This month is all about celebrations. We celebrate the birth of our nation, we celebrate the success of Graffiti Summer and how we are now enjoying Graffiti Summer all year long with our new sister company ModestoGraffitiUSA. com Our family got to celebrate the wedding of our oldest daughter Madison to a great guy Ryan. We celebrate our very own civic pride called Modestocana. Yes this is who we are, we are a community of friends that care about each other, we are a community that welcomes new people and visitors to our community and are a city that celebrates our history to celebrate our future. We have really creative movers and shakers and people that are really leaning in to make a difference. We have a unique city in that a few people can really make a difference and build teams that are interested in helping I live in a house of full of powerful creative women. They are leaders, they are strong and they are creative and they represent to me so much of what is wonderful for our future. I am so very proud of what my girls have done and am so very proud of the women of our ViewCrew and the women in our local music community. Something wonderful is happening with the Northern California Women’s Music Festival. The big event is coming on October 23 & 24, but in the months leading up there are fabulous fundraisers and music events showcasing the amazing and talented women in our community. Do not miss this and please lend and hand, with your time, money and word of mouth.
Arts enrich our lives. Culture is a huge economy. Our cuisine is special. ModestoUSA has a big advantage and we need to make sure that the Arts, Culture and our Cuisine all work together to attract visitors to our city. People came from all over the world last month to attend Graffiti Summer events. We need to make the transition to have people visit Modesto for Graffiti history all year long with events, museums, mural tours, concerts, car shows and more. Music events draw people to our city all year long. The Gallo Center and the State draw from all over and people come to Modesto for our restaurants and our agri-tourism. This is how we GROW revenue and CREATE jobs and opportunity. These things are not just for fun, but it is part of what creates ModestoCana. Yes ModestoUSA, ModestoCana should be served daily and thanks to you our readers, our local business that advertise in ModestoView and our amazing ViewCrew, we are making this happen. We want you to be a part of it and thanks for being here. Please email me if you want to get involved with this and we will connect you to the right place. chrism@modestoview.com This month we celebrate our nations’ birth and we can all be there together on the 4th of
July. I am so honored to be the announcer for the 141st Annual 4th of July parade. Please join me in downtown Modesto at 9:30 am on the 4th. Take the challenge to enjoy the summer heat and still get out and explore our community. Try our drive ins, go to the shows, eat on our patios and most of all, invite someone that doesn’t get out much to go do things with you and tell them about how cool our city can be even when it is hot. Thanks to you for being a loyal reader. Don’t forget to check out our amazing event calendar at the end of this magazine and at www. modestoview.com before you leave the house so you don’t miss anything. Have a fabulous 4th Chris Murphy Founder and Publisher of ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

Congrats to Madison & Ryan June was a milestone for us. Becky and I celebrated our 30th Anniversary and our oldest daughter Madison married a great guy named Ryan Leupp. We are so lucky to have added a new family member and we wish them all the happiness in their marriage and future life. FAMOUS Casino Babies, Tupac, Fred Flintstone and Equality by Ruben J. Porras I did it again. I had this whole column written and now that first copy sits in the virtual trashcan on my iMac desktop. I hear that this is what happens with columnists - Life comes and goes and the urge to write something as current as possible takes over. This is good in the way that I feel more satisfied with my work, but bad in the way that our graphics team hates my lastminute submissions. I restarted this article because when I woke up this morning I was in a whole different America than the one I went to bed in. I woke up in a more tolerant America with a focus on equality and hope. I woke up in an America where anyone can feel free to love and marry whomever they please. I’ll be happier in this America. Ever since my liver transplant, I have struggled to figure out who I am and be happy. I have made a million mistakes and a million apologies and I have come a long way. When I say that I have come a long way, I mean that literally. I have learned more about myself while traveling than I have ever learned while sitting at home or in an office in front of a computer. When I am home, I tend to see the same things over and over again and I begin to feel numb to them. For instance, I see the same people day after day asking for change downtown and while I feel for them, I get to the point that I ignore them. I feel bad when that happens.

A couple of weeks ago in Las Vegas I witnessed a blind man sitting on the ground with his dog and a hat for collecting change at his side. The whole scene broke my heart. It was a million degrees that day and I was tired of maddening crowds and carrying bags. None of that stopped me from quickly finding a vending machine full of ice-cold water. I bought water for that man and gave it to him along with a pocketful of quarters that would have otherwise gone into a slot machine. I would hope someone would do the same for me if I was in his position. Flip to the middle of this issue and you will see some of my favorite road trip destinations all within an hour or so from downtown Modesto. Taking the time to visit these places has taught me that life experiences are far more important than gas money. Without these journeys I would have never experienced some of the amazing moments that have shaped my life. Grab a camera, a bag full of comfortable threads, and whatever change that is living under your couch cushions and glove box and hit the road. Trust me, it’s with the trouble. Traveling Tip: Sit down and make a list of your experiences. It may make no sense to anyone except you, but the memories will embed themselves into your mind better when you relive them for a minute. Be warned though - This list will make you want to up and go again and soon.

ART Working Vacations by Jim Christiansen July is a working vacation month for me. Here are some vacation and staycation ideas for Art View readers. This month Jennifer and I roll out of Modesto, into the heat of the night, and day to enjoy some fireworks, and the Grand Opening of Gallery Red in Las Vegas, where we are both showing art with local artists Pinky Patch, Eric Hawkinson, Rita Barbano, Darlene Day, and Crystal Moreno. Gallery Red is the brainchild of artist Yvette LaForce, and the opening show will also include artists Alexandra Zane, Michael Spezialy, Daniel Gron, Linda Adelstein Watson and Richard Kanter. Photographer Zachary Samm will also have his latest series “Tokyo, Three a.m.” which showed recently in Modesto, in the Opening show. Gallery Red is in the Las Vegas Art District, and the opening is July 4. Modesto View writer Monica Barber tells me Las Vegas’ art district rocks. Artists listed in the opening invitation will be featured artists to show, and sell art for the next year. If you can’t make the heat of July 4 for the opening, but happen to be in Vegas in the next twelve months, drop in on 1237 S. Main Street, Las Vegas, and check it out. For those sticking closer to home, Mistlin Gallery features The Festival of Garden Art Show, mostly florals, as the current show. The change of shows midmonth is the Central California Art Association “Summer Splash” members show. Preservation Coffee, across the street from Mistlin, featured skateboard classics during Art Walk in June. Look them up on the Art Walk map if you don’t already get a great cup of coffee there. Chartreuse Muse has a new art up. Get a map and check out the art walk venues in July. Going a little further afield, check out Second Saturday in Sacramento or Sonora. In Sonora, art and music separate and come together downtown this July 11, on the Y at 670 Fulton. Nadine Barret, an artist who regularly shows her best out of town in Sacramento, All of Them Witches, art by Caldron 13, (billed as 13 artists), 3 musical acts and 1 wicked DJ are to be in attendance. Merced Art Hop is July 18. A lot of art,
not far away. The Boardroom has dipped its valise into art and music. Monica Gunderson has done some art as House Vibes with the music there recently, Sundays 2 to 6. It would be great to see some guerilla pop-up shows take place in Motown. Meanwhile, Turlock is trying to take the lead with Arts Around Town on the Second Thursday of the Month. The Photo Collective is showing at the Carnegie Arts Center. Carnegie announced its Annual Gala will be Saturday, September 12, 2015 from 6-11 p.m. and will serve as the special preview for the exhibition “Alphonse Mucha: The Golden Age of Art Nouveau, selections from the Dhawan Collection.” In honor of Mucha’s art, the gala will be entirely Parisian themed and will feature cocktails and Parisian dinner, live music provided by Hot Club Faux Gitane, can-can girls, with live & silent auctions. Early bird tickets are on sale for $125. The early bird price will be available through August 1st. To purchase tickets please visit Carnegiegala2015. eventbrite.com Artists and photographers plan ahead and look for early registration announcement for the Sixth Annual Stanislaus Artist Open Studio, April 23 and 24, 2016.

BREW
By Brandilyn Brown, Christopher Mitchell, Chris Murphy Those of you long time readers know that the ViewCrew likes great food and the “occasional” cocktail. It is really 5 pm somewhere all the time, and those happy hours just seem to pop up at the perfect moment. We are always on the look out for something really tasty, interesting and most of all invigorating. Since it is summer, we are stepping out on the porches and patios of our local watering holes to hook you up with cool, refreshing and tasty summer treats. So let the sipping begin. July is not only a time to recover from the shenanigans of June’s Graffiti events, but to gear up your mixing skills for your X-fest after party. Lucky for Modestans, our local bars are inventing special drinks in honor of Graffiti Summer. Your trusted BrewView writers took to the streets to sample these concoctions, and share the best with you. Grab some friends and head out for one of these cocktails. The Twisted Pig has the Sloe Cruise, consisting of E&J Brandy, Sloe Gin, ginger beer and lime juice. Rivets American Grill created the Red, White & Rum. Crushed strawberries, blueberries, simple syrup (sweetener), then filled to the rim with rum.
PICK OF THE MONTH
Every month, we’re going to pick one of our favorite Right before serving, add a tablespoon of whipped cream to each Dixie cup. alcoholic recipes for a drink that you can make at home, so that if in the middle of your tomfoolery you find your group without a DD, just stay in and have yourself a night of escapades! Our “of the month” can include beer, cocktails, specialty shots, frozen treats, anything that contains magic juice. Who doesn’t like a nice, refreshing , nom-worthy jello shot in summer?
Orange Cream Jello Shots
You will need: one packet orange jello vanilla vodka Pour 1/2 cup boiling water over the orange gelatin. Let gelatin dissolve completely & mix. Mix in ½ cup to one cup vanilla vodka. Stir. Pour into a dozen or so Dixie cups. Place the filled Dixie cups on a cookie sheet. Put cookie sheet in the refrigerator overnight.

Spritz Aperol
This is a staple of a nice warm Italian afternoon. I was turned on to this at a local sidewalk café in Verona Italy and I was instantly hooked. Aperol is so much easier to drink and slightly sweeter than the popular Campari (which also makes an excellent spritz) I spent the next week trying to find as many different variations of this as I could and landed on this as my #1 summer drink. The instructions are easy. The Spritz in the picture was made by Paul Tremayne at Concetta.
Nice big glass- Use one of the giant cabernet stem glasses for fun Ice in the bottom Pour 1/2 full with Prosecco - We like LaMarca but there are many tasty options Fill to 2/3 with Aperol Top with a splash of soda water Garnish with a slice of orange Drink and repeat when necessary

FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: See Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month Here it is, a hot summer in the valley, each of us looking for a way to beat the heat and still enjoy the best of it all. Of course, we have numerous choices, its Modesto after all; we have plenty of ice cream/ yogurt shops and a long list of cool-dark watering holes for cold beers & cocktails, while we are also incredibly fortunate to have refreshing local produce galore all around us!
Fidel's Fruit Stand (209) 765-0336
! h s e r F
7050 Mc Henry Ave. (cross street Stewart) Modesto Open seasonally from mid-April to Halloween Hours: M-Sat. 9am-6pm, closed Sunday The sun was shining bright as I rolled up on Fidel's Fruit Stand in an orchard setting. I was easily lured in from all those taunting road signs shouting Fresh Plums! Pluots! Peaches and Nectarines (yellow & white)! Fidel and Anabella Ypez took over the 20 acre farm in 2000. In 2003 they acquired 20 more acres and 10 more in 2014 that they lease to other local farmers. Fidel also buys local grown vegetables for resale and customer convenience to nicely stock his place, including the highly acclaimed Brentwood corn. You'll also find local made jams/preserves and a variety of honey that comes from Angel's Camp. I left with a bag full of wholesome goodness that disappeared quickly from the fruit bowl on my kitchen counter! Each bite so juicy and totally Dana~licious!

Loretelli Farms (209) 577-2425 1151 Claratina Ave. Modesto Open seasonally Hours: Mon.-Sat. 8am-7pm, Sunday 8am-5pm Since 1985, Bill Loretelli has been spoiling his customers with an array of fresh produce, preserved goods, nuts, honey, and baked goods that are local and all super fresh! From the street, I never would have imagined all these tasty selections that surrounded me once inside. I saw the biggest lemons I've ever laid eyes on, and was salivating at the fresh baked pies from The Pie Co. of Ripon, with luscious seasonal fruits that I continuously snacked on, while I was imaging my lunch to consist of a sandwich on Genova Bread of Stockton (in business 90 years!) or Portuguese sweet bread from Rose Bakery in Escalon spread with kadota fig jam or perhaps some almond butter, and a veggie loaded salad topped with a local dressing, garnished with those pickles and olives I can't wait to try & say it's Dana~licious!

They market 70+ produce items & grow 45 different types of produce (Basil is my favorite!), including an abundance of specialty produce; Napa cabbage, celery root, leeks, kale, Belgium endive, parsnips & more. Seven types of lettuce; butter, green leaf, red leaf, romaine, endive, escarole, & spring mix. Greens; collard, turnip greens, dandelion, spinach, & yes, more! The herbs are amazing the way they enhance even the simplest dish; rosemary, oregano, mint, arugula, marjoram, baby and crown dill, cilantro and at rattobros.com you will find even more. UNPLUGGED “Jestival” by Aaron Rowan The San Francisco Free Folk Festival went beautifully a couple weekends past. I spent the day in fellowship with many wonderful people in the Bay Area folk music scene; attended a musical saw workshop; enjoyed some Arabic dance music complete with a bevy of belly dancers, a Celtic a capella trio, and even a “Jestival” joke-sharing session. I also had the privilege of curating and emceeing the evening concert on the Woody Guthrie stage, one of the two performance areas. Our local ukulele heroine and recent “Valley’s Got Talent” winner, Alida McKeon, made her bay area debut with her sisters, joining her on harmonies. I also featured Americana/Celtic duo Halfpence & Haypenny (also making their first SF appearance) and returning FFF favorites Dirty Cello, closing the evening out with a high-powered dance set. I am counting the days until next year¹s Free Folk, and hope to bring a few more of our great area performers out to share their music with a whole new audience! The 2014 MAMA Award winners in both the singer-songwriter and Americana categories each have a wonderful gig going on this month. On July 4th, Patty Castillo Davis takes her country-rock sound to Las Vegas, where she will help christen the new art gallery founded by expat Modestan Yvette LaForce. The Gallery Red grand opening party will feature work by other notable area artists such as Rita Barbano and Jim Christiansen. Then on Thursday 7/9, Merced Americana duo Cottonwood Creek open for 90s country star Mark Chesnutt at the Merced Theatre. Concert starts at 8PM with doors at 7PM. General admission tickets are $29. More info can be found at www.mercedtheatre.org. Saturday 7/11, Celtic-French trio Vishtèn appears at the Twisted Oak Winery concert series in Vallecito (up in Calaveras county, about five minutes northeast of Angels Camp on Highway 4.) They¹ll be performing French Acadian party music complete with three-part harmonies and step dancing. Doors at 7PM, show at 8PM. $25 for advance tickets, and $10 for kids 12 and under - all proceeds from children’s ticket sales will benefit music education in Calaveras County. Tickets and info at www.twistedoak. com. Friday 7/17, Doug Adamz performs at the Great Valley Songwriter Series near downtown.
Check out their Facebook page to learn more about the time & location, etc. Doug is a very versatile and inventive songwriter, composing folk, acoustic blues and more. His hilarious story song “The Authentic Skulls Of Pancho Villa” is not to be missed! Friday 7/24, the “Live In The Cellar” series, co-sponsored by Modesto Unplugged and Modesto View, continues in the cellar beneath Greens Restaurant at 953 10th St. This series highlights a rotating array of genres from world music to bluegrass/old-time to acid jazz - a different musical experience every month. We¹re

still finalizing this month¹s feature as of press time, but mark your calendar and make sure to check our website at www.modestounplugged. com where we¹ll have info on the concert soon.

ARCHITECTURE Experiencing Architecture by Barrett Lipomi, AIA
July Movies
What does it mean to experience architecture? If you were to ask an architect, he or she may talk about scale, proportion, rhythm orientation and texture. Hearing this kind of archi-babble will likely go right over your head. This is because architects and designers are trained to break down and analyze buildings in a very technical and deliberate way. However despite the complexities of design and construction in shaping our built environment, it takes only our natural senses and a bit of awareness to experience the joy of architecture. One of the first things we need to realize is that we spend most of our lives in buildings. This means we are constantly surrounded by architecture. Buildings play a significant role in each of our lives and we often don’t realize or understand it. Take for example where you are sitting now. Even though you are focused on reading this magazine, your physical environment is having a substantial impact on your experience. In our consumer based economy much emphasis is placed on products, trends, and what you see on the surface. Although these are important components of architecture, the true power of design lies beneath the surface. Take the iPhone for example with its slick and minimalist packaging and design. This is very appealing, well executed and has helped Apple sell millions of phones worldwide. However it is the hardware and software
within the phone that truly makes it a brilliant and functional design. The same is true for great architecture and too often we focus our experience on what we see and not what we feel or how it functions. This lack of understanding of architecture and design has led many to make untimely and uneducated decisions about our buildings in Modesto. As a result, we have lost too many great ones and built too many bad ones over the past half century. Good design has no
expiration date and we shouldn’t falsely place one on our buildings. Over the coming months I will write about the many great examples of architecture around the city. I will explore ways in which you can more deeply experience the built environment around you. Having a community that values architecture and good design will help save us from the mistakes of our past and allow us to realize the great potential of Modesto for the future.

A man by the name of Kent Whitt decided to start a band called "Kent Whitt & the Downbeats". Kent is the downbeat man on drums. From what I understand, Kent formed Modesto’s first Rock ‘n Roll group of musicians. Laying down the beats at Modesto High, California Ballroom, weekend gatherings along Hwy 99, as far as our state Capitol in Sacramento, to the middle of California, in the Fresno area. By luck ,"Kent Whitt & the Downbeats" had an amazing adventure traveling the world in the mid 1960's, until the band members enlisted in the war. I met Kent for the first time at the MAMAs in 2013, where he was able to perform once again in front of the young talents in Modesto. Since that night, Kent has started putting the band (Downbeats) back together. He has had the pleasure of playing a few shows with his new fellow musicians with local

INTERVIEW
Victoria Boyington
by Brandilyn Brown
Good music is everywhere in Stanislaus County, but a very special music event is coming October 23 & 24th, 2015 that I want everyone to know about. You’ve heard of Lilith Fair and MUSEfest? Well, so have we. Wouldn’t it be beyond awesome if we had our very own all-female fest here, spotlighting women in music? Are you surprised to learn that we do? The Northern California Women’s Music Festival is gearing up for their second annual festival. Victoria Boyington, founder of the NCWMF, and I talked about the non-profit and the festival over plates of Fuzio firecracker pork fusilli the other day. Thanks for hanging out and sharing youtube videos of St. Vincent with me!
cians such as Lita Ford, Tracy Bonham and Alida McKeon, and we have the hilarious comedienne Cameron Esposito, too. MV: How do you pick musicians to play the fest? VB: We have an old-fashioned listening party! We take all the submissions, the board members listen to all of them and pick the ones we feel are best, and the criteria isn’t who has the nicest recording or artwork, but who has the most creative composition, lyrics and overall style.
MV: NCWMF is a non-profit, 501c3. What is your mission? VB: We give all our profits to charity. After last year’s festival, we were able to give $500 to Women Haven’s Center in Modesto. It not only feels good to give back to our community, but we believe it is an investment in our women and families. We provide grants to women starting a business, our Seed Grants. We also like to send young women to Camp Reel Stories, a camp devoted to empowering girls ages 13-18 and giving them skills to create their own media, to view media thoughtfully and critically and to be leaders in their field. Camp Reel Stories gives connections in the field that will benefit every girl going to it, like the Portland Women’s Film Festival and the Bay Area International Children’s Film Festival. These connections will last them their whole lifetime. Our last grant that we do is the Enrichment Grant, which can be used for any type of enrichment classes to engage women in the community such as art, yoga, music, etc. The check goes straight to the venue or school, and we have 2 age brackets for this grant, 0-18 and 18 and over. MV: Why is Modesto’s music scene, and having a women’s festival here, important to you? VB: There are not many opportunities for female musicians to be who they want to be, and learn the skills to make them better and more adaptable musicians. There are so many female artists who could benefit from knowing how to run sound, not just for their own band, but to cover for others and so they know what makes her/them sound good, and then she can give pointers to whoever is running her sound. Women are usually given the behindthe-scenes jobs by default, like managing or advertising, when she really want to be doing
14
MV: What do you want Modesto, or even California to know about you? VB: We have quite an announcement: we have received the paperwork to change our name to the California Women’s Music Festival. It is very exciting! We will run the same way we do now, but we get to include musicians & artists from all over the state. This is going to be the biggest festival of its kind here, and it’s happening right here in Modesto.
lights and sound. MV: Why did you create NCWMF? VB: To have an avenue to provide those same opportunities Modesto lacks. If we can’t count on venues giving females the opportunity to prove themselves, we need t, so that they can show they can do it, and have a greater opportunity from there. These are useful skills for every female in the industry. They can be self-reliant this way. Also with the types of workshops we do, a sound girl can learn to write songs or poetry, or a songwriter can learn to put her lyrics to music. She learns tangible skills that make her a well-rounded artist.
MV: What can we expect from the festival? VB: We want to invest in females in every way we can: female artists get to come sell their art for free, DIY female vendors and small business owners get to have 10x10 booths to sell their product, and the awesome musicians draw in the crowd for them. Everything is done by women whenever possible, but in some areas that is hard. There are so few professional female soundgirls, and we are also changing that with this festival. We are giving women a chance to be professional and have something as awesome and important as this festival on their resume. This year we have amazing musi-
MV: Who is your favorite artist of all time? VB: Oh, that’s hard. Can I break it down into “dead” and “alive”? Alive: Brandy Carlile, Kate Bush, Wanda Jackson. Dead: Odetta, Janis Joplin, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday. My guilty pleasure band would be Marina and the Diamonds. And St. Vincent! She’s amazing and playing at Outside Lands in August. MV: Beatles or Stones? VB: Beatles! Please help us raise funds for this awesome 2- day festival at one of these events. These funds cover the cost for artist’s areas, rent for the venue, rental equipment, etc. If you are interested in being a sponsor or vendor, please email northerncaliforniawomensmusic@gmail. com. The California Women’s Music Festival can easily turn into the TinderBox festival of the west coast. Let’s make it happen!

Happy Sweet 16 X fest!
Talk about time flying by. Just seems like yesterday that Matt Nathanson, Flying Blind, Blessid Union of Souls were playing in 2000 on J Street for the very first Xclamation Fest. Now, X fest covers over 15 city blocks, 12 stages and over 80 performers, the World’s Largest Outdoor Disco and 15,000 of your best friends. This year you can check out the amazing sounds of Waka Flocka Flame, Tech N9Ne, Tribal Seeds, the fantastic Dancetronauts, and the amazing over the top Tubes. Yes Modesto, Quay Lewd will be performing on one of the big stages that are loaded with a line up from 6 pm until 1:30 am. Also performing are: Andre Nickatina, Baeza, Chingo Bling, Moonshine Bandits, Los Rakas, Sadistik, Fortunate Youth & Nick G. There are bands, DJs, food and drink everywhere you look. There will even be Bushido wrestling fun and you can’t 20 feet without running into some you know and you will meet new friends all evening long. Each stage will be rolling out their full line ups over the next few weeks. One of our favorite stages every year is the Rockabilly Stage. Located right there on J St, this is a favorite each
year with barn burning, paint peeling rockabilly. You won’t want to miss that. Headliners are on each of the main stages and the action starts as soon as the doors open at 5 pm. One of the best ModestoView tips is to get situated at one of the many bars or restaurants located inside of X fest and you will have a great place to hang out. Much of X Fest is cash only, but if you are eating and drinking at one of our local places, you can use your credit card and keep your cash for the fun stuff.
You can get presale tickets for $20. Day of the show it will be $30. We recommend getting Express Entrance Tickets, these are limited and are $30 in advance. Totally worth it. X Fest is 21 and over only www.xfestmodesto.com

Stay Close & Go Far - Take an Adventure Close to Home Turlock
by Ruben J. Porras and Nicole Van Dyke
Columbia is a destination (14 miles away from Jamestown on State Highway 49) for those seeking to experience the “Wild West” in all its glory. A variety of small shops sell everything from handmade candles to handmade candies and a number of saloons and restaurants (staffed by cowboys and ladies in the fancy dress of the era) serve up everything from thick burgers to even thicker milkshakes. This is the place to experience a stagecoach ride and robbery and if you’re lucky, find a nugget or two while panning for gold.
The next time that you head to Turlock, skip all the new retail stores along the highway and head into the heart of the city’s downtown area. Treasure hunters can spend a whole day wandering through countless fun and funky little shops that specialize in everything from shabby chic decor to unusual bits of nostalgia that you won’t find anywhere else. The key to enjoying Turlock’s downtown area is having a sense of adventure. Beautiful outdoor dining spaces such as La Mo are tucked away in what at first may appear to be an alley and you’ll find museums, bookstores, a coin shop called Thoreson Numismatics, and an eclectic assortment of tattoo parlors and specialty clothing shops hidden around every corner.

Newman A trip to Newman is a trip to a different time. When we visited, we found a group of tiny dancers all dressed up and ready for a recital, some very cool old buildings just waiting to be photographed, a nifty little public square area with a sizable stage and most of all - a real sense of diversity and community. Newman’s Westside Theatre is the town’s prime attraction and a great reason to take a drive out to catch a live concert, play or other event. While you are in town, ask a local about upcoming parades and festivals such as the annual Newman Fall Festival which will take place this year from Sunday, August 30 through Monday, September 7.
Knights Ferry Looking for a great spot for a photoshoot? Knights Ferry has you covered and we mean that quite literally. The covered bridge at Knights Ferry is a hotspot for photo buffs and adventurers. You can spend a day among the ruins of old buildings, in the ice-cold water of the Stanislaus River (rafting trips are available) or on one of several hiking trails. When you get hungry or thirsty, head into the town of Knights Ferry and hit up River’s Edge restaurant for great affordable eats that you can enjoy on their patio overlooking the river. Drown a cold beer or strong bourbon shot at Rick’s Saloon where you might bump into a famous songwriter or two and end your day with a cone or a sundae at Knights Ferry Creamery and Sweets.

At Railtown 1897 which is located in the historic town of Jamestown, you can park the family station wagon every Saturday and Sunday, April through October and ride behind a steam or diesel locomotive. Trains depart from the Railtown Depot at 10:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Before or after your ride take the time to explore the onsite museum and store where you can ask about special train tours such as the winter Polar Express tour and the spring Wildflower tour.

Murphys Are you a wine lover? If so, Murphys is the perfect destination for you. Spend your days sipping your way through winery tours at some of California’s most popular wineries including Twisted Oak, Ironstone Vineyards, Villa Valecito Vineyards and Tanner Vineyards. Spend your evenings catching an outdoor concert at Ironstone Vineyards which will host major acts including The Doobie Brothers, The Steve Miller Band and The Band Perry this summer. Theatre fans can experience Murphys’ Creek Theatre’s “Theatre Under The Stars” starting at 8pm Friday and Saturday nights through July 18th. Another popular attraction in Murphys is the beautiful downtown area which offers a long list of gourmet and traditional dining opportunities, art galleries, eclectic shops, park areas and a number of bed and breakfast accommodations that are ideal for honeymoons and other romantic getaways.

State Highway 108 is the perfect route to take for seemingly endless adventure as there are a number of stops along the route that are popular with nature-seeking road trippers. A few of our favorites are Twain Harte, Lyons Dam, Long Barn and Pinecrest.
Coulterville Heading to Yosemite? Make a pit stop in Coulterville where the old west is alive and well only 24 minutes from the south entrance of the park. Plan to spend some time in Coulterville with your camera and capture some forever memories of the historic Hotel Jeffery (which is currently being rebuilt after its fourth fire), hit the trails on a guided John Muir Trail walking tour, explore the town’s famous cemetery, and grab a meal at a local restaurant. Start your tour of Coulterville at the John Muir Geotourism Center at 5001 Main Street. They have all the information that you will need to make your journey safe and fun. A great time to head to Coulterville this year is September 26th when the annual Coyote Festival takes place. A car show, old-fashioned parade, craft fair and even a coyote howl contest make for a banjo strummin’, knee slappin’ good time suitable for families. Insider’s Tip: The Cakewalk Heirloom Baking company promises to serve the best cappuccino this side of Europe and you can enjoy it with a decadent cupcake that you might just dream about later. Warning: Coulterville has been featured on a number of television shows focused on the paranormal. Check the Hotel Jeffery website for ghost stories and consider packing your ghost-hunting gear just to be safe. Who you gonna call?

At the Micke Grove Zoo, rescued birds are housed close to Lemurs, tree-swinging monkeys (including the extremely rare New World Monkey), Bobcats, Snow Leopards, reptiles and rodents. Altogether over 130 animals from over 50 different species call Mickey Grove Zoo home. For a little extra adventure the zoo hosts special “Zoo After Dark” events which combine features of camping including toasting s’mores over a crackling campfire and sipping cocoa during story time under a sky lit with sparkling stars with nighttime zoo tours where the zoos spookiest animals come to life. The next “Zoo After Dark” events will be held on July 18th and August 15th.

Twain Harte is a quaint community nestled among tall pine trees that is the home to a miniature golf course that is ideal for date nights and family fun, a fantastic restaurant called The Rock that is open late for travelers and a number of interesting shops. Insider’s Tip: Find the Blossom Caffe just across the street from The Rock restaurant. This cool little cafe serves up a mean mocha and creamy hot cocoa and hosts live music on Saturday evenings during the summer. The Cafe also serves up free wi-fi access which is very handy in an area riddled with weak signals. From Twain Hart as you head toward Long Barn you will see a sign for Lyons Dam. Lyons Dam is a popular stop for hikers looking to conquer its 10-mile old rail-grade trail and is also a hotspot for photographers who can walk out onto the dam and catch incredible panoramic views. When the dam gates are open the mist is so refreshing and calming that you will want to stay longer than you had planned. Watch the sky over the dam for majestic eagles, and the water for jumping fish that glisten and sparkle when touched by the rays of the sun.

Pinecrest Lake is unique in that it remains full of water in the summer in spite of the drought. The lake is surrounded by campsites, hiking trails, cabins, and is also close to a tackle shop, cafe and a restaurant that includes a bar. Insider’s Tip: Pinecrest Lake is stocked weekly with fat Rainbow Trout that are terrific sliced down the middle, stuffed with a bit of butter and bacon and spiced with salt and pepper. Is that Freedom Rock? Then turn it UP! It is July and we are celebrating our Independence as a country with BBQ and music. If you like music, arts and fun (like we do at ModestoView), then you are living in the right place. So much is always going on, and you never have to look far to find it. (Just take a look at the calendar in the back pages of the View.) On July 18th one of my favorite bands (local or otherwise) from the 80's Broken Toys is performing at the Gallo Center for the Arts. This will be their 30th Anniversary Concert, highlighting the release of "A Cut of Memory" 25th Anniversary Concert DVD/CD. They will be joined by Willie Hines (Jet Red/The Lights), Keith Boggs (Strayheart/Collective Hands), and Eric Westphal (James Blonde Band/Dirk Hamilton Band) who will each be performing 2 of their own originals backed by Broken Toys. Also joining the band for this special event will be14 student musicians from Gregori High School. Dan Bryan has been working hard on arrangements a few songs to be performed with the band, and I expect it to be absolutely amazing. Dave Gresalfi who has been tirelessly working on the DVD has put together some fantastic visuals for the show that will take things to another level. Tickets are available at Modesto Convention & Visitors Bureau, Music Box/Music Go Round in Stockton and online through PayPal (wireandwoodltd@gmail.com) for $20 each. This just might be the show of the season, and maybe even the year. On July 10th you can celebrate Stev Rehn bassist of Broken Toys and Michael "Fro" Frowein’s birthday by catching their new band When We Become Kings (featuring Tommy McClendon
of UFO) at the Fat Cat. Joining them will be Willie Hines and Jet Red (PTFH). This will be a warm-up for their 25th Anniversary show at X-Fest. You can expect some hard rocking going on this night for sure. I have been getting back up to Stockton and on July 17th I am co promoting a show with Get Off the Couch presents at Rebels Whiskeyhouse. The show will be a benefit for the San Joaquin's Women Center and feature Red Devil Lie, the Screaming Bloody Marys, and a very special performance by Shadow of Angels. Jimmie Menezes (2013 MAMA Comedy Winner) and I are also bringing the laughs to the Blackwater Republic with the Brew Ha Ha the 4th Saturday of every month. Like both venues on Facebook, and keep an eye out for what is going on just a few miles up the road from us. July 25th at the legendary 924 Gilman in Berkeley, two former Metal MAMA Winners will be tearing things up. Zombie Death Stench (2012)
and Nothing But Losers (2011) will be joined by Central Valley favorite California Medication and a few bay area thrashers. Rumor has it that ZDS will have their brand new album available at this show. If you like the hard stuff and love supporting your local scene, do not miss this show. Show area venues that our bands have a draw, and need to be invited back again and again. Speaking of the 80's, the Thomas Downey High School 30 Year Reunion will be taking place on August 8th at Urbanos. If you are or know an alumni, please reserve your spot for this monumental occasion by donating at the GoFundMe page http://www. gofundme.com/rndx94. MAMA Records is working on a compilation the winners of the past. If you are a past MAMA winner we want you to be included. Send CD quality (FLAC files) songs to mamarecords209@gmail.com. Hello friends, it’s been a few months since I have written a column. Life has been busy, and I have been holding on tight to the rails. I am happy to be writing again, and I hope you find time to attend some of the great events happening all around you this summer. Let’s get things started with one of my heroes coming through California: Mr. John Mayall is going to be playing at Moe’s Ally in Santa Cruz on July 8th, and on the 9th he will be at the Ace of Spades in Sacramento. He is a legend in the history of British Blues. He has played with Eric Claption and Jimmy Page just to name a couple. On July 22nd we will be celebrating the Return of Melissa Ruth and the Likely Stories to Modesto with a show at Deva Cafe. This will be Melissa's 3rd time coming to play Modesto and this time she will have her entire band, including her husband Johnny, who was the bandleader of my first band from 2001 to 2006. Melissa is honestly one of the most talented people I know. She plays a gaggle of different instruments, she writes beautiful songs, and
can sing like an angel with one broken wing, tugging at your heart strings like no other I have heard. I will be there too with the Cryin’ Shame, as will our friend Patty Davis. This will be a special night of friends sharing the stage and making sweet music. On July 24-25th it is time again for the Blues and Bones festival at the Calaveras County fairgrounds. This year's line up is a real “who’s who” of up and coming California blues acts. I can tell you from personal experience that each of these bands are legit as I have at one time or another shared the stage with each of them. From Merced, Mike Hammer and the Nails. From Sacramento, Val Star and the Blues
Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame will be playing a couple of local shows in July:

AUTHOR "Jackals" by Ken White
"I'll shoot," Floyd cried, as he pointed the bow and arrow at Kevin's heart. Tears streamed down Floyd's pink cheeks, flushed white. He always looked like that when he was angry and he was very angry now, as he straddled the wooden fence of his backyard, trying to protect his domain from the pack of neighborhood kids with nothing better to do on this Saturday morning than pick on the weird kid. They were like jackals, bobbing and weaving and howling and looking for a weakness; taunting a wounded animal we could bring down and devour. They could smell his fear. They liked it. Kevin's friends jumped up and down, made faces, howled, and threw rocks at Floyd. Taunting and teasing him. Kevin wondered why they did it; wondered why he participated. We were social predators. It was our job to weed out the weak; ostracize those that didn't fit; didn't belong; couldn't cope. We did it as adolescents, as teen-agers, as high-schoolers, as adults. The judging never ended. When Ted's mother came out the back door and yelled for Floyd to stop, we scattered to the wind, high-tailing it down the alley and back to the park where we would isolate our next victim.

JAZZ & BLUES What’s new with Jazz and the Blues News by Eric Benson I’m away on vacation at Family Coop Camp for the week with family and friends, where the pot holes are not only in the roads, but for swimming as well. Plenty of time to mull over the year while sitting under a shady tree with my six-string and a good book. It’s plenty hot and with rationing water, it’s a jump in the swimming hole to cool down. The daily ritual is coffee time around the deck with Peet’s coffee, off for a hike, mid-afternoon nap, happy hour with hors d’oeuvres and cool beverages, and then on to folk dancing in the Rec Hall. I hope your summer is treating you well, and try and come out for some music and the arts in the downtown when you can. Blue Monday Party continues its second Monday tradition with Ultra Lounge Band playing the Barkin’ Dog Grill Monday, July 13th. The special guest is returning Ross McGinnis, virtuoso Caribbean steel drum and percussion-
ist. House band features: Tim Allen on bass and vocals, Johnny Valdes on guitar, Dave Hawks on drums, Jamie Dubberley trombonist and arranger, Andrew Rosenblum on sax and trumpet, Pat Governor and myself on keys. This time around in addition to playing Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, Funk and Rock, we’ll do some of Ross’s Caribbean, Reggae, and Latin arrangements. The invitational Jam Session goes from 7 to 10 PM with best seating through reservations. So come on down and do the Limbo. Call the Barkin’ Dog for reservations. will be announced. Again call for reservations for best seating. Come out for the third Thursday Art Walk in the downtown Modesto area. Dave Dow, Jazz pianist, will host the Jazz Jam session every Thursday night from 7 to 10 PM at the Barkin’ Dog Grill and the Art Walk. The other jam in town is at the Queen Bean on Sunday afternoons; it’s fun whether you want to hang out, jam, or just listen. That’s all I got for the month. Got to get back to camp; the bell rang, and if you get there late, you may not get fed and it’s a warm and heat for you a half an hour drive into town. All the best, Eric Benson, questions give me a jingle (209) 918-7033. Peace out!

Keep the Fun Going by Leia Johnson Hi everyone! I hope the start to your summer was a blast, here are five things that you should do to keep the fun going. 1. On the first night of summer break, my best friends and I all went to see the band "Stop Motion Poetry" at Deva Cafe. That was when we really started appreciating Modesto's groovy music scene. To see Deva's food menu, visit www.dineatdeva.com 2. Queen Bean Coffee House. A cute cozy place with tea, coffee and snacks! Sunday's are open mic so go and enjoy music on their outdoor patio. 3. after the Rockstar Mayhem Festival which was an amazing experience all day!! I saw a lot of new bands including Jungle Rot & Sister Sin from Sweden!! Not to mention Thy art is murder & The mighty White Chapel!! With Headliners SLAYER, King Diamond, Hell Yeah & TDWP this year was a monster Mayhem festival but the most impressive part was the invasion by the 209Metal scene!! Band members from Nothing But Losers, Death Stench, The Meats$&@t’s, Sworn to the Black, Eroszion, Perfect Nightmare, Skin 4 Julia, Etched in Stone, Bavmorda, Van Diemens Band, HATRIOT, and many more all converged on the annual day of heavy metal and the stairs next to the 2nd stage looked like a 209 area metal show as we all congregated in a huge modesto area crowd!! It was a rad day by far and I can’t wait till next year!!
This month, the Metal is Hot in July with Straight Line Stitch, Spades and Blades and more at the Other Place on July 3. Buckstallion returns to Spinnaker’s on July 9. Later in the month on July 18 we have Jo’s Birthday Extravaganza at The Spinnaker Lounge and the Modesto Metal scene will be showcased in Berkeley at 924 Gillman with Zombie Death Stench, Nothing But Losers, California Medication and more. Sounds like a road trip! That’s it for me this month till next time “ Keep one foot in the gutter and one fist in the gold”

FIT Challenge Yourself by Efren Martinez These days you can just about run a race every weekend. Ten years ago, when I picked up running, I used to have to wait months before my next race. Races were few and far between. I remember my first race. It was in September of 2005 at the YMCA. Back then I was much heavier, with only 9 months of gung-ho fitness in me. Training for it took months, and in fact I remember running the course prior with my wife driving ahead of me in her 1966 VW Bug and my dog, Buffy, who never took her eyes off of me through the back window. I was new to running, so it was a safety thing to make sure that if I keeled over, Buffy would let my wife know. Looking back on my training for that race, I can't help but think that it probably wasn't such a good idea to be following my wife in her bug. The exhaust from her Volkswagen just about killed me. Perhaps this is why my little dog watched me so close; she was very smart. Need-
less to say, it worked out very well and I ended up placing 3rd in my age group for that race. Since then, I've just about run every local race numerous times. Within the last year, I have made it a point to re-enlighten my running experience and challenge myself. I've done this by looking for a few other races out of our community. I've made some great friends across our state. When you run a race you've never run before, it's a lot more interesting. For one, you have no idea what your competition looks like, nor do you have any advantage of knowing how the course is. When you are familiar with a course you’re able to calculate how hard you need to push or descend your run per the course. Sure it's an advantage for

racing, but after running the same race multiple times, it loses some of its excitement. This is why I've turned to the hills, or should I say mountains. When you trail race in the mountains you’re continuously surrounded by cool weather and nature’s beauty. Your challenge level goes up 10 fold. The uneven ground and continuous uphill/ downhill trails certainly put a spin on everything. If you’re not acclimated to running at higher altitudes where the air is thinner, your race becomes that much harder. It's a test that will benefit you the next time you race in the city or especially along the coast. On Saturday, July 11th, the Christian Berets are having their annual Mi-Wuk Fun Run and Walk with a 5k
& 1 mile. I invite you to experiment with your fitness self and make a family day of it with the picnic following the race. This run will give you a fitness challenge and conditioning, as well as that feeling of remembrance of why you enjoy running so much. Mi-Wuk Fun Run & Walk Saturday, July 11 8:00am - 1:00pm Christian Berets Camp 24884 Highway 108 Mi-Wukk Village, CA 95346 Proceeds to benefit our friends with special needs. ZEN Friendship To have a friend is a lucky thing. As Charlie
LIVE AND LOCAL MODESTO AND STOCKTON!
Chaplin once said, you can buy a house but not a home, you can buy food but not have an appetite, you can buy a bed but you can't buy sleep, you can buy help but you cannot buy a friend. Rome was not built in a day and neither is friendship, it takes time to develop. Not everyone has the staying power, to patiently listen to a friend and to stand by when the going gets rough. Friends are special people. Being able to trust a person is important and it is the ability to trust that either makes or breaks a friendship. In the I Ching, the book of changes, one of the oldest books in the world, the following is written about friendship : "Extend yourself in genuine friendship and not everyone responds to you in the same manner. There is a limit to friendship and this causes problems. Where
there is distrust, there is alienation. Where there is alienation, there is deceit. Stand by your convictions and remain friendly. Others will see that you mean well and more clearly understand your opinions. In time, the relationship will deepen, earlier problems will be overcome, and friendship will develop." No matter the trials and storms a friendship has undergone there is nothing like the comfort of friendship. To be able to say exactly what is on your mind and know that even if you didn't find all the right words a friend will sift through them, keep what is worth keeping and kindly forget the rest. Friendship for many people is the fuel that keeps them going, making survival easier and life more fun. Friendship gives us a sense of community and belonging. What would we do without our friends? BARGAIN July Around Town Words and Photos
by Monica Barber Oh my lovelies, it’s been way too hot! Are you melting? Although the temperatures are rising, Ms. M has remained a social butterfly and has been making my way around the Modesto area to find new things for you to do. It’s always amazing and appreciated when a little bird whispers a new destination or something to do in my ear. Especially when this lady can pass those deals on to all of you. Here’s what my sources are telling me is fun or a deal, but don’t take my word for it! Check it out! The Fourth of July wouldn’t be the same without the tradition of the parade in Downtown Modesto! Come celebrate the 141st anniversary of an event that has been happening in our city since 1874. The traditional parade route welcomes the area’s finest floats and marching bands in addition to more. After the parade head over to 10th Street plaza for family-friendly games, music, food and more until 3pm. Don’t miss out! More info: http:// www.modestojulyparade.com/ Good news art lovers! There’s a new Artwalk in the neighborhood. For all you Turlock residents and fans of art be sure to head out the July 9th (the 2nd Tuesday of the month) for Art Around Town to check out some fabulous art and more. This is a bimonthly event in the Turlock area that promotes art, culture, and includes free music among featured artists. More info: https://www.facebook.com/ArtAroundTownTurlock There’s nothing despicable about enjoying a movie especially in the middle of the day dur-
ing the week in the hot temperatures. It’s even better if you’re a kid who loves some Minions! The State Theater hosts a sensory friendly film, Despicable Me on July 15th at 3pm. Join parents and children for this free event and mixer that should be fun! More info: http://www.thestate. org/calendar/event/424 If you love music and Tiki parties then you ought to check out the Northern California Women’s Music Festival fundraising concert at Minnie’s on July 17th. The lineup features local favorite Alida McKeon, Razz, Maddy Hudson, Low La La, Rainbow Girls, Athena McIntyre and Nadine the Band. $10 at the door for entry gets you great music and goes towards a fabulous cause. More info: http:// www.northerncaliforniawomensmusicfestival.com/ If you can’t get enough music then close out the month with some Music in the Plaza on July 31st from 7-9pm. This free series has featured some of the area’s best local music. Stop in for a movie, drinks or food at one of the adjoining businesses in Modesto’s 10th Street Plaza while you take in the sounds of the Highway 99 Band. More info call: 209-529-9303.
