It is a red-hot sizzling summer in so many ways. It feels like it’s the 4th of July all month long. There are fun events, BBQs, parades, fairs, live music in the plazas, rock and roll on the patios and new splash pads. We are on the go here in good ole Modesto USA and ModestoView is here to help you explore everything. If you hear someone complain about the weather, we actually have it pretty good. You could be in the deep south or north east, drenched in humidity, or if in NYC, jammed together with millions of other people, or the oven-hot temps of the southwest where you get no relief, but here in Modesto, it is always a good evening and the delta breezes that roll in freshen the night for a new day. We have it pretty good and there are places to go and people to see that all fits together, especially for those MoBand nights. With our current national political scene upside down, we have to look to ourselves. We need to look at our pride, our strength, our people, our ideas, our sense of community power and who we are and depend on each other. We need to share our pride with each other and give our city a louder voice, we can get wrapped up in the bad things happening, which are the same as most other cities, but friends, we need to focus on the cool things and make that our message. The story is the same, we have to like ourselves before someone else will. Please share the ModestoView positive message with someone you know or someone new to the area. It is our readers that will be the force of change. Two things are happening that really bring our community together this month, the Modesto 4th of July Parade and Plaza Festival is a Hall of Fame event. A nice morning parade, streets and sidewalks with thousands of your best friends, celebrating the cool things and people in our community. I am honored to once again be the MC for the parade announcing from the courthouse. Thanks to all of the hard working Modesto Kiwanis volunteers that make this

Family and Friends are the best thing about Modesto summers. MoBand Concerts in the Park are our tradition. In this MoBand Crew picture, Becky, Abbey, Madison & Harrison, Frank, Gail Kate Damrell, Steve Perry, Chad and Sofia Johnson & Eva Steward happen every year. The Stanislaus County Fair is a tradition that continues to get stronger each year. Music, food, fun, animals and loads of rides make it a great tradition for families, couples and anyone. There are two more Thursday MoBand Concerts in The Park to enjoy so don’t miss them. This month will be very interesting as I and my daughter Abigail head off to Mongolia with Lonny Davis and Hope Haven West to deliver wheel chairs to those in need in areas that are rarely served. We will be doing seating clinics across Mongolia from Ulaanbaatar to nearly the Russian border. I will be updating our trip as we progress (as internet is available) at www. ModestoView.com so I hope you check it out. We stocked up on the new Sherpa line of clothing that is designed here in Modesto. Check them out at www.sherpaadventuregear.com There are amazing things being created here in the Modesto area, from the music of our local

musicians, the food offerings of companies like Sciabica and Traina, to the wines of Gallo, technical apparel by Sherpa, and even custom Two Rock amplifiers from talented people like Eli Lester, there are so many reasons that Modesto gets better all of the time. We get to know Eli in our July interview, so please give it a read. Friends, it is good to connect the dots, bring people together and celebrate local accomplishments and encourage people to shop locally. Modesto has a special place in all things 4th of July since 1974. For 144 years, Modesto USA has hosted a 4th of July Parade, making it one of the longest running in the western USA. Held on the 4th, the Modesto Fourth Parade brings out thousands of people, all celebrating out independence and freedom. People line the streets, enjoy cocktails on restaurant patios and best of all, the parade of people, companies, animals, scouts, bands, public servants and first responders is the real show. The parade starts at 9:30 am so get there early to get a great spot on 10th, J, 11th and I street. It is a fun time and I am very honored to be the parade announcer along with my friends the legendary Al Menshew and DJ Walker of KAT Country 103. This year we will celebrate Grand Marshals Lynn and Ron Dickerson and Parade Champion local author and ViewCrew member Ken White. The announcing booth is on the courthouse lawn so we hope to see you there. Once a year during July approximately 245,000 locals attend our Stanislaus County Fair in Turlock. The event celebrates family, community, and technology. Known for its agricultural roots and activities, the county fair is a huge addition to our central valley culture, education, and entertainment. The fair began back in 1911 when the Turlock Chamber of Commerce sponsored the first Turlock Melon Carnival promoting the sale and distribution of central valley agriculture; specifically, the market for the melon crop. Starting in the mid-1930’s, the 38th district of

Agriculture Association has lead the operations of the Stanislaus County Fair and has since added the 4-H and livestock shows to promote the livestock and dairy industries. To understand more about the funding and operation of the largest summer entertainment event in Stanislaus county, we interviewed Adrenna Alkhas, the Marketing & Communications Director of the Stanislaus County Fair. She explains that the State of California has eliminated funding to all county fairs. However, to keep the event alive and going, a non-profit

organization was formed. ‘Friends of the Stanislaus Fair ’is the organization whose primary goal is to enhance opportunities at the fairgrounds for the community and youth through agriculture and education. The funds received through the non-profit go back into the fair in the form of infrastructure, fans for the livestock to keep them cool, show rings, and other general necessities. One of the programs implemented to conserve the funds is Green Initiatives, a program intended to recycle waste throughout the county fairgrounds. Some impressive results to highlight are: diversion of almost all waste during the 10-day span of entertainment, waste materials composted and reused on local farms, and upgrading equipment for energy-efficiency. The Stanislaus County Fair is committed to environmental stewardship to make a positive impact on the central valley and beyond. The organization partners with local companies for a chance to promote their business. There’s several different sponsorship packages that fit unique needs for different industries. One of the common industries with this partnership is other non-profit agencies which include; The Salvation Army, Kiwanis Club, United Samaritans, Turlock Rotary Club, knights of Columbus, and the American Legion. Local organizations rely on not only on donations from the community but on the annual event, that is the Stanislaus County Fair to maintain their presence in the Central Valley. These non-profit organizations provide our community clothes, shelter for the homeless, housing for sick children, senior care, and many other basic human needs. Grab the kids, grab the sunblock, grab the spouse and together we will keep this summer tradition of the central valley alive. There’s nothing better than connecting with the community, having fun and have the money spent on fun go to a better cause. If you want to experience live music, carnival rides, beer gardens, and the best fair food in the area come join us July 13-22, 2018 at the Stanislaus County Fair in Turlock. STAGE A Divine Summer

Community Gathering Place By Chris Murphy We need a community gathering place. This summer, when we were planning the 2018 Music in the Plaza series, we were struggling on how to make this more of an event, where more people can gather and enjoy and see the band better. A stage, or some kind of community platform/ gazebo or something should be in 10th St Plaza all year long. In the meantime, we built a stage and with the teamwork of ModestoView, Sierra Pacific, the Modesto DID,

the City and the County, we built a stage that will stay up through the end of September, and hopefully longer. It has been used by many different groups and it is great to see what a good gathering place will do to bring people together. During the week, please come out and play our Star Wars themed piano and play your music. This is our community, let’s make it even better and friendlier. FILM Homeless in Modesto By Chris Murphy This project started was started by Richard An-

Ah, summer, the 5 months out of the year that we all live indoors, only leaving to take a swim or see a movie in an air conditioned building! Or, in our case, you also leave the house to find delicious and refreshing adult beverages. We’ve staked out, hunted, and sampled some refreshing cocktails this month. The winner of our search? The Divine Swine! And we want to humbly apologize that it took us so long to discover them for you! We wish we had tried this great little “BBQ Pub” in Roseburg Square sooner. This is a gem of a watering hole-it’s not a dive bar, but wouldn’t call this swanky either, it’s perfectly casual. There were families, couples of all ages, and several groups of friends just chillin’ and enjoying everything this place has to offer. The patio was perfect in the evening, and afterwards we took a stroll down the Virginia Trail, which was a great way to burn off dessert! The recipes are mostly created by owner Robert Wilson, with some contributions from his wife and mother. So while we didn’t go for the food, we enjoyed every bite of the pork rind nachos, the Chimichurrian tri-tip sandwich with garlic aioli, and chocolate cake truffles! Washing all that down was a Divine South Side

and a Peachy Keen. Why decide between savory and sweet if you can have both? The Divine South Side is made from Do Good Gin, lime juice, simple syrup and soda water. The Peachy Keen is crafted from Absolut Vanilla Vodka, peach liquor, orange and pineapple juice. Both were topped with maraschino cherries, a very traditional cocktail garnish. These cocktails impressed us: They tip their hat to the roots of cocktails while dazzling us with modern flare. The Peachy Keen especially so, we had to order a second one because we liked it so much. If summer could be liquefied, this would be it. A bright, sweet, flirty, sun-kissed beauty! Go have one tonight, and have yourself a slurp of summer! They also have some great margaritas (the pomegranate was yummy!) and a great line-up of beers. If you’re a beer person looking to quench your thirst try the Firestone Walker Milk Stout on Nitro (ice cold!) We highly recommend it. Sip on, friends!

derson in 2012 when he filmed the Berberian Shelter 2012 candle light vigil for the 11 who died homeless that year. It changed his fear and view of the homeless and he realized that many homeless do want to tell their story to a camera. The project was sidelined as he fought lung cancer, but now the project is finished and will give the community insight to this difficult situation but still is only a fraction of the stories of our county’s 1600+ homeless people and services our community provides. John Lucas of the Modesto Peace/Life Center, Leng Nou as interviewer and Frank Ploof connected many interesting people to interview. Eric Caine, who has collected an amazing set of powerful stills, joined us as our still photographer and narrator.

The Ill List is one of our favorite events each year. Not only do we get an amazing line up of national caliber slam poets, the Ill List team makes an amazing sponsor commercial. This year, they are doing something new called the Chill List. The Chill List will feature four of the best poetry slam *teams* in the country competing for a $2000 prize. Poetry slam teams are comprised of the top-ranked poets in a particular city who have competed and won their respective slams. As a team, poets choose to compete in pairs or as a full ensemble of up to five voices through four rounds of performance poetry. So imagine what you’ve seen at the ILL LIST and multiply that by 2, 3, 4 or 5 poets on stage performing at once! Do not miss this. PERFORMANCE A Time to Perform in July By Kaye Osborn Summer is in full swing. A time to rejuvenate and relax! Swim, bike, read, reconnect and take in a theatrical production or two. I am currently working with two amazing Sign Language interpreters: Connie Ambrosia-Wann and Mark Medina. We will be interpreting YES Company’s Beauty and the Beast on Saturday, July 21st at 3 PM. Please spread the word to the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community. This will be Melanie Wyatt’s last production as she is retiring. She has poured her heart and soul into YES! We are so lucky and blessed that she has given so many young people an opportunity to sparkle and shine on our local stages. Congratulations Melanie! ATTENTION: NEW HOTSPOT ALERT! Whether you’re eating, drinking, and/or socializing, lately, Skewers Restaurant is the hottest place to “Be” and to “Be seen”! If you are a native of Modesto, then you are fully aware that Skewers Restaurant is not new; only the location is. They recently relocated from 9th and J to 821 L Street, and with the move, a new hotspot began. Father-Son duo, Brad Morad and Yonatan Moradkhan knew exactly what they were doing when they opened Skewers Restaurant, specializing in Mediterranean cuisine, back in 2003. Six months later, they hired manager, Kristen O’Brien and this year, she became a partner alongside Brad and his father. Together, the three of them, are a force to be reckoned with! To get a full understanding of exactly my meaning when I referred to Skewers as the latest “Hotspot” here in Modesto, first and foremost, you must understand the restaurants overall appeal. It is absolutely stunning inside! Brad has a real knack for designing a space and though the majority of the building structure remain, there are a few exceptions. A bar and a wall was removed, opening up a new bar area (where beer and signature drinks are served.) Pennies were strategically placed on the wall, adding to the richness of the decorum. I call the wall, “Pennies from Heaven!” The atmosphere creates a sense of excitement and calm – All at the same time! Typically, the

words “excitement” and “calm” do not naturally align themselves. However, something about Skewers makes you feel both of those energies simultaneously. The ambiance provides a bit of a Los Angeles vibe. In fact, in addition to the intimate lighting and beautiful decorum, there is a section of the restaurant that leads out to a beautiful open patio. Now, let’s talk food! As always, I brought famed Modesto View Magazine photographer, Michael “MJ” Mangano along. We had an appetizer first, but this was no regular appetizer my friends! In my entire life, hands down, I have never tasted a bruschetta so incredible! They take toasted pita bread and cover it with hummus, fresh cilantro, jalapeño, and roasted vegetables. Then, they top it off with feta cheese. It is exquisite! As I nibbled, I sat in my seat, sinking into an imaginary, edible paradise. As if the bruschetta weren’t enough, next, a sample of dolma arrived at the table. Just as everything else is homemade in Skewers, the dolma is no different, and they roll it themselves. Dolma, (in case you’re not familiar), is a stuffed grape leaf, made with herbs and spices, then filled with ground beef. A large variety of skewered Mediterranean meals and shish kabobs are cooked over an open flame at Skewers. A shish kabob favorite is the Lula Kabob. This is a traditional Persian kabob is made with Angus Sirloin. Unsure about what to try? Inquire about the Skew Sampler. For your mouth-watering pleasure, it consists of three different types of skewers. The sampler includes

teriyaki beef, saffron chicken breast, and tiger prawns, covered in homemade lemon butter garlic sauce. Most of the dishes are served with long grain, basmati rice. The rice is fluffy and light and ours had the added attraction of red barberries. The red barberries presented such a brightness to the plate, that I almost mistook them for ruby-red sapphires. Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 4:00 PM -7:00 PM. You can have drinks, feast on $3 appetizers, or try some homemade yogurt. Do not leave Skewers without having dessert! Ask about the crème brûlée, baklava, or simply cool off with a refreshing bowl of Pomegranate Ice Cream with dark chocolate chips. I couldn’t leave Skewers without asking both Brad and Kristen, “Beatles or Stones?” With a chuckle, Brad replied, “The Beatles because of the song “Imagine,” but honestly, if I had to choose something on my own, I would pick The Monkeys!” Kristen chose The Beatles as well, but her response was a little different, “I choose The Beatles because from the beginning up until their latest album – each were different.” Brad, Yonatan, and Kristen are happily serving Modesto with humility, hospitality, grace, and most importantly: Delicious food! I asked, “What do you think is the real secret as to why Skewers has lasted so long?” Without a beat, and in a sincerely heartfelt way, Kristen replied, “Well, Modesto is a very special place, and we are completely honored being a part of it. Our involvement with community events, including donations, are how we try to give back. We really care about our city and we hope it shows.” It does! As always: Let’s love our Modesto! Coors Light Stage County fairs are some of America’s great traditions. Movies with Elvis have been made about State and County Fairs and these are some of the gatherings that bring us all together. Fairs have long been a place to showcase the local agriculture and in our area, the 4H and the animals are a big showpiece. July Movies Loud Indian dance music and acoustic groups don’t mesh very well. I learned this the hard way on an April afternoon a few years ago, when I hosted a segment of MUMfest on a coffeehouse patio. Little did we know that an Indian cultural group had rented the park across the street for a big party. The music started blaring at us through speakers right around the time we were supposed to start. One of the more interesting days of my curating career…and also the last time I put together an outdoor showcase. Intimate listening rooms are better anyway. But that little snafu did get me wondering whether Indian and Celtic/Appalachian styles could be fused together. My friend Liesel Roy Haldane has her own answer to the question. She’s visited the area twice in the past few weeks, to share her unique twist on traditional folk music. Liesel breathes fresh life into the Irish classic ‘She Moves Through The Fair,’ adding an Eastern twang with her customized Indian sitar. It’s one of the most beautiful-looking instruments I’ve ever seen. You might also hear a banjo rendition of Nirvana, or a sitar cover of a gorgeous Joni Mitchell

song. Liesel will return to town this month as the featured artist for something new Modesto Unplugged is trying out. It’s a world music jam session at the Barkin’ Dog Grill. We’re looking for percussionists, players of exotic instruments and vocalists who sing in various pretty languages for this open invitation. If you have a friend who fits any of those bills, please let them know what’s happening. We’re hoping to get a great assortment of ethnic music styles

to mix and meld together in new ways. Wednesday July 11 from 7-9pm. Meanwhile, longtime area presenter John Griswold and his Red Tie Arts group have a hot ticket coming to Lucca Winery up in Ripon as part of their summer series. Saturday July 7 at 8pm, get groovy with Native Vibe, a duo brought together by a series of unusual coincidences and a love of African and jazz music. It’s high-energy, eclectic instrumental music that blends Latin, African, Caribbean, funk, rock and jazz styles. Get more of the scoop on this evening at www.red-tie.org. Finally, with all the fun going on at our county fair this month, Modesto Unplugged’s top music pick is Trace Adkins on Monday the 16th, on the mainstage starting at 8:30. Formed by Adam Armstrong, LiLana Cajias, Josh Clarke and Brent Terry, the band is a collaboration of MAMA Award-winning band members from Better Left Unsaid, Painting Chaos and Clockwork Hero. Just think guitar rock of the 70’s with a new feel to a classic sound and you have an idea of what they bring to the table. The band is working with Adam Ruppel of ProView Studios and will be releasing their first single in late July. Quick Picnics

It had been too long since we had a picnic, so we headed over to the Chopping Block to load the ole picnic basket with goodness. American By Chris Murphy From the blues, rockabilly, to chrome, steel and environmental lubricants, Eli is the classic renaissance man. Born and raised here in Modesto, Eli went to Davis High and earned a degree from San Francisco State. Eli lives life surrounded by his wife Jaci and their kids, classic cars, station wagons and the most beautiful vintage guitars and his own custom cars. To this amazing list, we now add amplifier development expert with his acquisition of the TwoRock Amplifier company. ModestoView: You just may be one of the most versatile people I have met. Chopping cars, working with designer oil & chemicals, blues guitar virtuoso, amplifier maker, parent and so much more. How do you prioritize all of the things in your life? Eli Lester: I’m very fortunate that I’m passionate about so many things that I do, so none if it ever really seems like ”work”. But being a husband and father while running 2 businesses and a gigging musician is a constant struggle that I know you can relate to, there just never seems to be enough hours in the day but if you love what you’re doing you always seem to make it work. MV: How did you meet Jaci? EL: Ironically we grew up 5 doors down from each other as kids, we moved away went to school etc. I moved back to Modesto and few months later I walked out of my apartment complex and she was my next door neighbor. If she tells the story, I was stalking her, I’m going to take the 5th on that one. But we’ve been married for 15 years now so I guess it worked. MV: What were the things that fascinated you growing up? EL: My parents were both musicians and I always played and gigged with my father as a young child but as soon as I heard BB King and Stevie Ray Vaughn it was over for me… I was obsessed and it’s been the only constant thing in my life, I’ve always been a blues guy. One day I had saved up enough gig money and bought a 1961 Chrysler and I was hooked with my next big obsession or passion in life. Building hot rods and custom cars just became a passion and what I would do to unwind. I don’t know why cars and guitars go so well together, but it just seems to work.

MV: What characteristic do you hope to pass off to your kids? EL Passion for what they do including living life. I have great kids and the coolest part is they are all so different and have completely different interests and characteristics than I do. I just want them to be good open minded honest people. MV: You have always made really cool amps, how did you have the opportunity to purchase Two Rock Amplifiers? EL: It is a very long story but short of it is: I’ve been a Two-Rock artist since about 2006 and in that time I became great friends will the original founder Bill Krinard. He started using me as someone to play all of the new amps, take them on the road and give him feedback. Eventually I started tweaking and modifying them with him and went down this long tone quest that has lasted for over a decade. The company was sold and was just treading water for a few years. In 2016 myself and longtime friend and Two-Rock general manager Mac Skinner got first right or refusal to buy the company and we took it, we brought back Bill Krinard and have been having an absolute blast. MV: What is it like to be making amps for the best guitarists in the world? EL: It’s awesome! We’ve been building and designing custom amps for guys that have inspired me my whole life. Sitting in the studio with guys like Eric Johnson and Doyle Bramhall II have been great people to get ideas and learn from.

MV: What is something that surprised you in this industry? EL: Like a lot of industries it is a very small community and everyone knows everyone. The world is actually a very small place! MV: What is next for you and Two-Rock. EL: Continue to work on being one of the industry leaders in hand wired, hand built, boutique tube amplifiers. MV: You are also on the founding team of the Plink a new musician networking ap, as am I; what do you hope to accomplish with Plink. EL: To develop a professional platform for musicians to help them work more and make more as well as helping them be found. As a music lover as much as I love playing, I love going to shows, to be able to find exactly who’s playing in any city that you’re in is going to be amazing for both musicians and music lovers. MV: You travel everywhere and what keeps you so connected to Modesto. EL: I love Modesto, I love the community and people’s willingness to join in and be part of the

community. We have a great mix of people with brilliant, passionate and artistic minds here. I have my shop in Santa Rosa but my wife and I have a house here and we love coming home to Modesto, it’s our home. MV: You have been a two-time ModestoView cover subject for our Graffiti Summer issues, what does the spirit of American Graffiti mean to you. EL: Anyone that knows me knows my car issues…. LOL There is nothing better than putting your family in an old vintage hot rod and cruising downtown. Nothing else matters and everything just seems simpler when you’re doing that. It’s hard to explain but you can just have conversations and enjoy the vibe and company. MV: How do you keep everything in check an in balance for your family while having so many interests? EL: That is a very hard issue especially in 2018. The beauty of technology is you can work from home, and be productive sitting in a coffee shop somewhere. The hard part is you always have people, tasks, emails all that beeping in your pocket at all time. Your email is never caught up and there is always another spreadsheet that needs completed. I have to make a very conscious effort to put down the phone and technology when doing family time. I literally have to turn my phone and computer OFF and try to enjoy the moments with them. You’re never caught up and it may take me a couple days to respond to a text but the kids grow up so crazy fast you have to slow down for them. MV: Describe your ideal day in Modesto. EL: Honestly, just having a cup of coffee downtown with my wife and relaxing, eventually having dinner and drinks and hearing some good live music. Very simple but a hard recipe to beat. MV: Beatles or Stones. EL: Love them both and although I’ve seen the Stones a dozen times, I’m a Beatles guy all day long.

Mobility in Mongolia There are parts of the world that don’t necessarily have the resources what we do, but nevertheless, they have the same needs. In many cases, the issue of disability or lack of mobility can mean the difference between life and death. Hope Haven West, based here in Modesto and operated by the amazing “Uncle” Lonny Davis. By day he operates a network of homes for the mentally ill and by night (and day) he operates this global charity that provides mobility i.e. wheelchairs, to underserved parts of the planet. Our local Rotary Clubs have supported this and many of the other missions. I and my daughter Abigail are proud to be part of the team to deliver mobility and wheelchairs to Mongolia. We will be visiting 5 cities and villages from Ulunbaataar to nearly the Russian border. Red Hot Summer Fun is the plan for July. There are so many things to do and July is buzzing with fairs, music, festivals, tomatoes, cocktails, and so much more. You really need to plan things out this month as July will be done before you know it and we will be back to school. So get your shorts, your waterbottle, some good sneakers and let’s get a move on and explore. Of course, this isn’t saying that it is not perfectly acceptable to spend your summer in a hammock, under a tree with a cold drink, but we encourage you to explore.

This month, you need to run early in the mornings and some of the best places to run are the bike trails along Dry Creek and the Virginia Corridor. It is always best to run with a partner for safety and stay hydrated. If you want to have fun and run in a group, connect with the Dusty Bottoms Trail Runners as they have training runs on Tuesday and Thursday Mornings at 7 am on the Virginia Corridor and an evening run that starts and ends at Fuzio Bistro Thursday evenings at 6:30. Check it out! Thanks to the teamwork of Leadership Modesto and the City of Modesto Parks Department, the playground at Graceada Park is back and better than ever. This is Modesto’s park and it is a place for all of us to go spend some time. Remember the more we all go there and be active, the safer and better it will be. Take the kids to play before MoBand and take a sack lunch and just go enjoy the park and the variety of trees. Many of Modesto’s parks have had new equipment installed and there are some new parks on the way. If you are looking for something indoors, Lazer Quest is always a fave and you can check out the Escape Room in downtown Modesto. The LaLoma Neighborhood is working now to put a new playground in East LaLoma Park that will benefit so many in our city. The pool at Graceada Park is open again thanks to the dedication of the Barber family and the teamwork of the City of Modesto. There is also a community pool in Empire that teaches water safety as well as a community pool at the Salvation Army Red Center and splash it up this summer. But please, stay out of the canals and the fast water in the rivers. It doesn’t end well.

Have you ever dreamed about rafting the mighty waters of the Grand Canyon? Well you should start right here in our own backyard. The Stanislaus River has some of the best white water rafting for both the expert and the family level rafters. There are two main areas of rafting, above or below Knights Ferry. The wild river is running pretty good this year and there are some Class I and II to whiteknuckle rapids. There are some mellower trips too and for most, some plain old fun float trips. These are all easy to get to, both to start and to get out of the water. Please make sure that you raft these rivers with an expert. The water may look calm, but it is not. Enjoy the fun and raft to your ability. Here are the local rafting companies that will get you all hooked up, whether you go as a single, couple, family or group, there is something for everyone. At the Modesto Sunrise Rotary, Rotarian Nick Mascitelli was honored by outgoing club President Tom Bryant as a Rotarian of the Year. This was a well deserved honor. I asked my friends Lonny Davis, of Hope Haven West, to say something about Nick. “If I were given the task to pick one Kat in the whole wide world who embodied the spirit of Rotary International (Service Above Self) - hands down that would be Nick Mascitelli. Innumerable humanitarian excursions to barrios and downtrodden villages as an angel of mercy, delivering and fitting hundreds of disabled kids into complex rehab wheelchairs with Hope Haven West. MAMA Looking Out For You By Middagh Goodwin Wow, time flies when you are having fun. So far this year the Modesto Area Music Association has helped to put close to $10,000 into performers pockets with paying gigs. Over the last few years, the MAMAs have been working hard at curating events and networking bands with businesses, groups and anyone looking for great live music. Ultimately our goal is to help make the local music scene(all genres)stronger and more vital. That being said what the MAMAs are best known for is a big party in October celebrating and recognizing the local artists, venues and promoters. Help us out by letting the MAMA board know who you think deserves to be nominated this year. Who are the standouts, who are still going strong after all these years? By Earl Matthews Hello everyone, I hope you are feeling fine and ready for a great July. It’s been an amazing year so far and I for one am ready to keep this blues train rolling. Starting things off is a band originally formed by the legendary Mike Bloomfield, The Electric Flag will be at Moe’s Alley on the 1st. This show will feature Nick Gravenites from Big Brother and the Holding Company and Tower Of Power. Or you could Check out harmonica superstar Curtis Salgado at the Powerhouse Pub in Folsom. One of the hardest working blues men in or area Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood is doing a weekend residency at the Iron Door Saloon up in Grooveland on the 6th and 7th. Jeramy has one of the tightest trios in the whole valley and is a showman of the highest order. Great excuse for a weekend in the mountains or a fun stopover on your way to Yosemite. One of my all time favorite live bands is coming to the Powerhouse Pub on the 8th. Cafe R&B is fronted by a women so full of fire and raw sexappeal that I can only compair her to none other than Tina Turner. If you have the chance to see them, take it. On the 14th you have a wonderful opportunity to support Sol Riddem over at Church Key in Modesto for their CD Release party. I’m going and

it would be awesome to see some friends. Another fav of mine is coming back to town, all the way from New Orleans. Todd Day Waits is playing at Ralston’s Goat on the 15th. Todd Mixes Old School Blues, Country and Americana music with a shockingly authentic delivery. I will be there for sure. On the 20th you can catch Modesto’s own R&B crooner Rob Hill Band at Ralston’s Goat. Rob calls his music Jazzy Blue but I call it heartfelt and full of soul. I will be hosting my monthly Blues Jam at St. Stan’s on Wednesday the 25th. You should consider checking out both of the Thursday Jams too. David Dow at Barking Dog and Jeramy Norris at Garlic Brothers in Stockton. Both are great and welcome all comers. I am really excited to be heading back up to Moke Hill on the 29th with Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame for their summer concert series. Come hang out in the shade and by the pool for come cool blues. To of the greatest Blues performers of all time are back on the road and heading to Mountain Winery in Saratoga on the 31st. The Grammy winning duo Taj Mahal and Keb Mo’ are keeping this partnership up for yet another tour. I have heard nothing but glowing reviews about their live shows together. If you luv music you’re gonna love this. And the summer rolls on and it’s time to go to summer camp, Coop Camp Sierra is a destination I have gone to since I was 12 years old every year. First girl friend, carving initials into trees, square dancing and staying up till the morning bell rang to go till breakfast, and yes a long nap. Now my children go and repeat the process. Coming back to the Motown downtown the next Blue Monday will feature an amazing singer Cliff Payne, who has sang eve-

rything from Jazz, R & B, Motown, ballads and theatre pieces. Shelly Streeter one of my fave vocalists with the Sensation’s vocal group came down last Blue Monday and said “Cliff Payne is coming down…I think you will like him.” Cliff was invited up to the jam session and launched into Stevie Wonder’s tune Signed Sealed Delivered and sang it every bit as good as Stevie would of done. There is nothing as exciting as a full band with horn section with a lead vocalist fronting the band. Come on down Monday July

WALK OF FAME

Modesto USA is famous around the world as the Home of American Graffiti and the Home of George Lucas. We celebrate this history during Graffiti Summer and all year long. The Modesto Historic Cruise route is where it all happened. This is a 25 marker walking tour on the legendary 10th and 11th Streets celebrating the people, places and things that created the Graffiti spirit. In 10th St Plaza, there is a Walk of Fame celebrating the people and the car clubs that were the inspiration of the American Graffiti story. These folks are the real deal. We celebrated the induction of the 2018 Walk Of Fame Legends on June 6. Hundreds of fans were on hand to see the new

Walk of Fame sidewalk markers unveiled, that were crafted and donated by Mat Rogers and the team at Flying Turtle Concrete and sponsored by ModestoView and Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group. This year, we were pleased to present the honors to Don Wood, the Grand Marshal of the N Modesto Kiwanis American Graffiti Festival Cruise Parade. In addition to his cruising years, Don has played a major role in the creating the event and car shows that have become part of our local culture. Allen Grant was a racer that inspired a young George Lucas. Allen was one of the fastest drivers around, raced Shelby Cobras and even won Monza, the first

Top: The Ecurie Awol Racing Club, Peggy McCoy and Mayor Brandvold, the Mark Farriester family, Chris Murphy & Allen Grant, Margie and Don Wood, Paul Corgiat American car and driver to do so. It is said that Allen was the inspiration for the character John Milner in the movie. Allen is still driving fast today and brought his race team crew to the induction ceremony. The Ecurie Awol Racing club was inducted in the 2018 class. These were the kids who raced foreign cars, such as the Fiat that Lucas raced, the AC Bristols that Allen Grant raced, and the Porsches and the Ferraris. Many of the original E Curies attended the event and it was one of the first reunions since the early 90s. Paul Corgiat was one of those kids in highschool that loved to race and all of the other general hot-rodding that happened in the 50s and 60s. Paul was behind many of the famous pranks and played a key role in the cruising culture. His son Steve is carrying on the tradition too. Some of our inductees have passed on, and it was still very special to recognize their important contributions to our Graffiti cruising legacy. Jack McCoy was one of the fastest drivers ever from our region and was a top winning racer for a couple of decades with his McCoy Tire cars. He also had a racing team that set land speed records in the Spirit of Modesto with fellow cruise legends Don Monaco and the late Chuck Billington. Jack’s wife Peggy accepted the award on behalf of here late husband. Roy Farriester ran the wrecking yard that most all of the Modesto car enthusiasts shopped at and we was at the center of the cruise experience for years. Besides working with all the car guys, he was an enthusiast

himself and passed the love of classic cars on to his son Mark and his family, who accepted the award on behalf of his late father. The ceremony was a festive event, emceed by Cruise Route Founder Chris Murphy, surrounded by the inductees classic cars and the Mid Valley Chevy Club Park and Shine event. Each inductee received a ceremonial award plaque and letters of recognition from the City of Modesto, Senator Galgiani, Congressman Denham, Senator Anthony Canella, and the Modesto Chamber of Commerce. Third Party Band rocked the crowd into the evening with a light show by Laser Voodoo. Special thanks go out to Jack Hunt and the City of Modesto Street crew for the installation. The Legends of the Cruise committee is chaired by Pete Hischier and Dennis Wilson. FIT Fitness Don’ts by Efren Martinez

We all strive to be as healthy as we can; we eat right and are always looking to challenge ourselves daily with smarter workout plans to maintain or make us stronger. But at what extreme is too much? Quite often I see many of my friends pushing themselves with some unsafe workout body building exercises. In my opinion, one of the most popular and unsafe workouts would be bench pressing. Personally I’m not too excited about laying on my back and pushing up some kind of extreme weight over my chest only to risk injury or even death of it falling on me. Friends some of us find this hard to remember and despite what some think, we as humans are very delicate. Sure you could have someone spot you, but I personally won’t spot anyone because the risks are too dangerous and I wouldn’t want to be part of someone getting hurt on my error. Instead find a weight

bench that’s stationed to the ground so if you drop the weight, it falls & hits the ground instead of your chest. This is just one of many unsafe don’ts in fitness. It’s summer so run through a sprinkler, let a Popsicle drip down your arm, go see live comedy. The Big Guy and I have started producing shows and the performers and audiences have been fabulous. Every time the door opens there are smiles and hugs and handshakes—you don’t see that at the movie theater. by Felicia Aleman He was the shell of a man who at one point could’ve cared, but didn’t, because he was a shell, and shells can’t care. That’s not one of their abilities. He was handsome by the standards of both shells and narrators. His presence was enough to pause the narration for wistful wondering. If I were to put my ear to his chest would I hear the vastness of the sea, or the beating of a heart yearning to be loved? Have I been taking this whole shell thing too far? Are readers beginning to think there is an actual shell involved? None of this mattered. Fate would play out as it has through the ages: mountains, seas and buildings rising and falling taking civilizations with them. Today, Fate’s duty would be to bring together the shell of a man and a narrator who are both looking for love and reassurance that the person they both call Aunt Carol was really just an Aunt in title, not an actual relation. Being as this is a family paper, Aunt Carol was a woman who was a close friend to both of their families and not blood-related so it wasn’t a creepy meetup, but it was definitely awkward.

The person with big dreams is more powerful than one with all the facts. ” –Albert Einstein Not only does Modesto’s Max Raymond have a dream, but he also has the facts! At the age of four, Max had an encounter that changed his life forever. Dressed up in a firefighter costume, he stood at the corner of his street and meticulously watched his neighborhood firefighters put out a small fire. Once extinguished, they parked the engine next to him and gave him a hat to complete his outfit. He was in awe. Since this experience, Max has dedicated his life to learning about firefighting and pursuing it as a career! He has memorized 32 station tones, toured stations all over the West Coast, and planned his school course to lead him to being a firefighter. He began taking photos of fire engines, the stations he visited, and even the firefighters on the job. At the age of twelve he created the Instagram page @code3_emergency, which now has almost 4,000 followers!! Until now, nobody except his family knew that it was a fourteen year old running the high quality

Instagram has given him a platform to share his love of firefighting with people all over the world. Max and his family expressed to me that Stanislaus County firefighters they’ve talked to have been touched by his passion and met him with even more information and excitement. Many have told Max that ‘they were the same way [growing up]’ and can’t wait to have him on the force. The Raymond family is thankful that the firefighters keep our community safe and continue to inspire people with their bravery and kindness. Max has an abundance of family support for his passion. His parents illustrated to me “It’s his dream, the whole family supports it 110%, even if that means waking up at 10PM to drive him to see nearby firefighters on duty or touring 35 stations in four days”. I think this family’s story is extremely important because it shows that wholeheartedly supporting your child’s

interests, and putting in the extra effort, can lead to them finding their source of happiness and can give clarity about future careers. After meeting Max, I have promised myself to truly dedicate myself to my interests, as he has. Have a beautiful, safe July & be sure to thank our firefighters when you see them!

ZEN Identity by Mary Layton Who am I? This is the time old question we all wonder about without necessarily being completely sure how to answer it. A while ago I came across an interesting article written by German woman director and producer Doris Doerrie which I’d like to share with you. She gave some convincing explanations of why we have a hard time knowing our identity. We go through so many changes throughout our lives and this changes our identity. So, for example, you may look at an old photo of yourself and you may say, hey, that’s me, but at the same time you feel that it’s not you anymore. I think that’s a good thing that our identity is in flux, we can reinvent ourselves. In that way who we think we are is pure fiction, something we make up

in our mind. We believe that there is something about us that defines us and makes us unique. Ask a Japanese Zen monk - he will tell you that you are talking about the Ego and that in his language that word doesn’t even exist! Now it gets confusing. How then can I get a clear idea of my identity? What is it anyway? Where does it begin, or end? Is it my skin, hair, eye-color, blood group or language or culture that defines me? A Zen teacher would tell you that the true self is not the superficial ego that each person has now, but the original face he or she had before they were born and molded by experience. People who meditate or do meditative exercises on a regular basis do it, amongst other reasons to get away from the clutter of the mind in order to access this original identity, or essence. One learns to let go off ideas about oneself, like what we are supposed to be. Another great trapping in the search for our identity is the mirror. The German director recounts how she found the absence of mirrors in the Japanese monastery very interesting. When she didn’t see herself in the mirror for a few weeks she noticed that she was beginning to give up the picture she had of herself. What a great season we have had so far with Music in the Plaza so many fantastic performances and still 3 more months to go, every Friday 7-9 pm. July kicks off in conjunction with First Friday Street Faire with music performed by Third Party Band performing songs 7PM- 9PM • 10th Street Plaza FRIDAYS - Downtown Modesto from the 50,60, 70 and beyond. July 6th July 13th we have the ever popular Third Party Band Highway 99 brings a little big band July 13th Highway 99 to Downtown with everything from July 20th R&B, Disco, really anything with Funky Tim & the Merlots horns. July 20th we see Funky Tim July 27th & the Merlots returning last year Blue Line they had the crowd in the palm of their hands. Ending the month with some blazing country and cool ballads is Blue Line playing Music in the Plaza for the first time but we hope will not be their last. Remember if you want a good spot on the patio at Fuzio’s or Ralston’s Goat make sure to come out a little early or just bring your lawn chairs and grab a spot in front of the stage.

Summer means it’s time for camp… and Modesto Sound has a Recording Arts Music Camp that is awesome! It is held right on the stage in the Foster Theatre at Try a Cab - It’s getting easier to catch a cab, both to Gallo Center for the Arts. Ages 8-18 get downtown and home from downtown.
