EDITOR’S
Greetings Modesto Fans! 1.2.3.O’Clock 4 O’clock Rock..
CONTENTS Caption: Congrats to All Ages Abbey Murphy on her IB Graduation from Modesto High. Soon she will be turning her All Ages Pages to another amazing Girl Scout when she goes off to UC Berkeley in the fall
Wow, what a way to start a song, or even better yet a movie. A movie that would change the way movies were made, change the way music would be used in a movie and change forever what Modesto California means to people around the world. Most communities have to invent something that they are known for that they can celebrate. Tourism is a huge benefit to any community and to get tourism dollars, you have to want them. You have to tell the world about who you are and why they should visit. Modesto is the home of American Graffiti. We are famous for this around the world and our Graffiti Summer celebrations are attracting people from around the world. Where are the billboards on Highway 99? Over two years ago I started working on the Modesto Historic Cruise Route and partnered up with the city of Modesto and some amazing companies in town that believed that we need to tell our historic story and why George Lucas made a movie about Modesto. Now today, the original streets where Modesto used to cruise are now “the Modesto Historic Cruise Route” and there are 25 historic and educational markers on this interesting walking tour and now, we are about to unveil the “Legends of the Cruise” Walk of Fame. ModestoView is here, making a difference and helping create a positive Modesto and like the legendary carhops, “Serving Civic Pride Daily” We are proud to be making things happen and changing our future. But this is not all. Not only are we the Home of American Graffiti, we are also the home of Classic Street Rod with Hometown Hero Gene Winfield, Modesto High class of ’45, that invented many of the classic hotrods we see today and influenced todays designers. Is it coincidence that American Graffiti started off with a Rockabilly song? If you read our May issue, you also learned that Modesto is the birthplace of Rockabilly since Fred Maddox started slappin his bass in 1937 and Rockabilly is the rocking foundation of Rock and Roll. You need to go see Lee Rocker on the 21st at the State and then our Boogie Woogie Street Party on the 22nd, free to all on J St to experience Rockabilly. Just try not to dance. Can you believe much amazing history is here in Modesto, not to mention Jeremy Renner, Tim Olyphant, Grandaddy and other global favorites. But ModestoView doesn’t stop there, we have an amazing Architectural history and we welcome a new addition to the ViewCrew. Bob Barzan, founder of the Modesto Art Museum will be doing a monthly ArchitectureView column showcasing our stellar design history and offerings. Stay tuned for some exciting projects. There are classic buildings here designed by classic architects. We now celebrate our graduates of 2013 and hopefully we have all done our jobs so that they are ready to go out and change the world. Just maybe we will all work together here to create a city where they want to return to after college. It is up to us. Thank you to the wonderful writers in the ViewCrew for creating cultural events in town and sharing what they do with our readers. We thank our advertisers so that we are able to design, print and distribute the awesome ModestoView Magazine. There is nothing like it connecting our community in a 100% positive way and there is nothing like you, our 100% awesome readers.

On the cover: Resident photographic wizard Michael J Mangano has one again created a new piece of Modesto history artwork. We bring the spirit of American Graffiti alive with our own local twist as Burge’s comes to life with Abbey Murphy as the famous carhop. It is so great to have this local talent to keep history alive. Special note from Toni Burgeno Escamilla “Joe Burgeno” is my father who owned the 59 Corvette. He passed away Feb 16, 2012. He left the car to my mother and his children. He worked for Best Chevrolet in Modesto for 20+ years as a body and fender mechanic. He was a member of the Modesto Corvette Club for many years and participated in the Graffiti parade and car shows. He loved showing his car which was his pride and joy. He won many trophies. He made many friends during this time and always would get excited when it came to Graffiti in Modesto. It was his favorite time of year. So we (his children) continue his passion and participated in last years Graffiti and look forward to this coming year.
Thanks so much Chris Murphy Founder and Publisher, ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

Yoda Likes Screeching Tires
by Ruben J. Porras
I’m not totally sure why but I can’t seem to get this article done this month. I never struggle with it like this. I have been back and forth to coffee shops where I am usually very productive but all I seem to end up with is one heck of a caffeine buzz. I bought some awesome new headphones yesterday and right now they are throbbing in my ears. Maybe that will help. I’d love to get this out in one shot. All you have to do is look at the cover of this issue and you will realize that we are celebrating the return of screeching tires and shiny chrome to Modesto. Soon, thousands of folks will pour into our city to showcase their metallic passions and they will bring with them thousands of folks that have mastered the art of saying things like, “Woah! That one there looks like it could be in a movie! I bet it cost a million dollars to build!” Graffiti Summer is always a blast and you’ve probably heard that this year will be one of the most special yet for a particular reason. A certain Ewok and Yoda creator will be in town for the festivities. That will be pretty cool. Does that mean that the force will be with us? My personal little world is continuing to change as the days pass. You might have noticed that I am no longer going by the pen name “ModestoFamous.” It was time for me to just be me. I used that name as a way to get out of the house when health issues were particularly bad. It made me feel like I could be someone other than a man dealing with Cancer and other issues. It was my comfort blanket. I don’t regret using the name or changing it at all. It was also connected in a way to a particular local bee-themed newspaper and now that they are not considered to be much of a community-focused company, I didn’t want any association with them. I don’t need big companies or big dollars. I need good local people, small business and the occasional killer taco truck burrito. My life is pretty simple. Take some advice from me - Get out and explore Modesto this month. Even if you
don’t have a love for cars and Luke Skywalker, there are plenty of things for you to do. You’ll be happy. MoBand will be back at Graceada Park every Thursday, State Theatre will have a tribute to Johnny Cash on June 7th and a tribute to Michael Jackson on June 28th and the Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market will be dishing out their organic goodies every Thursday and Saturday. Check out our calendar at modestoview.com for a constantly-updated look at what’s happening about town. You know my history folks – I’m happy
to be anywhere. I’m happy to be alive. I’m especially happy to be here with you in a place where people laugh and sing and help their neighbors. Life is good in Modesto, USA. Embrace it and get lost in it. Have a great June. Enjoy the vroom! I took photographs included this month in and around Patterson. There are some really beautiful areas very close to Modesto. Grab a camera and hit the road. Follow me on Twitter at twitter.com/ rubenwriter or email me anytime at r.porras@me.com.

Graffiti Summer Shows by Jim Christiansen The May Art Walk started with guitars on the street. Eli Allsup and friends playing on Eleventh Street sidewalk at Tresetti’s as an unannounced warm up for strolling minstrels, Blue Monday’s Eric Benson with pawn shop guitar, Modesto View publisher Chris Murphy in retro striped shirt, with Gary Nelson and guitars roaming the downtown avenues. Expect to see them again in June, as Modesto rolls into Graffiti Summer events schedule. This month, expect rolling works of art, as the classic cars go by, and various events take up the roadway and sidewalk displays pop up. Compare the car club vehicles to the recent downtown murals. The Home of American Graffiti poster contest has its student-generated work in the windows at Tenth and I Street. The Blues and Rockabilly Street Faire will feature art on June 22, and I expect to see more in our annual celebration of mid 20th Century Modesto nostalgia. Matthew Olyphant did a work based on a Yosemite Avenue Snow-White drive in, on display at Modesto Convention and Visitors bureau offices, and available as a tee shirt design, to support the upkeep of the historic cruise route kiosks and signage. My favorite stop for May art walk, at the Downtown Improvement District office, where artist Charles Jeffrey Newberry had a large part of his portfolio out on display for show and for sale, alongside the great collection of DID framed posters. I bought one of his drawings while there. Always pays to look for these surprise shows during Art Walk. June continues the second half of the two regional Spring Shows in Modesto and Turlock. The People’s Choice Award was awarded to Tony Pooler over at the Mistlin Gallery for the last of the awards in the Central California Art Association 60th annual Spring Show. Joan Cardoza’s pastel work “The Monk” won the Best of Show award. 64 artists and 143 works in four juried categories comprise this annual exhibit, which will be on display through June 13. Black and White art celebrated

Music in the Bowl for MoBand! in Turlock’s Carnegie Arts Center’s Best of Show selection of an ink drawing by Milt Bullard. That show will run through June 30. Spring Show entries in both locations are for sale. Mid-month, Mistlin Gallery will open its CCAA member’s Summer Splash show, which will be featured during the June Art Walk. Mistlin’s shows change about every six to seven weeks, and its Gift Box art jewelry and small works, and ceramics displays you see in the glass cases, are updated monthly. All the art in the gallery is produced by local artists, and is available for purchase, and your patronage helps support the nonprofit art association. Summer classes have started at Mistlin, many

of them arranged with City of Modesto Parks and Recreation for kids. Summer Art Camps and classes are also in session at nearby Chartreuse Muse. For June Art Walk, I will be the featured artist at Crow Trading. Artists looking to show their work at Art Walk have missed applying to this central location the past two months. If you want a spot to feature your work, just pick up an Art Walk map, and see if there is an opening to show at any of the regular spots. www.modestoartwalk. com Another opportunity is the Kiwanis’s sponsored downtown Fourth of July Parade and farmers Market. See their link at www.modestojulyparade.com for more information and applications.
On Friday June 28, the City of Modesto’s Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department and MoBand will be once again team up to present, “A Night at the Bowl” in Mancini Bowl. Wine tastings from local wineries, as well as food and beer sampling from local pubs and restaurants and music from Ernie Bucio Little Big Band and local classic rock band Third Party. Proceeds from this event will be split between MoBand and the City of Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department. Tix are $35 available at 10th St Place or from a MoBand Board member or at the event. Credit cards will be accepted.

Daytime Drinking at Vieira’s Lounge
Photos by Philip Johnson
Daytime drinking can be a beautiful or terrible thing depending on the following stipulations: First, you should not have a reason to be drinking all day. Got fired? Got broken up with? Got positive test results? No daytime drinking for you. Go do responsible things. Second, you should have absolutely nothing planned for the entire day. If you do, it should be cancelled. You’re not going to make it; it’s not going to happen. Cancellations should be done predrinking to avoid liability. Third, it is important not to abbreviate daytime drinking into ‘DD’ as not to confuse others around you when announce you’re ‘DDing’ today. Fourth, location, location, location. You’ll need someplace with a full bar, reasonably priced alcohol, an awesome bartender, and preferably lacking windows (to engage the Las Vegas-effect). I’m a bit embarrassed it’s taken me this long to write about Vieira’s as I have been going there pretty regularly since I hit drinking age, and because they’re a bit of a Modesto bar staple. As far as daytime drinking goes, Vieira’s has a full bar, including a collection of bottled IPA’s, probably the best priced drinks in town, big booths, the lovely Michelle Borges wielding bottles behind the bar, and is completely void of windows. Do we understand each other here? Prime DDing location, people. This family-owned establishment also sports pool tables, darts, and is conveniently attached to Bauer’s late-night restaurant (which is, I kid you not, amazing), just in case you make it all day and need to eat something afterwards. Ms. Michelle, whose hobbies include shoot-

ing guns, bowling, and reading, is a Vieira’s fixture and a shot-pouring machine. She and I discussed the varied day-to-night phases of the Vieira’s clientele, the reemergence of old-school cocktails in relation to the popularity of Mad Men, the versatility of espresso vodka, and a mutual love of Vieira’s. Phil was too invested in enjoying a big plate of Bauer’s pulled-pork sliders to contribute to the conversation. Do not feel obligated to limit your Vieira’s outings exclusively to daytime drinking; they also have a popular night scene as well. Plus, it would be awkward if you were there daytime drinking while I was there daytime drinking…. we’d have to promise to cover each other’s stories. And I’m sure if we asked nicely Michelle would agree to be our alibi. Vieira’s signature drink is undoubtedly their $7 pitchers of PBR, but since they may be difficult to replicate at home for us kegless kids, Michelle kindly provided us with three alternatives: Vieira’s Lounge 1700 McHenry Ave., Modesto 209.571.3900
Tequila Drop:
-Combine Sweet & Sour, fresh lemon juice, and your choice of tequila in a shaker -Shake and strain into a sugar-rimmed shot glass Morphine Drip: -Pour 1Ž2 Butterscotch Schnapps and 1Ž2 Amaretto in a shot glass. -Add in a splash of Bacardi 151 -Expert level: Light it on fire! I shouldn’t have to remind you to use caution, and blow out the damn fire before you consume it.
House-made Bloody Mary
(Michelle’s secret ingredient not included) -Combine 2 oz. vodka, 3 oz. tomato juice. Add a dash of Worcestershire, Tabasco, horseradish, celery salt, and black pepper, and pour over a highball with ice. -Garnish as you see fit. Yes, more vodka counts as a garnish.

ith American Graffiti running rampant throughout Modesto as the excitement builds as George Lucas will be the Grand Marshall in this year’s parade, I thought it fitting to visit our local drive-ins and see what smells so dang good and what’s shakin’! Established in 1957 A & W Root Beer Drive-In located at 1404 G St. was one of the inspirations for the1973 movie American Graffiti. Cruisers would meet here for burgers, fries, floats, and milkshakes before heading to McHenry for a night of cruising. Johnny and Tammy Matthews have been the proud owners for the past 13 years. The restaurant still operates in the same premise of years past, right down to the food server on roller skates! Yes, Jessica Briseno, at the mega energized age of 23 has been working in roller skates for the past 6 years and has been promoted to shift manager. Jessica’s favorite menu item is the Papa Burger! I’d call it the Gi-normous Papa Burger as its size isn’t for just any Papa to handle. For me, I totally went for the hand-crafted root beer float to wash down my tasty fries and instantly had a Dana~licious moment! A special note of gratitude to Dub and Bonnie Kyle for meeting me at the A & W in their 1946 Mercury, the car George Lucas will be riding in as Grand Marshal in the parade. The Kyle’s Mercury is a lush apricot color with swirl designs that make this classic a real beauty. Don Woods, president of Modesto’s Chevy Car Club also was there with several friends showcasing their mint condition classic cars! My daughters, Amanda and Scarlett, and friend Giselle were impressed and thrilled to be a part of this cool photo shoot! Thank you everyone! Next stop Sno-white Drive In. Located at 1841 Yosemite Blvd. Modesto. It was just like out of a classic movie when I pulled up on a Saturday night. I parked under the original Sno-white Drive In neon sign from the 60’s; there it was, a shiny red 1965 Chevy Super Sport Impala low-rider! This little roadside drive in was pretty busy, but I had to meet the owner of this classic car!

Graffiti Summer
Right there on the patio was Sonny, Gloria, and son Trent Quisol out for burgers. Trent loved the chili burger! Yes, I interrupted their family meal as I was excited to learn more about their car and the Modesto Chapter Impalas Car Club, also on Facebook. Sonny happens to be 1 of the 4 founders of the Impalas Car Club and is actively involved in helping the community. The car club members and their families do some amazing things throughout the year for charity. They don’t just drive their cars, they actually do backpack drives, turkey drives, and toy drives, too! Way to go! Adel Asumari has been the Sno-white owner and hands on 7 days a week running this traditional drive in for over 10 years. He loves it! This small place sure does boast a big menu. From breakfast burritos, burgers, Philly cheese steaks, corn dogs, to the sweeter side of shakes, floats, frosties, sundaes, and ice cream specialties! Love that they also make the classics like malts and banana boats! After visiting with some of the patrons it was clear the Knockout Burger was the most popular! Still full from my last stop, I know you will find me back to sample on all that looked and smelled Dana~licious! I didn’t ask them the signature Modesto View question Beatles or Stones, but I’m sure as they all love was it classic, they would have said both!

This is a new monthly column
Building a Better Modesto By Bob Barzan
The Modesto Art Museum is excited to announce that ArtPlace America has given the museum a grant of $101,600 for Building a Better Modesto. The cutting edge program was chosen from over 1,200 applications nation-wide as an exceptional example of creative placemaking - using local assets to build public spaces that are attractive and that promote community well-being. Building a Better Modesto is the museum’s response to the city’s ranking as one of the least livable in the country. After studying the reasons for our poor showing, we decided that the Modesto Art Museum could not continue with business as usual. We reflected on what role an art museum should have in Modesto and how we as a nonprofit community organization could make a difference in the quality of life here particularly through the arts. Our program uses public art, architec-
ture, landscape, and urban design to acknowledge the city’s unique assets, change the experience and perceptions of downtown Modesto, and generate action toward a more livable city. What can you expect to see over the next several months that will make a difference for you and our city? In the coming months you will see the world premiere of a movie about Modesto’s architectural heritage; the organization of Modesto Heritage, the new historic preservation group; an expansion of the Modesto International Architecture Festival; new public art on the streets of the Modesto Design District; and a whole schedule of fun events, talks, tours, movies, and workshops.
As a catalyst for creativity in the community, Modesto Art Museum has no permanent location and so no infrastructure to support. This allows us to use the whole city as our “collection” and to dedicate all of the grant funds to the program. Our board president, Barrett Lipomi sums it up well when he says, “This is an amazing opportunity for the museum to have a lasting impact in our community! The support from ArtPlace will allow us to expand our programming and take a huge step towards building a better Modesto.” I look forward to sharing more about our exciting work for Modesto in future editions of Modesto View. Bob Barzan, Executive Director, Modesto Art Museum

Steve and Linda Pedego -
Keeping the American Graffiti Torch burning since ‘62
by Chris Murphy

here were you in ’62? So asked the movie poster for George Lucas’ film American Graffiti. If you lived in Modesto during the 50s and the early 60s, you knew exactly where you were in ’62. Steve and Linda Pedego have a very special ModestoView. Steve, 1961 graduate of Modesto High School, is married to Linda Elliot, Downey High Songleader class of 1962 and classmate of George’s since grade school. Through all of these years, Steve and Linda have kept the torch of American Graffiti burning, even the movie, through thick and thin. They have a great wealth of information about this time, all captured in their memorabilia, photos, movies and the active role in keeping the Graffiti Spirit alive. Today, Linda is a cancer survivor and Steve, not only kept the Modesto High reunions going, also made sure that the Downey reunions happened, including the major milestones that included return visits from George Lucas. Let’s meet these amazing “Champions of American Graffiti” Steve works for California Mortgage and enjoys his other full time job of keeping the American Graffiti torch burning bright here in Modesto USA and Linda is active in many local organizations including the Modesto Garden Club. Let’s meet Steve and Linda. ModestoView: Was growing up in Modesto during the 50s as good as you remember it? Steve and Linda: Yes, it was safe and carefree. We knew all of our neighbors, never locked our doors, or closed our windows in the summer. Downtown at Christmas was like a Norman Rockwell Painting. Understanding the Art of the Rat Rod by Ruben J. Porras
You have no doubt seen the pristine classic cars that are often the focus of Graffiti Summer and so many other automobile events. Their owners take great care to gently polish every piece of chrome and glass on each car and they make sure that nothing is out of place. Rat Rods are not those cars. Rats Rods are often covered in rust, patina, peeled paint and grease. They often reek of oil and gas and they are almost always surrounded by confused car buffs that can’t understand how they can even get anywhere without falling apart. A few special car builders in the world focus almost solely on Rat Rods and they do so for a variety of reasons that may be hard for traditionalists to understand. I had the chance to connect with worldclass hot rod builder Aaron Hagar in an effort to better understand the Rat Rod phenomenon. Hagar and his team are known as some of the prolific custom car builders in the world. You might be surprised by some of Hagar’s responses. You’ll certainly be impressed with his sense of nostalgia and dedication to his craft.
RP: So, what’s the deal with all these rusty contraptions that look like they’re held together with glue and tape? What makes them special? Why do you build them? AH: Lol, that’s funny. You know, for me it is about preserving and resurrecting old metal. There is something to say about owning and preserving something that has been around far longer than yourself. Driving an old antique down the highway makes people smile and reminds us of a different time in the world of man. I love the patina and reuse of old materials that have a distinguished quality to them. It takes the phrase “they don’t make them like they used to” and puts a wicked spin on it. I build them because I truly love them. They are unique, tasteful, rolling edgy antique works of art no matter how well you build them, even a little dangerous! RP: How long have you been building custom cars? I know that you’re father is the legendary musician Sammy Haggar and I know he ‘can’t drive 55.’ Were you raised surrounded by cars and influenced by his love of speed?
For more Modesto info: www.modestoview.com
AH: I have been building cars since I was a teenager. My first car was an old car. Although I didn’t have the skill set I do now, I was always tinkering with it. Repairing and learning from error. My father and my uncle Bucky were my childhood influences. Dad was the exotic car collector. Some American muscle of course, but Ferrari’s, Porsche’s and such were his passion. I liked the quirky. The Alfa’s, the Citroen’s and such of the world. To where my Uncle Bucky was all American muscle. He did have a passion for mini coopers and Norton’s as well. He was basically a total gear head. I would say I am more like my uncle when it comes to cars than my father. I have never really had the resources to collect such prestigious cars as my father. But I have learned to build and restore by my own hand and that has yielded some interesting cars in my collection. Sorry, I meant scars..... Lol. Of course I like them fast. But I prefer the burnout to the
top end of things. But I love to negotiate a great corner as well. I do love the race track. I get to play once and awhile. And I savor every minute. RP: What is the craziest thing that you have done with a Rat Rod? What strange materials or ideas have come together to finish a project? AH: It is always some crazy idea, and exercise in complete insipidity. Usually spawned by “you know what would be a crazy fun idea?” and as far as materials nearly anything goes! As I mentioned I like to reuse vintage and antique materials. But many years of picking and “collecting” have amassed a wonderful plethora of fun trinkets to inspire and create from. Sometimes it’s the sheer oddity of a single item that will set great things in motion. As to “finishing” a project? Ah hell man, is it EVER done?

KFIV
is Live!
Back in the days of the cruise, there was only one radio station that played the rock and roll hits. KFIV 1360 AM was for many the soundtrack of our lives. Sometimes it was even broadcast live from Burge’s Drive in a 9th and O Streets. American Graffiti was the first movie that was created around a selection of popular music not written for a movie. These songs were integral to the script and securing the rights to the songs consumed 10% of his $750,000 budget. This was the soundtrack of a generation and the Modesto cruisers in the late 50s and early 60s shared the same set of songs. Beginning in 1953, rock and roll was first heard on the Modesto airwaves on KBOX. As the kids in Modesto Dragged 10th, 1360 KFIV would play the songs of the day and since there was only one rock station, everyone shared the same music. The song dedications came from Dwight Case at Burge’s and the nights were filled with the legendary doo-wop, rockabilly and rock and roll. This year, classic rock and roll radio is back with the legendary DJs: Bob DeLeon, Kenny Roberts, Derek Waring, John Chappell and more! KFIV will begin playing those Solid Gold Hits on Friday, June 7th, from six pm to midnight, and on Saturday, June 8th from noon to midnight, and on Sunday June 9th from noon to six pm. Who knows, there may even be a dedication or two, or three.

Where it all started. Burge’s Drive in was the place that started it all. The unique round drive-in was a refreshing motorist beacon along highway 99 in years after the end of the war, when car travel became popular. But in the evenings, Burge’s became a place for the youth of Modesto to hang out. The classes of ’47 to ’67 made the weekend evenings a happening place. Other drive-in such as Al’s and Felix’s on McHenry, A&W on 14th, Web’s, Chick’s, Warren’s, Rick’s all had their part in history, but Burge’s on Highway 99 was the one that kicked it off. ModestoView readers get an exclusive look of never before seen Burge’s photos thanks to the personal photo collection of Tony Ramirez, son of long time Burge’s carhop, Gerry Ramirez. Both of Tony’s parents worked at Burge’s. “It was a special time” Tony says, ”I had the most interesting childhood and my parents were amazing. The friends and family from those days were a special part of my life” Ed Burge worked at Eddie’s Drive in in downtown Modesto and finally got the chance to open his own place and created the unique circular restaurant that served a full menu, staffed by carhops and a friendly food team. Gerry and Tony Ramirez were there from day one. Gerry has been immortalized in the few photos that exist of Burge’s. Tony was a soda jerk at Burge’s and kept the place moving fast and satisfying hungry customers. This carhops hustled and had to juggle cars stacked 3-5 deep. Gerry was on the job from the day Burge’s opened until the day it closed in 1967. Fortunately, the family took pictures of their friends and family that are presented here. Chef Joe Gomez would later cook at Carmens, and his popular recipes live on today at Marcella’s Restaurant. George Lucas Cruises Again! On June 7, 2013, George Lucas will cruise 10th Street in Modesto USA for the first time in maybe 51 years. The streets and the city that inspired the 1973 groundbreaking film American Graffiti will again be the place where more memories will be made as the citizens of Modesto get to pay tribute to one of our hometown heroes. Celebrating George Lucas gives our city a sense of civic pride and in a way, tells our own story. Our history is something we can be proud of and is a story we need to tell around the world, just like George Lucas did. We catch up with George as he begins his next chapter of storytelling. ModestoView: How does it feel to be home again? George Lucas: It always feels wonderful to visit your hometown where you grew up and had so many good times. My family still lives here and it’s always good to visit old friends. MV Why did you do a movie about cruising? GL For most filmmakers, if you are a writer and a director, you make movies about the things you know about. Growing up in Modesto, I spent many years cruising 10th St and I was enamored with the experience and so that is how the movie American Graffiti came to be. MV: When you made the movie, did you think it would have such a ling lasting effect in this area? GL: Well actually I didn’t. By the time I made the movie, cruising was a thing of the past and I wanted to document what it was like to grow up in a small town with all its various rituals that are unique to the customs of cruising. MV: Why do you think the film was so successful? GL: American Graffiti in terms of a an idea of moving out of my more abstract love of films, gave me a chance to do something that was a comedy, something that was an interesting document about a phenomenon in American, cruising, and in the end started my career ‘cause it was the first really successful movie I’ve ever had. MV: What is your fondest memory of Modesto and what do you think of its growth? GL: Cruising 10th Street. It was like a nightly party, always full of excitement and possibility. I think Modesto’s growth is a natural part of aging and that is a good thing Without growth, you atrophy and disappear. We thank George Lucas for making a movie about our city that inspires us to research and revisit our history and to use it as a guide to make us a better city for the future. Cash Prophets - Interview by Jennifer Allsup
In regards to this interview, I was listen-
ing to a Maddox Brothers and Rose record and at the end of the record Johnny Cash said this about Rose Maddox. “When she started playing my shows, I found her to be the most fascinating, exciting performer I had ever seen in my life. She was a total performer, she captivated her audience, she held them in the palm of her hand and made them do whatever she wanted them to do. The songs that she sang where classics. I loved the way she kinda sang and danced at the same time. I thought there was and still think that there would never be another women that could outperform Rose Maddox, She is an American classic.” This inspired me to talk to a group that is coming to Modesto very soon. The Cash Prophets ~ A tribute to infamous talented Johnny Cash –Coming soon to Modesto. The Cash Prophets began in 2004 and band members are Booby Dickson Sr, rhythm guitar and vocals, Bobby Dickson Jr, lead guitar and Nate Dickson Stand up Bass, and the newest member Robert Crostwaithe, stand up percussionist. I caught up with Bobby Dickson Sr and he had this to say. “The passion for doing Johnny Cash came from truth, the honesty between good and evil that he made me feel in his words and his life. It felt like he had already lived my life. My biggest inspiration from music is the way it touches peoples soul and makes you happy, sad or just plain comfortable.” MV: If you could go back in time, What would you do differently? BD: Nothing at all different because it could alter my life experiences and family and I like where I am at. I couldn’t imagine not seeing my children’s eyes. MV: Are you familiar with Rose Maddox? The History of Rock’N’Roll
Chris Murphy’s Publisher Note: Modesto is the birthplace of Rockabilly and is the ‘Root’ that put the “Rock” in Rock and Roll. We are continuing our music history series and this month we bring Rockabilly to life at the Modesto Boogie Woogie Rock’n Roll’n Music & Art Dance Party, June 22, 4 -10 pm on J Street right in the middle of Graffiti Summer. This is a free family event thanks to our local sponsors. You have to experience Rockabilly to understand how amazing our history is. Since 1937, Modesto is where it all started with the slappin bass sounds of Fred Maddox. Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats has taken the Big Slappin bass to the top with the hits of the Stray Cats and keeps Rockabilly alive today along with Jimbo of the Reverend Horton Heat and our very own Tony T & his Rockin’ Cats, the Pendletons and of course the MoFo Party Band and so many others. Lee Rocker will rockin’ the State Theatre on June 21, and the Boogie Woogie Party is the next day at 4pm. You need to experience this music. Rockabilly is our heritage and the music keeps getting better for the future. Look to see monthly Rockabilly Showcases at Hero’s, more Swing Dance lessons and hopefully more support from the City of Modesto to celebrate our amazing, legendary and historic music heritage. If you have comments, ideas, historical info about the Maddox Family, please let me know so we can get our history archives together. chrism@modestoview.com

MV: What’s your favorite album by another artist ? BD: Favorite album - ha ha ha is this a trick question??? That is a very hard question, because I listen to everything from Jump Jive to Gothic, metal to jazz, classic country to R&B, gospel to soul, blue grass to punk rock. These all influence me. Some of my favorite artista are Nick Cave, Waylon Jennings, Hank 3 and a truckload of unsigned, unheard of artists. MV: What is the first song you can remember hearing that drove you to play music? BD: First song to drive me to play music, is
Kenny Rogers,” Ruby don’t take your love to town”, when I was around 10. If you can find a Rose Maddox album or cd....I love the album, “$35 and a Dream” It tells you a short story about The Maddox family and their travels and their musical beginnings in Modesto Ca. Please, stay tuned for some more Rock N Roll history and keep your eyes and ears wide open for some Rockabilly show cases this summer. See you all real soon ! Smiles, Jennifer Allsup 209-214-0137

The Summer Season
by Earl Matthews
Hello everyone. Spring is in full swing and we are all staring down the barrel at the Summer season, which for me means the busy season. I am happy to say this month is going to be even better than the last. In fact I have so much going on (25 events scheduled for June as this article goes to press) that I am only going to hit the highlights as to not make this too confusing. On June 2nd at Hero’s I am partnering with Anthony Rossi for a night of electronic music featuring the band YOU from Brooklyn, NY, Black Jeans from San Francisco and Anthony’s band, Tuxedo Gleam from right here in good old Modesto. On June 6th we will be hosting the final Ramble at Cafe Deva. It has be a great run for us and we even won a Modesto Area Music Award. The last show will feature Christine McGrew, Rob Hill Band, Lovecore Singing Telegrams and the Poor-
house Millionaires. Please come out and help us put this baby to bed. June 15th is our second local show at the State Theatre. The lineup includes Stop Motion Poetry, Kid Mud and Solar Powered People. I am very excited about this show and I hope that everyone who wants to enjoy it can get in. The last one sold out so make sure to get your tickets early, $12 in advance, you can’t beat that. On June 28th at Hero’s, Derek Rolando and the Desert Chant, featuring members of Santana, will take the stage. Thats right, Santana! Tony Lindsay, the band’s current singer will be performing. This show is going to be amazing. Tell anyone you know who is into Latin Rock, percussion, or just likes to dance, that they should not miss this show. $15 in advance or $20 at the door. As always, Sunday’s Breakfast with the Mil-

Happy Summer! Happy

Summer Everyone! School is out and it’s time to go out and enjoy all the great things Modesto has in store for this year. Okay, we all know Star Wars and we know George Lucas, but did you guys know that’s he’s FROM Modesto. Yeah, his movie American Graffiti was directly inspired by the events of his childhood! But that’s not all! On June 7th, George Lucas will be BACK in Modesto as the Grand Marshall of the parade in Downtown Modesto. This is truly a historic and amazing event so make sure you check out all the happenings this June. Whether you’re a girl or a boy, everyone can enjoy the aspects of Graffiti Summer. Boys love the cars and girls love them too (and the cute vintage dresses and handsome boys!) and there are so many

I can feel it!

Thanks to the Modesto Kiwanis Club for keeping the 4th of July Parade a big part of Modesto history. Bring your family and friends downtown and celebrate the USA the Modesto way. You can enter the parade until June 28 http:// www.modestojulyparade.com/ Celebrate Flag Day There will be a Flag Day Ceremony at the Modesto Elks Lodge. This will be a patriotic presentation to honor our nation’s flag. Presentation is free to the public, dinner is available following for Elk members and guests. Your Music Online by Javier Lopez For the up and coming artist or producers, having your music heard globally has not been more accessible than the market that we have today. For the experienced, distributing your music is costly and not an easy task.10 years ago the industry was a much more closed market. In today’s market with the right resources, you may have your music downloaded across the world on many outlets. Online distributors are what we are referring to today. Distribute your album online or a single online. Today we have many types of streaming sites, Download sites, in which the consumer downloads their music legally. Imagine reaching new fans and watch your account sales increase, depending on your marketing. As long as you have the rights to the original work or ”music”. You can be a part of the flowing talent hitting the online market. There are also many who still depend solely on hard copies to reach their fans. You have a choice. Somewhere on planet earth is an ambitious soul searching to be heard. Playing on the street corner performing their art, recording their latest. To have your voice heard on the new platform, be prepared, there are fees associated with online distributors, but there are many options. I suggest you do your research on the sites you choose to distribute on. Once you are signed up and ready to go, the first question you may have is “were do I sign up?” I will give you two options. I have worked with both theses companies before. There are pros and cons. CD baby is the veteran of online distribution and in the early days you would call the owners directly. No joke. The fees are decent and your music will be online to download off iTunes in a matter of 30 days. On this site you keep your rights, pay a fee per sale and a percentage of your downloads is paid directly to you, direct deposit or check. The cost is a one time fee of $39 per single or $49.99 per album. They have always kept up with payments and there service is very good. As you read more on there polices and marketing, you will

grasp a better concept of online sales. Do not take short cuts, unless you like getting short-changed. On the other hand there is tunecore,(tunecore.com) they have been on the market for a few years, they operate on a different platform. They also get your music heard on iTunes and many more sites. Their services are faster and their basic fees are lower, with the exception they require every year $29.99 per album and $9.99 per single. So there you have two options to get started to get your music heard. Do us all a favor and take pride in the quality of music you publish and the artwork you represent your self with. Remember to stay up to date on all Tru Luv article interviews and online video interviews and on our website truluvmusic.com This is the Urban.

So if you’ve ever wondered what a World Class Champion Tri-Athlete looks like, let me give you a hint. He’s the tall goodlooking fellow on the left in the photo here. I first became aware of Andy Potts back in 2009 at The Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. Since then, I have been following Andy’s Superhero-like fitness abilities in Triathlons. Modesto View friends, as long as I can remember I’ve always believed that each person in this world has a God given talent and many of Andy’s competitors didn’t have to give it a second thought when it came to recognizing Andy’s. In fact, just the mere sight of his presence at a Triathlon is enough to get his competitor’s nerves quivering. Yes, Andy Potts is a world-renowned known Professional TriAthlete and when its race time, he never disappoints his sponsors. I hooked up with Andy just recently to get his insight here for our Modesto View Fit View Readers. I, like many Tri-Athletes
have always been interested in knowing what helps makes Andy go so fast on race day. So with that being said, I stated out with my biggest question I’ve often had issues with and that would be his nutrition the night before and the morning of race day. Surprisingly, I learned Andy keeps it simple. Meaning no gimmicks or rituals its just pizza for a 6PM dinner, but not too much, and a Blueberry Muffin on race

morning. According to Andy, he’s a Muffin Man! Muffins are packed with calories and can be easily stored away in your bag. But during an IRONMAN Triathlon, Andy relies on his Nutritional Sponsor AP Racing Power Bar. Thanks to Power Par, Andy not only took the overall win at this year’s 70.3 Oceanside IRONMAN, but also because of his detailed nutrition plan during the race, he didn’t have to stop at any of the nutrition stops. The man just kept going. If you too would like to find out more about what keeps Andy Potts ahead of the game, join me and all of Andy’s fourteen thousand plus friends on his facebook page. Andy keeps us motivated as well as shares many of his training workouts for us to enjoy in our own quest to be better Tri-Athletes. You can friend him at www. facebook.com/AndyPottsRacing For questions, Athletes or upcoming Fitness Events you would like me to know about, please email me at thequakedj@hotmail.com or www.facebook.com/QuakeFitness Get Andy Pott’s workout at ModestoVIew.com

Pro Wrestling in Modesto and the Legend of Bobby Hart by Mike Vanek
T
his month I will not be writing about Heavy Metal. I will be writing about something I love very much that has a very deep history in Modesto. It’s called Professional Wrestling and I am obsessed with it. Pro Wrestling has a grand history here in Modesto over the years and this month, I’d like to shed a little light on Modesto’s Wrestling past and present. In the 70’s Roy Shires “Big Time Wrestling” a territory of the NWA which was the National Wrestling Alliance and had territory’s all around the United States. BTW held regular Wrestling matches at City Arena located on 9th Street (Just before the 9th St. Bridge. Coming into Modesto from the Ceres side of the bridge you can see an old 7up mural on its wall.) These matches Featured legends such as Rocky Johnson (The Rock’s Dad) Super Star Billy Graham ( Former WWE Champ), The Crippler Ray Stevens and Pat Patterson (WWE HOF’er) and Modesto was a regular part of the BTW circuit and the BTW had a Regular show on Ch 40 broadcast out of Sacramento until the company stopped production in 1979. In the Mid to late 80’s The World Wrestling Federation would stop in Modesto at local High School Gyms. I actually saw 2 of these shows, one at Davis and one at Downey and I heard there was one at Modesto High where Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior and the Super Stars of the 80’s were all featured. Now-a-days, wrestling has once again settled here in Modesto. In 2009 Modesto based Pro Wrestler Bobby Hart started his own company right here in Mo Town “I was looking to bring something different to Nor Cal wrestling, I wanted to bring more of a Japanese style of Wrestling to
24
Graffiti Summer
Nor Cal” said Bobby in a recent conversation. So Bobby started PRO WRESTLING BUSHIDO in December of 2009 and since then PWB has become a staple of the Nor Cal Indie Wrestling circuit, not only holding Wrestling shows here in Modesto but in Stockton and other locations all over Nor-Cal and they have built alliances with Supreme Pro Wrestling in Sacramento and Fighting Spirit Pro Wrestling Based in Merced. Since 2009 BPW has hosted dozens of awesome shows featuring wrestlers from all over the world including Former and Current WWE, WCW, ECW, ROH, and TNA Wrestlers Such as Gangrel, Christopher Daniels, Paul London, Jerry Lynn, Loki and many more!! PWB has also opened a wrestling school where the future of Modesto Wrestling can train and hone their craft. PWB Students Daniel Torch & Savannah Riley have gone on to not only wrestle all across California but nationally as well, plus PWB does events like The Nor Cal Wrestling Hall of Fame where people that opened the doors for Nor-Cal Pro Wrestling have been honored. The X-Fest Battle Royal every year at X-Fest is where the X-Fest Championship is defended. This is a great local company upholding a great legacy of Pro Wrestling in Modesto and is great family entertainment as I proudly take my son to PWB shows!! Please check out “ProWrestling Bushido” on facebook and Support Local Independent Pro Wrestling!! That’s all for me This Month!! As always “KEEP ONE FOOT IN THE GUTTER AND ONE FIST IN THE GOLD” Mike Vanek

Farmer’s Markets are in Full Gear
It is Apricot and Nectarine season. Last month, we had the most delicious asparagus and now the fruit gets sweeter! Our local farmers markets are an absolute treasure and will help you stay fit and trip by eating fresh and tasty. This handy list of local certified farmer’s market locations will help you stay in the groove. Remember to take your reusable bags and ride your bike to the market when you can. Modesto- Count on a long list of tasty fruits and veggies, nifty crafts, hot food vendors and more! Don’t pass up the Killer Bacon at the Green’s Market booth or the fresh pita chips at the hummus booth. Music fans can boogie to tunes this year sponsored by ModestoView. Find it: Between H & I Streets on 15th St. Thurs & Sat, 7am-1pm Turlock- Don’t worry about letting mom down if you miss the Modesto market. Turlock has you covered! Find it: Broadway & Main St. Fri, 8am-1pm Oakdale- We think that this market should definitely have horse parking! This one starts a bit later in the year but is worth the wait if you prefer early evening shopping. Catch it on the way to your favorite local swimming/fishing spot. Find it: 3rd St between F & J Streets. Thurs starting on 06/09, 5pm-8pm Riverbank – The City of Action offers plenty of market satisfaction! This is another evening adventure option for those seeking cooler temperatures. Find it: Riverbank Community Center - 3600 Santa Fe St, Weds 5pm-8pm Vintage Faire – Sunday mornings in the Village 9- 1 pm Kaiser Medical Center – Thursday Mornings.
Go Downtown Modesto
The evenings are amazing this time of year. The downtown patios at our local restaurants are the place to be. One of the highlights is the 10th St Plaza Music Series. Every Friday night, from 7 -9 pm there will be live music in the plaza. You can hang out at Fuzio, get ready to go to a movie or enjoy the music before dinner or a show at the State or the Gallo Center. There is a great line up of bands this season.
