EDITORS

Greetings Modesto!

This is my favorite time of the year in ModestoUSA! Just as some people like baseball season, I like Graffiti season. The music, the cars, the people, the stories, the history, the fun and the best part of all, is how it makes us all feel. The kids are out of school, graduations are over, and Graffiti Summer is here and it is like a warm breeze lifting us all up. We get so down when we deal with the statistics at the macroeconomic level, but we need to stand up and shout about the stuff that makes Modesto USA cool. Yes Modesto Friends, COOL. We are cool. We are the birthplace of American Graffiti. Think about this, without American Graffiti, there may have been no Happy Days. So by that rationale, there would be no Fonz, no Laverne and Shirley, Lenny or Squiggy. Really. So who are we? Modesto USA! Where are we from? Modesto USA. But the most important things about our American Graffiti heritage are the people and places here in Modesto. Over the last few years, I have met so many interesting people and have heard so many stories, some true and some not so true, but all great stories about the place we call home. This is our community. These are the people that you will meet at MoBand, at the Cruise Parade, and even in and around the local stores and restaurants where we shop and eat. There is so much we can learn from our friends and neighbors. We can learn to be positive and shout out the good things. Last month we were treated to the Modesto Design exhibit at the McHenry Museum and did you know we even have our own Modesto Font? Crazy huh? Never knew and now I have downloaded it. There is always something interesting to learn and to see. If you haven’t walked the Historic Cruise Route tour, please do so and you will be really amazed at some of the fun history we have, and how many of these people are still here in town or have moved on and are really shaking things up around the world. The new Walk of Fame will celebrate our Legends of the Cruise. We need to love and protect our history and we need to nurture and grow our Graffiti Spirit. That is what we have, we have that Graffiti spirit that shines through and makes us different. But we need to do more. We have to do business with our friends and families. ModestoView’s mission is to make sure we live and think local. This month we will lose the Camera Center in downtown Modesto. The ViewCrew shopped there a lot. This is an example of a something that shouldn’t happen. This is a business that saw Modesto change and tried to change with it, but all it needed was for us to shop local. You lose a lot of experience, advice and instruction when you try to save $20 and now it is gone. Don’t let this happen. Make sure that when you can, you shop at the locally owned store, eat at the locally owned restaurant and encourage your friends to do the same. Take a look at the businesses that advertise here in Modesto. These are the good businesses in town and we all need to work together. Like the ViewCrew always says, “Teamwork is the key”. Enjoy your Graffiti Summer and remember, let us know what you like and don’t like about ModestoView. We produce this for you so keep us posted and please check us out 24/7 at www.modestoview.com

On of our favorite parts of American Graffiti is the infamous all night date of Debbie and Terry the Toad. This was something we just had to recreate, so we did. Our own Kate Serpa is Debbie and Matthew Mason is Terry, and they are just perfect. Kate’s hair was done by Irene Machillo of Lovecore Hair Design, thanks to Dana at Daydreams & Nightmares for the outfits and special super thanks to Roger Williams for the use of his priceless 1958 Impala to make our American Graffti dream come true. And of course, our super talented and award winning Michael J Mangano make the cover real.

ModestoView wins Gold! Gold! Gold!

Yes, 3 Golds. We area so very excited that we won 3 Hermes Gold Awards for magazine design. It is so great to be recognized by our industry for great work and first class design. Our goal is to create civic pride and receiving awards means that people around the USA are getting the 100% positive ModestoView message and they like it Huge congrats to our Art Director Pete Grimaldi and our Photo Editor Michael J Mangano for bringing all of our crazy ideas to life. - Thanks so much – Chris Murphy ModestoView would not be possible without the generous support of Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group. We are a family owned warehousing and logistics company, serving some of the best companies in the USA. By now you have probably guessed that we are pretty into the whole Graffiti Summer theme. From the cover to the last page of this issue we are showcasing all that we love about chrome, candy paint, pretty girls in big dresses and cool guys that look suspiciously like Fonzi. You might ask why we care so much. You might want to know what the big deal is. I sure did. I found my answers in the parking lot of Black Oak Casino and on the grounds of Sonora’s vast and beautiful Indigeny Reserve during a weekend spent with the Modesto Area Classic Thunderbird Club and their friends from all over the state. As it turns out, the folks that drive these vintage machines do it for a variety of reasons. Pride is definitely a factor as indicated by the pristine condition of vehicles taking part but that is not the only reason club members wield chamois clothes like Samurai swords always ready to whip into action and chrome polish like it is the cure-all for darn near any problem that one may have. One thing I learned about the people involved in car clubs that really impressed me and stuck with me is that to them, these cars are not just cars at all. These are bright yellow, brandy red, turquoise blue, pastel pink and deep black time machines that hold the power to take their owners to another time and place. As I listened to the conversations being had at the places that I went with the club I learned that some of the members are widows or widowers that keep their cars alive to keep their memories alive. The love of their life may be physically gone, but he or she comes back to life in the passenger seat as soon at the vintage carburetors start pumping fuel and the rumble of a meticulously tuned engine begins to roar. My hosts for my weekend inside the club

were Roberta and Ken Van Dyke. They were planners for the events that I attended and they are also the grandparents of my girlfriend. It was on their farm in Oakdale where in a garage under two car covers I discovered both the beauty of the Thunderbird and the reasons that they love the cars so much.

When you look at the photos here you will see pretty cars in pretty places but to get to this point, countless hours under hoods covered with grease and grime were worked and thousands of yards of fabric were shaped into amazing upholsteries. The bottom line is that the ViewCrew dedicates one issue per year to classic cars and car club members dedicate their lives. They live a certain lifestyle and they breathe exhaust like it is fresh air. You can’t get much cooler than that. June in Modesto usually focuses on graduation, cars, and on the movie “American Graffiti.” A salute to that is included in the Tribute to American Graffiti show at Mistlin Gallery, a part of a trio of shows on display until July 12. In the front of the Gallery, this theme show features a large triptych by Pam Phillips, numerous classic car paintings and historic landmark features like A&W and the Modesto Arch that recall movie and Modesto past. This show was organized by artist Virginia White and art on display in the gallery is for sale. The remainder of the Mistlin Gallery space is taken up by the Central California Art Association Members show and the “Faces of Clay” ceramics show. The member show

BAR Mustache Rides and Supporting Local History at the Running Iron

by Kate Serpa Photos by Philip Johnson

We all are familiar with the proper conventions of the “porn star name game”, correct? It’s that one where you figure out your new sexy pseudonym by squishing together the name of your first pet and the name of the street you grew up on. Mine, since you asked, would be Kitty Blossom -- which is probably the jackpot of all porn star names. Honesty though, the porn star name game is all well and fine, but a girl like me who does nothing remotely porn-y on the regular has no significant need of a skanky alter-ego. What a girl like me does need is a solid alibi; someone I can blame any of my intoxicated misgivings on. I, therefore, came up with a more practical name-game more suited towards my needs: the “alibi alias name” game -- feel free to play along. So what we do is take the first name of the person you hated the most in high school (Jennifer), and you slap that horrible person’s name in front of the name of your favorite hard alcohol (Beefeater) -- et viola! A perfect and easy to remember alibi name. Test drive your new alias at parties, first dates, bars, and basically anywhere you have the foresight that damage control may be necessary. Damage control is probably a must if you plan on going by the Running Iron on Monday night for a few Mustache Rides. And no; don’t be cheeky. Mind out of the gutter. Good guy Running Iron understands that Monday is the most suck-fest day of the week and has tried to make the world a

8

better place by offering Monday Mustache Rides -- a mixed whipped cream-topped Cold House mocha vodka shot that is so good it could get a school girl hammered (editor’s note: Modesto View does not condone getting school girls hammered. Seriously.). But hey, let’s say Mustache Rides aren’t your speed; totally fine. You are in most

excellent bartending hands with Aaron Johnston and David Eclevia. What sets the Running Iron apart in their opinion? “We’ve got more whiskey and beer than anything. We’re just a classic bar -- no craft cocktails. Just basic drinks and fun,” states David. “We try to have everyone’s favorite here… plus we’re the number one bar on Yelp,” agreed Aaron. First of all, any bar that will confidently admit to being dive is golden in my book -- although I do call b.s. on David’s comment that they don’t do craft cocktails. David himself served up the Mustache Ride shot and Aaron delivered a delectable concoction involving whiskey, fresh berries, and caramelized ginger. The Running Iron, though they may be hesitant to admit it, is pouring out some pretty fun stuff. In case you are not convinced, I’ve compiled an additional list of pros and cons for you in regards to the Running Iron’s finer points. You’re welcome. Pros: three pool tables, a solid selection of

whiskeys and craft beers (for you fancymustached types), shuffle board tables, NO karaoke ever, 21st Amendment on draft, air hockey, smoking patio, Mustache Rides. Cons: Girls missing the mark by actually growing actual mustaches. Plus, based on my knowledgeable authority as a Modesto bar columnist, I do believe the Running Iron to be the second oldest bar in Modesto (beaten only by Minnie’s). Therefore, drinking at the Running Iron means you’re supporting local history. It’s basically like visiting a museum, only it’s slightly better because there’s beer. Supporting local history and getting a few Mustache Rides -- not a bad Monday night, Modesto. Who said learning can’t be fun? And if you run into that tramp Jennifer Beefeater there, remind her that she owes me money. 516 McHenry Ave., Modesto, CA 209.579.920 www.facebook.com/mustachemonday209

CHEF

FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: See Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month

American Graffiti Cruisin’ Cuisine! by Dana Johnson Me, Dana~licious and the Modesto View’s very own sales manager, Blia Vang decided to experience American Graffiti (AG) beyond just cruisin’, we ate it! AG has its very own distinctive classic car collection, guys with slicked back hair, and girls in pony tails and poodle skirts! Though many of these classic looks have changed, the All American classic food is still made the same way and is highly consumed throughout Modesto!

So there we were cruisin’ down McHenry when our first stop was the Village Bakery in McHenry Village. So, I’m thinking apple pie, a traditional American favorite. To my surprise Village Bakery only has fresh baked apple pie during the holidays unless you call 48 hours ahead they’d be happy to bake it fresh for you! The next surprise had Blia & I both saying we had no idea that the Village Bakery has Gourmet Casper Hot Dogs on their menu! So keeping with our AG theme, I tried the (BLT) bacon, lettuce, & tomato dog, it was the bomb! Blia mowed down the Taco Dog, smothered in salsa, sour cream, cheese, lettuce, & tomatoes washed down with a Pepsi all at 11 in the morning! You may also want to enjoy the Chicago style hot dog or perhaps get the basic dog to get your AG on! Don’t forget to get a dozen of their chocolate chip cookies to take along for sharing while cruising AG style, too!

Next stop cruisin’ on McHenry was the Velvet Creamery with over 30 flavors of ice cream & 5-6 special flavors featured every month! So for those of you who don’t know Blia, she is a tiny lil’ hottie that is looking at me like ‘really we are going to eat again?!’ LOL very hard, we’re barely getting started! Bring on some more AG classics & let the ordering begin! 1 bacon cheeseburger & fries, 1 triple decker thick toast grilled American cheese & sweet potato fries, a side of veggie soup, Tuscany soup, too, a chocolate milkshake, root beer float, and yes, we were ecstatic as they had homemade apple pie ala mode! Yep, our tummies were feeling full and our lips were delighted by all that had passed through them! Needless to say we passed on the banana split as tomorrow is another day!

Last but not least, Blia & I cruised over to Oakdale Road to the 5 minute Car Wash where you can often find some cool rides getting their shine on! This is so much more than a car wash, inside you will find a unique gift store with something for everyone, and yes more food being prepared fresh in the My Garden Café’. Blia now is looking at me like she’s in total disbelief that I’m going to order more AG food for us to sample on. Come on Blia you gotta try this “Best Breakfast in Town” all American breakfast to be sure it’s worthy of our discriminate taste when it comes to sharing a recommendation with our spoiled Modesto Chef Viewers! So as we bellied up to the quaint café table we both suddenly found room for another round of food! Tender ham steak, eggs sunny side up, country po-

tatoes with peppers & onions, alongside a short stack of hotcakes topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream! Then our awesome server Teri said the hot chocolate is also very good. Blia go for it! It was all Dana~licious and we look forward to coming back to try the homemade jam they are famous for! I have been a regular patron of all 3 of these terrific restaurants over the years; it was my privilege as Blia has now indulged & experienced the Dana~licious eye roll in all 3 places for the very 1st time! Modesto View’s signature question: Blia, Beatles or Stones? “Can I just say I’m too young?” NO! Beatles then she said, I asked why when we both knew she was just sucking up to Chris Murphy, the Boss! Squalid the Troll “Trollarific”

by TruLuv Lopez

Tru Luv: A question I always ask! What is up with the title? Your name stands out. Tell me what it represents? Squalid: I used to go by “Perspective” but I realized I didn’t have any haha. So I started going by “the Troll” because the way I do things, think, act and live, isn’t like “the norm” or trendy, or typical. It kinda outcast me in society and in the music world etc. I stand out so the name had to as well, I prefer to go by SQUA... Which is what everyone naturally reverts to. Tru Luv: You released an album in 2013!I listened to it. It’s on a different level. How was the road to recording this project? Squalid: Yeah the “Machine Gun Belly” project was off the cuff. I was in the middle of finishing what will now be my second release this August. I recorded “Weird Enough” & then “Don Carnage” with my good friend Destructo Bunny. It was a fresh and different kinda energy. We knew we had to run with it. The whole concept was to do everything I normally don’t and since I had a stockpile of production from all my friends I hadn’t used, it worked out nicely I think. Tru Luv: What other projects have you taking on? Squalid: I recorded and released an album titled “Move Up” with the group Atlantis Rising. They are diverse and hungry collective of musicians and MCs that fueled my movement even further as well as my Yoga For Your Ears family. I’m currently getting ready to drop my sophomore effort titled “Don’t Call Me Dustin” which very close to my heart and was slowly made over the last 5+ years. I am also working on several projects with my boy Casey Macem who is a very talented producer, DJ and all around music enthusiast. My plate is definitely full & I’m happy about that Tru Luv: Tell me a bit about you growing up and how music came to play? Squalid: My family is originally from the Bay Area by way of Hayward, San Leandro etc. I was actually born in Oakland. I never knew my father and was raised by my

mom and grandmother in Modesto. Music was always on... My mom showed me everything from James brown, to the Grateful Dead, Barry White, classical, country, funk and everything. At times we were living out of her car and motels etc. The radio always worked. & music always helped! But when I was about 7 I found hip hop and it was all mine. I was always very observant and expressive. I was raised to be open minded, honest and felt supported in my creativity so by 10 I was already rappin’. It just always seemed like what I was supposed to do. I didn’t have much at times.. But I always had that and I always will. Tru Luv: Tell us something the fan may not know about you? Squalid: I like to paint and cook a lot. I’m a comic book fan and a movie buff. But mostly I’m a proud father and I love my daughter with all my heart. She’s my favorite song Tru Luv: Give us an exclusive sneak peak of your upcoming album? How many tracks? Free single download? Squalid: It’s titled “Don’t Call Me Dustin” it was produced and recorded entirely by Destructo Bunny. It has 11 solid tracks. It’s a very fun, honest, and heartfelt album. No singles yet... But it drops in august so there just around the corner Www.squalid.bandcamp.com Www.soundcloud.com/squa Facebook.com/squalid.thetroll Twitter @squalidthetroll

The Godfather of 10th St. By Chris Murphy

Bart Bartoni,

grew up in Escalon from 1930-1941 and then moved to Modesto. As a kid, Bart was always creative. Sketches and ideas were all over his school books. He lived on River Rd. between Escalon and Ripon and he had very wealthy neighbors. Those neighbors entertained often and their guests would arrive in such cars as V16 Cadillac Phaetons, Deusenbergs, Cords and Auburn Speedsters. His love of cars began at that moment. His mom was in the fashion and jewelry industry and he continued in that business. In 1961 Bart opened Bartoni Custom Jewelers on 10th Street at Bartoni Lane with one of Modesto’s all time memorable jingles, “Go See Bart, the Jeweler with a Heart”. Bart was always stylish and was friends with everyone. Bart and fellow Legend of the Cruise Pete Hischier were early friends of custom car creator Gene Winfield and became part of his team for years. Bart and Gene presented some of the best car shows in the USA here in Modesto over the years and Bart has designed cars with Gene Winfield. Bart and Lisa Lodi enjoy a life of cruising memories and they keep the Cruise and Classic car history going today. Bart will be Grand Marshall of the 2014 North Modesto Kiwanis Cruise Parade on June 6 and will be inducted into the Modesto Cruise Route “Legends of the Cruise” Walk of Fame on June 4.

tember in time for the architecture festival especially Park(ing) Day, September 19. Two of the designs come from Modesto companies. Phil Murillo and Mario Mendoza of Pride Signs entered a design that combines three features; leaves and branches modeled from the Modesto Ash tree, the iconic Modesto Arch, and a bicycle. “Our approach was to create natural, organic bends with the branches and leaves, as well as prominently incorporating both architectural and mechanical elements.” The design of Pires, Lipomi, Navarro Architects is titled The Corkscrew for obvious reasons. “Our region has a rich history of winemaking and Modesto is widely known for being home to the largest winery in the world. The Corkscrew provides a fun, whimsical and creative solution for a bike rack.” From Los Angeles, Rob Berry, from the firm of Berry and Linné, entered the fun and functional Pop Rack. “The playful, drawing-like optical game of this two-dimensional fabrication will further enliven the visual character of the streetscape in the Modesto Design District.” The three selections come from a field of 10 entries from all over California, several from Modesto. Funds for the project are provided by Artplace America through a grant to the Modesto Art Museum. The museum is working with the city to develop an art policy that will open the door to future projects and guide the city in the selection and installation of city-owned public art. This project is a test case for the policy. The entire project is part of the museum’s Building a Better Modesto program, using public art, architecture, landscape, and urban design projects to improve the quality of life in our city. One additional piece of experimental public art was recently completed. Thanks to Never Boring Design and Jordi Camps, the utility box at the corner of 10th and J has been covered with four wraps each depicting a painting by Jordi. Go by and have a look.

ROCKABILLY Chris Murphy’s Note: Rockabilly and Classic cars are part of who we are here in Modesto USA. We celebrate anytime a business opens that showcases our history, art and our music. The legendary Gene Winfield began creating some the world’s most famous custom cars in here in Modesto in the late 40s. (See our Walk of Fame story on page 17) Modesto is the birthplace of Rockabilly and it is only fitting that this new business opens with a Rockabilly and Blues show put on by classic car lovers and musicians. Modesto Rod and Custom Keeps the Music Alive

Graffiti Month is soon underway, amongst the many tributes to our wonderful graffiti city between cruising, old doo wop & Rockabilly music, poodle skirts, Pendletons, leather jackets and bobby socks, ponytails flying in the wind with your big rimmed glasses and cherry lipstick classic cars and hot rods. Brings us to meet a new shop in town owned and operated by: Kirk Westerink and Rob Olgiati, Modesto Rod and Custom located at 1295 Emerald Ste R Modesto Ca. Met up with Kirk to chat about their new adventure and their passions for old school remodels. “We have been involved with hot rods and custom cars our whole lives. It might be a new business but we already have the shop booked. We have both been building cars, and our reputation, for many years. After long ago outgrowing our home spaces, Modesto Rod and Custom was born. There is a combined 40+ years of experience at work here. We specialize in lowering, air suspension, sheet metal fabrication, body, and paint. Whatever you can dream, we can build!” Kirk and his partner Rob decided when they completely outgrew our home garages, and felt there was enough business to justify the shop. “I had a ton of equipment and 2 cars stuffed in my garage and it was cramped. Business has been pleasantly brisk. Guitarist Eli Lester rebuilds old cars as well and has visited a couple times. He’s a way cool dude and we are definitely glad to have his support” said Kirk. I asked if they have a favorite car they rebuilt? “I don’t know if I have a favorite ride I’ve worked on. You kind of bond with all of them. I really miss my ‘65 Buick though. We will be taking the 39 Chevy to Graffiti and probably the Model A and the ‘67 Caddy. Everyone has a vision for their own car. My job is to make it a reality. I. by Jennifer Allsup opinions. We’ve all seen a lot of cars over the years. There are good ideas in most of them”. Kirk continues. They will be hosting a gathering after the cruise on June 7th @ 4pm at the shop, kind of like a grand opening in celebration of Graffiti. With a BBQ and live music featuring some of our local talented artists: Tiffany Rose, The Pendeltons, Big Earl and the Cryin Shame & Eli Goodtimes & the Oldtimers. That will be a party in itself! If you have a classic or maybe even something newer that you need to be revamped, go support a cool local businesses! Or just stop in a take a gander what might be in store for you and your ride. BIG

SPECIAL PULLOUT SECTION www.modestocruiseroute.com www.graffitisummer.com

Here are our founding Legend of the Cruise Inductees:

By Chris Murphy

It’s been building for months. You see them

when the weather gets nice, the shine, the chrome, the tuck and roll. Graffiti Summer is coming and the classic cars are coming out. Graffiti Summer gets longer every year and the excitement for 2014 is reaching fever pitch. This is who we are Modesto USA. We need to let our Graffiti flag fly all year long and welcome this feeling that takes us back to the class of ’62. We need to tell our friends, or business travelers, our students, our senators and everyone that will listen, “ModestoUSA is the home of American Graffiti”. It is good for our soul, it is good for our economy and it makes us a special place that should be a destination for people around the world. To the people that lived the cruising life from the end of WWII to today, we all know this is what we are all about, but thanks to Modesto native and very successful film maker George Lucas, American Graffiti made Modesto famous, and launch many film careers and a wave of nostalgia that is still cresting today. Now we need to keep telling the story and we need to make it our story and celebrate the people, places and things that represented this wonderful time, that means something to people young and old The Modesto Historic Cruise Route is on 10th and 11th Streets in Downtown Modesto where the cruise started back when it was called “Dragging 10th”. Beginning at one end with Burge’s Drive In, and over the decades ultimately going out McHenry to Al’s, McHenry Village and then way beyond to Gemco (Target). Those cruising nights were home to some of the greatest stories, romances and legendary experiences. Music, girls, drive-ins, cars, cruising, chrome and some harmless fun. This is good and it is our Modesto USA story.

16

The Walk of Fame George

Lucas wrote his film American Graffiti about life and times of people in Modesto during the classic cruising years. This film was a great story about people that we all know. It launched George’s career and lead to so many other incredible films, many of them also based on his childhood experiences here in Modesto. We wanted to continue to tell these stories. We want the world to get to know the people that were behind the characters and the legends. These are our Legends of the Cruise. The Walk of Fame, the latest addition the Modesto Historic Cruise Route, celebrates our “Legends of the Cruise”. Permanent sidewalk markers will honor each of our “Legends:. The first cruise marker was presented to George Lucas during his appearance in Modesto for the Kiwanis Cruise Parade in 2013. Nine other markers will join the George’s in a new special designated “Walk of Fame” that begins in 10th Street Plaza and will extend each year as new inductees are honored. These are our own hometown heroes. They shaped the lives of today’s generation and thanks to them, Modesto USA is known around the world for being the birthplace of American Graffiti. This is just the beginning and the Historic Cruise Route is just getting started. More events, Legend

inductees and monuments and visitor experiences will be added each year for Graffiti Summer and new designs for a “retro 10th Street are being developed to make our Graffiti Story and benefit our local economy. Hopefully soon, we will have a Graffiti Museum. The Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame will be unveiled on June 4, during the MidValley Car show in 10th St place. The cars show starts at 6 and the presentation event will begin at 7. Candy Clark and Bo Hopkins, both stars of the movie American Graffiti will be there to accept their Legend of the Cruise plaque and unveil their permanent sidewalk marker. The mission of the Walk of Fame is to highlight the character and history of Modesto and educate and illuminate these stories to own citizens and visitors alike. Chris Murphy and ModestoView are the creators of the Historic Cruise Route and the Walk of Fame. The markers were donated and created by Chris Murphy, ModestoView, Sierra Pacific and Julio Hallack and the Concrete by Hallack team. Take a walk on the Walk of Fame and enjoy the Historic Cruise Route. www.modestocruiseroute.com

ModestoUSA is where Graffiti Summer lives all year long. The new Walk of Fame will be unveiled on June 4 in 10th St Place featuring American Graffiti stars Bo Hopkins and Candy Clark. The legendary N. Modesto Kiwanis American Graffiti Car Show and the Cruise Parade will be on June 6 featuring the Grand Marshall, Bart Bartoni and the other Walk of Fame inductees. Big news this year is that the Cruise Parade will go up McHenry this year. The Mistlin Gallery is featuring an American Graffiti art show and so much more. See all the events happening and your one stop link to ModestoCana and all things Graffiti at:

Candy Clark

As Debbie Dunham in American Graffiti, Candy Clark stole America’s heart on her over night date with Terry The Toad (Charles Martin Smith) as they cruised in Steve Bolander’s (Ron Howard) Impala. It was sweet, fun, and after all the mischief and disasters, turned out to be good date.

Paul LeMat

The yellow ’32 Deuce Coupe is famous around the world. Paul LeMat’s John Millner character in American Graffiti represented the drag race and custom car culture and his antics as he was stuck with Carol (Mackenzie Phillips) gave the film a comedic feel. He has a successful TV and film career and regularly participates in Graffiti events and car shows.

Bart Bartoni

Go See Bart, the Jeweler with A Heart. Bart went to school with Gene Winfield and became part of the Winfield Design team and later opened a jewelry store on the Historic Cruise Route on 10th St. Bart brought style and flair to the cruising era and had a ringside seat for the evolution of the cruise. Bart is the Grand Marshall of the 2014 Cruise Parade.

Chuck Billington

Working as a metal fabricator, Chuck was a member of the E Curie Awol Club along with George Lucas. They raced foreign cars and Chuck was responsible for making the roll bar for George’s Fiat. Chuck continued to race, setting speed records and created Billington Manufacturing. Chuck passed away in a plane crash in 2006 and his son Tim continues the car tradition and his company today.

Pete Hischier

One of the early Century Toppers (1950), Pete was part of Gene Winfield’s team and worked in his original shop and had his own very stylish vehicles including a 50 Mercury that he later sold to Gene when we bought a 50 Cadillac. Pete is retired from his nursery business and remains active in Graffiti events

Leroy Applequist

Hughson High Class of 49. The Motorcycle cop on the Cruise route in the late 50s. Officer Applequist was responsible for many a ticket, for everything from speed, lowered cars, failure to stop and so much more. Besides his cruising enforcement legacy, he was also on hand to guard John F. Kennedy during a visit to Modesto.

Terry McGrath

Modesto High Class of 58, Terry gained his Graffiti legend status for his protest of the change of direction of 10th St to one way by knocking all the traffic cones down with his car, then replacing them all by hand when confronted by the police. Terry also had a notoriously high number of traffic tickets. He later ran a successful moving and storage company that his family still operates.

POETRY

CAN YOU DIG IT?

A Tribute Poem for American Graffiti — by Sam Pierstorff, Modesto View, Poet Laureate

If you unearth the body parts buried beneath G street, you will find a hot rod’s canary yellow doors, the steel wings of a white T-Bird, the tire tread of a ‘55 Chevy still smokin’ like the Sixteen Candles you let burn on the last night of summer, 1962. These are not footprints or fossils. These are the birthmarks of Modesto. Rest your ear against the hot asphalt of McHenry Ave.

and you will hear Wolfman Jack spinning At the Hop, and Johnny B. Goode, and That’ll Be The Day when cruising meant living and death was a finish line no one saw coming. And if you look closely at the exhaust curling out of the tailpipes of yesterday’s vintage cars, you might see George Lucas rising like a genie, and your first wish will be to rewind—

turn back the clock so you can rock around it again and erase every name in your Book of Love because you were the fool who kept falling for great pretenders. But you knew that every stoplight was a fresh start; every turn could lead you to your goddess. People say that “You can’t stay 17 forever.”

And you believe them, but American Graffiti is spray-painted on the walls of your whole body. The engine that roars loudest is your own heart

beating, beating. Do not wait for the checkered flag. Do not look over your shoulder. Look ahead. The fastest thing in the valley is life. Don’t let it pass you by.

AUTHOR

Fathers and Sons and Sports by Ken White

“When a father gives to his son, both laugh; when a son gives to his father, both cry.” – Jewish Proverb

Sports

offered one of the best ways (sometimes the only way) a father could get close to his son. By listening to, reading about, or watching the game together, by teaching the game and perhaps coaching it, by keeping score and debating the strengths and weaknesses of your idols, the two of you could spend time alone together and learn to at least respect, certainly enjoy and appreciate, even like or love, one another. Baseball, in particular, was a game that bound together fathers and sons. Like so many things, baseball was easy and it was hard. It was gracious and clumsy, quirky and predictable, fair and foul, old and new, wild and controlled, relaxed and intense, fun and torture. Often thanks to the expectations. That you enjoy it. That you were good enough. That you’d want to play it again. With him. That he’d have time for you now and you’d have time for him later. Baseball, in all its elegant and simple complexity, echoed the saga of fathers and sons, as well as the unbroken circle of life. Baseball was the only sport for me. Probably because summer was my favorite season. Maybe because it was familiar. I understood it. I got it. And I could play it. There was something about the history and tradition, innocence and nostalgia, the symmetry and sense of fair play, the rite and ritual. Throwing, catching, hitting, running, and sliding all seemed so natural and effortless. It always made me think of a time when things seemed easier and better. I liked the fact that it was the player that scored, not the ball. That it included errors, since we all made them. That it valued a keen eye, quick reflexes, and good judgment. That it was a team game. That it wasn’t played against the clock. That, as writer Roger Angell once wrote, “Since baseball time is measured only in outs, all you have to do…is keep hitting, keep the rally alive, and you have defeated time. You remain young forever.” For me, baseball was the never-ending game. And, it felt like home.

Tuesday the 3rd at the Brewhouse, Old Man Markley(Fat Wreck Chords) whose 2nd album “Downside Up” debuted at #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass charts, they are often described as Banjo Punk: they will be joined by Dandelion Massacre(2011 Alt Indie) and Water Tower(Americana from the North West.) BLUES

Polish Blues and New Old Friends

by Big Earl Matthews

Hi friends, I hope everyone has had a chance to enjoy some of the great weather we have been having as we round the corner into summer. I myself am ready for summer, in fact I already picked out my favorite A/C unit and am clinging to it with all the strength I can muster. If you have followed my writing in the past you know I am involved in a project called My Friends and I. Last year we recorded a 13-track CD featuring 13 local songwriters and bands. The CD release parties we threw were some of the funnest shows for me. Well, we are doing it again, this time with 16 totally different songwriters and bands. This time around we are also going to record live performance videos for each of the songs. It’s a big project with a lot of work to get done and we need your help to see it through. Please take a moment and go to indiegogo.com and check out “My Friends and I Vol. 2” for more information and to check out all the cool swag we are offering to our backers. I believe in this project on so many levels. It’s a great chance for our fans to help foster creativity in their own back yards while getting some great music in the process. As for cool live shows you can check out this month, on the 7th we will be playing a car show and grand opening event at Modesto Rods and Customs, along with Tiffany Rose and The Pendletons. Sweet old rides and great music should make for a good time for the whole family.

We have one more big show in Modesto this month and I really feel like its going to be one of the best shows of the summer. This show will feature three very distinct and different styles of Blues music- Boogie Woogie Piano Blues, Harp driven 50’s Chicago Style Blues and West Coast Rockin’ Blues. Featured will be the Boogie Boys from Poland, The MOFO Party Band from Fresno and Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame from good ol’ Modesto. This show is being held at the brand new Prospect Theater Project in downtown Modesto on K st. It’s such a great room and this will be my first time putting on a show in this new space. It really is the best room in Modesto of its size. The theater is only one-block form Concetta at the heart of downtown Modesto and really, you can’t beat that. See brownpapertickets.com/event/691028 for tickets. Buy early as they will go fast. I hope that whatever you do for fun this month it involves good friends and live music. Remember that the best way to make sure there is fun stuff happening in your hometown is to support those that work hard to make it happen for you.

BLUES & JAZZ

What’s new with Jazz and the Blues news by Eric Benson

The summer is heating up in temperature and things to do, did anybody say “School’s out for summer, school’s out forever.” My last child graduated and will fly the coop come fall. Oh the challenges of the music biz, a music club owner the other day asked “Why do musicians expect me to pay them when they don’t promote what they do?” After a long deep breath we commiserated that musicians and club owners need to do more to promote what we do, amen to that. I see both sides of the issue, potential losses of the club and artists wanting to get paid to play. Well folks today there is no excuse for not promoting what we do. You can use the internet, use Face book, text, direct phone, send up hot air balloons over Modesto, set off dynamite as did Bill Douglas of Beach Bach and Dynamite Society did in Half Moon Bay to get his music series going. Everyone involved in the music booking should be involved in promoting. Yes there will be slow nights when you are playing for your girlfriend and your mother but if you keep on pushing the music and stay true to the course you will create a following and will prevail. I’ll even make it easier for you, if you send me your events I will send it out to all my email contacts that I have amassed over 20 years of pushing the music. If I can bring people down for a Blue Monday Party every Monday in downtown Modesto for 7 years in the past it can be done! Of course, check the Modestoview. com calendar. Blue Monday Monthly Invitational Jam continues at the Barkin’ Dog Grill on the first Monday every month. June 2th features Johnny Valdes & Straight Ahead with special guest Derek Rolando on congas, timbales and Latin percussion. The band features John Adey on bass, Marti Martinez on Sax’s, Dave Hawks on drums and guitar slinger Johnny Valdes on guitar and vocals. Derek has played with the Escovedo family, Dave Mathew’s, Oreste’s Vitale’s, and some of the hardest hitting musicians on the scene in the East Bay. Show goes 7:00 to 10:00 PM. Call for reservations if you want

a good seat. The State Theatre continues with community friendly booking. In June, the 1st with Franc D’Ambrosio doing a one man Broadway show, June 11th Grateful Dead Tribute with a note for note jam to the Dead’s 70’s albums, and June 14th Sing along with movie musical Grease. The Gallo Center for the Arts continues with their diverse booking in June some sold out shows, tickets still available for; for June 7th Hit Man, Carlos Mencia, comedian, June 24th Maxwell. Okay I’m excited! I’m a little impartial since I book the room but DEWZ Wine Bar features some of the best local music in the area in a quality intimate environment. And DEWZ wine bar has increased their serving up of weekly music featuring the best of our local musicians to two nights a week. In June: Friday 6tj: the mighty Tim

The Wine Bar is a nice casual intimate setting to hear music with food and bar available. Best to call ahead for wine bar seating as seating is limited. On the Jam session front check out: David Dow hosting Barkin’ Dog Grill Jazz jam every Thursday night and the Queen Bean with Indie, acoustic jam every Sunday. ACOUSTIC

Profiles in Philharmonic Poetry: by Aaron Rowan Francesca Bavaro

Someone told me recently that right before she won her first Grammy, Adele came through Modesto and played one of those Underground Lounge concerts that B92 radio used to produce. Sadly, I wasn’t let in on that secret when it happened. I have a secret I’m going to let you in on, though: we have a powerhouse artist right here among us, as amazing as Adele herself, and who I have had the honor of working both with and for on several occasions Francesca Bavaro is best known for her repertoire of renditions of the classics, but she is actually an incredibly gifted songwriter and lyricist. Drawing musical influence from the likes of Tori Amos, and lyrical influence from master storytellers such as Bob Dylan, Francesca composes deep and powerful pop songs on her keyboard. Her rich voice has led her to honors such as the grand prize in the 2011 ‘Valley’s Got Talent’ contest, and a spot in a special concert this year featuring members of the ‘Glee’ cast,

both of which were sponsored by the Gallo Center For The Arts. More recently, her skillful lyricism landed her the top prize in the Modesto Unplugged Music Festival’s first songwriting contest this year, where she prevailed over many gifted composers from across the country to win a cash payout and a sponsorship to the Yosemite Songwriting Retreat in October, where she will have the chance to be mentored by greats including Peter Rowan and Keith Greeninger. This is a great event a friend of mine created just last year. Check out www.yosemitesongwriting.com to get the full scoop on this conference. Just as amazing as Francesca’s winning submission to the MUMfest song contest is the story that inspired it. When not sharing her music, Francesca can be found toiling at the local O’Brien’s Market, where she has no shortage of ideas to draw from. ‘Be Still’ was written after an overheard conversation between two girls waiting in line,

who were discussing how each of them was cheating on her boyfriend…with the other’s boyfriend. Francesca spun this lunacy into a ballad which was the loveliest tune I had heard in a while. Another major source of creativity for her is imagining the what-ifs - she’s much better with crafting sad tunes than upbeat ones, but life is just too damned good to her these days for her to have any real-life melancholy material. And it’s only getting better. Earlier this year Francesca received a personal invitation to audition for a new musical talent search series filming in Los Angeles. She’s even performed onstage in Vegas a time or two in recent months. It’s only a matter of time before she finds herself in the big leagues in one of those hotspots. Until then, you can catch her doing what she does best 2-3 times each month at Dewz Restaurant (1505 J St.) June calendar: June 7 - Local Celtic groups Cooking With Turf and Golden Bough are among the

lineup at the Scottish Highland Games at Tuolumne River Park. 9 AM-5 PM; tickets $13. June 10 - TJ from The Dustbowl Children performs at ‘Ballads On The Blacktop,’ a series of acoustic players at a new farmers market every 2nd and 4th Tuesday from 3-7 PM at Sciabica’s Oil Of The Olive, 2150 Yosemite Blvd. Music starts around 5 PM. June 18 - Orchestral folk duo The Thoughts (from Seattle, WA) with Mattea Overstreet and Boscoe’s Brood. 8 PM at Peer Recovery Art Project, 1222 J St. $5 cover. June 24 - Patty Castillo Davis at Ballads On The Blacktop, 5 PM. June 26 - Medieval & Spanish blues guitarist Claude Bourbon, on tour from England, plays at Café Deva, 1202 J St. Opening up will be Southern CA artist Jen Hajj. 7:30 PM, $5.

FIT

Broken Fitness by Efren Martinez

Swim, Bike, Run or even strength training with weights for most of us including myself can forget about safety first and just how fragile we really are and how tough it is to recover. Last month I was on a solo training heading into Oakdale when my front wheel suddenly locked up. I landed in the middle of the intersection and I was awakened by some nice people and my wife. For some reason my wife insisted on shadowing me in our van so I wouldn’t be out there cycling alone. I end up at the hospital with a comminuted fracture involving the lateral aspect of right clavicle with extension into the acromioclavicular joint. Translation; I had a broken bone with complications. This meant no lifting, pushing or pulling with my right arm and no swimming, cycling or running for 6-8 weeks. Many of you may have faced something similar. Suddenly my yearly Escape from

Alcatraz Triathlon I had been training so hard for was over. I was eager to find out why my wheel locked up. Working with Ed Battisfore from The Oakdale Bicycle Shop and Keith Williams of Williams racing rims, we investigated. They both concluded that it was human error. My error, I simply was in a hurry to get my ride on that morning and didn’t put my front racing wheel on correctly. Now, what was I going to do to get back on track and how could I heal much quicker than the normal textbook doctor recommendations. Being without fitness for 8 weeks just wasn’t going to do for me. I quickly learned that the faster I could get the blood moving throughout my body and especially to my broken clavicle, the faster I could get the bone to reattach. With my doctor’s OK, I was back on my spin bike within 10 days of my injury. I managed to get my spin on with my arm in a sling

and taped to my body so I wouldn’t jar my shoulder. A few days after that, I added a 3-mile walk with a figure 8 shoulder harness/sling. It was all very slow, but after awhile I went from a constant pain to occasional discomfort. 16 days later I got back in the water which was the toughest. I actually had to relearn how to swim with one arm. Exhausting, you bet, but after the 3rd time in the water I seemed to get better at it. Even though I was very slow, I was swallowing less water at the end of my swimming session and my efficacy went up. It’s been now nearly 3 weeks since my fall and thankfully I now have some mobility with little rotation in my right shoulder. My yearly Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon might be over for 2014 but it didn’t mean I had to stop living a healthy lifestyle while healing myself. Here are some important fitness safety tips we should all practice. Friends, please always put safety first. Remember just taking that extra moment to doublecheck yourself and your gear and not be in a hurry can make or break you. Always wear a helmet when riding your

bike. Always safety inspect your bike before going on a ride, especially your quick releases. Run and ride with a buddy. Let others know when & where you are going for a run/ride. Double tie your shoe laces before you go out on a run & wear bright clothes. When working with free weights, be cautious of them so they don’t drop on your foot. Road ID is my preferred fitness App & it’s free on iTunes. Cyclist! Adding running & swimming to your workout builds upper body strength & it’s what saved my shoulder from completely shattering when I fell. www.facebook.com/QuakeFitness

Are you ready for a fun summer?

Imagination

by Leia Johnson

Whether you have a 5 year old or you’re a teenager. Concert in the park is the place to be every Thursday night of the summer. Modesto’s very own MoBand plays a variety of music at Graceada Park. This year’s theme is “Rockin’ The Bowl”. There will be nights like “Rockin’ The Vinyl” to “Tye-Dyed”. It’s a great place to have a picnic, play in the park, and spend with your friends and your family. My favorite part is seeing people I didn’t know would be there. I promise that if you go, you will see at least one person you know. I always sit in the same spot and we eat pizza while

24

listening to the good music. My sister, Sofia, likes to dress up in the theme of the night. Here she is last year wearing a poodle skirt for Graffiti. If you want more information check out the website for MoBand at www.moband. org. I hope to see you Rockin The Vinyl on June 5th! If you can’t travel abroad this summer, but would like a experience another country, Modesto Sister Cities International is looking for host families for 3 students - 2 girls and 1 boy from France. All the students are 16 years old and speak English. They will be staying from July 5th - July 25th. If you are interested in this fun opportunity to learn about the French culture and to share all the great things Modesto has to offer, like MoBand, please call John at 602-4514

Recently a friend told me a beautiful story. At a hospital two sick men are sharing a room. One of them has permission to sit up on his bed for one hour, every day in the afternoon. This man’s bed is next to a window. The other man’s bed is at the opposite side of the room. He has been ordered to lay still and not move. They talk for hours about their wives, family, time spent in the military, travels and what they like to eat. After some time they become good friends. Every day, in the afternoon, the sick man whose bed is next to the window, sits up and reports everything he sees outside his window to his roommate. The other sick man feels much better and invigorated listening to his friend’s description of what lies outside: There is nice park and a little pond with ducks and geese, kids are playing there with their little toy boats and throw bread crumbs to the ducks. The big, old cedar trees add character and a sense of security and shelter. In the far distance are townhouses, lined up in neat rows. The roofs are glowing warmly in the afternoon sun. The roommate who cannot move, closes his

By Mary Layton eyes and imagines all this. Days and weeks go by. One morning, on her routine delivery of medicine, the nurse discovers that the man who is next to the window passed away peacefully in his sleep. Upset she calls for help to remove the deceased from the room. The other man whose health has been improving, begs the nurse to be moved next to the window. The nurse agrees to it. After some clean up, the man is moved to lay in his late friend’s bed by the window. With great difficulty he pulls himself up to look outside to see the world with his own eyes. To his great bewilderment and shock, all he sees – is a large wall in front of the window. Perplexed and in a panic he calls the nurse and asks her what would make his roommate tell him things that aren’t there, like telling him about this beautiful scenery and attractive town? The nurse replies : This man was blind. He could not even see the wall that you see. May be he wanted to give you strong hope for your heart. GO DOWNTOWN MODESTO! Coming Soon! Yeah Yeah Yeah

As we cruise Graffiti Summer, we are getting ready for the British Invasion. On July 6, 1964, Hard Days Night, the best rock and roll movie of all time premiered in London. The Beatles had conquered the world with Beatlemania and now the Beatles conquered the big screen. From the opening chord to the final show, this movie captured the spirit of Beatlemania. Elementary Penguin and Third Party will be performing Beatle hits and the remastered film will take over the State Theatre. Sunday, July 6. 3 pm. www.thestate.org
