ter Abigail is engaged to a great guy, Harrison Power. So excited for the addition to our family and so proud that our girls have chosen such wonderful people. It’s an exciting time and let the wedding planning begin. As we come out of Graffiti Summer, remembering the times of the 40s 50s when there was a newfound independence and the early 60s where there was a civic engagement with the ability to speak freely like never before. Independence and freedom. That is what it really means to be an American. I was in China last year and experienced what it was like to live with a filter on what you could learn and know. To have freedom taken away, even temporarily makes you realize how important our open and free society is. Freedom to be what and who you want to be and go where you want to go is what we hold so dear and work hard to protect. We turn to each other to celebrate what makes our community special. You think about it, there is so much that can go wrong in the world, it shows us that the more we strengthen our community, get to know our people, that a solid community becomes the true strength of America. We just need to connect more and celebrate and support all of our people. I am so excited for the 108th Stanislaus County Fair this year. This is a great opportunity to get our community together. My band, Third Party will be there on opening night, rocking the stage with classic hits for you to enjoy and maybe even dance to. There are so many great local musicians and bands that will be rocking the stage at the Fair, at Music in the Plaza on Friday nights, on the patios of our cafes and the stages of our theatres.

Music gets you through any time of year. Later in July, ModestoView is proud to be a sponsor of the Chill List Team Poetry Slam. This is one of those events, along with the Ill List in December that makes Modesto special. Thanks Sam and Ruhi for making this happen. Finally, as we got ready to send this issue to the printer, I was informed that I had been selected by the American Legion Post 74 as “Citizen of the Year”. I can’t begin to tell you how honored I am to receive this and look forward to the event on August 3 and sharing it with my family and friends. I am in awe of the people that have been awarded before me, and the sense of pride, and having this responsibility to be someone that can lead by example is not lost on me. We all really need to be as good as we can, serve others, lift people up, and work hard and give back to make our city a place we want to live in and hope that our children do too. So thank you from the bottom of my heart and I will continue to be a champion for the good in our community. This is an extra special moment for me, as I was nominated by someone that I really have respected and admired for a long time. When I moved back to Modesto in 1996, I told my wife Becky that I really wanted to be a person like Al Menshew. His knowledge of history, interest in what happens, his volunteerism,

friendhips and his pride in his community is something I connected with. Not only did he mentor me as a friend of our family, he later tapped me to take over his role in announcing the 4th of July Parade, one of Modesto’s great traditions. This parade is a very special event for our family and the pride I feel in carrying on Al’s traditions is great. Maybe someday I will learn how to properly pronounce the names of the various Clamper and Shriner royalty titles. Thank you Al, I hope I have made you proud. I hope to see you out at the Modesto 4th of July Parade and out and about at all of the many great things happening this month. Whether indoors or outdoors, there is something for everyone to do this July. I created ModestoView as a place to celebrate the good, promote out local business and showcase the cool things that make our Modesto USA special and I thank you for being part of this. I love our traditions and hope ModestoView can be one of those too. See you out and about and I hope you have a grand and glorious 4th and July. rallies around in April. But how do we make this happen all year long? Love Modesto has launched Love Our Neighbors, with the goal to raise awareness of volunteer opportunities all year long. The organizations are vetted to make sure that they are focused on addressing homelessness, strengthening families and education. Modesto has a special place in all things

4th of July since 1874. For 145 years, Modesto USA has hosted a 4th of July Parade, making it one of the longest running in the western USA. Held on the 4th, the Modesto Fourth Parade brings out thousands of people, all celebrating out independence and freedom. People line the streets, enjoy cocktails on restaurant patios and best of all, the parade of people, companies, animals, scouts, bands, public servants and first responders are the real show. The parade starts at 9:30 am so get there early to get a great spot on 10th, J, 11th and I streets. It is a really fun, festive and patriotic time and I am very honored to be the parade announcer along with my friend DJ Walker of KAT Country 103 and the legendary Al Menshew. This year we will celebrate as Grand Marshal, MoBand, (the Modesto Band of Stanislaus County) for celebrating 100 years of serving our community with music and parade Champion American Legion Post 74. Singing the National Anthem will be American Idol’s Ryan Hammond. Get your spot on the parade route and enjoy this slice of Modestocana. The announcing booth is on the courthouse lawn so we hope to see you there. Look for the ModestoView/SPWG pirate ship!

The fun doesn’t stop after the parade. As soon as the parade passes by, please head to 10th Street Plaza for the All American Festival with food, music and fun until 3 pm. This is a free event for the whole family. There will be a flag raising right after the parade and the awards from the parade float contest will be announced along with food and drink specials from 10th St Plaza businesses. There will be a DJ on the ModestoView Pirate Ship with Laser Voodoo to mix up the music. This is one of Modesto’s best treasures that you can share with thousands of your best friends. Grab your picnic basket, some wine, and a great smile and head to Graceada Park on Wednesday July 3 and Thursday July 11 for the last two concerts of the season. July 3 will be the Fabulous 4th and the season greatest hits formal night will be on the 11th. Music starts at 8 pm. If you want to play in MoBand you need to attend the Monday and Wednesday rehearsals at Mancini Hall on Tuolumne St.

Summer is well under way, and

Modesto and it’s art community heating up, with workshops, shows, and Summer time events. Workshops and classes continue at The Chartreuse Muse, Dragonfly Art for Life, TriChromatic Gallery, some continuing classes that can be accessed before they end this month, check with the galleries. Chartreuse Muse featured artist for the summer is Jonathan Troxler and includes some interesting paintings of Modesto icons in the mix. Tri-Chromatic offers Solo Performance “Saying your Piece” workshop with 9 dates July 7 to September 7, led by Dawn Trook. Sessions start with guided meditations, chakra work, and leads participants into development of performative work that merges storytelling, writing, vocalization and sound, movement, physical theater, objects/props, and images with the object a public performance. More to the course description on their Facebook event page, but if you ever had the interest in performance art and related expressions, this is one to explore, and likely new to Modesto. Dawn Trook is a writer, performer and educator with 25 years’ experience in workshops and producing performance. Friday July 26, Tri-Chromatic will present Activism and Ally-ship: A Talk with Brandon Leake, followed up by a 3 session Artistic Performance Workshop series. Dust Bowl Celebrates 10 Years By Bill Coffey

Bowl brewed their first ten barrels of flagship Hops of Wrath. Fast forward ten years and they are poised to break the 15,000 barrel annual production mark with their 60 barrel brewhouse Growing from a strong local valley presence, the company now distributes from Los Angeles to the Oregon border, Reno, Tahoe, and select areas in Oklahoma and Vermont. I had the pleasure to speak with Brewmaster Don Oliver about the current state of the industry and Dust Bowl’s future plans. MV Everyone is familiar with your flagship. What new products are you currently making? Don: We have over twenty beers. Hazies are big now, so we are producing quite a lot of those. We also released a Lo Cal lager, under 100 calories. MV: Any hints, if you can tell us, about future releases? Don: I can see us doing another West Coast IPA, more Tropical, and more single and double hazies. MV: New projects? Equipment upgrades? Don: We started up our canning line about 2 months ago and our taproom is opening in Monterey. MV: What changes have you seen in the industry since Dust Bowl’s inception? What do you foresee in the future? Don: Hop availability. You know that we bought our first hops from you. It’s a problem again. In the future, I see a lot more hazies and a lot more beer varieties, fewer flagships.

MV: Other than the obvious factor of quality, what are some of the reasons for your continued success? Don: Consistency. We spent a lot of money on our lab. Proper packaging and combining the packaging with our story. MV: Thanks. Great seeing you again. Congratulations. Dust Bowl is a family owned, local business that was started by Brett Tate and later joined by Brett Honore. The imagery and storyline of their products is a homage to Brett Tate’s family’s Depression-era history and John Steinbeck’s novel The Grapes of Wrath. The original location at 200 W Main, Turlock, is open at 11:00 am every day except Monday (Closed). The production facility on 3000 Fulkerth, Turlock is also open at 11:00 am, daily. Both facilities serve pub style food and a variety of quality beers and wines. These locations are both family friendly. The new facility, Dust Bowl Tap Depot in Monterey has 24 taps, including 22 of their award-winning products and food trucks on site. Please support your local brewery and, when in the Monterey area, give their new location a try.

Going out to dinner should be an

experience. You can get “food” anywhere, but when you go out, you should be transported to somewhere else, and enjoy a little escape. I have always believed that restaurants should have a theme. Long time Modesto restaurateur John Ismail and his partner and brother Bobby have really created a space that not only tastes good, but is beautiful too, taking you away from the daily routine, surrounded in cool lighting and best of all, fire. Everywhere you look. Wildfire has been in the works for a while, and the former Uno location has been completely transformed. From the moment you walk in the new entrance to the bar-centric space, the friendly hostess greeting and seating, to the dining experience, Wildfire has it figured out. “Firespaces” are visible in all directions and the seating and dining spaces are comfortable. Owner John Ismail has been in the restaurant business since he was a busboy while attending Sacramento State.

Over the years, he has been involved in 15 restaurants and Wildfire Public House is the culmination of all of these experiences. John is focused on the experience, from the moment you enter, with ambience that takes you away from the outside world, to the friendly services to the focus on using local ingredients like Fiscalini Cheese and Sciabica Olive Oil, Dustbowl Beer and many others. Wildfire is truly a local creation with local flavors. Chef Paco Martinez is at ease in the kitchen preparing the delicious treats. He has had an excellent path here in Modesto, working with Surla’s and Galletto in the past and now has the lead position at Wildfire. His kitchen runs extremely well with Marlene Sandoval managing the kitchen and everything is plated beautifully. Chef Paco told us that it was so exciting to introduce new flavors, adding Asian spices to some traditional entrees and blending some classics and some exciting flavors. This is so helpful as most groups have some that are more adventurous than others so everyone will be happy. The Ahi Tower has an exquisite presentation, and you can eat it layer by layer and one of his specialties are the Lamb Lollipops. Absolutely delicious, tender and a joy to eat and beautiful when presented covered in a Chimichurri pesto. But don’t stop there, they have a roasted Garlic New York Steak and Four Mushroom Tratolle Pasta and a fire roasted Chicken. The pizza line up is strong, offering a Mongolian Pizza in addition to the more traditional with regular, gluten free and cauliflower crusts. One of the key elements of Wildfire is the blend of entry quality appetizers and some fun ones, like Fire Fries that even have Flaming Hot Cheetos on

them all designed to share with a variety of rich tastes with innovative main courses with a presentation that will impress. Don’t miss the desserts as the Panna Cotta is amazing as well as the deep fried brandy caramel Xango Cheesecake. You are going to want to photo your food and there is even a selfie station and social media walls for your own pics. Bar Manager Tanya Thomas has many surprises to offer, from a nice Dustbowl beer sampler to a special flaming cocktail and many other specials. This is good as most of our visits will start and most likely end with some quality time at the bar. Nice looking space with TVs, but casual and comfortable. The staff is on point, well trained and even in the first days, worked really smoothly. At the end of the evening, even your departure is an experience, as flames erupt from key spaces on the outside of the building, keeping your escape to a secret getaway in your mind as you leave. It is an impressive sight, even when you just drive by.

This is a place that despite being brand new, feels very familiar as you escape from the daily grind and find a place with excitement and great tastes. “Since I cannot sing, I paint.” - Georgia O’Keefe. It is considered a sign of good luck for a dragonfly to land on you. I’m not certain of the symbolism when one falls right into your lap, but I did luck out in a major way when I first connected with the Dragonfly Art For Life, downtown Modesto’s newest art gallery. Strolling down J St. during one of the art walk nights last autumn, I wandered into this gallery which had just opened its doors. They had the visuals but wanted to add the sweet sounds; and it was the perfect meeting at the perfect time. Our weekly live music series uses a palette as broad as any artist adding color to canvas here: Celtic harpists, Mexican folk singers, keyboard looping artists. Friday night music runs from 7:30-9:00pm, with a $10 charge for music only or $35 which buys you a paint session while listening. Complimentary wine comes with admission.

From the fun rides on the midway, to the deep fried foods to the farm animals on display to the great live music performances, there is something for everyone. There are people that give back to our

community, and there are people that GIVE back to our community. I have had the honor so serve on many committees and hosted events with Jeremiah Williams. There is one thing you can say for sure about Jeremiah, he knows how to bring out the best in people. He is one of those people, like the legendary Bette Belle Smith, that you just can’t say no to. Why? Because he is passionate about making our community better and he builds people up so that they can deliver their potential. He reaches through as a preacher would, and he is in fact an ordained minister at the Revival Center United Pentecostal church of Modesto so the passion is evident. He gives of his time, his treasure and his talent. Not only does he inspire people in our community and his church, his skill of woodworking through Oak Crafts by Jeremiah, supports many organizations as well as his family. His woodwork is prominently featured in my and many other homes and he is my “go to guy” for so many community related events and ideas. If you have ever had the chance to hear him sing the national anthem, it is awe-inspiring. Jeremiah lives in Modesto with his wife and family, and his children are also involved in our community. He is leading in a positive direction. Let’s get to know Jeremiah Williams. ModestoView: You had a difficult childhood; what are some of the moments that gave you the strength to press on? Jeremiah Williams: What gave me strength was when I had the opportunity To audition to attend Oakland City Vocational Art school in Seventh grade while attending Marcus Foster middle school as well as being in my fourth foster care home at that time. To my delight I was accepted to Renaissance Art school in Oakland which was a K-12 which I had the opportunity to learn and hone my artistry skill of watercolor, pastel, oil painting, sculpture And more while studying the five subjects for 2 1/2 years. Most importantly my name (Jeremiah) means “God will raise “and I am so glad that we he has had his hand on my life and still does. MV: When did you discover your talent for woodwork? JW: While attending Renaissance Art School at such a young age I was fortunate to understand that an artistic ability can be applied to any area such as woodworking. I remember being in one foster home where I was fortunate to build a small pool table a

very nice doghouse And wood repair things around that house. MV: Why is it that you feel the need to support Modesto like you do? JW: I have a motto which says “how can we say we care about people if we don’t care about what people care about”. MV: You are very supportive of law enforcement and first responders, what ways do you think that our community can be more supportive? JW: The way we support and should support law-enforcement and first responders is to put ourselves in their shoes then we can truly understand how challenging and as well as rewarding it is to serve others without reward or respect at times. MV: Family is about strength; how do you motivate your next generation to be involved? JW: The only way we can motivate the next generation is to help them understand that they have to care about something greater than themselves and that is their fellow man.

MV: What are some of the best events you have supported over the years and why? JW: Having been a part of several events in this community like the 4th of July Parade, the Amgen tour of California, the Mini Cart Race, All American Cities competitions , Stanislaus County Fair and many others. The one that stands out the most was something l created a few years ago that ran for 10 years called Celebration of Dads, where we were able to honor at least 350 fathers in the 95351 zip code in Modesto. MV: You are a proud Kiwanian and your efforts to save the Modesto 4th of July Parade and Festival are nothing short of amazing, why should people want to join Kiwanis? JW: Kiwanis is a family. Kiwanis is a collection of people who want to bring qualityof-life to their community. Kiwanis is a network and a catalyst of building relationships to advance the mission “reaching one Child and one Community at a time”.

MV: What advice would you give to some one starting their journey in community involvement? JW: If you say you can never do it you never will, if you say I can do my part, then that piece that will complete the puzzle which probably is a beautiful canvas that the whole world will admire. MV: What do you think the most pressing issue is for our community? JW: Homelessness is a real problem in this Community. It is something we will never truly get a handle on but we should always continue to work on a solution that’s everchanging. So thank you to all of you and Modesto Gospel Mission, Salvation Army, the County/City shelter project and many others for your effort. It’s not in vain. MV: You have an amazing voice, have you ever considered laying down some tracks? JW: I would love to be able to take some time to write songs and sing them however I think that all of the singing shows really set in motion the inspiration and the power of a song that so many now have the opportunity to voice. So people sing ,sing, sing. “Third Party Band rocks” MV: Who in the world living or dead would you most like to meet? JW: “I hope I never meet the man that I should’ve been and I’m hopeful to meet the man I should be”.-JW MV: Describe your perfect day in Modesto? JW: Sitting at the table either at home or at a restaurant with my entire family enjoy one another’s company. MV: What is something about you that people may not know? JW: We adopted a daughter named Iris when she was 13 and I am now the grandfather of her children Isaiah (17) and little Savannah (13) MV: How important is your family to you, who are they and what have they accomplished? JW: I am blessed and thankful for all four of my children. You’ve heard a little bit about Iris the oldest daughter and the grandchildren. I am proud to say that Savannah Maria Williams (32) has a BS in business from Central Washington University and works for Modesto City Schools as an assistant community liaison. Her aspirations are in basketball and as a personal trainer, puts on clinics with nonprofits in the community. I have twin 31 year-old sons. Joshua Jeremiah Williams is a professional model and a personal physical fitness trainer and runs his own moving company “IM-possible moving” company

business and take it to the next level and support his family too. He’s a hard-working, determined compassionate great son. Seven years ago, all three of them started an organization called “Thanks for Giving” delivering necessary items; clothing, hygiene supplies as well as feeding those less fortunate. Nancy Williams is my friend and my wife of 33 years, the mother of our children, who through our ups and our downs still stands strong and she’s the reason why I am able to do what I do for the community. She’s quiet, hard-working, faithful to God and her family, strong, compassionate, honest, and loving. And for that I love you. MV: What is your favorite classic car? JW: 1960 Pontiac Catalina which I was fortunate to restore four years ago after 28 years in storage which belonged to my dear friend, the late former Councilman David Geer. RIP. MV: Beatles or Stones? JW: It all depends on what day it is, however thanks for asking. OK Beatles.

This is a big world and Modesto USA is a Classic American City. Yep that’s what we are, we have the best of both worlds, our small town community feel and the amenities of a big city and as a bonus, we are close to two of the most beautiful places in the world; Yosemite National Park and San Francisco. In fact, you can virtually draw a line from SFO to YOS and MOD is right in the middle. In fact, you can even see Half Dome on a clear day from Modesto. Cool huh? Every person that visits should walk the Modesto Cruise Route, check out the huge Royal Robbins mural on Camp 4 Wine Café, take in a show and enjoy an amazing dinner & cocktail. So let’s celebrate our big outdoors and many of the things that make July in the greater Modesto a really great time.

Stay Cool

It is important to not only look cool, but to actually be physically cool. It is great to get out there and run, ride and play but make sure you stay hydrated. It is funny, but longer sleeves actually keep you cooler.

The Great Outdoors begins at the ocean and goes to the mountains. Nearly every good trip starts or ends in San Francisco, where the smells of sourdough and crab are the same since the Gold Rush and you can still find places that still have character like the Saloon, City Lights, Tonga Room or Alioto’s. This year is a dream date for running the rivers. The Stanislaus River has some of the best white water rafting for both the expert and the family level rafters. There are two main areas of rafting, above or below Knights Ferry. The wild river is really running this year and there are some Class I and II to whiteknuckle rapids. There are some mellower trips too and for most, some plain old fun float trips. These are all easy to get to, both to start and to get out of the water. Please make sure that you raft these rivers with an expert. Even if the water looks calm, it isn’t. Enjoy the fun and raft to your ability. Yosemite is absolutely stunning right now. We had so much fun creating out cover as we are inspired by our amazing location to Yosemite, one of the most beautiful places on THE PLANET. The waterfalls are thumping this summer which is a rarity. The mist trail up to Vernal Falls is wet and the snowmelt is expected to keep going for a while. It’s true that the crowds are tough, but once you are in there are places where it is amazing. Camp 4 is where the worlds greatest climbers like Royal Robbins have made their home as they ascended the granite to the sky. You can feel the history. For those less daring,the 4-Mile trail from Bridalveil Falls to Glacier Point is always a winner and doesn’t require a back-country permit. There is a lottery system to get a permit for Half Dome that you can apply for the day before. But no matter what time of year you go, it is always amazing. Out of protest, I still call the Ahwahnee Hotel the Ahwahnee and it is still Curry Village, and everyone knows what you mean. Having a cocktail on the patio there staring up at Glacier Point and Half Dome is an essential. Get up and get in early, enjoy the park and rent a bike. Poetry slam teams are comprised of the top-ranked poets in a particular city who have competed and won their respective slams. As a team, poets choose to compete in pairs or as a full ensemble of up to five voices through four rounds of performance poetry. 20 Years ago, Chris Murphy and Chris Ricci got together with an idea to put on a local music awards show, similar to the Grammy, the Bammy or even the Sammies, but for bands and musicians from Modesto and the surrounding area. Thus the first annual Modesto Area Music Awards(MAMA for short)was born. The first year took place at Club Maxx at the DoubleTreee with only seven awards with Flying Blind taking it for P3(Power Punk Pop Rock), Built for Hard Rock and X-Fest for Large Event. The award show has grown to include 26 different categories from Latin to Large Event, Bar to Blues. About 20 of the coveted carhop trophies are given away each year with the inclusion of the dashboard mama going to categories of one added a few years back. October 15th the Modesto Area Music Awards will take place at the Historic State Theatre which has been the home for most of the last 19 years except for being held at the Fat Cat 2005, the Gallo in its opening year 2007, and DoubleTree Grand Ballroom in 2011. This year the MAMA will continue to recognize our outstanding musicians, venues

and events and pay tribute to those who have helped build the local music community for the last 20 plus years. There will be some very special guest presenters and performances from past winners. For those who are unable to attend, you can watch the event streaming live on modestoview.com. Voting will go live Mid-August until Midnight October 13th. We encourage everyone to check out all the nominees, see the performers live, check out the venues, bars, restaurants and cafes. Erik Anderson Transition Project Erik Andersen was a regular local performer in the mid 2000s, winning a MAMA and I even did a duet with him with the Modesto Symphony. After a 10year hiatus, he is back with the Transitions Project. This is a really fun listen, nice album collection with really nice production and some cool stereo fades. The song that jumps out to me is Wake Up, that’s a quick hard driving song with elements of Plimsouls in it.There are some quiet touching songs like Said and Done and then a taste of full throttle punk with Born to Live and Ride. When Independence Day is upon us, I cannot help but think about the origins of our Patriotic music. It’s a bit supernatural how Roots music is all linked together by a thread of beautiful, diverse, cultural melodies from immigrant contributions. Sacred spiritual melodies have lent some of the richest ingredients to music history. I am proud to count myself amongst the vast numbers of musicians who got their start in church. I am just as comfortable singing Schubert’s “Ave Maria” as I am my own rebellious arrangement of “Ring of Fire” or my original “Ladybug”. The liberty to create art our way is why I will always celebrate women in our local scene and encourage indie-alternative artists to continue the fight, no matter how difficult, no matter the inequity or injustices-eventually the cream will rise to the top and the talent will prevail. Lo-fi is a new cocktail lounge at 1323 J St. that hosts live Blues tinged music every other Sunday from 1-4 pm. Drop by for a delicious crafted beverage in a comfortable community focused space surrounded by music specially curated by the folks at lo-fi.

Deva Cafe will bring a collection of mixed styles in music for July. FIREWORKS

We stuffed them in mailboxes, lit the fuses and ran like hell as white-haired men— always in slippers and robes— came running out of their homes with broomsticks (or were they rifles?) to swat the flames that crackled inside, burning up all the bills. They should thank us, we joked.

My favorites were the snakes— those thick black dimes that burned and grew into ashy worms that wiggled and writhed as if the ground were too hot for their bodies. Everything seemed more alive when it was set on fire. Smoke bombs gave us cover as we pretended to be ninjas. Spinning flowers burned fiery rainbows across blacktops as I bowled them at my brother, hoping for a strike. We celebrated our independence by lighting things on fire— and then lost it all when our parents found out what we were up to. And no smoke bomb was big enough to make us disappear when our father came home and struck us like matchsticks against the same box they came from.

Happy July Modesto! I hope that you had

an amazing American Graffiti Month, what a way to kick off summer! Coming up in July is our very own YES Company’s production of Singin’ in the Rain. This performance will take place at the Gallo Center for the Arts on multiple dates this month and more information can be found at the Gallo Center website, www.galloarts.org. Our other amazing theater, The State, is holding an event that I am very excited to share about. They will be showing a sensory friendly film series for children on the autism spectrum and for their families. The movies being shown will be Hotel Transylvania 3 on July 11th at 1, Teen Titans Go on August 28th at 4, and September 28th at 11. Even better, this event will be free to attend! The lights will be up and the volume will be kept low, kids will be allowed to shout, and parents will be allowed to bring gluten- and casein-free treats. Another reason why I love Modesto is our location and access to so many cool places. One of those places being the beautiful Pinecrest Lake, less than 2 hours up the hill. It is such a fun place to

There are the warning signs: I’m irritable, more impatient, make mistakes, lose something. I’m tired. Business as usual isn’t working. When I feel a little dizzy, I know the heat has gotten to me. It’s time to switch gears. I need to slow down. Stop the multitasking and just do one thing at a time: If I eat I only eat, if I drive my car I only do that. Modesto’s Parks, Recreation, & Neighborhoods, and the Tzu Chi Foundation have collaborated to present their Annual Health Fair on July 16th at the city’s Maddux Youth Center. From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., the health fair will provide FREE clinical services such as dental, medical, acupuncture, pediatrics and more. This is a first-come first-serve event. The poetry slam, which is similar to the ILL LIST, has its own summertime finesse that definitely brings the heat to the stage. Go Downtown Modesto: Music in the Plaza

We are in the midst of Summer and we have some hot acts for you this month. Kicking things off on the First Friday, July 5th we have Spooky Mansion this quartet refers to themselves as surf, soul and rock n roll, we just say they are fun and Latin Indie band Valley Wolf kicking the month off. July 12th it is Frida Celebration in the Plaza with the David Perez Band, this Latin band will get you dancing and moving for sure. From Tracy, it is Funky Tim and the Merlots an area favorite playing rock n roll with a smooth Summer Groove. Ending the month is one of Modesto’s best and most loved acts, Tiffany Rose & the Outlaw Hearts if you have not seen them perform live(and we are sure you have) you need to make sure you come Downtown for this show. All shows are 7-9 pm come down early to get a good seat on the patio at Fuzio’s, Ralston’s or Graffiti Dogs or just bring your lawn chairs and dancing shoes..

Gallo Summer

The Gallo Center takes a summer breather while YES Company takes over the big stage for the amazing performance of Singin’ In the Rain. The new 2019/2020 season tickets are all on sale now. Some of the highlights this season are Jason Mraz, Dionne Warwick, Los Lobos and Blue Man Group. You can check out Broadway shows like Beautiful, the Carole King Musical, comedy from Ron White, great Christmas and Holiday shows and so much more. You really should consider being a Friend of the Center or a Circle Donor to help keep the Gallo Center for the Arts the premier performing arts center in our region. Cholo Goth Night at Urbano’s California Bistro

1016 H Street $ 15 July 20th 9 pm 21 and over. Hosted by Dave Parley from PRAYERS-(DJ set)---the man behind the music responsible for creating their own genre, Cholo Goth, which lyrically explores the harsh realities of gang and street life over throbbing beats and swirling synthesizers. Take a trip down the rabbit hole of the surreal, twisted Cholo Goth genre, exploring its sonic influences from Christian Death, Depeche Mode, Bauhaus, Pet Shop Boys and other Gothic rock and dark 80s music.
