GREET
Greetings Friends Do you hear that sound?
It is the sound of our community opening up. As the door swings open, we hear the sound of bands, the guitars, the vocals, the leap of a ballerina, the tenor from an opera, the drums from a music garden and the beautiful rhythm of a gentle bossa nova where you’ll be dancing with ‘em too until the night is ovah*. Happy again.
Could it be happening? * *Well maybe. That’s why we put the asterisk on our cover and throughout this magazine. All signs are saying yes, but there is always a chance that we will blow it since Stanislaus County has one of the lower percentages of vaccinated people at 30-40%. Friends, we need to get this going. Trust the experts, the vaccine is safe, effective and when you are fully vaccinated, you can enjoy a mask free existence and hug other vaccinated people and get back to a new normal. See how easy this can be? Let’s not make our re-opening an asterisk event and let’s do this right. Vaccines are available nearly everywhere with no lines. I did it, all my family did it and you can do it too. June 15 is the moment of truth and I hope we can do this. We wrote this entire issue with the hope that this happens and everything has an * by it, just in case. Speaking of fully vaccinated living. I am ready to travel and get back into the

groove. For my 60th birthday, we had a cool retro fun weekend in Frank Sinatra’s former home and the whole family went full rat pack and vintage cocktails for the weekend and even Jamie enjoyed the ghost of Sinatra. It’s good to be on the move again, it is good to be playing music for real people, it is good to be enjoying dinners and fun times with my vaxxed friends and like Frank says, “the best is yet to come”. 60 Plus! Let’s do this. Thank you all for my wonderful birthday greetings and let’s get together soon. So it’s June, and normally this is Graffiti Summer. I’m like a lost kid right now as we should be planning the Legends of the Cruise, the Walk of Fame, the American Graffiti Festival Cruise parade, but that will all have to wait until August. Have no fear, Graffiti Summer will be bigger than ever this August. So this month we are diving head first into our fresh local food and our newly emerging arts scene. The fall arts seasons are being announced and the Farmer’s Market is as fresh as can be. One of my favorite stories is the connection between the Rodin Family and the Gallasso (Shelton) families about how they have connected for decades and reunited at 10th and J. Read about it in Food/Drink view and it will make you smile. Local businesses. Hat’s off to you. It looks like you made it. We made more adjustments, had more plan B’s than can be
imagined and ModestoView has been here through the whole pandemic, cheering you all along the way. I hope we have helped you make it through and you know that ModestoView works hard to champion the great local things. Big shout out to all of the dads out there that make time to be part of their kids lives and be a great role models and also to the moms that are dads also. You are all so very important. Thank you all for reading and for your local cheerleading too. With Gratitude, Chris Murphy Founder and Publisher, ModestoView (*yes, those words are from the song Downtown. You get an A for noticing)

* Open with an Asterisk
As we return to the arts, both inside and out, we celebrate the potential with Eli Lester rocking out with Big Earl and the Crying Shame, Anica Bottom dancing with Juline School of Dance in a photo by Ballet Zeda and Leslie Sandefur singing with Opera Modesto. Behind them looms the Asterisk, that will send us back if we don’t act responsibly and safely open up. We can do it. Thanks to Michael J Mangano for creating our cover illustration and to Pete Grimaldi for putting this amazing group of contents together each month. – Chris

Modesto Annual Graffiti Summer has been moved to August when we can all gather again. But in the meantime, we are ready to build a Graffiti Museum. The Graffiti USA Museum has even been hosting events like the Kiwanis Chicken Dinner Drive Through and the the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Stanislaus Drive Trough dinner. We can even help you host your event as we go into the summer. We have 40,000 sq ft and a great parking lot.
Did you know?
Dozens of Local businesses have donated their valuable labor and supplies to help build the Graffiti USA Museum. Thank you so much to Board Member Ron Pippin of Pippin Investments LLC and the members of the Valley Business Exchange who have been cutting, chopping, welding, digging and so much more to bring this museum to life. Over $400,000 of in-kind services have been provided and this means the world to us.
Here are some of the businesses who have stepped up!
D.A. Wood Construction, C.T. Brayton & Sons, Inc., W.C. Maloney, Inc., Tidwell Enterprises, George Milano Construction, Cal West Concrete Cutting, Nicro Inc., Tony’s Plumbing, GHI- G Hedgecock, Inc., Patch Crew, J.M. Build 10th Street
Inside our museum, we will be creating a newly imagined “10th Street”. You can create or sponsor one of the businesses along the street. For example, my family is putting in a record store, Murphy’s Records, it will be a real record store. We are working with the Modesto Radio Museum to put a radio station inside the museum that will be their museum. There will be a Sanders Appliance Store. You can be a part of this and we want your help to create the magic that will attract people from all over the world.
Help us build it.
If you are a contactor, builder, pipe fitter, welder, carpenter, we need your services. The more things like sprinkler systems, HVAC systems, restrooms and Kitchen construction donated or at least at a reduced cost, the faster we can build this museum for all to enjoy. Thank you so much to the Valley Builders Exchange, many members have been working to build the museum and to date have contributed over $300,000 in in kind services. Are you next?
We really hope that you see our vision and want to be a part of it. Please contact us a info@graffitiusamuseum.com to connect or you can donate at www.graffitiusamuseum.com We are on the corner of Coldwell and Historic 99, aka North 9th St. Let’s do this Modesto and bring the Graffiti USA Museum to life.
We need your donations, you can do it monthly, annually and we have some great donation gifts that will make you feel like the coolest cat in town. We are also talking big donations, like building naming donations. We now have a new recurring monthly donation option to make it easier.

The Get Toasted mimosa brunch bar in downtown Riverbank is the topic du jour due to being in the running for the “Best of 209” awards. (That gives me hope that it will be considered for a MAMA, too!) You might have seen it already, it’s in the shop where Pizza Plus used to be. The shop, owned by husband and wife duo, Jaclyn and Ricky Lininger (with mad props going
to Jaclyn’s mom Maria Ucci for all her amazing dedication and work on the shop too) has had a rough start. It took over 2 years to convert and update the location, just for it to open days before many counties in California, including Stanislaus, were sent back to purple tier, lowering the number of people they could serve from 83 to 40 (20 inside, 20 outside). disheartening is an understatement. They powered through the rough patch, offering outside seating and orders to-go as of this writing. Thankfully Stanislaus is back in the red tier, and they are back to serving their full menu, which is in high demand. You don’t want to miss out on trying this place. The menu changes every season, highlighting what is freshest and tastiest in our area. With over 20 mimosa offerings, like the “Tropical” and the “Caramel Apple” (our fav!), you can’t go wrong and you will want to try them all. The mimosas also come in flights, and they often have themed flights like the recent “Jolly Rancher Flight” and the Valentines “Love Trio”. It’s a fabulous way to try as many as you can handle and find your new favourite-but remember safe driving etiquette. Have a designated driver handy or plan to call an Uber. (Beer and are wine available as well if you are not into mimosas.) They offer many delectable bites and brunch items. The “Topped Toasts” come in assortments like the “BBQ Chicken”, “Gimme S’more” or my favorite the “Lox ‘n Toast”. The Belgian waffles come in flavors like strawberry banana or churro. The notorious “Topped Tots” are a best seller though, so you definitely have to get an order of those. Don’t forget to take some treats home, or bring some to the office to share as a great morale booster. Pick any of the mini-muffins, cheesecakes, and cinnamon rolls. Get Toasted is open for brunch, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, and are open during Riverbank’s Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays from 5 pm to 8 pm. Reservations are suggested, as tables are in high demand-patio tables go especially quick. Don’t spend your date waiting in line. You can also order pick-up if you’d rather stay in your PJs. We’d love to hear what you think! Tag #modestoview in your photos and remember to sip on, friends!

Go StArt StArt (Stanislaus Art) Magazine is a creative treat for families By Linda Knoll
Have you heard about StArt Magazine? It’s a family-friendly, bi-
lingual arts magazine centered on artists and arts organizations in Stanislaus County. It’s part educational, part informational and all fun and creativity for the whole family. Each issue features stories about area artists and art groups that focus on programming for children. There are also loads of hands-on activities, puzzles and projects that cover all the arts from opera to poetry to painting. To see what it’s about, digitally download an issue for free at lindaknollart. com/start-magazine. I founded StArt with the help of designer and artist, Betty Gay. I’m an artist, educator and publisher here in Modesto. I’ve been teaching art in elementary schools for the past eight years through Mistlin Gallery’s CLASS teaching artist program. When schools closed down because of the pandemic last year, I was immediately thinking of ways to take the arts to families in their homes. StArt seemed like a great way to engage kids in activities that didn’t involve screen time. One of the fun ways to interact with the magazine is by contributing art and stories. We publish contributions from kids and grownups: paintings, poems, short fiction, interviews… we’d love to hear from you. The theme for July is creativity and self expression. So, show us how your family expresses themselves through the arts. Email contributions to llknoll@gmail.com, or tag us on Instagram @stanislausartmagazine. We’d love to see the magazine make its way into classrooms, especially in bilingual programs. We have a number of free subscriptions available for classrooms. Contact us if you’d like one to share with students. Buy One/ Give One subscriptions are available which means you can get your copy plus give one to a student in need, or classroom where it will be shared with many. StArt’s first year of production was funded by a KickStarter campaign last October. Generous supporters provided enough to get us through the first year - 4 quarterly issues. Three issues have been printed so far, and a 4th is on its way in July. For the magazine to continue its publishing journey, we are looking for continuing supporters and sponsors. All past issues of StArt are available in Modesto at Mistlin Gallery, or in Turlock at the Carnegie Arts Center. Subscriptions and individual print issues are available at lindaknollart.com Help us keep this arts adventure going by subscribing today!

IN MEMORIAM
Marie Gallo
It was so sad to learn of the passing of my friend Marie Gallo. She was the optimists’ optimist and always made everything she did better. Marie thought big, dreamed big and acted big to fundamentally change our community for the better. She was a champion of the arts, friendships, and truly had a talent for finding ways to bring out the best and understand the people she knew. One of the wonderful and fun moments was when she celebrated her friend Grace Lieberman at the MAMA Awards with a huge presentation of Everything’s Coming Up Roses with a LOT of roses. Marie would be then be honored for her own lifetime achievement at our 2008 MAMA Awards. Marie has been honored by many for her accomplish-

ments and the way she encouraged others to join in and make things happen. She was determined to make things happen and she really understood the people she worked with and saw the greater good in so many things. I really learned a lot from her. I was truly fascinated with her earlier years as a concert pianist and her talent for music was amazing and I treasured a few moments playing her beautiful piano at her house one afternoon. She truly lived for the arts. Our community is truly lucky for all she did, for the family that she and Bob raised and the legacy she leaves for us all to keep alive. I and our arts community and the city at large will miss her. Donations can be made in her honor to the Gallo Center for the Arts www.galloarts.org

W E I V & Drink D FOO A Tale of Two Families...
If you are a regular reader of ModestoView, you know that interesting cocktails and fresh food are some of my passions. This month we get to combine the two with an amazing story of two next-door downtown businesses that begins in 1918 with the tale of two Italian families. In 1918, Augustino Gallasso bought a farmland off of St. Francis Avenue north of Modesto to grow wine grapes. In 1937 in San Francisco, Ante and Florence opened Original Joe’s in San Francisco on Taylor Street, one of the most legendary and iconic restaurants. In 1941, Anté (Tony) purchased farmland off of Claribel Road that was farmed by his family where they grew peaches, wine grapes and other varieties. In 1942 a young Silvio Gallasso was discharged from the Army at 18 as the last male to take care of his family and returned to run the family farm, growing peaches and other fruit. Later, his daughter Sandy would marry Carl Shelton. The Italian farmers of those days stuck together, helping each other out and making sure that they were all successful. This in itself is a whole other story. In 1970 Anthony Rodin at age 21 moved to Modesto to operate the family farms that would today make Rodin one of Modesto’s most popular farming families. The Rodin family and the Gallasso family would farm as neighbors to this day and Original Joe’s is still owned and operated by the Rodin/Duggan family in San Francisco and it is still as amazing as ever. Now this is where this already small world gets smaller. We now reconnect with grandchildren

Marie Rodin and Mike Shelton. Oddly enough they never really knew each other growing up in those big families, Mike living in San Francisco operating bars in the city and Marie with the Rodin Farms operation. On December 2, December 2014, Marie Rodin made a bold step to open a family Farmers Market in downtown Modesto at the corner of 10th and J serving the freshest fruit and many of the products of her family friend farms. Marie’s mom Frances is a frequent smiling face in the market. On December 2, December 2015, Mike Shelton returned to Modesto and opened Ralston’s Goat, literally across the street from Rodin Market. When he arrived, he met his neighbor Marie and soon realized that they had a family connection, there parents all being friends and the whole history reconnected again. Call it business kismet, but this was an amazing coincidence that has lead to a great partnership of support, teamwork and above all, friendship. One of my all time favorite local food hacks was to stop by Marie’s shop, get the fresh juices or during Graffiti Summer, fresh Cherry Cola. I would then hope across the street to the Ralston’s Goat, where they would spike it for me with a delicious dark rum. Now everyone can

Silvio and Corrine Gallasso Mike’s Grandparents enjoy this formerly secret hack Marie is making the tastiest fresh seasonal juices that they now supply to Ralston’s Goat daily. These are truly the freshest and tastiest cocktails you can get with an amazing Watermelon Vodka, a Pineapple Rum and a Mixed Berry Tequila all served with fresh fruit. These need to be 100% on your immediate try list. As a Tiki guy, I am totally partial to the Pineapple with an extra floater of dark rum on top. At Rodin Market, you can get the tasty grilled chicken prepared daily by Ralston’s Goat on Marie’s popular salads as an add on. Her most popular salads that have earned a big following in town are the Rodin House, Southwestern and the Mandarin salads. Each of these are prepared fresh with special daily dressings and can also be paired up with her signature fruit parfaits and yogurts. You can also find up to ten different juices as the seasons permit.
Marie’s lemonades are very popular and go great with a Ralston’s shot of Vodka. (just saying) Needless to say, the corner of 10th and J is home to a great family story and some of the freshest food in town. Modesto’s owners and operators of our local restaurants and markets are what make our community special. It is why we need to make sure that we support our local and independent businesses. This is where we get our character and these are the people that are supporting our local families and supporting each other’s business. So let’s be fresh Modesto. Let’s eat local. And let’s support the great local family businesses that make our community special. Here’s another coincidence, even their street numbers are the same. Please go visit and enjoy these great local and tasty and home grown local businesses.

Roy Stevens, Opera Modesto As a musician, I so dearly miss the feeling of playing to people, making people want to dance, sing along and enjoy themselves. This is what makes the arts so exciting. The possibility of opening back up this month is truly magical and be one of the catalysts that brings back that “normal” feeling. But like the giant asterisk * on the cover, it is up to us to make it happen. We need to stay smart, be safe, watch out for each other and make sure we protect ourselves so we don’t bounce back into the pandemic. As a musician and follower of the arts, we are all hopeful that this opportunity brings out the best in people so this is possible. We caught up with some of our local professionals that have been navigating this difficult time, and have been very creative and are ready, along with us to open up. So let’s do this right friends and help these people open up. Let’s catch up with Roy Stevens of Opera Modesto, Caroline Nickel of the Modesto Symphony and Lynn Dickerson of the Gallo Center for the Arts. ModestoView: Is there something you learned about how the arts can survive during COVID? Roy Stevens: The COVID crisis demonstrated how so many of us are able to pivot and solve new problems as they arrive. It was a difficult and challenging year for everyone in the arts, but many of us also were able to do amazing new projects that in a normal year would not be possible. For us, the arts are not just back, but they never went away, they just changed format. Opera Modesto is in the midst of our FESTIVAL @ HOME, 8 months of on demand streaming content that includes three operas, two youth concerts and three brand new pro concerts filmed live (no audience) in the Foster Theater at GCA with 6+ camera angles.
12
The most remarkable thing of all was that Opera Modesto, not being able to perform in theaters, made a movie. Not just a movie, but one that has (so far) won about 70 awards in international film festivals around the world. THE RACE is a world premiere youth opera commissioned in 2018. It is a mash up of five famous Aesop’s Fables: The Tortoise and the Hare, The Bear and the Bees, The Hares and the Frogs, The Fox and the Grapes, and The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing that is amazingly delightful, enjoyed by all ages. Since we couldn’t perform The Race live in 2020 as planned, we made a movie, shot on location in magical settings of west Modesto orchards, fields, vineyards and by the Tuolumne River with RED cameras, drones and starring 19 wonderful and diverse youth artists, ages 11-19, from the central valley THE RACE will have two public showings at The State Theatre on June 30, 4:00 and 7:00 PM, $7 tickets, and will include a Behind the Scenes/Making of a Movie in the Pandemic feature following the main feature This month, we filmed OPERA IN THE HEIGHTS, which features Aerial Trapeze performances by Nikola Printz, a truly amazing opera singer. Filming Nikola from above, below and angles all around the theater will be incredible. Also exciting is our “Story Into Song Literacy Initiative” opera for the year. We will be working with local school districts, as well as international schools, through the State Department, homeschoolers, Learning Quest, etc. In fact, I would like to invite any teachers, homeschool parents, district administrators to contact me if they would like to make use of THE RACE in the future. Also people that know teachers and administrators locally and elsewhere, including internationally, should put me in

touch with them. Our SOI, Summer Opera Institute will take place, hopefully in person during July. MV: Anything you want people to know about Opera Modesto.? RS: Opera Modesto continues to be excited to partner and collaborate with many organizations in the area, especially those interested in literacy and ESL. We will again be inviting teens to the final dress rehearsals of our main stage operas, and we will have “Free to Readers” performances of the bilingual double bill in January. I would like to invite potential collaborators and partners for the Literacy Initiative, and for THE RACE, to be in touch with me: rstevens@ operamodesto.org Opera is just storytelling, dramatized on stage, often with some of the greatest music ever composed and featuring great voices. Opera Modesto believes in making opera accessible and enjoyable to all who have the courage to give it a try! Like many performing groups, the Modesto Symphony learned how to go virtual and with a group as large as the symphony, it is a little more complicated, but they did it, but the magic of the symphony is to truly see it in person, something that Caroline Nickel, is excited to present along with the Symphony creative team.
Caroline Nickel, Modesto Symphony ModestoView: What is something you learned about how the arts survive during COVID? Caroline Nickel: This pandemic taught us all the importance of human connection. The arts have always played a significant role in bringing people together and enriching communities. This was became more clear after a year with a pandemic that kept us all out of the concert hall, yet we still managed to remain creative and found other ways to offer music to our community – and our community responded. The arts survived—the MSO survived—during the pandemic the same way we did before, because of the value we bring and the support of our community. It’s that connection and support that will keep us thriving for years to come. While we missed performing in-person, we never lost our connection to the community and we are so grateful for that.

MV: Now that the door appears to be opening, how are you planning and how have your plans changed? CN: We are definitely looking forward to performing in-person again! There will be some changes this year to ensure that our musicians, audiences, and staff all stay safe, but being able to take the stage again and connect with the community in-person will make everything worthwhile. MV: What will your new season include and when will it start? CN: We’re really excited to share 2021-22 season and we’ll make a full announcement soon! The community will get the chance to meet our Music Director finalists and see them each conduct one of our Classics concerts and both Holiday Pops and our Holiday Candlelight Concert are scheduled to return this December! Plus, we’re going to have a really thrilling movie concert that we can hardly wait to announce! MV: Anything you want people to know about Modesto Symphony? CN: We cannot thank our supporters enough for helping us through this pandemic. With their support we were able to produce a full concert, recital, or video series once a month that was made completely free to everyone. These free offerings made classical music more accessible and we hope we can continue to reaching new people when we return to the stage. The Gallo Center, one of our brightest lights, has survived the darkness and is now planning a return to the stage. We grabbed a moment with Lynn Dickerson, as she prepares to transition to new CEO, Chad Hilligus after over a decade of smart, friendly and professional management of the Gallo Center. ModestoView: What is something you learned about how the arts survive during COVID? Lynn Dickerson: I was reminded that there is no substitution for live entertainment. The streaming thing never caught on. And I hear from people daily who tell me how they can’t wait for the Gallo Center to reopen and how much they miss GCA shows. Our town isn’t the same without the Gallo Center being open. MV: Now that the door appears to be opening, how are you planning differently? LD: Obviously there are still a lot of unknowns in terms of how readily patrons will return. Unfortunately for the Gallo Center, social distancing in the theaters isn’t an option. For us to be operational, we will have to seat the full house to

make things work financially. Governor Newsom’s news about fully re-opening on June 15 is music to our ears, no pun intended. We are taking as many safety precautions as feasible with air ventilation, hand sanitizer stations, plexi-glass shields, deep cleaning between shows, etc. MV: How have your new season plans changed? LD: We will be launching the 2021-22 season, with 130 shows, in just a few weeks. 90% of those shows were already booked for the 20-21 season that never came to be, so most of the shows have been postponed at least once. Some of the shows are on their 4th or 5th rescheduled date. It’s a great season with lots of variety. Some old favorites and some new shows & artists who have never played the Gallo Center before. I’m biased but I think it might be our best season yet. MV: Anything new want people to know about the Gallo Center they may not know? LD: Just that the Gallo Center is as ready to see our patrons as they are to see a show. It’s been way too long. My personal prediction is that this season will be a little like opening for the first time in 2007 – lots of excitement and interest. Absence makes the heart grow fonder and I believe our loyal patrons will be very excited to return to the Gallo Center. www.modestosymphony.org www.operamodesto.org www.gallocenter.org Subscribe to our You Tube channel at: youtube.com/modestoview

The
The sun appears to be coming out. The door seems to be opening. Ever since March last year, we have all been a bit lost. Almost instantly, a whole industry disappeared. There are millions that are in the performing arts, and not just the performers, but the sound people, event planners, the set designers and so much more. We got creative. We learned a lot. Now, this industry can emerge, different, but the world audience is ready. People are desperate for live entertainment and real connections again. It is time to gather and celebrate together again. But here we pause. If you noticed the * asterisk on the cover, this is a cautionary note. So far we have many green lights, but we can just as easily blow it. Stanislaus County is below the average for vaccinated population and we can slide backwards if we aren’t careful. The new mask free guidelines are for Fully Vaccinated people. If you aren’t or won’t get vaxxed, you owe it to your friends, family and co-workers to keep them safe by continue to wear masks. So let’s do this right and take the asterisk away and lets beat this. Let’s bring the performers back to the stages, let’s rock and roll together and let’s do it right. I am really excited for the potential for the arts. During COVID, we heard compilations and new duets and musical experimentation. There are crossgenre creations and new sounds that may have not happened during a normal season. Just think what the post pandemic sounds are going to be monthly like. People are used to something different but whatever it is, it has to be real and the 2021 and 2022 mash ups will be truly unique. But there are also some traditions that people are eager to return.

Mancini Bowl
was built by MoBand
Have you ever wondered where Mancini Bowl came from? It is named for the guy that pretty much built it, Frank Mancini (ManCHEEni). Mancini Bowl is one of Modesto’s most iconic locations. How many cities have a cool bandstand that aren’t in the Gilmore Girls? Mancini Bowl has been home to many an epic Modesto experience, from the early MoBand concerts, to ModStock, Juline’s School of Dance, Night at the Bowl, graduations, Earth Days and so much more. In the late 40s, Proof Mancini personally installed many of the seats, helped out by the MoBand Moms that would assist with fundraising and support. There are so many people that have helped make it possible for MoBand to present Concerts in the Park over the years and the great partnership with the City of Modesto for the great moments in Modesto’s central park.
Please consider a donation to MoBand at www.moband.org and we will see you at the concerts.

MAMA Records: timmi-kat Turns 30
By Middagh Goodwin
I first remember meeting Moon Trent and David Cole the owner/operators of timmi-kat ReCoRDs(who recently celebrated their 30th Anniversary as a couple in April), after Modesto Organization of Bands was formed, Originally I had several band members over to my apartment to discuss the discourse in local music and how we can come together to make things better, one of them being Paul Line who performed in the synthpop duo Pale with Moon Trent. Another meeting was set up at David and Moon’s house that I was unable to attend and the group decided to call the loose organization of local musicians M.O.B.(I had suggested M.O.M.) Over the next year or so 4 concerts were held 2 in Cole and Trent’s backyard and 2 more at MJC co-sponsored by the Rainbow Coalition. About this same time timmi-kat came to life. The first releases by timmi-kat were cassette for Pale, Pale, Live Homemade released in 1991 and Foghorn, Leghorn and Seven Dwarves Ago in 1992. In 1995 they released the San Francisco indie rock band Spackle(which featured an all Modesto lineup Ian Swanke, Andy Lund, Billy Dyer and Matt Ashleigh) S/T debut CD. In 1998 the label released Milkshake(A CD to Benefit the Havey Milk Foundation.) Also
released on the label was the Trent fronted band Brown Star A Bee’s Dream 7” 1998 and Due Damage CD 1999. Kat-Vox: Celebrating 20 Years of timmi-kat was released in 2011 and featured Jason Lytle, Phranc, The Slow Poisoner, Femme Botz, Pansy Division, Judybats and more. Add to this Moon Trent’s solo discography of at least 6 more releases on vinyl and CD including the “Hard Candy Christmas: 12” single and most recently the digital release of Duet with the Devil by Tractor Boy Chris Ward and the label has well over 20 releases to its name. Most of the label’s catalog is available on Apple, Amazon and Youtube. Trent stated that timmi-kat has taken LGBTQ musicians seriously and published their music where others may have not. It has been an important aspect of the label since the beginning. Moon Trent said there will be a twentiethanniversary remix of “Hard Candy Christmas” and he and his producer were hoping to have it released as a limited green vinyl but do to the pandemic doesn’t think that will happen but the song will be available for digital download. Also coming soon from timmi-kat is a Spanish language live ep by William Morin originally recorded in San Francisco in 2001 and never released. You can check out Morin other release De Los Dos also on timmi-kat. Cole and Trent are working on a virtual 30th Anniversary Celebration and hope to have an in person event scheduled for the Fall when things open up more and people are able to comfortably travel. OLD SOULS

Marty O’Reilly What’s the coolest band name you’ve ever seen? Mine might just belong to the posse of players that songwriter Marty O’Reilly has backing him, because it combines two of the things I appreciate most. The musical highlight of my June is happening on Thursday the 10th, in a cozy space at Oakdale’s Dying Breed Brewing, featuring roots quartet Marty O’Reilly & The Old Soul Orchestra. The band is defined by cinematic songcraft, impressionistic lyrics, clever arrangements, telepathic ensemble interplay, and soulfully world-weary vocals. Look up their live Youtube video of ‘Cold Canary Gaslight’ and prepare to be won over. Tickets for this 7:00 pm show run $15-$20; get more info at www.dyingbreedbrewing. com. This is the caliber of concert you don’t ignore if you’re a serious Americana music enthusiast. I’ll be taking up a table with a few of my clan, so come say hello. As someone who knows what it means to miss New Orleans, I harbor a special fondness for our resident Cajun party band The BluesBox Bayou Band. I always make a point to request their original ‘Vive Louisianne’ when I catch them onstage – another song you ought to Youtube if you haven’t yet had the satisfaction. They are back in action for a special Zydeco brunch in the plaza at Ralston’s Goat, Sunday 6/6 from 11 am-2 pm. Enjoy some accordion with your appetizers, courtesy of MV art director Peter Grimaldi and his bandmates. My own series at the Dragonfly Art For Life has some new and returning treats this month for those seeking out ear candy.
Friday evenings from 7:30-9:00 throughout this summer, I’ll be hosting a spread of our area’s fresh young songwriters and musical theatre talent. June 11, hear Charlize Elizabeth, frontwoman for Valley Talent Project-winning youth rock band Esoteric who recently completed their debut album. Charlize has been developing her solo acoustic original songwriting craft and was my most recent sponsored artist to attend the Yosemite Songwriting Retreat. June 18, True South will be back in the gallery for another stripped-down acoustic set. They’ve been rocking restaurants and festivals all around the valley, led by veteran Nashville songwriter David Finley, and are becoming quite the popular party band. June 25, we have Aschlyn Ahrens and friends. Aschlyn’s interest in music & theatre consumes most of her life; she is currently on the Downey H.S. dance production team and sings in two bands, as well as having experience with choir, VMI, and the Broadway Dreams showcase last year at the Gallo Center, all of which have helped steer her toward her first Modesto Unplugged starring show. $5 cash admission for these cozy and colorful evenings. Find the gallery at 1210 J St. right next to the alleyway. Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. MODESTO UNPLUGGED. www. modestounplugged.com.
Go Modesto Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19 and commemorates the liberation of the last slaves in Texas, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had abolished slavery in 1862. While not yet recognized as a federal holiday, many states do observe the date with local celebrations including parties, parades, picnics and festivals. This year’s Juneteenth Celebration hosted by King-Kennedy Board of Directors will take place on Saturday, June 19th at MLK Park, 601 Martin Luther King Dr, Modesto 11 am-5 pm. Free community event with, community resources, vendor booths, food and much more. There will be live performances by Michael Mitchell and Band, Oso Cold, Queen D, Modesto Supremes and more talent to be announced. NAACP will recognize black graduates in a special ceremony with each grad walking the stage and receiving a special certificate. POET VIEW Shine - Juneteenth Poem
Sam Pierstorff @NinjaPoet ModestoView Poet Laureate
“Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.” –Martin Luther King Jr. Some poems don’t want to be mysterious. They want to be clear. They want to be so transparent you can see that the poem has nothing to hide. People are like this too, my favorite kind of people, people so translucent that the light inside their bodies comes through in every word, in every deed, in every fist bump or high five. We can see past their sunglasses, past their suits, past their skin, their scars, their muddy boots-past the sore cage inside their chest that protects their heart from all the beatings it has felt over the years.
Charlize Elizabeth
This is the problem with carrying too much light. People will want to burn you out. Every day it feels like a riot inside our chests. Sometimes it’s too much to hold onto. Sometimes we burst.
BluesBox Bayou Band
This world is spinning too slowly for some. Too quickly for others. And the rest of us are just trying to hold on. Trying to pay rent. Trying to give to our children what we could never get. And that, that is where we shine the light—where our hearts align, where we build a city that uses kindness as its currency and paves the roads with equality. And I know some people will think that’s a silly idea, but look at all these potholes we got now. The streets are broken. So no one is getting anywherealone. Common ground is a very bumpy road, but if we travel together, if we unpack our biases and pack liquor-size bottles of love, and everyone promises to bring their own light then even in the darkness we will find our way.

SONG WRITER VIEW
19 is a fool’s errand. Not wearing a mask is a fool’s behavior demonstrated by this country’s previous administration which put us in this predicament of mistrust, misinformation and remaining in the Red Tier indicating that we have a consistent substantial spread of the virus in our county. We have been seduced into thinking that California will be reopening 100%, with no masks required for those fully vaccinated on the honor system by June 15th. In the words of Jeff Goldblum’s character, Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park they “were so preoccupied with whether or not you COULD, they didn’t stop to think if they should? If the last year has taught us anything it’s that relying on people in this county to follow safety guidelines in the best interest of others’ health-especially the most vulnerable is a deplorable reality. There is no unsubstantiated judgement behind this, the infection rate, business closures and death toll lend the firm facts. At the risk of sounding like a baby, ”Can you PLEASE wear a mask and follow the recommended guidelines? I’d like to get a paycheck?!” The longer the consorting and cavorting and self-serving behavior continue- We Will Be Closed due to surges or worse, our

friends and family will continue to die. Obstinate behavior is nothing to boast, it’s not patriotic nor is it fostering this community. Not participating in slowing the spread is contemptible. We all need to be all in. Until a safe return to live indoor music is possible the wonderful trend created by those She Bosses behind PorchFest and CouchFest has breathed life into neighborhood community concerts. In the Wycliffe Estates Neighborhood in Modesto, the Gathering of the Vibes will host a concert at 3318 Wycliffe Drive with special guests Tasha Wilson and Lisette Sims. Downbeat is 6 pm. Free all ages, bring your chair and tailgate gear. You never know who you will meet, this is where I heard the news that the folks at lo-fi cocktail lounge have been busy making preparations for a grand reopening in the near future. We can’t wait for that day. On Sunday, June 6, Turlock Hydroponics at 2370 N Walnut will have live music and vendors starting at 10 am. If you do not let us know about your events we cannot pass on the news to our thousands of readers. Please, help us help you. AUTHOR VIEW Soccer is Everything and more By Tasha Wilson As one of the first nurse practitioners in Stanislaus County since 1977, author, Kathleen Leatherbarrow has lived an exciting life. Even as a mother of five, she attended the UC Davis Nurse Practitioner Program, and is still working part-time at our county Opiate Addiction Clinic. Clearly, she is no stranger to hard work. However, along with her hard work, comes a deep love and compassion for others. Her love for others reaches outside of the United States and extends into Africa. There, her brother started an orphanage in Malawi. Through the years, Kathleen’s love for others has also led her to volunteer at some of the clinics in Mexico. Her time spent there inspired her to write the following children’s books: Soccer Is Everything and Her Soccer Story. Kathleen and her husband coached the first coed soccer teams here in Modesto and they believe strongly that sports are a necessity for both the mind and body. Even more so, she believes that when it comes to children and their wellbeing, sports are of the utmost importance. Kathleen wrote Soccer Is Everything, after pondering deeply about the fact that most American children have all the amenities they need if there should ever come a time when they would like to play a sport. Here in the United States, it is easy for kids to find the needed equipment, a place to play, and plenty of support within our community. Unfortunately, the luxuries we receive here, are not as easy to come by in other countries. “I watched the children kicking balls made of rags and scraps with determination and bare feet,” she said. In front of Kathleen’s home sits a free library. You know, the ones you see around town lately? They look like little houses
filled with books inside, and they are so cute. The one in front of her home is there in honor of the daughter her family lost. The little house of books allows the family to continue sharing their daughter’s love by giving back to our community, (even though she is gone). The free library has been there since March and so far, it remains active. I asked Kathleen if she had any advice for those interested in having a book published? She replied, “Amazon has great instruction for self-publishing. YouTube has good instructions also. There are so many books on Amazon that promotion can be as difficult, if not more difficult, than the writing. My best advice: Write, if it gives you joy. Stop, if it is a burden. Life is short and writing should bring you pleasure, whether read or not!” Finally, when I asked our signature question, “Beatles or Rolling Stones?” Kathleen said, “The Beatles for sure. They sound good on my Ukulele.” If you would like to order a few books from Kathleen Leatherbarrow, you can find them on Amazon via her first and last name, or the following link: https://www. amazon.com/s?k=kathleen+leatherbarro w&i=instant-video&ref=nb_sb_noss
I heard a rumors things will be opening on June 15th, I think the cat is out of the bag already. The smile is returning to our faces and here comes the sun…It’s all right! Our numbers are down for the virus and more people are doing the right thing, getting their Soul Vaccination across the nation! Well, folks let us get back to the business of living and getting on with our lives. This is the time to reach out and take care of each other because 2020 was a tough year: extreme heat, California on fire, Covid. I was getting ready for a tsunami and space aliens and the foretold final days but I think we dodged the bullet this time around. We are trying to do more live events outside with social distancing to keep people safer and inside shows with smaller capacity at different venues. The monthly Blues Crawl returns Sunday, June 27th with Eric Benson and Big Earl Mathews promoting this event. The headliner for June is The Ray Charles Project at Café Urbano with an all-star band: Dave Mathews & Tony Lindsey / Santana, DeWayne Pate / Robin Ford, the mightly Chris Cain on guitar and vocals, Glen Walters vocals and Dezson Clayborn on Drums. This band plays the music of Ray Charles on steroids, outside show: 25 dollar cover charge.

FIT VIEW
During my jogs I found myself being able to take the time to say hello to my neighbors as we passed each other on the sidewalk. I was also able to appreciate the birds and the bees as well as beautiful green leaves as they swayed in the trees. Wow! I also noticed that I was really starting to enjoy my runs a great deal more. Jogging forced me to slow down and in turn, it helped me to recognize so much of God’s beauty that is around us. In fact, I was enjoying it so much that I switched up my route to be able to jog more in my neighborhood. It was not long after that I found myself rediscovering my neighborhood and my neighbors who lived around me. I still do speed training but I’m finding it very enjoyable when I just jog out my runs. Today I really look forward to my jogs and not so much on the fitness aspect, but more so the beauty of my surroundings. I always come across the same neighbors and their children playing as well as their cats as they lounge in the morning sunshine on the driveways. It’s really quite healthy for me, spiritually and mentally. So if you’re thinking about starting to run again or even if you are an advent runner I’d invite you to slow down. It’s no secret that we all live our lives at warp speed, that’s just life. But slowing down when we don’t always have to speed through life in my opinion is another way in practicing a healthy lifestyle.
Rediscover The Joy Of Running By Efren Martinez
It was March of 2020 and the reality that all races were going to be put on hold for the immediate future. Little did I know that the immediate future would be for two years. I actually thought that by May of 2020 the shelter in place would have been lifted and everyone’s daily life would have resumed. Perhaps it was wishful thinking overly optimistic. During the pandemic, I, like many others, continued with a healthy lifestyle and fitness. I personally didn’t beak my workout routines that would include speed training. I wanted to be ready for the next race/triathlon as soon as one became available. As months and months went by in this global pandemic I never gave up hope thinking my next race was just around the corner. Fall came as well as the reality that the 2020 racing year was not going to happen. By this time I had been putting in countless hours of speed training. Sure we all got faster but for what? With no races or Triathlons in sight until perhaps 2022 I decided to rethink my running workouts. Go figure I actually came up with an inspirational idea during one of my long runs. Why am I working so much on my speed? It was time to substitute it with jogging. I’m still running, just not at the speed of light all the time. This proved to be one of the best fitness decisions I could have made. What an enlightenment! Turns out that while I was totally focusing on speed I was missing out on so much that was around me. When I’m training for speed I go into tunnel vision mode only focusing on the finish line. It’s like going warp speed and not being able to notice the stars around you. Soon after on one of my jogging days I was able to really notice what I was missing, the stars all around me. These stars I’m referring to would be the people around me as well as the beauty of my environment.

Hello Lovely Summer!
Happy June Modesto!
By Monica Barber
Welcome to Summer! It’s that lovely time of year where an ice-cold lemonade sounds heavenly as the temperatures make their way toward the 90s and today Ms M is sipping a pink lemonade she picked up from the Queen Bean. As she sips slowly she ponders how wonderful it is to have made it halfway through the year. Also, she thinks it’s time to get out to have some fun now that things are re-opening. If you are ready to get out and experience what Modesto has to offer again, there is a lot to do that will keep your budget in line. Indoor movies are back just in time for summer! Regal cinema offers a weekly family favorite feature movies for $1 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays all summer long as a part of their Summer Movie Express. Both movies will be shown on both days. The Smurfs: Lost Village and A Dog’s Way Home will be playing on June 1st and 2nd. COVID-19 protocols will be posted at the theater. 3969 McHenry Blvd. Modesto, CA 95356. The full summer schedule can be found here: regmovies.com/static/en/ us/promotions/summer-movie-express Get out and have some laughs with friends, Cheroot Comedy Night is back on June 10th where Anthony K welcomes some of the funniest comedians in the nation. The evening is 21+ and features a full bar in one of the local areas renowned
cigar bars. Arrive early for the best seats and time to grab a cocktail. Tickets are $20 and the show starts at 8 p.m. Info: https:// fb.me/e/TWW2U0hL 915 10th Street, Modesto, CA 95354. 209-492-9141 Live music is back and it’s been away too long. Deva Café while under new management, still hosts great music, great cuisine and a great time. On June 12th, local music act Kendra and the Bunnies will be playing with a $7 entry fee at Deva Café. This is a wonderful change of pace and a chance for anyone to step out for the evening. The City of Modesto Parks and Rec department hosts a number of outdoor splash grounds throughout the city in neighborhood parks that are open all summer through Labor Day. They are free for use and available for families and kids from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.daily. Info: https:// www.modestogov.com/543/SplashGrounds

It is hard to believe the year is already halfway done, however, I am looking forward to all of the exciting activities that this weather allows for. Recently, I have been taking up as many volunteer opportunities as possible. One of these included helping a local Eagle Scout troop plant trees along the Virginia Corridor and add reflectors to bollards to prevent cycling accidents. As a Girl Scout, I thoroughly enjoyed helping my fellow scouts improve our community. With this being said, I encourage you to reach out to friends and family who may also be involved in scouts and offer

By Sofia Johnson to support one of their projects. Another volunteer event that I love is the monthly Operation 9-2-99 which is a river clean up along the Tuolumne River that will be next held on June 12th. Interested in being both environmentally conscious and economical this month? Well, it’s garage sale season! While on your weekend drives, look out for those neon signs with big arrows. If you’re lucky, you may even stumble across a block sale. The sales usually occur on Saturday morning and you can find all sorts of treasures, whether you’re looking for unique decorative pieces or practical items at a discount this is a fun environmentally conscious way to shop. This is also the time of the week that you find kids selling lemonade. I like to keep gold dollar coins in my car just for this occasion. We have a rule in our house that we support any kids selling items on a card table in front of their house. I hope you can support these young entrepreneurs too. Once again, another exciting month is ahead of us. Don’t forget to have fun, stay active, and stay safe Modesto!
Read Local
Stella Bertalis former Modesto poet laureate with the heart of a punk, and the soul of an outlaw is the author of Alkali Sink(2015) and has recently published her second book of poetry, DUST BOWL VENUS out on Sixteen Rivers Press. The 80-page tome is framed by the lyrics of Modesto based country/gospel songwriter Hazel Houser(read more on Hazel Houser here www.modestoview.com/hazel-houser-spencerwoman-of-history/.) Bertalis captures the landscape and heartfelt emotion of California Heartland with thought-provoking almost lyrical pieces. From the dirt to the harvest bounty to the dirt the passages look at life, love and death. Dust Bowl Venus is a compelling collection of poetry. There is a tenderness to the writing, not unlike Bertalis previous works, that pulls the reader in and will have you coming back time and again. The book is available from Sixteen Rivers Press sixteenrivers.org for $16 and also from Amazon.

ZEN VIEW To Plan or Not to Plan
By Mary Layton
To plan or not to plan, that is the question! I actually have learned not to plan too much these days. Things have changed back and forth quite a bit. Who knows whether whatever is happening this week may not change again in the next few weeks? So I find myself living more moment to moment - which actually feels really good and relaxing. After months of enduring so many closures and restrictions due to the Corona Virus we now are seeing many businesses reopening now. It’s a great feeling of life returning to normal. Hope seems to be on the horizon. However, uncertainty still is lurking beneath the surface. Maybe much of life was always unpredictable and unknowable. But now it’s official, we have learned to be prepared for sudden changes. So many things are in flux, transforming, disappearing or being invented. We live in interesting times. I think that despite great losses we can still regain our balance. We now have had a rare chance to reflect on how we want
to live, what our priorities are. We can redefine oneself, and start over, do things differently and better, we have become modern, having the option between zooming and person in person meetings. Will there be sacrifices? Probably. We now have to consider and respect other people’ s sense of safety if we want to function as a group. It will take patience and the willingness to keep an open mind, to communicate and to trust and have faith that things will work out. Since it is still not very easy to make traveling plans the only thing I know I can plan is to spend more time in nature. To reach out to loved ones and old friends. To get involved in fun activities like art and music. I can learn something new. I can get a sense of belonging and purpose from being involved in the community and doing volunteer work. I think in this new world we have to be mentally, as well as physically flexible, we must think out of the box and when we run into impasses find a new path, give the untried a shot, be creative. There’s so much to learn nowadays. Being more conscious of the things we don’t know yet or have no answers for is humbling. Instead of making plans I find myself living more in present time. There is peace and strength in staying focused on the moment. For more info, go to taichi4modesto.com or call (209)572-4518
