and patriotic in July around here. We have one of history’s longest running 4th of July parades in the Western United States, we have one of the most successful county fairs, the kids are all out of school, people are travelling around and enjoying our community, and this year, there is still snow in the mountains and the waterfalls and rivers are running strong. What a combo meal deal! Speaking of combos, we are all about the Firecrackers. Sure, real firecrackers may be the holiday tradition, but we are talking food here from our friends at Fuzio. These are the ways we really celebrate a grand and glorious 4th of July, with our friends, family and celebrating here in Modesto USA, a truly classic American City. I am especially excited as last year, I was fortunate to be the Grand Marshall of the 143rd Annual 4th of July Parade and celebrated this with my family, and this year, I am back behind the microphone announcing the parade with my mentor, the amazing Al Menshew. My hat is off to the Kiwanis Clubs of Modesto. Last month, they delivered the American Graffiti Car Show and Cruise Parade, and this month they host the Modesto 4th of July Parade and All-American Festival in 10th St Plaza. These people do great work. Traditions are so very cool. We have our family traditions and our city traditions, and these are really something to be proud of. Fairs, festivals and events like Music
in the Plaza and MoBand Concerts in the park are the way we all share a common community spirit. This spirit is truly the essence of what ModestoView is all about. This is how we make the greater Modesto area shine, with our friendship, and our fellowship. So as we go through the month, celebrating the 4th, enjoying the last couple of MoBands, gathering at the Stanislaus County Fair, we end the month with what may be the biggest party ever in Modesto, Porchfest. I am so excited to have my own porch hosting bands in the LaLoma neighborhood for this event and I am so excited to have all of the different Modesto area musicians and neighbors and friends enjoying what we all love the most, our classic community culture. I am diggin’ it the most. This will be one of the greatest months in recent history to explore the area’s rivers, the waterfalls, the lakes, the parks
and check out many of the summer stay-cations that are right here under our nose. We feature a lot of these activities on page 16 with our special Summer Midway Fun feature. This is a fun month. Plan carefully so you get everything in. Don’t forget to download the ModestoView Ap for your phone at the Apple or Android store so you don’t miss anything. So I wish all of you a grand and glorious THANK YOU to all of you that read ModestoView and for the amazing businesses that advertising here, that make it possible for us to deliver this magazine, loaded with civic pride, to all of the people in our community for free. The Fourth of July in Modesto is so very special. It is one of those days where everyone is family and we all are celebrating the USA and our very own special blend of ModestoCana that we serve daily. Downtown Modesto will be the place to be on July 4th as the 143rd 4th of July Parade will meaner through downtown in front of 25,000 of your best friends. There are great places to watch the parade along the route that travels down 10th St, to J St, to 11th St to I Street and the All American 4th of July Festival will be in 10th St Plaza immediately following the parade. This is pure fun for the whole family thanks to the very hard work of the Modesto Kiwanis Club and Parade Chairman Jeremiah Williams. This parade is special for me as I will be the announcer for this legendary parade along with the legendary Al Menshew. Last year, I was honored and fortunate to be the Grand Marshall for this event last year and our family had the best time. Please come to the parade and then at 10th St Plaza for the Modesto Kiwanis 4th of July Festival. This will be a fun day Modesto so I hope to see you there.

ART Art Everywhere! By Jim Christiansen July is that month many of us go on summer holiday. I have a road trip in mind. July 1, I’m at the San Francisco Oyster Festival. July 2, I take family off to the airport. Before I hit the road, plenty of art events around town. Modesto Artist Salon handling some of the red, white and blue art displays and activities for our annual celebration of Independence Day. Modesto’s Celtic and Renaissance Faire takes over Graceada Park July 8, with crafts, vendors, costumes, and artists, Free to the public starting at 10 am. July 7, its First Friday Craft Grab up at TriChromatic Gallery 5 to 10 pm, and the First Friday Market set up around Music on the Plaza 5 to 9 pm. That’s a lot of events in July’s first week. After that I get a break where I might visit Jennifer K Machado and my art at Fenix Restaurant in Lodi on Elm Street. Guaranteed a great dinner or lunch as I visit my painting Live Jazz Revisited over the Bar. Urbano California Bistro hosts a Paint Nite to benefit the Disability Resource Agency for Independent Living, DRAIL. This is an agency deserving of you Support, Their offices on 920 12th Street. Paint Nite will be an artist led opportunity to let your inner artist out, and create your own masterpiece. Must be 21+ to attend.Tickets available www.paintnite.com Last month I was Doubletree Hotel for Art Walk, and didn’t get out to take many photos. I tuned in to Facebook Live feeds from artists at Still Smoking and Tri-Chromatic Gallery, and followed posted photos by new photographer Rachel Beth Photography. Photographer Rachel Beth Jones of Turlock took some great shots of Art Walk at Work. For all the years Art Walk has been a once a month, year around event, it’s amazing how many downtown visitors on a Third Thursday still haven’t

The current Art Walk committee working on that, but some sidewalk signs outside the usual venues might invite more people in to see what our local art scene about. Art Walk this month is July 20. A couple highlights I know in advance, Jordi Camps will be featured artist at Carolyn Huff Photography and Gallery at 13th and K. The Summer Splash members show will be up at Mistlin Gallery. It is summer and the urge to drink lemonade is strong. The warmer the day, the better it tastes, and guess what, lemonade tastes even better when is has some help from our friends at Surla’s and Do Good Distillery California Wheat Bourbon. This combination is a hot weather award-winning champion. This bourbon is amazing. Do Good California Wheat Bourbon is uses only ingredients grown in the Golden State, and is smooth, subtle, and sweet. So many tasty options on this refreshing treat. While you are there, you need to sample the Surla’s bar menu. I can’t ever pass up their amazing Lumpia, or even get a little pizza to hold me over. Since Surla’s opened, it has been a place for taste sensations, and their Sunday brunch is a flat out hall of fame. So when it gets warm, which it appears that it will be every day this July, I recommend stopping by Surla’s for a Bourbon Gold Rush. “Anyone can drink beer, but it takes intelligence to enjoy it.”Stephan Beaumont When you think of Oakdale, you likely think, “The place Hershey used to be.”, “Cows!”, and “Isn’t that where we stop on our way to Sonora?”. All three are correct, but now you can add another thought, “Let’s swing by Last Call Brewery!” Nestled into this quiet little town like an oasis, you’d almost think it was a mirage. (But it’s not!) And who doesn’t want to visit an oasis and drink and an ice cold beer? Served in a refrigerated glass, their beer is sure to cool you off and quench your thirst. They’ve been a favorite watering hole for locals since 2015, and it’s no wonder why. Owner Josh Garcia has been brewing about 8 years and started just like most of us do: with a kit from Barley and Wine, in Modesto. His first batch was a Hefeweizen, an excellent choice! His enthusiasm grew and now he offers some of the best beer in California. Josh chatted with us over a flight of their 7 beers on tap, and we must admit it was hard to choose a favorite. Mitchell liked the 75 Minute Pal Ale, 5.3% ABV, and describes it as refreshingly crisp. Brandi’s fav was the Sexhoppolis IPA, 5.5% ABV, a fruity and lightly sweet IPA without the bitter aftertaste that usually makes her pass right over IPAs. A runner up for both of us is the 108pricot, so make sure to try it, too! Bring your buds out for corn hole, board games or watch some TV. If you’re anything like us two chatterboxes, this is also a great place to make conversation with those around you. It’s especially easy when your starting point for things in common is a great taste in beer! Go from there and make a friend or two. You might recognize them from Central Valley Brewfest. One of our favorite places to hang out in Downtown Modesto is Fuzio. Fuzio has been a part of 10th St Plaza since it opened and Fuzio is the total dependable place with great cocktails, awesome patio and delicious food with offerings for everyone. You feel like you are in the middle of the action, with dual patios, and windows on downtown. I love it. And since this is July and we are celebrating the 4th, a Firecracker is in order. Thomas and Lopes are those kind of owners that are there, watching what happens, serving, cooking, listening and learning about what their guests like. And you know what? Their guest love Firecracker! Yes, this taste lights up the plate and your palate. Over the years, they have expanded their Firecracker offerings beyond the original Firecracker Pork Fusilli to now include Lettuce Wraps, Pork Sliders, Chicken, Steak and now Tacos. Super spicy yummy. Chef Justin Seward teased the ViewCrew with amazing samples. The pork is blended with sautéed onions, the Firecracker marinade is added, boiled and then roasted in the oven for another two hours. This is so delicious.
Firecracker is Fuzios special secret spicy sweet Habanero Pepper sauce that is just the right amount of Fire and the right amount of smooth and sweet. Once you try it, you will be hooked and that’s why there are so any Firecraker options on the menu. The ViewCrew has been a fan of the Firecracker Pork Fusilli for years and new this summer, we tasted the Tacos and loved it. We have been trying to coax the Firecracker recipe from Thomas and his crew, but no way, the only way you will get it is at Fuzio. Just what are these delicious things? While we were begging for a Firecracker dessert and firecracker cocktail, Gina served up her special Firecracker Bloody Mary. WOW! My lips had an awesome little burn after this meal and can’t wait to go back and for some more spicy sweet experiences. Can’t wait to see what they think up next. Raising the Bar for Young Design Talent in Modesto
Born in Ecuador and raised in Modesto, Jordi Camps, Jr. is an exceptionally talented young designer and illustrator. Camps attended Beyer High School and Modesto Junior College (MJC) where he discovered his passion for design. He went on to receive a BFA in Graphic Design from CSU Long Beach and returned to Modesto after graduation in 2013 to be closer to family (his parents own Picasso’s Gourmet Deli on 10th Street). He’s now a Senior Designer at E. & J. Gallo Winery, creating packaging, advertising and 3D displays for Gallo’s Premium brands. His work has received design awards from American Advertising Awards, AIGA, Graphic Design USA, among others. How might we attract, retain and support young local design talent? Supporting more young local designers like Jordi Camps is a necessary ingredient for fostering a vibrant design culture in Modesto. And for the last 17 years, a unique local scholarship has done just that. Camps is one of the young designers who have benefited from the Al Barr Memorial Scholarship that has provided over $30,000 in scholarships to Stanislaus design students since 2000. The scholarship was established in honor of Al Barr, one of the most influential graphic designers in Modesto’s history. Barr opened his studio, Al Barr Design, in 1974 after a 12-year career as an award-winning designer at the Modesto Bee and the Pasadena Star News. His work remains ubiquitous across Modesto today in the form of logos he designed for Centre Plaza, MID, Prime Shine, among many others. He was also an active member in the community, having served on the City of Modesto’s Public Art Committee and as a portfolio advisor to MJC graphic design students. The Al Barr Memorial Scholarship Fund provides an annual grant of up to $3,000 to students from a Stanislaus County high school or MJC who have been accepted into or who are currently enrolled as a graphic design major at an accredited four-year college or university. The 2017-18 Scholarship Committee has just announced awards to five college-bound designers: Morgan den Dulk (Hughson High) who will attend CSU Sacramento; Yoonhee Hong (California High) who will attend San Jose State University; Felix Jara (Pitman High) who will attend San Jose State University; Rachel Macias (California High) who will attend Seattle University; and Vivian Tran (Gregori High) who will attend UC Davis. Awardees are selected through a competitive process by a committee organized through the North Modesto Kiwanis Club where Al Barr was a past president and

active member for almost 30 years. “Al would have been very proud to see a scholarship in his name benefiting many aspiring graphic art students to pursue the career he so loved. ing a college graphic arts major,” says Al’s wife Carol Barr. Al Barr continually raised the bar of design in Modesto. Many of the professional designers in the city today began their careers as his student, mentee and/or employee. As I’m sitting here writing, Metzger is out in the garage playing it loud. Hailz! If you haven’t found out by now, Metzger is Keith Peters Vocals, Will Holgate Guitar, Morgan Gonzales Rhythm, Roger Guajardo Bass and Robert Hernandez Drums. They’ve consistently been practicing once a week despite one member living so far. The other night they literally banged out two originals. They are starting to get a groove and are enthusiastic at each practice. Metzger’s Keith (and my boyfriend of the last four years) is having a benefit show for Parkinson’s disease awareness and raising money for the cost of his surgery and expenses. Within the year he will be having deep brain stimulation surgery, in hopes to rid him of this chronic and progressive disease. Our dear and caring friends are throwing him a benefit, calling it Butcher Fest. Keith has an associate’s degree in culinary arts and prides himself on his ability to cook and goes by the nickname Butcher. A century ago, W. Somerset Maugham wrote ‘The Moon And Sixpence,’ a novel about a man who leaves his family to pursue his dream of becoming an artist. It was the perfect inspiration as I searched for a name for downtown Modesto’s newest live music venue, which has its grand opening this month. Moon & Sixpence Music And Art House is both a listening concert space and an art gallery, located next to El Sol restaurant in the Cooks Marketplace center at 500 9th St. With 50 or so theatre seats and a front lobby area for local art displays, this all-ages venue will be a home for Americana, bluegrass, indie rock, jazz, world music and more. July features eight concerts, each with its own distinct flavor. Our grand opening Saturday 7/8 will have music by the Kaeli Earle Trio, featuring jazz bassist/singer Kaeli Earle visiting from

Friendly Fair Fun Facts

We are truly a Classic American City, but we
are also fortunate that we have a Classic American County Fair. Many fairs across the USA and even in neighboring counties are struggling, but here in Stanislaus County, we have a fair that has been thriving, connecting with the community, breaking records, and winning awards for 106 years. The Stanislaus County Fair is led by two dynamic people that have lived for this fair and used their time and talent to keep this fair vital to our community. Dr. Adrenna Alkhas, Ed.D took the reins of the marketing for the Stan Co Fair in 2009 after a successful marketing gig at Vintage Faire. Under her guidance and vision, our fair took off in the newspaper, magazines, bus benches, social media, and everywhere. Matt Cranford is the CEO of the Fair and has a deep background in event management, previously with the San Mateo County Fair and the State Theatre, and is keeping the fair fresh and interesting. Adrenna is an alum of University of the Pacific and CSU Stanislaus and Matt is an alum from CSU Stanislaus as well. Let’s get to know Adrenna and Matt. (this is a short version for this print edition, the full interview is at www.modestoview.com) ModestoView: What was it about the Stanislaus County Fair that tapped into your creativity? Adrenna Alkhas: Have you ever walked the Fair? There is creativity everywhere. I also don’t have a corporation telling me what to do and how to write. I let my imagination come to life. From our latest #TheFlipSide campaign with the words typed upside on social media and an image of a roller coaster upside down to doing Fear Factor interns where they film themselves doing crazy things at the Fair, or using chatbot on Facebook Messenger for contests and meet n greet contest passes, I am constantly looking at new and innovative ways to market the Fair. MV: Why is it that so many fairs are struggling, yet this fair survives and gets stronger? Matt Cranford: Our community. This fair is one of a few that continues to see an increase in livestock programs and support. Our livestock program, from the kids and their projects (animals, FFA and 4H programs), the dedication of staff and volunteers all to the way our sponsors, continues to hold its own and grow where many areas see a decline. MV: Why is a fair so important to our region? Matt: County fairs are an institution that is the epitome of an Americana Culture. As Graffiti Night is a celebration of cruising and classic

cars, County Fairs are a celebration of agriculture, community interests and livestock. However, we really showcase community interests and hobbies for areas including floral, photography, arts and crafts and more. We are also very important in many other aspects including the ability to be a multi-use facility during the year. This year we worked with Stanislaus County OES and American Red Cross to be a shelter during the flooding during February and March. Our grounds were possible animal shelters in case Stanislaus County needed more resources. Our buildings, when not used for fair or in an emergency situation, are used regularly for those needing larger event spaces for fundraisers, parties and other celebrations. Like the County Fair in July, the Fairgrounds is continually used as a space that creates memories and experiences all in a safe place for our community. MV: Describe some of the challenges that make running a fair difficult? Adrenna: As an administrator, the single hardest part of running the fair is working to provide an element that is interesting and attractive to each demographic of our community. From a marketing standpoint, one of the challenges is that we can’t please everyone. We try very hard to accommodate everyone’s needs and make it a great Fair for all. I also want to make sure we are on top of our game with technology and social media, and I do feel overwhelmed at the magnitude of possibilities and don’t want to stress my staff with too many wild ideas.
MV: What do you most look forward to each year? Matt: What new food items may be created for the fair! From deep fried Twinkies to BBQ’d oysters at fair, there is always something to enjoy eating that you don’t get during the rest of the year. I also enjoy walking the grounds during the evening and seeing the young kids having fun with their parents, it is always very satisfying to see how much they are enjoying a night out at the fair. MV: Is there a tradition that has faded that needs to come back or is the fair where you want it to be today? Adrenna: If you look at our photos from 100 years ago, it is the same photos of parents holding their kids enjoying the Fair. In photos from the 1950’s and 60’s you see the same family dynamics, and now you look at present photos, you again still see families enjoying the fair. My point is, tradition and the family fun will always be part of our Fair from Derby to VFW burgers to rides and livestock animals, but the only thing we must change and keep up with, is technology. We now have the Drone Zone, where families can fly their own drones, or from previous years having the big blue robot guy and the gaming expo. MV: If you had all of the budget you needed, what would you do to make the fair better? Adrenna: You are asking the million-dollar question to a marketing person. As I twiddle
my fingers together, there are various things from a marketing standpoint we could do better. I always want our marketing to be fresh and innovative year after year, and although content marketing is a vital part of marketing, so are visuals. MV: Describe a Hall of Fame Moment you have had at the fair. Adrenna: BIG TIME RUSH. If you were here that day, you will know exactly what I mean. It was 2011 and one of the biggest Nickelodeon boy bands was performing at the fair. Families were camped outside the grounds all night; people waited in line to get seated at 5 p.m.; by the time we opened the gates we were already at capacity. From media calls, escorting media to where they needed to be, to guests who were excited to see the band, and me climbing and jumping a fence to get past the crowds, it was a night I will never forget. MV: If you were a kid again, what you want to see at the fair? Matt: I wish as a kid, I could be part of a group that performs at the fair. We now provide a stage for community dance groups, performers and others to showcase their talents. I wish I had been given that opportunity. Adrenna: Zoltar from the movie Big, so I can make a wish. MV: Our traditional question, Beatles or Stones? Matt: I’ll will probably be disowned by my brother and sister in law for saying this, but I’m definitely going with the Stones. Adrenna: Hands down, Beatles. Looks like I’m not getting disowned.

Behind the scenes of Liberty Valence by Shannon Carmack Mize
This July you can step back to a time when the west was still wild and the law of the land usually rested in a gun holster. The Prospect Theater Project is presenting Jethro Compton’s The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. The play was written in 2014 and is loosely based on the same 1953 short story by Dorothy M. Johnson that the Hollywood movie was. For those who have seen the black and white movie starring Hollywood favorites John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart, don’t expect a revival, the play differs quite a bit. It will be interesting to see a new take on the same story. PTP’s production, which is closing out their season, will star, among others, Joel Morrison, Michael Hewitt and Jim Kocher. It is directed by Jack Souza and narrated by Jordan Sanchez. Sanchez prepared for that role while finishing up his run with Modesto Performing Arts as Noah, the funeral home’s grave digger, in Oliver! If you did not get a chance to see Oliver!, Sanchez was quite convincing as the rough character. Picking the young 11 year old John Sylvester (Oliver) up by his arms, shaking him and then ending up with the enraged orphan on his back pounding on the filthy grave digger with his fists. When asked about
the manhandling, young John/Oliver said, “it doesn’t actually hurt. It’s only acting. I know what’s going to happen so I’m ready.” This is Sanchez’s first time working Prospect Theater, he said, “It’s been quite an experience. Every rehearsal I’m trying to learn as much as I can. I’m not required to stay after my parts are rehearsed but I usually feel like I’ll miss something interesting so I hang back.” Valance is bound to be an entertaining show if an actor working two shows wants to stay even after he is released. This is going to be a crazy July. For the first time in a long time, the summer heat and the summer fun will have big summer water to go along with it. It was just last month that some of the mountain passes cleared, and the rivers and waterfalls are booming. This event will be held at Dutch Hollow Farms July 8th 7:30pm and will include the 2-mile run/obstacle course followed by live music and an outdoor screening of a Star Wars film. The 4th of July is a holiday that Modesto, CA knows how to celebrate! Since 1874, Modesto has held a parade through downtown and this year, the parade, organized by the amazing people in Modesto Kiwanis, will start at 9:30 am to kick off the festivities. From 11 am to 3 pm, following the parade, there will be activities for the kids, live music, food vendors, and craft booths in 10th Street Plaza for the All American Festival! Don’t forget to pick up some sparklers and fireworks to support the local vendors around town such as the high school groups raising money for their orchestra, marching band, clubs, and other good causes! Recently there has been an explosion in Geek Culture, from Movies and TV to Cons popping up all over. There are is at least a dozen Pop Culture Conventions in the 209. Here is a rundown of what is happening this month. • Los Banos Comic Con July 2nd 11am-5pm $5 at the Los Banos Portuguese Hall. This is an old school style expo with lots of vendors a few guests and a great cosplay contest. • Modesto-Con July 8-9th $5 10am-5pm at the Modesto Centre Plaza. They are in their second year and have expanded taking over the entire Center Plaza including the Hotel Ballroom. Expect over a 100 Vendors/Artists, Celebrity Guests including RJ Hardy, Michael Koske, Dennis Knight and Panels and much more. A con highlight the Geek Fashion Show will happen at 6:30pm Saturday Night. Like to Cosplay and Dance? Come out a day early for Club Mod-Con at the Double Tree.

COMMUNITY LaLoma Native Garden Helped by Eagle Scout by Rhonda Allen & Chris Murphy
The LaLoma Native Plant garden is finally a reality and thanks to a huge neighborhood and Love Modesto effort, this once barren lot is now a really cool park with a trail and native California plants. Now, the park has a new bulletin board to showcase what is going on. Thanks to the hard work of Eagle Scout, Jacob Kubik, from Boy Scout Troop 13, a new bulletin board has been installed at the native plant garden. It will be used to post informational materials about the garden, native plants, pollinators, ways the community can get involved, etc. Jacob took on the construction and installation as his Eagle Scout project, working on it for over three months. It will be a valuable asset for the garden. When time came for installin the bulletin board, he got the help of many of the scouts in Troop 13. It took two days of digging posts, cementing braces, shingling the roof, and hanging doors to get the two-sided bulletin board in place.
The neighborhood is grateful for his hard work and well executed craftmanship! This is just an example of the way our community can work together. Voting goes live in August, and the ceremony at the historic State Theatre set for October 10th. Hi folks, I am writing this up on the first day of summer and if this is any indication of things to come it’s going to be a hot one. I’m going to recommend that you drink lots of water and hang out with some cool blues musicians. Some things to keep an eye on this summer. Every Sunday in Moke Hill at the Hotel Leger they are having a Blues BBQ party. There is a different band each week, great food and a huge shaded pool right next to the stage. I will be there with the Cryin’ Shame on the 9th but, check out their FB for who’s playing when. You can check out Rob Hill Band at P. Wexford’s on July 1st. Rob Jazzy Blue sound goes great with any of the couple dozen beers they keep on tap. Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood with be up at the Hotel Leger on the 4th for a night of danceable blues you can use. If you want to cool down, you can head up to Sac on the 7th to check out Lydia Pense and Cold Blood at Swabbies. Lydia has been one of the most recognized voices out of San Francisco since 1969. Her band is going just as strong as ever and is well worth checking out. On the 21st I will be back up at the Torch Club in Sac with the Cryin’ Shame. It’s one of the most fun places to play in my opinion. You can catch the B-4 Dawn Band Feat. Terrie Londee at Yosemite Lanes. They mix Classic Rock, Funk, R&B and Blues. On the 25th you can catch Blues Legend Robert Cray at the Harris Center for the Arts in Folsom. Robert’s voice is so clear, powerful and his guitar playing is incredible. I have been a fan for years; this is one to catch. On the 28th you have a couple of pretty compelling choices. You could head over to Mountain Winery and check out Buddy Guy and Jonny

Lang, or you could head to The Blues and Bones Festival in Calaveras. I’ll Start with Buddy Guy. I have seen Buddy 4 times; he is a showman. He can outplay just about everyone I have ever seen on guitar and has the voice and the stage presence to move the biggest crowds in the world. True Blues Royalty. This year’s Blues and Bones is looking pretty hot as well. Headlined by John Nemeth, who is one of the hottest blues singers I have ever seen. He can sing clear as a bell like an R&B crooner or he can come at you with a growl perfect for some juke joint blues. His harmonica is an extension of his hand and in just one listen you can hear why this man is hot on the heels of stardom. Rounding out the festival this year from San Jose, Maxx Cabello Jr. from Sac the Ben Rice Trio, from Fresno AC Miles from our neck of the woods Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood and The Marc Chauvette Band. Tough Choice but, these are the kind of problems we like. Don’t forget folks this are now three blues jams in our area to check out. Wednesdays at Haven Acres hosted by Jeramy Norris. Thursday at the Barkin Dog hosted by Dave Dow and another one at Garlic Brothers Stockton also organized by Jeramy Norris. Have a great month, and I hope to see you out at a show.

The Stanislaus County Fair will feature a MAMA stage this year where nominees and winners of Modesto Area Music Awards will showcase their eclectic styles. Comfort is an experience of physical and mental ease. From a Zen point of view comfort is largely something perceived in our mind. For example a Buddhist monk will be comfortable sleeping on a hard surface but uncomfortable when sleeping in a soft bed. To be less dependent on comfort makes the monk stronger. Clinging to comfort all the time can be a hindrance to our personal growth and selfdiscovery. Years ago I remember getting very hot and uncomfortable in a T’ai Chi class. My mind began to only focus on my discomfort. I couldn’t concentrate and I certainly did not enjoy the class. I just hoped it would be over soon. When the class finally finished my teacher told us that as a young boy in China he and everyone else worked and practiced in any kind of weather, very cold or very hot. “You just keep doing it” he said. “ Change your mind”. This inspired me and when in the next class I kept my mind from complaining I was really surprised to find that I had indeed gone beyond what I thought I was able to do. And it had not hurt me, to the contrary, it had broken through what I had perceived to be my limit,
my comfort zone and made me feel happy and also physically stronger. I’ve heard it said by many successful people: Sometimes you have to be uncomfortable to be comfortable later. Staying in your comfort zone is keeping yourself in a box. We do this because of fear of failure. But if you never try to break out of your comfort zone you cannot succeed. What is amazing is how dedicated we all are to seeking comfort for ourselves, whether it is mental or physical. Sometimes it seems to get us further away from ourselves. It is hot this time of year and sometimes, the best work out may be right at home. Here is how I turned a room at my house into a place to train. What you’re looking at is not a performing Arts stage, but one of the most important rooms in my home. Behind these curtains is my home gym equipped with every need to help keep the doctor away and keep cool. Not sure how or even why it played out in our society that for some reason we think we need two rooms to eat food in. OK, I get it. The formal dinning room is a nice room to gather for family holidays. But if you grew up like I did, we only used the formal dinning room at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Seriously! Talk about unused valuable space in my mind for the other 363 days of the year. Perhaps I’m not alone, I’m thinking this formal dinning room thing should have died out with the thought of getting dressed for dinner. I mean; when was the last time you got dressed in a button down shirt and tie to have dinner in your home. These days I’m thinking just having the family together at dinner time is more important than what room we eat in. Well’ that’s me and I’ve always been one to think outside of the box. This is why I turned my formal dinning room into a state of the art gym. For me it was an easy decision. I mean everyday I’d go to the
gym, had a hard time finding a parking spot, had to take a number for my fitness machines and spend more time prepping to go to the gym than I wanted to and those runs and outdoor can be tough on this triple digit heat. Heck, by the time I prepped my gear, food and found a parking spot at the gym and the temp gets to 100, I could have already ran 8 miles. With that being said, I am now enjoying the comforts of my own home gym in a room that is used basically everyday verses twice a year when it was a formal dinning room. Make no mistake, being a DJ in fitness and one who takes his health seriously, I spared no expense converting my home gym to a regular studio entertaining exercise calorie disco inferno. On the wall if front of my treadmill, spin bike & elliptical machine I have a 55 inch 3D TV connected to a sound system and Serato DJ software. To keep cool, I have a 74 inch fan and a high powered floor fan I can place in front of any fitness machine. For the visual and for a little bit of fun, I installed 18 black lights, 2 laser lights, a mirror ball with 2 pin spots to help me along with the illusion that I’m traveling through time while in one place. So friends, I save time, stay cool and keep in my fitness groove throughout the summer. Your may not create a space like this, but you get the idea on how you can do it too. Keep your eyes tuned here to your Modesto View Magazine, within the next few months I’ll be sharing more of what kind of workouts I’m doing daily in the comfort of my own home.

I just spent half of June traveling through the beautiful country of Spain with my family. The distance from my hometown really increased my fondness for all of the wonderful things here. Make sure that this summer you don’t miss those exciting Modesto-specific events like Graffiti nights and concert in the park! I spent a good chunk of my travels on an island called Majorca, home to over 4,000 caves. I got the opportunity to venture through a pitchblack cave, half submerged in water, off of the coast of the island. It was an amazing experience and got me thinking, people in Modesto should be able to do this locally too! There are two caverns near Modesto that are rich with California history and lots of family fun! At Mercer Caverns, about a 1.5 hour drive,

The walking distance is about a quarter of a mile and the tour reaches 192 feet underground. This is great family activity, that all can accomplish. There are walking tours, 165 foot rope rappelling and longer adventure trips, all offered at one location. On top of exploring a new cavern, there is also a zip-line and a climbing tower at the site. The parade and celebrating the Fourth is annual event that has been happening in our city for 143 years. By Chris Murphy Summer is here and it is going quickly. If you don’t pay attention, it will all be over and you will have missed it. Modesto’s biggest weekly party continues in July. This is how it goes, a big brass band, a bandshell, a park, with food, drink, wine, and fun sounds like the perfect evening. Add to this 3,000 of your best friends, blankets, and picnic baskets and you have a hall of fame slice of Americana, or Modestocana as we like to say. Yes friends, MoBand season is happening. MoBand has been going strong since 1919 and the 2017 theme is “Havin’ Fun!” Music starts at 8:00 pm Get your blankets out early for these last few concerts. June 29 - Salute the U.S.A. This is one of the coolest events. This is a get together with hundreds of car fans, young and old new and classic. There are imports and domestics and they all meet at on the Historic Cruise Route of 11th and 10th Streets at 8 – 11 am. Sam and Dave’s Market is home base on I St with coffee, donuts and other breakfast treats. Firkin and Ralston’s Goat are open early for this event as well, join in on the fun and enjoy some Cars and Coffee Modesto.
