Graffiti Museum

Graffiti Summer PreView

is Building!

Modesto Annual Graffiti Summer

has been moved to August when we can all gather again. But in the meantime, we are building a Graffiti Museum. The building is now ready to start outfitting. We have new plumbing, new electrical, we have new fast internet and many of the walls have been power washed, taped and prepped for new paint and even some new murals that are in the works. We had great visits with US Rep Josh Harder, State Rep Adam Gray and Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors, Mani Grewal and Buck Condit and others.

-Build 10th Street

Inside our museum, we will be creating a newly imagined “10th Street”. You can create or sponsor one of the businesses along the street. For example, my family is putting in a record store, Murphy’s Records, it will be a real record store. We are working with the Modesto Radio Museum to put a radio station inside the museum that will be their museum. There will be a Sanders Appliance Store. You can be a part of this and we want your help to create the magic that will attract people from all over the world.

-Did you know?

-Help us build it.

Dozens of Local businesses have donated their valuable labor and supplies to help build the Graffiti USA Museum. Thank you so much to Board Member Ron Pippin of Pippin Investments LLC and the members of the Valley Business Exchange who have been cutting, chopping, welding, digging and so much more to bring this museum to life. Over $450,000 of in-kind services have been provided and this means the world to us.

If you are a contactor, builder, pipe fitter, welder, carpenter, we need your services. The more things like sprinkler systems, HVAC systems, restrooms and commercial kitchen construction donated or at least at a reduced cost, the faster we can build this museum for all to enjoy. Thank you so much to the Valley Builders Exchange, many members have been working to build the museum and to date have contributed over $450,000 in in kind services. Are you next? Check out our facebook and website to see the business that have donated their time, talent and labor. @graffitiusamuseum www.graffitiusamuseum.com

In addition to the businesses we listed last month, we want to thank the Ross Carroll company for the paving and grading work and the George Reed company for the asphalt to help get our parking lot opened up and ready for the big tasks ahead! It looks great and we are pretty excited.

-Events

The Graffiti USA Museum has even been hosting events like the Kiwanis Chicken Dinner Drive Through and the the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Stanislaus Drive Trough dinner. We can even help you host your event as we go into the summer. We have 40,000 sq ft and a great parking lot.

-Donations

We need your donations, you can do it monthly, annually and we have some great donation gifts that will make you feel like the coolest cat in town. We are also talking big donations, like building naming donations. We now have a new recurring monthly donation option to make it easier.

-Naming Opportunities If you want to recognize one of your family with a wing, or an exhibit room, we can do that.

Please contact us a info@graffitiusamuseum.com to connect or you can donate at www.graffitiusamuseum.com We are on the corner of Coldwell and Historic 99, aka North 9th St. Let’s do this Modesto and bring the Graffiti USA Museum to life

It is exciting that Graffiti Summer will be happening this 2021 season. As California just opened up on June 15 there was no way to get the shows, parades and the planning done needed to have a successful Graffiti Summer. This last month, we had showings of American Graffiti at the State and the Ceres Drive in, many car shows and it just goes to show, it is always Graffiti Summer in Modesto USA. This August, we are going to have bright new Graffiti Summer plan. Visit Modesto has taken a big new step in coordinating many of the Graffiti Summer events around the event that stated it all, the North Modesto Kiwanis American Graffiti Festival. Visit Modesto is creating a new calendar and promotional plan with local, regional and national marketing to make sure the world knows about Modesto USA and our classic car heritage and George Lucas connections. Think about it, the entire world knows about Modesto from the movie American Graffiti. Modesto native George Lucas created the movie that has almost consumed Disney and all of these roads lead back to our city. Let’s make the best of it and take our place in global classic history. The Legends of the Cruise are key to our history. The Modesto Historic Cruise Route and Walk of Fame was created to showcase and tell the stories of the people that inspired George Lucas to make the movie. We continue to tell those stories each and every day on and this year, we will be inducting new members of the Walk of Fame that lines the sidewalks of 10th Street Plaza. Each one of these legends played their part in Modesto’s classic car history. First inductee was George Lucas in 2013 and the 2021 Legends of the Cruise will be announced in the August ModestoView Magazine. Everyone is invited to the induction ceremony on Thursday Subscribe to our You Tube channel at: youtube.com/modestoview

August 19, at 6:30 pm during the Mid Valley Chevy Club Park and Shine. It will be a night of legends so please join us.

Here are some key dates:

August 15 – Modesto Street Rod Show at McHenry Village August 15 – American Graffiti Movie– State Theatre August 16-19 – Mid Valley Chevy Club Park and Shines August 19 – Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame 10th St Plaza August 20 - American Graffiti Festival Cruise Parade – Downtown Modesto August 21 & 22 – American Graffiti Festival Car Show – Muni Golf Course August 27 – Car Lovers Show – State Theatre August 28 - Grease Sing Along, Car Lovers Movies – State Theatre August 29 - Coffee and Cars Events and Car Lovers Movies Fridays - Cruise In with Elvis and more – A & W Drive In, Modesto During this time, we will be working hard on the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum that will soon be the home base for Modesto’s travel and tourism efforts and will be a global welcome sign to millions of people. We can’t wait for them to visit. Please help support the Graffiti USA Museum do that we can truly take or place. www.graffitiusamuseum.com

O Modforesto GThings Kids to Do...

Summer is here, and school is out, and the State is opening up. The last few weeks, we have felt the heat so prevalent in the Central Valley, and if you have children, I encourage you to take them out to any of Modesto’s Parks and Recreations Splash Pads. A fun way for them to get out of the house and stay cool. The pools are opened back up, and swim lessons are back. You can sign your children up at modestogov.com/prnd. Another fun and educational activity for not just kids but the whole family is the Great Valley Museum, open Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm; more information available mjc.edu/instruction/sme/gvm/ During the Summer months and all year long, if your children are interested in learning how to play a musical instrument or increase their skill level, Valley Music Institute in Modesto and GKMusic in Manteca are great music schools. They will increase your child’s proficiency, but they will learn how to perform with a band, which will help with confidence and social interactions. Coming soon is the Modesto Children’s Museum; they are taking over the old FatCat building and are working hard to make it an interactive space for kids. It will be an educational and engaging experience for the area youth. For more information or to donate modestochildrensmuseum.org If your children are looking to do something more artistic, the Mistlin Gallery ccaagallery.org, Carnegie Arts in Turlock carnegieartsturlock.org and Black Sheep Inks theinkoftheblacksheep.wordpress.com offer art classes. There are also a ton of other activities, including dance, theatre and more. Keep your kids occupied and learning.

in your car or inside, you can get a chilled glass mug of the best root beer with a delicious vanillas ice cream, creating this amazing float. Dole Whip at Graffiti Dog

One of my all-time favorite memories of Disneyland is getting the Dole Whip while we wait for the next show at the Tiki Room. Yes, that tiki tiki tiki room. The amazing creamy pineapple taste of the Dole Whip is unmistakable. And in the name of quality, you just don’t get to make Dole Whips, you have to be approved to make and serve Dole Whips. This amazing treat can be found at Graffiti Dogs on Modesto’s Historic Cruise Route at 1002 10th St Modesto 209238-9990 @graffitidogsmodesto

But wait, there’s more.

There is only one thing that can make an already incredible Dole Whip even better, and that is rum. Yes, a nice dark rum floater. Thanks to our friends at the Ralston’s Goat, you can bring your Dole Whip over from the Graffiti Dogs, and you can buy a shot of rum and add this to your treat. Try it if you get a chance and then sit and enjoy at the Goat #spiking bar @ralstonsgoat at 10th and J Streets.

All American Sundae

A big hot fudge sundae in a pint glass. Yes friends, this is a big monster sundae, loaded with tasty vanilla ice cream, fresh whipped cream, slathered in hot fudge and topped with a cherry. A true summer classic. Like all hot fudge sundaes, it gets better as you get closer to the bottom and in the pint glass, it is easy to eat. Enjoy at Rivets American Grill @Rivetsgrill Honorable Mentions- Chocolate dipped cones at the SnoWhite Drive In on Yosemite Blvd, the Shakes at Velvet Creamery with fresh made ice cream and virtually anything at the Ice Cream Company in Century Center.

ART VIEW

Modesto is Brighter with Art By Jim Christiansen Independence Day is here, and more galleries and venues re-opening in Modesto. Art Walk is rumored to get a restart and new shows on display with more visiting hours. You can see the venues gearing up with the new parking striping on J Street, and the upgraded outdoor eating islands, and the building appearance with new paint, and in some cases, new murals. Café Urbano has their cat now on the outside wall, matching the indoor décor. You may have to look in the rearview mirror as you barrel down one-way H street, but worth a glance. Credited artist Cova Street Art. Prospect Theater Project on K Street in the other direction, much more colorful now, and easy to identify with their Logo Mural and new façade painted panels. New box office window too. Produced by volunteers with artist Phil Murillo The Chartreuse Muse held their Grand Re-Opening June 19, complete with a FASM mural in progress over their entrance awning marquis. The mural says Art School and Gallery in the design. I caught the finished product the next day. The Muse is now open at regular hours again. Over at Barkin’ Dog Grill, artist/musician Jeff Moore is the featured artist until 3rd Wednesday in August as we adjust back to a monthly schedule. If an artist seeking a feature venue spot, let me or Barkin’ Dog know of your interest. With indoor dining back, more people see the art. For artists seeking more exposure for their work, the Stanislaus Artist Open

Studio tour has expanded the opportunity to add artists to the October 16 and 17 events. If you aren’t on the original prepandemic roster, you can apply for a spot by filling out an entry form and paying the $75 fee by August 1. If you need to share a space, the Open Studio committee can try and coordinate that with another artist or venue. Artists already on the map will need to confirm their applications with a new form, as Open Studio will reissue a new map, as there have been changes in venue status, artist participation, and the addition of any new artists, studios, or changes in display address. Stanislausaos@ gmail.com The Annual Carnegie Arts Center Showcase opens July 9 and runs to September 5. I got one of my two entries accepted, “Summer – 2020.” Visitors are charged a fee to see the exhibition at Carnegie, but the First Fridays of the month are free admission. More information www.carnegieartsturlock.org

The big show in Modesto this month is “Domestics: Home is Art” which opens July 1. Sponsored by the Kemper CPA Group LLC, the theme is scenes and images found in and around the house. This show was open to Central California Art Association members and non-members alike, and juried in. I submitted four entries, and don’t know if any got into the show. The show will also feature a retrospective of artist Annette Van LaarMolnar.

Workshops and classes offered at the usual suspects through summer. Dragonfly Art for Life, MoCon Conservatory, Chartreuse Muse, Mistlin Galler, Peer Recovery Art Project all in downtown Modesto Arts District and Carnegie Arts in Turlock. Kruse-Lucas gallery on Tully features a three-artist celebration of Graffiti Summer, and not far from the new Modesto Graffiti Classic Car Museum, featuring classic cars and memorabilia.

Rivets American Diner

Hard work, great fun and tasty food are some of the most rewarding things in life. Especially when that food comes with great service, amazing sides, great cocktails and features live music regularly. Over the years, Rivets American Grill has been one of my go-tos. Not only do I really enjoy the ambience and food, I have been lucky enough to play music with my band Third Party and Tim Allen on some evenings and really enjoy the people at Rivets. There is something great about the places that are owned by Roman Wagner as his team is really focused on making the theme and the experience great for customers. Candace Fleming at Rivets truly believes that each customer is special. “We want people to come back and enjoy Rivets over and over. Giving that extra customer service makes people want to come back. It should be a happy place”. And it is. From the friendliness at the bar, to the severs that explain the menu and the magic that Chef Juan delivers from the kitchen, Rivets works hard to make sure that you have a truly great American experience. From the moment you walk in, the giant paintings of the Statue of Liberty, the oversized flag and “We the People”, you know that people are working hard to make your visit special. Beyond all of that, the food will keep you coming back. Rivets has a big menu, so there is truly no way that someone in your group won’t find something tasty. First, you have to have one of Rivet’s cocktails.

They have a really fun menu and since rum is my favorite, I started with a “Little Hot Mess”, dragonberry rum, lime and strawberry puree. Yum. My go to appetizer is always the Fried Pickles. This gets your visit off to a good start and gets us ready for our great American summer experience, we dive in to the biggest cheese we can get on the Hall Of Fame Fort Knox burger. This is a big giant burger, topped with a slab of golden deep fried cheese, appropriately named after America’s gold repository. With cheese that big on a big burger, is has to be good. And it is. If you are craving a sandwich, the American Rueben is so delicious. The pastrami, the rye bread and on the side, TOTS. I love tots. Of course there are lighter items on the menu like chicken ceaser and apple walnut salads, wraps and exquisitely grilled fish like the almond crusted cod . There is also a great selection of pastas and their specialty, the short ribs. Chef Juan also makes gluten free and will customize to your particular needs. But this red white and blue July, we are here for the selection of over 26 different burgers, fries and of course, dessert! Our experience was topped with the the All American Sundae. Friends, this is served in a big pint glass and this is a true cherry topper. We also spied the Molten Lava Cake as it was being served, amazing. Also, don’t forget to check out the strawberry shake. (I get mine with a shot of vodka in it. Don’t

judge me) There is so much to like on this menu and if this helps get you started with your Rivets experience, you are welcome. One thing you will notice at Rivets, is that it feels open, friendly and easy to hang out. The team at Rivets is always welcoming and you won’t wait long to run into someone you know, or if you don’t, you soon will meet new friends and regulars. They also have a rotating selection of local craft beers, like Dust Bowl, King Kong, Last Call and more. Even if you don’t have time for a long meal, you can come in, grab a seat and the bar and enjoy on your own. I have done this more than a few times on a busy day. If you go to Rivets on most Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays, there are live bands as music is always celebrated at Rivets. Additionally, they have a few fun video games and you can enjoy some nice patio dining. Bottom line, get your hard-working self over to Rivets American Grill, enjoy the burgers, the cocktails, music and the great service and you will soon become a regular. Plus, lots of easy parking. See ya there.

Walking into the brewery and taproom, the welcoming atmosphere took us for a ride that we thoroughly enjoyed. It was 100 degrees when we visited, but the shade, the fans, the misters and the beer slushies kept you from knowing how hot it really was. We were greeted by friendly staff and 20 taps (plus three beer slushie options!). We noticed storage containers that had been turned into temperature-controlled fridges and bathrooms, and plenty of tables under a giant canopy strung with twinkle lights. There are purse (or diaper bag) holders on the walls. But the showpiece of this space comes from the beautiful massive stage with a fantastically majestic Highland Cow sigil front-and-center. We had to know why a Highland Cow was chosen to represent a brewery in Oakdale, Ca. And now you too will know the answer because we had the honor to drink beers with two of the owners and delve into how Dying Breed will keep Oakdale and its traditions alive and well for generations. Joe Novotny and Josh Malcolm co-own Dying Breed with fellow Oakdalian Dan Wood, and they brought on Colin Rosenburger as their brewmaster. What started as a dream to own a brewery in Arnold, CA turned topsy-turvy when the opportunity instead arose to build from the ground-up in Oakdale. With each owner using their different skill sets (marketing, accounting and construction) they turned a lonely little warehouse into a brewery, taproom and stage. They built Dying Breed as a place for the community to come together and simply enjoy each other’s company using the three pillars of good ol’ Oakdale tradition: excellent beer, excellent music, and excellent company. And they have succeeded in all three aspects as it’s easy to tell within minutes of walking through their gate that you are welcome, you are appreciated and they are eager to serve you your new favorite beer and hear your stories. That’s right, they are waiting to get to know *you*, their customer. They want to continue growing and melding Dying Breed to ensure it stays a safe meeting place to gather and commune, and they do that by listening to what you want and what makes you comfortable, and what will keep FOLLOW US:

you coming back. So share your thoughts and stories over a 50/50 Creamsicle Sour, Shameless Blonde, Wild Berry Seltzer, Made in the IPA or an Old Ebenezer. They are all phenomenal beers, and you can’t go wrong with anyone you choose. This is more than the idea of your local watering hole, it’s also more than the idea of your office water cooler. It’s the love child of both ideas, and this love child happens to look just like a Highland Cow. But we were supposed to tell you why they chose a Highland Cow! Well, because Oakdale was founded by the famous Francis Cottle and his herd of cattle in 1853 and sure maybe it wasn’t a herd of Highland Cattle, but Highland Cows are the most adorable and friendly-looking cows around, so frankly, why NOT a Highland Cow? The funky playful Hairy Coo (as they are called in Scotland) represents the essence of who Dying Breed really is. And what beer was it that got Joe and Josh into beer? For Joe, it was Pyramid’s Apricot and for Josh, it was Mad River’s Jamaican Red. After the interview, sitting back and enjoying the beer slushies, Brandi talks about watching a barn raising in an old western show growing up, possibly Bonanza or Gunsmoke. (Don’t judge, we are wellrounded media Millennials and they are great shows!) Sitting under that massive shade, surrounded by walls lovingly made from pallets in an upcycling tribute, it truly feels as if we have witnessed a barn raising: this community came together to make this place a reality, and this amazing space they created is the aftermath of all that effort. Friends and family who hammered, painted, tore apart pallets, welded and sanded, made this gorgeous mecca in the heart of the valley. W E I V R E T IN One of the most exciting things about our community coming out of the COVID pandemic is seeing the youth arts programs returning to the stages. Our youth have been hit so hard with the school closures and many of the cancellation of the arts program now the stages are opening up, it is time to dance and sing. YES Company has been an important part of the Modesto cultural scene for 30 years. Founder and actor/director Melanee Wyatt was instrumental in the development of YES Company. Members of Modesto Performing Arts and other organizations would help and mentor the young talent of our region to amazing results. After the 2018 production, YES Company became a part of the Gallo Center for the Arts under the guidance of Tiffany Davis and Cortney Hurst with the continued support of SCOE, the Stanislaus County Office of Education. This month, YES will be the reopening act at the Gallo Center as 30 years of YES performances will be presented as a special greatest hits concert style revue. There are certain to be many favorites performed. Let’s meet Tiffany and Cortney. Tiffany Davis, YES Company Director Cortney Hurst, Director of Arts Education – Gallo Center ModestoView How does it feel to be ready to be on an open stage again? Cortney: It feels great! The Gallo Center is not meant to be empty and dark. We are more than ready to get back to work providing these very special opportunities for our students and to get back to the business of entertaining our patrons! MV: It has been an amazing 30 years, what is it like to continue the legacy of YES Company? Cortney: It’s an honor to continue in the legacy and tradition and history of YES Company. It’s also a responsibility we take seriously. Tiffany and I both are the result of our community’s arts organizations so

we have a personal understanding of how impactful programs like YES Company are for our students. MV: Are you continually amazed to see the talent of our local youth? Cortney: Always. Kids have an incredible capacity especially when challenged. We’ve talked about this a lot, especially this year, as we’re facing so many new challenges coming out COVID. It’s been a year and a half since we’ve been able to work with our students and so we’re asking a lot of them in this rehearsal process as they build back stamina and strength learning this show. MV: YES Company has developed a lot of talent. What have some of the alumni accomplished? Tiffany: The unique part of the YES Company program is our focus on education along with a musical theater experience. Through workshops, guest lecturers, and our curriculum component we hope to add to our students’ tool sets to set them up for success in the next step of their journey. Whether that’s higher education, professional work in

performing arts, or entering the workforce. Our YES alum have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, teachers, nurses, police officers, musicians, artists, actors, directors, and parents to new YES Company students. MV: How important do you think arts are to youth development? Cortney: The arts are crucial. An education in the arts naturally lends itself to so many of the skills required in the 21st century job force. Things like creativity, collaboration, communication and flexibility. This is what our students learn in theater, music and dance. MV: What has surprised you most in preparing for this anniversary show? Cortney: We talk about YES Company being a summer program, but for us, it’s a yearround job planning, prepping, preparing, etc. so the fact that we’re able to offer YES Company this year immediately coming out of our shutdown feels like a miracle. It’s putting 12 months of work into two months. It’s truly a testament to the team that supports YES Company, some of who have been working with the program for 20 years and also to our students for trusting us especially with this kind of production.

Cortney Hurst

MV: Tiffany, former YES leader Melanee Wyatt was also your former director when you were performing, how did you view the challenge coming in to this role in the new YES Company? Tiffany: It has been especially important to me to honor our history and include our alumni in the journey forward. Mel impacted the lives of so many young people through this incredible program, and words can’t describe how much it means to me to have the continued support of alumni who come back to share the spirit of YES Company. MV: How has the partnership with SCOE and the Gallo Center changed YES Company? Cortney: There has definitely been some change with our new partnership. YES Company is now housed in our Arts Education department as one of about half a dozen programs we have each year. So while it’s important to us that we maintain the mission and original intention of YES Company, its also important that it fits into the mission of the Gallo Center and our education department. So, the original piece of YES Company which is the summer program for 7th-12th graders remains the

same. YES Kids and YES Kidettes, which were the programs for younger students have been absorbed into our Gallo Center Youth Academy, which is a similar musical theater program for students in 1st -8th grade. MV: What has been your favorite revived YES Company performance that you are bringing to the stage this month? Cortney: Don’t ask us to pick a favorite! J Each number is a favorite! All joking aside, each time I sit in a rehearsal I have a new favorite but the one number that stands out for me is Hold Your Head Up High from the musical Honk! Which is the story of The Ugly Duckling and I think it’s a perfect metaphor for YES Company. The song features two of our older students who sing the role of Ida, the mother duck, who takes in Ugly, the ugly duckling, which is sung by all of youngest students. YES Company is a family for so many of our students. It’s a place where traditions are passed down to each new class and where they learn to find and use their voice and that’s what we hear in that song. Tiffany: I love all of the company numbers. You can’t beat the energy of the full cast on stage. The joy of performing, and reuniting with our community and friends, radiates from a stage full of bright faces. MV: Will you hint about any surprises in this show? Cortney: It’s not a YES Company show without some surprises and showstoppers, after all, kids have flown more than once and we made it rain on stage in 2019. So without giving too much away, we have a few of those surprises up our sleeves for this year. MV: If you had unlimited budget, what would you add to the YES Company organization? Cortney: Space! As our education programs continue to grow we have our eye set on our own classroom and rehearsal space. MV: Beatles or Stones? Cortney: Beatles Tiffany: Beatles CM: I knew I liked YES Company. Do not miss this amazing YES Company 30th Anniversary Show as the first reopening performance at the the Gallo Center for the Arts on July 23, 24 and 25th. Telling a Story: One Cover (The Road to 100 Covers) By Michael J Mangano

100 Mangano Covers By Chris Murphy

ModestoView began in late 1997 as a hobby to help educate and excite our local community about how cool Modesto is with a couple of downtown webcams. The Quixotic mission has been a lot of fun as we evolved into a community resource, a marketing force and a champion for telling our community stories, from our history, from Rockabilly, Graffiti, music, the arts, our non-profits and our local civic responsibilities and volunteer efforts. In 2006 we started printing ModestoView magazine supported by local writers that each had a section of the community that they wanted to promote and celebrate. Each month, one of my projects was to come up with a monthly theme and a cover for each issue. Each cover was a snapshot of what was happening in the Modesto area at the time. In 2012, I met Michael Mangano at a Slosh Ball game in Enslen Park. After a couple of beers, we quickly learned that we could do something together. MJ took us to a new place of creativity. It is so fun to brainstorm and scribble out an idea and to see MJ bring it to life or just let MJ’s imagination run wild. It is magic and has changed ModestoView for the better and really helped us punch through and be a true community resource. It is hard to believe that MJ as done 100 covers. Time flies, our friendships have gotten stronger and I truly believe there is still so much to do. Modestoview has really been fun and we are glad we have made a difference in our community, made people smile, think and see our city for the cool place it is and can be. Thanks to MJ Mangano for taking us to a new level and we have won many national art awards for our little local publication. I would stack up our monthly magazine against anything and am really proud of what our View Crew puts together each month with the great guidance of publishing pro Pete Grimaldi and the MAMA winning promoter Middagh Goodwin. So now, we get MJ out from behind the camera and get him to talk about this road to 100 covers.

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

As I write this I think back on how I got here. After 18 years I left the video game art world and picked up a camera. I had no idea down the road I would combine photos and graphics together. In 2012 something interesting happens, with the help of my creative friends Jenn and Mike Allsup and the amazing costume shop of Dana Walters called Daydreams and Nightmares. In that store with all those costumes, my imagination was like the kid in the candy store. I started down the road of making creative portraits; photographing people in costumes and creating a graphic background. Years later I learned about a group of people called Cosplayers that do love to dress up celebrating comics, steam punk, and much more. That reignited my passion all over again. In September of 2012, I met Chris Murphy the editor of ModestoView Magazine at a Slosh Ball game, he saw my art and asked if I could create the October cover. Halloween was both of our favorite seasons and when we shot the whole scene at Daydreams and Nightmares, a creative friendship was born. Now the ideas for the covers every month are a brainstorming effort between Chris and me; we sit together, over cocktails of course, and pitch ideas. I may get a scribble on a napkin of his idea and then I am off to try to create that vision. Inspiration often comes from pop culture like the 200th Anniversary of Mary Shelly Frankenstein, and then we decide to put the Monster and his bride in a soda shop together or the 35th anniversary of Back to the Future, or put Marty McFly riding his Hoverboard through the 10th Street Plaza. Each June, Graffiti Summer, we try to pull out a scene from American Graffiti. There are some months where my imagination and inspiration have a field day and that Is May and October; Star Wars and Halloween are my preferred covers to create. Last year, we told the story of Modesto over 150 years during the pandemic with each month representing a different decade. My all-time favorite cover to this day is the 2019 May cover, an homage to Norman Rockwell’s “The Run Away” with a Star Wars twist. What made it even more special was the use of action figures to create the shot; yeah for a short while I got to play pretend with toys. It is not a stretch to say that Norman Rockwell is one of my idols and major inspirations for many of my covers. He always tells a story and I do my best to do the same. For most of my June Graffiti covers, I try to bring out that nostalgic art style. I also like putting little Easter eggs in the cover for people to discover. On the road to 100 covers, what I most enjoy is meeting and working with all these amazing people like the Moradians for the Zombie family or the Victorines, our cosplaying Frankenstein Monster and his Bride, Eli and Jaci Lester our rockabilly 50’s FOR MORE MODESTO INFO: www.modestoview.com

couple; Rockin’ Santa Mike Allsup and Jenn Allsup, and let’s not forget Sam and Ruhi, the Ah You’s, Heather Brent, the Faros, the KAT Country crew, Abigail, Ryan and Madison, our local bands and musicians and so many others who have been part of this journey. There have been so many magic moments with them all as they followed me down the rabbit hole of my imagination; not blinking an eye when I would ask them to pretend to row a boat, point an imaginary space ship, or as a ghost standing in front of a haunted McHenry mansion. Even more fun is to tell a group car cruisers to pretend they are all getting busted by cops playing dice. Even when there were no props, they all went along for the ride. Many times I photograph them standing in front of a blank wall or black background, then later I would create the whole world in Photoshop. Now Chris and I will agree our most loved covers are the ones with the kids. We love how excited they get when they come to shoot. After the magazine comes out we love hearing stories about how they got that 15 minutes of fame in school. We have seen many of my young cover kids grow up to great young adults; like the ice cream eating July 2013 cover model Sofia Johnson who we get to see grow up to become one of our writers. So many great memories creating these covers which always challenge me to find new ways to get inspired. I have been blessed that some of my covers have won awards but my true blessing is to be able to create and tell new stories. As long as I find people who will play pretend with me I will make 100 more.

Song of the Southpaw

David Finley does much of his best songwriting from behind the wheel, whether on an interstate highway or a back road somewhere. His musical journey has taken him from singing gospel at family gatherings in Arkansas from an early age to a tenure as a performing songwriter in Nashville, to leading one of Modesto’s most exciting original music party bands. David performs mostly as a vocalist but is also, as I discovered just a few weeks ago, a handy left-handed guitarist. He’s got quite a passion for entertaining but also for supporting and promoting other talent and has become an esteemed member of the Modesto Unplugged collective. In the mid-1990s, David’s family encouraged him to try his luck in Nashville. At first, he visited for a week and greatly enjoyed his time there, even getting to meet with Mark Cash (Johnny’s nephew) who offered further encouragement. During an audition there in 1996, David was discovered by Marcus Tremper, an A&R agent with the Opryland Music Group. The two began writing together, and in 1999, Tremper produced David’s debut album ‘Livin’ Proof.’ They remain close friends to this day. David recounts many magical evenings performing in Printers Alley during his Nashville years, even serenading the likes of Mark Chesnutt from directly across the bar when he wandered into a show one night. David tends to full forming a song in his

head before committing anything to paper. One track from his album, ‘All I Got For Christmas Was The Blues’ – from an idea presented to him by Marcus - came together while driving from one side of Nashville to the other. He proceeded to sing it for the entire 5-1/2 hour drive to Arkansas to visit family, no music on the radio, no distraction from the melody. And immediately after greeting his family members, he ran to grab a pen and paper. David hasn’t slowed down since relocating to Modesto in 2004. His current band True South can sometimes be found rocking The Dragonfly Art For Life, House of Beef in Oakdale, Stockton’s Asparagus Festival, or the Brickyard in Roseville, among many venues around California. Their range runs from country to southern rock to blues to an Irish-inspired song David composed for his daughter when she was born. David’s vision for the group is to progress to a national- and then global-touring act, continuing to build on his love for pure entertainment. “I would rather live with the music in my head than not,” he says. Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. MODESTO UNPLUGGED. www. modestounplugged.com.

SONG WRITER VIEW The Coronavirus pandemic disproportionately affected female-owned businesses resulting in “shecessions”. It is time to rebuild. When it comes to gender inequality, we cannot afford to lose ground. There is growing concern that COVID has affected a gender-based inequality globally that could snowball into a relapse and even more permanent closures on the horizon. This incontrovertible crisis hit the foundation, where women often hold vulnerable and precarious jobs. Why? 60% of all women’s employment is in the informal economy with few protections from dismissal and limited action to social protections. Women of color owned businesses failed at a rate of nearly 75%. 70% of all health care workers who risked their lives during the pandemic were women. While there are still fewer numbers of women-owned entertainment businesses/ venues, the devastation of shutdown was greatest amongst these. For the private sector to be part of the solution it must place women and girls at the center of their efforts during post COVID times. Make a calculated point to visit women-owned venues and thrust fervent support toward these place that hires 50% female entertainment at a minimum. Visit your local chamber and various social media sights to learn about the various womenowned business groups and utilize their resources. Ensuring women’s representation and inclusion makes for a more diverse, sustainable community. When support is shown to women across the value chain where commerce operates and thrive- there is less crime, better public services and health and deeper arts and cultural enhancement. Challenge local venues, galleries, entertainment entities and event centers with your spending power to hire equal numbers of female artists, musicians, caterers and other creatives. Your voice and your choice live in your monetary support and you are allowed to contribute feedback and make inquiries. A majority have a website, a YELP affiliation and some may have corporate superiors- seek answers and provide advocacy. The Queen Bean Coffeehouse has long had a deep relationship with the community by valuing and intertwining art and music. Because of the loyalty by its customers and the Queen Bean’s reciprocal loyalty to the health and safety of its patrons, the coffee house was able to weather the unprecedented time by adhering to the CDC guidelines,

Owner, Debra Martinez, is very happy to express- “We will host an acoustic jam, starting in July on the third Saturday, after that, every second, third and fourth Saturday of the month from 4-6 pm.” It’s up to all of us to fortify the push toward economic stability in our women-owned businesses like never before. Lauren Jamieson, Owner of lofi cocktail lounge stated that they were able to manage the pandemic by “ good luck and the graciousness and unwavering support of our landlord, Mitch Gagos as well as the Gagos family.” Jamieson also revealed that they have “recently acquired the restaurant space next door, and will be expanding lo-fi to include a diner, serving classic American food for breakfast, lunch and brunch. All of the original lo-fi crew will be back, with some new members joining us on the diner side. We can’t wait to reopen our doors to the community and getting back to what we love doing most.” Music will continue to be a focal point as it was pre-shutdown at lo-fi. As we continue forward as more and more of our normal modes of entertainment return with some alterations, I implore you to be better than pre-pandemic days. I’m asking every ModestoView reader to ask their friends, family and associates to advocate for more hiring of female musicians. Anyone who says that they hire based upon who is “the best person(s) for the job” and “stop making this political”-is shutting the conversation down because negative effects of inequality do not affect THEM. They seem to believe that gender balance is a threat and do not want to do the work that is required to strive for balance. We are miles and miles away from gender equality. Take notice if the annual faires, fests and events include female artists in a balanced number as their male peers. Do not settle for business as usual. Insist that this community is worth trying harder for, injecting more diversity into and cultivating gender equality. As we celebrate the 245th year since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, reflect on how the present year brought all the social deficiencies and failures in equity onto the surface. Join me on July 3rd as I lead our community in the National Anthem at our Independence Day parade at 9:30 am in the shadow of the Stanislaus County courthouse, an older, woman of color who is “Oh, so glad I’m livin’ in the U.S.A”- regardless of how far we still need to go. Our daughters are worth it.

Hypnosis: Just Another State of Mind By Middagh Goodwin

You want to go to the State Theatre on August 6th, you need to go see John Farley perform feats of hypnotism, at the count of 3 you will go to www.thestate.org and purchase tickets. One, Two, Three. Did it work? Yes, great. Now, so you know what you are getting yourself into. John Farley Jr has been performing hypnosis around the country and has been seen on ABC, NBC, PBS: The content of Hypnotism remains a closely guarded secret, but if you’ve seen John Farley before, you know that you will be crying with laughter! MV-What can be expected at one of your live events? JF-The live show “HYPNOTISM” in Modesto is extra special. I’ll be honoring the nearly two centuries that stage hypnotists have mesmerized crowds. The show gives the audience an opportunity to either “see the show or be the show” by being hypnotized by me live on stage. It’s both comedy hypnosis mixed with inspirational moments that those in attendance will remember for years to come. I want those fortunate enough to attend this one-night performance to laugh out loud and be inspired too.

influenced me. At that time I was studying sports psychology and reading about sports hypnosis. Eventually, this led to learning hypnosis from the old-time masters — the Yoda’s of their time. The hypnosis stage show is an opportunity to simultaneously entertain and educate many people at once. The show reaches those who would otherwise miss out on what hypnosis has to offer. MV-What is the most enjoyable thing about doing events like the one you have scheduled at the State Theatre? JF-Preparing for the show is enjoyable. That includes practicing for the show itself, but also working out — getting in great shape — it’s a good motivator. The most enjoyable thing during the show is the joy and the amazement that it brings the audience and the participants on stage. Laughter is a universal language. Inspiration is always welcome. John Farley Jr will be performing one night only at the Historic State Theatre in downtown Modesto on August 6th, 7 pm. Tickets can be purchased from the boxoffice or online at www.thestate.org

MV-What got you into hypnotism/and in turn using it as part of a stage act? JF-I was struck by lightning (just kidding ; ). I saw a stage show in college which

Well now is the time to get back to living our lives and getting on with our bad selves! I walked into a store wearing a mask and the grocer said you don’t have to wear a mask! I retorted yes they make it hard to breathe, itches your moustache, hard to read facial expressions and taking it off said: “and it hides my beautiful face!” Yes, a little levity is in order after surviving a friggin global pandemic! I think we should hire a comedian just to get us all back in the groove. I think it is too soon to sing “Happy Days are Here Again” but I am optimistic that things “are getting better all the time, can’t get worse.” Music and arts are in-store and people are hungry for getting back to being together, I have had more hugs in the last month than the whole last year! We are trying to do more live events outside with social distancing to keep people safer and inside shows with smaller capacity at Ralston’s Goat, Downtown Bauer’s and Café Urbano. Summer Fitness Family Fitness

By Efren Martinez

Summer came roaring back along with our State reopening. Although we may not be out of this global pandemic entirely, our State and County are able to enjoy some of the loosened rules. This is due to your diligence and good behavior in following the Covid restrictions and getting vaccinated. It’s been a long time coming and I’m happy it’s now happening as we enter into the hottest part of the year. I for one can’t work out wearing a mask. I’d pass out from breathing in my own C02. Thankfully the rules have changed and many of us can now go without a mask in many places of businesses, including most gyms. Timing is everything and as the summer sizzles it’s best to move your workouts indoors. It is just too hot to workout outside in the summer unless you start your workout at the crack of dawn. Another concern from working out outside is the air quality. Last summer we had the worst air because of all those wildfires. Although I sure hope we do not have a repeat of last year’s wildfires our States extreme drought conditions make it an unfortunate possibility. So let’s keep our workouts safe and healthy with workouts as much as possible indoors. Many gyms are offering specials right now for you to join or even come back. If you decide that outdoor fitness is for you please remember the sunscreen, stay continuously hydrated, avoid working out

in the hottest part of the day and be mindful of how your body is reacting to the heat. Knowing the difference between heat stroke and heat exhaustion can save your life. Unlike heat exhaustion, a heat stroke requires immediate medical attention. Someone experiencing heatstroke may have a headache, confusion, no sweating, rapid heart rate, nausea or vomiting and may lose consciousness. If heat stroke is suspected it is vital to take the following steps. Move to an air-conditioned place, take a cold shower or using cold compresses, drink plenty of fluids, remove tight or extra clothing layers. If your symptoms continue or worsen, seek medical attention right away. One of the best ways I personally know to quickly bring down the body’s temperature is to apply cold packs directly under your armpits. Another mindful note is to please remember not to take your pets for a walk anytime the temperature is over 80 degrees. Quite often we think it’s OK because even when the outdoor temperature is a pleasant 77 degrees for a walk, the street payment can be as hot as 125 degrees or more. Your pet’s paws are susceptible to 1st and 2nd-degree burns. Another simple way to tell whether or not the pavement is too hot for your dog to walk on is to put your bare hand on it and try to hold it there for 10 seconds. If it is too hot for you to keep your hand on for 10 seconds or longer it is too hot for your dog to walk on. Let’s stay safe and mindful this summer for ourselves and our pets while we work out and work off those shelter in place extra pounds. The basics of water safety and actions to take in an emergency can be practiced with your littles ones at home as well. You can do so by practicing blowing bubbles out the mouth and the nose in a bathtub. An effective method to teach mouth bubbles is by holding one finger in front of the child’s mouth and telling them to “blow out the birthday candle” first from above, then at the surface, and then below the water. To teach nose bubbles, you can have the child pretend their hands are a tissue and they are blowing their nose under the water. These skills will teach a child to release air when they are submerged in water rather than trying to take it in and can drastically reduce the chances of choking or drowning. You may also want to teach your child how to recognize an emergency and call for help—

making sure they know to call 9-1-1, who will come when they call that number, and what information to give to the operator. Finally, many summer activities—such as swimming and beach or lake days—are centered around or near water. I recommend watching Splasher the Frog’s water safety videos on the Modesto Irrigation District (MID) YouTube channel. It is not only important to know how to swim but also whereto swim safely as drowning can become fatal within minutes. I hope that this month you learned the importance of first aid and water safety and the several ways you can obtain these skills. Splasher and I want to wish you a very safe summer filled with plenty of fun. Stay cool!

Modesto 4th Parade

By Chris Murphy One of the longest running 4th of July Parades will return in full size this year on Saturday, July 3 at 9:30 am presented by the hard working volunteers of the Modesto Kiwanis Club. This is one of the best community events of the year and last years was a scaled down version that paraded 10th St while there was a ceremony at 10th St Place. This year, get your blankets and chairs out and line the downtown streets of Modesto and cheer on our local dignitaries, our local company floats, the equestrians, the Shriners, Clampers, car clubs, marching band and so many more groups that make our community unique and special. This year will be a tribute to the late Al Menshew, who for many years was Modesto’s historian, toastmaster, volunteer and parade announcer. I am so deeply honored to carry on Al’s tradition to celebrate and recognize those in our community making a difference. My co-announcer will be Ian Riley of KHOP 95.1 radio. The Grand Marshals this year will be the leaders of our local Modesto Rotary Club celebrating 100 years. There will be vendors on I Street between 10th and 11th and the route will be the traditional route from 10th to J to 11th to I street. The judges stand will be on the Stanislaus County Court lawn. Check out one of the downtown restaurants that will be open for breakfast and get a ringside seat. After the parade, spend the day in downtown and enjoy. Fireworks will be held later at John Thurman field at sunset. Grab your blanket and get a spot at Muni Golf course. For more info, www.modestojulyparade.com Please see the tribute to Al Menshew in our November 2020 issue. We remember him fondly. www.modestoview.com/the-magazine

Rewards of Being Human

ZEN VIEW

By Mary Layton

What are the rewards in your life? Many of us may feel that as long as we have fun and excitement in our lives everything will be good. Having fun is such a welcome reward for putting up with life’s challenges and disappointments. We need to have fun. But sometimes too much fun can also get us off the good path. The fun lovers will most likely argue that it’s the way of he world and not to worry about it. Yet there is the possibility that following what seems fun and exciting too much of the time can eventually backfire and hurt us in some way. I believe many of us go through life believing “this is just as good as it gets”. But I think this can be a trap because if you want to find the best in life which I think is Love - then there’s a lot of work to be done. It’s about finding out who you really are. How you really want to live your life. What you want your relationships to be like. What is holding you back? I think this kind of honest search for oneself is rewarding. Growing older also has rewards

as I can learn so much from my mistakes and free myself from my illusions. The famous Italian story of Pinocchio is a wonderful description of what the journey of growing into a good human being can be all about. The story has been made into a very beautiful movie. Of all the different adaptations I love the one directed by Matteo Garrone the best. The movie is about a wooden puppet that is rebellious and succumbs to all kinds of temptations. His father who created him out of a tree trunk is unable to guide him. Because of his many lies Pinocchio gets into more and more trouble. Things look dark and hopeless. But eventually it is Pinocchio’s ability to love and connect to love that ultimately ends his suffering. He is rewarded for his understanding of what truly matters in the end. The loving fairy transforms him : Instead of only a puppet he now deserves to be a boy, a real human being. Going through life’s trials and tribulations we can learn to become the humans we were meant to be. For more info go to: taichi4modesto.com or call (209)572-4518
