of the year. It is still green, the air is fresh and the Irish feeling permeates the air. As the global holiday of St. Patrick’s Day approaches (on a Saturday no less!), we are all Irish kin but then your realize how much is going on. Seriously, this is an action packed March. We have the Modesto Marathon, we have St. Patrick’s Day at P Wex, Luckyfest, we have Bunny Con and even spring break is happening this month and Easter is April Fools Day. Wow. But this month, we are wrapping this all up in delicious freshness and fitness. We are very excited that the Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market is opening on March 15. This is one of the earliest openings and the smell and taste of fresh market fruits, vegetables and treats awakes our senses. The farmer’s market is one

of my weekly activities all year long and my bicycle and basket are ready. Check out the PoetryView in elsewhere in this issue that was written by one of Sam Pierstorff ’s students about Opening Day at the Farmer’s Market. This month is all about trying something new and getting a fresh start in other ways. Some of our neighborhood associations like College Area Neighborhood and LaLoma Neighborhood are working on some exciting park renovations, rebuilding playgrounds and creating new fitness spaces for kids and adults alike. Besides the traditional playgrounds, there are innovative new ideas to repurpose tennis courts for a game called Futsal, a mini soccer game. Check out this great idea with our Interview on page 14 with Darrel Wilkins who wants to bring Futsal to town and engage a whole new group of people in our parks. Please make sure that you get involved with your local neighborhood association and be part of the group of people that fix and solve things in our community. It will make you feel awesome. Speaking of AWESOME, I want to recognize two people that are Modesto Champions. Local teacher Chris Guptill and firefighter Darin Jesberg are superstars. They have taken up the cause of making sure the trails and areas along our streams and rivers are litter, garbage and homeless free and are engaging the community to get in and make it happen. We celebrate them

But most of all, thanks to all of you that are out there creating events, hosting neighborhood meetings, starting new businesses and being the change that Modesto needs. That is why ModestoView is here, to celebrate all of you and help point the way for positive Modesto area living. Is this one of the best months or what? Well, Erin go Bragh, March is one of the most special times of the year if you are Irish. Heck, it is one of the best months no matter what you are. St. Patrick’s Day is one of the best days, and I have been lucky enough to experience this in Boston and New York in the past. But one thing is for sure, it is epic here in Modesto and we have two major festivals that are hall of fame. This year, St. Patrick’s Day is on a Saturday. This is amazing and you can start your day early at P. Wexford’s Pub at 3317 McHenry where they will have corned beef and cabbage and the traditional favorites and a big outdoor party

In Downtown Modesto, we have LuckyFest, where a whole city block is turned into an Irish city, complete with pubs, jail, hospital, pipe house, and comedy shops and even a wrestling rink and roller derby. Pretty much every kind of music will be featured and there is something for everyone. We hope you will stop by and check out Murphy’s Pub or some drink and some games. There will be big parties at the Twisted Pig, Devine Swine and the Fox Pub in downtown. Fox Pub on Page 8 To get ready, there will be a St. Paddy’s Pub crawl on the 10th.

Please join Darin and Chris at TRRP for Modesto RecFest on March 17. As spring is springing up all over Modesto, there are a couple of people that are really make sure that our city is getting better everyday. As Modesto, and other communities battle chronic homelessness, people in Modesto are standing up and being champions and making sure we don’t let our streams, rivers, and bike paths get overcome and are safe for people. Chris Guptill and Darin Jesberg are two of these champions. They have organized Dry Creek and Tuolumne River clean ups in the

recent years. This project is so very important and their efforts are to be commended. They have developed a really good network of volunteers that have taken hundreds of tones of garbage, shopping carts, encampments, and even drug paraphernalia from these waterways and trails. We hope that the city and county are making progress on homelessness in our region so that these acts of kindness become a rarer occurrence efforts can be focused elsewhere. It is all about making progress and

making people part of a bigger effort and our ModestoView congratulations go out to Chris and Darin and our community owes them a debt of gratitude. Are you ready for one of the leading qualifiers for the Boston Marathon happening right here in Modesto?

March 11 brings the Modesto Marathon where thousands of elite runners will join those doing their first Marathon on a fast flat course thought Modesto and the surrounding countryside. There is a pre race expo on the 10th at the Modesto Center Plaza, and then it is all action on Sunday morning. ModestoView will be there to show you the action as it happens, but better yet, come out and cheer these athletes as they run against each other and the clock. You can still register at www.modestomarathon.com Pre-reg ends on March 7. Online ends March 9. ART The Ides of March By Jim Christiansen Be Aware the Ides of March. That’s Art Walk night and the Stanislaus Artist Open Studio Preview show at Tri-Chromatic Gallery. Open Studio maps go on sale in March, for only $10, supporting the event and the 62 artists and 39 studios/gallery stops. Maps will be available at the Preview Show 1321 J Street, Mistlin Gallery, Chartreuse Muse and other locations on Art Walk. Students 18 and under get in free with a map holder, and there are 5 Purchase Prize art pieces to give away, so make sure you fill out the form to enter and win one of these original pieces from local artists. The Studio tour features many studios where artists create their art, and many artists will be grouped together. It pays to get a map early to plan your route as Studio locations all over the county from Turlock, to Modesto, Escalon, Riverbank on out to Oakdale. Map gives a visual sample and art description at each location, and includes painting, sculpture, ceramics, art jewelry, multi media and graphics, art photography, and more. Contact information in the map is useful all year to contact your local artists. Look for the Open Studio signs that help you find the studio location and come out and spend a weekend of art and friends. Map is your ticket both days, and hours 10 to 5, though some studios like mine open earlier, may extend hours

depending on visitors. Sue Siefkin is one of the artists on display in the Yosemite Renaissance Show at the Yosemite Art Gallery in Yosemite Valley. The show opened February 24 and continues to May 5 then goes on the road and will be on display at Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock in October. And if you are up in Sonora any second Saturday, that’s Art Night 5 to 9 pm, with art, music, and plenty of open venues downtown. March is a great time to fly kites, look up some kite patterns on youtube or pinterest as an art project. In case you want to be more down to earth, consider the Hands-on Clay classes at Chartreuse Muse starting March 1 to April 5. The Muse is also looking for entries to its Aspiring and Professional Artists Ermergence 2018 Summer group show. To apply, submit a portfolio of 10 to 20 images to the Chartreuse Muse by April 15. Great opportunity for artists first time showing at Chartreuse Muse, 918 Tenth Street. A shout out to David Schroeder and John Wynn, and the many photographers producing a great series of Events and displays

Party at the MAMA winning P. Wexford’s Pub! It’s the best little Irish pub, and it’s located right in the heart of Modesto! It has an impressive array of 25 taps, and serves the biggest variety of Irish beers in March. If you like the traditional green beer, yes, they have it, but if you are craving some good Irish beers, come get your Murphy’s, Guinness, Harp, or Smithwick’s. Ireland beers are coming right here to you for your leprechaunshenanicauns! The party starts at noon on March 17th, and goes all night. Rain or shine, this event is where you can celebrate, no matter who you are because everyone is Irish on March 17th! Although they serve corned beef and cabbage year-round, it’s the most popular dish at this event. (Or try the Irish Melt sandwich! Yum!) Other menu items available will be Shepherd’s Pie and bangers and mash. Music will start with Johnny & Kelly, and throughout the day you will also hear Blue Line, Cloak & Swagger and others, and DJ Tease will take over after dark. The Do Good Gold Rush

There is a little bit of history and story telling in every cocktail. This one has roots in the Irish legend of finding a leprechaun’s gold treasure at the end of the rainbow, or the Gold Rush in California that attracted many Irish. Whatever your story is, you will find your treasure at the end of a rainbow at the Fox Pub where our friendly proprietor Devry Thayer is mixing up this historic drink with the teamwork of our friends at Do Good Distillery. The Fox has become one of Modesto’s favorite pubs, located adjacent to the Gallo Center and features a good pub menu and is open late for post show enjoyment. It’s nice to have an Irish Pub in downtown Modesto. There are always the traditional favorites on at the bar and good pub grub, but you really need to try the DoGood Gold Rush and as Devry describes, “It’s a cold version of a hot toddy”. You have to like that.

Devry starts this tart and tasty drink with a house-made honey simple syrup. He blends in the DoGood Nighthawk Whiskey and some fresh squeezed lemon juice. After being shaken, bitters are added, and stirred in. A nice zested lemon peel graces the glass and you are ready to drink your treasure.

Youth Theater is ready to perform their musical. This year’s production will be Ducktails and Bobbysox showcasing the 1950’s. The actors have been hard at work memorizing their words, lyrics and dances. Ann Endsley is a beautiful person both inside and out. She has a heart to serve our Modesto community in as many ways as she possibly can. I spoke with her just long enough to briefly discuss her beautiful restaurant, Greens on Tenth. Though our conversation was short, she left a very strong impression on me and I went away knowing three very important things: 1. Eating clean and green is a really smart decision and everyone should consider a change with at least one meal per day. 2. Mrs. Endsley’s restaurant has plenty of healthy and delicious options that Modesto can choose from. 3. Most importantly, giving back to our own Modesto community is where love can be shown in the greatest fashion. Greens Restaurant is a beautifully quaint and cozy spot nestled right in the midst of downtown Modesto, California. Located at 953 10th Street, conveniently, it is only a hop, skip, and a jump away from Brendan Movie Theater. True to the restaurant name, Greens always serves fresh vegetables, organically grown. The food is rich in an abundance of heart health and heart health means everything to Mrs. Endsley. Make no mistake, the fact that she has a heart for health within the community is no accident. Her husband is retired physician, Dr. Steve Endsley. Dr. Endsley is the founder of Valley Heart. After his retirement, he and Anne began The Underground Kitchen, delivering healthy meals all over the Central Valley. Now, with the restaurant, everyone can stop by to taste the various menu options. They serve a lot of vegan, vegetarian food, while at the same time, they cook gluten free, (which is very rare for our area). Preparing that type of food has been one of the main missions at Greens. They have a desire to provide scrumptious meals for people who have special dietary needs. Provid-

ing meals with that in mind is no easy feat, so Mrs. Endsley makes it a point to use some of the local purveyors within our community. Even with the success of the restaurant, the main business for Greens comes from their catering side. Some of their clientele includes Gallo, our local hospitals, and large medical groups - serving over 1000 lunches per week. You may be wondering what makes Greens so successful after 8 years of business, (beginning with Mrs. Endsley’s organic farm)? It goes back to the list I began with. Every day, more and more people are re-thinking the food they are putting into their bodies and the quality of the food at Greens has been trusted for many years. Of course it helps that the meals are spectacular! Most importantly, there are so many entrees to choose from. There is the vegan made, Tomato Basil Soup, featuring caramelized onions. Then there is the White Mushroom Lasagna that is to die for. (To get an idea for yourself, just take a look at my favorite photographer, Michael (MJ) Mangano’s photos to see what I mean). All of the food at Greens is prepared by the Head Chef, Dwain Gullatt, (pictured here with Mrs. Endsley). Chef Dwain makes sure that every bite you take is savored! You should know, the restaurant serves all sorts of items in addition to the healthy alternatives. There is also a house favorite; Macaroni and Cheese! Chef Dwain pairs the macaroni with bacon in such a way that each bite will melt in your mouth! I left out the most important thing that Mrs.

Endsley does for our community: She believes in second chances in life and is known for hiring people that may have made a wrong decision along the way. She has another company, called Random Foods and during the summer months, this company helps 18 year olds who age out of the foster care system. This program helps the young men and women learn the skills they need to find employment. Truly, Ann Endsley has a great love for Modesto and our community as a whole. Her restaurant is a true representation of that fact and this is how she explained it to me, “My main goal is to bring clean, healthy, and delicious food to the community.” What she left out was the fact that she does all of that and more, with a gracious heart and a smile on her face. Ann Ensley is a great lady and you can feel it from the moment she greets you with her bright smile and open arms as she goes in for a long hug.

Opening Day at the Farmer’s Market It is the end of March, the wind is blowing frenziedly to push the last of the cold winter from the valley. It ripples the tents of the vendors and blows the long skirts of the housewives. The blossoms of the blooming Bradford Pears are swirling around me like a snowstorm. The scent of fresh bread from Edith’s permeates my senses as I purchase a bag of bagels. My son’s tiny toddler hands are heavy with ripe oranges, he squeals with delight the last of the season. His cornflower hair caught in the wind like a golden flag, proclaiming that spring has sprung. The man who runs the Dos Compadres stand greets us cheerfully as we fill our bags with fresh tamales. We will sit on the church steps and eat molotes for breakfast. I will buy a bouquet of pink dahlias from the friendly Mennonite woman. A hilarious thank-you card I once saw showed the back of a pair of jeans stained green. Accompanying text: “Muchos grassy-ass!” You’ll be thanking me in a similar way if you heed my advice and catch this month’s CBS concert with Gillian Grassie and her band. Gillian is one of my favorite harp singer/songwriters, influenced by the styles of Feist and Norah Jones. Her compositions challenge the conventions of her instrument and beckon listeners into intimate and sometimes poignant story-songs. Gillian has toured across the Americas, Europe, and Asia at performances ranging from a moving train in Mumbai, to a private gala for Prince Albert of Monaco, to a sold out-club in Siberia. Over at Moon & Sixpence, I’ll be presenting a pair of exciting concerts featuring a wide range of world-music styles. Saturday March 3 at 7:30 PM: Beaucoup Chapeaux re-imagines the antique melodies of Parisian bistros, Greek tavernas, Italian cirques, American jazz clubs and more; as well as sharing visionary new creations inspired by all of the above. Sunday March 18 at 2 PM: the always crowd-pleasing Dirty Cello, taking on blues, bluegrass, Celtic, classic rock and more, led by the vivacious crossover cellist Rebecca Roudman. It’s a high-energy spin on cello music like you’ve never quite heard it before. Both of these hot concerts are $20 general admission. presents ‘Baroque With A Twist.’ They’ll be taking a classic Bach piece and swapping out the violin for a saxophone, played by dynamic young soloist Amanda Heim. Other works by Bach and Handel are also on the menu. And Sunday afternoon March 25, my jazz-crooning friend Rebecca Leah Dias sings with Knight Sounds, specializing in big band era dance music. They’re also a nonprofit that donates all proceeds from performances to school music programs and scholarships for high school musicians. 3 PM in the Foster Family Theater. METAL Modesto’s Nude Medusa by Eve Oberlander Modesto’s Nude Medusa is back in action. They sound harder and heavier from when they first started a few years back. Their sound reminds me of stoner doom rock. They also have a sludge grunge sound, reminiscent of 1990’s alternative days. With band members Ericka on vocals and Potter on Drums, Dusty on Bass and Rammel on Lead Guitar you can check them out at this years Lucky Fest. Lucky Fest is 25 pubs built from the ground up and is the largest St. Paddy’s Pub Crawl in Northern California. It’s on March 17, from 6pm to 2am at Modesto’s Center Plaza. This is a 21 and over event that will have two Heavy Metal stages, how cool is that. There’s plenty of local metal music in our city. The Docks stage will feature Mind of a Machine, Nude Medusa, From Devastation, Sworn To The Black, Harlot Exiled, The Worst Fear, Bavmorda and Super Extra Special. The Lucky Fest Chicken Coop

Modesto’s Jimbo WarrGuitarist of 17TEN and The Venting Machine has a show coming up on April 14th at Modspot Event Center downtown on J st. The shows all ages with a $5 cover going to Children’s Crisis Center of Modesto. The Venting Machine has been kicking ass and secured a spot on Combat Records compilation CD, the first release in 30 years from the recently resurrected Thrash Metal label. FUTSOL – A Great New Idea

Soccer is in his blood. He has been playing soccer since he was young. Darrel’s teams have won a Section Championship, a State Cup, taken three teams to Europe. Modesto has three professional players from and two that have played for Darrel. He has been the Director of Coaching at the Ballistic United Soccer Club in Pleasanton (one of the best in Nor Cal). But Soccer is not his only passion, he grew up around local rock bands and Doug Robinett others were early friends and was part of the local music EDM dance scene presenting quality events. It is in his DNA to support the music and sport culture in Modesto, and that’s one of the reasons he is excited about Futsal. It is all about creating something fresh, doing something interesting and engaging a whole new part of our community. Sound interesting huh?. It does, so let’s meet Darrel Wilkins. ModestoView: Where did you grow up and when did you first play soccer? Darrel Wilkins: I grew up in Modesto, went to John Muir Elementary and then Roosevelt Jr High where I was Student Body President and then attended Davis High School where I had amazing coaches like Mr. Tubman and Dave de Hart. MV: What about game makes is so important to the global population? DW: You only need a ball. From the richest most developed countries to the poorest underdeveloped it’s the sport that can be played with just a ball. It’s the Church of All Nations MV: Soccer fields are huge. How and where can Futsal be played? DW: Soccer fields are 80x120. Futsal Courts are a minimum of 27 yards wide and a max of 45 yards. They are a minimum of 15 yards wide and 27 yards max wide. Futsal can be played on any court, tennis court, basketball court, roller hockey court, handball court or volleyball court. That’s another great point about Futsal Courts is they can be multi-use courts.

Parks would be relevant again offering a less expensive choice for youth sports ($600 per team, as many players on the team as the coach chooses for 8-10 games compared to MYSA $165 per player for 8 games), It reduces crime in neighborhoods because people would use the parks more and less crime would increase property values. It gets the community’s youth to learn life skills and health improved due to physical activities. Local companies like GoFresh may participate, which would help nutrition education. Graceada Park would give the West Side and Airport kids a better opportunity, simply due to location (Mary Grogan is more than 10 miles from the West or South Side, we will have a

Hispanic Outreach Coordinator which will help the league reach participants that other leagues may not. At Graceada, it is inexpensive to re-model a tennis court versus build a soccer field (and our city lacks funds), less maintenance, use less water, improves teamwork, increases academic performance and increases confidence and leadership through competition. More people can play futsal on a court than play tennis. It is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. MV: You are currently working with the College Area Neighborhood Association, how have they responded? DW: CANA has been great to work with. They were very interested from Day One and made me feel a part of the group and have been very supportive. Modesto City Councilperson Tony

Madrigal has been a guiding force. One of the City Council members asked me to help him and never followed through. I contacted Tony one time and he scheduled a meeting. After 20 minutes of meeting he had me in his car driving around Modesto to educate himself on possible locations, the sport, and the areas it may benefit most. He even called another Council member on speaker phone on that drive and had another Council member (Kristi Ah You) meet with me while they were at work (short 15 min. meeting) MV: What do you hope happens in our community parks if this is a success? DW: I hope more kids will be offered an opportunity to participate in a sport that has never been in our community. I hope it will do all of the things I’ve said above from giving kids another opportunity, to reducing crime and increasing property values, to leadership and confidence through confidence...simply put I hope it makes our community and parks a much better place and most important more fun...ultimately that’s what it’s all about FUN. MV: What excites you still about the arts and music scene here in Modesto? DW: There’s something for everyone, and there’s passion for it. It’s fun for everyone from kids to adults, creative, and motivating. I love the people just as much or more as the arts and music. MV: Describe your ideal day in Modesto. DW: This is a tough one. I haven’t really thought about this; great question, give me some time to think. MV: What is something about you that people may not know? DW: I was the Head Coach of the Men’s Soccer Team at MJC for 12 years. Soccer has been, is, and will always be my career and since I have adult epilepsy, I don’t drive, but still coach youth soccer in Dublin. That’s how much I love my career. I’ve taken three of my teams to Europe to play. MV: OK, our traditional question, Beatles or Stones? DW: Stones...Mick is the man.

The days are fresh and chilly and hopefully we get a lot of rain. March is when we really get out there exploring our own city, our region and even places far beyond. One of the best things about Modesto is the fresh produce in our stores and our restaurants. So exciting that the Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market is opening early this year on March 15 with the first Saturday market on St. Patrick’s Day. Bike and Run the Trail

One of the most fun things to do is ride, walk or run the trail system here in Modesto. We have Hetch Hetchy, the Virginia Corridor and the Mensinger Trail along Dry Creek. There are so many places to start and stop, eateries can be found along the Virginia and there are playgrounds and picnic areas. There are a couple of organized bike rides, pub crawls and brunch outings you can find in the ModestoView event calendar. There are also community clean up opportunities if you want to lend a hand.

Have you ever wondered what those funny baskets are in East LaLoma Park? Well wonder no more. These are the “holes” for Disc Golf. Equipment needed? Flying Disc. Cost to play? ZERO $. This is a great way to start a new sport. All you need is some practice, some accuracy and patience and soon you will be collecting the various disks to line up your target. Enjoy some history

There are several museums across the region to visit with your children that feature ongoing or special exhibits. The Great Valley Museum, McHenry Museum both in Modesto, The Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock, the Mistlin Gallery, the Oakdale Cowboy Museum and the Castle Air Force Museum in Atwater are just a few of them. It is always great to mix fun with education.

Want to camp locally?

Right in our own backyard is Caswell Memorial State Park, 250 Acres along the Stanislaus River just south of Ripon. You can spend a day Barbecuing and leisurely rafting along the river and then camp out for the night. You know that old saying, Modesto is on the way to everywhere? Well friends, it is true. Not only are we a great destination for visitors from around the world

Hike the mountains.

One of the all time great t-shirts comes from Yosemite Mountaineering School. “Go Climb a Rock” is one of the all time great slogans, and even made a James T Kirk appearance. The real reason this is so cool is that Modesto is home base for Royal Robbins. We lost Royal last year, but his legend lives on in the mountains of Yosemite and here in our community. A quick bike ride or walk to Camp 4 to see the Royal Robbins mural and will get you in the mood and a 2 hour drive will plant you at the base of some of the most beautiful granite walls in the world. Spend your day scrambling the rocks of Indian Caves, below the waterfalls or if you are really a pro, ascend the sheer walls in the spirit of Royal, Chuck Pratt and Tom Frost who scaled the Salathe Wall in 1961.

We have heard of underwater basket weaving, but this is amazing. Head over to San Jose to Uncle Buck’s Fish Bowl and Grill. At the time of writing this, the Black Panther is the number one grossing movie in Theatres and set box office records, proving once again Geek is Shiek. If you have not seen it yet make sure you catch a screening before too many spoilers are leaked. Comic Cons are popping up all over and it is

hard to decide which one to go to if you can not make it to all of them. You will not want to miss Grape City Con at Lodi Grape Festival Grounds March 31st. Grape City returns for the fourth year. MAMA Independent Musicians by Middagh Goodwin As an Independent Musician, you have to make your luck. What does that mean exactly? The days of management and record deals are over, and if you want to make your mark locally, regionally or hopefully Nationally, you have to make it happen yourself. Easier said than done, right? It will take effort and work on your part, but the rewards are much sweeter knowing you made things happen yourself. Make sure all your social media accounts are up to date and linked, make sure to add all shows as soon as they are confirmed and that your contact information is current(you would be surprised at how many people forget to update email and phone numbers.) These are tools to help you connect with fans, book shows and promote them when you have them. You do not need a full album, though you do need your music available to be listened to and shared. Just a couple of the best quality you can afford to begin. Create a video of one of the recordings or live performance to post and share. Have something to sell, even if it is just stickers, patches or buttons. Leave new fans with something to remember you by. You can always

use those recordings as incentives give out a download link when they buy a shirt. You can also use stickers or downloads as a bonus if you are playing a gig where you are expected to sell tickets. If you know what time you are performing at a Festival, write the time and stage down on a flyer for an upcoming gig or the back of a sticker and pass those out. Use your hometown draw to do show trades, book a show with a couple out of town bands that are willing to return the favor. Create a mailing list email or text; When you return to let’s say Sacramento to play a show, you send out a message to anyone that lives within an hour radius of the gig. It may take a few times, but you will be the draw on the bill soon enough. A quick internet search of the town you are playing will turn up contacts; submit to local newspapers calendars, and if you are lucky you will score an interview. All this helps grow your fanbase and standing with venues. He has been at it for over 40 years and is well worth the drive. If you are in more of a bay area mood you could head over to The Poor House Bistro in San Jose and check out Elvin Bishop. Elvin is blues royalty and can

be seen at some of the biggest blues festivals in the world, this is a great opportunity to see him in a more intimate setting. Lastly on the second you can find Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood at the 133 Club in Manteca, Jeramy is one of the best blues players around and can scratch your blues itch like no other. On the 4th head on over to Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz to see blues harp master Curtis Salgado. Curtis is a veteran player and has been featured on the Harmonica blowout tour several times. Also on the 4th is a personal favorite Harlis Sweetwater Band at the Powerhouse Pub in Folsom. Harlis is a firebrand blues rock guitar player with a killer horn section. His drive and passion has taken him far and wide in the past few years and his star is on the rise. On the 9th in Fresno you can try a little something different in the form of Big Sandy and the Fly Rite Boys. Big Sandy is one of the absolute best rockabilly artists active today, if you dig old school jump, you will go bananas for Big Sandy. Jumping ahead to the 15th you have another chance to see Jeramy Norris as Black Oak Casino in their brand new showroom. Jeramy specializes in keeping you dancing and having a good time. For St. Pattys day in the 17th you can check out the Poorhouse Millionaires in Santa Cruz at the Catalyst. I am told that SC goes a little crazy for this holiday so if you are going to make the trip try and make hotel reservations ahead of time. I am happy to tell you that you are going to have 2 chances to see Rob Hill Band this month. On the 21st Rob is delivering his Jazzy Blue music to Tressettis World Cafe for a fundraiser and on the 25th you can catch him and the band at Ralston’s Goat for Sunday Brunch. Rounding out the month I will be doing a now rare performance with Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame at Nino’s for their customer appreciation party and potluck. This show has been a yearly tradition for the past 4 years now and it is always a highlight show for us. I hope you all have a great month and I hope to see you out at a show.

The chill is still in the air but spring brings it’s promise, “you must remember spring”. I know its cold outside but plenty of offerings for music and arts in the Downtown. One of my favorite musicians that is local but has already won a Latin Grammy Award is Jamey Dubberly of Orquestra Dharma. He has produced and arranged a studio Project of Afro-Cuban Jazz with two albums released. The current release “La Clave del Gumbo” is a fusion of New Orleans brass & Soul Music with AfroCuban influences, Jazz and Salsa. In the Lineup for the gig March 20th at the Gallo Arts Center Modesto is: Carlos Caro - Cuban Percussionist, Omar Ledezma - percussion and Vocals,

Brian Andres - Drums, Charlie Gurke - Tenor Sax, Jamie Dubberly - Trombone, Fred Randolph - Bass, and Jason Moen - Piano. So come down March 20th and listen to some of the best Latin Jazz world music the Valley, or the world for that matter, has to offer. COMEDY ComedyView-Not your Granny’s Comedy Hello, hello, hello. Happy March. Is it winter? Is it spring? Why is it sunny but if I go out in flip-flops I end up with frostbite? What do leprechauns do the rest of the year? Questions, questions... Speaking of leprechauns and questions, this month’s interview is with Jeff Moreno Jr. a comic from Patterson. Jeff started as security at Tommy T’s Comedy Club in Pleasanton and eventually made his way onto the stage. He’s been going strong both performing and producing shows. Jeff talks about his Irish-Mexican heritage, and I think he might be a Mexi-chaun with magical powers. This month Rocco the cameraman and I chose Ralston’s Goat on 10th/J downtown for a quiet spot on a Sunday afternoon and found out this isn’t your granny’s Sunday Brunch. FIT Balls to the Wall by Efren Martinez

As a man in fitness, I’m always thinking about how I can live a healthy active lifestyle outside of my regular workout routines. Swim, Bike, Run is a great deal of fun and a must as a Tri-Athlete. Although if you’re looking to incorporate more ways of fitness in your daily life outside of your routine without calling it a workout, why not grab your big balls and give dodgeball a try. It’s not that hard to stage a dodgeball arena in your home if you have space and most likely you already have everything you need to make this happen with the neighbor’s kids and with your friends. Just recently I gave it a go since I

have plenty of balls and a threecar garage. The task was simple; I just parked all my vehicles in my driveway, removed all obstacles in my garage that would either break and or hamper my game. Then to add a cool effect I replaced all the overhead lights with blacklight bulbs and cages so the balls wouldn’t damage them. Being a Quake DJ it was actually pretty cool to be able to take it even a step farther and add some laser lights, a couple of fog machines and a sound system to rock the game with some Techno Music. Also, my garage is pretty big, I found that the bigger the balls, the better it is for that size of a dodgeball arena. Make no mistake, even a short game of dodgeball will take you to that cardio level super fast and keep you there for the entire game. It’s great fun and quite entertaining for the neighborhood kids and I. On another note, converting my garage to be a part-time Dodge Ball arena makes it also pretty exciting when we come home and drive our cars into the garage. I simply tell Alexa to “light it up” before entering our garage and my wife can’t help but giggle uncontrollably driving into a “Club Studio 54” style garage when she comes home from work. root beer floats in all of California. The A&W Drive in restaurant, on the corner of 14th and G Street is my go-to spot for ice cream and overall classic food. Upon entering, you are transported to the 1950’s, in the most authentic way possible. This is the best place to induce nostalgia and feel the true classic Modesto vibe (aka feel like you’re in American Graffiti). There’s a gigantic selection of ice cream, but my personal favorite is the classic root beer float especially since the root beer is brewed daily! Many people travel from all over to experience the quality of food and service of one of the oldest operating restaurants in the Stanislaus County. I highly recommend checking this place out if you haven’t already, it has truly made me feel closer to my town. And, they even have rollerskating carhops. Coming up in early March is an art show benefiting The Shire Community Space. This event is on March 3rd at ModSpot (1312 J Street) and costs only $5 for entry! Sunday, March 11th Bike and Brunch Party along the Virginia

Corridor. Meet up at the trail near Roseburg Square by 11 am. You will take a route along the trail and through some of Modesto’s Neighborhoods to finish at Redwood Cafe for 11:30 Brunch. The Ride will be approximately 6 miles one way, about 30 minutes so quite doable for just about everyone. Spend about 90 minutes eating brunch and catching up with old friends and getting to know new ones. Afterwards Bike back towards Downtown Modesto(maybe for a few drinks with those friends you just met.)

GO MODESTO The Shire presents TV Art Show 2 March 3rd 6 pm at ModSpot Event Center 1220 J St. in downtown Modesto. A year ago

the Shire hosted it’s most successful fundraiser the first TV Art show which showcased not only their works but some of the Modesto’s most promising young artists. It was the first time many of them showed or sold any of their art and Tristan and Vian(TV) first time organizing a show by themselves. Join these young artists and local musicians The Flowers, MP5, Salacious Wizard Cult and others in raising much-needed funds for the Shire Community Space. Support Modesto’s Art and Music.
