantly diminished for the effort Perhaps the most offensive examples of owner vandalism are on the block of 10th Street between I and J. Historic photos of the street show handsome early 20th century, art deco, and California colonial buildings. Today the block, mostly covered in stucco, is one of the most unsightly in the city. The good news is under the stucco of many of those buildings are the original facades waiting to be uncovered. We have long known that the best way to

It isn’t as if the building must be frozen in time; rather, any changes should be in keeping with the style and scale of the original building especially the exterior. In cities all across the country, programs are now in place to return historic altered buildings to their original beauty. If you have any doubt that restoration of historic buildings can be done successfully in Modesto, just look at what the Finch Fund has done with the former post office building. They have created a 21st century office building and maintained its architectural integrity and beauty. Wouldn’t it be fantastic to see something similar happen to other historic buildings in Modesto? Buildings like the old Elk’s Building and the former World Savings Building on I Street, as well as the Beaty Building on J Street are ripe for sensitive restoration and reuse. By educating ourselves about these buildings and working with restoration and preser-

GoModesto! Beatles – State July 6

Yeah Yeah Yeah It has been 50 years to the day of the premier of Hard Day’s Night. This is the original rock and roll movie. The cinema verite that followed the moptops from Liverpool as they ascended to superstardom was ground breaking. The music was infectious and Beatlemania encircled the globe. From the legendary 1st Chord through all 120 minutes of madcap mayhem, the movie changed everything and music would never be the same. The film stands tall today and is perfect for all ages. To mark this auspicious occasion, The State is throwing a party with live music, courtesy of Elementary Penguin and sponsors Chris Murphy and Gary Nelson from the Third Party Band, so don your best black-and-white Mod attire (gogo boots, bellbottoms, mini dresses, and other Carnaby Street fashions from the day), have a Beatle-tini, and experience the new 4K digital restoration and newly remixed 5.1 surround soundtrack. Doors and dancing at 3 p.m.; film at 4 p.m. Admission: $12

ROCKABILLY

July, our half way point of summer fun, let the fireworks begin!!

Whether you are sitting lakeside in a vintage bikini or taking your fancy convertible out for a nice summer drive, carnivals, festivals and fairs are a place we venture to watch the children win the games that the carnies try so hard for us to play. Animal shows and horse racing. Those killer lemonade stands with a spool full of Cotton Candy. My favorite part is that the fair brings us local and national music to enjoy! Looking throughout the years of Stanislaus front man Eli Allsup, for his uncle Michael County Fair, finding the musical aspects Allsup of “Three Dog Night” will be playwere challenging, starting out with Turlock’s first Melon Carnival in 1911, first held in the downtown area of Main Street where farmers donated watermelons to serve under the big tent for watermelon rolling contests. Shortly after a group of musicians, gathered to become the Melon Band. The Carnival stopped in 1941 which was then called the “Stanislaus District Fair” then cancelled due to World War II. In 1942-44 a carnival was held in the downtown area to add some war time relief. The first “Stanislaus County Fair “, started in 1956. Still haven’t found any type of musical acts that were ever mentioned that played these carnivals or fairs in a many year span, sadly. Then I came to 1984 where the crowds were filled with excitement with acts like “Paul Revere & the Raiders”, “Johnny & June Cash” and the “Marshall Tucker Band”. Wishing I was there in 1984! Price for the fair then was $2.00 for adults and .50 cents for children. Definitely would have been well worth the price of admission! The Fair presented more musical acts, and added another free stage for our local artists. This brings us to a younger generation of musical youth and some oldtimers to add to the mix. Eli Goodtimes and the Oldtimers will be playing the local stage on July 19th from 8pm-9:30. This will be the final show of Eli Goodtimes and the Oldtimes, Eli Allsup vocals and rhythm guitar, Christian E Boyatt lead guitar and vocals, Stepehen Meeker harmonica; Nathan Ignacio drums and Jacob Canada bass. I suggest if you have not seen these gentlemen, go check them out at the fair. This is especially exciting for the

Tony Ramirez, Mike Beeler & Hans Beeler

I love racing. Bicycle, foot, car, swim, anything. I love our car racing history, and I used to race bicyles and present bicycle racing in downtown Modesto back in the 80s and Modesto is a great place to race. We have some amazing local racers in many sports and there are miles and miles of great stories. Two of these really connected with me and our classic heritage. One I discovered by accident during my American Graffiti research and the other lives next door. My little cul-de-sac is racing central. My neighbor Mike Beeler (of Beeler Industries) races stock cars, sprint cars and GoKarts. We have RF mini car races in the street and there is usually a super high-tech GoKart in the garage with some sort of new speed aid being installed. Mike’s father Bill Beeler, piloted the fastest GoKart in the world in 1963 (now on display at Talladega Museum) and his son Hans is growing up feeling the need for speed. Tony Ramirez had a cool Modesto childhood. As the son of our most famous carhop, Geri Ramirez at Burge’s Drive-In. Tony had a ring-side seat to the most interesting part of Americana and saw all aspects of our car culture. Tony had racing in his blood and felt the need for speed and became a champion racer. Bill Beeler and Tony Ramirez was there the beginning, racing super hotrod GoKarts, so fast that one was outlawed. It all started in 1955 with Duffy Livignstone who invented the racing cart in Azuza and the first racing track was built in1957. This is when our local Beeler and Ramirez families were racing. Tony won the State Championship in 1960 and both Bill and Tony competed at the National Championships in Azuza in 1960. Today, Tony lives in Jamestown and is enjoying his life with his family and Mike Beeler’s son Hans has the racing gene and is already a champion driver at the age of

Tony Ramirez (L) and friends before race time 16 and Bill Beeler is watching at the racetrack. There are many more people our area that have racing GoKart stories, please let me know about your stories and share your pics and we will continue to tell this story and feature more people in ModestoView and our other history projects. Send your info to me at chrism@modestoview. com Tony Ramirez ModestoView: When did you first start racing and what was your GoKart like? Tony Ramirez: I started in about 1958. It was exciting and had large turn outs by participants and spectators. MV: Who did you race against and what was your most exciting victory? TR: I raced with and competed against all the greats of my day. My most exciting race was the year I won the State Title but it was a race leading up to that in San Jose. The first heat race I broke a chain and came in last. Mind you there was about 75 karts in that class. In the second heat I started last and

SUPER KARTS ARE COMING!

by time I got to the end of the straightaway, I passed about 40 karts. By the end of that heat I was in second place. The 3rd heat I won. I was sitting in the Pit Area and a fella came up and handed my father a check for a large some of money for my engines, but dad turned him down. It was the year of the Nationals and I had qualified by winning the State Championship. MV: What did kart racing mean to you as a kid and later as an adult? TR: This is easy, I had a fun and have great memories of my parents . MV: Does it amaze you to see the new technology in the new SuperKarts? TR: Not really. Speed is Speed. I feel we went just as fast. I know that I went 75 to 100 MPH and maybe more depending which course and what type of race. They do have better technology and parts but I like the old days . MV: What advice would you give a young racer thinking about the sport?

TR: Make sure your parents can afford it, my dad bought 2 new karts with engines for $250.00 MV: What was your favorite racing moment? TR: When I was first approached by my first manufacturer to represent their company. If you noticed one of the pictures I sent you was of me and my father. I was wearing a Fox Racing Team vest. The same Fox Logos that you see today on hats and clothing. Same company. Racing is in the Beeler family blood. Bill Beeler raced against Tony Ramirez back in the early 60s and today, Mike Beeler is a regular feature on the local racing scene, dicing it with his fellow “type of racing” at the Stockton 99, and raced just about every kind of vehicle. Beeler Industries produces high tech nut and food processing equipment as will as donating the beautiful Car Hop MAMA Awards each year. Technology and racing blood go hand in hand at the Beeler house.

Mike Beeler ModestoView: Was racing part of your life as you were growing up? Mike Beeler: Yes we were always competing on something, slot cars, roller skates, bicycles, skate boards. Then my brother crashed our minibike into a tree and knocked himself out cold. That was the end of that. The only way to race something after that was to buy it myself. First a minibike, then dirt bikes, three wheelers, and four wheelers. We raced on makeshift tracks down on the river and canal banks. There were places you just needed to know where they were. Then we started with four of us from Escalon, Dan Tillema,

Mike Beeler , ready to race in Atwater, 1985

Marty Adrian, Kurt Poulis and we bought sprint karts in spring of 1980. We played on the local tracks for a summer. That got the itch going and I’ve run successfully on speedway dirt Karts, sprint karts, modified midgets, mini sprints, shifter karts, modifieds, and now late model stock cars. MV: What was your earliest racing memory? MB: My early memories include Cris Econamacki on wide world of sports and he was calling the Daytona 500 and Talladega superspeedway races. Pop had 52 or 52 kart trophies in a case over the B&W TV. That always sparked my interest. He was done with karting when I was two so I don’t re-

My brother raced two seasons at the 99 speedway in 75 I think, I was almost 15 then and one Saturday night he asked if I wanted to hot lap it, I jumped in and went for it, that’s something you don’t forget! I didn’t crash it so he could race that night. MV: What lessons on racing and business did you get from your dad? MB: Dad always said there is no money in racing. He was right. I raced him once at Camelot park, he’s a different guy with a helmet on. Two good lessons. MV: How important is racing to your family and community lifestyle? MB: Racing has provided my family many good times spent together. Karting especially had us all there traveling on weekends going to races. Time together is your greatest gift. MV: Do you think kart racing is getting more popular today than before? MB: The karting scene has been growing on the larger venue’s like the GP coming to Modesto, karting was all the rage in the early sixties, not sure that level can be matched today or in the future. I wish it would, I am all for it. MV: What does it cost to build and operate a race caliber cart? MB: When we raced shifter karts in 2000-

Tony Ramirez speeding through the corners

2003 we could get a good chassis and motor for about $7500.00 and race a weekend with fuel and tires some food and a bed for $450 to $500 bucks. We ran a low buck operation out of the back of a pick up and spent about $12 grand for the season. I am sure we will be looking at teams with a tire budget larger than that when the Modesto GP comes to town. MV: How far do you want to take your involvement in racing? MB: I am about at the pinnacle of my career with the late models. I will try to get on larger scale tracks for the enjoyment and to say I did it. I hope to be able to support Hans with some lower levels like I did and hope we get to race a season or two together somewhere. I guess that depends on his grades and attitude. MV: Any thanks you want to give out to people on your team? MB: I like to thank Mike Kuykendal for building me fast kart motors and great expansion chambers and for providing great advise and motivation. To skip along to current I have to thank Mike David, “David’s Racing products” for giving us a great car and team to win the All American 100 at Roseville in June and have us in the points lead in the Pacific Challenge Series. Thanks Mike David! Interview continued next page...

POETRY THE PULL

by Sam Pierstorff

MJC English Professor & Ninja Poet I spent the summer I was seven in our neighbor’s swimming pool, mostly underwater so anyone who looked down on me was blurred— their clothing, fuzzy rainbows, faces stretched like Silly Putty. Nearly 30 years have past, and I am back in the pool, this time learning lessons my divorced parents never taught me, like how to stay on top of the water when your ankles become anvils that want to drag you down, or how your body must rotate like a pig on a spit, but still, as your body burns, you must reach as far as you can with every stroke.

Watch now as my hand enters the water the same way it slides into the sleeve of a collared shirt, then the pull. The most important move happens underwater where no one can see. Your wrist bends toward the bottom of the pool. Your arm is an oar pushing the water back before your hand snaps past the surface and circles back in. And now, as I climb onto the starting block and think about my next race, I remember the pull— how hard we must always push back if we want to move forward.

Commercial Composting Is Easy The City of Modesto wants your food scraps! For the past seven years we have been collecting food waste from local restaurant owners and hospitals that are participating in our Commercial Composting Program and turning it into an organic compost product that is sold to farmers, local landscapers and the general public. To date we have collected 4,600 tons of food waste thanks to the participation of an estimated 20 local business that generate compostable materials. With your help, we can do better and divert even more food waste from our landfills. This program is a true partnership between the City of Modesto and its’ contracted haulers. The program requires a two-bin system. One bin is designated for compostable materials only and the other bin is for all remaining garbage. The food waste is picked up several times a week and transported out to the City’s compost facility on Jennings Road. It is at that site where it undergoes a process of aeration and decomposition and eventually is sold as a soil amendment rich in nutrients. If you are a Modesto restaurant owner or a business that generates food waste and are interested in being a part of this worthwhile commercial food waste program and potentially saving money on your monthly garbage service, please give the Solid Waste Division a call at (209) 577-5495.

MAMA Is it July already? by Middagh Goodwin It’s been a year since I moved back to

Modesto and wow what a ride it has been. I have reconnected with a lot of old friends and made many new ones. I have booked over a 100 shows with national, international and tons of locals. We brought legends such as Ian McLagan, Agent Orange, Roddy Radiation/Lynval Golding of the Specials, Annabella Lwin(of Bow Wow Wow), Reverend Horton Heat. Created two series Rockabilly Cruise Night and the Brew Ha Ha(with Jimmie Menezes) both of which have become successful. Won a MAMA(Best Promoter) and helped The Brewhouse win Best Venue. Earlier this year I started writing this column for the Modesto View and hope that you all have enjoyed reading it. My expectations have been exceeded and the future looks bright. None of these things would have happened without the support of Bill Coffey and the staff at the Brewhouse, without the dedication of all the local bands who have played for us over the past year and most importantly all the music fans who come out and support live music time and time again. I also want to thank Chris Murphy and the View Crew who put so much effort on an almost daily basis to keep us all informed and entertained they make my job a little easier. Year One down now lets see what Year Two has in store for all of us. I had a guy come out to Renegade Conspiracy / Comacova show recently and while a Table for Five was rocking out on stage in front of 75 people looked around and said there is nothing to do in Modesto. I picked up the Modesto View turned to the calendar section and said nope nothing at all. Perception is an interesting thing and you hear all the time that Modesto is boring there is nothing to do, etc. The exact opposite is the case there is so much to do in Modesto and you don’t have to look far to find it. I will be highlighting a few events that are not to be missed this month in and around Modesto. I personally am very excited to see Joan Jett and the Blackhearts performing July 19th at the Stanislaus County Fair. I have seen Joan Jett several times over the years and have to say the Fair shows are some of my favorites; she performs a long set featuring all the hits including I Love Rock and Roll, Crimson and Clover, Cherry Bomb and I

am sure some songs off the newest album “Unvarnished. There is always something happening at the Brewhouse at Hero’s and it is hard to narrow down to a few must see shows like July 24th Voodoo Glow Skulls the SoCal Kings of SKAcore going strong since 1988. If you have seen them live I know you will be back for more. Joining them are Monkey(Asian Man Records) and Before Twenty(Modesto SKAPodge Legends-members of Trashboat/Thought Riot...) On July 25th there will be a benefit show for My Friends & I II featuring some of the areas best including House of Orange(2011 Best Americana), Josh Rosenblum Band(2012 Pop Rock), Prof Maxx Smith, Tractor Boy and more, a fun night of music which will help document some of the best the area music scene has to offer. July 26th a night of Punk, SKA and Rock with Left Alone(Hellcat Records featuring Elvis Cortez guitarist for the Transplants), The Interrupters(Epitaph Records and backing band for Tim Timebomb(Rancid), Peaceable Jones(2007 Best P3) and Terrible Timing(one of the best new Punk/SKA bands to come out of the 209.) The Brew Ha Ha, Modesto longest running comedy showcase is back on the third Friday of every month, July 18th come out for a night of laughter with Jimmie Menezes hosting, Cory Robinson headlining and featured comedians Danny Cruzz, Nick Larson, Charles Scott and more. My26 will be in the house once again filming all the fun and laughter for Comedy on 26! a brand new comedy TV show produced right here in Modesto. Some other key events in the 209, Big Earl is booking bands up in Columbia at the Bixel Brewery July 4th House of Orange(2011 Americana) and the Rob Hill Band are playing a Free Fourth of July Celebration. At the Other Place where Hard Rock and Metal are stronger then ever July 11th EveFest featuring Nothing But Losers(2011 Best Metal), Zombie Death Stench(2012 Best Metal), Z-Strain and more. July 13th at Deva Dandelion Massacre(2011 Alt Rock) host a show with Days n’ Daze(TX), Broken Bow(CO) and Chop Off!. Hari Kari(2011 Best Blue Collar) are playing up at the Whiskey Barrel in Stockton. July 26th 209 Production has a Metal show at the Other Place featuring Better

BLUES & JAZZ Summer Rolls On

by Eric Benson And summer rolls on with work, kids on vacation, road trips and a whole lotta heat. But after you’ve settled into the routine of rolling through the farmer’s markets and eateries and got your caffeine intake up to therapeutic levels, take some time out to hear some live music and the arts of our town that helps us enjoy the good live that we have here in the Central Valley. Blue Monday monthly Invitational Jam continues at the Barkin’ Dog Grill on the first Monday each month. Ultra Lounge hosts the jam with special guest Jamie Dubberly arranger and trombonist and winner of 2013 Latin Grammies in the Latin Jazz category. Band features Johnny Valdez on guitar, vocals, Tim Allen on bass and vocals, Kelly Ramirez on drums, yours truly Eric Benson on keys. Will be playing Blues, R & B, Funk and Latin music for listening and dancing. This month will be doing some Horace Silver tunes since this fine arranger, composer and pianist passed away in June. Show goes 7:00 to 10:00 PM. Call for reservations if you want a good seat. July 7th. SAVE THE DATE: Blue Monday Party August 4th at the Barkin’ Dog features special guest artist Barry Finerty one of the better modern Jazz guitarists in the business. Profiles in Philharmonic Poetry: Chris Doud

by Aaron Rowan

URBAN

Interview with DJ Monster Mack By Javier Lopez

Them old-time country songs sure have some hilarious titles, don’t they? ‘If I Can’t Be Number One In Your Life, Then Number Two On You’ by Mel Tillis comes to mind. And don’t forget Roger Miller’s classic ‘You Can‘t Roller Skate In A Buffalo Herd.’ Perhaps it was tunes such as these that inspired the creators of the 52 Week Club to introduce a recent theme like ‘No Makeup And A Messy Pony.’ Based out of Oakdale, The 52 Week Club has been a great creative songwriting collective for the past decade (July 4 marks the ten-year anniversary of the first week’s theme.) It has members scattered all over the country, including many in the San Joaquin Valley. A new word or phrase serves as the basis for a song assignment each week. At www.heckabad.com/52 you can read a list of themes going back to the beginning. I was not entirely surprised to find that some of my favorite pieces by several of my favorite local players have been sparked by a 52 Week theme. The club was originally founded by Will Taylor and Tom VandenAvond, both masterful songwriters; but another of its earliest members, Chris Doud, gets my vote for the finest lyricist in the greater Modesto area When not busy co-fronting the finest Americana/country band in our area, The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit, Mr. Doud can occasionally be found sharing his solo material with audiences here and there. Chris crafts lyrics rife with visual imagery. He even took poetry classes during college as a way to improve his songwriting. Lyrically, Chris draws from the work of Bob Dylan, John Prine, Paul Simon and Leonard Cohen, to name a few. Musically, his influences are all over the map, from the folk music he was exposed to in his childhood trips to the Strawberry Music Fest, to the sounds of U2 and The Pixies in high school, to the eclectic acts featured on the Dr. Demento Show. Chris has cut 5 solo records, comprised almost entirely of 52 Week songs; and was featured on the Portraits album released by Off The Air Recordings a few years ago. His own independent label, Heckbad Re-

22

cords, has handled albums by a number of local Americana and country favorites: Cole Thomason, Tom VandenAvond, Will Taylor, and of course, The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit. In 2013, Chris shared the MAMA Singer/Songwriter award with Will Taylor and Joey Essig for their collaboration on the children’s CD ‘Color This Album.’ His most recent solo record ‘Story Song’ (his first since the formation of the GLTSO nine years ago) is a beautiful collection of mostly mellow country-folk tunes, which I’ve been listening to most every day for a couple weeks now. You can have a listen at heckabad.bandcamp.com. A few of the acoustic happenings this month: Tuesday 7/8 - Country quartet The Dustbowl Children appearing at the Stanislaus Grown farmers market at 2150 Yosemite Ave. Market runs 3-7 PM, band plays at 5 PM. Thursday 7/10 - a panel of area musicians including Patty Castillo Davis, Delanora Green and MoBand director George Gardner will explore the question of how to balance access and excellence in the arts. This free public forum, moderated by the editor of the Modesto Bee, will be held at McHenry Museum (1402 I St.), starting at 5:30 PM. Saturday 7/12 - SoCal folk songbird Josephine Johnson shares the stage with Modesto’s Black Velvet Band, who’ll perform classic tunes from the 1960’s and beyond. Show is at Barkin’ Dog Grill, 940 11th St., starting at 7 PM. $5 cover. Friday 7/25 - Ethereal songwriting duo Mark Lemaire & Twilight give a free concert in the 10th St. Plaza, 7-9 PM, offering up beautiful harmonies and intricate instrumentalism. Brave the heat and enjoy a special treat.

SUPER KARTS ARE COMING!

I would like to kick off this 4th of July saw my dedication so he made me some with special guest DJ Monster Mack, beginning with an exclusive look into his DJ career as it unfolds. TL: How did you get your name? DJM: When I first started DJ’ing, I asked my dad for a name. We went through a lot of names and we wanted something to sound big and badass and beast mode. He said “like a monster”, so I was like, cool, and I kept the name DJ Monster. Then I started uploading mixes on the internet and I realized there were a lot of DJ monsters, so I had to add something to the name in order to be the only one with that name, so I added Mack. TL: But why Mack? DJM: Well I’m a fan of Mac Dre if that explains anything. (Laughs) That’s how I got my name. TL: Tell me the story of how you started spinning. DJM: As a kid, I was really into art, drawing, painting, and graffiti. That’s when things went a li’l wrong. I was in the streets doing graffiti, my dad saw the direction I was going and he tried punishing me and all kinds of stuff parents do. But I kept going out with my friends, till he found out I had a big passion for music. I would always listen to all kinds of music just to discover new sounds and to admire every instrument in every song, so he bought me a pair of CD players. I fell in love with them. I was always in my room playing with them. I even stopped going out with my friends just to stay at home practicing. My dad

business cards. Eventually I got some gigs and bought myself better gear. That’s how I started spinning. TL: Where is your residence at now? DJM: Casanova’s Nightclub and also Palladium Nightclub in Modesto CA. TL: Are you allowed to speak on the radio station you spin on? How did that come to be? DJM: I’m mostly behind the tables. I don’t talk much, only at live shows. All the energy that people gives me makes me do all kinds of crazy stuff in my shows. TL: Tell me a story about one of the most important moments in your life that music played a role. DJM: One night we had a BBQ at home, my dad took our speakers out and one of those big TVs with li’l wheels everyone use to have back in the day instead of plasmas. He had a friend with karaoke CDs so it turned into a karaoke night. My dad was already kind of drunk he called me out to sing a song with him in front of all the family and we sang Perfume de Gardenias together. I never had had that connection with my dad, so to me it was one of the best feelings in the world, and that’s something I will never forget. TL: Anything you like to add? DJM: DJ’ing to me is a passion. I love seeing people having a good time and I like to be surrounded by positive vibes. I had a tough childhood full of yelling, fights, negative vibes, and now I have the power to make people dance, laugh and sometimes remind them of a good story in their lives.

Beat The Heat Happy July fitness friends!

As we all know this can be one of the hot-

by Efren Martinez

test months of the year in our central valley. Please be mindful of that before getting your outdoor workouts on for these next 2 months. One of the best ways to combat this is to swim. Regardless of how hot or even what time of the day it is, most likely the cool water will keep your body temperature comfortable on a hot day. Although swimming might not be for everyone, you can always settle for the comforts of any one of our coolest gyms in your area. Most of my friends including myself prefer to train outside. If so, make sure you get it in at the crack of dawn, especially if you’re a runner. I prefer running in temperatures that range between 55 and 65 degrees. When we run our bodies tend to work the hardest and your heart rate can be easily elevated which in turn heats us up. This can cause cramps, nausea and put you in the hurt locker very quickly. Cycling, on the other hand can be done comfortably even

in the mid 90’s. When we cycle at speeds of 15mph and up we have the wind to cool us down because of our riding pace. Between that and the cool water we have in our waterbottles it helps us go the extra distance on a warm day. All to often, many of us including those hardcore athletes forget to add on some extra thought to our rides and training during the summer. For most athletes just staying well hydrated throughout the week along with making sure you’re eating enough smart carbohydrates is sufficient to sustain your outdoor fitness safely. For those endurance athletes that spend hours training instead of minutes in the heat, I recommend balancing your water consumption with minerals. Make sure

your water consumption is equal with the right amounts of electrolytes and minerals, including some overlooked ones like magnesium and potassium. Have a bottle of NUUN or Gu Brew for every two water bottles you drink and use sea salt and liquid aminos on your foods. Lets keep our fitness strong, happy and healthy during these hot days of summer. Applying just a few of these recommendations should help us get the most out of our summer workouts and stay safe. Summer Fitness Tips & Recommendations.

Wearing a polar ice scarf helps keep your body cool. Keeping your tires between 110 & 115psi works well when cycling in the heat. Sun block is always a recommended regardless of what fitness you enjoy. For early morning & sunset runs, apply mosquito repellent. If your bike helmet makes any kind of contact with the road after a crash or fall, replace it. Most helmets are one incident helmets. by Big Earl Matthews Hello everyone and happy July. Summer is here and I am stuck in the house. Thats right, I am taking a little well needed down time to have a surgery that I have needed for a long while and that means I will not be performing this summer. I am still working on some of my bigger on-going projects such as “My Friends and I” as well as a few other well-chosen events that I will keep you apprised of as they come up throughout the summer. This month on the 25th we are having a Big ol’ Fun-Raiser over at The Brewhouse at Hero’s for “My Friends and I.” We have a big line-up featuring some of the acts you can look forward to hearing on Vol.2. including the Randy Mandy Band, Tawny Perkins, Red Pony, Professor Maxx Smith, Josh Rosenblum Band, Tractor-Boy and from the first MFAI cd, House of Orange. This show will go a long way toward helping us record the next installment of our project and we sincerely hope to see a packed the house. Another cool thing that is happening now is live music every Friday night in Columbia at Bixel Brewery. This will start on the fourth with the Rob Hill Band and the House of Orange and a special Saturday show on the fifth with Patty Castillo Davis.

Keep an eye on the Bixel FB page at facebook.com/thebixelbrewery for more info and to see who is playing every week. Many of you have already heard that I will be playing the Gallo Center on October 24th. This show will be my comeback performance. The tickets have only been on sale for a little while and they have been selling like hotcakes. I think we have sold close to 300 already. I am overwhelmed with your support. I can’t even tell you in words how happy this makes me feel inside. I came back to Modesto seven and a half years ago with the desire to make music in my hometown and I never looked back. You all have supported us and given us so many opportunities to shine. As I said earlier, I am on a break right now getting my health in order and having this show to look forward to is better than any medicine that could ever be made. Thank you all and I look forward to seeing you guys out at Hero’s on the 24th. Have a great summer and go see some live music. Stay Healthy & FIt

I hope that you’ve been staying active during your first month of summer! My goal is to stay healthy and fit this month. This July I am going to spend a lot of time getting back into shape for the upcoming school year. You can go down to Dry Creek to play tennis, Frisbee Golf, and bike on the trail. It’s dog friendly and jogger friendly. You can also pack a picnic and sit in the eating areas. You can play tennis at most of the high schools in town. Downey, Johansen, and MJC are my favorite places to play. I have so many memories splashing around with my sister. The Virginia Corridor Trail is a 4.2 mile trail that starts at College Av-

by Leia Johnson enue and Needham. It is a well maintained great place to bike, walk, push a stroller, and a wonderful place for a tricycle. There are many parks and places to stop at through your walk. You can also practice your track and field at high school tracks. You can also go skateboard at the Beyer High School skatepark. If you are in the mood to stay healthy you should go to Loretelli Farms. It is a very nice fruit stand on Claratina Avenue. There is corn, fruits, vegetables, honey and my family’s favorite, the pies. You can shuck your own corn and onions. Don’t forget your Frisbees or your healthy snacks. Have a great month Modesto.
