This is my favorite time of the year. I love Graffiti Summer. It brings back the memories of those weekends in high school and the summer fun for me and many of the cruisers and the classic car owners here in Modesto USA each year. From the class of ’45 through today, so many memories and so much to celebrate. As you will read from Eli Lester in our interview this month, this is not just about cars and history, it is about art and this is an important part of Modesto’s identity. Graffiti lives today as it is a true work of art to create a classic car and the art and music that surround it will never die. Classic music, classic cars and our classic ModestoCana way of life are what we are made of and this is a huge part of our future. It is up to us to engage the next generation and make this a big part of who we are. I made a quick trip to Disneyland in May with by daughter Abigail. It is mind blowing that it has been absolutely taken over by StarWars. Yes, the very Star Wars that was created by Modesto native George Lucas. We are in fact the #homeofstarwars and we should be very

proud. We celebrated the May the 4th “Star Wars Day” and we now look to how we can celebrate this year round, just like we want to do with Lucas’ other milestone film American Graffiti. Two of the most popular films of all time, have direct ties and influences from Modesto USA. Seriously, how cool is this? Now we need to work together to make sure we make the most out of this. Oh yeah, while we are on the Disney subject, CarsLand is essentially a model for how we should work with 10th and 11th Streets downtown. Imagine if you will, a district dedicated to the themes of classic cars, Modesto of the

’40 & 50’s, celebrating the music and the classic cars that inspired American Graffiti and surround it with classic local homegrown cuisine and cocktails. There is even a new 10th St Night Market starting June 2. You can stroll the Historic Cruise Route and the Walk of Fame while you are there. This makes so much sense. But wait, there’s more! Don’t forget that Rockabilly Music was born here in Modesto USA back in ’38 and it is alive and rockin’ today and we will be bringing cars, pin-ups, music, art and fun to the Greasers Social Ball on June 18. This is free for the whole family in downtown Modesto’s 10th St Plaza. We hope to see all of you there and meet up with you. Ride your bike, drive your car and cruise on down. The Graffiti Cruise Parade is on June 10th and stay down after the cruise because there will be an All-Star Elvis Tribute extravaganza in 10th St Place that is Free. Living here is fun, let’s make the most of it and invite the rest of the world to share it with us. Become a CASA Volunteer and be rewarded with some of the most fulfilling experiences you can find. By Maryann Spikes Cleansing Hope Shower Shuttle makes Modesto beautiful by finding a need and filling it Nothing like a hot shower when you’re grimy to give you a fresh outlook on the day, right? I was honored to interview #GreatNeighbors Dean Dodd and Doran and Kelli Ott of Church in the Park (CitP) about the latest need they and others on the CitP team are filling: the Cleansing Hope Shower Shuttle (CHSS). Watch our full interview and walk-through of the CHSS in the online version of this article: https://youtu.be/MVPlxmqlrDo The guests most likely to use the CHSS are parents living out of cars and trying to keep things as normal as possible for their kids, unemployed veterans just needing a shower before heading out to a job interview, and folks not willing to part with their animal or opposite-sex friend so they can get a shower in

the shelter. Some highlights from our walk-through of the shuttle include donated Scorpion non-slip surfacing, ADA-compliant wheelchair-accessible showers, predictable scheduling and strategic locations, and timers that show the time limits counting down about 10 minutes for self-initiated showering, and 25 minutes overall once the curtain is drawn. Disinfecting. After I shared our interview on Facebook, I learned that between each shower there will be a disinfecting process using a top-of-the-line, non-toxic sterilizer called Vitol Oxide. Though expensive, Vitol Oxide is completely green and hospital-friendly. That’s why Lava Mae, the nearest shower shuttle in San Francisco, uses it. Water pressure and conservation. The CHSS is equipped to conserve water with donated and locally invented High Sierra showerheads. Although the brisk spray will easily rinse even long hair, these showerheads only use 1.5 gallons of water per minute, or 15 gallons for a 10-minute shower. Collaboration. Congregation Beth Shalom, 1705 Sherwood Ave, Modesto The Center for Jewish Life in Modesto, has announced their plans for a new Jewish food and cultural celebration called Shalom Deli. The event will include kosher pastrami sandwiches available as boxed lunches to-go or with an eat-in option. There will also be a Bake Sale, Gift Shop with an extensive selection of Judaica items, a bouncy house for children, Sanctuary Tours, and live Hebrew music. This event is a new format of the congregation’s very popular Café Shalom event which will return next year with an expanded holiday and international menu of Jewish cuisine in addition to other new features. Shalom Deli, which is a fundraiser for the congregation’s Hebrew School youth programs, will cost $15. with the Homelessness Action Council by filling the need of data showing upticks or downticks in homelessness. They hope to earmark some of the monies donated to the CHSS to obtain birth certificates and I.D.s so guests are able to access social services. The CHSS will also be listed on various City and County resource lists. The CHSS meets a need that is not filled by other service providers in most parts of Modesto, but also strategically partners with those providers (not in parks, by the way) so they fill in each other’s gaps. “If you want to go fast, go alone. ART Pick and Gather Festival by Jim Christiansen June in Modesto usually involves cars, crowds, food, drink and for me, a trip South to Livingston to show art, set the stage, and work the Pick and Gather Festival at Riverdance Farms, the first weekend after Memorial Day. Artists Patrick Barr and Kristi Moore join us this year, with art for sale, and kid’s workshop in cartooning. We also do fish printing, Fun with Clay, and more. A Full day 10am to Dusk of Music, with Bluegrass, Poorhouse Millionaires, Red Pony, and Faux Renwah on Laid Back Sunday, the Pick and Gather is an eclectic festival, on the Merced River with U-Pick organic blueberries and more. It’s a kind of performance art, middle of Spring Harvest organic farm festival. All ages, more information www. Riverdancefarms.com June 4 & 5. But Graffiti Summer also means usual call from Minnie’s for Tee Shirt design for the June 10 cruise night at one of the best traditional spots

to view cars rolling by. This year I did two designs, the usual McHenry Avenue view, with classic Roadrunner, and the Back Door parking lot view, all Minnie’s regulars recognize. VIP tickets got the back door view. When this June fun is all over, I’ll finish the painting of the Minnie’s back-side view. Art Walk resumes June 16. I like the addition of on-street music, but think they should have some art on easels where they set up. Car art would be good this month. There’s been talk of a Thursday Night Farmers Market starting up, including Art Walk night, and I know Ralston’s Goat will follow Art Walk with late night comedy show 10 to Midnight. The Art Walk passports seem to be getting stamped, but haven’t heard of winners for dinner and a movie. This month I went early to the Big Valley Academy student display at Mistlin, Clay Bedford’s art at Barking Dog, Spring display at Chartreuse Muse, Chelsea America watercolors at Preservation Coffee, and new railroad theme art at Che’root. Sandude Opens Brand New Tap Room by Christopher Mitchell and Brandilyn Brown

growing and getting back its glamor. One of store fronts 11th Street can boast about now is Sandude’s first tap room. Yes, first. There are more coming, but Modesto is proud to be the city that John & Janette Freitas have chosen to launch in. Not only are Modestans thirsty for good brew, the city worked with them to get them here. It only three weeks from plan to permit, and they were off building cabinets & painting. The bars have purse holders, laptop & phone charging stations, so you can stay connected to everything while you’re here. The beachy, rustic taproom is decorated with nods of family history, such as the retired license plates on the bathrooms “SANDUDE” and “SANDGRL”. With 17 beers on tap (12 to be Sandude, 5 to be rotated spotlighting other breweries), there will be something for everyone. The Woody Brown Ale was our favorite. Get a flight to try several and pick your favorite. Once you have found your favorite beer, then you can really enjoy this place. Don’t let the fact they are not a restaurant put you off: You can bring in whatever you want to eat. Want to order pizza? Do it. Want to bring in a picnic lunch for a romantic date? Do it. Why? “We want our guests to enjoy their favorite food, while enjoying their favorite beer.” Said Janette. Now that is tagline to celebrate. MV: How did you get your name? John: We used to ride three wheelers and quads on Pismo Beach, and one day I’m just standing on this hill of sand, and a friend said, “Hey Sandude!” and it stuck. MV: How did you get started? John: A friend gave me a mutual friend’s craft beer to taste, and I really enjoyed it. So I went over and we brewed together once. That is all it took, that one time, and I wanted to brew commercially from then on. I jumped right in! I do all the brewing myself, and I’ve got some recipes in the works that we will feature seasonally, like a jalapeño and a mango. MV: Go big or go home, right? Those sound delicious and we are looking forward to them!

This wine is going places, so keep an eye on them. MV: What inspires you? JT: Learning something new. We regularly have staff meetings where we try new wines, locally and from all over the world, sometimes blending wines from our cellar and we talk a lot about the contributing or differentiating elements. I recently took some time off to brew some beer, and even found inspiration for wine there. You never know where you will find creativity. Wine is certainly my passion and I approach it intuitively, very similar to cooking, tasting it the whole way through. MV: What is it about the Chocolate Port that is so addicting? JT: We use the best Italian chocolate you can find. It’s fermented in the wine, so it’s in there the entire process. We made a pump to constantly move the wine around while it’s fermenting so that the chocolate really comes out, but is not bitter or strong. Brandi calls this “Cherry Garcia in a bottle”, so if you love chocolate, pick up a bottle of this.

We’re on our third bottle already! Try it over ice cream, it’s amazing! Join the craze. Sip on, friends!

Yes, the American Graffiti spirit is alive and well in Modesto, and our surrounding communities. I grew up in the Bay Area and we used to have a great cruise strip on E. 14th Street in San Leandro (oh I have stories!!), a mirror image of what was once going on in Modesto. My youngest daughter Scarlett, 18, is graduating this year from Oakdale High and knows the nostalgia of this simpler time and of course the American Graffiti traditional diet of burgers, shakes & fries. Scarlett, like her Mom, is a very picky eater and I do have to cater to her palate otherwise she simply won’t eat it! So stubborn and yet so smart as she’s leaving for Southern A&M Tech in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in August where she’ll start college as a pitcher to live her softball dreams. So proud of her! But inside I’m crying like a baby as I will miss her terribly. Not often, but I do get her to work with me in the kitchen, she’d rather just meet me at the table! I let her create her idyllic burger and it was awesome to watch her eyes light up as she was licking her lips in anticipation! The Scarlett Burger: Ground sirloin oval shaped patty cooked medium well, seasoned with garlic powder & black pepper. Grilled sourdough. Thick crispy Applewood smoked bacon. Two slices of cheddar cheese. Add sliced avocado and tomato! I’m not a fan of tomatoes or avocado, so I’d go with some arugula

The ModestoView Clean Comedy Competition in partnership with the Gallo Center was a huge success. Our local comedians blew the roof off with laughter and the winner was our very own Anthony K. We want our locals to be seen on the national stage and this is how we do it. This month we take comedy to a new level with new shows and a very special showcase event at Cheroot with a 3 day gig by Anthony K and friends. You will laugh nonstop. Let’s get to know Anthony K and see what is cooking in his world. Q: Are you naturally funny or do you have to work on it? A: Its definitely a balance of both, Sometimes I do feel that it comes natural and this is what I’m supposed to do, But you cant be in this business without working insanely hard, Its like an internship with no promise of anything coming out of it except your passion and self reflection. I still try and get on a mic 6 days a week if possible even if I’m not booked, I want to be the best at what I do and I want it to show through my work. Q: What do you find unusual and what inspires you? A: What inspires me are the people close to me in my life, family and friends. Also audiences nightly that come to see live comedy, I love when people after a show tell me they have never seen stand up comedy before and that they really enjoyed it. What I find unusual in this stand up comedy world is many things. One that comes to mind, In this business, the people that book comedians or in places of power aren’t funny people. They’ve never gone

on a stage before and made anyone laugh or feel anything with their own thoughts and expressions, And sometimes these are the first people to tell you how to be funny or the direction you should go. This always baffles me. Q: How can we make Modesto a comedy town? A: I think this a great start, The local media should be covering these things and events, I’ve been doing comedy for almost 8 years and have traveled from L.A. to New York and I can honestly say that Modesto has amazing audiences. As a comedian we have a responsibility to make sure if we put on a show that we book the best comedians and put on the best show possible for the people that do support so that they will come back and have a good experience with comedy. Q: Tell us about your show June 24-26 A: These shows are very special to me, I’m out of town a lot and I always want to perform in my hometown, So once a year I usually do one giant show (Past shows have been at Gallo Center, Fat Cat & State Theater). This year is going to be different. I wanted this to be an intimate show in a smaller setting with more options instead of 1 night only at Cheroot Cigar Lounge in Downtown Modesto on 10th St. A lot of people don’t event know this lounge exists, which is part of its charm. I also run a free show there where I showcase other comedians 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month. This is a Cigar lounge, so if smoke bothers you this may not be the place for you. I will be headlining which means doing a 1 hour performance each night. There are only 40 seats available per show. ARCHITECTURE Cruise out, and Drive in! by Barrett Lipomi

June Movies When you are out cruising the streets of Modesto this month in your classic car, what better place to meet up with friends than a drive-in restaurant. You can get some great food while showing off your ride. This has been a local tradition dating back to the early days of cruising during Graffiti summer. In fact, drive-in restaurants in Modesto predate the Graffiti Era. One of the earliest drive-in restaurants documented in Modesto was the Reed & Bell Stand downtown that was built in 1925. The early drive-ins were not what one would call great works of architecture and were built to serve a function and not much more. However, by the time we got to the late 40’s it seemed that our car culture started to have an influence on drive-in architecture. Suddenly drive-ins became these bold, futuristic buildings with curving glass facades and glowing neon signs. These buildings were fantastic and part of a growing architectural trend called “Googie” architecture. One of Modesto’s best examples of a Googie style drive-in was Burge’s Drive-In, built in 1947, that once stood on the corner of 9th and O streets downtown. Although many of our historic drive-ins are unfortunately no longer standing, we do still have several drive-ins to enjoy including A & W downtown on 14th and G which is Modesto’s oldest remaining drive-in. Among others, Scenic Drive-In serves up some great burgers, and Sonic Drive-In on McHenry has become a popular place for classic cars to gather during Graffiti summer and even feature carhops on roller skates. So as you cruise out this month, be sure to drive in and continue this great tradition!

UNPLUGGED Sweet Summer Music By Lisette Sims An incredible summer is just ahead, full of great live performances and exciting community events! Lester. Eli is an accomplished Lubrication Consultant with Hydrotex and amazing family man, but most people know Eli as one of the best guitarists in the region, many have taken lessons from him and they see his incredible classic cars. Some of the most famous people have had Eli help customize their vehicles, including Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top and the legendary Gene Winfield. Eli believes in this classic art of car customization and he puts the same amount of love into it that he does his work, family or music. From the blues, rockabilly, to chrome, steel and environmental lubricants, Eli is the classic Graffiti renaissance man. Born and raised here in Modesto, Eli went to Davis his and got he degree from San Francisco State. Eli lives life surrounded by his wife Jaci and their kids, classic cars, station wagons and the most beautiful vintage guitars and his custom cars. And for a super cool Eli Lester fun fact, Gene Winfield is his wife Jaci’s uncle. How cool is that? Let’s meet Eli. ModestoView: What did you learn to love first, music or cars? Eli Lester: Definitely music. I played in bluegrass bands with my dad since I was 9 years old and have always been on stage since then. MV: What is the first song you learned to play? EL: Thrill is gone by BB King. As soon as I heard that I was hooked on blues guitar and knew that’s what I wanted to do. MV: Who was your inspiration for your car customizing? EL: All of the old school custom car builders. Sam Barris, Larry Watson and of course, Gene Winfield. MV: What was one of the first things you learned from Gene Winfield? EL: “Everyday is a school day” is Gene’s favorite motto. MV: Do you think that music and cars go hand in hand? EL: Absolutely, I don’t know why guitars and Hot Rods are so synonymous with each other. Look at Jeff Beck and Danny Gatton they would build hot rods all day then play guitar at night. MV: How cool is it that Rockabilly was born here in Modesto back in 1938?

EL: Modesto has so many cool heritages. American Graffiti is still my kids’ favorite movies. We’ve had so many great musicians and artists come out of Modesto. My wife and I love Modesto, which is why we still live here. I travel

a lot between work and gigs but am always happy to come home. MV: What is the coolest car you have ever customized?

EL: That’s a tough one. I have a chopped 49 Chevy coupe which I love. I’m currently building a chopped 50 Mercury which I’m sure will be my #1 as soon as it’s finished. MV: Can people who are not raised on cars, get excited and get involved? EL: Definitely! Especially in Modesto between the graffiti cruises and car shows we have it’s almost hard not to be involved. It’s part of our culture. MV: Who would you most like to share the stage with? EL: Oh man, that’s like asking what’s your favorite food or drink!? An all-star band with McCartney, Beck & Clapton would be pretty hard to beat. MV: What do you say to the next generation about the importance of classic cars and music? EL: Art is Art. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing music, writing a song or customizing a car, there is nothing better than creating or honing your skills with your craft. Make yourself uncomfortable and try to be unique. MV: What’s the future of the American Graffiti heritage? EL: Keeping the car culture alive. It’s not just about the cars or owning one. The most fun I’ve had is getting together with your buddies on the weekend and all pitching in on someone’s project. Some of the best times have been helping one of my buddies finish their car before a big car show or cruise. There is nothing more enjoyable then throwing your family and some friends in a hot rod and just going for a cruise. That’s what American Graffiti was all about. MV: Do your kids share the same passion you have for this? EL: Yeah, Anyone that knows me knows my kids are all about hot rods. They are always in the shop pitching in and keeping me straight. MV: Describe the perfect Eli Lester day. EL: Spending time with the family, playing with hot rods then cruising out to play a blues gig. I’m pretty consistent but you don’t hear me complain very often. MV: Finally, our signature question. Beatles or Stones? EL: Although, I’ve seen the Stones more times than I can count I have to say The Beatles.

Don Monaco

American Graffiti Festival Cruise Parade 2016 Grand Marshall

Don Monaco is one of the fastest men in Modesto. Don Monaco has been racing fast all of his life. Don’s first car was a Model T that be bought when was 12 for $ 7. Son of a peach farmer, Don was a self starter all of his life and a after a stint in the Navy, founded Don’s Mobile Glass, taking the car glass service out of the shop and on the streets. Don was a racer and a cruiser and knew all of the best Modesto hangouts like the Bamboo Room, Jack’s, the Patio and others, and had a ring-side seat to some of the cruise excitement. During the early 60s, Don Monaco along with the late Chuck Billington and late Jack McCoy would set up a racing partnership that would ultimately win a land speed record on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Don is also an acrobatic pilot and has been seen doing spirals and loops in the Modesto sky. Friends with 2015 Cruise Parade Grand Marshall and fellow legend Bart Bartoni, Don was part of Bart’s Godfathers crew in the 70s, named for the restaurant over Bartoni Jewelers. Don is still an active racer, and is currently tuning up his “High-Boy” land speed record car to head off to do the Hot Rod Hillclimb race in Colorado. He will pull it all the way there behind his ’49 Cadillac. Don has been married to his wife Gloria for 28 years and they have been known to get in his plane and pick a direction and just fly and stay wherever they land, where they now have friends all over the USA.

When I approached George Lucas a few years ago about getting involved in the Modesto Historic Cruise Route, I explained that our mission was to tell the stories behind the story that he told. Our efforts here in ModestoUSA are to share the people and the places that were the inspiration for Lucas’ milestone film that has made Modesto USA a popular part of pop culture. You can walk the Cruise Route and watch videos from the Legends of the Cruise and see our Walk of Fame markers in 10th Street Plaza. Glen Wild – Oakdale High School ‘61

Every classic car needed a flashy paint job. Over the years, Glen has pinstriped at least 20,000 cars and back in the day . and Glen’s hand painted work adorned many a classic car. Yes, this line was immortalized by Joe played by Bo Hopkins in the film American Graffiti as he convinced Glen was part of the original cruise back in the late 50s and Curt (Richard Dreyfus) to become a member of the Pharoahs. Modesto’s own Faros were the inspiration for early 60s and was always artistic. Glen started “pinstriping” cars for extra money in this “car club fraternity”. The FAROS were born in the same house in 1957 as the Ecurie AWOLS, Lucas’ race college and his goal was to “enhance the car, but not be the first thing you see”. The fine import car club as AWOL founder Chuck was the brother of Dennis Billington, founding FARO along with stripes, flames, scallops and more found their way to cars all over California and would Harry James and Maurice Clark. They first tried to start a club they called the FAROS Fraternity at Modesto become part of classic car hot rod history and would later become a key accessory on cars High School. That initial effort was squashed by the Dean of Boys, Paul Whitmore. He threatened to expel in the 70s and 80’s. He attended both MJC and CSU Stanislaus where he earned his BA in all of them if they started the club. Therefore that first group only lasted about 2 months but they came up 1973. He would later start Wild Signs in 1973 and continued to do custom work through with the name FAROS and the FRS Crest. In 1960, when they got to MJC, the FAROS were restarted, sort the 90s. His artwork and car art were very popular throughout the evolution of the cruise of. Five or six of the guys met at Joe Wyle’s house and talked about starting the club at Modesto Junior Coland where a big feature in the huge cruising years of ’78, ’79 and into the ‘80s. He also lege, in hopes that the strict rules in high school would not be existing. Dennis Billington said he could get created the art for many of the Graffiti Night events and activities. They weren’t college kids, they were just guys who got together and worked on cars (with a few parties thrown in here and there). And the rest is history.

Frank Burnett - Patterson High School

One of the most treasured classic cars on the circuit today is the ’40 Kaleidoscope Koupe that is owned by Frank Burnett. Frank’s collaboration on his ’40 Ford Coupe with Gene Winfield, converted his sweet black car into the Kaleidoscope wonder that it is today. Frank grew up in Patterson, working at Patterson Frozen Foods. He loved motorcycles and horses and could even stand on horseback while the horse ran at full gallop. Since 1955, Frank has been part of the cruise with his drive in restaurant out on Crows Landing road “Burnett’s” he owned with his wife Louise whom he married in ‘53. It featured car-hop service with seating inside as well. Even during the 40s, Frank had his first hot rod at 13 and his drivers license at age 14. It was a big attraction located in the Caruso Center for many years. Frank was a member and president of the Modesto motorcycle club and lead many events and road trips. Frank was also a champion NASCAR racer with a car he purchased from Richard Petty and he raced locally with #43, winning the Stockton 99 championships many times, racing against his friend Jack McCoy. Frank lives in Modesto and is still married to Louise and shows his ’40 Kaleidoscope Koupe when ever he can.

MAMA Celebrating 17 Years by Middagh Goodwin

Fumes from Graffiti are in the air and things are heating up in the Valley. You know what that means; it is time for everyone to let us know who you think should be considered for a Modesto Area Music Award. The MAMAs will be celebrating 17 years, and have grown from 7 to 20 statues being handed out, along with the mini MAMAs that were introduced in 2015. This is the Area Music Awards so that means bands, promoters, venues, comedians, etc. from the greater 209 are all eligible for consideration. You can see a full list of categories at www.modestoareamusic.com. Plans are for voting to go Live on August 21st the day after X-Fest, and that means that we do not have much time to narrow-down the list to 10. Over the last few years the MAMA board has increased the number of things they look at in considering who to choose. An online presence

is key, along with being active in the area, how many fans and more. The MAMAs will be held at the State Theatre on October 11th and as always will feature the most diverse performances at any event held in the 209 from Youth Bands to Metal, Latin to Jazz including the proverbial kitchen sink. Everyone is encouraged to dress up and remember this is a way for us all to come together for one night as a music and arts community. It is a night to support each other and have fun: win or lose. Get out and catch some live music, attend some of the great events happening around the 209. Go out to a restaurant, cafe or bar that you have never been to that host live music. As another hot summer approaches the valley. This is where I start dreaming of that beautiful 1960 Lincoln Continental Mark V convertible, cruisin’ down to the 10th Street plaza for the Greaser’s Social Ball. I’m so excited for all this talent for a free show on a beautiful summer day. John Clifton from Fresno a blues harmonica player, guitarist and vocalist. John and his band will be the backup band for one of his favorite harp and piano players Rod and Honey Piazza.John also has another treat in store playing alongside Rusty Zinn, his favorite guitar player. Rusty’s soul is reggae with ska beats and rock-n-roll. I have a feeling this is going to be amazing to watch. OHHH! One of the highlights will be the The Heebie Jeebies, a ghostly, country, goth and rockabilly combo Featuring Tony Trevino of Trevino’s Barber Shop. I am a huge fan of all Tony’s musical endeavors. BLUES Car Shows and Outdoor Parties by Earl Matthews Hello everyone! I hope you have enjoyed this spring as much as I have and that you are ready for all the great car shows and outdoor parties that are coming this month. There are some really cool shows happening, and I don’t really have enough room to talk about them all so I am going to select a couple and ask that you check out the calendar to see what else is going on in the local blues scene for June. Starting with a bang is a great band from the Sonora area the Little Fuller band. On June 2nd they are releasing their second CD at Black Oak Casino. They are not a blues band, I tell you this because I write the blues column but I am writing about them anyway. This should tell you how much I dig this band. They are fun, high energy and have killer music, great songs and a couple of the best singers around. No joke, if you don’t know about this band, get to knowing. They play a lot locally and that is a

good thing for us the listeners. The Pick and Gather Fest is on the 4th and 5th in Livingston at Riverdance Farms. There will be music, hayrides, games and activities for the kids, lots of art and last but not least cherries and blueberries that you and your family can pick yourself. Poorhouse Millionaires will be on stage 1ish on Saturday afternoon. On Grafitti night June 10th after you watch the drag you can come down to the TIlted Turtle and catch Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame playing some blues for you and all of your friends. The biggest event I have to tell you about this month is called the Greasers Social Ball on June 18th on the 10th St Plaza. This free event will feature some truly great rockabilly and blues acts from near and far. John Clifton Blues Band, Rod & Honey Piazza, Rusty Zinn, Heebie Jeebies, Grease Hound and Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame. There will also be a car show, The Luscious Ladies Pin-up Review, arts and crafts and a whole lot more. Fun for the whole family and that’s a pretty cool deal for free. Last on my list for June, My friend Melissa Ruth is coming back to town and we are going to do some shows together. Her new project is called the Midnight Darlins and the band consists of

Melissa and her husband Johnny Leal. Johnny was a founding member of the original Cryin’ Shame back in 2001. Poorhouse Millionaires will be sharing the bill with The Midnight Darlins at the Gypsy Shack on Thursday June 23rd. Then Friday with the Cryin’ Shame at the Torch Club. Finishing things up back in Modesto on Saturday night at Cafe Deva with the Midnight Darlins and the Cryin’ Shame. I hope you all have a great month and I hope to see you out at a show.

FIT Dusty Bottoms Trail Runners by Efren Martinez Originally founded in 2013 by a group of friends that ran together on the weekends, this is not your ordinary running club. All of their members have a laid back view on running. This means less to do with “tempo runs” & “fartleks” and more about trail runs, dusty bottoms and brewery’s after the their runs. This would explain why the Dusty Bottoms running club has grown to be one of the most popular running clubs in our area. After speaking with the President of the club, Jeff Rowe, I quickly learned that stepping out of the norm from any other club is what also makes them so popular. The Dusty Bottoms club welcomes everyone, all runners, walkers and cyclists, and they are not age restricted, so any age can join. Heck, from what Jeff tells me, “we’ve even had someone out on a pogo stick. No joke.” The Dusty Bottoms Running Club has grown tremendously since they’ve started, but they are still very proud that they’ve managed to maintain their “team” atmosphere. Proudly,

whenever all the members show up for a race or go on a training run out of town, you hear a lot of “Go DB!”. Their logo is pretty recognizable and is becoming well known at local races as well as around the running trails locally. In fact you can’t miss who’s a Dusty Bottom member at a race/run. They all have the reputation of being the loudest and most spirited people on any course anywhere. The group is

When asked what age group he recommends to go to games, he says “Families, teens, kids, grandparents and anyone who wants to have a classic American night”. Modesto is extremely fortunate to have our own baseball team and stadium. I’m sure that everyone has a fond memory from John Thurman Field. In 2008, I got to “meet” my favorite book character, Junie B. Jones. The Nuts are always hosting family events throughout the year. Saturday, June 11th is ‘Princess Night’, including a meet and greet with princesses followed by a firework show. Saturday, June 18th, go check out the car show during their ‘Graffiti Night’, supporting a classic Modesto tradition. Even if an event isn’t taking place, there are plenty of kid-friendly activities

going on. Between the bouncy house, mini playground/field, shaved ice, and the amazing mascots, you can rest assured that your children will be happily occupied. A youth-favorite is running around the bases after the game has ended; this can be done after every game so don’t miss a cool opportunity. Despite the numerous events, we cannot lose sight of the main reason we go out to the ball game! Our awesome Nuts! After reading up on the history of John Thurman Field, I learned that a ton of great coaches and players emerged from their program. The stadium has been around since 1955, and with our community’s support, will hopefully stay around forever. These great experiences truly reside with our youth so let’s keep this family tradition alive! My songs of the summer are Under Control by The Strokes, Africa by Toto and Island in the Sun by Weezer. Many restaurants start serving dinner early so that you can get a nice meal in before the shows and movies that begin at 7 or 7:30.

Open Late!

Downtown Modesto is the place to be late Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. There is live music every night of the week in one of our great clubs or restaurants. After the show, stop and enjoy a nightcap.

Parking

There are parking garages at 9th and L Street, 11th and K Street, 11th and I Street and 12th and H Street. Parking is close to all restaurants!

June and July in Modesto’s Graceada Park bring the sights and sounds of the Modesto Band of Stanislaus County. Yes this is MoBand. It is our band, the sound of our city. We have many fantastic festivals, X Fest, American Graffiti, Lucky Fest, but MoBand is the top of the pops. There is really nothing like it. The blankets are out early, the wine is ready, the picnics are made and the music starts at 8 pm, for six Thursdays. MoBand has been going strong since 1919. Yes, Modesto, we have a national
