As a Murphy, March, and St. Patrick’s Day in particular, is one of our favorite times of the year. Why you ask? Because everyone is honorary Irish and a Murphy for a day and that means we are all family. That is what we have here at ModestoView with our ViewCrew and our amazing Modesto friends. We are so glad you are here, so glad you read ModestoView and we appreciate this conversation we have all year long. I, and my family of Murphy Girls toast and raise a pint to you all. We hope to see you at Murphy’s Pub at Luckyfest on the 12th and at P. Wexford’s on the 17th during this special month. We celebrate our community heritage and our relationships. Erin Go Bragh. This year is going abnormally fast. Mardi Gras was early, February whizzed by and now it is March. Not only that, Before you can say St. Patrick’s Day, it will be Spring Break the last week of the month. So that is why this “Spring in to Action” issue is so important as we all get fit for the Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon and we pack up the family truckster for spring break vacations. So many things to do, so many places to see and so many people to meet around the greater Modesto Area. Plus the hills around Modesto are an emerald Irish green and it feels like Ireland for Spring Break. We have a new View starting this month as we explore our local history. We need to know our own history. We have to know why our

area is special and learn about the cool things that happened here and some of the places that are still here today to see. This month we find LaGrange and each month we will celebrate our authenticity, our reason for being, the real things that make the BRAND of what and who Modesto is. Who we are is the foundation what we say to the rest of the world. It is real, it is fun, it is exciting and the more we know about who we are and where we come from, the more civic pride we will create. That is why I started ModestoView 18 years ago, to celebrate our city and “Serve Civic Pride Daily”. That is our mission pure and simple. Oh yeah, and have a blast doing it. From the Gold Rush, to our agriculture and wine, to the birth of Rockabilly and as the intergalactic home of American Graffiti we have a lot to celebrate. This is who we are. Let’s fly our flag. This issue would not be in your hands if it weren’t for the fabulous local businesses that advertise here. These are not just advertisers, they are our partners. This is like a race team and we are all working together to make sure it all works. They power our magazine and we power them with out amazing readers that shop local. Margie Butler and Paul Espinzoa formed Golden Bough in January of 1980. They perform traditional music of the seven Celtic Nation. They are very popular and internationally known travelling to Europe every year. I got to know them very well as they always performed at Lakewood School, even teaching after-school penny whistle classes. Kathy Sierra joined them in April of 2001. They have released 30 recordings of Celtic and original music. Margie also is the director of the Central Valley Youth Ensemble. The children play harp, penny-whistle and guitar. This group entertains at senior facilities and churches. On March 6, Golden Bough will perform a 3:00 PM family friendly St. Patrick’s Day Concert here in Modesto at Congregation Beth Shalom. Interview with Golden Bough: internationally known Celtic band Margie Butler, Paul Espinoza and Kathy Sierra The band found it’s name from a series of magical and mythical books written by James Fraser. The author explains the miracle of the golden bough. It was believed that mistletoe was magical because when the sun would shine upon the mistletoe, the mistletoe would glow brilliantly. Supposedly, the sun got its power from mistletoe and mistletoe received it’s power from the sun. So, in 1980, after much discussion, it was decided they would be called Golden Bough. There was a time they toured endlessly, performing 250 gigs a year. They have been performing since the 70’s and have seen the music landscape change dramatically. RODEO TIME

Come early and stay late for the La Grange Rodeo. The Historic Town of La Grange requests your attendance on Rodeo Weekend. Party and eat Friday, and Saturday at the La Grange Saloon. Then watch a World Class Rodeo on Sunday April 3rd. Bring the family and visit the La Grange Museum, 1855 Catholic Church, 1858 IOOF Lodge Hall, 1875 School House, original 1852 Jail House, 1854 Adobe Stable, walk across the downtown river bridge and visit the oldest (1858) continuous operating mercantile store in Stanislaus County. Follow Modesto’s Yosemite Avenue, Highway 132 East passed Waterford for 15 miles to great fun!! La Grange is one of our counties best kept secrets. The town was one of our first County Seats in 1885 before going to Knights Ferry in 1862. There was a population of over 4,000 people. Gold mining started in La Grange in 1850 on the Tuolumne River at French Bar near the town. La Grange had every type of business (and I do mean every kind) going on in 1855. Gold was everywhere, even in the dirt streets where it can be found today. There are four types of gold mining. Panning by hand along the streams and rivers,

Hard rock mining by digging tunnels into the ground and into the hills. Then, there was the Hydraulic Water Monitors used to wash the hills away under great pressure. Finally, there was the Gold Dredgers. La Grange is the only mining community in the eleven western states to have had all four aspects of gold mining in its district. Wonderful history abounds with memories of the shootout, hangings, parties, dances, rodeo’s and annual homecoming events that was just a small part of a terrific mining town right in your back yard. We will see you Sunday, April 3rd. Do not forget to come up to La Grange every second Sunday, 7 am to 11 am for a great Miners Breakfast for only 6 gold nuggets ($6). Saddle up and join us for the fun.

They never look down, never admire the mature road you’ve become, your dark, poreless skin, your edges of soft grass and golden wheat fields. I am sorry that I have been with your friends— 5Ks, half-marathons, mud runs that left me feeling so dirty I’ve had to hose myself off at a gas station, but it’s always been you that I want so badly. I think near daily about it, what it will take to get me out there—next to you, on top of you, gliding along every curve, letting you wear me down, exhaust me until I am breathless on my knees, praying that you will let me finish.

March does take off with a bang this month. “Young at Art,” the annual student show opens at Mistlin Gallery, with a run to March 19, where it finishes with an artist reception and Awards Ceremony at 2:30 pm. Student art featured in several age categories and media, from preschool to High School. Open Studio maps are available March 1, at Mistlin Gallery, Carnegie Arts Center, Chartreuse Muse, The Artist Loft, Crow Trading, Oakdale Chamber of Commerce, Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau. Maps are $10, and Students 18 and under get in FREE with a map holder. Stanislaus Artist Open Studio now has 81 artists, at 43 locations. This year the raffle drawing for the 6 $200 gift certificates, good to spend at one of the studios of your choice on the tour, will be done by Art Walk Night in April, in advance of the tour, with time to plan your trip. More information on that next month. There are a few shows in progress from last month. Mary Bucknam Oil Paintings featured at McHenry Museum to March 6. Nadine Barret among artists featured at Still Smoking. “Welcome to the Pacific” featuring Artist Dean De Cocker at the Main Street Gallery, and “Missing Volumes” by Christian Hali at the Building Imagination Center, both CSUS galleries on Main Street in Turlock, run through March 24. Central Valley Art Festival will run two nights of pop up art show at Stanislaus State, March 4 and 5, 7 pm to Midnight. View for David Bienkowski’s 6 class course, March 10 to April 11. The Central California Art Showcase artists beware the ides of March, is the March 14 receiving date. March 4 is the announcement of acceptance, and the show will open at both the Mistlin Gallery and Carnegie Arts Center April 1 to May 27. Art Walk maps change this month, with a new listing of venues featuring local artists listed for the Downtown Modesto Third Thursday. The map will be good until September. Some changes being floated for Art Walk, and patrons and artists might want to weigh in with some suggestions. Our every month schedule is one of the few art communities that put and art walk on, but the frequency of our monthly get out downtown event might change. An “Art Alley” is proposed from J Street down to the Chartreuse Muse, that may include more murals to those walls, and pop up opportunities for artists to expand opportunities to show. As yet to be organized, including how to apply, fees if any, etc. This has been interactive event

for over a decade, so if a fan of art walk, patron, participating artist, get some feedback into the project. Always check out our downtown venues off the map, for the local artists, poets, musicians they may have on hand, during the monthly Third Thursday Outing. The “Art of Justice” art show and fundraiser for the Stani-

slaus Family Justice Center returns for another great show, where local artists are paired with the works of the centers younger student artists with a theme or message, to produce and inspired work of art donated to the fundraising effort. My pick this year involves the exercise of “The Monster in Me” with “hecka colors, hecka legs. Show will be staged at the Center on I Street, March 23. Over 77 works of art worked on this year.

Take a Beercation at 10East Kitchen & Taphouse BREW

With hubbub always happening in downtown Modesto, it’s easy to forget Turlock has a great little strip of it’s own, too! In a city not even a hop away (pun!) you can experience quite an array of beers accompanied with great food. 10East is the perfect spot to turn your spring break staycation into a beercation! Co-Owner and craft beer enthusiast Derek Walker took our tastebuds on a journey from Europe, to Southeast Asia and back again with so many stops along the way. With 30 beers on tap rotated frequently and even more options in bottles, you will want to return often so you don’t miss out on the chance to try new, unique selections. Their beverage menu has something for everyone. Yes, they are gurus in craft beer, but they also have unique cocktails (try the George Carlin!) as well as a great wine list. After trying the Indigeny Blackberry Cider, it was an immediate favorite. It wasn’t dry like ciders tend to be. It was very smooth and perfectly juicy! Give it a try with a shot of Jameson to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Along our beercation, we asked Derek some questions. MV: Why Turlock? DW: We knew that downtown Turlock would be a perfect fit for our concept. Dust Bowl’s success, only 1 block away from our location, helped open the door for true fans of craft beer in our community. We thought that had created a solid platform of which we could help build upon. Even 3 years ago when we opened our doors, craft locations in our region were few

and far between, so it was really cool to have two great places within walking distance of one another downtown. We have a great partnership down here that has become a destination for a lot of regional craft beer fans. MV: What got you into craft beer? DW: I know it sounds cliché, but it was a beer called “Pliny the Elder”. Up to that point I never cared for IPAs. That turned out to be a beneficial problem because, ironically, it is impossible to find Pliny anywhere near Turlock. I thought, “There must be something I could find locally that would compare.” I started drinking every IPA I could get my hands on trying to chase that dragon. My palate developed from there and it opened up an entire new world of beer for me. In a way, I think I try to put a lot of that experience into what I provide on my tap lists. I get excited when guests try something for the first time and it blows their mind. Especially seasoned craft beer aficionados. If you can impress them, you know you’re providing something very special. I always tell them, “Every time you walk in that door it should feel like Christmas because there’s something special on the menu you’ve never tried, or have only heard about. If that isn’t the case, then I’m not doing my job.” And I truly mean that. Last year alone we drove over 10,000 miles to pick up beer from breweries that don’t have regional distribution. Literally the only place you could get those beers would be to come

of these dishes for our guests without them breaking the bank to eat here. Since day one, we wanted to be sure that we were a place you could afford to go to a couple times a week instead of just a “Special Occasion” restaurant. to our taproom and enjoy them. Breweries like Societe, Beachwood BBQ, Double Mountain, Breakside, Crux Fermentation Project, just to name a few. It’s worth every single mile. MV: And why not pair good craft beer with food! DW: That was the most important aspect to us. When you walk into our restaurant and look at the menu, you don’t see a lot of standard fare you would find at similar locations. We almost want you to feel a bit out of your comfort zone by ordering something you’ve never tried before. Technically, we are a “Gastropub”, but I think we take it a bit further than that. Our main goal has always been to provide originality in all aspects of what we do, and I think our menu is our crowning achievement. We travel to a lot of large metro areas across the country that are at the forefront of the culinary industry in order to develop our menus. We try a lot of new things and think to ourselves, how do we bring this back to Turlock and effectively re-create it. A few of those dishes we currently have on the menu are our Shrimp & Grits, Mojo Chicken, and Duck Poutine (Brandi’s note: we didn’t try the duck.) What’s great is that we can provide all

MV: Beatles or Stones? DW: Stones! What did we try aside from the mojito chicken and the shrimp & grits? The Total Pig burger, the wood fired Thai Chicken Pizza on glutenfree crust, chicken and waffles with Crystal hot sauce and maple syrup, and fries drenched in a Habanero Sculpin IPA cheese sauce. Vegan friends: they have a delightful Thai dish made with Gardien, which is a soy chicken substitute that had Mr. Mitchell fooled that it was actually chicken! We loved everything we tried! Of the 12 beers we sampled, the Rip Current smoked dopplebock “Delaminator” and the Societe Brewing Co IPA “The Apprentice” were our favorites. The bartenders, who are all Cicerone Beer Servers (it’s like a wine sommelier, but for beer!), are all perfectly trained to take you on a beercation too, so come find your new favorite beer, and share it with us!

PERFORMANCE A Time to Perform in March by Kaye Osborn There is nothing more rewarding than directing and producing a musical with young performers. The actors in the Lakewood production of Sleepy Hollow have rehearsed with enthusiasm, energy and vibrancy. I am so very proud of this year’s show. We would love to see you in the audience. I also had the opportunity to meet with Leslie Larson of Central West Ballet. If you haven’t seen CWB dancers, catch them this month when they perform Rat Pack in Revue. Once upon a time there was a fanciful Lepre-

chaun (lol, it’s me!) that could smell the aromas of corned beef swirling in the air throughout all the land (in Modesto) following the path (on McHenry), to a quaint cottage looking establishment (P. Wexford’s Pub!) to satisfy more than a whim, (a major St. Patrick’s Day Party experience!), where everyone is Irish (at least for a day!) Step into the folktale and let the shenanigans begin! Imagine the smile upon my face when asked; Do you want to “Get Lucky”, “Kilt It”, and encounter a “Dublin Donkey”? Yes, yes, and yes! Blushing, these are some of the specialty cocktails on the bar menu at P. Wexford’s Pub for festive St. Patty’s Day season. On March 17th you will also find green beer, Guinness Girls, Irish whiskey and beer reps doing promotional giveaways all day long! The doors open at 11am for this 14-hour bright green extravaganza! Music starts a 2pm. 2 bands and 2 DJ’s outside, and Rattle & Hum will be playing inside! $10 cover charge starts at 2pm and increases through the night, so get there early! P. “So an Irish man walks out of a bar”; it’s been a long standing joke since 1892. Being halfIrish I’ve heard them all, but being half-Irish I also know a thing or two about whiskey, Irish whiskey specifically. What does it take to be considered an Irish whiskey you ask? Three things, it has to be 80 proof, it has to be aged a minimum of 3 years, and you guessed it; it must be made in Ireland. It’s beginning to look a lot like MUMfest! Our annual acoustic festival is still a month away, but this being the 5th anniversary event, we’re taking the entire month of April to showcase the wide range of sounds we enjoy curating. We have even partnered with a few of our favorite regional presenters to make their April happenings part of our fest. This year is so big that it’s going to take two columns to preview all the Modesto Unplugged Music Festival has to offer. Our opening night party on Saturday 4/2 will take place in newly opened venue The Portal, a converted warehouse space at 1324 Coldwell Ave. across from MJC. The popular foothill family band Faux Renwah are headlining the evening, performing old-time and Gold Rushera songs. The fun starts at 7 PM, with $15 admission. Sunday afternoon 4/3, one of the brightest young bluegrass stars in California, AJ Lee, will headline a showcase at Center Stage Conservatory, on the lower level of the City Center building, 948 11th St. AJ recently won her 6th title as Best Female Vocalist at the Northern California Bluegrass Awards. ARCHITECTURE Modesto Landmarks By Barrett Lipomi

March is often the month where seasons start to change in Modesto and our residents get outdoors to enjoy all that our town has to offer. So I thought this would be a great month to encourage you to get out and explore the amazing historic buildings and sites in Modesto. Did you know that the City has designated 59 Landmark Preservation Sites? Several of them you would likely recognize; the McHenry Mansion or the former downtown post office for example. However, there are numerous other historic sites and structures that have likely gone unnoticed by many. Of the 59 landmarks in Modesto the majority of them are within downtown and the Graceada Park neighborhood. This makes for an amazing opportunity to bike or walk these historic neighborhoods and take in wonderful examples of early 20th century architecture. In fact, the Modesto Art Museum has hosted guided tours through these neighborhoods and currently has self-guided tours available to download for free online at: http://modestoartmuseum.org/programs/modesto-architectureguides/. Ten of Modesto’s landmarks date back to the nineteenth century. One of my favorite surviving buildings from this era is the former Modesto News Herald Building at 726 10th street. This rectangular cut-stone building was built in 1894 and is Modesto’s oldest commercial structure still housing a business. Another landmark from the nineteenth century that you may have passed by and not noticed is the Turner Hitching post which dates back to 1871. Take a walk down 14th street between K and L streets and see if you can find it. As you walk through the Graceada Park

neighborhood, be sure to visit the park itself. Graceada Park, which was donated in 1914, is a city landmark and was designed by John McLaren, who was also the designer of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Graceada Park has a tree of such significance that it too has been designated a landmark. The Bunya Bunya tree located on the southeastern side of the park rises nearly 120’ tall and was a gift from the Native Sons of the Golden West in 1916. There is an amazing history housed in each one of these great community landmarks. I encourage you walk around downtown and through our historic neighborhoods and take in these wonderful structures and sites. Most of the landmarks are designated with a special tile, so get out there and see how many you can discover. Post pictures of your discoveries on your social media sites and share with friends! MJC: Growing and Creating Opportunity

Dr. Jill Stearns Modesto is a college town. Yes it’s true. Modesto Junior College is one of the early locations of the Community College system. 61 Students were on the JC Campus in 1921 and today there are over 19,000. MJC was the place that set George Lucas on a path of higher education where he studied anthropology. Other notables include, Dot Jones, Ray Lankford, Jeff Moorad, Lindsay Pearce, Jeremy Renner and others. There are some amazing things happening at the campus, and under the leadership of MJC President Dr. Jill Stearns, the planning and organization of her team and their focus on student success and access is setting MJC up for a bright future. One of the most exciting projects is that MJC will be offering a 4 year program starting fall 2016. This pilot baccalaureate degree is a Bachelors of Respiratory Care that will be offered in the new state of the art Glacier Hall on the West Campus. This trend of being able to get a 4-year degree from our own local college could be a game changer for both MJC and Modesto. MJC is rich in sports, arts, academics and is a leading school for ag science. Let’s learn more about MJC and about Dr. Jill Stearns. Jill brings with her experience, leadership and a commitment to get things done. She has a Ph.D in Community College Leadership, Walden University, an M.S. in Instructional Technology, National University – San Diego, CA and a B.S. in Business Administration, California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo, CA. We wanted to find out what drives her to make MJC great. ModestoView: Why is MJC so valuable to a city like Modesto? Jill Stearns: MJC provides access to higher education for everyone. Through our dual enrollment programs, we have students earning college credit while in high school. In some cases we even have junior high school students successfully completing courses. We also have students that come to college late in life; fulfilling their dream of a degree after retiring from a successful career. MV: How important is the link between local business and the MJC programs? JS: Our connection with local employers is critical to ensure that our programs prepare students for today’s workforce. Each of our career technical education programs has an advisory committee comprised of local busi-

ness owners and representatives that guide our program development and revision. MV: There have been so many new projects and buildings established with the Measure E funds, what are some of the biggest accomplishments? JS: We are thrilled with the community support of Measure E that provided the opportunity to build new instructional spaces that will serve our community for many generations. The construction of the Ag Pavilion, Science Community Center, and Glacier Hall have forever changed the landscape of our West Campus and brought new opportunity for learning. I’m also very thankful for and proud of the renovation of our facilities that has been possible through Measure E. The Library & Learning Resource Center, Performing and Media Arts Center, Founders Hall, and Center for Advanced Technologies have benefited from massive renovation. Many more projects have focused on the infrastructure, mechanical systems, roads, and walkways that are not

nearly as exciting, but important elements of the physical campus. MV: What do you think is the biggest misconception about MJC? JS: The one that is shared by all community colleges –that we should not be the preferred choice of well-prepared students. MV: How can MJC make a more successful transition to a 4 –year university for many students? JS: Much has been accomplished in this area over the last several years. MJC has developed more than 20 associate degrees for transfer that align specifically with the CSU system allowing a student to complete an associate’s degree, then bachelor’s degree in 120 units. MJC is also working closely with CSU Stanislaus to develop guided pathways for students seeking transfer between our institutions. MV: How excited are you about the Bachelors in Respiratory Science degree and do you think

you will expand your 4-year offerings? JS: Being selected as one of the 15 pilot baccalaureate degree programs in California is a great vote of confidence in the outstanding work of the team at MJC. The fifteen colleges are working collaboratively to ensure success of the programs as a first step toward broader implementation of bachelor’s degree programs in community colleges. MV: ModestoView is very supportive of the arts, video, music, radio and journalism; is there a chance that these offerings will return to the MJC Campus? JS: MJC has a strong, vibrant, and varied arts program. Students can study dance, voice, instrumental music, guitar, digital music, theater, painting, ceramics, sculpture, drawing, and photography. While there is not a radio program or a journalism program at this time, MJC is keeping an eye on the changing world of mass communication and the types of courses that would prepare students to pursue careers in this arena. MV: How have you enjoyed becoming a part of the Modesto community? JS: This is an incredibly warm and welcoming community, one that is proud of MJC! MV: How should Modesto and the community do a better job connecting with MJC. JS: We’d love to see you on campus. Come take a class or enroll in a community education course. Shadowchase Running Club

This runner’s club meets almost every day of the week at various times to accommodate any busy schedule. The monthly social is usually on the 1st Thursday of the month, but in March will be meeting on the 10th. March’s meeting will include a special running exhibit that the historical and social committees have put together for the McHenry Museum. The 4.2-mile Virginia Corridor Trailway follows the old Tidewater Southern Railway line from Needham Avenue to Bangs Avenue. Dry Creek Trail is a 10.8 mile (out and back) trail that is good for all skill levels. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round, open from dawn until dusk. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on a leash. Frisbee golf is a fun side-venture if you’re out on this trail. There is parking near the start and end of the trail at Oakdale Rd & Clause Rd, if you’d like to drive to the park before your walk or ride.

Pickleball

Central Valley Pickleball started three years ago in Riverbank with 5 players, and has grown to 85! They play at Zerillo Park in Riverbank on Tuesdays, Thursday and Saturdays starting at 9am. They also have games in Turlock on Tuesday night and Thursday morning. The game is similar to tennis serving and returning balls over a net. The court size is about half the size of a tennis court requiring less mobility than tennis but players do get a good workout while playing. The game is played with a paddle and a wiffle ball. The best way to describe the game is “ping pong on steroids”. The public is invited to play. The Riverbank site request a $1 donation per play day to cover the cost of insurance, balls and portable nets. First time players do not need a paddle to play, paddles can be borrowed. The club attempts to group play by ability of the players. Our members agree once you have touched the paddle and played the game you are hooked! METAL March Local Band Showcase by Mike Vanek Last month we showcased some local bands and we are back this month to showcase a few more. By no means is this all the good bands in town, and we shall cover more in the future!! Next month we pay tribute to a true great in our scene that we lost way too soon Mycal Wayte the original vocalist for Burial Ground... CURSED is one of the most veteran bands in our scene and have been around for years as one version or another including a stint as Cursed A.D. Years ago. Cursed’s current lineup has been called by several local music industry heavyweights as the strongest in the history of the band. Anchored by bassist Roy Stanley, Cursed is a major player in the Nor Cal metal scene and they are one of the few bands in the scene that have established their name in the Nor Cal metal community. Cursed plays everywhere!! Whereever good shows happen in our scene and beyond you may find Cursed on a flyer on the wall, Check’em out!!!

STIGMURDER is another veteran of our scene that has pretty much stuck together through thick and thin!! With the same basic nucleus still intact after years and years of playing throughout the Nor Cal scene, they welcomed their new bass player “Topher” this past year. STIGMURDER has steamed ahead and is one of the most entertaining and high energy bands in our scene, dating all the way back to their early days at places like The Palm Gardens in Modesto! These guys bring the show every time and make the crowd part of the party!! If you haven’t been part of the STIGMURDER experience go see them in a bar near you!! FOREVER OBSCURED is one of the heaviest bands in our scene by far! Releasing their debut album last year and a music video to accompany it, Forever Obscured has been on a roll launching themselves on media like ITunes

Louis L’Amour once said that every writer writes from their own experience, and that has truly been my case. My father passed away when I was seven, and my mother never remarried. My brothers were both older, and had little time to spend with a seven-year-old. I was raised by my mother and two sisters, giving me a perspective of women being strong. While my mother did the best she could, we lived below the poverty level, and I became the quiet kid who sat in the back of the classroom and said little or nothing. I remember one of my grade school teachers telling my mother my biggest problem was that I was a daydreamer. Heck yeah! What was happening inside my head was vastly more interesting than what took place inside her classroom. I quickly developed the ability to create alternate worlds, with different times and locations that interested me. The rest was a matter of learning the mechanics of getting my thoughts onto paper. I was asked by my sister to accompany her best friend and co-worker to a Christmas party. My date turned out to be a lovely lady named Judy. It didn’t take long before I asked her to marry me, and she accepted. She had no idea her wedding vows were to love, cherish, and edit everything I write. I wrote my first serious novel as a Christmas present for her. It was a little story about a Comanche Indian, called Manhunter. I packaged the manuscript inside a box, wrapped it with pride, and placed it under the tree. After reading the story, Judy said she loved it…it made her cry. Then she handed it back and added, “It’s too short. Make it longer.” After getting over my hurt feelings, I discovered she was right. Since then, we have ten novels, mostly historical westerns with strong female characters, and two children’s

by Major Mitchell stories in print. We also have one screen play currently being considered as a possible movie by a producer. This is basically where life has taken us right now. I have no idea what I might try next. Judy will have to wait and see. Synopsis of his book The Don͂a: Leonida Flores arrived in California as a wife in an arranged marriage, then suddenly found herself having to take charge of a seventy-five square mile land grant. The rag-tag group of people she must care for consist of Indians, vaqueros, cowboys and a couple of saloon girls. Her story is one of honor and passion that draws a line between right and wrong, while adding a little romance and humor and a lot of action to spice the reading. The customs and traditions of the mining towns and Spanish ranchos mentioned are true to the time period in which this story takes place. ModestoView Publisher Named Grand Marshal The Modesto Kiwanis has named Chris Murphy, Grand Marshal of the 142nd Annual Modesto 4th of July Parade. The Modesto parade is one of the longest running annual celebrations west of the Mississippi River and this tradition reaches across the entire community. For the last 5 years, Chris has been the voice of the parade, announcing all of the floats and celebrating the Modestocana that makes our community special. The previous announcer was the long serving Modesto historian, veteran, Clamper, Shriner and all around great guy Al Menshew. BLUES Ready For Spring by Earl Matthews Hello everyone, I hope you are ready for spring because it is here already and that means it’s time to get yourself ready for some outdoor fun and music. Getting things kicked off this month every Thursday is Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood hosting their weekly open Blues Jam at Garlic Brothers in Stockton. Jeramy and the boys will be back again on the 4th for a second night at Garlic Brothers, as well. On the 5th the Turlock Community Theater welcomes Tommy Castro and the Painkillers and Elvin Bishop. Both Tommy and Elvin are mainstays of the San Francisco blues scene as well as international stars. This promises to be one of the best shows of the month. On the 10th The Jazzy Blue Review will be returning to Deva Cafe, hosted by Rob Hill Band and this month featuring Patty Davis and yours truly Big Earl Matthews from 7-10pm. On the 12th Roy Rogers and the Delta Rhythm

Kings will be up at Black Oak Casino. Roy is a true legend in his time and one of the best pickers around. Definitely worth the drive, admission is free. On the 13th Blues guitar slinger Shane Dwight will be right in our back yard at Moss Landing Inn at 3pm. Shane is a mainstay on the Blues festival circuit and puts on a great show. On the 20th Jeramy Norris will be out in the Stockton Delta on Moore’s Riverboat for an afternoon show starting at 2pm. On that very same day Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame will be at Nino’s in Modesto from 2pm-6pm. Finishing the month off will be a couple more shows from Rob Hill Band: on the 27th they will be at Deva Café for a Jazzy Blue Sunday Breakfast and then over at the Twisted Pig on the 31st from 7-10pm. Introducing Neighborhood Spotlights

Spring Fitness by Efren Martinez March into fitness or should I say “spin” into fitness. Last month we experienced many consecutive days of record high temperatures. As soon as that warm sunshine hit our faces, many of us had sudden urges to bring out our bicycles from the winter storage and hit the open road. But wait! It’s been months since you’ve gotten back in the saddle and your endurance conditioning might need a jumpstart after the long winter hibernation. Seriously, the last thing you want to have happen is that you get out somewhere in the foothills and you’re just too tired to ride back. I recommend that before you hit the open road to take part in a few spin classes at your local gym. Many gyms offer spin classes at different times and levels to accommodate your schedule as well as your level of fitness. Participating in a few spin classes prior to you hitting the open road will help you safely adjust back to the level you were at prior to your cycling winter

slumber. Ok, so now your back to your cycling level, what about your bike? Prior to taking your bike back out this Spring make sure you have it serviced at any one of our local bike shops. It’s been months since you last rode and I’d recommend getting your tires checked and a bicycle tuned-up. I’d also recommend that before you take your bicycle in for some general service you should wash it with some plain soap and water. Last year you tracked hundreds of miles on it without even washing it once. By now I’m sure you have a great deal of dried spillage from your Gatorade and sugary supplement drinks around your water bottle carriage, chainrings and pedals. Wash that goop off! Spring isn’t too far off friends. It’s going to be a great year for all cycling enthusiasts. Make sure you’re ready for whatever comes your way. Once again spring is here. I am telling everyone who does not live here how lovely our valley of blooming orchards is. Are you blooming too? Budding with new ideas? Feeling the chi? Ready to take on the year with new vigor? Branching out? The force of spring is something to be reckoned with. Suddenly with winter gone, there’s so much to do. I want to get to it all! The sheer smell of those almond blossoms is a knock out! For many, spring is the beginning of allergy season, posing a whole other challenge. The aroma of growth quickens my step. Amidst the good and the bad, the easy and the difficult, that life hands out, we all know the biggest challenge is to keep the “inner peace” Kung Pu Panda talk about. To find peace and inner strength, make sure your own wellbeing does not end up last on the “to do” list. How do you go about feeling well? I think it starts with awareness. Most often, it is pain and tension that brings attention to how we are doing physically and mentally. To be really strong and resilient you first have to be relaxed.

Set aside time for taking care of yourself. But like anything: consistency is key. We know that vitamins and supplements are good for us, but to see good results we have to take them every day. The same is true when we decide to take up exercising and meditation to reduce stress. To see results that are lasting you have to be consistent. Just dropping into a class once in a while won’t help. Forget your excuses. A couple hours weekly can be set aside for the quality of your life. It is really nice to pick up an exercise that helps us to relax our shoulders, like T’ai Chi or yoga. Using muscles that were not in use before can improve your posture and attitude. When you’re breathing better and feeling calmer, you can have a good time being you. It’s not about how fast we can get it all done. It’s about the quality and the joy. You only have this one body, this one mind. It can weak, rusty and sick if it is neglected. Make yourself a priority. The best reward is when you notice your own “blooming”. Go Downtown Modesto Ernie Bucio Annual Fundraiser Barking Dog Grill March 13th, 12pm-9pm This amazing one-day show raises funds for the MJC Ernie Bucio Music Scholarship. There is no cover, but a free will offering is taken. Over 15 bands, an indoor and an outdoor stage, raffles for awesome prizes. Ernie was devoted to his students and fellow musicians, and we stay devoted to him by investing back into music.

5th Annual Camp Jack Hazard Benefit Concert: Daughtry Friday March 25th at the Gallo Center of the Arts

This fundraising event helps the Jack and Buena Foundation provide summer camping experiences to hundreds of Central Valley youth at Camp Jack Hazard. Camp Jack Hazard is celebrating 91 years of providing safe, fun, character-based activities during the valley’s long hot summers to our kids. In conjunction with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Dr. Tammy Ma, Ph.D., an astrophysicist with LLNL, talking about Harnessing Fusion: Creating a Sun on Earth. She begins her talk at 2:30pm, followed by the film Star Trek Into Darkness (PG-13; 2013) at 3:30 p.m. LLNL swag will be given away and it’s lots of fun, but it’s also an amazing (and FREE) way to get cutting-edge science education (followed by a great film that ties in with the theme!).
