Yes, March is our month. Our area, even with the lack of recent rain, looks nice and green and we all gather together as Irish on St Patrick’s Day so we wish you “Erin Go Bragh” and we welcome you as family and hope to tip a pint or two of Murphys with you. Friends and family are the main reasons we love to gather here in Modesto. Speaking of family, I am proud to be in a family of strong women and it is great to celebrate National Women’s History Month and turn most of this issue over to the women in our community. My wife Becky and I were laser focused on raising smart, friendly, kind and independent women in a fun and creative environment and we are proud of who they have become. They are the foundation of my life and feel so fortunate. Sadly we lost Becky’s amazing mom Vivian McNulty last month, and she was “the Queen”. She was smart, crafty, funny, beautiful, mischievous and was, as Becky is to our family, the foundation that kept everything going smooth and financially sound. I was so fortunate to have been so welcomed by Vivian into her family family nearly 38 years ago as so much of what I am today is because of this. She fought hard against the ravages of Alzheimer’s and we will miss you Queen Vivian and your spirit will be with our family always. As we celebrate Modesto’s 150th Anniversary this year, we are focusing on the 1920s, yes the Roaring 20s and the role of women. So much happened in that decade and it was really interesting. First, women won the right to vote and Prohibition started, but needless to say, a huge underground economy was built. This made it interesting. We are an agricultural town so you know there must have been some bathtub booze in the works. We are celebrating the accomplishments and the talent of women in this issue, our business owners, our performers, our advocates and organizers and

of course those that have dedicated their talents to their family and kids as well as our turbo professionals So much has been done and we love to celebrate. We also have to stand up, protect and understand the women in our lives and we need to learn to walk a mile in their shoes. Literally. There is no use for spousal abuse and domestic violence and we have put a team together to Walk A Mile in her shoes to raised funds for Haven Women’s Center. We all need to act to protect those when they are the most vulnerable. Check out our team info on page XX. We hope you enjoy our look back this year and our peek into the speakeasies of the past and today. There are so many interesting things to do this month, from Civil War recreations, Irish celebrations, great musical fundraisers, more crab feeds and great stage performances and live music throughout our community and all of this wrapped up makes Modesto USA a great place to live. The month wraps up with a Beatles tribute at the State Theatre and you know that can’t be bad. Great news for our Graffiti Classic fans! You can now donate online at our website. We would love to get your help to build this amazing Graffiti USA experience here in Modesto USA, the home of American Graffiti. You can donate right now at www.

Thank you for reading ModestoView and sharing our 100% positive information with your friends and colleagues. I hope to see you out and about and hope you say Hi! Chris Murphy Founder & Publisher, ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com.

On The Cover

As we celebrate Modesto’s 150, we are focusing on the 1920s, a.k.a the Roaring 20s. As women gained the right to vote, Prohibition became the law of the land and that lead to a lot of creativity during the 20s. We are featuring three of Modesto’s great women who are leaders in their fields. Thanks to Cheroot and Speakeasy owner Gina Rossi (center) for hosting this awesome group of flapper girls. Event, music champion and bartender extraordinaire Jennifer Allsup (Left) and the politically active Democratic organizer, Marjorie Sturdy (right) round out this group of people that are currently influencing the directions in Modesto. Votes for Women with some newly illicit cocktails in a throwback to Modesto’s Speakeasy years. Thanks MJ Magano for bringing this Roaring 20s retro bar to life

Love Modesto Is Coming

Walk A Mile Fundraising We have no use for spousal abuse or domestic violence. This is something that we all must stand up against and prevent sexual abuse of any kind. We must support those that protect our most vulnerable in our community. The Haven Women’s Center does work that is literally life saving in the most dangerous times. Women need a safe place to get away and feel safe and take the time to make a clean break. This is why Sierra Pacific and ModestoView are Walking a Mile in Her Shoes. Men from all walks of life will be wearing bright red pumps to show solidarity that we have no use for abuse. The ModestoView Team will be out walking to raise money for Haven. We hope that you will dig down deep and support our team. We will be walking Saturday morning, April 6. Please make a quick contribution so we can make a difference. Plus, I am sure you get a good laugh watching men struggle to do what women do all day long. Tell a friend too. This is one of the most amazing days of the year here in Modesto where thousands in our community all get together to lend a hand and show Modesto some love. Hopefully, this engages people to Love Modesto all year long and create projects that are sustainable. If it is just you on your own, or if you have a group, there is something you can do and a project that will fit what you like. Most of these projects are done by noon, so it is really possible. SPEAKEASY HIDE AWAY Chris Murphy and Middagh Goodwin and photos by MJ Mangano The Roaring 20s were wild right? But Prohibition was the law of the land, alcohol was destroyed and poured down the drain everywhere. Everyone got in line and became teetotalers right? Wrong. Where there is a will, there is a way, and the creativity of the Moonshiners in the south, the rum runners, and the bathtub gin makers created an underground supply chain, with alcohol finding it’s way to private parties and a whole new breed of business, the Speakeasy. Todays Speakeasies, cute and crafty hidden bars are a secret until the first Instagram post, but back then, it was word of mouth. Some places were even designed to hide the alcohol as this law of the land was supposed to last forever. Secret doors, basements, hidden hallways and tunnels were built all over to create this illicit network. Modesto’s speakeasy of the past was the Tower Club, located at Camilla St and Yosemite. The tall tower was designed so that you could keep a look out for the law enforcement that may be coming from downtown Modesto. At the sight of the police, hidden ropes, walls and doors would lock into place, hiding the drinking and the bar and people would escape through tunnels to an adjacent building. This building is still there, the hidden ropes and walls are still in place and today, it houses the Eagles Lodge, that regularly holds events and fundraisers. It also features one of the few remain-

ing spring loaded dance floors that inspire local dancers. Our designer, Pete Grimaldi plays with his Zydeco Band the Blues Box Bayou Band to big crowds loaded with dancers. Sadly the tunnels that connected the Tower Club to the then Fusco’s Castle have been buried and filled in when the historic restaurant was demolished to make way for a Dollar General. But we have some photos of the hidden mechanisms in the former Tower Club and the tunnels when they were being demolished.

Today, Modesto has a Speakeasy in downtown. Prohibition lasted for over a decade America, from January 17th. 1920 when the 18th Amendment took effect until December 5th 1933 when the 21st

Amendment was ratified repealing the 18th and doing away with Prohibition. Almost immediately, Ernest and Julio built their winery in Modesto, and the USA returned to cocktails. If you have a thirst, the Speakeasy on 12th St is a great place to hangout and disappear. Owned by our cover girl Gina Rossi, the original entrance was supposed to be only from the back, but a 12th St entrance became more practical. Once inside, the red light of the bar slowly brightens as your eyes adjust to the darkness and the red booths and the ambience takes you to a different place. You can order a perfect or dirty Martini, Tom Collins, Manhattan or French 75 or any one of your faves and even sit at a Martini shaped table. Wednesday evenings, you can enjoy 1st Wednesdays with Trax on Wax with Felipe Garcia spinning your favorites on real vinyl records, DJ Tease on Thursdays and Neil and Matt on Fridays and rotating DJs on the weekend. At Trax on Wax, you can even sign up to spin a set yourself and bring your own records while you and your friends sip delicious cocktails. For another throwback experience, you can enjoy Gina’s other bar downtown, Cheroot on 10th Street which is an elegant, leather, vintage vibe with a full bar and allows cigar smoking. Many cool throwback cocktails are on the menu there and they have comedy nights as well.

Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results Fri., March 13 and Sat., 14 - 7 PM Modesto High School The MHS production of Shakespeare turns the male-dominated cast on its ear by creating a world in which wealthy women must marry off their dependent sons and the ladies have a considerably more substantial amount of power than Shakespeare’s world gave them. It’s not a true gender-bend production, just a creative imagining of what the world would be like if the women controlled the money and had the power to determine more of their fate. ...Irish Home Cooking

Where Everyone is Family

As a Murphy, Irish Pubs have a special place

in my heart. It is amazing that all around the world, there are Irish Pubs, even when I was in Mongolia. You feel at home in an Irish Pub and we have a really special place here in Modesto. P. Wexford’s Pub has been serving up home style, family-friendly, authentic Irish eats and ambiance since 1999. We caught up with managers Stephenie and Brittni, both with the restaurant for over 10 years, to see what’s in store for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration and the year to come! P. Wexford’s is known for its legendary MAMA Award winning St. Patrick’s Day Party thrown every year. But the people and traditions are serious here – no matter what day of the week the holiday falls, P. Wexford’s is ready to host the celebration of the year. This year, St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Tuesday, but you better believe that the View Crew and the rest of Modesto will be there drinking Irish stout beers and listening to epic performances by Johnny and Kelly, Cloak & Swagger, DJ Tease and more. Rain or shine, weekend or weekday, P. Wexford’s will transform their parking lot and pub to bring the spirit and joy of Ireland to Modesto, CA for the day. But what about the rest of the year? They often get calls from concerned patrons: “Will you have corned beef and cabbage at the St. Patrick’s Day celebration?” Stephenie and Brittni are always happy to report that they have corned beef and cabbage all year long! Chef Tony Arnebeck delivers many “Don’t Miss” items that you’ll be sure to love when you stop by: 1) Fish & Chips 2) The Ultimate Cheeseburger (not for the faint of heart!) 3) Traditional Shepherd’s Pie and our favorite 4) Corned Beef and Cabbage. Worried about healthy eating and fitness this year? P. Wex totally gets it! Their menu boasts a “Get Fit” menu with light salads, lean burgers, and healthy tacos to fit your diverse health and diet plans. In short, P. Wexford has it all, from traditional Irish plates to modern health conscious meals, ensuring the whole family has a satisfied seat at the table (or bar). Speaking of the bar, Brittni recommends coming in to try a nice Jameson cocktail or a good ol’ fashioned

Though the food is central to the heart and success of P. Wex, the entertainment schedule and enthusiasm for local events is what sets P. Wexford’s apart from the rest. Their schedule is jam packed with live music, trivia, and magic. That’s right – MAGIC! Every Monday, P. Wex offers up tableside magic shows and performances to entertain the entire family. Plus, Tuesday night, Brittni hosts trivia night for anyone who wants to play! No teams required, you can play as long or as short as you like, plus every week has new questions and topics to keep you guessing and engaged. If you love a place with games, you’ll love the dart boards in the bar. Speaking from experience, these games of darts are intense and a great way to keep in shape after a full plate of fish and chips. Stretch before and after to avoid next morning sore muscles, just in case the game gets competitive! Neil Buettner and Johnny & Kelly are regular musical performers in the venue and the restaurant has won many Modesto Area Music Awards (MAMAs) for their support of local music in the community. Here at Modesto View, we love to support people and places that strive to support local artists and musicians and P. Wex has certainly walked the walk in its continued support of the local community.

P. Wexford’s has also a haven for sports fans, too! You won’t want to miss the fandom of the Premier League soccer matches shown here, some of the matches at 6 am. P. Wex is also the host of the American Outlaws, the unofficial supporters group of the men and women’s national soccer teams. You won’t want to miss soccer (or football, whichever you prefer…) season at this joint. Make sure you check their Facebook page @pwexfords for game and local event and music updates. Stephenie and Brittni have watched P. Wexford’s change over the years and love what the pub has come to represent in our community and both attribute their love of P. Wexford’s to the “merriment” and warm ambiance that is felt in the restaurant. Regulars have become family to the staff and they enjoy seeing faces old and new stop in the pub every day. Even when the ladies aren’t working, P. Wexford’s is where they love to go out! That really says something about the level of quality, consistency, and entertainment at P. Wexford’s. We are so grateful to have a fun, authentic Irish pub in Modesto and appreciate P. Wexford’s consistent, loyal support of our community. So head on over, try some delicious plates and drinks, play some games, listen to music, and enjoy the beauty of P. Wexford’s! Slainte!

W E I V R E T IN By Chris Murphy

The Modesto Chamber of Commerce has been a vital part of Modesto for over 100 years. As Modesto evolved in the early 1900s, it was all about our commerce, getting our goods and services to market and helping new businesses get started. Small and local business really is the key to a healthy economy. When we keep the dollars local, good things happen in our community and when we do business with people we know, it creates a great city. The Modesto Chamber of Commerce is there today, bringing local business together. This year, the Chamber took a bold step and named a community volunteer, fundraiser, non-profit event coordinator, and active school parent to the CEO position. Trish Christensen takes over the Modesto Chamber in a challenging time. Local businesses are being attacked by global online services at a time when now, more than ever we need to protect our local economy. I saw a great post on social media that read, “Shop Local - Amazon, won’t sponsor your kids’ soccer team”. Trish has been a Beyer Band Booster leader, ran her own event and marketing company, has been a dedicated volunteer for the Amgen Tour, North Modesto Kiwanis Club events, MoBand, Boys and Girls Clubs of Stanislaus County, Stanislaus Family Justice Center, and so much more. She has spent her professional time in Modesto networking and creating teamwork for the greater good. This is what the Chamber needs; someone to bring focus on why we need a strong local business economy and how we all need to work together to find the better strength. Remember the old saying, Modesto Means Business? It is truer today than ever. Every dollar that stays in town funds our fire stations, schools, and supports another family and a strong economy attracts more business. Trish and her husband Charlie are great locally minded role models. Let’s meet Trish. ModestoView: What do you believe is the role of the Modesto Chamber of Commerce? Trish Christiansen: The Chamber has many roles, but the overarching role is to be the bridge. The Chamber has the opportunity to make a difference in all arenas of our community. We are here to promote business, support business, advocate for business, and build relationships to and between businesses but, it is more than just that. The Chamber is very multi-faceted. There is an understanding here that it takes many parts to enrich and nourish a community, an economy, and positive growth and outcomes. Between the various

14

programs, committees, and purpose driven events, there is an intentional effort to support what we can in every local sector. MV: Why do local businesses need the Chamber? TC: We intend to be their go to resource! We may have a person who just launched a business and needs support and guidance. We may have a member expanding and struggling with the permit process, finances, or licenses. President’s tier members may have a desire to meet, mingle, and network with other president’s tier members. We have members that want to get LEED and Green Business certified. We have non-profits that need to find other similar service, or complimenting service non-profits to connect with to enhance their mission. We are in our own growth and development mode right now, but the things we are building are with all of them in mind. I anticipate SCORE, a resource partner of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), to be coming back online in the next couple months. We are about to launch a Women in Business Mentorship Network, ReaCon Team outreach, and to collaborate on an array of other great projects and programs. MV: You have long been a volunteer, fund raiser, band parent and have developed great relationships, how has that helped you in your role at the Chamber of Commerce? TC: The crux of everything is found within our relationships. I love to be the person that is hearing a story and just happens to know who they should connect with to fulfill a need. Creating a network is essentially

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

creating a web… bridges, ties, threads from one person to another. The same is true for business, community, partnerships, resources, a thriving economy… people are the center of each, it all comes down to the strength of our relationships, a multitude of relationships in various sectors, and our willingness to invest and to support one another, regardless of which path one is on. Through the years of my highly mixed bag of experiences, I have met a lot of people and generated meaningful relationships with a great many of them. MV: How would you describe the current business environment in Modesto? TC: I feel this is an exciting time to be in business here. There is an enormous amount of innovation and creativity at play. There is passion and focus on creation and reinvention. The downtown hub is at the beginning of evolution, yet there is effort to preserve the past in the look, feel, and design of the streets and store fronts – a conscientious effort to pay homage to where we came from and how our great city was founded. The timing is thrilling with 2020 being the 150th Anniversary of Modesto. Companies like Entekra brought their vision for building to Modesto, not just from another city or state, but from another country! They chose our community to expand to and happily hire our residents to work for them. From ag, manufacturing and building, education to profession, tech and trade training, the rapidly growing restaurant options, and our unique and well-rounded mix of art, Graffiti, wine and beer making, and music bringing our residents out to have fun and tourists intrigued to experience a piece of our way of life. All these elements lead to an engaging environment and equate to building blocks of a thriving local economy. MV: What is the most pressing thing to be done or changed at the Chamber? TC: The answer in my opinion is both simple and complex. The simple answer - It is time for the Chamber to start a totally new chapter with new colors, characters, and purpose. The complex answer has more elements. The Chamber originated as the Modesto Businessmen’s Association in 1912. Talk about a totally different era! The Chamber has gone through many era’s, decades, “looks and feels” in the last 108 years. In real time, when the tides turn, there is a point that the flow gets stagnate. It hits a slack tide period. The Chamber has become stagnate and we are now primed to change direction. The Chamber needs to surge into a new era and fresh start. MV: What advice would you give a new start up business in Modesto? TC: - Do your research! You also need to be patient and kind to yourself. You need to know where to go for answers, or who

can help you get the answers. You need to trust your instincts and ask a lot of questions. Some starts ups are based on a great concept without many resources. They need support and they don’t have to walk that path alone. Some of those scenarios are a great fit for an incubator program. A place with built in resources to support the development and evolution of a startup. Maybe all you need is the Chamber to connect you to the right source, point you in the right direction for answers, or to put you in touch with a mentor. Watch for some great collaboration efforts to support new business developing soon. MV: Do you think Modesto is a Classic American City TC: Yes, for sure! Within our community we have houses built in the 1800’s, we showcase cars from the early 1900’s, our Fourth of July parade has taken place annually since 1874, we are the home of one of the world’s largest wineries, we are home to the world’s largest almond grower, and we love the arts! Theatre, music of the ages with a mix of genres, art, mural painting… movie makers, Olympic athletes, actors, singers – world renowned on all counts. So well rounded with the vibe of a small town. And we strive to keep as many events as possible, family friendly. Can’t be too much more All American then that! MV: Describe your perfect Modesto day TC: My favorite day can be set in either spring or fall – I love the colors of both, but with the greater mix colors in spring, it would win out if I had to choose. I enjoy Saturday morning strolls through Famer’s Market and spending time at the various vendors to sample their products and tidbits. This is when we choose the vegetables, we will prepare with Sunday dinner. Those that know me know I love to be outside. I enjoy walking my neighborhood with our dog and taking in the various landscapes of my neighbors. I would spend the afternoon gardening, weeding, or shopping for flowers and vegetables to plant. The day would be perfectly wrapped up by dinner at one of many of our favorite restaurants, a walk to a show at one of our cherished theaters, and then end the night with a leisurely conversation over wine with my family and/or friends at a downtown gathering spot. MV: Beatles or Stones? TC: Beatles…. They are the first rock and roll band I remember hearing an entire album of. I danced in my bedroom for hours to the songs on that album. The Future is Female

While the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad vastly increased the pace of urbanization, agricultural development and industrialization which integrated California, the women who lived in and around 1870 in the newly established albeit, unruly village of Modesto did not enjoy progress the same way as their male counterparts. Employment roles of servitude in saloons and in brothels were the eventual offerings in this wild west settlement for many women. On September 6, eleven hundred miles away in Laramie, Wyoming, Louisa Ann Swain became the first woman in the United States to vote in a general election. A fete hard fought against, was the belief that cooking, cleaning and raising children is the sole submissive duty of every woman. Anti-slavery stances bore the fruit of the push back which led women to assume leadership in reform and help redefine the role of women in the 19th century United States. The Seneca Falls Convention (the first Women’s Rights Convention) in

1848 was where the first proposal of the idea to allow women to vote was devised. Delegates led by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, wrote a “Declaration of Sentiments” outlining grievances and goals. Many were criminalized for being “militants”, their sashes and protest banners torn to pieces, some beaten at the hands of their husbands and the police. Women were imprisoned in workhouses, in squalid conditions, fed unsuitable food which led to hunger strikes and force feedings and in one instance, thirty three Suffragettes were tortured by guards-they paid long and with everything. Ultimately on May 21, 1919 The House Of Representatives passed the 19th Constitutional Amendment and the Senate followed two weeks later. In 1920 three fourths of the states were in agreement and the United States adopted this new policy. Follow the View Crew on Twitter, starting with @modestoview

To mobilize to bring women into full participation in the main stream of American Society is an arduous journey fraught with barriers. Gender stereotypes, inadequacy in numbers of female leadership and workplace culture are just some of these circumstances. When Betty Friedan authored The Feminine Mystique, a call to action was echoed one hundred eighteen years later over comparable concerns; cooking, cleaning and raising children is not enough to suffice the deeper desire to achieve an education. This helped set fire to another movement. The National Organization Of Women was founded in 1966 with “the purpose to take action through intersectional grassroots activism to lead societal change and eliminate discrimination.” Today NOW steers its focus on an expansive range of women’s Subscribe to our You Tube channel at: youtube.com/modestoview

When asked about her personal dealings with gender discrimination, Jamieson replied, “I’m an “owner” now and not as susceptible to the whims of others. I view it as my responsibility to help in any way I can, those who work for me to be on a path towards a similar situation.” International Women’s Day, March 8 is observed across the world and encourages us to take action for equality and celebrate women’s achievements. Modesto USA is celebrating 150 years as a city this. There are events and celebrations all year long and ModestoView is

taking a walk through history in each issue. We are bringing our founding times back and we have a wonderful team of history exports presenting our history to here in ModestoView each month. This month we are roaring into the 1920s. There was so much happening in Modesto during this time; woman gained the right to vote, prohibition was just beginning, leading to many Speakeasies and other illicit places to drink, as shown by the ladies Gina Rossi, Jennifer Allsup and Marjorie Sturdy on our March cover. The arts and culture of our town were growing fast as our agricultural commerce grew. 10th, 11th, I and J streets were the place to be, our railroad was running passengers in and out of the downtown train station and the were the formative days of Water, Wealth, Contentment and Health. Our friend Carl Baggese takes us on a Roaring 20s tour. Thank you Carl. – Publisher, Chris Murphy

MODESTO’s ROARING 20’s By Carl Baggese

Taking Advantage of Economic Growth

The era that followed a tragic war and

the pandemic of the Spanish Flu was marked by an unbridled sense of freedom in the United States. The 1920s began by shedding the turmoil that had marked the preceding decade, welcoming a time of enthusiastic growth. Modesto and the Stanislaus County region felt the dynamic economic boom as much as in any other part of the country. The only damper on the overall enthusiastic time was the passage of the Volstead Act and its subsequent enforcement, which took effect in January of 1920 ushering in the era of Prohibition. At the beginning of the decade, the Modesto Chamber of Commerce felt that it was time to update a booklet extolling the virtues of living in Modesto but originally published in 1911. The Chamber’s new booklet stated that Modesto was the “fastest growing city on the Pacific Coast.” The community was listed as “the county seat of Stanislaus County; a modern city of the new type in the heart of the greatest irrigation district in the West; an agricultural city; and strictly a Home City.” The aim of the booklet is stated boldly on the inside cover page: “Come to Modesto Where Opportunity Awaits You.” It isn’t surprising that the city’s population began to surge. The economy of the nation was bustling after the war and growth potential in California was huge. Farmland and cityscapes beckoned to the rest of the nation and many heeded the call. Among the new developments as Modesto

The Hotel Modesto, built in 1914, would add a fifth floor and expand its structure to take up a large portion of its corner on 11th and H Sts. Next door on 11th Street, The Modesto News Herald was purchased by McClatchy Newspapers in 1924, eventually to be renamed The Modesto Bee and News Herald. Further up 11th at J Street next to the Hughson Hotel, George and Grace Covell built their new 70-room hotel in 1924. George was a rancher, but his wife saw to it that the ornate hotel lobby boasted marble floors and the rooms were decorated in English wallpaper, mahogany furnishings and dark red carpeting. Business was good enough for the hotel to expand in 1929 adding a new wing on 11th Street with 60 additional rooms. The hotel also featured a movie theater

With the Hughson and Covell hotels taking up J Street between 10th and 11th Streets, construction began in 1925 on a four-story office building across the street. It would feature 90 offices and 12 ground floor stores. The office floors were made of flint tile from Luxembourg, Germany. The building was built by the manager of the Hotel Hughson whose last name was Beatty – hence The Beatty Building. Other office buildings were being added to downtown during this prosperous period including the Black Building at 11th and I Sts. Both the Beatty Building and the Black Building are still in use almost 100 years later. In addition to new buildings in the downtown, at least one was repurposed. Tragic Flight, c. 1921. The idea was to establish an air route from Oakland to Yosemite Valley. The flight to Yosemite took only two hours and was a tremendous success, with regular trips “probably beginning in the spring,” according to the Oakland Tribune. Something happened near Maze Wren Park when the plane lost its wing and fell 600 feet through electrical wires, bursting into flame, killing all four men. Black Building, c. 1924. Modesto Junior College, c. 1920 now the Gallo Center, closed in the mid-1920s and the building was sold in 1926 to A.P. Giannini who opened a branch of the Bank of Italy on the corner. In 1928 a new building was constructed for what would eventually become Bank of America. To top off an era of construction throughout the region during the 1920s, one could consider the massive project of building a concrete dam to create a reservoir of water for agricultural use and an improved power plant for the generation of electricity. Modesto and Turlock Irrigation districts spent $6,000,000 to provide storage of 960,000 acre-feet of additional water and generate enough electrical energy to meet the needs of both districts. The new Don Pedro Dam was built on the Tuolumne River, above the LaGrange Dam. Finished in 1923, the dam was as tall as an 18-story building. In October of 1923 the first MID electric meter went into service. Modesto Junior College, c. 1920s. MJC was created under a new law that allowed junior colleges to be established FOLLOW US:

separately from high school districts. It was the first such junior college in the state. Classes began in 1921 at Modesto High School as a 40-acre campus was developed on College Avenue, above 10th Street. North and South Halls, the main classroom buildings, were completed in the mid-1920s. The photo of the two buildings was taken from College Avenue. In the other photo, one of the buildings seems to be mired in the middle of muddy roadways. This is probably South Hall, since it was the first completed in 1923. First president of MJC was Charles S. “Jim” Morris. When an administration building was built in the 1970s on the site of the Greek Theatre, it was called the Morris Administration Building. With potential for even more growth, Modesto had positioned itself as one of the Central Valley’s most dynamic cities. There were few roadblocks in the way for more development and a growing population as the city entered its second 50 years. No one could foresee any thing as cataclysmic as what the 1930s had in store – at least not from the vantage point of the roaring 20s. It is the first such institution in the state. The first junior college student to transfer moves from MJC to Stanford in 1922. - The Modesto Chamber of Commerce revises a booklet extolling the virtues of living in Modesto. The booklet, originally published in 1911, now features new photos emphasizing the mixture of bucolic farmland and city sophistication and distributes it throughout the country. - Modesto’s flying ace, Harold “Bud” Coffee, and three others, including Giocondo Jacuzzi, die in a fiery airplane crash near Maze Wren Park on July 14. - The resplendent Strand Theatre opens on 10th Street with The Mark of Zorro. The Hotel Covell is in the same block as the Hotel Hughson. The new hotel also contains a movie theatre known variously as the Richards, National, Princess, and Covell. 1925 - Construction starts on the Beaty Building. Tenants begin occupying in March 1926. The building is one of the only remaining 1920s structures in Modesto. 1929 - A new section is added to the Hotel Covell, bringing the number of rooms to 128. In October the stock market crashes, losing the equivalent of $396 billion dollars in today’s money. The market lost more than the entire cost of World War I and ushered in the Great Depression.

SONG WRITING VIEW

Sunday, March 8 is a day of civil awareness. International Women’s Day. This day is a focal point in the movement of women’s rights, a global day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Some countries commemorate International Women’s Day as a public holiday. 2020 is a pivotal year for advancing gender equality. This year, 45 years since an acknowledgment by the United Nations, we find ourselves in the midst of the 100th Anniversary of the Suffragette Movement during a key election year and Modesto celebrates its Sesquicentennial. I view this crucial time as a Trifecta opportunity, a galvanizing moment to mobilize local action to achieve gender equality in the movement, activate the next generations of women and men and give leaders and gender equality activists, advocates and visionaries the chance to raise awareness against bias, eliminate discrimination and make good on real change. As a global community, we must take stock of our progress and responsibility for our oversight. An equal world is an enabled world. My fundamental truth is living in the world of music where recognition is not possible without opportunity. I can demonstrate by my “hustle” as evidence of how much additional promotion and effort is required of me versus male music acts. Until systematic change really begins and my male peers stipulate that they only play in venues and at events with balanced talent will this change. When

Get Your Voice HEaRd-I Am Generation Equality By Patty Castillo Davis Country radio adopts policies full of that include “not playing two female artists back to back”, and the professional music industry’s inclusion record is an anemic 21.7% Female Artists, 14.4% Female Songwriters and 2.6% Female Producers, how can we expect our local community to give regard to gender disparity? I do. I expect it. I expect it because I’ve been met with welcome by a proportionate number of individuals who recognize my talent, efforts, and account of my achievementsmen and women who share the urgency of addressing these issues around representation. Excellence in creativity and technical prowess are not gendered attributes but there is evidence that opportunities and ambitions are smothered. Real change has been agonizingly slow for the majority of women and girls in the world. But as for me, I am hopeful, continually renewed and committed to being a model of accountability and reform. I invite you to show your support for this female-driven entertainment**SHE-BOSS ALERT!!** Tiffany Rose and the Outlaw Hearts are pleased to announce the completion of their “first collection of original songs that have grown, like us, over the years and are finally ready to be shared”. As you should know by now, my love for the ViewCrew runs deep and wide but, it is time for me to move on from my monthly column. I will still be working with the View from time to time. Who knows, I may be back as a writer someday. The important thing I want you to know is that I’m leaving for the best possible reason, I’m too busy working on my music to spend time writing about it. Chris Cain and MAMA Blues By Eric Benson

Sometimes things have an organic feel to them, they flourish and fall apart and they come back once again. One of my favorite Bands the Chris Cain Band we used to have come through every three months to the formerly Clayton’s Café over the years. Clayton’s closed and we lost Mitch Mazetti one of the coolest club and restaurant owners in the valley but we are back. The location now is Café Urbano with new owner Noel Sanchez and now we are going back to bringing Chris Cain back on Sunday, March 15th. Robin Ford one of my favs’ on guitar said if there is one guy today singing, playing and writing in the Blues idiom to listen to, it is Chris Cain. And also on the Blues front, we lost Ron Thompson this month, of Ron Thompson & the Resisters. I used to follow Ron all over the bay area

playing, some of the most intense, blistering music I have ever heard. Ron had great chops, and could sing like a bird but his performance was riveting, intense. More on his life next month when Don Heflin a long time friend will write a eulogy. Blue Monday Party invitational jam now has gone to every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month with the Blue Monday Band with special guests. The house Band features Johnny Valdes Guitar, Dave Hawks Drums, Conrad Johnson & John Adey Bass, horn section Jamie Dubberly Bone, Kevin Marin Trumpet, John Burt Sax, Dave Dow & Eric Benson Keys, and Pat Governor Hammond Organ. Some bright moments on the horizon, new bands sounding great are The Good Ones, Latin Flavor Band with RJ HASS/Santana tribute, and the Conrad Johnson Unit/R & B and Funk. The Blue Monday Party returns to Café Urbano this month features; Sunday, March 1st Texas Funk with Roberto Gloria, every Thursday Havana Nights/Latin dancing,

Friday 13th MAMA SHOWCASE with Gary Gervase & Kick Start, Sunday, March 15th Chris Cain Band, 22nd Latin Flavor Band with RJ HASS, Sunday, March 29th Jazz Guitarist blowout with Bruce Forman Solo show with Barry Finnerty Guitar with Rhythm section to follow. And around the town some beautiful one nighters to catch. The State Theatre features Leo Kottke, guitar virtuoso March 1st, March 14th Mistlin Gallery with Synergy Chamber Players, and March 7th Modesto Unplugged features True Life Crew, the vocal harmony of Europe and America. And John Griswold of Red Tie Arts is coming back with Calendar for March, A Night at the Museum with vocalist Valerie Weinberg the music of Sinatra, Ella and the Jazz Standards, and April 11th the Spirit of Lennon Tribute. Check out WWW. Redtiearts.org to the lowdown on the how down. The space is a wonderful nightclub experience intimate with table seating with

beverage and deserts available. Hope to see you there! The new season for the Gallo has a diverse offering. In March featuring: 1st Golden Bough, 7th Abba Mania, 11th Chicago/ the musical, 14th Everclear, 17th Chris Angel RAW, 19th John Tuner, 21st Bonnie Rait, 22nd Gladys Knight, 28th Straight No Chaser, and 30th & 31st Bandstand, Wow what a lineup! And my cohost for Blue Monday Dave Dow has his Thursday night jam at the Ralston’s Goat on 10th street. Dave’s Jam goes from 7 to 10 PM for people to sit in a play with the house band. And the Newman Theatre a beautiful historic theater in Newman for March has 14th Caravanserai/Santana Tribute, 21st Night Moves/ Creedence & Bob Segar Tribute, 28th North County Blue/best in Blue Grass Band. All the best, peace out! Eric Benson, cell 209918-7033, email; Mbenson@fire2wire.com

You’ve been hitting the gym daily and

Body Shock Fitness By Efren Martinez

your workouts have become easy. In fact, you feel that your workouts aren’t nearly as hard as they use to be. So why aren’t the results that were seen early on no longer happening? If this sounds familiar it might be because you’ve hit a plateau with your workouts. This very same thing has happened to me. My body seems to get into the same fitness and metabolic burn that it just repeats itself. In order to break your hypnotic rhythm, you must go into a “Body Shock Fitness” workout. But it doesn’t stop there, you must also shock your body with a different kind of nutrition. Although everyone’s nutrition can be different, mine is pretty much the same each day. I eat and drink as clean as possible. My calorie intake is also about the same daily and my workouts are consistent even though I change them every other day. Here’s how I shocked my body for fitness. Back in January my wife and I headed to Cabo for a well-deserved vacation. She gets the vacation and I worked on my booty off. While we were there we got on the all-inclusive meal and drink plan. My daily nutrition went totally into shock. The food was great, but not what my body was accustomed to. Pancakes, fried eggs, fried everything and just about every kind of rich-tasting salty buttery food you can

imagine. Mind you I did watch what I ate. In fact, I sat there and watched it all go down comfortably and happily. Some nights I actually paid for it. The salt content was over the top and the term “Happy Hour” for me basically meant some Alka-Seltzer before bed. That’s the nutrition body shock part. Now came my body shock workouts. Every morning I’d get up at 6 am and head to the gym for 2 hours and run 2-3 miles on the treadmill followed by some weight lifting. Soon after I’d join my wife for a very high-calorie rich breakfast and chill on the beach till the afternoon. That’s when I’d spend as much as 1.5 hours running and doing some open water swimming. I’d start with swimming out 200 yards to the first buoy, swim across 550 yards to the end buoy, and swim back in 200 yards to the shore only to spring out of the water and run the 550 yards across to where I started from. Then I’d jump back in the ocean and do it all over again for 6 loops. This was Body Shock Fitness at it’s best. My body was experiencing an entirely different workout than it was accustomed to. It worked! By the time I was ready to come home I was totally craving my steelcut oatmeal and my raw vegetables. Later it did take me about 2 days to deflate, my body was so bloated with water retention from the salt-rich food that I ate. So after I got back to my regular workouts I could not only see the results instantly but I felt them. My muscles popped out with definition, my six-pack was even more defined, I felt stronger and healthier. Mind you for this body shock to really work you need to have as clean of a diet as you can and be consistent with your fitness. As most of you know, I don’t drink and I don’t eat fast food nor pre-packaged. So just as I said this was body shock at it’s best. Cheers to your Health!

By Monica Barber sion: $7 Seniors/Military: $5 http://www. dutchhollowfarms.com/One of the best about Modesto around springtime is the opening of the Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market. March 19th marks the return of this celebrated event. It is one of the great places to find a great selection of fresh organic foods, fruits, vegetables, local eggs, honey, baked goods, and plants along with music, activities and more. The Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market is located on 16th Street between H & I Streets, Thursdays & Saturdays from 8am-1pm. Info: https://modestocfm.com/ For the first time many tattoo enthusiasts will make their way to Modesto for the 1st Annual Tattoo Expo, March 21st 22nd. What happens at a tattoo convention is that guys and dolls will walk past booths, showing off their existing work, perhaps looking for their first piece, thumb through artists books and pages of flash before making a deal with just the right artist. The event will have artists taking appointments, daily competitions, music, food and more. All ages are welcome. Tickets: GA $20one day $30-2 day. Kids 12 & under are free. http://modesto.tat-expo.com/

Self - Care

By Mary Layton Here is a nice inspiration a friend shared with me the other day: “ Be kinder to yourself and your kindness will flood the world.” It took me a long time to learn that being kinder to myself isn’t selfish but actually helps my family and everyone I come in contact with. If I neglect my own well-being, for example ignore when I am hungry, thirsty, lonely, tired or upset it not only puts a lot o stress on me but also effects others. The absence of

kindness is contagious. We can do so much to flood our world with goodness if we care to. What keeps me from being kind to myself? I think it is my ambition and restlessness. When I try to do too much in one day the pressure of rushing makes me feel irritable and short with people. I don’t even enjoy myself in those moments. It’s time then for me to take a break, go for a walk or rest. May be I spend time in my garden and stop to smell the roses, as they say. Puttering around, digging my hand in the soil and watering my plants makes me feel cared for myself and nourishes me deeply. Life is going by so fast! Does it really have to be full of stress all the time? I believe there’s got to be some time, here and there, for everyone to enjoy and pamper themselves a little. Spring is here again. We can admire the flowering of the orchards, take in the sweet smells in the air, go for walks and slow down to be in the moment. It’s really important I believe for our health, emotional stability and growth to be aware of the speed and make room for some pauses. We may need time to examine some of our behaviors and correct them if necessary. Sitting down to listen to music, curling up with a book, spending time with our pets, getting a massage or a facial, exercise and meditation nourish the soul. Caring for myself first is part of caring for others. For more info go to taichi4modesto.com or call (209)572-4518

Happy Birthday Modesto! Happy March Modesto! This month I wanted to talk about some of the organizations that you don’t have to necessarily be in, to be apart of. The first being Girl Scouts. I was inspired to write about this because the Girl Scout logo, which is green, reminds me of March and it’s also cookie season of course! This is a major fundraiser and teaches the girl’s important life skills such as goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. So next time you see a couple of cute girls in sashes and vests in front of your local grocery store, don’t be afraid to stop by; you can even buy a box for a veteran if you’re not a cookie person yourself. I, myself, have been in girl scouts for 12 years and there is nothing more exciting than cookie season. I can’t think of a better way to support our community. Another experience this month that is al-

ways a good time is the Modesto Marathon or MOMA. This will take place Sunday, March 29th. Although I have not run the event myself, it is always fun to stand at the finish line and cheer on my friends who do. There are plenty of vendors and stands located next to the finish line in downtown Modesto. It is so impressive to see everyone who runs it, definitely all ages. You may even find interest in it and want to join in next year. There is a teen program for training called Teens Run Modesto (TRM) that trains on Saturday mornings at Dry Creek trail leading up to the big day. I would highly suggest looking into this. I hope this helped inspired you this month and as always, I’m excited to see you out in the community showing your support and love for this amazing town we live in. It is also important to remember to go green and keep Modesto clean so we can continue to put on these amazing events we offer.
