I’ll bet you can’t guess that I love Graffiti Summer in Modesto USA. This is one of the best seasons of the year where our city shouts out to the world that we are a really authentic cool city and are the #homeofamericangraffiti. Why is this so cool? It is more than just the novelty about having a globally famous movie made about Modesto, but it really reminds us of what we love about our community, where we have the friendship and the community of a small town. But as we have grown and new people move and work here or visit, we have become more cosmopolitan and we add the new, the trendy, the tasty, the interesting and mix it all up in this wonderful cocktail we call Modesto. Medium sized cities like Modesto are poised to become not just a plan C place to live, but with portability of jobs in tech, and growing companies like Gallo, Modesto is becoming an attractive option, affordable, interesting, engaging and a really good place to start a family. There are many neighborhoods close to downtown and you see more and more people walking and exploring. Big summer events like Graffiti Summer get people out and about, and this is a great chance to share our authentic Modesto history with our kids, friends and visitors. I know that when my friends or customers visit Modesto, they leave with a really positive and upbeat impression of our city. We can all do this and hope you take the opportunity to show off our city. Our BigView this month showcases so many things to do and experience this month that hopefully will be some sort of inspiration for you, whether it be a car show, a new diner, a new band, a patio cocktail or an evening with MoBand in

the Graceada Park, there is really something for everyone. Really special this month is the Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame, where we get to celebrate our local people that were the inspiration for American Graffiti, the instigators of mischief, the racers, and car customizers that were the story behind the story. Our people are our best history and it is good to celebrate them. I hope you will join me in 10th St Plaza on June 5th as we unveil the new Walk of Fame markers. But no matter what you do, we are counting on you to be our messengers of positive living, teamwork, civic involvement and will take action to make Modesto better. It was truly amazing last month, even with the serious threats of rain, how many people went house to house, porch to porch to hang out, listen to music and meet new people at Porchfest. This is how we build community and we can

always find new ways to do that. Thanks Kate, Ruhi and Trisha for creating this wonderful event. Thank you for reading, sharing, and posting ModestoView. MoBand Turns 100

For as long as we can remember, these

amazing summer Thursday nights with MoBand and 3,000 of your friends in the Mancini Bowl bandshell at Graceada park, with food, drink, wine, and fun sounds have made the perfect evening; a hall of fame slice of Modestocana. This 100-year season begins with a MoBand 100 Year exhibit at the McHenry Museum running until midJuly. This will be a beautiful evening as the ribbon is cut on the 100 Years of MoBand history exhibit at the Museum that will be on display through the middle of July. June and July in Modesto’s Graceada Park, enjoy the sights and sounds of the 100th Year Modesto Band of Stanislaus County’s Concerts in the Park. The blankets are out early, the wine is ready, the picnics are made and the music starts at 8 pm, for six Thursdays and thanks to MoBand Sponsors and the Night at the Bowl fundraiser (see below) these Concerts in the Park are FREE. MAMA VIEW By Middagh Goodwin Can you believe it has been 20 years since

Murphy and Ricci first dreamed up the idea for the Modesto Area Music Awards? The First MAMA Awards Show was hosted at Club Maxx in the year 2000, and it was packed and featured only seven categories. How things have changed and in some ways stayed the same in the last 20 years. Since the start of the MAMAs, several new categories have been added or better defined, and a few have been retired at least for the time being. With three times the categories and hundreds of nominees MAMA has become the entertainment gathering of the year. This year the awards show is scheduled for Tuesday, October 15th and will once again take place at the historic State Theatre. We are working on some fun things to celebrate this momentous occasion. We strive every year to give the best experience possible but this year we are pulling out all the stops. Mark your calendars you will not want to miss out on this year’s celebration. If you are a promoter, event coordinator, venue owner, former MAMA winners; we want to know who you think should get mamanated this year? Which bands are stepping up and bringing crowds, new events that have exceeded expectations, a new venue that should be considered? We

need your input to continue to make the awards show and process better. But did you know that the Modesto Area Music Association is a 501c3 Non-Profit? That not only have they been raising money for music scholarships but also have helped book over a hundred gigs for bands since just last year? Curating Music in the Plaza, PatioFest, music at Stanislaus County Fair and the Sampler. Also sharing our contacts with local venues and promoters so they can book even more events. MAMAs true mission is to continue to help build and create a more vibrant entertainment com-

munity. How can we help you? In Memoriam

Modesto lost two of our cultural characters. Harley Cooney, also known as the Mayor of J Street has passed away. The former Army Vet owned Action Rubber Stamp in downtown from 1962-1989. He was a regular fixture in downtown Modesto, in particular at his table at Deva Cafe and was loved by so many. His happy spirit will be missed and his charm and love of downtown Modesto will never be forgotten. Also passing away last month was Ivory Lubie, regularly seen wearing her tiara, was a regular at many a downtown location, primarily Minnie’s and the Boardroom. Her story fascinating as a former dance hall owner in San Francisco and as columnist for the SF Examiner back in the day. You always had a great conversation with Ivory. These are the people that brighten our day, and we will always remember them as they were unforgettable.

ART VIEW Pick & Gather By Jim Christiansen June for me often opens at the Riverdance Farms Pick and Gather festival, where I started with a watercolor for their fliers, and show art, and help get local bands on our shade house stage. It’s a fun project, and again opens June 1 and 2, with artists, crafters in the mix. That’s in Livingston, at 1230 Livingston-Cressey Road. The rest of June often includes drawing crowds and cars during Graffiti Summer events. I’ve done Graffiti Night and cruise related tee shirts and bumper stickers as satire, as official shirts for Minnie’s, and many other June Modesto Events. Check out the numerous Cruise related murals by FASM and other artists around town. And if you’re interested in commissioning a piece of art related to our Graffiti Summer culture, get hold of artists like Mark Navarro, who do some excellent images and car art. Saw a good one in the window of Dragon Fly Art for Life on J Street This year I’m exporting two Modesto Graffiti Summer themed paintings to Lodi, called Downtown Parking and Tangled up in Traffic for a show titled “Coffee Cats and Other Genres” as featured artist for Lodi Art Hop at Hutchins Street Square. The show hangs June 3, reception and Lodi First Friday Art hop June 7. The show hangs all month at the Thompson Theater in Hutchins Street Square complex. Artists seeking a place to hang their work, take note. Papachino’s is starting a monthly rotation of local artists and put out a call for artists. Stop in at the restaurant to get more information and get on the list. When I reposted that call for artists, Café Bliss in Oakdale also seeking artists, good place to show. Contentment Brewing By Brandilyn Brown and Christopher Mitchell

Alejandro (Alex) Serrato and his wife Abena Darden are opening up Modesto’s newest brewery this month. This is a brewery we have been personally waiting on pins and needles for, because we heard rumors about it’s humble beginnings when the local homebrew shop Barley and Wine closed in 2018. The beer community has been anxiously waiting for tidbits of information ever since then! Lucky us we have information for you! We met Alex at the United Cerebral Palsy event Sips and Treasures, and were able to sample some of his delicious homebrew including an ESB and a porter-which was great considering you can’t get Alex’s beer at the taproom right now. If you want it, you must wait til they are open or find an event he is pouring homebrew for. Alex started brewing in the early 2000’s, starting as so many of us do with a “More Beer Kit” from Orchard Supply, and eventually got into pouring his beers at events and discovered not only did he make beer he liked, he made beer liked by all. I asked Alex what beer got him into brewing, “My favorite beer is a pale ale. You can tell a lot about a brewer by their pale ale.” Six years ago he dreamed of opening Contentment Brewing, and this dream become reality in small steps since 2016. Alex stressed what a big help Opportunity Stanislaus was to them as a resource when getting things off the ground. With Alex’s background and training in the Air Force and a local school district, he used his experience to help build the taproom with friends like Andrew Molica, who has also dedicated his life to beer and brewing. The taproom has an Industrial theme featuring artwork depicting ranches, dairies, canneries, and all-around agriculture to pay homeage to the building itself. The location is near MJC, which is perfect for those not wanting to delve into downtown every time they want a good beer. There are pool tables and a shuffle board for enjoying with your buddies, with plenty of seating for friends who would rather sit and chat. They are also dog-friendly, and outside food is allowed in.There is ample parking, too. “We want to be a pillar in the community-we took our name from Modesto’s slogan. We want to serve our community and do things like river clean up days, to be a meeting place for people.” said Alex, when we asked what he wants our readers to know about Contentment. You can’t create authenticity and you can

find loads of it at Fast Eddie’s M.O.A.B., Meal On A Bun. Flat out, this place holds the title of the longest running restaurant in the same location in Modesto, now operating in the same place since 1952. “Fast” Eddie Gibson started there in 1962 as a Roosevelt 8th grader, picking up trash, taking out the garbage and peeling potatoes right in the middle of the classic cruise era. Located on Tully Rd, MOAB saw it’s share of action as a pre and post cruise hangout now for over 67 years. The best part is, that everything tastes the same as it did then, and that’s what keeps people coming back for more, sometimes daily. Eddie Gibson worked his way up at MOAB. Sidney and Felicia Cheatham who already had the Walking Chicken diner at 1627 Paradise Road in the 40s. In 1947 they opened a new 1st and H Street diner across from Modesto High which would become the 1st M.O.A.B. In 1952 they opened the location on Tully. They would then sell M.O.A.B to Betty and Arlin Young. In 1965 Eddie’s parents Bob and Vi McCarthy bought M.O.A.B. After a tour in Vietnam during 1969-70, Eddie returned to M.O.A.B in 1971 and attended MJC. In 1975, Eddie purchased M.O.A.B. from his parents and he has been there running the show since. His business secrets are simple, make it good, make it good all the time, be in the restaurant and know your customers. How did M.O.A.B. get it’s name? In the 1940s, Erv Keller, of Keller’s fame, then working for Modesto Paper was trying to get the paper business of the soon to be

The burger was so big, that he wrapped it with the now signature 12 x 12 checkerboard paper using a toothpick to hold it together and Erv exclaimed, “this is a Meal on a Bun”. And the rest is history and the new restaurant had a name. I asked Eddy, what is one of the highlights about owning and running a Modesto tradition like M.O.A.B. and he replied, “that people come in and say, I ordered this burger 20 years ago and it is still exactly the same”. Going out to eat is an experience, and a visit to MOAB is exactly that. The current dining room was once an outdoor patio when it was just a walk-up window flat topped drive-in diner. The walk up part hasn’t changed, but the dining room is a tour of memories and classic Modestocana. A couple of Eddie’s favorite items are the old Schwinn he restored, a soap box racer that was sponsored by City Tire and a vintage lamppost. All of these things are surrounded by photos, drawings from customers, and a variety of pictures of Eddy skydiving. It was on jump number 3213. Months later, he got his cast off on the 12th and did another jump on the 13th. He has 6666 jumps now. Which brings

us to his nickname “Fast” Eddie. 40 years ago, a 7-year old girl on the way to soccer practice said “make my lunch Fast Eddie, we’re late” and it just stuck. When he started skydiving, the name was cemented and he has been the fast man ever since. You get the idea that Fast Eddie is a character, and he is. But is all gets down to the diner, the food and the attention to detail. He is a stickler for cleanliness and quality and his longtime manager Camille Nogueira has been his right hand for over 14 years. The BFD, the Burger Fries and Drink has been a staple for decades and he puts pride and quality into every burger. Eddie is right, the burger is amazing. Sure there are a whole bunch of boutique burgers out there, but you want a burger that always tastes good, and combined with some fresh fries and a real ice cream milkshake, this is just about the best Graffiti Summer meal you can get. But don’t stop there, they have an amazing Philly Cheesesteak and their Hot Dogs are excellent. A little known

fun fact is that M.O.A.B was one of the first-ever chicken burgers, as a result of originating as the Walking Chicken. This amazing chicken burger tradition is still going today and don’t forget the deep fried zucchini. Graffiti Summer and Graffiti night have always been a special occasion. Although MOAB is not on the cruise route, it was always a gathering place before and after cruising, with a busy parking lot into the night with decades of regular customers. It’s kind of crazy that some people I meet haven’t heard of M.O.A.B, but hopefully we can change that and it just may become on of your favorite traditions too. Today you will still see Eddie, cleaning up trash in the parking lot, making sure it’s right.

enal second season of live music at Moon & Sixpence Music And Art House. One of very few listening-room venues in Modesto, we’ve seen our share of standing-ovation talent take the stage in this DIY space since opening two years ago. Our finale concert on June 20 will showcase one of my personal favorite instruments, which I don’t get to feature often enough - the flute, played here by international touring musician Rebecca Kleinmann. Rebecca moves effortlessly between numerous styles including jazz improv, flamenco, and Brazilian choro. Her Quarteto Jacaré features fellow international artists Rafael Amarante on guitar, Rafael Barata on drums and Scott Thompson on bass. This exciting new group features original music composed by all band members as well as new takes on Brazilian classics. ‘Jacaré’ is Portuguese for ‘alligator,’ and as someone once said about Beethoven’s music, “he puts doves and crocodiles in the same cage.” You can bet that Rebecca and friends will bring the same dynamic to wrap up our season. The American Spirit There’s definitely something uniquely American about American Graffiti - whether we are talking about George Lucas’ movie that made Modesto famous or the American graffiti as an art genre. As far as I know, graffiti is about recognition. It’s a way of stating one’s identity on a wall or a train car, a tree or a rock : I am somebody, I was here. I made my mark. American Graffiti is an expression of the American spirit. One can find imitations of it in many parts of the world. In Germany, for example they have similar car cruises using old American cars from the 50, 60ties and onward. I have seen Germans copy all that goes along with it. The clothes, the hairdos, the food, the toys and the design. They love our culture! Why? Because it shows the perseverance of a youthful energy and unlimited imagination that we all had at a High School age. Something to celebrate and remember forever. It’s the Peter Pan and Wendy in all of us who don’t want to grow up. I think it is what has made America the place of infinite possibilities. Not having an ancient culture makes this country young and playful. The attitude is that you can be and do whatever you want and fancy. There are no regulations that tell you otherwise. In the contrary, the economy booms because of this freedom to go where no one has gone before. I learned English from Mickey Mouse books my Dad gave me in Germany as a child. Mickey Mouse was my hero. He always saved the day, that smart, resilient and intelligent mouse! And of course, the American culture is full of such heroes, like Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Antman and Black Panther- the list keeps growing year by year. That is what the world gets from this innovative country: that even in the face of catastrophe, there is hope. The good guys must face the challenges and figure out a strategy to redirect negative energy. Let’s celebrate the American spirit this summer! The Home of Rockabilly hosts Lee Rocker

One of the most exciting kinds of music is Rockabilly. This bass slapping form of music was born in Modesto back in 1938 by the hillbilly boogie antics of The Maddox Brothers and Rose, broadcasting to the world on KTRB radio. Over the years, Rockabilly influenced the sound of Elvis, Bill Hailey, Eddie Cochran and let to the foundations of rock and roll. Lee Rocker, the bass player for the Stray Cats was the forefront of the big Rockabilly revival in the 80s and it hasn’t stopped since. Rocker will be playing the Gallo Center on June 8. Stray Cat:

Modesto and the roots of Rock and Roll.

ModestoUSA is the birthplace of Rockabilly music, tracing the roots of Rockabilly, originally dubbed “Hillbilly Boogie” and Rock‘n Roll and roll to the clickety-clack-bassslappin’ sounds of Fred Maddox and the Maddox Brothers and Rose in 1938. After WWII, broadcasted live on KTRB, Maddox’s bass playing influenced musicians across the USA, in particular Bill Black, who played bass with a young Elvis Presley. Following the release of That’s All Right Mama in 1954, Rock and Roll was born. In the early years, Elvis would be the opening act for Maddox Brothers and Rose shows. Lee Rocker and his band mates in the Stray Cats lead a huge worldwide Rockabilly revival in the 80s as the chart topping sounds reached a new generation and still runs strong today. Brian Setzer has brought his Rockabilly sounds to Modesto a few times and Lee Rocker played the State Theater. Now in the middle of a Stray Cats reunion tour, Lee comes to the Gallo Center on June 8. Middagh Goodwin connected with Lee to chat about his music and upcoming performance. Before he embarks on this momentous occasion, he will be bringing his band to the Gallo Center on June 8th right amid Graffiti-Summer. Fans of Rock n’ Roll, blues and of course Rockabilly will not want to miss this performance. A Grammy-nominated performer with 14 solo albums, ten albums with the Stray Cats(garnering 23 gold and platinum records worldwide) and two LPs with Phantom, Rocker & Slick(Earl Slick of David Bowie’s band.) Rocker was gracious enough to do a 30-minute phone interview for ModestoView. Lee Rocker and his band will be performing at the Gallo Center for the Arts on Saturday, June 8th. MG-What can we expect with your show here in Modesto when you play the Gallo on June 8th?

LR-Well I will tell you, what I do in concert is, I looked over my career, obviously starting with the Stray Cats, but other bands that I did from Phantom, Rocker & Slick in the 80’s Earl Slick was David Bowie and John Lennon’s guitarist. My years playing with Carl Perkins and Scotty Moore joined my band for a while. What I have done is cherry picked music, that I have been involved with over the last 40 years and put it together into a concert. It is more than just a show in a sense, we have film, and still photos, and I tell stories about being on the road and how things started. A glimpse behind the curtain, kind of a behind the music thing. It is multimedia and stories and of course the concert, but there is so much more than that. I have been doing this the last couple of years in these beautiful theatres and performing arts centres, and it is incredible, something I have worked towards a long time from being on stage, doing radio and on Broadway, I have taken a lot of these experiences in my career and combined them into this one concert.

MG-You have played with just about everyone over the years so I will ask this question now. Our publisher, Chris Murphy’s typical final question. The Beatles or Rolling Stones? I know you have performed with both so that could be a hard one. LR-You are putting me in a tough spot right there. The Stray Cats toured with the Rolling Stones. The Stones were very early supporters of the band, and Keith Richard played on the Phantom, Rocker and Slick record, and I talk about that live in this show. Beatles I have worked with both Harrison and Ringo together and separately so I can’t pick a favorite. MG-I am looking forward to hearing your stories. I am not sure if you know or not, but Modesto is the home of the Maddox Brothers and Rose. Fred Maddox is credited with the “Slap Bass” style that helped define Rockabilly and which you have continued. Who are some of the other influences on you, other than your parents who are musicians?

LR-Yeah both my parents are classical musicians, my dad was in the NY Philharmonic for 61 years, we both got nominated for Grammys the same year, only the second time in the history to happen. As far as influences on my playing, looking at bass players, I would say Willie Dixon is a huge influence, maybe the most. His style of slap bass and also the fact that he was a record producer, a writer a singer and one of the greats. If I picked one that would be it. Other bass players that I love, electric players would be McCartney, I love his melodic turns throughout the low end and interesting clever parts. Then jazz players, Ray Brown, for example, Mingus. I love clever bass playing and interesting ways of looking at things. Graffiti Summer in Modesto USA gets better every year!

There are more fans, more cars, more fun and best of all, more people here in our area and around the world know that ModestoUSA is the Home of American Graffiti, the Home of George Lucas and the Birthplace of Rockabilly Music. Wow. Cool huh? This summer, there are so many things to do and music to hear that will take you to a different place, maybe a night in 1962 when we were all “Draggin’ 10th” listing to KFIV and making song dedications to the DJ sitting in the booth at Burge’s Drive In or up on McHenry at Felix or Al’s Drive In. The Friday night cruise will be back on June 7, the poodle skirts are out and there is a full month of great events that will make you Modesto proud. From the car shows, to the Elvis karaoke, burgers and shakes at Fast Eddy’s and A&W, there is truly something for everyone. Even if you don’t have or want a classic car, you can enjoy the Graffiti spirit at the 2019 GraffitiCon where comics, cars, Star Wars, science fiction and retro fun all collide in a cosmic Modesto explosion for all ages. This month, there will be a classic soundtrack playing on 92.3 The Vine so you can blast your radio all summer long and enjoy some of the best tunes ever made. George Lucas’ American Graffiti was released in 1973 and since then, Modesto USA has been immortalized in one of the top 100 films of all time. There were so many people, cars and experiences that George drew inspiration from and these were all put together for this legendary film. For years, Modesto has been working on a variety of ways to celebrate our classic history, educate the public and draw tourists from around the world. Located on 10th St, the street of the original drag is home base to the Modesto Historic Cruise Route and Walk of Fame founded in 2012. George Lucas built American Graffiti around some of the best songs ever. The music was so important to him, that he spent nearly 10% of the total budget to make the film on music rights. It was the first movie to be built around pop songs as most movies and musicals had songs written for the story. To this day, the songs in the Graffiti soundtrack are some of the best. Graffiti fans will get a big treat this month as there will be some epic concert experiences. The State was the place to be during the cruise, as the late movie would get out and the traffic on J was still running strong. Many a Modesto mover and shaker got their start working at the State. One of my and Becky’s all time fave movie popcorn experiences can be found at the Seattle Cinerama where they offer chocolate covered popcorn and you can get a 50/50 of regular salted and chocolate. Ermegerd. But locally, there is a truly hall of fame popcorn that you need to experience. The State Theatre is far an away the best local movie popcorn. Legendsise of the Cru Steve Pedego

By Chris Murphy If you weren’t there in ’62, the person you want to learn about our American Graffiti history is Steve Pedego, Modesto High 1961. Steve has been keeping the graffiti history flame alive since he finished. Steve and his cross-town rival-Downey high-school sweetheart wife Linda have the most amazing collection of memorabilia, old car club jackets, cheerleader uniforms and so much more. When I started to learn about Modesto’s American Graffiti history, my first stop was Steve’s house. It is a rabbit hole I have fallen into and haven’t gotten out of yet. Not only does he have this knowledge, but he is the chair of the Modesto High Class Reunions as well as the Downey High reunions too. He truly lives and breathes our community culture. By Steve and Linda Pedego I have so many good memories of my years in Modesto from the late 50’s until mid 1963 dragging (the term we used for cruising) on 10th Street, then expanding to the 10th & 11th street and out to Mc Henry Ave. to Al’s Drive In on Mc Henry Avenue and Frances Ave. and in the earlier years we went to Burge’s Drive In on Ninth Street. Modesto High School Students would also meet at Warrens Drive In and the Downey High School Students went to Felix’s Drive In. We were down town dragging every night of the week – it wasn’t just on the weekends. There was only Modesto High and Downey High until 1962. I met my wife, Linda Elliott in 1961 on a blind date. She was Head Song Leader at Downey High School. Linda was a classmate of George Lucas from first grade until 1962 when they graduated from Downey High. Linda’s mother was George’s teacher in second and third grade at John Muir Elementary. Her mother often talked about her memories of George hiding comic books inside his reading book. During my time at Modesto High both Modesto and Downey had Fraternities and Sororities. I belonged to the Regs which started in 1945. There were approximately 11 boys fraternities and at least 4 girls sororities. My love for Modesto High School has kept me involved with my class reunions, The Silver Panthers and the Modesto High School Hall of Fame Committee. I am an avid supporter of Modesto High School. My wife has also kept her love for Downey High School and has been involved with her class reunions and became very active in the Thomas Downey Alumni Association. She was president for several years and was instrumental in putting on the very successful 60th anniversary of Downey High. When her term was over no one wanted to take over so I offered to become President of the Downey Alumni until someone else came forward. During Linda’s term I helped to get the Football Field at Downey named after Chuck Hughes and during my term I helped to get the gym named for Lyle Iverson. I took a lot of ribbing for it. We try to have a annual party of old friends from Modesto and Downey each year. Linda and I have a true love for Modesto and such fond memories of our time growing up here, living the true Graffiti times and now growing old in the same community.

Jerry Sauls

Jerry Sauls has lived in Modesto almost his entire life. He went to Thomas Downey High School (Class of 1960), married his high school sweetheart, Toni Andrade (Class of 1962 and classmate of George Lucas) in 1962. They both cruised 10th/11th Street and McHenry Avenue as far as Al’s Drive In together starting in 1959. Jerry recently “cloned” his 1950 Chevy Coupe that they cruised in 1960. This was the same year that Jerry stated his love of the Tri-Year Chevys. Jerry was raised at the local drag strips of the day like Kingdon, Vernalis and Balico, plus the local street racing. When Jerry was asked about ever having problems with the local law enforcement, he mentioned that the strangest ticket he ever received was from the infamous local police officer Leroy Applequist; the first ticket was for doing 16 m.p.h. on 11th street and then three blocks later, received another one, from the same officer, for doing 26 m.p.h. The other ticket stories can be saved for a later time. His love of cars has never waned. Jerry has been a member of the Modesto Street Rods for 22 years and he has built an elaborate garage for his cars and memorabilia. Jerry and Toni, along with Don and Elaine Harmon, were very instrumental in the very popular “Graffiti Classic @ McHenry Village” car show that continues to run to this day. The couple has (2) sons (Todd and Scott) and (4) grandchildren (Hunter, Ryan, Cameron and Natalie) and both continue to run successful businesses within Modesto today. Bill Terpstra

Immigrating from Holland in the 1956, I’d never been around cars. In fact, I’d only ridden in a car one time before coming to the United States. My life as a car guy basically revolves around one automobile. In 1959 while working for Bibens Landscaping, I found a 1930 Model A Coupe in a barn on the corner of Tully and Kiernan. I paid $50.00 dollars for it. That was the beginning of a love affair that has lasted 60 years, I drove the Model A as a stocker for about a year, then in 1961 I completely disassembled the car and put it in an Oldsmobile V8 with 3 twos and a Chevrolet rear end. With this combination, going to 10th street on Friday night was the highlight of my week. All my friends were there and of course lots of girls. After returning from military service, the Model A went through another rebuild. My wife and I were charter members of the Modesto Area Street Rod Association with our two sons growing up in the rumble seat. In 2009, after a stint of circle track racing, my sons and I decided to resurrect the Model A. I bought a late model race car and used all the components for the new build. It’s my honor to be recognized for my contributions to Modesto car culture.

Bob Piccinini

Bob Piccinini’s passion for cars started at a young age. In high school, he saved up all of the money from his after-school job to purchase his first car. One of his first custom classics was this beautiful metal flake 1950 Mercury, and he was hooked. As the years moved on, Bob created a successful career in the grocery industry, purchasing the family business in 1985, but his passion for cars never waned. As The Save Mart Companies grew from a small operation to a sizeable regional chain in the late 80s and early 90s, so did his classic car classic collection, which included his favorite models from his childhood. With a true love for classic cars and nostalgia for the era he grew up in, Bob was an avid fan of the Modesto American Graffiti Parade. Over the years, Bob was lucky enough to have some of his cars participate in the parade—and even had the chance to drive around Grand Marshall “Wolfman Jack” one year in his ’57 Chevy, fulfilling an ultimate childhood dream. His car collection included another Mercury Custom and a ’58 Impala that he had been trying to find for a long time. In 1991 Bob formed a partnership with Sonoma Raceway for NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Racing. Bob never tired of watching those incredible machines take on the challenge of that difficult road course with the Save Mart banners flying proudly in the background. In 2015 Bob passed away, leaving a legacy of community involvement and passion for racing, still integral to The Save Mart Company’s culture today.

The Road Rebels Car Club

One of Modesto’s classic car clubs, the Road Rebels, started in late 1957 with Modesto High kids at Bundy’s Auto shop on Maze Blvd. listening to the ball games, fights on radio and working on cars. The emblem on the back of the jacket was a 32 Ford pick up owned by Harry Moore. It was fixed up with a polished hardwood bed and a chrome 50 gal beer keg converted to a gas tank. We chopped (raked) the front springs to bring the front bumper to be a beer can high (6 inches) off the ground. That’s how the police would judge our legality. Officer Leroy Applequist would always be on the watch for our guys as we drove around town. Especially on Friday/Saturday nights as we cruised downtown from Burge’s Drive In on “O” and 9th down 10th to the Greyhound Station, over to 11th, then to J then to McHenry and out to Al’s Drive In then back downtown town on McHenry to J and over to Burge’s. We loved hot rods and Gene Winfield would customize them, if we could afford his fees. He was located across from the MJC football field on Tully. He would paint the cars, or Sapulvida and also Furtado’s would paint the cars. Many times we would take the cars to T.J. (Tijuana, Mex) for what was called “Tuck & Roll” upholstery work on the interior. Had to watch though as they would cheat by stuffing the seats with old newspaper instead of cotton. The Road Rebels hung out at Mabel’s Sweet Shop across the street from Modesto High Auditorium during the day and then to Warren’s or Burge’s and hang out in the parking lot having Cokes, fries and hamburgers, being cool, watching the girls come by, comparing who has the coolest, fastest rod in town and then go to Al’s and harass the Downey guys and challenge them to race, or to impress some of their girls. This would drive Officer Applequist and Officer Sturm nuts. Every weekend Friday night, it was to the California Ballroom to dance to Roddy Jackson and the Blue Notes Band from Merced or Kent Whitt and the Downbeats from hometown Modesto. After Kent Whitt, Bob DeLeon, Connie Hightman and Bill Gross would finish, it was time to race rods in the country. Either California Ave to the west to challenge the Modesto High guys or Claribel Ave to the north of town to challenge the Downey High guys. Then to the canals to have a victory party. Founding members were: Harry Moore, Russell Wade, Dale Reynolds, Steve Burris, Bill Barney, Bob Martin, Dave Montgomery, Vince Todero, Dave and Richard Kessler, George Klopf, Don Walen, Larry Smith, Larry Lee, Don Lowe, Jack Robinson, Dave Elliot, Ted Pannell, Terry McGrath, Connie Hightman. Several more joined in later. There are about 31 members still around and 19 who have had their last rod race on earth. As far as current members, I believe the courts and police thought we should disband years ago. Could never understand why. Of those living, Bob Martin, Terry McGrath, Russell Wade, Connie Hightman, Kent Whitt, Steve Burris, Larry Lee, Larry Smith, Dale Reynolds, Jack Robinson, Dave Elliot, Richard Kessler, Don Lowe, Bruce Nelson, Ted Pannell, Jim Weyth, Ivan Weyth, and I know I have not mentioned some of the others. Legends of the Cruise continued...

Dub Kyle

Dub spent his early years growing up Farmersville, CA. He attended elementary and middle school in Farmersville, along with his classmates. Dub soon then transferred to Exeter High School located in Exeter, CA. As a teenager, he and his pals, on a Saturday night, often the traveled 2 1Ž2 hour drive to Modesto to cruise 10th street! His interest in cars and hot rods developed at the early age of four, when he shadowed his father at his auto repair business. This love affair has endured over 78 years! In his early years, Dub has raced motorcycles, cars, vintage, cars, and Jeeps. In 1977, his competitive success in the National Sand Racing Association brought him the prestigious award, “Driver of the Year”. In 1960 Dub and Bonnie moved to Modesto, and later moved to their ranch in Escalon where their 3 sons grew up. After 20 years in the country, they returned to Modesto in 1990, and have resided here till today. Dub became a business owner in Modesto in 1967. The business continues today, it is owned and operated by son Quinn. Kyle’s 4Wheel Drive has been in operation for 52 years. In 1978, Dub began his affair with building street rods starting out with a T-Bucket Roadster. Over the years, he has accumulated many awards with various street rods. Now in his 1946 Mercury convertible, one of his greatest joys is to haul dignitaries and celebrities in Modesto parades, especially if some of them are his good friends.

I was singing before I could walk. My household was made vibrantly alive and musically influential because of my parents. My Father, Alonzo Castillo is a transplant from Corpus Christi, Texas who fell madly in love with a California girl and the California Sound. The Doobie Brothers, Santana, The Eagles and the Queen Of Everything, Linda Ronstadt were the 70’s soundtrack during my upbringing. My Dad said Joe Jones’ hit from 1960, “You Talk Too Much” and Neil Young’s “Cinnamon Girl” from 1969 are songs for me. Thanks, Dad for the gifts of music. BLUES VIEW Interview with Ava Grace Hello everyone. June 15th at the State

There is a lot more happening so please go to the main calendar for details. This month I’ve interviewed Ava Grace Merchant. Ava Grace is a 16-year-old sophomore at Oakdale High. We have recently begun to play together in the group Gravel and Grace. Earl: What is your story? Ava Grace: I play piano and sing, mostly around Modesto either independently or with some talented musicians who devote their life to the craft. I grew up in choir and theater, wanting to be a performer but never having the guts to pursue it outside of school events. I’ve been doing gigs for about a year and it’s made me feel so much more well-rounded and accomplished, as well as giving me an outlet to express my music. E: What is your passion? AG: I want to make people feel something. Regardless of whether I’m the writer of a song I’m performing or if it’s a cover, each song is a story not just of an event but of an entire person’s life and values leading

When you think about it having a pop

culture convention that features a classic car show is a no brainer when you live in Modesto; especially when it takes place in June. Growing up I loved the vehicles in movies, tv shows and comics just as much, sometimes more than the main characters. Who didn’t love the Batmobile, Black Beauty or the Enterprise? Even Han Solo has the Millenium Falcon. All integral parts of the storytelling. Graffiti-Con, where pop culture meets subculture, is taking place Sunday, June 23rd from 10 am - 5 pm at the Modesto Centre Plaza with the car show located on 10th Street along the classic cruise route. The cost to attend is $5 and kids under 12 get in free with a paid adult(a portion of all sales goes to music scholarships). Tickets are available at Invincible and Modesto Comics. We are hoping to double our cars this year and have reserved 10th Street between I and K Street. As with any comic-con, there will be a packed dealers room, with everything from vintage toys and comic books to hot wheels and records. As of writing this article, we have two guests with ties to Star Wars, C Andrew Nelson the actor who has spent

more time in the Darth Vader suit than any other actor and Alan Fernandez who was one of the original Tusken Raiders. There will also be some amazing artists and comic creators including, Mark Bode(Heavy MetalCobalt60//Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)Joseph Weems V(DC/Marvel/Image) who also designs skateboard decks, Robert Love(Popgun/ Image), Michael Aushenker(Bongo/Heavy Metal/Gumby) writer for Rock n Roll Biographies), NY Best Selling Author Landry Q Walker (Marvel/DC/Image). Also joining us will be musician/artists Kepi Ghoulie(Groovie Ghoulies/Haints) and Dominic Davi(Tsunami Bomb). “Despite being a lifelong Californian, I had never got to visit Modesto until March, when I tabled at Latino Comics Expo at Modesto Junior College. The closest town I had visited was Merced. Modesto did not disappoint, the locals I met are terrific and I truly enjoyed discovering the city’s culinary charms... places like Skewers, Churchkey, Posh Bagels and Lulu’s Neighborhood Grill. Modesto has long held a mystique for me,

partly because I’m a big cinephile and I know George Lucas based ‘American Graffiti’ on his teen years here. So, of course, the idea of Graffiti-Con intrigues me. ALL AGES VIEW Happy June! For some of us this means that it is officially summer vacation, and why sit around and wonder what to do when Modesto has so much to offer? Coming up June 7th - June 9th we have The American Graffiti Festival. Cruise on downtown and celebrate one of Modesto’s most well known traditions. The car parade will be on the 7th from 6:30pm-8:30pm and the car show will take place the 8th and 9th. This is the perfect time to dress up, listen to your favorite 60s and 70s hits, and look at some classic cars. Speaking of classic, RAIN - A Tribute to the Beatles, will be performing at our beautiful Gallo Center on June 4th. Also at the Gallo Center will be Annie, on several dates later this month, put on by Modesto

But what I am looking forward to more than anything is the beginning of the annual Concert in the Park. It is held at Graceada park on Thursdays starting June 6th and continuing through July 11th for a total of 6 weeks. You can set up a picnic blanket and socialize with friends, neighbors, and other community members while listening to our very own MoBand play in Mancini Bowl. June is full of so many fun activities to kick off this summer and I hope to see you there!

Go Downtown Modesto: Music in the Plaza

Just a month in and we already had some stellar performances in the 10th Street Plaza and like the weather, the music is going to continue to heat up. Join us every Friday night between 7-9 pm for some of the areas best performers in an all-ages outdoor setting and it is always free. Kicking things off during the Graffiti Cruise(5-7 pm) we have Threshold playing everything from classic rock to funk and soul. If it has a groove and some horns they play it. Continuing the party there will be a Motown tribute set by Third Party, Triple D and Patty Castillo Davis. A Modesto favorite the Rob Hill band will be performing some soulful blues and Americana on the 14th. Brand new to the series is Third Sol, a very soulful Latin funk act out of Ceres if you saw them at Porchfest you know why you should come out and maybe bring your dancing shoes. Closing out the month with some high power rock and roll is Triple D. They are a power trio and always gets the crowd going regardless of where they perform. Come early for a good spot on the patio at Fuzio, Ralston’s Goat or Graffiti Dogs or just bring your lawn chairs and enjoy.

Go Downtown Modesto: PatioFest - Join us for the second annual PatioFest

Not to be confused with Porchfest. On June 15th 6-9 pm the streets of Downtown Modesto will be filled with music coming from the patios from 19 participating restaurants, cafes and bars. You are invited to stroll around Downtown and check out not just the music but also discover a new favorite night spot or place for lunch. With a big horn section and a Latin funk sound, G Street Revolution will be heard in 10th Street Plaza by the patrons on the patios at Ralston’s Goat, Fuzio and Graffiti Dogs and those walking by. Ava Grace & the New Sound will be at Cafe Deva and Koala and the Goldenboy will be across the street at Concetta performing for those on the patio or who stroll by. Sincerely Allison will be singing at Tresetti’s while Remedy acoustic will be stationed at Barkin Dog Grill, Borrowed Time returns to the Fox Pub and MF Silverado will be back at Bayou Grill.
