I’ll bet you didn’t know that I love all things American Graffiti.

Yes friends, it is Graffiti Summer, a time when we celebrate the cool classic things about our community. I love the music, the chrome, the art, the history, the stories, the legends and the fact that Modesto is the only city in the GALAXY that is the Home of American Graffiti, Home of George Lucas, Home of Star Wars and so much more. And I don’t even own a classic car! Wow. This is cool. I was walking through Star Wars land at Disneyland this March, and I was proud that this all came from the mind of a kid who grew up in Ramona Avenue, went to Downey, cruised our streets and went on to create some of the greatest movies ever made. Yes, it makes me smile and yes, I tell my friends that aren’t from here all about it. Heck, even Jeopardy celebrates Modesto’s heritage. Answer: What is American Graffiti?

The best part is, that these Graffiti stories are based on people who lived here and places we know. These are legends, these are the people that inspired George and it is people that make our community what it is today. That’s why I created the Historic Cruise Route to tell our story, and created the Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame, where this month we will induct Mackenzie Phillips, star of American Graffiti alongside our own local cruise legends. That’s why we are working so hard to build the Graffiti USA Museum so that we have a place to share our story with the rest of the world and welcome visitors from all parts of the globe, and interstellarly once we master wormholes. Having a good story and an interesting history will help attract new businesses and attract creative people. We need to attract the brightest and best and the creative cities win. My friend Middagh Goodwin has created GraffitiCon where pop culture meets subculture, where Graffiti collides with Star Wars and comic books. Local author Ken

White has written a play about the Maddox Brothers and Rose that will be read at the end of next month. This was the advent of Rockabilly music. Our community business savvy and the performing arts lead the Gallo Brothers to create the largest winery in the world and our local stage performers to be TV and film superstars. It all starts somewhere and you could be the next story. I am grateful to my family and friends for making this place home. I am thankful for the local businesses that believe in ModestoView as a way to spread good news and idead across our community and ultimately, bringing them more business. I am proud to be a father to the most amazing kids, and for me, every day is Father’s Day. I am truly honored that the Legends of the Cruise felt me worthy to be added to the Graffiti Walk of Fame. This is where we really count on you. We need to amplify the positive messages so I am counting on you to promote the good, use your socials for the positive and look for teamwork and solutions. This is the inspiration of Graffiti Summer to celebrate the good and let’s amplify the positive things about our town. Take time to explore, learn and enjoy and you will feel better. I hope to see you out and about this month and thank you so much for reading. Let’s rock and roll this summer! Chris Murphy Founder and Publisher, ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

Chris Murphy Surprise Legend of the Cruise!

During our September Graffiti Summer 2021, the North Modesto Kiwanis surprised me with the honor of bring named to the Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame. I am so amazed to be there with those that inspired American Graffiti and dragged 10th back in the day, and I am very humbled and thankful that I can help tell these stories and serve up some civic pride for our community. I and my family are very grateful. FOR MORE MODESTO INFO: www.modestoview.com

JUNETEENTH! VIEW By Tasha Williams

JUNETEENTH! Have you heard of it? We are quickly approaching the date, “June 19.” That date is highly significant for African American people here in the United States. Black Americans celebrate Juneteenth on that date. That was the day that the remaining enslaved people in the US learned that they were finally free! The news reached the state of Texas last, when on June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger and 1800 troops of the Union Army went into Galveston and informed the remaining enslaved people of their newfound freedom. The enslaved people were shocked to learn that slavery had been abolished since April of that very same year. So naturally, this announcement called for an exciting celebration that included music,

dancing, and joy. Officially, Juneteenth Day was born! Juneteenth Day began on June 19, 1865, and the celebrations have not ceased since. Today, all nationalities celebrate this joyous event and the year 2022 will probably become the most exciting Juneteenth Celebration Day since 1865. You see, Juneteenth Day has finally become a Federal Holiday, signed into law via the US Congress, and President, Joe Biden. Deborah Sullivan, President of the King Kennedy Board of Directors shared with me an update on the location change for this year’s celebration. Ms. Sullivan stated, “For 50 years, our Juneteenth celebrations have taken place at The King Kennedy Memorial Center at Mellis Park, (renamed: Martin Luther King Park). This year, because it is now a National Holiday, we have chosen to move the Juneteenth fun and festivities to Graceada Park. Hopefully, you all will have time to see the performances, eat great food, and have a fun Saturday afternoon with your friends and family! Graceada Park, 401 Needham Street, Modesto, CA 95354, Saturday, June 18, 2022, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Never mind that the weather here is unpredictable and seasons get left out of the year. June insinuates itself in however it arrives, unsettling, unsavory, unabashedly odd but it’s our version of Summertime and we freaking love it. A lot. June in our community brings all types of revelry and we are blessed to have it. Weddings, LGBTQ+ Pride Celebrations , American Graffiti, the start up of the MoBand season and art and music festivals abound, bringing us all together in the same space (mostly)- like COVID never happened (almost). Go out and grab you a handful of June, sloppy kiss it and savor it. There is too much to do and not enough weekends to do it. One of our local favorite Indie bands, Horizon Point, will be at the Game Room in Sonora on June 4 as part of a triple bill

LOUD, VOWED, PROUD and WOWED was the CROWD By Patty Castillo Davis -show begins at 7 pm and June 25 at Grains of Virtue. My personal favorite MAMA nominated artist Singer Songwriter, Candace Lamb will be performing at the Funky Market at Kerr Park in Oakdale on June 4 from 10:30-1 pm. Kayla Just, will be performing at Contentment Brewing on Friday, June 3, reinterpreting cover tunes. The Art Walk is back at Tresettis’s outdoor space with amazing artists and live music. Thursday, June 16, features Melynda Rodriguez, honoring LGBTQ+ month with a very special performance. I’m ecstatic and honored to announce that my band-A Gathering of the Vibes will be out at the American Graffiti Festival and Car show on Sunday, June 12 from 11:30 am to 2:30 playing tunes from across the genres and decades, come on out to the largest car event in the Central Valley. A heartfelt hug and kiss to my Dad, Alonzo Castillo, who is such a wonderful human, patriot, advocate and leader. Here’s to all the Papas, Daddies, Father Figures, Abuelitos and Step Dads- Happy Father’s Day!

We love to add fun and a theme wherever we can to help get the community engaged and excited about our history and events in town. Whether you stop by one of these amazing local places that is featuring the cocktails or make it at home, remember to enjoy responsibly! Cheers

Return of the Con

By Middagh Goodwin First things first, if you have not bought your tickets to see Star Wars: A New Hope with the Modesto Symphony Orchestra at the Gallo Center on June 3rd or 4th, do that now. You do not want to miss a live performance of John William’s Score while watching such an iconic and influential movie on the big screen. Added fun you can tell your friends and family you went to the Symphony... “Pardon me but do you have any Grey Poupon? June is Graffiti Summer, and GraffitiCon Comic and Car Show embraces that fact along with George Lucas’s other film franchise Star Wars and rolls it out on four wheels with an event fun for the whole family. Pop culture events have become a regular staple in recent years, happening worldwide. Cars are a huge part of pop culture that is often forgotten but not at Graffiti-Con, happening June 26th 10 am-5 pm. This year the event will be held at the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum located at 610 N 9th Street, Modesto, CA, to embrace and celebrate that element missing from other cons. Come on out and check out how the Museum is coming along, grab something from the gift shop and, of course, browse the vendor’s halls where you will find comics, vintage and new toys, pop figures, and so much more. Meet Marc Dodson, who voiced Salacious B Crumb in Return of the Jedi and several of the Mogwais/Gremlins in Gremlin and Gremlin 2. Scenic Drive In George Lucas Ate Here

Knock Out Bun Avocado Diced Jalapenos Lettuce Tomato Cheese Beef Bun

If you have been down Scenic Drive in the last 10 years, you have seen some nice new construction and beautiful commercial buildings. But back in 1962, there were a row of auto shops and other light industrial, including Gustafson’s Foreign Car Service. This is where the racers would hang out, working on their Porches, Ferraris, Lotus and Fiats. One Fiat owner in particular, a young George Lucas, would be there on a regular basis, tuning it up, making it faster and turning it into a rally race car, with this fellow E Curie AWOL teammates. Across the street was a drive in with the most amazing burgers, fries and shakes where these hot rod mechanics and racers would hang out, including a high-school age Lucas. Owned and operated by Jim and Juanita Fee, the Scenic Drive In became s staple for the local hot rodders, racers and cruisers and many others. Now in 2022, the Scenic Drive in is still the go-to place for burgers, in particular the famous “Knock Out” burger. Created in the late ‘50s as the Jack Dempsey Knock Out, it became a classic around the region and today, it still sets the standard for top flight burgers. Jim’s son Ray remembers that they took the Dempsey name off of the Knock Out burger “as he was still alive and may want a cut”. The Knock Out is one of Modesto classic burgers that you really have to taste to understand. It is loaded with a giant beef patty, avocado, cheese, lettuce mayo, bacon and loads of diced jalapenos. It is a burger

you will love and remember. Just like when it opened in 1956, you can drive right up to the window and park, place your order that’s still written on a paper bag, and then you wait on the covered patio or on the hood of your car for your goodness to be ready. Of course some amazing fries, and one of their fresh ice cream milkshakes (I like the fresh banana) to cool you down as you eat the Knock Out. Of course, they have a lot more than the Knock Out Burger. They have dogs, Knock out burritos, chicken sandwiches, Turkey burgers, 22 different shake flavors and so much more. In 2006, the Fees sold the Scenic Drive in to Matthew and Ramacena Gregorian. They have kept Scenic Drive In true to the roots, and as Ray Fee would say, the burger you get today tastes as good as it did back then. Thanks to the Gregorians, the Scenic Drive In has survived fires, a global pandemic and they are right there, making the neon lights come on. One of the constants at Scenic Drive In is Carrie Grajera. She has been making the Knock Out and other specialties since 2000. “We are excited for Graffiti Summer and it gets really busy” she explains. ”Sometimes we stay open past 7 when it is busy”, she continues as she lines up a few more beef patties. I was there on 3 pm on a weekday afternoon and there was a steady stream of people being handled with friendliness with co-worker Valerie Roberts. “This is not FAST food” one sign

reads. This is part of the fun, you order, you wait (not too long) and then you enjoy. If you are really in a hurry, call your order in and you can get on your way. As always, there are specials for Veterans and there is much time for memories as you can grab lunch, and walk through the adjacent cemetery. Our family does this while we go visit grandparents. It’s a truly peaceful way to enjoy your burgers, and pay respects. Scenic Drive In is legit legit and its in the same space, same size its always been, right there on the curve on Scenic. Next time, don’t just drive by, DRIVE IN, and enjoy a Knockout. You will thank me later.

UNPLUGGED VIEW The Amtraker's Guide To The Gallery (volume one) by Aaron Rowan

This summer, I’ll complete my goal of visiting all fifty states, many of which I’ve seen while riding the rails. After a five-year hiatus, I’m soon to embark on another train tour with one of the most stunning songwriters I’ve worked with - the longest and most expansive adventure we’ve set up together. That makes this a fine time to begin a short series on the highlights of my travels across this lovely land and the scenery and culture and music I’ve encountered. We begin with my #1 city: Colorado Springs. Just outside of town is the gorgeous Garden Of The Gods park, where towering rock formations sprout from the earth. The downtown and Old Town districts are artsy and very decent food meccas. Tour the Manitou Cliff Dwellings, and sip from the mineral water springs of Manitou Springs (there are 8 along a walking tour, each with its own distinct flavor.) Step into Districtelleven (a speakeasy accessed through Mood Tapas Bar) for lion’s mane mushroom tacos & inventive cocktails; and The Rabbit Hole (accessed through a booth on the sidewalk leading down a staircase) where you might try the rabbit meatloaf. Recommended local music: ethereal folk songwriter Xanthe Alexis - who happens to be the artist I’m soon to run away with on tour again. Asheville, NC is a gorgeous and art-filled town nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Take a walk and observe the biodiversity, visit the St. Lawrence Basilica, and watch glassblowers at work at Lexington Glass-

works. Savor a supper at innovative tapas restaurant Cúrate. Recommended local music: Aubrey Eisenman & The Clydes, bluegrass & Americana fronted by an upright bassist. Harpers Ferry, WV is a charming destination. Tour the preserved historical buildings including John Brown’s Fort. Try the potato candy at the historic candy shop - good fuel should you decide to hike a stretch of the Appalachian Trail winding through town and along the Shenandoah River. Recommended local music: banjo songwriter Chelsea McBee (based in nearby Martinsburg.) And I’ll extol the virtues of some more destinations next month. Upcoming music at the Dragonfly Art For Life, (1210 J St.): Friday 6/3, Beck & The Band featuring original songwriter Rebecca Hernandez. Pop-rock with a spiritual edge. Friday 6/24, another Young Artist recital starring Shaleiyah Russell, an alum of regional musical theatre and of Opera Modesto. Friday 7/1, Portrait Of Elysia’s first appearance at the gallery. Youth rock for fans of Evanescence. All shows start at 7:30 and come with a $10 admission. Save seats at modestounplugged@ yahoo.com. Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. INTERVIEW Back in the day when I was cruising, all of the little sisters and brothers wanted to go along. Rarely did this ever happen, and babysitting was not the goal when you were cruising. One of the most famous little sisters to ever go cruising was Carol Morrison, the Dewey Weber surfboard t-shirt wearing 12-year old in American Graffiti. This was one of the best/worst tricks in the book when John Milner was trying to get a date with one of the girls in the car was surprised when little sister Carol jumps out, and quickly jumps in the 32 Deuce Coupe. And the rest is history on one of the most famous nights in all of film. I got to speak with American Graffiti star Mackenzie Phillips by phone to learn some more about her experiences making American Graffiti. She began her film career at the age of 12 and went on to star in the hit TV series One Day at a Time that made her a household name along with other series and episode roles. She recently starred in Orange is the new Black. Mackenzie has published two books and she is a Director for Breathe Life Healing Centers, assisting those that struggle with long-term addiction as she had. Mackenzie will be in Modesto on June 8, where she will receive a star on the Cruise Route Walk of Fame along with her other film co-stars. We are excited she is coming to down and let’s find out more about Mackenzie. CM: First off, what do you love more, acting or singing? MP: Oh, that’s a hard question to answer as they are both so fulfilling. But I feel that I really look at myself as an actor that can also be a singer. My work keeps be very busy and fulfilled now, and if I were looking at anything, it would be acting. CM: After becoming globally famous in American Graffiti, Modesto had a love / hate with Graffiti during the late 90s, and we have finally really begun to embrace and market our Graffiti Heritage, even building a new museum. I love the movie and right off, the movie was fun and your part of the movie was the most entertaining part. You and Paul LeMat working together seemed like you had fun. MP: I had a great time, mind you I was 12 years old when we made the film and I will be 63 years old this year. I had never been in a movie before. The only thing I had done was Santa Claus in a school play. I really didn’t know what we were going to be doing, or if it was going to be an afterschool special or an educational thing. At that point, I was just along for the ride. FOLLOW US:

American Graffiti star Mackenzie Phillips

CM: You didn’t realize how big it was going to be? MP: No one did. Remember, American Graffiti was a run-away hit. We didn’t even know what is was going to be called and when we were shooting, we would joke about names for the movie like “rock around the block”. I was a child, all of the other actors had a lot of experience and were at least a decade older than I, and I kind of became the mascot and everyone watched out for me. One thing I did learn was how to drink coffee as we filmed every night from sundown to sunup. CM: How did you make that schedule work? MP: I would go home at 6 am in the morning to producer Gary Kurtz’ rented house in Sausalito. He was my legal guardian during the film because of my age. Gary and his family were Quakers and I was this rock and roll kid, Papa John was my dad, and here I was in this family, sitting around the kitchen table and singing songs. CM: Must have been bizarre. MP: It was bizarre but very safe. I was accustomed to a chaotic lifestyle. CM: How was George as a director, was he hands on, did he give guidance? MP: Little to none. (long pause) He would give us a thumbs up at the end of the take and say ‘terrific” and it would be “ok, that’s it”. Next! We worked hard every night. But it was a long time ago and I was very young and didn’t know what I was doing. CM: How was it working in that environment? MP: I would be in the Deuce Coupe with Paul for hours and hours. Sometimes the car would be mounted on a trailer as we drove around and there were cameras surrounding us and we were kind of trapped in there and if we wanted to get out, we had to crawl out Follow the View Crew on Twitter, starting with @modestoview

the window. But really, it was cold and in the middle of the night and everyone was all bundled up and we were there in t-shirts. For most of the filming, George was outside the front window looking in at us, and if he wanted to talk to us, he would have to come around stick his head in the window. One of my favorite pictures from that time is of me with George looking in through the window. I really like it and it really illustrates what it was like.

By Chris Murphy Centers. I am a homeowner in Sherman Oaks California. I don’t think of my self as what you said, but I do know it’s a thing. I so just want to be a normal person. I look at this as a gift, as a celebrity it does open doors. Sometimes one of our patients will say, “I remember you, you were in One Day at a Time and it helps me connect with people. If that helps them, I appreciate that as I am a person also in long-term recovery.

CM: There seemed like there was so much camaraderie on screen. Did you stay friends after the movie, and did you all mix in the movie as it seems to like there were different story tracks in the film? MP: When American Graffiti came out, we had the same manager. She managed Candy, Cindy, me and Harrison. So I have pretty much known Candy Clark all my life and we live in the same neighborhood and we do shows together in fact, we are going up to Petaluma this week. We all really did stay friends.

CM: I always wonder, what if American Graffiti failed? What would have happened? No Happy Days, no Laverne & Shirley, Fonz, Mork or Star Wars? American Graffiti really kind of lit the fuse on everything. MP: Wow that is interesting. It’s so funny, I’ll go to Mel’s Diner to get a milk shake or something, and I look at the menu and the walls and I’m like, Oh my god, my picture is on every menu and the walls at every Mel’s Diner.

CM: We are excited to have Candy come up for our American Graffiti Festival. Hopefully you will be able to return in the future for the festival and the parade. MP: That would be great. I would love to. CM: We are also wishing for Bo Hopkins recovery. MP: Oh me too. CM: The film is really good and timeless, my kids and a lot of their friends think that American Graffiti is s cool movie, its not for just the old people. It is amazing how it doesn’t get old. MP: It is a period piece, and it doesn’t have to get old. It doesn’t have to live up to any standard. People love the film and I am so very grateful for this. It was a launch for so many of us. CM: I have sat in a Deuce coupe and they are really small. I could barely get out of it and I don’t think I could cruise in it. How did you deal with it? MP: It was really small and it wasn’t comfortable. But we had a lot of fun, we just laughed all the time. It’s funny you think about a 1932 vehicle, it is very bare bones compared to our cars with the bells and whistles, it was just so bare bones and like I said, we had to climb out of the windows. CM: You made the transition to One Day at a Time as Julie Cooper, you have really become one of Hollywood’s icons. How does it feel to be a permanent part of pop culture? MP: It’s a wonderful thing to hear you say that. I really don’t think of myself that way. I’m Shane’s mom, You know I have a son named Shane. I am the Director of Patient Referral Relations at Breathe Life Healing

CM: Dewey Webber? Was that your idea? MP: No, that was wardrobe. Dewey Weber sent me a bunch of T-shirts a decade ago. Fans will come to shows with a Dewey Weber T-shirt for me to sign, or a gear shift knob, or a die cast car. CM: One of the things we want to do is take a run by Ramona and some of the other Lucas locations in Modesto. MP: Oh yeah, I remember that well: “231 Ramona 231 Ramona, it’s easy to find!”. CM: We are excited to see you in Modesto on the Walk of Fame. You will be right there with the other stars and George Lucas. Hopefully you can make it up again for the full festival in the future. MP: Thank you so much for having me and I can’t wait to get up there and I would love to come back again Please join us in 10th Street Plaza, June 8 at 5:30 for the Graffiti USA Historic Cruise Route Walk Of Fame with the 2022 Inductees and special inductee Mackenzie Phillips. 2022 Walk of Fame Inductees By Chris Murphy

As George Lucas once said about American Graffiti,

these where the stories that he grew up with cruising on 10th and 11th Street in those formative high school years. Everything was about your boyfriend or girlfriend, being seen on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, driving, racing, parking or just circling again and again, maybe getting a ticket or two, or twenty or over one hundred like Terry McGrath of the Road Rebels, who will be honored in memoriam at the 2022 4th of July Parade. The stories that Lucas told in American Graffiti were based on people here in Modesto and these are the people we honor on the Modesto Historic Cruise Route Legends of the Cruise, Walk of Fame. There are great stories that can be told, and many that can’t, and that is part of the legend. These legends must live on and our kids and their kids need to know all about them. As we are growing up, we now have Cruise Legends that graduated in the 70s. These were good times and let’s meet the 2022 Legends of the Cruise.

Deacons

The Deacons car club was established 60 years ago and still meet as a group. Founded at Downey High School in 1962 by a group of young men who were interested in hot rods, cars, and drag racing. They were affiliated with the International Car Club of America. They all loved to cruise 10th Street in the day. A couple weekends a month you would find several members drag racing at the Kingdon Drag Strip located between Stockton and Lodi. By 1965 there were approximately 30 active members. The Deacons always stopped to assist travelers that were broken down on the highway. They never accepted money to help a fellow traveler, always leaving their card behind saying they were “helped by the Deacons”. Another project of the club was car washes and poker runs for fun and then donating the funds to a local children’s charity. There are still 12 members that get together twice a year for reminiscing and still enjoying the hobby of classic cars.

Vern Silva Turlock High School- 1965

My car was a 1957 Chevy. My senior ditch day was spent at a friend’s working on his car. Now I am helping friends with repairs and building cars from the ground up. I went to Vietnam from 1967 to 1968 and came back and started a family with my wife Josie, now married for 64 years. In 1971, I started building my first Street Rod – a 1923 T Bucket and the rest is history. I am a past president of the Modesto Area Street Rod Association (1983). We joined the club in 1978. It was a young club with growing families like ours. Street rodding was a great family sport with things for the whole family to do at shows. At that time, we had the roadster that soon became too small for our family. We then found a 1928 Ford two-door sedan that would be perfect for us but needed a lot of TLC. We did it all ourselves, the paint, upholstery, and everything in between and the RM4Four was born. It had a brick V6 and made a trip to Oklahoma City in 1983. We have met a lot of great friends and have seen a lot of beautiful country in our travels with our cars - Nevada, Oklahoma, Colorado, and many shows in California. In July 2019, we drove our 1932 Roadster to Victoria, Canada. We hope to make it to Louisville, Kentucky in the next couple of years. We’re not sure which one of our cars we

Dan Vierra today

Dan Vierra Our Lady of Mercy High, Merced - 1961

Dan grew up on a dairy east of Turlock and attended Our Lady of Mercy High School in Merced. One of his earliest memories was receiving his first car – a pedal car – at age four. Since then he’s owned Studebakers, Pontiacs, Chryslers, Corvairs, Camaros, Corvettes, and Fords. Today, he drives a ’29 Model A all-steel full fender street rod, a recently restored ’52 Ford custom pick-up originally built by Gene Winfield, a ’57 Facel Vega, a ’61 Corvette, and an exact replica of the ’64 Plymouth 426 4-speed that he bought new in ’64. Dan was a member of the Eliminators Car Club and a trophy winner at Balico Drags at the old Turlock Airport. In the mid-60s he joined the Ports Auto Club. For the past 45 years, Dan has been a member of the Modesto Area Street Rod Association. will take – the 1957 Chevy, 1932 Ford Roadster, 1965 Buick Riviera, or our son Randy’s 1969 Camaro – but we know for sure it will be another adventure! We’re not done yet, new project is currently a 1935 Ford pick-up with a LS motor. Life has been good! End note: “Vern cruised 10th and 11th streets after coming home from Vietnam. He was an original member of the Untouchables Car Club in Turlock. Vern was a mechanic and gunner in a UH-1 “Huey” helicopter, mechanic during the day and gunner by night. Ron Pippin

Downey High – 1975 His high school car was a 1929 Ford Model A with a Flat Head 8BA V8. After high school Ron went to work in construction industry while attending what would become the Construction Management Program at Sacramento State. Ron would continue his career in Institutional and industrial construction, eventually starting his own business along with his brother Larry, where he continued for the next 25 years before retirement. Ron joined the Faros Car Club in late 1972 following his two older brothers, Larry and Terry, where he has remained a member until this day, “once a Faro always a Faro”. He is currently the president of the Faros car club. He also sits on the board of directors for the Graffiti Classic Car Museum, along with a group of very dedicated board members and advisors. Ron never left the Modesto Car Culture since high school, collecting cars, vintage gas, oil and auto related signs and artifacts. His collection ranges from correct cars to street rods to vintage motorcycles. Ron married his “very patient” high school sweetheart Lori (Stabelfeld). Lori enjoys the car culture along with their daughter Jennifer, son Marcus and their families. Ron raced SCCA Road Racing for several years and was the SCCA Sacramento chapter Street Touring U champion in 2006. With two Brothers involved with the Modesto car culture in high school, they wrecked each other’s cars, blew clutches and raised all kinds of havoc. They got pretty good at hid-

ing damaged cars from their dad. Being the “little brother” Ron would get away with way too much. On one occasion in 1974 Ron loaned his car to his good buddy so that he could take out a girl that was not his girlfriend (incognito) so Ron rode his buddies Kawasaki 500 Mach 3 motorcycle for the evening. Ron had a few beers that evening and ended up driving the Kawasaki through a McHenry Avenue motel wall coming to rest on the toilet in the motel. He also was escorted home by the police on more than one occasion, back when they would escort you home and have a word with your parents. On one occasion this resulted in his brother Terry’s drivers license being taken away by their dad, his guilt was that he gave Ron a ride home, go figure. Back then the cruise was McHenry Ave., 5 points to McHenry Village, the village being the gathering point to see what was going on for the evening, you never made plans prior to the cruise as the evening would always develop as the night went on. It was good clean fun, most of the time, reference being escorted home by the police. Ron credits his two older brothers Larry and Terry and friends in the car culture for his continued interest in the history of Modesto’s Graffiti era. The guys that were involved in the culture at the time are lifelong friends to this day. “It really speaks to the Modesto area car culture that develops and maintains these lifelong relationships”

Bob Rose Downey High – 1973

He got his love of cars and street rods at a very young age from his father, Luis Rose. His first car was a 1947 Ford pickup. Bob married his high school sweetheart Jackie and will be married 47 years in August. His first “ground up” street rod build was a 1938 Chevrolet Master Sedan at the age of 22. Bob and Jackie had two daughters but this did not slow his love for the cars. Bob has had many award winning cars through the years from his 1952 Chevrolet Pickup to 1956 Chevrolet 2-door Wagon to a 1962 Chevrolet Impala Convertible along with his multiple national award winning 1960 Rambler Wagon. If Bob was not building a street rod, he was helping build his buddy’s projects, forever giving back to the car culture. Everyone liked to have Bob on the build, as nothing is ever half baked when it came to his work and his vision. Bob is currently building a 1950 Ford “Shoebox” coupe, as in the past, nothing is “half baked”. Bob is known and respected throughout the United States FOLLOW US:

for his restorations of metal antiques, pre-war bicycles, peddle cars, safes, toys, coffee grinders and about anything else one can think of in the collectible market. The quality of his restoration work is recognized with very few equals. Bob serves on the Graffiti Museum Board as an adviser and is a proud member the famed Faros Car Club. He was a constant presence in the McHenry Avenue cruise scene all through high school in the 70’s. There are some stories but those are best not shared as we are not positive the statutes have expired, what his buddies knew was that Luis was not happy.

Jenny Kenoyer

Modesto High - 1953

Jenny has been honored by the North Modesto Kiwanis as the Grand Marshal of the 2022 American Graffiti Festival Cruise Parade. As Modesto High’s first woman yell leader, Jenny has been a champion for Modesto’s Graffiti scene as long as she can remember. Born in Patterson, she moved to Modesto when she was 5. In high school, she was active in school leadership and was and is an avid MoHigh supporter. She has 5 children that also graduated from Modesto High so it’s a family thing. Over the years she had a great career as a nurse caring for others, and then started her second career serving the community of Modesto. Jenny is a two term Modesto City Councilperson and has been an advocate for positive community programs and activities. All along, she has been a champion of the return of Graffiti cars the streets of Modesto, supporting the Graffiti USA Museum, The Cruise Route, Walk of Fame and so much more. She is currently battling cancer and has just survived another round of kemo, but she still is active, attending events and council meetings. She is a big Modesto supporter and has earned the friendship of many in the classic car community. Anyone that has seen Jenny at a Graffiti event knows her Modesto cheer. M- clap clap clap clap O – D – E – S – T O! Modesto! Modesto! Modesto! Please join our car community in welcoming Jenny to the Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame

Foot note: Bob’s dad Luis Rose was an inspiration to many kids who grew up to be Hot Rodders. When Bob and his buddies were in grade school Louie always had the “cool” truck, chromes with moons, snuck down a bit and the kids would fight over who got to ride in the back to the little league games and this was in the 60’s.true story.

BIG VIEW By Chris Murphy

Graffiti Summer is back for 2022 and our engines are revving, and it is time to Peel Out! “Where Were You in ’62”, asked the promotions for American Graffiti. This year is the 60th Anniversary of the most legendary high school class. Hot rods, rock and roll, chrome, car hops, burgers, burnin’ rubber and great times are the spirit of Modesto USA. Our Graffiti heritage is so much more than just classic cars and nostalgia, it is our cool history and sense of community that has made us who we are today, and what we will be in our future.

Graffiti is for Everyone!

Whether you were a WWII or Vietnam vet returning to your hometown to “Drag 10th or “Cruise McHenry” stopping at Burge’s or A&W, or a kid graduating from high school, in 1952, 1962, 1972, 1982 and 1992 there is a cruise memory for everyone. We are building the Graffiti USA Museum to celebrate this history, so that the classes of ’2022, ’32 and ’42 will be able to appreciate what the fuss was all about and why it is still fun today. Everyone in Modesto should see American Graffiti. It will be showing at a special event with a car show at 1 pm on June 4 at the State Theatre. Don’t miss it and learn what this is all about. There is truly something for everyone. #1 on the “do not miss” column is the show that started it all. The North Modesto Kiwanis American Graffiti Festival is largely responsible for bringing Graffiti back to Modesto. The Cruise Parade on Friday the 10th is so fun, the Car show on Saturday and Sunday the 11th and 12 features over 1,000 cars with fun, food, music and so much more. Plus, it is a fundraiser for all the good works and organizations that the Kiwanis support! www.americangraffitifestival.com

Start your engines. The Modesto Street Rods Car Show at McHenry Village is the season opener. Sunday June 5th at McHenry Village, there are cars everywhere and you can stroll the restaurants along the way, and it is really fun to enjoy.

The most recent car club to join in is the Modesto Pistons. It was so cool to be driving down H Street and seeing the giant billboard by the railroad tracks announcing the Modesto Pistons @pistonscarclubcalifornia. Welcome, there is always room for more and Modesto loves all car clubs. This is exciting. Last month, there was great lowrider & custom car show and cruise at the State Theatre. Nearly 300 cars filled the streets around the historic State Theatre, low and slow, bright and shiny and many ready to bounce. Kids, parents, and families filled the streets to admire the paint, the airbrushing, the louvers, the restorations, the chrome and so much more. Capping off the evening was a special showing of Boulevard Nights and it was a celebration. Our love of classic cars crosses over our cultures and that makes our story even better for the future.

Who said that Graffiti cars all have to be old and chrome? They can be fast & furious, imported & exotic too. These cars will be the classics of the future. Who would have thought a Matador or Cutlass Supreme (with a 442!) would be cool? But they are, and the next generation will have their fave classics. The Mustangs, the Acuras, BMWs, and the Hondas will have their place right with those Camaros and Firebirds. @carsandcoffeemodesto

Classic Americana Drive-Ins

We love our oldies music, delicious treats, and a classic drive-in here in Modesto USA. We all know and love A&W DriveIn in Downtown Modesto with Elvis and delicious root beer floats and Sonic on McHenry with roller skating servers and varieties of slushies, but make sure not to miss out on some of the oldest stops and delicious drive-ins in town – Web’s, Fast Eddie’s and Sno White.

The oldest original drive in at the same location is Web’s, home of the Big Ben. Located at 7th and G streets, Web’s has been serving burgers since 1954. Despite the cosmetic changes and an inside dining room, the burgers are amazing and it is a great lunch time break with a Big Ben, fries and a shake. @websdrivein Fast Eddie’s MOAB is faster than ever. Fast Eddie Gibson sold his classic drive in, located on Tully Rd since 1954. But have no fear, long time fan Robert Wilson, the owner of the Devine Swine purchased it last year and has vowed to keep the classic favorites and add some new specialties like Beer and Wine. Robert is a MOAB fan and the classic MOAB (Meal On A Bun) Burger is still a highlight, wrapped in the signature checkerboard paper. 1228 Tully Modesto.www.facebook.com/Fast-EddiesMOAB-327350435149 If you are craving some big burgers and a frosty soft serve cone, head out Yosemite Blvd to the Sno White Burgers Drive in, opened in 1964. Rock and Rock and Roll Radio, Let’s go! From the days of the cruise, it has always been the music. Back in the 50s & 60s, there was usually one rock and roll station, and in Modesto it was KFIV 1360 aka K5. We had a common soundtrack. George Lucas carefully selected every song in American Graffiti and those hits are still solid gold today. In the cruising days, Dwight Case would broadcast live, calling out dedications from a booth at Burge’s and later, Wolfman Jack blasting from the border on XERB. During the Cruise Parade on June 10, 6-9 pm, please tune your radio to the KVIN 92.3 / 920 am for Graffiti Cruising Hits.

Mobile Radio The 610 KFRC Mobile Studio, “The Sturgeon” comes to Modesto on June 10th !Growing up in Modesto, the “other” AM radio station we listened to most in the 60s, 70s, & 80s was 610 KFRC from San Francisco with Dr. Don Rose, Bobby Ocean and more! The KFRC Sturgeon was a mobile broadcasting studio, launched on November 1, 1980 becoming a Northern California Radio landmark broadcasting from hundreds of locations including the beaches of Santa Cruz, The Golden Gate Bridge, Cal Expo California’s State Fair, The USS Coral Sea, and Dr. Don’s Rose live broadcast from just up the street in Stockton, CA in 1983. It even hosted Larry King. The Sturgeon was retired in 2005, but in 2014, KFRC Staffer Bill Shakespeare located the Sturgeon for restoration. Shakespeare passed the Sturgeon over to KFRC alumni Staffer Chris Sharp and it is now a radio museum on wheels. Visit the 610 Sturgeon at the Graffiti Museum 610 N 9th 8-4 pm then check it out in the Cruise Parade at 6:30 The Modesto 2022 KFRC Day Live Broadcast on Boss Boss Radio and That 70’s Channel will be the first LIVE Radio Broadcast in the Sturgeon since KUSP Santa Cruz’s 2008 Monterey Jazz Festival Broadcast. HISTORY VIEW

Modesto’s American Graffiti Premiere By Harrison Power

The first time that American Graffiti, the acclaimed film by local legend George Lucas showcasing the cruising coming-of-age of 1960’s Modesto, made its screen debut was in August 1973 with releases in Los Angeles and New York. Although the movie is set in Modesto, with references and allusions to familiar sites and monikers around town throughout, the movie did not make its way to Lucas’s hometown until four months after the initial release when a benefit fundraiser was arranged to feature the film. Organized by the Stanislaus Branch of the Central California Heart Association, the Modesto “premiere” of American Graffiti took place on November 21, 1973. It was shown at the Briggsmore Theatre, which was one of the newest and modern movie theatres in town at the time, having been opened to the public on April 26, 1967.

For the benefit showing there were 524 tickets sold at $10 each, with a champagne reception held following the screening with George Lucas and his wife Marcia attending as the honored guests of the evening. By the time the American Graffiti made it to Modesto, the film had already been seen across the country coast to coast, and was considered one of the best films of the year, having been the third top-grossing movie released in 1973.

Summertime Fun

By Monica Barber

Say hello to summertime! It’s Ms M’s favorite season, and she loves to enjoy a nice cold brew. Today she’s sipping fat one of downtown’s favorite vegan spot, The Farmacy. While her schedule doesn’t allow time to enjoy much of the menu, it is highly recommended that you do. Summertime is a great opportunity to get out and try the wonderful offerings in Modesto. Here are a few that won’t stretch out your budget too much. Movies are a summer must-do! Regal Cinema’s Summer Movie Express has returned with flicks for the whole family. Every week two family films for $2 per person are screened Tuesdays and Wednesdays all summer. The first movies of June Penguins of Madagascar and The Lego Movie are on May 31st and June 1st. Modesto Regal is located at 3969 McHenry Blvd. Modesto, CA 95356. Hey Modesto! I hope you all had an awesome May.

As you all know, one of the main things Modesto is known for is the Modesto Graffiti parade. This year it will be held from June 10th through the 12th. Dive into the rich history that Modesto has. The 10th will begin with the parade Friday evening and the show on the 11th and 12th. The cruise parade is located downtown and the show is at Modesto Junior college west campus. Modesto has the only official American Graffiti car show in the nation. The original cruisers would drive through 10th and 11th street downtown! A popular

Have A Great June Modesto! place during this time was Burges drivein, but it sadly closed in 1967. The most known cruisers were called the Faros. This was a car club that was later renamed by George Lucas with changed spelling in “American Graffiti.” Although cruising is no longer allowed, we get the wonderful opportunity to do it once a year during the parade! The parade begins at 6 pm, and I hope to see everyone there and you need to register to cruise. The classic car show and festival will be held from 9 am -5 pm. The area’s best musicians will play many different music genres! There will be an award show for the best cars of 2022 at 2 pm. You don’t want to miss this amazing day! With this hot weather we’re having, I highly recommend cooling off at the Modesto reservoir. This is a super fun activity to do with family and friends. This is also a fun place to go fishing! There are many activities allowed here, such as swimming, boating, jet skiing, bird watching, and waterfowl hunting! It is just off Highway 132. Many camping sites, picnic tables, archery ranges, and barbecues exist! I recommend spending a day here. I hope you have a great June Modesto!

ZEN VIEW By Mary Layton

Are we running out of time? When I talk to people about their experience of time, everyone says that time seems to go by faster. I think, maybe the fact that the world has been going through so many changes in the past 3 years has something to do with a sense of urgency. Are we running out of time? We may feel that we need to do things right now rather than later. Who knows what next week or tomorrow will bring? We try to accomplish more, get more done in a shorter amount of time and then tackle the next thing. No wonder we feel that time goes by too fast. There’s a lot on everybody’s plate. Rising prices, changing the way we have been thinking about things, making different choices. While many aspects of our lives today may be anxiety producing I think we can still get a hold of ourselves and gain something meaningful. The other

day I caught myself multitasking. I was running through my house half-dressed, eating a sandwich while also feeding my cat. So while I was racing with time, getting ready for work, I suddenly stopped and decided to take a deep breath and just stood still for a moment. I realized I had become like a car without a driver. Just going on automatic. Rather than giving in to my fear that I wouldn’t get everything done and getting tired and cranky in the process I had managed to slow myself down for a moment simply by remembering my humanness. The awareness changed the quality of the rest of the day. Thank God! Of course, there are times when our schedule demands for us to be on time and certain things need to get done in a timely fashion. Regardless how great our challenges - it is important to remember that there are still many things to be grateful for, where we live, the love we have for family, friends, coworkers and neighbors, pets and plants, the comfort of listening to the birds chirping in the morning, or watching the peacefulness of a sunset. In short, we can be grateful for this time. For more info go to: taichi4modesto.com or call (209) 572-4518
