Greetings
Graffiti Summer by Chris Murphy
Greetings Modesto Friends,
Contents
This is a really special Graffiti Summer this year. This is my favorite season of the year when we all remember the cruise and get our Graffiti on. Very special this year is that my wife Rebecca and I have been married for 30 years! Wow. I am a very lucky guy. Also special is that our daughter Abigail is nearly recovered from West Nile and had a wonderful semester at Berkeley. Super special, this month my oldest daughter Madison is getting married to a great guy named Ryan. Even doubly special is that they have decided to make Modesto their home. They love Modesto USA, this classic American city, and it makes every issue and posting for ModestoView all worth it as they look at Modesto through the positive and inspiring lens of all that there is here to do and a great community to raise a family. All of you ModestoView friends are a part of this and we feel so special that you are enjoying living here along with us and our ViewCrew. Our ViewCrew is amazing and we are so excited to announce that ModestoView has won Hermes Gold Awards for creative design. We have won national awards for magazine design for the third year in a row! I am so very proud of our ViewCrew for showing you all how great our city can be and special thanks to our designers Pete Grimaldi and Michael J Mangano for their inspiring creativity.

Graffiti Summer - June 2015
One of the best things about our American Graffiti heritage is the people and places here in Modesto. Over the last few years, I have met so many interesting people and have heard so many stories, some true and some not so true, but all great stories about the place we call home. This is our community. These are the people that you will meet at MoBand, at the Cruise Parade, and even in and around the local stores and restaurants where we shop and eat. There is so much we can learn from our friends and neighbors. There is always something interesting to learn and to see. If you haven’t walked the Historic Cruise Route tour, please do so and you will be really amazed at some of the fun history we have, and how many of these people are still here in town or have moved on and are really shaking things up around the world. Our Walk of Fame celebrates our Legends of the Cruise. We need to love and protect our history and we need to nurture and grow our Modesto Graffiti USA Spirit. That is what we have, we have that Graffiti spirit that shines through and makes us different. We have a special place in pop culture history thanks to the the cruising in Modesto and this cinematic gift that George Lucas gave our city.
Now, we are proud to announce that we have created a new company to help promote Modesto! Modesto Graffiti USA has been launched so that now you can get really cool Modesto memorabilia, cups, shot glasses, t-shirts, hats and more. Isn’t about time you can get some really cool souvenirs and gifts for your friends, family and visitors? Now you can. These will be for sale at stores here in town and online at www.modestograffitiusa.com Profits from this will be donated to Peer Recovery, Ernie Bucio Music in Schools Scholarship and Howard Training center and other non-profits. This will be one of the best ways you can help give back. I hope you enjoy Graffiti Summer this year and make sure you tell a friend about ModestoView.
Thank you so much, Chris Murphy Founder and Publisher – ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

by Ruben J Porras The heat of the summer is starting to knock on Modesto doors, and with it come wild animals in search of water. In the neighborhood that I live in, everything from squirrels to skunks have made it clear that we live on their turf and on their terms. At night, skunks pace up and down in front of our homes like troops guarding a secret military base, and opossums make their presence known just to serve up a bit of intimidation. I am writing all of this for a reason. You see, I have a fear of rodents that started when I was just a kid As a fat little boy in husky jeans and an illfitting flannel shirt my father thought it smart to take me on a hunting trip. I recall being upset about this idea because I wasn’t real keen on killing animals, but I made my father believe that I was into the whole project. Truth be told, I was most excited about the fact that trips with dad usually involved snacks and for me, this meant cookies. I love cookies At one point during the trip my father came to his senses and realized that an overweight kid that was huffing and puffing while trying to walk between manzanita bushes carrying handfuls of cookies had no place in the woods. It was at that point that that he asked me to sit on a ridge while he went down to look for something to kill. I was happy with this plan until something happened that changed my life forever. As it turns out, little fat kids are not the only living organisms that love cookies. Chipmunks in particular have a fondness for sweet, crunchy goodness. I learned this as I sat there and the scariest thing that I could have imagined happened to me. In just a brief instant, I went from being perfectly content doing nothing but chewing, daydreaming and staring into the woods to fighting for my young life. As I look back now, maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration. In one quick sprint, a chipmunk managed to attack me and as far as I knew he wanted to eat my face and forever disfigure me as a punishment for entering his territory as a hunter. Actually, I am pretty sure that the little toothy terrorist just wanted my cookies. If I close my eyes now I can still hear myself
Graffiti Summer - June 2015
Grabbing my camera and heading out always makes me feel great. These are a few of the images I have shared recently on Twitter and Instagram where you can follow me as @Fiasco_Life. Photos by Ruben J. Porras yelling and the chipmunk squealing as he darted onto me and under my fluffy blue vest. I was pretty sure that I was going to die. I used all the energy I had to get my chunky butt off the ground and run. Thankfully, I survived. I am writing this to ask that everyone reading this be kind to the animals that share our Modesto neighborhoods this summer. You will see them on the Dry Creek Trail, on the Virgin-
ia Corridor trail and even right where you live. You may pay for the land that you live on, but it was theirs first and that should be respected. Have an awesome June in Modesto, USA. Take in a car show, go for a walk, enjoy local events and if you have time, bake me some cookies. Email me at ruben@modestoiview.com and I will gladly come pick them up.

Art Graffiti Summer by Jim Christiansen Graffiti Summer events are coming up this month. Our downtown and McHenry Murals reflect the theme. The newest one up by Sonic Drive In on McHenry reflect the car hop and cars culture. The mural initiative is pretty well representative on your downtown Cruise Route. And there are some more murals I’ve seen pop up in my neighborhood in past year. One on Sunrise Ave. at E. Fairmont graces one of the street block off walls, with an orchard, sunset sky scene. If you cruise down Kimble Ave. to the side of Foundation Tattoo, you’ll find the Lost Land, in the motif reminiscent of Jurassic Park, Dinosaur scale size. Just down McHenry, off Alice, in the parking lot and alley near the Tom Ney cruising mural, are some murals in a more recent style. These haven’t gotten much notice in the press, but I enjoyed coming across them. I hope you do, too. Art Walk is Third Thursday in the midst of downtown Modesto. Be sure to find some cars
and cruising at 13th and J St. And if you need to cruise out of town on a Wednesday, the Peer Recovery artists are doing their long summer nights through September in their Art RoundUp with the Oakdale Open Air Market. The City of Modesto environmental calendar has a call out to local artists for water themes, to be considered for the finished calendar. You can usually find the finished product at the Mistlin Gallery during the holiday season. Mistlin’s member show continues until June

12th. Many large pieces are on display this month. I went counter to the trend with some of my smaller, affordable pieces. The next show is garden theme. The Life Drawing sessions continue every other Saturday at the Chartreuse Muse. Jack is seeking people to draw for the sessions. Go get on his email list! It is from 10 am to 1 pm, $10. Jordi Camps continues to churn out more and more quality work on display at his Picasso’s
Deli and Gallery. If you’re familiar with Jordi’s work, you’ll see they opened another spot over on Kansas Ave., with an exterior Jordi Camps décor. I may still have some art up at Hinkley Optometric, and Papachino’s, and the Mistlin member’s show, but the news for me is Yvette LaForce’s opening of Gallery Red in Las Vegas. She’s invited me and one other local artist to show at Gallery Red, with a planned Grand Opening July 4th. Yvette’s art is pretty well-known around Modesto, her home for many years, and so with the new venture in her hometown, she’s bringing some of her Modesto friends into the Las Vegas Art Scene. Artists support other artists. I’m looking forward to it. I plan to make the Grand Opening, and while my art will stay, I won’t be staying in Vegas too long, as I have a July Art View to write next month.

Bar
Last Call
by Kate Serpa Photos by Philip Johnson
So I’ve got good news and bad news. Bad news is this will be my last ModestoView BarView (cue: boo, hiss). Good news is that Phil and I have chosen our three favorite stops for this last stumble, and as I’m currently eyeballs-deep in the good nectar, we better get packing. Every selected locale is independently owned, operated, and considered by me, to be a landmark in Modesto. These are all freaking amazing places, and all coincidentally, maintain prime outdoor seating. Perfect for summer? You’re damn right. You haven’t been to one of them? Well, you’ve got your weekend plans now. Stop being a sucker; instead, suck up that Modesto sunshine.
Stop No. 3: Tresetti’s World Caffè Stop No. 1: The Queen Bean Coffee House
Stop No. 2: Minnie’s
This patio is my and Phil’s monthly office; every ModestoView BarView is mapped out over coffee, cigarettes, and the occasional beer. The patio features weekly live local music; the menu features delicious sandwiches, coffee, and beer/wine. The Queen Bean holds a steady pulse on Modesto’s goings-on, for both over and under the legal age limit.
Minnie’s may stand as my “most interviewed” ModestoView bar; and who could blame me? Aside from the fact it’s the oldest bar in Modesto 1940s), this tiki bar features the absolute best outdoor bar seating in town, and they have JERKS! Don’t let that pink color dissuade you, kids; these blended snakes in the grass have straws full of Bacardi 151. Order a “Jerk-Off ” if you’re feeling particularly adventurous.
If ever there were a landmark bar synonymous with downtown Modesto, Tresetti’s would be ranking Mardi Gras King of the strip. Beautiful downtown dining, close proximity to the Gallo Center, outdoor patio seating, a fabulous bar sporting adept bartenders, and an attached wine shop (read: room FULL of wine) are your main draws here. The late and wonderful Mitch Maisetti told me once he read and appreciated my articles; a great compliment from a great man.
How lucky are you Modestans, to have such a fantastic paper in your hands? ModestoView is committed to keeping you constant with every event happening in our great town. There’s nothing going on, you say? Only the boring get bored, kid. The last pages of this here publication are catalogued with lists of events to keep you up to date on the heartbeat of Modesto. ModestoView doesn’t happen magically; there are a number of people within this paper committed to keeping Modesto active. Your town is only as good as you try to make it; I, for one, think ModestoView is a driving force. And with that, I really must dash, friends. It’s been a real slice. Cheers, Modesto. P.S. What’s the difference between a gross bus stop and a lobster with breast implants? One’s a crusty bus station, the other is a busty crustacean.

Performance A Time to Perform in June by Kaye Osborn Hello Summer! Hello Cruising! Hello Graffiti Month! Lots of stuff to do around our county! Car shows, parades, concerts in the park and a time to reconnect with neighbors! My husband and I prepared a monologue for our audition last month at Gallo! The other performers were amazing and inspirational. Happily, the director liked everyone! We were all cast in the show Inherit the Wind which will be performed at the Gallo Center for the Arts during November. The drama debuted in 1955, is a story that fictionalizes the 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial. This debate over creationism versus evolution has contemporary resonance. Many local theater groups are dark during June. They are in rehearsals. Read July’s view for information about the new productions. Here is what coming to our neck of the woods! The Modesto Junior College Theater Department presents the New Play Festival featuring “world premieres” of original one act plays
written and directed by MJC theater students. The short works staged each night include “The Decision” by Christopher Wells; “The Case of Doctor Chase” by Sam Mellor; “A Party of Catherines” by Mar De La Cruz; “Omaha!” by Shane Meyers; “The Brothers Martelli” by Nick Salvucci, and “Running in Circles” by Salvador Vasquez. MJC Professor of Theater Michael Lynch promises “an exciting theater evening with new and fresh voices for the stage.” Performances are June 11, 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Cabaret West Theater on West Campus, located at 2201 Blue Gum Avenue in Modesto. Chef Retro Graffiti Food & Fun
Strikes & Spares Grill

-Yosemite Lanes
Strikes & Spares What is the first thing you think of when it comes to American Graffiti? Cruising cool cars, jukebox tunes, waitresses on roller skates, burgers, fries, shakes, black leather bomber jackets and poodle skirts, or do you just feel the nostalgia of a more wholesome time? The American Graffiti movie was set in 1962 and Modesto’s Yosemite lanes opened in 1961 and lucky for us it’s still entertaining and feeding the next generations We have lots and lots of restaurant choices throughout Modesto and the surrounding communities, but few are all-inclusive like Strikes and Spares Grill located within Yosemite Lanes. Cindy Bond has been the full-scale restaurant, snack bar, and bar manager for a committed 24 years! She’s been married to Robert Bond for the past 7 years; she has 5 kiddos and 12 grandkids. All 5 of her kids have worked there, and so have 3 of her grandkids; a real family tradition. Cindy takes pride in all the food and beverages available to her customers, especially her homemade biscuits and gravy, fresh ground

coffee, and she said, “I love our pancakes!” So of course I tried it all, including an all-American breakfast! Yes, per Chris Murphy’s request, I also sampled the traditional Graffiti menu items: Big Dana~licious cheeseburger, fat crispy French fries, a root beer float, and Cindy’s homemade peach cobbler topped with a giant scoop of vanilla ice cream, sooooo good! Okay, you must be thinking, “No way!”, well, I did have help from my family who joined me for the “research” to accurately report to the Modesto Viewers! Funny how 3 out of 4 were suddenly free to go to work with me! After we filled up on the tasty plates, we were ready for some physical activity to burn off some of those calories. I’ve been bowling for years, truly one of my favorite family pastimes. Dave Ramsey has been the bowling alley manager for the past 4 years and he was enthusiastic to show us the recent interactive lane games. Total goofy fun watching our faces made into silly animated characters, my son and boyfriend pictured in girlie wigs and even

You can also login to Facebook to enhance the experience. It even has lane chat. Yep, you can chat between lanes with your friends by activating your lane screen. What is the world coming to? More fun that’s for sure, at Yosemite Lanes! I love that my adult handicapped daughter is able to share in the entire experience as well since they have an easy to use bowling ball ramp and bumpers that assist her in knocking down those pins! But let there be no mistake, I still had the high score in my competitive family that takes those bragging rights seriously! The kid’s zone has air hockey, virtual games, and yes there is even a pinball machine, another fav of mine from my youth! We love this place! For those 21 and older, the full bar hosts a daily happy hour from 2-6pm. You can shoot pool or throw darts for more lively adult entertainment! I also believe I saw enough space in there for a dance floor, too. Owner Jim Gordin really knows what it means
to have a good time! On New Year’s Day in 1999 he purchased this full scale food and fun center that caters to all ages. I love that we can go anytime for an outing or join a league for some friendly competition. It’s also a great place to have a birthday party no matter what the ages! Neighborhood goodness never goes out of style! So, when you are out cruising Modesto, remember this is one stop to add to your total American Graffiti experience! Modesto View’s signature question; Beatles or Stones? Cindy unequivocally stated “Stones” leaving me with a better understanding of why her food has the flavors so many of us just have to have! 2301 Yosemite Blvd. Modesto, CA 209-575-9519 Restaurant hours: 7 days a week 6am-10pm Bar hours: 7 days a week 2pm-2am (Happy Hour 2pm-6pm) Bowling hours: 6am-3am Closed only 2 days per year: Thanksgiving and Christmas

Unplugged Great Scott! by Aaron Rowan A dream came true for me recently, when I was invited to curate a portion of the lineup for the annual San Francisco Free Folk Festival. This has been my absolute favorite musical gathering to attend for the past two years, held on a huge middle school campus. There are Unplugged concerts and workshops in multiple classrooms, Contra and world folk dances in the gym, open mic sessions in the cafeteria; acoustic heaven. I’ve borrowed a number of acts I first encountered at FFF to perform at my own acoustic fest here in town. Now I am delighted to be able to return the favor by introducing one of our area’s youngest and brightest musical stars to them - last year’s “Valley’s Got Talent” winner Alida McKeon! Alida evokes the vintage feel of 1930’s lounge music with her classic and original ukulele tunes - I like to call her “Uke Ellington.” She will perform in a primetime slot on the lower level stage at this year’s Free
Folk, in its new venue at St. Cyprian’s Church in San Francisco. Saturday 6/20, make the drive out to the Bay for a whole day of beautiful music and dance. The festival runs from noon to 10 PM, and Alida can be found performing from 7:308:15pm, followed by my other contributions to the roster: Nevada City duo Halfpence & Haypenny (performing British, Celtic and original tunes), and Bay Area string sensations Dirty Cello with the closing set. Completely free and family-friendly! For more info, visit www.sffolkfest.org. Another great yearly tradition filled with music and festivities returns to Modesto this month - the 34th Annual Scottish Highland Games & Celtic Faire. Saturday June 6, Tuolumne River Park will be crawling with clan members, craft vendors and caber tossers. There’ll be Celtic folk dances, bagpipe contests, historical reenactments, athletic games and more. Our local friends in Cooking With Turf and Golden

Bough will be among those providing the musical entertainment. The fun goes from 9 AM to 5 PM. $15 admission, kids 10 and under free. Presented by the St. Andrews Society of Modesto. Modesto Unplugged Music has partnered up with ModestoView to bring you “Live In The Cellar”, a new concert series held in the cellar beneath Greens restaurant (953 10th St.). Friday 6/5, we welcome Faux Renwah, a beloved family band from California’s gold country. These multi-instrumentalists have an impressive repertoire of Old Time and original tunes, ranging from authentic Gold Rush songs of the 1850’s to favorites from the 1960’s and beyond, which they mix with a sprinkling of Irish and American fiddle tunes. Doors open at 7:00, concert at 8:00. General admission is $15, reserved seating $20. Call 209-543-5306 for tickets. Saturday 6/6, The Jimmy Grant Ensemble will perform at the Prospect Theatre, 1214 K St. The band performs in the style of Django Reinhardt, infusing swing era pieces, original work, and traditional gypsy tunes with the jazz guitar pioneer’s crunchy rhythms and hot harmonies. Jimmy’s style synthesizes a rich blend of Russian folk, bluegrass, celtic and classical music while remaining true to Django’s innovative guitar technique. The band will bring together two guitars, bass, and violin in an intimate yet energy-charged performance. Doors open at 7 and concert begins at 8; $10 admission. Tuesday 6/16 at the State Theatre, Square Peg and Sherpa Concerts present an evening with pop/R&B singer-songwriter Morgan James. She’s a classically trained Julliard graduate, Epic Records recording artist, and Broadway actress, who once lived in Modesto and is now based in NYC. Morgan is blessed with some pretty powerful pipes! I’m looking forward to enjoying this one. Doors at 7, show at 8; tickets are $20. Cross the county line on Sunday 6/21 to catch Birds Of Chicago at the Brice Station Winery in Murphys. This great globetrotting band crafts ‘rock-n-roll poetry’ with lots of folk instrumentation thrown in. Concert starts at 7 PM. General admission tickets $20, available at www.bricestation.com.

. .A .S U r e m m u Graffiti S by Chris Murphy
This is who we are Modesto USA. We need to let our Graffiti flag fly all year long and wel-
come this feeling that takes us back to the class of ’62. We need to tell our friends, our business travelers, our students, our senators and everyone that will listen, “ModestoUSA is the home of American Graffiti”. Thanks to Modesto native and very successful film maker George Lucas, American Graffiti made Modesto famous, and launched many film careers and a wave of nostalgia that we are still riding today. It is good for our soul, it is good for our economy and it makes us a special place that should be a destination for people around the world and Graffiti Summer is our time of the year. People from around the world come to Modesto to get their own slice of ModestoCana, feel our Graffiti spirit and be a part of our Graffiti Summer events. This is who we are so let’s celebrate being the birthplace of Graffiti, Modesto USA!
Gene Winfield
Beginning in a chicken coop converted to a garage on Modesto’s west side at 1309 Figaro Street, the legendary Gene Winfield honed his skills in designing amazing car creations and pioneered world-changing paint finishes and creating custom hot rods. His shop behind MJC at 451 Tully Road was the birthplace of some of the most famous car creations for TV and movies and even developed custom space ships for Star Trek. Modesto is still home to classic car customizer shops and newer shops like Neville Brothers, Burnside Body Shop, and Graffiti Classic Customs in Turlock. Customizing cars is in the blood and never fades and Gene Winfield is still active and cutting up cars and pushing his creations to the edge. Gene visits Modesto regularly and remains close friends with many Century Toppers. Gene will be attending the unveiling of the Walk of Fame for the Century Toppers on the 10th, will be a champion of the Kiwanis Cruise Parade on the 12th and he will even be chopping a car live at the Kiwanis American Graffiti Car Show on the 13th and 14th

The Chevrolet Impala is one of the most popular and recognizable lowrider cars.
Photos by Ruben J. Porras
“The lowrider car movement is focused on heritage and pride.” Think about what you have seen on television and in the movies and you will realize the effect that the lowrider car culture has had on society — Rapper, Ice Cube’s mega-hit “It was a Good Day” was shot on the streets on Los Angeles as he drove in a ’64 Impala, Benjamin Bratt hand-built his car in a San Francisco garage in La Mission and even Broadway got in on the action with Zoot Suit. That Broadway play was later adapted into a hit film. The culture surrounding lowrider cars is as colorful as the candy-painted rides that we see on the streets today. In the ‘50s and ‘60s custom car builders like Ed Roth were stripping cars of their bumpers and other parts they deemed unnecessary to make them lighter and figuring out new ways to suck out every ounce of horsepower that they could from what they were calling “Hot Rods.” At the same time, young Chicanos in Los Angeles were cruising Whittier Blvd in cars that appeared to have been dipped in glitter. These cars had plush velvet interiors, big stereos, murals painted on them that reflected Mexican
culture and custom wheels packed with shiny spokes. While those features turned heads, it was one feature of lowrider cars that made them particularly popular with both builders and fans. At some point during the early ’60s lowrider builders got their hands on airplane hydraulics and figured out how to retrofit them for cars. These systems allowed cars to ride as low as possible but still raise up at the flip of a switch to pass a police inspection or get over an obstacle in the road. Eventually, hydraulic systems began being used to make cars hop up and down. This dramatic yet playful action known as “hopping” changed the game forever and became a featured event on the streets and at car shows. Hopping reached as far as Japan where some of the most powerful and capable hydraulic systems for cars have been developed by Japanese youth looking to follow in the footsteps of their western counterparts. Today we see lowrider cars featured prominently at car shows and they have secured a place in mainstream culture. Even the prestigious Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles known to display some of the rarest cars in the world, featured a four-month
exhibit of lowrider cars in 2000. That display took a cue from the Smithsonian where a ’69 custom Ford lowrider was displayed in the early ‘90s. Here in the Central Valley, the lowrider culture is strong. Cruises and car shows are common and car owners are just as focused on being a family as they are with creating the coolest rides on the road. The elders in the mix encourage youth to opt out of gangs and focus on building something together that is real and special and fathers and sons work hand-in-hand on their project cars. “It is all about family,” said Sal Alvarez of Ceres. “My wife Maricella and I built our car together while she was pregnant with our son. It took a long time because it was all about stashing away nickels and dimes and getting things done step-by-step. This car is a part of our family, a part of our life.” That “nickel and dime” car that Alvarez mentioned has been featured all over the United States and in numerous magazines. If you see the shiny red ’54 Chevy Bel Air at a car show you can count on Sal’s son Xavier being nearby. Xavier never strays far from his dad or his culture.

Winfield Rocks! By Chris Murphy In 2012, Gene Winfield told me he was interested in custom making a guitar. He sketched it out on a piece of paper and immediately I said I wanted one. Over a year later, this amazing creation, Winfield Guitar #1 arrived at my office, autographed #1 Gene Winfield. The biggest surprise is that this guitar had already been played by the legendary bluesman Jimmie Vaughn and was also singed by him. Classic Cars and Hot Rods have always gone hand in hand with rock and roll and this is proof!

Bennie Furtado was born on August 3rd, 1930. He worked most of his life on the family dairy on Paradise Road. He worked hard during the day and enjoyed his evenings with friends, cars and chicks. In his late teens, Bennie became extremely obsessed with cars. Not racing cars, but custom cars, most customized by Gene Winfield thru the fifties. Later known as the American Graffiti era. Some of the cards he owned included a 1948 Ford chopped top. It has custom color called “blurple”.
from the day Burge’s opened until the day it closed in 1967. Gerry passed away June 8, 2011 and is remembered fondly by many of Modesto’s original cruisers. She is survived by her son Tony and daughter Debra. Burge’s and Gerry are a symbol of Modesto’s amazing cruising and Graffiti history.

Geraldine C. (Gerry) Ramirez was Modesto’s Carhop and Burge’s Drive in was the place that started it all. The unique round drive-in was a refreshing motorist beacon along Highway 99 in years after the end of the war, when car travel became popular. But in the evenings, Burge’s became a place for the youth of Modesto to hang out. The classes of ’47 to ’67 made the weekend evenings a happening place. ModestoView readers get an exclusive look at rare Burge’s photos thanks to the personal photo collection of Tony Ramirez, son of long time Burge’s carhop, Gerry Ramirez. Both of Tony’s parents worked at Burge’s. “It was a special time” Tony says, ”I had the most interesting childhood and my parents were amazing. The friends and family from those days were a special part of my life” Gerry and Tony Ramirez were at Burge’s from day one. Gerry, born in Tuttle, Oklahoma on 9-21-1926, has been immortalized in the few photos that exist of Burge’s. Tony was a soda jerk at Burge’s and kept the place moving fast and satisfying hungry customers. The carhops worked hard and long hours. They hustled and had to juggle the cars sometimes stacked 3-5 deep. Gerry was on the job

He also customized a 1950 Ford 2-door sedan. Many of his cars were displayed in local parades, car magazines and custom auto shows. Bennie also had a kind heart for friends and family. Upon his sister getting her driver’s license, he purchased a 1937 Ford for her and had it restored so she could drive to school. Needless to say, it was quite the conversation piece and she was very proud of it. After the Graffiti era faded, his fondness for cars became legendary. Bennie passed away on October 3, 1999 at the age of 69.
It was joyful time, and Charles was alive to re-live his young, carefree automotive days. It extended into his mid-years with both his sons, a trio cut form the same cloth. Charles became overjoyed when his oldest son won the Master Class of Best Custom at the Grand Daddy Oakdale Auto Show in 1979. Then his youngest son was honored and selected for the 1st full front page cover of a pickup truck by Peterson’s Four Wheel Drive Magazine in 1991, which was chosen over many custom cars.

The Walk of Fame is the latest addition to the Modesto Historic Cruise Route celebrating our “Legends of the Cruise”. Permanent sidewalk markers honor each of our “Legends. The very first cruise marker was presented to George Lucas during his appearance in Modesto for the Kiwanis Cruise Parade in 2013. In 2014 nine other markers joined George’s in a new special designated “Walk of Fame” that begins in 10th Street Plaza and will extend each year as new inductees are honored. These are our own hometown heroes. They shaped the lives of today’s generation and thanks to them, Modesto USA is known around the world for being the birthplace of American Graffiti. This is just the beginning and the Historic Cruise Route is just getting started. More events, Legend inductees and monuments and visitor experiences will be added each year for Graffiti Summer and new designs for a “retro 10th Street are being developed to make our Graffiti Story and benefit our local economy. Hopefully soon, we will have a Graffiti USA Museum. The 2015 Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame will be unveiled on June 10, during the Mid Valley Chevy Car show in 10th St place. The car show starts at 5:30 and the presentation event will begin at 6:30. The 2015 Inductees are the late Gerry Ramirez and Bennie Furtado along with Wendell Reed, Dennis Wilson, Charlie Reynolds and the speed shattering car club, the Century Toppers, represented by Gene Winfield, Bart Bartoni, and Pete Hischier. The mission of the Walk of Fame is to highlight the character and history of Modesto and educate and illuminate these stories to own citizens and visitors alike. The 2015 markers were donated and created by Chris Murphy, ModestoView, Sierra Pacific, and the hard work of Colin Sparkman and the DecoStone Concrete team along with United Signs and ColorCoat. I specially want to thank the City of Modesto, in particular Andy Johnson for making it easy to create these events and team with the city to make a positive change in our downtown. 2014 inductee Bart Bartoni
Dennis Wilson
Dennis Wilson was born and raised in Modesto in 1939. Dennis attended Enslen Elementary School, Roosevelt Junior High and then Thomas Downey High School, graduating in 1957. During his time attending Roosevelt, he passed by a 1931 Model A Vicky every day. One day while riding home from school, he saw a guy trying to pump up the tires on the Vicky. He stopped to talk with him and found out he was hoping to sell the A. The college student kept eyeing Dennis’ Dayton Bike and
asked if he would be interested in a trade for it. Dennis raced home to get the registration for the bike and hustled back before he changed his mind.Dennis and his father towed the car home and making Dennis the proud owner of his first car at 14! His second Model A was a coupe which sometimes didn’t have the wooden floorboard in place on the passenger side, which allowed for certain petroleum products to be discharged at the intersection of 10th & M. at Winfield’s Custom Shop at 451 Tully Road in the 50’s, and was able to tag along to some of the car shows. While attending MJC, his architectural drafting class project was the remodel of the fascia of 451 Tully Road. In exchange, Gene decided and built a custom front end for Dennis’ 1948 Mercury featuring ’59 Chevy quad headlights and nerf bars in place of the stock bumper. The Mercury was powered by a Chrysler engine.
The Century Toppers
The Century Toppers Auto Club, founded in 1947, was the first hot rod club formed in Modesto. It was started by a handful of local hot rodders, with Gene Winfield, a well known customer car builder, as one of the local hot rodders, with Gene Winfield, a well know customer car builder, as one of the founders and Robert Bryant as first secretary. The club’s objectives were to promote auto safety and to improve the image of the sport of hot rodding. The club quickly expanded to included members from surrounding cities like Riverbank, Ceres, Turlock, Patterson, Tracy, etc. In 1949 they put on one of the first auto shows
held in northern California. This show was at the local Ford garage, “Griswold & Wight”, December 10-11, 1949 and featured custom cars hot rods and motorcycles. The club also worked very closely with the California Highway Patrol. The clubs early meetings were held at the MJC Machine Shop. As the name implies, Century Topper cars were able to exceed the 100 MPH century mark. Club members Pete Hischier, and Bart Bartoni were induced individually to the Walk of Fame in 2014.

Rockabilly High and tights… by Jennifer Allsup High and tights… Executive Contours… Pompadours, and classic hot towel shaves are an everyday thing at Trevino’s Barber Shop & Shaving Parlor… and it’s all coming to downtown Modesto. This is the Rockabilly culture and it is uniquely Modesto’s culture and now it is coming to 909 10th St Located along 10th Street’s Historic Cruise Route, Trevino’s is housed in what used to be an old bank and was until recently an art gallery. It’s that small shop feel that you see pictures of – and hear stories about. “We have a classic environment that appeals to folks of all ages”, says owner Tony Trevino, “and I’m so excited to bring the shop downtown” all while he skillfully edges around a gentleman’s neckline with a straight razor, creating a neat and clean finish. “I have worked incredibly hard to be here – traditional barbering is a passion of mine, and I’m thankful to work on my craft with every cut!”
Trevino’s has grown from a one chair shop to three (within a 2 year time span), with the addition of Jessica Johnston and Ryan Byrum – both of which were handselected to join the team. Tony adds, “They are both bright, determined and incredibly skilled – we are very lucky to have them”. Trevino’s provides a convenient online appointment system that can be found on their website at www.trevinosbarbershop.com I have had many friends that went to spiff up their hair do’s and no one has walked away disappointed. Great, job Tony to you and your crew ! Look forward to you being in the downtown area. Not only is Tony the classic dapper barber, he is one of Modesto’s leading and most hard working Rockabilly musicians. This is the classic intersection of art/music/syle and history. Many of us Modestans attend our annual Graffiti cruise and car shows.
I suggest you go check out what other fabulous events are in store for Modesto in June. The State Theatre and Modesto View are bringing a night of Elvis. With many local talents Tony Trevino, Amie Alton, Mike Allsup, Third Party, Doug Robinett, Ron Meyer, Kent Whitt and the Downbeats, and Rob Ely on June 13th. Get your tickets, show at 7 pm. Metal The Yosemite Strip by Mike Vanek This month I would like to pay tribute to the heavy metal side of town, the Yosemite Strip. Gone are the days of going downtown for metal shows. Our metal scene was cast aside by the downtown venues, and left off their dance permits. Slowly but surely, metal bands transitioned to playing on Yosemite Ave. First at The Spinnaker Lounge, then Nic Padilla started having shows at Yosemite Lanes, and eventually we were welcomed at The Other Place (traditionally a country bar). Now all three venues regularly host metal bands and Yosemite Boulevard has been dubbed the “Metal Side of Town”. With 3 bars within walking distance, they have established a foundation for a vibrant heavy metal scene. Each bar has its own style and character. The Other Place hosts the larger shows with national bands and recently hosted Hatriot, M.O.D. & Ektomorf among others. The Spinnaker Lounge is the high church of Modesto metal and the home of Modesto’s very own heavy metal supporting bartender
Sylvia Spinnaker, and the majority of the 209’s metal scene has cut their teeth. Recently, Yosemite Lanes started having shows again and they are always FREE! Yosemite Lanes is a fun venue with cool people and drunk bowling is probably the funniest thing ever to watch. I highly encourage everyone to support all three of these rad venues that keep our scene alive! I have one last thing to talk about this month, and that is the announcement of the return of the legendary PRIMUS to the Graffiti City, Modesto USA. Although they are not really “metal”, they are one of the most original heavy bands of our time, and the last time they played here was just amazing! The show is September 1st at Modesto Center Plaza, and tickets are available at the plaza office on L street or select Boyett-Petroleum stations all around Modesto! That’s all for me this month as always: KEEP ONE FOOT IN THE GUTTER AND ONE FIST IN THE GOLD!

It was hot and he was late. He paid, got the keys, and slid into the driver’s seat, hoping the mechanic hadn’t left grease stains on the seat. She shuffled up, all bad teeth and street-beaten obeisance. “Can’t they keep these people out of here,” he thought. She wasn’t that old. She wore pink flip flops and the cuffs rolled up on her worn Levi’s. Her stringy hair was tied with a faded bandanna. Her eyes were a little off. She spoke, but he couldn’t hear her through the rolled-up glass. The automatic window wasn’t working that day either, so he opened the door a crack. “’Scuse me, I just need fifty cents,” she said. “For some milk.” “Right,” he thought, “if Gallo made milk.” “I’m sorry,” he said, smiling and waving his hand and wishing she were gone. He wasn’t sure why he rejected her request immediately. He almost always gave these people something. “How ‘bout fifteen cents?” “Sorry.” “Five cents. Anything.” “Sorry,” and he closed the door. She shrugged and stutter-stepped off to ask the young Mexican man who was busy cleaning up behind the garage. She followed him around, hand outstretched. He didn’t even look at her. She gave up and disappeared around a corner. Out of sight, out of mind. He stowed everything away, happy to be back in the familiar territory of his car. He started to check his cell phone for messages when a shadow darkened the screen. She was back. She held out her weather-wrinkled hand. “Fifteen cents,” she said. “I got fifteen cents.” She smiled and fluttered away toward the convenience store across the street. He pulled out and headed home. He was listening to his cell messages and never saw the truck that ran the red light.

Jazz & Blues What’s new with Jazz and the Blues News by Eric Benson Well, I have been living in the downtown with so much to do! Lila Downs, Bonnie Rait, Bos Scaggs and Peter Framptom coming up. It’s live Day on the Green with no green, and a muchappreciated seat to enjoy the show. Yes, we are getting older and standing in a stadium for hours listening to live music is a joy of a bygone era. I personally like the small venues best with Barkin’ Dog Grill with Blues, Brews to Jazz, and Green’s basement venue with recent show promoted by John Griswold, and Café Urbano now opening its doors to live music, and on a sleepy Sunday morning you can hear Patty Castillo playing a breakfast gig at Deva Café. All Ages When I Think of Summer
Present s
by Leia Johnson When I think of summer I think of picnic blankets, cheese platters, my friends, and live music. Where can you find all of these glorious things? That’s right! Concert in the Park. Starting on June 4th and ending on July 9th, spend your Thursday evenings at Graceada Park! Live music will be played and tons of people will be together. It’s a great place to socialize with friends or potential friends. Another place you can socialize is at The State Theatre’s screening of American Graffiti on June 6th! Doors open at 2 and the Film begins at 3. Before the show begins you can purchase a delicious root beer float! Also before the screening begins, Kent Whitt and his band (The Downtown Beats) will be playing some 50’s/60’s music. Admission is only $3 so bring your kids, friends, neighbors and everyone in between! It’s going to be a ton of fun in one of Modesto’s well loved Theatres! My dad is in a rocking band called Third Party!
They were recently featured in the Stanislaus Magazine, so if you haven’t checked that out, I recommend that you do. They are playing at Modesto’s “Elvis Tribute Show” June 13th at The State, a show that you won’t want to miss. Another thing I love to do in the summertime is go to Blueberry Bluff. I’ve gone with family, friends, and my 3 year old cousin, so it’s definitely an all ages activity. We go out into the field and turn off our phones and pick blueberries together. The price for the blueberries is unbeatable and the taste is the best! For more information visit www.blueberrybluff.com Make sure that you check the dates and times that it is open before visiting.

Fit Leave Your Fears at the Seashore by Efren Martinez The benefits of open-water swimming are many if you can just get past the fear that goes along with it. Swimming at your local gym’s pool is much safer after all, you’re in a heated pool with a lifeguard on hand. In fact, the biggest danger you might encounter there is a child’s “Baby Ruth” floating by you during your swim. As a Tri-Athlete the best swimming conditions are in the ocean or a lake. I prefer the ocean by far, but it can be dangerous. In the ocean you may share the water with more then just a few jet skies and boats, you share it with a vast amount of sea creatures that can bite, sting or even eat you. Within the last 8 years, I’ve traveled to many beaches for some of this great open-water training. One of the most dangerous bodies of water is the San Francisco Bay. Although not very publicized, it is a nursery for sharks including Great Whites. But no worries, they generally only feed on crabs and
fish until they get to be around 6 feet in length, at which time they make their way out to the open ocean. Just recently I made my way to Cabo for my annual swim across the Sea of Cortez to Lands End. While I was there I did manage to avoid getting eaten by a sea creature, but could not avoid being stung. By now, I know it’s what I can expect when I train there. The stings mostly came from Jellyfish, and I’m also guessing Pufferfish. When you get stung you will definitely feel it, as it is equivalent to being stung by a wasp. But they just don’t sting you once, they sting you multiple times. Regardless, I’ve become immune to the sting over the years and my biggest advice is that you don’t panic and just keep swimming. The benefits of openwater training for me personally outweighs the dangers.

In the ocean, I find I’m much faster than in the pool or lake. The sea’s saltwater keeps me more buoyant than a pool, where my body sinks like a rock. The other benefits of swimming in the ocean are that you continuously have to fight the chilly choppy ocean currents, as well as the thought that at any given time a sea creature can bite, sting or eat you, both are quite motivationg factors. By now you’re probably wondering with so many dangers, why do I enjoy it so much? Perhaps it’s just the way I and many other Tri-Athletes are wired. Despite having so many sea creatures come upon me over the years, such as Humpbacks, Giant Squids and Orcas; I find it less of a danger than training on my road bike. This open-water conditioning is vital for any type of competition that requires you to leave your fears at the shore. If you are not mentally ready, your own uncertainties
may get the best of you and take you down to Davy Jones Locker. June Preferred Fitness Event Merco 5K & Half Marathon www.runningmerced.com

the right partner, a nice place to live, and to enjoy health and happiness. The faster this can be accomplished the better. In the pursuit of success, we may feel either like winners or losers. The question is what does success mean to you? Some thirty years ago, fate brought me to a T’ai Chi class. At the time it felt like something “off the beaten path”, which this ancient art truly is. The underlining philosophy of T’ai Chi is Taoism. The meaning of Tao is the Way. What counts is not the end product but the process. It is a journey of self-discovery. None of the rules and values that I had been accustomed to apply in the world of T’ai Chi. I was supposed to move slowly instead of fast. To cooperate with others rather than compete with them, to become calm instead of being busy, silent instead of talkative. I had to learn to surrender my ego instead of being self-righteous and opinionated. Little by little my hardness and tension lessened. This took a long time! But the Path, the process of learning so much on so many different levels, is well worth it. When I practice T’ai Chi I regain in a relatively short time what I may have lost in the course of

My legs feel stronger, my muscles have been stretched and loosened, and I feel once again connected with the earth under me and my surroundings. The tingling in my fingertips and the warm fullness throughout my body tell me that circulation of blood and oxygen is really happening. It’s a subtle and wonderful sensation. I feel young and alive. There is a sense that time does slow down if I follow, at least from time to time, the Great Tao. What could following the Tao do for you?
