I look forward to Graffiti Summer every year. We are just coming off our May the 4th Star Wars day celebration. Characters from all over the galaxy came to celebrate. So now we go from one George Lucas hit to another. There is so much energy in our community as the classic cars come out, the evenings are light longer, the patios get a breeze in the evening, and the sounds of full throated V-8 motors and the shine of the chrome and the classic rock and roll fill our eyes and ears. This is a great time in Modesto USA. It truly feels like a “Classic American City” as we gather in Graceada Park for the Concerts in the Park with MoBand and head to the car shows and watch our movie, American Graffiti. Every time I walk down 10th Street, home of the original cruise, I wish it could look like the streets in Carsland, or downtown Williams AZ or a vintage
city with neon signs that just beg for the sights and sounds of the class of 1962. Living in the past? Not at all, I just love the feel of the craftsmanship of neon, an old Fender guitar, the smooth candy coat paint from an expert builder, a soft leather bag or a craft cocktail, and a town that celebrates the history that makes it special as we look to the future. We all crave authenticity and the Modesto history in the birth of cruising and Rockabilly is legit. There is so much more we can do with this. Other cities have figured it out, we can too. People from around the world love this, and it can be our neon sign, beckoning the global traveller. Today, they can walk the Historic Cruise Route, learning about our community as they go. They can even learn from a legend with the interactive videos for each of the 25 informational kiosks. Our Walk of Fame on 10th St celebrates our Legends of the Cruise, the people that inspired American Graffiti. You should check it out. Take your kids, and friends. We need to love and protect our history and we need to nurture and grow our Modesto Graffiti USA Spirit. We have a special place in pop culture history thanks to cruising in Modesto
and this cinematic gift that George Lucas gave our city. The best thing about our American Graffiti heritage is the people and places here in Modesto. Over the years, I have met so many interesting people and have heard so many stories, some true and some not so true, but all great stories about the place we call home. This is our community. These are the people that you will meet at MoBand, at the Cruise Parade, and even in and around the local stores, our farmers markets and restaurants where we shop and eat. There is so much we can learn from our friends and neighbors. Last month, our family did a crazy 2200 mile RV trip throughout the western USA, seeing so many iconic sights, driving on classic Route 66, visiting the Grand Canyon, Bryce and Zion. The best part is that we had a blast along every mile and we would do it again. For that I am the most grateful as in this classic place we live, I am lucky to have a classic amazing family and that is the most important of all. We love our home, friends and family here in Modesto. Thanks to all of you that make this place so great and interesting. I have learned from you all and I thank you. One of Modesto’s most adorable couples is finding the cruising love. Jaci Shervington Lester and Eli Lester are connecting from their own classic cars. This cool cat couple has a family that has the Graffiti spirit with classic cars, cool hair, great guitars and positive outlook on life. You may recognize Eli from Big Earl and the Crying Shame and for sure you have seen their classic cars, suped up by Eli, in many of the local car shows. Not only do they have the classic cars, they are related to the legendary Gene Winfield.

By Jennifer Allsup Graffiti is now well on its’ way in Modesto, the home of the American Graffiti Movie and home to George Lucas as a young man. We have been paying tribute to Graffiti in Modesto for many, many years. Some events are all old school car shows and vendors with good old rock n roll. Others pay tribute to cruising down McHenry Ave in their old hot rods and beauties. Our city really goes out for the month of June. It is worthwhile to note, that the opening song of American Graffiti is Rock Around the Clock, one of the greatest Rockabilly songs of all time from 1954. More places in our area are getting in on the Rockabilly action. Twisted Pig joined the festivities of celebrating Graffiti. On June 3rd, 2017. Owner Randy Rocha will be having his own tribute to Modesto Graffiti. Featuring live music, car show with Classic Cars, Power Rides and Hot Rods. Live music will be as followed. Little Johnny and the Sleepwalkers 2pm, Grease-
hound 3pm, & Voodoo Killer 4pm. Little Johnny & the Sleepwalkers are a three-piece rockabilly, psychobilly band from the Merced area. Greasehound another three-piece psychobilly band from Modesto. Voodoo Killer is based from five talented musicians. Playing hard rock n roll and Rockabilly. The festivities at Twisted Pig start at 2pm, family friendly, Free and goes ‘til 11:30pm. Twisted Pig Bar & grill is located at 2717 Coffee Rd. Modesto. Almost forgot to mention there will be food and drink specials all day during the event. You can get some good Rockabilly at the 3rd Thursday ArtWalk this month as The Voodoo Killer will be playing right there on the streets of J Street from 6-9 pm This is a great way to experience Modesto’s music. Great news Craft Beer Drinkers,
a Modesto classic is making a comeback. St, Stan’s Brewery has signed a lease for 1028 11th Street(where Sandude has been operating out of for the last year.) Word is St Stan’s is currently contract brewing but have a building in escrow where they will be building the new Stanislaus Brewing Co near downtown Modesto. Chad Rice and Rich Hodder bought the brand and have been working tirelessly to bring it back. Originally hoping to purchase the building at 821 L St. When it looked like they could not come to an agreement they were not going to throw in the towel. They immediately started looking for other locations that could work and had aspirations to open a tap room in downtown. When the opportunity came up to take over the Sandude location they jumped at the chance to be just a few short blocks from where they grew to love Modesto’s own Micro Brewery. Brad Morad has purchased the old St Stans/Hero’s building and will be spending some time to remodel and it will be the new home for Skewers. It would have been great to see the brewery back at that location. Though we couldn’t be happier to see such a great restaurant take over the spot especially knowing that St Stans is coming back and they hope to bring music back to the stage. Win/Win in our opinion. We can not wait to be able to drink a pint of Graffiti Wheat, the Red Sky Ale, Whistlestop or any of the other fine craft beers that we have all come to love. It doesn’t look like they will be open in time to truly take advantage of having Modesto’s Graffiti USA signature beer, but here is hoping that we can pick up a 6 pack to add to the collection in 2018.

When your favorite watering hole goes viral thanks to a TV cooking show guy, and you have grown weary of showing up for decent beer to find all tables are full, you pick up the ModestoView to find your new favorite place to quench your thirst. We try our best to inform you of new up-and-coming adventurous libations here in the Valley (or old hidden gems we stumble upon and wish to share, too). Look no further than this View to discover fresh ideas, delicious drinks, and refreshing cocktail concoctions! This month, we visited ChurchKey, brought to you by the same folks who brought us Commonwealth. Already we had high expectations, laid of course by the foundation of Commonwealth, with the best beer selections on tap, yet we were not expecting the tap at ChurchKey to bring us even more variety than our old favorite. There are a tantalizing 42 taps! Two taps serve nitro beers, which we always find to be the perfect refreshment in summer, 5 of them for wine, and 4 are sectioned off to serve house-made tonics in the near future. (Gin and Tonic, anyone?) Two ciders were on tap when we visited. The Made Marion by Two Towns is a sweet fruity treat, be sure to try it! (May we suggest Kopparberg Strawberry Lime in the future? Or Orchard Thieves? Pretty please?) The food was just as awesome if not better: you can make your own pizza! Watch out, BBQ Nachos, you now have a dinner rival. For vegans, you must try the cauliflower wings. We ordered them with coconut Thai peanut sauce, and these will tease your taste buds, giving you uncontrollable cravings. And don’t worry if you forgot your handy-dandy churchkey at home, the friendly staff will serve you your cold beer in a glass, so you won’t even need it. (Who uses them anymore anyway after the invention of the flip top can and the bottle cap? They are simply neat antiques to turn into magnets for the kegerators of your fellow beer enthusiasts.) If you are curious about the logo though, imagine looking up at a churchkey, and then you’ll see it. Otherwise, you might think it’s a lighthouse as we did, and embarrass yourselves. So order something new, heck, several new somethings, find a new favorite beer (or cider!), and tell your friends you drank it at Churchkey! Sip on, friends.

Sixty years of American Graffiti at the A & W Drive-In by Chris Murphy
Back when 10th and 11th Streets in Downtown Modesto were lined with cars, cruising, or draggin’ as it was then called, A & W Drive in was one of the favorite spots to see and be seen. Roller skating car hops were serving burgers and their famous root beer to the kids of all ages that were enjoying the nights. Johnny Mathews’ family is the 3rd family that has owned and managed this worldfamous drive in. “Our restaurant is featured in magazines in Europe like the Cook’s Travel Guide and people from all around the world come to visit when the tour busses come to town. “It seems we are more famous outside of Modesto than right here at home”, muses Johnny. Well friends, this is a place that you need to visit and enjoy if you haven’t yet. This is a true slice of familyowned Modestocana. It is still the same as it was, in the same location at 14th and G as when it opened in 1957. This is not fast food, it is an experience. Drivers park, roll down their windows and order into the speaker box, and soon, your delicious burger, fries, shake, root beer, Coney dog arrive in the hands of a roller skating car hop on your special tray. This is what it is all about, time to sit and enjoy this wonderful feeling of the days of cruising and a slower lifestyle. But it is much more than just the fun of a drive in. It is about the burger and of course the amazing delicious root beer. Today, 60 years later, the most popular thing on the menu is a root beer float. The root beer still comes in a frosty glass mug and there is really not much better than A&W Root Beer in a frosty glass mug. No Ice. The famous Papa Burger is a fresh made double burger, grilled to order with fresh tomatoes, lettuce and onion and as Jules Winfield would say, “now that is a tasty burger”. The Fries are large cut and delicious and the A&W root beer in the mug, just about the best thing ever. The old Burger family is still there without the names, Mama burger is the single burger, the Teen Burger is the Bacon cheese. Ahh, the
memories. I used to love getting the Teen Burger and a frosty root beer growing up and the tastes are the same. There are other great favorites like the foot-long Coney Dog and they even have cheese curds. Yum. At A&W, the Graffiti theme is for real. This is what they are all year long, and beyond all of the tourists and Graffiti fans, you get this all year long. During the summer, Fridays and Saturdays are Cruiseins, featuring a variety of Elvis singers hosting karaoke, classic cars, roller skates, Hula Hoops and so much more. This is the real deal and no local should miss this experience. Fortunately, at 14th and G, A&W is so easy to find. A & W Drive In Modesto was there when George Lucas was in 7th grade. The Legends of the Cruise that are celebrated on the Walk of Fame where regulars there when they were out for a night in their cars on a Modesto evening. You can be part of this too. It is cool that their father, Peter was a roller skating car hop back in Wisconsin. Also on the team are Jessica Briseno-10 years and Natalia Johnson and their roller skating car hops. Of course the Root Bear will be close by for laughs. On July 12, A&W will celebrate their 60th Anniversary with 60 cent Floats. This is the real Graffiti spirit. Although only 100 years old, the lions seem to posses a mysterious quality more commonly associated with sculptures of the ancient world. Indeed, there are long forgotten stories about them. One interesting myth was conjured up in the Jazz Age, when rambunctious young drag racers would tell their girlfriends that every time a virgin crossed the bridge, the lions would stand up and roar. And over the course of a century, how many local children, in the infinite depths of their imaginations, have feared this animation of these kings of the Tuolumne? Even the original artist who crafted the statues is unknown. There have been at least a few over the years who claimed to have met the artist. While there is some speculation as to the exact identity of the craftsman, it is generally accepted that the lions were sculpted in the basement of an Italian artist in San Francisco, although his name remains a mystery. The lions upon the 7th Street Bridge have seen many an era come and go. They were there at the end of the First World War, they witnessed the Roaring 20’s, the Great Depression, and the droves of Dust Bowl migrants. They looked on as numerous young men and women departed for Europe and the Pacific during the Second World War, they saw the street cruises and races of the 50’s and 60’s, the passing Flower Children on their way to San Francisco, the rise of drugs and gang violence, the exodus of life and commerce from Downtown Modesto, and its budding rebirth. For a century, the 7th Street Bridge and its lions have been a mainstay on the banks of the Tuolumne, a constant reminder of the roots and the history of the Central Valley and its residents, and an enduring monument to bygone generations who crossed its road and passed under the shadows of its four looming protectors. The bridge still stands today where 7th Street crosses the Tuolumne River. It is slated to be destroyed and replaced. Friends, it is time to yodel. Our area has a very active Swiss Club many local people with Swiss heritage. There will be the big horns, lederhosen, dirndls, Swiss food and drink and an international Swiss experience. The festival is a four-day event that begins with a Welcome Reception Thursday evening, June 22nd at the Doubletree Hotel and Convention Center in Modesto, CA. The Grand Concert will take place on Friday, June 23rd, at the Gallo Center for the Arts, Mary Stuart Rodgers Theater, featuring approximately 250 singers from the eleven participating societies of the Pacific Coast and Canada. Saturday, June 24th the Folk Festival will be held at the San Joaquin Valley Swiss Club in Ripon at 10:45 a.m. There will be food and liquid refreshments available for purchase, Lunch from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and dinner at 5:30 p.m. The Mitchell Gander - Ron Scheiber Orchestra will be playing dance music in the hall from 7:00-11:30pm and outside in the patio area we will have the Amibuebe Schwyzerörgeli Trio (3 gentlemen playing a typical Swiss button accordion). The four-day festival will conclude Sunday, June 25th with the Grand Banquet at the Modesto Convention Center, adjacent to the Doubletree Hotel in Modesto. June is national Pride month! Join MoPRIDE, Inc. and the Central Valley Pride Center for our annual Pride in the Park on June 17th as we celebrate the past, present, and future of the Central Valley LGBTQ community. For the first time ever, Pride in the Park will be held at John Thurman Field from 1:00-8:00 p.m. Admission is $5 for attendees 11 and older, and kids under 11 get in free! Free parking. This family-friendly event will feature a kids’ zone complete with face painting, magic show, and craft area, as well as a teen garden and a senior section. 6:00-8:00 p.m. is designated parental-supervision-only as entertainment is an adult drag show, but there will be tons of family-friendly performances throughout the day by artists such as Jordan Waters, Callbox, Ballet Folklorico, Lily Lemon, Cheer Sacramento, The PlayThings, Mina y Su Dinomita and Delta Work from Ru Paul’s Drag Race. The event will also showcase Central-Valley-area retail and nonprofit vendors that offer resources to the LGBTQ community and will be a great place to find out more about supports and services from medical and mental health care to LGBTQ-friendly churches. Proceeds from Pride in the Park help MoPRIDE, Inc. and the Central Valley Pride Center provide supportive programs like participant-specific peer-support groups, LGBTQ civil rights advocacy, mentorship, and suicide prevention. Unplugged has a sweet spread of sounds for the acoustic music lover to savor this month. Saturday June 17, Music At The GMC presents an intimate evening with True Life Trio. This is one of the concerts I’ve been most looking forward to curating all year. Briget, Juliana and Leslie will knock you flat on your behind as they weave rich vocal harmonies and sultry rhythms from Bulgaria to the Bayou. Their improvisation-laced repertoire includes original songs and folk tunes from Louisiana, Mexico, Greece, Macedonia, Albania, Poland, Ukraine and more. This innovative trio explores the creative possibilities of cross-fertilization of different traditions, massaging and expanding the boundaries of these traditional styles. While ‘Music At The GMC’ is geared more toward eclectic and world music, I can’t seem to get Americana & roots out of my system either, so we’ll be starting a new pop-up series at Café Deva. I recently connected with a local husband-and-wife duo called The Darcys. Erik Lindblom (vocals, guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin) and Robin Retherford (vocals, guitar, bass, ukulele, accordion) share a mixture of original songs along with some covers, influenced by

artists such as Jackson Browne, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, John Prine, and Neil Young. Opening for The Darcys will be Lucy Isabel, a Nashville singer/songwriter crafting music inspired by old country & folk storytelling. Bailey’s birthday party was lively and quite a spectacle to be a part of. Two weeks ago it all went down at the OP. I watched NeuroButcher on stage performing their debut set and it was head banging, catchy and gave me the feelgoods. They had people moving and starting a pit right from the get go. I could feel their passion and fluidity thru out their set. NeuroButcher is from the 209 and drummer Travis hails from Modesto. They are a deathcore band with musical influences from bands such as Carnifex, Whitechapel, Pantera and Necrophagist. Current members include Rj Ainslie on Vocals, Aaron Quillen on Bass, Matt Adams on Guitar, Cameron Curbelo on Guitar and Travis Hancock on Drums. Band manager Pamela Sue Yates of Pamsterdam Promotionz has been working at getting their name out there and bringing them into the 209 scene. John Sanders: 2017 American Graffiti Car Show Parade Grand Marshall and Legend of the Cruise

The spirit of American Graffiti in Modesto would not be alive today without John Sanders. John was part of Modesto’s beginning car culture in the 1950’s. Not only that, he has worked hard to continue the legacy of a true love of classic cars and the American Graffiti spirit that is pure. I am one of John Sanders’ biggest fans, and the work that he and his ultra effervescent wife, Mary Ann do to support our non-profits, youth programs, cycling and car events are a model that we can all learn from. John is all car guy from his first car, a ‘37 Chevy to the exotic Aston Martin. Most important, he is part of this community and gives to it all of the time. Along with his wife, MaryAnn, they have the spirit of Modesto. When people say better half, this is really true in this case as Mary Ann is a legend in local education and even has a school named after her. And that educational background is what connected her to John. The Sanders are proud parents and grandparents. Their daughter Kristi lives in Corona del Mar and son Jason lives in Campbell. So let’s get to know John Sanders a bit more. ModestoView: How did you meet Mary Ann? John Sanders: I was working in my family’s appliance store at 1231 McHenry in 1965 and Mary Ann walked in to talk to my mom. At the time, it was difficult to get young people to stay in Modesto and the Modesto City Schools were actively trying to recruit and keep teachers. My mom was active in the local churches and Mary Ann had organized a Modesto Singles club to get young people together as a group so they would gain interest in Modesto and stay. Mary Ann came in to share that information with Mom, and we met. I was working so I gave her my business card. That weekend we had our first date of beer and pizza and we cancelled our other dates we had that weekend and went to a sports car race at Laguna Seca. The rest is history MV: What first got you interested in cars? JS: I built a push car when I was about 10. It had 2 x 4s for axles, springs I got from Helm Chevrolet, and ropes to steer it. I felt the need for speed and took it to my uncle’s house in Sonora and went to a big hill. I quickly learned that I

needed brakes and I couldn’t stop and crashed into a fence. I finally got my first real car as a gift from a lady who used to baby sit me. It was a 1937 Chevy “Business Coupe”. I would drag 10th all the time. MV: So what’s your high school alma mater? JS: I am Downey High, class of 1954. We were the first graduating class from this new school. We had our freshman year at Modesto High and moved when Downey opened. Modesto was growing quickly then. Our family lived on a farm at College and Roseburg, where I was born. That was the edge of town. My parents first appliance store was at 910 I St. just off of Skid Row (9th St) until it later moved to McHenry as Modesto grew. I started working there at age 14. After high school, I attended MJC for 2 years and then went to University of Oregon and graduated in 1958. This is when I really got the car bug. MV: When do you realize you were a car guy? JS: I loved engines and every time I looked at the motor in my parents 1934 Dodge with a rumble seat, the motor was just silver and boring. Motors were supposed to look cool, so I opened the hood up one day, and I painted the engine. It looked cool. I was probably about 5th grade. When my dad started it, the paint got hot and caught on fire. This was my first effort a suping up a car and it failed. But I was hooked. I sold the ‘37 Chevy for $250 and I was able to buy a ‘49 Cadillac for $500. Later I would start to discover the European cars and in 1958 bought a 1955 Austin Healey. I really got the sports car bug and then in 1960, I was able to buy a new Austin Healey.

MV: When did you get married? JS: Mary Ann and I were married in 1966. We drove our Aston Martin DB4 to Portland for our honeymoon. It was a great road trip. I am currently working on restoring the Aston. Next I am going to restore a ’49 Cadillac. MV: So how did the car show that we have today come to be? JS: I was a sports car nut and part of the Sports Car Club of America. One of the important things I did was join the North Kiwanis Club in 1972. I became friends with Chuck Billington and the other guys that had the sports cars and race cars. Chuck was also a member of the same Kiwanis Club. We had a car show that was a Concoure ‘D Elegance where all the cars were in mint condition. Our Kiwanis Club sponsored that show from 1980-1989, and over the years, we wanted to do more of the hot rods and cars which were all fixed up for speed and show. That was a no no for the SCAA. Then we were in the middle of the huge Graffiti Night celebrations and it all ended in 1994. In 1998, a group of us, Gary Vukich, Don Wood, Chuck Billington, Jack McCoy, Al Barr, and I went to then Mayor Dick Lang and asked if we could do a street rod show to try to bring it all back and get our car culture going again. Our plan was to do it at MJC Campus and they supported it. We decided to call it the American Graffiti Car Show. The city was nervous about using the word “Graffiti” but they finally relented. So with a huge police presence in 1999, the first show went off without a hitch at MJC East Campus. It has grown each year since. We have permission from Universal to use the trademark “American Graffiti” and we have grown this show carefully and respectfully. The North Modesto Kiwanis have really built a great event that raises a lot of money for nonprofits in our community.
MV: So this lead to the return of the downtown cruise and so many more events? JS: Yes, we wanted to do the Cruise Parade in downtown Modesto. They wouldn’t let us do it on a Friday night so we did the first one on a Saturday morning. Now it is finally on a Friday night and extends all the way to Orangeburg from downtown. It is a big part of the summer with cars coming from all over the USA and many of them come so they can be in the Cruise Parade. MV: What do we need to do to make the American Graffiti experience better? JS: We need to make sure the next generation feels included in this. We have struggled to get next generation into the car shows. There are lots of car enthusiasts but they are into so many different things. We are losing the Model A generation. We all grew up with the hot V8s, but the current hot cars are Nissans and Subarus, etc. So for the 2nd year, we are offering a “Specialty class” in the car show to get the younger drivers involved and part of the car culture. The cruise parade is still 1979 and earlier to celebrate the age of the cruise. MV: Now that you have passed the torch of the North Modesto Kiwanis Car Show over to Brent Burnside, describe your perfect day: JS: My perfect day was Draggin’ 10th. We lived in the best time. Being out in your car was so much better than sitting around watching TV. The cool thing about cruising is that if someone had a car, you knew you would see them there. The best part being “retired” is not having the pressure of being in business, but I am just as busy now, but it is on my own timeframe. So I guess nowadays, my perfect day would be taking the dogs to the coffee shop and relax reading the newspaper, and then come home to work on restoring my Aston. Many days, Mary Ann and I will meet up for lunch. We like to support organizations like Boys and Girls Clubs and others. Modesto is such a different place than when I was living on a farm on College and Roseburg. There were only about 30,000 people here during high school but I love this town and being a part of it. It has been a great place to grow up in. MV: Our signature question. Beatles or Stones? JS: Beatles. (Classic answer to a classic question)

Walk of Fame 2017 Inductees Celebration

George Lucas once told me when I asked him about how he would describe himself, and he said he is “a storyteller”. American Graffiti was a story about 1962 in Modesto USA. It was a story that was shared by many communities around the USA, but it has put Modesto in a special place in our nation’s history and pop culture. Yes Modesto, we are the #homeofAmericanGraffiti and this amazing history is key to our future. Like Lucas, we, Modesto, have to tell our story. It is something to be proud of, and we must celebrate it by recognizing it’s importance in the past, but what it can do for our future. Our story is still being written. The “American Graffiti” story endures today on 10th & 11th Streets in Downtown Modesto on the Historic Cruise Route, where the people of the true cruising route inspired George Lucas’ film. These are the “Legends of the Cruise” and who his film was about. It is our job to take that story and tell the rest of it. We need our local legends and these are the people that give Modesto its character. This is the foundation of the Modesto Historic Cruise Route. In 2012, we celebrated George Lucas as our first “Legend of the Cruise”. Each year, we recognize those that this story is about. People across America and all over the world are invited to have a rockin’ good time as the “Walk of Fame” Class of ’17 is unveiled on the Modesto Historic Graffiti Cruise Route on Wednesday, June 7, on 10th Street between J and K Streets in conjunction with the Mid Valley Chevy Club’s Park ‘n Shine that hosts approximately 500 classic cars and hot rods.
Six local legends will be added to the Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame:

“Big Jon” Enberg - Modesto High - 1953 Prepared by Steven Corgiat “Big Jon” Enberg moved to Modesto as a teenager. He graduated from Modesto High School in 1953 and attended Modesto Junior College. He was a good student and played football for both schools. Big Jon was part of the local “hot rod” scene. He was the youngest member of the “Century Toppers” car club and the club secretary. At that time he had a 1940 Ford Coupe painted yellow with a yellow and white tuck & roll interior, chrome wheels and a loaded flathead mill. After serving honorably in the U.S. Army Big Jon bought a new 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 two-door hardtop. This car featured a highly modified 312 engine and customized body & paint. He successfully raced this car, won many car shows and was featured in several national car magazines. Big Jon also had a 1958 Corvette with custom paint and a full-race engine which he campaigned at Kingdon & Balico drag strips to many “top eliminator” trophies. Big Jon was a legendary racer. On the street or at the drags he was the man to beat. It was said at the time that Big Jon’s cars were so fast you couldn’t tell what color they were and only way to get a good look at them is when they were sitting still. Big Jon was a friend and mentor to two younger boys in the neighborhood, Paul & Jimmy Corgiat, who went on to be “hot rodders” in their own right. Their friendship continues to this day. Big Jon has also been a friend, mentor and role model to Paul Corgiat’s son Steve. Big Jon is a loyal friend always willing to help others with h is knowledge and experience Big Jon has always maintained his interest in hot rods. From the 1950’s to the present he has had countless fast & customized cars, trucks, motorcycles and a boat. Among these were a 1966 Ford Ranchero with a 351 Cleveland, a Kawasaki KZ1000, an Oakland Roadster show class winning 1969 Corvette 427 roadster, a Hondo flat bottom boat with a 454 & V-drive, a Mustang 5.0 with supercharger & nitrous oxide and one of his current rides is a Toyota Tundra 5.7 hemi with nitrous oxide injection. In keeping with the true spirit of hot rodding Big Jon has always kept up with the latest automotive trends and technology. Going fast means you don’t need to look back. He is always looking toward the future. Big Jon was there at the beginning of hot rodding and he is still hot rodding today. Big Jon Enberg has been acknowledged as a hot rod pioneer with a wall plaque at the National Hot Rod Association Wally Parks museum in Pomona, California continued on page 18

This is who we are Modesto USA. We need to let our Graffiti flag fly all year long and welcome this feeling that takes us back to the class of ’62. We need to tell our friends, or business travelers, our students, our senators and everyone that will listen, “ModestoUSA is the home of American Graffiti”. Thanks to Modesto native and very successful filmmaker George Lucas, American Graffiti made Modesto famous, and launched many film careers and a wave of nostalgia that we are still riding today. Set in 1962 Modesto, American Graffiti captured a moment in time and asked “Where were you in ‘62”? The Graffiti Spirit is good for our soul, it is good for our economy and it makes us a special place that should be a destination for people around the world and Graffiti Summer is our time of the year. People from around the world come to Modesto to get their own slice of ModestoCana, feel our Graffiti spirit and be a part of our Graffiti Summer events. This is who we are so let’s celebrate being the birthplace of Graffiti, Modesto USA where it is Graffiti Summer all year long. Modesto USA, located on historic Route 99, Modesto was home to the classic drive-ins, car hops and the legendary 10th and 11th Streets that were the home of classic cruising, the stories and the legends that inspired the film and are a part of the Graffiti experience today. Following the end of World War II, the open highway was calling and classic drive-ins appeared across the USA. Kids could now do something that was previously not allowed; drive for no reason at all. Cruising, Car hops and our ”Classic History” was born and here in Modesto, it is part of our culture. In Modesto, you can still get roller skate car hop service, our people are friendly and all summer long, cars trimmed in chrome call the streets of Modesto USA their home. You can read about one of our legendary drive-ins, A & W in this months ChefView on Page 10. You can hear the beat of Graffiti here as classic Rockabilly music was first slapped in Modesto back in ’38 by Maddox Brothers and Rose. That sound was the foundation for early rock and roll and the epic superfantastic soundtrack that appeared in the classic film. Modesto has a soundtrack and it still rocks today and during Graffiti Summer, we are all rocking it. So grab your poodle skirt, slick back your hair, walk the Historic Cruise Route and get in the groove for summer in Modesto USA.

The North Modesto Kiwanis Show is the show of shows in our region. The sweetest street rods, race cars, a huge vendor area and food of all types and a big stage with classic tunes all weekend long. Sing A Long Grease

The spirit of Graffiti USA is now larger than life. All over Modesto, classic murals have been painted to showcase our history and are a very exciting tour. Take a walk back in time. 10th and 11th Streets in Downtown Modesto are the original streets where the cruise of American Graffiti was born. Modesto has an amazing car culture, legendary car clubs, musicians, racers, actors and actresses and Rockabilly and Rock and Roll were born on our local radio stations. This is a 45 minute walk around downtown Modesto. While you learn about our history, you can stop in at our local cafes and restaurants for some refreshment. Worth Weldon Modesto High – 1955 By Dawn Brinkhaus, Daughter
“He never had a favorite car, he loved all of them”
Worth Weldon went to Modesto high school and graduated in 1995. He had a passion for cars his entire life. He had a collection of amazing cool cars, and he loved racing, and even had a team with a dragster. As children we always had show cars and enjoyed going with him to all the shows, not to mention his dragster and going to the Fremont raceway or San Jose speedway every Friday night as children. We used to laugh and say that he liked his cars better than us. When he was still alive and I would go to visit him in Modesto we always would go down McHenry and he would talk about American Graffiti and all of the fun times he had. He had a beautiful wife Kathryn Lee Smith, and everyone called her Kaye. Worth loved fast cars and everything fast. He was definitely a car lover through and through. In the midst of him purchasing different cars, he and our mother also Bred Bull Terriers which we also showed. Later in his life, he had a beautiful Mercedez-Benz AMGs, and true to Worth’s racing spirit, they were gloss black with flames.
Rick Walker – Al’s Furniture Downey High School 1969
Rick Walker got the automotive bug from his grandfather Bill Walker. He was an LA Mechanic with this own shop grinding cams for famous racers. He got a ¼ midget when he was six and raced it at Playland on Kansas. “When I was growing up, local car guys would come by to check out my sisters, I would check out their cars” Rick said. His family moved to Francis Ave when he as 13, near Al’s Drive In and every Friday night was a car show. His best friend Jim Rowe owned a ’51 Chevy, he was four years older. His first car was a ’64 Impala with a blown up motor, and at Downey, they built him a 283 V-8 and it was fantastic. He got married at 17 and graduated in 1969. As his daughter reached driving age, he rebuilt his first car, a 1961 VW bug. His next car was a 56 Chevy. He worked at Campbell’s Soup after graduating as a mechanic. Rick has always been a big community supporter and created Al’s Nifty 50s Weekend at Al’s Furniture benefiting Stanislaus Special Olympics and invited the local Chevy Club. This club became the MidValley Chevy Club. Many of the furniture vendors donated for the auctions and over 13 years, and have raised over $ ¼ Million. Over the years, he has built many cars, but he is known for his 55 Chevy. Rick says “the best thing about living in Modesto is not only the cool cars, but all the wonderful people I have met and become friends with. I have lived in the best of times. I have never dreamed of living anywhere but right here in Modesto” He is now building what he claims to be his last car, a 56 Ford Fairlane Wagon.

This legendary car club is alive, well and
racing. This club was there at the birth of our car culture. Founded in 1949 with club bylaws as old as 1952, it was the second car club in our read and it is still active today. At the time, the other car club was Gene Winfield’s Century Toppers, who were inducted in 2016 on to the Walk of Fame. James A Walker, Roy Farriester and Sox Suzuki were founding members. Former presidents include: Richard Womack, Mike Webb, Benton Hendrickson, Michael Johnson, Gary Flud, Jim Frakes and other Former members include - Larry Summerlot and Tony Wilds. Over the years, the Throttlers have remained strong, participating at regional car shows, supporting local events and raising funds for local children’s organizations. The Modesto Throttlers and their members have been featured in many classic car magazines. Current 2017 Officers: David Walters – President, Tiffany Walters –Secretary, Michael Johnson – Treasurer, Kevin Schwarz - Vice President, and Michael Hall - Sergeant at Arm. Members: Scott Morgan, Andrew Day, David Day, Duane Monk, Richard Womack, Annette Hall, Michael Williams and Maria Johnson Throttlers have an active summer and fall agenda, with car show show proceeds going Sierra Vista Children’s Center. They will be bringing out the fast cars at their upcoming show at Wood Park in Oakdale Ca on September 23, 2017. They regularly host get togethers at Sonic DriveIn on McHenry Avenue as well as meetings held on the first Monday of the month at Ridgways Restaurant and Lounge at 2401 E. Robert N Gains has one of the best reputations for making the cars of the Modesto Graffiti era go as fast as possible. Born in Missouri, he came to Modesto in 1949, attending Orville Wright, LaLoma and Downey. His dad had Gaines Texaco on Yosemite. Bobby worked at the station and came to love all things automotive. His first car was a ‘47 Crosley that he drove to LaLoma Jr. High, parking in a vineyard as he was only 13. His next car was a ‘32 Ford three window that he drove to Downey and cruised 10th and Burge’s Drive In on many weeknights and weekends. Graduating in ’62, he attended MJC and married Glynis Hemple in ’64 and had a daughter Alys Blakelee. He would then hook up with Charlie Bell, one of Modesto premier motor builders at Modesto Auto Parts where Charlie machined for Bob on his hot rod. This lead to Bobby and Charlie forming a long-time partnership that is still known as Bell and Gaines in March 1969 after buying the inventory from Noble Auto Parts. In 1972, they moved to their present location at 7th and L St. Charlie became known as “Mr. Mopar” to all Chrysler fanatics including longtime Modesto racer Jack McCoy. Bobby & Charlie built many motors for Jack’s successful racing career. Charlie passed away in September 1977. Fast forward to today and Bob is still hard at it at Bell & Gaines Parts & Machine. A true Modesto legend.

It is June Summer is here and in Modesto, that means only one thing, celebrating American Graffiti with cars, cruising and of course music. If you are a classic car fan, you will not be able to turn around over the next month without being blinded by lots and lots of chrome. Now when it comes to music, you make your Summer soundtrack, and we hope it includes a fair amount of local bands. Want to sample a mix of locals and enjoy the warm night air? Check out Music in the Plaza where the Wrong Doers(2nd), Johnny Rocket & the Thrust(9th), Marirose & the Gypsies(16th), Jet Red(23rd) and Triple D(30th) will all be performing 7-9pm for FREE. Word is St. Stans is coming back to downtown and have signed a lease on a tap room on 11th Street. The owners plan on incorporating live music along with their delicious legendary craft beer. Who is ready to enjoy a Graffiti Wheat or a Red Sky Ale while enjoying some local acts? Roam downtown Modesto every third Thursday for the Artwalk. So many amazing artists
and music on nearly every corner. The Artwalk is a great event that you should put on your calendars. Valley Music Institute is now on K and 13th Street. Keep an eye out for their student concerts. These kids Rock, see Modesto’s future Rock Stars today. Relax on the Range #2 is scheduled for June 24th at the River Oaks Golf Course. Not much more information at the time of going to press. Everyone who went last time had a blast, so we expect it to be even bigger and better this go around. Ralston’s Goat has music almost every Friday and for Sunday Brunch. Check out Deva Cafe every Sunday for Breakfast, coffee and music(ask to find out what else is on their calendar.) Friday Night Unplugged and Open Mic Sunday at Queen Bean. Monday Night Jazz and Thursday Night Jam along with regularly scheduled music on the weekend at Barkin’ Dog. It is not that hard to find something to do in Modesto and surrounding area, and as always, music is always best listened to and enjoyed with friends. Pack up the car and listen to some local musicians. Once the month is over, we will be looking to see who makes the list for this years Modesto Area Music Awards. The first month of summer has arrived, ushering in the Concerts in the Park concert series season throughout the county. Green grass, blanket seating, picnic dinners and an array of music genre choices highlight the best of times in free family fun. Riverbank Community Center Park starts their event on June 2 through July 28, Ceres Concerts begins with Texas Funk on June 6 and continues through July 25 and our own MoBand concerts premiere in grand style June 8 with “Stax of Wax”. The Third Thursday Modesto Art Walk is on June 15 and Deva Café at 12th and J is the new location for the ModestoView sponsored stage where live music will serenade art strollers. This month features those Rockabilly Cool Cats-The VOO DOO KILLERS from 6-9pm. Come by for some great food and drinks and Graffiti flavored music. Deva continues to host the most family friendly Sunday morning in the County. The Modesto Peace/Life Center’s 35th annual Peace Camp in the Sierra will take place June 23-25 at Camp Peaceful Pines on Clark Fort Road off Hwy 108. Well another day has come and gone and one of your own musicians has passed, one of the most talented, gentle loving and supportive fellow musicians Penny Gail-White left us with loved ones at her bedside. Penny was a “trooper”, played and promoted many events with her and she always showed up with bells on her toes and ready to play even under duress. Over the years she played with many bands and if free would always do the gig. Once I called her for a low paying gig and asked if she could do the event, she responded “is the food good?.. sure I’ll do it” Penny loved music; she loved life and supported her fellow musicians for better and worse and always accentuated the positive. Even in failing health she came to Blue Monday Party and sang beautifully, we will keep her in our hearts always. Blue Monday Party will do a tribute July 10th to Penny Gail-White with hosting Band the Sensations of which Penny was a member. All fellow musicians who played with Penny are invited to come and sit in. Thank you all for coming out for our Latin Explosion with Gustavo Ramirez. Blue Monday Invitational Jam returns to the Barkin’ Dog Grill this June 12 with Ultra Lounge and
special guests on the Rhythm & Blues Side. Gil Conrad Johnson Bass player singer and front man return with pianist Will Roc on keys and vocals. Both players presently are with Terrie Londee & B4 Dawn Band, they will play a
whole lot of R & B, Soul, funk, Jazz and popular. BLUES Hello Everyone by Earl Matthews Hello everyone, things are heating up and its time to get down. On the 3rd I will be back at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz with the Poorhouse Millionaires. A couple of years ago I opened Carolyn Wonderland at the State Theatre and she is back in our area on June 9th at the Palms Playhouse on Winters. Well worth checking out. Also a free show that same night at the new theater in Black Oak Casino with the Zydeco Flames, if you love to dance this is your spot. Taj Mahal and Keb Mo Band are at Gallo on the 13th. They have the number one blues record in the world right now. I have seen them both before and I can only drool at the thought of both of these amazing men on stage together. I hope to see you all at this one. If you ask me about the best bang for your buck in the summer look no further than the fair. On the 14th Tommy Castro Band along with hometown hero’s Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood will be at the San Joaquin County Fair. So for your $6 admission, you get all the fun of the fair and you get to see 2 great bands. You can’t beat it. Just a few days later on the 17th, you can catch Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood on the Sierra Beer Train, make sure to get those tickets in advance folks

If you are a fun of Chi-town blues look no further than the Six Shooter Saloon on Sacramento on the 22nd, Sean Holt and the Teardrops will be in the house carrying on the legacy of his father the legendary Magic Slim. My good friends from Oregon, the Midnight Darlins are coming back. I’m excited to be playing a few shows with them as they pass through on tour. On the 22nd we, the Poorhouse Duo with be with them at the Waterwheel Saloon and Pizza Co. On the 23rd we will join them on stage at Sandude in Modesto. We are all headed up to Joe’s Bar in Boulder Creek on the 24th. Then on Sunday the 25th they will be playing some sets in the early afternoon at the Knights Ferry General Store and Saloon. Take a minute and check them out on youtube, I bet you will make time to catch a show. The last one if a big event a festival over in San Jose called the Fountain Blues Fest, This year featuring Elvin Bishop, Bettye Lavette, Fillmore Slim, Aki Kumar and Maxx Cabello, Jr. It’s a great line up with some seasoned veterans and some up and coming talent that you will be proud to say “I saw them when” Take a moment and look up Aki Kumar, he’s a monster player for sure. As always you have 2 great options for Blues Jams every week on Thursday. You can check out David Dow’s Jam at the Barkin’ Dog in Modesto or you can check out Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood at the Garlic Brothers in Stockton. It’s fun and it’s a great way to network with other musicians and music lovers alike.
Inspiration by Mary Layton An inspiration is something mysterious and
magical. The word comes from the Latin words “inspirare”, which means inflame or blow into, and “spiritus” which means breath, soul or spirit. Put together inspiration is taking ‘a breath from above’. A Persian Sufi master once described inspiration as an “idea from God” and as something we cannot grasp with the mind. An inspiration may come to us as a sudden, unexpected original idea, seemingly out of nowhere, without explanation. May be we have been up against a problem, preoccupied with finding a solution and suddenly, in a flash, it all comes together, a completely new idea and the decision what has to be done next. Then there is the kind of inspiration that comes to us through others or through perceiving something that touches our feelings and stimulates our mind to generate an unusual activity or creativity. Unusual acts of love and kindness can inspire us to change the way we think forever. We are inspired when people reach their goals and dreams, especially when at first all the odds were stacked against them. Good teachers inspire their students to go beyond their perceived limits. One way or the other we all continuously inspire each other with our energy, patience, courage and hard work. We will always be inspired by nature. According to legend a Taoist monk who was watching the fight between a bird and a snake was so inspired by the strategy, gracefulness and timing of both animals that he created T’ai Chi Ch’uan, the great Chinese martial art. Music, and the arts, as well as all kinds of inventions and innovations in the sciences are inspired by nature. Sometimes inspiration can be very simple. While you’re at the gym, you probably regular-
ly sport the treadmill, elliptical and sometimes the spin bike and stair climber; but have you ever considered using that one piece of exercising equipment that’s cornered in the back of the gym collecting dust? I’m taking about the rowing machine. Out of all the gyms where I’ve been a member over the years, I think I’ve only seen it being used twice. Why? Probably because it’s the most aggressive workout you can get in 20 minutes versus on any other Exercise machine. Seriously, after 20 minutes you’re 100% done because your body just went through an entire fat burning, muscle building, cardio racing workout. Many professional trainers in the fitness world, including myself, believe the rowing machine is the most effective piece of fitness equipment for burning fat and improving conditioning. It’s a great non-weight-bearing exercise machine, a rowing machine uses both your upper- and lower-body muscles to increase cardiovascular conditioning. Since you’re using your entire body, targeted muscle soreness is unlikely, you’ll more likely feel the soreness all over as you train

It was 50 years ago today, Sergeant Pepper taught the band to play! The Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ is ranked by Rolling Stone Magazine as the #1 album of all time...and it’s birthday is June 1st 1967! In the spirit of retrospect, I will be spending my summer in vinyl mode. Rasputin record store (by the mall), is an awesome place to look for used vinyls and find great new bands for cheap. Below their brand new music sections, there are hundreds of retro vinyls, most in extremely good condition for about $1. There is something remarkable about listening to an album, cover to cover in its purest form. Another place to look for new music is at local thrift stores in the CD or vinyl section. Once at the Hope Chest,
I found The Beatles ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ record inside a Peter, Paul and Mary sleeve. There is so much music to be shared and recycled and this is the month for it! Growing up, my favorite movie was The Sandlot, so summertime baseball has always resonated well with me. Most high schools will be sporting ‘Summer-Ball’, so don’t forget to catch those games. But it is also important with all this free time to just get out with friends and play sports without boundaries or plans. Local parks and fields are great places to get your necessary Vitamin D. Another great way to get active is visiting Graceada Park every Thursday night for Concert in the Park!! This is seriously so classic for every single age group, I can’t express this enough. This is a home-town classic made for everyone... all you need is a blanket and your friends!
