The amazing thing, it is still exactly the same way we are doing things now. Our mission from the day we first started this crazy project back in late 1997 installing our webcams up has been to “Serve Civic Pride Daily” Here we are 10 years later, dishing up heaping helpings of Modesto Area Civic Pride. Not only have they created great local Rum, Whiskey and Gin, they have helped create a new industry and economy here in Modesto with the passage of the Type 74 Craft Distillery License that will open the door for hundreds of craft distilleries across the state. This has been a fantastic summer and the rest of the season is amazing. Modesto is so cool in that we all feel like family in so many ways, especially around 4th of July. The neighborhood parties, the BBQs, festivals, fireworks and especially the 142nd Annual Modesto 4th of July Parade presented by the Modesto Kiwanis are special. I am so very honored to be the Grand Marshal of the parade this year and invite you all to come on out. Look for my Sierra Pacific teammates in our new SPWG /ModestoView Pirate Ship. These are fun times. We are at a crossroads Modesto. We have lost X Fest and we have lost the Fat Cat. We are hoping that the new occupants support live music. As the music makers and music fans gathered at Fat Cat on June 24, we all wondered what the future holds. But what we do know is that we have so many talented musicians in

many genres, what we also know is that live music is a very important part of our cultural well being. Live music, performing arts, and the fine arts are a crucial part of economic development. They are an important part of cultural diversity and vibrancy. Bottom line, live music draws creative people, new business, and attracts the young professionals that are critical to our future success. It is not just entertainment, it is a renewable economic generator. So my friends, support the places in town that support live music, make sure our civic officials make live music a priority and raise your voice so that we attract the brightest, the best and the most creative. We are all living local, supporting our local businesses, (like the amazing businesses that advertise here in ModestoView making it possible for you to read this for free) and we are the people that will truly make Modesto USA, A Classic American City. The Fourth of July in Modesto is so very special. It is one of those days where everyone is family and we all are celebrating the USA and our very own special blend of ModestoCana that we serve daily. Downtown will be the place to be on July 4th as the 142nd 4th of July Parade will meaner through downtown in front of 25,000 of your best friends. There are great places to watch the parade along the route that travels down 10th St, to J St, to 11th St to I Street. This is pure fun for the whole family thanks to the very hard work of the Modesto Kiwanis Club and Parade Chairman Jeremiah Williams. It is extra special this year as I have been fortunate to have been the Parade Announcer for the last few years, taking over for the legendary Al Menshew. This year, I am honored to be the Grand Marshal for the 142nd Annual Parade. This is so amazing and I am so very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this Modesto tradition. This is an event that I and my family will never forget and we will treasure every moment. Please come to the parade and then join us in 10th St Plaza for the Modesto Kiwanis 4th of July Festival. This will be a fun day Modesto so I hope to see you there.

COMMUNITY It’s a beautiful day to be a neighbor

By Maryann Spikes In my neighborhood, we talk about a lot of

issues in our Facebook group and on Nextdoor. com, but we also do something about them. Rather than whining that another mailbox was broken into, we petition the postmaster to go back to steel community mailboxes. We bring it up to the MPD Chief, and he agrees to talk to the postal inspector about it. Rather than just complaining about the mess people leave in Orchard Park, we do Love Modesto in it once a year, and take our walks there to help pick up some of the trash. We raise funds for a park bench that should be coming soon. We look forward to seeing the medallions in the bench thanking St. Joseph’s for their generous donation, and featuring the Orchard Park Alliance logo designed by our generous and artistic neighbor, Jesse Werner. We work closely with Modesto Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhoods to help bring this to fruition. Rather than just griping about illegal fireworks,

we request an MPD armadillo that is scheduled to be stationed in the park around July 4, and meet with fire marshal Mike Payton to educate ourselves on how we can help offenders be held accountable to the ordinances City Council recently worked on. Rather than just merely telling each other there was something loud in the usually quiet park, we call it in to the non-emergency number (552-2470) - unless something’s actually on fire. We are ready to show up to a Nextdoor Urgent Alert when necessary. Rather than just moaning and groaning about people using our streets for a racetrack, we request traffic units to patrol and set out flashing speed radars to help slow things down for a while, like grat neighbor, Bryan Crawford. Though we do talk a lot online, we also talk at coffee, or in the park. We’ve participated

We enjoy the MPD Town Halls and Coffee with the Cops. We were there for Standing with You. The good old days when neighbors actually knew each other – these are becoming those days again in Modesto. We can go out and breathe in the fresh air and enjoy life together. We can walk each other through a tutorial of the GoModesto! app when our trees need trimming. It’s the Tenth anniversary of the magazine version of Modesto View, celebrated artfully at the Mod Stop/Peer Recovery Art Project Gallery with a ten-year retrospective show of Modesto View covers July 21 to August 18. It is also Stanislaus County Fair time, and they always have an art display. Current shows up at Mistlin Gallery, include the Can 2 Canvas Spray Can Art Show, the Central California Art Association Summer Splash Show, and the Alternative Techniques Class show. If that’s not enough to get you to peer in the windows, John Wynn’s photographs in the featured spot by the front doors. Its plenty hot during July, so cool off with one of the Summer Splash Paint Along, and enjoy the air conditioning, and for $40 per session food, beverage, painting. The Chartreuse Muse will host its New and Emerging Artists Show July and August. I’m one of the juried in artists. Reception will be held during Art Walk July 21. If you find yourself wanting to escape the heat, head north up the hill to the Bourbon Barrel in Sonora, for a nice cold beverage to cool you down. It has an 1850’s feel, but with modern twists, such as the unisex bathroom which pays homage to “Bonanza”, and the USB ports for charging your cell phones or vapes. The bartenders sport vests and ties, and most of the males have long beards, no doubt to tip their hats to the 49’ers who panned for gold in the area 167 years ago. Doug Kennedy, owner and fellow whiskey fan, met with us to give us a little taste of bourbon heaven. They carry over 180 different kinds of bourbon, so it doesn’t matter if you like traditional, dry, triple-distilled, chipotle or mint: you will find a new favorite here. And that’s our goal every month! To find a new favorite drink to share with you. Brandi’s favorite was the Bird Dog Blackberry, and Chris enjoyed the Do Good Cherrywood best, while we both adored the mixed beverage “Willie’s Tea”, named after, you guessed it, local musician Willie T. Taylor. It’s a delicious, minty-almostgreen-tea beverage. Get it while you can, because it won’t last long! They are planning quite an expansion to hit next Spring. The plans include a wine & beer garden a.k.a “Adult Disneyland” which will delight our taste buds, and a retail store to buy sauces, merchandise, local goodies and more. Another fun fact, their beer tap is ice...literally, ice! Maybe if you ask real nice, and tell ‘em we sent you, they’ll let you touch it. The ten talented actors will dramatize gripping, true stories of six wrongfully convicted survivors of death row in their own words. The play was culled from actual interviews, letters, transcripts, case files and public

records and directed by Jim Johnson. This play is adult content. YES Company will be presenting Les Miserables at the Gallo. This is one of my favorite musicals. YES Company Celebrates 25 Years with Les Misérables

Celebrating its 25th season, YES (Youth Entertainment Stage) Company will perform “Les Misérables” beginning July 22 at the Gallo Center for the Arts. Winner of more than 100 international awards and seen by over 65 million people worldwide, Les Misérables is an epic and uplifting story about the survival of the human spirit. According to YES Founder and Director Melanee Wyatt, this summer’s production will feature one of the most memorable scores of all time and some of the most unforgettable characters to ever grace the stage. Since its inception 25 years ago, YES Company’s priority has remained consistent - to give participants the most professional theatrical experience possible in a safe and nurturing environment. “YES was a safe haven for me as a child, and it quickly became my home away from home,” said YES alumnus Justin Su’esu’e. “When I think about YES, the first word that comes to my mind is ‘family.’ My closest friendships were formed in my summers at YES. Natalie Giannosa, who starred as Mary Poppins in last year’s production, believes that YES Company helped shape her into the person she is today. “I gained confidence in myself as a person and as a performer, and it was through YES Company that I discovered the rewarding feeling of uniting together to bring a story to life,” she said. Got this old song stuck in my head now; who let the dogs out, who, who?!!! No, not those kinds of dogs, but good old fashioned all-American hot dogs. Today it made no difference that I may have to hit the treadmill a couple extra hours after my lunch time with Modesto View’s all ages writer, Leia Johnson. Nice to meet another Johnson! We are not family related & she’s only 15 while I’m just a lot older. But we certainly could relate to each other as we have some cool common threads when we spoke about Modesto and so many wonderful people, places, and things to do here! In the month of July we think about the 4th sparkling celebrations, Graffiti nights, and the nostalgic foods still served fresh daily in our area. Barkin’ Dog is well known for their tasty menu, wine & beer bar. Yes, they do have hot dogs. Long dogs with the casing that snaps when you bite it! Slather it in their chili, top it with cheese & onions, & you have a classic dog. But I wanted to introduce Miss Leia to a couple of updated hot dogs as well. So I studied the menu that had me drooling and creations a plenty came to my mind! Bacon, yep crumbled crisp bacon, bleu cheese chunks, and the perfect drizzle of ranch dressing on this Dana~licious Bacon & Bleu Dog. Woof woof!! This was getting fun! I spied the Philly cheese steak on the menu & the Dana~licious Philly Cheese Dog was born! I called Hannibal over to the table as Leia’s mouth was still working on these cool new flavor firsts! “Both Bomb!!” she managed to say! She said she’d totally order these when she comes back! It was decided that patrons are welcome to order these Dana~licious Dogs or build their own Dog creations from the existing ingredients on the menu for an additional cost to the plain hot dog. I love this! Leia and I agreed the seasoned fries are awesome. In that Modesto Graffiti spirit we also indulged in milkshakes! Not just any milkshakes; I had the banana split in a glass and Leia had the salt caramel, both crazy good! Next time we want to try the Mom’s Apple Pie milkshake! Our service was fabulous as Hannibal’s young son, Itannis, guessing 7-9 yrs. of age was like a pro with refreshing our water glasses & asking how everything was with a bright smile on his face! Knights Ferry Attacked !!!!!

The sounds of cannons, rifles and the screams of the dying were all to present at Knights Ferry’s Civil War Re-Enactment that took place a few months ago. General Paul Vancase, Battalion Commander of Artillery for Confederate States of America, along with Rob Orr of Modesto lead and supported there troops through the battles. WOW, what a day. As you may be aware Knights Ferry was the temporary home of General Ulysses S. Grant in 1852 and again in 1854. He later became President of the United States. Knights Ferry abounds with tremendous history like the 1863 Covered Bridge which is 330 feet long and is the longest Covered Bridge West of the Mississippi River. Next to the Covered Bridge is the 1855 Tulloch Mill powered by water wheels to mill flour. Knights Ferry had floods in 1862 and 1955 along with the great fire of 1895 that almost destroyed the entire town. The people and the town were tough and they reconstructed and

flourished. The building of the Goodwin Dam up stream was a great boost to the economy with a lot of construction workers requiring entertainment, lodging and a jail. The jail is still there. Saloons at the Miller Hall, Williams Place and the General Store kept the miners and construction worker very happy. Lodging was in high demand at the Washington Hotel, Knights Ferry Hotel, and of course the Fisher Hotel that was lost to fire. A very popular place was the Dankin & Mc Llauflin’s Blacksmith Shop in 1853, next was the Butcher Shop from 1852 to 1907. As you may know there

was no refrigeration for perishable foods and meats, so they were purchased daily. The 1852 General Store has a race for its historical title of being the oldest and longest operating store in California with the La Grange’s General Store. Knights Ferry was also one of our original County seats before losing out to Modesto in 1871. Miners needed social programs like the 1871 Fireman’s Muster, 1891 IOOF Lodge, 1985 Community Club House for dances, 1870 Summit Lodge #112 of the Free and Accepted Masons. Knights Ferry had its founding families like Abraham Shell 1856, Lewis Dent 1851, Lewis Vayle 1860, Dr. James Lowe 1869, Issac Dankin 1853, and of course, Dr. William Knight who was a scout with John C. Fremont in 1848. On November 9, 1849, Dr. Knight was shot to death and buried in an unmarked grave. That grave is thought to be in front of the Masonic Lodge Building as he was a Mason. Do not try to find it, because many years ago the grave was paved over to be used for a road, as the local historic folklore has it. As you can see Knights Ferry abounds with great local history. It also has a great restaurant and bar called the Rivers Edge. The owner Chris and Stacy Martin have completed a beautiful remolding of the establishment. The view of the river is great location for lunch or dinner. I like the bar. This is a must see place while your touring historic Knights Ferry You’re only 20 miles from Oakdale on Highway 120 just past Lover’s Leap. Look for Bob Hunters Road House Restaurant and Bar. UNPLUGGED Live music is good for you. A virtuoso pianist once performed in Bulgaria during a massive flu outbreak. Thousands of people in the concert hall, and a great cacophony of coughing and hacking could be heard. But there were certain passages that this piano master played, during which all of the coughing stopped. The captivating beauty of his music overcame their affliction, if but for a short time. Something similar happened to me just last month. I spent the better part of the week leading up to the June ‘Music At The GMC’ concert battling a miserable head-cold, which persisted into the afternoon of the show. But upon my arrival at the venue, I began to notice a curious lack of the symptoms I’d been suffering. I was back to clutching a tissue the next day, but on that glorious evening, the lovely voices of my featured artists Carolina and Lisette (as well as some nice piano accompaniment) proved to be very good medicine indeed. So the next time you’re feeling under the weather, go out and get under the spell of some magnificent musicmakers instead. It just may do your body good. July 8 & 9, our neighbors down in Mariposa

Friday 7/29, I’m thrilled to have the chance to host Famous October, a visiting cello & guitar duo from Switzerland. Cellist/vocalist Sarah Bowman is an acclaimed songwriter and former member of noted cello rock group Rasputina, as well as The Bowmans, her duo with her twin sister Claire. In Famous October, Sarah is joined by Rene Coal Burrell on vocals and guitar. Rene was invited to open for Neil Young, ZZ Top and Amy Winehouse early in his musical career, and went on to become Switzerland’s most recognized voice in country music. REAR Serving Civic Pride Daily by Chris Murphy We rarely look back here at ModestoView as our eyes are on the road ahead and focused on getting you, our wonderful readers the plan for next month. But Ferris Bueller had it right; there is a lot going on, and if you are not careful you will miss it. We have had some epic moments. First of all, ModestoView would not exist with out the amazing team of contributors we have. They are passionate, they are the creators, they are the doers, they are the artists, the musicians, the chefs and the bartenders. This is what makes ModestoView special and why I wake up everyday waiting for the next thing to happen to be created. They are not professional writers or critics, they are writing from the inside, from their hearts and including us as friends. We cooked up the idea to put a webcam up to chronicle the construction of 10th St Place back in 1997. One thing lead to another and we became the key resource for what is happening downtown. Now, here we are in 2016, we are still at it, keeping people in the know about the good things happening in the Greater Modesto Area. In 2006, our online world became a real, hold it in your hands, flip-the-pages “magazine”. Our first cover featured Flying Blind on stage at X Fest. 10 years later, we are reaching more people and have a lot of history and have evolved, but we never wavered from being a positive message beacon, yes we have even been called cheerleaders. We love it, we are always positive about Modesto and we celebrate the good in our people, places and things. We want you to be proud of where you live and we want you to be excited about bringing your friends, business partners and family here. We not only talk about things in our community, we help create them. ModestoView helped create the Modesto Historic Cruise Route, the Walk of Fame, the Graceada Park Playground, the Virginia Corridor, Classic Community Murals, the MAMA Awards and so much more. Our writers put on some of the most amazing shows and festivals. At one time Conventions and Fairs happened in just about every town or county in the United

States. Over time, they became more regional and many have just stopped happening. The trend for Pop Culture Conventions is going the other way. In recent years several “Comic Cons” have popped up all over Northern California and now in the #homeofstarwars we are getting our own. Modesto Con is taking place July 9th and 10th at the Modesto Centre Plaza. You can meet celebrities like Sam J. Jones (Flash Gordon, The Spirit, Ted/Ted2), Doug Jones (Hellboy, Fantastic Four-Silver Surfer, Pan’s Labyrinth), the cast of Supergirl/Unburdened; artist Chris Marrinan (Wonder Woman, Spider Man, Dr Strange), Ethan Beavers (Star Wars/ Indiana Jones), Allen Passalaqua (Batman, JLA, Battlepug), Dez Demise & Dennis Knight (Pronto Comics), local and regional cosplayers with over 100 vendors and artists. There will be a game room and panels happening all day and fan clubs including the 501st, Mandalorian Mercs, Rebel Legion, 1701st Fleet, Whovian Fan Club and more. Sunday is Family Day, with specific panels and guest for kids including McGruff the Crime Dog and members of Modesto Police and Fire Department. MV-Hello Sam, I have to say we have been getting great buzz about you coming to Modesto for the Convention. Thanks for coming out. SJ-My Pleasure.

MV: You are best known for your role in the 1980 version of Flash Gordon. A new generation has been reintroduced to it with your appearances in Ted and Ted II. How is it to have such an iconic role under your belt? SJ-Wonderful, especially with the new age demographic that came on board because of Ted and Ted 2. Now with the fans I’m meeting at my personal appearances, it’s Grandpa, his son and grandson, same with Grandma, daughter and granddaughter. It’s exciting for me because I have two grandchildren with a third due any day now. MV-Congratulations on the addition to the family. You also had the lead role in “The Spirit”. Which is another classic comic strip character. Were you a fan of the genre or did the roles just find you? SJ-The role found me and I loved the character. We shot it as a TV pilot for a series, but it was aired as a TV movie. MV-You have an interesting business outside of acting, Inner Cordon Inc. Can you tell us a little about that and how that came about? SJ-I was a Marine before I was an actor, so at the age of 50 I started working as a Security Professional, running cross border security operation in Mexico. It came about because the movie industry is unpredictable and I always encourage young upcoming artists and actors to have a vocation while pursuing their dreams and visions of grandeur having a second vocation will eliminate the hardship of “Delusions of Grandeur” and keep one living practical while pursuing their legitimate dreams of adding value to themselves and their community in achieving greatness. MV-Are there any new projects we can expect to see you in? There has been rumors of a Flash Gordon reboot? Will we see you in that? SJ-Fox acquired the screenplay rights to Flash Gordon and it has been in development for two years and I’m looking forward to bringing value to this project [when I get the call]. Meanwhile I have a new film out this year, “Enter the Fists” (The Golden Fleece), a UK film crew has been shadowing me for over a year filming a documentary “Life After Flash”, and life is really very good! MV-Thank you Sam for your service for our country and for coming to Modesto. I know a lot of people are excited to meet you, myself included.

Doug Jones Q&A MV-Doug, you are best known for your character roles. People don’t often get to see your face. What have been your favorite characters to become? DJ-That’s like picking a favorite child. Very difficult, as I love them all, but the usual suspects that are among the characters I’ve most connected with are Billy Butcherson from HOCUS POCUS, The Silver Surfer, The Faun from PAN’S LABYRINTH, and my dear Abe Sapien from the HELLBOY movies. I also loved playing the kind alien Cochise on FALLING SKIES for 3 seasons. MV-Were you a fan of scary movies growing up? If so, did that influence you the direction of your acting? DJ-Believe it or not, I was a bigger fan of comedies and musicals as a child. But the scary movie moments that left impressions on me would be Boris Karloff staring strait into camera with his haunting eyes in THE MUMMY, Lon Chaney being unmasked for the first time in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, and the Gil Man creature swimming under the unsuspecting Julie Adams in CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. MV-You have a local Modesto connection, back in 2004 you played yourself in Sockbaby which was produced by the local team of Westhavenbrook Productions. Some of that team will be at Modesto-Con. How was it working with them? Any interesting memories from the shoot? DJ-I love all the guys that make up Westhavenbrook. We had such a silly time, just laughing through every day of that shoot on SOCKBABY. Because of that sweet rapport, I told them I’d do anything they ever want me in. So they cashed in on that by putting me in their next web-series, THE DANGER ELEMENT as the scenery-chewing villain, Doctor Elymas, all of the above are watchable on YouTube. MV-Over the years you have done roles crossing all the fandoms and many standout roles, Abe Sapien in the Hellboy series, sharing title credit in the second Fantastic Four movie as the Silver Surfer, to one off or smaller roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Batman Returns, M.I.B. more recently Arrow. What do you have in store for us in the near future? DJ-You can see me return to season 3 of THE STRAIN starting August 28th on FX Network as the leader of The Ancients in 3 episodes. I also did two cameos, one human, one non, in OUIJA 2, hitting theaters October 21st. Then on December 9th, you can see me in theaters everywhere as the title character in the scary THE BYE BYE MAN with Carrie-Anne Moss and Faye Dunaway. We don’t have a release date yet, but I also just finished filming a glorious remake of NOSFERATU as the title character, so keep an eye on my social media for updates! MV-In the promo video for Modesto-Con, you said the “Hugs are always free.” It is obvious you enjoy your fans. How is it meeting them? What is the most unusual thing someone has asked you to sign? DJ-I do so love meeting people at conventions. There was a young lady once who asked me to sign her forearm, then came back two hours later having had it tattooed on her flesh permanently! I see anyone who calls themselves a fan of mine as someone who helped me buy my house over all the years of buying or watching my movies or TV shows. So even though conventions charge a little something for autographs, the hugs are always free and heartfelt.

ALL AGES Hey Everyone!

Finally it’s getting to be pool weather, I hope that your first month of summer was as fun as mine! Between Concert in the Park, ice cream runs and all Modesto has to offer, it’s almost impossible to be bored. I was fortunate enough to visit Norway with my family to visit my parent’s former exchange student, Ida, who went to Downey for her junior year! Norway is ranked the 4th happiest country in the world. Knowing this, I looked for characteristics that made their happiness so well known. In Oslo especially, people ride bikes to work and spend as much time outside as possible. We also visited Ida’s family in a much more traditional Norwegian town, Gausdal. My sister and I’s new friends Martine and Oda introduced us to an entire new lifestyle. Norwegian children normally don’t make plans for the summer and instead explore with their friends during their days off. We walked to a river next to the girl’s elementary school to swim in. Sofia and I thought the water was freezing because we are so spoiled by Modesto’s weather. Despite this, Sof and I still talk about how much fun it was. When I got back from Norway, I pledged that I would spend as much time outside

as possible. My dear friend Haley has a VWBug Convertible, so one morning we drove up to Knights Ferry and had a picnic under the trees. Knights Ferry is definitely a must-do this summer, between the perfect picnic grounds, hiking trails, and water rafting, there is genuinely something for every occasion. On top of that, the drive is under an hour AND there are indoor bathrooms. For the latter part of the month I participated in Modesto Performing Art’s Bye-Bye-Birdie! The director Paul Tischer has an authentic directing style, making his shows so enjoyable to be in and to watch. If you didn’t get the chance to see Bye-Bye-Birdie, make sure you catch Oklahoma! next month on August 6th, 7th, 12th, 13th or 14th. All performances are at the Gallo Center for the Arts and the actors range from elementary school to adulthood. This is a program that I would seriously recommend. When auditions roll around next year, I will be sure to let you know. ROCKABILLY The Hooten Hallers Conquering Modesto In 2007, Modesto was introduced to a fire-

storm of two men taking the shallow cove at Minnie’s on McHenry We were unaware that these two men were going to be such a powerhouse; like none other. The promoter for the show didn’t have a place for these two gentle dogs to lie their traveling heads. After witnessing their musical talents and their gracious swagger, I did not hesitate to host them at our adobe. After the show, we caravanned down the road and unloaded the weight of the night by playing drinking games and getting to know each other a lot more. Andy Rehm on drums and vocals, John Randall on vocals and guitar, are two of the kindest humans I have encountered in the musical world. Even the early morning, a brisk one at that, the boys did a little morning acapella, with knee slapping beats, as they went back on the road in the “Gospel Machine”. I must admit I was saddened for their departure. Hoping they return would come quickly. Following their travels back home I could see all the other little seedy joints mesmerized by

their talents as well. by Jennifer Allsup The next journey out west from their home town, Columbia Missouri, they brought a traveling companion Jack Grelle singer/songwriter. Again, we another night of drunken shenanigans. So much to the point where Jack passed out on the swing in the middle of “Circle of Death”. It is like “Kings Cup” just deadlier. Do you remember “Jax on H”? Mitchell Maisette was nice enough to host the show there. Great venue and amazing staff. Sorry it had to go. Actually, that is where I met Christina Davis, Mitchell’s niece. This time around we had the pleasure of hosting for around 10 days; traveling back and fort h to the mountains and the bay enjoying every moment of their explosive talents. Again, it was another sad day to see them go and travel that 99 hwy to their next gig. This brings us now to a hard-driving three piece adding Paul Weber “The Bad Man” on his sizzling harmonica and badass tube talents. It a great pleasure to meet such a gifted musician, playing the harmonica like melting butter, so

smooth. And to hold a tuba and prance around the stage is truly an amazing sight. After a while on tour with John and Andy, Paul decided to stay back from touring and farm with his lady in Missouri. I still keep in contact and he plays locally in the Columbia are. If you’re ever traveling out west Columbia Missouri is a place to visit. But before Paul decided to stay home and farm, the Hooten Hallers added another piece to the mix: Miss Kellie Everett. Now, if you ever get excited about a female artist, she is one to be very excited about. Kellie joined the Hooten Hallers with a complete style that added to the amazing trio already formed. Kellie plays the bass and the baritone sax, which is just as big as she is. But, boy does she play this instrument like it is nothing. I am sure traveling as the only women in the band becomes hard at times. For Kellie, I believe this is a family affair and her big brothers are there to watch over her traveling the open roads from East to West. Even traveling through Europe has to have some extreme excitement. Kellie also has her own band called “Southwest Watson Sweethearts”. This is a duo with her long-time mate Ryan Koening of Pokey La Farge. I hope you become a fan of Andy, John and

Starting things off on the 4th of July is the grand opening party of the Knight’s Ferry Saloon. Rob Hill Band will keep your feet moving and grooving and get you into a festive mood while you celebrate the 240th birthday of our USA. Then on July 7th the Fabulous Thunderbirds with their legendary frontman Kim Wilson will be showing you how it’s really done at Black Oak Casino. With hits like “Tough Enough” and “Wrap It Up” this band will go down in history as one of the best bands to ever come out of Texas. Which is not a small thing. Next on July 22nd in Monterey and on the 24th in Sac, Dr. John and the Night Trippers. Dr John has more hits than a drum set and is still putting out one great album after another. His music is uniquely New Orleans and proud

of it. He is one of my all-time favorite players and singers. Back at Black Oak on July 29th is Tom Rigney and Flambeau. Tom and his band play Zydeco and Roots music all heavily featuring his world renowned fiddle playing. Finishing off the month is the The Blues and Bones festival, back again at the Calaveras County fairgrounds. Friday the 29th will be Mike Hammer and the Nails from Merced and Ben Rice Trio from Portland, OR. Then on Saturday the 30th Via Star and the Blues Rockets from Sacramento, John Clifton Band from Fresno, Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood from Stockton, Chris Cain from the bay area and headlining this year is the guitar master Dennis Jones Band. Let’s not forget that this is a BBQ competition, too. I hope to see you there!

FIT Fitness Vacation Adventures by Efren Martinez Let’s make the summer of 2016 a Gold Rush adventure. Back in 2001, a group of Modesto ultra runners who had participated in adventure races decided to organize similar events in the Modesto area. These ultra runners, Adrian Crane, Yitzhak Gilon, Joanne Grether, Frank Earnest and Brien Crothers, were the original founders of the Gold Rush Adventures company. This is a group of like-minded friends who enjoy outdoor adventures and encouraging others to get outside. This is why they formed and now organize formal events as the company “Gold Rush Adventure Racing”. This outdoor fitness company is family-friendly and like other endurance sports, many participants are older but they try to encourage people of all ages. I asked Adrian, “What are some of the Gold Rush Adventures the company offers?” He replied, “We do a lot of mountain climbing and backpacking but also kayak,

canoe, mountain bike, orienteering/hiking and trail runs. Loss and Transformation

Last month I traveled to Germany to visit my parents. At the end of April, my mother celebrated her 89th birthday with family and her close friends. By that point she had battled Parkinsons for 14 years. Each new year was proof of her strength and courage. My mother was lucky and grateful for the wonderful caregivers in her life. But we all knew that she had come to the end of her life when she decided to complete her life on her own terms by stopping the medications. Friends, family and all her great grandchildren came to visit her that spring. I was on my way as well and arrived just in time. Two days later she passed away peacefully in the arms of her youngest daughter. She had made sure to wait with her departure until she felt the presence of all her 5 children. It was amazing how she held on, waiting for the right moment to leave. I always have dreaded the thought of a parent dying. But to my surprise, I was actually feeling at peace with my mother’s passing. She was finally free of the pain and the suffering. I knew she had had a full life and had enjoyed herself despite her illness. She loved music and the arts. She travelled. She spent lots of time with friends. She was the heart of a big family. Always ready to have a good time. But also

there to offer her help and wisdom to others. Her endurance inspired everyone. In the days leading up to the funeral I found myself in an unfamiliar territory, as if in between two worlds. On one hand there was the loss and separation, on the other hand there was a feeling of spaciousness I didn’t know before. The spaciousness that she had travelled to I somehow felt was opening up for me as well. Most of my life I had tried to please her and tried to justify and defend the choices I had made in my life. This was now over. I felt a profound sense of letting go and letting be. Letting myself be. It is a freedom I’m still exploring. The marvelous thing is that I feel that my mother is closer to me than ever. She’s a part of me. I can now appreciate all she tried to teach me. I sense her strength and guidance. It is not uncommon to feel the presence of a loved one after they die. Our pop culture knows about this. In the Star Wars episode “A New Hope’” when Obi-wan dies he guides Luke in ways he could not in life. And so we continue to hear our parents, hear our loved ones, feel them and are guided by them long after we can be with them physically. All relationships are unique. When someone close passes away we each feel and react differently; we can never presume to apply how we grieve to anyone else’s process. What I write here is strictly my own experience. Add to this 3,000 of your best friends, blankets, and picnic baskets and you have a hall of fame slice of Americana, or Modestocana as we like to say. June and July in Modesto’s Graceada Park bring the sights and sounds of the Modesto Band of Stanislaus County. Yes this is MoBand. It is our band, the sound of our city. We have many fantastic festivals, X Fest, American Graffiti, Lucky Fest, but MoBand is the top of the pops. There is really nothing like it. The blankets are out early, the wine is ready, the picnics are made and the music starts at 8 pm, for six Thursdays. MoBand has been going strong since 1919. Yes, Modesto, we have a national treasure. How many of your friends in other cities have a huge community cultural event like this? I’ll bet not many. Get your calendars out and plan your summer. July is a fun science fiction kind of month. We are celebrating our Captain Modesto Cover, Modesto Comic Convention and we get to party in the streets at the State Theatre to see Rocky Horror Picture Show. So pick your character, dress up, bring your props, memorize the Time Warp and be ready watch the film with your Rocky Horror friends. This is part of the new Cult Classics After Dark Drive-In series. Movie starts at 11 pm on an outdoor screen. Bring lawn chairs and the State will have food, cocktails and fun
