March is a magic month and the possibilities can take you in a lot of directions. First, the greater Modesto area and the foothills are flat out gorgeous, so you need to get out and explore as much as possible. We are super lucky that not only do we have more events and activities happening here locally, there are places nearby that you really need to go check out too. When I was a kid and got my first 10-speed in 1972, it opened up all of the possibilities to ride way out, to then exotic places like Knights Ferry, which seemed so far away at the time. Later on, when I was racing and riding 450 miles a week, Knights Ferry would be one of our regular ride routes where we would visit 3-4 times each week with a break at the General Store before returning to Modesto. It is super fun to showcase this historic place in the pages of ModestoView this month. But beyond our local beauty, if your are a Murphy, this is a special time as we all, celebrate the Irish in each and everyone of us to welcome St. Patrick’s Day and no matter where we all come from, there is a special unity we all feel on that day. We are fortunate to have a variety of places that take this seriously and make sure that we can all celebrate. My Murphy Girls remind me daily about how special good relationships are and family and

community all go hand in hand. Not only do we have our Irish celebrations here, other places places like Murphy’s and Sonora also celebrate and the calendar also brings us Mardi Gras where we all revel and party New Orleans style. Enjoy this issue as we showcase some of the really fun events and activities for St. Patrick’s and Mardi Gras. March is truly a fun month, where we still feel the spring and it feels like the year really kicks into gear. It seems like lots of things are getting in gear. ModestoView has been a champion for building a thriving downtown since we launched in 1997 and to have this be a place that brings our community together. A healthy downtown builds a healthy city. In many ways we have succeeded in introducing, or in some cases, reintroducing people to the downtown experience. You are seeing new restaurants like the locally owned, award winning and famous Food Fix opening on 11th St and the really cool new glamorous bar and beauty salon Blades and Bottles opening on 15th. Coming this month will also be the Modesto Grub Hubs food truck court as well, so this will be a tasty 2019. ModestoView is working hard to make sure that our community is filled with live music by local musicians with a new Music in the Plaza season coming soon, 3rd Thursday ArtWalk, PatioFest

Love my #MurphyGirls in June and Sampler 19 coming up this October. Teamwork is the key and working with the downtown businesses, City of Modesto and the Downtown Improvement District, really good things are happening. We encourage more real teamwork to really make big things happen. Living local, exploring our region, celebrating our locally-owned businesses and creating friendships on the patios, parks, and porches all across town is the way we build strong communities. I am so very thankful for you for reading and being a part of ModestoView each month, or each day in whatever way works for you. We make ModestoView available in mobile, on-line, social, and real live printed formats each month to help you learn more about Modesto and achieve our goal of “Serving Civic Pride Daily”. It has been a busy spring season for Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group and Middagh has really made a lot of things happen and his efforts and creativity really made this issue possible. Along with this, Middagh has been hard at work booking the Music in the Plaza, PatioFest, May the 4th and GraffitiCon and connecting us all together with our social media platforms and linking us to the new Plink ap, that will help the Modesto Area Music community. It is such a wonderful thing that St. Patrick’s Day falls on a weekend this year as it means two full days of celebration. Roman Wagner, proprietor of P. Wexford’s and the award winning St. Patrick’s Celebration is bringing the fun to Nino’s this year for a big Saturday bash. You gotta love it. We will celebrate with LuckyFest in downtown Modesto at 11th St. and the Center Plaza parking lot turn into an Irish City for the evening with bands, pubs, hospital, life sized foosball, wrestling, drag shows with so much more. Stop by Murphy’s Pub for a quick Jameson. On Sunday, it is the traditional St. Patrick’s Day as P Wexford’s opens early for Irish Breakfast, bagpipes and even Murphy’s on draft with bands and a party in the parking lot. This is a great green day in Modesto.

United Cerebral Palsy has had a center here for 30 years. UCP’s adult day centers in Modesto and Turlock work hard every day to create lives without limits for it’s members. Cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries, mobility injuries, autism and many other disabilities of other diagnosis can pause lives, but UCP is making sure those pauses are short. Only 20% of their members are affected by cerebral palsy; they assist anyone affected by mobility issues, regardless of the biological cause. Every day they hope to enrich the lives of their members by giving them independence--the kind you and I take for granted every day. Many of us have daily opportunities to make memories, make money, make new friends, and experience something new. Can you imagine NOT having those experiences every day? The staff at UCP strive to create stimulating environments to benefit members and encourage them to try something new. Aside from the day program center, and their job placement program, they

have a program called Expanding Horizons, which is devoted to (you guessed it!) expanding one’s horizons! By integrating something new in to the lives of their members, bridging the gap between mundane and exciting, makes every day an adventure. Recent trips include bowling, visiting parks and beaches, volunteering efforts, going to San Francisco and taking the ferry to Alcatraz, and even camping! One of their best fundraisers is coming up, their Sips and Treasures event on April 27th, 6pm at Vintage Gardens, 4342 Dale Rd, Modesto. You must be 21 to attend this event, as alcohol will be served, and tickets also include hors d’oeuvres,

silent auction (with really awesome items!) and live entertainment provided by the MAMA winners, the Patty Castillo Davis Band. Tickets are $40 in advance, $45 at the door. Independence, community integration, new experiences, sharing those experiences with others, a sense of self, a reliable income, an awareness of the community, and looking forward to daily life are what makes us human. The Haven Women’s Center does work that is literally life saving in the most dangerous times. Women need a safe place to get away and feel safe. MARATHON VIEW Pre-Marathon Training Tips By Thomas Lopez, Dusty Bottoms & Fuzio The Modesto Marathon is coming up. Let’s

make sure you are ready for the big day and you get the most out of your training. Here are a few great tips.

1. Start eating right days before the marathon. Your pre-race meal is important, but give your body a chance to properly nourish over more than just one day. Also, make that dinner pre-race meal an early one. Give your body a chance to digest it and turn it into fuel before the early morning comes. 2. Unless you’re trying to win, go out steady. It is easy to start out too quickly at the gun start. All the people and energy at the start of the Modesto Marathon is surreal, and easy to get caught up in. 26 miles is a long way. Mile 19-23 are the tough ones in this race. The road seems to go on forever and ever and your mind and body are going to challenge you. Save some gas in your tank for these particular miles. Race smart, and anticipate this being a hero to yourself! 3. Body chaffing is a frequent issue with runners who don’t prepare and it hurts! Get up early enough on race day and prepare for this. Body Glide, Squirrel Nut Butter, Desitin, and Vaseline are all good options. Guys, don’t forget to protect those nipples with bandaids! It’s still astonishing how many runners forget to do this, or think they won’t need it on race day. You want

that amazing finishing photo to show a smile on your face! 4. Although drinking lots of water the day before race day is recommended, don’t over do it. Nobody wants to tote the start line with a sloshy, bloated stomach. You learned how to properly hydrate during training, so don’t over think it. Too much fluid causes nausea and can ruin your race as quickly as being under hydrated. 5. Realize just getting to the start line was a journey very few have accomplished. The actual race is a reward, but you already did the hard part during training. Enjoy your reward, the people that surround you, and the people who supported you!

PERFORMANCE VIEW A Time to Perform in March It has finally come to ride into the sunset

for me with Lakewood Youth Theater. It has been an adventure filled with drama, laughter, dance, music, friendship, collaboration, creativity and of course, memories that will last a lifetime. The performers embraced Shakespeare, melodrama, Westerns, the 50’s, the 70’s, the 80’s, Robin Hood, Tom Sawyer, Peter Pan, Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland...so many shows over 24 years. The Lakewood School stage was embellished by constructive parents and teachers, Sets were painted and built to enhance every show, some so amazing like a life size pirate ship for Hook and Mini-Hook. It’s been so rewarding and amazing! Special gratitude to Charlie, Megan, Jerry, Marissa, Kate, Connie, Penny, Mary, Colton, David, Paul, Leslie, Chris, Becky, Abbey, Rick, Joanne, Rose, Karin, Julie, Bob, Karen, Lisa, Nancy, Ana, Alyssa, Melissa, Tim, Rene, Katie, the Lakewood staff, and the Lakewood community for all your support, love and friendship. diversity that exists in our community for our spring show entitled That’s Our Folks!, celebrating our differences in sharing stories from all over the world. The show will be performed at Davis High March 8-10 (tickets $7 student, $9 adult available at the door) and we will move to the Gallo Center for the Arts March 15 (tickets: www. galloarts.org $15-25). Beyer Drama will be performing “I Hate Shakespeare” a comedic rundown of Shakespeare’s most famous works with a modern twist. Performances will be Friday, March 15 at 6 pm and Saturday, March 16 at 1 pm and 6 pm. Tickets will be available at the door 30 minutes before the show begins. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults. Joseph Gregori High’s Drama department will present, by special permission from Musical Theater International, “Mamma Mia” with music and lyrics by Benny Andersson & Bjorn Ulvaeus, Book by Catherine Johnson. at 7 pm Feb. 28, March 1st, and March 2nd in the Multipurpose room. Tickets are $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for students. We will also have a $5.00 matinee show scheduled Friday at 2:30 pm, March 1st. The updated Broadway version features new songs, new characters, and a new plot, but retains the iconic charm and wonder of the original in melodies such as “In My Own Little Corner” and “The Prince is Giving a Ball.” The show opens March 1 and continues March 2, March 8, and 9. All performances begin at 7:30. The box office opens at 6:30 and the house at 7:00. Plenty of tickets are available at the door. MV: Do you need more volunteers and docents? How do people sign up for this? Are all ages welcome? GL: We always need volunteers & docents! We have applications and I can email one to anyone who would like to join our team. An interview takes place once we receive the application for people 16 and older. We would love to have a new generation of kids and young adults get involved.

MV: You have had some amazing curators and staff that have built amazing displays, tell us about these people? GL: Wayne Mathes has been at the Museum for over forty years and Laura Mesa has been with the Museum for more than 20. They have built the most amazing exhibits and are a wealth of knowledge that is so important with the McHenry Museum. Ask them anything and they will give you an answer.

Geri Lewis has a passion for Modesto’s

history and for helping Modesto’s McHenry Museum find a place in this modern world. I have worked with Geri for many years and she has been a big driver for our area’s non-profits. She decided that she could make a difference for our 42 year-old museum and open its’ doors to a new generation of visitors. I share her passion for the history of Modesto and I believe that it is even more relevant today than ever. I was a regular when it was the old Modesto Library that was built in 1912 and have many fond memories. It is important to attract millennials, young professionals and new families to Modesto and I really believe that people want to live in a place with authenticity and an interesting history. In this digital connected world, it is cool that the next generation likes the craft-made and hand-built quality in life, products and art, and the McHenry Museum is the perfect place to discover the origin of so many things in our community that we take for granted today. The challenge is, how do we get our next generation to be excited about history? ModestoView wants to help with this mission and we connected with Geri Lewis, the Executive Director of the McHenry Museum Historical Society that operates the Museum. Let’s meet Geri and learn about the McHenry Museum. ModestoView: What makes you so excited about Modesto’s history? Geri Lewis: Born and raised here Modesto, seeing the changes over the years makes the history the history more exciting. I have seen many businesses that have sustained during times when the economy was not good in our county, I have seen businesses fall, our community has a history of coming together for the good of the cause and helping in times of need. We have great traditions here, as well as great community events that bring us together to continue the heritage of our founding fathers.

MV: What do you think would mean the most to young people when they visit the Museum? GL: What Modesto and Stanislaus County have contributed to the agriculture industry, how deeply rooted some of our local families are, how many local companies have established industrial models in many different types of industries that are used throughout the United States and even the world.

MV: If you had to guess, what percent of the people that you talk to have been to the McHenry Museum? GL: 60%, and those folks only visited when they came for their 3rd grade class field trip. We need people to want to come back and see what’s new. MV: Do you believe that kids would be more interested in history, if it were shown to them? GL: Absolutely. I overhear conversations daily with children that ask the most detailed questions regarding the displays at the museum. Often, the children that come with their class field trip, bring their parents and grandparents back. MV: What are some of the misconceptions that people may have about the McHenry Museum? GL: Once they have visited they really don’t need to visit again. But the exhibits do change and updated with different artifacts, and the rotating exhibit changes as often as monthly at times. MV: What do you think the schools could to do celebrate Modesto history? GL: That would be a great partnership for the McHenry Museum to be involved with, absolutely!

MV: When people visit the Museum, what are some of the feeling that they share after visiting ? GL: The most expressed opinion is how beautiful the building itself is. The detailed architecture is amazing. We have so many different displays, many exhibits that are full of many artifacts from the Modesto area, people truly are unaware of that ever existed in our city. MV: What is the most important thing that people can do to support the McHenry Museum? GL: Membership to the Historical Society is a huge help. Also, sponsoring and attending events the McHenry Museum & Historical Society host throughout the year is helpful and telling your friends about the value of the museum. MV: I have rented the museum before, maybe you can share different ways that someone could use the McHenry Museum? GL: Family reunion, class reunions, company Christmas party, baby shower, weddings, service club meetings and so many more would be great reasons to use the Museum.

MV: If budget were no option, what would you do for or to the McHenry Museum? GL: We have some upgrade issue that need immediate attention including electrical, lighting, bathrooms and heating. MV: You have been at this position about a year, what have been some of your successes and some of your challenges? GL: We have implemented a marketing campaign, which includes never before rack cards to be handed out at hotels and businesses to raise awareness of the Museum. Challenges...homelessness, and we all know that story. MV: What do you love most about Modesto? GL: Everything! MV: The most important question, Beatles or Stones? GL: Beatles! Outdoor Dining at it’s best on the banks of the Stanislaus River After spending some time getting to know Knights Ferry, enjoy a comfortable, homemade meal or delicious drinks on the banks of the scenic and protected Stanislaus River at the River’s Edge Restaurant. I had the Wild Fire Burger made from Habanero aioli, pepper jack cheese, jalapenos, bacon, lettuce, tomato and onion. The burger was so big I could barely get my mouth around it. I also tasted the duck wings, which were surprisingly sweet, succulent and savory. The clam chowder was also a nice surprise. As for drinks, I sampled their Bloody Mary and hand-crafted beer from Blaker Brewery in Ceres, CA. Their menu includes dishes such as fish and chips, calamari and seared roasted salmon with Jasmine rice, sautéed spinach, white wine, butter and capers. New owners Dave and Debbie Tokar bring over 35 years of restaurant experience to this jewel on the river’s edge. Their team includes Wade Theriot and

Fridays and Saturdays The River’s Edge makes their special Prime Rib dinner that steak lovers are sure to enjoy. Choose from the 11 oz or 13 oz cut. The restaurant also features live, danceable music on Wednesdays and weekends by local and touring musicians. By far my favorite dining experience in the region is the celebrated Sunday Brunch at the River’s Edge. In fact, Sunday March 3 they will be presenting their Mardi Gras Sunday Brunch replete with the Zydeco music brought by the Blues Box Bayou band. The brunch starts at 9am and runs ‘til 2pm. It is $21.99 for

a sumptuous all-you-can-eat culinary extravaganza. While both inside and outside seating are available, I highly recommend taking a seat on the outside deck that overlooks the water! With homemade offerings that range from American to Italian, The River’s Edge has something everyone in your group can enjoy!

When I feel like getting away from the valley and want to take a break from the daily grind, I will either head west to the coast or I’ll head east to the foothills. Purchased recently by the Basmajian family, the General Store and Saloon serve as the social center for the town. Amy Basmajian Ehrlich is booking live musicians and bands to play at the Saloon and Grill on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons. The Knights Ferry General Store and Saloon boasts a stage “like home”. They encourage artists to “not be tied down to their performance but to indulge in the freedom to enjoy the show as much as their audience gets to,” says Amy. “In a nutshell, it’s good people coming together to support LIVE MUSIC amongst good food and a good time; all within the walls of history.” Basmajian Ehrlich states “We want to maintain the folklore not just in the store but also in the saloon and on it’s stage. There is a certain kind of magic within the walls as you stroll it’s slightly obscure layout. However, each time a musician or band takes stage it all comes together because it comes alive. It’s very special because its LIVE music in the making and that is the magic we want to support and share.” On Friday evenings throughout the month of March the Saloon features country artist Riley Smith and an occasional guest. A visit to Knights Ferry would not be complete without swinging by and checking out the River’s Edge Restaurant, located on the bank of the Stanislaus River. Recently renovated and now owned and managed by veteran restaurateurs Dave and Deb Tokar. Dine or drink inside or ask to be seated outside with a view of the Stanislaus River. Try one of their famous burgers or rib eye steaks. MARCH EVENTS CALENDAR Knight’s Ferry Saloon & Grill, Knights Ferry, CA, Walk next door to Miller’s Hall and have an ice cream from the Knights Ferry Creamery run by Heather Vortman, who may also be able to show you the museum (formerly the dance hall) upstairs. Next door to the Creamery, you’ll find the old post office (which was moved from the General Store during the restoration.) Many of the relics of the gold rush-the old mill, the covered bridge, the fire station--can still be seen in present day Knights Ferry. A makeshift iron jail or “drunk tank” that is over a century old resides to the east of the “center” of town--although this is (thankfully) no longer in use. The covered bridge, which has undergone a few renovations since its building, closed to automotive traffic in 1981 but the public is still welcome to cross the bridge on foot, bike or horse. Today Knights Ferry is a small tightknit community that varies its look depending on what time of year you visit. During the later fall months, as the Stanislaus River begins to drop, one can see the salmon run upstream as they molt. Nearly extinct in the early 1990’s, local park and recreation efforts have created environments in which the salmon now thrive. During the spring and summer months, the Stanislaus River swells and provides an excellent place for amateurs and locals to test their rafting skills and the popular Knights Ferry to Orange Blossom rafting run can see an influx of over 1,000 people per day on busy weekends.

CIVIL WAR REENACTMENT

The American Civil War Association, along with The Army Corps of Engineers present Civil War Days Saturday March 22 and Sunday March 23. Come out and celebrate the 156th anniversary of the construction of the longest covered bridge west of the Mississippi combined with a Civil War Reenactment with blazing cannons and all. “We are pleased to be custodians of this beautiful bridge and invite everyone to come share our excitement.,” states Duane Johnson, Stanislaus River Parks manager. “And with a live Civil War event on the same day – everyone who comes out with probably have a real blast.”. Visitors can watch the re-enactment of the Union and Confederate battles several times throughout the weekend. There are also ongoing living history demonstrations depicting the lives of soldiers, women and children during the Victorian Era and Civil War. March 8 is International Women’s Day-in some places a protest, in others it celebrates womanhood. Downtown Modesto will offer it’s part of the observance starting with an event held at the Barkin Dog on March 8 at 6 pm which will feature music, dance, poetry and theater. Donations for the Stanislaus County Commission for Women scholarship fund will be accepted in lieu of a gate fee. Deva Cafe will host a Haven Walk A Mile In Her Shoes Team Lo and Jo fundraiser on March 31 from 10 am to 1pm. Vanessa Valencia and April Potter will provide the musical entertainment. Deva’s Live Music Matinee lineup features 3/2 Seth D Baker, 3/9 Ffej Moore, 3/23 Nathan Ignacio One Man Band, 3/30 Josh Davenport. Sunday Breakfast Music brings Tiffany Rose 3/3, Mattea 3/10, Allen, Ashman and Davis 3/17, and Melynda 3/24. Tony and the Tuff TImes at Barkin’ Dog if you like Chi-Town Blues. Poorhouse Millionaires up in Sonora for the Foothill folks or give a listen to Ava Grace at Rivvi’s for some piano-driven soul. Starting March 9th and every Saturday for the rest of the month you can catch Tony and the Tuff Times doing a residency at Ridgways. Stockton folks should go hear Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood at Jessup’s Dream Rides on the 10 for the 40th annual Poker Run. On the 16th you can start your morning off with Ava Grace at Deva and then catch a dinner set at Rivvi’s in Oakdale by the Poorhouse Duo. The Gallo Center is hosting a Blues Brothers Review on the 21st, this looks like a lot of fun. I may try to check that one out. I will be taking the Poorhouse Millionaires to The Cow Track on the 22nd to shake things up a bit. I will be inviting some special guests to join in, it should be fun. Ava Grace will be performing with a full band at the 50’s Roadhouse during the day on the 23rd and Poorhouse Millionaires are headed to Ralston’s Goat that night.

What’s new with Jazz and the Blues News? By Eric Benson I often hear from my older friends that there is “nothing happening” in the way of a club for our age group where you can see a show with some good food, drink and dance and home by ten. Well I am conspiring with some of our seasoned musicians in the Valley to do a Rhythm and Blues Sunday showcase at one of the local venues from 5 PM to 9PM with special guests each month featuring Blues, Motown, old school and Funk for listening and dancing. Latin Comic Expo and Grape City Con

By Middagh Goodwin I first heard that Ricardo Padilla and Javier Hernandez were bringing their Latin Comic Expo to Modesto back in November and have been excited ever since. Taking place at Modesto Junior College on March 15 and 16th doors open at 10 am you will not want to miss this great event. Co-Founded by Ricardo Padilla and Javier Hernandez in 2011, the Latino Comics Expo is the nation’s first convention dedicated exclusively to promoting and highlighting the contributions of Latino creators (both in the U.S and beyond it’s borders) in the fields of comic books, graphic novels, comic strips, political cartoons, zines, animation and related popular arts. With 8 previous shows ranging from San Francisco, Los Angeles and Brownsville, TX, and an expansion into an annual Latino Animation Festival, the LCX is the premier resource for fans to meet and support the Latino creators of today and tomorrow. The creator of Homies, David Gonzales will be attending along with several other guests. Artist Jaime Hernandez co-creator of the indie comic Love & Rockets whose characters are complex and feel real, right out of SoCal Punk and Lowrider culture. Author/Artist Cathy Camper writer of the Graphic Novel Lowriders in Space and Lowriders Blast from the Past. Professor and Author Fredrick Aldama He is the author, co-author, and editor of 36 books, including the award-winning Laatinx Superheroes in Mainstream Comics. Sonambulo creator Raffael Navarro, Happy Tree Friends co-creator Rhode Montijo, Cartoonist Jaime Crespo, and Zine creators Isabel Ann Castro and Natasha Hernandez are just a few of the creators that will be joining the Latin Comic Expo. In addition to their vibrant exhibit hall where attendees can meet one on one with the creators, the LCX is known for it’s wide variety of panels and workshops. Topics have included self-publishing, crowdfunding, Latina Power, individual author spotlights, historical presentations, scholarly studies, workshops for kids and more. The Expo is a place to celebrate creativity, to educate, inform and learn, and to be able to share the richness of our various Latino cultures Friday and Saturday, March 15th and 16th 10 am at Modesto Junior College 435 College Ave, Modesto CA.

Punxsutawney Phil, the official groundhog of Groundhog’s Day did not see his shadow which means we are supposed to have an early Spring. In the meantime, I’m cold. Inside: cold, Outside: cold. I wear socks under pantyhose. I’m pretty sure my leg hair is getting thicker for warmth. I fight with my guy over who gets to have the dog sleep closest to them. So, giant rodent, I hope you are right. St. Patrick’s Day is coming up. I hope y’all aren’t going out and buying hundreds of dollars worth of green beer and shamrock shakes. I really wish you an old fashioned St. Patrick’s Day like we had when I was a kid. We wore green. If you didn’t wear green you got pinched. If you pinched someone who was wearing green you got punched. The teacher would stick a piece of green paper on you with a safety pin if you forgot to wear green and carefully monitor that no one was punching too hard. Wow, sounds pretty violent when I write it down like this. Never mind, drink too much green beer and throw up in some bushes. I think it might be better. I know you probably don’t even believe me, but I’m so excited about the shows this month. I know I say it all the time, but I also mean it all the time. The 209 has some great performers and is also bringing in

performers from all over. These are really top rate shows. Here are a few highlights for the month. March 15th at the Reata don’t miss the incredible Chyrl “the Soccer Mom” Anderson this show will put you back $20 but is well worth it. Famiglia Bistro has been hosting some great comedy and March 28th will be no exception. Catch headliner Myles Weber with Phil Johnson and more all for just $10. Some of the guests announced already are VA Shannon Farnon best known as the voice of Wonder Woman on the Super Friends and Chris Anthony the original voice of Barbie. The Costume Contest will take place in Jackson Hall at 4 pm. A portion of the proceeds from the Grape City Con will benefit the Salvation Army Lodi and United Way of San Joaquin. Pro Wrestling Bushido will again hold an afternoon wrestling show just outside the main halls.

Open Water Training with Sharks By Efren Martinez

Springtime approaches and so do the

Triathlon competitions and the need to get back into the water. It’s important that before you go dipping your toe in an ocean or lake for that matter you remember to put safety first. My wife and I headed to our place in Los Cabo, for her vacation and for me to train in the open Ocean. I did my daily brick workout loops on the beach. I’d run 300 yards and then jump into the ocean and swim out 150 yards, then across 300 yards only to swim back in 150 yards followed by running back down the beach. These brick workouts consisted of 6 loops. Swimming in the open ocean or any body of water can be very dangerous. So before any open water swim, you should take about 15-20 minutes to study the ocean. Look for swells and at the temperament of the sea. Comb the beach for any rocks that you might step on during your runs along the shore. These open water brick workouts aren’t easy, but they are necessary to get reacquainted with your sea legs, so you don’t fall on your face

after a long swim, but also to acclimate yourself to the cold water along with waves that can toss you around like a chef making a salad. Honestly, I love it! There is something beyond words for me to be in the open ocean knowing that I am in a different unknown world. After about a week of these brick workouts, I’m generally ready to do my yearly swim across The Sea of Cortez. It’s about a very dangerous 2-mile swim. You should never do an open water swim alone. Sure I’m the only one in the water, but I always hire three guides to shadow me, 2 in kayaks and 1 in a motorized boat in case I need to get to the shore fast for a medical emergency. The guides also help with passing crafts and cruise liners to keep them from running me over. They really can’t help stop a sea creature attack. Life is abundant in the ocean, and in the last seven times I’ve done this swim I’ve had just about every creature come upon me, but this was the first time that a giant shark was within its reach of me. I didn’t even realize it was there because I can’t see over the waves, but the guides in the kayaks did. Honestly, I wasn’t scared and I felt no danger from it, so I just followed Dora’s advice and kept swimming. It may sound crazy but I’d like to believe that I have a unique understanding with all of my Lord’s creatures. I love all animals and as I tell my wife, when I’m out there in the ocean it’s always going to be OK because I have a deal with my Lord’s sea life. I won’t eat you, so you don’t eat me. March is Green in Many Ways

This month has a lot in store for Modesto. For the month of green lets Go Green! You can start by coming out to RecFest on March 16th. It will be filled with music, games, hikes, and many dedicated volunteers that are passionate about nature. It will be held at our beautiful Tuolumne River Regional Park from 10AM - 3PM. There is also something you could do more regularly which is a new trend called plogging which is a combination jogging and picking up litter. Plogging is a simple way to empower yourself, help your community, and still get a great workout in. Other ways you can stay green are avoiding single use plastics such as straws, using a refillable water bottle, bringing your own bags to the store, and avoiding ziploc bags by using tupperwares. Small changes such as these

can have a big impact on this big earth. There will also be a Stanislaus Green Team meeting on March 21st if you want to learn more or have any questions about the green initiative and the Modesto Marathon on March 31st. Even if you are not running, it is always fun to support local events. My favorite part about Modesto is how it can be so big yet such a close knit community. I always seem to run into people I know, no matter where I go. I really hope to see some of you at any of these fun events Modesto has to offer this month.

An insight can come seemingly out of nowhere, sometimes during some kind of restful or repetitive activity. It usually feels like a good thing, we may have a sense that because of the insight life could actually be easier. We have an insight as a consequence of having lost control, we stumble and hurt ourselves and realize we had not been present or mindful. Or we say something that doesn’t make sense and realize that we weren’t really listening. Or our to-do-list is way too long, we feel swamped, haven’t had time to eat or rest, cannot calm down and concentrate. I think we all run into this sort of thing. Often we just shrug our shoulders: That’s life! But at some point we hit a wall. We are tired of getting caught in the same way time after time. We start to search for questions and answers and suddenly there’s insight. A simple thought may come to us: Is what we are doing really necessary, does it help anyone or improve anything? We don’t like when things

don’t go the way they are supposed to, but it is often when things don’t go the right way that we may intuitively come upon a deeper truth. The famous Buddhist teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh said “ Insight is seeing what is there. It is the clarity that can liberate us from afflictions such as jealousy or anger, and allow true happiness to come…We’re like a fish who has been caught once before and knows there’s a hook inside the bait; if the fish makes use of that insight, he won’t bite, because he knows he’ll get caught by the hook. Often, we just bite onto our craving or grudge, and let the hook take us. We get caught and attached to these situations that aren’t worthy of our concern. If mindfulness and concentration are there, then insight will be there and we can make use of it to swim away, free…In the past we probably did suffer from one thing or another. It may even have felt like a kind of hell. If we remember that suffering, not letting ourselves get carried away by it, we can use it to reminding ourselves, “How lucky I am right now.
