EDITOR Greetings Modesto Friends! I love being a Murphy in March! Heck, I like being a Murphy all the time. My girls love being Irish Murphy Girls. My wonderful wife Rebecca McNulty Murphy is as Irish as can be. My luck of the Irish is my amazing girls. They are the best girls a husband and father could have. I have found my pot of gold and it is them. Our region looks like Ireland for a few weeks each March. March is always a special month for a Murphy. We love our Irish heritage and have had the chance to explore it far deeper over the last couple of years. What we’ve learned is you do not have to be Irish to enjoy the fun of St. Patrick’s or the luck of the Irish, or so many of the traditions from Ireland. Luck is a weird thing and actually, is there really such thing? Is it how we look at life? Is it how we make do with certain situations? You could say with this drought we are unlucky but that’s not what luck is really all about. Every area has its upsides and its downsides and it is what you do with what you have that makes you lucky. That is why every month it is so exciting to put together each issue of Modesto View because we get to look at what makes our community good and talk to people that make their own luck and change the way our community is an open business that keep our community thriving. Every ModestoView is like a pot of gold of cool new discoveries that hopefully will enhance your community luck, as you will be in the know of all the good things, places and people. Luck is what and who you surround yourself with. We get a double feature of St. Patrick’s Day this year as P. Wexford stays true and has their MAMA winner festival on March 17 and then LuckyFest brings the party on Sat the 21st. This is not the only green you get as it is asparagus season, there is a Celtic Festival in Sonora and the Camellia Festival will showcase dazzling blooms and we count down until the Modesto Certified Farmers Market opens on April 2. The huge Modesto Mara-

thon is happening March 22 and world class racers will come to Modesto from all over the USA. There is music, fun and food all month long and to find out more, all you have to do is check our event calendar at ModestoView.com We even have mobile version so you are never without the best event calendar in our reason. Really, it is the best, we’re not kidding. We are working hard, scouring all the places and loading our calendar with just the good local stuff. www.modestoview.com Now, there is only one precaution you need to take. The drought is going to make the conditions for West Nile Virus worse this year. Our Abigail had West Nile Meningitis last year and it was terrible. Don’t let it happen to you. Wear mosquito repellant and get rid of standing water. Report abandoned pools. Ok, back to the good stuff. We want you to shop and live local. When you are purchasing goods, buy them in our local stores and keep our economy working. You see all the wonderful ads here in ModestoView? They help us spread this good news each month and these are the businesses that really care about our community. I thank you in advance for eating, drinking, shopping, and living local and a really want to thank our awesome advertisers. This magazine is possible because of you. We are proud to be a positive part of Modesto. Go Downtown and see the new murals that we are supporting. There are 3 new Murals going up in just 30 days. You need to check them out at 1008 J St, 1511 J St and 15th and J. Take a walk, ride your bike, walk the trails, enjoy dining on the patios, and stop and listen to live music when you can and really become part of the scene. You will love it and you will feel the luck of living in Modesto. Thank you and Erin Go Bragh to all.

brew Valhalla Meadery: PILLAGE RESPONSIBLY by Brandilyn Brown If you love St. Patrick’s Day and want to celebrate in true Irish-Scandinavian style, consider a bottle of mead. Valhalla Mead to be exact! Founded by father and son, Robert & Alex Eltringham, they are on the cusp of becoming the next great thing produced in Modesto. They brew their mead the old-fashioned way, using honey from local bees. They take water, a ton of honey, add yeast, and let it blissfully ferment. Sounds simple, right? But this isn’t your typical store-bought faux-mead; which is usually a white wine with honey added for flavor. They add intoxicating juice blends to their authentic mead so your taste buds will dance with every sip you take. Olde Babylon: ancient, simple and perfected. This won First Place Best of Show in Stanislaus County, First Place in the Midwinter Homebrew Competition for best traditional mead, and Third Place in the Arizona Cup. Longhouse: just a touch

of lemon. This recipe brought home the Best of Show in the Arizona Cup and First Place in the Midwinter Homebrew Competition for best non-traditional mead. You can’t go wrong with this smooth blend! You can pair it with anything. Blood Eagle: made with blood oranges. Fruity & tangy; like a California summer in a bottle. It also boasts of ribbons for Second Place in Stanislaus County and Second Place for State of California. Dragon’s Breath: fiery habanero.

A touch of fire in your throat that leaves you wanting more. Try marinating your chicken in it the next time you grill. Freya’s Tears: strawberry cardamom. The two flavors create a perfect juicy blend that truly packs a punch. It pairs well with a chocolate dessert. (This flavor is my personal favorite!) Dark Grove: chocolate orange. A boisterous flavor you can use to woo your date over a plate of French Toast, but not so romantic you couldn’t enjoy it in a drink-

ing game with buddies. Shield Maiden: rose kumquat. Elegant rose with lively citrus notes. Although this tastes like a playful version of Blood Eagle, don’t be fooled, war-trained shield maidens are not to be toyed with! This tastes great as a dressing in fruit salad, or pair with dairy. (A white cheese or yogurt.) Northern Lights: lavender vanilla. Purely regal & sophisticated. Replace the English Breakfast you normally serve at brunch, and serve with biscotti or a cucumber sandwich. Robert and Alex are flavor badazz masterminds. It doesn’t matter WHAT kind of mead you like, they’ve got something for everyone! Even non-alcoholic “pillage juice” for all the designated drivers out there, because everyone needs to pillage responsibly! Please look for them at the Sonora Celtic Faire on Saturday March 7th, and grab a sample of their award-winning delicious mead! From the Valhalla Meadery to you: PILLAGE RESPONSIBLY! Visit them on facebook for updates on special events and tastings: https://www. facebook.com/valhallameadery

March Lucky

by Ruben J Porras Welcome to March in Modesto. The third month of 2015 will be all about singing nuns, bearded leprechauns, a guy that wants you to get into his car, a hilarious wild-haired female comedian and so much more. You can find information on Modesto events on our website at www.modestoview.com and in the back of this issue. In the midst of all the action taking place in the city, I will celebrate my 40th birthday. This is a milestone year that my doctors tried to convince me I would never see. I am lucky that they were smart enough to diagnosis and treat me, but I am even happier that they underestimated my willpower. I told them when they gave me six months to live that I would survive to see my daughters marry and graduate from high school and college. Next month I will have a new daughter in my life, and I will fight to be here for her wedding and graduations also. Daddy is not going anywhere. I plan to stay busy this month and I hope that as many of you as possible can come out to support the events that I will attend as a representative of the ModestoView. On March 22nd I will be at LuckyFest downtown in the ModestoView-sponsored Murphy’s Irish Pub and on March 29th I plan to cover the Modesto Marathon which is using one of our ModestoView covers on winner’s medals and marketing materials. To keep myself even busier, I plan on finally trying to take my creative projects to new levels. I was recently told by the owner of a trendy boutique hotel in Sacramento that he would like to buy some of the images that I have taken over the years. That little bit of kindness and encouragement lit a fire under me that needed to be lit. I plan on getting my artwork on shirts, greeting cards and other items. If I fail, I fail. But if I never try I fail automatically. If I can offer any advice to anyone I would say to never stop trying to make your dreams come true. You never know when someone might explain to you that you are sick. You never know when the rug will get pulled out from under you. Life is unpredictable.

Be happy and peaceful through all the ups and downs you face. One more thing – We have a new column for ModestoView and it will focus on events and venues that are within an easy drive of Modesto. Look for “GlobalView” on www.Modestoview.com. I and the ViewCrew have been traveling and kicking over rocks to find interesting destinations to feature. Look forward to finding out where to stay to have elephants deliver your morning breakfast,

where you can camp in a bus near the ocean, where you can relax in the river on a beautiful chair and enjoy a picnic, where you can see the world’s most famous entertainers perform, and where you can find delicious food in places that you might not expect. Feel free to drop me a line anytime at ruben@modestoView.com with tips, story ideas, or for any other reason. I do this for you!

ART The Ides of March

Patrick Karnihan

by Jim Christiansen Stanislaus Family Justice Center will reprise their Annual “Art of Justice” celebration and fundraiser, featuring a child inspired collaboration with local artists, to facilitate a silent auction, artists reception and wine and appetizer gala, to support their work with victims of Domestic Violence. The Center has art programs and ongoing work with children and families. Tickets for the March 26 event are $20 advance, $25 at the door. More information www.StanislausFamilyJustice.org Before the Ides of March, let’s get to the opener, March 2, when Stanislaus Artist Open Studio Maps go on sale. I’ve been asked for better explanation of the event, now in its Fifth year, so here’s the scoop. Open Studio is an artistic tradition, where a group of artists coordinate a day, a week, or a weekend to invite the public in to visit the artists in to their studios where they create Art. We show off our work in progress, the old stuff, the tools of the trade, and answer questions. It’s a meet the public, the collectors, the students, type of event to let you know what we do, and how to contact us. Our Open Studio tour is April 25 and 26, and it has a map with directions, and artist contact information and addresses, to get you to the studios. Maps are $10, with Students 18 and under getting in FREE. The map sales help us fund the posters, the map printing the publicity for the event, along with the participating artist sign up fees. We get some additional support in cash or in trade from local sponsors, who advertise in the maps, post our posters, print the maps, sell the maps, or put us on display at the preview shows ahead of the Open Studio Weekend. Similar events take place in the Bay area, Santa Cruz and Napa Counties, and around the country. Ours is an allvolunteer effort by the participating artists. Maps will be sold at The Chartreuse Muse, Mistlin Gallery, Carnegie Art Center, Oakdale Chamber of Commerce, and Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau, and at the Three Preview Shows. Previews are FREE, at Nasco Arts and Crafts, April 11, and Gallo Center lobby during the April 17 and 18

Modesto Symphony Shows. It pays to get your map early, as there are 42 stops on the map, and 66 artists. You can plan your route, the type of art, or which artists you want to visit. Many artists will be doing a demonstration, or showing out of their portfolios. You can expect to see all types of art media. Collage, Painting, Sculpture, Art Jewelry, Woodwork, Metal work, Mural and printmaking and more included this year. A sample of each artist’s work and short description included in the map booklet. Modesto View is a sponsor. www.stanislausaos.wordpress.com for more information. Students are welcome at next month’s Open Studio, but have their own show in March at The Mistlin Gallery, with the Annual Young at Art Show. Area Art Students from the very youngest to seniors in High School are featured. This show usually well attended, and shows off the next generation of local artists. The Downtown Modesto Art Walk map changes this month, with a new roster of venues for Third Thursday. New out of town trip to consider is a visit to the MADE gallery in Knight’s Ferry. Next to the ice cream shop in the Miller building, MADE features art and crafts hand made in the area.

BAR

Beer, Burgers, and Blarney: R ivet s A meric a n Grill By Kate Firkin Serpa Photos by Phil Johnson

I’ve never fully understood the corned beef/cabbage/green beer meal plan St. Paddy’s Day traditionally calls for. As an Irish lass myself, dyed beer coupled with smelly meat and veg are totally wrong -- where’s the damn potatoes? Where’s the whiskey? You know what ‘blarney’* means, right? Deceptive nonsense -- or, my crude interpretation, total B.S. We need delicious, not green beer! We need enormous, non-cabbage-filled burgers! We need potatoes! We need whiskey! We, obviously, need to go to Rivets. For those of you thinking Rivets American Grill is just another burger/beer pony trick, you are obviously not in the know. Don’t worry; Charles Cathcart, Rivets bartender extraordinaire, is going to get you in the right. See that big barrel perched on the top shelf of Rivets amply-stocked full bar? That’s the Rivets (Barrel-Aged) Manhattan Project. Un-aged rye, orange bitters, and sweet vermouth have been doing some sexy intermingling in that there barrel for the past seven weeks and are going to be ripe to enjoy come March. And unless I am mistaken (always a possibility), Rivets might be on the map as the only Modesto bar serving barrel-aged cocktails. Speaking of the beautiful brown nectar: “No one is touching our bourbon selection. We easily have over 100 bottles,”

8

March Lucky

states Charles, who prefers Basil Hayden’s and Bulleit. Giant spherical ice cubes are, naturally, offered for those dapper individuals enjoying their scotch or bourbon on the rocks. Bourbon isn’t the only thing that’s kicking differently at Rivets -- “I’ll tell you right now,” states Charles, “this burger here is something else.” The Peanut Butter and Jealous Burger, brand new on the menu, features jalapeno pepper jelly, crunchy peanut butter, pepper jack, and bacon -pair that with a pint or Rivets specialty cocktail and you’ve got yourself a flavor commitment so strong you might have to tell your significant other ya’ll need to go on a break because you’re in love. On the topic of love, Charles performed

some mixology magic with his Jameson, lime juice, ginger beer concoction “She’s My Ride Home” (Negative -- Phil is my ride home), to accompany my specialty burger, sweet potato fries, and regular fries -- double fries in honor of St. Patty’s. Are you peanut butter-burger and jealous yet? Well, you will be once you get a load of the 24 beer taps, not including their selection of tall-boys, and select bottles of beer, vino, and bubbles. A quick glance up to ceiling spreads out the ‘graveyard’ of retired taps, and a look to the right near the kitchen door showcases the up-and-coming brew contenders for next month. So many suds, so little time. For those of you stopping into Rivets American Grill in March, you’re going to have to prep with some serious stretching and be ready to multitask. Aside from delicious dining, delectable drinks, live local music, karaoke, shuffle board, the big games on their big TVs, a dog-friendly dining patio, and Charles generally kicking ass in the drink department bar side, you’re also going to have to be ready to pinch all of those boring types that will be green with envy at what an excellent time you’re having. Lucky you. Happy St. Paddy’s Day, Modesto. 2307 Oakdale Road, Modesto, CA 209.846.0501 Www.facebook.com/rivetsgrill

*Fun fact: I have totally kissed the Blarney Stone.

PERFORMING A Time to Perform in March by Kaye Osborn

The process to choose a play begins many Gallo Center for months before the actual performances. A script is chosen, auditions are announced, show is cast and rehearsals begin. The director directs, the choreographer teaches the dances, and the musical director enhances the songs. Actors memorize their blocking, their words, their dances and lyrics. The show begins to have a flow. The performers gel, becoming a supportive family! Excited about performing for an audience. This is a normal evolution for any theatrical production. Lakewood Youth Theater, the experience is enriched with Deaf and Hard-of-hearing children! Sign language interpreters bridge the communication for these performers. CHEF Get Twisted Pig!

FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: See Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month

by Dana Johnson The Twisted Pig isn’t the latest dance craze, it isn’t a new barnyard reality show, and you don’t have to wear pigtails to get through the door unless you want to! Here in Modesto we have numerous unique and mouthworthy restaurants that thankfully are not major chains. My spoiled palate is addicted to the flavors and aromas that come from the kitchen where there is a chef as excited about preparing my meal as I am to devour it! Chef Ryan Breshears of Twisted Pig Bar & Grill aspires to his menu precisely in this same manner, like bacon to a frying pan! Chef Ryan is a Modesto native, married to Jennifer, with 2 sons Gabriel (13) and Aiden (8). As a family they enjoy going to Dry Creek Park to play Frisbee golf, bowling on Mc Henry, and fishing whenever possible. Jennifer is a waitress at a favorite Modesto breakfast spot, Old Mill Café. As I followed Chef into the kitchen, I heard some great old school music. He said it puts him in the groove! When I asked him if a picky customer (like me) had special menu request like pulled pork instead of turkey, how flexible would he be? He simply said, “I need to make people happy.” Outstanding, as I never react well when someone tells me “NO!”. I seem to turn into a 2 year old! Twisted Pig opened its doors in Jan. ’15. Owners Amber and Randy Rocha also are part owners in the Tap Room Pub & Grub restaurant that boasts its own success on Sylvan Ave in Modesto. Most of the times when I start to write my Chef View article it’s primarily about the amazing food. Twisted Pig has more than tasty food; a fantastic chef, warm & friendly owners, an accommodating general manager Cody, a smiling mixologist Brian behind the bar, it has Mo View’s own Michael Mangano, too. MJ is a part-time employee, logo designer, and Facebook manager, and he fits perfectly in this ensemble that is a collaborative culinary accomplishment with a Dana-licious outcome! Thanks MJ for the professional photos and your ever-awesome company! Rooster Bullets, Swine & Cheese, and Drunken Mussels and Duck Bacon, too!

No wonder some Pig is known as Twisted after delving into this one of a kind downright lip-smacking menu! Bacon & jalapeno deviled eggs, grilled bacon & cheese sandwich, sautéed mussels in a white wine, garlic butter sauce with tomatoes, green onions served with garlic bread, a #1 seller! If you are like me and having a hard time deciding what to try first, let your server surprise you! and mashed potatoes, and finally FRESH seasonal (not frozen or canned) yellow & green zucchini! All served with Chef Ryan’s remarkable bbq sauce from scratch. Found my tongue all twisted trying to taste every flavor and then my eyes rolled to the back of my head as I spooned into the cheesecake with its maple bourbon drizzle and candied bacon topping! So now you know what is on 20% of the menu, so go in sample the rest! Visit them on FB “Twisted Pig Bar & Grill”, order online for pickup, or cater a party up to 350 guests. The bar menu is full of inviting, and refreshing spirited cocktails not on any other menu, anywhere!

Modesto View’s signature question: Beatles or Stones? Chef Ryan instantly responded “Stones!” as his parents raised him right by taking him to a Rolling Stones concert when he was a kid. The weather is getting nicer and the nights are warmer and what should that mean to you? It means you should go out and experience some great live entertainment. Just about any day of the week there is something to do in and around Modesto and you would be wise to go out at least once a week. From Blue Monday(Barking Dog) or Metal Monday(Climax) to Great Local Acoustic Music at Deva or Open Mic at the Queen Bean every Sunday. You can always take the short drive down to Merced and see what is happening at the Partisan, up to Jamestown to catch a gig at the Gypsy Shack or up to Stockton where you can soon see live music once again on Yosemite St at the Blackwater Republic. If you look around you will find something fun to do every day of the week. Check out some of these great and varied events coming up in March all around the Valley. On the 3rd it is the March Poetry Night at the Queen Bean celebrating the written and spoken word (1st Tuesday of each month.) Nothing But Losers(2011 Metal) are always playing and March is no

different catch them on the 7th at Spinnakers, the 21st downtown Modesto for Lucky Fest(tons of Live Music/Dj’s and Comedy) and the 23rd at The Other Place. Triple D(2014 Blue Collar) rocks the night away at Nino’s on the 7th. Madie Boyd(2013 Americana) perform new material at the Queen Bean on the 14th with Little Mirrors, Buffalo Buffalo and Michael White. If you have not made it by the Prospect Theater treat yourself and bring some friends to one of these great shows: Ryan Russell Band with the Randy Mandy Band and Bethany Joseph on the 7th and/or Marirose Powell (2012 Americana) with Ann Kelly on the 28th. This is just a sampling of what is happening all around you don’t miss out on all the fun. Keep your eyes out for the return of Broken Toys (darkwave synth pop from Stockton) set to perform late April at the Gallo Center. They were one of the stand out bands of the mid/late 80’s and sound just as dynamic today. In December 2012 they released “the Cut of Memory’” 25th Anniversary Remaster Edition. The release party at the Empire Theater was sold out and was filmed for a

documentary which will be released soon. Keep an eye out for tickets to go on sale soon (I am sure this will be another sold out performance.) School of Rock - Music 101-The Art of the Promo Pack/Press Kit. The Promo Pack or Press Kit used to be a standard tool for any band/artist to get gigs and promote themselves but over the last decade with social networking and EPK (Electronic Press Kits) the art has been forgotten or lost. Even bands who have an EPK usually don’t use them properly and are often not very good. A good Promo Pack should have 3 songs (the best quality you have studio or live that represent who you are.) A couple photographs (high resolution especially if it is an EPK) one head shot or staged photo and a good live shot. A well written bio is also very important, include links to your websites and you tube page if you have one. Get a friend who is an aspiring journalism student to write a bio for you. If you have a logo make sure to include it for the use of flyers and other advertisement. Include a list of venues and or marquee bands you have performed with; this gives credibility to your band. Be honest about your achievements but don’t be shy about expounding on honors or accolades. Add any press clippings you might have throw them in to fill out your package. Be creative with the packaging from a DVD case to a Pee-Chee folder. I know that I will listen to a physical CD more closely and more often then a download (and of course you are going to sound much better on my car or home stereo then on some small computer speakers.) Now that you have your Promo Pack how are you going to use it? EPK’s are great to send out in mass email requests for gigs or when sending out press releases for upcoming tours or promoting bigger events or a CD Release. The physical Pack should be used more like a snipers riffle and less like a shotgun. Do a little research to find out what radio stations or newspapers(usually college) accept independent releases, send them out to larger venues or booking agents that you want to impress and set yourself aside from the average band. Remember you can always send your events listings in to be included in the ModView Calendar events@modeestoview.com. As always friends don’t let friends miss great shows.

INTER InterView with Matt Machado by Chris Murphy Roads are our lifeline. Our transportation network is our circulatory system. Our system is struggling, it is clogged and in need of repair. We need to find a super training and building program to put our region back in action and pumping at full spread. The good news is that we have a certified trainer that is putting us on the road to recovery and creating some roadway strength. Matt Machado is one of the up and coming stars in public works. He is bringing some great new thinking to the rebuilding of our arteries, the freeways, roads and streets that allow our goods and people to move freely. Matt completed his civil engineering degree at CSU Fresno and has an MBA from CSU Stanislaus and is now the Director of Public Works for the County of Stanislaus. ModestoView: What kind of grade would you give for the current status of our transportation network? Matt Machado: Our pavement condition index is a 55, that is on a scale of 0-100, so I guess we have an F. The State average is a 66, which also puts us way below the average. MV: How many miles of roadways are there in Stanislaus County? How many are in need of improvement? MM: We own and maintain 1500 miles of roads and 225 bridges. Our backlog of maintenance for just roads is $73 million that represents hundreds of miles of roads in desperate need of repair. MV: What do you think the biggest misconception is about the Public Works Department? MM: The primary misconception would apply to all government agencies, people think there is waste in government and that there is enough money if the job could be done right. I’ve been in local government for more than 20 years and I can tell

you that some of the hardest working and most brilliant people work in local government. Local government does indeed - do more with less. Unfortunately local government is running on fumes. MV: What is an example of doing something differently that will help improve our condition? MM: Information is king, we are organizing and making use of the data we have. Using technology like GIS, and pavement management tools to make the most out the little money we have. Additionally I think sharing this information and informing the public on everything we do and need to do, is critical. MV: What is your personal least favorite road? MM: How about my favorite road? I enjoy travelling Roselle between Mable and Sylvan, especially at peak hour, the City of Modesto has done an awesome job with those roundabouts.. It is surprising how much traffic can flow through those intersections. MV: What would change if we become a self-help county? MM: Currently the annual roadway maintenance deficient is $14 million. With a tax measure I would expect to cut that in

For more Modesto info: www.modestoview.com

half and also have funding to leverage state and federal dollars to build capital corridors such as the North County Corridor, Central County Corridor (SR132), and South County Corridor. MV: How can we get our county population to support the changes we need to make in our system? MM: We need to educate people on the need, both safety elements and goods movement / economy based portion and then educate them on the finance and funding side of the issue. The need is truly there and there is truly inadequate funding to do the work. MV: There is a flurry of construction and development lately, how have we managed to get these programs running so quickly? MM: In 2006 voters of California approved an infrastructure bond, within that bond measure was $1 billion to improve SR99. First priority was to widen SR99 to six lanes. Savings from that widening was used for additional improvements to SR99. Locally we were able to secure funds to deliver the Kiernan Interchange and the Pelandale Interchange reconstruction projects. Both projects have substantial components to improve SR99. MV: How did these recent projects get completed before our #1 strategic project of the cross county Highway 132? MM: SR132 is continually being worked on but has been complicated by a history of soil contaminants and misinformation by some members of the public. This project is critical to the safety and goods movement for our region. This project will be a reality, we must be diligent and patient with the process.

MV: What are the top 3 projects we need to do as soon as possible? MM: Our region has good north-south connectivity, what we lack is east-west connectivity. There are three corridors that are being developed and would go a long way to solving our east-west connectivity problems, they are the North County Corridor, the Central County Corridor (SR132) and the South County Corridor. MV: Are there any recent projects that you are particularly proud of? MM: Claribel Widening, from McHenry Avenue to Oakdale Road, is a great example of solving a problem. In the past we were averaging 16 accidents per year on this section of roadway, with a large amount of congestion leaving motorists with huge delays. Working together as a region we are building an expressway that will solve these problems and which extends our good work on Kiernan. This all adds value to the larger vision of the North County Corridor. Solving a problem today while planning for the future makes me feel like we have accomplished something good. MV: I know that you are an avid and accomplished motocross rider, what is something people don’t know about you? MM: I really enjoy the ocean, the constant movement and sound of the water, the vastness, and the memories of growing up and fishing with my dad. MV: What do you enjoy most about living in Modesto? MM: The people and the climate, oh and I love the downtown. MV: Describe your ideal day. MM: Early morning run, with an afternoon of backyard BBQ with friends and family.. Including some live music from my favorite local band. Third Party ;) MV: And our favorite question; Beatles or Stones? MM: Stones!

MV: What is the biggest risk you have taken so far, and has it paid off?

Inter Emily Kay Shrader by Brandlyn Brown

The Gallo Center of the Arts will be hosting Sister Act in its second national tour, March 26th & 27th. Brandilyn Brown from MV was very lucky to get to speak to Modesto native Emily Kay Shrader, about starting small but making it big and coming back home to perform at our great local arts center as Sister Mary Roberts. MV: What is your favorite part about playing Sister Mary Roberts in Sister Act? ES: To experience her character arch night after night is exhilarating and fun. I think I can relate to her because she’s kind of shy and quiet in the beginning, and I have that side of my personality, but throughout the show she really discovers her voice, both literally and figuratively, and [she learns] that there might be more to life than what she’s been taught, and more she wants to explore.

MV: You got your start in Modesto with the YES Company. How did YES prepare you for your performance of Beth in Little Women (at Sierra Repertory Theater) and French in Grease (at Arizona Broadway Theater)? ES: Everything I learned about theater began with YES; technical aspects, safety precautions, how to respect each other as actors and people, working together on stage. I carried that with me through school and in future roles I got to play. MV: What is your dream role, and at what really intricate, interesting story through theater would you like to play the role? really groundbreaking songs. And also I love the Wizard of Oz, so that would be a ES: I have to be a little cliché, but Elphaba dream come true for me. As far as theaters, from Wicked! Just because it’s so epic and I The Paper Mill Play House in New Jersey. remember seeing Wicked for the first time They do a lot of shows that get transferred in San Francisco. I loved how strong of a to Broadway, and that excites me to be able character she is, and she gets to tell this to work on original work or a new show.

ES: Deciding to go to college in New York! Moving across the country was scary because I have never been that far away before. It was nerve-wracking, but I am very happy with the decision because it got me out of my comfort zone. Sometimes I would get homesick, but it led me to this point now, where I get to perform for a living, which is always what I wanted to do. MV: What advice would you give a teen to help him/her achieve their dream of acting? ES: You have to keep your eyes open and go after every option; every possibility. There is the YES Company, but also many other theaters in the area, and you can’t get discouraged. People who are far away from New York City think they are not as many opportunities but I think that isn’t true. Look into dance or acting classes at MJC. You can audition for many shows in the area. You just have to be adamant and persistent in finding them and giving it your all, and doing the best where you are

so that it will eventually lead you to where you want to be. MV: What is your favorite role so far and why?

Go Modesto !

ES: Sister Mary! Maybe because I’m playing it now, I don’t know! But I got to see [Sister Act] on Broadway with my parents, so it’s a little nostalgic. But I like playing a character who goes through such a transformation every night, it is really satisfying. I love singing her music and it doesn’t get old for me! MV: Beatles or Stones? ES: I definitely think I prefer the Beatles!

UNPLUGGED Renewal Weekend

by Tina Arnopole Driskill The second weekend in March sees a very special weekend hosted by Sunday Afternoons at CBS and Congregation Beth Shalom, as they present Jewish Renewal 101, a three-day program of music and mysticism held at 1705 Sherwood Ave. Jewish Renewal refers to an emerging movement which describes itself as “a worldwide, transdenominational movement grounded in Judaism’s prophetic and mystical traditions.” Jewish Renewal brings kabbalistic and Hasidic theory and practice into a non-Orthodox, egalitarian framework, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as neo-Hasidism. Like Hasidic Jews, Renewal Jews often add to traditional worship ecstatic practices such as meditation, chant and dance. In augmenting Jewish ritual, some Renewal Jews borrow freely and openly from Buddhism, Sufism and other faiths. The Jewish Renewal movement also incorporates social views such as feminism, environmentalism and pacifism. Cantorial soloist Jessica Leash has the inspirational voice of an angel with the power to soar above a thousand other singers. Throughout this weekend she will explore the world of Jewish Renewal music and share the beauty of inspirational and educational genres from around the world. All programs are open to the Modesto Community. Friday 3/6, 7 pm: Jessica will lead evening services in the Renewal style, including a related Drash (message). Saturday 3/7, 10 am: Jessica will co-lead morning services and a Torah discussion focused on Renewal approaches and content. A kiddish luncheon will follow at 11:30. Lunch reservations requested at 571-6060. Then at 1 pm: ‘Jewish Singing in 4 Easy Steps’: Jessica will lead a workshop for singers and non-singers alike. No experience needed - everyone will leave whistling a happy tune. Sunday 3/8, 3 pm: ‘Jewish Renewal - A Musical Portrait’: at the final concert of the Sunday Afternoons at CBS 2014-15 season, Jessica will feature a snapshot of the times in which Jewish Renewal came to be, some of its influences, and a taste of what Renewal music brings to contem-

porary Jewish life. She will perform a unique global mix of popular folk songs from the 60’s and 70’s, some gospel, Hassidic niggunim, a group of Yiddish songs, Shlomo Carlebach tunes, some call-and-response chants, and Reform Jewish tunes by Debbie Friedman. She will be accompanied by Fred Ross-Perry on guitar and Ken Mowrey on percussion. Information can be found at www.cbsmodesto.org and www. sundaysatcbs.com. Concert tickets can be purchased through the CBS website, from the CBS office, at 571-6060 on weekdays, or at the door. Modesto Unplugged presents its new Center Stage Unplugged concert series starting this month. Quality acoustic music in many different genres will be featured on Sunday evenings at Center Stage Conservatory, 948 11th St., starting at 6:30 PM. $10 admission for all concerts unless otherwise noted. March schedule: 3/8, Americana/rock groups KCDC and Midnight Mover; 3/15, accomplished songwriters Jackie Bristow and Anthony Edwards; 3/22, award-winning country/Americana outfit Frankie Boots & The County Line, and popular central valley outfit The Dustbowl Children. A different visual artist from the Modesto area will also have work on display at each showcase. Saturday 3/7 - folk and Americana tunes with locals Bethany Joseph, Randy Mandy Band and Ryan Russell. 8 PM at Prospect Theater, 1214 K St. $7. Saturday 3/21 - the MJC Community Orchestra will perform the music of Johann Sebastian Bach as part of a worldwide celebration of the composer’s 330th birthday. The orchestra will occupy the 10th St. Plaza starting at 11:30 am. Free event. Saturday 3/28 - Old-Time Barn and Contra Dance in downtown Merced. The event features a live old-time string band and caller. Leave those big foo-foo square dance dresses at home. This will be old school just like gramps used to do before electric guitars and indoor plumbing. No host bar. Live music. Free. 7-9pm at Legion Hall, 939 W Main St., Merced. . . s m r a h C y k c u L d n a Luck Pot o’ gold at the bottom a rainbow? Lucky lotto numbers? 3 green lights in a row?

Sometimes luck isn’t really luck. Sure, there is good old finding a quarter on the sidewalk, or picking good lotto numbers, but really, luck is what you do with the situation you have. And in that regard Modesto is really lucky. When it comes to food we are some of the luckiest even with the drought we are experiencing our food or fresh fruit or produce some of the best in the world. And that food makes it to our local restaurants where are local chefs take advantage of our lucky position in the culinary world. We are lucky when it comes to music we have so much talent in so many different areas from metal to acoustic to classic rock. Now we need to take our luck and make sure that we have an abundance of places to play and a downtown that is friendly to live music this will make sure our luck turns into a strong economy for both food dining music arts and entertainment. But most of all, it is more than Luck as we are giving. And giving brings luck. So how do we keep our luck, or how do we make our luck? Do you have things that you do that help your day workout do you have lucky things you do before you play guitar for certain things before you get in the car do you pick up pennies when it has the face up on the ground what helps you make your luck. We have asked many friends here in the Modesto area what are their lucky charms and traditions. Tell us yours at www.facebook.com/modestoview and www.modestoview.com

Poetry

Do You Feel Lucky, Punk? by Sam Pierstorff

Luck is a tightrope stretched between two trees: success and failure, and you have been standing under the shade of failure for years. Success seems impossibly far away, especially when luck sways violently in the breeze as past falls fly like fiery airplanes into your memories and keep you grounded. You have watched others cross— unskilled, undeserved, unlike you— but they made it, so now it’s your turn. Step slowly. There is no need to hurry. Let your body be flexible. Feel the line bend but not break beneath your bare feet as you set one foot in front of the other and begin your journey. Don’t look down. Don’t look back. Don’t stop moving forward.

If you pause even for a second, doubt will spider its way into the crowded attic of your mind to release its poison. You will be paralyzed. You will fail. Keep your head up, eyes focused, back straight as the brick walls you’ve stained so many times before with blood from your knuckles. Now reach out. Use your arms for balance. You’re almost there, almost to success. This is what it feels like to be lucky, you think, and that’s the moment when you realize nothing has been holding you up except yourself.

METAL Wrestling View

There is a long and rich heritage and history of Pro Wrestling in the city of Modesto. Roy Shires ran his “Big Time Wrestling” (A circuit of the NWA) through the “Uptown Arena” on the corner of 10th and G St throughout the late 60’s and the 1970’s and in the 1980’s the WWF made special appearances at local high school gyms that featured the superstars I watched on TV especially Hulk Hogan. In the Mid 2000’s Pro Wrestling Bushido re-lit the torch of Pro Wrestling in the fighting city of Modesto. Starting in 2006 at The Fat Cat Pro Wrestling Bushido starting booking Pro Wrestling shows that have included some of the biggest names in Pro Wrestling which has earned them spots all over Northern California including shows in Stockton and beyond including shows at The Crowslanding Fleamarket in Modesto and they have even started their own wrestling school which has produced local wrestlers Daniel Torch and Savanah Rhiley among others. This month is huge for PWB as they are taking part in the “King of the Indies”

by Mike Vanek

wrestling tournament during WRESTLEMANIA weekend at The Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in San Jose CA. The King of Indies founded by the late Rowland Alexander has featured some of the biggest names in Pro Wrestling including former WWE champ Daniel Bryan and is the ultimate launching pad for up and coming talent on the Independent wrestling scene. We recently spoke with King Of Indies Competitor Jeff Cobb and asked him what it meant to him to be a part of the tournament and he said, “It’s an honor and a privilege to be included in the KOI, it’s such an elite tournament and to be considered is a great honor”. The Crew in PWB will be back at the Fat Cat on March 8th where you can see Modesto’s own Bobby Hart take on King of Indies combatant Jeff Cobb and it is your opportunity to buy tickets to the epic tournament during Wrestlemania Weekend in San Jose. Tickets to the March 8th Fat Cat Wrestling show can be purchased at the club during daytime business hours or by visiting www.facebook.com/prowrestling.bushido for more info on Pro Wrestling Bushido!! That’s it for me this month... We’ll be back next month with more metal!!

Irish Traditions

You have heard all about it. You know you want to try it if you haven’t eaten it. Corned Beef & Cabbage is awesome. I really love it. Being a Murphy, it must be something in by genes, but I even eat it when it is not St. Patrick’s Day. You can get it on a regular basis at P. Wexford’s and we have a recipe here so you can try it yourself. Pretty easy actually. Place corned beef in large pot or Dutch oven and cover with water. Add the spice packet that came with the corned beef. Cover pot and bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Simmer approximately 50 minutes per pound or until tender. Add whole potatoes and carrots, and cook until the vegetables are almost tender. Add cabbage and cook for 15 more minutes. Remove meat and let rest 15 minutes. Place vegetables in a bowl and cover. Add as much broth (cooking liquid reserved in the Dutch oven or large pot) as you want. Slice meat across the grain. 3 pounds corned beef brisket with spice packet 10 small red potatoes 5 carrots, peeled and cut into 3-inch pieces 1 large head cabbage, cut into small wedges

URBAN

health West Nile will be worse in 2015.

Be prepared early. The drought will make the conditions for West Nile mosquitoes even worse this season. When it is dry, the mosquitoes that carry West Nile get more aggressive and find urban sources of water. Green standing water with algae and abandoned pools are the the absolute worst. Also, be on the lookout for places that might be a risk and notify the county and the mosquito abatement department if you see standing water or places that may need attention. We all have to look out for each other and stay well. If you see any places like this call the East Side Mosquito Abatement #209-522-4098 and let them know. http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/article11054219.html# http://www.stancounty.com/healthandsafety/west-nile-virus.shtm

Jae Havana The interview by Javier Lopez

Javier Lopez: Who is Jae Havana? Jae Havana: I’m a hip hop artist raised here in Modesto. I’m an average person who loves all types of music, adventures and sports. I’ve been blessed with the ability to write music and lyrics, which I’m grateful for. I love being creative as it allows me to express myself as an individual. JL: One of your favorite artist now? JH: Kendrick Lamar. He is a very creative artist that has the potential of becoming one of the greats. I really like his style, and respect his honesty. JL: What inspires you? JH: There is a lot of things that inspire me. My family, friends, fans, love, but it mostly comes from happiness. Whether it’s my happiness or someone else’s. At the end of the day we all just want to be happy. That’s why we work hard in order to better ourselves, or lives and the lives of people we care about. JL: Where did you first record for the first time ? JH: The first song I recorded was in my bedroom... well bathroom. When I first started I didn’t have the funding to purchase a lot of computer programs. In order for my vocals to have reverb, my friend Eddie Casino put the microphone in the bathroom and had me record in there. At that moment I realized this was the best way I could express myself as an individual and wasn’t scared of what others thought about my music and the topics. JL: How many music videos have you filmed and pick your top and why? JH: I’ve done three music videos and my favorite by far is “Love in a Revolution”. I love the video because it shows the different

stages of a unstable relationship. The director of the video, Sal Jimenez did a great job showing this. The video shows a couple go from the highest to lowest part of their relationship. It shows the cycle of love when it’s vulnerable at purest form. This cycle goes from the couple being happy, to sad, followed by them being upset with each other, to “working” things out and finally to the relationship being in an uncertain place. This uncertain place is where the couple isn’t sure if they’ll even have a future together, but are willing to give it another try only to end up in that same cycle once again. That’s why I titled the song “Love in a Revolution” because like a revolution, love comes with its ups and downs. Together you might rebel amongst each other, but you continue to fight to make the relationship work. JL: Are you working on new music? JH: Yes I am. I am currently working on an album tilted “If I Was King”. The album isn’t about being a “King” so to speak or someone of high stature. “If I Was King” is a state of mind doing what it takes to better yourself and the people around you. The concept of the album is based off the average person, one who works hard in pursuance of success. This is a person who is never given a fair chance or the opportunity to succeed. Instead of giving up, they make their own opportunities, through hard work. The songs on the album tell stories of this person’s journey towards success. These are stories that illustrate life’s obstacles, pain and facing adversity. They also tell stories of growth, celebrating life, accomplishing goals, love, family, friendship, courage, perseverance and strength. “If I Was King” will be available this summer on iTunes, GooglePlay, Amazon Music etc. You can check out my music or network with me at - Jae Havana www.jaehavana.com www.facebook.com/jaehavana www.twitter.com/jaehavana www.youtube.com/jaehavanatv www.myspace.com/jaehavana

AUTHOR “Lágrimas”

“There is a sacredness in tears. They are not a mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition and of unspeakable love.” Washington Irving We have used Tear Catchers since before Christ’s time to collect our tears, marking life’s rites of passage. In Psalm 56:8 of the Old Testament, David prays to God, “Thou tellest my wanderings, put thou my tears in Thy bottle; are they not in Thy Book?” Mourners in Roman times filled small glass bottles or cups with tears and placed them in burial tombs. In the Victorian Era, mourners collected their tears in bottles with special stoppers that allowed the tears to evaporate. Once the tears disappeared, the mourning was over. During the American Civil War, women cried into tear bottles and saved them until their men returned from war. Today, we give them and use them at times of loss and bereavement, weddings, births, graduations, anniversaries, and moments of sorrow and joy. Through the years, I have collected tears for my mother, my father, my best friend, and my little brother, as well as for lost loves and lost dreams. The older we grow, the more bottles there are to fill.

ALL AGES Hi Everyone

by Leia Johnson

Are you a high school/college student interested in traveling to other countries as a young ambassador? If not, maybe you are a person that enjoys learning about Rocks and Minerals? Or maybe what you enjoy is supporting live local theatre? Whatever your interest, March is a lucky month for you! Modesto Sister Cities is currently taking applications for two of their youth exchanges this summer - Laval, France and Kurume, Japan. The one for France is open to high school and college students. You will go to France for two weeks (end of June, beginning of July) and then return and host a French student for two weeks (mid-July). The trip to Japan is for high school students and is 10 days long, travelling mid-July. The Japanese students will then return to visit beginning the first week of August. In this program you will live with a family in a foreign country with their young adult. Later in the summer, that young adult will stay in Modesto, living with you and your family. It is a wonderful way to make new bonds and memories. You don’t need to speak the language, you just need to be willing to experience a new culture. If you think that this could appeal to you, the cost of the program including airfare is ($1,400 estimate) and pocket money. Visit www. modestosistercities.com for more information and application. For questions on the Kurume exchange, call Nancy Holmes at (209) 765-9290. For questions about Laval call John Mensinger (209) 602-4515. Email MSCI at modesto.MSCI@gmail.com. Keep in mind that space is limited and priority is

FIT Chasing Shadows By Efren Martinez

On Sunday, March 29th, many of you will be chasing shadows at The Modesto Marathon and your Quake DJ in fitness will be there once again to send you off with some energetic beats as well as welcome you back at the finish line. The Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon (SAMM) is the largest sporting event in our city and regardless if you are a runner or not, there is a great deal of family-friendly excitement that takes place every year. For me it is not only the energy that flows from my woofers and tweeters at the start line, but also the emotional impact it has on me as a runner. Last year a few of you struggled with those final

steps across the finish line. As a tri-athlete I know your pain well, and when a runner approached me in a daze, I didn’t think twice to spring out of my chair to catch his fall. Within the last 5 years of me being your Entertainer and Emcee, I’ve seen and learned a great deal of wonderful things as our marathon has grown. Just recently, I asked a few fellow runners what they enjoyed most about The Modesto Marathon. For 72-year-old JC Cox, “The most exciting experience is at the start with all the contestants crossing the start line and the crowd cheering us on followed by hearing our names announced as we cross the finish line.” This year JC will be attending the marathon not as a runner, but as a volunteer bike monitor. For 35-year-old Jamie Loftis, her favorite thing about the SAMM is the support of

her fellow runners. “There is such a high comradery between the competitors. It is less of a competition and more of a system of people working with you to better yourself. Everyone is so friendly, from the runners to the bystanders; it creates a wonderful buzz of energy.” This year Jamie will give the full marathon another go, but with the 50 mile run (AR50) she has scheduled the following week, Jamie shared with me, “It would probably be a better decision to run the half marathon for the SAMM because I have such a huge race the next weekend. At this point I am waging a war between what is a smart decision and what would be a blow to my pride.” For 39-year-old Marty Bicek, he loves the flat, fast course with the one little hill known to us runners as Mount Modesto, which is the Briggsmore bridge overpass. Marty went on to tell me, “The organization of this event is top-notch and [it’s] put together nicely. Everyone is friendly and willing to help. The pace runners give

everyone an idea as to where they should be on their times. The live music out on the course is great too, because it gets our mind off what our body is going through.” Marathon Tips: Start to hydrate with water 3 days prior to race day. Recovery is key! Don’t run for at least 3 days prior to your race. The morning of the race, keep your muscles clothed and warm until the start. As your Modesto View fitness editor, my best advice is to have a positive attitude for your race. Trust in your training, you so got this race! Enjoy the moment and have a smile on your face as you run under me, the DJ, at the start line. I’ll be there to greet you with open arms as your announcer when you come back. Have a good safe and fun run! I’m proud of you!

ner’s Mind” is an important concept. It can be applied to any art form, music, cooking and sewing, etc. The idea is to give up feeling that you know everything already. The mind of a beginner comes from not knowing, and is like an empty, receptive cup. Learning is easier because the mind is open and empty enough to see, listen and feel more deeply. Returning to “Beginner’s Mind” is a good idea. No matter how long you’ve been studying your art, no matter how much you know, retaining some of this mind set makes a difference in your progress. Even though you may have done, seen or heard things countless times, if you experience it as if it was your first time you may discover something new and significant that otherwise would have escaped you. It’s a change in attitude that can give you a feeling of renewed hope and curiosity. But it’s not always easy to be a beginner either. Actually it takes courage. Sometimes

studying T’ai Chi for a long time. Recently I signed up for an introduction to Watercolor Painting. I struggled with the simple task how to mix my color with water to obtain just the right value and then create slightly darker shades of the same color. When I failed doing the assignment the teacher suggested to try again. At first I was frustrated. Then I remembered that I was a beginner and if I couldn’t make a mistake I wouldn’t be able to learn at all. Once I changed my attitude I could easily do the assignment. The saying “ You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” sums it up. Most people take pride in what they know and what they learnt. But one can get stuck there. That makes the “Beginner’s Mind” refreshing and desirable. It makes you feel that you are a young dog again that can learn new tricks. BARGAIN The Simple Joys Words and Photos by Monica Barber

Waiting on the world to change is as much fun as watching paint drying, but on this lovely pre-spring morning I catch my breath. After witnessing the flowers start to open up between the mist and grey this morning, I know my waiting isn’t entirely in vain. Some believe that luck will guide your way in life and others know that hard work is rewarding. Well, Ms. M finds herself to be luckier than a cat with nine lives but she rarely relies solely upon that luck to help her way in the world or with her wallet. And my suggestion is that you don’t either. Here’s a few ways to make the best of your luck with your wallet.
