ing Graffiti Summer. The sounds of the street rods, the Music in the Plaza, MoBand in the park, the shiny chrome, people filling the patios of restaurants, the cars lined up at the drive-ins, the burgers grilling, and everyone seems to be having a great time. We have just come off of Porchfest where we got to hang out with friends and musicians all over town. You have to really try hard not to have fun. This is who we are. Modesto means so many things to many different people and different people have what they like and don’t like, but when you back up May and June in Modesto, we really get at some of the cool parts of our history that make us different than any other city in the world. It is cool to be unique, special and have an interesting past. Even if you never plan on owning or driving a classic car, it says something about us, and our place in history and at the very least, you can look at the chrome and candy apple red paint as art, something hand made, crafted like a hipster cocktail or a hand made repurposed pallet wall in your house, stand up bass, or steel-framed bicycle with Campy parts. Things are not always as they seem and we need to see the bigger picture. One of the things that people like about Modesto is that it has the small town feeling, but with the bigger city amenities. This in a nutshell makes our retro Graffiti classic culture so spot on. We love our walkable downtown, farmers market, hanging out with friends on the patios, the twinkle lights in our plazas and over our streets, music in the air and coffee at the cafes with people writing computer code or poetry. This is the feeling that makes us Modesto USA, A Classic American City. It all goes together and there is a piece of it for everyone, young or old. It is relevant for our modern living as well as our sense of place We all want to feel like we are part of something

and have a connection to the things we eat and do. So friends, being the home of George Lucas, American Graffiti, Star Wars and Rockabilly connects us to so much more and makes us real. Authentic and creative cities are the inners, and when we all come together to celebrate, we all win. We win by using our history to build our future. While other cities have to fabricate their story, we have a great one. We celebrate our graduates who are writing their next chapters and it is up to all of us to build on to our city and create a place where this next generation will want to come back. This is very important every year when our kids go off to college, or they graduate from college as we hope they will find a great home here. That is our goal and why civic pride is so important. June is time to reach out to our local businesses, take a staycation, enjoy picnics in the park for MoBand and the best ways to do this are to pick up a togo dinner at your favorite restaurant and then take it to MoBand to share or take on your bike ride on the Virginia Corridor or Mensinger trail. Ride to brunch on a Sunday morning. We are grateful to the local businesses that advertise in ModestoView so that we can put this magazine in your hands free of charge. Our mission

from day one is to “Serve Civic Pride Daily” and you are part of this. Thank you for reading and thanks for being our friends. See you out and about in Modesto USA. Chris Murphy Publisher & Founder – ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

NON PROFIT North Modesto Kiwanis By Denette Covarrubias It’s June! The month of the American Graffiti Festival; a festival that helped shape our community culture; create a sense of Modesto pride by bringing us together, and a month of raising funds for children all around Stanislaus County. We had the privilege to interview the current President of The North Modesto Kiwanis Club , Eric Angelo and two current chairmen ; Brent Burnside and Charlie Christensen to honor all the hard work the club does during the summer in Modesto. The North Modesto Kiwanis Club is a group of like-minded people who gather weekly to put on events in Modesto. Currently, 94 members strong; the North Modesto Kiwanis Club are always looking for members to join. They meet for breakfast at 7am every Thursday on Sisk Road at the Clarion Inn Hotel. If you love giving to our community, love serving children, and if you love the American Graffiti Festival in Modesto, the North Modesto Kiwanis Club is a perfect place to get involved. The North Modesto Kiwanis Club has been hosting fundraising events for different nonprofit organizations that benefit children in

Modesto and surrounding Stanislaus County area since the late 60’s. The American Graffiti Festival, Chicken a Go-Go bar-b-que, and pancake breakfasts are just a few events that raise funds to benefit our community. The funds they spend at any of these local events all go back into the community, specifically to benefit children. The funds benefit spiritual aims, youth services, sponsored youths, young children, and scholarships. The North Modesto Kiwanis Club are always looking for new nonprofits to team up and benefit from the raised funds. If you have a nonprofit that focuses on giving to children , this may be a great opportunity for you ! January 2018, my niece Myliis was born with different illnesses that prevented her from going home for four months after her birth. Myliis was transported to U.C Davis in Sacramento to get

the care she needed to keep her life. My family and I didn’t have the funding to stay in Sacramento for the four months for Myliis’s recovery. The only thing that allowed my family to be with Myliis during those months was the Kiwanis Club funding and unparallel giving. They have a Kiwanis Club Hotel next to UC Davis for families to stay close with their sick children. The Kiwanis Club made the difficult circumstances of having a sick child bearable. Without the Funding and love the Kiwanis Club donated to The Kiwanis Club Hotel, I don’t know if my niece would have made the recovery . I am forever grateful and proud of The North Modesto Kiwanis Club. Thank you for your dedication to our community and children.

ART Graffiti Summer by Jim Christiansen May Day. Modesto Porchfest was a lot of fun, but in all the joy of sharing music, meeting friends, showing some art at the home studio, I missed the Modesto View deadline. Good thing Chris and others busy with Porchfest too. I’m not the only one who added some additional activity to the event. I heard there were taco trucks, beer tastings, a pleasure to our nomadic audience members, that Art Walk and Downtown Market have considered to bolster our Monthly dedicated art events. Thanks to visitors for comments on the art on the fence. Had a Modesto theme and an oil painting I did of my porch in among the roses, and quite a few visits to the garage studio between sets. Painting of Minnie’s back door entrance a hit, and I miss doing the Graffiti Summer tee shirt series. School may be out for some, but art classes and art camps available at Mistlin Gallery and Chartreuse Muse for students of all ages. BAR

STAGE Summer Nights, Greased Lightning and Mooning by Shannon Carmack-Mize

South Side By Chris Murphy

Graffiti Summer is here and the key word for our summer cocktails is refreshing. I always find gin refreshing and this DoGood Cocktail from Divine Swine is just the ticket. When the day gets warm, something that has a nice lime taste with just a touch of sweetness is in order. If you head to Roseburg Square, you will find the Divine Swine, offering up amazing BBQ and other treats put before you sink your teeth into their food menu, start with pure refreshment and the super bonus, this drink is already made and waiting for you. The DoGood South Side is “on tap” and it is made fresh all the time. The goal of this was to get you a refreshing mixed drink really quickly, and that is good news on a hot day. You get a food and drink education when you visit Divine Swine. Robert Wilson and Scott Maynard are true experts and can guide you on your summer drink and BBQ exploration. Brittany Merrillo @britt.merrillo is a treat behind the bar, offering friendly advice to customers and she likes this drink as it really works for people that don’t know if they like Gin or not. She explains, ““People say this is not what they thought gin was, and people that normally don’t try gin, go for this and they find it really surprising”. They make this all year long. “Fresh squeezed lime is the most amazing part” Brittany says, it really sets this apart. This combination if great service, innovative cocktails and premium spirits are just a few of the things that keep people coming back to Divine Swine.

PERFORMANCE A Time to Perform in June By Kaye Osborn

June is our community’s tribute to American Graffiti: car shows concerts in the park, parades and dance. If you don’t know me, I LOVE to dance. It doesn’t matter the genre. I hear a tune and my body starts to move! This month the Modesto Symphony Orchestra has a very unique program: Beethoven Meets Graffiti. The first half of the program features Beethoven Symphony No. 8 in F Major, Op. 93. The second half features three commissioned works inspired by Modesto’s Graffiti Festival with the Central West Ballet. Hillebrandt: Valley Fever, Trumbor: Same Traffic, New Dance, Sabre: Graffiti Jive This is a very creative and exciting only-in-Modesto experience. I must admit, we have lots of homegrown talent to appreciate and support!

Smoky’s

It is always great to reunite with an old friend. In Modesto, there are some legendary traditions and some of our restaurants bring back great memories. One in particular is Smoky’s. Dean Brenner opened the original Smokey’s in the early 60’s located near 5 points at 222 McHenry, it was a regular spot for many in Modesto, especially those that worked near downtown but soon, it attracted people from all over. Allen Beebe later purchased the business and Mike Nelson, who was operating the Velvet Creamery was asked to manage Smoky’s and in 1990 became the owner. Mike, who is the brother of Modesto entrepreneur Dan Costa has a lot of restaurant and food management skills, expanded Smokey’s while operating the Creamery and sold it 12 years later to build his dream, Mike’s Roadhouse on Dale Road. After selling the Roadhouse to have more family time, he opened smaller Mike’s Grillhouse and later sold that to his manager. All the while, one thing was a constant: great service, fantastic food, excellent customer service creating a space where people like to be. That is the Mike Nelson touch. Darryl Johnson was a fan of Mike Nelson’s food since the early days of Mike’s Roadhouse on Dale Road and they have been friends for over 20 years. After Mike sold the Grillhouse, one thing led to another and in December 2017, they decided to team up to bring back the Smoky’s legend. Darryl had a family member that wanted to be in business and Mike Nelson was just the expert to partner with to start something new. One thing is for sure, great restaurants have owners that have a passion. You either have passion for restaurants or not. Those that are

is Back and Better than Ever By Chris Murphy

passionate and run a smart well-managed restaurant will succeed and grow. Mike explains, “You need to enjoy doing what you do and you have to be hands on in this business, know your costs, your food and your customers”. With this solid foundation and a possibility for new growth with Darryl’s family, this is the right combination. But none of this matters, unless the food blows your mind. It does. The Smoky’s Hall of Fames are the Cowboy Burger, fresh Harris Ranch patties, loaded with onion rings, cheese and so much more. If you are wondering what to get on your first time there, get this. The Tri Tip Sandwich is fresh daily beginning at 7 am to be ready for lunch this is perfect for visit two. Now for visit three, you have to try the chili cheese dog. Served with a side of fresh chopped onions, this is a fresh Miller hot dog cooked to perfection. Is your mouth watering yet? What do drink, Smoky’s make fresh ice cream milk shakes. All those years at Velvet Creamery, Mike knows how to make a fantastic shake. I can’t think of a better way to welcome back an old friend than with some of Modesto’s legendary BBQ treats, served by people you know and love. Morning commuters can rejoice as they

UNPLUGGED Gettin’ The Ladin Out by Aaron Rowan

June Movies

“What happens when a banjo player leaves Texas and goes to Oklahoma? The I.Q. goes up in both states.” - Joke told by a local bluegrass friend of mine. What will happen when a banjo player named Evie Ladin leaves Oakland and comes to Modesto? Find out for yourself when Moon & Sixpence Music And Art House welcomes Evie and her duo partner Keith Terry for a night of originals, deep interpretations of traditional songs, and the kinetic thrill of percussive dance. Evie & Keith are some of our most distinguished talent to date. The polyrhythmic heat of Evie’s clawhammer banjo has been heard from A Prairie Home Companion to the Lincoln Center to Hardly

Strictly Bluegrass. Keith brings tonal percussion to stand-up bass, and is a renowned percussionist/rhythm dancer and the founder of the International Body Music Festival. These two have developed a musical routine that you need to experience up close, full of Appalachian flavor and slaphappy body percussion. They’re in town Wednesday evening June 20, starting at 7:30pm. Cole Hinkle is a young rising country star of our local area, based in Lodi, who will open with a few songs. $15 cash only at the door. Find Moon & Sixpence at 500 9th St. between E & F, in back of the courtyard. Two nights later, George Cole & Eurocana will be in the moonhouse for my final presentation there until autumn. Bandleader and guitarist George Cole has dazzled audiences at musical landmarks from Carnegie Hall in New York to the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley. Eurocana features standup bassist & singer Kaeli Earle and guitarist/vocalist Madeline Tasquin, and is a little bit gypsy jazz, a little bit rock and roll, and a little bit French chanson. Come join this celebration of the Great American Songbook, with inspiration from Django Reinhardt thrown in. 8pm, $10. June is also a month of some of my favorite festivals. 6/1-6/3, the Berkeley World Music Fest will highlight cumbia, Sufi, Moroccan trance, Balkan, Chinese guzheng and other unique styles. Three days of free entertainment in various venues around downtown Berkeley. Saturday 6/9, the San Francisco Free Folk Festival is packed with world folk dance sessions, bluegrass & jug band jams, sea shanties, instrument workshops, and a nonstop lineup of performers on two stages. 12-10 PM at Everett Middle School in SF. Saturday 6/30, a sort of sequel to the recent Modesto Porchfest, Patio-Fest will feature 16 different performers on the patios of all the dining hot spots along J St. starting at 6 PM. Visit the Downtown Improvement District FB page for locations & info…or just follow the music!

Huge thank you to all the classic car owners, car clubs & Graffiti Summer event organizers for the amazing things you do for Modesto.

Car Shows don’t happen all by themselves. These are put on by dedicated people that care about their cause and want to promote it and Modesto is known for great car shows. This exactly describes Don Wood, the North Modesto Kiwanis American Graffiti Festival Parade Grand Marshal. Don is truly a champion for all things classic cars and he has been there as Modesto evolved from a Concourse d’Elegance to a Hot Rod Car Show. He also is presenting his own classic car show in August at Del Rio. Don Wood and his wife Margie are the drivers in so many local activities. One of the most fun is the Mid-Valley Chevy’s week-long travelling car show that lead up the big American Graffiti Festival. These shows are a lot of work, they take fostering a great relationship with the city, the car clubs, members of all ages and bringing these shows to life. We are proud to say that our American Graffiti heritage here in Modesto USA is strong thanks to people like Don Wood. Let’s meet Don Wood. Modesto View Where did you grow up? ? 2 6 ‘ N I U O y e R WHERE WE Cars, Dating, Cruising and Music. This was living. For Modesto USA, this is one of the most fun parts of our history. No video games, limited TV, a single radio station and a desire to hang out and downtown Modesto was the place to be. For those of you reading ModestoView for the first time, this is a true sense of civic pride that we are the home of George Lucas and our classic car culture was the inspiration for the young filmmaker during his high school years. The simple and fun lifestyle that George experienced growing up, surrounded by friends, comic books and cars is still vital here today and we are glad you are here to celebrate with us as we enjoy Graffiti Summer. American Graffiti is more than just a movie, it ushered in a new era of film and nostalgia. The impact of American Graffiti globally is uncalculateable as this legendary and fun to watch film lead to Happy Days, the Fonz, Laverne & Shirley, even arguably Mork and Mindy. The success of the film made it financially possible to make the movie George Lucas had always wanted to do; an epic space adventure, Star Wars. You

know what happened after that. It all started here in Modesto USA. We hope you enjoy this summer, get your poodle skirt, your white T-shirt, listen to Elvis and Buddy Holly and enjoy this classic feeling from our authentic yesteryears and make it a part of your summer and your future. The more you enjoy this, the more you will enjoy Modesto USA, A Classic American City. #graffitisummer #modestousa Graffiti Cruise Parade 2018 Big news for 2018, the Friday Night American Graffiti Festival Cruise Parade on June 8 is getting so popular, that the course will extend out to McHenry Village. This evolution is kind of cool as the cruise is expanding out north, like it did in the late 50s and early 60s. There will be a big turnaround at McHenry Village that will be great car watching. Of course, the place to be will be around 5 points where the circuit

Walk of Fame ............... .

By Chris Murphy

People need to know our fantastic story. In 2012, we created and established the Modesto Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame. This was important in many ways. First, when talking to George Lucas, he refers to himself as a storyteller. With that in mind, I wanted to do with the Cruise Route and Walk of Fame was to create a place where we continue to tell the story George started, celebrating the real people that were the inspiration for American Graffiti. What I have learned is, the people that inspired this film are even more interesting, and the friendships and experiences from this era are still vivid today. There are no shortage of Graffiti characters in Modesto USA and the Walk of Fame exists to keep those stories alive. See all of the inductees at www.modestocruiseroute.com Here are the 2018 inductees: Ecurie Awol Racing Club, Don Wood – 2018 Cruise Parade Grand Marshal , Paul Corgiat, Allen Grant, Jack McCoy, Roy Farriester

Ecurie Awol Car Club To many, the days of American Graffiti were built around the super muscle cars of the day, the Fords, Chevys, Dodges and Chryslers loaded with chrome and horsepower. But notice something in the film; Curt played by Richard Dreyfuss, has a Citroen Deux Cheveaux, not the traditional Ford or Chevy. There were groups of kids that loved racing and cars, but it was all about fast European racing cars, Ferraris, Lolas, MGs, Aston Martins, Porsches and more. Ecurie Awol “Ecurie” being French for racing team began in 1959-1960 whose members worked on their cars at Wes Gustafson’s Foreign Car Service on Scenic Drive, across the street from Scenic Drive In. Founding members included, Chuck Billington, Don Wixcel, Jeff Puccinelli, Derek Powell, Allen Grant and others. Most of the members were racers who appreciated the handling and agility of the foreign cars. Many of the races, called Autocross, were sometimes held in large parking lots, like McHenry Village or even Candlestick Park and featured tight technical tracks. George Lucas was a young member of Ecurie Awol and raced a small Fiat. George loved the speed and eventually rolled his car and he cut off the top and installed a roll bar, manufactured at Billington metal works and installed at Foreign Car Service. This roll bar would later save his life in a 1962 that destroyed the car and nearly killed Lucas. There were drivers that really changed the game and winning racers like Allen Grant were natural drivers and knew how to get the most out of cars like the AC Bristol, the car that became the foundation of the Shelby AC Cobra Racing Team. It was interesting to note that Ecurie meetings where held at Chuck Billington’s home, that also was home to the Faro’s Club of which his brother Dennis Billington was a member. Allen Grant tells us, “it was a small community, we all knew each other”.

converges. The Cruise Parade runs until approximately 8:30 but the registered cars will be allowed to return to park in downtown for a post parade Cruiseo-in Concert featuring a Buddy Holly Tribute from 9 -11 in 10th St Plaza. Bring your dancing sneakers. Remembering Harley’s Records By Chris Murphy One of the key elements to American Graffiti was the soundtrack. Previously, movies had music written for each film or musical. Graffiti was the first film to have the soundtrack play a key role in the script from start to finish. George Lucas’ love of music was legendary and he spent many a day browsing records at Harley’s Records, located then at 1218 J Street, now the home of VMI School of Music. I was so pleased to get this message from Harley Cox’s daughter Marny about her memories of Harley’s. “I am Marny Cox Greer, one of three daughters of James Harley Cox, who was the owner of Harley’s Records. Also, I am a 1962 graduate of TDHS and I now live in North Carolina. I have attached some old pictures of Harley’s Records. One includes a picture of Harley at the cash register. Harley’s was a very small, friendly store run by both my parents. My mother helped customers with their record selections and purchases. (She remembered spending time with George listening to music and talking about music.) My dad spent a lot of his time in the back part of the store repairing all types of small electrical equipment.”

Allen Grant By Chris Murphy Downey High School 1958

There are some people that are larger than life. Modesto’s connection to the movie American Graffiti has certainly made that case. One of the cool things is that the characters that were created in the film could be so many people in our community and those that were the inspiration for those, really stand out. Allen Grant is a racer through and through, and he was an inspiration for John Milner. Allen and George Lucas became friends in 1959 through their love of fast foreign cars. They were both part of the Ecurie Awol car club. Allen discovered the handling of MGs and AC Bristols and had a history of winning and he had the flash of a winning driver. When he turned 21 he obtained his Sports Car Club of America racing license and started road racing. He won 12 of 14 races and the Rookie of the Year honors. George Lucas was his Crew Chief at every race from San Diego to Seattle. Allen would soon land a job at Carroll Shelby’s shop first in the shop as a welder and then a manager but he wanted to race. He worked a Cobra car sale and landed a driving job with the new owner. In 1963, George Lucas joined him again for the new Cobra they were going to race for Coventry Motors out of Walnut Creek. George created the yellow black striped paint job, named the car “Executor”, and they readied the car for a winning streak winning 6 out of 7 races. Soon after, George began USC film school and his filmmaking career and Allen kept racing returning to Shelby, winning the prestigious Monza beating out the legendary Ferraris and European drivers. Allen’s driving skills significantly contributed to the Shelby Cobra team winning the World Championship for GT cars; The first and only American team to do so. Allen and George teamed up again in 1989, creating Lucasfilm Racing lasting a single season with his construction and development career and the George’s film work preventing this idea from continuing. Today, Allen has a car collection of many one-of-akinds, most famously the 63 Lola GT Factory car, recently featured on Jay Leno’s Garage and multiple award winners. Allen lives in LaQuinta, Ca and has an expansive motorshop and he continues in development today. I asked Allen what we need to do to get the next generation involved in cars. He replied: “Keeping the next generation interested in Motorsports is a concern of mine. One of things I have been doing is encouraging car clubs and promoters of car events to include events designed for kids. One that we are in the process of developing is having pedal car races. This would include getting business’ to sponsor a car and paint it in their company colors”. Sounds like a great idea to us. Allen Grant on George Lucas. “George designed the yellow livery on our Cobra racing car. He was also my crew chief; we won 6 out of 7 races with that car and earned me a ride on Carroll Shelby’s World Championship winning team in 1965. Having George Lucas on my team was a pleasure. He was an excellent crew chief. He made sure the car was meticulously prepared and maintained and ready to race. At the time he was a regular guy who was passionate about cars and racing” Allen Grant on Cruising “My best memories of “Dragging 10th Street” were from 1957-59. I had a 1950 Pontiac Catalina 2 door hardtop. My buddies had a ‘46 Mercury, ‘49 Chevrolet, ‘50 Ford etc. We would work on our cars...lowered them, installed Moon and flicker hubcaps, installed Smitty mufflers etc. At night we would drag 10th St because we could see the reflection of our cars in the windows of the stores (Sears, Montgomery Wards, Kress’s etc) We liked dragging 10th St because early on it was a two way Street. We would turn around in Jim Cook’s Tire store parking lot at G St at one and Burge’s Drive In at the other end. This had a distinct advantage over the later one-way route in that when 10th was a two-way street we could not only see all the other cars but we could see all the girls! After a few trips we would pull into Burges and typically order a Cherry Coke and French Fries and hopefully hook with some cute girls!” We are proud to induct Allen Grant into the Legends of the Cruise, Walk of Fame.

The Future of American Graffiti As we celebrate the class of 1962, what are we doing to celebrate the classes of 2018 and beyond? How do we translate the love of this time into the future? First, we have to build a theme for Modesto that we are truly the Home of American Graffiti and the Home of George Lucas for two important reasons. One: There are new car buffs and we need to capture that spirit for the cars of this generation and the customizers that are making them. The Cars and Coffee movement, 209 Hot Rods, The Modesto Impalas, and the Modesto Customs in Modesto are a key springboard to this next generation. The musical soundtracks may be different, but the sound of roaring engines are still the same. Two: With Modesto being all things George Lucas, we bring in the comic book fans, the Raiders of the Lost Ark fans and of course, the global Star Wars fan base. There is a lot to be said that the story of Star Wars is the same escape struggle that is found in American Graffiti and Raiders of the Lost Ark and Modesto USA is the home for all of this. It is up to us to connect all of the dots and celebrate. Cars and Coffee Who are the people that love the car culture in the future? Well friends, the future is here now and the car people of tomorrow participate in the monthly Coffee and Cars in downtown Modesto, open to new, import and exotic cars as well as the classics. These events are packed with young and old, multicultural and boys and girls, men and women. Modesto’s love affair with the car will continue thanks to these events. There are two groups, Cars and Coffee Modesto and the 209 Hot Rods and Event that present shows. The next 209 Hot Rods Riverbank event is on June 17 8-11 am. The next downtown Cars and Coffee Modesto event should be on June 24 8 am – 11 am Historic Cruise Route Do you want to know why Modesto USA is such a cool place to live and visit? Paul Corgiat is a life long resident of Modesto. Growing up on the family orchard he attended St. Stanislaus School and graduated from Modesto High School class of 1958. While in high school Paul played football, was on the swim team and was a member of the “Regs”. His love of fast cars and pushing the boundaries was legendary. Paul’s first car was a 1934 Ford that he acquired in pieces. He was able to reassemble the car and get it running in order to make the scene cruising 10th Street, going to Burge’s Drive-In and hanging out in the Lucky’s parking lot on “L” Street. Back in the day there was little else young men and women to do except cruising, the midnight movie at the State Theater and the occasional trip to the Tuesday night “grudge racing” at Kingdon Drag Strip up in Lodi or some other local street. Many of these streets are now well within Modesto’s city limits. Back then, it was “Dragging 10th” and an engine rev match at a streetlight could quickly turn into a drag race on Blue Gum by the old State Hospital (now MJC West) or Paradise road, easily accessible from 9th and 10th Streets downtown and before the freeway was built, you could just cross the tracks to race. Paul would hang out at Burge’s, with cars parked 4-5 deep and one night, Paul and his friend backed out and lit it up when they went back to cruise and ended up in a chase with the MPD through the orchards, ultimately escaping. Downside was everyone knew everybody and the car was ID’d and the police where there the next day. This escapade landed them in the Modesto Bee for a 100 MPH chase. Paul married his sweetheart Vicky Brown in 1960 and went to work for the railroad in ’61. Throughout his life Paul has been an avid motor sports fan and has been an active street rodder for more than 30 years. As a hometown boy Paul has been able to maintain many old friendships and make many new friends through the years. American Graffiti isn’t just about cars, it’s also about the people you meet along the way. Paul says” It is so cool that so many people from those days are still here in town. We just had our 60th Modesto High Reunion and there where so many people there”. Paul still enjoys these friendships today, takes tours with his 41 Cadillac. “It really was just like George Lucas captured in the movie. No TV or video games, one radio station and we all went downtown to hang out. It was a special time”

Jack plowed a loop around the corrals and barn to race horses and later bicycles. This is where he learned his first lessons about suspensions and gear ratios. Jack began working for McCoy Tire and he bought his first race car, a ‘36 Ford Coupe for $25 and stripped it down with friend Marvin Russell. They prepped the car raced it at Modesto 99 Speedway (now the home of the Stanislaus County Public Works Department on Morgan Road) under the name of Stoneage Jackson as the driver so that Jack’s parents would remain oblivious to the start of his racing career and he began to race regularly. His parents soon became aware that Jack had been racing his Ford. Jack learned there was a local hotshot that was building fast Chrysler engines in winning cars. Enter Charlie “Mr. Mopar” Bell in Jack’s life and he abandoned the Blue Oval brand. This was the start of a life-long partnership between the two. Charlie left his job at the local Dodge dealership and partnered with Bobby Gaines to form Bell and Gaines Racing. Finally Charlie could build racing engines full time. Jack was required to race only Dodges or Plymouths if Charlie was going to build engines for him, which he did for the remainder of his career. Jack used to pull the engines from his race car and install them in his Plymouth coupe, which made him the fastest car on 10th and 11th Streets in downtown Modesto. Jack campaigned his Mopars mostly on the West Coast (very successfully) until he ventured into the lair of NASCAR at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia to compete with his heroes like Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt. This departure from the West Coast led him to be the first driver from California to race a winged 1970 Dodge Super Bird in the prestigious Daytona 500. Jack won a record 54 races in the 1960s and 1970s in NASCAR’s regional series, known at various times as Grand National West, Winston West and Pacific Coast Late Model Series. He finished first in the final standings in 1966 and 1973. He and his wife took 2nd in the legendary Cannonball Express race across America in 37 hours, 50 min Jack later teamed with friends, the late Chuck Billington and Don Monaco to build a Ford Flathead Lakester that topped 161 miles per hour at Dry Lakes in El Mirage. Jack balanced the racing with his work at McCoy Tire Co. and his home life with his wife, Peggy Joyce McCoy, and seven children. Jack passed away in 2009 and was a hot rodder till the end.

Modesto’s hometown heroes? What were the rock and roll radio stations? What are the local fraternities and sororities? What was Playland and the Fable Room? These questions and more are answered on the Historic Cruise Route Walking Tour in Downtown Modesto, located on 10th, 11, G and K Streets. This is one of the most informational walking tours you can take. Each of the 25 markers has a special QR code that pops up a special video featuring the Legends of the Cruise. So take the time, walk the Cruise Route and learn about our city. www.modestocruiseroute.com Classic Mural Tour I love it when people visit Modesto and we get to show off our city. Everyone is excited to learn about our American Graffiti history and walking in downtown Modesto is always fun, going from the movies, to dinner to hear a show or late night cocktails. On your downtown tour, check out the amazing Classic Community Murals and Murals In Motown. These are beautiful pieces of art celebrating classic cars, chrome, the movies, cruising, music, our agriculture history, hometown heroes and so much more. Make sure you check these out and you and your guests will be impressed.

By Pete Hischier, Chris Murphy & Farriester family There is a part of Roy Farriester in most Modesto street rods. For decades, Farriester Auto Wreckers was the hangout. The car guys and clubs used to pick and pull the parts to rebuild their cars. Roy lived most of his life in Modesto. From an early age he loved cars and hot rods and the people who were involved with them; drag racing, hanging out at Burge’s Drive-In and cruising 10th Street and all the things kids did for fun. Roy Farriester was a student at Modesto High School during that time and he did all those things and more! Roy drove a ‘36 Ford sedan back then. He was a founding member of the Throttlers Car Club in 1950. In July of 1952 Diane Center tagged along with her friend, Vita Evans, who had to pick up something at the cleaners. After their errand they went into “The Long Dog” which was a little hot dog stand across from Modesto High School. Roy and Diane met there that day and began steady dating. Diane was a freshman and Roy was a sophomore. Roy taught her how to drive in his father’s 1946 Lincoln Zephyr V12. During their dating years Diane had to be home by 10:00pm. One evening she had special permission to stay out later so she could see all of the movie “Quo Vadis”. She fell asleep before it was over and missed it after all. Usually Roy would take Diane home at her 10:00 o’clock curfew and then head back to 10th Street, or whatever street that was serving as the local “drag strip” at that time. A popular pastime was oiling the street corner of 10th and burning their tires when they drove through it. Roy’s ‘36 gave way to a ‘40 Ford sedan about this time. Roy and Diane got married in December of 1954 and they had a son Mark and a daughter Sherrie who sadly passed away two years after Roy. Anybody who ever did a backyard repair job on their car has probably done business with Farriester’s Auto Wreckers. His son Mark attended Beyer High and MJC and joined him at the wrecking yard. Roy enjoyed working there until the end of his life as it was his passion. Sadly the wrecking yard closed in 2013. Roy owned many cars over the years. He was well remembered is his custom Chevy by Winfield, and later his tall T. Of course, everybody is familiar with Roy’s black ‘41 Ford Sedan that was his trademark for many years. Roy suffered a serious heart attack in 1981 but recovered and continued as one of Modesto’s greatest supporters of Street Rodding and all things pertaining to the 50’s era. Roy passed away in 2011 at 75 and we celebrate him as a legend of the Cruise

SONGWRITING The Gleam In Dad’s Eye by Patty Castillo Davis

The answer to “Where Were You In ’62?” is the title of my column this month. My stoic, quiet Dad, Alonzo Castillo is the sole reason I am in BIG love with Linda Ronstadt today. He cultivated a musical environment from which I gleaned influences from Tex-Mex, Motown, Folk, Country, Mariachi and Rock to create my own original sound. There was never any censorship impact on my sonic enjoyment, no volume control unless it would compete with his listening. There would be no song concepts without Cash, be no lyrics without Linda, no melodies without Merle, no accomplishment without Aretha. Thanks Dad for laying the foundation for an Arts rich home and your continued support. Deva Café on J Street has a cool lineup of entertainment in June- everything from Pop to Reggae and every style in between. Sunday Breakfast music is the side dish to the delicious crepes, savory scrambles and bottomless Mimosas-6/3 brings Tim and Patty, 6/10 Koala and the Golden Boy, 6/17 Nathan Ignacio, and 6/24 Natalie Marie Pizzo. Thursday, June 21, Tea will release her original EP “Shallow” in a showcase with supporting artists- Seven Year Sleep, Sol Riddim with DJ

music by Joseph Walker. Doors 6pm, show at 7pm, gate $5. On Friday, June 22, BoHo artist Josephine Johnson comes through Modesto to support her new album with a show at 7pm. The Barkin Dog Grill will host the DB Project in it’s mission to raise funds for disadvantaged children when it partners with GK Music. Prolific young musicians will perform on Friday, June 1 at 7pm. This is a free show but donations will be greatly appreciated. On Friday, June 15, Willie Hines and Patty Castillo Davis team up again at the Dog for a night of original music and reinventing cover songs full of harmonies joined by some special guests. This is a free show and reservations are strongly suggested. Red Tie Arts is presenting it’s first show of 2018 on June 9 at Lucca Winery in Ripon. FIT

Go Modesto: Benefit for Prospect Theater

Fitness Bursts by Efren Martinez The standard has been set up for years, long workouts are the most beneficial to your overall health and life span. Or are they? Just recently all this has changed. New studies out now are continually starting to show that fitness bursts are and can be just as effective as those long, moderate pace workouts. This is great news for those who have a very busy lifestyle between work, family and our household responsibilities. Life’s coming at you fast and getting into a gym for an hour several times a week just isn’t doable sometimes. Friends, no worries. The new studies that are now being published say that yes, you can actually reap much greater benefits by exercising in short, high-intensity bursts known as intervals than you can exercising for longer periods at a slower steady pace. Data showed that participants who got less than 20 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) a day were at the highest risk of death among the entire group. MVPA included brisk walking, bicycling slower than 10 miles per hour, tennis, gardening, water aerobics and ballroom dancing. By comparison, those who got 60 to 99 minutes a day of MVPA were about

half as likely to have died, and those who got 100 or more minutes a day were three-quarters less likely to have died. Studies also found that sustaining bouts of physical activity played no factor in overall health. The accumulated minutes of exercise had the same benefit, regardless of whether the physical activity was performed in short bursts throughout the day or in concentrated sessions that were at least 5 or 10 minutes in duration. So instead of dress shoes you generally wear to work, sport some athletic shoes so that you can incorporate some sudden bursts of fitness throughout your day. Some of my recommendations would be the take the stairs as often as you can instead of the elevator, always park father away from your destination, walking at a brisk walk whenever possible and even skipping rope in place for just a few minutes several times a day. All this will do wonders to achieving your MVPA.

COMEDY Hello, hello, hello Hello, hello, hello. It’s June and it is HOT out. How hot is it? So hot I’m pretty sure I ovulated a poached egg. 209 comedy is hot, too--so hot I can no longer mention every show because there are too many to fit in 400 words. Fear not! All comedy events are still listed in the calendar at the back of the paper. There are shows with just comedy, there is an open mic to give comedy a try or watch comics polishing their acts, there are shows with comedy and music, even a show with magic. Go out, laugh, support local entertainers and repeat. [See, that was already 107 words.] Over two years in comedy I have reached a lot of milestones and have even started producing some shows. What never changes? The questions How/why did you get into comedy? I fantasized about stand-up comedy. I grew up a huge fan of sketch comedy, but life and pragmatism took over so comedy was pushed aside. I decided to do my first open mic after I’d delivered the eulogy at my father’s funeral and managed to get a few laughs. I usually leave out the last

by Felicia Aleman part because comedy civilians think it’s too dark. Honestly, most comics start as fans, then somehow wander on stage. No matter the story, once you’re on stage you either hate it or love it and keep going. I think everyone who asks this question secretly wants to perform. If that’s you, go for it! Oopsy. I do have to mention one show. Serena Gamboa is producing a show to benefit the Marine Corps League. The show is June 28, 8-10, with a $10 cover at the Stanislaus Veterans Center in Modesto. Open to all so please show up and support our Veterans. This month’s video interview is with Jason Sohm. Jason may be a father of two from Manteca, but no corny dad jokes here. Jason says all the things about fatherhood and marriage that everyone else is thinking but are too afraid to say—probably because he is always at some stage of quitting smoking. Jason will feature at the Father’s Day Funnies show at Stanislaus Brewing Co. in Modesto on June 16 or find him on social media for upcoming shows. Check out this month’s video at ModestoView.com for more.

Being Alone

Spring is a tough act to follow, God created June -Al Bernstein

It’s Gemini season! This means June should be spent with your friends doing things that are energetic and intellectual! This is a month to be conscious of your environment, figuratively and literally. Be sure to surround yourself with positive and inspiring people, while also loving our earth by recycling and producing less gas waste! The zodiac season of Gemini is ruled by Mercury, which is the guardian of transportation. When is the last time you hopped on your bike to eat downtown or get to Concert in the Park? Biking around town is also a great way to get more in touch with your surroundings! A young, local business that I am extremely ex-

cited about is “Heavenscent”! This is a growing beauty product shop that uses natural ingredients, pure vitamins and essential oils in their body scrubs, bath soaks, bath truffles, soaps, bath bombs and much more! The owner Alicia O’Beirne explained to me that once she got pregnant, she realized how many harsh chemicals are in the products on our store shelves. This encouraged her to research and discover how to make the best products possible, that are all natural. Not only are these items healthy for you, but they are also beautiful and smell good! Alicia can even customize the formula of her products based on your skin type! If you want to support this lovely business, search @heavenscent_byalicia on Instagram! This is where you can look at products and make orders! A very exciting event happening at The State Theatre is “Bring Your Own Dog” movie nights! At the last BYOD event, 77 dogs attended!!! Mark your calendars because on Thursday, June 28 at 7pm, The State will have a dog friendly showing of “Best in Show”, a comedy about the competitive dog show industry. This is an event you and your furry friend won’t want to miss!

Being alone is a state which we rarely experience anymore. Even sitting at home alone we are often connected with our social network. We can continuously receive or send out messages, either through the internet or our phones. We hardly feel lonely anymore. Being and staying connected has become a habit. There are still short moments where we could be alone but instead are compelled to call or text someone. What drives this impulse? Are we afraid of being alone? May be life seems more colorful, interesting and fun in connection with others. We feel stimulated and learn about other people’s ideas and viewpoints. But aren’t there also good reasons to be alone? I find that I am calmer when I am alone and that my thinking becomes clearer. With time belonging to me I can be more creative. I don’t need to adjust to other people. Instead I am able to follow my own needs. I believe it takes an interest in oneself to be comfortable with being alone. It is a chal-

lenge. At first I find I’m dealing with a sense of boredom, of not knowing what to do with myself. But once I can get past that I find being alone very gratifying. I perceive and experience myself and the world around me in a different way. It is only when we are alone that we can find ourselves. For more info go to : taichi4modesto.com, or call (209)572-4518

BARGAIN Summertime Savings! By Monica Barber

Sipping her Iced Tea outside Preservation Coffee and Tea amid the afternoon hustle of the work-week is one of Ms. M’s favorite things to do. It’s been a while since the weather has been this pleasant and inviting. The best part of Modesto is sitting down and taking it in. There’s plenty to do for almost nothing so there’s no reason you should be missing out on all the fun in the sun this June. Start your month off on the right foot with a classic movie. Summer break isn’t the same without a nice trip to the theatre for a matinee. June 2nd marks the annual screening of American Graffiti at The State Theater. Catch the movie for the great deal of $5 begins playing at 4pm so grab your friends and get in line to see this incredible film! http://www.thestate.org/ As Summertime begins a great Modesto tradition is welcomed back! MoBand’s Annual season for Concert In The Park kicks off June 7th and everyone is invited back for the show. Moband will highlight the hits of yesteryear to pay homage to Graffiti Night. Bring your loved

ones to appreciate the night. Participate in the tradition and toss out your blankets Wednesday night to save your space in Graceada Park. Music begins at 8pm. www.moband.org Hot temperatures bring out everybody in Modesto in time for Graffiti Night! On June 8th the annual Modesto Kiwanis Classic Car Parade travels through Downtown Modesto. Head downtown before 6:30pm and get a front row situation for this stunning showcase of classic cars. The course goes from downtown to Mchenry Ave to Orangeburg and back downtown. Immediately following the parade stay and hang out downtown on the Historic Graffiti Cruise Route. http://www.americangraffitifestival.com/ A little art is just what the soul needs. Immerse yourself in creativity and head out for the June Art Walk in downtown Modesto on the third Thursday. Make your way to all the stops and enjoy some of the areas most talented artists and musicians. Put aside some time on June 21st between 5pm-9pm for a nice walk to that will tickle your senses and soul. Map and info: http://modestoartwalk.com/ End your month by rocking out to some Music in the Plaza The free music season is back for the Summer months and June 29th invites Triple D to entice you to put on your dancing shoes for the evening. Turn out and appreciate this family well disposed occasion from 7-9pm. https://www.facebook.com/10thStreetMusic/
